About this work
A French satirical cartoon from the period of the French Revolution, dated around 1797-1799 (during the Directory). It is originally titled, or is known in the archives of the National Library of France (BnF), as part of the political satires of the time, and directly alludes to corruption, the luxuries of the new officials, and infidelity (a very common theme in the satire of the period, often depicted through the use of horns).
The Cart of the Cuckolds: The horse-drawn carriage (in this case, pulled by stags with enormous antlers) is filled with figures wearing horns on their heads. In European culture, horns are the ultimate symbol of the cuckold (the man cheated on by his wife).
