# Timothy Mayer oral history interview conducted by Avalon Mason, September 10, 2014

At the time of 9/11, Timmy was employed by National Grid. He was also a volunteer firefighter and had served four years in the Marine Corps. Timmy arrived at the World Trade Center site on September 13, 2001. The usually bustling streets of lower Manhattan were all but deserted except for debris, dust, and papers. National Grid primarily cleaned up oil spills and did environmental work. During his time at the site, which lasted until May of 2002, Timmy was responsible for distributing supplies to various staging areas, as well as decontaminating vehicles that were leaving the site. Timmy witnessed many examples of human kindness and generosity. While riding his quad through the site, he met a man who lived nearby and wanted to come to the site to see what he could do to help. He joined Timmy on his quad and assisted him with his efforts. They transported a group of firefighters in the quad's trailer to a place where they could get some rest before returning to work. Timmy also saw a limping woman. He gave her some Dr. Scholl's shoe inserts. He later ran into the same woman and saw her still limping. She had given the inserts to a firefighter who was in need. Timmy gave her another set for her use. Timmy is proud of the fact that he was able to do his part but does not consider himself a hero. He says he was there to do his job. He says the heroes from 9/11 are the volunteers.
