About this work
Sculpture “Der gescheiterte Varus” by Wilfried Koch (2003) (and in the background: Siebenteufelsturm), Haltern am See, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The bronze sculpture “The Failed Varus” in Haltern am See is an impressive work of art commemorating the Roman general Publius Quinctilius Varus and his defeat in the Battle of Varus in 9 AD. The larger-than-life sculpture stands in Kardinal-von-Galen-Park, not far from the medieval Siebenteufelsturm tower, and was erected in 2003. It was created by the renowned sculptor Dr. Wilfried Koch on behalf of the Masthoff Cultural Foundation. The bronze figure, which is 2.30 meters high and weighs around 650 kilograms, shows Varus at the dramatic moment when he realizes his catastrophic defeat – betrayed by the Germanic prince Arminius and overwhelmed by his troops. The sculpture expresses inner turmoil, disappointment, and humility rather than heroic triumph. On permanent loan from the Cultural Foundation, “The Failed Varus” stands for the preservation of historical memory and adds an emotional accent to the public space of Haltern am See.
