Bomani Jones starts off today's show by reacting to the Monday Night Football game between the Falcons and the Bills, and concludes that there is not yet a dominant team in the NFL. Later, he discusses his continuing fascination with the Penn State-James Franklin story and decides he already knows who Franklin's replacement will be. Finally, he breaks down Belichick's denial of trying to leave UNC, THC drinks at Target, and has a shocking opinion about Turning Point USA trying to counterprogram Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime show. 00:25 - Monday Night Football Reaction 12:40 - Penn State's next step 28:30 - Bill Belichick: Still Unhappy 36:35 - Counterprogramming Bad Bunny Learn more about your ad choices. [0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. I got a couple more thoughts about what's
[0:23] Speaker 1: going on at Penn State. We'll get to that in
[0:25] Speaker 1: a minute, but we are coming off of some Monday
[0:27] Speaker 1: Night Football that was interesting to me. Buffalo lost to
[0:33] Speaker 1: the Atlanta Falcons, which... I mean, of course, and obviously,
[0:39] Speaker 1: it's the kind of thing that, you know, may people
[0:43] Speaker 1: lose respect for you. But the Falcons are actually not
[0:45] Speaker 1: so bad this year. And I've talked about this on
[0:50] Speaker 1: this show before, and I need to say this again,
[0:53] Speaker 1: and I think that this is something that people lose
[0:55] Speaker 1: and forget. There is nothing better. All right, so, okay,
[1:01] Speaker 1: I will say this two things. There are two things
[1:05] Speaker 1: in football that nothing tops. One on offense, one on defense.
[1:10] Speaker 1: On defense, it is a broader category, which is the
[1:15] Speaker 1: heat-seeking missile, right? There are many different types of heat-seeking missiles.
[1:22] Speaker 1: But when there is a heat-seeking missile, there's nothing more
[1:25] Speaker 1: fun than to watch a heat-seeking missile. So Lawrence Taylor, obviously,
[1:28] Speaker 1: is an example of a heat-seeking missile. Ray Lewis is
[1:33] Speaker 1: a slightly different aesthetic, but a heat-seeking missile. Troy Palamalu,
[1:38] Speaker 1: who's like a decathlete, sort of heat-seeking missile. He is
[1:41] Speaker 1: a heat-seeking missile. Michael Parsons, I think, fits in the category. Like,
[1:45] Speaker 1: it's one thing when a guy is really good, and
[1:47] Speaker 1: it can be kind of fun when it's like Reggie White,
[1:50] Speaker 1: who's not quite a heat-seeking missile, but Reggie White is like,
[1:52] Speaker 1: I'm so strong, and I never lift weights. You know
[1:56] Speaker 1: what I mean? Like there's those sorts of guys, but
[1:58] Speaker 1: the heat-seeking missile is one thing. But number one, at
[2:02] Speaker 1: the top of the list, something that a whole generation
[2:05] Speaker 1: of youth really don't know nothing about, and that is the,
[2:11] Speaker 1: oh my God, I can't believe how good you are
[2:14] Speaker 1: running back. Just flat out, I can't believe how talented
[2:20] Speaker 1: you are. And Ryan, that guy's name is B. John Robinson.
[2:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, when you see him breaking that 81-yard run,
[2:31] Speaker 2: you feel like he's able to do that every time.
[2:32] Speaker 2: I mean, you've gotten glimpses of that with peak Saquon,
[2:36] Speaker 2: but there isn't really... Obviously when Derrick Henry is really rolling,
[2:41] Speaker 2: but you don't see a lot of that in the
[2:42] Speaker 2: last five years.
[2:43] Speaker 1: So like with Derrick Henry, it's a slightly different thing
[2:45] Speaker 1: because he's just so big and strong, right? But he's
[2:49] Speaker 1: big and strong and obviously not slow, like fast. I
[2:53] Speaker 1: don't want to say adequate speed because that's not fair,
[2:55] Speaker 1: but he's not Earl Campbell. Have you ever looked at
[2:58] Speaker 1: college clips of Earl Campbell?
[2:59] Speaker 2: It's been a long time.
[3:00] Speaker 1: Okay. So NFL clips of Earl Campbell or Earl Campbell
[3:04] Speaker 1: putting his head in people's chest and running through them.
[3:06] Speaker 1: What you don't realize until you watch college Earl Campbell
[3:10] Speaker 1: clips is just how fast he was because college Earl
[3:12] Speaker 1: Campbell clips are him running by people.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Right.
[3:15] Speaker 1: Like like like they couldn't even get close enough for
[3:17] Speaker 1: him to do the actual Earl Campbell stuff. Right. Derrick
[3:21] Speaker 1: Henry at every level felt more like pro Earl Campbell,
[3:24] Speaker 1: but not the guy that just runs away from you.
[3:28] Speaker 1: Bijan look like he's whatever those, whatever it is that
[3:30] Speaker 1: you want. Like, if we could have gone back to
[3:32] Speaker 1: the days of the 30 carry running back, Bijan's the
[3:36] Speaker 1: guy everybody wants to be like. Like, he's that dude.
[3:40] Speaker 1: Can you imagine if you had Bijan playing with, oh,
[3:46] Speaker 1: how about this? Not even playing with. Do the Falcons
[3:48] Speaker 1: play against the Cowboys this year? If so, I can't wait.
[3:54] Speaker 1: Some dude named Rico, just took 30 carries against the
[3:58] Speaker 1: Make-A-Wish Foundation and ran for damn near 200 yards. Damn,
[4:01] Speaker 1: they don't play. Can the Falcons trade Bijan to somebody
[4:04] Speaker 1: who played the Cowboys this year? Because he might run
[4:07] Speaker 1: for 400 yards, right? Man, I love watching that dude play.
[4:11] Speaker 1: I'm all for that narcotic. Don't get me wrong. I'll
[4:14] Speaker 1: also make this other point about the Falcons as I
[4:15] Speaker 1: have gone on this detour that I did not expect.
[4:19] Speaker 1: I think we all generally agree that the Falcons overdrafted
[4:24] Speaker 1: by position with a handful of guys, right? I think
[4:28] Speaker 1: we felt that way about Pennix. We felt that way about, well,
[4:31] Speaker 1: y'all felt that way about Bijan. I was drafting that dude.
[4:39] Speaker 2: Okay.
[4:41] Speaker 1: Even Drake London to a degree, but Kyle Pitts, I guess,
[4:44] Speaker 1: is the other one that people talked about. Hey, man,
[4:46] Speaker 1: that offense full of those overdrafted guys... looked pretty good.
[4:50] Speaker 1: They didn't score enough points, but they looked pretty good.
[4:53] Speaker 1: Sometimes you got to do it. But anyway, the lesson
[4:55] Speaker 1: I was taking from that game is that Buffalo is good,
[4:58] Speaker 1: not great. Because while their defense is not the Make-A-Wish foundation,
[5:03] Speaker 1: you can run the ball on them pretty easily. They
[5:06] Speaker 1: were out there. The Bears and the Commandos, that looked
[5:10] Speaker 1: like a heaping helping of aight. They're just aight. And
[5:16] Speaker 1: as I look around it, The league got a bunch
[5:20] Speaker 1: of aight right now. Think about this for a second.
[5:25] Speaker 1: I'm not alone in this, and maybe not all of
[5:27] Speaker 1: you agree, but I do feel like a lot of
[5:29] Speaker 1: you do. Kansas City beat America's team. That unfortunately is
[5:36] Speaker 1: giving a little bit more aight right now than I
[5:38] Speaker 1: would prefer. Plus, that little janky suspension against Brian Brandt.
[5:45] Speaker 1: I mean, come on, man. That dude had a helmet on.
[5:48] Speaker 1: He just slapped him in the face. But anyway, they
[5:52] Speaker 1: look aight. But the Chiefs, who, it wasn't just but
[5:55] Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago, we were like, ooh, I don't know,
[5:57] Speaker 1: I think the whole thing is over. I am convinced
[5:59] Speaker 1: they're going to the Super Bowl now. At three and three. Why?
[6:04] Speaker 1: Because the rest of the league is just aight. Right?
[6:08] Speaker 1: You know what the rest of the league is?
[6:13] Speaker 2: I believe, as Kim Ward put it, to keep it
[6:15] Speaker 2: a buck, they're ass.
[6:17] Speaker 1: Yes. There's a lot of that. I was going with
[6:21] Speaker 1: what the kids mean when they say mid.
[6:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
[6:25] Speaker 1: Which is, by the way, fairly synonymous with ass in
[6:27] Speaker 1: the way that they talk about it. But there's a
[6:29] Speaker 1: lot of keister in the NFL right now. NFL got
[6:33] Speaker 1: a lot of keister. Name the great team. You can't. Again,
[6:37] Speaker 1: the team with the best point differential league by far
[6:39] Speaker 1: is the Indianapolis Colts. I'm not ready, right? Are you ready?
[6:44] Speaker 2: No.
[6:44] Speaker 1: No. Let me tell you something. If I can't believe
[6:49] Speaker 1: it's Sam Darnold yet, if I'm still holding out on
[6:52] Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, I don't know what Daniel Jones got to do.
[6:55] Speaker 3: No.
[6:56] Speaker 2: No, I'm not having. I won't do it.
[7:00] Speaker 1: I can't believe it. Yeah. I just refuse. I just refuse.
[7:05] Speaker 1: But we were getting ready to do this show today,
[7:07] Speaker 1: and I was looking at the standings. Do you realize
[7:11] Speaker 1: that 25% of the NFL right now is keistered? A
[7:16] Speaker 1: full on 25%. The Dolphins, the Jets, the Bengals, the Ravens,
[7:23] Speaker 1: the Browns, the Titans, the Raiders, and the Saints. Didn't
[7:31] Speaker 1: forget about you guys. Keister. Everywhere you look is Keister.
[7:38] Speaker 1: The AFC North is the Steelers and the Keister. That's right.
[7:45] Speaker 1: Everybody in that division right now stinks. And the Titans.
[7:53] Speaker 1: Now that's Keister. They just fired their coach, by the way.
[7:58] Speaker 1: They fired Brian Callahan. They made Mike McCoy the interim coach.
[8:03] Speaker 1: And you got to wonder how much it is Keister
[8:07] Speaker 1: in the NFL right now got some nervous coaches. Because
[8:10] Speaker 1: once the first one goes, all y'all are on notice, right? Like,
[8:13] Speaker 1: it just, it feels like it goes that way. I
[8:17] Speaker 1: don't think the Jets can afford to fire Aaron Glenn
[8:20] Speaker 1: in the middle of the season, but damn it, he
[8:22] Speaker 1: trying to see. I can't believe Mike McDaniel still worked there.
[8:27] Speaker 1: I feel like every time we do a show, I
[8:29] Speaker 1: need to offer the caveat of what time that show
[8:31] Speaker 1: was recorded and that by the time you hear this,
[8:33] Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel might get fired because it just feels totally
[8:36] Speaker 1: like it's on the board. As a big fan of
[8:39] Speaker 1: both Beat Carol and Geno Smith, it's a little disappointing
[8:44] Speaker 1: how much keesher they are, but to be fair, That
[8:47] Speaker 1: is a lot of individual keister and collective keister. That's like,
[8:51] Speaker 1: what was that quote you sent me, Ryan, about the
[8:53] Speaker 1: Titans that the only good player they got is Jeffrey Simmons?
[8:58] Speaker 2: I believe one of the Raiders coaches, I'm going to
[8:59] Speaker 2: pull up the quote now. This might be the worst
[9:04] Speaker 2: team I've seen in the last 25 years. They don't
[9:06] Speaker 2: have any difference makers other than Jeffrey Simmons, and the
[9:10] Speaker 2: whole thing was a total mess.
[9:12] Speaker 1: Ryan, think about two things. Two things before you go, right?
[9:15] Speaker 1: On that. Number one, In the last 25 years, we
[9:18] Speaker 1: have seen not one, but two teams go winless.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Correct.
[9:23] Speaker 1: Okay. Number two, who did you say said that?
[9:26] Speaker 2: A Raiders coach.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Who does he watch every day?
[9:30] Speaker 2: The Raiders.
[9:31] Speaker 1: The Raiders. Every day he watches the Raiders and he
[9:35] Speaker 1: saw that team, it was like, ooh, those guys stink. Like, what? Like,
[9:43] Speaker 1: my buddy Matt in Kentucky, he tells this story. And
[9:45] Speaker 1: if you guys know my buddy Matt, Matt is from,
[9:47] Speaker 1: I believe, Middlesbrough, Kentucky. And he sounds largely like he's
[9:49] Speaker 1: from Middlesbrough, Kentucky, which I find to be just fine.
[9:52] Speaker 1: But he said once that he used to had his
[9:54] Speaker 1: professor this is british cat and they were riding around
[9:57] Speaker 1: somewhere and they were somewhere in deepest darkest north carolina
[10:00] Speaker 1: and they pulled up on somebody and the guy asked
[10:03] Speaker 1: matt where he was from and matt says well you
[10:06] Speaker 1: know i'm from bell county and he said the guy
[10:09] Speaker 1: matt does a super d-bag saying he's like you're from
[10:12] Speaker 1: bell county oh Y'all got some real rednecks down there.
[10:18] Speaker 1: And he said that British guy looked up and was
[10:21] Speaker 1: mortified at the idea that this man that they were
[10:25] Speaker 1: talking to who sounded like that believed that there was
[10:28] Speaker 1: a place that had a greater quality of rurality than
[10:33] Speaker 1: the place that he was in. He just couldn't believe it. Anyway,
[10:36] Speaker 1: that's how I think that Raiders coach had to feel
[10:39] Speaker 1: when he looked up and he saw that there was
[10:40] Speaker 1: somebody even more keister than the guys that he's around
[10:44] Speaker 1: every day but I bring this all up to say
[10:46] Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out what to make of this
[10:50] Speaker 1: like we've got a league right now that doesn't have
[10:52] Speaker 1: any team with a high ceiling and a lot of
[10:54] Speaker 1: teams that seem to be sorry and by the way
[10:58] Speaker 1: sorry Interestingly, enough of these teams actually have quarterbacks, right?
[11:04] Speaker 1: Like the Ravens have a quarterback, the Bengals have a quarterback. Now, granted,
[11:08] Speaker 1: part of why these guys are sorry is because they
[11:10] Speaker 1: don't have their quarterbacks, but they also look fairly sorry
[11:13] Speaker 1: when they did have their quarterbacks. The Dolphins don't have
[11:16] Speaker 1: a quarterback. The Jets don't have a quarterback. The Titans
[11:19] Speaker 1: feel like they have a quarterback. The Raiders have a quarterback.
[11:23] Speaker 1: Their quarterback is a player right now, and it doesn't
[11:25] Speaker 1: look like they have a quarterback in the future. And
[11:27] Speaker 1: the Saints... do not have a quarterback and there is
[11:31] Speaker 1: no help on the way. It's not there. Watch college football.
[11:38] Speaker 1: Listen to the names that people are talking about. Somebody's
[11:41] Speaker 1: going to probably do it with Carson Beck because at
[11:43] Speaker 1: the very least he has looked the part. And I
[11:44] Speaker 1: don't mean that in a patronizing way. He's big, strong,
[11:46] Speaker 1: and it looks good when he throws the football. Maybe
[11:49] Speaker 1: that's going to be the guy that you wind up with,
[11:51] Speaker 1: but no help is coming. But we got a league
[11:54] Speaker 1: right now that is just really largely populated with by
[11:58] Speaker 1: a bunch of mid, and then a.
[12:03] Speaker 2: Lot, a lot of Reggie.
[12:06] Speaker 1: It's almost a lot of Reggie. It's almost offensive because
[12:10] Speaker 1: if you hit the Reggie hard enough and for long enough,
[12:13] Speaker 1: it'll do the job. You can't smoke enough Titans to
[12:18] Speaker 1: get you where you want to go. You can't roll
[12:21] Speaker 1: up enough Browns to make you feel good. All you're
[12:24] Speaker 1: going to do is get a headache. The NFL, 25% headache.
[12:30] Speaker 1: All right, so we were talking about Penn State and
[12:41] Speaker 1: what happened with firing James Franklin. And my immediate conclusion
[12:47] Speaker 1: was that, wow, this is crazy because nothing like this
[12:49] Speaker 1: has ever happened. And then I got to thinking about
[12:51] Speaker 1: all the things that I know about kind of sports,
[12:55] Speaker 1: and was like, okay, I understand why this move was made.
[12:59] Speaker 1: Then I found out that his buyout had offset language,
[13:02] Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, okay, this may not even cost
[13:05] Speaker 1: enough money. Franklin's agent didn't do right by him. Jimbo
[13:08] Speaker 1: Fisher had a $ 75 million, I think it was 75,
[13:11] Speaker 1: but either way, he had a lump sum buyout. Franklin
[13:14] Speaker 1: don't got a lump sum. Franklin's got one of those
[13:16] Speaker 1: where they get to trick it out. Like, that was... You, you, you, you, you,
[13:21] Speaker 1: you should have called somebody else.
[13:22] Speaker 2: They get to trick it out. And also he has
[13:25] Speaker 2: to go look for another job.
[13:26] Speaker 1: He does.
[13:26] Speaker 3: Right.
[13:27] Speaker 1: And see, that wouldn't be if it was the lump sum,
[13:28] Speaker 1: it wouldn't be the case.
[13:29] Speaker 3: Right. Right.
[13:30] Speaker 1: So since it goes that way, you have the offset
[13:32] Speaker 1: language says he's got to at least try. And let
[13:34] Speaker 1: me tell you about trying to find a job in
[13:38] Speaker 1: this economy. See what I don't know about those provisions is,
[13:42] Speaker 1: does he have to try to find a job even
[13:44] Speaker 1: if it's beneath his stature?
[13:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure what the language on that is, but, like,
[13:50] Speaker 2: you know, I'm sure he doesn't have to just take
[13:52] Speaker 2: any job.
[13:53] Speaker 1: Right, but, like, if Purdue comes calling, are you telling
[13:55] Speaker 1: me he has to take that?
[13:58] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[13:59] Speaker 1: You know, just know that if they're on Vanderbilt, it's like,
[14:01] Speaker 1: come back home.
[14:01] Speaker 2: He's already done Vanderbilt once. You can't make him do
[14:03] Speaker 2: that again.
[14:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like Arkansas, would he have to do that? Like,
[14:06] Speaker 1: do you have to just take any old goddamn job?
[14:09] Speaker 1: Because I don't know. I don't know about you, brother.
[14:11] Speaker 1: but I've watched quite a few people look for jobs.
[14:15] Speaker 1: Like James Franklin every day. You just go see him
[14:17] Speaker 1: on Twitter with a newspaper and a highlighter with a
[14:19] Speaker 1: picture on Instagram looking for another job. They didn't say
[14:22] Speaker 1: it had to be a coaching job. It could just
[14:24] Speaker 1: be a job. We're going to see James Franklin out
[14:27] Speaker 1: here and volunteering with four people. Out there with a ladle.
[14:32] Speaker 2: Make that happen.
[14:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, but the move. I've talked about this all the time.
[14:37] Speaker 1: Once it stops being fun, then people don't want it anymore.
[14:42] Speaker 1: Also talk to a few more people. I asked the
[14:44] Speaker 1: question on the show, who the money was at Penn state.
[14:47] Speaker 1: And a big part of the money on Penn state
[14:49] Speaker 1: is Terry Pegula, the owner of the Buffalo bills. And
[14:52] Speaker 1: my understanding is James Franklin didn't really, uh, make the
[14:55] Speaker 1: relationship with him, which I find to be very interesting
[15:00] Speaker 1: because James Franklin moves like a dude that knows who
[15:03] Speaker 1: it is that you got to be friends with and
[15:05] Speaker 1: who you got to be cool with. And I would
[15:06] Speaker 1: have thought that that would have been job one. Um,
[15:10] Speaker 1: In that case, like in the end, James Franklin, in
[15:18] Speaker 1: the end, and I think I may have mentioned this
[15:19] Speaker 1: briefly on the last show, but I don't think we
[15:23] Speaker 1: think about him in the proper context. And that context
[15:26] Speaker 1: is he's truly the guy that followed the legend. Bill
[15:31] Speaker 1: O'Brien was only there for two years after the Paterno
[15:35] Speaker 1: thing happened. And it was such chaos that like nobody
[15:38] Speaker 1: was expecting Bill O'Brien to get you to the heights
[15:42] Speaker 1: that you had reached under Joe Paterno. I see a
[15:46] Speaker 1: lot of people making the point that Bill O'Brien was
[15:48] Speaker 1: the guy that rebuilt the program at Penn State. And
[15:52] Speaker 1: I just want to point out that, guys, we don't
[15:55] Speaker 1: need to lie. Like, he held it down, but he
[16:00] Speaker 1: left complaining about this, that, and the third and everything
[16:03] Speaker 1: else so he could go back to the NFL. But
[16:05] Speaker 1: you go look at the actual performance of those teams,
[16:07] Speaker 1: and again, it's not his fault. They were decimated by
[16:09] Speaker 1: all kinds of circumstances. But, I mean, they got a
[16:12] Speaker 1: couple of not bad wins here and there, but that
[16:15] Speaker 1: was not, he didn't do that. The dude that got
[16:19] Speaker 1: Penn State fully to the place where you thought about
[16:22] Speaker 1: them the way you used to think about them is Franklin.
[16:26] Speaker 1: He did that. He's going to probably historically go down
[16:29] Speaker 1: as a very important figure in the history of that program.
[16:33] Speaker 1: But I also think he'll probably go down in the
[16:35] Speaker 1: history of that program, probably as some combination of Earl
[16:40] Speaker 1: Bruce and John Cooper at Ohio State, where Cooper, I think,
[16:47] Speaker 1: demonstrated best the capability that Ohio State could be right
[16:50] Speaker 1: back at the top as it had been pre-integration, right?
[16:54] Speaker 1: That they could do that while also consistently falling short
[16:59] Speaker 1: of what they actually wanted it to be. That's where
[17:02] Speaker 1: I think Franklin's going to go. But Franklin also is
[17:05] Speaker 1: your reminder that fit matters. And how well you fit
[17:11] Speaker 1: culturally at a place really matters. And it especially matters
[17:18] Speaker 1: when you need to buy some time. And so on
[17:22] Speaker 1: the front end of that job, Franklin was given some
[17:25] Speaker 1: time as they were recovering from the sanctions and the
[17:28] Speaker 1: scandal and everything else. On the front end, he had
[17:32] Speaker 1: the time. On the back end, he didn't really have
[17:36] Speaker 1: the time. Because from what it sounds like to me,
[17:41] Speaker 1: even though he is a dude that's from Pennsylvania, they
[17:46] Speaker 1: didn't really see him as fit, okay? Now, I know
[17:51] Speaker 1: some of you are raising in your heads a very
[17:53] Speaker 1: obvious question about what you mean by fit. And I'm
[17:58] Speaker 1: not talking about that, but I'm not saying that isn't
[18:03] Speaker 1: part of it. I don't know this situation well enough, right?
[18:07] Speaker 1: But I do know this. Paterno, similar to Bobby Bout
[18:15] Speaker 1: and a handful of other guys, but I think Paterno
[18:18] Speaker 1: is actually the very last of the coaches who more
[18:27] Speaker 1: so fit the archetype of a gym teacher than the
[18:34] Speaker 1: archetype of a CEO, right? So let me make sure
[18:40] Speaker 1: I'm clear about what I'm saying. A guy like Will
[18:46] Speaker 1: Muschamp obviously fits the archetype. Of a gym teacher. Okay.
[18:53] Speaker 5: He's.
[18:54] Speaker 1: You know what? Actually, Ryan. He's the archetype of the
[18:56] Speaker 1: gym teacher. But they might make him the history teacher.
[18:58] Speaker 1: And then you look up and find out that he
[19:00] Speaker 1: actually knows a lot about history.
[19:02] Speaker 2: Oh, I bet Will Muschamp is unironically very into World
[19:05] Speaker 2: War II.
[19:06] Speaker 1: Yes.
[19:06] Speaker 2: Like just crushing Richard Evans books. You got to be
[19:10] Speaker 2: very careful of the ones who are super into the
[19:12] Speaker 2: Civil War.
[19:13] Speaker 1: Yes.
[19:14] Speaker 2: But the ones who are super into World War II.
[19:16] Speaker 3: Well.
[19:17] Speaker 1: Well, Will is, I believe, in one of those frats.
[19:19] Speaker 1: I can't remember if it's that one or the other one.
[19:21] Speaker 2: Gotcha. I know what you're talking about.
[19:24] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, but he is in one of them. But
[19:27] Speaker 1: I'm trying to... I guess what I'm thinking about is,
[19:29] Speaker 1: or the point that I'm trying to make, is that
[19:32] Speaker 1: Or how about this? This is a better way to
[19:33] Speaker 1: put it. Paterno was a coach before coaches made zillions
[19:37] Speaker 1: of dollars.
[19:37] Speaker 2: Yes.
[19:38] Speaker 3: Right.
[19:38] Speaker 1: And moved with a lifestyle of the old college football
[19:42] Speaker 1: coach that like, oh, lived in the neighborhood where all
[19:44] Speaker 1: the professors lived.
[19:46] Speaker 2: Lived somewhere where he was looked like he was making
[19:48] Speaker 2: five figures, not eight figures.
[19:49] Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
[19:50] Speaker 1: Where like your address and phone number in the phone book,
[19:54] Speaker 1: like you could just pull up to Joe. And we
[19:56] Speaker 1: realized this when Joe Paterno, when it all went bad
[19:58] Speaker 1: and like the people would pull up in front of
[19:59] Speaker 1: his house with the rallies and stuff like that. He
[20:01] Speaker 1: was the last of those guys where the coach felt really,
[20:04] Speaker 1: really approachable or as part of things. Joe Petrano had
[20:08] Speaker 1: that job for like 50 years, right? The entire archetype
[20:12] Speaker 1: of what it was to be a college football coach
[20:14] Speaker 1: changed while he had that job. It even changed around
[20:17] Speaker 1: him as he was more a figurehead for the program
[20:19] Speaker 1: and they changed everything around it, right? But the truth
[20:23] Speaker 1: is the culture of the place that we're talking about
[20:29] Speaker 1: it seems from a distance to still be largely a
[20:32] Speaker 1: culture that has the expectations of a Joe Paterno football
[20:37] Speaker 1: program in terms of results. And that's also probably what
[20:41] Speaker 1: they want a bit in terms of who the head
[20:44] Speaker 1: coach is, right? LSU. And Ryan, you tell me if
[20:48] Speaker 1: I'm wrong here. Forgive me for keep pulling an onion there,
[20:50] Speaker 1: but you guys would like your coach to be kind
[20:53] Speaker 1: of fun.
[20:53] Speaker 2: It would help.
[20:54] Speaker 3: Right.
[20:55] Speaker 1: I mean, even Nick Saban is... maniacal but fun to
[20:59] Speaker 1: watch how maniacal.
[21:00] Speaker 2: He is right he has a personality yes exactly.
[21:03] Speaker 1: There is a personality even if it isn't the most
[21:06] Speaker 1: fun personality all the time there is a personality but
[21:08] Speaker 1: you guys want your coaches to be fun florida they
[21:11] Speaker 1: want their they want their coaches to score points like
[21:12] Speaker 1: everybody has different things that they want from their coaches
[21:15] Speaker 1: but the only way that you ever really know what
[21:17] Speaker 1: a place wants from the coach is if you're kind
[21:19] Speaker 1: of of it And I've done this long way around
[21:23] Speaker 1: to say, go ahead and have the press conference tomorrow
[21:26] Speaker 1: and say you're hiring Matt Rule at the end of
[21:28] Speaker 1: the year. Just go ahead and do it. And here's
[21:33] Speaker 1: the thing that's going to drive James Franklin crazy. They're
[21:36] Speaker 1: going to hire Matt Rule. Matt Rule played at Penn State.
[21:39] Speaker 1: And we'll get to it, but I want to be clear.
[21:43] Speaker 1: I think Matt Rule's a very good college football coach.
[21:47] Speaker 1: He's of the place. He knows how the place moves.
[21:51] Speaker 1: And he has a little bit more personality-wise of a,
[21:57] Speaker 1: seems like more of the approachable college football coach, less
[22:01] Speaker 1: the star college football coach, a little bit closer to
[22:05] Speaker 1: the teacher slash minister. You know, he's the son of
[22:10] Speaker 1: a minister, right? Like he's a little closer to that
[22:13] Speaker 1: archetype of coach. The only thing about that is, He's
[22:21] Speaker 1: got the same problem as James Franklin. He wins a
[22:26] Speaker 1: lot of games. Just not always the ones that you
[22:31] Speaker 1: want him to win. That's the knock on that rule
[22:35] Speaker 1: is performance against top 20 opponents. However, however, however, there
[22:42] Speaker 1: is a giant counterpoint there. And by the way, Ryan,
[22:45] Speaker 1: We need to save this, what we're recording now, for
[22:48] Speaker 1: when they do actually hire Matt Rule. And we can
[22:50] Speaker 1: just go ahead and run it verbatim. Like, everything will
[22:53] Speaker 1: be the same. Do you know where Matt Rule did
[22:56] Speaker 1: all this stuff we're talking about, guys, before he got
[22:59] Speaker 1: to Nebraska? It was at Temple and at Baylor. And
[23:02] Speaker 1: not just, Baylor's a generally awful job. Don't let the
[23:06] Speaker 1: schools in Texas shit fool you. It's in Waco.
[23:09] Speaker 2: And it's... You're at best the... Fourth most important program
[23:13] Speaker 2: in that state.
[23:14] Speaker 1: Maybe it's small and it's a school where they didn't
[23:17] Speaker 1: have no, they didn't have school dances until 1997. And
[23:20] Speaker 1: that is not an exaggeration. In my life, my daddy was,
[23:24] Speaker 1: they can't even dance at Baylor.
[23:26] Speaker 2: You would have heard school in the footloose town.
[23:29] Speaker 1: Yes, that was exactly it. But Matt Rule turned Temple
[23:34] Speaker 1: into a winner. He turned Baylor into a winner. Nebraska
[23:38] Speaker 1: and Penn State are somewhat similar in the sense that
[23:41] Speaker 1: it'll never be what it was at Nebraska in the
[23:43] Speaker 1: way that I don't think it'll ever be what it
[23:45] Speaker 1: was at Penn State. But what it can be at
[23:48] Speaker 1: Penn State is greater than what it can be at Nebraska. Right.
[23:53] Speaker 1: I think that that's all fair. But we have never.
[23:57] Speaker 1: It's one thing to put a program together. It is
[23:59] Speaker 1: another thing to keep one together. And we have never
[24:02] Speaker 1: seen Matt Rule keep one together. Like we saw James Franklin.
[24:06] Speaker 1: We didn't know this really about him at Vanderbilt either.
[24:08] Speaker 1: Could you keep it together? Because he put it to
[24:10] Speaker 1: places that we had never seen. But could you keep
[24:13] Speaker 1: it there?
[24:13] Speaker 2: 12 years at Penn State is a lifetime in college
[24:16] Speaker 2: football coaching.
[24:17] Speaker 1: It is. And I think he kept it. I think
[24:19] Speaker 1: he did. I mean, 34 and eight. That's the most recent.
[24:22] Speaker 2: They were in the top five.
[24:24] Speaker 1: Two weeks ago.
[24:24] Speaker 2: Two weeks ago. Right.
[24:26] Speaker 1: So like he got it there. And it's fair to
[24:28] Speaker 1: say that he demonstrated an ability to keep it there.
[24:31] Speaker 1: That's the question that we're going to have on Matt Rule.
[24:34] Speaker 1: And understand, there are some guys who, for whatever reason,
[24:38] Speaker 1: can't do that. Lou Holtz was historically a great example
[24:44] Speaker 1: of a guy who, at every job, got it there
[24:48] Speaker 1: and could not keep it there. Even with Notre Dame,
[24:51] Speaker 1: he kept it there for a little longer than he
[24:53] Speaker 1: had in Arkansas, but could not keep it there. NC State,
[24:57] Speaker 1: NC State fans famously asked the question, what if Lou
[24:59] Speaker 1: Holtz had stayed? Because Lou Holtz had coached there for
[25:01] Speaker 1: a little while, what our program could have been, and
[25:03] Speaker 1: it would have turned into a different variety of that
[25:05] Speaker 1: same NC State shit that y'all be dealing with at
[25:08] Speaker 1: every point. Lou Holtz, by the way, who got fired,
[25:11] Speaker 1: think about how different the world is. Lou Holtz got
[25:13] Speaker 1: fired in Arkansas, I want to say in 1985. Do
[25:16] Speaker 1: you know why he got fired officially?
[25:17] Speaker 2: I do not.
[25:18] Speaker 1: So it started coming apart football-wise. But remember, I said
[25:22] Speaker 1: Lou Holtz used to be the coach at NC State.
[25:24] Speaker 1: Lou Holtz filmed a campaign ad in his office for
[25:30] Speaker 1: Jesse Helms.
[25:34] Speaker 2: Fired.
[25:35] Speaker 1: Fired. Frank Broyles, Frank Broyles, to be very clear, fired him.
[25:40] Speaker 1: Here's what I find amazing about that story. The idea
[25:46] Speaker 1: that there was a time that campaigning for an overtly
[25:51] Speaker 1: racist Republican could cost you your job in Arkansas. Right. Right?
[25:57] Speaker 1: I mean, keep in mind, this is Bill Clinton's Arkansas. Right.
[26:00] Speaker 1: That we're talking about. But that's how much different the
[26:02] Speaker 1: world is. Back then, you could not get away with
[26:06] Speaker 1: that shit. That was 15 years after, like, full-on integration.
[26:11] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[26:12] Speaker 1: And you could not get away with that. Now you can.
[26:15] Speaker 2: Different world.
[26:17] Speaker 1: But anyway, I don't know if Rule can actually be
[26:19] Speaker 1: the guy to put it together, but it's going to
[26:21] Speaker 1: look funny in the light, and everybody needs to know this,
[26:24] Speaker 1: that they are going to hire somebody whose problem is
[26:28] Speaker 1: that he does the thing or has done the thing
[26:32] Speaker 1: that James Franklin has done. It is not always fair
[26:35] Speaker 1: on his face, but it is an argument to be made.
[26:38] Speaker 1: But the bottom line is Matt Rule is close with
[26:41] Speaker 1: the athletic director. Matt Rule is close with the place.
[26:45] Speaker 1: And they did not fire James Franklin because they were losing.
[26:49] Speaker 1: They fired him because they didn't like how it felt.
[26:52] Speaker 1: And at least for a little while, this is going
[26:55] Speaker 1: to feel a lot better. Football is back and so
[27:04] Speaker 1: is your shot at big wins. With DraftKings Pick 6,

[28:29] Speaker 2: college football, Bill Belichick denied reports of him considering to
[28:33] Speaker 2: buy out, calling the exit categorically false. They play Cal
[28:38] Speaker 2: in a nationally televised game on Friday. Bo, how do
[28:41] Speaker 2: you think this Bill Belichick thing plays out over the
[28:43] Speaker 2: next few weeks?
[28:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, what I take that as is in the words
[28:47] Speaker 1: of the great Stephon Marbury. They're going to give me
[28:51] Speaker 1: all of my money. That's what that is. If Belichick
[28:55] Speaker 1: pursues the buyout, it's Belichick writing them a check for
[28:59] Speaker 1: like a million dollars or something like that and then
[29:01] Speaker 1: getting out of there. There is no way in the
[29:04] Speaker 1: world that Bill Belichick wants to signal that he is
[29:09] Speaker 1: willing to make it easy for them to get rid
[29:12] Speaker 1: of him. But they got to get rid of him. Now,
[29:16] Speaker 1: that's the one where we need to find out exactly
[29:18] Speaker 1: what the offset language is. Now, of course, the problem
[29:21] Speaker 1: for Carolina with offset language is Bill Belichick is he
[29:24] Speaker 1: might be able to get a media job, but his
[29:27] Speaker 1: media job will be like what he was doing before. Right.
[29:29] Speaker 1: Like doing like, you know, something like I don't even
[29:31] Speaker 1: know if inside the NFL still come on, but like
[29:33] Speaker 1: doing a show like that or like a film show.
[29:35] Speaker 1: But it's not gonna be enough to truly eat up
[29:37] Speaker 1: and all that money they are paying him but this
[29:40] Speaker 1: is where stuff like Franklin messes it up now I
[29:43] Speaker 1: had a buddy of mine who made the point where
[29:45] Speaker 1: he saw that Franklin had got fired and he said
[29:48] Speaker 1: uh yep that's what you do when you're serious about
[29:51] Speaker 1: football take a guess where he went to college UNC Oh, no, no, no.
[30:01] Speaker 1: What school above all else can you think of that
[30:04] Speaker 1: would use the phrase serious about football? Alabama. He's like,
[30:10] Speaker 1: you're damn right. 34-8, not good enough.
[30:14] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[30:15] Speaker 1: That's not what we're about. It was the first time
[30:18] Speaker 1: I'd ever seen crazy Bama fan come out of him,
[30:20] Speaker 1: and he wasn't even being that crazy. But I fully
[30:23] Speaker 1: got what he was saying.
[30:24] Speaker 2: Just said it matter-of-factly.
[30:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like, this is what we're going to do.
[30:27] Speaker 1: Or the greatest and most important quote in the history
[30:30] Speaker 1: of college football, Jeremy Foley, after they decided they were
[30:33] Speaker 1: going to fire Ron Zook after he got crooned in 2004.
[30:37] Speaker 1: That which will be done eventually should be done immediately.
[30:45] Speaker 1: They are going to fire Bill Belichick. I don't know
[30:48] Speaker 1: where they're going to get this money from to get
[30:51] Speaker 1: him out of here. But they got to get him
[30:54] Speaker 1: out of here because it's not going to get any better.
[30:55] Speaker 1: They're not going to win any more games. We're again
[30:58] Speaker 1: getting more stuff about, you know, the Patriots and him,
[31:01] Speaker 1: you know, whether or not he had allowed them to
[31:03] Speaker 1: tweet about the Patriots, which means tweeting about Drake May,
[31:06] Speaker 1: which is probably the greatest PR that this program has.
[31:09] Speaker 1: All of this stuff. How can anybody be having fun
[31:13] Speaker 1: right now?
[31:13] Speaker 2: Also, all those players are going to leave.
[31:17] Speaker 1: Yes.
[31:17] Speaker 2: And who's going to want to go back there?
[31:19] Speaker 1: Well, well, well, here's the one thing. some of those
[31:21] Speaker 1: players are going to leave, right? But case in point,
[31:25] Speaker 1: their quarterback, I read, is making $ 2 million. I don't
[31:31] Speaker 1: think nobody giving that little homie $ 2 million to go
[31:34] Speaker 1: nowhere else. He trying to figure out how to stay forever.
[31:37] Speaker 2: How to get a contract extension.
[31:38] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
[31:38] Speaker 1: He would like to get a PharmD if he somehow
[31:41] Speaker 1: could and stick around. But it is... He's going to
[31:46] Speaker 1: try to get his money, but... What's got to stink
[31:49] Speaker 1: for him, and I think the thing that makes him
[31:50] Speaker 1: want to say more than anything else is, once it's
[31:52] Speaker 1: over here, it's over. Right. Ain't no jobs. There's no more.
[31:57] Speaker 1: What do you do when that's the only thing in
[32:00] Speaker 1: the world that does it for you? It's just not
[32:03] Speaker 1: an option. We about to find out just how in
[32:06] Speaker 1: love he is, or more accurately, how in love she is.
[32:10] Speaker 1: This shit they doing is a lot easier to do
[32:12] Speaker 1: when he at work for 60 hours a week. Yeah.
[32:16] Speaker 2: I mean, you're certainly not doing the media tour you
[32:19] Speaker 2: did last year, and you're certainly not getting another NFL job.
[32:23] Speaker 5: No.
[32:23] Speaker 2: How this is going to work, it'll be interesting.
[32:25] Speaker 1: Yo, I just forgot. You're right. He can't get no
[32:28] Speaker 1: job in the NFL, in all likelihood.
[32:30] Speaker 2: No, he can't. There's no way he's going back to
[32:32] Speaker 2: the NFL.
[32:33] Speaker 1: But I mean, not just as a coach. Can he
[32:37] Speaker 1: get a job broadcasting? Like, do you want to hire
[32:43] Speaker 1: Bill Belichick Okay, think about this for a second. Let's
[32:48] Speaker 1: imagine it's a bizarro world and there is an inside
[32:51] Speaker 1: the NFL that is like inside the NBA. Can you
[32:55] Speaker 1: imagine the hell that bizarro Charles Barkley gives Bill Belichick
[33:01] Speaker 1: for being in the news.
[33:02] Speaker 2: About this girl? Let's say Fox calls. Hey, you want
[33:05] Speaker 2: to come hang out for eight weeks? Even Terry Bradshaw, like,
[33:09] Speaker 2: that's a pretty G-rated show.
[33:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[33:11] Speaker 2: But, I mean, even Bradshaw will make those jokes.
[33:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's not taking them. He's not just rolling
[33:17] Speaker 1: with the punches. No. And what nobody wants is something unpredictable. Right.
[33:23] Speaker 1: And he's kind of sort of unpredictable, Ian, with a
[33:27] Speaker 1: clear grudge against a team in the league.
[33:30] Speaker 2: With a very powerful owner.
[33:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't. He's done. Yeah. He's going to hold
[33:36] Speaker 1: on to this job as tight as he can.
[33:38] Speaker 2: It's wild. All right. Shifting gears here. Target is soft
[33:43] Speaker 2: launching sales of a THC infused beverages at select stores
[33:46] Speaker 2: in Minnesota. They're going to target 10 select stores in
[33:50] Speaker 2: the state to put a dozen THC drink bands. Bo,
[33:53] Speaker 2: your thoughts.
[33:55] Speaker 1: Hey, man, I know pretend though when I see it.
[33:59] Speaker 1: That sounds something don't something don't something don't sound right
[34:04] Speaker 1: about this. Does Target even sell beer?
[34:07] Speaker 2: Target sells beer.
[34:08] Speaker 1: Okay.
[34:09] Speaker 2: Well, Target sells... Well, it's one of those things with...
[34:11] Speaker 2: Eversted has their own specific.
[34:13] Speaker 1: That's what I was about to say.
[34:15] Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
[34:16] Speaker 2: Louisiana just came out very fast. Of course Target sells beer.
[34:18] Speaker 1: That's exactly what I was saying right there. Every store
[34:21] Speaker 1: is a liquor store in Louisiana. Correct. For those of
[34:23] Speaker 1: you who don't know, every store is a liquor store.
[34:26] Speaker 1: But right when I said that, I was like, nobody
[34:27] Speaker 1: just asked a dude in Louisiana about this. But like.
[34:32] Speaker 5: If.
[34:33] Speaker 1: I just don't see any way possible that they let
[34:36] Speaker 1: you buy, buy, buy, we buy, buy, buy, drinkables at
[34:41] Speaker 1: the target. I just can't like, how much does it
[34:44] Speaker 1: have in it? I can't, but if they are right,
[34:48] Speaker 1: Target's about to become the spot. Cause then they go
[34:51] Speaker 1: have to get other ones.
[34:53] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, and also, um, I don't know how,
[34:56] Speaker 2: you know, stores in Minnesota work, but it's like, if
[34:59] Speaker 2: you're buying the drinkables, is it behind like a partition
[35:02] Speaker 2: where you have to push the button? Is it like
[35:04] Speaker 2: the cigarettes where you have to go up to your
[35:06] Speaker 2: own second counter? Like, is it just in the Gen
[35:09] Speaker 2: Pop store? Like that, the logistics of that are very interesting.
[35:13] Speaker 1: Well, I have to tell you, I did not realize
[35:16] Speaker 1: that Minnesota had gone legal.
[35:21] Speaker 2: Tim Walz. There he is.
[35:25] Speaker 1: There he is. Wow. No, this is, hey man, this is. Dude,
[35:30] Speaker 1: I ain't going to lie. I wasn't familiar with your game, guys.
[35:33] Speaker 1: I was certain that this was Pretendo. And no, it
[35:37] Speaker 1: looks like, oh, it says that it's a legal gray area.
[35:46] Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of stuff with how we
[35:49] Speaker 2: legalize has become a legal gray area. You remember those
[35:51] Speaker 2: two years where every store in New York was a— Oh,
[35:53] Speaker 2: my God.
[35:56] Speaker 1: That is a– when they do the documentary of COVID,
[36:01] Speaker 1: one part will be the day New York went legal.
[36:04] Speaker 2: Correct.
[36:05] Speaker 3: Right?
[36:05] Speaker 1: You just heard– it sounded like a Lil Wayne mixtape.
[36:09] Speaker 1: It just started everywhere, just lighter flick, right? All over
[36:13] Speaker 1: the place. And then where every store was a weed store.
[36:16] Speaker 3: Right.
[36:16] Speaker 1: Every– illegal, renegade. And then one day they weren't.
[36:19] Speaker 2: Then they were gone.
[36:21] Speaker 1: They were all gone.
[36:21] Speaker 2: There was a 15-month period where they were all here.
[36:24] Speaker 5: Yes.
[36:24] Speaker 2: And then they were all gone.
[36:25] Speaker 1: They were all gone. And by the way, they all
[36:27] Speaker 1: made the bodega step their games up. Every bodega got
[36:30] Speaker 1: a lot cleaner and got them purple lights. Thanks to
[36:33] Speaker 1: the weed stores.
[36:35] Speaker 2: All right. And finally, Turning Point USA has announced the
[36:39] Speaker 2: All-American Halftime Show. They're going to be counter-programming Bad Bunny's
[36:43] Speaker 2: performance during the Super Bowl halftime. However, a lot of
[36:47] Speaker 2: people fell for a fake promotional poster that included artists
[36:54] Speaker 2: Such as, let me pull this up so everyone can see.
[36:57] Speaker 2: Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Jason Aldean. and featuring a guest
[37:01] Speaker 2: appearance from measles.
[37:04] Speaker 1: And it was even more people on the list. I'm like,
[37:07] Speaker 1: how long do you think the Superbowl? I mean, halftime
[37:09] Speaker 1: is 45 minutes. Like that shit looked like a music
[37:11] Speaker 1: festival with measles, um, at the bottom. And I'll say,
[37:15] Speaker 1: I have absolutely no problem with them making the decision
[37:17] Speaker 1: to do this. I can't believe that they like drawn
[37:19] Speaker 1: this line in the sand. And though, I guess like
[37:21] Speaker 1: bad buddies got a lot of kind of anti-colonial politics
[37:24] Speaker 1: on one of his recent records. Um, I haven't, I,
[37:28] Speaker 1: My Spanish just ain't there. I'm going to try to
[37:30] Speaker 1: do it and see how it goes. His music ain't
[37:34] Speaker 1: my kind of music, generally speaking. But look, if people
[37:38] Speaker 1: don't want to watch Bad Bunny, then fine. And if
[37:39] Speaker 1: they want to have a country music halftime show, okay.
[37:44] Speaker 1: It really doesn't bother me at all. I think it's
[37:47] Speaker 1: dumb that they're this mad. I think it's dumb that
[37:51] Speaker 1: they're doing all this to try to enact some measure
[37:55] Speaker 1: of change. But No, that's what I want to go
[38:00] Speaker 1: do that. Like this isn't going to affect me in
[38:04] Speaker 1: the least. What the question is going to be about
[38:06] Speaker 1: this is. They have given Jay-Z and them a lot
[38:11] Speaker 1: of leeway with this halftime show. And if I'm going
[38:14] Speaker 1: to be honest. They probably haven't done enough. Just a
[38:20] Speaker 1: little bit of compromising. Like it's been year after year
[38:23] Speaker 1: after year after year after year of these acts that
[38:27] Speaker 1: a significant portion of the population has nothing for. Like
[38:31] Speaker 1: the G-Funk Super Bowl, that was one thing. Everybody loves
[38:34] Speaker 1: the G-Funk. Kendrick Lamar was the biggest thing that was
[38:37] Speaker 1: going on at the time, but it was a fair
[38:39] Speaker 1: question to ask. if that was a Super Bowl halftime.
[38:43] Speaker 2: You're saying they're going to have to do, they've been
[38:45] Speaker 2: doing a lot for them and they're going to have
[38:47] Speaker 2: to do one for us?
[38:48] Speaker 1: Jay-Z has been like, we got this now, right? Like,
[38:53] Speaker 1: we got this under control. And I think that this
[38:57] Speaker 1: bad bunny thing truly is as much a backlash to
[39:02] Speaker 1: that part. Now, the counterpoint obviously is, and this is true,
[39:05] Speaker 1: is that they could go years and years and years
[39:07] Speaker 1: of stuff that black people don't care about at all,
[39:09] Speaker 1: and we tolerate it and we truck through it, and
[39:11] Speaker 1: that is 100% true. That is what we do. I
[39:14] Speaker 1: am saying it has been a hard shift, and I
[39:18] Speaker 1: am not surprised that that has eventually met with a
[39:21] Speaker 1: measure of score. They're like, god damn, is one thing
[39:24] Speaker 1: to do this this hippity hoppity rapid this motherfucker don't
[39:27] Speaker 1: even speak english they're like well he does speak english
[39:30] Speaker 1: this ain't no interview it's the halftime.
[39:34] Speaker 2: Show who is going to be jay-z's olive branch.
[39:38] Speaker 1: I don't even know who the midpoint is anymore.
[39:41] Speaker 2: Is it miley cyrus is it.
[39:44] Speaker 1: Because they can you bring justin timberlake back yeah Can you?
[39:52] Speaker 1: Because I think it's about time to bring Janet Jackson back.
[39:59] Speaker 1: They did her wrong. She got all the hits and jams.
[40:05] Speaker 1: I think it's about time. Everybody loved Janet Jackson. And
[40:09] Speaker 1: if you're going to tell me that the reason you
[40:11] Speaker 1: don't love Janet Jackson is that her breast was partially exposed,
[40:15] Speaker 1: I don't even know why you was here in the
[40:16] Speaker 1: first place.
[40:23] Speaker 2: All right, Bo, voicemail lines open. Got a few good ones.
[40:26] Speaker 2: Here's our first.
[40:27] Speaker 5: Omani, this is Bryce in Brooklyn by way of Pittsburgh.
[40:32] Speaker 5: I just got to say this, man. You've got to
[40:33] Speaker 5: get off that narcotic when it comes to America's team.
[40:36] Speaker 5: I know you love your Lions. America's team. has been
[40:40] Speaker 5: shown time and time again to be the Pittsburgh Steelers,
[40:42] Speaker 5: not the Dallas Cowboys, definitely not the New England Patriots
[40:46] Speaker 5: or any of these other teams. We don't just travel well.
[40:49] Speaker 5: We are everywhere in every city and every state. There
[40:53] Speaker 5: is still a nation. Please understand why Pittsburgh is truly
[40:57] Speaker 5: America's team.
[40:58] Speaker 1: Thanks, man. No.
[41:03] Speaker 3: No.
[41:08] Speaker 1: That's why y'all ain't won no playoff game since it
[41:09] Speaker 1: was a black president. It's been that goddamn long. Look
[41:12] Speaker 1: at the world around you. See how crazy everything is?
[41:15] Speaker 1: It's been so long since y'all won a playoff game
[41:17] Speaker 1: that black man was the president. America's team is doing
[41:22] Speaker 1: it right now. Get hip. Get with the times.
[41:27] Speaker 2: All right, Bo, here's our next one.
[41:29] Speaker 1: Hey, Bomani.
[41:30] Speaker 3: This is Hair from Kansas City, Missouri. I was just
[41:34] Speaker 3: calling because Robert Glasper has a new album out. And
[41:38] Speaker 3: there's a fantastic cover of Outcast's prototype. And it features
[41:46] Speaker 3: Nora Jones. And I was just curious, do you have
[41:50] Speaker 3: any favorite covers that come to mind?
[41:56] Speaker 1: Man, that there is the super long list, right? Because, like,
[42:01] Speaker 1: damn near everything is a cover at some point. Like,
[42:05] Speaker 1: It's hard for me to think of just one that
[42:09] Speaker 1: immediately jumps out. There's some that just become kind of
[42:14] Speaker 1: classically beloved, like the Wilson Pickett cover of Hey Jude.
[42:18] Speaker 1: That's always one that goes super hard because it just
[42:20] Speaker 1: in some ways seems like it doesn't or shouldn't make sense. Wow.
[42:25] Speaker 1: This is what happens. My brain overloads on this because
[42:29] Speaker 1: all I got to do is just really throw you one.
[42:31] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? That's all you're really looking
[42:33] Speaker 1: for is what I am sifting through everything. Yeah.
[42:37] Speaker 2: It's like, it's like how much time you got, you know?
[42:39] Speaker 1: Yes.
[42:39] Speaker 2: Like, yes.
[42:40] Speaker 1: Yes. Like we could do this all day long, but yes,
[42:44] Speaker 1: if you've never listened to the Wilson picket, Hey Jude
[42:46] Speaker 1: cover with Dwayne Almond on guitar, go ahead and start there.
[42:48] Speaker 1: And I'll think more about this later.
[42:49] Speaker 2: All right, Bo, here's our last one.
[42:52] Speaker 3: What's up, Bo?
[42:53] Speaker 4: So I got a question for you. If you have
[42:55] Speaker 4: a time where, if it was a teacher thing, or
[42:59] Speaker 4: someone you knew where they had just had it with someone.
[43:03] Speaker 4: I'm thinking like someone in authority, because I got one.
[43:06] Speaker 4: I went to an all boys Catholic high school and
[43:10] Speaker 4: we had a class that was taught by a priest
[43:14] Speaker 4: named Father George. And one time, I'm going to change,
[43:18] Speaker 4: that's his name. I'll change everyone else's name involved. There
[43:21] Speaker 4: was this guy, call him Mike, Mike Jones, right?
[43:26] Speaker 2: Who?
[43:27] Speaker 4: And he was just misbehaving all class. And Father George says,
[43:33] Speaker 4: all right, boys, if no one is supposed to say
[43:38] Speaker 4: a word unless they raise their hand, okay? I've had it.
[43:42] Speaker 4: Do you understand me? And Mike goes, raises his hand.
[43:47] Speaker 4: He goes, what do you want, Michael? I understand, Father.
[43:50] Speaker 4: And he's just like, stay after class. And so he
[43:56] Speaker 4: has to stay after class. We're all, like, crying around
[43:58] Speaker 4: the door looking at him, like, ooh, you know, you're
[44:00] Speaker 4: in trouble. And we hear Father George, a man of
[44:03] Speaker 4: the cloth, say, Michael, you are a jerk, an asshole,
[44:10] Speaker 4: and I hate you. Now get out of my room.
[44:15] Speaker 4: Walked out with his head down. And I just couldn't
[44:18] Speaker 4: believe it. A priest telling a young man that he
[44:21] Speaker 4: hates him. He just had it. And honestly, he deserved it.
[44:27] Speaker 4: He was, he was acting up and did a lot.
[44:30] Speaker 4: So yeah. Let me know if you got one, something
[44:33] Speaker 4: like that. All right, man.
[44:34] Speaker 3: Talk to you.
[44:36] Speaker 1: So I remember that. So I used to ride school
[44:40] Speaker 1: bus when I was in school and it was interesting
[44:42] Speaker 1: because I did not actually live in the school district,
[44:44] Speaker 1: but I would ride the school bus to my mom's office.
[44:47] Speaker 1: So I would school in this little town called Waller
[44:49] Speaker 1: and I would ride the bus to Prairie View where
[44:50] Speaker 1: my mom's office was.
[44:52] Speaker 3: Right.
[44:52] Speaker 1: And so, Prairie View or this Waller County, which you
[44:56] Speaker 1: may know as this is, just to give you a
[44:58] Speaker 1: little context about some of the situations, that is where
[45:00] Speaker 1: the Sandra Bland incident took place, right? And I'm just
[45:03] Speaker 1: saying this to say that I think there was a
[45:07] Speaker 1: touchmosism that I fully appreciated or realized at the time. Anyway,
[45:12] Speaker 1: so my bus dropped all the kids off in Prairie View.
[45:16] Speaker 1: And so it was a kind of wall-to-wall black bus.
[45:18] Speaker 1: And in this period of time, the only white people
[45:21] Speaker 1: on the bus were these two white kids who rode
[45:24] Speaker 1: the bus because their white mother, Ms. Susan, was driving
[45:27] Speaker 1: the bus.
[45:28] Speaker 4: Okay.
[45:29] Speaker 1: And I'm going to be honest with you. We was
[45:31] Speaker 1: a handful. And I want to be very careful in
[45:34] Speaker 1: not implying that Ms. Susan had animosity toward us because
[45:39] Speaker 1: we was black on that bus, because I would have
[45:41] Speaker 1: had animosity toward our black asses too. And I don't
[45:44] Speaker 1: recall her ever expressing anything in terms of race. But
[45:48] Speaker 1: I do remember one day Miss Susan wasn't driving the
[45:51] Speaker 1: bus no more. She just wasn't driving the bus no more.
[45:56] Speaker 1: And Miss Susan, apparently, I had not been on the
[46:00] Speaker 1: bus the day before, and they said that Miss Susan
[46:03] Speaker 1: had a meltdown on that bus and said loud enough
[46:07] Speaker 1: to be heard that, quote, I would rather cut grass
[46:12] Speaker 1: and pick cotton than drive this damn bus another day. Now,
[46:19] Speaker 1: I am going to assume that she really needed this drive,
[46:23] Speaker 1: driving this bus. Cause otherwise, why would she be driving
[46:26] Speaker 1: this bus? But however, she badly, she needed that money
[46:30] Speaker 1: to drive the bus. She did.
[46:34] Speaker 2: Being on a, as someone who is a parent now,
[46:37] Speaker 2: someone who being on a bus with like 46 year
[46:42] Speaker 2: old kids.
[46:43] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[46:44] Speaker 2: Or like six to ten year old kids. That sounds awful.
[46:48] Speaker 1: I have a friend, and I will not identify who
[46:50] Speaker 1: that friend is, but he tells a story about this
[46:53] Speaker 1: apartment he had in college. And they was in there
[46:56] Speaker 1: just acting bad, toe the place up on top of
[46:59] Speaker 1: the fact that they was moving various forms of dope
[47:07] Speaker 1: and a few firearms out of this apartment. It was
[47:10] Speaker 1: just way too much going on. They laid on the rent,
[47:13] Speaker 1: all that stuff. One day, the landlord came in, looked around,
[47:20] Speaker 1: and just said, you.
[47:22] Speaker 2: Got to go.
[47:25] Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. I don't care about the money.
[47:28] Speaker 1: Just get your shit and go. You just got to go.
[47:35] Speaker 1: Nothing quite like when somebody is driven to their absolute end.
[47:39] Speaker 1: This must cease. This must stop. Speaking of which, ladies
