# The Great Masters—Strozzi: A Wandering Master

The Great Masters—Strozzi: A Wandering Master (Kultur, 1998) Running Time: 55 Minutes Near the end of the sixteenth century, Genoa was a rich and prospering city. It was in these stimulating surroundings that the most important Genoese painter, Bernardo Strozzi, grew up and lived a secluded but tormented life. Strozzi was apprenticed by his mother to the Sienese painter, Pietro Sorri. But when this master left Genoa, Bernardo, all too hastily withdrew into a Capuchin monastery, and for ten years he ruminated on the Manneristic skills that he had learned. Occasionally he enriched his style with a new stimuli gleaned from other masters who had arrived in Genoa, and it was in this way that the influence of two gigantic artistic personalities, Caravaggio, and Rubens, flooded into his painting. Having temporarily left the monastery to look after his mother, he set up both a flourishing workshop, and carried out civil engineering projects for the port. However, upon his mother’s death he was recalled by the monastery. But in order to avoid this, he became involved in certain vicissitudes that led to his flight to Venice in 1633. Here, in the city of the great masters of color, his painting and use of color met with extraordinary success. Then a priest, and presumably reconciled with the church, he died in 1644.
