# Rachel Maxann: Hard Time Killing Floor Blues

Memphis singer and guitarist Rachel Maxann performing the song “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues,” from a field recording of Nehemiah “Skip” James, recorded by Bruce Jackson on October 27, 1964. From the Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian collection (AFC 2011/009: SR0826). Same song performed in a video of Jack Owens and Bud Spires, filmed by Alan Lomax for his film “The Land Where the Blues Began,” in Bentonia, Mississippi on August 12, 1978. From the Alan Lomax Collection (AFC 2004/004: TD84R07). The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress challenged musical artists to interpret material from its unparalleled archive of ethnographic recordings of traditional folk music. Artists were asked to put their own spin on these archival treasures, and to perform them at a special showcase during the Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City, Missouri in 2024. The showcase was recorded for this webcast.
