# Katherine Danzig oral history interview conducted by Laurel Gumpert, August 18, 2020

On 9/11, Katie, an officer in the NYPD, was sent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, near the Brooklyn Bridge. She assisted people who were fleeing the area, as well as those arriving on the bridge. The scene was chaotic, with debris, dust, and uncertainty surrounding her. Katie and her colleagues remained on-site throughout the night. As the night progressed, Katie and a colleague entered a makeshift morgue set up inside a Brooks Brothers store. One of the bags contained the body of a young girl. To sustain them through the hard work, a canteen truck provided them with bagel sandwiches despite the chaotic and unsanitary conditions. Katie also assisted with moving large acetylene torch cylinders used by welders at the scene. These cylinders were taller than she and required multiple people to transport. Katie's descriptions of working alongside different teams and performing various tasks, such as searching for property and belongings, highlight the diversity of roles and responsibilities that responders undertook. Along with many responders, Katie has suffered long-term health consequences from her work at Ground Zero, in the form of asthma.
