About this work
Hot air balloons at the 49th Montgolfiade in Münster (1st race), North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Montgolfiade Münster is the oldest hot air balloon event in Germany. It dates back to the launch of the first hot air balloon in Telgte on November 7, 1969. The portmanteau word “Montgolfiade”, which is now used for almost every balloon event, was invented for this occasion. It is composed of the words Montgolfière and Olympiade. The event was subsequently held at various locations, including regularly at Münster-Osnabrück Airport. Since 2003, the Montgolfiade has been held annually in August by the “Freiballonsport-Verein Münster and Münsterland e. V.” in cooperation with the Sports Office of the City of Münster near the Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum on the meadows by Lake Aasee. Since 2014, the event has only been held every other year in Münster, with the event taking place in a different city or municipality in the Münsterland region in the intervening years.
