# Iceland : Fire and Ice

It is no wonder that sagas and myths abound in Iceland. To its early Nordic settlers, surely only magic or the monumental struggles of gods could explain this land of eternal opposites and violent extremes. It is home to the largest geyser in the world and the largest ice cap, a place where glaciers sit on top of volcanoes, and enormous waterfalls sculpt the land. Half of the year, the land is frozen in ice, while bubbling hot springs bathe the hills in steamy mists. A relatively small country, it is virtually uninhabited, and still wonderfully wild. The protective isolation of the island and the bounty of the surrounding sea make it a haven for birds of all kinds. Whooper swans, gyrfalcons, ptarmigans, geese, puffins, and ducks are attracted by the millions. Resident Icelanders are able to make good use of this bounty, harmlessly "farming" eider ducks for their warm down, and collecting eggs from cliffdwelling seabirds, all while surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of this land of fire and ice. 1 videocassette (57 min.) : 1/2 in Originally produced for BBC-TV, c1998 VHS
