[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
[0:23] Speaker 1: have a guest join us, coming to us live from
[0:26] Speaker 1: San Antonio, East Fresno's own Bruce Bowen.
[0:31] Speaker 2: What's going on?
[0:32] Speaker 3: You know what? I'm not going to let you do it.
[0:34] Speaker 3: Starting off with East Fresno. You know I'm from West Fresno.
[0:37] Speaker 3: It's West, my bad. No, you did that on purpose, man.
[0:40] Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
[0:41] Speaker 2: See, this time I did do it on purpose.
[0:42] Speaker 3: That's what you do. I read the comments. People, all
[0:46] Speaker 3: they want to do is hear us go back and forth.
[0:48] Speaker 3: They want to hear me talk about, you know, I'm
[0:51] Speaker 3: going to get you and all that stuff. But you
[0:54] Speaker 3: know it's West Fresno.
[0:55] Speaker 4: But you know what?
[0:55] Speaker 1: What makes it so bad is I was like, I
[0:57] Speaker 1: messed it up last time, but I'm not going to mess.
[0:59] Speaker 2: It up again. And then I came out here and
[1:02] Speaker 2: I messed it up again.
[1:03] Speaker 3: That's what we doing.
[1:04] Speaker 4: Yes.
[1:05] Speaker 1: Cause I'm happy to see you.
[1:10] Speaker 3: Right.
[1:10] Speaker 2: This is always a good time. But we got you
[1:13] Speaker 2: back here.
[1:14] Speaker 3: I got, look here. I got this.
[1:16] Speaker 2: Okay.
[1:16] Speaker 3: Okay. This is my calming teeth.
[1:18] Speaker 2: That's what you need.
[1:19] Speaker 3: My calming teeth. Only when I deal with you.
[1:23] Speaker 1: See, here's the worst thing about it, man. Bruce doing this,
[1:25] Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, when I'm
[1:27] Speaker 1: trying to get Bruce, it ain't going to be about
[1:28] Speaker 1: what side of Fresno. It's all the same Fresno to me.
[1:30] Speaker 2: I don't know no better. You know, like, well, I'm
[1:32] Speaker 2: going to get you. I'm going to get you. I
[1:34] Speaker 2: wanted to start off. Look, this is the thing.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Bruce Bowen, San Antonio Spurs legend, retired jersey. He was
[1:41] Speaker 1: nice enough to let somebody borrow it, but I bet
[1:44] Speaker 1: you ain't going to do that again, right? retired jersey
[1:47] Speaker 1: number 12 up there in the rafters it's been a
[1:50] Speaker 1: down few years for the spurs um it ain't down
[1:54] Speaker 1: no more man like like when you watch this team
[1:57] Speaker 1: what do you think because this is here's what i
[2:00] Speaker 1: think is interesting and is a little bit different is
[2:02] Speaker 1: the spurs had the luck of two superstars who were
[2:06] Speaker 1: perfectly built for san antonio right david robinson into tim
[2:10] Speaker 1: duncan and Victor is similar to them, but Victor got
[2:15] Speaker 1: a different kind of star power and wattage to him.
[2:18] Speaker 3: Right.
[2:19] Speaker 1: Like he's not he is of a much different personality
[2:22] Speaker 1: than those guys are. But it still feels like this
[2:25] Speaker 1: is San Antonio Spurs basketball.
[2:27] Speaker 2: Well, yes.
[2:28] Speaker 3: And to Victor's credit, I think San Antonio has been
[2:32] Speaker 3: blessed with, I think, great thinkers of the game, high IQ,
[2:37] Speaker 3: big men. Now, I've played with some big men that
[2:40] Speaker 3: that elevator didn't quite get to the penthouse level. But
[2:45] Speaker 3: to think about how they have gone about things, Victor
[2:49] Speaker 3: wanted to be here. Now, you think about this. A
[2:53] Speaker 3: guy that's able to go to an organization that has
[2:55] Speaker 3: had successful foundation players, why wouldn't you want to? But
[3:01] Speaker 3: on top of that, still staying true to who he
[3:04] Speaker 3: is as far as his evolution goes. and his IQ
[3:07] Speaker 3: to seek out knowledge in different places and not be
[3:11] Speaker 3: afraid to tap into some individual that may be monks.
[3:16] Speaker 3: Let me go spend some time in China to learn
[3:20] Speaker 3: different things about how I can center myself in this
[3:25] Speaker 3: great league that we're in. How can I seek knowledge
[3:29] Speaker 3: from some of the former players that big men would
[3:33] Speaker 3: never think about seeking knowledge from? Hey, Jamal Crawford, I
[3:37] Speaker 3: like how crafty you were with the basketball. Hey, can
[3:40] Speaker 3: you give me some time? Obviously, Hakeem allows you on.
[3:45] Speaker 3: But just to say that one thing about Tim and
[3:49] Speaker 3: David that I've always appreciated is how they've been comfortable
[3:54] Speaker 3: in their own skin. And that's what you see in Victor.
[3:57] Speaker 3: You see him comfortable in his own skin, but being
[4:00] Speaker 3: so much different from a standpoint of, certain things that
[4:04] Speaker 3: turn him on, certain things that turn him off. But
[4:07] Speaker 3: at the same time, he has that same IQ of
[4:13] Speaker 3: wanting to be a better version of himself.
[4:16] Speaker 1: Let me tell you, and I want to get back
[4:18] Speaker 1: to talking about current Spurs, but as you mentioned that,
[4:20] Speaker 1: it got me thinking about something.
[4:21] Speaker 2: I was talking to somebody about this the other day.
[4:25] Speaker 1: Because of one bad playoff series, I feel like we
[4:28] Speaker 1: have really slept on what David Robinson was like, like the.
[4:32] Speaker 2: High end of David Robinson.
[4:33] Speaker 1: Like even you, where you play with him after the
[4:35] Speaker 1: back injury, you go look at the advanced numbers. David
[4:38] Speaker 1: Robinson was still David Robinson just at 25 minutes a game.
[4:42] Speaker 3: You know, you talk about the first big man that
[4:45] Speaker 3: would beat guys up and down the floor. You know,
[4:49] Speaker 3: you look at his frame and this is what I
[4:51] Speaker 3: think Wimby had, had to deal with. People look at
[4:55] Speaker 3: his frame and say, ah, He can't handle this. He
[4:58] Speaker 3: can't handle that. But all of a sudden, what you
[5:00] Speaker 3: see on the floor with Wimby is something that's truly special.
[5:04] Speaker 3: But you're not accustomed to seeing that from somebody with
[5:07] Speaker 3: his build. David had that build. But more importantly, he
[5:14] Speaker 3: didn't allow the bigs to beat him up so much
[5:18] Speaker 3: because he learned how to utilize his strengths more than
[5:22] Speaker 3: anything else. So I have a big guy that wants
[5:25] Speaker 3: to guard me on the block. Dave would take him
[5:27] Speaker 3: out to that wing and catch and rip right through
[5:29] Speaker 3: him and get to the basket. At that moment with
[5:33] Speaker 3: him and Avery Johnson, how many guys were running the
[5:37] Speaker 3: floor like Wimby does and what Dave was able to do?
[5:40] Speaker 3: And they're just pointing at the rim. I mean, in
[5:43] Speaker 3: full transition mode, not one of those things where you
[5:46] Speaker 3: could see the lob coming, but a certain play in
[5:50] Speaker 3: transition where that becomes part of the weapons that you
[5:54] Speaker 3: use when it comes to your offensive game. Davis ability
[5:57] Speaker 3: to block shots and stay with wing players at that time.
[6:01] Speaker 3: It was something we never had seen before. So to
[6:04] Speaker 3: see him do it, I mean, only other slender guy
[6:07] Speaker 3: was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar that I can think of, or, or
[6:11] Speaker 3: Ralph Sampson, who was more, I think in the lines
[6:15] Speaker 3: of what Wimby is, but at another level and, and
[6:19] Speaker 3: less upset about being that guy. Um, Only say that
[6:24] Speaker 3: because it seemed like Ralph Samson was always fighting somebody.
[6:26] Speaker 2: Like, why you so mad at.
[6:29] Speaker 3: Me, brother? I mean, come on.
[6:31] Speaker 2: Ralph in the NBA finals.
[6:33] Speaker 1: Our guy, Howard Bryant, you know, he grew up as
[6:35] Speaker 1: a Celtics fan. He hated Ralph Samson so much.
[6:38] Speaker 2: So much.
[6:41] Speaker 3: But, you know, that's the beauty of this is that
[6:44] Speaker 3: Dave was not a guy that was, well, when I played,
[6:47] Speaker 3: I did this. That, you don't ever hear from Dave.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Dave was about what he could do to I think
[6:54] Speaker 3: more importantly, add to his longevity in the game. And
[6:59] Speaker 3: I played two years with him and it was interesting.
[7:02] Speaker 3: I had heard the yoga that he did. And so
[7:07] Speaker 3: I said, Dave, tell me about the yoga and what
[7:09] Speaker 3: it does for you. And Dave hopped into a position. Oh,
[7:14] Speaker 3: and I was like, you're right. And I'm saying to myself, like, man,
[7:18] Speaker 3: that looked like your abs really gotta be strong to
[7:22] Speaker 3: do that. You know, meaning, please don't ask me to
[7:25] Speaker 3: do it, Dave. But what he was doing, I think
[7:30] Speaker 3: he was ahead of time as far as the way
[7:32] Speaker 3: you have to take care of your body being that
[7:35] Speaker 3: size so that you don't wake up with knots in
[7:38] Speaker 3: your muscles and things of that nature. But he was
[7:42] Speaker 3: funny in how he did things as well. Dave, he
[7:45] Speaker 3: would just say, uh-uh, when you thought you were driving
[7:48] Speaker 3: in to get, oh, no, not that one. No, you
[7:51] Speaker 3: got to try that again. And it's just, it was
[7:54] Speaker 3: humorous to me. But at the same time, he was
[7:58] Speaker 3: sending a message that, hey, I may not talk trash
[8:01] Speaker 3: like these other folks, but I do have something to
[8:05] Speaker 3: say about whether you score or not. And so you
[8:08] Speaker 3: think about that and you look at me being able
[8:11] Speaker 3: to press up on guys, knowing that I had Dave
[8:14] Speaker 3: back there. And even Dave, at his final two years,
[8:19] Speaker 3: was still better than a whole lot of others that
[8:22] Speaker 3: were in A-prime. Yeah.
[8:24] Speaker 1: The thing that I find interesting between David and Victor
[8:26] Speaker 1: is Victor is a much ornery character. Like, Victor seems
[8:30] Speaker 1: to be, as my buddy Joel Anderson says, motivated by spite.
[8:36] Speaker 3: See, and that's the beauty of Dave. Dave's a strong,
[8:39] Speaker 3: devout Christian. And Dave would bless you, brother, for feeling
[8:43] Speaker 3: that way about me. And I'm still going to give
[8:46] Speaker 3: you 30 and 15. And whereas Victor, like, this is
[8:51] Speaker 3: the thing. I couldn't stand it when reporters with little
[8:57] Speaker 3: snide remarks, yeah, but you seem to walk up under
[9:00] Speaker 3: him while he was shooting. Can you believe that, Bomani?
[9:03] Speaker 3: They would say stuff like that on the low and
[9:06] Speaker 3: it bothered me and I couldn't do much about it
[9:10] Speaker 3: because I didn't have that intention of what they saw,
[9:15] Speaker 3: but they would immediately say things like, oh, he tried
[9:19] Speaker 3: to do that. He's a dirty guy. Now, that being said,
[9:23] Speaker 3: I heard that, but I didn't say anything to it.
[9:26] Speaker 3: Whereas Victor has heard all the folks talking about, ah,
[9:31] Speaker 3: just take him on the block. He can't do nothing
[9:35] Speaker 3: because all you have to do is be physical with him.
[9:37] Speaker 3: Draymond knew that that was the only, that was the
[9:41] Speaker 3: last line of defense he had on him is to
[9:44] Speaker 3: try to be physical with him. Two years ago, Victor
[9:47] Speaker 3: probably would have tussled with somebody trying to show how
[9:50] Speaker 3: strong he is. Now, He sets them up to utilize
[9:54] Speaker 3: their strength against them. And what happened when you press
[9:58] Speaker 3: up on him on that underneath out of bounds play
[10:01] Speaker 3: he spins and he's catching it for an and one
[10:04] Speaker 3: that's the ultimate get back in that particular moment as
[10:07] Speaker 3: far as i'm concerned.
[10:09] Speaker 1: Take that Now, how good are the rest of them dudes? That's,
[10:12] Speaker 1: I think, the most interesting question. Because, I mean, we
[10:15] Speaker 1: got a pretty decent idea about De'Aaron Fox, who I
[10:17] Speaker 1: think has done a good job of recognizing that, like,
[10:21] Speaker 1: you playing with the guy, right?
[10:24] Speaker 2: Like, don't lose track of what really matters. But he's
[10:28] Speaker 2: been good.
[10:29] Speaker 1: They got all these young dudes, but I feel like
[10:32] Speaker 1: they could win the West, but everybody got the same point,
[10:34] Speaker 1: and it's a fair one. They've never won anything, like
[10:36] Speaker 1: a single solitary playoff series.
[10:39] Speaker 3: And that's fair, Bomani. It really is. And that's always
[10:42] Speaker 3: been my thought process with this group prior to it
[10:45] Speaker 3: coming together quite like it is now. I always have
[10:48] Speaker 3: shared with people that you need experience. You need that
[10:52] Speaker 3: failure to teach you more than anything else. Case in point,
[10:57] Speaker 3: this last game against the New York Knicks, they had
[11:00] Speaker 3: 11-game win streak. And what stood out to me in
[11:04] Speaker 3: that little moment was... Okay, what happens to most is
[11:10] Speaker 3: when you get on a win streak, you become more
[11:13] Speaker 3: concerned with the W's than how you went about being
[11:17] Speaker 3: the best you could be and taking whatever happened. Now
[11:23] Speaker 3: on those win streaks, this is why coaches are so
[11:26] Speaker 3: thrilled when they come to an end. Now you will
[11:28] Speaker 3: start listening to me again. Now I can coach you
[11:31] Speaker 3: again because before I could coach you and we got
[11:34] Speaker 3: on a win streak, And then it became skipping steps
[11:38] Speaker 3: to get a W. We saw steps skipped in that game.
[11:42] Speaker 3: And in those steps that were skipped, I'm sure Mitch
[11:45] Speaker 3: was able to go back and film and say, hey, fellas,
[11:49] Speaker 3: look at this. Look at how we just tried to
[11:52] Speaker 3: get Wimby the ball in a rush and didn't really
[11:54] Speaker 3: take note of how he was being played and how
[11:58] Speaker 3: we could counter to maybe there's someone denying him. Those
[12:02] Speaker 3: are the little things that those lessons of losing a
[12:07] Speaker 3: win streak or losing a game you're able to learn from.
[12:11] Speaker 3: In the playoffs, it becomes more heightened. Now you see
[12:14] Speaker 3: so many things that only one that maybe have a
[12:17] Speaker 3: little bit of a playoff experience that I can think
[12:20] Speaker 3: of at the top of my head is Fox.
[12:23] Speaker 2: And Harrison.
[12:23] Speaker 3: Harrison Barnes. And Harrison Barnes, exactly. And what you have
[12:28] Speaker 3: in those two are so valuable. The things that they
[12:31] Speaker 3: can bring to the table are so valuable for a
[12:33] Speaker 3: guy who's excited. You know, Vassell, excited. Kelton Johnson, excited.
[12:40] Speaker 3: Being able to get to that point and feel like,
[12:45] Speaker 3: oh my goodness, this is what they're talking about. Because
[12:48] Speaker 3: I remember my first year in the NBA, I went to,
[12:54] Speaker 3: it was my second year, I believe it was, I
[12:57] Speaker 3: go to the Lakers, they're still at the forum, and
[12:59] Speaker 3: they're playing the Portland Trail Blazers. And that's when the big,
[13:04] Speaker 3: he was a tall, skinnier version, bouncy guy that went
[13:10] Speaker 3: to Iowa State. Coutinho, no, not Coutinho.
[13:13] Speaker 2: No, Kelvin Cato.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Kelvin Cato. When Shaq dunked on him, but you bring
[13:20] Speaker 3: up that clip, but when Shaq dunked on him, That
[13:23] Speaker 3: was a moment where Calvin Cato realized that his defensive
[13:28] Speaker 3: rotations needed to be a tenth of a second quicker.
[13:35] Speaker 3: The fact that he was rotating late because he's never
[13:39] Speaker 3: been in that environment and the way that Shaq stretched
[13:44] Speaker 3: out on him, I still think about this one. And
[13:48] Speaker 3: just the way it happened, I saw it coming. I'm like, uh-oh, uh-oh.
[13:52] Speaker 3: And boom, it happens. Also during that time, that's when J.R.
[13:56] Speaker 3: Ryder told the press, said, I own Eddie Jones. And
[14:01] Speaker 3: every time he scored, he would pull his jersey a
[14:04] Speaker 3: little bit like, I got heart, Eddie doesn't. And so
[14:08] Speaker 3: all these different things go on during the course of
[14:11] Speaker 3: playoffs where the game slows down and there's a focus
[14:15] Speaker 3: that happens. teams aren't coming up with new plays, but
[14:18] Speaker 3: it's about the execution of the plays that they have
[14:22] Speaker 3: where you're saying, oh my goodness, this is truly special. So,
[14:25] Speaker 3: you know, you look at being that it's Victor had
[14:30] Speaker 3: a rookie of the year and not Vassell, but....
[14:35] Speaker 2: Castle.
[14:36] Speaker 4: Castle.
[14:37] Speaker 3: What they have, Castle's ability to learn on the fly
[14:41] Speaker 3: because I look at Castle as far as his ability
[14:44] Speaker 3: to make the change in defense and I remember last year,
[14:47] Speaker 3: there were a couple of times he opened up a
[14:50] Speaker 3: little bit on certain guys and that gave them a
[14:52] Speaker 3: driving way. Now he's become more physical and he's starting
[14:55] Speaker 3: to really enforce his will on the defensive side, let
[14:59] Speaker 3: alone the offensive side. You look at Harper, what he's
[15:02] Speaker 3: able to do. We have so many different valuable options now. Now,
[15:08] Speaker 3: when it comes to playoff basketball, who's able to play
[15:12] Speaker 3: their role to a tee, who's able to understand how
[15:15] Speaker 3: important it is to follow a game plan and how
[15:19] Speaker 3: necessary it is to pay attention to detail. Those are
[15:23] Speaker 3: the things, those are the things that you learn during
[15:25] Speaker 3: the course of that time. But I feel like they
[15:28] Speaker 3: can win a series and learn from that series and
[15:33] Speaker 3: learn how more important things are because of that. It
[15:36] Speaker 3: doesn't happen often, but I think that they're capable of
[15:40] Speaker 3: doing that. All right.
[15:41] Speaker 2: If you had to pick somebody in the West right now, though,
[15:43] Speaker 2: which way are you going?
[15:45] Speaker 3: Well, I think it's hard. to not pick the champions,
[15:49] Speaker 3: especially when they're in first place. So it's always going
[15:53] Speaker 3: to be them. But I think even in the fact
[15:57] Speaker 3: that if Spurs and OKC meet up in the Western
[16:00] Speaker 3: Conference Finals, the only edge I would give OKC is
[16:05] Speaker 3: the fact that they've been there before.
[16:07] Speaker 2: Now, where are you on Denver?
[16:10] Speaker 1: Cause I still think they got the best play on Denver.
[16:13] Speaker 1: Cause I still feel like, oh, you're not here in Denver.
[16:15] Speaker 1: You're not here boy.
[16:16] Speaker 3: You know, it's just, it's, and I only have to
[16:18] Speaker 3: say this because they're missing the key component that you
[16:22] Speaker 3: never see. Right. You never see Jokic get out of character. And,
[16:30] Speaker 3: and what transpired in that, in that OKC game, I
[16:34] Speaker 3: look at it from a standpoint of, no, you're the three,
[16:38] Speaker 3: three time MVP. that can't happen to you. And I
[16:44] Speaker 3: know people are going to say, well, he's human and
[16:46] Speaker 3: he got to, sometimes you just have to. And I'm
[16:49] Speaker 3: just saying, as far as the edge of you having
[16:53] Speaker 3: something over someone else, you can never allow a moment
[16:56] Speaker 3: to happen where you're saying things like, oh man, I
[17:01] Speaker 3: lost my cool. And now everyone knows that I'm human.
[17:08] Speaker 3: And Because sometimes it's just that mental edge that you
[17:10] Speaker 3: have as an athlete, as a basketball player, football player,
[17:13] Speaker 3: whatever it is. That's where you keep your edge. Whereas
[17:16] Speaker 3: like a player like Kobe, he kept the edge on
[17:19] Speaker 3: a lot of guys because of the mental aspect of
[17:22] Speaker 3: not allowing them to ever feel like they got in.
[17:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, like this is.
[17:27] Speaker 1: I feel like Denver's got the they've done it before.
[17:29] Speaker 1: We talked about this the other day. It's like we
[17:31] Speaker 1: give Minnesota no credit for the fact that they've been
[17:33] Speaker 1: knocking on the door these last two years, right? I
[17:36] Speaker 1: don't think that they're champions, just to be clear, but
[17:38] Speaker 1: it is interesting. Anthony Edwards, he's like, I've seen all
[17:42] Speaker 1: my heroes, and I've taken them all down at least once.
[17:46] Speaker 4: Right?
[17:47] Speaker 2: Every single one of them. He's like, I had something
[17:51] Speaker 2: for all of them.
[17:52] Speaker 3: That's scary for... a team going up against him because
[17:58] Speaker 3: he can rally the troops, and there hasn't been many,
[18:04] Speaker 3: rallying the troops kind of like Kobe, kind of like MJ.
[18:11] Speaker 3: It was interesting to see their growth without Cat because
[18:15] Speaker 3: it becomes a different team. And yes, they're more wide open,
[18:20] Speaker 3: but at the same time, I know we give the
[18:23] Speaker 3: French boy a hard time down low, But he's still
[18:28] Speaker 3: able to get things done on the defensive side.
[18:30] Speaker 2: Right. He's a good player.
[18:34] Speaker 3: Yes. He's a good player. Maybe it's because Shaq keeps
[18:40] Speaker 3: talking about him so bad. It's because everybody.
[18:42] Speaker 1: I don't think any player in the history of the
[18:46] Speaker 1: NBA has ever been less respected in the course of
[18:50] Speaker 1: what will be a Hall of Fame career than Rudy Colbert.
[18:54] Speaker 3: You know... And again, when you think of Rudy Gobert,
[18:59] Speaker 3: do you ever think of highlights?
[19:01] Speaker 2: No.
[19:03] Speaker 3: I just saw the last one. Draymond Hattie. And it's
[19:07] Speaker 3: that picture of him. You didn't see him like, you
[19:12] Speaker 3: better get off me trying to choke me. It was like...
[19:17] Speaker 3: That's the part. But then you watch them in that
[19:24] Speaker 3: game in Denver. I'm watching them like, Rudy, why do
[19:30] Speaker 3: I feel this way? But again, it's part of the whole.
[19:35] Speaker 3: It's Shaq. It's the pictures that we see. It's the things.
[19:40] Speaker 3: It's the low lights that we see instead of the highlights.
[19:45] Speaker 3: And he is, so getting back to facing that, team
[19:50] Speaker 3: with a leader like, ooh, man, AD is just, he,
[19:58] Speaker 3: and I think what stands out about Anthony Edwards right
[20:01] Speaker 3: now is that whole confrontation with the coach. People made
[20:06] Speaker 3: more of it than they should have, but There's many
[20:09] Speaker 3: a times coaches are gonna say pass, hit the open man.
[20:12] Speaker 3: But to see his fire, like, no, I got this.
[20:18] Speaker 3: This is what I do. Yes, it is. But when
[20:22] Speaker 3: you have someone open, it's that moment with Michael Jordan
[20:27] Speaker 3: and Pax. And when Phil Jackson says, Michael, who's open?
[20:32] Speaker 3: And he says, Pax is open. Then get him the ball.
[20:37] Speaker 3: And next thing you know, in L.A., Michael does it once.
[20:41] Speaker 3: Michael does it a couple of times. But it's what
[20:45] Speaker 3: Michael created first and foremost that we understand what he's
[20:49] Speaker 3: able to do before he starts getting it to the
[20:52] Speaker 3: open guys. So I think this is what's scary about
[20:56] Speaker 3: Anthony Edwards is that what he's doing, as you said,
[21:00] Speaker 3: taking down everybody. When you see LeBron James, now listen
[21:03] Speaker 3: to LeBron at the All-Star game. Hey, man, I love
[21:07] Speaker 3: what I see in AD. I want him to keep going.
[21:10] Speaker 3: Now you got people that you've had on the hit list,
[21:14] Speaker 3: so to speak. Now they're giving you compliments like that? Ooh,
[21:19] Speaker 3: that's scary, Bomani. That's why you never heard me say
[21:22] Speaker 3: nothing positive other than the generic, He's a great competitor.
[21:27] Speaker 2: That's what he does.
[21:29] Speaker 3: You're not going to hear me praise no Vince Carter.
[21:34] Speaker 2: You and Vince.
[21:35] Speaker 3: You're not going to hear me praise no Ray Allen.
[21:38] Speaker 1: We wouldn't hear you praise Vince Carter because you just
[21:41] Speaker 1: not go praise.
[21:42] Speaker 2: We wouldn't hear you praise Vince Carter right now.
[21:45] Speaker 3: Sure. I think he was the most talented guy. He
[21:49] Speaker 3: just didn't have that. that other piece that was necessary
[21:53] Speaker 3: some people say the Wizard of Oz I like to
[21:55] Speaker 3: say the Wiz you know ease on down ease on
[21:59] Speaker 3: down the road what I love.
[22:02] Speaker 2: Here what I love here is that you were like
[22:04] Speaker 2: I will.
[22:05] Speaker 1: Compliment him knowing the whole way that in the tuck
[22:09] Speaker 1: you was coming right behind it but talk about that
[22:13] Speaker 1: man's ticker.
[22:15] Speaker 3: Well I'm on the right time right There's no better
[22:20] Speaker 3: time than the right time.
[22:25] Speaker 2: Like, I'd love to get your list because Vince is
[22:27] Speaker 2: the only one that I know.
[22:28] Speaker 1: Like, nobody excites you quite like Vince when it's time
[22:31] Speaker 1: to talk about what ain't.
[22:33] Speaker 3: Well, you know, Vince has some choice things to say.
[22:37] Speaker 3: And I just felt like in our time, Ray Allen,
[22:43] Speaker 3: he could have talked to me too. But Ray and
[22:45] Speaker 3: I were good. It's just, it was a spirit of competition. Whereas,
[22:51] Speaker 3: I look at what, and this is all jokes aside,
[22:56] Speaker 3: Vince was the most talented guy. Like, playing that position,
[23:02] Speaker 3: he had bounce. He could shoot the ball. It wasn't like,
[23:05] Speaker 3: back up, back up. He can't shoot. That wasn't the case.
[23:09] Speaker 3: Vince got kicked out of a game with me, and
[23:12] Speaker 3: he had, like, 38 points. Like, I remember Manu in
[23:16] Speaker 3: the locker room right after the game said, Bruce, I
[23:19] Speaker 3: don't care what you say. You could talk about my mama.
[23:23] Speaker 3: I got 38 on you. I'm going for a career
[23:25] Speaker 3: high on you. But that was the difference in Manu and, say,
[23:30] Speaker 3: Vince Carter. Vince allowed those moments of emotions to get
[23:34] Speaker 3: to him. And who ends up winning? The cooler head
[23:39] Speaker 3: always wins. The cooler head always prevail. So I understood that.
[23:44] Speaker 3: So if I know how to push your buttons, then do-do-do-do-do-do.
[23:48] Speaker 3: Set to blow up in the third quarter at this point. Engage.
[23:54] Speaker 1: It's so fun to know that you weren't accidentally like this.
[24:03] Speaker 2: You were really doing the math.
[24:07] Speaker 3: I tell you, man, I would sit and listen. I
[24:11] Speaker 3: observe because I think I like to observe people and
[24:15] Speaker 3: how they do things. But I remember being at a
[24:19] Speaker 3: place and it's the summertime and this is a star
[24:24] Speaker 3: in the league. And he tells me, hey, you know,
[24:28] Speaker 3: every time we play, you kind of you hit me
[24:31] Speaker 3: a little bit after the shot. You're not supposed to
[24:33] Speaker 3: do that. I said, oh, I'm sorry. My bad. That's
[24:38] Speaker 3: my bad.
[24:39] Speaker 2: Very tough.
[24:40] Speaker 3: Oh, shoot. He don't like it when I.
[24:45] Speaker 4: Man, when these guys started saying all this stuff, I'm recording.
[24:50] Speaker 3: Like, really? Oh, my goodness. I'm getting back to the
[24:56] Speaker 3: crib like, yo, guess what I just found out? In
[25:01] Speaker 3: those moments, it's like, in the most adverse situation, fourth quarter,
[25:07] Speaker 3: let me see How true this is. Let me poke
[25:12] Speaker 3: the bear a little bit. Next thing you know, man,
[25:15] Speaker 3: I'm getting such a reaction. I didn't know that. But
[25:18] Speaker 3: I only knew because they shared that with me.
[25:22] Speaker 2: They just told you, huh?
[25:23] Speaker 3: So thank y'all.
[25:25] Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're going to find out what Bruce
[25:27] Speaker 1: Bowen thinks about what's going on in L.A.

[29:31] Speaker 2: with Bruce Bowen.
[29:33] Speaker 1: I guess this is what, I want to talk to
[29:35] Speaker 1: you about the Lakers, but I just had.
[29:36] Speaker 2: This moment where I thought about this.
[29:38] Speaker 1: The Clippers are the most interesting defense team that isn't
[29:41] Speaker 1: really winning.
[29:42] Speaker 2: No, no, no.
[29:43] Speaker 3: Why you got... You know I got fired for my
[29:45] Speaker 3: comments with the Clippers. You know that.
[29:48] Speaker 2: I thought you... I thought that you would let that go.
[29:52] Speaker 3: No, no, no. I didn't say I was mad about it.
[29:54] Speaker 3: I just said, you know... I did. I did.
[29:56] Speaker 4: I did.
[29:57] Speaker 1: I did. See, this is what was happening right now.
[30:00] Speaker 1: I know you're such a stand-up dude that I can
[30:02] Speaker 1: trust you to be fair, right? Because what is interesting
[30:06] Speaker 1: about it is.
[30:06] Speaker 2: They looked terrible. Then they looked great. Then they gave
[30:12] Speaker 2: up on the season.
[30:13] Speaker 1: But Kawhi Leonard has been incredible this year in a
[30:17] Speaker 1: way you rarely see for a guy playing on a
[30:20] Speaker 1: team that doesn't matter.
[30:22] Speaker 3: Well... I think because of all the stuff that's going
[30:25] Speaker 3: on around Kawhi, it's been one of those situations where
[30:28] Speaker 3: Uncle Dennis is like, hey, man, look here, we can't
[30:31] Speaker 3: back it in. We still got a job to do.
[30:36] Speaker 3: And it goes to that part of professionalism that he's displaying.
[30:43] Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, it's how the
[30:46] Speaker 3: foundation is within that organization. I think they have a
[30:51] Speaker 3: great coaching staff. Great, Coach. B. Shaw, my man, you
[30:56] Speaker 3: talk about hero, mentor, all that. You have that in him.
[31:03] Speaker 3: He knows how to connect with players. Now you got
[31:06] Speaker 3: Jeff Van Gundy as an assistant who loves the game
[31:10] Speaker 3: of basketball. You know, the Van Gundys, period. They just,
[31:15] Speaker 3: they're born with knowledge of the game. And Ty Lue,
[31:19] Speaker 3: NBA champion, NBA player, a champion as a player, you
[31:25] Speaker 3: have what's necessary there. But then you have Mr. Frank.
[31:30] Speaker 3: That's where, like, everything has to line up in a
[31:36] Speaker 3: way accordingly that's going to continue to allow you to build.
[31:40] Speaker 3: The fact that they, I love that they got ahead
[31:42] Speaker 3: of the situation with James Harden, but it still puts
[31:47] Speaker 3: them back in that scenario of, what are we talking
[31:50] Speaker 3: about here?
[31:51] Speaker 1: Come on.
[31:52] Speaker 3: Sometimes the Clippers just can't not get clipped because they
[31:57] Speaker 3: the Clippers.
[31:58] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[31:59] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[32:00] Speaker 1: But hey, the Lakers, I say this, the Clippers, it's
[32:04] Speaker 1: been an interesting season that they could wind up getting
[32:07] Speaker 1: out to play in and feel good about themselves if
[32:10] Speaker 1: they got there, right? I don't think there's anything that
[32:12] Speaker 1: could happen to make the Lakers feel good, right? Like
[32:15] Speaker 1: you have Luka Doncic, you have LeBron James, and you
[32:19] Speaker 1: guys will be lucky if you win two games in
[32:21] Speaker 1: the first round.
[32:24] Speaker 3: Bomani, there's this thing, and I say this to all
[32:28] Speaker 3: leaders when I'm coaching, whether it's corporate setting or giving
[32:32] Speaker 3: a motivational speech or coaching my 14-year-old group. To whom
[32:38] Speaker 3: much is given, much is required. So you've been blessed
[32:43] Speaker 3: with a certain skill set. And because you've been blessed
[32:48] Speaker 3: with a certain skill set, it is so important that
[32:52] Speaker 3: you do all the little things that others will be
[32:58] Speaker 3: able to see a leader in you that they can
[33:01] Speaker 3: get behind. Allah, you have LeBron James on the same
[33:06] Speaker 3: team with Luka. Luka could look at LeBron and say, man,
[33:09] Speaker 3: look at what he's done with his body for the
[33:13] Speaker 3: amount of time he's been in the NBA. Usually by
[33:18] Speaker 3: somebody's 38th year, or I should say being 38 years
[33:22] Speaker 3: of age, you no longer see cut up. You start
[33:26] Speaker 3: to see a little fluff going on that muscle because
[33:29] Speaker 3: they're not working out like they used to. But that's
[33:32] Speaker 3: the example that you see in LeBron, getting out on
[33:35] Speaker 3: fast breaks. If he turns it over now, I mean,
[33:40] Speaker 3: if there's anybody that gets a pass, it's a 40-year-old
[33:43] Speaker 3: getting back on defense. But when I see someone steal
[33:48] Speaker 3: the ball from Luka, and he barely attempts to get
[33:52] Speaker 3: back or he's chatting with the ref because he feels
[33:54] Speaker 3: like he's been wronged. He hit my hand before he
[33:57] Speaker 3: hit the ball. That's where I have the issue of
[34:01] Speaker 3: you are a leader. What message are you sending to
[34:05] Speaker 3: your teammates on the bench? When you don't go hard
[34:09] Speaker 3: because you didn't feel like you got the fair call,
[34:13] Speaker 3: I have an issue with that because I've been around
[34:16] Speaker 3: some greats that it didn't matter Okay, that's what you
[34:20] Speaker 3: want to do? You fouling me. Okay, but they're not
[34:23] Speaker 3: going to call it? All right, I'm not going to
[34:25] Speaker 3: go complain to the official. I'm going to go right
[34:28] Speaker 3: through your nose in order to make my point. Tim Hardaway,
[34:32] Speaker 3: I mean, before he got up in age, competitor. Went
[34:38] Speaker 3: at guys. Oh, yeah, that. Yeah, that. The UTEP two-step.
[34:44] Speaker 3: Watching him. Watching Zoe knowing all he got is a
[34:48] Speaker 3: jump hook. He gonna jump hook you to death or
[34:51] Speaker 3: he gonna dunk on you. But the spirit of competition,
[34:56] Speaker 3: you notice I didn't bring up my other two centers
[35:00] Speaker 3: that just would outthink you, outmaneuver you, and Tim Duncan
[35:03] Speaker 3: and Dave Robinson. That doesn't need to be said. But
[35:07] Speaker 3: to watch a guy who is a critical piece, especially
[35:12] Speaker 3: after what he's gone through in order to get there,
[35:15] Speaker 3: you would think that from that failure of being traded,
[35:19] Speaker 3: that it showed Luka that, man, I need to get
[35:22] Speaker 3: myself together. I need to make sure that that version
[35:26] Speaker 3: of what they saw in Dallas is not a version
[35:28] Speaker 3: they'll ever see with me as a Los Angeles Laker.
[35:33] Speaker 3: But what I see is some of that remnants of
[35:36] Speaker 3: what used to be still showing up.
[35:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought this was going to be show and
[35:40] Speaker 2: prove here.
[35:42] Speaker 3: Well, think about this. The beginning of the year, he
[35:45] Speaker 3: came in a little slimmer.
[35:47] Speaker 2: Yeah. It did happen.
[35:52] Speaker 3: But, you know, old habits die hard. I get it.
[35:55] Speaker 3: But he can, with his talent, with his skill set,
[36:00] Speaker 3: he should be doing, I mean, it should not be
[36:03] Speaker 3: clips of us asking or watching J.J. Reddick, you know,
[36:08] Speaker 3: trying to talk to him and he pouting and things
[36:11] Speaker 3: like that. Again, Come on now. It's something to call it.
[36:14] Speaker 3: It's something to call accountability in this. But Manu, you
[36:18] Speaker 3: have a boss to answer to. You can't ever think that,
[36:22] Speaker 3: oh man, shoot, I'm the one. Now you may feel
[36:24] Speaker 3: like you're the one, but you can't ever act like
[36:27] Speaker 3: that when you're not bringing what you're supposed to bring
[36:30] Speaker 3: to the table or else they will what? Find someone else.
[36:35] Speaker 3: And I know that that sounds harsh, but in reality,
[36:40] Speaker 3: that's truly what it is. or you become handcuffed by
[36:44] Speaker 3: a player and his lack of effort from time to time.
[36:49] Speaker 3: And you don't want an organization like that. Those organizations
[36:53] Speaker 3: don't accomplish much in life.
[36:55] Speaker 1: Now I want to go to the East and I've
[36:57] Speaker 1: talked about this on the show and I've talked about
[37:00] Speaker 1: this with you a little bit, but we didn't really
[37:02] Speaker 1: get into it. I'm curious because you have much more
[37:05] Speaker 1: experience as a, obviously as a professional basketball player, I
[37:08] Speaker 1: can only assume that if the Celtics bring Jason Tatum back,
[37:13] Speaker 1: everybody medical involved somehow thinks that this is okay. Okay
[37:18] Speaker 1: and a good idea are two different things. I would
[37:21] Speaker 1: have never dreamed of bringing him back out there this year.
[37:25] Speaker 1: they seem like they're going.
[37:26] Speaker 2: To do it.
[37:27] Speaker 1: And like the idea is, and I'm curious what you
[37:29] Speaker 1: think about this is if Jason Tatum was going to
[37:31] Speaker 1: come off the bench and be Vinnie Johnson and just
[37:33] Speaker 1: gun for 15 minutes a game.
[37:35] Speaker 2: Okay.
[37:35] Speaker 1: Maybe that works, but I don't, I don't know how
[37:38] Speaker 1: you just drop Jason Tatum in coming off an Achilles
[37:41] Speaker 1: with as much uncertainty as we'll have about what that
[37:43] Speaker 1: means about what he has to provide. And everybody like,
[37:46] Speaker 1: I just feel like you look around. I'm like, Oh,
[37:48] Speaker 1: this is normal to everybody. I feel like I'm the crazy.
[37:51] Speaker 3: It, Well, first of all, thank you for giving me
[37:54] Speaker 3: that experience of being a player. You know, it's very
[37:58] Speaker 3: rare that I get those kind of compliments from you, Bomani.
[38:01] Speaker 3: But I like to go back to this. Celtics years
[38:08] Speaker 3: ago had a player by the name of Isaiah Thomas.
[38:12] Speaker 3: And he had an incredible year. He was building up,
[38:16] Speaker 3: carried the team, dealing with so many emotional things. He
[38:20] Speaker 3: lost his sister. and just certain things in life was
[38:23] Speaker 3: taking a toll. But he gave his all to that organization,
[38:26] Speaker 3: playing hurt. Now, as time went on, they found out
[38:32] Speaker 3: that maybe he shouldn't have been playing. And I get it.
[38:37] Speaker 3: This is a business. But at the same time, I
[38:41] Speaker 3: started off today, you and I were talking. I talked
[38:44] Speaker 3: about how as you get older, you got to be
[38:46] Speaker 3: able to conform with the newer nuances of whatever the
[38:50] Speaker 3: game is, whether it's new offensive plays, whether it's different
[38:54] Speaker 3: ways of handling a medical staff. But your investment is
[38:59] Speaker 3: Jason Tatum. Jason Tatum is not a guy that comes
[39:02] Speaker 3: off the bench. Jason Tatum is an individual that's going
[39:06] Speaker 3: to have the ball in his hands for quite some
[39:08] Speaker 3: time because of how good he is. Now, if it's me,
[39:13] Speaker 3: I'm looking at it from the standpoint of I want
[39:16] Speaker 3: to protect my assets. Is it better for me to
[39:19] Speaker 3: have him now or let's start off with a week
[39:22] Speaker 3: of training camp and go from there next season? Right now,
[39:27] Speaker 3: they have a flow with how they do things. I
[39:30] Speaker 3: play for the Miami Heat and I remember when Alonzo
[39:33] Speaker 3: Mourning started coming back to practice, he sat out because
[39:36] Speaker 3: of the whole kidney issue and never knew if he
[39:39] Speaker 3: would play again. But then he showed up at practice
[39:43] Speaker 3: and he was doing conditioning drills and things like that.
[39:46] Speaker 3: Then he started practicing with us And at this time,
[39:50] Speaker 3: Anthony Mason, rest his soul, was an all-star for us
[39:54] Speaker 3: and our team MVP. He was playing the four position.
[39:58] Speaker 3: Brian Grant was at the five. I was at the three.
[40:01] Speaker 3: Eddie Jones at the two. And Tim Hardaway was at
[40:03] Speaker 3: the one. And so Zoe starts practicing with us. And
[40:09] Speaker 3: I'm like, hmm, Zoe's coming back. I don't know what
[40:13] Speaker 3: to think of it because I'm the player. All I'm
[40:16] Speaker 3: looking at from standpoint is, Hey, it's Zoe. He's going
[40:19] Speaker 3: to give us what he used to give us. Well,
[40:21] Speaker 3: Zoe was coming off of a kidney transplant. And because
[40:27] Speaker 3: of that, there were certain things we just didn't know
[40:29] Speaker 3: if he would ever get back to that player. So
[40:33] Speaker 3: I say that to share this. We start, we play
[40:36] Speaker 3: a game. We're incorporating Zoe back in. Mace is unhappy,
[40:40] Speaker 3: not because he doesn't like him, but because the flow
[40:43] Speaker 3: of the game changed. Now the ball was no longer
[40:46] Speaker 3: in Mace's hands. and Mason making decisions. Now, Zoe is
[40:51] Speaker 3: pounding the ball, getting to his shot, and it's created
[40:55] Speaker 3: a disruption. Now everyone is suffering because of that. Maybe
[40:59] Speaker 3: Zoe shouldn't have come back during the season quite like
[41:02] Speaker 3: he did. Now I say, looking ahead, what if now
[41:06] Speaker 3: Jalen's not able to get to touches, or not even Jalen.
[41:09] Speaker 3: It's going to be a role player that's not going
[41:11] Speaker 3: to get touches because Jason is taking a bulk load
[41:15] Speaker 3: of the shots. It's nothing against Jason Tatum. It's just
[41:20] Speaker 3: the disruption that happens during the course of a season,
[41:23] Speaker 3: or let alone the chemistry of what you guys got going. Again,
[41:28] Speaker 3: let me state this because somebody's going to hear this,
[41:30] Speaker 3: Bruce Bowen, and say that Jason Tatum shouldn't play because
[41:33] Speaker 3: he's terrible. That is not what I'm saying. He has
[41:36] Speaker 3: to go through a litany of different things. Do we
[41:39] Speaker 3: trust the explosion again? And all the things of what
[41:44] Speaker 3: happens during the course of games. How do you make
[41:46] Speaker 3: the adjustment? I don't know if that's necessarily the thing,
[41:49] Speaker 3: but if it's me, I'm protecting my asset, especially in
[41:52] Speaker 3: today's game, and utilize this year off to allow him
[41:57] Speaker 3: to kind of get his body back together and see
[42:02] Speaker 3: the game in a different light.
[42:04] Speaker 2: Let me tell you, this is my feeling.
[42:06] Speaker 1: If you're not going to play Jason Tatum 36 minutes
[42:08] Speaker 1: a game, I don't think you can put him in
[42:10] Speaker 1: front of Joe Mazzulla because that is a crazy person
[42:13] Speaker 1: who really only knows how to go hard. And I
[42:15] Speaker 1: say this as a compliment. Like, I can't believe how
[42:17] Speaker 1: much I've come to, I don't know this man, but
[42:19] Speaker 1: I've come to love.
[42:20] Speaker 2: Him, right?
[42:20] Speaker 1: Like, I appreciate, there's an outright sincerity and he's trying
[42:24] Speaker 1: to win all of this.
[42:25] Speaker 2: You know, he a little different.
[42:27] Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
[42:30] Speaker 3: We like to call it no fluff.
[42:32] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
[42:34] Speaker 1: All he knows is what is directly in front of him.
[42:37] Speaker 1: That is all it is. But you're not going to
[42:40] Speaker 1: give him Jason Tatum and he'll be like, cool, I'll
[42:41] Speaker 1: just play him 10 minutes. His brain does not operate
[42:45] Speaker 1: like that.
[42:46] Speaker 3: Can I just give you this? When Joe was at
[42:50] Speaker 3: West Virginia, he didn't play a lot his freshman year,
[42:53] Speaker 3: sophomore year. He didn't play a whole lot. But he
[42:56] Speaker 3: got to start against Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, I
[42:59] Speaker 3: believe it was. And they beat him, and he has
[43:01] Speaker 3: 17 points. But what he talked about in his post-game interview,
[43:06] Speaker 3: it wasn't, yeah, you know, coaches finally realized what I
[43:10] Speaker 3: could do, and I'm just happy I got a chance
[43:12] Speaker 3: to do it. That wasn't what he said. What he
[43:15] Speaker 3: talked about, he said, my freshman year, because of our length,
[43:19] Speaker 3: I said, man, we could be a really good 1-3-1
[43:21] Speaker 3: zone team, and if we could just incorporate things because
[43:25] Speaker 3: of our length. My point in all that? as when
[43:29] Speaker 3: others are trying to get buckets, he's thinking about the
[43:32] Speaker 3: game at another level. No fluff. He is about that
[43:37] Speaker 3: life of how can I make this group better? Oh,
[43:41] Speaker 3: he's with me? Let's go. 38 minutes. Absolutely. 30 plus minutes.
[43:45] Speaker 3: Because with coaches that are always thinking of making it better,
[43:50] Speaker 3: they do not like seeing players that can't play suit
[43:53] Speaker 3: up because they will make the mistake of saying, so-and-so,
[43:56] Speaker 3: get in there for so-and-so. So for him, He doesn't
[43:59] Speaker 3: need to see Jason at all if he's not going
[44:02] Speaker 3: to utilize him. Once he starts seeing Jason, now it
[44:06] Speaker 3: starts happening. Sorry.
[44:10] Speaker 2: And then somebody got to be the one to try
[44:11] Speaker 2: to explain.
[44:12] Speaker 3: It to him. Who going to out-explain? Who going to
[44:17] Speaker 3: out-explain why this is not good? Brad can't even do it.
[44:20] Speaker 1: Yeah, Brad can't even explain that to him. And look,
[44:23] Speaker 1: I give Brad credit. Ime, I think, was a fairly
[44:26] Speaker 1: obvious hire. Or that was one that a lot of
[44:29] Speaker 1: other people would have made. Now, when he hired Mazzulli,
[44:31] Speaker 1: he was in a position where he kind of had
[44:32] Speaker 1: to because Ime, right?
[44:35] Speaker 2: And I thought in year one, we were like, hey,
[44:36] Speaker 2: I don't know about this.
[44:37] Speaker 1: And in year two, when they brought Cassell in as
[44:39] Speaker 1: an assistant, I don't know about you, but my thought
[44:41] Speaker 1: was your replacement is right there if you don't get
[44:45] Speaker 1: this straight. And nope, it's worked. And then this year,
[44:48] Speaker 1: this has been coach of the year level stuff that he.
[44:52] Speaker 2: Has managed to done. Dude, got to give it to Brad.
[44:54] Speaker 2: Brad was like, nah, I think I see something in
[44:57] Speaker 2: this dude.
[44:57] Speaker 3: Well, you think about Brad's mindset, how he thinks the
[45:02] Speaker 3: game and how he's a great thinker of the game.
[45:05] Speaker 3: Even at Butler, you know, what he was able to
[45:07] Speaker 3: do there. So I think it gets kind of brushed
[45:13] Speaker 3: off to the side of when they were putting a
[45:16] Speaker 3: staff together, what Brad saw in Joe. He saw that
[45:22] Speaker 3: person that we see now. And a lot of times
[45:25] Speaker 3: in these situations, Brad is so proud of what Joe
[45:29] Speaker 3: has been able to accomplish, not because it's tagged to him,
[45:34] Speaker 3: but because these are the things that Brad saw. And
[45:38] Speaker 3: Brad didn't know if Joe would ever get an opportunity
[45:41] Speaker 3: within the Celtic organization To be able to do this. Now,
[45:46] Speaker 3: that's not to say that Joe wouldn't have gone elsewhere
[45:48] Speaker 3: and maybe had a head coaching opportunity. But within this organization,
[45:54] Speaker 3: no one knew that the whole email deal would happen
[45:56] Speaker 3: the way it did. So more than anything, Brad is
[46:00] Speaker 3: thrilled with the mind that he knew Joe had because
[46:04] Speaker 3: we're talking about a guy in college again. nobody. I
[46:07] Speaker 3: know my teammates weren't thinking about no doggone 1-3-1. I
[46:13] Speaker 3: had some thugs. I had a guy hit our coach
[46:16] Speaker 3: one time at practice.
[46:18] Speaker 2: At Fullerton?
[46:19] Speaker 3: At Fullerton.
[46:20] Speaker 1: Man, that was the.
[46:20] Speaker 3: Last time I saw that brother. When he punched me, pow!
[46:23] Speaker 3: And he walked straight out of the gym. Now, the
[46:26] Speaker 3: coach was over there like, you, you, you, you, you, you. Yeah,
[46:30] Speaker 3: I'm like, nah, coach, he went that way. Oh, coach,
[46:33] Speaker 3: your eyes are a little crossed right now. But That
[46:37] Speaker 3: was the last time I saw that player. But, you know,
[46:41] Speaker 3: I had players like that. Guys weren't thinking on that
[46:44] Speaker 3: level of like it's only been few that I've been
[46:48] Speaker 3: on the bench with. Like Jack Vaughn is another one
[46:50] Speaker 3: that that is a great thinker of the game. And
[46:53] Speaker 3: to see him go back to Kansas now and and possibly,
[46:57] Speaker 3: you know, lead that group. It only makes sense.
[47:01] Speaker 1: I want to ask you about the Pistons because I
[47:03] Speaker 1: know Bruce Bowen well, and I know the kind of
[47:05] Speaker 1: team that Bruce Bowen going to like.
[47:07] Speaker 2: And that is a Bruce Bowen team right there. I
[47:09] Speaker 2: see you can't even sit still talking about him.
[47:12] Speaker 4: I can't.
[47:13] Speaker 3: I will say this. I'm going to go another direction.
[47:16] Speaker 3: Of course, what Bickerstaff is doing there, I love it
[47:20] Speaker 3: because he's just come in and connected with those guys.
[47:23] Speaker 3: I think when it comes to NBA, it's truly about
[47:26] Speaker 3: your connection with players. And it starts with Cade Cunningham.
[47:31] Speaker 3: I saw K when he was a sophomore in high school.
[47:34] Speaker 3: I used to work this or observe. I said work
[47:37] Speaker 3: on accident. Whoops. But the Nike league camp, man, and
[47:41] Speaker 3: he would, he would compete against all these guards. And
[47:44] Speaker 3: at that time it was Jalen green. He and Jalen
[47:46] Speaker 3: green were the one, two, one, two. And K would
[47:50] Speaker 3: come down, man, get an M one. And you know, everybody. Okay.
[47:57] Speaker 3: Get hit. He just turned around, run back on defense.
[48:00] Speaker 4: And.
[48:01] Speaker 3: I saw it in him his senior year, then I
[48:03] Speaker 3: saw it when he was at Oklahoma State. And I'm
[48:06] Speaker 3: so proud of that group because of what he has
[48:10] Speaker 3: as far as the leadership there. Detroit has always had
[48:14] Speaker 3: great leaders. Joe Dumars, Chauncey Billups. And now you enter
[48:20] Speaker 3: into the mix as players on the floor, Cade Cunningham.
[48:25] Speaker 3: You take Amir, not Amir Johnson, it's his twin.
[48:27] Speaker 2: No, you're talking about Assar. Who?
[48:30] Speaker 4: Man.
[48:31] Speaker 3: I'm like, how did you get two kids with all
[48:34] Speaker 3: that athleticism? Him going up against Jalen Brunson last year has, again,
[48:43] Speaker 3: I talked about we only learn in our failures. That
[48:46] Speaker 3: moment in time will always be in his head. And
[48:51] Speaker 3: that's only going to make him better. The big man
[48:53] Speaker 3: down low. Man, I almost want to call him Orlando
[48:56] Speaker 3: Woolridge because he looks so much like him with that zero.
[49:01] Speaker 3: You talk about enforcer, you gotta have somebody that got
[49:05] Speaker 3: your back, man. And he for sure got everybody's back.
[49:09] Speaker 3: Let him come on in here. I'll show you what
[49:11] Speaker 3: I'm gonna do to him. Well, he got guys scared
[49:13] Speaker 3: to drive the ball.
[49:15] Speaker 2: Well, and then they bring Stewart off the bench.
[49:17] Speaker 1: Like, it is amazing It is amazing that the Pistons,
[49:20] Speaker 1: this is the third incarnation of this model that they
[49:23] Speaker 1: have broken out of a team.
[49:25] Speaker 3: It works. Omani, it works for them. I can't think
[49:30] Speaker 3: of another organization other than San Antonio where you put
[49:33] Speaker 3: a centerpiece as far as a big man and you
[49:36] Speaker 3: build around it. It's the hard work. It's the lunch pail.
[49:41] Speaker 3: I'm bringing my hard hat. It's those things that work
[49:45] Speaker 3: in Detroit. You don't have Detroit as a, hey, we're
[49:49] Speaker 3: going to get up and down. We want to shoot 27,
[49:52] Speaker 3: 43s a game. No, that ends up just a bad
[49:55] Speaker 3: team in the East. We have enough of that. So
[49:58] Speaker 3: you get a team that can buy in on that
[50:01] Speaker 3: aspect of things. We're going to work hard. We're going
[50:03] Speaker 3: to do everything that we need to do with purpose.
[50:07] Speaker 3: And I love what Bigger Staff and his staff is
[50:09] Speaker 3: doing down there with that.
[50:11] Speaker 2: What do you think about your man Stewart?
[50:15] Speaker 3: Which one?
[50:16] Speaker 2: Isaiah.
[50:17] Speaker 4: Oof.
[50:20] Speaker 3: I mean, Bomani, it seems like there's always mess. But
[50:30] Speaker 3: the thing is, he got a little Ron Artest in him.
[50:36] Speaker 3: from the standpoint that it was like, hey, hey, hey,
[50:38] Speaker 3: come on back over here. Don't go over there. Don't
[50:40] Speaker 3: go over there. But he's like, nah, nah, nah.
[50:42] Speaker 2: I got to go over there. Nobody ever called the
[50:46] Speaker 2: cops on Rod.
[50:48] Speaker 1: That dude put his son's car on the cops.
[50:54] Speaker 3: So, but now I know we joke about it and
[50:59] Speaker 3: that's all it is, ladies and gentlemen. It's jokes because,
[51:02] Speaker 3: but Somebody is able to connect with him. And this
[51:08] Speaker 3: was his way to get in. And yes, you are
[51:12] Speaker 3: an enforcer as well. But let's, as they say with
[51:19] Speaker 3: deli meats, let's curate it to a point where they're
[51:23] Speaker 3: not calling the po-po. Yeah.
[51:28] Speaker 2: We got to stop there.
[51:30] Speaker 1: Because at first, I was judging that man for calling 5-0.
[51:33] Speaker 1: And then I think it was Obi-Wan who hit me
[51:35] Speaker 1: up and was like, nah, he the one that's in
[51:37] Speaker 1: this situation. Apparently, it sounded like he had been told
[51:42] Speaker 1: that it was on-site in perpetuity.
[51:48] Speaker 3: I know we come from that generation where there was
[51:52] Speaker 3: a fight, but then they let it go. I think
[51:55] Speaker 3: the worst... The worst one was Doug Christie and Rick Fox,
[52:01] Speaker 3: two light-skinned brothers.
[52:02] Speaker 2: It was beige rage. It was a lot of beige rage.
[52:07] Speaker 3: I'd never heard that word, beige rage. But I mean,
[52:12] Speaker 3: they really took that thing to another level because we
[52:18] Speaker 3: pretty boys ain't supposed to do that. But can you
[52:21] Speaker 3: imagine some of those folks that's like, yo, dog, I'm
[52:23] Speaker 3: out of the mud. I don't care about this. When
[52:26] Speaker 3: a person says they don't care or say less, that's
[52:34] Speaker 3: bad news to me. That's bad news to me. But
[52:37] Speaker 3: there was a player, he went to Wake Forest, played
[52:44] Speaker 3: with the Heat, Johnson.
[52:46] Speaker 2: James Johnson. James Johnson know Kung Fu, one of them.
[52:50] Speaker 3: Man, look at him. I would probably apologize him if
[52:56] Speaker 3: I fouled him. Hey, brother, look here. I am so sorry.
[53:00] Speaker 3: That was not intentional. The only other person I could
[53:04] Speaker 3: think of in that situation was Charles Oakley. Oak still
[53:08] Speaker 3: might smack you. I was at the Bellagio one time,
[53:14] Speaker 3: and we were on a craps table, and Oak just
[53:16] Speaker 3: got back into the Bellagio. And we gambling, and we
[53:20] Speaker 3: having a good time. Now, Oak got a bunch of
[53:22] Speaker 3: chips that he's putting on the come line. And this
[53:27] Speaker 3: is new to me. I only know Blackjack. I know
[53:29] Speaker 3: how to count to 21. Okay. So I take one
[53:33] Speaker 3: of my chips and I put it down there like, hey.
[53:37] Speaker 3: And 12 came up. So 12 pays like 30 to 1,
[53:41] Speaker 3: the odds there. And so they give Oak all his chips.
[53:47] Speaker 3: And I said, what about mine? And the guy was like,
[53:50] Speaker 3: you put it down too late. And Oak said, y'all
[53:53] Speaker 3: better pay my boy his money or else ain't nobody playing.
[53:56] Speaker 3: And I was like, they gave me my chips, Bomani.
[54:03] Speaker 3: I left. I was like, mm-mm, mm-mm. No, no, no, no.
[54:10] Speaker 3: I just, there's just a mm-mm. And he was helping
[54:14] Speaker 3: me out.
[54:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's about it. He scared the Jesus out of me.
[54:17] Speaker 2: That time he was helping you out.
[54:21] Speaker 3: That's the part where it's like, ooh, man, what if
[54:24] Speaker 3: he was mad?
[54:26] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[54:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say this. You've been to Cade Cunningham.
[54:30] Speaker 1: I watched Cade Cunningham play one game in college. It
[54:33] Speaker 1: was at Oklahoma State. It was either the conference tournament.
[54:37] Speaker 2: Or it was the NCAA tournament. I can't remember which.
[54:40] Speaker 1: And what always stuck out to me was after every play,
[54:43] Speaker 1: he was the bring it in dude. And I watched
[54:45] Speaker 1: how fast all those other dudes ran to him. when
[54:49] Speaker 1: he brought it in. And I was like, oh, we
[54:52] Speaker 1: got something going on here. Like a Mike Conley type
[54:54] Speaker 1: of situation. Where I wasn't, he's a better player than
[54:57] Speaker 1: Mike Conley. At that time, I wasn't sure exactly how
[55:00] Speaker 1: good he was. Like my question for him at the
[55:01] Speaker 1: NBA was, like it was with Mike Conley. Your team
[55:05] Speaker 1: has to be a certain level of good for you
[55:07] Speaker 1: to get the Mike Conley benefits out of it.
[55:10] Speaker 2: But if y'all are sorry, Mike Conley can make you better.
[55:12] Speaker 2: But if you're good, Mike Conley can help make you
[55:15] Speaker 2: very good.
[55:17] Speaker 3: And I think that's because of all the noise surrounding
[55:23] Speaker 3: him going to Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State had hired his
[55:26] Speaker 3: brother the year before. And at least that's what I
[55:30] Speaker 3: remember in that scenario. But you cannot put a price
[55:36] Speaker 3: tag on leadership. Leadership is something that's not about the
[55:42] Speaker 3: price tag. It is who the individuals are. You brought
[55:47] Speaker 3: up a great point in Mike Conley. There are a
[55:50] Speaker 3: lot of people that felt like Mike Conley shouldn't be
[55:53] Speaker 3: in the NBA. There are people that thought less of
[55:57] Speaker 3: him because he played with Greg Oden in college, as
[56:01] Speaker 3: well as the AAU scene. But what you've been able
[56:04] Speaker 3: to see from Mike Conley was something that has always
[56:07] Speaker 3: been who he was. He's been a great leader wherever
[56:10] Speaker 3: he's been. And so when we talk about Cade, You
[56:15] Speaker 3: talk about a leader that's tough. You know, when they
[56:19] Speaker 3: played the San Antonio Spurs and he chucked Wimby, it
[56:24] Speaker 3: wasn't all like, no, ref, he ran into me. No,
[56:27] Speaker 3: he's like, yeah, I did it. And that's what you
[56:31] Speaker 3: want from your leader. But also the leader that he
[56:34] Speaker 3: hit also knocked down a three the very next play. Yeah. Yeah.
[56:42] Speaker 1: I got one last thing with you, Bruce Bowen, before
[56:44] Speaker 1: we get out of here, because we were talking about
[56:45] Speaker 1: what's going to happen with the Celtics if they bring
[56:48] Speaker 1: Jason Tatum back. And just speaking hypothetically here, if Bruce
[56:54] Speaker 1: Bowen was playing out there with Jason Tatum, would it
[56:58] Speaker 1: be the second quarter or the fourth quarter?
[57:01] Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
[57:02] Speaker 1: Not that you would kick him in the back of
[57:03] Speaker 1: the leg, but like... Just leave it in the air.
[57:08] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, like, like, like, let it,
[57:10] Speaker 2: let it, let it.
[57:11] Speaker 3: No, no, no. This, this, this is another one of
[57:13] Speaker 3: those great questions you have. You know, um, you said
[57:19] Speaker 3: if I was playing today, right today. Okay. Uh, again,
[57:24] Speaker 3: I love your work, Bomani. I mean, I think you are,
[57:26] Speaker 3: you know, it's no surprise that you are where you are. Um,
[57:33] Speaker 3: being at it's me and, and, You know, I've been
[57:38] Speaker 3: known to get close to guys. Jason Tatum, I have
[57:43] Speaker 3: a lot of respect for. And because I have a
[57:46] Speaker 3: lot of respect for him, I'm going to play hard
[57:48] Speaker 3: against him. Now, this is Bruce Bowen, 32 years old.
[57:51] Speaker 2: Okay.
[57:52] Speaker 4: Or 28.
[57:52] Speaker 3: I understand that they watching me. I understand. So, I'm
[58:12] Speaker 3: going to try and play a physical game and continue
[58:23] Speaker 3: to stress that I know that they're watching me. I
[58:27] Speaker 3: got you. I got you. I got you.
[58:29] Speaker 4: Officials!
[58:30] Speaker 3: Officials! Hey, I can do this.
[58:34] Speaker 1: I just had so many flashbacks to you and that
[58:38] Speaker 1: number 12 when you went like this.
[58:40] Speaker 2: Like if they put a statue of you in front
[58:42] Speaker 2: of the building, it's going.
[58:43] Speaker 3: To be you going just like this. Have you seen this, man?
[58:46] Speaker 3: Wearing that jersey.
[58:47] Speaker 1: You're out here looking like a mob trying.
[58:50] Speaker 2: To make a scene. What are you talking about?
[58:52] Speaker 3: Well, my answer is because officials are taught that if
[58:58] Speaker 3: they see this action, they call fouls. So if my
[59:02] Speaker 3: hands are here... In.
[59:05] Speaker 4: Boston.
[59:10] Speaker 3: I'm going to show my hands. And more importantly, Bomani,
[59:15] Speaker 3: because of the rules of the game today, Harper got
[59:23] Speaker 3: called for a flagrant one. He contested the shot and
[59:32] Speaker 3: Jalen came down next to his foot. Bruce Bowen would
[59:37] Speaker 3: be as he contests and I come down before either
[59:41] Speaker 3: running away so that they can't say that I did
[59:44] Speaker 3: something illegal. Yep.
[59:46] Speaker 1: Because it wasn't illegal where Bruce Bowen played. And then
[59:50] Speaker 1: in today's day and age.
[59:52] Speaker 3: I need to drink my tea.
[59:53] Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm just saying, man, you know, what are you saying?
[59:57] Speaker 3: Bomani?
[59:58] Speaker 2: What are you saying?
[59:59] Speaker 1: Some people got things named after him. Sometimes it's a statue.
[1:00:03] Speaker 1: Sometimes it's a building. Sometimes it's a park. Sometimes it's
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: a rule. You know what I'm saying?
[1:00:09] Speaker 3: You know what? I told my therapist that you would
[1:00:12] Speaker 3: do this. You would do this around this time. But
[1:00:16] Speaker 3: I'm not even fazed by what you're saying, Mama. I'm
[1:00:18] Speaker 3: not even fazed by what you're saying. I just seem
[1:00:22] Speaker 3: to have a rash right now because all the forgiveness
[1:00:25] Speaker 3: that I've given you. And brother.
[1:00:29] Speaker 2: You a legend, brother. You a legend. I'm giving you
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: credit for being a legend.
[1:00:33] Speaker 3: No, no, no. See, you just pouring gasoline and alcohol at.
[1:00:37] Speaker 2: The same time on the fire. You a legend. They
[1:00:40] Speaker 2: should have named the airport after you. But instead, they
[1:00:43] Speaker 2: just decided to give you a rule.
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: Actually, though, to be fair, it's the Zaza rule. It
[1:00:50] Speaker 1: ain't even the Bruce Bowen rule. It's the Zaza rule.
[1:00:52] Speaker 3: Well, what did Zaza do?
[1:00:54] Speaker 2: That's right.
[1:00:55] Speaker 3: Hello.
[1:00:56] Speaker 2: That's right.
[1:00:57] Speaker 3: When it happened to me, y'all don't talk about when
[1:00:59] Speaker 3: it happened to me. See, it happened. Look, it happened
[1:01:04] Speaker 3: to me with Baron Davis. Now what? Yeah, you're right.
[1:01:07] Speaker 3: You're right.
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: You know what? We need to take that up.
[1:01:09] Speaker 3: I don't like your tone right now. No, no, no.
[1:01:12] Speaker 3: You're just doing that to comply.
[1:01:14] Speaker 2: You know what? Not as you mentioned, you're right. It's
[1:01:16] Speaker 2: the Bruce Bowen rule because they did it to you. See, see, see, see, see, see.
[1:01:25] Speaker 2: Take that compliment, Bruce Baldwin. Take that compliment.
[1:01:27] Speaker 3: That is not what I'm doing. That is not what
[1:01:31] Speaker 3: I'm doing. I know it's not.
[1:01:32] Speaker 2: I know it's not.
[1:01:33] Speaker 3: I tell you this, Bomani, I really do enjoy talking
[1:01:37] Speaker 3: to you sometimes. But it seems like it always go
[1:01:41] Speaker 3: a certain direction with you.
[1:01:45] Speaker 2: But I bring it back to love. You know what
[1:01:47] Speaker 2: I'm saying? Oh, there it is. That's my man. That
[1:01:49] Speaker 2: was just.
[1:01:50] Speaker 3: I was waiting for the chef in you to bring
[1:01:54] Speaker 3: it back. You know, you just did your marinade with me.
[1:01:57] Speaker 3: And now, you about to go burn up, I mean,
[1:02:00] Speaker 3: cook some stuff.
[1:02:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, but that is Bruce Bowen, my brother. It is
[1:02:05] Speaker 1: always a pleasure, man. I appreciate you joining us.
