[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:20] Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
[0:22] Speaker 1: have a guest joining us. Check him out at Yahoo Sports.
[0:26] Speaker 1: Charles McDonald, what's going on?
[0:29] Speaker 2: Nothing much. Good to be here, especially coming off a big,
[0:33] Speaker 2: national TV Falcons win this weekend, you know, beating down
[0:36] Speaker 2: on that Minnesota Vikings. So I think this is the
[0:38] Speaker 2: first time that I've had something positive to say about
[0:40] Speaker 2: the Falcons around you. So that was a nice way
[0:43] Speaker 2: to cap the weekend off.
[0:44] Speaker 1: We're going to get to that. The first point I'm
[0:45] Speaker 1: going to make is I'm going to do everything I can.
[0:47] Speaker 1: I guess it doesn't have to come up too much anymore.
[0:49] Speaker 1: I'm going to call you Charles McDonald and not Charles
[0:50] Speaker 1: Robinson because I'm totally the guy at this point in
[0:53] Speaker 1: my life where I'm playing the neighborhood play on all
[0:55] Speaker 1: these names. Poor Justin Jefferson. I call him his brother's
[0:58] Speaker 1: name like I'm his mama. You know what I'm saying?
[1:01] Speaker 1: Those of you who don't understand me calling Justin Jefferson
[1:05] Speaker 1: Jordan Jefferson, clearly if you are a man, you don't
[1:08] Speaker 1: have a brother because this is just how it works
[1:10] Speaker 1: from time to time. If it's two of y'all, Y'all
[1:13] Speaker 1: going to get called by the other night. I will
[1:16] Speaker 1: say right fast about the Falcons. I was watching the
[1:19] Speaker 1: game against the Vikings, and I had to text you,
[1:22] Speaker 1: and I was like, yo, Falcons is out here looking
[1:25] Speaker 1: like Bama, dog. They was out here jumping routes. They
[1:28] Speaker 1: was getting heat.
[1:31] Speaker 2: And I'm looking like, Vikings, y'all okay? Because, look, I
[1:35] Speaker 2: know they spent a lot on this defense, right? Three
[1:38] Speaker 2: first-round picks on two rookie edge rushers because they traded
[1:41] Speaker 2: up for James Pierce. Then they added Xavier Watson and
[1:45] Speaker 2: Billy Bowman on day two of the draft to play
[1:48] Speaker 2: safety and then nickel for them. So you took one
[1:51] Speaker 2: of the worst defenses in football last year, and you
[1:53] Speaker 2: added four rookies and Devine Diablo, who's like a dirty
[1:56] Speaker 2: man linebacker kind of guy from the Raiders. Shouldn't be
[1:59] Speaker 2: whipping you all that bad. I'm a little excited about
[2:04] Speaker 2: where they are after that game, but if I was
[2:06] Speaker 2: a Vikings fan, I'd be freaking out because– Their backup
[2:10] Speaker 2: offensive linemen in there who are for Derrissaw and Ryan Kelly,
[2:13] Speaker 2: the center, they can't get it done. J.J. McCarthy clearly
[2:16] Speaker 2: is not ready to get it done when the circumstances
[2:20] Speaker 2: are not perfect around him. So that's a red alert
[2:23] Speaker 2: for the Vikings to me more than it really is
[2:24] Speaker 2: like a big cheering on for the Falcons.
[2:27] Speaker 1: Yo, I think it could get really weird for them.
[2:29] Speaker 1: McCarthy is now hurt. Maybe you know off the top
[2:33] Speaker 1: of your head who that means is going to be
[2:35] Speaker 1: the quarterback.
[2:36] Speaker 2: Carson Wentz.
[2:37] Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. I did see Prince Harry on the sideline.
[2:42] Speaker 1: That's right.
[2:43] Speaker 2: Yeah. Right?
[2:44] Speaker 1: He started. I don't think I fully realized how much
[2:46] Speaker 1: Carson Wentz looked like Prince Harry until I saw him
[2:49] Speaker 1: on the sideline of that game. And I was like,
[2:50] Speaker 1: what's Prince Harry doing there? And I was like, damn,
[2:52] Speaker 1: wait a minute. Is that Carson Wentz?
[2:55] Speaker 2: I saw something. He's about to break a record for
[2:58] Speaker 2: most consecutive seasons starting a game for a different team.
[3:02] Speaker 2: I think he's about to hit six teams in six seasons.
[3:05] Speaker 2: since that Eagles template. Honestly, you could have told me
[3:07] Speaker 2: that he hasn't played since Jalen Hurts took his job,
[3:10] Speaker 2: and I would also believe that too.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Okay, so he has played for the Eagles. He has
[3:16] Speaker 1: played for the Chiefs. He has played for the Colts.
[3:22] Speaker 1: He is now playing for the Vikings. Who are the
[3:26] Speaker 1: other two?
[3:28] Speaker 2: The Commanders is one.
[3:30] Speaker 1: Oh, that's right.
[3:30] Speaker 2: That did happen. Was he in the Rams like the
[3:34] Speaker 2: zombie year when they had Baker and stuff like that? Yes,
[3:37] Speaker 2: he was.
[3:37] Speaker 1: He was. Yes, he was. Yo, so what's wild about
[3:40] Speaker 1: this is I never thought he was terrible. Like, he
[3:46] Speaker 1: is a clear example of what happens when people don't
[3:48] Speaker 1: like you that much. Because you can figure this out
[3:51] Speaker 1: in some other way. Like, I mean... He lost his
[3:54] Speaker 1: job to Jalen Hurts. By the way, he should have
[3:57] Speaker 1: lost his job to Jalen Hurts. But Jalen Hurts is
[4:01] Speaker 1: get the job and keep it guy. Not I ran
[4:04] Speaker 1: you off your corner guy. Right. He ran him off.
[4:08] Speaker 1: In fact, wasn't that part of what we were thinking?
[4:10] Speaker 1: Is that part of what got Doug Peterson fired? Was
[4:13] Speaker 1: that he was like, no, no, no. We're going with
[4:15] Speaker 1: this dude. And they was like, what are you, crazy?
[4:17] Speaker 1: And then look what happened.
[4:18] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it really is fascinating, though, because, dude,
[4:23] Speaker 2: I remember– Well, shoot, I mean, I was about to say,
[4:25] Speaker 2: it feels like the other day, but this is what,
[4:27] Speaker 2: eight years ago now when people are doing the Wentz
[4:29] Speaker 2: versus Dak wars. And, uh, uh, like Carson got a
[4:33] Speaker 2: big contract extension. Like that was market rate at the time.
[4:37] Speaker 2: Like you said, he wasn't bad, but the thing is
[4:39] Speaker 2: like his body just died on him. Cause he was
[4:41] Speaker 2: such a, he was a powerhouse, like athlete, uh, big
[4:44] Speaker 2: arm fast, but you know, not the most like, uh,
[4:48] Speaker 2: I guess detailed guy sometimes between the numbers because he
[4:51] Speaker 2: Like that last season he had, that was huge. They
[4:53] Speaker 2: were really only good on third down, but shoot, that's
[4:56] Speaker 2: enough to lead an offense that can get you somewhere
[4:58] Speaker 2: close to the Super Bowl. And then all the injuries happen.
[5:00] Speaker 2: And then people was like, eh, only tolerated you because
[5:03] Speaker 2: you had the big arm and you're running four or five.
[5:05] Speaker 2: Now that you're not doing that no more, you might
[5:07] Speaker 2: got to get out of here.
[5:09] Speaker 1: All-time weird quarterback draft 2016. Jared Goff, Carson Wentz are
[5:14] Speaker 1: the top two picks. A gentleman that some of you
[5:17] Speaker 1: may remember, but probably don't. Paxton Lynch, the first round
[5:21] Speaker 1: pick to Stephen Jones, had to save Jerry from taking,
[5:24] Speaker 1: who was out of the league in like 30, 45 minutes.
[5:28] Speaker 1: I can't even remember exactly.
[5:29] Speaker 2: I don't even think he had 150 passing attempts in
[5:32] Speaker 2: the NFL.
[5:33] Speaker 1: Yo, hold on. I forgot who else was in this draft.
[5:35] Speaker 1: Christian Hackenberg.
[5:37] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[5:38] Speaker 1: Oh, wow. Connor Cook. I forgot. But the guy, the
[5:40] Speaker 1: guy who turned out to be the guy. Dak Prescott
[5:45] Speaker 1: fourth round pick hold on Jacoby Brissett was a third
[5:48] Speaker 1: round pick in that draft Cody Kessler was a third
[5:50] Speaker 1: round pick in that draft then we get to Connor
[5:52] Speaker 1: Cook and yeah Dak Prescott who I I have tried
[5:58] Speaker 1: to figure out for a long time how it is
[6:00] Speaker 1: that he slipped that far in the draft like two-time
[6:02] Speaker 1: first team all SEC quarterback had the size has the
[6:06] Speaker 1: physical tools and I think it just really came down
[6:09] Speaker 1: to one thing. And some of you are going to
[6:11] Speaker 1: say he caught a DUI and that's part of it.
[6:14] Speaker 1: But you know what it was.
[6:16] Speaker 2: Which is funny because he's got the temperament that they like,
[6:18] Speaker 2: you know.
[6:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[6:20] Speaker 2: But that that that. Hold on.
[6:22] Speaker 1: Hold on. Hold on. For those of you who don't
[6:24] Speaker 1: know the thing that I'm talking about. These white boys
[6:27] Speaker 1: whooped his ass at Panama City Beach during spring break
[6:30] Speaker 1: one time, but it was caught on video. I mean,
[6:32] Speaker 1: they whooped his ass. And I feel like it was
[6:36] Speaker 1: the fair one, though. I don't want to say they
[6:37] Speaker 1: whooped his ass like he got jumped. He squared up
[6:40] Speaker 1: and just got his ass kicked, and you just had
[6:41] Speaker 1: to decide whether that was a man that you could
[6:43] Speaker 1: follow into battle.
[6:46] Speaker 2: Which is fair, because I swear, someone brings up that
[6:49] Speaker 2: video to me at least twice a year, and that
[6:51] Speaker 2: happened 10 years ago, dog. It was a legendary ass whooping,
[6:55] Speaker 2: but The Dak Prescott pick is fascinating to me because
[6:59] Speaker 2: it was kind of like they just said, eh, okay,
[7:01] Speaker 2: I guess we'll do it. Because for those who don't
[7:03] Speaker 2: remember with the draft that year, that was the last
[7:05] Speaker 2: year that teams weren't allowed to trade their compensatory picks.
[7:10] Speaker 2: If you have a free agent who signs somewhere to
[7:13] Speaker 2: another team, the following year you get a pick. So
[7:16] Speaker 2: the Cowboys, they had this fourth round compensatory pick that
[7:18] Speaker 2: they couldn't trade. So they tried to get Paxton Lynch,
[7:21] Speaker 2: couldn't do it. They tried to trade for Connor Cook.
[7:23] Speaker 2: Couldn't do it. So they're sitting here with this fourth
[7:25] Speaker 2: round pick that they can't trade. They need a backup
[7:27] Speaker 2: for Tony Romo. They're like, all right, let's just take
[7:30] Speaker 2: Dak Prescott. He's the last one.
[7:33] Speaker 1: And he took his job. Also, they had, everybody says
[7:35] Speaker 1: the greatest thing to have is a young quarterback that's
[7:38] Speaker 1: good on a cost control contract. And they had that.
[7:41] Speaker 1: And Dak Prescott was like, enough of that. I'm the
[7:47] Speaker 1: new Kirk Cousins. I'm getting every dime of surplus. And
[7:51] Speaker 1: shout out to Ryan. for letting us know it was
[7:55] Speaker 1: at a Waka Flocka Flame concert that Dak Prescott got
[8:00] Speaker 1: tuned up by those Caucasians.
[8:03] Speaker 2: Not at the Waka concert. You can fight at the
[8:05] Speaker 2: Waka concert, but you can't get beat up by white
[8:07] Speaker 2: people at.
[8:07] Speaker 1: The Waka concert. I guess that means that Dak ain't
[8:10] Speaker 1: got no hands.
[8:13] Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
[8:18] Speaker 1: You get it?
[8:18] Speaker 2: I get it. I get it.
[8:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:20] Speaker 2: Yeah. I've heard that song before. Yeah. I'm 31. That's
[8:25] Speaker 2: very much my era. You know?
[8:27] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:27] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[8:27] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:28] Speaker 2: Fair.
[8:29] Speaker 1: It's wild to think how old that song is now. But,
[8:31] Speaker 1: you know, I just had to throw it out there.
[8:33] Speaker 1: No hands. But we got to there because we talked
[8:37] Speaker 1: about J.J. McCarthy being hurt. And it's already week three.
[8:40] Speaker 1: And we got a lot to talk about with quarterbacks
[8:43] Speaker 1: being hurt. It looks like Jaden Daniels might not play
[8:47] Speaker 1: in week three. Joe Burrow looks like he won't play
[8:53] Speaker 1: in 2025. We got Brock Purdy. He looks like he's
[8:58] Speaker 1: going to be out for a minute. I've seen a
[9:01] Speaker 1: few people try to hypothesize exactly why it is that
[9:04] Speaker 1: all the quarterbacks are getting hurt. I don't have the
[9:07] Speaker 1: answer for that right there. I do think the Joe
[9:10] Speaker 1: Burrow one is interesting because Joe Burrow, and I'm curious
[9:14] Speaker 1: what you think about this. You are somebody that knows
[9:16] Speaker 1: more actual football than I do. What I remember the
[9:20] Speaker 1: first time I saw like the 2019 LSU Joe Burrow,
[9:25] Speaker 1: I watched him play one series early in the season
[9:28] Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, okay. If they beat Alabama,
[9:33] Speaker 1: they're going to win the national championship and he's going
[9:36] Speaker 1: to be um the number one pick in the draft
[9:39] Speaker 1: he's going to win the Heisman and what I saw
[9:41] Speaker 1: was a dude that moved really well in the pocket
[9:45] Speaker 1: like not running fast but he dropped back he move
[9:49] Speaker 1: up he go to the side he keep his eyes
[9:51] Speaker 1: down the field he do all of those things and
[9:54] Speaker 1: he get it done but that is also a more
[9:58] Speaker 1: positive end of one of the more damning characteristics of
[10:02] Speaker 1: quarterback and have which is takes too long to throw
[10:06] Speaker 1: right He holds the ball for a long time. He
[10:09] Speaker 1: gets great results in holding the ball for a long time, right?
[10:12] Speaker 1: He can overcome it. And normally you need to be
[10:14] Speaker 1: like a Cam Newton, huge physical specimen to be the
[10:18] Speaker 1: guy that overcomes holding the ball for that long. No,
[10:20] Speaker 1: Joe Burrow does it by getting it done just in
[10:23] Speaker 1: time and being willing to get the dog shit knocked
[10:25] Speaker 1: out of him in the process. And this is going
[10:27] Speaker 1: to shock you. but he misses a lot of games. Now,
[10:30] Speaker 1: I've seen people who blame the Bengals for not investing
[10:33] Speaker 1: in the offensive line, which is a fair point somewhat, right?
[10:37] Speaker 1: It does take us back to one of the great dilemmas.
[10:40] Speaker 1: The Lions and the Bengals in the same season in
[10:42] Speaker 1: the first round took probable Hall of Famers in Jamar
[10:45] Speaker 1: Chase and Panay Sewell. And no matter how good Jamar
[10:48] Speaker 1: Chase is, It's always been fair to ask if they
[10:50] Speaker 1: took the wrong guy, just because Joe Burrow keeps getting
[10:52] Speaker 1: knocked around. But the point I want to make, and
[10:55] Speaker 1: it's a point that if you listen to this show,
[10:56] Speaker 1: you know I make all the time, sacks are a
[10:58] Speaker 1: quarterback's stat. He takes a lot of sacks, and he'll
[11:02] Speaker 1: do that if he is playing behind an eight-man offensive line,
[11:04] Speaker 1: because he's always going to be back there waiting. But
[11:08] Speaker 1: I also don't know how much they put around him. Like,
[11:11] Speaker 1: is this just going to be what it is, you think,
[11:13] Speaker 1: with him?
[11:14] Speaker 2: I think this is probably just what it is with
[11:16] Speaker 2: him for the future.
[11:17] Speaker 1: I mean.
[11:19] Speaker 2: The thing with Joe is, like, he's tried the I'm
[11:23] Speaker 2: not going to drop back there and get beat up
[11:27] Speaker 2: when it was early last season and then I think
[11:29] Speaker 2: part of the season before when he was coming off
[11:30] Speaker 2: the wrist injury. It doesn't work for him. You know,
[11:34] Speaker 2: he turns into, like, this ultra conservative throwing for three
[11:37] Speaker 2: yards a pass. It just doesn't fit with his play style,
[11:40] Speaker 2: which is kind of interesting because it's not like he has, like,
[11:43] Speaker 2: the big arm. He's just got, like, good arm talent,
[11:47] Speaker 2: I guess, where you can just kind of put it
[11:48] Speaker 2: in spots where he needs to, but, uh, like that
[11:51] Speaker 2: lack of like high end physical talent. Like there's a
[11:54] Speaker 2: reason why like Lamar and Josh Allen can play like that.
[11:56] Speaker 2: They don't, they don't really miss games, you know, because
[11:59] Speaker 2: they've got the talent to get away from those hits
[12:01] Speaker 2: and not take the big hits. But Joe, when it
[12:03] Speaker 2: gets to sit in duck mode and he's waiting that
[12:05] Speaker 2: one last second for Jamar chase to hit, like the,
[12:08] Speaker 2: to pass that second defender window. So we can go
[12:10] Speaker 2: off for a seven yard touchdown. That's when he's getting crushed.
[12:12] Speaker 2: And especially when they got the backup offensive lineman in, uh, who's, uh,
[12:17] Speaker 2: They got torched by Jacksonville in the first half. I
[12:20] Speaker 2: just think this is probably always what it's going to be,
[12:22] Speaker 2: but it's not like you can get rid of that.
[12:25] Speaker 2: As long as you can just mitigate some of the
[12:26] Speaker 2: damage up front and just keep spamming picks to the
[12:29] Speaker 2: offensive line and hope those guys stay healthy, it's about
[12:32] Speaker 2: all you can do because I don't really know where
[12:33] Speaker 2: else you would go from here.
[12:35] Speaker 1: This is, to me, the interesting Joe Burrow question, and
[12:39] Speaker 1: I say this as a guy who enjoys Joe Burrow.
[12:43] Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is all good with me. I like his get-downs.
[12:46] Speaker 1: I like the way he plays. I just want to
[12:49] Speaker 1: point out that I have never seen Joe Burrow be
[12:55] Speaker 1: successful without excellent talent to get the ball to, right?
[13:05] Speaker 1: It's not his fault that he has excellent talent, and
[13:08] Speaker 1: I'm not sure that everybody could do as well as
[13:12] Speaker 1: he can with the excellent talent that we're discussing, but Look, man,
[13:16] Speaker 1: it is entirely possible that we'll look back at 2019
[13:19] Speaker 1: LSU as having three Hall of Famers on offense, a quarterback,
[13:24] Speaker 1: and two wide receivers. It almost looks like a foregone conclusion.
[13:28] Speaker 1: Imagine if somebody in the NFL was throwing to Jamar
[13:31] Speaker 1: Chase and Justin Jefferson, who, if I'm not mistaken, might
[13:34] Speaker 1: have even been the number three receiver on that team, right?
[13:37] Speaker 2: He was definitely number two, yeah. Yeah, right.
[13:40] Speaker 1: But that's what he had, and what we saw was
[13:42] Speaker 1: maybe the greatest college offense that there has ever been.
[13:46] Speaker 1: That first year with the Bengals, before he got hurt,
[13:49] Speaker 1: it was cool, but it sure looked a lot different
[13:51] Speaker 1: once Jamar Chase showed up again, right? And then it's
[13:55] Speaker 1: Jamar Chase and it's Tee Higgins and Joe Mixon was
[13:58] Speaker 1: still giving you something in the backfield.
[14:00] Speaker 2: Tyler Boyd was the wide receiver three for a little bit.
[14:02] Speaker 2: He still had something in the tank, you know? Right.
[14:04] Speaker 1: So the question to be asked is, I think it's
[14:07] Speaker 1: fair to say, or to question whether or not the
[14:09] Speaker 1: Bengals have over-invested in receivers, you know, in a salary
[14:14] Speaker 1: cap sport, right? We were like, you got to give
[14:16] Speaker 1: the money to Trey Hendrickson, but we're like, hey, they
[14:18] Speaker 1: decided to give the money to T. Higgins, so how
[14:20] Speaker 1: do we figure this out? But, and I want to
[14:23] Speaker 1: be very clear about this.
[14:25] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:26] Speaker 1: I'm not out here saying that the Bengals know what
[14:29] Speaker 1: they're doing. I don't want.
[14:30] Speaker 2: You to think that I'm automatically giving them the benefit
[14:34] Speaker 2: of the doubt.
[14:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's one of those blink two times
[14:39] Speaker 1: if you're okay, Beaumont. Y'all been listening to this show.
[14:41] Speaker 1: You know how I feel about this. But what if
[14:43] Speaker 1: the Bengals decided that actually Joe Burrow is in the
[14:47] Speaker 1: category of the Kirk Cousins in that you need to
[14:52] Speaker 1: get it cracking around them. to really make it happen.
[14:57] Speaker 2: Which, which is ultimately fine. Cause like you have proof
[15:00] Speaker 2: that this can, like you have proof that, you know,
[15:02] Speaker 2: if I got Joe Burrow and a dude or two
[15:04] Speaker 2: on the outside, we can have the best passing game.
[15:07] Speaker 1: Right.
[15:07] Speaker 2: Like pretty comfortably. I mean, you do even, what's kind of,
[15:10] Speaker 2: messed up and fun about the bangles as someone who's
[15:13] Speaker 2: not a bangles fan is their defense being so bad
[15:16] Speaker 2: has just produced like some incredible like fever hero ball
[15:20] Speaker 2: from burrow chase and higgins where they're just like bro
[15:22] Speaker 2: we gotta have it on this drive every drive uh
[15:25] Speaker 2: like the charge the chargers game last year uh where
[15:29] Speaker 2: justin herbert had a big game against their defense and
[15:30] Speaker 2: then eventually jamar chase and t higgins said no no
[15:33] Speaker 2: no no we're the we're the superstars here we gotta
[15:35] Speaker 2: drag it across the finish line but that's not really
[15:38] Speaker 2: a sustainable way to like win games. It's fun to watch,
[15:40] Speaker 2: but when you get down to it, their defense just
[15:43] Speaker 2: isn't good enough. Before the Jaguars Jaguared out and couldn't
[15:46] Speaker 2: do that, couldn't finish the game as they wanted to,
[15:49] Speaker 2: they were moving the ball pretty well. And then Joe
[15:51] Speaker 2: Flacco and the Browns were moving the ball pretty well too.
[15:53] Speaker 2: So it's kind of hard to parse where you go
[15:56] Speaker 2: with your resources here because obviously he needs offensive line
[16:00] Speaker 2: help if he's going to be the guy that's going
[16:02] Speaker 2: to play like he is. And that's the best way
[16:03] Speaker 2: for him to utilize his talent. So you got to
[16:06] Speaker 2: honestly continue to enforce that by getting off into the linemen,
[16:09] Speaker 2: but man, this defense, like, dude, you're not serving Lamar
[16:12] Speaker 2: Jackson or Derrick Henry, so I guess you gotta keep
[16:14] Speaker 2: trying to score 40 points a game. It's a tough
[16:17] Speaker 2: life to live.
[16:18] Speaker 1: Yeah, but you gotta, at the very least, you gotta
[16:21] Speaker 1: go get that, get a tackle, left or right, right?
[16:24] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[16:25] Speaker 1: I talked about this on the show, I could be wrong, man,
[16:27] Speaker 1: but I feel like the hit rate on them tackles
[16:31] Speaker 1: is high, man.
[16:33] Speaker 2: They drafted one last year, but he was hurt this week.
[16:36] Speaker 2: Amarius Mills from Georgia. Yeah. I mean, that was the
[16:39] Speaker 2: thing at Georgia. He was hurt a lot. When he's
[16:41] Speaker 2: on the field, he's incredible. But you got to be
[16:43] Speaker 2: on the field, bro.
[16:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, so one thing that's always interesting about the Bengals,
[16:47] Speaker 1: and you know, historically, they were known for drafting Big
[16:50] Speaker 1: Ten players because they did not invest in scouts. So
[16:53] Speaker 1: they just got a lot of guys that were very close.
[16:58] Speaker 4: But you would think that for a school that was
[17:00] Speaker 4: as decidedly cheap or not a school, but a team
[17:04] Speaker 4: that's as decidedly cheap as they are, you would think
[17:07] Speaker 4: their college game would.
[17:09] Speaker 1: Be so on point, right? Because they got to get
[17:11] Speaker 1: the most out of these cats when they don't cost
[17:13] Speaker 1: no money. No, it doesn't really seem to go that way,
[17:17] Speaker 1: but it feels like everybody else sees a left tackle,
[17:19] Speaker 1: gets a left tackle. Problem solved, right? The whatchamacallem, the Chargers,
[17:24] Speaker 1: they drafted two left tackles in four years.
[17:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it did. And look, I should... rephrase some
[17:32] Speaker 2: of what I said about the Bengals because it's not
[17:35] Speaker 2: like they haven't tried to put defenders into, tried to
[17:39] Speaker 2: put resources into this defense where, you know, you've seen
[17:42] Speaker 2: the talent walk out over the years. Guys like Jesse
[17:44] Speaker 2: Bates in Atlanta, DJ Reader, Jermaine Pratt, who has some
[17:48] Speaker 2: good years for them. So they've tried, you know, they've
[17:51] Speaker 2: got two first round picks on the defensive line in
[17:53] Speaker 2: Jamar Stewart and Miles Murphy since then. They've got another
[17:57] Speaker 2: second round pick in Chris Jenkins Jr. They've got a
[17:59] Speaker 2: second round pick at linebacker Demetrius Knight They've got a
[18:02] Speaker 2: multitude of first, second, and third-round picks in the defensive backfield.
[18:05] Speaker 2: This is all in the past three or four years.
[18:07] Speaker 2: So they have really, really tried to put talent. They
[18:10] Speaker 2: just missed every single pick that they've tried on defense
[18:16] Speaker 2: they've missed so far in the past three or four years.
[18:19] Speaker 2: So they've got to keep playing Big 12 ball. That's
[18:22] Speaker 2: all they've got.
[18:22] Speaker 1: So I'm going to throw a couple things out here
[18:24] Speaker 1: for people. If you did not know this about Amarius Mims,
[18:27] Speaker 1: here are his dimensions from the combine. six foot seven
[18:32] Speaker 1: and three quarters, 340 pounds. and had the nerve to
[18:38] Speaker 1: run a 5.07 in the 40s. That is terrifying. Did
[18:44] Speaker 1: you see, what was his name, Josh Simmons, when he
[18:46] Speaker 1: went and got that dude on the interception in the
[18:49] Speaker 1: Chiefs-Eagles game? And Josh Simmons is the Chiefs' rookie left tackle.
[18:53] Speaker 1: He went to Ohio State. And one of my favorite
[18:55] Speaker 1: things in the NFL is anything that allows one of
[18:58] Speaker 1: these linemen to have to stretch it out or run
[19:01] Speaker 1: for like, get the... where the height matters, right? And
[19:04] Speaker 1: so they're stretching those legs out and they have time
[19:06] Speaker 1: to get up some speed. Hey, man, I can't imagine
[19:09] Speaker 1: how much it hurt that dude to catch that shoulder
[19:10] Speaker 1: and them thighs from that big old dude.
[19:13] Speaker 2: Bro, he tore his patella tendon less than a year ago.
[19:18] Speaker 2: That is the crazy thing to me. Out of Ohio
[19:21] Speaker 2: State last year, he tore his patella tendon in October
[19:23] Speaker 2: or November in the middle of their season. And You know,
[19:27] Speaker 2: because Nate Tice, who I do the show with, Football 301,
[19:30] Speaker 2: we were kind of looking at him this summer like, man,
[19:33] Speaker 2: he's a freak athlete. Like, what if he's one of
[19:35] Speaker 2: those guys like an Adrian Peterson type where, oh, you know,
[19:37] Speaker 2: I'm Wolverine. I'm back in a second. And then he
[19:40] Speaker 2: was back, full participant for the first day of full
[19:43] Speaker 2: pads of Chiefs training camp. I was like, what? I
[19:47] Speaker 2: used to know that Patel intended to tear his career under.
[19:49] Speaker 2: And you're back in like 10 months? Full speed, full pads? Like, no,
[19:54] Speaker 2: that boy's built different. But that's one guy. Get pad about,
[19:57] Speaker 2: you know, a few more of those. And maybe we
[19:59] Speaker 2: can start talking about the Chiefs getting back to where
[20:01] Speaker 2: they used to be. Because I hate watching that now.
[20:03] Speaker 2: I hate it.
[20:03] Speaker 1: It's so boring. Yeah, we talked about this. It feels
[20:05] Speaker 1: like work. Like I say, it's like watching your favorite
[20:08] Speaker 1: artist perform. a little bit past their prime. But I
[20:10] Speaker 1: want to ask this right fast about the Bengals, though.
[20:12] Speaker 1: Perhaps the solution is, I feel like they don't have
[20:15] Speaker 1: nearly as many arrestable players as they used to. Is
[20:18] Speaker 1: that what it feels like? I don't feel like we
[20:21] Speaker 1: talk about them like maybe they need to started getting
[20:24] Speaker 1: some cats living on the edge a little bit more, right?
[20:27] Speaker 1: Like Vontaze Perfect, who, by the way, is coaching people now.
[20:29] Speaker 1: He did not count as arrestable, but he played football
[20:33] Speaker 1: as though he was arrestable. If I am not mistaken,
[20:36] Speaker 1: I saw that Vontaze Perfect was coaching somewhere now. Let
[20:39] Speaker 1: me look this up to make sure that I have
[20:41] Speaker 1: not completely lost my mind. But I saw him doing
[20:44] Speaker 1: something that I was like, there's no way that Vontaze
[20:48] Speaker 1: Perfect is doing this.
[20:50] Speaker 2: At UNLV?
[20:52] Speaker 1: Yes, he is. He's a defensive analyst. That's right. My bad.
[20:55] Speaker 1: I did not get this wrong. Of course, maybe the
[20:58] Speaker 1: argument is the only place that you could get Vontaze
[21:01] Speaker 1: Perfect as a coach is in Las Vegas. But Paul Gunther,
[21:06] Speaker 1: former defensive coordinator at the Bengals, brought Perfect. That tells
[21:12] Speaker 1: you that Vontaze Perfect is one of these guys that
[21:14] Speaker 1: if you know him, you just love him.
[21:15] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes. Once he's your guy, he's your guy.
[21:19] Speaker 2: And there's nothing that anyone can say. Look, I know
[21:22] Speaker 2: what you saw is bad, but trust me. Once you
[21:23] Speaker 2: get around him a little bit, it'll be okay. It'll
[21:26] Speaker 2: be okay. And Burfik was fascinating because I remember watching–
[21:30] Speaker 2: he was one of the first YouTube athletes that we
[21:33] Speaker 2: kind of got captured with as far as people in
[21:36] Speaker 2: my generation just trying to figure out what's out there.
[21:40] Speaker 2: And I thought that– I remember so specifically there was
[21:43] Speaker 2: this video the highlight video was like Fonte's birthday. Cause he,
[21:46] Speaker 2: could he be the next Ray Lewis? And you watch
[21:48] Speaker 2: those clips. You're like, shoot, I don't know. Maybe, maybe
[21:51] Speaker 2: he could. And then he came out at the combine
[21:54] Speaker 2: around five second 40 dog.
[21:57] Speaker 1: He is the best player. He's the best college player
[22:01] Speaker 1: I've ever seen that the entire league said, no thanks
[22:05] Speaker 1: to him. As I recall, he made it all the
[22:10] Speaker 1: way down. the end.
[22:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, he was undrafted.
[22:15] Speaker 1: He was undrafted. He was a first team All-American as
[22:20] Speaker 1: a junior. He got invited to the combine.
[22:26] Speaker 2: He was amazing. He was a really good college player.
[22:29] Speaker 1: Yes. No, I cannot imagine what, first of all, I
[22:31] Speaker 1: can't imagine what it was like to try to coach him.
[22:33] Speaker 1: And he had this pension, but he's illegal hits that
[22:35] Speaker 1: of course, the most memorable thing that he did in
[22:38] Speaker 1: his time in Cincinnati was on that. It was that
[22:42] Speaker 1: last drive against the Steelers that may or may not
[22:45] Speaker 1: have changed Antonio Brown's life forever. It was the end
[22:49] Speaker 1: of that game. They had AJ McCarron at quarterback. I remember,
[22:52] Speaker 1: and they were set up to win it. And I'm
[22:54] Speaker 1: talking about how the bangles used to have arrestable players
[22:57] Speaker 1: and they I mean, they really used to have arrestable players,
[23:00] Speaker 1: but their thing was they like shopping for bargains and
[23:03] Speaker 1: they get a lot of open box specials and they
[23:05] Speaker 1: get dudes that was on the edge in ways that,
[23:08] Speaker 1: depending on who you were talking about, were okay. And
[23:11] Speaker 1: some of them were absolutely indefensible. But anyway, the end
[23:14] Speaker 1: of that game was Jeremy Hill making a fumble. Pac-Man
[23:18] Speaker 1: Jones losing it completely at the end, and Vontaze Burfeet
[23:24] Speaker 1: catching that 15-yard penalty. The three most bangle bangles on
[23:29] Speaker 1: the whole team. The most bangle bangles that they had,
[23:33] Speaker 1: and they all fell apart at the worst time.
[23:37] Speaker 2: That reminds me, a couple weeks ago, I've been reading
[23:41] Speaker 2: about Chris Henry Jr., you know, late Chris Henry. His
[23:44] Speaker 2: son is a monster football player. But I was reading
[23:49] Speaker 2: something that Pac-Man Jones had been raising.
[23:52] Speaker 1: That's right. He's like his play date. Yeah.
[23:54] Speaker 2: And I was like, huh, that's interesting, isn't it? And
[23:58] Speaker 2: then I also read over the past few years, T.J.
[24:00] Speaker 2: Houshman has been getting a little bit more involved. and
[24:03] Speaker 2: helping him train and get ready for football stuff. So
[24:06] Speaker 2: I was like, I would love to know what some
[24:09] Speaker 2: of the conversations were there between TJ and Pac-Man about
[24:12] Speaker 2: steering this young man.
[24:13] Speaker 1: Well, look, man, that's because Chris Henry appears to be another.
[24:17] Speaker 1: You just got to be around him. And if you are,
[24:20] Speaker 1: you'll come to love this guy, right? That's how it goes.
[24:23] Speaker 1: By the way, check this text I just sent you.
[24:25] Speaker 1: I think it may be an explanation for the change
[24:27] Speaker 1: in direction for Vontaze Burfeet.
[24:30] Speaker 2: Ha, ha, ha.
[24:34] Speaker 1: Just like, just, hold on, I'm going to send you
[24:36] Speaker 1: another one. I believe that sometimes when you get changes
[24:40] Speaker 1: like these, it leave us with... With one explanation.
[24:46] Speaker 2: We all got a couple homies like that, man.
[24:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, I can't
[24:51] Speaker 1: say this out loud, right? It's not fair to say
[24:55] Speaker 1: out loud, but that is exactly it. We all got
[24:57] Speaker 1: a couple homies that, I'll give you another example of
[25:01] Speaker 1: this on text. People was like, yo, man, y'all was wrong.
[25:05] Speaker 1: And I'm like, nah, something changed. And I think I
[25:09] Speaker 1: know what it was. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
[25:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes you guys, some of those friends of you
[25:15] Speaker 2: guys say, hey, why don't you put down some of
[25:16] Speaker 2: this drinking and some of this other stuff so we
[25:18] Speaker 2: get this stuff right, you know?
[25:20] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, hey man, let me run something by
[25:23] Speaker 1: you here, you know what I'm saying? But no, that's,
[25:27] Speaker 1: I think the Bengals need to... get back to their roots.
[25:30] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
[25:32] Speaker 2: Little edge. They lost their edge.
[25:34] Speaker 1: That is... They lost their essence. They forgot what they
[25:40] Speaker 1: was in it for. That thing about Mike Brown. Mike Brown,
[25:45] Speaker 1: he got like a Father Flanagan sort of vibe. You
[25:49] Speaker 1: know what I mean? He wants to save the day,
[25:53] Speaker 1: though in real life, everything about him indicates that He
[25:58] Speaker 1: doesn't care about saving these people at all.
[26:00] Speaker 2: At all. They had like a scouting department with like
[26:03] Speaker 2: four people.
[26:04] Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. But also, yeah, but also, Mike
[26:09] Speaker 1: Brown's politics do not imply that he is here in
[26:12] Speaker 1: the name of the betterment of these hardscrabble youths.
[26:16] Speaker 2: I will say, I will say, if you want to
[26:18] Speaker 2: get a good laugh, the website Open Secrets, if you
[26:21] Speaker 2: ever look up Mike Brown and his donations, Boy, he's stingy,
[26:26] Speaker 2: even the people he likes. It's hilarious. Even the people
[26:29] Speaker 2: he likes, it's a drop in the bucket, dog. I
[26:33] Speaker 2: got a good laugh. Go look up Mike Brown's Open Secrets,
[26:35] Speaker 2: Political Nation. It's very funny. He's a penny pitcher, man.
[26:39] Speaker 1: He doesn't give it to anybody.
[26:42] Speaker 2: Anyway, this is a billionaire, dog. A billionaire.
[26:45] Speaker 1: I mean, to be fair, though, he's a billionaire, but
[26:47] Speaker 1: the money is all in the bank.
[26:49] Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right.
[26:51] Speaker 1: That's the one thing I do say is he is
[26:53] Speaker 1: only a billionaire- because he owns the Bengals, right? Like
[26:59] Speaker 1: that's the, that's it. Oh, oh, hold on. He gave, okay,
[27:05] Speaker 1: he gave $ 1, 700 to Lindsey Graham. Hold on, hold on,
[27:08] Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. He gave him, and I don't
[27:10] Speaker 1: know how this works, He gave him $ 5, 000 and that
[27:14] Speaker 1: same day took back $ 1, 700 of it.
[27:18] Speaker 3: Right?
[27:18] Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. He's just like this. He's just
[27:22] Speaker 2: like this. It's not just about you. Yeah, Bengals fans,
[27:27] Speaker 2: don't even take it personally. He's out here, people, he
[27:30] Speaker 2: wants to win elections. He's pulling back donations, you know?
[27:35] Speaker 1: Now, hold on, there's a Mike Brown in Cincinnati who
[27:37] Speaker 1: is listed as not employed, who gave $ 250 to Kamala Harris.
[27:41] Speaker 1: I don't think that that is the same Mike Brown. Nope,
[27:44] Speaker 1: this other one is listed as Cincinnati Bengals. This, by
[27:49] Speaker 1: the way, is why, first of all, I got a
[27:50] Speaker 1: number of reasons I don't give nobody money, but I
[27:52] Speaker 1: know why this has to be public, but I feel
[27:55] Speaker 1: like it shouldn't. Yeah, yeah.
[27:57] Speaker 2: It probably shouldn't be, but it's funny.
[27:59] Speaker 1: No, no, the problem is, like, the people, the type
[28:01] Speaker 1: of people.
[28:02] Speaker 2: It should be, it should be public.
[28:03] Speaker 1: Yeah. My thing is this. The type of people I
[28:05] Speaker 1: would give money to, man, I'd never get a job again.
[28:09] Speaker 1: For somebody to have politics to make me actually give
[28:12] Speaker 1: them money? Man.
[28:16] Speaker 2: That'd be a canceled.
[28:19] Speaker 1: Dick time right now. I ain't giving no money anyway
[28:22] Speaker 1: just because whatever money I give them, it ain't going
[28:24] Speaker 1: to change nothing. I'm not going to give you enough
[28:27] Speaker 1: to get me no sway and therefore I'm not going
[28:30] Speaker 1: to give you enough to change anything that you do.
[28:33] Speaker 1: So you go ahead and you make that happen. I
[28:36] Speaker 1: feel like when you go to the Met now, they
[28:37] Speaker 1: don't charge you. They just let you make a donation.
[28:40] Speaker 1: And the first time I was there, I gave them
[28:42] Speaker 1: the full donation because I feel like I got, you know,
[28:44] Speaker 1: I got it. I'm doing this. Then I stopped and
[28:46] Speaker 1: thought about how much they stole. That's what I'm saying.
[28:49] Speaker 1: I was like, what am I doing?
[28:51] Speaker 2: What am I doing?
[28:53] Speaker 1: This is the last thing I'll say about the Met
[28:55] Speaker 1: before we go to break. I always say about the
[28:56] Speaker 1: Met because if you've never been in the Met, the
[28:59] Speaker 1: Metropolitan Museum, 81st and Fifth Avenue, New York City. The
[29:04] Speaker 1: Met has an incredible Egyptian exhibit. Like it is mind
[29:10] Speaker 1: blowing how dope the Egyptian exhibit is. And it leaves
[29:13] Speaker 1: me at a bit of a dilemma where I'm always like,
[29:15] Speaker 1: it is so terrible that they took this stuff from
[29:19] Speaker 1: the people it belonged to. They could easily give it back,
[29:21] Speaker 1: all this stuff. It is ridiculous. It is just terribly
[29:24] Speaker 1: unfair that it is in this museum. But what is
[29:28] Speaker 1: not terrible is that that museum is a 15 minute
[29:31] Speaker 1: bus ride away from my house. That part is actually
[29:34] Speaker 1: pretty nifty. So I can i can go in there
[29:37] Speaker 1: and give them a piece of my mind and not
[29:40] Speaker 1: pay no donation uh anyway coming up next we're gonna
[29:44] Speaker 1: talk about what's going on with tom brady and the

[32:18] Speaker 1: we are back with Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports. Monday
[32:22] Speaker 1: Night Football, showing Tom Brady in the box with the
[32:26] Speaker 1: headset on, with the coaches for the Raiders. And for
[32:30] Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, Tom Brady owns, I believe, 5%
[32:33] Speaker 1: of the Las Vegas Raiders. And that's actually a little
[32:37] Speaker 1: tricky with his $ 30- something million a year day job, which
[32:41] Speaker 1: is working for Fox, doing football for Fox.
[32:44] Speaker 2: And the reason is.
[32:46] Speaker 1: An advancement of sports broadcasting that John Madden brought in
[32:50] Speaker 1: is that prior to John Madden, the broadcasters would just
[32:52] Speaker 1: show up the day of the game and then go
[32:54] Speaker 1: call them. And then John Madden said, there's no way
[32:56] Speaker 1: that I could properly discuss a team on television without
[33:00] Speaker 1: having seen them practice and without having met with the coaches.
[33:03] Speaker 1: And so the broadcast teams now get time to meet
[33:06] Speaker 1: with the coaches and they like talk about stuff.
[33:09] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
[33:10] Speaker 1: Oh, you know, it's like when the broadcasters are like,
[33:12] Speaker 1: look out for this guy. He was practicing this week.
[33:14] Speaker 1: The coaches like they get information that other people don't
[33:17] Speaker 1: get because it's with the understanding that you're not going
[33:19] Speaker 1: to say anything about it until you get on television. Right.
[33:22] Speaker 1: Like it's a it's a safe space is the way
[33:24] Speaker 1: that we'll put it.
[33:25] Speaker 2: And so there's a lot of stuff, too, you know.
[33:27] Speaker 1: Right. And so Tom Brady last year couldn't go to
[33:29] Speaker 1: those meetings. They couldn't do that stuff because he's the
[33:32] Speaker 1: he is a part owner. And so they changed those
[33:36] Speaker 1: rules a little bit. I don't know exactly how it goes,
[33:39] Speaker 1: but it raised questions when you see Tom Brady with
[33:42] Speaker 1: the headset on that he, through this time and through
[33:47] Speaker 1: doing these games, he will be talking to people who
[33:51] Speaker 1: work for teams that are then going to play for
[33:53] Speaker 1: the Raiders. right? He's going to have access to a
[33:56] Speaker 1: certain intel that it's fair to ask whether or not
[33:59] Speaker 1: he should have it. And so you got a lot
[34:00] Speaker 1: of questions from people who saw him in the box
[34:03] Speaker 1: with the headset during the game about that fact. Charles,
[34:06] Speaker 1: I don't know about you. My question about it was,
[34:09] Speaker 1: how annoyed are you if you were Chip Kelly? Because
[34:12] Speaker 1: that just feels meddlesome.
[34:14] Speaker 2: It does feel meddlesome. But I just don't understand what's
[34:21] Speaker 2: going on here with Tom in general. Like, It just
[34:25] Speaker 2: seems like he's got his hand in so much stuff
[34:27] Speaker 2: right now. And it's funny because you said it seems
[34:31] Speaker 2: complicated when he's got these conflicts of interest, but he
[34:37] Speaker 2: seems to be able to make it very uncomplicated by
[34:40] Speaker 2: just walking into a room and going, I'm Tom Brady.
[34:45] Speaker 2: And that works. And that's about it. Because last year,
[34:49] Speaker 2: he's talking to Ben Johnson when the Raiders are about
[34:52] Speaker 2: to have a head coaching vacancy, and he's broadcasting the game.
[34:57] Speaker 2: I'm like, you can't do that. That's not fair. And
[35:02] Speaker 2: if you read the reporting on The Athletic about their
[35:06] Speaker 2: acquisition of Geno Smith, the Raiders acquisition of Geno Smith,
[35:10] Speaker 2: Todd was very, very involved in that, in helping them
[35:13] Speaker 2: decide that Geno was the quarterback that they should go
[35:15] Speaker 2: after to maximize whatever this Pete Carroll window is going
[35:18] Speaker 2: to be. So You know, this is someone who is
[35:21] Speaker 2: already reported to be very, like, involved in, like, the
[35:23] Speaker 2: big decision-making processes now with the Raiders. And now he's, like,
[35:26] Speaker 2: wearing a headset during a game, and he's going to
[35:28] Speaker 2: go call another game this weekend. But, you know, he
[35:32] Speaker 2: smiles and he shows us seven Super Bowl rings, and
[35:34] Speaker 2: it seems like that seems to win a lot of
[35:35] Speaker 2: decision-makers over as far as allowing him to break the rules.
[35:38] Speaker 2: Because I don't know, like, if Greg Olsen decides to
[35:40] Speaker 2: start doing this, I don't know if it will go
[35:42] Speaker 2: all that well for him. But, you know, for Tom Brady,
[35:45] Speaker 2: it's a charmed life, I'll tell you what.
[35:46] Speaker 1: Oh, cool. First of all, Greg Olson ain't got no
[35:49] Speaker 1: give me get a piece of team money. Let's just
[35:50] Speaker 1: go ahead and throw that out there. If Greg Olson
[35:53] Speaker 1: get that money, it's because he hit the goddamn Powerball,
[35:56] Speaker 1: in which case he ain't going to be announcing no games, right?
[35:58] Speaker 1: Let's start there, okay? Number two, I am amazed at
[36:06] Speaker 1: the way that everybody is bending over backwards to create
[36:10] Speaker 1: a circumstance where Tom Brady can be a mediocre color commentator.
[36:16] Speaker 1: Because at least as of now, he's not especially good
[36:19] Speaker 1: at it. I do think he's good when he goes
[36:22] Speaker 1: on with Colin, right? And he kind of gives his
[36:24] Speaker 1: read on the state of the league or whatever because
[36:26] Speaker 1: he's so passionate about it. I think my criticism of
[36:29] Speaker 1: him as a color commentator is, it's just too important
[36:33] Speaker 1: to him, right? Like it's a game to us. He's
[36:37] Speaker 1: not having any fun at all when he's up there
[36:40] Speaker 1: watching that game and talking about it. Like when Baker
[36:42] Speaker 1: Mayfield made that point, which I thought was a fair one,
[36:45] Speaker 1: that it was a little looser after Tom left Tampa.
[36:47] Speaker 1: Tom was like, I thought the point was to win championships.
[36:51] Speaker 1: I mean, damn. Yeah. I hear you, brother. I do.
[36:54] Speaker 1: But at the same time, you have to like, you
[36:57] Speaker 1: got to understand this. So, so he, he's there for Fox.
[37:01] Speaker 1: They're paying him a zillion dollars. It's not particularly enjoyable
[37:05] Speaker 1: for anybody, especially not Greg Olson. Um, and so they've
[37:11] Speaker 1: been like all these, it's just the idea, I guess,
[37:14] Speaker 1: of being able to say that Tom Brady is on
[37:16] Speaker 1: the broadcast, but, I.
[37:18] Speaker 2: Don't care about that, man.
[37:20] Speaker 1: I don't care about that. No, I don't care about that.
[37:22] Speaker 1: And I want to say this to be fair to
[37:24] Speaker 1: Brady about not being that good at the job that
[37:27] Speaker 1: he has right now. And it's something that I thought
[37:30] Speaker 1: about when I was doing Game Theory for HBO, which
[37:34] Speaker 1: is we did two seasons of Game Theory. We did
[37:38] Speaker 1: 16 episodes. And that meant that I got to do
[37:43] Speaker 1: a television show like that a grand total of 17 times.
[37:46] Speaker 1: Like the only chance that you actually have to practice
[37:50] Speaker 1: is with the whole world watching. And so back in
[37:53] Speaker 1: the day, like take a guy like Phil Sims, for example,
[37:56] Speaker 1: Phil Sims had gotten himself up to the point of
[37:58] Speaker 1: being in the number one broadcast team, but that is
[37:59] Speaker 1: not where he started. He started doing like the one
[38:03] Speaker 1: o'clock kickoffs, just like everybody else. And then gradually, you know,
[38:06] Speaker 1: moved himself up. That's where these cats used to go.
[38:09] Speaker 1: That's not it anymore. Like the dudes that they want,
[38:11] Speaker 1: they walk in and boom, Tony Romo, you starting off
[38:14] Speaker 1: on the number one team. You remember when Jason Witten
[38:17] Speaker 1: was out there? He was so bad, he went and
[38:19] Speaker 1: played football again.
[38:20] Speaker 2: I forgot about that. I totally forgot about that.
[38:26] Speaker 1: And they said he tested really well, but you have
[38:28] Speaker 1: no other opportunity to practice doing that job except in
[38:32] Speaker 1: front of the whole world. And Tom Brady ain't got
[38:34] Speaker 1: no time to be practicing. He's too busy owning a team.
[38:38] Speaker 1: And I would like to say one last thing. I
[38:40] Speaker 1: can only take this to mean he really needs the money.
[38:43] Speaker 2: Yeah. Because why else are you doing all this, man?
[38:49] Speaker 2: Why not just be the owner and just hang out?
[38:52] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[38:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, like, I don't know what decisions he's made with
[38:54] Speaker 1: his money. You know, his old queen, she had all
[38:57] Speaker 1: the dough or whatever. But like, this is, they gave
[39:00] Speaker 1: you 5% of the NFL team, but you can't cash
[39:03] Speaker 1: that check.
[39:04] Speaker 2: But it's a different 5% because Mark Davis is so
[39:08] Speaker 2: tired of making mistakes on his own that Tom gets
[39:10] Speaker 2: to make real decisions. He's playing Madden. He gets to
[39:14] Speaker 2: have a stake in the team without the real financial
[39:17] Speaker 2: risk that someone like Mark Davis would be taking. It's crazy.
[39:23] Speaker 2: But now I feel like I'm getting slapped over the
[39:26] Speaker 2: head with this stuff because why do I need to
[39:27] Speaker 2: know that he's playing flag football saudi arabia like.
[39:30] Speaker 1: What yo what's going on there again this is making
[39:34] Speaker 1: me raise questions all.
[39:36] Speaker 2: Right either he's really that's a good one that's a
[39:38] Speaker 2: good one.
[39:39] Speaker 1: Either he's really greedy or he's got bills, right? And
[39:45] Speaker 1: if you have not seen this, there's going to be
[39:46] Speaker 1: some all-time great flag football league. And by the way,
[39:49] Speaker 1: now that nothing matters in the world anymore and we
[39:51] Speaker 1: don't care about these things, these guys can go over there.
[39:54] Speaker 1: Miles Garrett, Justin Jefferson, a lot of big-time current players.
[39:59] Speaker 1: Rob Gronkowski, who is not a current player, obviously. But
[40:02] Speaker 1: they're going to go over there and play flag football
[40:03] Speaker 1: in Saudi Arabia. And it wasn't that long ago that
[40:06] Speaker 1: we would be up in the grill about doing such
[40:08] Speaker 1: a thing. And we had all these questions about live golf.
[40:11] Speaker 1: Nothing matters anymore. They're going to go play flag football
[40:16] Speaker 1: in Saudi Arabia. And I bet everybody's getting eight figures
[40:19] Speaker 1: for it at least.
[40:21] Speaker 2: And people are going to watch, too. Not me. I'm
[40:24] Speaker 2: staying away from that.
[40:26] Speaker 1: Well, help me with this. If it's flag football, why
[40:29] Speaker 1: we need Miles Garrett? Because he's going over there to play.
[40:34] Speaker 2: You got to ask them. Is Miles Garrett just taking
[40:36] Speaker 2: a check? I don't know.
[40:40] Speaker 1: I don't understand that.
[40:42] Speaker 2: That just doesn't... Now, that's something I might be interested
[40:45] Speaker 2: in watching. Watching Miles Garrett catch a pass against someone,
[40:48] Speaker 2: but only like two plays. You can't be locked in
[40:51] Speaker 2: on that. If it gets on Twitter, I'll watch that then.
[40:55] Speaker 1: That is, I think, as far as I will go
[40:57] Speaker 1: on it. But I was just thinking... there's no way
[41:01] Speaker 1: that Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly want this. Like they're
[41:05] Speaker 1: doing their best job of selling like, yeah, okay, whatever.
[41:08] Speaker 1: But why do you need to be on the headset?
[41:11] Speaker 1: That is the same way I feel about Carly Irsay, Gordon,
[41:16] Speaker 1: who is the new owner of the Colts. He's Jim
[41:21] Speaker 1: Irsay's daughter. Irsay left the team to his three daughters.
[41:23] Speaker 1: She's the one that like calls shots. And, I thought
[41:27] Speaker 1: it was interesting that she said that she wanted to
[41:30] Speaker 1: be on the headset early because she needed to know
[41:33] Speaker 1: what kind of coaches she had, right?
[41:34] Speaker 2: Yeah. That was actually a really interesting interview that she
[41:37] Speaker 2: had about it.
[41:38] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[41:39] Speaker 1: I thought it made sense for a week, though.
[41:41] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[41:42] Speaker 1: It can't be like this all the time.
[41:44] Speaker 2: Right.
[41:46] Speaker 1: That feels meddlesome. If Jerry Jones was on the headset,
[41:51] Speaker 1: on the sideline, talking about, I need to hear what
[41:53] Speaker 1: kind of man my coach is, We would not act
[41:57] Speaker 1: like that was nifty. We would not act like that
[41:59] Speaker 1: was cool.
[42:00] Speaker 2: Because even if you're not saying anything, it's your presence
[42:03] Speaker 2: that is a little bit too much. What's her name again? Carly?
[42:09] Speaker 1: Carly. Yes.
[42:10] Speaker 2: She actually said some cool stuff about how she was
[42:12] Speaker 2: learning a lot about play calls and how they go
[42:16] Speaker 2: in and some of the adjustments that are made on
[42:18] Speaker 2: the fly as play calls come in. But you could
[42:21] Speaker 2: go to a meet and and learn some of that stuff.
[42:23] Speaker 2: You know, you don't have to, you don't have to
[42:25] Speaker 2: sit here on Sunday on the sideline with the headset on,
[42:28] Speaker 2: just kind of walk up to the sidelines, listening to
[42:31] Speaker 2: all the coaches talk. And I'm sure that it's been
[42:33] Speaker 2: enlightening for her and maybe it will help them make,
[42:35] Speaker 2: you know, help her make more decisions in a more
[42:38] Speaker 2: productive manner for, for the organization as things go along here.
[42:42] Speaker 2: But you, you, you could save that for another day.
[42:44] Speaker 2: I don't know. It's just, I don't, I don't know what,
[42:47] Speaker 2: like if you're, if you're Pete Carroll, right. And you
[42:49] Speaker 2: have coached, So many different winning organizations across your time
[42:55] Speaker 2: as a coach. Different teams taking different forms. Why do
[42:58] Speaker 2: I need to listen to Tom Brady? Chip Kelly, he's
[43:02] Speaker 2: gotten to the NFL head coaching ranks, got to UCLA,
[43:06] Speaker 2: had the cachet to say, nope, I'm done with this
[43:08] Speaker 2: head coaching stuff. I'm about to go be the OC
[43:09] Speaker 2: at Ohio State. Why do I need Tom Brady on
[43:12] Speaker 2: the head? What value is he really adding that couldn't
[43:14] Speaker 2: be added on Monday? or two cents.
[43:17] Speaker 1: That's the, that's, I think the point, not that Tom
[43:20] Speaker 1: Brady doesn't have anything to contribute.
[43:23] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[43:23] Speaker 1: But we up here, we up here doing our jobs
[43:26] Speaker 1: right now, bro. Like I take that to mean that
[43:31] Speaker 1: Tom Brady, I feel like he bored. Right. I'll never forget.
[43:38] Speaker 1: When I was in college, I participated on the Honda
[43:41] Speaker 1: campus all-star challenge quiz bowl team. Right. You know, I
[43:46] Speaker 1: was a beast. Anyway, we had won a national championship
[43:50] Speaker 1: of some sorts. And so they honored us at halftime
[43:52] Speaker 1: of a football game, which I will be honest, made
[43:55] Speaker 1: me feel a little bit embarrassed. Right. But people were
[43:58] Speaker 1: very proud of us, apparently like, OK, cool. So I'm
[44:01] Speaker 1: sitting there with a dude that was on the team
[44:02] Speaker 1: with me and he was a dude that was in
[44:05] Speaker 1: the band. But for that semester, for some reason, he
[44:07] Speaker 1: was not participating with the band. And I'll just this
[44:10] Speaker 1: stuck with me forever. Like I actually found this to
[44:12] Speaker 1: be very profound is that I'm next to him. And
[44:15] Speaker 1: he looks at me and he says, this is the
[44:20] Speaker 1: first time that I have ever been at a football
[44:24] Speaker 1: game without an instrument. He had no idea. what to
[44:30] Speaker 1: do with himself if he was at a football game
[44:32] Speaker 1: and he was not playing the xylophone or, you know,
[44:35] Speaker 1: the instrument that he played. Like he had no idea
[44:36] Speaker 1: what to do. And I feel like that must be
[44:38] Speaker 1: Tom Brady, right? Like he's at these games and at
[44:41] Speaker 1: least the microphone gives him something to do. Like I
[44:44] Speaker 1: now imagine that when he's calling these games, like his insides,
[44:48] Speaker 1: it's like the fighting temptations in there. He has no
[44:50] Speaker 1: clue what in the world he's supposed to do at
[44:53] Speaker 1: a football game if he's not actually part of the action.
[44:56] Speaker 1: So now here he is getting in on the headset.
[44:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's kind of like what I don't, I guess
[45:03] Speaker 2: not what I kind of don't like, what I don't
[45:04] Speaker 2: like about Tom as a broadcaster and even like some
[45:08] Speaker 2: other broadcasters where it feels like every play needs to
[45:11] Speaker 2: be like a breakdown of something. Like, hey man, just
[45:14] Speaker 2: keep it moving. Like, I don't mean, you know, you
[45:18] Speaker 2: don't need to draw it up like when it's a
[45:19] Speaker 2: three-yard gain or explain like every little detail of what
[45:21] Speaker 2: happened because sometimes it starts bleeding to the next play
[45:24] Speaker 2: and it just kind of, it's boring to watch. Like,
[45:26] Speaker 2: I remember when When I stopped playing college football and
[45:30] Speaker 2: I started doing media work, I have some of my
[45:32] Speaker 2: friends be like, yo, you watch film for fun? That
[45:35] Speaker 2: used to be the most boring part of all of this.
[45:38] Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I know, I know. It's really not
[45:41] Speaker 2: that interesting, and it's not good on a broadcast either.
[45:45] Speaker 2: Gary Danielson is my favorite broadcaster, has been forever, because
[45:49] Speaker 2: he does such a good job blending. Here's a quick
[45:53] Speaker 2: two-second X and O thing every four plays, but most
[45:55] Speaker 2: of the time I'm here to make a burn chunk.
[45:57] Speaker 2: And that was a great broadcast for me, but some
[45:59] Speaker 2: of it feels too serious now.
[46:01] Speaker 1: Well, so this is what I think. I'm curious what
[46:04] Speaker 1: you think about the distinction I'm going to try to make.
[46:07] Speaker 1: There is a difference between teaching and explaining, right?
[46:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[46:13] Speaker 1: And so what you're talking about, and I do think
[46:16] Speaker 1: I see this from a lot of guys, they use
[46:18] Speaker 1: a little bit too much jargon, right? Oh, man, we
[46:20] Speaker 1: got a three-man shell here. It's a two-eye save.
[46:22] Speaker 2: Look, I— I like Dan and Lou, Lou Riddick and Olasky.
[46:27] Speaker 2: I like their work, but last night.
[46:28] Speaker 1: I'm like, whoa, boy, you're bringing out the jargon. Yeah, yeah,
[46:32] Speaker 1: they were doing a little too much, but I mean...
[46:35] Speaker 1: The God MC is John Madden, right? Yes. And for
[46:38] Speaker 1: the people who were too young to get anything close
[46:40] Speaker 1: to prime John Madden, even non-prime John Madden was it,
[46:43] Speaker 1: but that is the God MC of doing this. And
[46:46] Speaker 1: the thing that made Madden so good, you have to remember,
[46:48] Speaker 1: is that Madden derives from a time where the archetype
[46:51] Speaker 1: of a coach was not so much a CEO, but
[46:54] Speaker 1: was an actual factual teacher, right? And so John Madden
[46:58] Speaker 1: felt like a teacher at your school. And when he
[47:00] Speaker 1: did get in to explain, he had the clicker and
[47:02] Speaker 1: everything else, He wasn't saying what happened. He was showing you, hey,
[47:08] Speaker 1: cool thing about football. This is a zone dog. This
[47:11] Speaker 1: is what you do on a zone dog. Now watch
[47:15] Speaker 1: the zone dog. And be like, oh, okay. I get
[47:19] Speaker 1: where you're coming from, right? Like, I think that's the
[47:22] Speaker 1: key is you need to be, you need to know
[47:25] Speaker 1: how to teach your audience. And in a way, people
[47:30] Speaker 1: only care if you know more than them, if you're
[47:32] Speaker 1: willing to share.
[47:34] Speaker 3: Right?
[47:34] Speaker 2: Yes.
[47:35] Speaker 1: If you're not sharing, they resent you. But if you're
[47:38] Speaker 1: making it something we can all participate in, it's like, yo,
[47:42] Speaker 1: I got more food than I know what to do with.
[47:43] Speaker 1: Everybody likes that guy. You know what I'm saying? But
[47:46] Speaker 1: they just over there watching you eat? Nobody likes that guy.
[47:50] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[47:50] Speaker 2: Well, see, that's why, like, I used... A lot of
[47:52] Speaker 2: people used to tell me I was crazy back in
[47:54] Speaker 2: the day when I said, like, Gary Danielson, I will
[47:58] Speaker 2: watch any game that he broadcasts. And people are like, oh,
[48:00] Speaker 2: you know, but he's kind of slow. Like, no, if
[48:03] Speaker 2: you listen... you will learn so much about like playing
[48:07] Speaker 2: quarterback when Gary's on there, because it's not, it's not
[48:10] Speaker 2: an overflow of information, but he'll like over the course
[48:13] Speaker 2: of a game, he'd be like, Oh, you know, so
[48:14] Speaker 2: they were running this coverage earlier and bang, now they
[48:16] Speaker 2: can run a switch up, switch up route here. And
[48:18] Speaker 2: they got loose for a touchdown. And then he, but
[48:20] Speaker 2: he keeps it lighthearted too. And he keeps it moving along.
[48:22] Speaker 2: Like that's kind of what we need to get back to.
[48:24] Speaker 2: Cause I do feel like football coverage in general has
[48:26] Speaker 2: gotten very serious sometimes. Like, and I like the data
[48:30] Speaker 2: and the numbers and stuff like that. Like I use
[48:32] Speaker 2: a lot in my work, but, You know, it's still
[48:36] Speaker 2: a game. You know, you should be able to have
[48:37] Speaker 2: a little bit of fun and laugh at what's going
[48:40] Speaker 2: on without every play or every drive or every game.
[48:43] Speaker 2: It's some referendum on the end of the world. Like
[48:45] Speaker 2: some of the stuff I'm seeing two weeks into the season. Like, bro,
[48:49] Speaker 2: y'all need to take a damn breath. Like, yeah, we
[48:51] Speaker 2: got 15 weeks to go.
[48:53] Speaker 1: Yeah. Sports broadcast in general, but football broadcast in particular.
[48:57] Speaker 1: I really just want to watch this game. I don't
[48:58] Speaker 1: need that much data. Like I think in a number
[49:02] Speaker 1: of ways, we are really overrun with data. It's data
[49:06] Speaker 1: all over the screen. You got a ticker at the bottom,
[49:09] Speaker 1: depending upon what network you're watching. I don't need, and
[49:12] Speaker 1: I get why they do it, but the game does
[49:16] Speaker 1: then often feel secondary, and then as the game, is
[49:20] Speaker 1: going on, I don't, I don't watch football or enjoy
[49:25] Speaker 1: it as a puzzle to be solved. Though I am
[49:28] Speaker 1: often intrigued by how the puzzle works. I don't like,
[49:32] Speaker 1: that's not why I'm watching it. I'm watching it for
[49:34] Speaker 1: a good time. I want to throw something at you
[49:36] Speaker 1: right fast as you are an Atlanta Falcons fan. Like
[49:39] Speaker 1: you still do that. It's wild. And you know, I
[49:43] Speaker 1: want to give you proof that some places they'll love
[49:46] Speaker 1: you forever. Um, on three sports is reporting that Virginia tech, um.
[49:54] Speaker 2: Oh, no.
[49:55] Speaker 1: They just fired their head coach after losing to Georgia Tech.
[50:00] Speaker 1: But it says here, sources have told all three sports
[50:02] Speaker 1: that some Virginia Tech boosters push Vic to get coaching experience.
[50:05] Speaker 1: It would not surprise anybody in the industry if Vic
[50:07] Speaker 1: is a serious name at Virginia Tech and future coaching searches.
[50:10] Speaker 1: First of all, future coaching searches says a lot about
[50:13] Speaker 1: what you think. It says a lot about what you
[50:16] Speaker 1: think about the future of this program.
[50:18] Speaker 2: What future?
[50:20] Speaker 1: I guess for Vic, going back to Virginia Tech, that's
[50:23] Speaker 1: kind of like Barry Bonds in San Francisco, right? It
[50:25] Speaker 1: don't matter what you do, baby. It don't matter what
[50:27] Speaker 1: they say about you.
[50:29] Speaker 2: I actually did get into this last week. And the
[50:32] Speaker 2: first thing I thought was, Mike, you don't want to
[50:35] Speaker 2: be the coach that takes this job right now. Take
[50:38] Speaker 2: it after the next guy gets fired. You know, because
[50:41] Speaker 2: this dude, I'm an East Coaster through and through all
[50:46] Speaker 2: my life. Like this East Coast football shit, that's what
[50:49] Speaker 2: I know. Virginia Tech, like, I tell, like, my little
[50:52] Speaker 2: brother and his friends, like, yo, like, this used to
[50:54] Speaker 2: be a real deal college football program. Like, churning out
[50:58] Speaker 2: dudes to the NFL on a year-by-year basis. Like, you
[51:02] Speaker 2: go look up some of those guys, play Virginia Tech from, like, 2000,
[51:05] Speaker 2: or not even 2000. Like, let's call it, like, 1995 to, like, 2012. Like,
[51:10] Speaker 2: that stretch, they put a lot of dudes in the NFL.
[51:13] Speaker 2: And now it's nothing. Like, they stink. They lost to
[51:17] Speaker 2: South Carolina. They're trying to get this transfer stuff going.
[51:20] Speaker 2: So you fire your coach now. This next year ain't
[51:22] Speaker 2: going to be much better. So, yeah, go see if
[51:24] Speaker 2: you can build Norfolk State a little bit. Get some
[51:26] Speaker 2: wins and then maybe go to there.
[51:28] Speaker 1: I would get my practice up and then maybe look
[51:30] Speaker 1: at that job. But I think the expectation is that. OK,
[51:35] Speaker 1: so I think that this is a college football thing
[51:37] Speaker 1: that I would love to see studied a little more.
[51:39] Speaker 1: If somebody could figure out a way to do something
[51:41] Speaker 1: with the data and they do some data on this.
[51:44] Speaker 1: But there are very few fertile recruiting areas that are
[51:48] Speaker 1: truly no man's land. And the Tidewater is one of them.
[51:51] Speaker 1: It's not close to any big school. Like for the longest,
[51:55] Speaker 1: it's no longer the case because like Old Dominion, these
[51:57] Speaker 1: schools have jumped up. But for the longest, the closest
[52:00] Speaker 1: FBS school to the Tidewater was East Carolina. Neither of
[52:04] Speaker 1: the like neither of the Virginia schools are actually geographically
[52:07] Speaker 1: close to the Tidewater. And so when Virginia Tech was
[52:12] Speaker 1: running things is because they were the ones that got
[52:14] Speaker 1: the players out of the Tidewater. When Mack Brown was
[52:17] Speaker 1: winning at North Carolina, he was getting dudes out of Tidewater.
[52:21] Speaker 1: Like whoever gets that all of a sudden has this
[52:23] Speaker 1: spike in their fortune. So my guess is that Virginia
[52:26] Speaker 1: Tech looks at it. Mike will walk out every player
[52:29] Speaker 1: that he wants out of there. We get our money up, right?
[52:32] Speaker 1: Mike can go down there and then Mike can get
[52:34] Speaker 1: the players and then we'll be okay. And I hear you.
[52:40] Speaker 1: I'm just going to warn Mike about this because I
[52:42] Speaker 1: see what might happen here. OK, because, you know, Eddie
[52:45] Speaker 1: George is working at Tennessee State. Now he went and
[52:47] Speaker 1: took a job at Bowling Green.
[52:48] Speaker 2: Hey, Eddie might got this, man. He's pretty good.
[52:51] Speaker 1: He's good. He seems to be good. And the difference
[52:53] Speaker 1: between Tennessee State and the other black college jobs is
[52:57] Speaker 1: they're playing FCS. But I guess now other schools have
[52:59] Speaker 1: made this move, but they're playing FCS. um, at a
[53:02] Speaker 1: higher level, they were not playing in the swagger me act.
[53:04] Speaker 1: Like they were going against schools with a lot of
[53:06] Speaker 1: financial advantages over them and everything else. And he parlayed
[53:09] Speaker 1: that in the bowling green job. Um, I talked to
[53:11] Speaker 1: Eddie at the super bowl and he was like, look, man,
[53:14] Speaker 1: working here is a different kind of job, man. Like
[53:16] Speaker 1: this ain't Ohio state. He understood it, but he seemed to,
[53:19] Speaker 1: he seemed to understand what it was. He's also not
[53:22] Speaker 1: there anymore. Right. I don't know why he's not there anymore,
[53:25] Speaker 1: but he's not there anymore. I'm saying all that to say,
[53:28] Speaker 1: They're going to drive Mike a little bit crazy over
[53:30] Speaker 1: there at Norfolk State. I understand that. Like, if Deion
[53:32] Speaker 1: had left Jackson State and not been a jerk about it,
[53:35] Speaker 1: I wouldn't have said nothing. I know that they was
[53:37] Speaker 1: on some bullshit.
[53:39] Speaker 4: I don't know exactly what the bullshit was, but I
[53:41] Speaker 4: know it was some.
[53:42] Speaker 1: I understand you. And I'm just saying, Mike, don't let
[53:46] Speaker 1: the bullshit run you out before you get all the
[53:48] Speaker 1: game you need. You know what I'm saying?
[53:52] Speaker 2: Hey, it's a marathon. It's a marathon.
[53:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, I'm telling you. Like, I know.
[53:56] Speaker 2: Let's just stack some wins.
[53:57] Speaker 1: I know they're going to be doing stuff down there.
[53:59] Speaker 1: You're not going to believe it. I understand that.
[54:01] Speaker 4: You might have to wash the clothes yourself.
[54:03] Speaker 1: I get that, too. But don't go too soon. Get
[54:07] Speaker 1: your game up. Then make the move.
[54:10] Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, I did not think that I was going
[54:12] Speaker 2: to hear a Tidewater reference on this podcast today. Someone...
[54:16] Speaker 2: Spent most of my life flipping between Maryland and North Carolina.
[54:19] Speaker 2: Got to tickle me a little bit. But, bro, it's
[54:21] Speaker 2: hard getting around out there. It's hard getting around out there.
[54:25] Speaker 2: There ain't shit. Like, I remember we were going to,
[54:29] Speaker 2: for my mom's birthday a couple years ago, we went
[54:31] Speaker 2: out to the Outer Banks for a couple days with
[54:34] Speaker 2: some family and friends. And my girlfriend, she was like, oh,
[54:36] Speaker 2: you know, I want to come down. I was thinking
[54:38] Speaker 2: about flying from New York. I'm like, just don't. Don't bother.
[54:42] Speaker 2: Because what I'm not about to do is go drive
[54:44] Speaker 2: an hour and a half one way to Virginia to
[54:47] Speaker 2: go pick your ass up and then drive an hour
[54:49] Speaker 2: and a half back just for two days. I'll tell you,
[54:51] Speaker 2: I couldn't make it. But it's really like that out there.
[54:53] Speaker 2: So if you can get them to come to you
[54:55] Speaker 2: instead of having to go to them. That'd be ideal.
[54:58] Speaker 1: The last thing we'll do here, I think you did
[55:01] Speaker 1: this on your podcast, so we can offer this up
[55:03] Speaker 1: on our podcast. And I don't know why this tickled
[55:05] Speaker 1: me so much, but tell the people what you thought
[55:07] Speaker 1: was going to happen after Michael Vick got arrested.
[55:11] Speaker 2: Oh, man. I thought that they were going to draft
[55:16] Speaker 2: Darren McFadden and hold down the fort until Mike Vick
[55:18] Speaker 2: got out of jail. But to be fair, I was
[55:22] Speaker 2: like 13 years. It was 2007, man. I was dumb
[55:25] Speaker 2: as hell. When that Matt Ryan pick came through, my
[55:30] Speaker 2: jaw dropped. I was like, what the hell? You guys
[55:34] Speaker 2: replaced Michael Vick that fast? And then Matt Ryan threw
[55:37] Speaker 2: a 64-yard touchdown pass on his first play, so things
[55:39] Speaker 2: were okay. You thought they were going to run it back.
[55:42] Speaker 2: I thought they were going to hold it down the
[55:44] Speaker 2: floor for him and keep the spot warm until he
[55:46] Speaker 2: got back. I had no idea how anything worked back then.
[55:51] Speaker 1: I don't know why that was so funny to me.
[55:53] Speaker 1: The way you said it the first time, he's like, Mike,
[55:55] Speaker 1: get out of jail.
[55:56] Speaker 2: We're just going to run it back. We got Darren McFadden.
[56:00] Speaker 2: He's going to be the next Adrian Peterson. Offensive line's
[56:03] Speaker 2: still pretty good. We're going to run for 4,000 yards
[56:05] Speaker 2: a year and maybe get to the Super Bowl.
[56:08] Speaker 1: You just treated it like Mike got hurt.
[56:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. That's kind of what it was.
[56:14] Speaker 1: You thought it was like back in the day Mike
[56:15] Speaker 1: went to fight in Korea and was just going to
[56:18] Speaker 1: come back after putting in his time and just get
[56:21] Speaker 1: back out there on the field.
[56:22] Speaker 2: Two years in federal prison might be a little bit
[56:24] Speaker 2: harder than Korea.
[56:27] Speaker 1: It's fair. It's fair. Man, they had that boy wearing
[56:32] Speaker 1: actual fascial stripes.
[56:34] Speaker 2: Yeah. He was in.
[56:38] Speaker 1: He was in jail for real. I will say this
[56:40] Speaker 1: about Darren McFadden right fast. You know, I have to
[56:43] Speaker 1: remember now that the years are passing. We're not at
[56:46] Speaker 1: the point where Darren McFadden is a guy that it
[56:48] Speaker 1: feels like there aren't that many of them left anymore
[56:50] Speaker 1: because the forecasting game has gotten so different. But hey, man.
[56:55] Speaker 1: There's some of y'all who of a certain age that
[56:57] Speaker 1: you do not understand that that was a stone cold monster.
[57:04] Speaker 1: My goodness.
[57:05] Speaker 2: That backfield. They had Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis too.
[57:08] Speaker 2: That was crazy, man. Crazy. The hype was crazy.
[57:16] Speaker 1: Tim Tebow should have been a zero-time Heisman Trophy winner
[57:19] Speaker 1: because after Arkansas won that game against the eventual national
[57:24] Speaker 1: champions who Darren McFadden ran for 200-something yards on a
[57:26] Speaker 1: rivalry weekend, there's your Heisman Trophy winner right there. Sorry, guys.
[57:32] Speaker 1: He was the runner-up the year before. He should have
[57:35] Speaker 1: got that Heisman that year. Absolutely should have.
[57:41] Speaker 2: One of the things that I remember from that year
[57:43] Speaker 2: was that was– I think that was the same season
[57:47] Speaker 2: when Ronnie Brown with the Dolphins, like the Wildcat formation.
[57:51] Speaker 1: It was the year before Ronnie got on it. McFadden
[57:53] Speaker 1: was on it first. Right, right.
[57:55] Speaker 2: Because I couldn't remember if they happened at the same time.
[57:57] Speaker 2: But that is just such a simple but genius idea.
[58:02] Speaker 2: Why am I handing it up? Why am I handing
[58:03] Speaker 2: it to the quarterback? Just give it to Darren right
[58:04] Speaker 2: off the bat and let him go run.
[58:06] Speaker 1: Yeah. And the thing with him was, the thing is,
[58:08] Speaker 1: he was a high school quarterback. So there was a
[58:11] Speaker 1: minimal threat. that he might be able to do something.
[58:15] Speaker 1: That boy was cold. Boy, I also remember he's the
[58:18] Speaker 1: last guy that I remember where negative on his draft
[58:21] Speaker 1: stock was all these damn kids. That was the concern.
[58:26] Speaker 1: And I also remember my buddy Chris Carter. Chris Carter
[58:29] Speaker 1: was doing ESPN one day. He's like, no, you got
[58:31] Speaker 1: to understand. If you take Darren, he come to your team,
[58:34] Speaker 1: Little Rock.
[58:35] Speaker 2: Is coming with him. Oh, shit. The entire town. Entire city.
[58:46] Speaker 1: The entire town is coming with him. And they all kid. But, oh, man,
[58:50] Speaker 1: he was a beast. Like, maybe I need to figure
[58:52] Speaker 1: out a way we can come up with that series.
[58:54] Speaker 1: Just college beasts. Like, there's something special about a college beast.
[58:59] Speaker 1: That was just like, no, no, no, boys. Sometimes the
[59:02] Speaker 1: college beast wasn't even like an All-America beast. Like, we
[59:04] Speaker 1: talked about Greg Jones the other day at Florida State.
[59:06] Speaker 1: College beast.
[59:07] Speaker 2: Yep.
[59:08] Speaker 1: Flat-out college beast.
[59:10] Speaker 2: Yeah. DJ Shockley, he's still good with Georgia fans to
[59:13] Speaker 2: this day, man. Not the best quarterback they've had since then, but, man,
[59:18] Speaker 2: just held down.
[59:20] Speaker 1: Somehow, the last black starting quarterback at the University of Georgia. Yeah.
[59:29] Speaker 1: Dan Newton. Deshaun Watson? No, no, no. We don't really
[59:32] Speaker 1: have a place for you guys to play quarterback. They
[59:35] Speaker 1: had a place for him just behind Jake Fromm.
[59:38] Speaker 2: They had this kid after Fields left. Right before Fields
[59:42] Speaker 2: and right after Fields. He was a backup. His name
[59:44] Speaker 2: was DeJuan Mathis and Yes. That's one of those guys
[59:46] Speaker 2: you can't even lie to yourself about. You try to
[59:52] Speaker 2: clean up some of the language around black quarterbacks, and
[59:54] Speaker 2: you watch someone like, man, man.
[59:57] Speaker 1: He was on tilt. He was on tilt. He was
[1:00:00] Speaker 1: out there like, I don't quite know what to do.
[1:00:04] Speaker 1: He was a worse version of this, but when Jalen
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: Milrow was so mad because Bill O'Brien said he was
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: a running back and not a quarterback, and I was like, yeah,
[1:00:14] Speaker 1: that was... messed up. Not that I've ever said that
[1:00:20] Speaker 1: exact same thing. But it's because you're so good at running. Yeah.
[1:00:31] Speaker 1: That's what happened.
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: What the hell were we talking about today? I don't
[1:00:34] Speaker 2: even remember how we got here.
[1:00:36] Speaker 1: We got here because you thought that Michael Vick was
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: going to come back out of jail to play with
[1:00:40] Speaker 1: Darren McFadden. And then Darren McFadden got us to... Actually,
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: now I don't even know. But I do know that
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: your name is Charles McDonald. And you can check him out. Also,
[1:00:51] Speaker 1: with our other friend of the program, Nate Tice, on
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: Football 301, podcast for Yahoo Sports. My brother, I appreciate
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: you joining us here.
[1:00:58] Speaker 2: Absolutely, absolutely. I actually got one more little Raiders thing
[1:01:02] Speaker 2: from that era.
[1:01:03] Speaker 3: Yes.
[1:01:03] Speaker 2: The most famous football player from my high school is
[1:01:06] Speaker 2: Darius Hayward-Bey. And he used to come back during some
[1:01:12] Speaker 2: of the summer workouts, and I got to say, he
[1:01:14] Speaker 2: was not the nicest guy to us. He was very passionate,
[1:01:17] Speaker 2: very passionate about our high school football team, but he
[1:01:19] Speaker 2: was not the nicest guy. So when we started dropping passes,
[1:01:23] Speaker 2: we did keep track of them one season. Yeah, because...
[1:01:27] Speaker 2: kept track. It was very funny.
[1:01:29] Speaker 1: I need to ask Dominique. No, Dominique did not play
[1:01:33] Speaker 1: with Darius Hayward-Bey. Oh, that's unfortunate. I would have been
[1:01:37] Speaker 1: curious to know what Dominique had to say about him.
[1:01:41] Speaker 2: Damn.
[1:01:42] Speaker 1: But my brother, I appreciate you. And ladies and gentlemen,
[1:01:44] Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us here on The Right Time.
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: We do this here three times a week. Ryan Brumley
