What happens when music becomes a classroom — and a revolution?

In this chapter of Fela Kuti: Fear No Man, host Jad Abumrad takes us inside the moment when Fela Kuti stopped being just a musician and became a teacher — a man on a mission to decolonize the African mind. After returning to Nigeria in 1970, Fela’s sound and purpose transformed. His music turned into a weapon against oppression and a call for cultural rebirth.

Through the eyes of three young men — Duro Ikujenyo, Lemi Ghariokwu, and Idowu “Id” Mabinuori — we witness how Fela’s radical ideas reshaped a generation. What began as nightly jam sessions at the Kalakuta Republic grew into the Young African Pioneers, a youth movement powered by truth, rhythm, and rebellion.

This episode captures the moment Fela declared war on colonial education, challenged Western notions of philosophy, and inspired a cultural awakening that still echoes across the continent today.

About Fela Kuti: Fear No Man:

From Higher Ground Audio and Audible Originals comes an epic new documentary podcast from Jad Abumrad, creator of Radiolab and Dolly Parton’s America.

In a world on fire, what can art do? Fela Kuti: Fear No Man explores the life, music, and radical spirit of the Nigerian icon who invented Afrobeat — a sound that fused funk, jazz, and resistance into one of the most explosive musical movements of the 20th century.

Through vivid storytelling, original interviews, and rich archival sound, Jad Abumrad traces how Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s music became both a cultural revolution and a spiritual weapon. Featuring insights from Fela’s friends, family, and collaborators — and voices like Questlove, Ayo Edebiri, and even President Obama — this series asks: can music truly change the world?
