# Geographers on film: J. Warren Nystrom

Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Dr. J. Warren Nystrom discusses his education and career prior to becoming executive director of the Association of American Geographers (AAG). Dr. Nystrom was head of the Geography Department at University of Pittsburgh from 1943-1953. He then worked in the foreign policy department of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and was later a partner in an international relations consulting firm, as well as a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. During his tenure at Pittsurgh, and his time as executive director of the AAG, he has seen the field of geography grow in importance. Dr. Nystrom explains how geography and international affairs are related. He discusses the many jobs for geographers outside of academia and explains how geography plays a very important role in business and government.
