About this work

Chain of the jetty at the Halterner Stausee (at evening), Haltern am See, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Haltern Reservoir is located near Haltern am See in the northern Ruhr area. It was created between 1927 and 1930 by damming the Stever River. From the outset, its main purpose was to supply drinking water to the Ruhr area. Today, the lake continues to play an important role in water extraction and is operated by the regional utility company. In addition to its technical function, the reservoir quickly became a popular local recreation area. Sailing, surfing, and cycling around the lake are among the leisure activities on offer. However, certain areas are closed or have restricted access for reasons of drinking water protection. With its approximately 300 hectares of water and adjacent forests, the Haltern Reservoir combines infrastructure, nature, and leisure. It is at once a supply facility, a landscape, and a defining element of the identity of the town of Haltern am See.
