About this work

Attributed to Bishandas. A creative image of Jahangir Welcoming Shah 'Abbas, ca. 1618, Freer Gallery of Art, Washington DC - for more information see Keating, Jessica. "Metamorphosis at the Mughal Court." Art History 38.4 (2015): 732-747. The object in the left hand of the attendant on the right is a seventeenth-century German clockwork automaton of the Roman goddess Diana riding a stag. That paper identifies the artist as Abul’ Hasan (1589–c. 1630).

"IMAGE 4.2 Portrait of Shah Abbas I. Bishn Das, one Jahangir’s finest court artists, accompanied a Mughal embassy to the court of Shah Abbas I. Upon returning home, Jahangir awarded him an elephant by appreciation for the naturalistic portraits of Abbas that no doubt aided Jahangir in taking the measure of his rival."
