Duke blew a 15-point halftime lead and Bomani is in full hater glory. He relives UConn’s wild comeback, the logo heave that broke Duke’s heart, and why the comedy of the collapse depends entirely on who you root for. They also get into why this NCAA Tournament has felt especially fun, from Illinois’ run to the rise of big-personality coaches like Dan Hurley .Later, Bo unpacks the latest Tiger Woods DUI news, the toll of back pain and painkillers, and what happens when an all-time great can’t really do the one thing that once defined them. Then they hit the college hoops soap opera of Will Wade returning to LSU after his “strong-ass offer” era, the NC State house-buying saga, and why LSU might be building the most obnoxious coaching lineup in America. Plus, voicemails on Duke fans, Jay-Z discourse, and a legendary update on the Dewey situation from last week. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave
[0:07] Speaker 1: original presented by Intuit TurboTax. My name is Bowani Jones.
[0:12] Speaker 1: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for
[0:13] Speaker 1: watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
[0:17] Speaker 1: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
[0:19] Speaker 1: I'm inclined to believe that you are a hater, but
[0:22] Speaker 1: if you're the right kind of hater, you're going to
[0:23] Speaker 1: wish you could give us six stars today. Shout out
[0:26] Speaker 1: to all you Duke fans who are listening. I don't
[0:28] Speaker 1: know why the hell you doing that, baby, because it's
[0:30] Speaker 1: a party over here after they blew that 15-point lead
[0:35] Speaker 1: at halftime. Ryan, I hit you, and I was like, yo.
[0:40] Speaker 1: UConn letting us down. The homie Jason England was like,
[0:43] Speaker 1: UConn letting the hood down. I told you, the game
[0:45] Speaker 1: was over. And then, whittle by whittle, chip here, chip there, ding.
[0:51] Speaker 2: Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
[0:53] Speaker 1: It's like that story about the ant that was, you know,
[0:56] Speaker 1: frittering and, you know, doing shit.
[0:58] Speaker 2: I don't remember how it goes. I just know Duke Laws.
[1:01] Speaker 3: Duke lost in embarrassing fashion.
[1:04] Speaker 2: Yo, yo, yo, hold on, hold on, hold on.
[1:05] Speaker 1: Not just embarrassing fashion, the most embarrassing fashion possible when
[1:08] Speaker 1: you think about it if you are Duke, right? They
[1:11] Speaker 1: lost on a play that seemed to be a demonstration
[1:14] Speaker 1: of weak will and poor fundamentals, which is getting trapped
[1:18] Speaker 1: in the middle of the floor and then the younger
[1:20] Speaker 1: boozer gave up the booty, right?
[1:21] Speaker 2: Couldn't throw the ball over the trap. It got deflected.
[1:25] Speaker 1: And then Duke took the L- When White Braylon hit.
[1:33] Speaker 2: A shot from the logo.
[1:35] Speaker 3: 35-footer.
[1:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, not just any logo. That big-ass NCAA logo. There's
[1:41] Speaker 2: barely any wood spots on the floor with all the
[1:45] Speaker 2: shit they got on the floor.
[1:46] Speaker 1: He hit that shot. That was a ridiculous shot. That
[1:49] Speaker 1: was people like ice water in his veins.
[1:51] Speaker 3: Bullshit.
[1:52] Speaker 2: That was not.
[1:54] Speaker 3: Broken blocks.
[1:55] Speaker 2: No, that was not ice water. That was a hot potato.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Like, it wasn't like he got it, like, hey, turn
[2:02] Speaker 1: this shoulder square. No, he got it. He dropped his
[2:04] Speaker 1: feet back to where it was. He plugged that thing
[2:06] Speaker 1: halfway there. I was like, oh, snap, it's going in.
[2:08] Speaker 1: That was before I even knew his name was White Braylon.
[2:10] Speaker 1: I don't feel like Duke would take on a White Braylon. Like,
[2:12] Speaker 1: I know they done got around to regular Braylons, but
[2:16] Speaker 1: White Braylons, they from the wrong side, like a different
[2:19] Speaker 1: kind of wrong side of the tracks.
[2:20] Speaker 2: You understand what I mean?
[2:22] Speaker 1: I don't know nothing about that boy, by the way,
[2:24] Speaker 1: except he's from some little town in Indiana. If he
[2:28] Speaker 1: is not actually white Braylon, I apologize. I have not
[2:31] Speaker 1: bothered to Google up his parents. But like white white
[2:35] Speaker 1: Braylon is another step.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Right.
[2:37] Speaker 1: Like I think Ryan just took himself off the screen
[2:40] Speaker 1: so he could get on the case. I was.
[2:44] Speaker 2: I was looking at his hair. I won't tell you
[2:50] Speaker 2: the other thing I was going to say. But anyway, boy,
[2:53] Speaker 2: that was fun. That felt good.
[2:55] Speaker 1: I was so glad that game was not like at
[2:57] Speaker 1: 11 o'clock at night because I might have woke up
[3:00] Speaker 1: one of my neighbors and I try to be a
[3:02] Speaker 1: good neighbor.
[3:03] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? I'll do that.
[3:05] Speaker 1: I can't believe that way. I was out here rooting
[3:06] Speaker 1: for Danny Hurley. Danny Hurley is not my type of
[3:08] Speaker 1: hype in about eight different ways. Man, listen, that day
[3:12] Speaker 1: was losing that game so bad at halftime. I was like,
[3:14] Speaker 1: he better go in there and fire their ass up.
[3:17] Speaker 2: That's right. Yeah, dude, do what it takes. You know
[3:20] Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Apparently they did.
[3:23] Speaker 3: Josh and Katie Mullins. I think we can go with
[3:25] Speaker 3: White Braylon. Yeah, I think we're safe.
[3:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're safe. I mean, I'd like to
[3:31] Speaker 2: know the other names that were on the list.
[3:35] Speaker 4: Right?
[3:35] Speaker 1: Like, when you went with White Braylon, I'm like, so,
[3:38] Speaker 1: I guess Andre is an old people's name now. So,
[3:41] Speaker 1: there's all kinds of those names, like Andre, Kareem, right?
[3:45] Speaker 2: Like, I think they are the new Bulas. Right, they're
[3:49] Speaker 2: the new Gertrudes. They're the new names that have just
[3:52] Speaker 2: gotten like Earl.
[3:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, just kind of gone in the ether as the
[3:57] Speaker 3: generations passed.
[3:58] Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really weird that you look up one
[4:00] Speaker 1: day and it's like, yo, this is an old person
[4:02] Speaker 1: name now.
[4:03] Speaker 2: So maybe that's the case, but I don't know.
[4:04] Speaker 1: I want to know what other names they were thinking
[4:06] Speaker 1: before they settled on Braylon. And good thing he could hoop.
[4:09] Speaker 1: In fact, I bet that did great things for him
[4:14] Speaker 1: in the hoop thing. where, I mean, I know people
[4:16] Speaker 1: got access to video and everything, but when they're reading
[4:18] Speaker 1: down the list of who the players are, and you
[4:20] Speaker 1: hear that the boy Braylon is out here killing.
[4:23] Speaker 2: It, you're like, oh shit, let me get a look
[4:24] Speaker 2: at him. You know what I'm saying? And they don't
[4:26] Speaker 2: even know.
[4:27] Speaker 1: Like, it's the people that probably showed up to get
[4:29] Speaker 1: a look at his game that wouldn't have done so
[4:30] Speaker 1: otherwise if his name was, I don't even know what counts.
[4:33] Speaker 2: As a white person name anymore.
[4:34] Speaker 4: Brandon?
[4:36] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[4:36] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[4:37] Speaker 3: It goes both ways, yeah.
[4:38] Speaker 2: I mean, Brandon Ingram is Brandon.
[4:40] Speaker 3: That's true, yeah.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Went to Duke. That is still.
[4:45] Speaker 1: the most unlikely occurrence of my entire life.
[4:51] Speaker 2: And I've seen Donald Trump get elected twice.
[4:56] Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? Like, like, like, like this
[4:59] Speaker 1: is who boy never saw it. Never saw it coming.
[5:01] Speaker 1: Never saw it coming. But anyway, man, I don't even know. Like,
[5:04] Speaker 1: I don't know if I got some analysis for you.
[5:06] Speaker 2: It's been a really, I will say this.
[5:08] Speaker 1: It has felt like a very exciting NCAA tournament. My
[5:11] Speaker 1: brother and Vinny had come over to the crib. We
[5:13] Speaker 1: were watching games on Saturday night. And, um, we were
[5:16] Speaker 1: talking about just how exciting the tournament has been. And
[5:18] Speaker 1: my brother said, he feels like he says that every year.
[5:21] Speaker 1: And Ryan, that's interesting to me because I actually don't
[5:24] Speaker 1: feel like I say that every year. Like I think
[5:26] Speaker 1: most years have some potential, but like even that Illinois,
[5:29] Speaker 1: Iowa game, it wound up being a spread, but that
[5:31] Speaker 1: was a really good, like entertaining game to watch.
[5:34] Speaker 3: And also creating new characters. I mean that Iowa coach
[5:37] Speaker 3: that's come out of nowhere. Who's like, you know, yes.
[5:40] Speaker 3: Like the big tens, like dominance of all sports since NIL, um,
[5:45] Speaker 3: I mean, speaking of Michigan.
[5:48] Speaker 6: Oh, boy.
[5:49] Speaker 2: They beat the brakes off of Tennessee.
[5:52] Speaker 1: And I had sent you a text during the day,
[5:54] Speaker 1: and I was like, am I going to have to
[5:56] Speaker 1: do something about how Rick Barnes actually turned into a
[5:59] Speaker 1: good coach?
[6:01] Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I could, but I don't have to anymore.
[6:03] Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't have to anymore. And speaking of coaches
[6:06] Speaker 3: who are struggling in these tournament rounds, John Shire.
[6:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, one of my good buddies said, what are we
[6:14] Speaker 1: going to admit that John Shire simply has warning track power?
[6:19] Speaker 2: And I don't feel like we can. I mean, I
[6:21] Speaker 2: don't know what.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Yes, you have to give a certain measure of blame
[6:25] Speaker 1: to the coach when you blow a 15 point lead.
[6:28] Speaker 7: Yes.
[6:28] Speaker 6: Right.
[6:29] Speaker 1: But what happened at the end of that game, at
[6:33] Speaker 1: least it felt to me, was just kind of college students,
[6:36] Speaker 1: college freshmen, no less.
[6:38] Speaker 2: Moment got a little bit too big for him.
[6:40] Speaker 1: But, man, you don't really see that much high-level basketball
[6:43] Speaker 1: with a dude getting trapped in the middle of the
[6:46] Speaker 1: floor like that.
[6:48] Speaker 2: Like, I get why he would not want to throw
[6:50] Speaker 2: it back.
[6:51] Speaker 3: Right.
[6:51] Speaker 2: Under any circumstance.
[6:52] Speaker 1: If we can just get this ball across half court,
[6:55] Speaker 1: We're straight. But there was at no point in that
[6:58] Speaker 1: possession did I think that the way it was going
[7:00] Speaker 1: to go is that the ball was going to go
[7:02] Speaker 1: the other way.
[7:04] Speaker 8: Right.
[7:04] Speaker 2: From where it went. Like, I did not think they were.
[7:07] Speaker 3: It starts feeling like the fourth pass.
[7:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think.
[7:10] Speaker 3: Right. Occasionally someone steals the inbounds or something gets deflected
[7:14] Speaker 3: there as a five second. But that turn of events
[7:17] Speaker 3: almost never happens.
[7:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think.
[7:19] Speaker 1: I did not think they were going to force a turnover.
[7:21] Speaker 1: And as we're sitting here, buddy of mine. Buddy J
[7:24] Speaker 1: sent a text that said the difference between comedy and
[7:26] Speaker 1: tragedy is who it happens to.
[7:30] Speaker 4: Correct.
[7:30] Speaker 2: It's so real.
[7:32] Speaker 3: Coming up later in the show, Tiger Woods.
[7:34] Speaker 1: Man, look, I got so loud when the shot went in.
[7:39] Speaker 1: And then I turned conspiracy brother because it was. 3
[7:43] Speaker 1: seconds on the clock and then they put it to.
[7:45] Speaker 1: 4 because as you know, you cannot do catch and
[7:48] Speaker 1: shoot on. 3, but you can on. 4.
[7:50] Speaker 2: Like, there you go.
[7:53] Speaker 3: You see how they do it?
[7:54] Speaker 2: There they go. That's the shit.
[7:55] Speaker 1: That's what we be talking about. See, that's what they do.
[7:58] Speaker 1: That's what they do. But yeah, no, that was a
[8:00] Speaker 1: really good, I mean, tournament all good. Honestly, to me,
[8:03] Speaker 1: that was like the championship game. I mean, I guess
[8:08] Speaker 1: I could watch the final four.
[8:11] Speaker 2: It's an option I have.
[8:12] Speaker 5: Right.
[8:13] Speaker 1: I don't know. But we're going to see. But shout
[8:18] Speaker 1: out to Illinois. You know what I'm saying? The merry
[8:21] Speaker 1: band of Eastern Europeans getting it done. They look really
[8:25] Speaker 1: happy too. Yeah. Like I will say that something that
[8:30] Speaker 1: I do think counts and applies when it comes to
[8:33] Speaker 1: college basketball and that will not change, even with the
[8:36] Speaker 1: money apparently, is the ages by and large of the players. Now,
[8:40] Speaker 1: of course, we got some dudes like that dude that
[8:42] Speaker 1: Michigan got who apparently is almost a pharmacist.
[8:46] Speaker 8: Yeah.
[8:47] Speaker 2: At this point. But maybe I'm just reaching that age.
[8:51] Speaker 1: But them boys at Illinois, when they won that game
[8:54] Speaker 1: and they, you know, with the coach and everything, it
[8:57] Speaker 1: still looked like what you'd idealistically like for college basketball
[9:01] Speaker 1: to look like. And I do think that when you
[9:04] Speaker 1: watch these games like up through your 20s and maybe
[9:08] Speaker 1: even your early 30s, It doesn't hit the same as
[9:11] Speaker 1: it does once you're literally twice as old as the
[9:13] Speaker 1: guys who are out there. And now you do really
[9:16] Speaker 1: start seeing the youthful affect.
[9:19] Speaker 2: Of all of this.
[9:20] Speaker 3: They just start to look younger and younger and younger.
[9:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's an emotional resonance to the whole game
[9:26] Speaker 1: of college basketball that is different than it'll be in
[9:28] Speaker 1: the NBA. And even if these guys are getting money,
[9:31] Speaker 1: this is still, for a bunch of them, the coolest
[9:33] Speaker 1: shit that they're ever going to do in their lives.
[9:35] Speaker 3: Yes, and the highest stage they're going to be on,
[9:37] Speaker 3: by far.
[9:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, and even if they got a bunch of money
[9:40] Speaker 1: in their pockets over it, It's still the coolest shit
[9:42] Speaker 1: that they've ever done. And it still looked like a
[9:45] Speaker 1: game that was being played by people who were engaging
[9:47] Speaker 1: in the coolest thing that they were ever going to do.
[9:50] Speaker 2: And again, maybe this.
[9:51] Speaker 1: Is simply a perspective that I had to age into.
[9:54] Speaker 1: But there is a charm to that. And I have
[9:57] Speaker 1: been a person who has said the player should absolutely
[9:59] Speaker 1: get it.
[10:00] Speaker 2: Paid, right?
[10:01] Speaker 1: But it was going to make things a little bit
[10:04] Speaker 1: less fun.
[10:05] Speaker 4: Right.
[10:05] Speaker 2: There was no way around that.
[10:07] Speaker 1: So like, for example, Darren Peterson was unaffected by losing
[10:13] Speaker 1: in the second round of that game in a way
[10:15] Speaker 1: that I don't think happens in a world before all
[10:18] Speaker 1: this money. I just, as somebody who clearly cares about
[10:21] Speaker 1: winning and stuff like that, right? Like, I don't think
[10:23] Speaker 1: that's how that winds up going. But I did, I
[10:26] Speaker 1: saw this also with the Michigan guys after they won.
[10:28] Speaker 1: I didn't really get a chance to watch the UConn
[10:31] Speaker 1: celebration because I was too busy having one of my own. But,
[10:35] Speaker 1: you know, I imagine that they was over there like
[10:37] Speaker 1: pretty happy too. It does still feel like the NCAA tournament,
[10:40] Speaker 1: which is very important for the NCAA. I have understood that,
[10:46] Speaker 1: more than I think most people who share my views do,
[10:50] Speaker 1: the reason that they kind of viewed all this money
[10:53] Speaker 1: as an existential threat to the game, because it was
[10:56] Speaker 1: counter to the branding that they had sold. Like whether
[10:58] Speaker 1: or not you thought amateurism was important, it was a
[11:01] Speaker 1: linchpin of what they sold. And the idea that these
[11:03] Speaker 1: guys are in it for the love of the game
[11:05] Speaker 1: was huge. And they are clearly not just in this
[11:08] Speaker 1: for the love of the game. They might love it too,
[11:10] Speaker 1: but this is not a noble sport in pursuit at
[11:14] Speaker 1: this point. But it still felt like it with these
[11:17] Speaker 1: games at the end. It still felt like it with
[11:20] Speaker 1: these buzzer beaters that we saw. And that's important for
[11:24] Speaker 1: all these parties involved, that it still feels that way.
[11:28] Speaker 1: Because otherwise, the basketball simply is not good enough to
[11:32] Speaker 1: support this without the trappings that are around it.
[11:34] Speaker 2: Like that big boy Reed, that played for UConn. It
[11:37] Speaker 2: was amazing. He had great footwork.
[11:39] Speaker 1: He had great post moves, but he could never get
[11:41] Speaker 1: it done on the first one. It was like, God damn,
[11:43] Speaker 1: just go up. Nope, I got a dream shake a
[11:45] Speaker 1: couple more times. And then eventually he'd always get there.
[11:48] Speaker 1: But it was just like, oh yeah, that's right. These
[11:50] Speaker 1: guys aren't that good at basketball. It's just fun to
[11:52] Speaker 1: watch them play it.
[11:53] Speaker 8: Right.
[11:54] Speaker 3: Do you think part of that is... the the characters
[11:59] Speaker 3: of the coaches store like kind of re-emerging themselves uh
[12:03] Speaker 3: obviously rick patino made a big run calipari went far
[12:07] Speaker 3: i mean dan hurley is now becoming moving up in
[12:10] Speaker 3: the ranks of great college basketball.
[12:12] Speaker 1: Yes it helps it helps i mean look i was
[12:14] Speaker 1: thinking about this and we'll talk a little bit more
[12:17] Speaker 1: about ryan's messy ass school in a little bit we'll
[12:20] Speaker 1: get there but I am a person who does not,
[12:24] Speaker 1: I'm a person who loves Kim Mulkey because I love
[12:26] Speaker 1: that Kim Mulkey exists. Not because I agree with Kim
[12:29] Speaker 1: Mulkey on a bunch of things or whatever it is.
[12:31] Speaker 1: I love the fact that she exists. I love the
[12:34] Speaker 1: fact that she'd be out there. wearing them crazy get-ups
[12:37] Speaker 1: on the sidelines. Yeah, I love how obnoxious she is
[12:41] Speaker 1: about her political views and the things she says at
[12:44] Speaker 1: the days and stuff like that, because we need more
[12:47] Speaker 1: of those.
[12:48] Speaker 2: That is the thing with Dan Hurley.
[12:50] Speaker 1: Dan Hurley has taken it upon himself to be, like,
[12:53] Speaker 1: there aren't that many full-on assholes left.
[12:55] Speaker 2: He's out there asking referees if they want LASIK. Yeah.
[13:00] Speaker 2: Like he's a fan. Like he's heckling the refs. Dude,
[13:03] Speaker 2: you can't do that. What are you talking about?
[13:05] Speaker 1: But these characters are necessary to make this game go.
[13:09] Speaker 1: The players as characters in a certain way, you don't
[13:14] Speaker 1: want them to seem like they've done this before.
[13:18] Speaker 2: You don't want it. And it doesn't look like that.
[13:22] Speaker 1: And again, this is a huge nail in the coffin
[13:24] Speaker 1: for the NCAA because I thought they were right. in
[13:27] Speaker 1: believing that that would be affected or changed by all this.
[13:30] Speaker 1: But no, actually, it has not. And maybe, if we're
[13:33] Speaker 1: being honest, I think that's true, though I could be wrong,
[13:37] Speaker 1: just because I'm so, so happy that Duke lost. Listen
[13:43] Speaker 1: to this, listen to this. A man just sent me
[13:45] Speaker 1: a text, the homie Jason.
[13:48] Speaker 2: So Duke.
[13:50] Speaker 1: Has had their last four losses, which goes into last season.
[13:55] Speaker 2: Because this is only the third loss they had this year.
[13:57] Speaker 2: This was the.
[13:58] Speaker 1: Peak in-game win probability for those last four losses. In
[14:02] Speaker 1: the Final Four against Houston in 2025, 97.5. December 2025
[14:04] Speaker 1: against Texas Tech, 97.8.
[14:08] Speaker 2: February against Carolina, 95.1. Today against UConn, 98.7.
[14:10] Speaker 4: And.
[14:25] Speaker 1: I'm not, like, about that church life. Just never really
[14:29] Speaker 1: been my bag. However, it's clear that there's only one
[14:33] Speaker 1: reasonable explanation for that.
[14:37] Speaker 2: God don't like ugly. Tiger Woods, I was.
[14:48] Speaker 1: At a memorial service on Friday, when the word came
[14:52] Speaker 1: down that Tiger Woods had got busted for DUI, and
[14:54] Speaker 1: I'm there, and somebody who had previously been very invested
[14:58] Speaker 1: in Tiger Woods just loudly says, man, fuck him.
[15:01] Speaker 2: I was like, whoa.
[15:04] Speaker 1: The news of Tiger getting this DUI, it's interesting because
[15:09] Speaker 1: Tiger's 50 years old, but you normally see that sort
[15:13] Speaker 1: of hostility, and he's not the only person.
[15:16] Speaker 2: That had such a feeling.
[15:18] Speaker 1: And maybe I think a certain part of that is
[15:20] Speaker 1: the stigma that's associated with DUI. But it's like Tiger's
[15:26] Speaker 1: being treated like he's somebody who's wasting his potential still,
[15:29] Speaker 1: because that's the thing that normally brings it out of people.
[15:33] Speaker 1: I had a conversation with my good buddy Michael Collins
[15:35] Speaker 1: the other day, and we were talking about the fact
[15:37] Speaker 1: that people still think Tiger Woods can win golf tournaments.
[15:42] Speaker 1: He's 50 years old. He's got all these issues and
[15:45] Speaker 1: everything else. And it's like, yo, you think Tiger's going
[15:47] Speaker 1: to play in the Masters? As if he has a
[15:49] Speaker 1: chance to play. Nobody cared in 1992 if Jack Nicklaus
[15:53] Speaker 1: was going to play in the Masters.
[15:55] Speaker 2: Like, oh, he's going to play. We're going to watch, right?
[15:58] Speaker 2: But that's how it feels.
[16:00] Speaker 1: People view Tiger as like, oh, we still think that
[16:02] Speaker 1: he can win this or whatever. And so therefore, when
[16:05] Speaker 1: he has these things happen, the thought is he's The
[16:10] Speaker 1: thought is in line with his recklessness and his selfishness, right?
[16:15] Speaker 2: I'm not inclined to go there.
[16:18] Speaker 1: Now, an important detail is I haven't read any of
[16:22] Speaker 1: these books that are about Tiger Woods or even I
[16:25] Speaker 1: did not read that really lengthy Wright Thompson story. Did
[16:28] Speaker 1: you read that one about Tiger and the Navy SEAL stuff?
[16:30] Speaker 3: I also read the— The Unauthorized Biography. It came out
[16:35] Speaker 3: about five years ago.
[16:36] Speaker 1: Okay, so I know the right Thompson piece. That's the
[16:39] Speaker 1: one about him trying to be a Navy SEAL and
[16:40] Speaker 1: all this stuff, right? And so it's kind of, his
[16:43] Speaker 1: 30s were spent kind of chasing these hyper-masculine pursuits, many
[16:49] Speaker 1: of which messed up his body.
[16:50] Speaker 2: Like, is that a fair characterization?
[16:52] Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, messed up his back and his knees.
[16:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I guess he was 34, right?
[17:00] Speaker 1: In 09 or right around 34 because his birthday is
[17:03] Speaker 1: at the very end of the year uh when he
[17:05] Speaker 1: crashed car in the driveway and all of these things
[17:09] Speaker 1: um but i saw somebody who was just like i
[17:12] Speaker 1: forget what they said about his 20s and his 30s
[17:14] Speaker 1: was you know chasing these macho things or whatever and
[17:17] Speaker 1: then you know it gets to the 40s and i
[17:18] Speaker 1: think i understand wanting to dismiss him because of you
[17:24] Speaker 1: know like the idea of that simple sort of masculinity
[17:27] Speaker 1: I understand why people think it's stupid, but I also
[17:29] Speaker 1: understand why somebody would chase it. You know, because in
[17:33] Speaker 1: the end, man, as stupid and silly as people think
[17:35] Speaker 1: that macho stuff is, man, macho dudes who pull it off,
[17:39] Speaker 1: they test really well. People really like them, including the
[17:43] Speaker 1: people they claim they think is stupid.
[17:45] Speaker 3: And they achieve a lot of great things that other
[17:47] Speaker 3: people don't.
[17:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's a thing.
[17:50] Speaker 1: I get why one would chase it, especially somebody like
[17:53] Speaker 1: him who, for what you can know about him without
[17:56] Speaker 1: having read all the books or read all the articles,
[17:59] Speaker 1: he's just always been a little lost in trying to
[18:01] Speaker 1: find himself, right? Like that Cabellan Asian thing. That's a
[18:07] Speaker 1: lost person trying to find himself. And at this point
[18:11] Speaker 1: in his life, where he can't even really play golf,
[18:15] Speaker 1: which is the one place where he knew exactly who
[18:17] Speaker 1: he was.
[18:18] Speaker 2: He was Tiger fucking Woods. You can't even really do that.
[18:21] Speaker 1: Like, the fact that Tiger Woods is out there on
[18:24] Speaker 1: that virtual golf shit they be showing, you see that?
[18:26] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[18:27] Speaker 2: The fact that he participates in this?
[18:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and he's a big part of the
[18:30] Speaker 3: reason he exists.
[18:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is kind of beneath you, except golf. It's
[18:36] Speaker 1: the place where he gets it. It's the place where
[18:38] Speaker 1: he knows.
[18:38] Speaker 2: And so.
[18:40] Speaker 1: The idea that he wouldn't know what to do with
[18:43] Speaker 1: himself makes sense, right? If I had to guess, the
[18:47] Speaker 1: biggest reason LeBron James is still playing basketball is what else.
[18:50] Speaker 2: Is he going to do?
[18:51] Speaker 1: And we can have all our arguments about, you could
[18:53] Speaker 1: run a business, you could do this, you could do that,
[18:55] Speaker 1: all those things that we could say, but nothing else
[18:57] Speaker 1: in the world for LeBron James is going to feel
[18:59] Speaker 1: like LeBron James feels playing basketball.
[19:03] Speaker 2: And I'm not saying LeBron doesn't know who he is
[19:04] Speaker 2: because I think he has a much clearer sense. of
[19:06] Speaker 2: who he is, right? His role and stuff. I think
[19:09] Speaker 2: he's very aware of those things.
[19:11] Speaker 1: He is not a lost soul in the way that
[19:13] Speaker 1: I feel that Tiger Woods has been a lost soul.
[19:17] Speaker 1: But Alan Shipnuck, the golf writer, I don't know if
[19:20] Speaker 1: you saw the tweet that he put out about the.
[19:24] Speaker 2: Car wreck Tiger had in California.
[19:27] Speaker 3: About five years ago?
[19:28] Speaker 2: Yes.
[19:29] Speaker 1: And the big point that he made was that was
[19:33] Speaker 1: not a wreck that you get in Because you fell asleep.
[19:38] Speaker 1: Like the accelerator was down. There are different questions to
[19:44] Speaker 1: ask about what, remember when Junior.
[19:47] Speaker 2: Seau had that car wreck?
[19:50] Speaker 8: Right?
[19:51] Speaker 2: Now, Junior Seau, I.
[19:52] Speaker 1: Think we can safely say, especially considering how things ended
[19:55] Speaker 1: for him, Junior Seau was trying to kill himself. I
[19:57] Speaker 1: am not comfortable saying that Tiger Woods was trying to
[19:59] Speaker 1: kill himself. I'm just telling you that the way that
[20:01] Speaker 1: he described that accident, that was... This is a man
[20:07] Speaker 1: with problems, I guess is what I'm saying. And I'm
[20:09] Speaker 1: not so inclined to chastise people with problems. Now, I
[20:13] Speaker 1: also think that it became clear, and we'll see what
[20:15] Speaker 1: it all shakes out. If Tiger Woods was impaired, he
[20:18] Speaker 1: blew a. 000 on the breathalyzer, which is to say
[20:21] Speaker 1: if he was impaired, it was from pills. And he
[20:24] Speaker 1: refused to take a urine test.
[20:25] Speaker 2: It was from pills.
[20:27] Speaker 1: And I will point this out. I've had multiple people
[20:30] Speaker 1: make this point that I'm about to make.
[20:35] Speaker 2: That they.
[20:37] Speaker 1: from personal experience, would not wish back pain upon their
[20:40] Speaker 1: worst enemy. And that back pain has made them sincerely
[20:45] Speaker 1: think about killing themselves. Like the level of back pain
[20:48] Speaker 1: that we're talking about and all these back surgeries that
[20:50] Speaker 1: he's had. And I didn't realize this, Ryan, that there
[20:52] Speaker 1: is a school of thought where there are questions about
[20:56] Speaker 1: whether back surgery is a scam.
[20:59] Speaker 3: Yes.
[21:01] Speaker 1: Like, whoa, boy, what a terrible scam. What a terrible
[21:03] Speaker 1: con that would be to play on me.
[21:05] Speaker 8: Right.
[21:06] Speaker 3: Right?
[21:06] Speaker 2: Like, oh, my God.
[21:06] Speaker 1: But imagine being lost in everything else, and then you
[21:10] Speaker 1: have all this back pain, which certainly sends you to
[21:14] Speaker 1: taking these pills, because Tiger Woods, he's seeing like he's
[21:17] Speaker 1: too square to, you know, smoke weed.
[21:20] Speaker 3: I mean, you can see it by the way he's
[21:22] Speaker 3: been walking. Yeah. He walks like a seven-year-old football player.
[21:27] Speaker 5: Yes.
[21:28] Speaker 3: Like, he is.
[21:30] Speaker 3: In pain every moment of his life.
[21:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, and so my inclination is not, my inclination about
[21:36] Speaker 1: DUI is typically not to judge as quickly as others.
[21:40] Speaker 1: And I get why people do, but I also think
[21:42] Speaker 1: that some of that judgment or the inclination to do
[21:45] Speaker 1: so has a lot to do with our society's difficulty
[21:49] Speaker 1: figuring out how it actually feels about alcohol.
[21:52] Speaker 4: Right. Right.
[21:53] Speaker 2: I don't need as a non drinker.
[21:55] Speaker 1: I don't need to find these ways to try to
[21:57] Speaker 1: rationalize the presence of alcohol and that when people do
[22:00] Speaker 1: dumb things because they've been using alcohol, it's not the
[22:03] Speaker 1: alcohol's fault.
[22:04] Speaker 2: It's a personal responsibility shit. Right.
[22:06] Speaker 5: Right.
[22:06] Speaker 1: I don't I don't I don't I don't have to
[22:08] Speaker 1: try to square all these ideas at the same time.
[22:10] Speaker 2: I can look at it. And what I can look
[22:12] Speaker 2: at it, though, and say is there are very.
[22:14] Speaker 1: Few people who catch DUIs like outside of Scottsdale, Arizona,
[22:18] Speaker 1: where they just give everybody a DUI. Maricopa County right
[22:23] Speaker 1: but there aren't that many people who are getting DUIs
[22:25] Speaker 1: who don't have a larger problem you know and so
[22:28] Speaker 1: from there to me it's like yes obviously this person
[22:31] Speaker 1: has done something that was selfish they planned poorly everything
[22:34] Speaker 1: else but it's more to it when it gets there
[22:39] Speaker 1: with this I would not be surprised if the answer
[22:42] Speaker 1: was the target was was addicted to pain medication which
[22:45] Speaker 1: would make him like a significant number of people in
[22:49] Speaker 1: this country And I doubt that was something that he
[22:52] Speaker 1: ever wanted to do, if that's how it ended up.
[22:55] Speaker 1: But I think it's very easy for us to understand
[22:57] Speaker 1: how such a thing could happen. I mean, shit, it
[23:00] Speaker 1: happened to Prince, you know, like it's happened to so
[23:03] Speaker 1: many people, you know, who at Prince had been a
[23:05] Speaker 1: basic teetotaler basically forever up until that point. Like these
[23:10] Speaker 1: things get people. and they get a hold of him,
[23:12] Speaker 1: and they can even get a hold of Tiger Woods.
[23:14] Speaker 1: And then if it gets a hold of him, and
[23:16] Speaker 1: then we talk about all the other compounding factors that
[23:18] Speaker 1: come with it, man, I just came away from that
[23:21] Speaker 1: feeling bad for him.
[23:26] Speaker 2: So I don't know.
[23:27] Speaker 1: I guess I'm not saying that as any sort of
[23:29] Speaker 1: statement against anybody that views this situation judgmentally. At least
[23:33] Speaker 1: that's not what I want to do because I know
[23:35] Speaker 1: how people can reach that conclusion. But I do think
[23:38] Speaker 1: it's worth noting or worth looking at him is that
[23:40] Speaker 1: even though this is a larger than life figure, this
[23:43] Speaker 1: is to me a man who is clearly in physical,
[23:49] Speaker 1: some combination of physical, mental and emotional pain. And I
[23:52] Speaker 1: think that this is a reflection of that more than
[23:54] Speaker 1: it is anything else. It's time to slide your glass

[28:31] Speaker 2: news and information of the day. No need for the
[28:33] Speaker 2: social media feeds.
[28:35] Speaker 3: We got you.
[28:36] Speaker 4: Now, if you haven't heard.
[28:39] Speaker 3: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, Will Wade's going
[28:41] Speaker 3: to be the new basketball coach at LSU. He returns
[28:44] Speaker 3: after spending 2017 to 2022 being, let's call it dismiss
[28:49] Speaker 3: and disgrace, having two quick stops at McNeese State and
[28:53] Speaker 3: NC State. In the meantime, Bo, what was your reaction
[28:56] Speaker 3: to the story?
[28:57] Speaker 1: So this is like one of them things where.
[29:01] Speaker 1: Like, if he was in the reefer business, how, like,
[29:03] Speaker 1: in New York, with the reefer business, they giving jobs
[29:06] Speaker 1: to all the people who they busted for reefer.
[29:09] Speaker 2: Offenses back in the day.
[29:10] Speaker 1: It's kind of like an equity situation.
[29:13] Speaker 8: Right.
[29:14] Speaker 1: All those guys that were caught up in that scandal
[29:17] Speaker 1: that Will Wade got caught up in.
[29:18] Speaker 3: Rick Pitino.
[29:19] Speaker 2: Rick Pitino back at St.
[29:21] Speaker 4: John's.
[29:22] Speaker 1: Will Wade got himself back up to NC State. Like,
[29:25] Speaker 1: that would count as the back portion.
[29:29] Speaker 2: What's my man's name? Sean Miller? He is at Texas.
[29:33] Speaker 2: He went back to Xavier. He took a step down.
[29:35] Speaker 2: But then after the world changed, everybody was kind of like, eh,
[29:38] Speaker 2: what are we talking about here?
[29:40] Speaker 5: Right?
[29:40] Speaker 1: Now, is that going to apply to those assistants? All
[29:44] Speaker 1: those black guys?
[29:46] Speaker 2: We will see.
[29:47] Speaker 1: But for those of you who don't know, Will Wade
[29:48] Speaker 1: was a coach at LSU, but he got caught on
[29:50] Speaker 1: FBI wiretaps talking about the, quote, strong-ass offer, unquote, that
[29:55] Speaker 1: he had made to some player. LSU had to let
[29:58] Speaker 1: him go. He was kind of lost in the hinterlands.
[30:00] Speaker 1: And then he got a job at McNeese state, which
[30:02] Speaker 1: by the way, five years of not working, go work
[30:05] Speaker 1: at McNeese state makes perfect sense, right? Like, I think
[30:07] Speaker 1: that's a reasonable, you've learned your lesson and he was
[30:12] Speaker 1: playing the game. Like he wasn't doing anything that jumped
[30:15] Speaker 1: out as being beyond the pale of what is actually
[30:17] Speaker 1: accepted behavior there. But anyway, he's there. Then he gets
[30:22] Speaker 1: the job at NC state and see NC state. always
[30:25] Speaker 1: in a tricky position, man, because I.
[30:27] Speaker 2: Mean, Ryan, you're an LSU guy. You watch it. He
[30:31] Speaker 2: appears to be a good coach. Is that fair to say?
[30:32] Speaker 7: Yes. Yes.
[30:33] Speaker 3: He is certainly a better coach than they've had in
[30:35] Speaker 3: a long time.
[30:36] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
[30:36] Speaker 3: The best coach they've had. Probably since Dale. Yeah. Post Dale.
[30:41] Speaker 2: Okay. So I mean, that's right. You guys had John
[30:44] Speaker 2: Brady was the immediate post.
[30:45] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[30:46] Speaker 5: Higher.
[30:47] Speaker 1: Okay.
[30:47] Speaker 2: Dale Brown's a very good man.
[30:51] Speaker 1: So I'm not going to say what I was just
[30:52] Speaker 1: about to say, but anyway, um, So NC State gets
[30:56] Speaker 1: real weight. Man, this dude, he taking pictures that are
[31:02] Speaker 1: remakes of Jim Valvano stuff and all of this. And
[31:06] Speaker 1: NC State's a really hard job. I'm trying to say
[31:10] Speaker 1: this without joking on them, and it's always so easy
[31:13] Speaker 1: to do.
[31:14] Speaker 3: I understand this is a feat of self-control for you.
[31:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but no, I mean, they're 20 minutes away
[31:19] Speaker 1: from Carolina and 20 minutes away from Duke.
[31:21] Speaker 2: And look, it.
[31:23] Speaker 1: Used to be on par with those schools. They went
[31:27] Speaker 1: on probation at the absolute worst time, which was when
[31:29] Speaker 1: the explosion of cable television changed college basketball. And that's
[31:33] Speaker 1: when they got in trouble and they fell behind And
[31:35] Speaker 1: they never caught up and they just want to be better.
[31:38] Speaker 4: Right.
[31:38] Speaker 1: I don't think their fans are nearly as unrealistic as
[31:41] Speaker 1: people make them out to be. They just want to
[31:43] Speaker 1: be better. They're like, there's no explanation for why we
[31:45] Speaker 1: can't be better. All of those things totally get it.
[31:49] Speaker 1: And they had Will Wade and it was looking for
[31:53] Speaker 1: a while like, guys, I think Will.
[31:55] Speaker 2: Wade is going to go back to LSU. Right.
[31:57] Speaker 1: And apparently the only people who didn't know this were
[31:59] Speaker 1: the people at NC State in part because Will Wade
[32:02] Speaker 1: at every turn was telling them he's not going to
[32:05] Speaker 1: go back to LSU.
[32:06] Speaker 2: And then LSU had already hired the athletic.
[32:11] Speaker 1: Was it already hired the president from McNeese State and
[32:13] Speaker 1: then hired the athletic director?
[32:15] Speaker 3: I'm lost in the deals, but clearly went and got
[32:18] Speaker 3: his guy from McNeese State. Yes.
[32:20] Speaker 2: Was that the president or the AD?
[32:22] Speaker 3: The AD.
[32:22] Speaker 1: Okay, so they went and got the AD, and I
[32:24] Speaker 1: think the president also came from McNeese.
[32:27] Speaker 8: Yeah.
[32:27] Speaker 2: Everybody had a connection to Will Wade, is my point.
[32:30] Speaker 1: And then Will Wade, after apparently the day before telling
[32:34] Speaker 1: the AD and ADC State, just talking about what they
[32:37] Speaker 1: were going to do, then his agent let him know
[32:41] Speaker 1: that he was leaving, and he went back to LSU.
[32:43] Speaker 3: Send me an email. Will Wade's not coming back.
[32:45] Speaker 1: And there were reports for days, Will Wade's going to
[32:49] Speaker 1: go to LSU.
[32:50] Speaker 2: The thing was, at that time, LSU had a coach.
[32:54] Speaker 1: Yeah. They had not fired their coach yet. And everybody
[32:59] Speaker 1: knew that this was going to happen. And then the
[33:02] Speaker 1: internet got to sleuthing. And this is the most amazing one.
[33:06] Speaker 1: There's reason to believe that Will Wade got under contract
[33:12] Speaker 1: on a house. February 23rd.
[33:16] Speaker 4: Yes.
[33:17] Speaker 3: This is peak college message board stuff.
[33:22] Speaker 1: But he bought the house.
[33:28] Speaker 2: He bought a house.
[33:30] Speaker 1: I'm sorry. A house in Baton Rouge. I didn't specify
[33:35] Speaker 1: that part. NC State is in Raleigh, North Carolina. He
[33:40] Speaker 1: put on the house on February 23rd.
[33:45] Speaker 3: Over a month ago.
[33:46] Speaker 2: Over a month ago.
[33:47] Speaker 1: Over a month ago, he bought a house. And I
[33:51] Speaker 1: want to look at this with my own eyes. And
[33:53] Speaker 1: this is exactly how it went, Ryan. Two, three, four, five, six.
[33:59] Speaker 2: After that, NC State went one and six.
[34:02] Speaker 3: So the players clearly knew.
[34:03] Speaker 1: And not just one and six. They lost by 29
[34:07] Speaker 1: to Virginia. They lost to an awful Notre Dame team.
[34:15] Speaker 1: They lost by 29 to Duke. They lost to, okay,
[34:22] Speaker 1: Stanford wasn't awful, but they only lost to them by
[34:24] Speaker 1: one point.
[34:25] Speaker 2: Way to go. They beat Pitt. Good job.
[34:28] Speaker 1: And then they lost to Virginia, and then they got
[34:30] Speaker 1: to the first four, and then they lost again. Coincidentally,
[34:34] Speaker 1: their coach. By the way, this is coming off of
[34:37] Speaker 1: beating the brakes off Carolina. And then coincidentally, it seems
[34:42] Speaker 1: their coach bought a house.
[34:44] Speaker 2: In Baton Rouge. In Baton Rouge.
[34:47] Speaker 1: LSU is looking... And look, I don't blame LSU on
[34:49] Speaker 1: the Lane Kiffin thing. I don't think they did anything wrong.
[34:52] Speaker 1: But they did hire Lane Kiffin.
[34:54] Speaker 3: You're going to have... Speaking of something we mentioned earlier
[34:56] Speaker 3: in the program, you're going to have Lane Kiffin, Kim Mulkey,
[34:58] Speaker 3: and Will Wade in the same building.
[35:00] Speaker 1: This is LSU coaching right here. You guys have decided
[35:04] Speaker 1: to be the most obnoxious program in America. Which, by
[35:07] Speaker 1: the way, can be fun. Here's the thing I'd say, though.
[35:11] Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin has to win.
[35:13] Speaker 3: Yes.
[35:13] Speaker 1: Will Wade simply needs to put forth a respectable product.
[35:18] Speaker 3: Correct. Correct. Like, Will Wade has to make the tournament
[35:22] Speaker 3: every couple of years.
[35:23] Speaker 1: Honestly, the demands of being a basketball coach in the
[35:26] Speaker 1: SEC are not nearly as bad as they used to
[35:29] Speaker 1: be because it used to be important to have a
[35:31] Speaker 1: good basketball team so that you could recruit.
[35:34] Speaker 2: Now you just need to pay them.
[35:37] Speaker 1: It don't matter if your basketball team any good or
[35:38] Speaker 1: anybody's at the back, you know, cause they take them
[35:40] Speaker 1: to basketball games on the visit.
[35:41] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[35:42] Speaker 1: So like Nick Saban was like, Hey man, we got
[35:43] Speaker 1: to get Alabama basketball back to what it used to be.
[35:45] Speaker 1: We need to have a building that's popping. When we
[35:48] Speaker 1: take the people, man, they like, how about we just
[35:50] Speaker 1: give them some money?
[35:51] Speaker 2: What'd you think of that?
[35:53] Speaker 3: You know, how you get that money by having a
[35:55] Speaker 3: good football team.
[35:56] Speaker 2: That's it. There we go.
[35:58] Speaker 3: All right. Let's move on to the NFL. John 49ers
[36:02] Speaker 3: general manager, John Winch has had to come out and,
[36:06] Speaker 3: you know, debunk the rumors about the substation near the
[36:10] Speaker 3: prac facility, uh, came out and said it was a
[36:13] Speaker 3: big nothing burger. However, they have provided tangible steps to
[36:17] Speaker 3: reduce future injuries. They've hired more PT on their staff,
[36:22] Speaker 3: responding to, uh, bad reports from report cards from the
[36:25] Speaker 3: NFL PA. But what was your reaction to this news?
[36:29] Speaker 1: So I got to say it is about the, the, the,
[36:32] Speaker 1: the substation thing. Cause for people who don't know, there's a,
[36:35] Speaker 1: There's a thought that there's some kind of electrical substation
[36:38] Speaker 1: that's near the 49ers training facility and that the internet
[36:42] Speaker 1: has long said that that's the reason why their players
[36:45] Speaker 1: keep getting hurt so much.
[36:47] Speaker 2: It's because it weakens their bones.
[36:49] Speaker 3: People are frightened of Bluetooth and these Wi-Fi signals. That's
[36:55] Speaker 3: not just these... Christian McCaffrey was talking about he has
[36:59] Speaker 3: a switch in his house that turns the Wi-Fi off
[37:01] Speaker 3: at night. He's one of the... You know.
[37:05] Speaker 3: They clearly had to get ahead of it because it
[37:07] Speaker 3: got to the point where the players started to believe it.
[37:09] Speaker 8: Right.
[37:09] Speaker 2: But I think this is the other part.
[37:13] Speaker 1: Your players get hurt so much that people are looking
[37:19] Speaker 1: outside for answers.
[37:22] Speaker 2: That's my question.
[37:23] Speaker 1: Like, what is it about you guys where your guys
[37:27] Speaker 1: seem to get hurt?
[37:28] Speaker 2: And it's anecdotal.
[37:29] Speaker 1: Like, I haven't looked and done the test, you know,
[37:31] Speaker 1: done any... like quantitative testing on injuries. But it feels
[37:34] Speaker 1: like their guys are always hurt in a league where
[37:37] Speaker 1: everybody else is always hurt too. But it really feels
[37:39] Speaker 1: like their guys are always hurt. So part of this
[37:44] Speaker 1: is people don't know what to believe on the internet
[37:46] Speaker 1: because I have received a few, is this real question
[37:49] Speaker 1: mark texts about that one. But also, and I say
[37:54] Speaker 1: this as a person with like, people ask me, but
[37:56] Speaker 1: I got pretty good powers of discernment. I can't imagine
[37:59] Speaker 1: what it's like for kids that have grown up in
[38:00] Speaker 1: this world of just being so inundated with information that
[38:03] Speaker 1: they have no idea how to tell, right?
[38:05] Speaker 2: Like people who grow up in it. That's part of it.
[38:09] Speaker 1: But the other part is y'all need to do something
[38:11] Speaker 1: about the fact that people get hurt so bad, so
[38:13] Speaker 1: much for your team that people need explanations.
[38:16] Speaker 4: Right.
[38:16] Speaker 3: Like, you know, if people were like, and this is
[38:18] Speaker 3: a story that was like started out as like a fun,
[38:20] Speaker 3: silly thing in the middle of the season when some
[38:23] Speaker 3: of these injuries started to pile up and has now
[38:24] Speaker 3: gotten to the point where John Lynch is having to
[38:27] Speaker 3: have press comp answer press conferences about it in March.
[38:29] Speaker 5: Yes.
[38:30] Speaker 3: Yes.
[38:30] Speaker 2: Like this is sigh.
[38:34] Speaker 3: Right. Yes. It's there's a lot. It's a lot. It's
[38:36] Speaker 3: a football story. It's an internet story. There is a
[38:39] Speaker 3: lot going on there. And finally, it turns out that, uh,
[38:43] Speaker 3: Attending an HBCU might be beneficial for your health. A
[38:48] Speaker 3: study sampled nearly 2,000 black adults who attended college between
[38:52] Speaker 3: 1940 and 1980, 35 attended an HBCU, and those who
[38:57] Speaker 3: attended one had better cognition amongst all three of those
[39:03] Speaker 3: different time periods. HBCU black adults who attended an HBCU
[39:07] Speaker 3: had better memory and better cognitive function than those who
[39:11] Speaker 3: attended a PWI. Bo, what was your reaction to this news?
[39:15] Speaker 1: Hey, man, let me tell you something. After I graduated
[39:17] Speaker 1: from Clark, Atlanta, wound up going to graduate school in Claremont, California.
[39:22] Speaker 1: I had never heard of Claremont, California before when I
[39:24] Speaker 1: got there. But I got there, and it was a consortium.
[39:27] Speaker 1: I was a graduate school, but then a consortium of
[39:30] Speaker 1: undergraduate institutions. And I'm going to just tell you, man,
[39:35] Speaker 1: I got off that plane. I stayed in the hotel.
[39:38] Speaker 1: I went to, we were doing like an orientation for
[39:44] Speaker 1: my program. And I just remember being there And I
[39:50] Speaker 1: was surrounded by, generally speaking, whiteness in a way that
[39:54] Speaker 1: I had not in a very long time. And just
[39:56] Speaker 1: kind of the vibes and the way I felt people
[39:58] Speaker 1: looking at me. And I just remember I left and
[40:01] Speaker 1: I walked out and I saw a sign in front
[40:03] Speaker 1: of a house. It said the Office of Black Student Affairs.
[40:05] Speaker 1: I walked in there and they said, can I help you?
[40:07] Speaker 1: And I was like, it just felt like I need
[40:08] Speaker 1: to be here right now. You understand what I'm saying?
[40:10] Speaker 1: I spent two years there and I was around, like
[40:13] Speaker 1: I was young enough still, like kicking with the undergrads.
[40:15] Speaker 1: And I'm looking at them and I'm like, You guys
[40:18] Speaker 1: did this on purpose, huh? Like it was so different
[40:21] Speaker 1: than the world I had spent the previous four years in.
[40:24] Speaker 1: And it was very clear to me that we had
[40:26] Speaker 1: a much better time over there than they were having there.
[40:31] Speaker 1: Then when I came to North Carolina and I was
[40:33] Speaker 1: around those schools and I saw a level of alcohol
[40:37] Speaker 1: consumption that I had never seen before when I got
[40:40] Speaker 1: around those schools. I say all that to say I
[40:43] Speaker 1: am not surprised at all that those numbers work out
[40:46] Speaker 1: that way, because it really seemed like my black friends
[40:49] Speaker 1: who went to white schools had a whole lot more
[40:52] Speaker 1: on their minds and a lot more to deal with
[40:54] Speaker 1: than me and mine that was over here at these
[40:57] Speaker 1: black schools. Only to, by the way, typically end up
[41:00] Speaker 1: with maybe similar outcomes, not necessarily superior.
[41:04] Speaker 2: So, no, it does not.
[41:06] Speaker 1: It does not surprise me. Those schools be a dead
[41:08] Speaker 1: press had a song about it. But them schools be
[41:10] Speaker 1: driving y'all crazy. Keep up the fight.
[41:13] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Keep hoping live. I hear you.
[41:20] Speaker 3: All right, Bo. A lot of good voicemails this week.
[41:26] Speaker 3: Start off with a favorite topic of the show.
[41:30] Speaker 5: Hey, Bomani Jones. Long-time listener. Just calling in. Just wrapped
[41:35] Speaker 5: up the episode with Van Latham.
[41:38] Speaker 9: It is almost a little reassuring to hear that our
[41:43] Speaker 9: good friend Joel Anderson is indeed the world's biggest hater.
[41:47] Speaker 5: Know some haters, but, you know, that story Van Lazen told,
[41:50] Speaker 5: and I was like, man, this dude, no money ain't
[41:53] Speaker 5: just ripping on him. He's just a born hater, motivated
[41:56] Speaker 5: out of spite. I'm here for that 100-meter dash, that 40,
[42:01] Speaker 5: whatever I want to do. I think it would be
[42:03] Speaker 5: a great idea.
[42:03] Speaker 9: Reminds me of the Ben Johnson... Don Van Bailey situation.
[42:11] Speaker 5: He's giving me Ben Johnson vibes. I feel if he's losing,
[42:14] Speaker 5: he's about to pull up, say his hammy hurts and whatnot. But,
[42:18] Speaker 5: you know, I think it's vindication for you.
[42:20] Speaker 3: Joel is a hater.
[42:22] Speaker 5: We now know it. It has been confirmed across the world.
[42:26] Speaker 5: Love the show. Keep hating. Keep doing your thing. Have
[42:30] Speaker 5: a good day, man.
[42:33] Speaker 1: Yo, so I appreciate this, but I need you to
[42:36] Speaker 1: understand something. First of all, I need Joel to understand.
[42:38] Speaker 1: Ryan picked that, so you don't blame that on me.
[42:40] Speaker 1: Number two, I need... Joel really believes that it's my fault. Like,
[42:49] Speaker 1: he truly believes that if not for me.
[42:54] Speaker 3: Van confirmed this independently. We did not ask.
[42:56] Speaker 2: Right, right. Like, everything... Joel took a video this weekend.
[43:01] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[43:02] Speaker 2: Did you see it?
[43:02] Speaker 3: Yes.
[43:04] Speaker 2: Okay, for those of you who did not see this.
[43:09] Speaker 1: Because they've been coming at Joel and they've been coming
[43:11] Speaker 1: at me about this Jay-Z thing, right? I'm getting called
[43:14] Speaker 1: all kinds of Uncle Tom and fake black man and.
[43:16] Speaker 2: All of this stuff, right? Like, it is wild.
[43:20] Speaker 1: But anyway, they've been coming at Joel, too, because Joel
[43:22] Speaker 1: had some similar thoughts to the thoughts that I had.
[43:26] Speaker 1: They had Joel so heated. that Joel was in the
[43:29] Speaker 1: front seat of his car, ashy, and he said he
[43:33] Speaker 1: was ashy.
[43:33] Speaker 3: With the baby in the back.
[43:35] Speaker 1: No, the baby wasn't in the back. The baby was
[43:37] Speaker 1: in his lap. And he rolled for five minutes.
[43:44] Speaker 2: And at the.
[43:45] Speaker 1: Top of it, you know, the stereotypes that my friends,
[43:49] Speaker 1: Bobani Jones and Van Lathan, have been stereotypes about him.
[43:55] Speaker 1: Just think about that for a moment.
[43:57] Speaker 2: A stereotype about one man.
[44:00] Speaker 1: These stereotypes that Beaumont Jones and Van Lathan saying about
[44:03] Speaker 1: me about how I, you know, can't let us, you know,
[44:06] Speaker 1: I got to respond to every slight, but, and then
[44:10] Speaker 1: he said he just had to do it. And by
[44:12] Speaker 1: the way, all his points were valid. I agreed with
[44:15] Speaker 1: every word that he had to say. But he says
[44:23] Speaker 1: it's my fault.
[44:24] Speaker 3: I will say I love Joel. I love Joel in
[44:27] Speaker 3: every pod he's on.
[44:28] Speaker 2: You did do it.
[44:30] Speaker 3: Joel responding his critics. That's the podcast I enjoy the most.
[44:36] Speaker 3: Joel going, I hate to make this comparison because it's
[44:39] Speaker 3: going to make him very mad. Full Stephen A.
[44:43] Speaker 2: Yo, I hadn't thought about this.
[44:46] Speaker 1: We need to send Joel one of them suits and
[44:49] Speaker 1: a stack of funny money so that he can come
[44:51] Speaker 1: out here and start throwing money on the ground when.
[44:55] Speaker 3: The time comes. That's my favorite podcast that Joel's on.
[44:58] Speaker 2: That's including this one.
[45:00] Speaker 1: Maybe I should do that once or twice to entertain
[45:02] Speaker 1: the fans or something, right?
[45:03] Speaker 2: Nah, I won't.
[45:08] Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
[45:10] Speaker 8: Hey, Bomani. This is Edmund in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm a
[45:13] Speaker 8: fifth grade teacher and I watch my students engage in
[45:17] Speaker 8: this horrible youth sports culture. And I was hanging with
[45:22] Speaker 8: a friend of mine in Denver.
[45:23] Speaker 5: This past weekend.
[45:24] Speaker 8: His sister is a big time player in wealth management
[45:28] Speaker 8: in Denver.
[45:29] Speaker 5: And she was explaining to.
[45:30] Speaker 8: Me that private equity is all over youth sports right now,
[45:34] Speaker 8: investing into youth sports. And I just want to kind
[45:37] Speaker 8: of hear your opinions on that. It did not surprise
[45:40] Speaker 8: me at all because, as you said on the podcast
[45:43] Speaker 8: many times, what has private equity made better? Anyway, just
[45:49] Speaker 8: love to hear what you think about it. Big fan
[45:50] Speaker 8: of the show. See you.
[45:53] Speaker 1: My buddy Jay Caspian Kang of The New Yorker wrote
[45:57] Speaker 1: a very interesting piece about this last June.
[46:00] Speaker 3: I think he has a book coming out.
[46:01] Speaker 2: Yeah, as I say, if I'm not mistaken.
[46:03] Speaker 1: He is writing a book about this very topic. I
[46:06] Speaker 1: think my thoughts on this are exactly what you would
[46:08] Speaker 1: think that my thoughts were on this, that it's bad.
[46:12] Speaker 1: But we're also what we're also seeing is I mean,
[46:15] Speaker 1: we see this playing out now. These games are being
[46:17] Speaker 1: played by middle class and upper middle class kids more
[46:21] Speaker 1: so like sports is sports will not long be a
[46:25] Speaker 1: way for people to flip their economic fortunes in this
[46:28] Speaker 1: country as they have been previously. And I think this
[46:32] Speaker 1: becomes a much more acute situation now that there's money
[46:35] Speaker 1: to be made in college. Like, there is room to
[46:37] Speaker 1: create what is actually and truly generational wealth for a
[46:41] Speaker 1: lot of people on a level playing field because of
[46:43] Speaker 1: the money that's now there for playing college sports.
[46:46] Speaker 2: But the same.
[46:47] Speaker 1: People that always got the money trying to figure out
[46:49] Speaker 1: ways to keep it and to take it from other
[46:51] Speaker 1: people now aren't there.
[46:53] Speaker 3: Alright, here's our next one.
[46:54] Speaker 4: What's going on, Bo? I... Grew up playing soccer, attended
[47:02] Speaker 4: a Division I school in the Carolinas in the late 2010s.
[47:08] Speaker 4: College basketball was never top of my radar. My freshman
[47:13] Speaker 4: year in college was 2013. Duke had a team that
[47:20] Speaker 4: I was drawn towards, and I believe the starting five
[47:24] Speaker 4: was all black, and I believe that year they won
[47:28] Speaker 4: the national championship. I've never really had a team to
[47:33] Speaker 4: pull for. I liked that Duke team. I tend to
[47:38] Speaker 4: pay attention to them. I understand, historically, that's not really
[47:43] Speaker 4: the team that I should ride with.
[47:48] Speaker 3: Should I feel bad.
[47:49] Speaker 4: Rooting for this Duke team?
[47:51] Speaker 2: Yes!
[47:53] Speaker 4: To win the National Championship?
[47:56] Speaker 5: Hell yeah!
[47:57] Speaker 4: Please let me know if I'm entirely off-base here.
[48:01] Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
[48:02] Speaker 1: So what was it, the 99 team he said he
[48:04] Speaker 1: rooted for before or the 2015?
[48:05] Speaker 3: I think it's the 2015 team.
[48:07] Speaker 2: They had Grayson fucking Allen. I understand they're starting fouls off.
[48:12] Speaker 1: Justice Winslow kicking people in the nuts.
[48:17] Speaker 2: He was doing something real dookie. Grayson Allen hadn't even
[48:20] Speaker 2: got his foot in under him yet. To become that guy.
[48:25] Speaker 7: Yes, yes.
[48:26] Speaker 1: The answer to your question is there's something wrong with it,
[48:28] Speaker 1: but luckily the point is moot because they lost. They
[48:32] Speaker 1: lost when White Braylon frantically heaved a three-pointer from the
[48:36] Speaker 1: logo and it went straight through your heart.
[48:38] Speaker 2: Because Lil Boozer. I have somebody hit me on the text.
[48:44] Speaker 2: Booze and lose, baby. Booze and lose.
[48:48] Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
[48:50] Speaker 7: Yo, Bomani, this is Nestor calling you from Maryland. So
[48:55] Speaker 7: I live real close to D.C., about 15 minutes away.
[48:58] Speaker 7: But this boy Dewey, he's also from Maryland, but he's
[49:01] Speaker 7: from Charles County, Maryland. So what you need to know
[49:04] Speaker 7: about Charles County is people that are close to D.C.,
[49:08] Speaker 7: we say we need to catch a flight out to
[49:10] Speaker 7: Charles County. Like, it's pretty far away. But my boy,
[49:15] Speaker 7: he knew Dewey. And so this whole Dewey situation, you know, got, uh,
[49:22] Speaker 7: got cracking. And so me and my boys, the group chat,
[49:25] Speaker 7: we were like, yo, this boy's from Maryland.
[49:27] Speaker 4: This is crazy.
[49:28] Speaker 8: This is that.
[49:30] Speaker 7: And so, you know, I think that's something you didn't
[49:33] Speaker 7: touch on that needs to be kind of investigated is
[49:37] Speaker 7: how did they handcuff my boy? And so one of
[49:40] Speaker 7: my boys said, yo, I mean, they must have wrapped
[49:44] Speaker 7: him up. You know what I mean? Like a little
[49:46] Speaker 7: burrito type because you can't really put handcuffs on that boy.
[49:50] Speaker 7: And another person said, yo, I mean, they caught him
[49:54] Speaker 7: red-handed apparently. But all jokes aside, what's really interesting is
[50:01] Speaker 7: one of my homies, the homie that lives in Charles County,
[50:04] Speaker 7: told us that Steve Dewey was part– of his bowling league.
[50:11] Speaker 7: So not only was this quadruple amputee laying the bags,
[50:19] Speaker 7: murdering people, but apparently he could also do a little
[50:24] Speaker 7: bit of bowling.
[50:26] Speaker 5: Love the show.
[50:27] Speaker 4: Peace.
[50:31] Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. Dewey sounds like legitimately inspirational. If
[50:39] Speaker 1: Dewey could have just held it in the road. Now
[50:42] Speaker 1: I understand why people are writing articles about him. Y'all
[50:45] Speaker 1: keep talking about Jay-Z, talking about I will not lose,
[50:48] Speaker 1: won't let nothing stop him, look where he came.
[50:50] Speaker 2: That boy Dewey.
[50:54] Speaker 3: Are you saying Dewey pulled himself up by his own bootstraps?
[50:59] Speaker 4: Yes.
[51:01] Speaker 2: Yes, I am. That's America right there.
[51:04] Speaker 1: Let me tell you what, I guarantee you Dewey wouldn't
[51:07] Speaker 1: do it either. Dewey wouldn't vote for no goddamn Democrats.
[51:10] Speaker 1: I'll tell you that right now. Dewey got himself where
[51:13] Speaker 1: he was from how he did and all this stuff.
[51:16] Speaker 2: Let me tell you who ain't trying to hear none
[51:17] Speaker 2: of your excuses. Dewey. Think how mad Dewey was when
[51:22] Speaker 2: they wouldn't help him with the Biden.
[51:23] Speaker 1: He's like, fine, I'll do it myself. Like I do
[51:25] Speaker 1: everything else. Because I do everything. You don't do everything,
[51:30] Speaker 1: but I do.
[51:32] Speaker 3: You're saying Dewey wasn't asking for a handout?
[51:34] Speaker 2: I'm not going to break. I'm not going to break.
[51:41] Speaker 3: I mean, if he was still out there, are you
[51:43] Speaker 3: not concerned that he would be armed and dangerous?
[51:47] Speaker 2: He would be dangerous. He sure would.
[51:50] Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
[51:52] Speaker 2: Good job, though. Nice try.
[51:54] Speaker 6: Hey, Bo, how's it going? This is Jason from Vegas.
[51:58] Speaker 6: Long time listener. Ever since you got on Around the Horn,
[52:00] Speaker 6: I've been following you your content all over the place.
[52:05] Speaker 6: You know, I love what you're doing.
[52:06] Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
[52:07] Speaker 6: So I'm calling because of funny names. So I work
[52:10] Speaker 6: in a casino as a supervisor and I had these
[52:14] Speaker 6: two women sit down on my table, one black, one white,
[52:17] Speaker 6: and they both handed me their player cards. Now, well,
[52:20] Speaker 6: the player cards are sitting on the table. So I
[52:25] Speaker 6: go to swipe them in. And as I hand the
[52:27] Speaker 6: cards back to them, I hand the card to the
[52:31] Speaker 6: white girl and Martha. I hand the card to.
[52:34] Speaker 5: The black girl, Kenesha.
[52:37] Speaker 6: They look at me and they tell me, oh, you
[52:39] Speaker 6: gave us the wrong cards. And I was like, excuse me?
[52:43] Speaker 5: Yes.
[52:44] Speaker 6: This white girl's name was Kenesha. K-U-N-E-S-H-A. Kenesha. That was
[52:52] Speaker 6: one that drew me. I had another instance, real quick,
[52:56] Speaker 6: make it fast, where I had another little white girl
[52:58] Speaker 6: sit down on the game. She handed me her player's card.
[53:02] Speaker 6: The name on the card was L-A-C-R-E-I-A. And I'm sitting
[53:07] Speaker 6: here looking at this name like, I know this name,
[53:09] Speaker 6: but I think it is. And I asked her, and
[53:11] Speaker 6: I was like, Miss, how do I say your name?
[53:14] Speaker 6: And she looked me in the face and she said,
[53:16] Speaker 6: my name is Lucretia. And I just started laughing, Bo.
[53:20] Speaker 6: I couldn't get over it. And her boyfriend looked at
[53:21] Speaker 6: me and he's like, what's so funny? I was like,
[53:24] Speaker 6: because that's a very black name for a very white girl.
[53:27] Speaker 8: Anyway, Bo, love what you do.
[53:28] Speaker 6: Appreciate it. Keep doing your thing.
[53:30] Speaker 9: Thanks.
[53:30] Speaker 2: First of all, boyfriend, why are you asking questions you
[53:33] Speaker 2: know the answer to?
[53:34] Speaker 3: Do I just say that hasn't come up before?
[53:36] Speaker 1: You did the same thing, man. I don't remember if
[53:39] Speaker 1: I told you about this one. One of my partners,
[53:42] Speaker 1: he might be listening. We never got around to talking
[53:44] Speaker 1: about it.
[53:45] Speaker 2: But we was out one night. I was out somewhere.
[53:47] Speaker 2: And he was with this girl. And I hadn't met
[53:50] Speaker 2: her before. And he introduced me to her. And he
[53:55] Speaker 2: was like, hey, this is Beaumont. And she goes, hi.
[53:59] Speaker 2: I'm Lakeisha. And I'm like, I'm sorry, what did you say? Lakeisha. Oh,
[54:08] Speaker 2: nice to meet you.
[54:10] Speaker 1: But that what did you say was the most sincere
[54:12] Speaker 1: thing I'd ever said in my.
[54:13] Speaker 2: Life because there wasn't no way. Wasn't no way. And
[54:17] Speaker 2: I'm like, damn, I bet you go through this every time. Right?
[54:21] Speaker 3: This has to come up regularly.
[54:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You understand what time it is here. You
[54:28] Speaker 2: know what I'm saying? Like, wow. What a time. What
[54:34] Speaker 2: a time.
