On today's episode of The Right Time, Bomani Jones discusses a funny viral moment thanks to a Coldplay concert, Shane Gillis hosting the ESPYs and unveils a few more athletes for his 'top 25 athletes of the last 25 years' list. Bo begins the show by laughing over two co-workers being put on the jumbotron at a Coldplay concert holding each other and then ducking since they were having an affair (1:30). Bo moves onto the ESPYS where he thought comedian Shane Gillis who hosted hit some of his jokes "to the moon" (10:38). Then it was time for Bo to name athletes #20 through #16 to join his list of the top 25 athletes of the last 25 years, which included two quarterbacks, an Olympic swimmer, a baseball player and a wild card addition! [0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Bobani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:11] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:15] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. We are going to resume our top 25
[0:24] Speaker 1: athletes of the last 25 years. This episode, stick around
[0:28] Speaker 1: with us. But guys, got to let you know something
[0:31] Speaker 1: just so you understand. We are taping a little bit
[0:34] Speaker 1: farther in advance than we typically do, especially for a Monday, right?
[0:38] Speaker 2: Which makes it impossible.
[0:39] Speaker 1: We can't exactly see into the future to tell you
[0:43] Speaker 1: what there is to talk about on Monday. And so
[0:46] Speaker 1: we was going to talk a little bit about something
[0:48] Speaker 1: involving Arch Manning because that's becoming a thing. But I
[0:51] Speaker 1: have to be honest with you. We are having a
[0:54] Speaker 1: morning that has involved some things that If I got
[1:01] Speaker 1: to record something right now, you're going to have to
[1:03] Speaker 1: hear me talk about them for a little bit.
[1:05] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[1:06] Speaker 1: Like very rarely am I in a situation where I'm
[1:08] Speaker 1: just going to put what I feel like talking about
[1:11] Speaker 1: ahead of the interest of the audience.
[1:12] Speaker 2: I don't really do that.
[1:14] Speaker 1: I also understand that you people have the shortest attention
[1:16] Speaker 1: spans in the world. So it's possible that maybe just
[1:19] Speaker 1: maybe you're not going to remember what this is that
[1:21] Speaker 1: we talk about right now. But I feel very confident
[1:24] Speaker 1: that you are in fact going to remember what it
[1:27] Speaker 1: is that we're talking about okay so minding my own
[1:31] Speaker 1: business i get up in the morning just got back
[1:34] Speaker 1: from vegas for work you know what i'm saying um
[1:38] Speaker 1: came across some you know i guess this is the
[1:41] Speaker 1: week that everybody found out about clay thompson and megan
[1:44] Speaker 1: the stallion i ain't gonna talk about that here right
[1:46] Speaker 1: now not not not yet you know what i'm saying
[1:49] Speaker 1: not not This is shout out to you, Clay Thompson,
[1:53] Speaker 1: by the way.
[1:53] Speaker 2: I will say this. This is the one thing I'm
[1:55] Speaker 2: going to say for Clay Thompson. And I think that
[1:57] Speaker 2: this is very, very important to note. Right.
[2:00] Speaker 1: While there was some measure of surprise that this is
[2:03] Speaker 1: where he wound up. Nobody's treating it like they did
[2:07] Speaker 1: when Russell Wilson turned up with Sierra. And trust there
[2:09] Speaker 1: were people surprised on the very same levels. But this
[2:13] Speaker 1: tells you that we think Clay is just a little
[2:15] Speaker 1: bit cooler. Just had that thought. But anyway, somebody has
[2:19] Speaker 1: sent me something about that. And then the next thing
[2:22] Speaker 1: I know, I look on, I think it must have
[2:24] Speaker 1: been the Twitter timeline. I don't think anybody sent it
[2:27] Speaker 1: to me. And they showed his clip of this couple, man.
[2:30] Speaker 2: And they look like they look so in love. You know,
[2:34] Speaker 2: they there. Right.
[2:35] Speaker 1: And they all wrapped up with each other. And apparently
[2:38] Speaker 1: they was at a Coldplay concert and the camera was
[2:41] Speaker 1: on them because they was on the Jumbotron. And they
[2:44] Speaker 1: was like the lady was in front, but it was
[2:46] Speaker 1: behind her with the arms wrapped all the way around.
[2:49] Speaker 1: You know, that's when you feeling it where it's like
[2:50] Speaker 1: it's like you hugging yourself.
[2:52] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? You go so hard with it.
[2:54] Speaker 1: Man, she looked up and saw that they was on
[2:56] Speaker 1: the jumbo tribe. Man, she put her hand over her
[2:59] Speaker 1: head and turned around. And then that white man that
[3:01] Speaker 1: was standing behind him. But I am going to say
[3:03] Speaker 1: that white man because he ducked like somebody started shooting.
[3:05] Speaker 1: And when I say that white man ducked like somebody
[3:08] Speaker 1: started shooting in your mind, you are probably thinking about
[3:11] Speaker 1: somebody hitting the ground immediately. No, that's why I said
[3:14] Speaker 1: like a white man when somebody started shooting, he ducked.
[3:18] Speaker 2: Took his time and got there.
[3:19] Speaker 1: I understand from the gray in his hair that he
[3:22] Speaker 1: probably is a little bit older and you can't hit
[3:23] Speaker 1: the ground quite in that same way. But they fully
[3:26] Speaker 1: understood that they were on the proverbial Summer Jam screen.
[3:33] Speaker 1: And Ryan, this video has captivated America. as we talk
[3:39] Speaker 1: about this, and I, well, let me go to you first. Like,
[3:43] Speaker 1: what was your thought upon seeing this?
[3:45] Speaker 3: I had several thoughts. My favorite part, and I think
[3:48] Speaker 3: you pointed this out on Twitter, is how much Chris
[3:50] Speaker 3: Martin clocked it immediately.
[3:52] Speaker 1: Yo, he was like, oh, yeah, either they're having an
[3:54] Speaker 1: affair or they're really shy.
[3:56] Speaker 2: They're having an affair, motherfucker.
[3:58] Speaker 1: You knew exactly what they was doing.
[4:00] Speaker 3: And you could almost hear, like, either the ba-dum-tsh or
[4:03] Speaker 3: the crickets. Yes. like afterwards but like he just clocks
[4:07] Speaker 3: it immediately secondly um just being that brazen to having
[4:13] Speaker 3: an affair at a very popular concert.
[4:16] Speaker 1: Yo so so this is the thing about that right
[4:20] Speaker 1: and that's that was what got me so this guy
[4:22] Speaker 1: because you know the internet they found out that he
[4:24] Speaker 1: was the ceo of something and she's the uh an
[4:28] Speaker 1: hr director yep Oh, that's that's what are y'all at
[4:33] Speaker 1: least what are y'all can't work here no more. Right.
[4:36] Speaker 1: Like like like this. This has happened. But that demographic. OK,
[4:40] Speaker 1: I was telling you about this many years ago. I
[4:42] Speaker 1: interviewed for a job with Jim Rohn and this was
[4:46] Speaker 1: back in the ringtone era. And he and I remember
[4:49] Speaker 1: the people that would just be around. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
[4:53] Speaker 2: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
[4:55] Speaker 1: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> That's what it's called. That was
[4:57] Speaker 1: what everybody's ringtone was at the time. I am saying
[5:01] Speaker 1: that to simply say that those people at that concert,
[5:06] Speaker 1: the demographic is they friends.
[5:10] Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying?
[5:11] Speaker 1: The demographic is their colleagues. That's who's gonna be there.
[5:16] Speaker 1: Even if they ain't get you on the Jumbotron, somebody
[5:19] Speaker 1: there gonna see you. And what people need to understand
[5:22] Speaker 1: in this day and age, it's very simple. The technology
[5:25] Speaker 1: makes it easier to cheat than ever. It also makes
[5:27] Speaker 1: it easier to get caught. And so I seen somebody
[5:30] Speaker 1: on the internet or Twitter that was like, why would
[5:32] Speaker 1: you cheat somewhere with a Jumbotron Hey, buddy, you late.
[5:35] Speaker 1: Everywhere got a jumbotron. It's a goddamn camera everywhere you turn.
[5:39] Speaker 1: Anything could potentially happen directly in front of you. And
[5:42] Speaker 1: this and this could be your chance. The whole world
[5:47] Speaker 1: has a jumbotron and a jumbotron is in your pocket.
[5:50] Speaker 1: they ain't getting caught up right now because they got
[5:53] Speaker 1: caught on the jumbotron they get caught up right now
[5:55] Speaker 1: because they got caught on the internet they could have
[5:57] Speaker 1: been in the crowd and a fistfight broke out in
[5:59] Speaker 1: front of them and then somebody gonna see their face
[6:02] Speaker 1: and then boom they are on the jumbotron they are
[6:06] Speaker 1: hooked and i i am trying to think what do
[6:13] Speaker 1: you do under those circumstances right Because you can't, people
[6:20] Speaker 1: are like, he should have just leaned into it.
[6:21] Speaker 2: No, sir. No, sir.
[6:24] Speaker 1: Because you're already embarrassing your spouses by being caught doing this,
[6:29] Speaker 1: which is the grand transgression, right? You got to at
[6:34] Speaker 1: least look like you care that you just messed up.
[6:37] Speaker 1: Like somebody still got to go home.
[6:41] Speaker 3: You at least have to limit the footage. Right.
[6:44] Speaker 1: Right.
[6:45] Speaker 3: Like you just can't, you can't let it go on
[6:47] Speaker 3: a nanosecond longer than it has.
[6:49] Speaker 1: I mean, look, they just put up some really bad film, right?
[6:51] Speaker 1: And the film they put up was excellent film because
[6:54] Speaker 1: the reason they got caught on screen is because.
[6:56] Speaker 2: They look so in love.
[6:58] Speaker 3: So happy.
[6:58] Speaker 2: They look so happy.
[6:59] Speaker 1: The cameraman is like, oh shit, let's go ahead and
[7:02] Speaker 1: put them on the camera.
[7:04] Speaker 3: Of all the couples in the Coldplay concert, they decided
[7:07] Speaker 3: to show how much involved they were.
[7:09] Speaker 2: Only to misunderstand, right?
[7:11] Speaker 1: So they have already demonstrated to their spouses that they
[7:14] Speaker 1: got the real thing over there, right? You got to
[7:18] Speaker 1: at least look like, oh, man, I feel bad about
[7:22] Speaker 1: what has happened. That film had to be put up.
[7:28] Speaker 1: They did go ahead and put up that film. I
[7:31] Speaker 1: saw this reminded people of who them people on Good
[7:34] Speaker 1: Morning America? Buddy from Arkansas, TJ Holmes, and whoever that
[7:39] Speaker 1: woman was that he was with. I don't remember her name.
[7:42] Speaker 3: That one from a few years ago?
[7:43] Speaker 1: Yes.
[7:44] Speaker 3: I don't remember the names, but yes, that couple.
[7:46] Speaker 2: I will tell you this.
[7:48] Speaker 1: After this all happened, I saw them out one day
[7:55] Speaker 1: at lunch. They could not have looked happier. They couldn't
[8:04] Speaker 1: have possibly looked.
[8:06] Speaker 2: Look, they were beating. They was holding hands. They was
[8:10] Speaker 2: touching each other for.
[8:10] Speaker 3: No goddamn reason.
[8:12] Speaker 2: They were glowing. They looked ecstatic. Like, that's the same
[8:15] Speaker 2: thing here.
[8:16] Speaker 1: It's also the woman right next to them in the
[8:18] Speaker 1: shot who has realized what has happened. Yeah.
[8:22] Speaker 2: And it's just like.
[8:24] Speaker 3: The Larry David of the situation.
[8:25] Speaker 2: I can't believe this is.
[8:28] Speaker 1: Then there's the other guy who he realizes the camera's
[8:31] Speaker 1: now on him and he's on camera. So he just
[8:33] Speaker 1: looks at the camera and starts pumping his fist because
[8:36] Speaker 1: he's like, oh, clearly they don't want to be on screen.
[8:39] Speaker 1: I want like two different people in this moment of
[8:43] Speaker 1: great shame for these folks jumped in front of the camera.
[8:46] Speaker 3: The Jumbotron has that effect on people.
[8:48] Speaker 2: Oh my, which for me, it would be like the opposite, man.
[8:51] Speaker 2: I'm just.
[8:52] Speaker 1: I'm just going to throw it out there that I
[8:54] Speaker 1: feel like they need to stop doing this.
[8:58] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, like you gotta, I'm
[9:05] Speaker 2: going to throw this out here just as a thought.
[9:09] Speaker 1: There are certain couples who will be at an event
[9:12] Speaker 1: like this that you may not put on camera because
[9:17] Speaker 1: you recognize that those people may not want to be
[9:21] Speaker 1: seen on.
[9:22] Speaker 2: Camera, right?
[9:25] Speaker 1: For example, I went to a concert not that long
[9:29] Speaker 1: ago and I saw one of those couples and they
[9:32] Speaker 1: were with each other and those two were trying to
[9:34] Speaker 1: pretend like they were not a couple.
[9:37] Speaker 2: They were very clearly a couple. It was no doubt.
[9:41] Speaker 1: And what made it no doubt that they was a
[9:42] Speaker 1: couple was how hard they was working to try to
[9:45] Speaker 1: act like they wasn't a couple. They just wouldn't talking
[9:47] Speaker 1: to each other. They wouldn't give each other pound, nothing.
[9:49] Speaker 1: They just, just straight ahead. They was dressed nice and
[9:53] Speaker 1: not looking at each other, not talking to each other.
[9:55] Speaker 1: And I was like, y'all are a couple. We know this,
[9:58] Speaker 1: but they would never put them on. the screen because
[10:00] Speaker 1: they would understand and be protective of their privacy. And
[10:03] Speaker 1: I'm just saying, maybe you should try to do that
[10:05] Speaker 1: with everybody, right?
[10:07] Speaker 2: That's just putting it out there.
[10:08] Speaker 1: The idea that just because we came on a date
[10:12] Speaker 1: means that our date belongs to everybody is a foolish assumption, right?
[10:17] Speaker 1: So yes, there are people that want to be on
[10:18] Speaker 1: the Jumbotron. You can find them pretty easily. Many of
[10:22] Speaker 1: them came by themselves, right? That's all I'm saying. It's
[10:27] Speaker 1: all a thought out there for that situation. Cause I
[10:30] Speaker 1: personally can not stop laughing. This, this, this, between that
[10:37] Speaker 1: and Shane Gillis at the Espy's brother, I have gotten
[10:40] Speaker 1: great entertainment.
[10:40] Speaker 2: And I'm gonna say this right now.
[10:42] Speaker 1: Shane Gillis did not hit all of them out of
[10:45] Speaker 1: the park, but he had a couple of them to
[10:47] Speaker 1: the moon. I was like, I can't believe this is happening.
[10:50] Speaker 2: There are officially no more rules at that place.
[10:53] Speaker 3: The idea of Shane Gillis hosting the ESPYs even three
[10:59] Speaker 3: years ago, certainly, you know, seven or eight years ago
[11:02] Speaker 3: at ESPN, they've come a long way. Let's put it
[11:06] Speaker 3: that way.
[11:06] Speaker 1: Shane Gillis hosting the ESPYs and Eclipse talking about pumping bass.
[11:11] Speaker 2: I don't even think. I'm not even sure Saturday Night.
[11:18] Speaker 1: Live is putting together that collection of hosts and musical guests,
[11:23] Speaker 1: but I'm just watching these dudes talk about pumping cocaine
[11:26] Speaker 1: for the ESPYs crowd, like playing a damn near 25-year-old
[11:30] Speaker 1: cocaine carol with their new cocaine carol that they have
[11:34] Speaker 1: up there, and I'm just looking at all of it,
[11:36] Speaker 1: and Shane Gillis is telling Epstein jokes, right? He went
[11:41] Speaker 1: there with the Caitlin Clark thing.
[11:44] Speaker 2: People said he was making fun of black women on
[11:45] Speaker 2: that one. I thought.
[11:47] Speaker 1: I didn't think that was what he said. Caitlin Clark
[11:49] Speaker 1: fistfights black women. He didn't say to black women fistfights
[11:51] Speaker 1: Caitlin Clark. Like maybe there's some other level that I missed.
[11:54] Speaker 3: The extended bit about the fake WNBA wife.
[11:57] Speaker 2: That that was funny.
[11:59] Speaker 1: Yeah, that was that was that was I think that
[12:02] Speaker 1: was one of those to me where you're interpreting. There
[12:06] Speaker 1: are two reasonable interpretations, right? Interpretation one is that the
[12:10] Speaker 1: joke is, ha ha, people don't know WNBA players. I
[12:13] Speaker 1: didn't think that was the joke. The joke was on
[12:15] Speaker 1: the people who do pretend to know WNBA players.
[12:18] Speaker 3: Because they want to show up. And were pandered to.
[12:20] Speaker 2: Yes. Those people exist.
[12:22] Speaker 1: Yes. Right? Like, just because the worst people in the
[12:24] Speaker 1: world are the ones most vocal about them, we cannot
[12:26] Speaker 1: pretend that those people do not exist and that they
[12:28] Speaker 1: are not occasionally funny. But I, there were, the joint
[12:33] Speaker 1: about the last time Donald Trump staged a UFC fight
[12:36] Speaker 1: at the White House.
[12:38] Speaker 2: Mike Pence almost died.
[12:40] Speaker 3: Funny. Funny.
[12:42] Speaker 2: I am bold. Those were some... He took some chances.
[12:47] Speaker 2: He missed two.
[12:48] Speaker 1: Like when he tried to redo the Norm Macdonald joke.
[12:50] Speaker 1: If you explain that you redid the Norm Macdonald joke,
[12:52] Speaker 1: which I guess you kind of sort of have to do. Yeah.
[12:56] Speaker 2: Missed the mark.
[12:57] Speaker 1: The whole thing about Donald Trump thinking that Juan Soto
[13:00] Speaker 1: was alien.
[13:01] Speaker 2: Another good one. Another good one.
[13:03] Speaker 3: It went there, but funny.
[13:05] Speaker 2: Yes, but I'm just... I my shock at that.
[13:09] Speaker 1: Right. You know, look, I worked with four in various
[13:13] Speaker 1: capacities for about 20 years.
[13:15] Speaker 2: Right.
[13:16] Speaker 1: I've known what you can and can't get away with.
[13:17] Speaker 1: I've been there for the ebbs and flows of the
[13:20] Speaker 1: things that you could do, whether it be digital or
[13:22] Speaker 1: whatever it is. Right.
[13:22] Speaker 2: Like I've seen all the changes. This is wild.
[13:26] Speaker 3: Right.
[13:26] Speaker 1: Like this is now there are officially no rules as
[13:30] Speaker 1: long as you're talking about stuff that doesn't really matter.
[13:33] Speaker 1: You know, because like talking about stuff that matters, that
[13:36] Speaker 1: there's less of that.
[13:37] Speaker 2: And look, they've concluded that people don't want that. OK.
[13:42] Speaker 1: And then they can't control anything else that anybody does
[13:45] Speaker 1: because you can't.
[13:45] Speaker 2: Control what McAfee does.
[13:46] Speaker 1: Right. And so I saw clips of that show and
[13:49] Speaker 1: was just like, this is insane. I don't I don't
[13:52] Speaker 1: know anything. that's going on over there.
[13:56] Speaker 3: You brought up a good point that kind of ties
[13:58] Speaker 3: back to the Coldplay of it all is that, you know,
[14:02] Speaker 3: one of my main takeaways from Shane Gillis is, you know,
[14:04] Speaker 3: it was a tough room, but again, going back to Coldplay,
[14:08] Speaker 3: you said that's a room of people who can't get
[14:11] Speaker 3: caught laughing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[14:13] Speaker 1: So them jokes right there, like nobody wants to be
[14:16] Speaker 1: the one to get caught laughing.
[14:17] Speaker 2: At the FC.
[14:17] Speaker 3: They understood that everywhere is a jumbotron.
[14:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. That is a great point.
[14:21] Speaker 1: That is a room full of people perfectly aware that
[14:25] Speaker 1: somebody is watching them at all times.
[14:27] Speaker 3: They're always on camera and they're always mic'd.
[14:30] Speaker 1: Nobody in there is acting like it's Comic.
[14:33] Speaker 2: View and falling out of their seats and slapping their
[14:36] Speaker 2: knee hard in their mouth like ain't nobody doing none
[14:37] Speaker 2: of that stuff. No, sir.
[14:39] Speaker 1: That was not on the board for any of those
[14:42] Speaker 1: people there. I will bring up one last thing that
[14:45] Speaker 1: came up that I also thought was very interesting, which is,
[14:48] Speaker 1: did you read, Ryan, I don't know if you had
[14:49] Speaker 1: the chance, but did you see that sad-ass story about
[14:51] Speaker 1: Joel Embiid?
[14:53] Speaker 3: I saw the breakouts. I have not read the article. Yeah.
[14:56] Speaker 2: Look, man, I couldn't read, you know, me, I don't
[14:58] Speaker 2: do recreational sass.
[14:59] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I ain't about that wallow.
[15:02] Speaker 1: I could not read the whole thing. I saw parts
[15:05] Speaker 1: of it jump out, but I am just going to
[15:07] Speaker 1: throw something out there that I think is a very
[15:09] Speaker 1: big deal and bad sign for a lot of people.
[15:11] Speaker 1: If you have an interest in the Philadelphia 76ers and
[15:13] Speaker 1: that article talked a whole lot about how sad he
[15:16] Speaker 1: is and all the stuff and everything that's happening, dah, dah, dah.
[15:19] Speaker 1: But yeah, Nobody I've talked to really came away from
[15:21] Speaker 1: that story with a clear idea of whether he is
[15:25] Speaker 1: physically ready to play basketball.
[15:26] Speaker 3: No, yeah, there was nothing in there that said Joel
[15:28] Speaker 3: Embiid's rehab is going great and he is slated to
[15:31] Speaker 3: be ready for training camp or, you know, seasons among this.
[15:34] Speaker 2: We will not see him play anytime soon.
[15:37] Speaker 1: If that's the case, if you come out of that
[15:40] Speaker 1: 50,000 words or whatever that was about his feelings and
[15:44] Speaker 1: nothing about how his knee feels.
[15:49] Speaker 2: Ruh-roh.
[15:54] Speaker 1: All right, Ryan, we are back to our top 25
[15:58] Speaker 1: athletes of the last 25 years. You can go back
[16:01] Speaker 1: and check our previous episode with athletes 25 through 21.
[16:06] Speaker 2: Also one with Spencer Hall.
[16:07] Speaker 1: So what we're going to do is we'll give you
[16:08] Speaker 1: some from the list and then we'll talk about some
[16:10] Speaker 1: context about the different athletes in the last 25 years.
[16:13] Speaker 1: Not a specific rundown of the list itself, but kind
[16:16] Speaker 1: of broader things, because I have to be able to
[16:18] Speaker 1: do this in a way where I can also live
[16:20] Speaker 1: with myself. Right. Correct.
[16:21] Speaker 3: This is not BuzzFeed.
[16:23] Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
[16:23] Speaker 2: This is what we got to do.
[16:24] Speaker 1: So look, we got, you know, we have some of
[16:26] Speaker 1: our specifications. We are doing this for North American athletes
[16:30] Speaker 1: who were 25 or younger on January 1st in the
[16:34] Speaker 1: year of our Lord 2000. That's how we do this.
[16:37] Speaker 1: We have so far gotten through 25 through 21 and
[16:39] Speaker 1: 25 through 21 athletes. were, let me get to this right,
[16:43] Speaker 1: there we go, 25 was Randy Moss, 24 Cam Newton,
[16:46] Speaker 1: 23 Albert Pujols, 22 Ray Lewis, 21 is Tim Duncan,
[16:51] Speaker 1: and now number 20 is.
[16:57] Speaker 2: A wild card selection.
[17:00] Speaker 1: Now, you guys may be wondering, what do I mean
[17:03] Speaker 1: about a wild card selection? Well, you know, first of all,
[17:06] Speaker 1: I already explained to you, I ain't going to be
[17:08] Speaker 1: arguing with you about this. You argue with yourself. I'm
[17:10] Speaker 1: coming up with content that you guys will enjoy. I
[17:12] Speaker 1: am not out here looking for fights. Not going to
[17:15] Speaker 1: argue with you. People like, how is Allen Iverson not
[17:17] Speaker 1: on the list? You don't even know what's on the
[17:19] Speaker 1: goddamn list. And you're already talking about- Yeah, we're 20% in. Yeah,
[17:23] Speaker 1: you don't even know what nothing is. How can he
[17:25] Speaker 1: not make the list? Why don't you wait and get
[17:26] Speaker 1: to the end and find out why he's not on
[17:29] Speaker 1: the list? You know what you need to understand? And
[17:30] Speaker 1: I said I wasn't going to argue with you. I'm
[17:32] Speaker 1: not arguing with you. I'm talking to you like I'm
[17:34] Speaker 1: your daddy. You know what the thing is that you
[17:36] Speaker 1: need to understand about a top 25 list? it can
[17:39] Speaker 1: only have 25 people on it. That's what you need
[17:42] Speaker 1: to understand. That's what it comes down to, no matter
[17:45] Speaker 1: what it is. So only 25 is who we talking about.
[17:49] Speaker 1: It's a lot of excellence out here.
[17:51] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
[17:52] Speaker 1: We got to start giving props to the excellence. And unfortunately,
[17:55] Speaker 1: Allen Iverson might have been number 26. You know who
[17:59] Speaker 1: else also, unfortunately, was not able to make this list?
[18:05] Speaker 1: Throw it out here, another Others Receiving Votes candidate.
[18:10] Speaker 2: What's his name? Alice Rodriguez. That's who. He can't make
[18:19] Speaker 2: the list. Alice Rodriguez got 696 home runs. He can't
[18:23] Speaker 2: make the list.
[18:24] Speaker 3: Why?
[18:24] Speaker 1: The list only got 25 people on it. So here's
[18:28] Speaker 1: what this wild card selection is, okay? Whoever it is
[18:33] Speaker 1: that you got on your mind that you think should
[18:35] Speaker 1: have made this list and did not, you got two choices.
[18:40] Speaker 1: You can put that person into the wildcard selection and
[18:45] Speaker 1: say that they made the list so that you like.
[18:48] Speaker 2: It more or, or, or.
[18:52] Speaker 1: You could take that very name and shove it up
[18:56] Speaker 1: your keister. I'm giving you two choices, right? Maybe your
[19:01] Speaker 1: keister can't handle that. I would understand if it couldn't, right?
[19:05] Speaker 1: You don't have to do it to your keister. You
[19:07] Speaker 1: can put it in the wild card spot. But if
[19:10] Speaker 1: you don't want to put it in your wild card spot,
[19:13] Speaker 1: the keister is where it goes. Brian, you seem like you.
[19:18] Speaker 2: Had something to say.
[19:20] Speaker 3: No, I was just laughing. Yes, just saying.
[19:22] Speaker 2: Like, that's just, people get mad.
[19:23] Speaker 1: Like, oh, yeah.
[19:28] Speaker 2: Especially, dude, I remember Ryan. Ryan worked at the school
[19:32] Speaker 2: when I worked up there.
[19:33] Speaker 1: And he said something about why I had no hockey
[19:34] Speaker 1: players on there. Because I don't know nothing about no hockey, right?
[19:38] Speaker 1: I am an entire committee. If it was a broader committee,
[19:41] Speaker 1: then everybody would have room to do all that stuff.
[19:43] Speaker 2: But that ain't what we got. This ain't science. I'm
[19:47] Speaker 2: just giving you this shit.
[19:48] Speaker 3: Correct.
[19:49] Speaker 1: That's it.
[19:50] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? So wild card for you.
[19:52] Speaker 1: Put whatever hockey player you want to put in there
[19:55] Speaker 1: if you want to. It's probably some soccer player out
[19:59] Speaker 1: here that I didn't think about. You can knock the
[20:01] Speaker 1: dust off of Freddie Adu and throw him in there
[20:04] Speaker 1: if you want to.
[20:05] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
[20:06] Speaker 1: You got all kinds of options for what it is
[20:09] Speaker 1: that you can do and throw them people in there.
[20:12] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[20:12] Speaker 3: Oh, oh, oh.
[20:13] Speaker 2: Another one. If you'd like.
[20:17] Speaker 1: You can put in Caitlin Clark. Christine, Brendan, listen to
[20:22] Speaker 1: the show.
[20:23] Speaker 2: Because if so, we left that spot for you.
[20:26] Speaker 3: As the producer, I'm putting in Caitlin Clark for my list.
[20:30] Speaker 2: Yes, yes. You know what?
[20:31] Speaker 3: The one who asked to decide how this show is
[20:34] Speaker 3: found via Google search, he's putting in Caitlin Clark.
[20:38] Speaker 1: I'm so glad I just said that. Go ahead and
[20:40] Speaker 1: put that in the title, brother man. I had not
[20:43] Speaker 1: really thought about the serendipity that we could have and
[20:46] Speaker 1: to put this all together until that very moment.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Go ahead. and put her in there.
[20:51] Speaker 1: And see, I have figured this out, how to at
[20:54] Speaker 1: once make this list a talking point while also allowing
[20:58] Speaker 1: you to feel like you got some agency in this situation, right?
[21:03] Speaker 1: It is a way for your opinion to matter without
[21:07] Speaker 1: me having to care about it.
[21:09] Speaker 2: Like, I can't think of anything in the.
[21:12] Speaker 1: World that brings us all together in a better way
[21:16] Speaker 1: and serves everybody's aim.
[21:18] Speaker 2: Tell me how you feel I don't have to listen.
[21:23] Speaker 2: But you still feel heard. That's what I'm talking about.
[21:32] Speaker 1: Nothing beats relaxing on a hot summer day and watching baseball.
[21:36] Speaker 1: And the simplest way to get in on the action
[21:37] Speaker 1: is to download the Pick.

[22:11] Speaker 1: yours Let me tell you about Z-Biotics pre-alcohol probiotic. Z-Biotics
[22:21] Speaker 1: pre-alcohol probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic.
[22:25] Speaker 1: It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings
[22:29] Speaker 1: after drinking.
[22:30] Speaker 2: Here's how it works.
[22:31] Speaker 1: When you drink, alcohol gets converted into a toxic byproduct
[22:35] Speaker 1: in the gut. It's a buildup of this byproduct, not dehydration,
[22:39] Speaker 1: that's to blame for rough days after drinking. Prebiotic produces
[22:43] Speaker 1: an enzyme to break this byproduct down. Just remember to
[22:47] Speaker 1: make pre-alcohol your first drink of the night, drink responsibly,
[22:50] Speaker 1: and you'll feel your best tomorrow. Summer is here, which
[22:54] Speaker 1: means more opportunities to celebrate the warm weather. Before that
[22:58] Speaker 1: backyard barbecue brew, glass of pinot watching the sunset at
[23:02] Speaker 1: the beach, or cocktail by the campfire, don't forget your
[23:05] Speaker 1: Z-Biotics pre-alcohol. Drink one before drinking and wake up feeling
[23:09] Speaker 1: great and ready to take on the next day and

[23:43] Speaker 1: the right time. Top 25 athletes of the last 25 years.
[23:47] Speaker 1: We have already told you who has been on the list.
[23:49] Speaker 1: We have told you that number 20 was the Burger
[23:51] Speaker 1: King option.
[23:52] Speaker 2: You can have it your way. And now, number 19.
[23:54] Speaker 2: Katie Ledecky is on here.
[24:01] Speaker 1: Now, you're probably saying to yourself, gee, Bomani, you don't
[24:07] Speaker 1: strike me as a person that knows too much about swimming.
[24:11] Speaker 2: I know how to do it. you're racist, okay?
[24:16] Speaker 1: I know how to do it. That's the first thing
[24:18] Speaker 1: that we could understand. I also know a lot about
[24:22] Speaker 1: like sports and races, R-A-C-E-S. I know that when Kate
[24:30] Speaker 1: and Ledecky get out there and swim for a mile,
[24:34] Speaker 1: she gets to the end of the race and she
[24:38] Speaker 1: could be dressed By the time the other people get there.
[24:42] Speaker 1: And I have been watching her do that now, I believe,
[24:45] Speaker 1: for four Olympics.
[24:47] Speaker 2: Ryan, do I have that right? Correct.
[24:50] Speaker 3: I mean, she's won the half mile at 2012, 2016,
[24:51] Speaker 3: 2020 and 2024. She's a four time Olympian. She's not
[24:52] Speaker 3: even 30 years old.
[25:01] Speaker 2: Yo, this is insane.
[25:04] Speaker 1: I find something extra special about, and we'll talk more
[25:08] Speaker 1: about other people who I think on this list fit
[25:10] Speaker 1: this description, but there is something to me extra amazing
[25:15] Speaker 1: about when I am watching somebody do something that I
[25:17] Speaker 1: don't really know that much about, And I can tell
[25:21] Speaker 1: very clearly that you are dominating this, that nobody is
[25:26] Speaker 1: in the same zone. Like if you want me to
[25:28] Speaker 1: try to figure out, I mean, also let's be fair.
[25:30] Speaker 1: It helps in these games that are just strictly about
[25:33] Speaker 1: the clock, right? Right. Okay.
[25:35] Speaker 2: Where are you finished relative to everybody else?
[25:37] Speaker 1: But there's still even something else about it where it's
[25:39] Speaker 1: like when they show those clips of her at the
[25:42] Speaker 1: end and it looked like everybody's.
[25:44] Speaker 2: Still going the other way. She looked like she laughing people.
[25:47] Speaker 3: They have to redo the television broadcast because they can
[25:49] Speaker 3: only go out so wide to show her in all
[25:51] Speaker 3: of her competitors.
[25:52] Speaker 1: Never seen anything like, okay, so actually, Ryan, you just
[25:56] Speaker 1: pointed out something that I don't think I quite grasped.
[25:59] Speaker 2: Which is, is it really the 800 that she's doing
[26:03] Speaker 2: people like that?
[26:04] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the 800.
[26:06] Speaker 1: Okay, so it ain't even as much time as I'm
[26:08] Speaker 1: thinking about to really stretch out a lead.
[26:11] Speaker 2: Correct.
[26:12] Speaker 1: Correct.
[26:13] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it is. I mean, she she she
[26:16] Speaker 3: started as a dominant 800 meter. The 1500 has been
[26:19] Speaker 3: in the last two Olympics. But like so when you
[26:21] Speaker 3: see that gap, that is in half the distance she
[26:25] Speaker 3: has to do that.
[26:26] Speaker 1: I had never considered that because like, let's be honest here.
[26:29] Speaker 1: it'd be a little bit difficult to watch them super
[26:31] Speaker 1: long swimming matches. They show all that swimming on the
[26:35] Speaker 1: Olympics because America good at it.
[26:39] Speaker 2: America's good at it.
[26:41] Speaker 1: It happens right then and you can put so often
[26:45] Speaker 1: it is the same person doing so many different events.
[26:48] Speaker 3: You can build a story up very well.
[26:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, you build a story, you can build a star really,
[26:52] Speaker 1: really fast, right?
[26:53] Speaker 2: And so we always get in there and watch it.
[26:56] Speaker 1: And swimming is interesting by like the metric that Spencer
[27:02] Speaker 1: was talking about, but you saying both, like this is
[27:03] Speaker 1: the thing that everybody has done. Swimming is something to
[27:06] Speaker 1: which everyone has a sort of theoretical access to doing,
[27:10] Speaker 1: but at least in this competitive spirit or anything else,
[27:12] Speaker 1: this is not something that everybody does. This is not
[27:15] Speaker 1: a worldwide sport. You see the competitors are primarily coming
[27:20] Speaker 1: from the United States, Europe, and Asia. You don't see
[27:25] Speaker 1: Africans out here at all. You don't see a lot
[27:27] Speaker 1: of South Americans for whatever reasons. You don't see them
[27:30] Speaker 1: so much participating in this. But I don't feel like,
[27:34] Speaker 1: you know, people talk about like, you know, there's a
[27:36] Speaker 1: cat better than Jordan who didn't get that break.
[27:37] Speaker 2: No, there's not. Right.
[27:40] Speaker 1: I don't I don't think maybe there's somebody in Africa
[27:42] Speaker 1: that's just out here swimming and ain't nobody got no
[27:44] Speaker 1: clock to understand what's cracking.
[27:45] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[27:46] Speaker 1: Like I said that intentionally, ignorantly, just so everybody is clear, because, no,
[27:50] Speaker 1: that's not happening.
[27:50] Speaker 2: Like nobody's doing this. Right. And everybody knows.
[27:56] Speaker 1: People, I guess they have different like things they could
[27:58] Speaker 1: do for training and everything else. But like the actual
[28:01] Speaker 1: act of swimming, we just all out here doing the
[28:03] Speaker 1: same stroke in the same water. And none of you
[28:06] Speaker 1: can get to where I am.
[28:09] Speaker 2: None. She gets to be number 19.
[28:11] Speaker 1: All right, Ryan, number 18.
[28:21] Speaker 2: Mike Trout.
[28:24] Speaker 3: You can talk about the anonymity of Anaheim one more time.
[28:31] Speaker 2: Part of it's the anonymity of Anaheim.
[28:34] Speaker 1: Though most of the guys we've talked about before became
[28:37] Speaker 1: anonymous in Anaheim of their own doing.
[28:40] Speaker 2: They began to play like regular people.
[28:43] Speaker 1: Albert Puholz made himself anonymous the old-fashioned way by becoming
[28:48] Speaker 1: mediocre in his 30s. That's what he managed to do.
[28:52] Speaker 1: Trout The comparison for Trout is, to me, the closest
[29:00] Speaker 1: you can get at least, is what would we have
[29:04] Speaker 1: done with Ricky Henderson in this.
[29:06] Speaker 2: Day and age?
[29:07] Speaker 1: Which is to say, what would we have done with
[29:09] Speaker 1: Ricky Henderson in a time where his power would have
[29:12] Speaker 1: been treated with a greater priority while also having the speed, right? Now,
[29:19] Speaker 1: Mike Trout is not Ricky Henderson. Howard Bryant makes the
[29:22] Speaker 1: great point about Ricky Henderson, which is, Baseball records are
[29:27] Speaker 1: like marathon records. They are long run records. They are
[29:32] Speaker 1: records that take forever to break. They're records that people
[29:35] Speaker 1: break in their 40s, right? Like how long it took
[29:39] Speaker 1: Hank Aaron, for example. to break Babe Ruth's record. How
[29:42] Speaker 1: long it took Barry Bonds to break Hank Aaron's record.
[29:45] Speaker 1: And he may have even done.
[29:46] Speaker 2: That with a little bit of help, right? Ricky Henderson
[29:52] Speaker 2: broke the stolen base record at 32.
[29:54] Speaker 1: At 32.
[29:55] Speaker 2: At 32.
[29:59] Speaker 1: Nobody's breaking an all-time baseball record in 12 years. Nobody
[30:06] Speaker 1: is doing that, right? Mike Trout is not that guy.
[30:12] Speaker 1: But the only reason that we said, I would say
[30:15] Speaker 1: in this case, that he's not that guy is because
[30:18] Speaker 1: he's not stealing that many bases. Ricky is not hitting
[30:21] Speaker 1: with the level of power that Mike Trout is, right?
[30:26] Speaker 1: That's not happening. And by the way, Trout did this
[30:30] Speaker 1: and got out there immediately in doing this.
[30:34] Speaker 3: Immediately.
[30:35] Speaker 1: Also, one of my, the more fascinating Mike Trout things
[30:39] Speaker 1: to me is Mike Trout had a season where he
[30:42] Speaker 1: had won the MVP, but struck out 184 times, which is,
[30:46] Speaker 1: you know, kind of sort of new baseball, but still
[30:48] Speaker 1: he struck out 184 times and then like dialed that
[30:53] Speaker 1: back relatively in a way that.
[30:55] Speaker 2: I think is worth noting, except no. I look at that.
[30:58] Speaker 1: And when he does that, the games played just aren't
[31:00] Speaker 1: that high. He not all, but he's new baseball, right?
[31:04] Speaker 1: Like he's going to get on base. He's going to
[31:06] Speaker 1: draw a decent number of walks. He's going to swing really,
[31:09] Speaker 1: really hard. He has led the majors in stolen bases
[31:12] Speaker 1: in a year where he stole 49 and only got
[31:14] Speaker 1: thrown out five times. Right. That's as a rookie second
[31:19] Speaker 1: MVP MVP voting. I saw a stat about Magic Johnson
[31:23] Speaker 1: that I didn't realize, which was he was in the
[31:25] Speaker 1: top three of the MVP voting, I think, for a
[31:28] Speaker 1: stretch of like nine years in a row or something
[31:31] Speaker 1: like that.
[31:32] Speaker 2: OK, this is Mike Trout, your MVP voting.
[31:34] Speaker 1: 2-2-1-2-1-4-2-1-5. And that's it. And that's when the injuries come.
[31:44] Speaker 1: But I feel like for purposes of our list, three
[31:47] Speaker 1: MVPs and the sort of numbers that he's put up, like, look, man,
[31:50] Speaker 1: he's 33 years old and he's probably going to get
[31:54] Speaker 1: to 400 home runs this year at 33 years old.
[31:59] Speaker 2: When I was a kid, and I know that this
[32:01] Speaker 2: has changed, but when I was.
[32:03] Speaker 1: A kid, 400 home runs, as long as you weren't
[32:06] Speaker 1: Dave Kingman, meant that you were going to the Hall
[32:08] Speaker 1: of Fame. Right. The argument for the greatness of Barry
[32:12] Speaker 1: Bonds is even if you take away everything after the
[32:15] Speaker 1: points at which we generally agree that he started, you know, saying,
[32:20] Speaker 1: you know, you know, getting getting getting hitting that spike. Right.
[32:26] Speaker 1: He had 400 home runs before then. That is a
[32:29] Speaker 1: Hall of Fame career. If Mike Trout had stopped playing
[32:33] Speaker 1: baseball at the age of 30, very similar to Albert Pujols.
[32:39] Speaker 2: He'd be a hall of famer, right?
[32:41] Speaker 1: Like that's why Andrew Jones is not going to, or
[32:44] Speaker 1: has not gotten into the hall of fame because there's haters,
[32:47] Speaker 1: but also because after the age of 30, it kind
[32:50] Speaker 1: of went downhill. Now to me, the argument for Jones
[32:52] Speaker 1: is he is the capital T H E capital G
[32:57] Speaker 1: Raiders defensive center fielder, whoever lived. That is enough to
[33:00] Speaker 1: me to make the hall of fame. If you're also
[33:02] Speaker 1: going to hit for like 400 home runs, I don't
[33:04] Speaker 1: care what happened with you in your 30s. Albert, I mean,
[33:07] Speaker 1: Andrew Jones is not as good as Mike Trout. He
[33:10] Speaker 1: does not have the resume that I just read off
[33:12] Speaker 1: for you with Trout. But that guy, if he stops
[33:17] Speaker 1: at 30, is a Hall of Famer.
[33:19] Speaker 3: Right.
[33:19] Speaker 1: Like to me, it's a Ralph Kiner type of situation.
[33:22] Speaker 1: It is a Kirby Puckett type of situation where, OK,
[33:25] Speaker 1: this guy is just that good. Of course, the thing
[33:28] Speaker 1: with Trout, as you just brought it up, is he
[33:30] Speaker 1: just had no interest in being famous whatsoever. And it
[33:33] Speaker 1: is so wild to me, the idea that the best
[33:36] Speaker 1: baseball player of a generation, right, who is Bryce Harper
[33:41] Speaker 1: has actually kind of turned out to be the guy
[33:43] Speaker 1: that we thought Bryce Harper was going to be when
[33:45] Speaker 1: he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
[33:47] Speaker 2: And still not Mike Trout. I think so. I am
[33:54] Speaker 2: not sure, to be honest. But the idea, though, that.
[34:00] Speaker 1: He could turn out, he being Bryce Harper, could turn
[34:02] Speaker 1: out to be what we thought Bryce Harper would turn
[34:05] Speaker 1: out to be. And what it turned out to be?
[34:10] Speaker 1: Not Mike Trout. And that's literally no shame to him.
[34:16] Speaker 1: Like there's no, that's just where Trout turned out to be.
[34:21] Speaker 1: Is it the same draft you're able to check?
[34:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, I would. Mike was 25th overall in 2009. Bryce
[34:27] Speaker 3: Harper was 2010. But still, again, same generation.
[34:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, they're still right there.
[34:31] Speaker 1: Like, I remember Mike Trout broke in the same year
[34:34] Speaker 1: that Yasiel Puig got going.
[34:37] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I remember what a phenomenon.
[34:38] Speaker 1: That was when we learned the difference between the Dodgers
[34:41] Speaker 1: and the Angels, right?
[34:42] Speaker 2: Because Puig.
[34:43] Speaker 1: You know, Puig also was like crazy fun to watch, right?
[34:46] Speaker 1: But Puig was such a phenomenon. And I remember me
[34:49] Speaker 1: and Dan, you know, because.
[34:50] Speaker 2: Puig was Cuban.
[34:51] Speaker 1: So me and Lubbock would be on television and we'd
[34:53] Speaker 1: ride for Puig. And then I looked up and was like, hey,
[34:56] Speaker 1: how about we just admit that we ain't been paying
[34:58] Speaker 1: that close attention?
[35:02] Speaker 2: What'd you think about that? That's what seems to be
[35:05] Speaker 2: the case.
[35:06] Speaker 1: As far as I can tell. That we actually are
[35:09] Speaker 1: not doing our proper diligence on our jobs. Because this
[35:14] Speaker 1: is not it. By the way, somebody just sent me
[35:18] Speaker 1: a text about that Coldplay thing.
[35:21] Speaker 2: Said, damn, lost half in 30 seconds.
[35:27] Speaker 3: He did.
[35:28] Speaker 2: He did. That's half. That ride home. Well, first of all,
[35:36] Speaker 2: do you go home?
[35:37] Speaker 3: Do you go home? Do either of them go home?
[35:40] Speaker 2: Where do they think you are right now? You know
[35:45] Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Are your significant.
[35:47] Speaker 1: Others somewhere themselves? Or are they out of town? Did
[35:52] Speaker 1: you say you went on a trip? Where do they
[35:56] Speaker 1: think you are right now? Because you got to get
[36:00] Speaker 1: out ahead of this. I don't think that you can
[36:03] Speaker 1: wait for more people to call.
[36:07] Speaker 2: Sorry, my bad. You just crossed my mind. Just as
[36:11] Speaker 2: that came across. Damn.
[36:13] Speaker 1: Damn. Anyway, we are now at number 18, 17.
[36:23] Speaker 2: 17. Lamar Jackson.
[36:27] Speaker 1: Now, this is where the list starts getting interesting and
[36:30] Speaker 1: starts getting tight. Because the truth is, on one level
[36:35] Speaker 1: to me, this feels a little bit high, right? For example,
[36:40] Speaker 1: I could have put Drew Brees in here.
[36:45] Speaker 2: Drew Brees would.
[36:46] Speaker 1: Have made the age specification. Drew Brees has won a
[36:49] Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Drew Brees was never MVP or first team All-Pro.
[36:55] Speaker 1: Am I certain that Lamar Jackson is better than Drew Brees?
[36:58] Speaker 2: I don't know. That's a tricky question. And we will
[37:00] Speaker 2: have to get to the question that I.
[37:01] Speaker 1: Think we will be asking at a lot of points
[37:03] Speaker 1: on this list and that we asked even on day one,
[37:05] Speaker 1: which is, are you sure he's better than Tim Duncan?
[37:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the rest of the list is, you know,
[37:11] Speaker 3: a continuation of, is this person better than Tim Duncan?
[37:14] Speaker 1: At every point, it's just going to be like, sometimes
[37:16] Speaker 1: the question will be more compelling than others. Like, we may, like,
[37:19] Speaker 1: every time we do this list, we may have to
[37:21] Speaker 1: redo it and be like, you know what? Actually, Tim
[37:24] Speaker 1: Duncan goes here. Like, there's an argument for this. But
[37:28] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson is the.
[37:30] Speaker 2: Two-time NFL MVP who....
[37:36] Speaker 1: Is the only person I can think of in the NFL. Well, no,
[37:41] Speaker 1: maybe this happens other times.
[37:43] Speaker 2: Let me be fair.
[37:44] Speaker 1: But the only reason he's not a three-time MVP is
[37:47] Speaker 1: because the writers wanted to be nice to Josh Allen.
[37:49] Speaker 1: That is the only reasonable explanation for how it is
[37:52] Speaker 1: that Lamar Jackson could be first-team All-Pro and Josh Allen
[37:56] Speaker 1: win the MVP and they play the same position. We
[38:00] Speaker 1: all saw this as it happened. It was the participation
[38:04] Speaker 1: trophy moment type thing ever, right? Like everybody deserves to
[38:08] Speaker 1: win every now and then. Like you can't give employee
[38:11] Speaker 1: of the month to the same person every month, even
[38:13] Speaker 1: though every month is the same person doing the job.
[38:15] Speaker 2: You can't do that. That's what wound up happening.
[38:17] Speaker 1: So in my mind, I stopped and I asked myself,
[38:20] Speaker 1: if we took a guy who has now been in
[38:23] Speaker 1: the NFL for seven seasons, he's going into his eighth
[38:27] Speaker 1: season and he's won three MVPs. regardless of the fact
[38:34] Speaker 1: that he has not made it to a Super Bowl,
[38:37] Speaker 1: at that plus a Heisman Trophy and being like a
[38:40] Speaker 1: truly redefining player about what it is to be a
[38:45] Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFL, he's here. Like there's a level
[38:49] Speaker 1: that this feels to me a little bit hasty, but no,
[38:54] Speaker 1: I don't think that you're going to go through and
[38:57] Speaker 1: look at the people who are below him and certainly
[39:00] Speaker 1: say that any of them should be above him.
[39:01] Speaker 3: Especially, you know, one thing we made very clear, and
[39:04] Speaker 3: if you didn't catch the earlier version of the list,
[39:05] Speaker 3: we are putting a lot of emphasis on peak.
[39:09] Speaker 2: Peak.
[39:09] Speaker 3: Peak versus, you know, longevity. And nearly winning back-to-back MVPs
[39:15] Speaker 3: in the NFL is about as high as peak gets.
[39:18] Speaker 1: Right.
[39:18] Speaker 2: Like you can't. There is something to be.
[39:23] Speaker 1: Said for your ability to do this for a very
[39:26] Speaker 1: long time. But when you get to talking about somebody,
[39:30] Speaker 1: like way down the line, grandkids or whatever, you're not
[39:33] Speaker 1: gonna be like.
[39:34] Speaker 2: Oh, we play for a long time. Like that's that's
[39:37] Speaker 2: not that's not going to be what.
[39:39] Speaker 1: You impart when you are explaining what was so impressive.
[39:43] Speaker 1: Even when you get to a point and be like, man,
[39:45] Speaker 1: he did it for a long time. That's not the
[39:48] Speaker 1: part that's going to light you up. Like when we
[39:49] Speaker 1: get to the Tom Brady part, that's going to be
[39:51] Speaker 1: interesting to me. because he was just so coldly effective
[39:54] Speaker 1: and efficient, but it was nothing that just made you,
[39:57] Speaker 1: he just, he ain't do nothing to set your hair
[39:59] Speaker 1: on fire. You just in the end had to look
[40:01] Speaker 1: at it and be like, okay, he's that dude for
[40:04] Speaker 1: getting the job done. Lamar has largely gotten this job
[40:08] Speaker 1: done and done this with varying levels of talent. Like
[40:10] Speaker 1: you can't say he's out there for Dolo now at
[40:12] Speaker 1: this point, but there were points at which it was
[40:14] Speaker 1: looking like, like another, you're the best player on the
[40:16] Speaker 1: high school team. And we put the ball in your
[40:18] Speaker 1: hand and you go do whatever. And I also think,
[40:23] Speaker 1: that a part of this in terms of perceiving him,
[40:27] Speaker 1: and I got to think in my own mind about
[40:30] Speaker 1: what role this plays is, it's somewhat difficult to separate
[40:34] Speaker 1: anything that happens for him in the NFL from how
[40:38] Speaker 1: he wound up getting into the NFL, right? And the
[40:43] Speaker 1: fight of the, I think, and I could be wrong here,
[40:48] Speaker 1: but I think that Lamar Jackson is, may ultimately end
[40:52] Speaker 1: up with his historical legacy being, he might be the
[40:56] Speaker 1: last black quarterback of his ilk to truly have to
[41:01] Speaker 1: fight to play quarterback, right? Where they had to not
[41:06] Speaker 1: run the 40 yard dash, not do any receiving drills
[41:10] Speaker 1: and all of these things. And I do have this
[41:14] Speaker 1: hot tape. Not all of that is as racist as
[41:17] Speaker 1: it seems. right some of it is obviously but if
[41:22] Speaker 1: you don't think that he's a great quarterback i think
[41:25] Speaker 1: most of us do think you'd at least give.
[41:27] Speaker 2: Him a chance at doing some of the other stuff
[41:30] Speaker 2: right gotta get the tires on it i think.
[41:33] Speaker 3: The wild thing about lamar is you almost see this
[41:35] Speaker 3: level of doubt twice obviously it's two different things right
[41:38] Speaker 3: but the whole league comes in and doubts him he
[41:41] Speaker 3: ends up being the last pick of the first round
[41:42] Speaker 3: including the ravens passing on him yes early in that
[41:45] Speaker 3: draft And then you see, you know, fast forward a
[41:49] Speaker 3: few years later, he's a restricted free agent. Any team
[41:53] Speaker 3: in the league can get him for matching his contract
[41:55] Speaker 3: and two first-run picks. Obviously, you have a collision element,
[41:59] Speaker 3: but no one was willing to break ranks and go
[42:01] Speaker 3: get him. Right. And still doubting his, you know, with
[42:05] Speaker 3: his injury risk and everything else, and then he comes
[42:07] Speaker 3: out afterwards, wins an MVP, and nearly wins a second one.
[42:10] Speaker 2: And now, by the way, you raise a point.
[42:12] Speaker 1: Maybe I was out here being a little bit too optimistic.
[42:18] Speaker 1: Perhaps there is still an opportunity for them to doubt
[42:21] Speaker 1: the black quarterback.
[42:22] Speaker 2: My fault, Ryan. I have forgotten that they just did
[42:27] Speaker 2: that a couple.
[42:28] Speaker 3: Of years ago.
[42:30] Speaker 2: That happened.
[42:30] Speaker 1: But you would hope at the very least that that
[42:33] Speaker 1: could be what the legacy winds up being for him, though,
[42:37] Speaker 1: because there's not that much that you could ask for.
[42:40] Speaker 1: And he is a very good pocket passer. I think
[42:42] Speaker 1: it is very easy for people to try to dismiss that.
[42:45] Speaker 1: I think it is especially easy if you don't know
[42:47] Speaker 1: anything about college football. And what the offense that Cam
[42:51] Speaker 1: Newton was running at Auburn is not the Bobby Petrino offense.
[42:54] Speaker 1: That is not an that was not an offense built
[42:57] Speaker 1: around having a running quarterback. They had a quarterback who
[43:00] Speaker 1: could run, but he was still out there running the
[43:02] Speaker 1: Bobby Petrino offense. Now, of course, there's more left for
[43:06] Speaker 1: Lamar to do.
[43:07] Speaker 2: Right. There are he is going to make it to
[43:10] Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame.
[43:11] Speaker 3: Right.
[43:11] Speaker 1: I don't think he is a Hall of Famer necessarily
[43:14] Speaker 1: right now at this moment. But two time MVP, three
[43:18] Speaker 1: time first team All-Pro quarterback. I feel pretty confident that
[43:21] Speaker 1: he is going to go to the Hall of Fame.
[43:26] Speaker 1: Hall of Fame quarterbacks who did not make it to
[43:29] Speaker 1: the Super Bowl in the Super Bowl era. That's a
[43:32] Speaker 1: really short list. I got Dan Fouts and Warren Moon.
[43:36] Speaker 1: I don't have anybody else that I can think of
[43:39] Speaker 1: on that list, both of whom ran kind of supercharged
[43:43] Speaker 1: offenses for the day. And one could argue that the
[43:47] Speaker 1: schematics of the offense helped them get to the Hall
[43:49] Speaker 1: of Fame, but also help keep them out. They don't
[43:51] Speaker 1: blow that lead to Buffalo if they're not running for
[43:54] Speaker 1: our receivers every play, for example. But are they scoring
[43:58] Speaker 1: 35 points against Buffalo if they don't do those things? Right.
[44:01] Speaker 2: I say all that to say.
[44:03] Speaker 1: If you have played seven years, and I think that
[44:06] Speaker 1: puts Lamar at 27 or 28, still crazy young, and
[44:10] Speaker 1: you have the accolades that he has, then yeah, you're
[44:15] Speaker 1: that guy. And I don't think that we talk about
[44:18] Speaker 1: him really in those historic turns because we're still asking
[44:21] Speaker 1: the questions about the Ravens team's success on his watch. However,
[44:27] Speaker 1: he's earned the praise that he is getting from this list. Okay,
[44:33] Speaker 1: and now we have number 16. Wow, that.
[44:40] Speaker 2: Was a terrible drumming.
[44:42] Speaker 1: Let me try it again.
[44:44] Speaker 2: There we go. Aaron Rodgers. Now, again, are we sure
[44:54] Speaker 2: he's better than Tim Duncan? I don't know.
[44:57] Speaker 1: I also realize I may have meant to put a
[44:59] Speaker 1: different Aaron here, but we'll talk about that next show.
[45:02] Speaker 2: There's room to change. But anyway.
[45:06] Speaker 1: There are times where Aaron Rodgers has appeared to be
[45:09] Speaker 1: the best quarterback I.
[45:09] Speaker 2: Have ever seen.
[45:11] Speaker 1: There has never been a time that I have thought
[45:13] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson was the best quarterback I have ever seen.
[45:15] Speaker 1: There's never been a time that I thought that Cam
[45:17] Speaker 1: Newton was the best quarterback that I have ever seen
[45:20] Speaker 1: just from watching him.
[45:21] Speaker 2: I will be honest with you.
[45:23] Speaker 1: There has never been a time that just from watching
[45:25] Speaker 1: him that I have thought Tom Brady was the best
[45:28] Speaker 1: quarterback I've ever seen. Like with Tom Brady, you got
[45:30] Speaker 1: to think about it and then you get to the conclusion.
[45:32] Speaker 1: But it's not like, wow, look at that. Aaron Rodgers
[45:36] Speaker 1: throwing a football has so much.
[45:38] Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
[45:40] Speaker 1: I can't.
[45:41] Speaker 3: Throws only at the time you thought only Aaron Rodgers
[45:44] Speaker 3: could make.
[45:46] Speaker 1: This sounds like a crazy thing maybe to say and
[45:49] Speaker 1: maybe not the most important thing to bring up. But
[45:51] Speaker 1: I do think it speaks to a degree of testament
[45:53] Speaker 1: to like what you get from the Aaron Rodgers world.
[45:55] Speaker 1: He is the best Hail Mary thrower I have ever seen.
[45:58] Speaker 1: He is the only person that I have seen throw
[45:59] Speaker 1: multiple Hail Marys that I believe he was truly throwing
[46:02] Speaker 1: it to a spot. And the spot was directly behind
[46:07] Speaker 1: all the defensive players that are going to try to
[46:09] Speaker 1: jump up and get the ball. And there will be
[46:10] Speaker 1: some guy just there to catch it. Like he's that dude.
[46:15] Speaker 1: He's also way more athletic than I think people really
[46:18] Speaker 1: gave him credit for.
[46:20] Speaker 2: Like the concern that I.
[46:21] Speaker 1: Had about where he would be after the Achilles is
[46:24] Speaker 1: It's because if Aaron Rodgers isn't really that athletic, then
[46:29] Speaker 1: you're not getting the same thing, right?
[46:30] Speaker 2: Athletic is not just simply about the ability to move.
[46:33] Speaker 1: It's about the ability to move and throw it while
[46:35] Speaker 1: you're moving, go in these crazy directions and everything else.
[46:38] Speaker 2: Now, yes, he has become....
[46:42] Speaker 3: Weirdo.
[46:43] Speaker 2: What a weirdo.
[46:43] Speaker 3: He's someone who's having a tough week, I can imagine.
[46:47] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[46:48] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[46:49] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[46:50] Speaker 2: I mean, I imagine he might be canvassing.
[46:52] Speaker 1: He might be in the streets over to Epstein. Boy,
[46:55] Speaker 1: he might be out here sending letters. He might quit
[46:57] Speaker 1: his job to dedicate himself like.
[46:59] Speaker 2: It wasn't like my more.
[47:01] Speaker 1: He might, you know, another honorable mention, others receiving votes,
[47:04] Speaker 1: a person on this list.
[47:06] Speaker 3: Someone dedicated to a cause, their cause.
[47:09] Speaker 2: Got to get it done. Somebody's got to make it happen.
[47:13] Speaker 1: But I do think that ultimately Aaron Rodgers is going
[47:18] Speaker 1: to be.
[47:19] Speaker 2: Thought of for the Super Bowls. Not the Super Bowls
[47:21] Speaker 2: that he didn't win, but the Super Bowls he didn't
[47:22] Speaker 2: get to. Right.
[47:24] Speaker 1: Now, how much of that is his fault becomes an
[47:27] Speaker 1: interesting question. They've come close, like they had that year
[47:30] Speaker 1: against Seattle, where they want to say it's 2014, where
[47:33] Speaker 1: Seattle marched down the field at the end of the
[47:34] Speaker 1: game and got it done.
[47:36] Speaker 3: They went 16-0 for most of that game, and that
[47:40] Speaker 3: was one of the wildest comebacks. That was a Mike
[47:44] Speaker 3: McCarthy coaching disaster class.
[47:46] Speaker 2: Yes, in the toughest building in the league to play in. Right.
[47:51] Speaker 3: At that point.
[47:51] Speaker 1: Right. So like they had the year they went 15
[47:53] Speaker 1: and one. And then Eli Manning had that horseshoe up
[47:57] Speaker 1: his keister for a month again. Right.
[48:00] Speaker 2: And then he got there. So we're going to think
[48:02] Speaker 2: a lot, I believe.
[48:04] Speaker 1: Oh, my favorite factoid with Eric Rodgers is his real
[48:08] Speaker 1: nemesis is Colin Kaepernick.
[48:10] Speaker 2: Colin Kaepernick did it to that boy three times, twice
[48:13] Speaker 2: in the playoffs.
[48:14] Speaker 1: Just don't destroy it in Lambeau in the playoffs the
[48:18] Speaker 1: one year. and then two of them at Candlestick Park,
[48:23] Speaker 1: one to start the season in 2013, and then in
[48:27] Speaker 1: 2012 in the playoffs, he had something like 180 yards
[48:30] Speaker 1: before contact.
[48:31] Speaker 2: It was nuts the way that wound up going.
[48:34] Speaker 1: But I think because of all the other stuff with
[48:38] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers, yes, we think about the fact that Dan
[48:41] Speaker 1: Marino did not win a Super Bowl, but I think
[48:44] Speaker 1: that we primarily think of the greatness of Dan Marino as,
[48:48] Speaker 1: And then be like, well, damn, they did not win.
[48:49] Speaker 2: A Super Bowl.
[48:51] Speaker 1: I think because of the other stuff about Rodgers, it
[48:54] Speaker 1: is likely that we will think of it more in
[48:55] Speaker 1: the context again of why you didn't get it done.
[49:01] Speaker 1: And I think that will obscure what I think is
[49:05] Speaker 1: truly like his greatness. Like if you were and this
[49:09] Speaker 1: is where lists like this get to be tricky. If
[49:12] Speaker 1: you were to ask me who I thought was a better, okay,
[49:16] Speaker 1: so I'll dial this out. he says about eli manning
[49:18] Speaker 1: versus tony romo i don't think there's any question that
[49:21] Speaker 1: tony romo was a better quarterback than eli manning but
[49:24] Speaker 1: if i need to go win a playoff game there's
[49:25] Speaker 1: also pretty much no question which one of them i'm
[49:28] Speaker 1: going to take and it's not tony romo correct and
[49:30] Speaker 1: those are competing thoughts that aren't necessarily contradictory I think
[49:35] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers is a better player, a better athlete, da-da-da,
[49:38] Speaker 1: than Tom Brady.
[49:39] Speaker 2: But one of them got seven Super Bowl reigns, and
[49:41] Speaker 2: one of them got one.
[49:42] Speaker 1: Right.
[49:42] Speaker 3: And for the beginning of that career, we were able
[49:45] Speaker 3: to tie a lot of that to Mike McCarthy. But
[49:47] Speaker 3: Matt Spergis there, he wins two MVPs, and we still
[49:50] Speaker 3: see him in the same struggles with Aaron Rodgers in
[49:52] Speaker 3: the playoffs. So, you know, it's hard to remove.
[49:58] Speaker 1: But we're talking peak, and I'm going to pull up
[50:01] Speaker 1: some of these numbers here. So you can understand when
[50:04] Speaker 1: we say peak with Aaron Rodgers, and I say we're
[50:07] Speaker 1: really talking about like 2010 through about 2015, 2016 maybe,
[50:14] Speaker 1: the touchdown interceptions numbers, because the blessing and curse of
[50:16] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers is the low interception numbers, but also because
[50:20] Speaker 1: of a problematic level of risk aversion.
[50:23] Speaker 3: Didn't want to be Brett Favre.
[50:24] Speaker 1: Didn't want to make the mistake, and too much did
[50:27] Speaker 1: not want to make the mistake, but dude, 2011, 45 touchdowns,
[50:28] Speaker 1: six interceptions, 2012, 39, and eight. 2013, he was hurt
[50:34] Speaker 1: for much of the year.
[50:35] Speaker 3: 2014, 38-5.
[50:35] Speaker 1: 2015, 31-8.
[50:35] Speaker 2: 2016, 40-7. 2020, 48 touchdowns, five interceptions at the age
[50:38] Speaker 2: of 37. Like, dude, this one was different. He also was,
[50:39] Speaker 2: you know, eclectic. Different.
[51:02] Speaker 1: I remember when it's different was kind of cool. Like, hey,
[51:05] Speaker 1: y'all booed the Muslims. That wasn't cool, right?
[51:08] Speaker 2: And then something happened and that boy got radicalized.
[51:10] Speaker 3: And you know, now- One of the themes we talk
[51:13] Speaker 3: about the show is the dangers of being on the
[51:16] Speaker 3: Internet too much.
[51:16] Speaker 2: Way too much. Way too much. Way too much. No supervision.
[51:19] Speaker 2: Boy needs supervision. But that is what we got.
[51:22] Speaker 1: And so that is our list through number 16. We
[51:27] Speaker 1: have 15 left for you.
[51:28] Speaker 2: We got more context coming for you. All of that stuff.
