About this work
Twin mills (front: green mill, 1856; rear: red mill or Schoof’s mill, 1706), Greetsiel, Krummhörn, Lower Saxony, Germany The fishing village of Greetsiel is located in Krummhörn on the North Sea coast of East Frisia. It was founded in the Middle Ages as a small port and was shaped by crab fishing and trade for centuries. The historic town center with its 17th-century gabled houses and the harbour with its fleet of crab boats still give Greetsiel its maritime character today. The Greetsiel twin mills at the entrance to the village are particularly well known. The two Dutch windmills date from the 19th century (1856 and 1921). They originally served as grain mills and were important components of regional agriculture. One of the mills burned down partially in 2019, but has been restored and rebuilt. Today, the windmills are landmarks of the village. They can be visited and provide insights into traditional milling technology. Together with the historic harbour, they characterize the typical image of Greetsiel and symbolize East Frisian coastal culture.
