# Joyce Romain interview conducted by Christine Lewis and Patricia Francois, 2016-03-28.

Interviewer Patricia Francois sits down with interviewee Joyce Romain. Romain discusses working as a nanny; and her specialty: working as a doula for women with post-partum depression. She talks about her experience working as a nanny; tells a story about how one of her employers moved to Seattle and how she continued to have a relationship with that family; and discusses the differences between black (Caribbean) babies and white babies and their ability to survive. Her reflections on care-giving to babies as an integral part of Caribbean life illustrates the challenges the interviewers faced when trying to get domestic workers to talk about specific, trade-related "skills." In a way, care-giving is almost a traditional art form: one that is nurtured from a young age, and something that many of these women feel is part of their heritage.
