# 中央公論 1928.12

Chūō Kōron (中央公論, "The Central Review") is a Japanese monthly general-interest magazine first published in 1887. It grew out of Hanseikai Zasshi (反省会雑誌), the bulletin of the Buddhist temperance society Hanseikai (反省会) founded in 1886; the title was changed to Hansei Zasshi in 1892 and to Chūō Kōron in January 1899. From the late Meiji era through the Taishō and early Shōwa periods it was one of Japan's leading general-interest magazines, shaping public debate on politics, society, and culture; during the Taishō period in particular it published many liberal and progressive essays and was a leading venue for debates on political reforms. Its literary pages helped launch the careers of many Japanese writers.
