[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you

[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:20] Speaker 1: a hater. And it is that time of week where
[0:22] Speaker 1: we have a guest join us, coming to us live
[0:25] Speaker 1: from Yahoo Sports, covering the NFL. Nate Tice, what's going on?
[0:29] Speaker 2: Not too much. Happy to be here. Happy to talk
[0:32] Speaker 2: a little bit of week one. No more hypotheticals. No
[0:35] Speaker 2: more preseason tape. No more, this is what this guy
[0:38] Speaker 2: did in college.
[0:40] Speaker 1: All that stuff that over here, we refuse to do.
[0:44] Speaker 1: You people over here who live in this full-on football world,
[0:47] Speaker 1: the thing about covering basketball, you basically take the summer off.
[0:51] Speaker 1: Y'all get no time off. People can't get enough of
[0:54] Speaker 1: y'all talking about football, whatever way it possibly comes.
[0:57] Speaker 2: It's a whole month of list shows, and those shows
[1:00] Speaker 2: become big. Those shows get you yelled at. and then
[1:03] Speaker 2: takes it's like top 10 offenses i just want to
[1:05] Speaker 2: talk about some offenses nope get yelled at about that
[1:08] Speaker 2: and then you see the basketball people and they're like
[1:10] Speaker 2: it's an international tournament these are fun players aren't they
[1:15] Speaker 2: you know yeah i i know we even when the
[1:17] Speaker 2: two months are supposed to be off turn into you
[1:20] Speaker 2: know superlative season everyone debating and yelling but yeah you're
[1:24] Speaker 2: right preseason tape gets extrapolated too that becomes a whole
[1:27] Speaker 2: thing Fancy people planting flags saying this guy's all pro already.
[1:34] Speaker 2: I try to take little things, but you go out
[1:37] Speaker 2: there and people are just proclamations everywhere.
[1:40] Speaker 1: I refuse to watch any of it. I refuse to engage.
[1:43] Speaker 1: I just know this is not going to be a win.
[1:45] Speaker 2: No Hall of Fame game for Bo.
[1:46] Speaker 1: Hell no, man. I'm going to throw something out here
[1:48] Speaker 1: right fast for the people who watch this on YouTube,
[1:51] Speaker 1: but for those of you who listen on audio, perhaps
[1:53] Speaker 1: you will find this to be a humorous and entertaining thing. So,
[1:57] Speaker 1: Last couple episodes, you shot them on the same day.
[1:59] Speaker 1: I decided that, you know, it was like, oh, I
[2:01] Speaker 1: got to throw on a shirt before I go do
[2:02] Speaker 1: the show. And I was like, let me put on
[2:04] Speaker 1: with some of this right time merchandise that we had.
[2:08] Speaker 1: And so I put on a right time T-shirt. And
[2:11] Speaker 1: today I am wearing my right time hoodie that you
[2:14] Speaker 1: can get. And it's not really cold outside. It was
[2:17] Speaker 1: a little brisk, but it was easier for me to
[2:19] Speaker 1: grab this today. And part of why I'm grabbing this
[2:22] Speaker 1: is just so you guys on YouTube know. Yes, I
[2:25] Speaker 1: saw your comments about my shirt being wrinkled. Number one,
[2:28] Speaker 1: you were really right. I didn't quite realize how wrinkled
[2:32] Speaker 1: it was. Perhaps I could have done something about it.
[2:35] Speaker 1: But there's something about ironing to be in my house.
[2:40] Speaker 1: You just don't really add up for me. But number two,
[2:42] Speaker 1: at the same time, you hating motherfuckers. How about you
[2:45] Speaker 1: just look at that shirt and imagine what it would
[2:47] Speaker 1: look like with no wrinkles and buy one. Y'all got
[2:49] Speaker 1: all these jokes. You got a purchase, an order confirmation?
[2:53] Speaker 1: You got that? How about that? You know what I'm saying?
[2:57] Speaker 1: But anyway, today I'm wearing the right time hoodie. You
[3:00] Speaker 1: can get that. High lattice. Check it out. You know
[3:03] Speaker 1: what I'm saying? But anyway, we'll get back to this football.
[3:06] Speaker 1: Monday Night Football was interesting. The J.J. McCarthy era football.
[3:09] Speaker 1: began in Minnesota and Caleb Williams on the other side. Now,
[3:13] Speaker 1: this is interesting because the world would have you believe
[3:17] Speaker 1: beginning last year that Caleb Williams is going into the
[3:20] Speaker 1: best situation that a rookie quarterback had ever gone into
[3:22] Speaker 1: because they had receivers and they had a running back situation.
[3:25] Speaker 1: And holy smokes, I move into this season and people
[3:29] Speaker 1: are basically telling me that JJ McCarthy is walking into
[3:33] Speaker 1: what is kind of the best situation a rookie quarterback
[3:35] Speaker 1: has ever had, even though he's not a rookie, but
[3:38] Speaker 1: he didn't play any games last year. First question for
[3:41] Speaker 1: me is what you thought of McCarthy in that game?
[3:45] Speaker 1: Because I felt like I was looking at an upper
[3:48] Speaker 1: echelon of what those, the guys running that system want,
[3:53] Speaker 1: which is a guy to do what you said. Just,
[3:55] Speaker 1: it's just, if you do what I say, everything will
[3:57] Speaker 1: be okay. He seemed to be operating according to that paradigm.
[4:01] Speaker 1: That's exactly what it was.
[4:02] Speaker 2: It's the, that offensive systems training wheels, you know, just
[4:06] Speaker 2: the way to bumpers, you know, like a bowling alley.
[4:10] Speaker 2: It's just really just to keep them on the rails
[4:12] Speaker 2: throughout the game. And you see, I mean, the, Game script,
[4:16] Speaker 2: or at least a game plan for the Vikings and
[4:19] Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell was first, second down run, third down. Hopefully
[4:22] Speaker 2: we have a third and five and throw the ball.
[4:24] Speaker 2: Like it was very basic. There's a ton of play actions.
[4:27] Speaker 2: There's a ton of stuff on the move. But where
[4:29] Speaker 2: the appeal of McCarthy was, at least like in theory,
[4:32] Speaker 2: when they drafted him was, oh, he's a pretty good athlete.
[4:35] Speaker 2: So even if he's like Kirk Cousins as a thrower,
[4:37] Speaker 2: you know, we can maybe do some run stuff. We
[4:40] Speaker 2: can do some zone reads. And we saw the rushing touchdown.
[4:43] Speaker 2: So like that was the appeal of J.J. McCarthy. But
[4:45] Speaker 2: that first half was rough. I mean, you could tell
[4:48] Speaker 2: it was moving fast for him. The Bears defense is
[4:50] Speaker 2: pretty good. But I thought you mentioned the situation stuff
[4:54] Speaker 2: and you mentioned all the pass catchers and everything. And
[4:56] Speaker 2: I thought last year, that's why I thought I was
[4:58] Speaker 2: going crazy when people were saying that about the Bears was,
[5:00] Speaker 2: are we still we're still OK with this offensive line
[5:04] Speaker 2: like that? That was OK. But then on the flip side,
[5:06] Speaker 2: I actually had been saying this summer, I was like, well, Yeah,
[5:10] Speaker 2: McCarthy is dropped into one of the best situations possible
[5:13] Speaker 2: outside the left tackle because Derrissaw's hurt right now. But
[5:16] Speaker 2: they added three new offensive linemen who all looked pretty
[5:18] Speaker 2: good last night. Ryan Kelly, Will Fries, and Donovan Jackson
[5:23] Speaker 2: from Ohio State in the first round who had some
[5:26] Speaker 2: good moments last night. Kevin O'Connell still calling plays. So, yeah,
[5:30] Speaker 2: it is a great situation. I thought the best part
[5:33] Speaker 2: about the Vikings game last night was the run game.
[5:35] Speaker 2: And that's also to help out the young quarterback. hey,
[5:38] Speaker 2: you don't have to throw it every time. Hey, we're
[5:39] Speaker 2: going to get you second and fives. Hey, we're going
[5:41] Speaker 2: to get you third and threes because the running game
[5:43] Speaker 2: could be so good. So I did think that one
[5:46] Speaker 2: of those good situations looked like a good situation last night,
[5:49] Speaker 2: at least from the last couple of years.
[5:51] Speaker 1: I feel like you left out the best part of
[5:53] Speaker 1: that biking situation, which is the dude playing football with
[5:57] Speaker 1: a million dollars worth of jewelry around his neck. Like,
[6:01] Speaker 1: I ain't going to lie. I would not roll the
[6:04] Speaker 1: dice on playing the down of NFL football, right? But
[6:08] Speaker 1: somebody out there saying to himself, I can get down
[6:11] Speaker 1: there and get that chain and get off the field
[6:13] Speaker 1: before anybody sees what time it is. Like, you got
[6:17] Speaker 1: to have actual security if you're going to do that.
[6:19] Speaker 1: Only the quarterback need to be wearing a chain like
[6:21] Speaker 1: that because the quarterback has actual security. Like, he has
[6:23] Speaker 1: five security guards in front of him. Justin Jefferson, I
[6:27] Speaker 1: could not believe that. Like, you out here doing something
[6:30] Speaker 1: with that chain on.
[6:32] Speaker 2: Also, like, every time they show them lined up, like,
[6:34] Speaker 2: you know, when they do the close camera view. that
[6:37] Speaker 2: thing was just glistening yes it was just i i'm
[6:40] Speaker 2: sure the camera guy's like oh dang it zoom out
[6:41] Speaker 2: zoom out too bright too bright too bright no too
[6:44] Speaker 2: shiny i don't know how guys do that like prime
[6:46] Speaker 2: did that back in the 90s and i always thought
[6:48] Speaker 2: that was insane and that was just it was never
[6:50] Speaker 2: a chain no no no it was just the one
[6:52] Speaker 2: gold chain right right you just do the one gold
[6:54] Speaker 2: chain right i i always thought that and that was
[6:57] Speaker 2: insane back then like he was one of the first
[6:58] Speaker 2: guys to do it then more guys did it you
[7:00] Speaker 2: know throughout the aughts and stuff but now we're our
[7:03] Speaker 2: I mean, well, Lamar's got the grill mouthpiece like these guys.
[7:07] Speaker 2: I mean, and that stuff's real. This is a big
[7:11] Speaker 2: difference between Dante Culpepper walking up with a giant diamond
[7:14] Speaker 2: pepper to the game and then taking it off before
[7:17] Speaker 2: the game, as opposed to what these guys are doing.
[7:19] Speaker 2: They're walking out and wearing it.
[7:20] Speaker 1: Dude, I have to say that as the pandemic hit,
[7:24] Speaker 1: I believed that what we were going to hit was
[7:26] Speaker 1: a time that gave people like a bit of reevaluation
[7:29] Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And I thought that we were
[7:31] Speaker 1: going to see a rejection of a certain level of
[7:34] Speaker 1: materialism in society as we realized what the stakes were,
[7:37] Speaker 1: what the world presented to us. But people were saving
[7:40] Speaker 1: so much money staying at the crib. And then they
[7:43] Speaker 1: sent out them checks that actually it turned on the
[7:47] Speaker 1: afterburners for a level of conspicuous consumption. Like all these
[7:52] Speaker 1: dudes got robbable chains on, right? Like the kind of
[7:55] Speaker 1: chain that you can't just walk around I guess the
[8:00] Speaker 1: 2021 World Series when the Braves had all them dudes
[8:02] Speaker 1: with them chains was the sign of where this was
[8:04] Speaker 1: going to go. Had no idea. But Justin Jefferson, and
[8:07] Speaker 1: I'm trying my best to say Justin. I also saw
[8:09] Speaker 1: y'all in the YouTube comments. He had a brother named Jordan.
[8:12] Speaker 1: I'm at that age where I call you your brother's
[8:15] Speaker 1: name like I'm a parent. Anyway, Justin Jefferson, he's... Let
[8:20] Speaker 1: me ask you this about him. This is a serious
[8:22] Speaker 1: question because I don't quite know it. He seems to
[8:24] Speaker 1: just be really good at being really good, but I
[8:26] Speaker 1: don't know myself exactly what it is because he's probably
[8:28] Speaker 1: the best receiver in the league right now, right? What
[8:31] Speaker 1: is the thing he does?
[8:33] Speaker 2: Uh body control like that's the thing is that he
[8:36] Speaker 2: when he breaks in and out of stuff i think
[8:38] Speaker 2: he's the best receiver in the game because he can
[8:39] Speaker 2: legit do anything he can go deep he can run
[8:42] Speaker 2: intermediate run over the middle take stuff short and get
[8:44] Speaker 2: yak he can block like that was actually one of
[8:47] Speaker 2: his things coming out of osu is that he was
[8:49] Speaker 2: a good blocker um he can line up in the
[8:51] Speaker 2: slot it's just one of those things that now he
[8:53] Speaker 2: is he's not just a jack of all trades he's
[8:56] Speaker 2: the king of all trades. Like he is a very
[8:59] Speaker 2: good to elite at every part. His hand eye coordination
[9:02] Speaker 2: is excellent. Um, his, you know, how his, how his
[9:06] Speaker 2: body moves, like how he moves out of breaks is
[9:08] Speaker 2: just so unique. Like he's able to turn with his
[9:11] Speaker 2: legs facing one way, his upper body facing the other
[9:13] Speaker 2: way and make a catch, which is, it's just this
[9:16] Speaker 2: rare body control that he has. But, He's just insane,
[9:20] Speaker 2: and I know he's wearing that chain because he doesn't
[9:21] Speaker 2: have to worry about playing Aqib Tlaib anymore.
[9:25] Speaker 1: I think Aqib Tlaib would let him wear his chain.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Tlaib's problem was not the chain. It was the man
[9:34] Speaker 1: wearing the chain.
[9:37] Speaker 2: I know my guy, Michael Crabtree.
[9:39] Speaker 1: I spent two years with him in Oakland. I just
[9:41] Speaker 1: didn't feel like he should be wearing that chain. And
[9:45] Speaker 1: so he didn't even try to keep his chain. He
[9:47] Speaker 1: just took the chain off of his neck. And this
[9:51] Speaker 1: reminds me, for those of you who don't know, right now,
[9:55] Speaker 1: Aqib Tlaib is working on Underdog, the people that do
[10:00] Speaker 1: Gil's Arena. They've got a football arena. And among others,
[10:04] Speaker 1: that show has Aqib Tlaib and Skip Bayless. And I
[10:07] Speaker 1: know Jay Gruden is supposed to be on the show.
[10:10] Speaker 1: And there's a lot going on there with that pairing.
[10:14] Speaker 1: A lot going on. Yes.
[10:17] Speaker 2: Yes, because... The Jay and John Gruden, because they're both
[10:21] Speaker 2: huge personalities. John is, they're definitely the big brother, little brother,
[10:26] Speaker 2: you know, personalities too. Jay is a shitster. He will
[10:30] Speaker 2: say whatever. Whatever comes to his mind. He tweets whatever
[10:35] Speaker 2: comes to his mind. He doesn't care about like going out.
[10:38] Speaker 2: Him and RG3 were going at it.
[10:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, no, Jay Gruden, he's given up on getting another job. Yeah, yeah.
[10:44] Speaker 1: That is the impression that I get from him.
[10:45] Speaker 2: Which I actually like.
[10:48] Speaker 1: Right, like whatever the jobs are that might be available
[10:50] Speaker 1: to him. Yeah. He has decided, like a guy like
[10:52] Speaker 1: Rex Ryan, for example. Rex Ryan could get a job
[10:55] Speaker 1: in the NFL.
[10:56] Speaker 2: He's playing footsie.
[10:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he doesn't want to be a defensive coordinator,
[10:59] Speaker 1: and I don't think anybody's going to put him in
[11:00] Speaker 1: charge anymore. Jay Gruden, I think, has just decided, nope,
[11:03] Speaker 1: the jobs they give, I don't know what he does
[11:04] Speaker 1: for money or how much money he has, but he'd
[11:06] Speaker 1: just be out here saying any damn thing. He means it.
[11:10] Speaker 2: And he does.
[11:10] Speaker 3: Oh, I know.
[11:11] Speaker 2: That's why, again, I appreciate it. That's why if you
[11:13] Speaker 2: ever want to know so many players and former coaches' analysis,
[11:16] Speaker 2: other than that a lot of them don't pay attention
[11:18] Speaker 2: to the game as much as they should, is a
[11:20] Speaker 2: lot of them are just, well, that's my buddy. Well,
[11:23] Speaker 2: that's my, you know, oh, I played with him in college. Oh,
[11:26] Speaker 2: that's my coach that I worked with. That's why we
[11:28] Speaker 2: vacationed together in Destin, Florida, where all the coaches have
[11:31] Speaker 2: their vacation homes. Like, you know, they have those kind
[11:35] Speaker 2: of connections still. It's actually kind of freeing for me.
[11:37] Speaker 2: As soon as my dad got out of the league,
[11:39] Speaker 2: I was like.
[11:39] Speaker 3: All right.
[11:39] Speaker 2: All right. You know, these motherfuckers didn't give me a job.
[11:43] Speaker 2: So get ready.
[11:45] Speaker 1: Right.
[11:46] Speaker 2: You know, so that is freeing. And Jay's just always
[11:49] Speaker 2: been like that. He's the loose cannon. And even as
[11:53] Speaker 2: a coach, he had that. Remember they came up with
[11:55] Speaker 2: the picture of him, you know, smoking a J outside
[11:57] Speaker 2: the bar. You know, so it's like, you know, stuff.
[12:00] Speaker 2: And he just owned it. Like, he doesn't even care
[12:02] Speaker 2: about it. I don't know. I appreciate that kind of analysis.
[12:04] Speaker 2: If it's not just Toll always just going, you know.
[12:07] Speaker 2: going into the doldrums and, you know, crap talking a
[12:10] Speaker 2: little bit to everybody, at least just like a little
[12:12] Speaker 2: bit of like a little bit of sides are pretty fun.
[12:14] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[12:14] Speaker 1: I will say no industry is quite as protective of,
[12:17] Speaker 1: I know that guy and Twitter has made it the
[12:18] Speaker 1: worst because of the flimsy ties, but ties nonetheless in
[12:22] Speaker 1: my business. Oh, Yeah, like.
[12:26] Speaker 2: We all snitch tags.
[12:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, we all kind of know each other, right? Yes.
[12:30] Speaker 1: But we don't really know each other, so we do
[12:32] Speaker 1: not hold each other to proper account. When we didn't
[12:35] Speaker 1: all kind of know each other, then we was, and
[12:38] Speaker 1: I'm guilty of this too. Oh, yeah. You know? Oh, yeah.
[12:42] Speaker 2: I'm pretty safe on mine or on my show where
[12:44] Speaker 2: I was like, he's not going to listen to this show.
[12:46] Speaker 2: All right.
[12:48] Speaker 1: Ain't nothing safe for me, big dog. I got, there's
[12:50] Speaker 1: the people making industry out here, hawking my shit just,
[12:53] Speaker 1: just to see if something go wrong, but I'll bring
[12:55] Speaker 1: it back to the football. I'll bring it back to
[12:56] Speaker 1: the football, that same game. Um, Caleb Williams. Um, I read,
[13:01] Speaker 1: you know, I've told people before, I think Tyler Dunn's
[13:04] Speaker 1: newsletter is really, really good. Like shockingly thorough to be
[13:07] Speaker 1: a newsletter. It feels more like a magazine than anything else. Um,
[13:11] Speaker 1: And Buddy, they brought the hammer down on the Caleb
[13:15] Speaker 1: Williams era. On the Bears in general, though I think
[13:18] Speaker 1: Ryan Poles, the general manager, is probably one that catches
[13:21] Speaker 1: it the worst. It did feel like a lot of
[13:23] Speaker 1: scorned people were offering up their information. But the particulars
[13:30] Speaker 1: on Caleb Williams as a figure in the facility and
[13:34] Speaker 1: in the locker room, I don't think we can leave
[13:36] Speaker 1: alone for now. What I did find to be interesting, though,
[13:39] Speaker 1: was their... Their expression that, A, he didn't seem to
[13:43] Speaker 1: be one who listened too much or took too kindly
[13:45] Speaker 1: to coaching. But number two, what seemed to be very
[13:47] Speaker 1: clear was he was dropping back and didn't know what
[13:51] Speaker 1: it was that he was looking at. Like, I did
[13:53] Speaker 1: not realize he took 68 sacks last season. And I
[13:56] Speaker 1: am a firm believer of the Aaron Schatz theory. Sacks
[13:59] Speaker 1: are a quarterback statistic. You took 68 stats. And you
[14:04] Speaker 1: go look at just about any quarterback and go look
[14:05] Speaker 1: at their stats every year. The numbers are going to
[14:08] Speaker 1: be clustered. They're going to be the same, right? The lines,
[14:11] Speaker 1: those lines aren't always bad. No, some guys just take
[14:14] Speaker 1: a long time to throw. He takes a long time
[14:16] Speaker 1: to throw. I heard people say they thought that he
[14:19] Speaker 1: looked very good in the first half and then he
[14:21] Speaker 1: looked worse in the second half. I did not think
[14:23] Speaker 1: he looked very good in the first half. I thought
[14:25] Speaker 1: it looked like he was dropping back and checking down
[14:27] Speaker 1: a lot and not realizing some of the things that
[14:29] Speaker 1: may have been available down the field. And then in
[14:32] Speaker 1: the second half, Brian Flores decided to be like, all right,
[14:35] Speaker 1: enough fucking around. and decided to get into his head.
[14:38] Speaker 1: But I don't, I don't know how much cause there
[14:40] Speaker 1: is for optimism with where the Caleb Williams experience is
[14:45] Speaker 1: going to go. And I'm also not sure if they're
[14:46] Speaker 1: coaching to what he does best, but I have a
[14:50] Speaker 1: hard time believing Ben Johnson with his big brain would
[14:53] Speaker 1: be so locked into what he's doing to not try
[14:55] Speaker 1: to make some level of adaptation to the quarterback that
[14:58] Speaker 1: he has. Yeah.
[14:59] Speaker 2: And that's what I've been curious to see. This is
[15:01] Speaker 2: where I know I joked about the preseason stuff that
[15:03] Speaker 2: I was trying to like extrapolate from all right what
[15:06] Speaker 2: did i see in the preseason all right now what
[15:08] Speaker 2: i see in week one and ben johnson i do
[15:11] Speaker 2: i do have trust in like i do think this
[15:13] Speaker 2: guy is very smart i do think this guy's very
[15:15] Speaker 2: thorough and i do think he's the right coach for
[15:17] Speaker 2: caleb because some of those guys have personalities like a
[15:20] Speaker 2: guy like caleb and again this is i've never met
[15:22] Speaker 2: caleb williams i've never met ben johnson um but just
[15:25] Speaker 2: context of stuff or just reading of the context is
[15:28] Speaker 2: some of these guys that have big personalities and maybe
[15:31] Speaker 2: reportedly think they know it all and give coaches hard times.
[15:35] Speaker 2: They're kind of like a toddler testing boundaries going like,
[15:37] Speaker 2: can I get away with this? Can I get away
[15:39] Speaker 2: with this? And sometimes those, those guys, they don't think
[15:43] Speaker 2: they like hard coaching, but they need hard coaching. They
[15:46] Speaker 2: need a big personality to kind of get after them
[15:49] Speaker 2: and hold them accountable. Not let them go away on
[15:52] Speaker 2: any BS and everything. And so what I've been trying
[15:55] Speaker 2: to look at is Ben Johnson seems to be trying
[15:58] Speaker 2: to find plays that work with Caleb. Caleb is shorter.
[16:00] Speaker 2: He's sub six, two. And if you just look at
[16:02] Speaker 2: the history of the game, and I know everyone just
[16:04] Speaker 2: always gets mad at me when I bring this up.
[16:06] Speaker 2: Short guys don't throw it over the middle. The only
[16:08] Speaker 2: one that did is Drew Brees. And actually, the one
[16:11] Speaker 2: that does it the best right now is Bryce Young,
[16:13] Speaker 2: who does not look good overall. But he can at
[16:17] Speaker 2: least throw over the middle. That is just the weakness
[16:19] Speaker 2: of being short. It's not batted balls. It's that. But
[16:22] Speaker 2: when you run what I think Ben Johnson wants to do,
[16:25] Speaker 2: a lot of runs, play action off the runs, down
[16:28] Speaker 2: the field stuff. Play action works best with stuff over
[16:31] Speaker 2: the middle. Cause that's what you're affecting with a run
[16:33] Speaker 2: play is the linebackers coming up, the safety's coming up.
[16:36] Speaker 2: So then you attack behind them. It's just physics. But
[16:39] Speaker 2: if you're not attacking over the middle, all right, what
[16:43] Speaker 2: are we, what are we trying to fake at? You know,
[16:45] Speaker 2: what are we trying to affect here? So Ben Johnson
[16:48] Speaker 2: to me seemed like he was doing more outbreaking routes.
[16:50] Speaker 2: Cause then, okay, kill has got a hose and was
[16:53] Speaker 2: thrown to the outside. Outside throws are a little bit
[16:56] Speaker 2: more space, less mistakes happen. If I miss, I can
[16:59] Speaker 2: just miss towards the sideline. Throwing over the middle is harder.
[17:02] Speaker 2: If I make a mistake, tip ball pick. If I
[17:05] Speaker 2: make a mistake, it's just at a guy's feet. A
[17:07] Speaker 2: guy can get batted down by a linebacker. All these
[17:09] Speaker 2: things can happen. There's more risk, but there's way more reward.
[17:13] Speaker 2: But the thing with Caleb is he's missing those throws.
[17:16] Speaker 2: And that's what's scary to me. Because I am a guy,
[17:20] Speaker 2: I'm a little different to you. I have a little
[17:21] Speaker 2: more optimism with Caleb, but I thought it would just
[17:22] Speaker 2: be a little bit more than what we saw in
[17:24] Speaker 2: this game. Because the opening drive, yeah, there's one or
[17:27] Speaker 2: two moments. But then, like you said, there's some scramble
[17:29] Speaker 2: moments or check down moments. And that's what I can't
[17:31] Speaker 2: wait to watch when I rewatch this game later this week,
[17:34] Speaker 2: like film-wise, is that what was the back end looking like?
[17:37] Speaker 2: Is it just because you weren't anticipating and that's why
[17:40] Speaker 2: it was closed and that's why you're checking down? Or
[17:42] Speaker 2: are those guys truly covered? I'm going to guess that
[17:45] Speaker 2: he wasn't anticipating because just the rhythm of the plays.
[17:48] Speaker 2: I think Roman Doomsday is a good player. I think
[17:50] Speaker 2: DJ Moore is a good player. I trust, again, what
[17:52] Speaker 2: Ben Johnson's designing. So, yeah, there's a couple times I'm
[17:55] Speaker 2: sure he made the right decision. It's good that he's
[17:57] Speaker 2: going through the check down and good that he's doing
[17:59] Speaker 2: those things. But, man, you got to– it's three seconds
[18:02] Speaker 2: or less. Like that's how quickly you have to make
[18:04] Speaker 2: a decision as a quarterback. And it just seems to
[18:05] Speaker 2: me it's three and a half for him, four for him.
[18:09] Speaker 2: Great that you can do all this creation stuff, but, like, man,
[18:11] Speaker 2: he still has to get better from the pocket. So
[18:14] Speaker 2: that's just the– I got to rewatch this game. But
[18:17] Speaker 2: the first half, that first drive opening script, yeah. But
[18:20] Speaker 2: when the defense adjusted, they started sending blitzes. Like if
[18:23] Speaker 2: you put that on tape that you can't handle blitzes,
[18:26] Speaker 2: Hold on to your hat because here comes the heat
[18:29] Speaker 2: every single week. And that was like the discouraging part
[18:33] Speaker 2: about it, I thought.
[18:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think for me, I get the feeling. I
[18:39] Speaker 1: felt this way about Baker Mayfield, though they are very
[18:42] Speaker 1: different quarterbacks. But Baker Mayfield, to a lesser degree, but
[18:47] Speaker 1: he was college athletic.
[18:49] Speaker 2: You know what I mean? He still thinks he's athletic.
[18:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he had athleticism that it took to make
[18:55] Speaker 1: plays in college.
[18:56] Speaker 2: That's a great point.
[18:57] Speaker 1: And I think that Williams had the athleticism to make.
[18:59] Speaker 1: And if you're going to play off schedule or more accurately,
[19:03] Speaker 1: I don't think the issue here is playing off schedule.
[19:05] Speaker 1: The issue is playing late, right? Like if you're going
[19:08] Speaker 1: to be running late, you got to really have this
[19:11] Speaker 1: added dimension to be able to pull that off and
[19:13] Speaker 1: still be good. Case in point, Cam Newton, a touch late.
[19:17] Speaker 1: But with the arm that he had and the body
[19:20] Speaker 1: that he had and everything else, he was still throwing
[19:22] Speaker 1: dudes open, right? Still making it happen at that point.
[19:26] Speaker 1: I feel like the athleticism that Williams had, I mean,
[19:29] Speaker 1: I'll never forget that first game, the game that he
[19:31] Speaker 1: took over Spencer Rattler against Texas, and he was jumping
[19:34] Speaker 1: off the screen with that athletic ability. I think Deshaun Watson,
[19:37] Speaker 1: at his best, is a great example of this, of
[19:39] Speaker 1: a guy that was college athletic. Now you're going to
[19:43] Speaker 1: have to play a bit more on time. to get
[19:45] Speaker 1: this done. And I don't know, you know quarterbacking way
[19:48] Speaker 1: better than I ever would. Is that something? that like,
[19:50] Speaker 1: like how often somebody becomes that?
[19:54] Speaker 2: They got to be in there. It's got to be
[19:56] Speaker 2: ingrained because they've won. Every quarterback wins differently. And that's
[20:00] Speaker 2: what I know. I'm not just explaining this to you,
[20:02] Speaker 2: but just, and I think that's the misconception is that
[20:06] Speaker 2: even like, you know, this brings you back to the
[20:08] Speaker 2: Jalen hurts conversation. where it's just that everyone, well, oh,
[20:11] Speaker 2: is he top 10 quarterback, top five quarterback? And the
[20:13] Speaker 2: argument is there's others that can do what he does well,
[20:16] Speaker 2: but then other weakness, everybody has a weakness. All these
[20:18] Speaker 2: guys have a weakness to it and they have a
[20:21] Speaker 2: way to win. And the fact that Caleb so far
[20:24] Speaker 2: in what, five years I've watched him has been winning
[20:27] Speaker 2: the exact same way. And then he comes into his
[20:28] Speaker 2: second year as the pros trying to win the same way.
[20:31] Speaker 2: That is a little scary. They can get better though.
[20:34] Speaker 2: Like I do think you can get better, but the
[20:36] Speaker 2: thing is he's always going to have this in the
[20:38] Speaker 2: back of his head. This is my, you know, the
[20:41] Speaker 2: I call it the freak conundrum, not conundrum, but like
[20:43] Speaker 2: the freak threshold. Like if you're going to win that way,
[20:46] Speaker 2: you have to be big and or and or you
[20:48] Speaker 2: have to be fast and or you have to have
[20:50] Speaker 2: an arm because that's where traits come into play. That's
[20:55] Speaker 2: where size and arm strength. And like you said, Cam
[20:58] Speaker 2: Newton would be a second late and have that elongated motion.
[21:01] Speaker 2: Doesn't matter. He had a hose.
[21:03] Speaker 3: Boom.
[21:03] Speaker 1: Hit it right there.
[21:05] Speaker 2: Every guy I always bring up when I'm on the show,
[21:06] Speaker 2: Dante Culpepper. OK, he was very accurate. But he can
[21:10] Speaker 2: be a little late sometimes. Guess what? He's 260 running
[21:13] Speaker 2: a 4-6. So it didn't matter. He could shed a
[21:15] Speaker 2: sack and create a play off that. That's where traits
[21:18] Speaker 2: come in. This is the Shadur Sanders argument as well.
[21:21] Speaker 2: Why I was low on Shadur, why we saw him
[21:24] Speaker 2: not take a hold of any reps is because he
[21:27] Speaker 2: wasn't very big, didn't have a very strong arm, and
[21:28] Speaker 2: wasn't very athletic. That gives you room for error if
[21:31] Speaker 2: you do make a mental mistake, if you are mentally
[21:34] Speaker 2: a little bit slow. That's what those traits do. Purdy
[21:38] Speaker 2: can play like Purdy because he has Shanahan, who's letting
[21:41] Speaker 2: him get rid of the ball right away. Same with
[21:43] Speaker 2: guys like Goff. Those guys have to play on time.
[21:45] Speaker 2: So I do think Caleb will speed it up, but
[21:48] Speaker 2: it is a little worrisome that this is still just
[21:50] Speaker 2: in his moment, or still in his kind of head
[21:52] Speaker 2: to play this way if the first read isn't perfectly open.
[21:56] Speaker 2: And then he wants to progress. There's times where I
[21:58] Speaker 2: see him moving and progressing, but he's not shortcutting anything.
[22:03] Speaker 2: And that's the next step to NFL quarterback play. Yes,
[22:08] Speaker 2: technically plays go one to two to three to four
[22:10] Speaker 2: to five sometimes. But really, I shortcut it to the
[22:14] Speaker 2: three because I know it's cover two and I have
[22:17] Speaker 2: to get to the backside dig. Or it's cover three
[22:19] Speaker 2: and I know they're doing this, this, and that, so
[22:21] Speaker 2: I have to get to this route. That's what the
[22:24] Speaker 2: advanced guys do. Watch freaking Matthew Stafford play this weekend
[22:27] Speaker 2: and watch him shortcut everything. And last thing, though, tying
[22:31] Speaker 2: in with Baker, Caleb also throws the ball way too hard.
[22:34] Speaker 2: He's got it. He's got to tempo that stuff down.
[22:37] Speaker 1: Oh, he's that guy. He's Sean Dustin. Oh, my God.
[22:40] Speaker 2: And that's what Baker does, too. They throw everything one
[22:42] Speaker 2: speed as hard as they freaking can. Penix is like
[22:45] Speaker 2: this as well. Everything as hard as they can every time.
[22:48] Speaker 2: And got to have a little layering. Got to have
[22:50] Speaker 2: a little bit of touch on these throws. You got
[22:52] Speaker 2: to be able to throw a changeup or a curveball
[22:54] Speaker 2: just to help yourself out.
[22:55] Speaker 1: So it's funny you put Penix in there because I
[22:57] Speaker 1: was just about to say, ah, short guy behavior. Kyler
[23:00] Speaker 1: Murray on the same list. He's pumping. He's firing. He's
[23:05] Speaker 1: throwing some pepper every time.
[23:07] Speaker 2: Baseball player. That's it, too. Doesn't throw in the middle either.
[23:11] Speaker 2: That's actually who, when we, in the prospects, I like
[23:14] Speaker 2: him as a prospect. I was a Drake May number
[23:16] Speaker 2: one guy, which everyone made fun of at the time.
[23:18] Speaker 2: But now everyone's gone. Like, oh, Drake. I had Drake
[23:20] Speaker 2: May at number one. Yes. B.S. B.S. I kept notes
[23:24] Speaker 2: on it. I have a list of this, of everyone
[23:26] Speaker 2: that got after me. was when Caleb was coming out.
[23:29] Speaker 2: I was kind of saying what his, with their high-end comparisons,
[23:33] Speaker 2: with their middle comparisons, with their low-end ones, my middle
[23:36] Speaker 2: comparison was like, it's kind of like a big Kyler.
[23:39] Speaker 2: That was kind of like what I think he most
[23:40] Speaker 2: likely ends up looking like. And I'm watching him like, Yeah,
[23:45] Speaker 2: I'm seeing a lot of Big Kyler, but he's also
[23:47] Speaker 2: not throwing the deep ball like Kyler does.
[23:49] Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was about to say.
[23:50] Speaker 2: That's also concerning.
[23:52] Speaker 1: Here's the problem. Big Kyler is like John Elway. Big
[23:57] Speaker 1: Kyler is like the greatest quarterback that you've ever had.
[23:59] Speaker 1: But I still say what makes Kyler Murray not good,
[24:02] Speaker 1: or that's not fair, but not what we want him
[24:05] Speaker 1: to be, doesn't feel like size problems. Nope, nope. All
[24:09] Speaker 1: the stuff. He is so fast. His arm is so strong.
[24:12] Speaker 1: All of that. Right. He just did just something there.
[24:15] Speaker 2: He's second late on stuff. Yep. Yep. I'm a Kyler sympathizer. I, I,
[24:22] Speaker 2: because I, he wants to be a real boy. Like
[24:25] Speaker 2: he wants to be a real quarterback. And it's just like,
[24:28] Speaker 2: He's just– I mean, this weekend's game was frustrating. If
[24:31] Speaker 2: you're down on Kyler, this would be a good one
[24:33] Speaker 2: to rewatch back. But it was one of those where
[24:35] Speaker 2: it's just like he can't just always just have a
[24:37] Speaker 2: consistent game where he does it all perfect. He'll have
[24:39] Speaker 2: a drive or a half where it's like there's a
[24:41] Speaker 2: quarterback right there, and then he takes a sack in
[24:44] Speaker 2: the red zone or takes a sack to put on
[24:46] Speaker 2: third down to knock you out of field goal range,
[24:47] Speaker 2: and you're like– Come on, Kyler.
[24:50] Speaker 1: I need you, buddy. Yeah, well, I take this right
[24:52] Speaker 1: fast before we go to break. And I don't know
[24:55] Speaker 1: if I can do this without us just going on
[24:57] Speaker 1: and on about it. But I'll try to do this.
[24:59] Speaker 1: If there is a guy who has the physical traits
[25:02] Speaker 1: to buy being just a little bit late, like he's
[25:05] Speaker 1: often late. It happens very it just doesn't matter because
[25:09] Speaker 1: sending extra rushers don't matter because they bounce off of
[25:11] Speaker 1: him like there's a force field. That would be number
[25:13] Speaker 1: 17 in Buffalo. He can buy all the time in
[25:17] Speaker 1: the world. Watching through the years, you're not bringing him
[25:20] Speaker 1: down with number 34.
[25:27] Speaker 4: Right right right yeah 34 it better be 58 yeah
[25:31] Speaker 4: number 22 72 yeah and not one of these guys
[25:35] Speaker 4: that wants to be cool and we're a little man
[25:36] Speaker 4: number being a big man that's not who it's gonna
[25:39] Speaker 4: take to bring him down number 73 is gonna have
[25:42] Speaker 4: to come in there and get.
[25:43] Speaker 2: Something done insane isn't he i can't believe it like
[25:48] Speaker 2: where do you have them like meant like i mean
[25:50] Speaker 2: we probably have you have a little bit before me
[25:52] Speaker 2: but like we have overlap a lot of our football
[25:54] Speaker 2: timelines like yeah.
[25:57] Speaker 1: It's first of all, it's the biggest bet that anybody
[26:00] Speaker 1: has ever cashed in in the history of the NFL.
[26:02] Speaker 2: Yes. Period.
[26:03] Speaker 1: Like this is a look. It took time. They wrote
[26:07] Speaker 1: it out. Like he wound up in a great situation
[26:09] Speaker 1: for him. And look, people get mad at me when
[26:11] Speaker 1: I talk about this, but I think it's undeniably true.
[26:13] Speaker 1: When you look at the coverage, it really helps when
[26:15] Speaker 1: everybody wants it for you, whether it was local, whether
[26:18] Speaker 1: it was everywhere else, teammates afforded him the patience to,
[26:22] Speaker 1: for the first two or two and three years to get,
[26:25] Speaker 1: you know, to get to where it was. Cause he stunk.
[26:28] Speaker 1: Like we were not wrong when he said he stunk. Nah,
[26:31] Speaker 1: it's never been like this before. And then on top
[26:34] Speaker 1: of it, everybody likes him.
[26:36] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[26:37] Speaker 2: Loves him. That was my, so I, I liked him
[26:40] Speaker 2: as a prospect, but I was like, this is like
[26:42] Speaker 2: one out of a hundred. This works, but like, Hey,
[26:44] Speaker 2: he seems like a good kid. Like all this stuff
[26:47] Speaker 2: that first his rookie year, he scored a touchdown. And
[26:50] Speaker 2: the entire sideline and the team went and celebrated with
[26:53] Speaker 2: him going nuts. And I was just like, huh, that's interesting.
[26:58] Speaker 2: I remember where I was sitting. I think I had
[27:01] Speaker 2: just moved here to Vegas. And I remember just being like,
[27:03] Speaker 2: that's interesting. They really like him. Huh, there might be
[27:06] Speaker 2: something to this. And then I think it was 2019
[27:08] Speaker 2: comes in. Still spraying stuff. But like, I had a
[27:11] Speaker 2: couple moments. And then now we were watching him. This
[27:14] Speaker 2: dude's changing protections like Peyton Manning in his prime.
[27:17] Speaker 1: And then, and then.
[27:18] Speaker 2: And then throwing a guy off of him and launching
[27:21] Speaker 2: a throw 45 yards. And it's just like, I mean,
[27:24] Speaker 2: he's maxed out on everything. 99 overall, 99 overall.
[27:28] Speaker 1: But he'll still panic every now and then, right? Like
[27:31] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson looked excellent in that game, by the way.
[27:33] Speaker 1: Excellent in that game. You got a whole, and Josh
[27:36] Speaker 1: is still giving you a chance to do a game.
[27:38] Speaker 1: Stafford's a guy like that. My Stafford comp that makes
[27:42] Speaker 1: people mad, but it's the truth. Carson Palmer was that guy.
[27:46] Speaker 1: If you take advantage of the chances they'll give you
[27:48] Speaker 1: to win the game, you might got a chance, right?
[27:51] Speaker 4: Yes.
[27:51] Speaker 1: But otherwise, man, it's about to be some hell to
[27:54] Speaker 1: pay out here.
[27:56] Speaker 2: Or it could go south very quickly if that high
[27:59] Speaker 2: wire act hits.
[28:01] Speaker 1: But I saw Stafford made a throw across the field,
[28:04] Speaker 1: and I'm not a Stafford guy. But what he can do.
[28:08] Speaker 2: Watch him on Sunday.
[28:09] Speaker 1: Woo! Good God, he looked good.
[28:12] Speaker 2: That dude doesn't even move, and he... He's throwing sidearm
[28:16] Speaker 2: throws 40 yards on a rope. Well, yeah, Sever's one
[28:20] Speaker 2: of those guys, like all those quarterback guys just kind
[28:22] Speaker 2: of like laugh at because it's just like, well, yeah,
[28:25] Speaker 2: I can't do that. Like, but he can. He threw
[28:28] Speaker 2: a no look, no look seam ball 30 yards, like
[28:32] Speaker 2: 28 yards down the field on a rope as he
[28:33] Speaker 2: was getting hit. But as he's getting hit, like he's backwards.
[28:37] Speaker 2: He's kind of like, you can't see my feet right now,
[28:39] Speaker 2: but they're kind of parallel to the line of scrimmage.
[28:42] Speaker 2: And he's flat footed, getting hit. no looking the linebacker
[28:46] Speaker 2: and then throwing a seam ball at 25 yards. If
[28:48] Speaker 2: a guy did any one of those things, that's like
[28:50] Speaker 2: highlight worthy. And he did like three of the hardest things. Like, yeah, he,
[28:54] Speaker 2: his high end stuff. But the thing is, he also
[28:56] Speaker 2: gets hit once in the next play. It looks like
[28:58] Speaker 2: he came hobbling across.
[29:00] Speaker 1: He's another one. Once again, he, his patience game was
[29:03] Speaker 1: different because he was good enough to be a starter
[29:05] Speaker 1: and he got that patience. He got the patience where
[29:07] Speaker 1: he's going to maybe go into the hall of fame
[29:09] Speaker 1: with all of three pro bowl appearances, like the comp
[29:13] Speaker 1: Carson Palmer. I don't think he's a Hall of Famer.
[29:15] Speaker 1: The Super Bowl is probably going to take it there.
[29:17] Speaker 1: But I don't know anybody that has consistently gotten better
[29:21] Speaker 1: for 15 years. Yep.
[29:23] Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah.
[29:24] Speaker 1: Because this is year 17 for him.
[29:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, because he.
[29:29] Speaker 1: Entered at 20. 09. In 09. This is year 17
[29:33] Speaker 1: for him. And as much as people put the he
[29:35] Speaker 1: played for Detroit thing, yeah, damn. Got stuck throwing to
[29:39] Speaker 1: Calvin Johnson. um like it wasn't it wasn't yeah yeah

[31:15] Speaker 1: We are back with Nate Tice. You know, Russell Wilson
[31:19] Speaker 1: had a bad game against the commandos because Daybold could
[31:23] Speaker 1: not say definitively that he was going to start the
[31:25] Speaker 1: next game. And then he came back out and after
[31:27] Speaker 1: watching the film, decided that he is going to start
[31:30] Speaker 1: in week two, which I take to be a, we
[31:33] Speaker 1: watched the film and Russell Wilson was bad, but so
[31:36] Speaker 1: was everybody else. And we're not going to sacrifice anything
[31:39] Speaker 1: this quarterback that we say we're high on, um, in
[31:42] Speaker 1: order to just throw him on the field early. Cause look,
[31:46] Speaker 1: I don't think they have any good quarterbacks. I don't
[31:48] Speaker 1: think they have anything to gain for putting Jackson dart
[31:50] Speaker 1: out there, except to tell the veterans we're not giving
[31:53] Speaker 1: up on the season, right? Like that to me is
[31:55] Speaker 1: the only thing that you have to gain from doing that,
[31:56] Speaker 1: which I think is a value. It matters. I'm not
[31:59] Speaker 1: the one that has to manage these guys on a
[32:01] Speaker 1: day-to-day basis, but you played in college with Russell Wilson.
[32:04] Speaker 1: I covered Russell Wilson when he was at his first college, um,
[32:08] Speaker 1: Party's over, guys.
[32:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, especially with Noah O'Line. It's just... Him without an
[32:14] Speaker 2: offensive line is never going to be pretty.
[32:16] Speaker 1: Well, tell me this. Best case scenario on Russell Wilson
[32:18] Speaker 1: is kind of what you're hoping for Caleb Williams, right? Yeah.
[32:21] Speaker 1: Although Caleb Williams is bigger, they play in similar ways,
[32:25] Speaker 1: but also Russell Wilson was a different caliber of athlete.
[32:29] Speaker 2: Russell was just so much more creative. Russ scrambled to
[32:33] Speaker 2: launch a 40-yard deep ball. You know what I mean?
[32:36] Speaker 2: Caleb was... scrambling to like either you know run a
[32:40] Speaker 2: little bit but also just throw like more line drive
[32:42] Speaker 2: underneath stuff so how they even like what they get
[32:44] Speaker 2: to is different like that's the thing about Russ you
[32:47] Speaker 2: could take those sacks because the very next play he
[32:50] Speaker 2: might be launching a thing 40 yards down the field
[32:53] Speaker 2: and that you can win taking sacks like I'll say
[32:55] Speaker 2: this again but you have to generate explosives and that's
[32:59] Speaker 2: the Caleb conundrum he's a single Caleb right now is
[33:02] Speaker 2: playing like a singles and doubles hitter that takes a
[33:04] Speaker 2: bunch of strikeouts That's not– that math doesn't– I don't
[33:07] Speaker 2: want Ichiro taking 200 strikeouts.
[33:09] Speaker 3: Right.
[33:09] Speaker 2: You know, like that math doesn't work out for quarterbacks.
[33:13] Speaker 2: But like Russ, prime Russ at least, or Wisconsin Russ,
[33:16] Speaker 2: it was– we had a great run game that kept
[33:17] Speaker 2: us on schedule. But then it was like– I mean,
[33:20] Speaker 2: our 2011 Wisconsin offense was legitimately one of the best
[33:23] Speaker 2: offenses in like recent history.
[33:25] Speaker 1: Well, what you're talking about is should have won the
[33:27] Speaker 1: Heisman Russ except for people who don't remember that season.
[33:32] Speaker 1: Two insane Hail Marys are the only reason Russell Wilson
[33:36] Speaker 1: did not win that Heisman. And if those don't happen,
[33:39] Speaker 1: by the way, Russell wins that Heisman and not Robert Griffin,
[33:45] Speaker 1: which would make your current life a lot less annoying.
[33:50] Speaker 2: Hey, you got another Fox gig.
[33:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me tell you, Robert Griffin doesn't
[33:55] Speaker 1: win that Heisman. A whole lot of things about life
[33:57] Speaker 1: are much different.
[33:59] Speaker 2: Russ didn't even get into the Heisman ceremony. Monte Ball did.
[34:03] Speaker 1: That's right.
[34:04] Speaker 2: I forgot about that.
[34:05] Speaker 1: But no, they had, well, Kirk Cousins threw the crazy
[34:08] Speaker 1: one in Michigan State and Braxton Miller. through the everybody
[34:12] Speaker 1: cries because Ohio State finally did something good that year.
[34:14] Speaker 1: It was literally two from the 50-yard line Hail Marys
[34:18] Speaker 1: in a year where Russell Wilson had something like 37
[34:19] Speaker 1: touchdowns and four interceptions, and they went to the Rose
[34:22] Speaker 1: Bowl and all of that. He was that guy. I
[34:25] Speaker 1: remember I was doing Around the Horn the day that
[34:27] Speaker 1: it was announced that he was going to Wisconsin, and
[34:29] Speaker 1: it was funny because I went to the studio to
[34:31] Speaker 1: do Around the Horn and who was there but Russell Wilson.
[34:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember the interview.
[34:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, because he did one of the shows right beforehand.
[34:38] Speaker 1: And so I remember I'm on the call, and most
[34:41] Speaker 1: of those guys didn't follow college football on a granular level,
[34:44] Speaker 1: certainly not at a level at which they knew what
[34:45] Speaker 1: was going on at NC State. And I remember the
[34:49] Speaker 1: question was asked on the call. It was like, can
[34:51] Speaker 1: they win a national championship? I said, if what you're
[34:54] Speaker 1: telling me is Wisconsin needs a quarterback to win a
[34:56] Speaker 1: national championship, the answer is get ready. Like, yes, they
[35:01] Speaker 1: got the guy.
[35:03] Speaker 2: He came in. And how Bielma recruited him. It was
[35:06] Speaker 2: one of these things, too. As a quarterback there, he
[35:08] Speaker 2: took two throws, and I was like, yeah, I get it, guys.
[35:12] Speaker 2: But he came in, and Bielma was genius how he
[35:15] Speaker 2: recruited him. The only players he met was the starting
[35:18] Speaker 2: offensive line. And so he was like, and Russ is Russ.
[35:23] Speaker 2: Russ wants to be the president. And so in his head,
[35:26] Speaker 2: he's like, all right, what gets me to the NFL?
[35:29] Speaker 2: What are my biggest questions? He was very aware about this. Well,
[35:32] Speaker 2: people say I can't throw over an NFL offensive line
[35:34] Speaker 2: because I'm so short. All right, let's go. Let's go
[35:37] Speaker 2: behind these these big dudes and I'll prove I'll prove
[35:40] Speaker 2: them all wrong. But that's what Bealmo's genius. He was like, hey,
[35:43] Speaker 2: you're going to go here. Look at these guys. These
[35:44] Speaker 2: guys are all going to the NFL.
[35:45] Speaker 1: You can prove it here.
[35:47] Speaker 2: Like, watch out. And oh, my God, that that offense
[35:51] Speaker 2: was so sick because even in the back, we were
[35:53] Speaker 2: able to redshirt Melvin Gordon because we didn't even need him.
[35:56] Speaker 2: Wisconsin was able to redshirt Melvin Gordon. That's how talented
[35:59] Speaker 2: we were that year. But yeah, James White, Monty Ball.
[36:03] Speaker 2: Monty tied the touchdown record. And James White came in.
[36:07] Speaker 2: He was great.
[36:08] Speaker 1: Should have been Super Bowl MVP.
[36:10] Speaker 2: Should have been Super Bowl MVP. At least he got
[36:12] Speaker 2: the truck, I think, right? Didn't Tom Brady give him
[36:14] Speaker 2: the truck? I should have James. He's doing some media stuff, too.
[36:16] Speaker 2: We have the same agent. I should have James. He's
[36:18] Speaker 2: a great dude. But no, we actually had two NFL
[36:21] Speaker 2: receivers that year. Nick Toon. Al Toon's son and Jared Aberderis.
[36:27] Speaker 2: But it was just one of the– like that Michigan State–
[36:29] Speaker 2: I can't believe you remember that. The Kirk Cousins Hail Mary. Bullshit,
[36:32] Speaker 2: by the way. So he scores. They say– they ruled
[36:36] Speaker 2: it incomplete. Or they ruled it that he didn't score
[36:38] Speaker 2: at first. And then they reviewed it. And the angle
[36:41] Speaker 2: that they used was like on the line of scrimmage.
[36:44] Speaker 2: You know, like camera on the line of scrimmage to
[36:46] Speaker 2: see if he passed– broke the plane. It was off-angled.
[36:51] Speaker 2: Like it was at the one-yard line and tilted. It
[36:54] Speaker 2: wasn't down the line. And to this day, I'm like, no,
[36:58] Speaker 2: that's inconclusive.
[36:59] Speaker 1: Nope.
[37:00] Speaker 2: Has to be 100% without a doubt. I remember it.
[37:03] Speaker 2: And then the Braxton Miller. Oh, my God. I can't
[37:05] Speaker 2: believe you're bringing it. Now these are.
[37:06] Speaker 1: Just wounds, man.
[37:07] Speaker 2: These are just.
[37:08] Speaker 1: What are my favorite?
[37:09] Speaker 2: We won at Bama that year. We were like, hey,
[37:12] Speaker 2: we got this this year. If JJ Watt came back
[37:14] Speaker 2: that year, we were definitely rolling.
[37:15] Speaker 1: But yeah.
[37:16] Speaker 2: And then we had one of the greatest games ever,
[37:17] Speaker 2: that Big Ten championship game against Michigan State.
[37:20] Speaker 1: One of my favorite sub-jobbers of content is people mad
[37:24] Speaker 1: at things that happened 15 years ago like they just
[37:27] Speaker 1: happened this morning.
[37:28] Speaker 2: You detailed it. You mentioned the names, and that's actually
[37:31] Speaker 2: what I heard. And as the backup quarterback, I'm right
[37:34] Speaker 2: there at the line of scrimmage, so I'm watching that
[37:36] Speaker 2: throw go off and going, they're not going to catch that, right?
[37:40] Speaker 2: They're not going to catch that, right? They're not going
[37:42] Speaker 2: to catch that, right? We just lost. Michigan State Stadium sucks.
[37:47] Speaker 2: It's got the bathroom. They have like three showers for
[37:50] Speaker 2: 100 people. It's tight. They have two yards of sideline
[37:55] Speaker 2: from you to the fans. Oh, my God.
[37:57] Speaker 1: Sorry.
[37:58] Speaker 2: You're just really.
[38:00] Speaker 1: So I'll make the nice transition for you.
[38:03] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[38:03] Speaker 1: Are you buying into Jackson Dart because I have a
[38:06] Speaker 1: pretty safe rule? Drafted in the 20s? Nope. Not for
[38:10] Speaker 1: a quarterback. No way.
[38:12] Speaker 2: Don't, I'm not very high on him. I think he's,
[38:15] Speaker 2: I think he's okay. I kind of has some Heineke
[38:18] Speaker 2: to him. I got kind of a Heineke plus kind
[38:21] Speaker 2: of a runaround guy. I thought he would talk about
[38:24] Speaker 2: taking a second to, to process, you know, like he
[38:27] Speaker 2: takes a second to throw. He's got, he's got tools.
[38:29] Speaker 2: That was one thing. He's a good runner. Well, he's
[38:32] Speaker 2: pretty athletic. He's got pretty good arm. His deep ball
[38:34] Speaker 2: dies on him a little bit, but it was one
[38:36] Speaker 2: of those where everyone's comparing him to Josh Allen and stuff.
[38:39] Speaker 2: I'm like, if he was like Josh Allen, he's going
[38:40] Speaker 2: top 10. Like, you know, Josh Allen's Josh Allen. Like,
[38:44] Speaker 2: the tools were a step down. And Josh Allen was
[38:47] Speaker 2: able to win early on because his tools were top
[38:49] Speaker 2: of the line. We just laughed about it, 99 overall
[38:51] Speaker 2: and everything, even before he figured everything out. No, Dart
[38:55] Speaker 2: to me, he's tough. He's going to make some cool plays.
[38:58] Speaker 2: But the thing is, everything's just always a count slow.
[39:02] Speaker 2: And on plays that he's familiar with, with a guy
[39:05] Speaker 2: that has a lot of reps. So that was my worst.
[39:07] Speaker 2: I had a third-round grade on him. Like, you know, okay,
[39:10] Speaker 2: take a shot. Make him sit. I'm scared of him
[39:12] Speaker 2: playing behind that offensive line, too, because he takes a
[39:14] Speaker 2: lot of sacks.
[39:16] Speaker 1: Hey, man. These guys need to get something before Malik
[39:19] Speaker 1: Neighbors completely loses it. I've never seen a player this
[39:26] Speaker 1: young feel this way before. Yeah. Yeah.
[39:30] Speaker 2: Yeah. It's been a while. It's been a while. Maybe Keyshawn.
[39:33] Speaker 1: Keyshawn just put that book out and said that, but
[39:37] Speaker 1: we did not have the examples of Keyshawn.
[39:40] Speaker 2: Just, oh my God, what is going on? And he's
[39:45] Speaker 2: like dancing with Jaden Daniels before the game. They're like
[39:47] Speaker 2: having fun, like high-fiving. And then the game starts, he
[39:51] Speaker 2: looks at his quarterback and he's just like this. I
[39:55] Speaker 2: didn't see that either.
[39:57] Speaker 1: Look, so he had to deal with like Daniel Jones
[39:59] Speaker 1: and everybody else. And what's that boy? Tommy DeVito. He
[40:02] Speaker 1: was on the team, right? He got all of that.
[40:05] Speaker 1: At some point, New York City, look, New York City,
[40:09] Speaker 1: it seems to be enjoying the idea of Jameis Winston
[40:12] Speaker 1: right now. At some point, he's going to get on
[40:15] Speaker 1: the field. And I just can't wait to see Brian
[40:17] Speaker 1: Dable's head explode when that happens.
[40:21] Speaker 2: With that offensive line. Did you see Dable's, their first
[40:26] Speaker 2: red zone play or first play at the goal line?
[40:27] Speaker 2: What they did?
[40:28] Speaker 1: No, I did not.
[40:30] Speaker 2: They ran like a play action. They had an offensive
[40:31] Speaker 2: lineman running like a legit route into the back of
[40:34] Speaker 2: the end zone. But it was so funny because usually
[40:37] Speaker 2: teams do that. Like they set it up for weeks. hey,
[40:40] Speaker 2: this is our big– hey, we got extra offensive linemen.
[40:42] Speaker 2: We have extra offensive linemen. We're going to run the ball,
[40:44] Speaker 2: run the ball. And they did it on the first
[40:46] Speaker 2: goal line play of the year. So you could tell
[40:48] Speaker 2: like Dayball was really trying to like you know, a
[40:51] Speaker 2: little pizzazz to start the season and Washington covers it
[40:54] Speaker 2: up like a glove. Like, I mean, they just, I mean,
[40:56] Speaker 2: just are all over it. So it just looks like
[40:58] Speaker 2: the stupidest play. There's an offensive lineman running a 10
[41:00] Speaker 2: yard route, trying to juke a DB and he doesn't
[41:02] Speaker 2: get it, but that's what that's.
[41:06] Speaker 1: I did see that play at the goal line. I
[41:07] Speaker 1: was at Nick's house and I was like, Hey man,
[41:09] Speaker 1: that looked like he was supposed to run a route.
[41:11] Speaker 1: He did. It was in the bag. Okay. I thought
[41:13] Speaker 1: I saw him go.
[41:14] Speaker 2: Whew.
[41:17] Speaker 1: With your shoulder and then take it back outside. I'm like, no,
[41:20] Speaker 1: he's just supposed to be there and be fat.
[41:22] Speaker 2: No, he was trying to run a fricking route. First,
[41:27] Speaker 2: first goal I'd play in the year.
[41:28] Speaker 1: It killed me.
[41:29] Speaker 2: Cause that's the thing. My thing with Dable is that
[41:32] Speaker 2: he has media friends and he reads everything. And it
[41:36] Speaker 2: just seems like he does a lot of things performatively.
[41:39] Speaker 2: That's how my read on him. Everything's kind of performative
[41:41] Speaker 2: with him. Like he, Oh, you know, I love my quarterback. Like,
[41:44] Speaker 2: and he's like getting all giddy about him and saying
[41:46] Speaker 2: all these things in the preseason. It's like really about
[41:48] Speaker 2: what he did right there.
[41:49] Speaker 1: Interesting.
[41:50] Speaker 2: Cause he knows he needs that dark to be decent,
[41:52] Speaker 2: to save his job. Like, you know, so of course
[41:55] Speaker 2: he's going to be selling these things. Like he he's
[41:57] Speaker 2: selling a lot. He's like, Oh, I got my Josh Allen.
[42:00] Speaker 2: It's like, well, again, I'm never going to compare anybody
[42:02] Speaker 2: to Josh Allen ever. And, and also the progression of
[42:05] Speaker 2: Josh Allen. And also, again, you can't compare these two
[42:08] Speaker 2: guys because their tools are so different. They want, Again,
[42:12] Speaker 2: one maxes out the scales and one's more like, good.
[42:15] Speaker 2: But there's a big difference between maxing out the scale,
[42:17] Speaker 2: A +, and a B. That's a pretty big difference.
[42:21] Speaker 2: So that's what– it's kind of been funny with the Giants.
[42:25] Speaker 2: It's like they're telling themselves a lot of things, and
[42:27] Speaker 2: they have one of the hardest schedules, and I think
[42:30] Speaker 2: they're going to struggle to win a lot of games.
[42:32] Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of coaches, I don't know football on this
[42:37] Speaker 1: level in the way that I know basketball, right? But
[42:41] Speaker 1: with basketball, especially at the professional level, it takes very
[42:46] Speaker 1: little for a coach to lose a team. And the
[42:51] Speaker 1: example I talk about on this show a lot, I
[42:52] Speaker 1: found out about a team where in practice, there was
[42:55] Speaker 1: a coach who had moved up to the pros from college,
[42:58] Speaker 1: and he called five seconds on the dribbler, which is
[43:01] Speaker 1: a college call and not a professional call. And he
[43:03] Speaker 1: did that in training camp, in a practice, and it
[43:05] Speaker 1: was over. He lost them right then and there, right? Right.
[43:10] Speaker 1: Brian Callahan stood in front of God and everybody else
[43:15] Speaker 1: and said that he did not challenge a catch in
[43:17] Speaker 1: a game that was very clearly a catch by his
[43:19] Speaker 1: guys in a game they had a chance to win.
[43:22] Speaker 1: And he did not challenge it because he knew that
[43:27] Speaker 1: an arm or a hand being down was not the
[43:30] Speaker 1: same as two feet being down. Now, I want to
[43:33] Speaker 1: say two things. Number one, it says it specifically in
[43:37] Speaker 1: the rule book that any body part is the equivalent
[43:41] Speaker 1: of two feet. But number two, even if you didn't
[43:44] Speaker 1: know the rules, if you are of Brian Callahan's age
[43:48] Speaker 1: or in that ballpark, and let me look it up
[43:49] Speaker 1: because I feel like he is not too young to
[43:53] Speaker 1: understand what I'm about to say. A lot of us
[43:56] Speaker 1: grew up with some pretty solid John Maddenisms. And the
[44:00] Speaker 1: biggest one is one hand is the same as two feet.
[44:05] Speaker 1: And he did not know this. In a basketball context,
[44:09] Speaker 1: you should start looking for your new coach tomorrow because
[44:12] Speaker 1: these guys are checked out on this because I'm checked
[44:15] Speaker 1: out on him after this.
[44:16] Speaker 2: Even Cam Ward seemed like he was like, oh my God,
[44:19] Speaker 2: what am I dealing with here? It was very disappointing
[44:23] Speaker 2: as hopefully one of the good Nepos. It was pretty disappointing,
[44:28] Speaker 2: but that's the point of the upside of a Nepo
[44:32] Speaker 2: in theory. is well they have more exposure they have
[44:35] Speaker 2: more reps at this stuff they have more you know
[44:38] Speaker 2: they they pick this stuff up at seven i was
[44:40] Speaker 2: spotting footballs and reading scripts from nine years old on
[44:42] Speaker 2: it's like and it did help me hearing conversations you
[44:45] Speaker 2: just mentioned the madden thing when you just watch these
[44:47] Speaker 2: games you just learn it through osmosis i mean any
[44:49] Speaker 2: of us that do anything that we like or hobbies
[44:51] Speaker 2: or anything that's what's disappointing it's like he should know
[44:54] Speaker 2: stuff like the back of his hand like he should
[44:56] Speaker 2: know these rules like like that like everybody kind of
[44:59] Speaker 2: that one's pretty That's like a 201 level football knowledge thing.
[45:03] Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's not like some advanced
[45:04] Speaker 2: thing like a rip move negates holding penalties. You know,
[45:08] Speaker 2: like that's pretty advanced. I understand people not understanding that.
[45:11] Speaker 2: Coach's kid, but also, and this is more indicative of anything,
[45:17] Speaker 2: and maybe just of the coaching or just their system
[45:20] Speaker 2: there in Tennessee too, is a lot of these coaches
[45:22] Speaker 2: that even if they might not know the rule, they
[45:24] Speaker 2: have a guide. that knows the rules. And then they
[45:27] Speaker 2: have a line of communication that can get to them
[45:30] Speaker 2: and go like, Hey, we got to challenge us. Hey,
[45:31] Speaker 2: we got to do this because of this, this and that.
[45:33] Speaker 2: So that's, what's indicative of like, that's more negative to
[45:36] Speaker 2: me than anything that not one person either had the
[45:39] Speaker 2: trust or one person was enabled. One person thought they
[45:42] Speaker 2: had the confidence to go like, Hey, we should challenge
[45:44] Speaker 2: this or we should do this. That that's, that's really
[45:48] Speaker 2: scary to me, but I love your five seconds call
[45:51] Speaker 2: because I know, especially with NBA guys, they're, They're looking
[45:55] Speaker 2: for that stuff.
[45:56] Speaker 1: That's it.
[45:56] Speaker 2: And I heard about, who's the guy that came over from,
[46:00] Speaker 2: that was LeBron's coach in Cleveland, not Ty Lue or anything.
[46:03] Speaker 1: Oh, you're talking about David Blatt.
[46:05] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[46:05] Speaker 1: David Blatt.
[46:06] Speaker 2: I heard some stories about that kind of happening too.
[46:09] Speaker 2: Same exact kind of thing where he, supposed to be
[46:12] Speaker 2: a very smart basketball mind, but had some moments where
[46:15] Speaker 2: he didn't realize it was the NBA rules. They kind
[46:18] Speaker 2: of lost some people some things. But no, I'm glad
[46:20] Speaker 2: you brought up the Tennessee thing because I've just been like,
[46:23] Speaker 2: There's no arguing for it. There's no justification of it all.
[46:28] Speaker 2: And also it makes it worse because he should, of
[46:32] Speaker 2: all people, be a rules genius, savant, because of just
[46:37] Speaker 2: being around the game with his dad on the staff
[46:39] Speaker 2: at offensive line coach and Bill Calhoun. So yeah, very
[46:42] Speaker 2: disappointing and brewing the Nepo. the netbook name for all of.
[46:46] Speaker 1: Us i will say this also i watched a decent
[46:49] Speaker 1: bit of that game you know watching with all the
[46:51] Speaker 1: screens and i felt like i got a decent look
[46:53] Speaker 1: at a lot of the action there um i thought
[46:56] Speaker 1: their quarterback looked good i don't care what the numbers
[46:59] Speaker 1: said i thought cam ward looked really good he looked
[47:02] Speaker 1: like he was out there for dolo but i thought
[47:04] Speaker 1: he looked good i'm a big fan.
[47:06] Speaker 2: He's he's one i liked and then i did my
[47:09] Speaker 2: i usually do a big evaluation scouting study on all
[47:14] Speaker 2: the top quarterbacks and he used one after I did
[47:16] Speaker 2: that and watched seven games and looked at numbers and
[47:19] Speaker 2: everything I'm like this guy's just good like I don't
[47:21] Speaker 2: know why we're saying oh yeah it's just a bad
[47:23] Speaker 2: class that's why he's going number one it's like no
[47:24] Speaker 2: this guy's like he's got some stuff to him I
[47:27] Speaker 2: I compare I've been comparing him to Rodney Mullen I
[47:29] Speaker 2: don't know what your skateboarding knowledge is uh but Rodney
[47:32] Speaker 2: Mullen invented the kickflip amongst other tricks. And what was
[47:36] Speaker 2: cool about Rodney Mullen was he would do these advanced
[47:39] Speaker 2: looking crazy things, but his fundamentals were so good that
[47:43] Speaker 2: that let him do those crazy things to invent things.
[47:46] Speaker 2: And Cam Ward, because he does all the trick shots,
[47:48] Speaker 2: and I think some people are maybe misconstruing how he
[47:51] Speaker 2: actually plays. Dude is so smart. He's got great timing.
[47:55] Speaker 2: He's got great creativity, but it keeps him on time.
[47:59] Speaker 2: So he can throw sidearm. He can like kind of
[48:01] Speaker 2: just do these extra things but it's to be consistent
[48:05] Speaker 2: which i think is really kind of special uh but
[48:08] Speaker 2: no he looked good he had a couple throws good
[48:09] Speaker 2: process he took a couple sacks but it's whatever um
[48:12] Speaker 2: it's denver defense which might be number one defense this
[48:14] Speaker 2: year too uh he took he had a couple moments
[48:17] Speaker 2: that were like that's some really good process even if
[48:19] Speaker 2: the results weren't weren't there so i'm with you i
[48:21] Speaker 2: think even the numbers weren't great i thought he looked
[48:23] Speaker 2: really good.
[48:24] Speaker 1: Now as we start winding this down um one i'm
[48:27] Speaker 1: trying to imagine your big ass on a skateboard and
[48:29] Speaker 1: two um Ryan said in text, I think it's pretty
[48:34] Speaker 1: funny about this, which is, you know, Brian Daybold's out
[48:37] Speaker 1: here looking like he'll be Alabama's offensive coordinator next year
[48:39] Speaker 1: under Lane Kiffin. Number one, I cannot imagine a more
[48:42] Speaker 1: combustible mix than Brian Daybold and Lane Kiffin. But also,
[48:45] Speaker 1: don't forget, Daybold won a national championship as the offensive
[48:49] Speaker 1: coordinator in Alabama, and everybody was ready for him to go.
[48:54] Speaker 1: it was and meanwhile he's like if you would have
[48:56] Speaker 1: just started to in the first place like i wanted
[48:59] Speaker 1: to we'd have been just fine that was a wild
[49:02] Speaker 1: season when you really stop and look back on it
[49:04] Speaker 1: what happened there but no they won't they won't be
[49:08] Speaker 1: talking crazy to people like you see it during games
[49:10] Speaker 1: i'm like you're not tall enough to talk to me
[49:12] Speaker 1: like that well no he's.
[49:13] Speaker 2: Got his big truck that's right that's a big truck
[49:16] Speaker 2: that needs five steps to get out of. He, uh, no, he,
[49:20] Speaker 2: he's got, he was a Belichick saving guy. So it's
[49:23] Speaker 2: just like, he thinks that has to be a certain way,
[49:25] Speaker 2: but that's guys try to do this for years. Uh,
[49:28] Speaker 2: be a little mini Parcells is, And it was just
[49:30] Speaker 2: like setback football like a decade. Just people. Everyone tried
[49:35] Speaker 2: to be a Bill Parcells or a Bill Belichick and
[49:37] Speaker 2: then set football back forever. None of the Belichick guys.
[49:40] Speaker 1: Have made it work.
[49:41] Speaker 2: Ever. Ever.
[49:42] Speaker 1: None of them.
[49:43] Speaker 4: Ever.
[49:44] Speaker 2: Like ever.
[49:45] Speaker 1: Ever.
[49:46] Speaker 2: You can't find anyone.
[49:47] Speaker 1: The only one that has is Nick Saban. Yes.
[49:50] Speaker 2: Right and that's exactly true i know and and dimitrov
[49:55] Speaker 2: as a gm for the falcons had like a good
[49:57] Speaker 2: run and that was it but even his little gms
[50:00] Speaker 2: that went everywhere fail like it was just it was
[50:03] Speaker 2: everybody it's everybody because it was so there's a story
[50:06] Speaker 2: i'll wrap up with this we're tied us all together
[50:09] Speaker 2: was somebody asked um uh dimitrov and like we had
[50:14] Speaker 2: kind of like a q a when i was with
[50:15] Speaker 2: the falcons and i were kind of like so what
[50:17] Speaker 2: One of the scouts goes like, what is the Patriots
[50:20] Speaker 2: system to you? Like, what is the Patriot way? He
[50:23] Speaker 2: kind of just goes, Tom Brady. And now that was 2015, 2014.
[50:32] Speaker 2: And now 10 years later, I'm like, yeah, that sure
[50:36] Speaker 2: seemed right. Seemed right to me. That's pretty apparent what happened.
[50:40] Speaker 2: It just seemed like a really, really good quarterback with
[50:43] Speaker 2: a guy that just knew all the rules and was
[50:46] Speaker 2: willing to trade back in the draft. That was the
[50:48] Speaker 2: Patriot way, it seemed like, for a while.
[50:50] Speaker 1: Yeah. Actually, I'll ask this one last thing before we go.
[50:53] Speaker 1: What did you think about Aaron Rodgers in week one? Fine.
[50:58] Speaker 2: He had none of his combustible moments like last year.
[51:01] Speaker 2: He's not moving great. I don't think anyone should be
[51:03] Speaker 2: surprised with that. But, man, I mean, can you play
[51:06] Speaker 2: the Jets defense every week? That'll help out. The two
[51:10] Speaker 2: of the touchdowns were easy, you know. I say that
[51:13] Speaker 2: sitting in my chair in Las Vegas. But same play.
[51:17] Speaker 2: It was like a little bootleg play. So it wasn't
[51:18] Speaker 2: anything crazy. The third touchdown was a jet sweep to
[51:21] Speaker 2: Jonu Smith. I thought the Steelers offense had some nice moments.
[51:25] Speaker 2: He's just got to play like that. Like the thing
[51:27] Speaker 2: was last year is he like became, you know, arm
[51:30] Speaker 2: is still there to make some of the throws. But
[51:33] Speaker 2: some of the stuff was like, dude, you've had like
[51:35] Speaker 2: 200 starts. How do you not know protections? Like he
[51:38] Speaker 2: was awful against the Blitz and he wasn't helping it
[51:40] Speaker 2: out at all. And that was really confusing to me.
[51:43] Speaker 2: So I think there is some appeal with, like, Zach Frazier,
[51:46] Speaker 2: the center, and Arthur Smith, the OC, having some personality
[51:48] Speaker 2: to go, like, hey, we got this, and you can
[51:51] Speaker 2: do your glory hunting things. So if I had to
[51:55] Speaker 2: give it a grade, it was, like, a B minus B. Like,
[51:58] Speaker 2: I thought it was a pretty good Aaron Rodgers appearance
[52:02] Speaker 2: in 2025. I think that's the nicest way I can
[52:04] Speaker 2: put it. Had some nice moments and had none of
[52:06] Speaker 2: those moments, like, that he's had the last couple years,
[52:08] Speaker 2: where he's just, like, dirting things left and right.
[52:11] Speaker 1: I'll say the last thing on this, and this has
[52:12] Speaker 1: been in the weeds on football, but I don't know
[52:15] Speaker 1: if any two people are happier to see each other
[52:17] Speaker 1: than John New Smith and Arthur Smith. When each of
[52:19] Speaker 1: them found out that the other was available, it's like,
[52:24] Speaker 1: it's funny, isn't it? I miss you too.
[52:27] Speaker 2: It was like in the summer. It was like, oh,
[52:30] Speaker 2: Johnny Smith is the Steelers are trying to trade for
[52:32] Speaker 2: Johnny Smith. And everyone's like, what? Okay, where did that
[52:36] Speaker 2: come from?
[52:36] Speaker 3: All right, cool.
[52:37] Speaker 2: Oh, Arthur's there. That's why. It was like, didn't he
[52:39] Speaker 2: just have a good year with the Dolphins? Like, what
[52:41] Speaker 2: just happened here?
[52:42] Speaker 1: Hey, man, look, it sounds like there was some foresight
[52:46] Speaker 1: getting out of that dumpster fire.
[52:47] Speaker 2: Oh, my God. I tweeted this. It was like, my
[52:51] Speaker 2: expectations were low, but holy shit.
[52:53] Speaker 1: And then you get the report today, and today being Tuesday,
[52:59] Speaker 1: in the divorce proceedings, Tyree Hill's soon-to-be estranged wife with
[53:04] Speaker 1: eight alleged incidents of domestic violence. They may wind up
[53:08] Speaker 1: having to cut him this year. And all the talk
[53:11] Speaker 1: about trade, you're going to have to answer for it
[53:13] Speaker 1: if you trade for him. And I think he's going
[53:16] Speaker 1: to just become generally disruptive. They may wind up just
[53:19] Speaker 1: having to leave him on the curb.
[53:22] Speaker 2: I mean, all the signs are there. He, I mean,
[53:25] Speaker 2: just even going from the, like they don't name him captain.
[53:28] Speaker 2: And I know that seems stupid, but I don't know
[53:31] Speaker 2: how many times a vet with the same staff on
[53:34] Speaker 2: the same team has lost the captainship. Like, I know
[53:38] Speaker 2: that seems stupid and I know that seems silly, but
[53:40] Speaker 2: it is very like, That's telling.
[53:42] Speaker 1: That was a choice by the players.
[53:45] Speaker 2: That was everybody going like, no way. Like, no, enough.
[53:48] Speaker 2: You're not good enough for us to be doing this. Like,
[53:50] Speaker 2: to us to wave away. Like, I've seen assholes be
[53:53] Speaker 2: captains all the time. But it's just like, usually it's
[53:55] Speaker 2: because they're good players. And that's the thing with Tyreek is,
[54:00] Speaker 2: I talked to somebody in the NBA, actually. And we're
[54:02] Speaker 2: talking about Vince Carter. And we're talking about how excellent
[54:05] Speaker 2: athletes actually age better. Like, we sometimes... misconstrued the guy
[54:09] Speaker 2: that has the old game, old man game at the
[54:11] Speaker 2: Y ages better because they're advanced. Well, it's like, well,
[54:13] Speaker 2: if they're a bad athlete, they're probably become a worse athlete.
[54:16] Speaker 2: It's not going to end well, but like the really
[54:18] Speaker 2: good athletes can age well if they work hard and
[54:20] Speaker 2: they kind of like learn their game and that, you know,
[54:22] Speaker 2: adapt their game. Tyreek doesn't have that personality to like
[54:25] Speaker 2: adapt his game. His game is just purely speed. And
[54:28] Speaker 2: if you look at all of his metrics now, and
[54:30] Speaker 2: with this, Everything about him is his speed is just
[54:33] Speaker 2: dropping off a cliff. It's not even just slowly going down.
[54:38] Speaker 2: It's like, no, no, it's rapidly descending here. His average
[54:43] Speaker 2: speed last year was 12.77 miles an hour. Year before that, 13.7.
[54:48] Speaker 2: Year before that, 13.8. So it's dropped a full mile
[54:51] Speaker 2: an hour. And that's significant when we're talking about averages.
[54:54] Speaker 2: Top speed went from 22 miles an hour to just
[54:56] Speaker 2: over 21. So, again, dropped a mile an hour. And then, like,
[55:00] Speaker 2: his average, or his, like, times he's hit 15 miles
[55:02] Speaker 2: an hour dropped from 44% to 36%.
[55:05] Speaker 1: Okay, that one tells it for me. Because it's hard
[55:09] Speaker 1: to get the gradations on something as close as, like,
[55:11] Speaker 1: single numbers. But 44 to 36 is a percent?
[55:15] Speaker 2: Yes. 4.3 of his plays in 2023, he went 20
[55:19] Speaker 2: miles an hour and over. 20 miles an hour is
[55:20] Speaker 2: the elite speed.
[55:21] Speaker 1: So, 4.3 in 2023.
[55:22] Speaker 3: 1.3 in 2024.
[55:22] Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
[55:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[55:30] Speaker 1: He's also a sneaky old guy.
[55:32] Speaker 2: Yes. He is a sneaky old guy.
[55:33] Speaker 1: He's been in the league for a while. The thing
[55:36] Speaker 1: with him is it's hard to find guys that fast
[55:41] Speaker 1: who accelerate like that and who change directions.
[55:44] Speaker 2: And ball skills. Tyreek, that's an underrated thing with him
[55:47] Speaker 2: is he can adjust and everything. He's not just a
[55:49] Speaker 2: totally tiny guy, but it's all of his route running
[55:52] Speaker 2: because he's a unique route runner in that he'll sell
[55:55] Speaker 2: routes and go fricking midfield and then break back out
[55:59] Speaker 2: where most guys would just go to the hash. Well,
[56:02] Speaker 2: if you just, if you won your entire, we talk
[56:04] Speaker 2: about how guys win, if you win your entire career
[56:07] Speaker 2: that way, and we're just going to take that away
[56:08] Speaker 2: from you and you're the personality, that's this, that's like
[56:12] Speaker 2: full blown. I feel like I'm okay saying it a dick. Like,
[56:16] Speaker 2: I don't know. It's a, I don't know if that's
[56:18] Speaker 2: going to age well. So I, and again, taking the
[56:20] Speaker 2: captain ship, it's just like all the signs are there.
[56:22] Speaker 2: It's like, just, just going to fall off soon. Yeah, everybody's.
[56:26] Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel will be doing a great job running somebody's
[56:29] Speaker 1: offense for a very handsome check. Right? Like, don't you
[56:32] Speaker 1: worry about him. He'll be just fine. He's trying to
[56:34] Speaker 1: get Chip Kelly money.
[56:36] Speaker 3: Yep.
[56:36] Speaker 1: And Tua will be playing for his job under one
[56:40] Speaker 1: more coach.
[56:41] Speaker 2: Yep.
[56:42] Speaker 1: You know? And they're going to have to start that
[56:44] Speaker 1: whole thing over.
[56:48] Speaker 2: Man, it just ended up such a fizzle. Like, you know, like.
[56:52] Speaker 2: Usually you have that bad loss that's kind of like,
[56:54] Speaker 2: all right, that was the last rod. It was just
[56:56] Speaker 2: like that Chiefs wildcard game where they didn't even try,
[56:59] Speaker 2: where everybody was just cold. That's how you're going to
[57:03] Speaker 2: end it, but it actually kind of feels kind of fitting.
[57:06] Speaker 2: They just kind of literally got slowed down in the cold.
[57:10] Speaker 1: Had a spark when you started, but now you're just garbage.
[57:14] Speaker 1: Now you, Nate Tice, you're pretty dope. Check him out
[57:17] Speaker 1: at Yahoo Sports covering the NFL. My man, I appreciate you.
[57:21] Speaker 2: Thanks for having me. Always fun.
[57:22] Speaker 1: All right. Thank you, man. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks
