About this work

Scottish heather in the Westrup Heath in the early morning during the heather blossom season, Haltern am See, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany The Westrup Heath (sometimes referred to locally as the “Flaesheim Heath”) is a nature reserve in Haltern am See between the Haltern reservoir and the Westrup hamlet, from which it takes its name. The area is bordered by Federal Highway 58 to the north and State Highway 652 to the east. Along the roads, there are narrow strips of forest that serve as protective buffers. To the southwest is a sand extraction area. The remaining area of the sand heaths that once dominated the Haltern region lies on a post-glacial dune landscape. In order to preserve the once extensive heathland for future generations and to ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed, part of it was placed under nature conservation in 1936.
