Bomani Jones is joined by Dominique Foxworth for another episode of The Right Time, and they start with the massive NBA Finals ratings after the Knicks’ championship run. Bomani and Dominique discuss why New York’s title felt so big, how Jalen Brunson became a permanent New York legend, and why the biggest winner of the Knicks’ championship might actually be James Dolan. Then, Bomani and Dominique get into the backlash around Victor Wembanyama after the Finals. Was Wemby really a “villain,” or are fans just looking for the next superstar to tear down? They break down the criticism of his physicality, the handshake discourse, and why the reaction to Wemby says a lot about how we talk about young stars. Plus, Bomani shares what it was like watching Senegal vs. France in Harlem during the World Cup, the energy around soccer in New York City, and why the World Cup hits differently depending on which neighborhood you’re in. [0:21] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:24] Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
[0:26] Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Check him out on the
[0:29] Speaker 1: Dominique Foxworth show.
[0:31] Speaker 2: Charlie Kravitz.
[0:33] Speaker 1: Donnie Fossberg, what's going on?
[0:35] Speaker 2: Not much. You did have Charlie on at some point.
[0:37] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[0:38] Speaker 3: He hasn't accepted that he is like a personality now.
[0:42] Speaker 3: Like he thinks he's a producer who just helps me
[0:44] Speaker 3: out with the co-hosting.
[0:46] Speaker 2: But like people care about what he got to say.
[0:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's why I can't have him on because
[0:51] Speaker 1: he'll be another person on the list that me and
[0:53] Speaker 1: Ryan talk about. People who try to produce my goddamn show.
[0:57] Speaker 1: While my show was going on, right? The cats would
[0:59] Speaker 1: be like, all right, I know we're going to get
[1:00] Speaker 1: to this later, but hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. If
[1:04] Speaker 1: you got to say but, you need to not do this.
[1:07] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? We can't have two people
[1:09] Speaker 1: drive Mr. Jesse Rob in this track.
[1:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't need my hands on the steering wheel.
[1:15] Speaker 2: I'm along for the ride. Yeah, yeah.
[1:17] Speaker 1: Nah, man, it's been a lot here going on. We're
[1:20] Speaker 1: going to talk a little bit about the soccer ball.
[1:23] Speaker 1: We might get to Brendan Sorsby. Cats out here passing
[1:25] Speaker 1: bad checks. But actually, I just saw a number, and
[1:29] Speaker 1: I have not warned you about this at all, but
[1:31] Speaker 1: I never do, so it's okay. The numbers are in,
[1:35] Speaker 1: at least the numbers they've given us, and they're telling
[1:37] Speaker 1: us that these were the most watched NBA finals since 1998,
[1:40] Speaker 1: and that Game 5 peaked at 33 million viewers. Now,
[1:46] Speaker 1: I don't know what exactly viewer means, right? I don't
[1:49] Speaker 1: know exactly how they compiled these statistics because they've done
[1:51] Speaker 1: a lot of changes that have affected this, but isn't
[1:55] Speaker 1: it amazing? how the biggest city in America gets into
[1:59] Speaker 1: the NBA finals and suddenly everything feels like it's back
[2:04] Speaker 1: or at least that's the story and it becomes your
[2:07] Speaker 1: friendly reminder. You know something that was going on when
[2:10] Speaker 1: the Bulls were killing it? The third largest city in
[2:13] Speaker 1: America had the best basketball team. And then you know
[2:16] Speaker 1: what happened after that? The second largest city in America
[2:20] Speaker 1: had the best basketball team. You know what hasn't happened
[2:23] Speaker 1: in 50 years? the biggest city in America had the
[2:27] Speaker 1: basketball team.
[2:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[2:29] Speaker 3: I mean, and the Knicks, I mean, the Bulls going
[2:33] Speaker 3: through the Knicks, I imagine those were pretty popular series
[2:35] Speaker 3: back in the day. I think you're probably right about
[2:38] Speaker 3: the way we're calculating these things, but it doesn't really matter.
[2:41] Speaker 2: We know this was fucking huge. We all know it
[2:44] Speaker 2: was huge. We experienced it. It was incredible.
[2:46] Speaker 3: It felt like 2016, I guess, like those LeBron and...
[2:52] Speaker 3: Golden State series those felt like huge in this way
[2:55] Speaker 3: where everyone had to be there but this to me
[2:57] Speaker 3: honestly felt a little bigger and it was pretty cool
[3:00] Speaker 3: the way that it was kind of a vibe shift
[3:03] Speaker 3: around the NBA it felt like a lot of us
[3:04] Speaker 3: were down on the NBA and the fouls and all
[3:07] Speaker 3: that stuff and then The finals happened.
[3:09] Speaker 2: We all forgot. He just fell in love again.
[3:11] Speaker 1: So I think a few things happened because it's difficult
[3:13] Speaker 1: for me to gauge the magnitude of these finals because
[3:17] Speaker 1: I'm in the middle of it.
[3:19] Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
[3:19] Speaker 1: Like I don't, I don't know what it would have
[3:22] Speaker 1: had to happen for the Knicks to be this far.
[3:24] Speaker 1: It did not seem like the biggest thing that had
[3:26] Speaker 1: ever happened in the history of mankind.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Right.
[3:28] Speaker 1: Because I am in the epicenter of the people who
[3:31] Speaker 1: care the most.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[3:32] Speaker 1: 100% about this. But. Playoff basketball, I would say, felt
[3:38] Speaker 1: like a return to what a lot of people say
[3:42] Speaker 1: they wanted, which is a bit more physicality to start, right? Now,
[3:45] Speaker 1: it wasn't the brand of physicality that I want. I
[3:48] Speaker 1: want hard fouls. I just don't, I don't want people
[3:51] Speaker 1: simply mucking it up, right? Like make it a little difficult, okay? No,
[3:55] Speaker 1: I want people to be scared, right? I want people
[3:57] Speaker 1: shooting mid-range jump shots because what's waiting on you in
[4:00] Speaker 1: there is a clothesline. That's part of why the mid-range
[4:04] Speaker 1: jumper went away is because it's a little too safe
[4:08] Speaker 1: down there in the paint. But when it was rough, rugged,
[4:10] Speaker 1: and raw, Katz was like, oh, let me stop right here.
[4:13] Speaker 1: Get this J as I can get it, right?
[4:15] Speaker 2: They don't, yeah.
[4:16] Speaker 3: I mean, they are pretty, like, loosey-goosey with the flagrers.
[4:20] Speaker 3: They don't want that back. But they let you grab
[4:23] Speaker 3: and push. They let you do all types of stuff.
[4:24] Speaker 3: And I know Wimby got away with a head mush
[4:27] Speaker 3: and some stuff like that. But generally, the stuff that
[4:30] Speaker 3: they think is going to lead to a fight, They
[4:32] Speaker 3: ain't got time for that.
[4:33] Speaker 1: But these boys ain't going to fight. That's the other part, too. Like,
[4:35] Speaker 1: you need to recognize that we got to, you know,
[4:37] Speaker 1: these boys too scared to fight now. We got a
[4:39] Speaker 1: long way to go before anybody actually starts fighting.
[4:42] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[4:43] Speaker 3: I mean, I guess I would say that they, the
[4:46] Speaker 3: reason why they don't fight is because the NBA has
[4:49] Speaker 3: handled the business the way they handle it. You think
[4:52] Speaker 3: that they wouldn't actually fight? I think they make the
[4:54] Speaker 3: decision not to fight.
[4:55] Speaker 1: I'm saying that they have legislated fighting out so much
[4:57] Speaker 1: that these dudes are conditioned not to fight, that there
[4:59] Speaker 1: will be a lag. before they actually get to the
[5:03] Speaker 1: point that they're going to be out here. We got
[5:05] Speaker 1: a little while that you can allow this to happen.
[5:09] Speaker 1: And I can tell you, these boys probably can't fight,
[5:11] Speaker 1: so ain't nobody really going to get hurt. I forget
[5:14] Speaker 1: what series that was. Maurice Lucas got into a fight
[5:16] Speaker 1: with somebody way back in the day. And it reminded
[5:19] Speaker 1: you it was a different time because them cats just
[5:22] Speaker 1: looked at each other. And this is back when everybody's
[5:24] Speaker 1: daddy went to the army. So they just looked at
[5:26] Speaker 1: each other and they squared up like they was in.
[5:28] Speaker 1: They put up their dukes because don't nobody put up
[5:31] Speaker 1: their dukes no more, right? They had their dukes up
[5:34] Speaker 1: and they was ready to go because everybody had like
[5:36] Speaker 1: a standard fighting technique that your daddy had taught you.
[5:39] Speaker 1: And now at this point, that's not really like what...
[5:43] Speaker 1: That's not what they do.
[5:44] Speaker 3: Do daddies still do that? Because like my dad definitely
[5:47] Speaker 3: taught me how to throw a punch. Yeah.
[5:49] Speaker 2: And I mean... I mean, you a daddy?
[5:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, I taught my son and my daughters how to
[5:54] Speaker 3: ball up your fist. Like, just important to know, don't
[5:57] Speaker 3: put your thumb in. Like, I feel like this happened
[5:59] Speaker 3: with both my daughters is they put their thumb in.
[6:01] Speaker 3: They're like, nah, I hope you never have to throw
[6:03] Speaker 3: a punch. You probably will never have to throw a punch, but, like,
[6:07] Speaker 3: if it happened, I'm going to need you to be able, like,
[6:08] Speaker 3: it feels like something, like, fundamental about being a person
[6:13] Speaker 3: is you have to be able to do that.
[6:14] Speaker 2: And I never been in, like, it feels like, women
[6:17] Speaker 2: fights involve the hair. It's a strategic thing that I
[6:21] Speaker 2: don't know how to advise for that. Cause I ain't
[6:22] Speaker 2: never been in one.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Well, as David way, it's at that routine, right? Where
[6:26] Speaker 1: you talked about how big fight to look good girls
[6:29] Speaker 1: fight to win. Right. And so he said he fought
[6:32] Speaker 1: this girl and he was in what grade or whatever.
[6:34] Speaker 1: And he was out here doing his Muhammad Ali or whatever.
[6:36] Speaker 2: Do, do, do.
[6:37] Speaker 1: And she came in with the windmill. Oh, and it
[6:40] Speaker 1: was just like, hey, hey, hey, hey, there's nothing to
[6:42] Speaker 1: be done. Now, stakes are way higher with women fight
[6:46] Speaker 1: because also like how women look in the fight is
[6:49] Speaker 1: much less of a discussion. There's much less of an
[6:51] Speaker 1: evaluation of technique by the onlookers and discussions about whether
[6:55] Speaker 1: or not you had done this very often.
[6:57] Speaker 2: I never considered that, but you're right.
[6:59] Speaker 3: You could win a fight as a man, but if
[7:02] Speaker 3: you like kicking and doing some cap cap aware, like.
[7:05] Speaker 2: People that you better do it right. It's like shooting
[7:08] Speaker 2: underhand free throws. I don't care if you 90%. I
[7:10] Speaker 2: ain't shooting them like that. I'd rather lose.
[7:14] Speaker 3: I'd rather shoot 75% than be out here trying to
[7:17] Speaker 3: try to karate kick.
[7:18] Speaker 1: That's right. That, that, that is what gets them. But
[7:21] Speaker 1: I would say something else. Another thing I think was
[7:23] Speaker 1: important about these finals in terms of like generating interest, um,
[7:27] Speaker 1: We had an actual factual star. Yeah. Right? Now, it's
[7:31] Speaker 1: interesting kind of the Victor Wynn-Banyama backlash that has become,
[7:36] Speaker 1: which I really think is in large part a social
[7:39] Speaker 1: media phenomenon because... It's lather, rinse, repeat on how these
[7:46] Speaker 1: things go, right? Like somebody lost, that means they are whack, terrible,
[7:50] Speaker 1: whatever it is, da-da-da, you know, and everything goes. Look,
[7:53] Speaker 1: the Spurs messed up and they built a team that
[7:55] Speaker 1: did not have anybody to be any sort of enforcer.
[7:58] Speaker 1: And so this dude had to go out here and
[8:00] Speaker 1: enforce for himself. And I don't have nearly the problem
[8:03] Speaker 1: with it. But I did not come away from this.
[8:05] Speaker 1: People talk about him like he Rick Mahor coming out
[8:07] Speaker 1: of this series. And I was just like, do you
[8:09] Speaker 1: really think this has been that dirty or has everything
[8:11] Speaker 1: been watered down to a place that this this is
[8:14] Speaker 1: the guy that you think is that dude?
[8:17] Speaker 2: We are on the same damn page, man.
[8:19] Speaker 3: And I I venture to say not only did I
[8:22] Speaker 3: not have a problem with it.
[8:26] Speaker 2: I gotta fuck with it.
[8:31] Speaker 3: I didn't like him pushing Jalen Brunson in the head,
[8:34] Speaker 3: but the way that I saw it was, all right,
[8:38] Speaker 3: I'm going to complain to the refs, which he did.
[8:39] Speaker 3: I'm going to throw my arms up because they was
[8:41] Speaker 3: grabbing him. They was fouling him up. They was doing
[8:42] Speaker 3: all types of stuff to make his life difficult. They
[8:44] Speaker 3: was hacking him anytime he tried to do alley-oop. I'm
[8:47] Speaker 3: going to throw my hands up to the refs. All right,
[8:48] Speaker 3: I'm going to look to see where my power forward
[8:51] Speaker 3: is to take care of this. Okay, I don't got one.
[8:53] Speaker 3: All right, you know what I'm not going to do?
[8:56] Speaker 3: I'm not going to back down. And I know in
[8:58] Speaker 3: the fourth quarter, he stayed away from the paint a
[8:59] Speaker 3: little bit. But, like, I'm going to fight. And this was, like,
[9:04] Speaker 3: one of the conversations we had afterwards where it's like
[9:06] Speaker 3: there's something, and people try to compare it to 2011
[9:09] Speaker 3: LeBron where he kind of, like, receded. And my point was, like,
[9:15] Speaker 3: what I saw was what I liked. Like, it didn't
[9:17] Speaker 3: turn out well. He was exhausted. But what I saw
[9:20] Speaker 3: was a man that was, like.
[9:22] Speaker 2: No, fuck that.
[9:22] Speaker 3: I'm going back in there. Every time I'm a fight,
[9:25] Speaker 3: I'm be sloppy. I'm a miss free throws and turn
[9:26] Speaker 3: the ball over. I may be like fatigued at the
[9:29] Speaker 3: end of the games, but like, At 22 years old,
[9:32] Speaker 3: I came.
[9:32] Speaker 2: Away with this shit kind of impressed by him, and
[9:34] Speaker 2: I know he choked.
[9:36] Speaker 1: But I didn't think he receded. I thought the only
[9:39] Speaker 1: time I felt like it started to feel like choking
[9:41] Speaker 1: was at the end of game five when none of
[9:43] Speaker 1: those guys wanted a shot. And I view choking a
[9:46] Speaker 1: little differently than most people. In individual sports, we treat
[9:49] Speaker 1: it much differently because everybody chokes and there's nowhere to hide.
[9:53] Speaker 1: You've seen Serena Williams choke. You've seen Tiger Woods choke.
[9:56] Speaker 1: Anybody worth a damn at an individual sport, you have watched.
[10:00] Speaker 1: choke because it happens sometimes where your mind comes away
[10:03] Speaker 1: from you, betrays you, whatever it is. It's not that crazy.
[10:06] Speaker 1: We've seen Kobe Bryant airball the free throws. We've seen
[10:09] Speaker 1: like we've seen dudes do a million things in the
[10:12] Speaker 1: course of the moment. He played very well, I thought,
[10:15] Speaker 1: in that series. I don't think that you can look
[10:17] Speaker 1: at the numbers and say he didn't. I said game four.
[10:20] Speaker 1: What gets lost in it is he made two huge
[10:23] Speaker 1: defensive plays at the end. One of them was the
[10:26] Speaker 1: block that set up De'Aaron Fox to, you know, ruin
[10:29] Speaker 1: his reputation in front of everybody. He played great defense
[10:34] Speaker 1: on Jalen Brunson. When Jalen Brunson missed the shot and
[10:37] Speaker 1: then OG came in because De'Aaron Fox did not feel
[10:41] Speaker 1: like boxing anymore. And it's a real, real, real tough
[10:44] Speaker 1: go for De'Aaron Fox. Like, this was, it's amazing. People
[10:47] Speaker 1: are like, they got to trade him.
[10:48] Speaker 2: One, they're not.
[10:49] Speaker 1: Number two, the reason you think they need to trade him,
[10:52] Speaker 1: you think somebody was like, ooh, give me some of that.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that.
[10:56] Speaker 3: You're going to have to staple something on to it
[10:58] Speaker 3: at that point. You can't be giving away these assets
[11:02] Speaker 3: in that way. But yeah, there's obviously fair criticism of
[11:07] Speaker 3: Wimby in this series, but I ultimately thought similar to you.
[11:11] Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, he He played really well, all things considered.
[11:15] Speaker 3: And what it looked like was, and I think sometimes
[11:18] Speaker 3: we fall into these traps where we want to fall in,
[11:21] Speaker 3: or we go with these easy tropes, and I run
[11:23] Speaker 3: the risk of doing this now where it's about age.
[11:26] Speaker 3: But it did feel like every game he came out,
[11:29] Speaker 3: and they started fast. Every game, it just felt like,
[11:32] Speaker 3: a damn wild teenager out there. I was like, I'm
[11:34] Speaker 3: going to beat these motherfuckers right now. Yes. And then
[11:37] Speaker 3: they get to the end of the game and it's like,
[11:39] Speaker 3: you learn that. You watch Jalen Brunson in the course
[11:41] Speaker 3: of this. It's like, all right, he like measured. And
[11:43] Speaker 3: then that first quarter energy that set the tone energy
[11:47] Speaker 3: that Wimby was bringing, Jalen was bringing in the fourth quarter.
[11:50] Speaker 2: So I think that's part of it too.
[11:52] Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson became like guy you must respect in this. Look,
[11:57] Speaker 1: he put up 45 in the game with her. And
[11:59] Speaker 1: I think the part that makes it tricky is His,
[12:02] Speaker 1: I'm doing this, he just does it. It's not really
[12:06] Speaker 1: that much fun to watch, right? He does not look
[12:10] Speaker 1: to be an exceptional talent, but as I keep saying,
[12:12] Speaker 1: none of that matters. What matters is to actually get
[12:15] Speaker 1: it done part. That's why when people start getting into, well,
[12:17] Speaker 1: is he the best player in the NBA? I'm like, man,
[12:19] Speaker 1: let's not even do that, right? It doesn't matter. He
[12:21] Speaker 1: just did the thing, but what he is not is
[12:25] Speaker 1: a guy who engenders polarizing opinions, right? There are short
[12:30] Speaker 1: people that love him like family and then regular sized
[12:34] Speaker 1: people who respect him.
[12:35] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[12:36] Speaker 1: Like that's what we wind up having. Victor, however, we
[12:40] Speaker 1: got that kind of star now where people came out
[12:43] Speaker 1: of that with strong opinions one way or another. He's
[12:46] Speaker 1: the guy that you have to come see. I think
[12:50] Speaker 1: the villain part was almost inevitable just because the Will
[12:54] Speaker 1: Chamberlain line, nobody roots for Goliath, but I never felt
[12:57] Speaker 1: like Shaq was a person that people disliked for whatever reason.
[13:00] Speaker 1: The reason that I think that Victor gets so polarized,
[13:03] Speaker 1: and if we may be frank, people don't like it
[13:06] Speaker 1: when they look at somebody and look at him and
[13:08] Speaker 1: be like, damn, he might be better than me. I
[13:11] Speaker 1: don't mean better than you at basketball. I mean better
[13:15] Speaker 1: than you at being. I'm curious if you think I'm
[13:19] Speaker 1: tripping on this part, as you and I are both
[13:21] Speaker 1: men of what I would consider to be healthy levels
[13:25] Speaker 1: of confidence. And I don't mean healthy as a euphemism.
[13:28] Speaker 1: I mean, healthy as it is in the dictionary. After
[13:33] Speaker 1: a loss with a guy like him, and it was
[13:35] Speaker 1: the same thing with LeBron in 2011, they don't want
[13:38] Speaker 1: you humbled. They want you humiliated. They want you up
[13:44] Speaker 1: there looking defeated. looking like you're ready to cry about it,
[13:48] Speaker 1: everything else. And that's not what they got from him. Like,
[13:51] Speaker 1: I saw people calling him a sore loser. I didn't
[13:53] Speaker 1: say that at all. He was like, look, man, they
[13:55] Speaker 1: beat us at the margins. Like, Jalen Brunson, he is relentless.
[13:58] Speaker 1: He never stops. Like, I saw the credit go in
[14:01] Speaker 1: that direction. And then I realized, oh. Y'all just want
[14:06] Speaker 1: this man to look battered. And he's not going to
[14:09] Speaker 1: give you that. He about to go up in the mountains,
[14:12] Speaker 1: do some goddamn Tai Chi or something else like that.
[14:15] Speaker 1: Who knows what he's going to come back and look at.
[14:17] Speaker 1: But he almost got too much perspective. Like people, people
[14:21] Speaker 1: don't want somebody that knows how to handle adversity in
[14:24] Speaker 1: a positive way. They want somebody who cry when they
[14:27] Speaker 1: read tweets.
[14:28] Speaker 2: And he's like, I don't read your tweets. What are
[14:31] Speaker 2: you talking about?
[14:33] Speaker 3: It is amazing for somebody that age. Like, imagine, you
[14:37] Speaker 3: could use athletes or an average 22-year-old.
[14:39] Speaker 2: Like, it's clear. He said, what he did.
[14:43] Speaker 3: It's just so funny because after they won that series,
[14:46] Speaker 3: he was like, championships are all that matters to me. Like,
[14:49] Speaker 3: this is the reason why I'm on this earth. And
[14:51] Speaker 3: he gives everybody the stuff that they want. And it's like,
[14:54] Speaker 3: he's not giving it to you because he knows you
[14:57] Speaker 3: want it, which I think a lot of athletes... are
[15:00] Speaker 3: giving you the thing that they think that you want.
[15:02] Speaker 3: And we like call it quarterback speak sometimes where they
[15:04] Speaker 3: just say, and like athletes are doing that. And there
[15:07] Speaker 3: was a time decades ago when we thought it was
[15:11] Speaker 3: genuine and maybe it was genuine. The hard thing now
[15:14] Speaker 3: is Victor seems to be the type of superstar that
[15:18] Speaker 3: is more talented than just about anybody we've ever seen.
[15:21] Speaker 3: And also gives us the genuine feedback. It doesn't sugarcoat it.
[15:25] Speaker 3: It doesn't play this game that he expects us to play. LeBron,
[15:29] Speaker 3: even though you pointed at time when he's like, I
[15:31] Speaker 3: got money, y'all don't, essentially.
[15:32] Speaker 1: They're great. He did not say that. That's what people heard.
[15:36] Speaker 2: Right, right. I know, I know, I know. But that's
[15:38] Speaker 2: the point. He said, you got to go back to
[15:39] Speaker 2: your life. Well, people were like, ugh, that sounds terrible. Yeah,
[15:45] Speaker 2: that's fine. I was like, my life's pretty good, LeBron.
[15:47] Speaker 2: Good luck next year, buddy.
[15:48] Speaker 3: It's how I felt. But I understand why people would
[15:52] Speaker 3: take it the other way. But I think that LeBron is...
[15:56] Speaker 3: been like super measured in the way that he talks
[15:58] Speaker 3: and saying the things you want to say. Victor hasn't
[16:00] Speaker 3: been that. And up until now, the things that he
[16:02] Speaker 3: said are the things that we wanted to hear.
[16:03] Speaker 2: And they were true.
[16:04] Speaker 3: Now he's behaving in a way that some people don't
[16:06] Speaker 3: want to hear it. Like the whole handshake gate, like
[16:09] Speaker 3: all this stuff to me feels like we have constructed
[16:12] Speaker 3: this factory that is meant to make a certain thing.
[16:16] Speaker 3: And no matter what we put in it, we go
[16:18] Speaker 3: put what's going to come out is this same kind
[16:21] Speaker 3: of track record that we do with these players where
[16:23] Speaker 3: it's like, all right, you're going to be the best.
[16:25] Speaker 3: You can't get over the hump.
[16:27] Speaker 2: You are a villain. And then we're going to.
[16:29] Speaker 3: Watch him come back up three, four, five years from now.
[16:31] Speaker 3: We're going to be all singing Victor's praises.
[16:33] Speaker 1: And give ourselves credit for it. Yeah.
[16:38] Speaker 3: Right?
[16:39] Speaker 1: Like, yeah, you know, we gave that boy a little
[16:41] Speaker 1: something to get over. I'll say this. Anthony Edwards completely
[16:46] Speaker 1: changed the way I look at the handshake at the
[16:49] Speaker 1: end of a series. And for those who didn't see it,
[16:51] Speaker 1: you know, Edwards gave the handshake during the game. And
[16:55] Speaker 1: everybody was like, oh, man, you quitting. They was taking
[16:58] Speaker 1: him out the game. The quitting had already taken place.
[17:03] Speaker 1: That was a post-quit move as opposed to a pre-quit move.
[17:07] Speaker 1: But what he said, I saw some clip where he's
[17:10] Speaker 1: hanging around the crib with his partners. And what he
[17:12] Speaker 1: said was, he was like, look, man, the end of
[17:14] Speaker 1: the series, everybody jumping up and down and all of
[17:17] Speaker 1: this stuff. He's like, man, ain't nobody got no time
[17:20] Speaker 1: to be out here doing all this. Then I got in,
[17:22] Speaker 1: I did it when the time was, gave them the
[17:24] Speaker 1: respect they deserve. And then I rolled out. The Knicks
[17:28] Speaker 1: about to be jumping up and down and doing all.
[17:30] Speaker 2: Of this stuff. Oh man, y'all got it.
[17:33] Speaker 1: Maybe I'll holler at you later. But right now, like
[17:35] Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson went over there to dap him up. That
[17:38] Speaker 1: was very nice of him, right? But I don't think
[17:40] Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson's feelings were hurt. that the dude walked away.
[17:43] Speaker 1: We just need something. Like we got to feed the
[17:46] Speaker 1: beast of the machine.
[17:48] Speaker 2: That's exactly what I, I mean, that's the way I
[17:50] Speaker 2: felt about it. And like, I don't know.
[17:52] Speaker 3: It's funny because I want to say that it's not,
[17:54] Speaker 3: it's an, it's a non-issue. These things are non-issues, but
[17:57] Speaker 3: I do think that we can turn things that are
[17:59] Speaker 3: non-issues into like issues because we talk about it. And like,
[18:03] Speaker 3: we have to talk, the series ended and something unique happened.
[18:07] Speaker 3: Anthony Edwards goes and shakes their hands before the game
[18:09] Speaker 3: is over. People actually had a problem with that. Had
[18:12] Speaker 3: he not shaken their hand. So it's like, there is
[18:15] Speaker 3: a 10 minute period. That is the perfect time to
[18:18] Speaker 3: shake their hand.
[18:19] Speaker 1: Like they, I.
[18:20] Speaker 3: Don't remember what they were down, but they were down
[18:22] Speaker 3: by enough. They were losing by a zillion points. His
[18:24] Speaker 3: coach was like, nah, everybody sit down. Hey, guys are
[18:28] Speaker 3: into the bench. Who I call by their number, not
[18:31] Speaker 3: their name. Go ahead in there.
[18:33] Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I'm going to go. Yeah.
[18:35] Speaker 3: And it's like, no, you can't do that. You also
[18:37] Speaker 3: can't do it back in the back of the locker room.
[18:39] Speaker 3: You got to do it where we can see it
[18:41] Speaker 3: right after. It just feels like you're making it up.
[18:43] Speaker 3: And then the stuff with Victor is, I don't know.
[18:46] Speaker 3: Of course, you're raising kids to play sports. You're like, yeah,
[18:49] Speaker 3: be a good sport. Shake hands afterwards. But we had
[18:53] Speaker 3: a game. It was two years ago. My son was
[18:55] Speaker 3: talking trash. Got into it with a couple of guys.
[18:58] Speaker 3: They like pushing each other on the field.
[19:01] Speaker 2: Don't go over there and shake his hand because you're
[19:02] Speaker 2: not calm.
[19:03] Speaker 3: Yeah. Cause I don't, I don't, I don't want to
[19:05] Speaker 3: do that. Like we, when you feel, if you feel
[19:08] Speaker 3: up to it, go shake his head. Don't put yourself
[19:10] Speaker 3: in that situation. And maybe that's how victims think. Now
[19:12] Speaker 3: I do think there's something to the idea of a
[19:15] Speaker 3: get your snap, snap.
[19:18] Speaker 1: Out of it.
[19:18] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[19:19] Speaker 1: Handle this right. Like, I think there's a lesson in
[19:21] Speaker 1: you don't feel like you doing things you don't feel like, right.
[19:24] Speaker 1: I do think that there is a lesson in that.
[19:26] Speaker 1: I also think that at the NBA point, we're kind
[19:29] Speaker 1: of past the lesson teaching point in some ways. Like
[19:32] Speaker 1: I think, I just think there's a different set of
[19:33] Speaker 1: circumstances that you deal with. Because the other part too,
[19:37] Speaker 1: when you shake hands in youth games, you make everybody
[19:39] Speaker 1: get in line. It is a group endeavor. In the
[19:41] Speaker 1: other stuff, it is like, all right, everybody kind of
[19:44] Speaker 1: get in where you fit in and get it going.
[19:46] Speaker 1: I want to ask you this about the Knicks too.
[19:48] Speaker 1: People say, I've had people tell me they don't think
[19:50] Speaker 1: I'm giving the Knicks enough credit. And I just don't
[19:51] Speaker 1: know how much credit you think I'm supposed to give
[19:53] Speaker 1: the Knicks. Like, I feel like I've given the Knicks
[19:55] Speaker 1: quite a lot of credit in the run of this, right?
[19:58] Speaker 1: I mean, I listened to the show. It seemed like
[19:59] Speaker 1: you gave him credit. I don't know where you undercutting
[20:02] Speaker 1: the Knicks. They won the championship. It was pretty impressive.
[20:05] Speaker 1: But I thought a couple of things in watching this.
[20:08] Speaker 1: And now we're in the aftermath of it, which I
[20:09] Speaker 1: think is the fun. The analysis of the series has
[20:11] Speaker 1: obviously been done. The biggest winners from a championship. It's
[20:16] Speaker 1: not quite Jalen Brunson, who was already at a certain
[20:19] Speaker 1: legend status where I don't think New York was going
[20:22] Speaker 1: to hold it against Jalen Brunson if they did not
[20:24] Speaker 1: win a championship. Right. They do hold it against Patrick
[20:27] Speaker 1: Ewing in some ways, but I did not think they
[20:30] Speaker 1: were going to hold it against Brunson because it was
[20:31] Speaker 1: such a pleasant surprise, you know, and everything that came
[20:34] Speaker 1: with it. Now, the biggest winners from any championship are
[20:37] Speaker 1: dudes like three through 12 on the bench. Because they
[20:43] Speaker 1: get to be somebody in ways that nobody ever expected.
[20:47] Speaker 1: Mikael Bridges, these people have been calling him soft and
[20:50] Speaker 1: talking about how scared he was of the shots. They
[20:53] Speaker 1: had to take him out in game four for Jose Alvarado. Bro,
[20:57] Speaker 1: I was watching the soccer bowl the other day. It
[20:59] Speaker 1: was the French and Senegal game. They put Bridges on
[21:01] Speaker 1: the screen. He got an ovation from the bar. I
[21:05] Speaker 1: don't even know how many people in the bar was
[21:06] Speaker 1: from America. He got an ovation from the bar. Alvarado,
[21:10] Speaker 1: I said it as soon as that game was over,
[21:12] Speaker 1: Alvarado going to go to that Puerto Rico Day Parade.
[21:14] Speaker 1: He went to the Brooklyn one because he from down there.
[21:16] Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, baby, you the king. All those cats, man,
[21:19] Speaker 1: they living the life.
[21:23] Speaker 2: I can't even imagine. In New York City?
[21:26] Speaker 3: I think that 20 years from now, maybe people won't
[21:31] Speaker 3: recognize Alvarado some of those guys, except for when they're
[21:35] Speaker 3: at the garden and they put them on the screen
[21:37] Speaker 3: and they won't necessarily get the same like appreciation. Of course,
[21:42] Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson is on Jeter status now, where it's like,
[21:46] Speaker 3: no matter what he do for the rest of his,
[21:48] Speaker 3: his life in New York city, he won't pay for nothing. Like,
[21:51] Speaker 3: I don't even know how to put into words how
[21:54] Speaker 3: incredible it's going to be for him forever because 20,
[21:57] Speaker 3: 30 years from now, Jalen Brunson is still going to
[21:59] Speaker 3: be the one guy that brought this city a title.
[22:02] Speaker 1: But there's another level. He be going to the temple.
[22:13] Speaker 1: He got his wife. I saw somewhere somebody in Westchester
[22:16] Speaker 1: was like, yeah, they know him as like, oh, the
[22:19] Speaker 1: dude from Temple. So he bringing worlds together. You know
[22:23] Speaker 1: what I'm saying? He gonna fuck around and have a
[22:25] Speaker 1: hooping ass Lenny Kravitz out here too, right? And then
[22:28] Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a whole nother situation. So yeah, like....
[22:33] Speaker 2: Jalen got it figured out, man. They got it good.
[22:35] Speaker 2: He's living the life.
[22:36] Speaker 1: Look, you know how good it was going to be
[22:37] Speaker 1: for them in New York where after the championship, they
[22:40] Speaker 1: would be like, oh, let's go to Vegas. Oh, let's
[22:42] Speaker 1: go to Miami. They was like, no, let's get back.
[22:45] Speaker 2: To the shack. They ain't waiting on us. To be fair, I.
[22:50] Speaker 3: Don't know how to put this in a way that
[22:52] Speaker 3: don't sound crazy, but I think you'll understand and maybe
[22:54] Speaker 3: you'll disagree.
[22:56] Speaker 2: New York has the best everything.
[22:59] Speaker 1: It's got the best everything.
[23:00] Speaker 2: It's just you can't afford it. Yes.
[23:03] Speaker 3: So, like, Vegas has the greatest parties that you can afford.
[23:09] Speaker 2: Yes. Right? That you can get into. That's the thing.
[23:13] Speaker 2: And people don't know. And I'm not saying you like everybody.
[23:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Me.
[23:17] Speaker 2: I'm including me, too.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Like, a couple times I stumbled into one of these
[23:21] Speaker 3: New York parties or somebody told me about it.
[23:24] Speaker 1: I was like, oh, no.
[23:25] Speaker 2: I've lived some good times, had some good fun. Like,
[23:28] Speaker 2: New York in America?
[23:29] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[23:29] Speaker 2: New York got the best.
[23:31] Speaker 3: Everything you want, no matter what you think, that you
[23:35] Speaker 3: can get something better somewhere else.
[23:37] Speaker 2: I don't care if it was originated there. Right. It's
[23:40] Speaker 2: better in New York. You just don't know how to
[23:42] Speaker 2: get it.
[23:43] Speaker 3: And so if you are a guy in New York
[23:45] Speaker 3: that can get in all the doors, never, ever leave Manhattan, sir.
[23:50] Speaker 1: It's eight million people who can't wait to see you. Right?
[23:55] Speaker 1: 8 million people who cannot wait to see you. They've
[23:58] Speaker 1: been doing this.
[23:59] Speaker 3: Sorry, let me cut you off. Can I ask you
[24:01] Speaker 3: this question? What do you think his persona and reach
[24:09] Speaker 3: and access is worth? Put his contract aside. Now what
[24:14] Speaker 3: he has access to, if you could sell it, he
[24:18] Speaker 3: could get into.
[24:20] Speaker 2: whatever business deals in New York that he's interested in.
[24:23] Speaker 3: He'd get into every club, every restaurant, get into movies
[24:27] Speaker 3: and TV shows.
[24:28] Speaker 2: I don't even know what the limit is.
[24:30] Speaker 3: If this was for sale, what do you think somebody
[24:32] Speaker 3: would pay to be able to, from now on, be
[24:35] Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson?
[24:36] Speaker 1: There's no room that he cannot get into, right? So
[24:41] Speaker 1: I'll give this, I think I've talked about this before here,
[24:43] Speaker 1: but I'll give this example. I got a buddy of
[24:45] Speaker 1: mine who, and this is a thing that happens kind
[24:48] Speaker 1: of in New York places, people who know people like connectors, right?
[24:51] Speaker 1: There are people who are able to link people. Worldwide
[24:54] Speaker 1: West is a great example of a connector, but that's
[24:56] Speaker 1: a different discussion. And they'll just sometimes put together dinners
[25:00] Speaker 1: with people at the dinners. And so I went to
[25:03] Speaker 1: one of these dinners. I'm sitting across the table from
[25:06] Speaker 1: Ty Ty, Jay-Z's man, right? J.J. Reddick's before he became
[25:11] Speaker 1: the coach. J.J. Reddick in there. I look over. Kevin
[25:13] Speaker 1: Love's over there in this corner. I don't even recognize
[25:18] Speaker 1: half the people. Jimmy Fallon came in in the middle
[25:20] Speaker 1: of the meal, right? My guy Koppelman was there. We
[25:23] Speaker 1: were there. And this one guy walks in and they're like, oh,
[25:28] Speaker 1: it's DJ D. Saul. I'm like, what are you talking about?
[25:30] Speaker 1: That white man don't look like no DJ. This is
[25:32] Speaker 1: a balding white man in a polo and khakis. Dominique
[25:36] Speaker 1: know who I'm talking about. Man's name is David Solomon.
[25:39] Speaker 1: He's the CEO of Goldman Sachs. I'm talking to this
[25:42] Speaker 1: other dude and I ask him what he does. And
[25:44] Speaker 1: he's like, takes a pause and he goes, well, I
[25:47] Speaker 1: started Chipotle. OK, and I'm watching as like some political
[25:52] Speaker 1: deal was made around like with Chipotle sending stuff somewhere
[25:56] Speaker 1: like I'm watching all these things that are happening in
[25:58] Speaker 1: this room. And all I'm saying is I got in
[26:00] Speaker 1: that room, which means that there's another room that I
[26:04] Speaker 1: have no chance of getting into. And there is no
[26:09] Speaker 1: such thing as a room that Jalen Brunson. cannot get into.
[26:14] Speaker 1: And there's so much money in the city. We did
[26:16] Speaker 1: an interview with Tracy Morgan for Game Theory. And it's
[26:19] Speaker 1: always interesting to hear New Yorkers talk about New York,
[26:22] Speaker 1: especially like guys who grew up poor. And I say
[26:25] Speaker 1: that specifically with him because he was like, no, man,
[26:28] Speaker 1: you go, you point right down there. He's pointing is
[26:31] Speaker 1: like all the money in the world is right down there.
[26:34] Speaker 1: You just got to figure out how to go get it.
[26:37] Speaker 2: Right.
[26:37] Speaker 1: Like that's the thing about the proximity of New York
[26:39] Speaker 1: to catch it here. It's just like everything is accessible.
[26:41] Speaker 1: And it's like, if I can just figure out how
[26:44] Speaker 1: to get there, I can get a hold of all
[26:46] Speaker 1: of it. Jalen Brunson ain't got to figure out shit.
[26:49] Speaker 2: Forget the rooms.
[26:51] Speaker 3: I just realized that just about anybody, he could say,
[26:57] Speaker 3: come to me today and they'd be thrilled.
[27:01] Speaker 2: They will post a picture.
[27:02] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[27:04] Speaker 2: That man could get in on any IPO he want
[27:06] Speaker 2: right now.
[27:07] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[27:08] Speaker 2: He's just like, hey, let me get a piece of that.
[27:10] Speaker 1: He ain't even got to give him no money.
[27:12] Speaker 2: Let me get a piece of that. Put my name
[27:13] Speaker 2: on that.
[27:14] Speaker 1: No, that's the thing about these famous cats with these
[27:16] Speaker 1: IPOs or whatever. They just go in and they get
[27:18] Speaker 1: associated with it and go talk to a couple of people.
[27:23] Speaker 3: There's a business here where somebody be like, hey, if
[27:26] Speaker 3: you came into some immediate celebrity like this, we're going
[27:30] Speaker 3: to help you flip this. Jalen Brunson could not have
[27:34] Speaker 3: anticipated this. He can't even be prepared because there's a
[27:37] Speaker 3: period of time where he got the golden ticket. It's
[27:40] Speaker 3: a long period, but he got the golden ticket. He
[27:43] Speaker 3: can flip that into so many different things if he
[27:45] Speaker 3: just was ready for it.
[27:46] Speaker 1: Look, There's nothing he could do to mess this up.
[27:48] Speaker 1: And coming up next, I'm going to tell you how
[27:50] Speaker 1: I know there's nothing he could do to mess this
[27:52] Speaker 1: up because I'm going to tell you who's actually been
[27:54] Speaker 1: the biggest winner in all of this. And it's not
[27:55] Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson. New York, the wait is over. The Knicks

[32:52] Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Dominique Foxworth. I just
[32:57] Speaker 1: said that there's been a bigger winner in this than
[32:58] Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson. And when I say the answer, it's going
[33:01] Speaker 1: to seem so obvious, but there's no question who the
[33:03] Speaker 1: biggest winner is.
[33:04] Speaker 2: It's Jim Dolan.
[33:07] Speaker 1: Jim Dolan, like I said, Jalen Brunson has moved up
[33:10] Speaker 1: a tick from where he was already, right? Like he
[33:12] Speaker 1: was going to be New York Knicks legend and that
[33:14] Speaker 1: was going to do a lot of stuff. When the
[33:17] Speaker 1: Knicks won the championship and the owner always gets to
[33:21] Speaker 1: hold the trophy first, right? Which I know bothers a
[33:24] Speaker 1: lot of people, but I get it. You know what
[33:29] Speaker 1: I mean?
[33:30] Speaker 2: I get it.
[33:31] Speaker 1: Dolan has got on that orange spoke sport coat And
[33:36] Speaker 1: he looked so happy to be there because Dolan's biggest
[33:44] Speaker 1: problem as owner of the Knicks in terms of the
[33:46] Speaker 1: on-court product is that he's a Knicks fan. He acts
[33:50] Speaker 1: like a Knicks fan. He does Knicks fan things, right?
[33:54] Speaker 1: But when he grabbed that trophy and was like, and
[33:57] Speaker 1: to the fans of New York, I'm sorry it took
[33:59] Speaker 1: so long, but it won't, you know, we'll do it again.
[34:02] Speaker 1: But as I watched him, I was like, He is
[34:04] Speaker 1: just as happy as every other Knicks fan. I've never
[34:07] Speaker 1: seen an owner look happier, like as though he was
[34:10] Speaker 1: part of it. But Dolan made some moves. I think
[34:13] Speaker 1: Dolan deserves a little more credit for this team than
[34:15] Speaker 1: people want to give him credit for. But he looked
[34:18] Speaker 1: so happy in that moment. It was the first time
[34:21] Speaker 1: I had ever considered that Jim Dolan was a human being.
[34:24] Speaker 1: And then after that, they started sending around that video
[34:27] Speaker 1: of him giving the sacrifice speech that I thought was
[34:30] Speaker 1: pretty mediocre. And it's definitely not some shit I want
[34:33] Speaker 1: to hear from Jim Dolan. But people were like, wow,
[34:36] Speaker 1: that was a really good speech. Like he did the thing.
[34:40] Speaker 1: He he did the thing. He made bold moves along
[34:44] Speaker 1: the way to do the thing. you say everything you
[34:46] Speaker 1: want about the CAA association that the Knicks have as
[34:49] Speaker 1: a franchise and Dolan, but he hired that CAA guy
[34:52] Speaker 1: who brought in the, he brought in his client's kid.
[34:56] Speaker 1: Who's represented by the general manager. It's really weird. What's
[35:00] Speaker 1: going on with all of that. But the bottom line
[35:02] Speaker 1: is all that Dolan stuff kind of came together and
[35:05] Speaker 1: they won a championship.
[35:08] Speaker 3: It is a reminder that in several cases, the ends
[35:13] Speaker 3: justify the means.
[35:14] Speaker 2: And, And we.
[35:19] Speaker 3: Will create whatever mythology we want around you if you
[35:22] Speaker 3: did the thing that we want you to do. If
[35:24] Speaker 3: our last memory of you is you did the most amazing,
[35:27] Speaker 3: exceptional thing, then we'll cook up all this other stuff
[35:30] Speaker 3: and start to pretend like your sacrifice speech was fire.
[35:34] Speaker 3: And all these other things. I'm not someone who... Obviously,
[35:38] Speaker 3: nothing is always absolute. And the ends just by the
[35:41] Speaker 3: means is not something that I stand by. But it
[35:43] Speaker 3: is a reminder that If Michael Jordan never won the
[35:46] Speaker 3: title and he act the way he act, we'd.
[35:48] Speaker 2: Be like, that monster.
[35:51] Speaker 3: If you get them goals, then people are like, oh,
[35:54] Speaker 3: he's a fierce competitor.
[35:56] Speaker 2: We figure it out.
[35:57] Speaker 1: But I will say this also for Dolan. It was
[36:00] Speaker 1: another moment where he looked really human. When he got
[36:02] Speaker 1: to the end of that speech, there was kind of
[36:04] Speaker 1: a look on his face. And I think what dawned
[36:06] Speaker 1: on me was, He really did truly believe last year
[36:10] Speaker 1: they had a team that was good enough to win
[36:12] Speaker 1: a championship. And he looked at those guys this year
[36:15] Speaker 1: in a way that the rest of us did not.
[36:17] Speaker 1: And he really, truly believed this is the chance I've
[36:21] Speaker 1: been waiting on for all these years in owning the team.
[36:25] Speaker 1: And then it happened. Like, can you imagine what a
[36:28] Speaker 1: good mood Jim Dolan has been in for the last
[36:31] Speaker 1: like six, seven weeks? Like, when they were out here
[36:35] Speaker 1: winning elimination games by 60 points? Yeah.
[36:38] Speaker 3: I don't know if he was in a good mood, though.
[36:40] Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think he was in a bad mood.
[36:41] Speaker 3: He was in a fine mood. But I feel like that's, like,
[36:43] Speaker 3: just pressure building on him. Like, I don't know that
[36:46] Speaker 3: he was enjoying it or relieved until just now.
[36:48] Speaker 1: Because he's still a Knicks fan.
[36:49] Speaker 3: Yeah, he's just like, you know this is going to
[36:51] Speaker 3: go wrong at some point. And I think it's interesting
[36:54] Speaker 3: that you said it reminds us that he's a human
[36:56] Speaker 3: being because I think that's a good point. It's like,
[36:57] Speaker 3: and I've been toying around with this idea about, like,
[36:59] Speaker 3: how these people are characters to us a little bit.
[37:02] Speaker 3: It's like, Yes, because we don't really hold in our
[37:06] Speaker 3: head space for these like public people, especially in these
[37:09] Speaker 3: like major dramas to be multiple different things.
[37:11] Speaker 2: Like Jim Dolan was the villain.
[37:13] Speaker 1: That's it.
[37:14] Speaker 2: That's all he was. He's the villain.
[37:15] Speaker 3: They win the championship. Now he had this like resurrection story.
[37:19] Speaker 3: And I think the same is true for a lot
[37:21] Speaker 3: of the characters in this. It's like and that's the
[37:24] Speaker 3: same thing with Wimby. It's like you can't people can't
[37:26] Speaker 3: really hold in their head to multiple things like, oh,
[37:29] Speaker 3: he was a hero.
[37:29] Speaker 2: Now he's a villain.
[37:30] Speaker 1: Right. Now, I will say, the worst adult is still there.
[37:33] Speaker 1: The facial recognition stuff.
[37:34] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[37:34] Speaker 2: That's still there.
[37:35] Speaker 1: The way they deal with media. All the other adult
[37:37] Speaker 1: stuff is there.
[37:38] Speaker 2: And you know what?
[37:39] Speaker 1: Who's to say? He might flip up his whole steez. Like,
[37:43] Speaker 1: trying to figure out the most delicate, politically correct way
[37:49] Speaker 1: to put this. But you ever met somebody and all
[37:54] Speaker 1: they needed was somebody?
[37:57] Speaker 2: Yep.
[37:58] Speaker 1: And then they get somebody. Yep. And then Everything changes.
[38:02] Speaker 1: True story. I'll never forget this. I have a buddy
[38:06] Speaker 1: who has a poor relationship with one of his siblings.
[38:13] Speaker 1: And I witnessed it with my own eyes, right? It
[38:17] Speaker 1: was not to heat. Relatable content for me. And I
[38:20] Speaker 1: watched it and he and I talked about this and
[38:23] Speaker 1: he was talking about how he always felt like his
[38:25] Speaker 1: mom gave the sibling a little bit too much slack, right?
[38:31] Speaker 1: And again, relatable content understood what he was talking about,
[38:34] Speaker 1: but that sibling had had a very big change in
[38:38] Speaker 1: their life. And the mom kept saying, you know, now
[38:41] Speaker 1: that that's happened, I think everything is different.
[38:45] Speaker 2: Right.
[38:45] Speaker 1: And my man was like, really not trying to hear it.
[38:48] Speaker 2: Okay.
[38:48] Speaker 1: All of that. I went and talked to the sibling
[38:53] Speaker 1: and I talked to the sibling for 90 seconds. And
[38:57] Speaker 1: I came back to my friend and was like, Hey,
[39:00] Speaker 1: We're going to talk about this more later, but your
[39:02] Speaker 1: mother is a hundred percent correct. Everything is different. And
[39:07] Speaker 1: it was, it was a, it was a big thing
[39:08] Speaker 1: on that side.
[39:09] Speaker 2: Right.
[39:10] Speaker 1: But we really was like, there is an ease that
[39:13] Speaker 1: has been created by this circumstance. Like everything is different.
[39:17] Speaker 1: Who knows, man, Jim Dota might come around here and
[39:19] Speaker 1: turn into daddy war bus.
[39:20] Speaker 3: I mean, I think people say that often about like
[39:23] Speaker 3: women after they have a, child. Well, maybe not often,
[39:26] Speaker 3: but I've heard it. Women in my life, they had children.
[39:28] Speaker 3: It's like, oh, you're just like, you're just different now.
[39:31] Speaker 1: Especially if it's been difficult. Yeah.
[39:33] Speaker 3: And then you're just like, it changes. And I think
[39:36] Speaker 3: that is Jim Dolan probably feels like that. There might
[39:40] Speaker 3: be an opening for him to be less of the
[39:43] Speaker 3: way that he is. And maybe he'll just experience this.
[39:45] Speaker 2: Love and like it. Like, I don't know what drives
[39:47] Speaker 2: him at this point.
[39:48] Speaker 3: Maybe it's just going to be to just be happy
[39:50] Speaker 3: and enjoy his Knicks championship.
[39:53] Speaker 2: We can pray.
[39:55] Speaker 1: Never mind that a prevailing theory that makes a lot
[39:57] Speaker 1: of sense is part of why this has gone so
[39:58] Speaker 1: well for the Knicks is that Dolan was a little
[40:00] Speaker 1: bit too caught up with the sphere.
[40:02] Speaker 2: Yep. Hands off, man.
[40:04] Speaker 1: You got to say, man, the sphere, for Dolan to
[40:06] Speaker 1: be an apparent moron, the sphere seems like a great
[40:09] Speaker 1: idea that I want to go check out at some point.
[40:12] Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been wanting to check it out, too, and
[40:14] Speaker 3: people around me are like, you got to go see it.
[40:16] Speaker 3: And I look at the rundown, and it's like, They
[40:18] Speaker 3: don't want me to come to the sphere. Yeah, they
[40:22] Speaker 3: not having your type of acts. They ain't putting my
[40:24] Speaker 3: kind of acts up there. When they start putting my
[40:27] Speaker 3: kind of acts up there, maybe I go.
[40:28] Speaker 2: Back out there.
[40:29] Speaker 1: I don't want to see a concert at the sphere,
[40:30] Speaker 1: but they have a movie that they run, and I
[40:34] Speaker 1: would rather go see that. I go to concerts for music.
[40:37] Speaker 2: Right.
[40:37] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I don't need all them
[40:38] Speaker 1: bells and whistles and distractions.
[40:41] Speaker 2: I just.
[40:42] Speaker 1: But I hear they got like... It's like Super IMAX?
[40:45] Speaker 2: Yeah. All right, cool.
[40:47] Speaker 1: I could.
[40:48] Speaker 2: I can run that.
[40:48] Speaker 1: Maybe I see this right fast. It's going to change
[40:50] Speaker 1: gears a little bit. The soccer bowl is going on.
[40:55] Speaker 1: I imagine the soccer bowl has to be super cracking
[40:57] Speaker 1: in D.C., especially. I bet y'all's Africans is having a
[41:00] Speaker 1: great time.
[41:01] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[41:02] Speaker 3: I mean, it's pretty clear. People wear jerseys, so you
[41:06] Speaker 3: can figure out pretty quickly where people are from. But
[41:08] Speaker 3: the fact of the matter is, it don't matter if
[41:12] Speaker 3: you're not.
[41:13] Speaker 2: White, you cheer. It's intense.
[41:18] Speaker 3: Fans of most of the non-white nations. And I don't
[41:23] Speaker 3: know if it's like that everywhere, but it's like, you
[41:25] Speaker 3: assume because somebody got on an Ivory Coast jersey and
[41:28] Speaker 3: they got an accent that they might be from Ivory Coast.
[41:30] Speaker 2: Nah. Don't start guessing. Don't start guessing. They just not white.
[41:37] Speaker 2: That's what it goes.
[41:37] Speaker 1: Well, let me tell you the wild thing that happened
[41:40] Speaker 1: up here in Harlem, USA. So for those of you
[41:43] Speaker 1: who don't know, the Senegalese, they got them a stretch.
[41:47] Speaker 1: 116th Street From Lennox to Frederick Douglass. That is theirs.
[41:53] Speaker 1: The consulate is over there. They be outside all the time.
[41:57] Speaker 1: They got all their restaurants, everything, right? So one of
[42:01] Speaker 1: my buddies hits me and is like, yo, we're going
[42:03] Speaker 1: to go down to 116th and watch the game. Let's go.
[42:06] Speaker 2: I'm like, bet.
[42:07] Speaker 1: Let's go. So we walked down. Brother, NYPD was blocking
[42:11] Speaker 1: off the streets. You had to have a purpose to
[42:15] Speaker 1: go down there and not just like, right. So but
[42:17] Speaker 1: it was funny because one of my buddies, white dude
[42:20] Speaker 1: was going to meet me down there. And he said, hey,
[42:22] Speaker 1: just letting you know, man, they're trying to stop people
[42:24] Speaker 1: coming on the street. He said, I just told him
[42:27] Speaker 1: I was meeting friends and they let me go. But
[42:28] Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that was because I was white.
[42:30] Speaker 3: Right.
[42:31] Speaker 1: And so I got down there. I said the same
[42:33] Speaker 1: thing and they let us go. But it wasn't like
[42:36] Speaker 1: it was the streets was full of people. I couldn't
[42:38] Speaker 1: figure out what they were trying to do. So we
[42:40] Speaker 1: went down. But the spot was a little bit too small.
[42:42] Speaker 1: And so we decided, well, we'll go try spot on
[42:44] Speaker 1: the next block. But they wouldn't let us on the
[42:46] Speaker 1: next block. Like we was giving them that same same
[42:48] Speaker 1: sad ass story. We gave them on the other block.
[42:50] Speaker 1: They weren't going for it. You got a reservation. Let
[42:52] Speaker 1: me see if you don't work here or you don't
[42:54] Speaker 1: live here. Like, I don't know what they were afraid
[42:56] Speaker 1: was going to happen. in the Senegalese part of town
[42:59] Speaker 1: during this match. But NYPD, what's up Zoran? Have you
[43:03] Speaker 1: heard about this? NYPD set up the barricades and they
[43:07] Speaker 1: weren't letting people go. And it was really kind of
[43:09] Speaker 1: messed up because not every Senegalese person lives on 116th.
[43:14] Speaker 1: So if they were living on like 118th and they
[43:16] Speaker 1: wanted to pull up, they weren't letting them show up.
[43:19] Speaker 1: Like I didn't understand what it was. So we say, fine,
[43:22] Speaker 1: we go to Harlem Tavern on 116th. Frederick Douglass, and
[43:26] Speaker 1: we watched the match there because that is where the
[43:28] Speaker 1: Senegalese fans wound up going, along with about three or
[43:33] Speaker 1: four French fans who I contend were doing a terrible
[43:38] Speaker 1: job of reading the room. and it was white, you
[43:42] Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? And I don't know if they
[43:44] Speaker 1: was from France. I don't know exactly. I don't know
[43:47] Speaker 1: how they chose this location. Maybe they was tourists, and
[43:49] Speaker 1: they didn't realize exactly what they were in. It was
[43:52] Speaker 1: a fun place to be for the game, man, because
[43:53] Speaker 1: when Senegal did anything, it was cool. But, you know,
[43:57] Speaker 1: the French wound up winning. And I will be honest
[43:59] Speaker 1: with you, when Mbappe hit that goal to put it
[44:01] Speaker 1: up 3-1, that shit felt like running up the score, man. Like,
[44:04] Speaker 1: it ain't even... They ain't even like, it just got
[44:06] Speaker 1: the excitement. Woo. Senegal scored a goal. They had another goal.
[44:10] Speaker 1: Take it away for an offside. Everything was cool. It
[44:12] Speaker 1: was immediate. Mbappe. I don't know what word they got
[44:15] Speaker 1: for people like him in French. You know what I'm saying? But,
[44:19] Speaker 1: cause that, you know, cause that's real weird there. Like
[44:22] Speaker 1: the Senegalese team is a bunch of French dudes. The
[44:24] Speaker 1: French team has a bunch of Senegalese dudes. It's all
[44:26] Speaker 1: over the place. But it was so interesting, cause as
[44:29] Speaker 1: I'm walking out, this dude recognized me and was like,
[44:32] Speaker 1: what team were you rooting for? You know how offended
[44:34] Speaker 1: I was? That he asked me that question? It's France
[44:38] Speaker 1: versus Senegal, and you're asking me who I'm rooting for?
[44:41] Speaker 1: You think I'm rooting for oppression?
[44:44] Speaker 2: You think I'm rooting for the colonizer? Yeah, yeah.
[44:47] Speaker 1: What did you think? Now, when France plays Spain, I lay,
[44:52] Speaker 1: lay blue.
[44:52] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[44:54] Speaker 1: Oh, that was the other funny part. So after the
[44:57] Speaker 1: game was over, it was a woman, and it was
[44:59] Speaker 1: so confusing. She had on a Senegal t-shirt that said,
[45:05] Speaker 1: the lions, I guess, right? Out of nowhere, she just
[45:09] Speaker 1: starts singing. Man, them people at the bar turned around
[45:16] Speaker 1: and looked at her. This one middle-aged woman looked at her.
[45:19] Speaker 1: I ain't never seen daggers shoot at somebody like that.
[45:23] Speaker 1: And then I looked and that woman had a handful
[45:24] Speaker 1: of French flags. She was just trying to get that money, dog.
[45:30] Speaker 2: But she almost got it. Yeah, I don't have I'm
[45:35] Speaker 2: not that person.
[45:36] Speaker 3: I know people when I went to the basketball game
[45:38] Speaker 3: and Spencer Halls was there and by himself and with
[45:42] Speaker 3: Spurs up on. celebrating in the middle of the crowd
[45:45] Speaker 3: every time anything happened early in the game.
[45:48] Speaker 2: I don't got that in me.
[45:50] Speaker 3: If I'm going to a game and I'm rooting for
[45:53] Speaker 3: the other team, I'm going to be chill. I don't
[45:56] Speaker 3: get that impulse to be like, hey, everybody go into
[45:59] Speaker 3: somebody's house.
[46:00] Speaker 2: And act the ass. I don't have that in me.
[46:02] Speaker 2: I don't know the type of people who do, but yeah.
[46:05] Speaker 3: I know this one was selling flags, but those other people,
[46:08] Speaker 3: I'm going to go back and watch in my hotel room.
[46:10] Speaker 1: No, I get the impulse. I get the desire. I
[46:13] Speaker 1: just felt like you as a French man need to understand.
[46:16] Speaker 2: Yeah, this ain't just a game.
[46:18] Speaker 1: The stakes is a little high for this jibber-jabber that
[46:20] Speaker 1: you're doing. I tell you this, though. I don't know
[46:23] Speaker 1: if this happened to your social media feeds, but somebody
[46:26] Speaker 1: on Tuesday decided, yeah, Tuesday, somebody decided you need Cape
[46:33] Speaker 1: Verde content in your life. And it was just pumping
[46:37] Speaker 1: me nonstop videos of Cape Verdean women at soccer matches.
[46:42] Speaker 1: I got all of it, all of it, all of it.
[46:44] Speaker 1: And if I had been in Atlanta and I had
[46:48] Speaker 1: seen that in the morning, I'd have been on StubHub, SeatGeek,
[46:52] Speaker 1: whichever one it was. I'd have caught the martyr down there.
[46:56] Speaker 1: Like we got to say, like around New York, man,
[46:58] Speaker 1: I'm not going to be here for most of it.
[47:00] Speaker 1: It's time to start hitting them spots, man.
[47:02] Speaker 3: That is definitely, I mean, and that's always a World
[47:04] Speaker 3: Cup thing too. No matter who playing, they're going to
[47:07] Speaker 3: find them.
[47:07] Speaker 2: Yeah. They're going to find them. Yeah, I was, I
[47:11] Speaker 2: got that same algorithm.
[47:12] Speaker 3: I think it knows our age and race and sexual preference.
[47:17] Speaker 2: It was like, I got you.
[47:20] Speaker 1: Yo, but like if the soccer match is like when
[47:23] Speaker 1: I don't, it appears to be a different archetype of person.
[47:29] Speaker 1: now we're specifically talking about women here, but different archetype
[47:31] Speaker 1: of people for all the different games. But like, there's
[47:33] Speaker 1: a particular archetype of woman who goes to hockey games.
[47:36] Speaker 1: And buddy, that's a sociological study all by itself, right?
[47:41] Speaker 1: It is the football, it's basketball, it's all of it.
[47:44] Speaker 1: The soccer just seems to be a little bit more fun,
[47:46] Speaker 1: a little more sporty. I went to Columbia, Brazil in
[47:50] Speaker 1: 2014 in Miami. And I think I told you, I
[47:54] Speaker 1: didn't know they made jerseys that small.
[47:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[47:59] Speaker 3: It's funny because I was talking to one of my
[48:01] Speaker 3: homeboys and we were going to meet up to watch
[48:04] Speaker 3: the USA game. And we're going to meet up at
[48:08] Speaker 3: a bar to watch the first half, at least the
[48:10] Speaker 3: USA game. And he said to me, what kind of
[48:15] Speaker 3: women is going to be there? These beer drinkers. And
[48:19] Speaker 3: I knew exactly what he meant. I was like, yeah,
[48:22] Speaker 3: it's kind of a little low key. Yeah.
[48:23] Speaker 2: It's going to be beer drinking women here.
[48:25] Speaker 3: And it's not going to be like, vodka tequila drinking
[48:29] Speaker 3: and he was like oh yeah I ain't trying to
[48:30] Speaker 3: go there you got to pick a different spot he's
[48:32] Speaker 3: single so he was like yeah I ain't messing because
[48:34] Speaker 3: you said hockey I was like yeah there's beer drinkers.
[48:38] Speaker 1: I will say this though and I could be wrong
[48:40] Speaker 1: but anytime I've seen clips of like the men's national
[48:43] Speaker 1: team going to play in any of these places um
[48:48] Speaker 1: it's looking like a sausage party I don't feel like
[48:51] Speaker 1: American soccer interest has gotten to the point where this
[48:54] Speaker 1: is a place for women to get cute and have
[48:56] Speaker 1: a good time Definitely not.
[48:59] Speaker 2: I could be wrong, but I don't see it. I
[49:03] Speaker 2: don't know.
[49:03] Speaker 3: I mean, I think you probably know you do a
[49:05] Speaker 3: lot of traveling, but the place that it holds in
[49:08] Speaker 3: society and other places is so much more important. And
[49:11] Speaker 3: as much as we love football, I don't even think
[49:13] Speaker 3: for a lot of these soccer nations that our country
[49:16] Speaker 3: loves football as much as as they love soccer and as,
[49:21] Speaker 3: as ingrained as it is in the culture and society.
[49:23] Speaker 2: It's like a thing. It reminds me a little bit.
[49:26] Speaker 3: And again, you can speak better to this than me,
[49:28] Speaker 3: but it reminds me of like Texas high school football.
[49:31] Speaker 3: And like, it's, it's a part, it's like a real,
[49:34] Speaker 3: sector of their lives in a way that sports isn't
[49:37] Speaker 3: for us in America.
[49:38] Speaker 1: Now, this is an amazing time to be in New
[49:41] Speaker 1: York City. I know people are probably tired of hearing
[49:42] Speaker 1: me say that, but the Knicks just won the championship,
[49:45] Speaker 1: and then the World Cup energy is just all over
[49:48] Speaker 1: the place. People hitting me up, one of my buddies
[49:50] Speaker 1: is coming to town for the World Cup. He was like, yo,
[49:52] Speaker 1: Brazil is everywhere. Right?
[49:55] Speaker 2: Like, it is a, like, you.
[49:57] Speaker 1: Go find a neighborhood, you go find a bar, you
[49:59] Speaker 1: go find a spot or whatever it is. It's been
[50:01] Speaker 1: some what we call perfect New York days where that
[50:03] Speaker 1: weather been hitting just right. Like, this is a perfect
[50:07] Speaker 1: confluence of circumstances right now for the entirety of the
[50:10] Speaker 1: sporting world. Because the other thing about the Knicks winning
[50:12] Speaker 1: the championship that is interesting, everybody seems happy for them.
[50:17] Speaker 1: Except for like Celtics fans.
[50:19] Speaker 2: Are they mad? I didn't know. I mean, there's a robbery.
[50:22] Speaker 1: You know, there's a bit of a robbery that we
[50:24] Speaker 1: don't think about because the Knicks been sorry. And quite honestly,
[50:26] Speaker 1: the Celtics have been sorry for a long time, too.
[50:28] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's been pretty universal.
[50:31] Speaker 3: This this story, Jalen Brunson fits so perfectly into like
[50:35] Speaker 3: this underdog story. like arc and people have all fallen
[50:40] Speaker 3: in love with that team. When we did the thing
[50:42] Speaker 3: to make it easy to root against them. And it's
[50:44] Speaker 3: New York. Like, yeah, it feels like the whole country
[50:46] Speaker 3: is on board, which is a unusual thing for New York.
[50:48] Speaker 3: And I know you've made the point before about how
[50:51] Speaker 3: it's the only basketball.
[50:52] Speaker 2: Team in Manhattan. Yeah. And that's whatever, but.
[50:56] Speaker 1: Like people like the nets need to just give it up.
[50:59] Speaker 2: Pack it up guys.
[51:01] Speaker 1: But you have to take the nets for what they are.
[51:05] Speaker 1: And yeah, The Nets are an off-Broadway show, and if
[51:12] Speaker 1: you would like to go see a show and you
[51:14] Speaker 1: don't want to pay Broadway prices, then you go see
[51:18] Speaker 1: the Nets. That's what the Clippers always were, especially Staples
[51:22] Speaker 1: Center era Clippers. That's what they were. The Lakers, that
[51:25] Speaker 1: cost a little too much money, but LeBron's in town.
[51:27] Speaker 1: They're playing against the Clippers. Why don't you go pull up?
[51:30] Speaker 2: And, you know, and.
[51:32] Speaker 1: Check out the game like that's that's what the Nets are.
[51:35] Speaker 1: But if they were ever going to get a hold
[51:37] Speaker 1: of like an actual factual.
[51:39] Speaker 2: Fan base, that is a wrap.
[51:42] Speaker 1: Like, how would you if you didn't have a team
[51:45] Speaker 1: and you were like young in New York, how would
[51:47] Speaker 1: you ever decide that you're not going to get on
[51:49] Speaker 1: the Knicks way?
[51:52] Speaker 3: I'm old and not in New York, and I bought
[51:54] Speaker 3: a hat and a t-shirt. I'm a 43-year-old man living
[51:58] Speaker 3: in D.C. I'm on the bandwagon. There's nothing about the
[52:01] Speaker 3: Nets that I'm surprised. I'm done talking about them.
[52:06] Speaker 1: It's just I don't, like, maybe you guys should move.
[52:10] Speaker 1: That's the team people talk about. Maybe they should move
[52:12] Speaker 1: to Nashville. I don't know, but it's not. No, man,
[52:18] Speaker 1: the Knicks were wobbly.
[52:21] Speaker 2: Right.
[52:21] Speaker 1: Like it was the Nets. The Nets needed to just
[52:24] Speaker 1: mess around and win them championships when they had them boys.
[52:27] Speaker 2: They might.
[52:27] Speaker 3: And I mean, they still wouldn't have taken over for
[52:30] Speaker 3: the Knicks, but they had a chance of being like
[52:32] Speaker 3: a cool, different franchise.
[52:34] Speaker 2: They launched and it just always felt so contrived.
[52:36] Speaker 3: It was like, look, we from Brooklyn. We're going to
[52:39] Speaker 3: wear the Biggie jerseys. Jay-Z is a part owner. We
[52:41] Speaker 3: go buy all these good players and and then not
[52:44] Speaker 3: get nothing done.
[52:45] Speaker 1: You know, maybe just maybe should have stayed their asses
[52:50] Speaker 1: in New Jersey. New Jersey has a distinct identity. New
[52:54] Speaker 1: Jersey is its own place.
[52:57] Speaker 3: It's funny you say that because I feel like I
[52:59] Speaker 3: don't think of New Jersey as its own place. I
[53:00] Speaker 3: know it's a distinct identity, but it feels like New
[53:03] Speaker 3: Jersey is either Philly or New York.
[53:07] Speaker 1: New Jersey is either Philly or New York, except Philly
[53:11] Speaker 1: or New York. are making it very clear to you
[53:13] Speaker 1: that it's New Jersey. I get it.
[53:16] Speaker 2: I know that they don't feel that way.
[53:18] Speaker 3: But for me and the rest of the world and
[53:21] Speaker 3: the people who are in Jersey also, it seems like
[53:24] Speaker 3: they're like, yeah, we real close to New York or
[53:26] Speaker 3: we real close to Philly.
[53:28] Speaker 1: No, there's in the middle New Jersey too.
[53:32] Speaker 2: What you know about middle New Jersey?
[53:34] Speaker 1: That is there.
[53:36] Speaker 2: Exactly. So it ain't.
[53:38] Speaker 3: One of those places went on a dot, as you
[53:40] Speaker 3: would say.
[53:40] Speaker 2: Yes, it is. I'll tell you this, though.
[53:42] Speaker 1: What do I know about Philly, New Jersey? Y'all get
[53:44] Speaker 1: caught slipping.
[53:47] Speaker 2: I feel the same way about New York.
[53:48] Speaker 1: New Jersey.
[53:49] Speaker 2: Philly is different?
[53:51] Speaker 1: Philly, New Jersey. Honestly, I'm just thinking about Camden.
[53:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[53:56] Speaker 3: I don't spend that much time. I spend a lot
[53:58] Speaker 3: of time in New York. So I spend some time
[54:00] Speaker 3: in the New York part.
[54:02] Speaker 2: Of New Jersey. I don't really.
[54:04] Speaker 3: My daughter is in Philly right now running in track nationals,
[54:07] Speaker 3: but I don't really get much time to the Philly portion.
[54:10] Speaker 2: I have not.
[54:11] Speaker 1: Gone to New Jersey of my own volition. I caught
[54:17] Speaker 1: a flight out of Newark for South by Southwest in 2024.
[54:21] Speaker 1: I think that's the last time. It just don't come up.
[54:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's there.
[54:27] Speaker 3: Because the people don't live.
[54:30] Speaker 2: In New York.
[54:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, if you don't have a car.
[54:32] Speaker 2: Yeah. New Jersey is just, like.
[54:35] Speaker 1: It's got great views of the city, though. Like, if
[54:37] Speaker 1: you ever go over there, the city look dope.
[54:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, I see it. But then you come back over
[54:42] Speaker 2: to the city, and the city is actually dope.
[54:44] Speaker 1: It's right here.
[54:47] Speaker 2: Why are you going back for?
[54:48] Speaker 1: What can I say? That is Dominique Fosborough. Check him
