Bomani Jones is joined by ESPN’s Michael Collins to look back at the Tiger Slam and explain why Tiger Woods’ 2000-2001 run felt different from anything golf had ever seen. They break down Tiger’s historic 15-shot win at Pebble Beach, his domination at St. Andrews, the pressure of the 2001 Masters, and why that stretch made the GOAT case for Tiger in a way stats alone can’t capture. [0:01] Speaker 1: Wave.
[0:04] Speaker 2: Hey, this week's episode is about the Tiger Slam of
[0:08] Speaker 2: 2000 into 2001, when Tiger Woods won all those majors
[0:11] Speaker 2: in a row. We recorded this weeks before you are
[0:15] Speaker 2: going to see it, which is to say before he
[0:18] Speaker 2: was arrested for DUI. So we didn't know about that
[0:22] Speaker 2: at the time. Thought you should know that first. Ladies
[0:33] Speaker 2: and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:37] Speaker 2: My name is Beaumontee Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:39] Speaker 2: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:43] Speaker 2: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:45] Speaker 2: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:48] Speaker 2: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesday. And today we
[0:53] Speaker 2: are going to talk about the legendary Tiger Slam of
[0:57] Speaker 2: 2000 and 2001. And joining us, is our old friend,
[1:01] Speaker 2: check him out, at ESPN, America's caddy, himself, Michael Collins.
[1:06] Speaker 1: What's going on?
[1:07] Speaker 3: Man, it's been way too long, my friend. Way, way
[1:10] Speaker 3: too long.
[1:10] Speaker 2: Dude, it's been too long, and I still look back
[1:13] Speaker 2: on the first time my buddy Shannon booked you for
[1:16] Speaker 2: the right time when it was a radio show, and
[1:18] Speaker 2: he was like, we got a Michael Collins on.
[1:19] Speaker 1: I was like, okay. And he's like, he works at
[1:22] Speaker 1: ESPN Golf. I was like, okay. He's like, he is
[1:25] Speaker 1: a former caddy. I'm like, okay. He goes, Andy is black.
[1:30] Speaker 1: And I say, oh, what?
[1:34] Speaker 3: Okay.
[1:35] Speaker 2: It was so funny because he built the action up
[1:38] Speaker 2: and I am sure he did it on purpose, but
[1:40] Speaker 2: he did it in a non-comedic way.
[1:42] Speaker 1: And then it was like, okay, cool.
[1:43] Speaker 2: And then next thing I know, you tell the stories
[1:46] Speaker 2: about it wasn't Chamblee that you asked if he wanted
[1:48] Speaker 2: to fight. It was somebody else that you asked. No, well,
[1:51] Speaker 2: I think you told me about somebody you wanted to fight,
[1:53] Speaker 2: and I thought it was Chamblee because I had seen
[1:55] Speaker 2: the story, and you told me it was actually somebody
[1:58] Speaker 2: else that you had invited to fight.
[2:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, well, that was Daniel Chopra, the guy when I
[2:03] Speaker 3: was caddying for Daniel Chopra. That's what you're remembering there, too. Yeah,
[2:08] Speaker 3: it was crazy times, man. Crazy times.
[2:12] Speaker 1: You want to go?
[2:13] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it was just one of those crazy moments,
[2:19] Speaker 3: Where it's like, I didn't know what was wrong. And
[2:22] Speaker 3: he thought something that was happening that actually wasn't happening.
[2:26] Speaker 3: And it was just setting him off really bad. And
[2:29] Speaker 3: so we look back and laugh about it now. We're
[2:33] Speaker 3: still friends. I love him, his wife, kids, and all that.
[2:38] Speaker 3: But in the moment, it was one of those like, man,
[2:41] Speaker 3: what is going on? And as a caddy too, it's like, okay,
[2:46] Speaker 3: this is not okay during... the tournament for like the
[2:50] Speaker 3: contention to be like this. So it's like, I got
[2:53] Speaker 3: to do something to change, to change up this attitude.
[2:56] Speaker 3: And if I put the bag down, it was like,
[2:59] Speaker 3: you want to go like this? I mean, and I,
[3:01] Speaker 3: it's not like I hadn't done anything crazy like that before.
[3:04] Speaker 3: I was caddying for a guy named Jumbo Elliott, John Elliott.
[3:08] Speaker 1: Yeah. Football player.
[3:09] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, but no, not the Giants football player. This
[3:12] Speaker 3: was the golfer, John Elliott.
[3:14] Speaker 1: Hold on, man.
[3:15] Speaker 2: He got to get, he got to, you can't do that.
[3:19] Speaker 1: I'm saying him.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Was he jumbo enough to be jumbo in the face
[3:23] Speaker 2: of the other jumbo?
[3:24] Speaker 3: Two reasons they called him jumbo. My guy, the golfer,
[3:27] Speaker 3: named jumbo because he has a huge head.
[3:30] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[3:31] Speaker 3: And because at the time, he was one of the
[3:33] Speaker 3: longest hitters out there. It was like him and John
[3:36] Speaker 3: Daly could just send it. So they called him Jumbo
[3:40] Speaker 3: as well. And in the golf space, you know, back then,
[3:44] Speaker 3: you know, this was before any kind of fantasy football
[3:47] Speaker 3: or anything like that. So it was like golfers weren't
[3:49] Speaker 3: really into football all that much back then. So they
[3:53] Speaker 3: didn't realize that there was a Jumbo Elliott on the Giants.
[3:55] Speaker 3: And as an Eagles fan, I knew there was a
[3:58] Speaker 3: Jumbo Elliott on the Giants, who, ironically enough, married a golfer.
[4:05] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[4:06] Speaker 3: Married a golfer from the LPGA Tour. Crazy enough. Yeah.
[4:09] Speaker 3: But my Jumbo Elliott, this was what I was getting
[4:12] Speaker 3: at was that after all that fighting stuff, when I
[4:16] Speaker 3: was caddying for Jumbo, he was having a tough time.
[4:19] Speaker 3: And I slammed the bag down at one point and
[4:21] Speaker 3: told him he sucked in the middle of the tournament
[4:23] Speaker 3: during a round on a par five. And I slammed
[4:26] Speaker 3: it down and I was like, yeah, you suck. Maybe
[4:28] Speaker 3: you should try darts or bowling or something after this.
[4:31] Speaker 3: And I gave him a smart ass look. And then
[4:34] Speaker 3: he proceeded to go birdie, birdie, hole in one after that.
[4:40] Speaker 3: And then some other golfers that were in the group
[4:43] Speaker 3: at the end of the round gave me their phone
[4:45] Speaker 3: number and was like, hey, call me when you got
[4:47] Speaker 3: a week off from comedy because every now and then
[4:49] Speaker 3: I need to kick the ass like that too. So
[4:52] Speaker 3: it's all about for caddy and sometimes it's all about
[4:54] Speaker 3: knowing the right thing to say at the right time
[4:57] Speaker 3: to get your man motivated. Or sometimes when not to
[5:01] Speaker 3: say anything at all. Just let your do be mad.
[5:05] Speaker 3: And like, you know, and sometimes that works too. That's
[5:08] Speaker 3: why I loved caddying so much. Cause that the psychology
[5:13] Speaker 3: of what goes into being on a guy's bag and
[5:16] Speaker 3: like trying to bring the best out of them. It's
[5:19] Speaker 3: easy when the guy's at his best, you know, caddying
[5:23] Speaker 3: for tiger in 2000. And I could have done that.
[5:26] Speaker 3: Anybody could have done the bag down, give the number
[5:31] Speaker 3: and watch what club he picked up.
[5:33] Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah.
[5:35] Speaker 3: Watch it.
[5:36] Speaker 2: So we're going to talk about the Tiger Slam, right?
[5:39] Speaker 2: I want to lead people into it, both a little
[5:42] Speaker 2: bit of the history of what was going on in golf.
[5:45] Speaker 2: And I always like to tell people my personal history
[5:47] Speaker 2: of observing golf. I had never sat and watched a
[5:51] Speaker 2: round of golf in my life until the 96 Masters.
[5:56] Speaker 2: The final round, and I don't know why I watched.
[5:59] Speaker 2: I don't have an answer for what it was, but
[6:01] Speaker 2: I turned it on. It really wasn't supposed to be compelling.
[6:04] Speaker 2: Greg Norman was up six shots, I believe it was,
[6:07] Speaker 2: going into the final round and was losing by the turf.
[6:13] Speaker 2: It was the most shocking, immediate collapse that I had
[6:17] Speaker 2: ever seen. He didn't even wait until it got close.
[6:19] Speaker 2: He immediately gave up the booty. He walked out there
[6:23] Speaker 2: on tee number one, dropped his draws, and the booty
[6:26] Speaker 2: was on display for everybody. It is the, I don't
[6:31] Speaker 2: think there is any comparable choke that anybody could have
[6:34] Speaker 2: because that's all it was.
[6:35] Speaker 1: And golf is a sport where people choke.
[6:36] Speaker 2: You don't really hold it against people in golf the
[6:38] Speaker 2: same way because everybody's got one on the ledger. where
[6:43] Speaker 2: they gave it up. Everybody sees it. There's nowhere for
[6:45] Speaker 2: you to hide. All of these things. But it was
[6:47] Speaker 2: the first time I'd watched the Masters. It was in SD,
[6:50] Speaker 2: which is an important note because the Masters took a
[6:52] Speaker 2: big jump in HD.
[6:53] Speaker 1: But I could watch it, and it was the first
[6:55] Speaker 1: time that I was like, oh, I get what's going
[6:57] Speaker 1: on here. That fall.
[7:00] Speaker 2: is when the Tiger Woods thing gets started, right? He
[7:03] Speaker 2: has declared as a pro, he started to win a
[7:06] Speaker 2: few tournaments in the fall, and then we come around
[7:08] Speaker 2: to the Masters in 97, where he famously shot a
[7:12] Speaker 2: 40 on the front nine in the first round and
[7:14] Speaker 2: a 30 on the back nine before he proceeded to
[7:19] Speaker 2: curb stop the rest of the field the whole way, right?
[7:23] Speaker 1: Like, it was like, oh, okay, he's here. I don't
[7:26] Speaker 1: know if it's possible.
[7:27] Speaker 2: For there to be anything comparable because in team sports,
[7:29] Speaker 2: nobody really wins that young.
[7:31] Speaker 1: And if you do, it's because you're part of an ensemble.
[7:33] Speaker 2: He beat everybody's ass so bad in there and then
[7:38] Speaker 2: didn't win another major until.
[7:40] Speaker 3: The 99 PGA, right?
[7:40] Speaker 1: Like, there were... Well, you can talk about that part.
[7:46] Speaker 1: He didn't win that major.
[7:48] Speaker 2: And I guess I say that because it's kind of
[7:50] Speaker 2: like when a young guy does something.
[7:51] Speaker 1: You're like, oh, he's going to be kicking ass forever.
[7:53] Speaker 1: But it didn't happen right away.
[7:55] Speaker 3: No, because he was making swing changes.
[7:58] Speaker 2: By the way, which is crazy because he just beat
[8:01] Speaker 2: everybody down.
[8:01] Speaker 3: The way that he won in 97, everyone was like, yo, okay,
[8:07] Speaker 3: it's over. Like this dude. And you heard people say it.
[8:11] Speaker 3: This kid's going to win forever. He's going to win everything.
[8:15] Speaker 3: Like Jim Nance said, historic. It was a historic win
[8:19] Speaker 3: at the Masters, and it kind of made everyone in
[8:21] Speaker 3: golf go, oh, snap. Like, how many times, even in
[8:27] Speaker 3: the 90s, did we hear child prodigies, not just in golf,
[8:32] Speaker 3: but in all sports, like, this is the next one.
[8:34] Speaker 3: And are they ever the next one?
[8:38] Speaker 1: Right.
[8:38] Speaker 3: Bruh. They ain't never the next one. They'd be like, hey, man,
[8:42] Speaker 3: weren't you supposed to be the next one? Yes, welcome
[8:44] Speaker 3: to Walmart.
[8:45] Speaker 1: Would you like a car?
[8:49] Speaker 3: But Tiger was like, holy crap, this kid is going
[8:52] Speaker 3: to do it. But he decided, nah, my swing is
[8:56] Speaker 3: not what I need it to be. And so he
[8:58] Speaker 3: goes through this period where, if you remember, way back
[9:02] Speaker 3: in the day, my boy Curtis Strange did an interview
[9:05] Speaker 3: with him at Milwaukee. And Tiger, that's the second place sucks. Like,
[9:09] Speaker 3: I just only want to win. And that's the Curtis Strange, oh,
[9:12] Speaker 3: you'll learn, kid. You'll learn. And that was... So he
[9:15] Speaker 3: wins the Masters, but then has that stretch where it's like,
[9:19] Speaker 3: maybe Curtis Strange was right. Like, winning, maybe he not.
[9:24] Speaker 3: But then... When he comes back and wins that PGA
[9:28] Speaker 3: in 99, you're like, oh, okay. Like, he figured something out.
[9:32] Speaker 3: Just like the front 940 in 97, and then something clicks,
[9:37] Speaker 3: and on the back nine, you're like, oh, that guy. Yeah,
[9:40] Speaker 3: that guy.
[9:40] Speaker 1: Right.
[9:41] Speaker 3: And after winning in 99 at that PGA Championship, you're
[9:44] Speaker 3: thinking to yourself, oh, if he figures something out, like,
[9:48] Speaker 3: that dude might be back. And so that was.
[9:52] Speaker 2: And keep this in mind, let me jump in right quick.
[9:54] Speaker 2: It is slowed down enough between April of 97 and
[9:58] Speaker 2: August of 99 that the game decided to try to
[10:02] Speaker 2: throw the.
[10:02] Speaker 1: David Duvall thing out there. Right. Like like it's like,
[10:05] Speaker 1: you know, maybe there's a rival at play here.
[10:08] Speaker 2: David Duvall, who, by the way, my favorite factoid of
[10:10] Speaker 2: David Duvall for people who don't really follow golf, they
[10:13] Speaker 2: already know this. David Duvall people so rich that when
[10:17] Speaker 2: they say Duvall in Jacksonville.
[10:19] Speaker 1: They talking about them. He's one of them.
[10:25] Speaker 2: Like every city you go to, that street is named
[10:28] Speaker 2: after somebody and you don't know who it is, but
[10:29] Speaker 2: they crazy rich.
[10:30] Speaker 1: All right, what about the whole county, bro?
[10:32] Speaker 3: That's what I'm trying to say. Like some people have
[10:35] Speaker 3: streets named after them. Some people might even have a
[10:39] Speaker 3: town named after them, but the county, the whole county, Bruh.
[10:46] Speaker 3: I mean, they still saying your family name at football
[10:52] Speaker 3: games in the NFL today.
[10:55] Speaker 1: Yes.
[10:56] Speaker 3: Yeah. And people, that's the thing I will say about
[10:59] Speaker 3: David too. At that time, he was, you know, he
[11:02] Speaker 3: was the dude that wore the Oakleys and he was
[11:04] Speaker 3: stone cold. But people don't know, even to this day,
[11:08] Speaker 3: he's one of the funniest guys that was out on
[11:10] Speaker 3: the PGA Tour. Like he was on the DL, super funny.
[11:14] Speaker 3: a great personality, but also very shy in front of
[11:17] Speaker 3: cameras and out around strangers, people he didn't know. So he,
[11:21] Speaker 3: you put them Oakleys on and he was like, you know,
[11:23] Speaker 3: that dude just looks like he thinks he's better than
[11:25] Speaker 3: everybody else. And it's like, no, that's kind of how
[11:28] Speaker 3: super duper shy people, they come off too. But you don't,
[11:31] Speaker 3: if all you see on TV is the dude in
[11:32] Speaker 3: the glasses who don't look like he's smiling or like
[11:35] Speaker 3: he don't do the fist pump or nothing like that,
[11:38] Speaker 3: then you're like, man, look at this dude. Who do
[11:40] Speaker 3: you think he is? But that's not honestly who he was.
[11:43] Speaker 3: But yeah, at That was in that moment where it
[11:45] Speaker 3: was like, uh-oh, Tiger got a dude who's going to
[11:48] Speaker 3: threaten him for the crown. Like, this dude is coming.
[11:51] Speaker 2: It seemed possible. We get to the year 2000, though. Tiger,
[11:55] Speaker 2: after dominating the course in 97, and by that time.
[12:00] Speaker 1: had they begun tweaking the course yet? I believe they
[12:03] Speaker 1: had begun.
[12:03] Speaker 3: Tweaking the course. Oh, yeah, the Tiger proofing after the
[12:07] Speaker 3: 97 Masters. Everybody was like, you know what we need
[12:10] Speaker 3: to do? We need to back them T's up.
[12:13] Speaker 1: Yo, yeah, yeah, let's talk about this.
[12:14] Speaker 2: Like, it would have been one thing If everybody went
[12:18] Speaker 2: out there and destroyed the course and thereby, you know
[12:21] Speaker 2: what I mean?
[12:22] Speaker 1: Like, you'd be just like, yo, the course, the game
[12:24] Speaker 1: has outrun the course.
[12:25] Speaker 2: We need to change the course because everybody's out here
[12:28] Speaker 2: shooting 20 under and that's not what it's supposed to be.
[12:31] Speaker 1: That's not what happened. One dude did it.
[12:36] Speaker 2: And they decided, you know, that's actually kind of not
[12:39] Speaker 2: fair to the rest of the kids, don't you think?
[12:41] Speaker 3: This is also where they tell you that, like, sometimes
[12:44] Speaker 3: marketing is a lie. It's just say the opposite of
[12:48] Speaker 3: what you're doing because it's going to sound amazing. You
[12:51] Speaker 3: know what I mean? You know, it's going to sound odd.
[12:54] Speaker 3: People are like, yeah, that's a good idea. What did
[12:57] Speaker 3: they call it? We're tiger proofing. And what did they
[13:00] Speaker 3: actually do? That's field proof. You made the golf course
[13:05] Speaker 3: so that pretty much only Tiger Woods had a chance
[13:09] Speaker 3: because nobody was hitting it as far as him and
[13:12] Speaker 3: hitting the shots he was hitting during tournaments. And so
[13:14] Speaker 3: what you do for the dudes that couldn't hit it
[13:17] Speaker 3: as far as him, we should make the course longer.
[13:19] Speaker 1: I don't think that's, I don't.
[13:25] Speaker 3: Okay, if you're going to roll with that. But when
[13:27] Speaker 3: they did it, everybody was like, we're tiger proof in
[13:30] Speaker 3: the course. Okay.
[13:32] Speaker 2: They were at wit's end. That's what that was. They
[13:34] Speaker 2: were like, I don't know what to do. Now, the
[13:36] Speaker 2: one thing they did, correct me if I'm wrong, it
[13:38] Speaker 2: was a lot of right to left shots. It's almost
[13:41] Speaker 2: like they went and found the weaknesses that they thought
[13:43] Speaker 2: existed in Tiger's game.
[13:44] Speaker 1: And they tried to create holes that played right into that.
[13:48] Speaker 3: Well, Tiger's miss at the time was the snap hook
[13:52] Speaker 3: to the right. So if you make a lot of
[13:54] Speaker 3: holes where it feeds a little bit from right to left,
[13:59] Speaker 3: you're like, yeah. So if he tries to hit it
[14:01] Speaker 3: too hard, it's going to go hard to the right.
[14:04] Speaker 3: The problem was Tiger's go-to shot was right to left.
[14:09] Speaker 3: So when he was feeling it or under pressure, what's
[14:12] Speaker 3: the shot he could always count on? Oh, the hole
[14:16] Speaker 3: goes the way I need it to. Thank you very much.
[14:18] Speaker 3: Where it actually might have helped if they did it
[14:20] Speaker 3: the opposite way.
[14:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he did not win a Masters after 97.
[14:25] Speaker 2: Going into 2000, Vijay Singh won the 2000 Masters, and
[14:29] Speaker 2: it is important to note that he won the 2000
[14:31] Speaker 2: Masters because after that, wasn't nobody else winning nothing.
[14:34] Speaker 1: For a very, very, very... long time, at least not
[14:40] Speaker 1: as a major.
[14:41] Speaker 2: Now, I want to stop and pause just for a
[14:43] Speaker 2: second because we've talked about Tiger and we mentioned David Duvall,
[14:46] Speaker 2: but it's not like this was happening and it was
[14:49] Speaker 2: like some weak time in the history of professional golf.
[14:53] Speaker 1: Like, it was a deep field of players. There's a
[14:56] Speaker 1: lot of guys out there.
[14:57] Speaker 3: He was going against a lot of golf Hall of Famers. Like,
[15:01] Speaker 3: this is the time you were talking about. Greg Norman
[15:04] Speaker 3: was still out there.
[15:05] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[15:05] Speaker 3: Nick Faldo, who won that 96 Masters, he's still out there.
[15:10] Speaker 3: Bernhard Langer in his prime, too. I mean, Vijay Singh.
[15:14] Speaker 3: Phil Mickelson was coming on at the time as well.
[15:17] Speaker 3: He was the young gun. You said David Duvall was
[15:20] Speaker 3: also out there. You had a guy like Hal Sutton,
[15:23] Speaker 3: you know, who famously later on, like, beat a right
[15:27] Speaker 3: club today. So there were... The competition that Tiger was
[15:32] Speaker 3: going up against, like, that was a still... We got
[15:36] Speaker 3: spoiled by Tiger, so we think it was Tiger and nobody.
[15:40] Speaker 3: But he was beating... Ernie Els was out there too.
[15:43] Speaker 3: So he was beating big-name dudes. And if you remember,
[15:48] Speaker 3: at the start of that 2000 season, Tiger didn't win
[15:53] Speaker 3: the first five events and actually finished tied for 13th twice.
[15:57] Speaker 3: So he finished... Tied for 13th at AT & T
[16:01] Speaker 3: at Pebble Beach, which was the Pro-Am at the time.
[16:04] Speaker 3: I think there was terrible weather there. But then in L.A.,
[16:08] Speaker 3: where he's never played great there either at the time,
[16:11] Speaker 3: that was called the Nissan Open. Today it's his tournament
[16:14] Speaker 3: called the Genesis Invitational. He only finished tied for 13th there.
[16:18] Speaker 3: Everything else was inside the top 10. But it wasn't
[16:21] Speaker 3: like he came out those first five events and was gangbusters, right?
[16:27] Speaker 1: Right.
[16:27] Speaker 3: I was like, oh, OK, this is all right. Not,
[16:30] Speaker 3: you know, it's OK.
[16:33] Speaker 2: By the way, Mickelson, the great beneficiary of the Tiger Proofing,
[16:36] Speaker 2: because the thing that people do not realize is a
[16:39] Speaker 2: left handed player.
[16:40] Speaker 1: Never won the Masters in the 20th century. Not one.
[16:43] Speaker 2: Now, you could say it was a technology issue and
[16:45] Speaker 2: all these other things, but Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, all
[16:48] Speaker 2: those lefties won after they started fucking with the course.
[16:52] Speaker 3: Well, and two, Phil and Bubba are both, and I
[16:56] Speaker 3: misspoke on, it wasn't 2000, it was 2001. Yeah. 2001,
[17:00] Speaker 3: when Tiger didn't, started the season and wasn't in those
[17:04] Speaker 3: first five tournaments, didn't get any wins or anything like that.
[17:07] Speaker 3: So it was like, trending towards that Tiger slam. So 2001,
[17:11] Speaker 3: Tiger doesn't do anything like gangbusters coming out. But you
[17:15] Speaker 3: were talking about Phil and Bubba. So both of them
[17:18] Speaker 3: left-handed fade the golf ball. And at the Masters, for
[17:23] Speaker 3: a lefty hitting a fade, which is a very comfortable shot,
[17:27] Speaker 3: even though Bubba can do it both ways, but it
[17:31] Speaker 3: favors a lefty that can hit it far and hit
[17:33] Speaker 3: a fade. So you got two guys... who won the
[17:36] Speaker 3: masters that loved hitting a high bomb fade on a
[17:42] Speaker 3: golf course that favors a high far fade for, for
[17:47] Speaker 3: a right-handed golfer. That's a draw. And so it's easy
[17:50] Speaker 3: to snap it. It's easy to snap it.
[17:53] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[17:54] Speaker 2: Now we get to 2000. The U S open is
[17:58] Speaker 2: at pebble beach. Um, I will let you get into
[18:03] Speaker 2: the description of it because I can't. I just know
[18:05] Speaker 2: Tiger won the damn thing by 15 shots.
[18:07] Speaker 3: Here's a simple thing. Golf is a sport that can't
[18:12] Speaker 3: be perfected, right? Except in 2000 at the U.S. Open
[18:18] Speaker 3: at Pebble Beach, Tiger did something that's never been done.
[18:22] Speaker 3: There's plenty of times where dudes beat golfers. In 2000
[18:28] Speaker 3: at the U.S. Open, it's real easy. Tiger beat the game.
[18:33] Speaker 3: Tiger Woods at 2000 at the US Open, he was
[18:38] Speaker 3: Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. He was not only the
[18:44] Speaker 3: only one under par, he beat the number, second place
[18:49] Speaker 3: was plus three. He was minus 12. So when I,
[18:58] Speaker 3: and the USGA prides itself on, on setting up their
[19:02] Speaker 3: golf courses, especially back then. They would let the golf
[19:05] Speaker 3: course get out of hand where it would be unplayable
[19:09] Speaker 3: for a regular PGA Tour event. They would have to
[19:12] Speaker 3: stop play. But the USGA was like, nah, par is
[19:16] Speaker 3: going to be the winning score. Like, sometimes one over,
[19:19] Speaker 3: and we're cool with that. And dudes are going to
[19:21] Speaker 3: be walking out of here needing Bactine and a massage
[19:25] Speaker 3: because they're going to be so tore up from the
[19:27] Speaker 3: whooping we gave them. Like... But Tiger went out there
[19:31] Speaker 3: and was like Rick James' FBO couch.
[19:35] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[19:36] Speaker 2: Well, what's wild about it to me is I always
[19:39] Speaker 2: wrote about Tiger. The thing about Tiger was that he
[19:42] Speaker 2: was the great eraser, right? Like this was not a
[19:45] Speaker 2: technically perfect game that he played. but he's not Nick Faldo.
[19:49] Speaker 2: He's not Nick price. Who's keeping the ball in the
[19:51] Speaker 2: middle of the fairway and keeping it going. And the
[19:53] Speaker 2: U S open is designed to penalize you for straying, right?
[19:58] Speaker 2: For going left and right. And now you're in this
[20:00] Speaker 2: unthinkable rough. The idea is that these dudes are going
[20:04] Speaker 2: to look like you. when they play on this course, right?
[20:06] Speaker 2: Because they're going to be out there when things go bad.
[20:09] Speaker 2: And he shot 12 under there?
[20:11] Speaker 3: Well, here's the, like, think about the most famous shot
[20:14] Speaker 3: that he hit on that par five, the sixth hole.
[20:17] Speaker 3: There is, on the right side, before the cliff falls
[20:22] Speaker 3: into the Pacific Ocean, at the time, there was probably
[20:26] Speaker 3: 15 yards of I won't even call it rough. It
[20:32] Speaker 3: was like, hey, it was wispy, looked like a wheat field.
[20:37] Speaker 3: He hit a shot into that wheat field where if
[20:39] Speaker 3: anyone else in the field is in there with the
[20:42] Speaker 3: equipment and ball that they had at the time, you
[20:46] Speaker 3: have to just chip out sideways to the fairway because
[20:50] Speaker 3: this is the other thing. If you go for that
[20:52] Speaker 3: green in two, even from the fairway off a little
[20:56] Speaker 3: bit of a downslope, you're hitting over a five-story building. Which,
[21:02] Speaker 3: for pro golfers, like, that's in your head. Now you
[21:05] Speaker 3: put a guy in a wheat field, not in a
[21:09] Speaker 3: perfect fairway where you're like, okay, I still got to
[21:12] Speaker 3: think about this stuff. And this dude takes an iron
[21:15] Speaker 3: out of that, and at the time you heard the
[21:17] Speaker 3: broadcaster say, probably laying up on this. And then you
[21:21] Speaker 3: hear one guy, I don't know if he's.
[21:23] Speaker 1: Laying up here.
[21:26] Speaker 3: And he takes this lash at it, and when it
[21:28] Speaker 3: comes out, like.
[21:32] Speaker 3: I don't know where the term and saying came from,
[21:35] Speaker 3: but boy, it held true there. Silence is deafening. And
[21:40] Speaker 3: when that ball came out, there was... Like, even the
[21:44] Speaker 3: crowd was just like, ugh. And then, just watch. Because, like, um...
[21:49] Speaker 3: Is that ball going to the... And then the people
[21:53] Speaker 3: at the bottom can't see, and the people at the
[21:55] Speaker 3: top are like, we'll just wait for his third shot.
[21:58] Speaker 1: Oh, shit!
[21:59] Speaker 3: Like... And then hops up onto the green and he's
[22:02] Speaker 3: got a putt for Eagle. And you're like, wait, that's,
[22:06] Speaker 3: it's not, that's not possible. And that, I think that
[22:09] Speaker 3: swing in that moment was when the whole world said
[22:14] Speaker 3: to themselves, yep, video game. Like this dude, he went
[22:19] Speaker 3: from Tiger Woods, the golfer to Tiger Woods, the immortal
[22:24] Speaker 3: at the, it was like this dude. Okay. So how
[22:27] Speaker 3: much is second place? Because if you're doing that and
[22:32] Speaker 3: you're the only human in the world at the time
[22:35] Speaker 3: that can do that, like maybe you're not human. And
[22:38] Speaker 3: so we're not playing a fair fight. And this is
[22:41] Speaker 3: why I say that U.S. Open... tiger beat the game
[22:46] Speaker 3: not he didn't beat the field he beat the game
[22:49] Speaker 3: of golf it's when's the last time.
[22:51] Speaker 1: The most unbeatable game that has ever existed.
[22:54] Speaker 3: Against the most beatable organization you know what i mean
[22:57] Speaker 3: when's the last time the usga as an organization had
[23:01] Speaker 3: a golfer make them go like they was ugly crying.
[23:08] Speaker 1: Right, right.
[23:09] Speaker 2: He had already brought Augusta National to the, oh, no, no, no,
[23:13] Speaker 2: not him.
[23:14] Speaker 1: Not like this. Cannot be.
[23:16] Speaker 2: And the USGA is just like, yeah, I mean, but look,
[23:20] Speaker 2: we still got it like that because he had not
[23:21] Speaker 2: won the US Open up until this point.
[23:24] Speaker 1: We have to remember.
[23:25] Speaker 2: And I want to run through the progression of the
[23:27] Speaker 2: rounds for people so they understand. The first round of
[23:29] Speaker 2: that tournament played pretty well for everybody. Like Tiger had
[23:32] Speaker 2: a wire to wire.
[23:33] Speaker 1: Win in this.
[23:33] Speaker 2: He shot a 65, but Miguel Angel Jimenez, who I
[23:36] Speaker 2: think tied for second in the tournament, he shot a
[23:39] Speaker 2: five under. John Houston shot a four under. He had
[23:41] Speaker 2: guys like Hale Urban, there's three under. A bunch of
[23:43] Speaker 2: guys at two under. Like people had a pretty good
[23:47] Speaker 2: opening round. The course began to play tougher, but understand this.
[23:52] Speaker 2: At the end of the second round, Tiger is at
[23:54] Speaker 2: eight under. Second place is at two under. At the
[23:58] Speaker 2: end of the third round, he's still at eight under.
[24:00] Speaker 2: It's a par 71. He's still at eight under. But
[24:03] Speaker 2: now it's two over. That's behind him.
[24:07] Speaker 1: Yes, that is. Michael Collins is doing what it looks like.
[24:10] Speaker 3: Everybody start here. And then, oh, hey. Hey man, where
[24:14] Speaker 3: you going? No, no. We're all coming down. Hey, we're
[24:18] Speaker 3: all going to the basement. Why are you going up
[24:20] Speaker 3: to the attic? Where are you going?
[24:22] Speaker 2: Like if they had played four more rounds, Tiger would
[24:24] Speaker 2: have been up all the way up here and everybody
[24:26] Speaker 2: else would have been under the ground.
[24:27] Speaker 1: So he's up 10 at the end of the third round.
[24:31] Speaker 1: And by the end of the final.
[24:32] Speaker 2: Round, he's up 15.
[24:36] Speaker 3: It was one of those things on Sunday where, Even
[24:42] Speaker 3: the announcer was just like, there's no way to make
[24:45] Speaker 3: this dramatic other than all we need to focus on
[24:49] Speaker 3: is this guy and what he's doing. Because no one
[24:53] Speaker 3: had ever seen this before, especially in a tournament like this,
[24:58] Speaker 3: not just with this prestige, but at this place, you know?
[25:02] Speaker 3: I mean, you're talking about a place where Jack Nicklaus
[25:05] Speaker 3: won a US Open, Tom Watson won a US Open,
[25:08] Speaker 3: but not like this. Like no one had ever done
[25:11] Speaker 3: anything like this where there was no drama with the score.
[25:16] Speaker 3: The drama was how much could this dude win by?
[25:20] Speaker 3: You know what I mean? At one point you thought
[25:23] Speaker 3: someone from the USGA would just come out with a
[25:26] Speaker 3: flag and be like, okay, man, you don't even got
[25:30] Speaker 3: to finish.
[25:30] Speaker 4: Just please stop.
[25:31] Speaker 1: Stop, man.
[25:33] Speaker 3: Please just stop, bro. Don't do this.
[25:35] Speaker 1: And the rest of it. And the rest of these
[25:37] Speaker 1: guys are just in it for money.
[25:39] Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that as an insult to those people,
[25:41] Speaker 2: but I remember in 97, I was on the phone
[25:43] Speaker 2: with my brother and I was like, I don't even
[25:45] Speaker 2: know why these other cats are out here.
[25:46] Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, because they cut checks for second.
[25:49] Speaker 2: Like the only thing left to play for, for everybody
[25:52] Speaker 2: else was the money.
[25:54] Speaker 1: There was nothing else here for you.
[25:58] Speaker 3: And dudes would say it. That's the other thing. That's what,
[26:02] Speaker 3: that's another thing people forget is guys like Ernie Els
[26:05] Speaker 3: would be like, we know when Tiger's playing and he's
[26:08] Speaker 3: playing well, we're all playing for second. Can you imagine
[26:12] Speaker 3: in any other sport, like going into a game? Listen, if,
[26:17] Speaker 3: if they're, if they got their B plus game, we
[26:19] Speaker 3: can't win.
[26:23] Speaker 2: The only thing similar to me is when Usain Bolt
[26:26] Speaker 2: won the hundred at the 2012 Olympics, the second one.
[26:30] Speaker 2: I've never seen people happier for second and third in
[26:35] Speaker 2: my life. They were celebrating like they won gold medals.
[26:39] Speaker 1: And those are sprinters.
[26:40] Speaker 3: But that's also because with probably 25 meters left, you
[26:47] Speaker 3: say looking around, smiling at people. Like, when's the last
[26:50] Speaker 3: time you seen second, third, fourth, and fifth? They on
[26:54] Speaker 3: the grind. And you got one dude who's like this. Hey, mama. Hey,
[26:58] Speaker 3: what's up, Uncle Tim? How you doing?
[27:03] Speaker 2: Brother, I just remember, I think in 2012, I think
[27:07] Speaker 2: Tyson Gay finished with like a 9.85.
[27:11] Speaker 1: Or something like that. Yeah. So what?
[27:17] Speaker 2: He left with his dick in his hand. There was
[27:20] Speaker 2: no medal for him. I think it was him. I
[27:24] Speaker 2: can't remember exactly who it was, but there was nothing for...
[27:27] Speaker 2: Fourth place was such an unreal score, and you weren't
[27:31] Speaker 2: even close.
[27:35] Speaker 3: It's hard to tell people that... Well, actually, no, it
[27:39] Speaker 3: might be easier. It might be easier to tell somebody...
[27:43] Speaker 3: You know, yo, I ran nine, eight, six.
[27:45] Speaker 1: You'd be like, oh, snap.
[27:48] Speaker 3: How much did you win by? Nah. Nah.
[27:51] Speaker 2: Man, it really wasn't about that. You know what I'm saying? Like,
[27:55] Speaker 2: it was about me. When I race, I race against myself.
[27:59] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I don't even be thinking
[28:01] Speaker 1: about these other cats out here. Like, that's what you
[28:03] Speaker 1: got to say in golf, man. I just play the course, man.
[28:05] Speaker 3: Tiger did say, too, back in the day, like, he
[28:07] Speaker 3: had to make up games sometimes. That's what him and
[28:11] Speaker 3: Stevie would do. They would be like, okay, now I
[28:16] Speaker 3: hit this mark that I set for myself. Now what's
[28:19] Speaker 3: the next mark? Okay, now get to this number. All right.
[28:22] Speaker 3: And then once you get there, oh, I bet you
[28:24] Speaker 3: can't get to this number. And that's the game you're
[28:27] Speaker 3: playing because you're not playing against everybody else.
[28:31] Speaker 2: I forgot about old Stevie. Talk about messing up your
[28:35] Speaker 2: good thing, boy.
[28:36] Speaker 1: All right. I forgot about Stevie.
[28:39] Speaker 2: Did Stevie get up there and get a little bit
[28:42] Speaker 2: loose with the homies at that little banquet that one time?
[28:46] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
[28:50] Speaker 3: That's when you learn that the internet is international. Yes.
[28:54] Speaker 3: You're at something in New Zealand. You're like, I can
[28:56] Speaker 3: just have some fun, drink a little bit, get a
[28:59] Speaker 3: little tipsy. say some fun things. And that was one
[29:03] Speaker 3: of those when everybody started realizing, oh, that stuff people
[29:06] Speaker 3: record on their phones gets out and it goes worldwide.
[29:10] Speaker 2: They always get loose at the crib, man. They always
[29:12] Speaker 2: wind up going back.
[29:13] Speaker 3: You think you're in a safe space.
[29:15] Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
[29:16] Speaker 2: Or don't let him be talking to a newspaper reporter
[29:18] Speaker 2: in the native language.
[29:20] Speaker 1: That's like when the boys go back to France. Like,
[29:22] Speaker 1: let me tell you something.
[29:23] Speaker 2: This offseason, that boy Victor going to go over to
[29:26] Speaker 2: France and say something crazy to Le Keep.
[29:30] Speaker 1: Or one of them other magazines they got over there.
[29:33] Speaker 1: Just you watch. Just you watch.
[29:35] Speaker 2: He ain't going to be able to help it. It's
[29:37] Speaker 2: like it's in the French interviews that when he says
[29:39] Speaker 2: stuff like, yeah, Rudy Gobert will never win defensive player
[29:42] Speaker 2: of the year again. Yo, man, like, we got Google
[29:46] Speaker 2: Translate now, homie.
[29:47] Speaker 3: We can find out. You ain't got nobody on your
[29:51] Speaker 3: team saying hold up. But see, here's– for me, I'm
[29:55] Speaker 3: a big fan of the flip side of that. It's like–
[29:59] Speaker 3: We don't get to attack people for doing stuff like that.
[30:03] Speaker 3: And then on the flip side, be like, I don't
[30:05] Speaker 3: understand why all these athletes are so vanilla with all
[30:09] Speaker 3: their answers. It's like, no, you say that, but then
[30:13] Speaker 3: you complain and bitch when a dude is honest and
[30:16] Speaker 3: says what he thinks. And it's like, how dare you
[30:20] Speaker 3: pick one, man, make up your damn mind.
[30:25] Speaker 1: Hey, man, we're going to come back.

[31:52] Speaker 1: All right.
[31:53] Speaker 2: We are back with Michael Collins. He got his master's gear.
[31:55] Speaker 2: I should have worn my master's visor. You know what
[31:59] Speaker 2: I'm saying? I got a couple of ball markers, too.
[32:01] Speaker 2: You know, when people go down there, they bring a
[32:03] Speaker 2: little something back for you, boy.
[32:04] Speaker 3: Bring a little something. Let me tell you. Do you
[32:05] Speaker 3: know what the like first timers are? Their average spend
[32:12] Speaker 3: is just under $ 2, 000.
[32:13] Speaker 1: Are you serious?
[32:15] Speaker 3: Yeah, big time. And I spend, when I have been
[32:18] Speaker 3: to the Masters, and I've been there 14 times, 13 times,
[32:24] Speaker 3: and I have never left Augusta National without dropping four
[32:32] Speaker 3: large games. But I know, like, I've talked to some
[32:37] Speaker 3: of the people that work there, and, like, they've told
[32:39] Speaker 3: me stories of people walking in spending 50, 50 Gs.
[32:42] Speaker 3: But then they're out selling all the stuff. Like, I
[32:45] Speaker 3: would never.
[32:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, nah, that don't feel right.
[32:47] Speaker 3: No, man, that's the thing. Like, now, the one thing
[32:49] Speaker 3: I do like to do is I, it's one of
[32:51] Speaker 3: the best things that you can do. Like you said,
[32:53] Speaker 3: with the stuff that you have, there is nothing that
[32:55] Speaker 3: is more meaningful to people that have never been there
[32:59] Speaker 3: than a gift from the master's.
[33:01] Speaker 2: Hey, man, let me tell you something. I'd be afraid
[33:03] Speaker 2: to go sell they stuff. That'd be like using Mickey
[33:05] Speaker 2: Mouse on your shit. Like, I'd be afraid they gonna
[33:09] Speaker 2: come find you.
[33:10] Speaker 1: And they ain't even.
[33:11] Speaker 3: I'm saying, like, this is... Nah, man. If you... Yeah, man.
[33:16] Speaker 3: It's just... Number one, it would feel slimy doing something
[33:19] Speaker 3: like that. So.
[33:21] Speaker 2: But, brother, even on top of that, they know people. Like,
[33:24] Speaker 2: if you think they can't get ice to bust your
[33:26] Speaker 2: door down, you crazy.
[33:30] Speaker 1: They know.
[33:31] Speaker 3: Right. Well, I will say there's... Augusta National is more
[33:38] Speaker 3: secretive than Fight Club.
[33:40] Speaker 1: Yes.
[33:42] Speaker 3: And the people that they're... The members that the names
[33:46] Speaker 3: of members you don't know, they're the ones that are like...
[33:51] Speaker 3: how they found out. Like, if somebody was doing something,
[33:54] Speaker 3: then not even, like, you just, you go to the
[33:56] Speaker 3: Masters and you buy $ 50, 000 worth of shirts and now
[34:00] Speaker 3: you put a Masters store up there and stuff like that.
[34:03] Speaker 3: And now, like, you and none of your family members
[34:08] Speaker 3: or anybody of your friends can ever get back to
[34:11] Speaker 3: the Masters tickets magically again. You never get back there. Like,
[34:14] Speaker 3: I wonder how that happened. Oh, there's, come on, man.
[34:18] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[34:18] Speaker 3: Come on.
[34:19] Speaker 1: Just try too hard.
[34:20] Speaker 3: But, Yeah, but some of the best gifts I ever
[34:22] Speaker 3: gave out, like, I hooked up one dude with a
[34:26] Speaker 3: Masters watch one time, and that was like, yeah, the
[34:31] Speaker 3: look on people's faces, you know? I had a dude
[34:35] Speaker 3: that was playing for my team, the Eagles, and he
[34:37] Speaker 3: was into watches. And then, so I surprised him one
[34:41] Speaker 3: time and was like, I'm going to give you something
[34:45] Speaker 3: that you can't get and you can show off that
[34:47] Speaker 3: all these other $ 300, 000 watches and quarter million dollar watches
[34:51] Speaker 3: and stuff like that. Anybody can buy them, but you
[34:54] Speaker 3: can't get this. And so being able to give people
[34:58] Speaker 3: stuff that they can't buy, bro, that's the greatest feeling
[35:01] Speaker 3: in the world. Watching people's face light up and stuff
[35:04] Speaker 3: like that. So yeah, I got probably, I got probably
[35:10] Speaker 3: 200 hats. I got a hat issue. my thing so
[35:15] Speaker 3: like for the years i've been going i got so
[35:17] Speaker 3: many hats and like of course now is the gnome
[35:20] Speaker 3: the gnome is the big thing.
[35:21] Speaker 2: Now yeah brother you got a hat issue because like
[35:24] Speaker 2: me you got a head issue you know what i'm.
[35:25] Speaker 1: Saying you know like and you'll.
[35:27] Speaker 2: Be out there playing like people don't understand like i
[35:29] Speaker 2: never quite got there into the ll zone you know
[35:31] Speaker 2: what i'm saying where it's just like hey you know
[35:34] Speaker 2: hats are gonna be my thing but we talk about
[35:36] Speaker 2: tiger woods saint andrews was 2000 for him And I
[35:41] Speaker 2: believe it's the first time he played St.
[35:42] Speaker 1: Andrews in the Open Championship.
[35:44] Speaker 2: And you correct me if I'm wrong, but this was
[35:46] Speaker 2: another course very much so made for Tiger Woods.
[35:50] Speaker 3: In a sense, he took all of the trouble out
[35:55] Speaker 3: of play. This was another. So, you know, this is
[35:59] Speaker 3: coming off of that U.S. Open win where he beat
[36:02] Speaker 3: the game.
[36:03] Speaker 1: Right.
[36:03] Speaker 3: Not only fulfilled by 15, and now he goes to
[36:06] Speaker 3: the Open Championship. Let's put this in perspective. He shot
[36:11] Speaker 3: minus 12 at the US Open and was like, everybody
[36:16] Speaker 3: was like, holy cow, this dude is like that. And
[36:19] Speaker 3: then he went to the Open Championship and shot minus 19,
[36:23] Speaker 3: almost shot minus 20, and beat the field by eight.
[36:27] Speaker 1: Yes.
[36:28] Speaker 3: At the old course.
[36:30] Speaker 2: Coming off 15, he is now one by eight.
[36:34] Speaker 3: This dude has won two major championships in the same season.
[36:40] Speaker 3: By 23 strokes combined.
[36:44] Speaker 1: Yes.
[36:45] Speaker 2: And Ernie L's Hall of Famer, I believe, was in
[36:46] Speaker 2: second place of both of those.
[36:49] Speaker 1: And he's the 23 behind guy.
[36:52] Speaker 3: He's 23 and me. Poor dude's 23 and me. Where
[36:58] Speaker 3: if Tiger's not playing, he's holding the two trophies. Like,
[37:02] Speaker 3: we're talking about an Ernie slam, potentially. So, yeah, that was...
[37:08] Speaker 3: That St. Andrews thing, like to do not only what
[37:12] Speaker 3: he did at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, at
[37:15] Speaker 3: Historic Place, now you go to literally the home of
[37:20] Speaker 3: golf itself.
[37:21] Speaker 2: St.
[37:21] Speaker 3: Andrews is the home of golf. And for most people
[37:26] Speaker 3: who've never played an Open Championship at St. Andrews, there
[37:30] Speaker 3: is a pretty good-sized learning curve. But Tiger was just
[37:34] Speaker 3: one of those guys who was in a place, and
[37:36] Speaker 3: this is also what happens. I can tell you this, too,
[37:39] Speaker 3: as a guy who's been fortunate enough to one or
[37:43] Speaker 3: two times get into those special moments with a player
[37:48] Speaker 3: where no matter what you do off the tee, the
[37:54] Speaker 3: number for the second shot is perfect. Like, there's nowhere
[38:00] Speaker 3: in between clubs. Like, what do you like here? Like,
[38:03] Speaker 3: it's no... You get there and you go 150. Pitching wedge? 150! Right.
[38:12] Speaker 3: And at the open, you're like, all right, 150 is
[38:15] Speaker 3: down pitching wedge downwind. Yep, perfect. Boom, hit the shot. Or, like,
[38:19] Speaker 3: you would... There were famous times where Stevie would just
[38:24] Speaker 3: be like at that target and Tiger would go, yeah.
[38:27] Speaker 3: And then as the ball came off of the club face,
[38:30] Speaker 3: he would be like that target right there. Right. Like
[38:34] Speaker 3: just cockily announcing to everybody, like you can't do that. Right.
[38:41] Speaker 3: And Stevie was the dude was like, yeah, that target.
[38:44] Speaker 3: And just boom, beat. Like it was. Watching. As a caddy,
[38:50] Speaker 3: watching those two work surgically like that was... It was
[38:56] Speaker 3: a dance, even at the Open, that I don't think
[39:00] Speaker 3: anyone had ever seen before like that. And it's coming
[39:04] Speaker 3: off the U.S. Open, and I think for the rest
[39:08] Speaker 3: of the field, that was the feeling of, hold him up.
[39:12] Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Like, you're already down like this,
[39:16] Speaker 3: and now.
[39:18] Speaker 3: Tiger and Stevie are grabbing him, like, hold him up. Like,
[39:22] Speaker 3: we ain't done knocking you. Like, yeah what do you do.
[39:27] Speaker 2: And those in those first three majors of the year
[39:30] Speaker 2: at that point this is when the pga was on
[39:31] Speaker 2: the back end of the schedule rather than being on
[39:33] Speaker 2: the front is analogous in tennis to you have hard
[39:39] Speaker 2: a hard court major a clay major, and a grass major.
[39:42] Speaker 2: Like these are three different types of golf that you
[39:44] Speaker 2: are playing, right? Like the Litz golf that is required
[39:47] Speaker 2: to play at the open is not the same. It's
[39:50] Speaker 2: not just like, oh, okay, you've been whooping ass everywhere.
[39:53] Speaker 2: Now you're going to come whoop ass here because that's
[39:54] Speaker 2: what you do. No, you have to play a different game.
[39:57] Speaker 2: Like was it at the open that year that Tiger
[39:59] Speaker 2: went out there without the driver and won in the
[40:01] Speaker 2: final round?
[40:02] Speaker 3: Oh, he had the driver in the bag and didn't
[40:03] Speaker 3: have to hit it.
[40:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what it was. Yeah.
[40:05] Speaker 2: But like it's these are these are different different games
[40:09] Speaker 2: that he has had to play.
[40:10] Speaker 1: And he just went and dominated U.S.
[40:12] Speaker 2: Open golf and then came behind it and dominated this
[40:15] Speaker 2: Lynx golf where you're playing with this crazy wind.
[40:17] Speaker 1: It's probably raining. All your shots need to stay low.
[40:21] Speaker 3: That's the key. So you made a great analogy there
[40:24] Speaker 3: with tennis. Right. When you're playing on the hard court,
[40:27] Speaker 3: it's a power game. When you're playing on the grass court,
[40:30] Speaker 3: it's a ground game. And same with the clay. When
[40:33] Speaker 3: you're playing on the clay, it's more of a precision
[40:36] Speaker 3: type of thing. Well, the US Open is all about precision.
[40:40] Speaker 3: You need to hit it here, and then you need
[40:41] Speaker 3: to hit it here. So you're playing to spots, and
[40:44] Speaker 3: you got to hit it really high and really soft,
[40:46] Speaker 3: and no one could do it like Tiger could do
[40:48] Speaker 3: it back then, especially with mid to long irons. So
[40:51] Speaker 3: now when you go to the Open Championship... Instead of
[40:55] Speaker 3: playing everything high, now you got to play everything low.
[40:58] Speaker 3: You're not landing anything on the green because it plays
[41:01] Speaker 3: so firm and so fast that if something hits the green,
[41:03] Speaker 3: it gone. Like she is running way back.
[41:06] Speaker 1: So you got greens at that level for people who
[41:08] Speaker 1: don't know are like putting in the kitchen.
[41:10] Speaker 3: Correct. And the fairways sometimes at open championships can be
[41:14] Speaker 3: faster than the greens. So you're landing a ball 20
[41:17] Speaker 3: to 30 yards short of the putting surface and then
[41:21] Speaker 3: hoping that it takes the mounds correctly. misses the bunkers
[41:25] Speaker 3: and gets on the putting surface. And so those two
[41:29] Speaker 3: style of games are, it's completely opposite. It's chocolate and vanilla.
[41:34] Speaker 3: Like it's not like, well, my game kind of fits
[41:37] Speaker 3: a little bit of both. No, it don't. You have
[41:40] Speaker 3: to play a completely different style of golf. And for
[41:43] Speaker 3: him to go over there and Tiger, like dominating like that,
[41:46] Speaker 3: winning by eight shots after playing a completely different style.
[41:51] Speaker 3: And you're talking about these things are that's, Four weeks apart.
[41:55] Speaker 3: It's a month. So it's not like I got plenty
[41:58] Speaker 3: of time to prepare and get ready. I'll take two months,
[42:02] Speaker 3: and I'm going to change up kind of how I
[42:04] Speaker 3: flight everything and what I need to do. Nah. You
[42:08] Speaker 3: got a month where you're taking time off, too, to chill,
[42:13] Speaker 3: and then you're going to just show up there, and
[42:14] Speaker 3: your game's going to be set and ready? Like, where
[42:17] Speaker 3: are you going... Where are you going to practice that
[42:20] Speaker 3: in the United States? Because nowhere in the U.S. can
[42:23] Speaker 3: you set up courses at the time to play like that.
[42:27] Speaker 3: Nowhere in the U.S. was like that. So him showing
[42:31] Speaker 3: up and doing that was another one where everybody was like, oh,
[42:34] Speaker 3: this dude doing this too?
[42:39] Speaker 1: And then he comes about hollering the PGA next.
[42:41] Speaker 2: And it's interesting, the PGA is the one in this
[42:43] Speaker 2: run that we talk about the least, but it's the
[42:44] Speaker 2: one that went to the playoff. And I remember very
[42:47] Speaker 2: clearly when this happened, something that was very interesting is
[42:50] Speaker 2: that he's in the playoff with this dude named Bob May.
[42:52] Speaker 2: That meant nothing to us, but Bob May was that
[42:55] Speaker 2: dude back in the day in California. Like that was
[42:58] Speaker 2: a guy that Young Tiger was like trying to keep up,
[43:00] Speaker 2: was trying to get to at a point. And good
[43:03] Speaker 2: for you, Bob May. You got to the playoff. Even
[43:05] Speaker 2: better for you that you lost. Because if you hadn't lost,
[43:07] Speaker 2: this would have just kind of been weirdo factoid, right?
[43:10] Speaker 2: But now Tiger's back-to-back champion at the PGA.
[43:13] Speaker 3: And the irony was, like, that was the greatest Cinderella
[43:17] Speaker 3: story at the time that we were seeing. And it
[43:20] Speaker 3: might have been a great Cinderella story if he won.
[43:24] Speaker 1: Yes.
[43:25] Speaker 3: Like, it would have been unheard of if he won.
[43:28] Speaker 3: But two things about that.
[43:30] Speaker 1: One.
[43:31] Speaker 3: If Bob May wins that playoff, then we don't get
[43:35] Speaker 3: to have any of the Tiger Slam conversations at all.
[43:39] Speaker 3: And maybe the Slam never happens the way that it happened.
[43:45] Speaker 3: Who knows? There's no way to Monday morning quarterback. And
[43:49] Speaker 3: fast forward then, Y.E. Yang at another PGA Championship doesn't
[43:57] Speaker 3: become Goff's Buster Douglas. Because Tiger never has then that
[44:02] Speaker 3: run where he is undefeated going into Sunday with the
[44:06] Speaker 3: lead of a major. There was no such thing as
[44:09] Speaker 3: that run. And then Y.E. Yang doesn't become Y.E. Yang.
[44:14] Speaker 3: And everything that happens after that also never potentially happens.
[44:21] Speaker 3: But at the time, Bob May even getting into that playoff,
[44:26] Speaker 3: who is this short dude who is... is 50 yards
[44:32] Speaker 3: behind Tiger off the tee, and yet hitting these long
[44:36] Speaker 3: irons against nine irons. Guys who's hitting it high and
[44:41] Speaker 3: soft against a dude who has to bring it in
[44:44] Speaker 3: low because he's using irons that are so much longer,
[44:47] Speaker 3: and he's further away than these greens than Tiger is,
[44:51] Speaker 3: and yet he's hanging with them. So there's that... You're
[44:58] Speaker 3: torn as a golf fan. Like, I love the fact
[45:01] Speaker 3: that Cinderella's got a chance to dance and like is
[45:04] Speaker 3: hanging with Tiger and hitting these crazy, amazing shots when
[45:07] Speaker 3: he's out of position and like giving himself an absolute
[45:10] Speaker 3: chance going into this playoff. And you're like, holy cow. Like,
[45:15] Speaker 3: is Tiger really? Is this going to happen? And then
[45:18] Speaker 3: once we learned that backstory of Bob May was like, oh.
[45:22] Speaker 3: Not only is this dude the short knocker, and you're like,
[45:27] Speaker 3: how is this happening? And you're like, oh, because this
[45:29] Speaker 3: is a dude who knows that Tiger used to look
[45:33] Speaker 3: up to him.
[45:33] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[45:34] Speaker 3: So he might not have the same fear, or he's
[45:38] Speaker 3: drawing off of something from the past that no one
[45:41] Speaker 3: else had to draw off of against King Kong.
[45:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, like there's nothing like when you're like, oh, are
[45:48] Speaker 1: you talking about insert name here?
[45:50] Speaker 2: Like a great example of this, the 1999 Final Four
[45:54] Speaker 2: when UConn beat Duke and Duke had this point guard
[45:57] Speaker 2: named William Avery. William Avery was cold. It didn't work
[45:59] Speaker 2: out in the NBA for him, but he was cold
[46:01] Speaker 2: in college. And he was from Augusta, Georgia. UConn had
[46:05] Speaker 2: a dude named Ricky Moore who was two years ahead
[46:08] Speaker 2: of Avery and was basically like Will Avery's big brother.
[46:11] Speaker 1: And he treated him like that. And the game went
[46:13] Speaker 1: like that.
[46:14] Speaker 2: Every now and then that happens where there's some dude
[46:17] Speaker 2: on the other side that's like, you're talking about who?
[46:19] Speaker 2: It's like when you went college and when you first
[46:21] Speaker 2: get to college and you see the dudes that are
[46:23] Speaker 2: in frats, you're like, oh, they must be somebody.
[46:25] Speaker 1: They in the frat. But then you get to be
[46:27] Speaker 1: a junior. And then the cats that were nobodies when
[46:29] Speaker 1: you were freshmen are now in the frat. And you're like, oh,
[46:32] Speaker 1: you're talking about him? Right? That's Bob May. Like, oh,
[46:36] Speaker 1: you talking about him? Like, yeah, no, no, he was good.
[46:37] Speaker 1: I mean, it was coming, but I can't see myself
[46:40] Speaker 1: being afraid of this cat. And he wasn't. Yes.
[46:43] Speaker 3: Yes. And that, you know, for some people too, you know,
[46:46] Speaker 3: you hear that saying, the moment's too big. But as
[46:48] Speaker 3: you said, for Bob May at the time, it was like, oh, Tiger?
[46:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[46:53] Speaker 3: I know if I get into, you know, if we
[46:55] Speaker 3: have a battle, I ain't scared. Like, I battled this
[46:57] Speaker 3: dude before. It ain't, Even though the mystique outside the
[47:02] Speaker 3: bubble of Tiger is there in the moment, you're like, huh?
[47:05] Speaker 3: But for everybody on the outside, like you said, with
[47:07] Speaker 3: Avery from when they're playing Duke and all of that,
[47:11] Speaker 3: everyone on the outside was like, yo, who is this
[47:14] Speaker 3: dude that thinks he's and they don't know the backstory.
[47:17] Speaker 3: So you're just like, yo, who does dude think he is?
[47:20] Speaker 3: Like showing up and showing out, you're like, this dude's
[47:24] Speaker 3: out of nowhere. When it's like, no, he's not. He's
[47:26] Speaker 3: kind of not out of nowhere. You just didn't know
[47:28] Speaker 3: the backstory.
[47:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know what? It was cute. Three hole playoff,
[47:32] Speaker 1: Tiger wins. It was cute. It was cute. It really was, man.
[47:36] Speaker 1: It added flavor to the story. You know what I'm saying?
[47:40] Speaker 1: Like it made for a very interesting part of this podcast, right?
[47:42] Speaker 1: People didn't see that part coming.
[47:44] Speaker 2: Okay.
[47:45] Speaker 1: We get to the 2001 Masters.
[47:47] Speaker 2: Keeping in mind, again, they've been messing with the course,
[47:50] Speaker 2: and Tiger has not won since the first time he
[47:53] Speaker 2: got there. Now we're here, and it's this idea of
[47:56] Speaker 2: a Tiger slam. And to me, yes, you hold all
[47:58] Speaker 2: the trophies at the same time, it's a slam.
[48:00] Speaker 3: We got to take a timeout and back up, though,
[48:02] Speaker 3: a little bit, too, in 2001. What did he do
[48:05] Speaker 3: going into that Masters as well? You have to remember...
[48:10] Speaker 3: He won the two tournaments that he played in right
[48:14] Speaker 3: before that. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and who'd
[48:19] Speaker 3: he beat there? Phil Mickelson.
[48:21] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[48:22] Speaker 3: Then he goes to the Players' Championship. Again, little bit
[48:26] Speaker 3: of a different style of golf that you got to
[48:28] Speaker 3: play at the Players' Championship. And who's he beat at
[48:32] Speaker 3: the Players' Championship? Vijay Singh. So this dude... is going
[48:38] Speaker 3: in to the Masters, which is his next event.
[48:41] Speaker 1: Checking the list.
[48:42] Speaker 3: Having beat Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, probably at the
[48:46] Speaker 3: time his two biggest rivals on the golf course. Like
[48:50] Speaker 3: two dudes that were definitely guys that were names you
[48:55] Speaker 3: better know where they are on the leaderboard. And he
[48:59] Speaker 3: took both of them down in the two events going
[49:01] Speaker 3: into the Masters. And then, oh yeah, like who wins three...
[49:06] Speaker 3: Starts in a row. And now you're throwing on top
[49:09] Speaker 3: of the fact the slam is on the line. Like
[49:13] Speaker 3: no one since Bobby Jones has won all four in
[49:17] Speaker 3: a row. So he's going for a three, a three.
[49:21] Speaker 3: Three straight wins, API players, and now he shows up
[49:24] Speaker 3: at the Masters. And the pressure, and this is like, 2001,
[49:28] Speaker 3: the media was no joke. This is not 96 or
[49:32] Speaker 3: 97 when there's like 50 news reports, 50 newspaper people there,
[49:38] Speaker 3: and seven TV people. This is a gaggle, and the
[49:42] Speaker 3: internet is full-blown.
[49:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, and he.
[49:45] Speaker 2: Had to grind this one out, man. Like, he's down
[49:48] Speaker 2: five strokes at the end of the first round. He's
[49:52] Speaker 2: down two strokes at the end of the second. And
[49:55] Speaker 2: he's up one at the end of third. It's the
[49:59] Speaker 2: same as it ever was with Tiger and Augusta.
[50:01] Speaker 1: Just need a little time to get warm. Just need
[50:03] Speaker 1: a little time to get it cracking.
[50:04] Speaker 3: But Tiger's also that dude, too. Like, you think of
[50:07] Speaker 3: that first round, and you're like, man, he down five.
[50:10] Speaker 3: But everybody still, you know, in the back of every
[50:14] Speaker 3: golfer's head, too, that they're still doing this.
[50:18] Speaker 4: Yep. Yep.
[50:19] Speaker 3: You seen him? Have you seen him? Where he at?
[50:22] Speaker 3: Hold on.
[50:22] Speaker 1: Is he coming?
[50:23] Speaker 3: Is he coming? And so you're playing with that on
[50:27] Speaker 3: your shoulders against the dude who is like, now he's
[50:31] Speaker 3: looking at you from behind like, it's all right. I
[50:35] Speaker 3: just got to do what I got to do. And
[50:36] Speaker 3: then when that plod starts, I mean, this is that
[50:41] Speaker 3: Tiger Woods where if your name was at the top
[50:44] Speaker 3: of the leaderboard and his name was on a leaderboard
[50:47] Speaker 3: you could see, you started to get that sinking feeling
[50:51] Speaker 3: in your stomach. And when you were around, especially at Augusta,
[50:56] Speaker 3: because there's no electronic scoreboards. So everybody's sitting around there.
[51:00] Speaker 3: Two things happen. First is when you hear a roar
[51:06] Speaker 3: at Augusta, and even to this day, as many times
[51:09] Speaker 3: as I've been there, when Tiger's not playing, the Tiger
[51:15] Speaker 3: roar hits different. Like, there is a difference even between
[51:24] Speaker 3: a tiger roar and a hole-in-one roar, which a hole-in-one
[51:28] Speaker 3: roar is crazy. But when Tiger's making a move and
[51:33] Speaker 3: you're on a hole and he makes a birdie and
[51:35] Speaker 3: does a fist pump, because Augusta doesn't allow phones and everyone,
[51:43] Speaker 3: and this is the one other reason why I love Augusta,
[51:46] Speaker 3: everyone who's there at the Masters, has to be engaged
[51:51] Speaker 3: in the moment where you are. There's no checking, let
[51:55] Speaker 3: me see where somebody else is. There is getting, I
[51:58] Speaker 3: got an alert and something's going on outside even the
[52:02] Speaker 3: gates or even inside. There's no, you have to be
[52:06] Speaker 3: present in the moment of where you are. So when
[52:10] Speaker 3: Tiger does something and you're at that spot, the only
[52:15] Speaker 3: thing for you to do is be in that moment,
[52:18] Speaker 3: in that spot. So the explosion of emotion for the fans,
[52:23] Speaker 3: it still gives me goosebumps talking about.
[52:27] Speaker 2: It.
[52:27] Speaker 3: It only happens at Augusta. It only happens at the
[52:31] Speaker 3: Masters because of how they are.
[52:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, the presence in the moment.
[52:37] Speaker 3: It's why people at Augusta, you're not called a fan,
[52:40] Speaker 3: you're a patron.
[52:41] Speaker 1: Right, right.
[52:42] Speaker 3: There's no such thing. You don't make that slip up
[52:45] Speaker 3: when you're on TV. The people that are there to
[52:49] Speaker 3: watch golf, they're patrons. Every other tournament, you got fans.
[52:53] Speaker 3: Augusta got patrons. And that's the historic nature of that place.
[52:58] Speaker 3: So when Tiger has a roar, if you're over on
[53:01] Speaker 3: a hole on the other side of the golf course,
[53:04] Speaker 3: the way that that sound comes through those pine trees,
[53:08] Speaker 3: and then, as I said, it's two things. The second
[53:11] Speaker 3: thing that happens is all of those scoreboards that are
[53:15] Speaker 3: not electronic, the score has to be changed manually. So
[53:19] Speaker 3: what happens is they have in that scoreboard, there's like
[53:24] Speaker 3: a long strip and where the name Woods will be
[53:28] Speaker 3: up there and the score will be up there. And
[53:31] Speaker 3: what happens is then the score itself. Let me see
[53:33] Speaker 3: if I can show the score. So this is the
[53:36] Speaker 3: card that has the score on it. The score will
[53:39] Speaker 3: be here, the thing will drop, and then the patrons
[53:43] Speaker 3: will only see a blank space, so you know something's coming.
[53:47] Speaker 3: And then, boop, when it pops up with the new score,
[53:51] Speaker 3: whether it's a birdie or an eagle, the crowd in
[53:55] Speaker 3: that space, then you'll hear, whoa! And so, Tiger... was
[54:03] Speaker 3: controlling the crowds around the Masters, not just on the
[54:10] Speaker 3: holes he was on, but on all the holes that
[54:14] Speaker 3: had those manual scoreboards because as soon as they flipped
[54:18] Speaker 3: and put that new score up and you see his name,
[54:20] Speaker 3: now they got to move Woods up. Now they got
[54:22] Speaker 3: to put the new score. And it was, oh! And
[54:25] Speaker 3: if you're a dude, like you're getting ready to hit
[54:28] Speaker 3: a putt, like just save par. And now... You're getting
[54:33] Speaker 3: ready to stand over it and quack, quack. You just
[54:36] Speaker 3: backed off. You got no chance of making that putt. None.
[54:40] Speaker 2: And look, he comes out of that third round. He's
[54:43] Speaker 2: up one stroke on Phil Mickelson. So that's the pairing, right?
[54:46] Speaker 2: It's Tiger and Phil coming down the end of this.
[54:49] Speaker 2: And you look at the top 10. at the end
[54:51] Speaker 2: of the third round of that tournament, and it's a
[54:53] Speaker 2: bunch of dudes who won major championships.
[54:55] Speaker 1: Mark Alcavecchia, Adel.
[54:57] Speaker 2: Cabrera, David Duvall, Ernie Els, Lee Jansen, Jose Maria Odetabal. Like,
[55:02] Speaker 2: it's a bunch of dudes. Rocco Mediate, who wound up
[55:04] Speaker 2: playing in that U.S. Open playoff in 2008 with Tiger. Like,
[55:09] Speaker 2: it's a bunch of dudes behind him going into this
[55:12] Speaker 2: final round.
[55:13] Speaker 3: It's names that everybody know. And yet, the two titans,
[55:17] Speaker 3: you know what it was on Sunday? Sunday... Everyone went
[55:23] Speaker 3: to church in the morning and just went, I just
[55:25] Speaker 3: want to say thank you. I just want to, I
[55:28] Speaker 3: know it's a lot of times that I ask for
[55:31] Speaker 3: things that you don't deliver on and I still got
[55:33] Speaker 3: to be thankful. But today I might put just a
[55:38] Speaker 3: little extra in the collection plate just because I know what's,
[55:46] Speaker 3: the two dudes that we always dream of seeing in
[55:49] Speaker 3: a major championship battle are about to do battle for
[55:55] Speaker 3: the green jacket. And we know what's on the line
[55:58] Speaker 3: for tiger.
[55:59] Speaker 1: Right.
[56:00] Speaker 3: And so I don't know a time either. Like when,
[56:07] Speaker 3: other than, everyone has different specific moments. For you, it
[56:10] Speaker 3: was 1996. You're like, I don't even know why I
[56:13] Speaker 3: turned on the Masters in 1996, as you said when
[56:16] Speaker 3: you were watching. But I know, like, I was enthralled
[56:19] Speaker 3: by it. Like you said, you were enthralled by watching
[56:22] Speaker 3: the collapse of Greg Norman and how Nick Faldo ended
[56:25] Speaker 3: up winning. And it was just like, when you turned
[56:27] Speaker 3: it on, you were just like, I can't... It could
[56:30] Speaker 3: have been something crazy. You'd be like, oh, man, there's
[56:32] Speaker 3: a kitten in a tree. That kitten's in a tree
[56:34] Speaker 3: until this is over. Like, you're going to watch.
[56:38] Speaker 3: That 2001 Masters with that final group, I don't remember
[56:45] Speaker 3: a time when more people who had no interest in
[56:49] Speaker 3: golf whatsoever at the time sat down and watched it.
[56:55] Speaker 3: From the moment that that mug came on CBS, everybody
[57:00] Speaker 3: was like, we're watching this. I'm like, we're not even
[57:04] Speaker 3: into golf. I need to see this. And they was like,
[57:09] Speaker 3: what does birdie mean? It means you played the whole
[57:12] Speaker 3: one shot better than what you were supposed to. What
[57:14] Speaker 3: does bogey mean? Bogey means you played one shot worse.
[57:17] Speaker 3: Just watch, man.
[57:17] Speaker 1: Shut up.
[57:20] Speaker 3: There were people who were like, holy cow, there are
[57:23] Speaker 3: people watching golf that don't care about golf. And so...
[57:31] Speaker 3: I think it was an impactful Sunday in a way
[57:35] Speaker 3: that is hard to measure. Because then so many people
[57:40] Speaker 3: after the fact stuck around. And that's where I say
[57:45] Speaker 3: it's immeasurable. Because we know people watch golf every now
[57:48] Speaker 3: and then for major championships, especially the Masters. And then
[57:52] Speaker 3: the golf is gone. Maybe something crazy is happening. We'll
[57:55] Speaker 3: flip it on and watch it for a couple of
[57:56] Speaker 3: hours or something like that. But we're not emotionally invested
[57:59] Speaker 3: in the game. But I think at that 2000 Masters,
[58:03] Speaker 3: after the fact, people stayed and became emotionally invested in
[58:09] Speaker 3: golf where they had never been before.
[58:14] Speaker 2: And it's interesting because Tiger had three more years after
[58:18] Speaker 2: this where he won multiple majors. There's the 2008 playoff
[58:22] Speaker 2: where he's playing on the broken leg. There is his
[58:24] Speaker 2: 2019 Masters, which is his analog to the Jack Nicklaus, uh,
[58:29] Speaker 2: 1986 masters, right? Like the one, one more for you go, right?
[58:32] Speaker 2: Like you went ahead and got that one, but it was, it,
[58:36] Speaker 2: it never felt quite the same as it did that year.
[58:39] Speaker 2: He was still Tiger Woods after that, right? Like the,
[58:42] Speaker 2: the magnitude. And I would be inclined to say he
[58:45] Speaker 2: became a better golfer after that. Like, I don't think
[58:47] Speaker 2: he got worse after 2000. Well, you have to remember.
[58:50] Speaker 3: Too, like he also, after 2000, then, After 2001, he
[58:56] Speaker 3: changed his swing again. Remember, it was after 2001. That's
[59:02] Speaker 3: when he also then, him and Butch split. And that's
[59:06] Speaker 3: when Hank Haney came in. And so, like... when he
[59:10] Speaker 3: went into another dominant phase in 2006 and 2007, that was...
[59:15] Speaker 3: Haney was his swing coach then. And it was another
[59:18] Speaker 3: period where everybody was like, holy cow, this dude completely
[59:21] Speaker 3: changed his swing again and started dominating. Now, was it
[59:23] Speaker 3: the same feel as 2000, 2001?
[59:25] Speaker 4: No.
[59:25] Speaker 1: No.
[59:25] Speaker 3: And here's... And you know this too, man, because me
[59:33] Speaker 3: and you have had this conversation before. And you've seen
[59:36] Speaker 3: me have conversations with people like this as recently as
[59:42] Speaker 3: five years ago. When people were like, hey, man, you
[59:46] Speaker 3: think Tiger's coming back? Like, is Tiger going to be back?
[59:51] Speaker 3: Having to tell people that went through that time in
[59:54] Speaker 3: 2000 and 2001, hey, man. that dude is not, he gone.
[1:00:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:00:03] Speaker 3: It's hard to make people believe that dude, he don't
[1:00:07] Speaker 3: exist anymore.
[1:00:09] Speaker 2: It's like what people talk about is the U back. Like,
[1:00:12] Speaker 2: do you know what the U was?
[1:00:15] Speaker 1: Right? Is Florida State back? Top five, 14 years in
[1:00:19] Speaker 1: a row? I don't know if I can say that.
[1:00:21] Speaker 1: I don't think so.
[1:00:24] Speaker 3: Yeah. And it is too, like, And I don't, and
[1:00:29] Speaker 3: I'm not saying this as a shot, but like, so
[1:00:34] Speaker 3: Bobby Jones wins all, he wins the Grand Slam and
[1:00:39] Speaker 3: then walks away from golf. And like, we have a
[1:00:42] Speaker 3: couple of guys who are dominant and like in flashes
[1:00:46] Speaker 3: and moments and stuff, but then Nicholas comes along and
[1:00:50] Speaker 3: Bobby Jones says about Jack Nicholas, he plays a game
[1:00:53] Speaker 3: with which I'm not familiar, right? And now we see
[1:00:56] Speaker 3: Nicholas take the mantle of, He's the dude who everybody
[1:01:01] Speaker 3: thinks is like, when he's at his best, I can't
[1:01:03] Speaker 3: beat him. Right? And there'll never be another Jack Nicklaus
[1:01:08] Speaker 3: until Tiger comes along. And Jack then has to say
[1:01:12] Speaker 3: the same thing about Tiger. He plays a game with
[1:01:15] Speaker 3: which I'm not familiar. And now we see Tiger have
[1:01:19] Speaker 3: that time where everyone in golf says, he plays a
[1:01:24] Speaker 3: game with which I'm not familiar. And when he's at
[1:01:27] Speaker 3: his best, knowing I can't beat him, right? We are
[1:01:31] Speaker 3: now in a period where Tiger is still around. And
[1:01:34] Speaker 3: it's like Jack after 1986, right? He was still around.
[1:01:38] Speaker 3: Like he had that flash in 1986 when he won
[1:01:41] Speaker 3: the Masters, right? Where it was like, this dude kind
[1:01:44] Speaker 3: of came out of nowhere and had that flash where
[1:01:46] Speaker 3: it was like, and we saw the last time Tiger
[1:01:49] Speaker 3: won the Masters was like, there was that same type
[1:01:53] Speaker 3: of moment. But because we lived through 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007,
[1:02:00] Speaker 3: where like, you think he can still do it again?
[1:02:05] Speaker 3: And it's like, I would love to be the guy,
[1:02:10] Speaker 3: give you hope. I would love to give you hope.
[1:02:12] Speaker 3: But the dudes that are out there now are playing
[1:02:16] Speaker 3: a game that Tiger doesn't play. Yeah.
[1:02:21] Speaker 2: And people also misunderstood this, the idea that you can
[1:02:24] Speaker 2: play golf forever.
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: You can play golf forever.
[1:02:27] Speaker 2: But it is still, it's either a young, it's a
[1:02:30] Speaker 2: young man's game and it's a middle-aged game, but only
[1:02:33] Speaker 2: two guys have truly been great, both young and middle-aged.
[1:02:36] Speaker 2: Jack Nichols and Gary Player, the only two guys to
[1:02:38] Speaker 2: win multiple majors on both sides of 35. Because remember,
[1:02:41] Speaker 2: the car accident is in 2009. He turns 35 in
[1:02:46] Speaker 2: December of 2010. The odds were always against him on
[1:02:51] Speaker 2: that backside. That's before we even get into all the
[1:02:53] Speaker 2: physical wear and tear of that he had endured.
[1:02:56] Speaker 1: But I think, what was it? Tom Watson won 11
[1:02:58] Speaker 1: majors by 33. Right. Never won another. this happens.
[1:03:02] Speaker 2: Like Sam Snead, Phil Mickelson, examples of guys who won
[1:03:06] Speaker 2: all those majors after 35. Like, it's really hard to
[1:03:10] Speaker 2: be excellent at that game for a really long time.
[1:03:12] Speaker 2: It's Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, for people who don't know,
[1:03:15] Speaker 2: he's like goddamn Jack LaLanne, right? Out there doing all
[1:03:18] Speaker 2: the push-ups and sit-ups and all of that stuff. Like,
[1:03:21] Speaker 2: he's a physical, like, he's an unreal physical specimen in
[1:03:24] Speaker 2: terms of longevity.
[1:03:25] Speaker 3: And if we're being honest, too, when it comes to
[1:03:27] Speaker 3: Gary Player, like, he's like Jack LaLanne. You're like, oh, shit,
[1:03:30] Speaker 3: here come crazy.
[1:03:31] Speaker 4: Yep.
[1:03:34] Speaker 1: There he is.
[1:03:34] Speaker 3: I love the depth. This is going to be off
[1:03:36] Speaker 3: the rails. Here come crazy.
[1:03:38] Speaker 1: Don't answer too many questions about South African politics. You
[1:03:41] Speaker 1: never know what you might get.
[1:03:42] Speaker 3: Don't ask politics, period. Don't ask politics, man. We all
[1:03:46] Speaker 3: getting canceled. Don't ask no politics.
[1:03:48] Speaker 2: But no, but we had that run with Tiger and
[1:03:50] Speaker 2: we all were like, well, he's going to pass Jack Nicklaus,
[1:03:52] Speaker 2: not quite understanding what the arc was and how a
[1:03:56] Speaker 2: golf career actually progresses. But for me, it's one of
[1:03:59] Speaker 2: those where it's like, Maybe it's because I wasn't as
[1:04:02] Speaker 2: invested in golf, or maybe it doesn't matter to me
[1:04:05] Speaker 2: that he did not get to 19 majors. It doesn't
[1:04:07] Speaker 2: matter to me that he didn't get to 15 majors.
[1:04:10] Speaker 2: I was there for what it was. Yes.
[1:04:13] Speaker 1: And even the.
[1:04:13] Speaker 2: People who were there for what it was with Jack Nicklaus,
[1:04:16] Speaker 2: it wasn't that.
[1:04:17] Speaker 1: Like, they're not even saying it was that.
[1:04:19] Speaker 3: Well, the thing, too, is, like, everyone, including Jack Nicklaus,
[1:04:23] Speaker 3: way back in the day, like, after this 2000, 2001,
[1:04:25] Speaker 3: Jack Nicklaus... said, Tiger's going to beat my major record
[1:04:32] Speaker 3: and he should do it pretty easily as long as.
[1:04:37] Speaker 3: And the as long as with everyone out there was
[1:04:40] Speaker 3: he stays healthy. I mean, and Tiger's not the only...
[1:04:47] Speaker 3: You can go wait. If we do a football analogy,
[1:04:50] Speaker 3: like what would Gale Sayers have been? I never saw
[1:04:53] Speaker 3: Gale Sayers. All I seen was highlights. But it was
[1:04:55] Speaker 3: like the dude who I know growing up who was
[1:04:58] Speaker 3: going to be the great. What would Bo Jackson have done?
[1:05:02] Speaker 3: That's the greatest comparison that you can make. Because everyone
[1:05:07] Speaker 3: looked and was like, oh, this is a breed of
[1:05:11] Speaker 3: athlete we don't know. We haven't seen. And so for him, too.
[1:05:18] Speaker 3: to be now when you look at tiger and you're like, if,
[1:05:20] Speaker 3: if he would have stayed healthy. And so for everyone else,
[1:05:24] Speaker 3: you look at where you like, you know, there are
[1:05:26] Speaker 3: sometimes you look at and be like, we got to,
[1:05:28] Speaker 3: what do the numbers tell you? Sometimes that's a great thing,
[1:05:34] Speaker 3: but there are other times it's like, yeah, the numbers
[1:05:37] Speaker 3: can tell you something, but also the people that were
[1:05:43] Speaker 3: there in the moment with him, and then the greats
[1:05:46] Speaker 3: of the past that are still around and saw it
[1:05:50] Speaker 3: as well and went, yeah, that dude, better.
[1:05:56] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:05:57] Speaker 3: And it's... I hope people understand that it's easy for
[1:06:01] Speaker 3: us who aren't athletes at that level or anyone at
[1:06:07] Speaker 3: levels like that. It is not easy to.
[1:06:13] Speaker 3: Humble yourself. It's not easy to say, I was the best.
[1:06:19] Speaker 3: And now someone's better than me. Right? Like, you don't
[1:06:25] Speaker 3: want to, it's hard to give that title up because
[1:06:31] Speaker 3: you understood what it took to get there and be there.
[1:06:33] Speaker 3: And so to be able to look at another athlete
[1:06:36] Speaker 3: in the same sport and say, yeah, that dude had
[1:06:40] Speaker 3: some skills that I didn't possess. It's not easy to do.
[1:06:44] Speaker 3: So when, yes, Tiger's not catching Jack's record or breaking
[1:06:49] Speaker 3: that record, but is he the greatest golfer of all time?
[1:06:57] Speaker 3: It's going to be hard to say that dude's not
[1:07:01] Speaker 3: the GOAT. Like, I don't know someone who says, you know,
[1:07:06] Speaker 3: Jack was better than Tiger. And it's the comparison, too.
[1:07:09] Speaker 3: It's like, well, Jack played against more Hall of Famers.
[1:07:12] Speaker 3: We'll see. We'll see. And I love Jack to death.
[1:07:17] Speaker 3: I love him to death. I love Tiger to death
[1:07:19] Speaker 3: and stuff like that. But if you put me in
[1:07:23] Speaker 3: a room and strap me to a chair and there
[1:07:26] Speaker 3: was some torture devices around, I'm going to say Tiger
[1:07:31] Speaker 3: is the GOAT. He's the Billy GOAT. Jack is close.
[1:07:35] Speaker 3: He's up there too. Jack's a GOAT. Is he the
[1:07:39] Speaker 3: GOAT that got the biggest horns and stands on the
[1:07:42] Speaker 3: top of the bridge? nah he stands just back from
[1:07:45] Speaker 3: the bridge and he's looking at it like you know
[1:07:47] Speaker 3: that used to be my bridge remember.
[1:07:49] Speaker 2: That ladies and gentlemen that is michael collins check him
[1:07:53] Speaker 2: out at espn covering golf my man will have to
[1:07:57] Speaker 2: do it again brother thank you so much.

[1:08:12] Speaker 3: you don't know this, but you inspire me, man. And
[1:08:15] Speaker 3: thank you for that, bro.
