About this work
Elevated view of Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, looking east and northeast from Morro Dois Irmãos. In the foreground and middle distance: Leblon, below, continuing toward Ipanema, with the apartment buildings and rooftops characteristic of the South Zone. On the left: Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, with the buildings of the Lagoa and Fonte da Saudade neighbourhoods on the opposite shore and, behind them, the green, forested slopes of the massif. In the centre background: Morro do Cantagalo, the granite outcrop separating Ipanema from Copacabana. On its right-hand slope, the houses of the Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho favelas can be seen along the ridge. Copacabana is hidden behind this hill. On the right: Praia de Ipanema, the line of breaking waves and, in the background, Ponta do Arpoador closing off the beach, with its green rock beside the sea. In the far distance: the silhouettes of the hills near the entrance to Guanabara Bay, including Pão de Açúcar among the grey profiles on the left, and farther to the right, across the sea, the hills of Niterói’s oceanfront region with several small coastal islands.
