Bomani Jones is joined by Shannon Penn to break down why this New York Knicks playoff run feels different, how Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns have changed the ceiling for this team, and why Knicks fans are finally starting to believe this could be a real NBA Finals moment. They dig into what makes this Knicks team more likable than past versions, how Brunson became the guy, why KAT’s fit has improved, and what this run means for New York basketball right now. Bomani and Shannon also talk Oklahoma City Thunder basketball, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and why the Thunder can look elite while still feeling like the team NBA fans love to argue about. And yes, they get into the wild Trump-at-the-Knicks-game possibility, what that would mean inside Madison Square Garden, and why it would instantly become part of the story if it actually happened. [0:24] Speaker 2: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. It is
[0:28] Speaker 2: Shannon Penn on a Thursday. Shannon Penn checking out ESPN Radio.
[0:33] Speaker 2: And look, man, for those who don't know, me and
[0:35] Speaker 2: Shannon now go back about 20 years it really lands
[0:39] Speaker 2: when you start looking on television and seeing that the
[0:41] Speaker 2: carolina hurricanes look like they about to walk into the
[0:44] Speaker 2: stanley cup finals for the first time in 20 years
[0:47] Speaker 2: but anyway me and shannon go back been doing this
[0:50] Speaker 2: a long time shannon's the i don't know if the
[0:53] Speaker 2: biggest knicks fan i know is appropriate because knicks fans
[0:56] Speaker 2: get really big but i will say this i have
[0:58] Speaker 2: always found you to be the most reasonable knicks fan
[1:01] Speaker 2: that i.
[1:01] Speaker 1: Have no Appreciate that.
[1:03] Speaker 3: It's funny.
[1:04] Speaker 1: I was talking with somebody about this yesterday.
[1:06] Speaker 3: I think for most Knicks fans and people who know
[1:09] Speaker 3: Knicks fans, their Knicks fan that they know is the
[1:11] Speaker 3: biggest Knicks fan that they know.
[1:13] Speaker 1: So I'll take that as a compliment.
[1:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It could be anybody, man. Like once
[1:17] Speaker 2: it gets going, y'all really be there. But I've never
[1:20] Speaker 2: found you, however, to be the Knicks fan that all
[1:23] Speaker 2: they take is a little bit and all of a
[1:24] Speaker 2: sudden you putting them in the finals. You know what
[1:26] Speaker 2: I'm saying? Like you've not been that Knicks fan. And
[1:29] Speaker 2: while I've known you for these 20 years, The Giants
[1:33] Speaker 2: snuck a couple of championships in the Super Bowl. The
[1:38] Speaker 2: Yankees got one World Series. But otherwise, you have had
[1:43] Speaker 2: misery inflicted upon you as a New York sports fan
[1:48] Speaker 2: in general. And as a Knicks fan in particular, there's
[1:51] Speaker 2: been very little cause for optimism in the time that
[1:54] Speaker 2: I've known you, but you have played that damn go
[1:56] Speaker 2: New York, go New York, go song, which the most
[1:59] Speaker 2: 90 sounding thing that has ever existed is that song.
[2:02] Speaker 2: I did not realize when you used to play it
[2:05] Speaker 2: on our show that I would get here and they
[2:08] Speaker 2: was playing it at the building. Like I didn't know
[2:11] Speaker 2: that y'all had adopted this as y'all's classic forever, but
[2:14] Speaker 2: I guess those were the good old days for y'all. Right.
[2:17] Speaker 3: I guess since it's all about nostalgia and 90s nostalgia,
[2:20] Speaker 3: there's no song that sounds as 90s and as cheesy
[2:24] Speaker 3: as that Knicks Go New York song.
[2:27] Speaker 1: So hey, why not? Adopt it.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Why?
[2:30] Speaker 1: Weaponize it. Instead of it being corny, that's our thing.
[2:34] Speaker 2: No, y'all ain't even bothered to try to get a
[2:36] Speaker 2: new one. And that's because nothing ever felt better. Although
[2:39] Speaker 2: that sounds too early for 94. That sounds like a
[2:42] Speaker 2: 90 or 91 sort of situation. You know what I'm saying?
[2:47] Speaker 2: But that's y'all's jam. That's y'all's time. And now I've
[2:50] Speaker 2: said this.
[2:52] Speaker 4: They've played literally one of the best months of basketball
[2:55] Speaker 4: in the history of the NBA.
[2:57] Speaker 2: It is the craziest thing I've ever seen.
[3:00] Speaker 1: It was funny.
[3:01] Speaker 3: After the Knicks game four sweep of Cleveland, so I
[3:05] Speaker 3: was watching the game and my wife started recording me,
[3:07] Speaker 3: of course, because she wanted to see what my reaction
[3:08] Speaker 3: would be after they won. And she was kind of
[3:11] Speaker 3: disappointed with how subdued I was. And she was like,
[3:14] Speaker 3: I thought you would be more emotional, more happy. And
[3:16] Speaker 3: I was just like, I'm in shock. I really can't
[3:20] Speaker 3: believe it. Because as you know, Nick's fandom is built
[3:24] Speaker 3: on trauma and and all the bad things that happened.
[3:26] Speaker 3: So I was like, I was still waiting. Like I was,
[3:29] Speaker 3: so when they swept, when they swept Cleveland, like I'm
[3:32] Speaker 3: still in disbelief. Like I'm still, here we are almost
[3:35] Speaker 3: a week later. Like I'm still in disbelief. Like, all right,
[3:38] Speaker 3: when's the rug gonna get pulled out? Like when is
[3:40] Speaker 3: somebody gonna get, when is OG's hamstring gonna go? Like
[3:42] Speaker 3: when is something bad gonna happen? When are they gonna
[3:44] Speaker 3: be the first team in NBA history to blow a
[3:47] Speaker 3: 3-0 series lead? Like I was still waiting for that
[3:49] Speaker 3: to happen and it never did.
[3:50] Speaker 1: So like even these many days later, I'm still in shock. Like,
[3:53] Speaker 1: hold on.
[3:54] Speaker 3: To quote John Starks, did this dude really did this?
[3:57] Speaker 3: I'm still like, hold on, did this really happen?
[3:59] Speaker 1: I'm still in shock.
[4:00] Speaker 2: I think one of the biggest misunderstandings people have about
[4:04] Speaker 2: Knicks fans, and again, it's because, and Shannon, you left
[4:08] Speaker 2: New York young enough that you got over this, but
[4:10] Speaker 2: y'all don't send y'all, when y'all send people out, man,
[4:12] Speaker 2: they just talk a little bit too much about being
[4:14] Speaker 2: from New York and gotta hype that shit up too
[4:15] Speaker 2: much that they get to lie, right? I think the
[4:18] Speaker 2: greatest misunderstanding about Knicks fans is that Knicks fans don't
[4:21] Speaker 2: understand what the Knicks are or are not.
[4:23] Speaker 1: Right.
[4:23] Speaker 2: Like like I think Knicks fans and I've realized that
[4:26] Speaker 2: once I got here, they have not been pretending like
[4:29] Speaker 2: being like rooting for the Knicks is like rooting for
[4:31] Speaker 2: the Yankees. There is no misunderstanding about this. They understand
[4:35] Speaker 2: that they have been consistently let down. The point I
[4:38] Speaker 2: made for the longest when the Rangers won the Stanley
[4:40] Speaker 2: Cup in 1994, it had been 54 years in that year.
[4:43] Speaker 2: 1940 was plastered everywhere. It's been 53 for these guys, right?
[4:51] Speaker 2: Like with the Rangers, it was called a curse. With
[4:53] Speaker 2: the Knicks, it's just what y'all were. Like y'all know
[4:56] Speaker 2: that this is what it is. People so happy walking
[4:59] Speaker 2: around here in part because, you know, y'all got a
[5:02] Speaker 2: team that, you know, some fairly likable guys.
[5:05] Speaker 3: Right, not to mention too, it's like the difference between
[5:07] Speaker 3: the Yankees and the Knicks, because the Yankees has had
[5:10] Speaker 3: so much success, like there's an arrogance that Yankee fans have. Yeah.
[5:13] Speaker 1: That the Knicks fans haven't been afforded.
[5:15] Speaker 3: And of course, I know it's Knicks fans, Yankee fans,
[5:17] Speaker 3: but as a Knicks fan, you haven't been afforded that
[5:20] Speaker 3: level of arrogance. So it's like, so yeah, you have
[5:23] Speaker 3: this false hope and like, oh, maybe this person will
[5:26] Speaker 3: be the savior or this executive or this coach or
[5:28] Speaker 3: this superstar or this person because that's all you had.
[5:31] Speaker 3: But because you didn't have anything that was tangible on
[5:33] Speaker 3: the court, So it was always hope.
[5:35] Speaker 1: It was always hope.
[5:36] Speaker 3: And then it's interesting that the guy who actually brought
[5:40] Speaker 3: you hope was somebody who, when they brought Brunson in,
[5:43] Speaker 3: it wasn't looked at as the savior.
[5:44] Speaker 1: It was just looked at as another guy.
[5:46] Speaker 3: And it turns out that the other guy became that
[5:49] Speaker 3: quote-unquote savior up until this point.
[5:53] Speaker 2: Yo, Brunson kind of like, what if John Starks was
[5:55] Speaker 2: really good? Right. Like, not exactly, right? It's not a
[5:59] Speaker 2: one-to-one comparison here.
[6:02] Speaker 3: But.
[6:03] Speaker 2: New York like a gritty underdog situation, right? Brunson, despite
[6:07] Speaker 2: his dad being a former player, despite his dad being
[6:11] Speaker 2: the coach, that shit is still weird. Like despite those things,
[6:14] Speaker 2: he still has that kind of like up from the
[6:17] Speaker 2: bottom sort of situation. But I ask you this, because
[6:20] Speaker 2: this dawned on me yesterday when I was thinking about
[6:22] Speaker 2: kind of the personality of this team. The NBA now
[6:27] Speaker 2: has a lot more good kids in it, right? Like,
[6:31] Speaker 2: a lot more nice, respectful young men might say, yes, ma'am, no, ma'am,
[6:36] Speaker 2: but maybe not, because these motherfuckers these days don't know,
[6:38] Speaker 2: they ain't been taught right. But, you know, they have
[6:40] Speaker 2: guys that seem like they might, you know, come kick
[6:42] Speaker 2: it that way. You could take Karl-Anthony Towns to meet
[6:45] Speaker 2: your Abuela, right? Like, you could do all this. Do
[6:49] Speaker 2: you prefer having this team, and by the way, everybody
[6:51] Speaker 2: seems to like each other, their vibes are good, they
[6:54] Speaker 2: seem to joke a lot on the podcast.
[6:56] Speaker 4: Or, or.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Was it more fun when you had the team that
[7:00] Speaker 2: nobody wanted to fight?
[7:03] Speaker 3: See, that's the thing. I think the beauty of it
[7:06] Speaker 3: is because I got to experience both. So it's like,
[7:09] Speaker 3: me personally, like, absolutely, I would prefer a team that
[7:12] Speaker 3: everybody wants to fight.
[7:14] Speaker 2: Like, come on.
[7:14] Speaker 1: Like, who wouldn't want to have a bully?
[7:17] Speaker 3: But at the same time, I got to experience that
[7:19] Speaker 3: with those 90s teams, and they only took a spot
[7:21] Speaker 3: so far. So, like, it's weird. Like, it's weird.
[7:23] Speaker 2: I mean, hold on, hold on. They took you as
[7:25] Speaker 2: far as these cats down.
[7:26] Speaker 1: So far, right.
[7:27] Speaker 3: But the weird thing about it now is that, like,
[7:30] Speaker 3: to have a team like the Knicks, that are a
[7:31] Speaker 3: bunch of nice guys that people really don't dislike.
[7:34] Speaker 1: Like, it's weird.
[7:35] Speaker 3: Like, Knicks teams over the past, like, they've had a
[7:37] Speaker 3: player or style of play or whatever it is that
[7:40] Speaker 3: people can say, hey, I don't like this Knicks team
[7:42] Speaker 3: because of X.
[7:43] Speaker 1: I don't like this Knicks team.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Because they try to be bullies or, or mellow ISO ball,
[7:47] Speaker 3: whatever the case may be over the course of the year.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Now, like they really.
[7:50] Speaker 3: Haven't given you a reason to dislike them because it's
[7:53] Speaker 3: a bunch of these nice guys. It's because of the
[7:55] Speaker 3: Jalen Brunson's and the McHale bridges and the OG and
[7:58] Speaker 3: Carl Anthony towns and Josh Hart being an Eagle scout.
[8:01] Speaker 3: It's like a bunch of these dudes that are like
[8:03] Speaker 3: nice guys that people really can't latch on to a
[8:05] Speaker 3: reason outside of just Nick fans find a reason to
[8:08] Speaker 3: hate or dislike this team.
[8:10] Speaker 2: But I hadn't thought about this, right? Not just, um,
[8:15] Speaker 2: The Pat Riley era of Knicks, right? Look, Pat Riley
[8:19] Speaker 2: era of Knicks. I don't know if it ain't never
[8:22] Speaker 2: going to be like this again in the NBA. First
[8:24] Speaker 2: of all, it was the era where guys didn't necessarily
[8:28] Speaker 2: have to be good at basketball to be good basketball players.
[8:32] Speaker 2: I understand that that doesn't make sense to a lot
[8:34] Speaker 2: of people. I have long said I kind of like
[8:36] Speaker 2: the NBA a little better when the guys weren't quite
[8:38] Speaker 2: as good because they had to figure it out one
[8:40] Speaker 2: way or another.
[8:41] Speaker 4: But.
[8:42] Speaker 2: Them teams had like John Starks, who was really just
[8:45] Speaker 2: kind of in spirit like the other guys, but Charles Oakley,
[8:50] Speaker 2: Anthony Mason, Xavier McDaniel. Can't forget that that was there
[8:55] Speaker 2: for a while. Then you get to later and you
[8:57] Speaker 2: start picking up guys like Sprewell, right? sneaky in there,
[9:01] Speaker 2: Hartford's own Marcus Camby, right? Who did he try to
[9:05] Speaker 2: take out? Was it Danny Ferry that he tried to
[9:07] Speaker 2: take out that time?
[9:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, it was Danny Ferry, yeah. He swung on Danny Ferry, yeah.
[9:10] Speaker 2: But, like, then even if you continue on into the
[9:13] Speaker 2: 2000s and get to, like, not so much the same
[9:16] Speaker 2: kind of edge on them, but the vibes they gave
[9:18] Speaker 2: other people, like your Mello, Iman, Shumpert, J.R. Smith, that
[9:23] Speaker 2: whole run of dudes.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Nick's tape, the Nick's tape run, right?
[9:25] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[9:27] Speaker 2: There's a word I might use if I was just
[9:29] Speaker 2: talking to you and Ryan wasn't sitting over there. You
[9:31] Speaker 2: know what I mean? But there's been.
[9:35] Speaker 3: An aesthetic.
[9:36] Speaker 1: Right.
[9:36] Speaker 2: A mad aesthetic that has run through for this franchise
[9:42] Speaker 2: for nearly 30 years. Now, it's the cul-de-sac boys.
[9:48] Speaker 1: And it's totally different. It's like....
[9:52] Speaker 3: They're not really because of their background and, private schools
[9:56] Speaker 3: and the whole thing. They don't kick it like a
[9:59] Speaker 3: lot of the out-the-mud type situation. Brunson in his height, underdog,
[10:06] Speaker 3: or whatever. But they didn't really grow up in that
[10:09] Speaker 3: same way. Their path, like you said, their paths to
[10:12] Speaker 3: the NBA weren't the same as a John Starks or
[10:15] Speaker 3: Anthony Mason or even a Charles Oakley coming from a
[10:18] Speaker 3: Virginia Union. It's a little different, but it's interesting how,
[10:23] Speaker 3: with that being said, the city has still been able
[10:25] Speaker 3: to embrace this team, though.
[10:27] Speaker 2: Because they still play like that, though, right? So, like, Brunson,
[10:29] Speaker 2: we could go on and on about that. But, like,
[10:31] Speaker 2: Josh Hart having that run where he was playing power forward.
[10:35] Speaker 2: at his size, right? Towns, hey man, Towns didn't raise
[10:40] Speaker 2: his level of game up, man. I'm proud of myself.
[10:43] Speaker 2: Can I just say this right now? Proud of myself,
[10:45] Speaker 2: I tell you, because you can vouch for this because
[10:47] Speaker 2: we talk about the Knicks periodically. I didn't try to
[10:51] Speaker 2: hold on to the old Towns any longer than necessary.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Once it became clear that something was different, I was like, oh, okay,
[10:58] Speaker 2: something is different. And now the something is different is,
[11:02] Speaker 2: I felt like the only way they could win is
[11:03] Speaker 2: if he was their best player. And he has been
[11:05] Speaker 2: their best player. And they're running it through him, and
[11:07] Speaker 2: then they turn into, like, the juggernaut.
[11:09] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[11:10] Speaker 1: Yeah. And I'll go back. I'll raise my hand.
[11:13] Speaker 3: I had a lot of questions about the Towns acquisition
[11:16] Speaker 3: when they first brought him in. I wasn't sure how
[11:19] Speaker 3: it was going to work with him in the city
[11:21] Speaker 3: because we know, like, New York fans are tough.
[11:23] Speaker 1: And Towns is a nice guy.
[11:25] Speaker 3: And so I didn't know how he was going to
[11:26] Speaker 3: come back, especially when he would go through his periods
[11:30] Speaker 3: of not playing well. And then you saw that early
[11:33] Speaker 3: in the season, too, when Mike Brown came along and
[11:36] Speaker 3: brought in the new offense, and Towns was essentially trying
[11:39] Speaker 3: to find himself or find his place in this offense.
[11:42] Speaker 3: And then once now they've unlocked this, the term that's
[11:46] Speaker 3: been used is Towns being the hub. Now that they've
[11:48] Speaker 3: unlocked this, it's been really interesting to watch, too. And
[11:52] Speaker 3: about that, too, I think more, and I'm going all
[11:55] Speaker 3: over the place, excuse me, but more with the With
[11:58] Speaker 3: the running offense through Towns, I think that's something that
[12:00] Speaker 3: Brown wanted to do the entire time.
[12:02] Speaker 1: He did.
[12:03] Speaker 3: But I think more than getting a buy-in from Towns,
[12:05] Speaker 3: it was really getting a buy-in from Brunson. Yeah. Because
[12:07] Speaker 3: you got Brunson being ball-dominant, and it's like Brown, I
[12:10] Speaker 3: don't think, wanted to come in right away and say, hey, Jalen,
[12:14] Speaker 3: we're taking the ball out your hand. We're running it
[12:15] Speaker 3: through Towns. That wouldn't have went over as well. So
[12:18] Speaker 3: I think he tried to incorporate it slowly, maybe got
[12:20] Speaker 3: some pushback early, kind of left it on the table
[12:23] Speaker 3: there for most of midseason. And it was like, all right,
[12:25] Speaker 3: now that we're in the playoffs, it's time to ramp
[12:27] Speaker 3: this up and give teams a look that they haven't
[12:30] Speaker 3: really seen from us this season.
[12:31] Speaker 1: I think that's what happened, especially in game. What is
[12:34] Speaker 1: that game? against the Atlanta Hawks.
[12:36] Speaker 3: I think it was like, all right, DEFCON won. It's
[12:38] Speaker 3: time to press the button. We tried it your way.
[12:41] Speaker 1: Now we got to do it my way.
[12:42] Speaker 2: Well, I think the other thing, too, that is interesting
[12:44] Speaker 2: is that running it through Towns has been, ironically, meant
[12:47] Speaker 2: fewer shots for Towns and fewer shots for Brunson. Like,
[12:53] Speaker 2: it's everybody getting it right, right? And so they there, and.
[12:58] Speaker 2: Towns has also stopped playing like the dumbest man in
[13:01] Speaker 2: the NBA. I don't know what happened. I don't know
[13:03] Speaker 2: what part of it, because he was still playing like
[13:06] Speaker 2: a moron for much of his tenure. I think it
[13:10] Speaker 2: also helped him in New York, and I had really
[13:13] Speaker 2: underrated how important this was. Not so much how important
[13:16] Speaker 2: it was that he beat Karl-Anthony Towns, but how important
[13:19] Speaker 2: it was that he not beat Julius Ramos.
[13:23] Speaker 3: That part.
[13:24] Speaker 2: Just don't be Julius Randle. Because Carl do all that
[13:28] Speaker 2: weird stuff and change all his voices and everything else.
[13:31] Speaker 2: But he'll be out there crying.
[13:33] Speaker 3: Right. I mean, you'll still get the, that's a foul
[13:35] Speaker 3: from him as he's driving before even his shot attempt. But,
[13:39] Speaker 3: you know, a lot of the layups be going in.
[13:41] Speaker 3: So it's like, all right, I'm going to roll with it.
[13:43] Speaker 3: You know, but like you said.
[13:44] Speaker 1: Not being Julius Randle was key too.
[13:46] Speaker 3: Like we've heard all the reports about his moodiness with
[13:49] Speaker 3: New York, with Minnesota.
[13:50] Speaker 1: It's like not being, like not being that.
[13:52] Speaker 3: And, you know, sometimes- He would sulk and roll his eyes,
[13:55] Speaker 3: speaking of Towns, when he wasn't involved and you had
[13:57] Speaker 3: the quotes of him, you know, I'm still trying to
[14:00] Speaker 3: figure it out. Essentially, him saying, I'm still trying to
[14:02] Speaker 3: figure it out, was I'm just waiting for Mike Brown
[14:04] Speaker 3: to put the ball in my hands. And apparently, I
[14:07] Speaker 3: don't know if it was a kumbaya or some come
[14:09] Speaker 3: to Jesus moment between Towns and Brunson, But at some point,
[14:12] Speaker 3: they was like, all right, look, in order for us
[14:14] Speaker 3: to win, we're going to have.
[14:15] Speaker 1: To do this.
[14:16] Speaker 3: And if you want to get to where we think
[14:19] Speaker 3: we can get to, it can't just be ISO Brunson.
[14:22] Speaker 1: And so far, that's what they've been able to do.
[14:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, so here's the thing I don't think I've talked
[14:26] Speaker 2: about on here. And I'm curious what you think about this,
[14:29] Speaker 2: given this is your squad. But I kind of feel
[14:35] Speaker 2: like we're not giving Jim Dolan enough credit for what's
[14:41] Speaker 2: going on. on here.
[14:43] Speaker 3: So, so, so bro, we got to give Jim, we
[14:45] Speaker 3: got to give, give Jim Dolan credit for not getting
[14:47] Speaker 3: in the way.
[14:48] Speaker 2: Is that what we do?
[14:49] Speaker 3: We got to, we got to give Jim Dolan the,
[14:51] Speaker 3: I take care of my kids credit.
[14:53] Speaker 1: Hold on. Like we got to give him that kind
[14:56] Speaker 1: of credit.
[14:57] Speaker 2: I have seen people make the point that the best
[14:59] Speaker 2: thing to ever happen to the Knicks was the sphere.
[15:01] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[15:02] Speaker 2: That the argument is that since the sphere opened in
[15:03] Speaker 2: Vegas and he has dedicated his attention to the sphere,
[15:06] Speaker 2: that that's been better for the team.
[15:07] Speaker 3: Right. Right.
[15:08] Speaker 1: Quiet as cat. He's working on a second spear in D.C. too.
[15:12] Speaker 2: Oh, I think that's a bad idea. That may stress
[15:14] Speaker 2: him out a little bit. But this is where I
[15:17] Speaker 2: do think he gets some credit. I can't speak for you.
[15:21] Speaker 2: I thought that it was a bit unrealistic to fire
[15:25] Speaker 2: Thibodeau last year after they made the conference finals with
[15:27] Speaker 2: a team that I thought was a conference final sort
[15:30] Speaker 2: of team. Now this year, everything was different in terms
[15:33] Speaker 2: of what was going on with Tatum being hurt and
[15:35] Speaker 2: everything else. There was no reason for them not to
[15:38] Speaker 2: be able to make it to the NBA Finals, and
[15:40] Speaker 2: they have made it. But Golden looked at the team
[15:44] Speaker 2: and said, this is a team that should have gone
[15:45] Speaker 2: to the NBA Finals, and we didn't. And so now
[15:48] Speaker 2: we're going to hire a coach to get us in
[15:49] Speaker 2: the NBA Finals. And he fired the coach, and he
[15:52] Speaker 2: hired a coach, and they made it to the NBA Finals. Like,
[15:55] Speaker 2: that was not a move that he had to make.
[15:57] Speaker 2: And he made the decision, and it has turned out
[16:00] Speaker 2: to be the right one. This is the front office
[16:03] Speaker 2: that he has put in place. Even if you say
[16:05] Speaker 2: that it's him getting out of the way, he decided
[16:07] Speaker 2: to go with Leon Rose, right? He decided to go
[16:09] Speaker 2: with William Wesley. They have put this, they put this
[16:12] Speaker 2: thing together and it's not, it's not like they put
[16:14] Speaker 2: it together where they won the ping pong lottery and
[16:17] Speaker 2: they just had guys that all you had to do
[16:18] Speaker 2: is figure out what to do around them. Like they
[16:20] Speaker 2: had to put, they had to figure out who to
[16:21] Speaker 2: set up and put together. They made the move to
[16:24] Speaker 2: get Carl Anthony tiles, right? Which I wouldn't have made.
[16:27] Speaker 5: They did that. They did all the things now. I mean,
[16:30] Speaker 5: now they're in the NBA finals. And to answer that point,
[16:34] Speaker 5: it's been a level. I think the big word has
[16:35] Speaker 5: been disciplined as well. It's been disciplined from Dolan not
[16:39] Speaker 5: getting in the way. It's been disciplined from Leon Rose
[16:42] Speaker 5: not to bite. You even go back and we just saw,
[16:45] Speaker 5: even after signing Jalen Brunson, the Knicks had been in
[16:48] Speaker 5: talks with still trying to acquire Donovan Mitchell at that
[16:50] Speaker 5: time from Utah. And then Danny Ainge was asking for,
[16:54] Speaker 5: of course, Danny Ainge's multiple draft, multiple first round picks,
[16:57] Speaker 5: RJ Barrett, Mitchell.
[16:58] Speaker 3: Robinson, what have you. And Leon, Leon Rose was like, nah,
[17:01] Speaker 3: I'm good. Like think about how disastrous that possibly would
[17:04] Speaker 3: have been if you would have had two ball dominant
[17:07] Speaker 3: six to a shorter guards in your backcourt. Like, so, so,
[17:10] Speaker 3: so to have that, that discipline from, from Rose or
[17:14] Speaker 3: to have that discipline from him, like you said, to
[17:16] Speaker 3: make the Carl Anthony towns move or, or to say,
[17:21] Speaker 3: all right, Tibbs took.
[17:22] Speaker 1: Us as long as far as he could.
[17:23] Speaker 3: We got to change some things on the offense because
[17:25] Speaker 3: we're skilled enough and have the personnel already here without
[17:28] Speaker 3: really bringing in another player. Like, yeah, Jordan Clarkson on
[17:31] Speaker 3: the bench. Outside of us, this is the same team
[17:33] Speaker 3: that they had last year. So to identify to say,
[17:35] Speaker 3: all right, we have the talent. We just need more
[17:39] Speaker 3: from the talent that we have already on this roster.
[17:41] Speaker 3: And to be able to make that move from Mike Brown,
[17:42] Speaker 3: you got to give Leon Rose his credit there.
[17:45] Speaker 2: Hey, speaking of Mitchell Robinson, should he be allowed to
[17:49] Speaker 2: wear number 23? Like, I don't think, I was talking
[17:53] Speaker 2: the other day about how I think Landry Shabbat should
[17:55] Speaker 2: be allowed to wear number 44. Like, I think that
[17:57] Speaker 2: there's a baseline level of goods you gotta be to
[17:59] Speaker 2: wear number 44, no matter what team it is. And
[18:01] Speaker 2: I just don't think, like, unless you wore it in
[18:03] Speaker 2: college and maybe you wore it in college, I don't know.
[18:04] Speaker 2: But like John Wallace, he was grandfathered into 44. I
[18:08] Speaker 2: get it. It was even the same colors. You understand
[18:10] Speaker 2: what I'm saying? And then somebody in the comments on
[18:13] Speaker 2: YouTube made the point, well, what about Mitchell Robinson wearing 23?
[18:16] Speaker 2: And I was like, damn, I honestly can't believe they
[18:20] Speaker 2: allowed that to happen. You got to at least be
[18:21] Speaker 2: able to dribble a shoe in order to be number 23.
[18:26] Speaker 3: But to Mitch's credit now, I mean, he's the longest
[18:29] Speaker 3: tenured player. Longest tenure in New York Knicks. Like how
[18:33] Speaker 3: crazy is that? He and Kevin Knox were drafted the
[18:35] Speaker 3: same year. Like just to put that in perspective. He
[18:39] Speaker 3: has the longest tenure in New York Knicks.
[18:41] Speaker 2: When's the last time you thought of Kevin Knox? And
[18:44] Speaker 2: number two, imagine if you had told Kevin Knox in the, wow,
[18:48] Speaker 2: how old do you think Kevin Knox is?
[18:50] Speaker 1: 27? He is all of 26. Oh my gosh.
[18:57] Speaker 3: Yes.
[18:57] Speaker 1: And that's a lifetime ago.
[18:58] Speaker 3: Yeah. Right. Right.
[18:59] Speaker 4: Right.
[18:59] Speaker 2: So this is eight years ago. Can you imagine eight
[19:02] Speaker 2: years ago telling Kevin Knox that he would be playing
[19:05] Speaker 2: for the Windy City Bulls and Mitchell Robinson would be
[19:09] Speaker 2: in the NBA finals?
[19:10] Speaker 1: Exactly.
[19:10] Speaker 3: And Kevin Knox's name has come up recently because all
[19:13] Speaker 3: the Knicks fans now, everybody online is like, hey, I've
[19:16] Speaker 3: been I've been out.
[19:17] Speaker 1: We've been out the mud. We've been down bad so long.
[19:19] Speaker 3: I was going to those games when I used to
[19:21] Speaker 3: have to watch X player, when I used to have
[19:23] Speaker 3: to watch Kevin Knox, or if I used to watch
[19:25] Speaker 3: Langston Galloway, no disrespect. Well, I was going to these
[19:27] Speaker 3: games and we had Emmanuel Moutier or whatever the case
[19:30] Speaker 3: might be.
[19:30] Speaker 2: Frank Milakina.
[19:31] Speaker 1: Frank Milakina. You know, I was out here seeing Andreas Bartignani.
[19:35] Speaker 3: He's trying to jump from the free throw line. Like it's,
[19:37] Speaker 3: it's all of those examples. And I think that like
[19:39] Speaker 3: I mentioned before, like that's, part of the Knicks fandom
[19:42] Speaker 3: is built on that trauma. So it's like, all right, hey,
[19:45] Speaker 3: we drafted this player, and then the guy right after
[19:47] Speaker 3: him becomes, you know, whomever, Donald Mitchell.
[19:50] Speaker 2: Or the thing the thing with y'all is is y'all
[19:52] Speaker 2: some optimists right like that's the other part i think
[19:54] Speaker 2: that people miss it's less that you guys get are
[19:57] Speaker 2: arrogant than you guys are optimists right and so you
[19:59] Speaker 2: bought hard on frank nila kina right you bought in
[20:02] Speaker 2: hard on um on the rooster Danilo Gallinari we could
[20:08] Speaker 2: go through.
[20:09] Speaker 3: Like Phil Jackson you know in the triangle and hey
[20:14] Speaker 3: if Steve Kerr had this success in Golden State well
[20:17] Speaker 3: maybe Dirk Fisher in the triangle can do the same
[20:19] Speaker 3: or Kurt Rambis or maybe Jeff Hornacek or.
[20:23] Speaker 2: I forgot about Jeff Hornacek or David Fisdale or you
[20:28] Speaker 2: name it do you know the next three picks after
[20:32] Speaker 2: Kevin Knox off the top of your head or the
[20:34] Speaker 2: next two See.
[20:36] Speaker 3: I always mix this up because it was the Nilekina
[20:39] Speaker 3: and the Knox where it was like guys like SG.
[20:43] Speaker 1: Donovan Mitchell was in one of those, right?
[20:45] Speaker 2: Okay, so Donovan Mitchell is in the year before. It
[20:48] Speaker 2: was Mikael Bridges, who eventually found his way home, and
[20:51] Speaker 2: Shea Gildas Alexander were the next two picks after Kevin Knox.
[20:54] Speaker 2: I almost took it to three.
[20:56] Speaker 3: Don't even say that. Say that slower so the people
[20:58] Speaker 3: can hear you. Who were the next two picks after
[21:02] Speaker 3: Kevin Knox?
[21:03] Speaker 2: Mikael Bridges and Shea Gildas Alexander. I almost took it
[21:07] Speaker 2: to three, but that would have got us into the
[21:08] Speaker 2: tricky case of Miles Bridges, and I didn't want to
[21:10] Speaker 2: do that. Let me see. Donovan Mitchell was in 2017. Yes,
[21:17] Speaker 2: that's when the Knicks took Frank Nilekina, but to be fair,
[21:20] Speaker 2: it was a while before you got to the better players.
[21:22] Speaker 2: It went from Frank Nilekina to Dennis Smith Jr. to
[21:26] Speaker 2: Zach Collins to Malik Monk to Luke Kennard, then to
[21:29] Speaker 2: Donovan Mitchell, and then to Bam Adebayo.
[21:31] Speaker 3: And you mentioned Dennis Smith Jr., who we then traded
[21:34] Speaker 3: for As part of the Porzingis trade.
[21:36] Speaker 1: So we got him too. He did.
[21:38] Speaker 2: He eventually found his way home.
[21:40] Speaker 1: See?
[21:42] Speaker 3: We got him.
[21:44] Speaker 2: I don't know. The NBA contributes itself so much better
[21:47] Speaker 2: than any other sport to random games of name that dude. Right.
[21:52] Speaker 2: Just some dude that and it ain't even necessarily a
[21:54] Speaker 2: guy that played there a long time. It's not necessarily
[21:56] Speaker 2: a guy that was a draft bus. It's just sometimes
[21:59] Speaker 2: for whatever reason, that dude was on your team.
[22:03] Speaker 3: Right.
[22:03] Speaker 2: And you have some association with something that that dude
[22:07] Speaker 2: did when he was on your team. And you just
[22:10] Speaker 2: won't forget it. Who's that dude? It could be anybody.
[22:14] Speaker 1: Right, exactly.
[22:14] Speaker 3: Like for Nick Fed, you say Marty Collins and you're like,
[22:17] Speaker 3: Marty Collins? Oh, that's the dude that was in the
[22:19] Speaker 3: Mellow fight. There we go.
[22:22] Speaker 2: Oh my God.
[22:23] Speaker 3: Nate Robinson and Marty Collins and Mellow and he's still
[22:27] Speaker 3: in Denver.
[22:27] Speaker 1: You go Marty Collins. Marty Collins from Temple? Yeah, the
[22:29] Speaker 1: dude who was in the Mellow fight.
[22:31] Speaker 3: There you go.
[22:31] Speaker 1: Once a Nick, always a Nick.
[22:34] Speaker 2: That fight, that wasn't a fight, but was such a
[22:36] Speaker 2: big deal because it came close to after the palace.
[22:40] Speaker 2: And so it was treated with a different situation. where
[22:44] Speaker 2: Melo did his, well, we know what Mitch Blood Green
[22:48] Speaker 2: would have said that Melo did.
[22:52] Speaker 1: Good reference.
[22:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
[22:55] Speaker 3: Look, that was, hey, what if 6'8, 200 and some odd,
[23:00] Speaker 3: power forward was playing safety in the NFL?
[23:03] Speaker 1: That's right.
[23:04] Speaker 2: That's right. He hit him, and then... Hashtag IYK. YK.
[23:12] Speaker 1: Harlem Zone. Bitch.
[23:14] Speaker 2: Bitch. Bitch. Like, the idea that in the 80s, things
[23:17] Speaker 2: happened like the heavyweight champion and another boxer would get
[23:22] Speaker 2: into a fight outside of Dapper Dan's.
[23:24] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[23:25] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Like, that's a whole different world of athletics. That's
[23:28] Speaker 2: a whole different New York. It's a whole different everything
[23:32] Speaker 2: just to the idea that, yeah, these cats were just
[23:33] Speaker 2: getting into fights on the street.
[23:36] Speaker 3: And to, like, that's like Tyson was making big money
[23:40] Speaker 3: then too. Like we say, like it wasn't just like
[23:43] Speaker 3: regular dude, this is the heavyweight champion of the world
[23:45] Speaker 3: making huge money, the biggest draw and pay-per-view at the
[23:49] Speaker 3: time getting into fist fight outside.
[23:51] Speaker 1: Of a Dapper Dan's in Harlow. How crazy is that?
[23:55] Speaker 1: What if I told you?
[23:56] Speaker 2: Like that's, that's its own thing. Well also having to explain,
[23:59] Speaker 2: like fully explain the Dapper Dan situation.
[24:02] Speaker 1: Right.
[24:02] Speaker 2: Because on one hand, I understand people's argument that, you know,
[24:07] Speaker 2: it's the same that these brands did not want us
[24:10] Speaker 2: in their clothes. They felt like we were bringing out
[24:11] Speaker 2: a property value, so forth and so on. On the
[24:14] Speaker 2: other hand. what flagrant trademark infringement this was. It was blatant.
[24:22] Speaker 3: It was blatant. It was so blatant.
[24:25] Speaker 2: People act like the folks was wrong.
[24:28] Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
[24:33] Speaker 4: It was so preposterous. I don't care how fly it was.
[24:38] Speaker 4: You figured out something else. It's a shame these people
[24:41] Speaker 4: wouldn't give you a job. But no, you can't do that.
[24:44] Speaker 3: No, no, you're straight ripping off their patterns and slapping
[24:48] Speaker 3: it on a jacket.
[24:49] Speaker 2: Like, what are we doing? It's like, there's got to
[24:52] Speaker 2: be a way that we can be happy for him
[24:53] Speaker 2: and not lie about it. Right? There's got to be.
[24:57] Speaker 2: But coming up next, I got to tell you about,
[25:00] Speaker 2: it looked like we might have a new celebrity coming
[25:02] Speaker 2: to the Knicks games in the NBA Finals. I don't
[25:04] Speaker 2: know if Shannon heard about this, but we talked about
[25:06] Speaker 2: it coming up next. Oh, he's heard. He's heard. You

[26:08] Speaker 2: hyphen offer hyphen terms. All right, we are back with
[26:13] Speaker 2: Shannon Pidd. Check out ESPN Radio. Your man say that
[26:21] Speaker 2: he got invited by Jim Dolan to come to the
[26:24] Speaker 2: NBA Finals. Trump say he gonna come to the game.
[26:27] Speaker 3: All right, look, I know he and Dolan are boys
[26:29] Speaker 3: and I get it. Like Trump used to be at
[26:32] Speaker 3: Nick games in the 80s and 90s or what have you.
[26:34] Speaker 3: But my man ain't been to a game in like
[26:36] Speaker 3: 20 some odd years. So now you hopping back on, right? Like,
[26:40] Speaker 3: come on. Like you ain't been to, we ain't. Look,
[26:43] Speaker 3: these games on TV, we ain't seen you there. Like,
[26:45] Speaker 3: don't start now. You know what I'm saying? Like, don't
[26:48] Speaker 3: start now. Like, we talked about the absentee father. Like,
[26:51] Speaker 3: that's like the absentee father who ain't been there, but
[26:53] Speaker 3: now he found out his son got on, and now
[26:55] Speaker 3: he trying to get back in his son's life because
[26:57] Speaker 3: he need a positive male role model in his life.
[26:59] Speaker 1: Now you ain't been there.
[27:01] Speaker 3: The Knicks have been the Antoine Fishers of the damn NBA,
[27:05] Speaker 3: and now you trying to get back.
[27:06] Speaker 1: In their life. What you.
[27:10] Speaker 2: How come you don't want me, man?
[27:12] Speaker 3: I'm still standing.
[27:16] Speaker 2: I don't... I think the part that confuses me about
[27:20] Speaker 2: this is Trump normally does not go to what I
[27:25] Speaker 2: would term away games, right? Trump is trying to go
[27:30] Speaker 2: to NFL games where they doing something for the veterans.
[27:34] Speaker 2: Trump trying to go down there to them SEC games.
[27:37] Speaker 2: Trump is understandably... He wants to go places where he
[27:42] Speaker 2: feel like people like him. I don't think that room
[27:49] Speaker 2: is the room that he wants to go in. Like
[27:54] Speaker 2: that's going to be loud, throaty boos.
[28:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, it is.
[28:01] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[28:01] Speaker 3: Maybe he can go with his J6 quarterback. Maybe they
[28:05] Speaker 3: can go together. I mean, that's how you, if you
[28:08] Speaker 3: want to appeal to New York fans, just like have
[28:11] Speaker 3: Jackson come with him.
[28:12] Speaker 2: The tone of your voice. We've been texting through that
[28:15] Speaker 2: football season too. You was a little excited. Felt like
[28:18] Speaker 2: you had a quarterback, somebody that you could believe in.
[28:21] Speaker 2: Now all of a sudden, no expression on your face, man.
[28:24] Speaker 2: What happened? What's up? What's up with you, man? What's
[28:25] Speaker 2: up with you, folks?
[28:26] Speaker 3: Look, I'm going to try to be my best to
[28:27] Speaker 3: be an active NFL player in the locker room. It's like, hey,
[28:30] Speaker 3: as long as you can help my team win, we're
[28:32] Speaker 3: going to ride it out. But I don't got to
[28:34] Speaker 3: agree with the stuff you do outside the locker room.
[28:36] Speaker 1: How's that?
[28:39] Speaker 3: But yeah, but to your point, it's going to be
[28:42] Speaker 3: interesting to see how this goes down if Trump does
[28:45] Speaker 3: come to one of these home games. Because like you said,
[28:47] Speaker 3: it's a little bit different in the NFL. It's different
[28:49] Speaker 3: going to these SEC football games. The NBA and the
[28:52] Speaker 3: NBA fans, they don't kick it the same way. And
[28:54] Speaker 3: it's going to be interesting. And of course, he's going
[28:56] Speaker 3: to want to be seen. So I don't know if
[28:57] Speaker 3: that's a court side seat or what. Because also, too,
[29:00] Speaker 3: at these venues, he's in a a suite somewhere, an NBA.
[29:04] Speaker 3: Is he going to be courtside?
[29:05] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[29:06] Speaker 3: I don't want that to overshadow what we've been able
[29:11] Speaker 3: to see from this team and this experience and just
[29:14] Speaker 3: the overall joy that this run has brought to New
[29:18] Speaker 3: York and you being there, beating New York and New
[29:21] Speaker 3: York Knicks fans. It seems bigger than just somebody trying
[29:25] Speaker 3: to capitalize on the moment right now.
[29:28] Speaker 1: I just like it.
[29:29] Speaker 2: I can't believe that he wants to go there. I
[29:32] Speaker 2: will say this, though. Have you seen this? That between
[29:36] Speaker 2: June 25th and July 10th, they are having... what they
[29:40] Speaker 2: call the Great American State Fair on the National Mall
[29:47] Speaker 2: in Washington, D.C. And they sent out a flyer with, well,
[29:53] Speaker 2: flyers on Twitter, with some of the talent and Some
[29:57] Speaker 2: of this talent has already said that they ain't got
[30:00] Speaker 2: nothing to do with this. They were invited to it
[30:03] Speaker 2: under different pretenses, but now it's being called Trump-backed. But
[30:07] Speaker 2: the featured performers that are on this are Martina McBride.
[30:11] Speaker 2: I'm aware of her, but I don't know none of
[30:13] Speaker 2: her songs. I can only assume that she has one
[30:16] Speaker 2: or two songs. You may be asking why. I'll give
[30:18] Speaker 2: you the rest of the bill. Young MC, who has
[30:22] Speaker 2: said that he is not showing up, but that's one
[30:24] Speaker 2: or two songs, right? Like everybody on this list, it
[30:28] Speaker 2: sounded like halftime at an NBA game. CNC Music Factory,
[30:33] Speaker 2: one or two songs. That boy from CNC Music Factory,
[30:37] Speaker 2: he cut that ponytail and he looks swole as hell
[30:39] Speaker 2: in this picture, by the way. Vanilla Ice, one or
[30:44] Speaker 2: two songs. Go Ninja, go Ninja, go. Milli Vanilli, but
[30:52] Speaker 2: it's just the one that's left.
[30:54] Speaker 1: We just got Milli.
[30:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, or Vanilli. You could convince me either way. The Commodores, who, like,
[31:02] Speaker 2: not to be confused with Lotta Richie, and I don't
[31:06] Speaker 2: know if this picture of the Commodores would tie into
[31:09] Speaker 2: a picture of the Commodores from, say, 1983. I don't
[31:12] Speaker 2: know what version of the Commodores. They have more than
[31:15] Speaker 2: one or two songs, but, you know, no Lotta Richie.
[31:18] Speaker 2: Morris Day of the Time, and Morris already said he
[31:21] Speaker 2: ain't going to be there.
[31:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, I did see that. Morris was like, nah, this
[31:24] Speaker 1: ain't me. Hello, Ryder.
[31:25] Speaker 2: I feel like one or two songs.
[31:28] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:29] Speaker 2: I know he has more, but I sure ain't heard them.
[31:31] Speaker 2: And Bret Michaels, and I don't know how familiar you
[31:33] Speaker 2: are with Poison, but they're really bad. They're really, really bad.
[31:40] Speaker 2: So all these people are one or two songs. And
[31:43] Speaker 2: I feel like what happened here is that Trump done
[31:46] Speaker 2: got so many miles out of this YMCA that he's
[31:49] Speaker 2: just like, can we get the one or two hit
[31:52] Speaker 2: wonders of the whole world to come out here? I
[31:57] Speaker 2: can't imagine getting on a plane to go see no
[32:00] Speaker 2: goddamn Milli or Vanilli.
[32:07] Speaker 3: Look, For who?
[32:09] Speaker 1: For what?
[32:11] Speaker 2: This is the thing with Milli Vanilli. You and I
[32:15] Speaker 2: are of age, right? Do you in real time remember
[32:22] Speaker 2: the controversy when they found out that they was lip syncing?
[32:26] Speaker 1: I remember it was a thing.
[32:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because it's right at the turnover age, right?
[32:31] Speaker 2: Our two-year age difference, that's in the two years that matters, right?
[32:38] Speaker 3: For me, it was more than the controversy itself. It
[32:41] Speaker 3: was the jokes that came from the controversy. It was
[32:43] Speaker 3: the Arsenio Hall. It was the In Living Color skits.
[32:46] Speaker 3: For me, that's what it was more about.
[32:48] Speaker 2: They were such a big deal when that happened. Like,
[32:51] Speaker 2: they won Best New Artist at the Grammys, everything else.
[32:54] Speaker 2: They were such a big deal. I'll never forget. They
[32:55] Speaker 2: came to Houston, and they had them on the radio,
[32:58] Speaker 2: and it was so funny, because Houston was at its
[33:00] Speaker 2: country-ass best, because everybody was calling and being like, hello?
[33:04] Speaker 2: Is this Millie? Or is this Vanilli? They both there,
[33:06] Speaker 2: and they would be like, no, it's Rob and Fobb.
[33:09] Speaker 2: So which one is Millie and which one is Vanilli?
[33:12] Speaker 2: I don't know how people just decided that it couldn't
[33:15] Speaker 2: just be the name of the group, that they had
[33:17] Speaker 2: to be Millie and Vanilli. Anyway, I don't know the
[33:21] Speaker 2: last time anybody listened to Millie Vanilli, but that shit sucks.
[33:25] Speaker 2: I can't believe that that was ever a thing. And
[33:28] Speaker 2: not only does it suck, the idea that those vocals
[33:33] Speaker 2: required you to get somebody else to sing them Like,
[33:39] Speaker 2: they didn't even pay a lot of money for it. Like,
[33:41] Speaker 2: this isn't like Martha Washington. She was singing on the
[33:44] Speaker 2: CSE Music Factory stuff, right? She could really, really sing.
[33:47] Speaker 2: They just thought she was too big, so they didn't
[33:48] Speaker 2: want to put her out there into visuals. These motherfuckers
[33:52] Speaker 2: that were singing and pretending to be Milli Vanilli, I
[33:54] Speaker 2: would want to go get some singers to pretend to
[33:56] Speaker 2: be better than that.
[34:01] Speaker 3: But I think that also speaks to what, as fans,
[34:05] Speaker 3: as listeners, we were able to accept at the time.
[34:08] Speaker 3: Because you mentioned, I'm glad you brought up the CNC
[34:10] Speaker 3: music factor. We accepted that shit too. Knowing we looked
[34:12] Speaker 3: at the video and saw the skinny girl singing in
[34:14] Speaker 3: the video. Knowing that wasn't her. Knowing at the same time,
[34:17] Speaker 3: think about it. We were listening to Snap and Power, right?
[34:20] Speaker 1: I got the Power.
[34:21] Speaker 3: We knew the girl in the video wasn't singing that shit.
[34:23] Speaker 3: singing those songs, but we accepted it. It was the
[34:25] Speaker 3: same deal with Milli Villi. It was all the same.
[34:27] Speaker 3: Milli Vanilli, Snap, C & C Music Factory. It was
[34:30] Speaker 3: all the same. It was like, think about it. Music
[34:33] Speaker 3: very much, and I'll make this correlation all the time,
[34:34] Speaker 3: music is professional wrestling. And that's exactly what it was.
[34:37] Speaker 3: We were able to, we just accepted it.
[34:40] Speaker 1: It was like, hey, just don't ask questions, just accept it. Like,
[34:42] Speaker 1: I got the power. Great, go right ahead.
[34:44] Speaker 2: But with Milli Vanilli, people did not. People felt like
[34:47] Speaker 2: they were truly betrayed.
[34:50] Speaker 1: And again.
[34:51] Speaker 2: this was not substantial music. Like there was not a
[34:56] Speaker 2: depth to what it is that.
[34:58] Speaker 1: They were doing. Come on, boy, you weren't blaming it
[34:59] Speaker 1: on the Rain Man.
[35:01] Speaker 2: That's the closest one. That is the closest thing they
[35:04] Speaker 2: had to a song that was like, okay, but baby,
[35:08] Speaker 2: don't you lose my number. It was like, yo, Phil
[35:14] Speaker 2: Collins just did a Don't Lose My Number song two
[35:16] Speaker 2: years ago and that thing was jamming. This does not jam.
[35:21] Speaker 2: I just can't imagine they sent that tape in and
[35:23] Speaker 2: the label was like, yo, this is really good, but
[35:26] Speaker 2: we got to get the right faces on this. And
[35:29] Speaker 2: then they just go get these dudes with the extensions.
[35:31] Speaker 2: Cause that was that, that was that era with them
[35:33] Speaker 2: and Terrence Trent Darby and all of these cats, like
[35:36] Speaker 2: where the eighties was wild, man. Like to be such
[35:40] Speaker 2: a homophobic time, cats were really free in the choices
[35:43] Speaker 2: they was making.
[35:44] Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that was, yeah.
[35:45] Speaker 3: And two, you have to think about it too. And
[35:47] Speaker 3: that goes back to, you know, folks ripping off the
[35:51] Speaker 3: influence and the fluidity and the imaging.
[35:54] Speaker 1: Of a Prince, you know? and trying to be Prince-like.
[35:58] Speaker 3: We can't do what Prince does, but maybe we can
[36:00] Speaker 3: take some elements of what Prince does, slap it on
[36:03] Speaker 3: this artist, get somebody else to sing for him, and
[36:05] Speaker 3: there we go. But I ask you, I see very
[36:09] Speaker 3: much similar correlations to what happens with music now, where
[36:13] Speaker 3: because the expectations are not that these artists are going
[36:16] Speaker 3: to put out great albums or whatever, it's like.
[36:18] Speaker 1: What can we do to go viral?
[36:20] Speaker 3: In the same way with those artists back then, what
[36:22] Speaker 3: can we do to get a number one hit or
[36:23] Speaker 3: smash it It's the same way now. It's like, you
[36:26] Speaker 3: look at now, they're starting to have concerts now for these,
[36:29] Speaker 3: because the big thing this year was This is like
[36:32] Speaker 3: 2026 is the new 2016. So with that, you had
[36:35] Speaker 3: all of these one hit wonders from, you know, from
[36:38] Speaker 3: Whippin and Nene and all of that stuff from 10
[36:40] Speaker 3: years ago.
[36:41] Speaker 1: And it's the same thing.
[36:42] Speaker 3: You got a bunch of these folks, even within the
[36:44] Speaker 3: last decade now, there's just a bunch of I'm not
[36:46] Speaker 3: even going to say one hit one. It's just a
[36:48] Speaker 3: bunch of folks who got viral and then and they
[36:51] Speaker 3: didn't even have their 15 minutes of fame. Literally, it
[36:53] Speaker 3: was like, hey, one week and hey, we on to
[36:56] Speaker 3: the next one.
[36:57] Speaker 2: Well, is anybody going to see them in concert? Because
[36:59] Speaker 2: concert tickets done got so ridiculous. Have you seen this thing?
[37:02] Speaker 2: This is the best lie I've seen about all these
[37:04] Speaker 2: people canceling these concerts because they suffer for what they
[37:06] Speaker 2: call blue dot fever. Yeah. Where you go to the
[37:10] Speaker 2: website and you go to get tickets and it's all
[37:12] Speaker 2: them blue dots. Blue dot fever rampant, man. I think
[37:16] Speaker 2: I got one concert I'm going to see, man, because
[37:18] Speaker 2: people charging too much money, man. I'm trying to go
[37:21] Speaker 2: to the U.S. Open for tennis, dawg. I'm going to
[37:23] Speaker 2: be up there with Bob Uecker, baby. I can't pay
[37:25] Speaker 2: that money to be sitting down there, pay $ 1, 000 for
[37:27] Speaker 2: no first round.
[37:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, my daughter Shannon, she's very much in the concert
[37:33] Speaker 3: age at 17.
[37:35] Speaker 2: 17.
[37:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
[37:38] Speaker 3: So, of course, she did the Beyonce thing recently and
[37:43] Speaker 3: wanted to do Chris Brown. Chris Brown and Usher, I
[37:45] Speaker 3: think this summer, I think her and Braylon are probably
[37:47] Speaker 3: going to make their way to But we're going to look,
[37:50] Speaker 3: we're going to the cheapest. We're going to the Syracuse
[37:51] Speaker 3: concert because they get too expensive in MetLife. So we're
[37:54] Speaker 3: going to Syracuse.
[37:56] Speaker 2: Dude, everywhere is too expensive, man. I told you I
[37:58] Speaker 2: had to get back with the people at these concerts, man.
[38:01] Speaker 2: When I was like really riding high, baby, I was down.
[38:03] Speaker 2: I was riding high and the prices hadn't jumped up
[38:05] Speaker 2: so much. I was right up close to everybody. Now
[38:08] Speaker 2: I'm like, wow, you can see the whole screen from
[38:11] Speaker 2: back here. This is how the concert was truly intended
[38:17] Speaker 2: to be appreciated.
[38:19] Speaker 3: Like the fact that you in the seats where you
[38:20] Speaker 3: can see the house band.
[38:22] Speaker 2: That's right.
[38:23] Speaker 1: Oh, they jamming back there. That's right.
[38:25] Speaker 2: That's right, man. I had to step it back, man.
[38:27] Speaker 2: Like I had a couple of things where I was
[38:28] Speaker 2: just like, I'm not paying the price to get down there.
[38:30] Speaker 2: And I stepped back and I had to be honest, man.
[38:32] Speaker 2: It was pretty cool back there. You know what I'm saying?
[38:34] Speaker 2: It's sound to say. That's what I made it for.
[38:38] Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I went to the U.S. Open last year, boy.
[38:40] Speaker 2: I was up there, dog. But you know what? I
[38:42] Speaker 2: could see if the ball was in and out. You
[38:44] Speaker 2: know what I'm saying? It didn't feel as different.
[38:48] Speaker 3: All right. I got another question for you, too, since
[38:50] Speaker 3: we're talking these new dudes, right?
[38:53] Speaker 1: Getting back to sports.
[38:57] Speaker 3: How am I supposed to feel about how the Oklahoma
[39:00] Speaker 3: City Thunder get down, bro?
[39:02] Speaker 1: Because I've been.
[39:03] Speaker 3: I've been struggling with this. I really have.
[39:06] Speaker 2: Channing, you haven't struggled at all. You've been calling them
[39:09] Speaker 2: dorks for over a year.
[39:10] Speaker 3: See, that's the thing. I'm trying to be better, bro.
[39:14] Speaker 3: I'm trying.
[39:15] Speaker 2: I know, but I don't know why you thought I
[39:17] Speaker 2: was going to assist you on this. I got your
[39:20] Speaker 2: receipts on this. You're just like, I can't get with
[39:23] Speaker 2: these dorks, man.
[39:25] Speaker 3: Exactly.
[39:25] Speaker 1: That's why I'm coming to you now.
[39:28] Speaker 3: I'm trying to be a better person, be a better
[39:31] Speaker 3: role model, be a better father for my kids.
[39:34] Speaker 1: And like, hey, I just.
[39:36] Speaker 3: Got to accept everybody for their differences. And how they
[39:39] Speaker 3: get down is how they get down.
[39:40] Speaker 1: I can't do it.
[39:41] Speaker 2: They the Oklahoma City Blue Devils. Now, once I say
[39:44] Speaker 2: it like that, don't you feel a little better about
[39:46] Speaker 2: staying entrenched on your principles?
[39:48] Speaker 3: I'm just.
[39:49] Speaker 1: I'm just waiting for them to slap the floor.
[39:51] Speaker 3: Like, I'm just waiting for Luke Dort or Kacen Wallace
[39:54] Speaker 3: to slap the floor on defense.
[39:56] Speaker 1: I mean, they got Jeremy Kane. He know how to
[39:58] Speaker 1: do it.
[39:59] Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Yeah, he's a double devil. He's the
[40:04] Speaker 2: one where they're like, he's the cat I try to like.
[40:09] Speaker 2: And it just becomes incredibly difficult because it's all of it.
[40:13] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? It's the Drake thing. It's
[40:17] Speaker 2: like his clear affection for musicals. I appreciate though that
[40:22] Speaker 2: he go hard on the court, right? Like once I
[40:25] Speaker 2: saw what his off the court get down was, I
[40:27] Speaker 2: should have immediately known he must be a beast on
[40:28] Speaker 2: the court because that's the only way that you can
[40:30] Speaker 2: get away with this. But the way that he just
[40:32] Speaker 2: completely rides for Drake, like I'm friends with some OV hoes.
[40:37] Speaker 2: So I need to be kind of careful in the
[40:39] Speaker 2: way that I look at it. But at the same time,
[40:41] Speaker 2: they make it very difficult for me. Like how am
[40:43] Speaker 2: I supposed to tell other people that you okay? You
[40:47] Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like, how am I supposed to
[40:49] Speaker 2: tell other people you cool and you an OV hoe?
[40:52] Speaker 2: And he, Jerry McCain, is an OV hoe and then
[40:55] Speaker 2: everything else. That's the one that's difficult. But now he
[40:58] Speaker 2: played for the Devils. And so it's like, cool, I
[41:00] Speaker 2: didn't even got to think about this no more. I'm
[41:01] Speaker 2: just kind of out on all of y'all right now.
[41:04] Speaker 1: Right. And it should be celebrated.
[41:07] Speaker 3: Like, it's like all the things that they say is
[41:11] Speaker 3: right with sports and they like each other and they
[41:14] Speaker 3: genuinely like each other on and off the court. unselfishness,
[41:17] Speaker 3: next man up, all the cliches, all the, you know,
[41:20] Speaker 3: get rid, all the cliches that you hear. And it's
[41:22] Speaker 3: like all the stuff that should be celebrated, but it's
[41:24] Speaker 3: something about, I just can't, I can't quite.
[41:28] Speaker 2: Just don't, just don't.
[41:30] Speaker 3: And I'm trying not to even harp on the unethical basketball,
[41:33] Speaker 3: but it's some, like it's, it's honestly, um, it's a
[41:37] Speaker 3: level of punk shit that goes on with, with the
[41:39] Speaker 3: style of play. Like it should be focusing on how
[41:42] Speaker 3: dope SJ is as an offensive player or the fact
[41:44] Speaker 3: that defensively they can put the clamps down on anybody
[41:47] Speaker 3: that that's what we should be talking about, but it's
[41:49] Speaker 3: hard to do. So when you see some of the
[41:51] Speaker 3: stuff that they'd be doing, like I get it, all
[41:53] Speaker 3: great players draw fouls.
[41:55] Speaker 1: SGA does the same. That's great.
[41:56] Speaker 3: But some of the stuff he does when landing and
[41:58] Speaker 3: trying to, and trying to always land on the opponent,
[42:01] Speaker 3: the defenders foot, so he can get the flagrant foul.
[42:03] Speaker 3: Like that's, That's not a natural basketball motion.
[42:06] Speaker 1: And I get it. Maybe you're usurping the rules or
[42:07] Speaker 1: whatever the case, but it's like, like, Oh, like I
[42:10] Speaker 1: get it.
[42:10] Speaker 3: It's recreational basketball, but 99% of the stuff that they
[42:13] Speaker 3: get away with, get down with wouldn't be called and
[42:16] Speaker 3: pick up and get your ass whooped on the, on the,
[42:18] Speaker 3: in the blacktop.
[42:18] Speaker 1: I'm just being honest with you. I'm just, I'm just
[42:21] Speaker 1: keeping it above.
[42:22] Speaker 3: And I get it.
[42:23] Speaker 1: It's two different, it's two different sports, but maybe that's it.
[42:26] Speaker 1: But I'm trying, bro. I'm trying to, I'm trying to
[42:29] Speaker 1: appreciate it.
[42:30] Speaker 3: Cause I'm gonna tell you this right now, but I
[42:32] Speaker 3: said this to my wife today, look, If the Thunder
[42:34] Speaker 3: get to the NBA Finals, there's going to be some
[42:36] Speaker 3: godly things that's going to be said about that Oklahoma
[42:38] Speaker 3: City Thunder squad coming from me watching the Knicks.
[42:40] Speaker 1: I'm going to lean in the camera. I'm going to
[42:42] Speaker 1: tell you this right now, bro.
[42:43] Speaker 3: If they play the Knicks, there's going to be some
[42:45] Speaker 3: nasty stuff that I'm going to be saying about these boys.
[42:47] Speaker 1: I'm going to just let you know that right now.
[42:48] Speaker 2: I kind of want to come to the house and watch,
[42:50] Speaker 2: to be honest. If it was just a little bit closer,
[42:53] Speaker 2: I'd have to watch myself. Let me ask you this, though.
[42:55] Speaker 2: The Thunder got a former Knick, Isaiah Hartenstein. And I
[42:58] Speaker 2: listened to how loud the ovation is when he come
[43:01] Speaker 2: into the games at Oklahoma City. And I have one
[43:03] Speaker 2: question for you. You think they know?
[43:06] Speaker 1: No, that's Isaiah. That's Isaiah.
[43:09] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[43:09] Speaker 1: Look, for the Oklahoma City fans, that's Isaiah. That's Isaiah.
[43:15] Speaker 2: I think they leading in on the Hartenstein. Isaiah might
[43:17] Speaker 2: get them a little too close to the truth.
[43:19] Speaker 1: That's Isaiah Hartenstein.
[43:21] Speaker 3: But for us that know, for us that know when
[43:24] Speaker 3: he was in New York, that's Zay.
[43:26] Speaker 1: That's Zay.
[43:27] Speaker 3: I bet you the team don't even call him Zay. Look,
[43:30] Speaker 3: he left Zay. When he left New York, he left
[43:32] Speaker 3: Zay there.
[43:33] Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. He keep this up and
[43:35] Speaker 2: he keep it quiet and don't make a big deal
[43:37] Speaker 2: about it. They'll put his jersey up there right next
[43:39] Speaker 2: to Nick Collison's. If he just lay.
[43:45] Speaker 4: Low, he.
[43:47] Speaker 1: All the grit and determination, huh?
[43:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's like, look, man, I don't need
[43:52] Speaker 2: to talk about it anymore. He's already said it. But
[43:54] Speaker 2: I heard the way they was clapping. I don't think
[43:56] Speaker 2: they know. I've been watching basketball for a long time.
[43:59] Speaker 2: I know what it is. They clap for him like
[44:00] Speaker 2: he check.
[44:03] Speaker 3: And that's the thing, too.
[44:05] Speaker 1: It's like, You hear Chet talk still to this day.
[44:09] Speaker 2: Oh, my God. I tell you this, though. Chet, Chet,
[44:13] Speaker 2: Vic gonna keep destroying Chet like he has, and Chet
[44:15] Speaker 2: gonna come back here. Chet gonna come out here like
[44:17] Speaker 2: Travis Kelsey, gonna bring his ass right back home. Like,
[44:21] Speaker 2: I feel like Chet Chudow, he gonna ride this out, like,
[44:23] Speaker 2: all the way. Eminem, the only one that ain't really
[44:25] Speaker 2: let us down when it all came back down to it.
[44:28] Speaker 2: But all the rest of them, you gotta pick up
[44:30] Speaker 2: a goddamn acoustic guitar, You know what I'm saying? Or
[44:33] Speaker 2: all that stuff, right? They go right back.
[44:36] Speaker 3: And it's always the tails, too. You know what happens first?
[44:38] Speaker 3: They get a different haircut. Like, they get a different haircut.
[44:42] Speaker 3: The beard gonna be a little different. It's not gonna
[44:44] Speaker 3: be as sharp. It's gonna be a different beard. Might
[44:46] Speaker 3: even cut the beard off. It's gonna be a different haircut.
[44:48] Speaker 3: Right now, Chet's still rocking a mohawk, but they're gonna
[44:51] Speaker 3: put some product in it.
[44:52] Speaker 1: A little gel to differentiate from what it used to
[44:55] Speaker 1: look like.
[44:56] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[44:56] Speaker 2: But he might be true to it, though.
[45:00] Speaker 1: Look, I hope so, because I'm not going to lie,
[45:02] Speaker 1: I was disappointed.
[45:03] Speaker 3: Once Travis Kelsey left and got rid of the fade,
[45:06] Speaker 3: then you knew what time it was.
[45:08] Speaker 2: You went on home, huh? He didn't just go home.
[45:11] Speaker 2: He went home with the whitest woman in America. After
[45:16] Speaker 2: we had seen his movies, he was like, no, I
[45:19] Speaker 2: got to take it all the way. All the way.
[45:24] Speaker 2: And she made you sign a prenup.
[45:28] Speaker 3: It's like Travis It's like Travis Kelsey went through an intervention, though. Yes.
[45:33] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[45:34] Speaker 2: Hey, hey, hey, hey, enough. Enough. Okay.
[45:39] Speaker 3: Like, look, you can keep smoking the weed, but the
[45:42] Speaker 3: fade got to go. No matter how hard I try,
[45:47] Speaker 3: I still love you. Had to go.
[45:55] Speaker 2: Add to go. Hey, last thing before we get out
[45:57] Speaker 2: of here. Would you rather see the Thunder or the Spurs?
[46:02] Speaker 3: I want to see Wemby. I want to see Wemby
[46:05] Speaker 3: on that stage. I want to see Wemby on that stage.
[46:09] Speaker 3: I think it'd be great as an NBA fan. I
[46:11] Speaker 3: think it'd be great to see him on that stage.
[46:13] Speaker 3: I think I feel better about the Knicks' chances now
[46:17] Speaker 3: than I did maybe three weeks ago against either of
[46:19] Speaker 3: these teams.
[46:20] Speaker 1: I think it'd be a good series. I don't think
[46:23] Speaker 1: It's going to be looked at as the Western Conference.
[46:24] Speaker 3: Finals being the de facto NBA Finals like people thought
[46:28] Speaker 3: a week ago.
[46:29] Speaker 1: So I think it'll be a good series either way.
[46:31] Speaker 1: But I would love to see Wembley on that stage, man.
[46:33] Speaker 2: Hey, I'm going to do one last thing while I
[46:35] Speaker 2: got you here as we got all our friends of
[46:36] Speaker 2: the program together. Today is Joel Anderson's birthday. And he
[46:42] Speaker 2: says that his birthday isn't a big deal. He don't
[46:44] Speaker 2: even do nothing. So I think we all need to
[46:46] Speaker 2: just tell Joel happy birthday. Let's see if he pick
[46:49] Speaker 2: up the phone. And if he don't, we'll just edit
[46:57] Speaker 2: it out. This motherfucker just sent me a text one
[47:01] Speaker 2: minute ago. I know he see this ringing. Your call
[47:14] Speaker 2: has been forwarded to- Fuck your old birthday. You know
[47:21] Speaker 2: what I'm saying?
[47:21] Speaker 3: You should keep that in for Joe's birthday.
[47:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, we know. We know he trying to spread in
[47:28] Speaker 2: some cheer. You know what I'm saying? Well, happy birthday, Joe.
[47:33] Speaker 2: Everybody go tell Joe happy birthday because I don't like
[47:36] Speaker 2: him acting like his birthday don't matter. So he needs
[47:38] Speaker 2: to hear how much we love a hater around these parts.
[47:41] Speaker 2: And not just any hater, just that one. The rest
[47:43] Speaker 2: of them we already so much fuck with. But Joe,
[47:45] Speaker 2: that's our hater. There we go. That's our hater. That's
[47:50] Speaker 2: Shannon Penn. Check him out. Afternoons ESPN Radio with Freddie
[47:55] Speaker 2: and Harry. My brother, I appreciate you.
[47:58] Speaker 3: I'm going to say some ungodly things about the Thunder
[48:00] Speaker 3: if they win this series.
[48:02] Speaker 2: I think you're going to say ungodly things about them
[48:03] Speaker 2: win or lose.
[48:05] Speaker 1: Well, that is true.
