About this work
Interior (bottles) of the old distillery Löhning, Dülmen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Löhning distillery was a traditional grain distillery in Dülmen and is a prime example of the long distilling tradition in the Münsterland region. Its origins date back to the 19th century, when many farms began processing surplus grain into grain brandy. The Löhning family also took advantage of this opportunity and developed an independent distillery from a secondary agricultural business. The main product was grain brandy – typical for Westphalia – made from regional rye or wheat. Over the decades, the company modernized its technology, but remained artisanal in character. Like many smaller distilleries, Löhning had to compete with large industrial producers in the 20th century. Thanks to its regional roots, consistent quality, and traditional recipes, the distillery was able to maintain its position in the local market. The Löhning distillery in Dülmen was closed in 1989. The building was then renovated in accordance with historic preservation guidelines and converted into a KfW efficiency house, among other things.
