# Whitman and Thoreau

In this segment of From the Vaults in Rare Books and Special Collections, we discuss two of America's most beloved figures -- Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau. In 1856, the two writers met for a "walk in talk" in Brooklyn on an autumn day and exchanged books, a gesture that quickly took on a life of its own.
