About this work

Detail of the gable of the House of the Blackheads in Riga, showing from left to right the coats of arms of the Hanseatic cities Riga, Bremen, Lübeck, and Hamburg. Below them are four statues: Neptune, god of the sea, symbolizing maritime power and navigation; the allegories of Concordia (harmony) and Pax (peace); and Mercury, representing commerce and the exchange of information. The original building was erected in 1334, destroyed during World War II, and reconstructed between 1995 and 1999.
