About this work

Photograph of Machado de Assis by Marc Ferrez. this article describes him as a "light-skinned mulatto", but sepia photographs are a little hard to interpret skin tone with, partly due to photographic techniques of the time tending to put a lot of light on the face, which can make people look lighter-skinned (Part of this is that contrast brings out facial detail in small photographs; part of it is a lot of the æsthetics of early photography were very much invented with white people in mind.)
