Bomani Jones is back from NBA Summer League in Las Vegas with a loaded episode of The Right Time, starting with the wildest story of the weekend: the Bam Adebayo-Tyler Herro fight. From there, Bo gets into Victor Wembanyama’s five-year, $252 million extension with the San Antonio Spurs and explains why taking less than the full max could be great for the team but dangerous as a precedent for NBA stars. He also talks Summer League standouts, the AJ Dybantsa vs. Darryn Peterson matchup, the ongoing Kawhi Leonard and LA Clippers investigation & whether anyone actually cares how that case ends. He also reacts to Conor McGregor’s latest injury in Las Vegas, and Jalen Brown’s recent comments. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:01] Speaker 1: Wave.
[0:09] Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:14] Speaker 3: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:16] Speaker 3: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:20] Speaker 3: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:22] Speaker 3: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:25] Speaker 3: a hater. I was in Las Vegas this weekend, you know.
[0:30] Speaker 3: checking out Summer League situation, and I didn't realize that
[0:35] Speaker 3: it was a fight weekend. And apparently, Tyler Hero did
[0:41] Speaker 3: not realize it was a fight weekend.
[0:43] Speaker 2: Or maybe Tyler Hero did know that it.
[0:45] Speaker 3: Was a fight weekend, but he misunderstood who the white
[0:48] Speaker 3: boy was that was going to be getting his ass whooped.
[0:50] Speaker 2: He thought that that might have been Conor McGregor. Incorrect.
[0:54] Speaker 2: It was you, son. It was you. Those of you
[0:59] Speaker 2: who don't know what happened. I gotta say.
[1:03] Speaker 3: This in a bit of a more broad sense, right?
[1:06] Speaker 3: This is the first weekend of NBA Summer League. And
[1:10] Speaker 3: I think, and I've never really talked to anybody about this.
[1:13] Speaker 3: I'm just making a certain level of assumption. But it's
[1:16] Speaker 3: kind of become just like a basketball epicenter sort of
[1:20] Speaker 3: situation because you've got NBA Summer League and then also
[1:25] Speaker 3: this big AAU tournament that goes on that same weekend.
[1:28] Speaker 3: And I've assumed, and I could be wrong, and a
[1:30] Speaker 3: big part of why they do that is All the.
[1:33] Speaker 2: NBA guys got AAU teams anyway. So then they're going
[1:37] Speaker 2: to be there, right?
[1:38] Speaker 3: So then you get like all the college coaches who
[1:40] Speaker 3: are going to be there because there's the AAU tournament
[1:43] Speaker 3: that is going on there.
[1:44] Speaker 2: And you got the NBA and they even had an
[1:46] Speaker 2: Aces game over the weekend. You understand what I'm saying?
[1:48] Speaker 2: So it's a lot going on there.
[1:51] Speaker 3: But I hadn't really given a lot of thought to
[1:53] Speaker 3: the AAU tournament, except for the fact that It's a
[2:00] Speaker 3: lot of teenagers walking around the casino. Now, they're not
[2:03] Speaker 3: stopping and sitting and playing no games or nothing, right?
[2:07] Speaker 2: I'm just saying all that to say, and.
[2:09] Speaker 3: I could be wrong, but I just don't feel like
[2:12] Speaker 3: Las Vegas is the place for high school activities. I
[2:15] Speaker 3: wouldn't care if it's the Nevada State Championship. I guess
[2:17] Speaker 3: Nevada shit is all the same. But you get where
[2:19] Speaker 3: I'm coming from, right? Like, I just don't think that's
[2:21] Speaker 3: the wisest idea.
[2:22] Speaker 4: Where else are they going to go? Reno?
[2:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Nevada's all Nevada, right?
[2:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
[2:29] Speaker 3: But even still, let's bring the teenagers to Vegas, man.
[2:32] Speaker 2: You're going to.
[2:33] Speaker 3: You go, I see a lot, a whole lot going
[2:35] Speaker 3: on there. Don't know if I would necessarily recommend it.
[2:38] Speaker 3: That's all I'm saying. But anyway, so apparently at Resort World,
[2:42] Speaker 3: they got like basketball courts, Ryan. And that's where there
[2:44] Speaker 3: was some form of practice.
[2:46] Speaker 2: It's out of Hero and out of Bayou over there.
[2:48] Speaker 3: And I know some people have asked the question about like,
[2:51] Speaker 3: how is it that this made the news? People get
[2:52] Speaker 3: in fights all the time because this happened in front.
[2:54] Speaker 2: Of a gang of people.
[2:56] Speaker 4: Yes.
[2:57] Speaker 5: Right.
[2:57] Speaker 2: This wasn't like a practice fight.
[2:59] Speaker 3: Tyler Hero sees Bam Adebayo, says something, and the greatest
[3:05] Speaker 3: detail from the report from the Athletic is.
[3:08] Speaker 2: The two words, without hesitation.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Yes.
[3:11] Speaker 3: Where they said that Bam Adebayo, without hesitation, stole off
[3:15] Speaker 3: on Tyler Hero in the head area, I think was
[3:18] Speaker 3: the way that it was put.
[3:19] Speaker 2: You got to be careful about the specifics on that.
[3:22] Speaker 3: And for those of you who don't know, Tyler Hero
[3:25] Speaker 3: had got caught DMing with somebody on Instagram, complaining about
[3:28] Speaker 3: Bam and basically saying, I don't really understand. Like, I'm
[3:31] Speaker 3: the dude that they were trying to stop on offense.
[3:34] Speaker 3: He ain't even got to show up and y'all just
[3:36] Speaker 3: love him, which... Interestingly enough, it's not an unfair point.
[3:40] Speaker 4: Bit of a diet get-off-my-Dickerson situation.
[3:43] Speaker 1: It is.
[3:43] Speaker 2: It is, except it was on his name.
[3:45] Speaker 4: Yes.
[3:46] Speaker 2: It was on his name.
[3:46] Speaker 3: But no, I forget which writer it was that reported
[3:49] Speaker 3: that that was the thing that Jimmy Butler had also felt, because.
[3:51] Speaker 2: That's the thing.
[3:52] Speaker 3: When they don't want to give Jimmy to Max, there's
[3:53] Speaker 3: always somebody that Jimmy's looking at like, you don't give
[3:55] Speaker 3: it to him?
[3:55] Speaker 6: Right.
[3:57] Speaker 3: Normally, Jimmy's right about this, but it is a pattern.
[4:00] Speaker 2: We cannot deny it. But Tyler Hero seemed to have
[4:02] Speaker 2: that same feeling.
[4:03] Speaker 3: I forget who it was, which one of the reporters
[4:05] Speaker 3: from Miami was like, yeah, man, guys on the team
[4:07] Speaker 3: wonder why it is all of us are in the
[4:09] Speaker 3: trade talks.
[4:09] Speaker 2: It ain't never him. So there's a certain level of
[4:12] Speaker 2: resentment that does exist.
[4:16] Speaker 3: However, I give Bam some credit because people often talk
[4:22] Speaker 3: about on-site, right? Like it's going to be an on-site situation.
[4:29] Speaker 2: I'm swinging on you.
[4:31] Speaker 3: On site very few people actually mean that even if
[4:36] Speaker 3: it is on site they got a temperate on the
[4:39] Speaker 3: front end with a little jibber jabber which means it's
[4:41] Speaker 3: not actually an on site it's on site i will
[4:44] Speaker 3: go over there and eventually perhaps i will swing no
[4:47] Speaker 3: based on the reports this was on site.
[4:52] Speaker 4: Bit of a heat seeking missile situation just straight.
[4:54] Speaker 2: On site Right there, right there. He'd been telling people,
[4:58] Speaker 2: if I see him, this is what I'm going to do.
[5:01] Speaker 2: And then he did it.
[5:02] Speaker 3: It was so on site in that way, Ryan, that
[5:06] Speaker 3: I asked people if Asia Wilson was there. Because don't
[5:11] Speaker 3: nobody make nobody get that battery in their back to
[5:14] Speaker 3: fight quite like that girl being there. Like if he
[5:16] Speaker 3: had been at the crib telling his girl, he'd go
[5:18] Speaker 3: whoop his ass the next time he saw him.
[5:20] Speaker 2: And his girl was there and he saw him. He
[5:23] Speaker 2: really got to do it. Like, in front of your partners,
[5:25] Speaker 2: we might have understood that you was just being a little,
[5:28] Speaker 2: you was a little aggy.
[5:29] Speaker 4: Right.
[5:29] Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no.
[5:30] Speaker 4: He gets like that sometimes, yeah.
[5:31] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[5:32] Speaker 3: Apparently, Bam, Bam could not be a Houston Rock. You
[5:39] Speaker 3: raise a good point there about to get off by Diggerson.
[5:42] Speaker 3: Bam would have run, apparently, Bam would have or might
[5:46] Speaker 3: have at least run up on Kevin Durant instantly.
[5:50] Speaker 2: Nah, he brought it to Tyler Hero.
[5:53] Speaker 3: And I want to know what voice Tyler Hero was
[5:55] Speaker 3: using in all of this. Because what they tell me
[5:57] Speaker 3: about Tyler Hero was it wasn't like that before.
[6:01] Speaker 2: He got to Kentucky. Then I'll never forget when he
[6:05] Speaker 2: got drafted.
[6:06] Speaker 3: I hadn't really paid that much attention to what his
[6:08] Speaker 3: get down was, but I saw him at the draft
[6:10] Speaker 3: and his whole thing and how he was acting.
[6:12] Speaker 2: And you can look it up on Twitter.
[6:14] Speaker 3: I said that the appropriate draft comp for him was
[6:17] Speaker 3: Scott Storch. He had all the way leaned in onto
[6:21] Speaker 3: this version of Tyler Hero that we now see. This
[6:25] Speaker 3: whole B-Rad situation. He was all the way there at
[6:30] Speaker 3: that point. And I want to know, when he get
[6:32] Speaker 3: hit in the face, does he get more B-Rad or
[6:34] Speaker 3: does he go back to being Brad? Does he take
[6:40] Speaker 3: it back to whatever it is? I personally am very
[6:43] Speaker 3: curious about that fact. That became the single biggest story
[6:47] Speaker 3: of the weekend, boys. Everybody has something to say and
[6:50] Speaker 3: ask about that.
[6:51] Speaker 4: Right. Nothing brings people together like a, not only a fight,
[6:55] Speaker 4: but a surprise, a fight they were not expecting.
[6:58] Speaker 2: A fight they weren't expecting.
[7:00] Speaker 3: And as we know, nothing makes a fight sell like
[7:03] Speaker 3: a little bit of chromatic contrast.
[7:07] Speaker 2: The thing is, this is where it gets weird. The
[7:11] Speaker 2: white dudes that are under the Tyler Hero archetype, they
[7:16] Speaker 2: don't get the support of their own people. unless they
[7:20] Speaker 2: come back home, right?
[7:24] Speaker 3: And I wonder, and remember.
[7:27] Speaker 2: Tyler's back in Wisconsin now. Think about this.
[7:29] Speaker 3: Dave was mad at Tyler Hero coming out of high
[7:31] Speaker 3: school because he didn't go to Wisconsin. Not only did
[7:34] Speaker 3: he not go to Wisconsin, he went off and got
[7:36] Speaker 3: less Wisconsin than he ever could have been.
[7:39] Speaker 2: And now he coming back to play for the Bucs.
[7:41] Speaker 2: And I don't know, man.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Maybe he can hang out with Cuckoo Cal and some
[7:45] Speaker 3: of the other Milwaukee hip hoppers.
[7:47] Speaker 2: I have no idea who it is that he's going
[7:49] Speaker 2: to hang out with. But I do feel like, and
[7:51] Speaker 2: I could be wrong, somebody will have to go ask
[7:54] Speaker 2: the whites. But if Tyler Herro.
[7:57] Speaker 3: wants to get the sympathy that you normally get because
[7:59] Speaker 3: some mean black guy, when it's stolen off on you
[8:02] Speaker 3: out of nowhere, he's going to have to repent. You know?
[8:07] Speaker 2: He's going to have to acknowledge some of his sins.
[8:09] Speaker 4: Not apologize, repent.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's got to come back.
[8:15] Speaker 2: He's got to pay this off.
[8:17] Speaker 3: He's got some debt to pay off as he returns.
[8:22] Speaker 4: You know he's repenting if he shows up in a
[8:23] Speaker 4: Packers jersey?
[8:25] Speaker 3: I think that's a part of it, because he might
[8:27] Speaker 3: have turned into a Raiders fan, right? This is how
[8:31] Speaker 3: you know that he's made the decision to come back.
[8:35] Speaker 3: You'll know he's made this decision to come back when
[8:38] Speaker 3: he takes the path that many others in his situation
[8:44] Speaker 3: have taken. I remember the first time I really noticed it,
[8:50] Speaker 3: I want to say it was in the year 1999,
[8:54] Speaker 3: around 2000. I saw it again, maybe about five years ago,
[9:04] Speaker 3: give or take. And most recently, I think I saw
[9:10] Speaker 3: it one or two years ago. And when I saw
[9:15] Speaker 3: it happen one or two years ago, it was Post Malone.
[9:20] Speaker 3: And when I saw it about five years ago, It
[9:24] Speaker 3: was Justin Timberlake. And when I saw it in 1999,
[9:30] Speaker 3: it was Everlast.
[9:31] Speaker 2: Excuse me, Whitey Ford. That's right. That's right.
[9:38] Speaker 3: You know what time it is for Tyler Hero. If
[9:40] Speaker 3: you want to get him back, you want to get
[9:42] Speaker 3: the crowd back on your side, time for you to
[9:46] Speaker 3: go to the pawn shop.
[9:49] Speaker 2: And go get you an acoustic guitar.
[9:55] Speaker 4: That's right.
[9:56] Speaker 2: You go ahead and do that. You go there. You
[9:59] Speaker 2: get that acoustic guitar.
[10:00] Speaker 1: Guitar.
[10:01] Speaker 2: You learn you three chords. All you need is three, baby.
[10:05] Speaker 2: You go get you three chords. You go learn some
[10:09] Speaker 2: old standards of sorts. You know what I mean?
[10:11] Speaker 3: In fact, you should have started practicing in Las Vegas
[10:16] Speaker 3: getting the crew back. You had a test audience for
[10:19] Speaker 3: you to work this out with while you was there.
[10:21] Speaker 3: It's all them people that came to see Kenny Chesney.
[10:25] Speaker 4: Interesting crowd, I'm sure. A little different from the summer
[10:27] Speaker 4: league crowd.
[10:28] Speaker 2: Well, keep in mind, there's a Conor McGregor crowd also.
[10:31] Speaker 4: Oh, I forgot about, I forgot about that.
[10:33] Speaker 2: However, the Kenny Chesney crowd was easy to specify.
[10:37] Speaker 4: I'm sure they were.
[10:38] Speaker 2: Out of the other ones, but.
[10:39] Speaker 3: I think maybe Tyler Herro needed to go there. Or
[10:42] Speaker 3: maybe he needed to, because it'd be too much for
[10:44] Speaker 3: him to go all the way there. Maybe he stops
[10:46] Speaker 3: at the Conor McGregor crowd on the way back. Like,
[10:48] Speaker 3: this is how you.
[10:51] Speaker 2: Kind of work it out.
[10:52] Speaker 3: Or, or, or, or, he got to double down on
[10:57] Speaker 3: what it was. Here's why that worries me. I feel
[11:03] Speaker 3: like I've seen very similar movies before with people like
[11:07] Speaker 3: this in these circumstances. where they get stole on and
[11:10] Speaker 3: they need to make sure that everybody know they ain't
[11:12] Speaker 3: no punk. Please don't start carrying a gun.
[11:24] Speaker 2: And who knows, maybe he carries one already. I have
[11:26] Speaker 2: no idea.
[11:27] Speaker 3: But I'm just saying, please don't. Yeah, yeah, I'm just
[11:30] Speaker 3: sitting here right here. Like, please, please don't. Like, again,
[11:34] Speaker 3: I know you're going back to Wisconsin. If you want
[11:35] Speaker 3: to get a gun so you can shoot some animals...
[11:37] Speaker 3: It's a little bit of a different situation, you know? But,
[11:40] Speaker 3: you know, very often, again, in these times, people feel
[11:44] Speaker 3: they got to do what it take to get back
[11:46] Speaker 3: their respect. And maybe sometime they go a little bit farther.
[11:50] Speaker 3: And I'm going to be honest, if I was him,
[11:52] Speaker 3: I'd be a little bit worried that all these cats...
[11:55] Speaker 3: The rest of them go start stealing off on me
[11:56] Speaker 3: for no reason. Also, just because I didn't really hear
[11:59] Speaker 3: nothing in the story about him hitting nobody back.
[12:01] Speaker 4: No, no, no. It was not. They got an altercation.
[12:05] Speaker 4: It was great. Bam out of body. Yeah. Hit him
[12:10] Speaker 4: in the face here. Facial area.
[12:12] Speaker 2: That is a great point.
[12:13] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[12:13] Speaker 2: So you see why I'm worried, right?
[12:14] Speaker 4: Right.
[12:15] Speaker 3: Like, like.
[12:16] Speaker 2: Ain't nothing worse than.
[12:17] Speaker 3: Somebody in that situation that then feel like they got.
[12:19] Speaker 2: Something to prove. And hey, who knows?
[12:21] Speaker 3: Maybe Tyler Herro gonna hear this and he gonna feel
[12:24] Speaker 3: like he can prove it, run.
[12:25] Speaker 2: It up on me. I'll take that for the squad.
[12:28] Speaker 2: Ain't nobody gonna die. You know what I'm saying? It
[12:31] Speaker 2: ain't gonna happen, right? Like I'd appreciate it if you
[12:33] Speaker 2: didn't like pull no, you ain't gotta pull no tool
[12:35] Speaker 2: on me. You ain't got a pistol with me. All
[12:36] Speaker 2: you gotta do is come and talk real mean in
[12:38] Speaker 2: my face, right?
[12:39] Speaker 3: You tall enough than me, I'll give you the satisfaction.
[12:42] Speaker 3: I'll let you get your money's worth, right? I'll take
[12:45] Speaker 3: that all for everybody if that's the route that you
[12:47] Speaker 3: wanna take just to keep everything safe. But in the
[12:51] Speaker 3: long run, brother, I'm telling you, let's think about some
[12:55] Speaker 3: of these songs that you might wanna learn the words to.
[12:58] Speaker 3: Fire and Rain, Country Roads. You know, I'm just saying,
[13:05] Speaker 3: these are the kind of songs that, you know, Sweet Caroline.
[13:08] Speaker 2: Just saying. Like, when you go back, man, you might
[13:10] Speaker 2: want to play them, play them some jams that they do, right?
[13:16] Speaker 2: But you got to think about how you move past this.
[13:18] Speaker 4: Friends in Wild Places.
[13:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's... Call it Bat Rouge. Isn't that what y'all
[13:22] Speaker 2: like over there?
[13:23] Speaker 4: We sure do.
[13:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, like this is how you make your path back. Or, or, or,
[13:30] Speaker 3: somebody start playing Eye of the Tiger or whatever the
[13:33] Speaker 3: name of the song is, the Biggie sample for victory,
[13:37] Speaker 3: and prepare yourself for.
[13:38] Speaker 2: That first game against the Heat. Because you got to
[13:41] Speaker 2: come out there and spill off on that motherfucker as
[13:42] Speaker 2: soon as you see him out there. I don't know.
[13:45] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[13:46] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[13:47] Speaker 2: But the plan that's going to make you the most money...
[13:50] Speaker 2: Three chords. Three chords and a dream.
[13:59] Speaker 3: All right, the other basketball story that actually isn't from
[14:02] Speaker 3: Summer League is kind of wild that Victor Wimbayama signed
[14:05] Speaker 3: his extension. Five years, $ 252 million. It's a lot of money,
[14:12] Speaker 3: but it's $ 50 million less than he could have signed for. Now,
[14:20] Speaker 3: It's safe to assume that this is about the NBA
[14:23] Speaker 3: in their apron situation and creating a situation where these
[14:27] Speaker 3: other cats can get their money or can get some
[14:31] Speaker 3: money and they can hold the team together.
[14:35] Speaker 2: He can do whatever he wants with his money, right?
[14:39] Speaker 3: And maybe this makes him the nicest guy in the
[14:42] Speaker 3: world because I feel like what he did was, and
[14:48] Speaker 3: someone could correct me if I'm wrong here, I feel
[14:52] Speaker 3: like he made the sacrifice so that nobody else would
[14:58] Speaker 3: have to sacrifice.
[15:00] Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
[15:01] Speaker 3: So since Victor do that to get his money, nobody
[15:05] Speaker 3: else has to do that in order to save their money.
[15:12] Speaker 3: I would not recommend setting that precedent, right? Now, to
[15:15] Speaker 3: be fair to him, and Ryan, I think this is
[15:17] Speaker 3: a big part of it. It's a little different when
[15:21] Speaker 3: you do this, and it's about hypothetical personnel moves that
[15:26] Speaker 3: you'll be making. We know the guys that they need
[15:29] Speaker 3: to give the money to.
[15:30] Speaker 4: Yes.
[15:30] Speaker 2: We saw them out there, right? It's Dillon Harper. It's Castle.
[15:36] Speaker 4: Who are all going to be coming up with a
[15:38] Speaker 4: very similar extension in the next year or two.
[15:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, or somewhere in there, right?
[15:42] Speaker 3: So I don't think he winds up in the situation
[15:45] Speaker 3: like Dirk Nowitzki. Where Dirk was just out here putting
[15:48] Speaker 3: all these kids through private school just so they could go, like,
[15:51] Speaker 3: win 40 games.
[15:53] Speaker 5: Right?
[15:53] Speaker 3: Like, they ain't never made no good decisions with Dirk's
[15:56] Speaker 3: money that he kept.
[15:57] Speaker 2: Giving back to them year after year.
[15:59] Speaker 4: Well, it turns out that Mark Cuban might not have
[16:01] Speaker 4: been the best basketball mind.
[16:03] Speaker 1: Fair.
[16:03] Speaker 4: If we've learned anything from the way he's given interviews.
[16:06] Speaker 3: Over the last year and a half. But the bottom
[16:07] Speaker 3: line is, if he's going to get his money back,
[16:09] Speaker 3: I need to know where it's going.
[16:10] Speaker 1: Right. Right?
[16:11] Speaker 3: Like, there's some friends that they call you and be like, yo, man,
[16:13] Speaker 3: I need to borrow some money. You don't ask no questions.
[16:15] Speaker 2: You give it to them. Some others would be like, yeah,
[16:16] Speaker 2: what's this going to? What's this for?
[16:19] Speaker 4: What happened?
[16:21] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[16:21] Speaker 3: And so it's interesting because I think the new head
[16:23] Speaker 3: of the Players Association.
[16:27] Speaker 2: This week did a press conference.
[16:29] Speaker 3: His big thing was about how we got to do
[16:31] Speaker 3: something about the second apron. Which does not seem to
[16:34] Speaker 3: be good for the players, right?
[16:36] Speaker 4: No.
[16:37] Speaker 2: Not for the players that want to stay places.
[16:39] Speaker 3: I think if you just look at it through a
[16:41] Speaker 3: very binary lens of more money, get it wherever you want,
[16:45] Speaker 3: but I think that guys, especially if you've got a
[16:47] Speaker 3: good little situation with a.
[16:48] Speaker 2: Team, they kind of want to keep that thing together.
[16:50] Speaker 3: I was talking to somebody from the league who says
[16:51] Speaker 3: it feels like what's happened with these things has been
[16:54] Speaker 3: an unmitigated success, and the comparison that he made was
[16:56] Speaker 3: that Nobody cares about guys changing teams to the NFL
[16:59] Speaker 3: every year. And that's a yes and no sort of situation.
[17:02] Speaker 3: You're correct, but that's just a different game. I prefer
[17:06] Speaker 3: the dynasty soccer with the NBA. And I do think
[17:09] Speaker 3: that fans don't like the idea that they have to
[17:12] Speaker 3: lose their players just because they got too good.
[17:15] Speaker 2: In the NFL, you don't get nearly as much of
[17:17] Speaker 2: that feeling.
[17:18] Speaker 3: Like in the NFL, when a guy leaves the team,
[17:20] Speaker 3: normally it's because the team wants the guy to leave.
[17:22] Speaker 4: And also, in the NFL, like, lots of players leave,
[17:24] Speaker 4: but the top five or six players in a dynasty
[17:27] Speaker 4: don't normally leave.
[17:28] Speaker 2: That is correct.
[17:29] Speaker 4: Right, like, you know, like, the back end of the
[17:32] Speaker 4: roster changes, but the face of the franchise is, if
[17:34] Speaker 4: you were on a sustained run, those guys are often there.
[17:37] Speaker 3: Yeah, we're looking at things happening with the number two
[17:39] Speaker 3: and the number three guys on the team.
[17:41] Speaker 4: Right.
[17:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, and that doesn't quite feel as good. And so.
[17:48] Speaker 3: The Jalen Brunson thing, I think, has led to the
[17:50] Speaker 3: idea of the charm of, hey, I'll give back a
[17:52] Speaker 3: little bit of money so that we can make these
[17:55] Speaker 3: big moves. But remember, Jalen Brunson was negotiating in a
[17:58] Speaker 3: situation with a team.
[17:59] Speaker 2: That gave his daddy a job.
[18:02] Speaker 3: The general manager, who was his daddy's agent, and his agent,
[18:06] Speaker 3: who is the general manager's son. That's very my seeds,
[18:11] Speaker 3: marry his seeds, marry his seeds. That's how we keep
[18:13] Speaker 3: Wu-Tang money all up in the family.
[18:16] Speaker 2: That's what they were doing.
[18:17] Speaker 3: By the way, that is exactly how Leon Rose described
[18:20] Speaker 3: it when they got together to talk about that. That's
[18:22] Speaker 3: how we keep Wu-Tang money all up in the family.
[18:24] Speaker 3: That's what he said.
[18:26] Speaker 2: I promise you. Look it up. It's law.
[18:31] Speaker 3: But anyway, I will never like, I do not like
[18:33] Speaker 3: ever that it's this guy's job or they feel the
[18:37] Speaker 3: obligation to do the job of the general manager. That
[18:40] Speaker 3: they feel the obligation to figure out how to get
[18:43] Speaker 3: this done. But to be fair, I don't know necessarily
[18:47] Speaker 3: how the general managers, unless you're Sam Presti and you
[18:49] Speaker 3: just got a zillion draft picks that allow you to
[18:52] Speaker 3: figure it out.
[18:53] Speaker 2: I don't know what else there.
[18:55] Speaker 3: Is, but If somehow... So, okay. So this is actually
[18:58] Speaker 3: an interesting progression with the agent.
[19:00] Speaker 2: With the union, that is. That the union has typically
[19:03] Speaker 2: been a middle-class players union, right? It's always been a.
[19:09] Speaker 3: Like mid-tier level guy who's in charge. And the CBAs
[19:13] Speaker 3: have always been.
[19:14] Speaker 4: CJ McCollum. No, no, no, no.
[19:16] Speaker 2: Not even him. That's a little too high up. That's
[19:18] Speaker 2: a little too high up. Derek Fisher's a better example.
[19:21] Speaker 4: Okay, got it. That makes sense.
[19:21] Speaker 3: But yeah, but it's just a run of guys. Like
[19:24] Speaker 3: the CBAs have been good to the middle class of
[19:26] Speaker 3: the NBA. And then we saw, I think it was
[19:29] Speaker 3: the 2011 lockout. That's when we saw the stars come back.
[19:32] Speaker 3: That's Chris Paul being in charge. And the stars started
[19:36] Speaker 3: to get some things to take care of them better.
[19:38] Speaker 3: on the top end of this because that's the thing
[19:40] Speaker 3: about sports union stuff is and there could be a
[19:43] Speaker 3: wide range of what everybody's looking for in coming out
[19:48] Speaker 3: of this right so then yeah cj mccollum is a
[19:50] Speaker 3: little bit more toward that obviously than the chris paul
[19:53] Speaker 3: example but this has been a very good union to
[19:58] Speaker 3: pretty good players because that's the max contract is great
[20:01] Speaker 3: for pretty good players because since you can't give all
[20:04] Speaker 3: the money to the excellent players the pretty good players
[20:08] Speaker 3: Get to get a chunk.
[20:09] Speaker 4: Right. The like 15th to 30th best player in the
[20:12] Speaker 4: NBA have it.
[20:13] Speaker 1: Yes.
[20:13] Speaker 4: Probably have the best deal in the NBA.
[20:16] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[20:17] Speaker 3: Because there's money left over and that money comes down
[20:21] Speaker 3: to them. And what we did see for a while
[20:25] Speaker 3: and why they had to change these things up was
[20:27] Speaker 3: starting with the decision. We did see some guys start
[20:30] Speaker 3: being willing to give up a little money to make
[20:32] Speaker 3: something happen because the NBA's whole thing was, we'll just
[20:34] Speaker 3: money with you. Like, that's how we'll get the guys
[20:37] Speaker 3: to stay on teams. We're just going to money whip you.
[20:40] Speaker 3: Now they're like, we don't really care if you stay
[20:43] Speaker 3: on teams. How about that?
[20:44] Speaker 2: When you think about it, it's a really weird play.
[20:47] Speaker 3: In the end, there used to be all these things
[20:48] Speaker 3: with the CBA to let you go over to keep
[20:51] Speaker 3: your own players, right? All the things that you can
[20:53] Speaker 3: do to keep your own players, to give you the
[20:54] Speaker 3: advantage and your ability to keep your own players so
[20:57] Speaker 3: they wouldn't go anywhere else. Now the game has changed
[20:59] Speaker 3: because these guys don't even wait till free agency anymore.
[21:02] Speaker 3: They sign the deals early and then they force a trade, right?
[21:06] Speaker 3: Which has now led to this evolution of the game
[21:09] Speaker 3: where they're like, okay, well, we're just going to have
[21:11] Speaker 3: to just keep moving guys around.
[21:12] Speaker 2: How about that?
[21:13] Speaker 3: It's just going to be like this game of musical chairs, basically,
[21:16] Speaker 3: to get the guys out. But what it should never
[21:19] Speaker 3: be is cats got to feel like they should give
[21:21] Speaker 3: up bread.
[21:23] Speaker 4: Especially in their first big contract, right? Like this is
[21:25] Speaker 4: not like, I mean, right.
[21:28] Speaker 2: And to be clear, he took what would have been
[21:31] Speaker 2: the max. This is Victor. He took what would have
[21:34] Speaker 2: been the max.
[21:35] Speaker 3: Had he not been defensive player of the year, because
[21:38] Speaker 3: that entitled him to the 30% max, the Derrick Rose max,
[21:42] Speaker 3: as opposed to the 25% max. He just took the 25%.
[21:47] Speaker 4: But the 30% max is created for players like Victor Wimminyama.
[21:51] Speaker 2: You have to earn it.
[21:52] Speaker 4: Right, exactly.
[21:53] Speaker 2: They put a whole provision in on purpose.
[21:56] Speaker 1: Yes.
[21:57] Speaker 3: It's why it's called the Derrick Rose rule, right?
[22:00] Speaker 2: It's put in specifically. I think Derrick Rose was the
[22:03] Speaker 2: first guy to get it. That's why it became him.
[22:04] Speaker 3: But it's like, it's put there specifically for guys like
[22:08] Speaker 3: you to be able to cash in. And I'm sorry,
[22:12] Speaker 3: a world where guys do that is the greatest thing
[22:15] Speaker 3: to ever happen to the bosses. The outright greatest thing
[22:21] Speaker 3: to ever happen to the bosses. And that kind of stinks, right?
[22:25] Speaker 3: So anybody else that's out there, I'm just telling you
[22:27] Speaker 3: right now, you don't have to.
[22:29] Speaker 4: Do this shit.
[22:30] Speaker 3: If you want to, It's your world. But, like, you
[22:35] Speaker 3: don't have to do that. I don't know if you've
[22:39] Speaker 3: ever seen Chappelle's got a bit he does where he
[22:40] Speaker 3: talks about when he walked away from the Comedy Central money.
[22:45] Speaker 5: Yes.
[22:46] Speaker 3: And he said, you know, I didn't get paid the
[22:48] Speaker 3: $ 50 million. But I did get paid, I think we'll
[22:52] Speaker 3: call it, let's just say the number was, like, closer
[22:54] Speaker 3: to $ 10 million.
[22:55] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[22:55] Speaker 2: And he's like, look, the difference between $ 50 million and
[22:58] Speaker 2: $ 10 million isn't that big in applications.
[23:02] Speaker 3: You still go to the same places with $ 10 million
[23:04] Speaker 3: that you will with $ 50 million. You still hang out
[23:06] Speaker 3: with the same people. You can still do all these same.
[23:09] Speaker 2: Things, da, da, da.
[23:11] Speaker 3: And he says, in the end, the difference between $ 50
[23:15] Speaker 3: million and $ 10 million is a mere $ 40 million. And
[23:24] Speaker 3: however you hear that, that is real.
[23:27] Speaker 4: Right.
[23:27] Speaker 3: Like I remember we were talking about Buddy Joel, about
[23:30] Speaker 3: the idea of the boy of these guys boycotting Southern schools.
[23:33] Speaker 2: He's like, we're not asking for a big sacrifice.
[23:35] Speaker 3: Just take five million dollars instead of six.
[23:38] Speaker 2: What the fuck are you talking about? We're not having
[23:40] Speaker 2: a 20 percent raise. You know, not cussing at you, Joel,
[23:43] Speaker 2: but that's a million dollars. Yeah, that's a bet. That's
[23:46] Speaker 2: a big trade. Yeah, that's a big trade.
[23:48] Speaker 3: And now what's the difference between having two hundred fifty
[23:50] Speaker 3: million dollars and three hundred million dollars? Oh, meditating Buddhist-ass Victor. Honestly,
[23:58] Speaker 3: I see him as being the guy that doesn't see
[24:00] Speaker 3: the difference. I see the difference. You know why I
[24:03] Speaker 3: see the difference? It's not even the difference about what
[24:06] Speaker 3: goes in my pocket. It's about what comes out of
[24:08] Speaker 3: your pocket. Show me that respect. Now, maybe he feels
[24:13] Speaker 3: he's already received all that respect. Maybe he's willing to,
[24:15] Speaker 3: he gets so much respect, he can give some of
[24:17] Speaker 3: his respect to.
[24:18] Speaker 2: These other guys on the team. I'm not sure.
[24:22] Speaker 3: I'm just telling Victor, when dudes start running up on
[24:24] Speaker 3: you in the locker room and asking to borrow money
[24:26] Speaker 3: because it just seemed like you were that kind of guy,
[24:30] Speaker 3: just remember why that happened, right? You showed them your benevolence.
[24:34] Speaker 3: When it comes to money, you just need to show
[24:37] Speaker 3: them your agent. On the biggest stage in the world,
[24:46] Speaker 3: FanDuel is changing the game. Because sometimes your player gets
[24:50] Speaker 3: subbed off and your bet goes with them.
[24:53] Speaker 2: Not anymore.
[24:54] Speaker 3: With FanDuel Super Sub, if your player is subbed out,
[24:57] Speaker 3: your bet stays in.
[24:59] Speaker 2: That's right.
[24:59] Speaker 3: If your player leaves the match, your bet continues all
[25:02] Speaker 3: with the substitute. So you're still in it until the
[25:05] Speaker 3: final whistle. Because in matches like these, anything can happen
[25:09] Speaker 3: and now your bet can go to the distance.
[25:12] Speaker 2: Let there be goals this summer on FanDuel.

[26:10] Speaker 4: news and information of the day. No need for the
[26:13] Speaker 4: social media feeds. We got you. Now, if you haven't heard.
[26:17] Speaker 4: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, brought to you
[26:20] Speaker 4: by FanDuel. Number one, number two pick dueled off on
[26:24] Speaker 4: Thursday night for FanDuel. AJ Devonsa taking on Darren Peterson.
[26:28] Speaker 4: You were at that game. What were your thoughts?
[26:31] Speaker 2: I think we need to figure out how to use
[26:33] Speaker 2: this boy.
[26:33] Speaker 3: They was in there dueling off. You know what I'm saying?
[26:36] Speaker 3: The boys dueling off in front of everybody. So I
[26:39] Speaker 3: was there for that game. It was very interesting. And
[26:42] Speaker 3: the arena was heavily invested because, you know, especially those
[26:45] Speaker 3: of us on the East, we don't think too much about.
[26:47] Speaker 2: The geography of it. But Utah, very close.
[26:52] Speaker 1: Okay?
[26:52] Speaker 3: Like, I went to the Grand Canyon while I was
[26:55] Speaker 3: out there.
[26:55] Speaker 2: You can go there from Utah also. I didn't realize that.
[26:57] Speaker 2: You can go from Vegas, you can go from Phoenix,
[26:58] Speaker 2: you can go from Utah. I didn't realize that.
[26:59] Speaker 4: I mean, there's multiple sides of the Grand Canyon. It's
[27:01] Speaker 4: a big thing.
[27:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[27:02] Speaker 2: But either way, the proximity is that it's close enough.
[27:05] Speaker 4: Oh, not yet.
[27:06] Speaker 3: So what you had was on one side, the BYU guy.
[27:10] Speaker 3: On the other side, the Utah Jazz. So, like, Utah
[27:14] Speaker 3: was in the house.
[27:16] Speaker 2: For that game. Those boys are going to be all-stars. Very,
[27:20] Speaker 2: very close. very soon.
[27:22] Speaker 3: And they were both, by the way, very heavily invested
[27:25] Speaker 3: in that game.
[27:26] Speaker 4: They don't like each other.
[27:27] Speaker 2: It does. They do not want it.
[27:29] Speaker 3: The thing you got to remember is from talking to
[27:32] Speaker 3: guys like around the circuit, Peterson was seen by a
[27:34] Speaker 3: lot of people as absolutely that guy. Like I said,
[27:36] Speaker 3: I mean, there, there are more people, the people who
[27:39] Speaker 3: think the Bansa is better than Peterson are not nearly
[27:43] Speaker 3: as dismissive as the people who think Peterson is better than.
[27:47] Speaker 2: The Bansa, you know, like it's really there. Um, Peterson
[27:52] Speaker 2: is that guy.
[27:52] Speaker 3: The only thing I wondered about Peterson from watching how
[27:55] Speaker 3: he's being guarded, again, it's summer league basketball, which is weird,
[27:58] Speaker 3: but those guys are getting really physical with him and
[28:00] Speaker 3: he didn't seem quite as equipped to handle it, which
[28:02] Speaker 3: seems a little strange because he's got an NBA body,
[28:04] Speaker 3: so to speak. DeBansa, 6'9, coming downhill, dog. There's something
[28:10] Speaker 3: to that. He's coming to yam on people, everything else.
[28:13] Speaker 3: I will say one last thing, and I think it's
[28:15] Speaker 3: important just for people to know. I talked to somebody
[28:18] Speaker 3: who's affiliated with the Kansas program. And I asked the
[28:25] Speaker 3: read on Peterson and the guy couldn't have been more unequivocal.
[28:29] Speaker 3: He said, Kansas did him a disservice with the narratives
[28:35] Speaker 3: that surrounded him. Like disservice was the word that was used.
[28:40] Speaker 3: I'm just saying whatever the apprehensions may be that you
[28:43] Speaker 3: have about Peterson from what happened at Kansas, the people
[28:46] Speaker 3: at Kansas don't have those apprehensions.
[28:49] Speaker 2: Throwing it out there.
[28:50] Speaker 4: That's interesting, especially that, you know, they spent so much
[28:52] Speaker 4: time with him over the last few months. All right.
[28:55] Speaker 4: Some more basketball news. The Clippers rafters trades centered around
[28:59] Speaker 4: Kawhi Leonard is on hold and will not be completed
[29:03] Speaker 4: until the NBA investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented the
[29:07] Speaker 4: salary cap is completed. That got announced on Thursday. They
[29:12] Speaker 4: silver said they hope to finish this investigation and process
[29:16] Speaker 4: in a few weeks. Bo, what are your thoughts?
[29:18] Speaker 3: Um, If it takes weeks, they're being ridiculous. Like, I don't... Wow,
[29:25] Speaker 3: that seems crazy to me, if it would take weeks.
[29:28] Speaker 2: I will tell you this, though.
[29:29] Speaker 3: If I'm talking to people, you know, in the league
[29:32] Speaker 3: office there, nobody knows.
[29:37] Speaker 2: This one is wrapped up tight. It seems to be.
[29:40] Speaker 3: A very need-to-know situation on what's going on with this investigation.
[29:48] Speaker 3: From the conversations I was having while I was around there,
[29:52] Speaker 3: the Clippers are unequivocal. They didn't do anything wrong. They firmly, firmly,
[29:59] Speaker 3: firmly are riding out the idea they didn't do anything wrong.
[30:01] Speaker 3: If you saw the union statement about it, they are unequivocal.
[30:06] Speaker 3: Kawhi didn't do anything wrong. I have no idea if
[30:09] Speaker 3: that is true, but ordinarily there's a level of equivocation
[30:13] Speaker 3: that you see from guilty parties that hasn't come from anybody.
[30:17] Speaker 3: We've seen what bombers had to say about this. That's
[30:21] Speaker 3: just for whatever it's worth. Nobody seems to think that
[30:24] Speaker 3: trade is actually going to be on hold.
[30:27] Speaker 2: For whatever it's worth. But I can't believe this is
[30:31] Speaker 2: still going on, right?
[30:33] Speaker 3: It's gone on so long that people are now more
[30:36] Speaker 3: loudly saying, in public at least, do we care? You know,
[30:42] Speaker 3: I think that's the big question, that in the end,
[30:45] Speaker 3: I don't think there's going to be a satisfying ending
[30:47] Speaker 3: to this for anybody. I think that if the league
[30:50] Speaker 3: says nothing happened, there will be many people who find
[30:53] Speaker 3: it to be conspiratorial.
[30:55] Speaker 1: Um.
[30:56] Speaker 3: I think if they say something happened and the punishment
[31:00] Speaker 3: is not heavy, then people are going to say or
[31:04] Speaker 3: a certain segment of people will say you're just defending
[31:07] Speaker 3: Steve Ballmer. If they do say something happened and the
[31:11] Speaker 3: penalty is harsh, those of us with good sense are
[31:13] Speaker 3: going to say, who cares?
[31:16] Speaker 2: Right. Like in the end, deep down.
[31:19] Speaker 3: They paid their max guy a little extra money. That
[31:23] Speaker 3: is what leads me to believe, by the way, that
[31:25] Speaker 3: nothing happened because I've never understood what the incentives.
[31:29] Speaker 2: Were for the Clippers to do all this.
[31:32] Speaker 3: To pay extra money to somebody that nobody else could
[31:35] Speaker 3: pay as much money as they did.
[31:37] Speaker 1: Right.
[31:38] Speaker 4: It's not a bidding war.
[31:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
[31:40] Speaker 3: That's the part that nobody can explain to me. Like
[31:43] Speaker 3: when Joe Smith, the legendary cap circumvention situation, and also
[31:47] Speaker 3: the Clippers tried it with DeAndre Jordan, but that period,
[31:50] Speaker 3: Joe Smith and DeAndre Jordan, those are the guys that
[31:53] Speaker 3: you circumvent the cap for.
[31:54] Speaker 2: And I know that sounds crazy. You're like, those guys
[31:56] Speaker 2: aren't even that good. Yes, exactly.
[31:59] Speaker 3: You get those guys to take a little bit, you
[32:01] Speaker 3: get those guys to take less money for the cap
[32:04] Speaker 3: and then you figure out Because.
[32:06] Speaker 4: Your max guys get a max slot and they get
[32:08] Speaker 4: a max slot.
[32:09] Speaker 3: This is, yes, this is exactly what we're saying, right?
[32:12] Speaker 3: You tell that guy, come here for a little bit extra,
[32:13] Speaker 3: a little bit, don't worry, we got you, right? Because
[32:16] Speaker 3: somebody else is offering them more. Nobody else is offering
[32:20] Speaker 3: more for a guy that badly wanted to play in
[32:22] Speaker 3: Southern California.
[32:23] Speaker 2: Like that's my only thing, right?
[32:26] Speaker 3: When it really comes down to the end, I think
[32:28] Speaker 3: it was a very interesting story when it came out
[32:31] Speaker 3: and Pablo's presentation of it caught a lot of attention.
[32:34] Speaker 3: but I do think as more time passed that more
[32:37] Speaker 3: people were kind of like, yeah, I mean, I.
[32:42] Speaker 4: Guess, right?
[32:43] Speaker 3: Like this, I don't think this is the corruption that's
[32:45] Speaker 3: really driving anybody crazy, but I am intrigued by the
[32:51] Speaker 3: fact that the accused parties are so unequivocal in saying
[32:56] Speaker 3: we have nothing to hide.
[32:58] Speaker 2: There's no, they're there.
[33:00] Speaker 3: Um, But I don't know what Adam can or can't
[33:03] Speaker 3: tell the law firm that's in it. But there's no
[33:06] Speaker 3: reason for this to continue. And especially if it's like
[33:08] Speaker 3: holding up this trade. I think it was Shams that
[33:10] Speaker 3: reported that when the Clippers were playing in the summer
[33:14] Speaker 3: league games, the guys they got in the trade were sitting.
[33:17] Speaker 2: On the Clippers bench. Right.
[33:18] Speaker 4: And they still are.
[33:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[33:19] Speaker 2: Nobody thinks this trade is getting held up.
[33:21] Speaker 4: I mean, Kawhi was in Toronto for.
[33:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, they did for the Kyle Lowry thing.
[33:26] Speaker 1: Right.
[33:26] Speaker 2: But that was before the word had gotten out. Right.
[33:28] Speaker 2: That the trade was on hold.
[33:29] Speaker 1: Right.
[33:30] Speaker 4: Right.
[33:31] Speaker 3: But the long and the short is nobody thinks this
[33:33] Speaker 3: trade is going to get held up. which is an
[33:35] Speaker 3: indicator to me that nobody thinks anything.
[33:38] Speaker 2: Big is going to happen as a result of this.
[33:42] Speaker 2: We're going to see, right?
[33:44] Speaker 3: But the NBA, it's time to call it.
[33:48] Speaker 2: It's time to street lights on time to come home.
[33:51] Speaker 4: All right. You talked about this a couple of times,
[33:53] Speaker 4: but the McGregor fight was in Vegas the week and
[33:55] Speaker 4: you were there and it didn't last very long. Conor
[33:57] Speaker 4: McGregor made it about one minute until having to leave
[34:00] Speaker 4: with an apparent knee injury. His first fight in over
[34:04] Speaker 4: five years. Doesn't make it over two minutes against Max Holloway. Bo,
[34:10] Speaker 4: is this the last we see of Conor McGregor?
[34:12] Speaker 2: I mean, one would hope.
[34:14] Speaker 3: But if he comes back and say he gonna fight,
[34:17] Speaker 3: you think people will watch? Because I think they would.
[34:22] Speaker 3: Question number two, what his money looking like? Like, I
[34:25] Speaker 3: don't know how this goes for the MMA guys versus the.
[34:27] Speaker 2: Boxers, but when you need a little money.
[34:31] Speaker 3: Come on, ding, and throw hands one more time. By
[34:33] Speaker 3: the way, I don't... Ryan, you ever been in Vegas
[34:35] Speaker 3: for a fight weekend?
[34:36] Speaker 4: I have not.
[34:37] Speaker 3: Okay, so I have been in Vegas for a couple
[34:40] Speaker 3: of fight weekends, but never for the fight.
[34:42] Speaker 2: I was just there. And so you just get the vibes.
[34:45] Speaker 3: On the floor in all the casinos of what happened
[34:48] Speaker 3: because you're not even really paying attention. And the fight
[34:51] Speaker 3: goes on early in the evening West Coast time because
[34:54] Speaker 3: of East Coast television. So it'll be like 9 o'clock,
[34:57] Speaker 3: 10 o'clock, whatever.
[34:58] Speaker 4: And they all get out of there.
[34:59] Speaker 3: Yeah, you get out of concert and they all get
[35:00] Speaker 3: out of there. So like, for example, I was there
[35:03] Speaker 3: once when Canelo lost a fight. and buddy it was
[35:05] Speaker 3: some unpleasant mexicans walking around there some sad some mad
[35:09] Speaker 3: i didn't want to i didn't want to get in
[35:11] Speaker 3: the way of any of them but i'm just walking
[35:13] Speaker 3: around and the mcgregorites i just they just look i
[35:17] Speaker 3: don't know not plus like it was very difficult to
[35:20] Speaker 3: get what the energy was only to find out that
[35:22] Speaker 3: they do they kicked his knee off that's an old
[35:25] Speaker 3: man injury if it has ever ever been an old
[35:28] Speaker 3: man injury but i bet he still got his check.
[35:30] Speaker 4: Um Speaking of MMA and boxers, I think we're going
[35:33] Speaker 4: to see him box again against someone else who might
[35:36] Speaker 4: need some money pretty soon.
[35:38] Speaker 2: I mean, here's my question. Why is it not against
[35:40] Speaker 2: Jake Paul?
[35:42] Speaker 3: I don't know if Jake Paul fights white people, but
[35:45] Speaker 3: that seems to be the most obvious fight.
[35:47] Speaker 4: The one time he fought a white person, he lost.
[35:49] Speaker 3: Right, right.
[35:50] Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. That's right. Tyson Fury's brother.
[35:52] Speaker 1: Yes.
[35:53] Speaker 2: But I mean, I think this makes sense, right? Like
[35:55] Speaker 2: they're both amateur boxers.
[35:58] Speaker 4: McGregor will be a, will be a, I mean, if Tyson,
[36:01] Speaker 4: obviously Conor McGregor was never Mike Tyson, but Mike Tyson
[36:04] Speaker 4: is still a draw at over six.
[36:07] Speaker 2: I completely forgot that happened.
[36:10] Speaker 4: It happened multiple times.
[36:12] Speaker 2: I completely forgot that Jake Paul fought Mai Tais. Wow.
[36:17] Speaker 2: What is this world?
[36:20] Speaker 4: Where are we?
[36:20] Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
[36:22] Speaker 4: All right, Bo. A couple of voicemails. We had a
[36:31] Speaker 4: lot of people with Jalen Brown thoughts. Let's start there.
[36:36] Speaker 1: Here's the thing about Jalen Brown. I mean, we have
[36:40] Speaker 1: to quiet the nonsense around this tree.
[36:43] Speaker 6: When you're Scottie Pippen, but you think you're MJ, you
[36:48] Speaker 6: got to go.
[36:49] Speaker 2: And that's that.
[36:55] Speaker 3: I have to say, when you put it in those terms,
[36:57] Speaker 3: I was going to throw something out there about Jalen
[37:01] Speaker 3: Brown from when I was there. I saw some of
[37:03] Speaker 3: these quotes from these interviews that Jalen Brown has been doing,
[37:05] Speaker 3: and I don't want to do that right now.
[37:09] Speaker 1: I don't.
[37:12] Speaker 2: I will just say this very briefly. He is sounding
[37:18] Speaker 2: very familiar to me in a lot of these interviews.
[37:22] Speaker 2: And he sounds very familiar because I have taught college
[37:25] Speaker 2: freshmen before. And I don't mean that as an insult,
[37:29] Speaker 2: but like there's that energy, there's that kind of curiosity.
[37:32] Speaker 2: He's got these opinions, but they clearly haven't been tested yet.
[37:35] Speaker 4: Right like he has more books than people who went
[37:37] Speaker 4: to his high school but not more books than people
[37:39] Speaker 4: he's around.
[37:39] Speaker 3: Now oh yeah yeah you know i was thinking about
[37:41] Speaker 3: the book reading part right is that these he has
[37:44] Speaker 3: a lot of thoughts that have not been approached with
[37:47] Speaker 3: rigor so like his whole thing about um the agent
[37:50] Speaker 3: model is broken because guys go broke i was like
[37:53] Speaker 3: that's not how that works like that's not those guys
[37:56] Speaker 3: job you don't okay so now you don't have an
[37:59] Speaker 3: agent is that going to stop you from going broke
[38:01] Speaker 3: right like that doesn't like Again, these are things that
[38:04] Speaker 3: make sense on their face, and then they just don't
[38:07] Speaker 3: hold up to but so many questions. And that's what
[38:11] Speaker 3: I've been seeing in him is like, oh, okay, I
[38:13] Speaker 3: get it. It's not like there's nothing there, but that's
[38:17] Speaker 3: how it is when you teach college freshmen, right? You
[38:19] Speaker 3: come in and you got all these ideas, and then
[38:21] Speaker 3: the professor sons you, and then you get better and
[38:24] Speaker 3: it builds you back.
[38:25] Speaker 2: Up, right?
[38:26] Speaker 3: And I just don't think he's been in that circumstance,
[38:28] Speaker 3: but that's the discussion. The thing I wanted to bring
[38:31] Speaker 3: up about him that I did think was interesting and
[38:33] Speaker 3: important to point out is that and for me on
[38:35] Speaker 3: my end, because I think some people misunderstand me. I
[38:38] Speaker 3: think his heart is in the right place on all
[38:40] Speaker 3: of these things. I think what he wants and I
[38:42] Speaker 3: think I think he has identified the way I see things.
[38:45] Speaker 2: He is properly identified for the most part. Who are
[38:48] Speaker 2: the good guys and who are the bad guys, right?
[38:50] Speaker 3: I think he has identified the causes that matter the most.
[38:54] Speaker 3: I don't think he's always as equipped in conversation, but
[38:57] Speaker 3: I do think it's important to note that I would
[39:00] Speaker 3: say that he and I are on the same side,
[39:02] Speaker 3: and I don't want to be but so mean towards
[39:04] Speaker 3: somebody that's on a different side. And so I was
[39:07] Speaker 3: talking to somebody who's around the Celtics, a couple of Celtics,
[39:12] Speaker 3: and he made a very good point that I hadn't
[39:15] Speaker 3: thought about.
[39:15] Speaker 2: And he was like, let me tell you this.
[39:16] Speaker 3: He's like black Boston is going to really miss Jalen Brown,
[39:20] Speaker 3: like that he went out of his way to develop
[39:23] Speaker 3: a relationship with the black population of Boston in a
[39:29] Speaker 3: way that. I don't want to say is unprecedented because
[39:32] Speaker 3: that's too far, but it's not a guarantee.
[39:34] Speaker 2: From members of the Celtics, right? And so he's their guy.
[39:37] Speaker 3: So when it comes around next year and he's going
[39:40] Speaker 3: to Boston Garden and he's getting booed and people are
[39:43] Speaker 3: talking about, oh, but you know how Boston feels, da-da-da, that's.
[39:46] Speaker 2: Some of Boston, right?
[39:47] Speaker 3: Like, I got into an argument on the internet many
[39:49] Speaker 3: years ago with a guy, and if you know anything,
[39:51] Speaker 3: you'll know who I'm talking about, but don't be messy.
[39:55] Speaker 3: And I felt like we had a great misunderstanding. It
[39:58] Speaker 3: just got to be like, oh, man, this is one
[39:59] Speaker 3: of these cats that really rides for Boston and really
[40:01] Speaker 3: loves Boston, right?
[40:02] Speaker 2: And I get it.
[40:03] Speaker 3: And I realized what the issue was. And it's, he's
[40:05] Speaker 3: a black dude from Boston and they feel very erased.
[40:09] Speaker 3: They're like, when people talk about Boston and who lives there,
[40:12] Speaker 3: you know, who, I mean, I don't have to tell
[40:13] Speaker 3: you the image that you get in your head. There
[40:15] Speaker 3: are a lot of black people in Boston. It's one
[40:18] Speaker 3: of those cities though, where you don't meet black Bostonians
[40:21] Speaker 3: outside of Boston.
[40:23] Speaker 2: There's a lot of cities like that Cleveland. Like how
[40:25] Speaker 2: often do you meet people from Cleveland outside of Cleveland?
[40:27] Speaker 4: That's fair.
[40:28] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[40:29] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[40:29] Speaker 2: You know what it means?
[40:29] Speaker 3: And so, That dude, I think that his anger was misdirected,
[40:36] Speaker 3: but I understood the source of his anger was the
[40:38] Speaker 3: idea that we are here and you just keep acting
[40:40] Speaker 3: like everybody in Boston sounds like that. Even though y'all
[40:45] Speaker 3: talk like them too. But still, I got where he
[40:48] Speaker 3: was coming from on that. But anyway, this would be
[40:50] Speaker 3: an example of why somebody like that would wind up
[40:53] Speaker 3: being frustrated because there is a whole section of Boston
[40:56] Speaker 3: that I guarantee is going to be very sad to
[40:59] Speaker 3: see Jalen Brown go. but they're not going to be
[41:01] Speaker 3: the ones booing his black ass to smithereens when the
[41:04] Speaker 3: Sixers come back to the garden.
[41:06] Speaker 1: All right.
[41:06] Speaker 4: We had some more Jalen Brown thoughts.
[41:10] Speaker 5: What's up, Bobani?
[41:11] Speaker 4: What's up, Brian? This is Jordan and Charlotte.
[41:13] Speaker 6: I just listened to the pod with Burnham and Maxwell,
[41:16] Speaker 6: and I got to say, I really enjoyed it. You
[41:18] Speaker 6: definitely got to bring him back on as a guest,
[41:21] Speaker 6: but I do have to say Jalen Brown and his
[41:24] Speaker 6: top five ridiculous, what I call Vern ridiculous to his face.
[41:29] Speaker 4: Absolutely not.
[41:30] Speaker 2: But, That's ridiculous.
[41:32] Speaker 6: Anyway, that's not why I called. I counted 57 fucks, motherfuckers,
[41:38] Speaker 6: motherfuckers from Vern, and I just wanted to ask, after
[41:41] Speaker 6: a call like that, after a recording like that, do
[41:44] Speaker 6: you got to call mom and warn her before she listens? Anyway,
[41:47] Speaker 6: I appreciate what you do. I've been a long-time listener
[41:50] Speaker 6: and look forward to your continued success. Appreciate it.
[41:52] Speaker 1: Thanks.
[41:55] Speaker 2: Number one, that number is lower than I expected.
[41:58] Speaker 4: You have to remember that's more than one a minute.
[42:01] Speaker 3: And yet and still, it is lower than I expected.
[42:06] Speaker 3: I actually probably should have warned her. I forgot to.
[42:09] Speaker 2: I talked to her when I was in Vegas, so
[42:10] Speaker 2: we were talking about some other stuff. I did not
[42:12] Speaker 2: warn her.
[42:12] Speaker 3: First of all, Vernon sent an apology on Twitter. And
[42:17] Speaker 3: my mother sent me a text that said, Vernon Maxwell
[42:20] Speaker 3: needs to expand his vocabulary.
[42:22] Speaker 2: I showed her Vernon's apology, and she said, I accept.
[42:26] Speaker 2: I love how immediately everyone was like, oh, man, Bo's
[42:29] Speaker 2: mom's not going to like this.
[42:31] Speaker 3: She has absolutely become like the silent partner of this operation.
[42:36] Speaker 2: Everybody knows she's there. Everybody understands.
[42:38] Speaker 4: As she should be. All right. Here's another one. Hey, Bomani.
[42:42] Speaker 1: This is Edmund in Phoenix listening to the Danny Parkins
[42:46] Speaker 1: podcast and him reading from his suburban newspaper. I thought
[42:50] Speaker 1: of like, you know, some stories. What was the dumbest
[42:53] Speaker 1: thing ever? you've got the cops called on you for.
[42:56] Speaker 1: So this is what happened to me and my brother.
[42:59] Speaker 1: My grandmother lived in a retirement community called Saddle Bronc
[43:03] Speaker 1: in Tucson, Arizona. It was the worst, most boring place
[43:08] Speaker 1: in the world, but that's a separate story. Anyway, my
[43:11] Speaker 1: brother and I get hired to do some yard work
[43:14] Speaker 1: for one of her neighbors, you know, make a couple
[43:16] Speaker 1: bucks when we're in high school. Anyway, we're in her
[43:19] Speaker 1: front yard and we're trimming down grapefruit and and collecting
[43:23] Speaker 1: the grapefruit so that we could either, you know, donate
[43:25] Speaker 1: it or get rid of it or something. We finished
[43:27] Speaker 1: the job. My brother and I are walking back to
[43:31] Speaker 1: my grandmother's house from her neighbor's house, and this woman cop,
[43:37] Speaker 1: you know, for this retirement community, rolls up on us
[43:39] Speaker 1: in a golf cart, and, like, she's in the movie Heat.
[43:43] Speaker 1: She thinks that we are pretty much, you know, like,
[43:46] Speaker 1: we need to get on the ground, you know, put
[43:48] Speaker 1: our hands behind our back, And she rolls up on
[43:50] Speaker 1: us and she says, we got a report from a
[43:52] Speaker 1: neighbor that there were two high schoolers stealing grapefruit from
[43:57] Speaker 1: another person's yard. Anyway, we told them what happened. We
[44:00] Speaker 1: had to walk the security guard back to the neighbor
[44:05] Speaker 1: and knock on the door, tell them that we.
[44:07] Speaker 2: Were working for them.
[44:08] Speaker 1: And, like, you know, she had to, like, check it out.
[44:10] Speaker 1: But anyway, we got the retirement community cops called on
[44:15] Speaker 1: us for trimming grapefruit in someone's yard. Anyway, love the show,
[44:20] Speaker 1: love Danny Parkins reading out his newsletter or his newspaper.
[44:27] Speaker 2: Hey, and Ryan, that's what they did to Edmund.
[44:33] Speaker 4: Yes. Do you think the cops from Danny's neighborhood retire
[44:38] Speaker 4: and go become retirement cops in this place in Scottsdale?
[44:41] Speaker 3: That's a very good question, but I'd say it is,
[44:43] Speaker 3: but that was a reminder of, and it's very important, man,
[44:46] Speaker 3: old people ain't got no time to be thinking about this.
[44:51] Speaker 3: Old people ain't giving you no chance.
[44:54] Speaker 2: None. I'll just call the cops. I paid a lot
[44:58] Speaker 2: of taxes for those.
[44:59] Speaker 4: All right, here's our last one.
[45:01] Speaker 5: What's up, Bo? What's up, man?
[45:03] Speaker 1: Love the show.
[45:04] Speaker 5: Long time listener, first time caller. I wanted to call
[45:07] Speaker 5: about the favorite topic of the voicemail line. So back
[45:10] Speaker 5: in 2014, I changed jobs and I started doing some
[45:13] Speaker 5: district operations work. Originally, I was supposed to be supporting
[45:17] Speaker 5: one district manager in one district a couple days before
[45:20] Speaker 5: I started. My direct manager calls me. He's like, hey,
[45:22] Speaker 5: you're actually going to be supporting two districts and two
[45:25] Speaker 5: district managers. And so I asked him, did my predecessor leave?
[45:28] Speaker 1: And he says, no.
[45:29] Speaker 5: And then he says her name and just says she's
[45:31] Speaker 5: going to be moving to a different district, but she's
[45:34] Speaker 5: still going to train. So I'm like, OK, cool. First day,
[45:38] Speaker 5: I'm supposed to go meet with the second district manager
[45:40] Speaker 5: because I hadn't met her yet. It's in a black
[45:42] Speaker 5: part of Birmingham. Everyone in the office that I see
[45:46] Speaker 5: is a black person. And so based on the name
[45:49] Speaker 5: I got, this is living up to my expectations. And
[45:52] Speaker 5: so after we're finishing doing the paperwork, me and the
[45:56] Speaker 5: district manager are kind of just doing a small little
[45:58] Speaker 5: get-to-know-you chat, and she apologizes for springing it on me
[46:01] Speaker 5: last minute and says that after she heard about my interview,
[46:06] Speaker 5: she felt that I would be a better fit for
[46:07] Speaker 5: her team personality-wise. Now, that probably should have been a
[46:11] Speaker 5: clue as to what I was about to walk into,
[46:13] Speaker 5: but I didn't think anything of it. So we go
[46:15] Speaker 5: around the corner. to where my office is going to
[46:17] Speaker 5: be that I'm going to be splitting with my predecessor
[46:19] Speaker 5: for the time being. And when I walk in, I
[46:21] Speaker 5: see this older white lady in her late 40s. And
[46:25] Speaker 5: she looks like she could have stepped right out of
[46:27] Speaker 5: that old soap opera Dallas. And she stands up and
[46:31] Speaker 5: extends her hand and says, hi, I'm Jaquetta in the
[46:34] Speaker 5: thickest Alabama accent I've ever heard. And it took everything
[46:40] Speaker 5: in me not to look over at the district manager
[46:41] Speaker 5: and be like, are you serious? But after five minutes
[46:45] Speaker 5: with her, I understood why I was a better personality fit.
[46:48] Speaker 5: If you know, you know. But as a bonus, I've
[46:51] Speaker 5: known two white Andres in my life. The first I
[46:53] Speaker 5: used to work with, he was late 40s. This is
[46:56] Speaker 5: like 2011. He went by Andy, one of my current
[46:59] Speaker 5: friends who's in his 30s. He goes by Andre. He's
[47:02] Speaker 5: a white Andre. And I told him that I was
[47:05] Speaker 5: going to make this call. And if you guys picked it,
[47:07] Speaker 5: I was going to play it for him. So if
[47:09] Speaker 5: y'all do, he's probably going to laugh. Love the show.
[47:14] Speaker 2: He tried to go with Andy, huh?
[47:16] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[47:17] Speaker 2: He tried to go with Andy.
[47:19] Speaker 3: So the thing about white Andre also is white Andre
[47:22] Speaker 3: can be French, right?
[47:24] Speaker 4: I have a cousin who's white Andre, and that's where
[47:27] Speaker 4: I'm from.
[47:28] Speaker 2: That's right.
[47:29] Speaker 3: He's not a direct homie, but shout out to homie
[47:32] Speaker 3: Cedric at the hat shop in New Orleans.
[47:34] Speaker 2: He is Cedric.
[47:35] Speaker 3: And honestly, I didn't realize it's Meyers Hat Shop down
[47:38] Speaker 3: there in the French Quarter.
[47:38] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[47:39] Speaker 2: Or not in the French Quarter. It's right on St.
[47:41] Speaker 1: Charles.
[47:42] Speaker 3: But I didn't realize that Cedric was like a member
[47:47] Speaker 3: of the family. I thought he just worked there because
[47:49] Speaker 3: his name was Cedric.
[47:52] Speaker 2: But, you know, we got that.
[47:53] Speaker 3: We throw that French out there. And then it's like, oh, OK,
[47:57] Speaker 3: anything is possible. I wonder if the people in France
[48:00] Speaker 3: like realize that me and my folks decided to take
[48:06] Speaker 3: on their names like that.
[48:09] Speaker 4: Probably wasn't what they had in mind, but, you know.
[48:11] Speaker 2: No, I just want, well, you know, they like us.
[48:14] Speaker 3: You know, like they think we're super hip. They love
[48:17] Speaker 3: Josephine Baker.
[48:18] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, you know, so there's that.
[48:22] Speaker 3: But yeah, Jaquetta, hey man, I'm just saying we a
[48:27] Speaker 3: lot more alike than we are different.
[48:30] Speaker 2: Is that fair to say?
[48:31] Speaker 4: I would agree with you.
[48:33] Speaker 3: I think we a lot more alike than we give
[48:35] Speaker 3: ourselves credit for being.
[48:36] Speaker 2: Things that we keep in mind.
