About this work

$2 Silver Certificate, Series of 1896 (Fr. Ref#247). The obverse depicts the allegory “Science presenting steam and electricity to Commerce and Manufacture;” engraved by G.F.C. Smillie. The reverse depicts Robert Fulton and Samuel Morse; engraved by Lorenzo J. Hatch.

Engraved signatures of Tillman (Register of the Treasury) and Morgan (Treasurer of the United States). The Series of 1896 United States Silver Certificates (issued in $1, $2, and $5 denominations) marked a significant departure from any previous design of U.S. paper currency. All three denominations depict neoclassical allegorical vignettes. The 1896 Silver certificates are often referred to as the Educational Series because of the name given to the $1 denomination (History Instructing Youth).
