# 1986 VHS • Masters of Animation 60 FPS

Masters of Animation is a documentary exploring the history of animated film from the silent era through the mid-1980s, structured around interviews with and footage of the animators who shaped the art form. The American golden age is covered through Chuck Jones, who recounts the origins of Bugs Bunny at Warner Bros. beginning with Tex Avery's 1938 film The Wild Hare, and through Bob Clampett (Porky Pig), Tex Avery (Droopy), Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera (Tom and Jerry), Walter Lantz (Woody Woodpecker), Fritz Freleng (Speedy Gonzalez), and the United Productions of America (UPA), whose artists John Hubley and others broke from the Disney style after World War II. The documentary extends to experimental and international animation, featuring an extended section on Norman McLaren of the National Film Board of Canada, who is shown drawing and painting directly onto film stock, producing sound by scratching the optical track, and discussing his work over 45 years with the Film Board. European, British, and independent animators are also covered. The program closes with computer-generated animation as the emerging frontier, including early 3D work and the 1984 computer-animated film Tony de Peltrie by Pierre Lachapelle, Philippe Bergeron, and Pierre Robidoux.
