West of Tradition follows the rise of American single malt whiskey through Seattle’s Westland Distillery and many of the pioneers who combined tradition, local ingredients, and restless creativity to create a whole new frontier of taste. From the barley fields of the Pacific Northwest to distilleries across the country, the film explores how a small group of whiskey makers challenged assumptions about what American whiskey could be. Drawing inspiration from centuries of single malt tradition without simply copying it, they experimented with regional grains, native oak, local peat, new cask techniques, and distinctly American approaches to flavor. At the center of the story is Westland, a young distillery whose ambition helped turn an emerging style into an officially recognized American whiskey category. West of Tradition is a story of craft, place, risk, collaboration, and the pursuit of something genuinely new.
