# We Play with Elizabeth Hargrave

Ashley Rose Young, Curator of American History in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, welcomes guests to the division’s America 250 symposium, Our Common Ground: 250 Years of Americans Engaging with Nature. She then highlights rare books and related materials from the division that demonstrate the many ways people have documented and celebrated American flora, fauna, and landscapes, from Thomas Say’s American Entomology to John James Audubon’s Birds of North America.

The event’s featured speaker, Elizabeth Hargrave, then presents her talk, “We Play.” Hargrave won the hearts of gaming enthusiasts with Wingspan, a board game inspired by her passion for birding and engagement with the natural world. Since then, many of her designs have continued to spotlight the richness and diversity of wildlife and ecosystems. In her talk, Hargrave reflects on the history of board game design and discusses her own creative practice as a maker driven by curiosity about the world around her.
