# Excerpts of Terese oral history interview conducted by Eliza Marcus, December 7, 2010

Terese, a New York massage therapist, felt she needed to help. Immediately after the attack, she packed up her massage table and went to the site–first setting up outside near the marina and then onboard the Spirit of New York, a small cruise ship that docked nearby. Working in a respite center with chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists, she initially gave 15-minute medical massages to rescue workers, often working in the “hot zone.” Later, she became a Red Cross Coordinator for these specialists -- creating a list of 400 licensed chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists who volunteered to help. She recalls several interactions, including one with a firefighter who had lost most of his House, and describes Ground Zero as a “city within a city” where everyone did whatever was needed to help. Despite contracting a lung infection, she stayed for weeks and is still emotional when recalling her experiences.
