The structure and function of the human spinal column are explained in animation and live action of divers, swimmers, an athlete, a typist, and X-ray motion pictures of the spine in movement. The 33 bones of the spinal column are shown on a skeleton; the upper bones joined to the base of the skull; the middle vertebrae joined to the ribs; and the lower vertebrae to the pelvis. The protection the spinal column gives to the spinal cord is shown in animation. The cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae are labeled. The natural curvatures of the normal spine are pointed out, as are the intervertebral discs and the openings in the vertebrae for nerves and blood vessels. The places of attachment of the muscles and ligaments are shown. The differences among the vertebrae are detailed and their function explained
