Bomani Jones kicks off the show by reacting to the NFL filling none of its 10 head coaching openings with a black candidate. Later, he discusses the Giannis trade sweepstakes and why he believes he needs to be more forceful in demanding a trade. Finally, he reacts to Steve Tisch being named in the Epstein files, Bitcoin's price plummeting, and Lauyrn Hill's shockingly punctual performance at the Grammys. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:11] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is Super Bowl week. So, of course,
[0:25] Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the Grammys and a few
[0:28] Speaker 1: other things and the Epstein files.
[0:30] Speaker 2: But This is, you know, I guess, Brian, you've only really.
[0:33] Speaker 1: Been working in the game here, truly in the midst
[0:35] Speaker 1: of the full-on internet era.
[0:37] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[0:38] Speaker 2: But it is interesting how.
[0:40] Speaker 1: Super Bowl week is not nearly as dominated by the
[0:46] Speaker 1: Super Bowl in the zeitgeist as it used to be.
[0:49] Speaker 1: Because now we just got so much other bullshit to
[0:51] Speaker 1: talk about.
[0:52] Speaker 4: Right.
[0:53] Speaker 2: Like, that used to not.
[0:54] Speaker 1: Be the case, but it used to be like, it's Monday, media,
[0:57] Speaker 1: or I think Monday or Tuesday, but like media day, right?
[0:59] Speaker 3: That's now.
[1:00] Speaker 2: Super Bowl opening night or something like that.
[1:02] Speaker 1: Because media day does not mean the same thing because
[1:05] Speaker 1: you see these.
[1:05] Speaker 2: People all the time.
[1:06] Speaker 3: All the time, yeah.
[1:07] Speaker 2: No one is just introducing themselves to America in that way.
[1:10] Speaker 3: I think I caught the last wave of that because
[1:12] Speaker 3: that was like the mid-2010s.
[1:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, and even then, I remember it started feeling like, huh. Like,
[1:18] Speaker 1: to me, the biggest event... of uh super bowl week
[1:23] Speaker 1: is actually the nba trade deadline which is thursday at
[1:27] Speaker 1: three o'clock be on the lookout if there's something happening
[1:29] Speaker 1: we'll be having a quick reaction about that one but
[1:32] Speaker 1: the super bowl itself does not fill the week in
[1:35] Speaker 1: the way that it used to like we don't need
[1:37] Speaker 1: a press conference every day from the super bowl to
[1:40] Speaker 1: give us things that we can talk about during the
[1:43] Speaker 1: week we don't we don't need that Um, so instead
[1:46] Speaker 1: we get to talk about what the NFL maybe doesn't
[1:49] Speaker 1: want us to talk about, or you know what? They
[1:51] Speaker 1: just might not give a fuck, which is we had
[1:54] Speaker 1: 10 head coaching openings this year.
[1:56] Speaker 2: I would like to take a moment to point.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Out 10 head coaching openings is a lot guys. It's
[2:01] Speaker 1: damn near 30% of the league turned over their coaches
[2:06] Speaker 1: this year. And you know, whose fault it is. Kersignetti, man.
[2:12] Speaker 1: Ain't no excuses, Indiana won. You gonna tell me you
[2:15] Speaker 1: can't win with the Raiders? Indiana just won a national championship.
[2:18] Speaker 2: Hey man, it's the Cardinals.
[2:20] Speaker 1: Indiana just won a national championship. That's trickling down all
[2:23] Speaker 1: the way to here. Get ready, in the NBA, Chris
[2:25] Speaker 1: Cignetti gonna get some of y'all fired too. But anyway,
[2:28] Speaker 1: 10 head coaches were hired. None of them were black.
[2:36] Speaker 1: Not even the dude named Joe. Not even the dude
[2:40] Speaker 1: named Jesse. Not even the dude named Robert who keeps
[2:43] Speaker 1: a fade or a bald. I can't tell exactly what
[2:45] Speaker 1: he's going here, but nope. Shit, two Mikes. Neither one
[2:49] Speaker 1: of them was black. Nope. We got a dude whose
[2:53] Speaker 1: name is spelled unconventionally. He ain't even black, but Ryan,
[2:58] Speaker 1: it's the white people unconventional spelling.
[3:00] Speaker 2: You know who I'm talking about, right?
[3:01] Speaker 3: You're going to have to enlighten me.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Clint with a K.
[3:04] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I forgot we're on week two of Clint Gubiak.
[3:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean, look, you know what? What's his name?
[3:11] Speaker 1: Roger Clemens did this too, right? But the thing with
[3:13] Speaker 1: Roger Clemens is his last name is C. He named
[3:16] Speaker 1: them all K because Ks are strikeouts.
[3:18] Speaker 2: Whoa, buddy. That was a bit much.
[3:21] Speaker 1: But anyway.
[3:22] Speaker 3: Talk about someone who I'm glad doesn't have a podcast.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Buddy.
[3:25] Speaker 3: Buddy, buddy.
[3:27] Speaker 1: He probably ain't even got no computer. But Gary Kubiak, Mr. Knipple,
[3:32] Speaker 1: all you white people who give your kids these KK names,
[3:35] Speaker 1: don't do this to us, because we're going to have
[3:38] Speaker 1: that question. That being said, it's the great irony, Ryan,
[3:41] Speaker 1: that the guy that really messed up in naming his
[3:43] Speaker 1: kid is the guy who you would think would not
[3:46] Speaker 1: make this mistake, and that would be Steve Kerr. For
[3:50] Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, Steve Kerr has a
[3:53] Speaker 1: son named Nicholas Knipple. who I believe has begun to
[3:57] Speaker 1: go as Nicholas in public.
[3:59] Speaker 2: But used to go by the shortening of Nicholas.
[4:01] Speaker 1: Yes, as opposed to he used to go by Nick
[4:05] Speaker 1: in his regular life, meaning his name was Nick Kerr,
[4:08] Speaker 1: and you have to say it really slow.
[4:10] Speaker 3: I'm going to stick with Nicholas.
[4:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what? Or just Nick.
[4:14] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Right.
[4:15] Speaker 1: He just he just going to be Nick. That's that's
[4:17] Speaker 1: that's all it could be. Maybe he you know what
[4:19] Speaker 1: he needs to do. He needs to turn into a nickname.
[4:22] Speaker 1: He needs to get out here and see if he
[4:23] Speaker 1: can borrow that nickname from Nick Foles. Right. That's what
[4:28] Speaker 1: he needed to do. He needed to go out here
[4:29] Speaker 1: and get him a reputation in these streets. And then
[4:32] Speaker 1: they could start calling him BDN. He could carry it out.
[4:36] Speaker 1: But anyway, back to these coaches. No black coaches were
[4:40] Speaker 1: hired in this cycle, though it is important to note
[4:42] Speaker 1: that Robert Sala is Lebanese and from around Detroit. Well,
[4:47] Speaker 1: he's from Dearborn, Michigan, and that's their town. They got
[4:52] Speaker 1: that one, okay? You know, they went ahead and got
[4:55] Speaker 1: that one. But that leads to, you know, semi-annual hand-wringing
[5:03] Speaker 1: about hiring and Rooney Rules stuff and kind of looking
[5:07] Speaker 1: at the fact that These things really go in cycles. Now,
[5:11] Speaker 1: I used to do something every year on the Rooney Rule,
[5:16] Speaker 1: and I kind of stopped in part because of the
[5:19] Speaker 1: reason why I have to remind myself sometimes like, oh man,
[5:22] Speaker 1: it's Martin Luther King Day.
[5:23] Speaker 2: You know, you got something else on that.
[5:25] Speaker 1: Because it felt to a degree like I was saying
[5:27] Speaker 1: something new every year. And I try my best for
[5:30] Speaker 1: those of y'all who are like dedicated to the squad.
[5:33] Speaker 1: I kind of try my best not to repeat myself.
[5:36] Speaker 2: And I guess in a way, It can feel a
[5:39] Speaker 2: little bit. I don't know.
[5:42] Speaker 1: I don't I don't want to say it felt like
[5:44] Speaker 1: there was no point, but it becomes somewhat difficult when
[5:49] Speaker 1: it's just like, OK, so what's the new angle that
[5:52] Speaker 1: I'm supposed to come up with about this? There's no
[5:55] Speaker 1: point that I can make that hasn't been made before.
[6:01] Speaker 1: But at the same time, this motherfucker still ain't listening. Therefore,
[6:05] Speaker 1: maybe I just need to keep making it. I don't
[6:08] Speaker 1: know exactly what it is that we are supposed to
[6:12] Speaker 1: do on this one. Now, I have always felt that collectively,
[6:17] Speaker 1: we do a terrible job in discussing this.
[6:20] Speaker 2: On one hand, it's the, you should.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Just hire the best candidate.
[6:26] Speaker 3: Okay.
[6:27] Speaker 2: You should be able to hire whoever you want. Not quite.
[6:31] Speaker 4: Right.
[6:32] Speaker 1: And then we get to the flip side of this,
[6:34] Speaker 1: which is, you know, people on the other side.
[6:36] Speaker 2: They're just sick of it.
[6:39] Speaker 5: Right.
[6:39] Speaker 1: And it could be put in italics and it could
[6:42] Speaker 1: refer to many different things. But the bottom line is
[6:46] Speaker 1: there's a little sick of it.
[6:47] Speaker 4: Right.
[6:48] Speaker 2: Well, what was the the sign that woman had?
[6:51] Speaker 1: I forget. It was maybe 10 years ago during one
[6:53] Speaker 1: of the protests. I was like, I can't believe I
[6:55] Speaker 1: still got to protest this shit.
[6:56] Speaker 3: Right.
[6:57] Speaker 1: Right. This feels very similar when it comes to the
[7:01] Speaker 1: Rooney Rule. Now, to me, there are a couple of
[7:03] Speaker 1: worrisome things or patterns, we should say, or events that
[7:06] Speaker 1: have happened in this. Number one, they used to do
[7:09] Speaker 1: this kind of like speed dating event. I can't remember
[7:13] Speaker 1: exactly what the name is, but it would get a
[7:16] Speaker 1: bunch of coaches and a bunch of people who work
[7:19] Speaker 1: with teams in the same room, and they would just
[7:21] Speaker 1: kind of bounce from table to table and basically do
[7:25] Speaker 1: speed dating to introduce themselves to the people who were
[7:28] Speaker 1: in charge. And the argument behind it was that there
[7:32] Speaker 1: are social networks at place that these black coaches do
[7:35] Speaker 1: not get into. And therefore they don't have the opportunities
[7:40] Speaker 1: to get FaceTime with these executives and to meet them.
[7:43] Speaker 1: So if you put them in these positions to go
[7:46] Speaker 1: around these rooms, then they would have the opportunity to
[7:49] Speaker 1: meet these people. And I guess to a degree that
[7:52] Speaker 1: made sense about my question on the other end was,
[7:54] Speaker 1: I don't have a full understanding of how it is
[7:56] Speaker 1: the white people were winding up meeting these same folks.
[8:01] Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? Like, Yeah, we get it
[8:04] Speaker 1: that social networks, race can be a barrier to entry
[8:09] Speaker 1: into these social networks. But end of the day, you
[8:11] Speaker 1: a quality control man at one of these teams, we
[8:14] Speaker 1: need to talk more about how it is that this
[8:15] Speaker 1: white man gets to meet who the man is at
[8:17] Speaker 1: the top. Like the speed dating thing, basically, it seems
[8:22] Speaker 1: to me to imply a different argument. It's not even
[8:25] Speaker 1: the argument of, hey, man, white people feel more comfortable
[8:29] Speaker 1: with white people. Black people feel more comfortable with black people.
[8:32] Speaker 1: It's not even that argument. It is making the implication
[8:35] Speaker 1: that there is no way for black people to get
[8:38] Speaker 1: known by.
[8:39] Speaker 2: These other people.
[8:40] Speaker 1: And I guess the question I always had about that
[8:43] Speaker 1: was that how they get the jobs that they have
[8:44] Speaker 1: in the first place. Right.
[8:46] Speaker 2: But at least they were trying.
[8:50] Speaker 1: And it felt to me, remember, they made some expansions
[8:52] Speaker 1: on the Rooney Rule, right? You had to interview two
[8:55] Speaker 1: non-white candidates for these head coaching jobs. And you had
[8:59] Speaker 1: to do this also for coordinator jobs. And I noticed,
[9:02] Speaker 1: at least with my own eyes, at least maybe this
[9:04] Speaker 1: was just anecdotal, but it sure felt like we had
[9:07] Speaker 1: more black coordinators or at the very least more black
[9:11] Speaker 1: defensive coordinators. Now, the real barrier had typically been Black
[9:17] Speaker 1: offensive coordinators. And that remains a barrier. And that becomes
[9:21] Speaker 1: an important point that we'll get to. But I did
[9:23] Speaker 1: feel like we were seeing more black defensive coordinators get
[9:27] Speaker 1: that get that job. Like I can name more black
[9:29] Speaker 1: defensive coordinators off the top of my head now than
[9:32] Speaker 1: I probably have at any other point in my life.
[9:36] Speaker 2: Uh Raheem Morris.
[9:37] Speaker 1: Just got the job as defensive coordinator for the 49ers
[9:42] Speaker 1: Kelvin Shepard has the job in Detroit where he replaced
[9:46] Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn who became a head coach was basically his
[9:49] Speaker 1: own defensive coordinator uh Zach Orr was the defensive coordinator
[9:52] Speaker 1: in Baltimore he's going to wind up it looks like
[9:54] Speaker 1: making a move to get another gig The dude at Carolina,
[9:58] Speaker 1: the Nigerian cat.
[9:59] Speaker 2: I don't remember how to say his name.
[10:01] Speaker 1: There's him. There's Vance Joseph in Denver, who is their
[10:06] Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. I'm not saying that my ability to name
[10:09] Speaker 1: these five guys has completely changed the world. I am
[10:14] Speaker 1: saying that I couldn't always name five guys. All right.
[10:20] Speaker 1: There is a measure of progress in that that I
[10:24] Speaker 1: think is important to note. I also think that it
[10:27] Speaker 1: is important to note that while of these 10, none
[10:31] Speaker 1: were black. Ryan, you help me out if I'm missing
[10:33] Speaker 1: anybody here, but I've got Aaron Glenn, Ty Bowles, I
[10:39] Speaker 1: guess Mike Tomlin just left of his own volition, but
[10:42] Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn, Ty Bowles.
[10:45] Speaker 3: D'Amico Ryans.
[10:46] Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryans, damn, is that everybody?
[10:49] Speaker 3: That might be everybody.
[10:50] Speaker 1: Damn, I was actually hoping to do this with a
[10:53] Speaker 1: little bit more of a flourish. I didn't expect this
[10:57] Speaker 1: to go away. Yeah, well, I mean, the other problem
[11:00] Speaker 1: that happens is when you fire the black coach, unless
[11:03] Speaker 1: they try to save money, they ain't going to hire
[11:05] Speaker 1: another one. Right? Like the Texans got super, well, no,
[11:10] Speaker 1: the Texans had that thing where they were so sorry
[11:12] Speaker 1: only a black man would take that job. Remember when
[11:14] Speaker 1: they hired the dude that nobody had ever heard of?
[11:18] Speaker 1: And then they hired Lovey Smith, who nobody else would hire.
[11:21] Speaker 1: But then they did hire D'Amico Ryans. And we're fortunate
[11:24] Speaker 1: that he was willing to take the job. They had
[11:26] Speaker 1: a wife from Houston. And if you know anything about
[11:28] Speaker 1: people from Houston, they always ready to get right back, right?
[11:33] Speaker 1: That worked out well. You see how that is going
[11:36] Speaker 1: for them, right? I think it's important at every step
[11:41] Speaker 1: to acknowledge what is the case and not get quite
[11:44] Speaker 1: as locked into what is not the case. All right. Now,
[11:48] Speaker 1: the issue is with only those three. And if any
[11:51] Speaker 1: of them wind up like Todd Bowles, how much longer
[11:53] Speaker 1: are you going to be able to keep that job,
[11:54] Speaker 1: for example? Right.
[11:56] Speaker 3: Yeah. On the hot seat this year.
[11:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Aaron Glenn. Let me tell you something.
[12:02] Speaker 1: If I was in the business of arguing that racism
[12:05] Speaker 1: was over, which I will never be in the business of,
[12:07] Speaker 1: but if I was in that business, Aaron Glenn is
[12:10] Speaker 1: getting to go to year two.
[12:13] Speaker 3: And he fired his whole staff, like his whole offensive staff,
[12:16] Speaker 3: like on Thursday.
[12:18] Speaker 1: Look, we both live in this city. We both paid
[12:20] Speaker 1: attention to that team. I would not have called the
[12:25] Speaker 1: NAACP if they had fired Aaron Glenn.
[12:28] Speaker 2: I would not have expended a morsel of capital. On
[12:32] Speaker 2: that one. They looked awful. He did not handle the
[12:36] Speaker 2: job well. All of those things.
[12:38] Speaker 3: I hate to use the Q word, but they quit
[12:41] Speaker 3: around Thanksgiving.
[12:42] Speaker 1: They did quit.
[12:43] Speaker 3: And they had five more football games to play.
[12:45] Speaker 1: They didn't make an interception the whole year.
[12:50] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[12:50] Speaker 2: He got to keep his job.
[12:55] Speaker 3: With Woody Johnson as his owner.
[12:57] Speaker 1: There's... There's something. Woody Johnson, who, by the way, he
[13:01] Speaker 1: hired Sala?
[13:03] Speaker 2: Well, no, he didn't hire Sala.
[13:04] Speaker 1: That happened when he was over there in the UK, right?
[13:08] Speaker 1: It was Ireland. I can't remember which one.
[13:11] Speaker 2: Herm Edwards. That was his guy. He hired him.
[13:14] Speaker 1: And Todd Bowles.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Yep.
[13:18] Speaker 1: You know what Woody Johnson is? Woody Johnson is the coaches. Well,
[13:21] Speaker 1: Bud Adams was the quarterbacks. I don't want to talk
[13:24] Speaker 1: to you about politics, but I got to say, when
[13:26] Speaker 1: you want to make a case for yourself... I kind
[13:29] Speaker 1: of got to stand down for a bit. But the
[13:32] Speaker 1: 10th thing is not, it's, here's what was not encouraging
[13:35] Speaker 1: to me. And Ryan, you and I both, we read
[13:38] Speaker 1: a lot about these things. We pay attention.
[13:41] Speaker 2: There's not a name anymore. Like, remember, Eric B. Enemy
[13:44] Speaker 2: was the name. When is somebody going to give Eric B.
[13:46] Speaker 1: Enemy a job? And I fell off of that because
[13:48] Speaker 1: I was like, they was giving other brothers jobs and
[13:49] Speaker 1: they weren't giving him one. Right. For whatever reason, Mike
[13:52] Speaker 1: Zimmer used to be that guy. Vic Fangio used to
[13:55] Speaker 1: be that guy like white guys. Now, granted, these are
[13:56] Speaker 1: defensive guys, but guys that people like now we just
[13:59] Speaker 1: not giving you this. We don't we don't see a
[14:01] Speaker 1: head coach in you.
[14:02] Speaker 3: Matt Nagy now. Yes.
[14:04] Speaker 1: Yes.
[14:04] Speaker 2: But hey, but he got a chance.
[14:05] Speaker 1: Like that was the thing that made it frustrating with
[14:07] Speaker 1: the enemy is that it felt like every offensive coordinator Andy.
[14:10] Speaker 2: Reid ever had.
[14:11] Speaker 3: Yes.
[14:12] Speaker 1: Got a chance.
[14:13] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[14:13] Speaker 1: Except for this guy, but there's no name. Like there's
[14:16] Speaker 1: nobody that was being pushed and bandied around. And the
[14:20] Speaker 1: reason is right now, you correct me if I'm wrong here,
[14:24] Speaker 1: we're in boy genius mode in terms of the coaches
[14:27] Speaker 1: that people want to hire. Like, so you've got the
[14:31] Speaker 1: John Harbaugh, Mike McCarthy, who I think of their own class, right?
[14:34] Speaker 1: Guys with impeccable resumes, Super Bowl championships, you know, they're
[14:39] Speaker 1: their own thing. But the kind of Shanahan McVay.
[14:43] Speaker 2: Boy genius class is these other guys.
[14:46] Speaker 1: The Kevin Stefanski, Joe Brady, who's not in that same tree,
[14:51] Speaker 1: but you remember when he was the boy genius, right?
[14:54] Speaker 1: Coming off the LSU thing. This has been, he been
[14:57] Speaker 1: boy genius for so long, he's still a boy. Yeah.
[15:00] Speaker 1: He's not 40 yet.
[15:01] Speaker 3: Is he? I think he is. I think Joe Brady
[15:04] Speaker 3: is right at the cusp of 40.
[15:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, because I want to say he was like 32
[15:08] Speaker 1: or 33.
[15:08] Speaker 3: 36.
[15:08] Speaker 1: He's 36.
[15:11] Speaker 2: Right.
[15:12] Speaker 1: You know, Michael LaFleur, Matt LaFleur's brother, but another one
[15:15] Speaker 1: of those McVay guys in that class. Jesse Mentor, though defensive,
[15:21] Speaker 1: kind of sort of in that in that boy genius class.
[15:24] Speaker 2: I don't know that much about the Halfley guy.
[15:26] Speaker 4: Do you?
[15:27] Speaker 3: I mean, he used to coach at Boston. He went
[15:30] Speaker 3: from Boston to Green Bay to Miami, so.
[15:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, but all these guys, like Mike McDaniel was in
[15:35] Speaker 1: the boy genius class. The only black dude right now
[15:39] Speaker 1: that seems to be in the boy genius class is
[15:42] Speaker 1: that Nate Sheilhas guy who's down there with the Rams.
[15:45] Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, somebody going to be real weirded
[15:48] Speaker 1: out when they call him into that interview and he
[15:50] Speaker 1: walks in. They're like, yeah, so where's Mr. Sheilhas?
[15:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, where's Mr. S?
[15:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's like, me.
[15:56] Speaker 1: No, but.
[15:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, he black. S-H-E-E-L-H-A-A-S-E, I believe is how you spell it.
[16:02] Speaker 2: But he a black man, right?
[16:04] Speaker 1: Not everybody going to be, like Mike McDaniel, when he
[16:06] Speaker 1: gets in, Mike McDaniel gets in there and talks about,
[16:07] Speaker 1: as a black man, what you mean?
[16:10] Speaker 2: As a black man, what you talking about? I don't understand.
[16:13] Speaker 1: But that's the place that the black dudes can't get
[16:15] Speaker 1: to is the boy genius class. That's the hard part.
[16:18] Speaker 1: You can get to the really good defensive mind. Like,
[16:21] Speaker 1: so Brian Flores is an interesting case. Now, I've sealed
[16:24] Speaker 1: you many times. I would not hire Brian Flores.
[16:27] Speaker 4: Right.
[16:29] Speaker 1: And by the way, he did get on when he
[16:31] Speaker 1: was kind of seeing his Belichick genius guy.
[16:33] Speaker 2: He got on. It's just he's.
[16:35] Speaker 1: Never for for a slew of reasons, some of which
[16:39] Speaker 1: have to do with coaching, most of which have to
[16:41] Speaker 1: do with personality and one of which is a lawsuit.
[16:45] Speaker 1: He's not going to wind up getting that job. But offense,
[16:48] Speaker 1: we still can't get there. The holdup remains becoming offensive
[16:54] Speaker 1: boy genius guy, or even just offensive coordinator. That remains
[16:59] Speaker 1: the holdup. I don't know, or in my own head,
[17:03] Speaker 1: I don't have mechanics or mechanisms for breaking through that
[17:08] Speaker 1: one particular place. But that's the holdup. Like looking at
[17:12] Speaker 1: these hires, Stefanski, offensive guy. McCarthy, Brady, Munkin, Kubiak, LaFleur.
[17:18] Speaker 1: They lean toward offensive guys because if you have a
[17:21] Speaker 1: very good offensive guy, somebody else is going to try
[17:23] Speaker 1: to hire him and you're going to eventually have to
[17:25] Speaker 1: make him the head coach anyway. That's what the argument becomes, right?
[17:30] Speaker 1: I just know this, and I want to close with
[17:33] Speaker 1: this because I think that this part is very important.
[17:37] Speaker 1: The problem with hiring as it relates to race in
[17:42] Speaker 1: the NFL is not the Rooney rules. The problem is
[17:48] Speaker 1: that not that the Rooney rule is ineffective, okay? That
[17:55] Speaker 1: would be like saying that the problem with cancer is
[17:59] Speaker 1: that you can't fix it with an aspirin. That is
[18:02] Speaker 1: not about the limitations of aspirin. That's about the problem
[18:07] Speaker 1: with cancer. And the NFL has a cancer of racism
[18:13] Speaker 1: when it comes to hiring people at these levels.
[18:17] Speaker 2: The problem is them.
[18:20] Speaker 1: Dan Graziano, my buddy who I like a lot, he
[18:23] Speaker 1: sent a tweet out that says something about how this
[18:25] Speaker 1: was not.
[18:25] Speaker 2: A banner year for the Rooney rule. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[18:29] Speaker 1: And I'm not like I don't chastise Dan for this.
[18:33] Speaker 1: I think he just fell into an error that a
[18:35] Speaker 1: lot of people fall into when it comes to the
[18:37] Speaker 1: phrasing on this. And that is to blame the rule
[18:39] Speaker 1: because nobody wants to blame the white people. The problem
[18:43] Speaker 1: in this case is the white people who do, or
[18:46] Speaker 1: more accurately, do not do some of this hiring. The
[18:50] Speaker 1: issue there is them. The issue is the owners. It's
[18:53] Speaker 1: all these people on top. They are the problem. And
[19:00] Speaker 1: I don't think that we could ever truly have any
[19:03] Speaker 1: measure of solution on this until we are more honest
[19:07] Speaker 1: about who the issue is. The issue is the people
[19:11] Speaker 1: who ultimately decided to enact a Rooney Rule just because
[19:14] Speaker 1: Johnny Cochran, rest in peace, was about to sue them
[19:17] Speaker 1: into the ground.
[19:19] Speaker 2: That is what made them act.
[19:21] Speaker 1: It is only under the threat of litigation that they
[19:23] Speaker 1: will act. Now, what is tricky, as I have said,
[19:26] Speaker 1: are people like, we need to get rid of the
[19:27] Speaker 1: Rooney Rule.
[19:27] Speaker 2: I'm like, no, no, no.
[19:28] Speaker 1: They don't want to do that because they don't want
[19:29] Speaker 1: to wind up back in court. But I don't have
[19:31] Speaker 1: any idea if you can go to court anymore about
[19:33] Speaker 1: race stuff, given the rules of the current regime and
[19:37] Speaker 1: everything else, right? I don't have the answers on that part.
[19:43] Speaker 1: But I just want to remind everybody something that we
[19:47] Speaker 1: often forget or in our phrasing we ignore. I did
[19:53] Speaker 1: an event the other night with my good buddy Howard
[19:56] Speaker 1: Bryant for his book at the Jackie Robinson Museum. And
[20:02] Speaker 1: Jackie Robinson's son David had flown in from Tanzania And
[20:05] Speaker 1: he stood up and he talked about progress and how
[20:08] Speaker 1: sometimes we can talk about how we have not seen
[20:10] Speaker 1: all the progress that we want to see. But there
[20:12] Speaker 1: has been great progress over time. And I think coaching
[20:16] Speaker 1: is an interesting place for that because there has been progress.
[20:20] Speaker 1: Like I was alive for the first black head coach
[20:24] Speaker 1: that we all admitted was black and got a job
[20:28] Speaker 1: in the modern era. And that was Art Shell. Right.
[20:32] Speaker 1: You ever heard of Wayne Fonts?
[20:36] Speaker 3: I have not.
[20:37] Speaker 1: Okay, Wayne Fonts used to coach the Lions. I want
[20:41] Speaker 1: you to look up a picture of Wayne Fonts. Go
[20:45] Speaker 1: ahead and look at it right now.
[20:49] Speaker 3: Yep.
[20:49] Speaker 1: I just want to point out to you that he
[20:51] Speaker 1: became a head coach the year before Art Schell. I
[20:56] Speaker 1: also want to point out to you that Wayne Fonts,
[20:59] Speaker 1: his people are from Cape Verde.
[21:03] Speaker 2: I don't know about you.
[21:04] Speaker 1: But people from Cape Verde are black everywhere else I've
[21:07] Speaker 1: heard of.
[21:08] Speaker 3: That was my understanding as well.
[21:09] Speaker 2: However, somehow he just slipped through.
[21:12] Speaker 1: The pioneer hiding in plain sight.
[21:16] Speaker 2: And he probably still at the house like, man.
[21:17] Speaker 1: If you don't shut your black ass up. Quiet, quiet.
[21:22] Speaker 1: But anyway, I was alive when Art Shell got this.
[21:25] Speaker 1: I have seen stretches where there was six or seven people.
[21:27] Speaker 1: Blackhead coaches. I've seen the Saturdays of the Rooney Rule
[21:30] Speaker 1: where they were out here making moves. I remember when
[21:33] Speaker 1: Tony Dungy got fired in Tampa and Jim Irsay said,
[21:37] Speaker 1: my number one candidate is Tony Dungy and went down
[21:39] Speaker 1: and hired Tony Dungy, right? Things are not what they were.
[21:44] Speaker 1: They are not good enough, but it is important for
[21:47] Speaker 1: those of us who speak on these matters to acknowledge
[21:49] Speaker 1: where things have gotten better, okay? But I brought up
[21:52] Speaker 1: what David Robinson said about progress because I made a
[21:55] Speaker 1: point there that we can never forget is that when
[21:57] Speaker 1: it comes to progress, In this presence of racism, it
[22:02] Speaker 1: is not me and my people who need to make progress.
[22:05] Speaker 1: It is white people that need to make progress. It
[22:08] Speaker 1: is not us who created these circumstances. It is them
[22:12] Speaker 1: who created these circumstances. And they are the ones that
[22:15] Speaker 1: need to do better. And as I say every year
[22:18] Speaker 1: about this, the biggest winner from the Rooney Rule and
[22:22] Speaker 1: breaking down those barriers of racism would be the white people.
[22:28] Speaker 1: One black coach will get a job, okay? Two black
[22:31] Speaker 1: coaches might get a job. But if y'all start hiring
[22:34] Speaker 1: better coaches, by the way, something you've never been good
[22:38] Speaker 1: at is hiring.
[22:38] Speaker 2: Coaches, right?
[22:40] Speaker 1: Y'all should be trying to hire Martians. Y'all should be
[22:42] Speaker 1: trying anything. Like, let me tell you something. If anybody
[22:46] Speaker 1: spent a hundred motherfucking years hiring black people at something
[22:50] Speaker 1: and it didn't work, we get one chance and they
[22:52] Speaker 1: don't hire another one after that. Y'all hire white man
[22:55] Speaker 1: after white man, like the Giants. Y'all hire white men
[23:00] Speaker 1: after white men, after white men, after white men.
[23:02] Speaker 2: It ain't work one.
[23:03] Speaker 1: Time and not once if you said, maybe we should
[23:05] Speaker 1: try something crazy, right? It ain't work for you not once.
[23:10] Speaker 1: Not one person has just been like, fucking call the
[23:13] Speaker 1: black guy.
[23:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm out of answers.
[23:16] Speaker 1: Right. Now, what have you made the decision that maybe
[23:20] Speaker 1: we should just try something out of the box in.
[23:23] Speaker 2: Order to make this happen?
[23:24] Speaker 1: Y'all hired Joe Judge. Y'all out here are special teams
[23:27] Speaker 1: coaches or whatever it is. And not one time because
[23:29] Speaker 1: you say to yourself, maybe we should try something else.
[23:31] Speaker 4: Right.
[23:32] Speaker 1: Y'all would be the winners if you expanded your reach
[23:35] Speaker 1: and maybe got out there and got some good coaches
[23:37] Speaker 1: and made your teams better. Right. It would serve a
[23:41] Speaker 1: black person at a time. It would serve the whole
[23:44] Speaker 1: league if you acted right. We ain't the ones that
[23:48] Speaker 1: need to make progress. They the ones that need to
[23:51] Speaker 1: make progress. So why don't you buck the trend of
[23:54] Speaker 1: American history and do something that would help you out
[23:59] Speaker 1: as opposed to just being dedicated to racism? Because that's
[24:03] Speaker 1: the thing. So many places, so many times. Ryan, you're
[24:06] Speaker 1: an LSU football fan. You're of the age, however, how
[24:09] Speaker 1: you don't remember when LSU was like, no, we just
[24:11] Speaker 1: rather be racist than win.
[24:13] Speaker 3: It was a long time.
[24:15] Speaker 4: Oh, man.
[24:15] Speaker 1: It was the whole SEC.
[24:17] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[24:17] Speaker 2: Except for Alabama.
[24:18] Speaker 1: They were like, hey, buddy.
[24:21] Speaker 2: We ain't going to take all of you, but we'll
[24:23] Speaker 2: take more than them.
[24:24] Speaker 1: Well, what was that?
[24:25] Speaker 2: We will not be out-inverted. I will tell you that.
[24:27] Speaker 1: Texas spent a long time being like, nah, we'd rather
[24:30] Speaker 1: be racist than win football games. Shit, they did it again. Well,
[24:32] Speaker 1: I don't root for them no more.
[24:33] Speaker 2: But that damn song. They were like, nah, we'd rather
[24:36] Speaker 2: be racist.
[24:36] Speaker 1: Ole Miss. you know, our state is 36% black and
[24:40] Speaker 1: black people seem to be very important in these sports.
[24:43] Speaker 2: But now we had these flags that we would rather wave.
[24:47] Speaker 2: That's America.
[24:47] Speaker 3: They'd rather rebel.
[24:49] Speaker 1: Yep. We'd rather, we would literally rather be worse than
[24:54] Speaker 1: do better. That's how this is stacked up at every
[24:57] Speaker 1: turn and they keep on doing it. And I'm just
[25:00] Speaker 1: here to tell you after one more year, Either you
[25:05] Speaker 1: let Kersignetti get somebody else fired, or.
[25:09] Speaker 2: You try something new. All right, we mentioned the NBA
[25:17] Speaker 2: trade deadline is going to be Thursday.
[25:19] Speaker 1: Ryan, you think they're going to get Giannis moved by then?
[25:23] Speaker 3: I sure hope so. I think we've been kind of
[25:28] Speaker 3: teetering and tottering about it for two and a half
[25:30] Speaker 3: years now, and I don't know if we can do
[25:32] Speaker 3: another six months of it.
[25:33] Speaker 1: He's getting it. He's not getting bad advice. I think
[25:37] Speaker 1: he's actually getting pretty good advice. He, however, when you
[25:41] Speaker 1: got to pick people, like, to emulate as an NBA superstar,
[25:46] Speaker 1: it's a long list of guys that you could choose.
[25:49] Speaker 1: You could choose to emulate Michael Jordan. You could choose
[25:52] Speaker 1: to emulate LeBron James. You want to kick it old school,
[25:55] Speaker 1: you could emulate Bill Russell. You know, it's a lot
[25:58] Speaker 1: of guys, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, that you could look
[26:01] Speaker 1: at and be like, yeah, I want to kick it
[26:03] Speaker 1: like they did, right? That'll get me to where I
[26:05] Speaker 1: want to be. I would argue that kicking it like
[26:10] Speaker 1: Dwight Howard is not what I would recommend.
[26:16] Speaker 6: Okay?
[26:18] Speaker 1: If you are outside of the paint on defense, I
[26:23] Speaker 1: don't think that emulating Dwight Howard is the way to go.
[26:28] Speaker 1: And Giannis is... apparently playing the full-on Dwight Howard role
[26:37] Speaker 1: on his way out of town. And he needs to
[26:41] Speaker 1: remember that that ended for Dwight Howard in being roundly
[26:49] Speaker 1: disliked after being pretty universally beloved for.
[26:57] Speaker 2: About eight years. But that's what we got here.
[27:02] Speaker 1: Now, for those of you who don't remember this, and
[27:06] Speaker 1: let's be clear, Dwight handled this a lot worse.
[27:10] Speaker 2: Dwight.
[27:12] Speaker 1: was set to be a free agent in Orlando. But
[27:17] Speaker 1: he wasn't going to be a free agent because his
[27:19] Speaker 1: contract was going to expire. He had a player option
[27:24] Speaker 1: to get out of his deal. And this is years
[27:27] Speaker 1: after they had been to the finals. The Magic are
[27:29] Speaker 1: not really competitive in that way. It had long been forecast.
[27:35] Speaker 1: that he was going to wind up being the next
[27:37] Speaker 1: great big man to wind up going to play for
[27:40] Speaker 1: the Lakers, following in the footsteps of Will Chamberlain, um,
[27:43] Speaker 1: and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And we all knew this, but every
[27:47] Speaker 1: interview with Dwight was about how Dwight loved Orlando and
[27:51] Speaker 1: he's torn. And, you know, he doesn't really know what
[27:53] Speaker 1: to do, or he really loves Orlando, so forth and
[27:55] Speaker 1: so on everything else. But we all understood that Dwight
[27:59] Speaker 1: wanted to get out of there. Um, And I'm trying
[28:03] Speaker 1: to remember the exact order of events.
[28:05] Speaker 2: Ryan, do you remember.
[28:06] Speaker 1: If he opted? No, he must have opted in after
[28:09] Speaker 1: the weird Stan Van Gundy press conference. Stan Van Gundy
[28:12] Speaker 1: got in front of us and told us that Dwight
[28:14] Speaker 1: was trying to get him fired.
[28:16] Speaker 3: I think he opted. It was all within... like a
[28:19] Speaker 3: 48-hour trade deadline window. So he like opted in. I
[28:23] Speaker 3: think he opted in, then tried to get, and then
[28:25] Speaker 3: the press conference happened.
[28:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a lot going on. But basically, for
[28:28] Speaker 1: those who don't remember, Stan Van Gundy's doing this press
[28:30] Speaker 1: conference where he's talking about how he's literally sick of
[28:33] Speaker 1: the bullshit that's going on and that he knows that
[28:35] Speaker 1: Dwight has tried to get him fired. And while he's
[28:38] Speaker 1: standing there saying this, Dwight comes and put his arm
[28:41] Speaker 1: around him We're all fine.
[28:43] Speaker 2: Everything's okay.
[28:44] Speaker 1: People act like we got problems. There are no problems.
[28:47] Speaker 1: And he has no idea that Stan just told everybody,
[28:51] Speaker 1: this dude's trying to get me fired. And then Stan
[28:54] Speaker 1: walked away and left him standing there to look like
[28:57] Speaker 1: a fool and nothing was the same. Then he went
[29:00] Speaker 1: and played with Kobe and Kobe did him no favors
[29:05] Speaker 1: and nothing has ever been the same.
[29:07] Speaker 2: But what ultimately went down is we viewed Dwight as
[29:10] Speaker 2: a phony from that moment on.
[29:13] Speaker 1: And I think what bothered people was everybody would have
[29:16] Speaker 1: understood if he wanted to.
[29:18] Speaker 2: Get out of town, right?
[29:19] Speaker 1: No matter what he had said before about how he
[29:22] Speaker 1: wanted to stay there forever, dah, dah, dah.
[29:24] Speaker 2: In the end, people understand things change.
[29:26] Speaker 1: Look at the divorce rate, right?
[29:29] Speaker 3: And not just change, change and go to the Lakers,
[29:31] Speaker 3: which is a tale as long as the NBA Yes.
[29:34] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[29:34] Speaker 1: But just even if it's not the Lakers, just get
[29:36] Speaker 1: me out of here.
[29:36] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[29:37] Speaker 1: I don't want to play here anymore. It was an
[29:41] Speaker 1: understandable thing. Now the trick bag for him is that
[29:44] Speaker 1: they hadn't won a championship there.
[29:46] Speaker 3: Right.
[29:46] Speaker 1: So you can make the argument of unfinished business. But
[29:48] Speaker 1: he had gotten them to the finals. He got them
[29:50] Speaker 1: to the finals on a team where the second best
[29:52] Speaker 1: player was either Hidu Turkoglu or Rashard Lewis. Right. Got
[29:55] Speaker 1: up with getting LeBron James out of there.
[29:57] Speaker 2: The best postseason version of LeBron we have ever seen.
[30:01] Speaker 1: And he got him out of there in six games.
[30:03] Speaker 4: Right.
[30:04] Speaker 2: In that one.
[30:04] Speaker 1: It took superhuman LeBron-ness to even stretch it to six.
[30:08] Speaker 3: Right.
[30:10] Speaker 1: But he looked phony. And people are like, dude, why
[30:14] Speaker 1: you keep lying to us when we know what time
[30:16] Speaker 1: it is with you? And that is exactly what is
[30:18] Speaker 1: happening with Giannis. And it is a very similar story. Now,
[30:20] Speaker 1: Dwight was the number one pick in the draft, but
[30:22] Speaker 1: they both kind of had this all shucks sort of charm. Right.
[30:27] Speaker 1: They kind of had a you know, they're the guys
[30:28] Speaker 1: that want to do the right thing. They they they
[30:31] Speaker 1: are seen as being moral white hats, basically, in this
[30:35] Speaker 1: league in a number of ways. Dwight was wrapped up
[30:38] Speaker 1: in Jesus. Giannis has like a real life. He got
[30:42] Speaker 1: an immigrant story to go with the immigrant story. Man,
[30:46] Speaker 1: man didn't have no, he was a man went out
[30:48] Speaker 1: of state in Greece with no passport. Couldn't get a
[30:51] Speaker 1: passport till he came here. That Attentacupo, that's not his name.
[30:55] Speaker 1: That's how the Greeks decided to re-spell his name when
[30:57] Speaker 1: they finally decided to give him.
[30:58] Speaker 2: A passport, right?
[31:00] Speaker 1: Like he had to live a life where he wasn't
[31:01] Speaker 1: even under his own name, where he had no country
[31:04] Speaker 1: to truly call his own. He comes over here and
[31:07] Speaker 1: is one of the most amazing NBA stories that we've
[31:10] Speaker 1: ever had.
[31:11] Speaker 2: In the ascent.
[31:13] Speaker 1: He won that championship and buddy, nobody stretching that one
[31:17] Speaker 1: ring out farther than he is. I used to say
[31:19] Speaker 1: that Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce were getting the most
[31:22] Speaker 1: mileage out of their one ring out of anybody else,
[31:26] Speaker 1: just in the ways it changes your reputation, right? Like
[31:29] Speaker 1: it allows us to think of Dirk as maybe a
[31:32] Speaker 1: top 15 all-time player, but more importantly, not as a
[31:35] Speaker 1: soft Euro. It allows Paul Pierce into some different conversations,
[31:40] Speaker 1: but with Giannis, But like this, if Paul Pierce never
[31:44] Speaker 1: won a championship, we would not sit around talking about
[31:46] Speaker 1: what Paul Pierce was not.
[31:48] Speaker 2: We wouldn't do that.
[31:49] Speaker 1: Giannis is at that superstar caliber, the same way Dirk was,
[31:53] Speaker 1: where we would be talking about what you're not, right?
[31:56] Speaker 1: There has been a point where you've been the best
[31:58] Speaker 1: player in the NBA. There's an argument that Dirk Nowitzki
[32:00] Speaker 1: had that stretch also. But not only you've lost as
[32:04] Speaker 1: an eight seed, as a one seed to an eight seed,
[32:07] Speaker 1: which by the way, also in the Dirk Nowitzki playbook,
[32:10] Speaker 1: There's the blown 2-0 lead in 2019. I mean, there's
[32:13] Speaker 1: some really embarrassing postseason losses for Giannis along the way.
[32:18] Speaker 1: And we let them slide because he already got that championship.
[32:23] Speaker 4: Right.
[32:24] Speaker 1: But it's hard to overcome the label of being phony.
[32:27] Speaker 1: And the truth is you want out of there. We
[32:30] Speaker 1: all understand that you don't want to want out of there.
[32:34] Speaker 1: But you do. Does that make sense?
[32:36] Speaker 3: Yes. You don't want to want to leave, but you
[32:40] Speaker 3: want to leave.
[32:40] Speaker 1: Yeah. And look, they've done all the things to try
[32:43] Speaker 1: to keep you there. And you don't want to feel
[32:45] Speaker 1: like they did all those things in vain. But they
[32:47] Speaker 1: did all the things to try to keep you there.
[32:50] Speaker 1: And you are still playing at a level that we
[32:52] Speaker 1: would think of as MVP caliber basketball in a world
[32:55] Speaker 1: that didn't have Shea Gilders, Alexander and Jokic who's coming back.
[32:58] Speaker 4: Right.
[32:59] Speaker 2: We all get that.
[33:01] Speaker 1: But you got to stop telling us or stop pretending
[33:04] Speaker 1: like this isn't what it is. You want to go,
[33:06] Speaker 1: you're going to have to be the bad guy, right
[33:08] Speaker 1: fast and go. The truth is, if you had leveled
[33:11] Speaker 1: with all those people there and been like, look, I've
[33:14] Speaker 1: done everything I can here, but I think it's time
[33:17] Speaker 1: for me to go somewhere else. I think the people
[33:20] Speaker 1: in Milwaukee, because they got the ring, would then understand.
[33:24] Speaker 1: They see what's happened for the team. They want to
[33:27] Speaker 1: move into the future. They could talk about getting some
[33:29] Speaker 1: picks and everything else. They would ultimately be okay with you,
[33:32] Speaker 1: even if they were mad at you for a little while.
[33:34] Speaker 1: Case in point, they love LeBron again in Cleveland. Right?
[33:40] Speaker 1: And he embarrassed them in front of America.
[33:43] Speaker 2: You could be fine, but you just got to go ahead.
[33:47] Speaker 1: And own that part and be straight ahead with it.
[33:49] Speaker 1: Now for you, maybe it's too late, right? The thing
[33:53] Speaker 1: that I'm looking at, Ryan, I keep seeing these trade
[33:55] Speaker 1: packages that people say that the Bucs can get, and
[33:57] Speaker 1: I don't know about none of them.
[33:59] Speaker 3: Especially the ones for the teams he's rumored to want
[34:02] Speaker 3: to go to.
[34:02] Speaker 1: So the rumors are that he wants to go to,
[34:04] Speaker 1: and I've been told this, Minnesota, New York, and Miami.
[34:11] Speaker 1: I don't think Miami turns into a winner necessarily. You
[34:15] Speaker 1: do that if you believe.
[34:16] Speaker 2: In Pat Riley.
[34:17] Speaker 1: Right, which.
[34:18] Speaker 3: Who's getting up there.
[34:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, in 2026, I don't know about that, right?
[34:23] Speaker 1: But I would be terrified of what you do against
[34:25] Speaker 1: a team if you got Bam and Giannis.
[34:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, good luck.
[34:29] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
[34:29] Speaker 1: How are you guys going to score? Okay, that's the
[34:32] Speaker 1: Nigeria going to be all. That's the Nigeria squad right there.
[34:36] Speaker 1: You know, they need to move. They can only be
[34:38] Speaker 1: more Nigerian if they played in Houston. That would be
[34:41] Speaker 1: the only way. Minnesota, a bit surprising that that's where
[34:47] Speaker 1: he says he.
[34:48] Speaker 2: Might want to go.
[34:50] Speaker 1: New York, they'll love him here because I've been telling
[34:55] Speaker 1: people this, that at some point people in this city
[34:57] Speaker 1: were going to realize they didn't like Carl.
[34:59] Speaker 2: Towns' game.
[35:02] Speaker 3: Took about what, 15 months?
[35:04] Speaker 1: A year and a half.
[35:05] Speaker 2: You live here with me. It has happened. Even with
[35:08] Speaker 2: the missed.
[35:08] Speaker 1: Free throws, they'll love Giannis' game.
[35:10] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[35:11] Speaker 1: Giannis plays hard. Giannis plays tough. Giannis is not afraid
[35:14] Speaker 1: of being embarrassed. Right?
[35:16] Speaker 2: Like all of those things.
[35:18] Speaker 1: And if you put him there with, say, Jalen Bruncie,
[35:20] Speaker 1: you got somebody to take the big shots so you
[35:22] Speaker 1: don't have to worry about the free throw.
[35:24] Speaker 4: Right.
[35:24] Speaker 2: Situation.
[35:24] Speaker 1: Like you've got the parts that are there. I think,
[35:28] Speaker 1: and I've said on this show many times, that I
[35:30] Speaker 1: think for a lot of these guys, the game down
[35:31] Speaker 1: the line is just going to be stay where you are.
[35:35] Speaker 3: Right.
[35:36] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Just stay where you are
[35:38] Speaker 1: because of it's so hard to do anything with these
[35:40] Speaker 1: aprons and everything else.
[35:42] Speaker 2: You probably got you might as well.
[35:44] Speaker 1: The idea that you're going to go somewhere and now
[35:46] Speaker 1: you'll be a champion in a couple of years is
[35:48] Speaker 1: going to be impossible for you again.
[35:50] Speaker 4: Right.
[35:50] Speaker 1: You might be better off just staying where you are.
[35:53] Speaker 1: But there are no the oh, my God, it's so hard, man.
[35:56] Speaker 1: Don't nobody want to hear that shit, man. Either I'm
[35:58] Speaker 1: staying or I need to go. But you can't... Because
[36:03] Speaker 1: didn't he be hitting us with the, I don't know
[36:04] Speaker 1: where all these rumors are coming from? Yes, you do.
[36:08] Speaker 1: That's the one that people don't want to hear. I
[36:11] Speaker 1: don't understand why people keep... Yes, you do, right? Carmelo
[36:17] Speaker 1: is a great example. He got ugly at the end
[36:19] Speaker 1: with Denver. And I've said this many times, the fact
[36:22] Speaker 1: that Denver gave his number away is the pettiest thing
[36:25] Speaker 1: in the world. They did it, but they did it
[36:27] Speaker 1: multiple times. It's ridiculous that they did that.
[36:30] Speaker 2: But Melo... never acted like he didn't want to leave.
[36:35] Speaker 2: He never did.
[36:37] Speaker 1: And I think that part in the moment bothered people,
[36:40] Speaker 1: but I think you have to look back on it
[36:41] Speaker 1: like it was actually fairly admirable.
[36:43] Speaker 2: Like, look, man, this is the thing I want to
[36:46] Speaker 2: do right now. I also want to get all my money.
[36:48] Speaker 4: Right.
[36:49] Speaker 3: Also admirable.
[36:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I also want to get all my money, which, again,
[36:53] Speaker 1: that was the issue, is that he wanted to get
[36:55] Speaker 1: all his money and make the move. Denver got a
[36:57] Speaker 1: great trade package for him, too. But if you want
[37:00] Speaker 1: to go, go. We may not get it at first,
[37:04] Speaker 1: but we're grown. We've been doing this for a while.
[37:08] Speaker 1: If you want to go, go. But you don't want
[37:11] Speaker 1: people saying you a phony. And that's what we're going
[37:14] Speaker 1: to say based on the way that he has acted.
[37:18] Speaker 1: And eventually people will get over it, but you got
[37:21] Speaker 1: nobody to blame for it but himself. It's the last
[37:29] Speaker 1: call for football on FanDuel. One final Sunday, one last kickoff,
[37:35] Speaker 1: the final chance to place your bets before the NFL season.
[37:38] Speaker 2: Closes its tab.
[37:39] Speaker 1: This is Super Bowl 60, and FanDuel is making sure
[37:42] Speaker 1: you're in on it. If you're a new customer, bet

[37:49] Speaker 1: So whether you're backing the favorite or riding with the underdog,
[37:53] Speaker 1: make it count. Because after the Super Bowl, the season's

[39:03] Speaker 3: All right, both some more stories from the weekend. Speaking
[39:05] Speaker 3: of NFL owners and malfeasance, a giant's code or Steve
[39:09] Speaker 3: Tish has been named in the latest Epstein files. His
[39:12] Speaker 3: name appears at least 440 times in the latest documents.
[39:17] Speaker 3: Released co-owner and vice president of the Giants. Ironically, also
[39:22] Speaker 3: produced a film called Risky Business, which is about underage
[39:27] Speaker 3: people looking for sex. Beau, what was your reaction to that? news?
[39:30] Speaker 2: Okay, so the Epstein files are media gold.
[39:37] Speaker 1: And the reason that I say media gold is that
[39:40] Speaker 1: everybody's in them. Like no matter what kind of website
[39:44] Speaker 1: you got, You have something that you can attach to
[39:47] Speaker 1: the Epstein files, and then boom, it.
[39:50] Speaker 2: Gets posted, right? Pusha T got his name tied up.
[39:55] Speaker 2: How does Pusha T know him?
[39:59] Speaker 4: Right.
[40:01] Speaker 3: In what world do Pusha T and Mr. Epstein... Yeah, yeah.
[40:04] Speaker 1: Like, what is this? So, like, we got Jay-Z there. Like,
[40:07] Speaker 1: the rappers get involved in this. Bill Gates, who... ooh,
[40:12] Speaker 1: it's a good thing he's already divorced.
[40:14] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[40:14] Speaker 2: Because otherwise it would be a wrap.
[40:16] Speaker 3: Owners in multiple leagues?
[40:18] Speaker 2: Yes.
[40:18] Speaker 3: Including ones that aren't here?
[40:21] Speaker 2: All over the place.
[40:23] Speaker 1: Everybody's name is tied in this in some form or fashion. Now,
[40:26] Speaker 1: part of what's interesting about this is, though, is that Tish,
[40:29] Speaker 1: who is the co-owner of the Giants, I can't explain
[40:32] Speaker 1: to y'all, if you are not in New York, how
[40:33] Speaker 1: rich Tish is, right? Like the Tish name is. What
[40:38] Speaker 1: that means. Like Ryan was like, what's the first thing
[40:39] Speaker 1: you think about with Tish? And I had three. I
[40:42] Speaker 1: got his first one, which is his name is all
[40:43] Speaker 1: over NYU stuff, right? Hospitals and the likes. What is that?
[40:47] Speaker 1: A niece or a granddaughter or something? That's the police commissioner.
[40:51] Speaker 1: I can't tell which. Then there was another thing that
[40:54] Speaker 1: we had.
[40:55] Speaker 3: The Met.
[40:55] Speaker 2: The Met. You go to the Met, you'll see the
[40:58] Speaker 2: Tish name all over the walls.
[41:00] Speaker 1: Like these guys, what can Roger Goodell do or any
[41:05] Speaker 1: of these people do?
[41:06] Speaker 2: Because- Tish's name is in the emails.
[41:10] Speaker 1: The guys that are in bad shape in the emails
[41:13] Speaker 1: are the guys in the emails after Epstein had already
[41:17] Speaker 1: been busted for.
[41:20] Speaker 2: Putting girls on the stroll. And you still emailing him
[41:24] Speaker 2: about girls, right?
[41:26] Speaker 1: Like, are they treating that like he had a local
[41:28] Speaker 1: bodega and they caught him up selling cigarettes from Virginia?
[41:32] Speaker 2: And you're like, oh yeah, but I pay full price.
[41:36] Speaker 4: Right?
[41:37] Speaker 1: Like, is that the explanation or the justification that you
[41:40] Speaker 1: have for still dealing? Because I was like, after you
[41:43] Speaker 1: get caught with that, partner, we can't. I got partners
[41:46] Speaker 1: I done had to cut off for less than that.
[41:49] Speaker 4: Right?
[41:49] Speaker 1: Like, hey, hey, hey, hey, we can't do that. But
[41:51] Speaker 1: y'all still go.
[41:52] Speaker 2: To this man to get girls. Like that is what
[41:55] Speaker 2: these reports are saying.
[41:56] Speaker 1: And you are tied up in this just like all
[41:59] Speaker 1: these other people are tied up in this. And I
[42:02] Speaker 1: don't know ultimately what's going to happen.
[42:04] Speaker 2: With any of these guys.
[42:05] Speaker 1: I don't think there's any like legal consequences that are
[42:08] Speaker 1: going to come down to it. And I also think
[42:10] Speaker 1: that it's going to be so many people who get
[42:12] Speaker 1: caught up in it and their names get out there
[42:15] Speaker 1: that we're not going to really be able to remember
[42:17] Speaker 1: because there's nobody's going to have the time to.
[42:19] Speaker 2: Do the follow-ups about those things, right?
[42:23] Speaker 1: It's just going to be embarrassing and shameful in part
[42:27] Speaker 1: because most journalistic entities don't even have the ability to
[42:30] Speaker 1: like dig deeper to find out what's really going on
[42:34] Speaker 1: with a lot of them.
[42:36] Speaker 3: Right. And we, we have not said the name of the,
[42:39] Speaker 3: we talked about all these people when we have not
[42:41] Speaker 3: said the president and the richest person in the world.
[42:43] Speaker 3: That is true.
[42:44] Speaker 1: That is true. They are there. Right. But let me
[42:47] Speaker 1: hit you with a, however, this is a very important
[42:49] Speaker 1: thing for all these guys. Because everybody wants there to
[42:52] Speaker 1: be some punishment, right? Everybody wants something to happen to
[42:56] Speaker 1: these dudes. And I don't think anything is going to
[43:00] Speaker 1: get anybody put in jail or anything like that. But
[43:03] Speaker 1: there's a different kind of jail that you can go to.
[43:06] Speaker 1: It's not the one with the bars and the jumpsuits
[43:10] Speaker 1: and the terrible food. It's the one that can be
[43:13] Speaker 1: your home. That can be your home when your wife
[43:17] Speaker 1: reads that you've been emailing this dude. about hollering at girls.
[43:24] Speaker 1: All these dudes have had to go home to explain
[43:28] Speaker 1: how it is that they got caught up in this.
[43:33] Speaker 1: Every single one of them has had to do that.
[43:36] Speaker 1: And it ain't going good for not a single one
[43:43] Speaker 1: of them. The only guy that seems to have a
[43:46] Speaker 1: good explanation is Russell Wilson. Hey, man, I was just
[43:49] Speaker 1: trying to buy a plane.
[43:52] Speaker 2: I ain't even know. I ain't never met that.
[43:54] Speaker 1: Hell, no, no, no, no, no. Russ got out in
[43:57] Speaker 1: front of that. Russ was like, hey, baby, I was
[43:59] Speaker 1: just trying to buy a plane. Yeah, that man ain't
[44:00] Speaker 1: trying to mess with me.
[44:02] Speaker 3: Trying to buy you a plane.
[44:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, yeah.
[44:06] Speaker 2: It was supposed to be a surprise.
[44:12] Speaker 3: All right, speaking of things in free fall, Bitcoin has...
[44:15] Speaker 3: really tanked in the last week. The digital coin has
[44:17] Speaker 3: fallen about 12% in the last seven days, wiping off
[44:20] Speaker 3: about $ 200 billion in value, now under $ 80, 000. Bo, what
[44:26] Speaker 3: was your reaction to this news?
[44:28] Speaker 1: Look, man, I don't even really think about funny money
[44:30] Speaker 1: no more. Like, I forgot that after, you remember the
[44:33] Speaker 1: year old funny money?
[44:34] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[44:35] Speaker 1: 2022, that was the year, that was when funny money
[44:38] Speaker 1: really had its time. The funny money Super Bowl, fortune
[44:42] Speaker 1: favors the brave. and everything else. But the truth is,
[44:47] Speaker 1: people were still going about their funny money. It just
[44:49] Speaker 1: stopped being like a fad. Remember NFTs?
[44:54] Speaker 3: I do remember NFTs.
[44:55] Speaker 1: I watched a documentary on Netflix the other day about
[44:58] Speaker 1: like the run on NFTs. We were bored. Like 2021, man,
[45:03] Speaker 1: people were bored and they just thought it was going
[45:05] Speaker 1: to hit for a lick, right? The thing with the
[45:08] Speaker 1: Bitcoin stuff always is, man, it'll have another jump up.
[45:11] Speaker 1: It'll have another drop. But my issue with funny money
[45:15] Speaker 1: has always been no one can really explain the determinants
[45:18] Speaker 1: of price. What's going to make these things go? And
[45:22] Speaker 1: it is a cult of people who just decide that
[45:24] Speaker 1: once they do it, they're going to get on it.
[45:25] Speaker 1: They're going to stay on it. It's never going to stop.
[45:28] Speaker 1: That's the ride they are on. And so I don't
[45:31] Speaker 1: even really think that much about it no more when
[45:33] Speaker 1: people get caught up in funny money.
[45:34] Speaker 2: Y'all decided to do this.
[45:35] Speaker 1: Now, if you knew and just woke up and was like,
[45:37] Speaker 1: I think I'm going to get on this Bitcoin thing.
[45:39] Speaker 2: You deserve everything you get. The rest of y'all? Hey, man,
[45:42] Speaker 2: this is the ride you chose to sign up for.
[45:44] Speaker 2: I hope you have a good time.
[45:46] Speaker 1: All right.
[45:46] Speaker 3: And finally, the Grammys were last night. Kendrick Lamar became
[45:50] Speaker 3: the most decorated rapper in the history of the Grammys.
[45:54] Speaker 3: Bad Bunny had some comments, you know, condemning Ice. Lauryn
[45:59] Speaker 3: Hill showed up. What was your biggest surprise.
[46:02] Speaker 4: From the night?
[46:06] Speaker 1: Lauryn Hill. What time did they tell her to show up?
[46:10] Speaker 1: Because it appears that she was on time. Did they
[46:14] Speaker 1: tell her the show was the night before? Or did
[46:17] Speaker 1: they tell her that they needed to do a sound
[46:18] Speaker 1: check at 11 in the morning and then you just
[46:20] Speaker 1: kept coming up.
[46:21] Speaker 2: With reasons for her not to leave?
[46:24] Speaker 1: There's no way in the world that I personally would
[46:27] Speaker 1: be doing a live television show and book Lauryn Hill
[46:29] Speaker 1: to do it. There's no chance.
[46:32] Speaker 3: I'm stressed out just thinking about it.
[46:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the chakras and the shit ain't in line,
[46:36] Speaker 2: so she ain't coming to work. You can never pay
[46:38] Speaker 2: me enough to set her up there.
[46:40] Speaker 1: The tribute was actually very good, and I appreciated the
[46:43] Speaker 1: fact that I didn't think they got too locked in
[46:47] Speaker 1: on how big the names were. They had a lot
[46:51] Speaker 1: of people that I'm aware of, but I don't think
[46:53] Speaker 1: are giant stars. Bringing Layla Hathaway in to sing a
[46:56] Speaker 1: daddy's part, I thought was a good thing. But the
[46:58] Speaker 1: biggest surprise to me is that Wyclef pulled up. I
[47:01] Speaker 1: suppose I remember that Roz couldn't show up because he's
[47:04] Speaker 1: been sentenced to 14 years in the Bing. But Wyclef
[47:08] Speaker 1: showing up, I didn't know them two could still be
[47:10] Speaker 1: in the same room. I thought that was very nice
[47:12] Speaker 1: of her to come because he served no purpose in that.
[47:15] Speaker 2: We didn't need him for anything. on that performance.
[47:19] Speaker 1: But I thought they got it, right? I thought they
[47:23] Speaker 1: did a very good job of it, and I appreciated
[47:26] Speaker 1: that they gave D'Angelo a full 11-minute tribute there, right?
[47:33] Speaker 1: That's what you give to the stars of a real
[47:36] Speaker 1: particular magnitude. They gave it to him. I thought that
[47:39] Speaker 1: was cool. I thought the Kendrick Lamar thing, where it
[47:42] Speaker 1: turns out now he has more Grammys than any rapper ever,
[47:47] Speaker 1: and I don't remember the exact Drake line because I
[47:50] Speaker 1: don't be memorizing Drake lines, but basically he talked about
[47:53] Speaker 1: all Kendrick got to do is cough and y'all.
[47:55] Speaker 2: Give him a Grammy.
[48:00] Speaker 1: Can't say that the dude was wrong.
[48:02] Speaker 2: He has a bit of a point.
[48:04] Speaker 1: Kendrick Lamar has 27 Grammys. What?
[48:08] Speaker 2: What are we talking about?
[48:09] Speaker 1: Like, I don't take the Grammys seriously, personally, right?
[48:13] Speaker 2: Particularly not when it comes to rap, but 27, dog.
[48:16] Speaker 1: 27.
[48:19] Speaker 3: Okay.
[48:21] Speaker 1: Cool.
[48:21] Speaker 5: Right.
[48:22] Speaker 1: Got you. And look, y'all all know I ain't really
[48:25] Speaker 1: out here trying to be out here saying Drake was right.
[48:29] Speaker 1: But on that one, he wasn't wrong. And then Bad Bunny,
[48:32] Speaker 1: who basically gave Ice the middle finger without saying it
[48:35] Speaker 1: up there, it's about to be a very interesting week
[48:39] Speaker 1: for Bad Bunny out here. Had other people come up
[48:43] Speaker 1: with their halftime show yet?
[48:44] Speaker 3: I believe they're keeping it a secret.
[48:49] Speaker 1: A secret, you say?
[48:50] Speaker 3: Yes. Okay.
[48:56] Speaker 1: You know who I actually think was the biggest loser
[48:58] Speaker 1: in all of this?
[48:59] Speaker 2: That dude, Jelly Roll. They hit Jelly Roll.
[49:03] Speaker 1: They tried to get Jelly Roll on the red carpet
[49:05] Speaker 1: to say something about ICE, and Jelly Roll said he
[49:07] Speaker 1: ain't know nothing about no politics. He's like, I'm from
[49:10] Speaker 1: a drug-addicted, you know, dumb redneck from a drug addict home.
[49:15] Speaker 1: We don't know anything about politics. Partner, you don't live
[49:17] Speaker 1: there no more. You don't live there no more. They
[49:20] Speaker 1: asking you about what ICE is doing up there in Minnesota,
[49:23] Speaker 1: which by the way, is also not politics.
[49:26] Speaker 4: Right.
[49:26] Speaker 3: Right.
[49:27] Speaker 2: Like that's a pretty clear yes and no.
[49:29] Speaker 1: And all the talk you got about Jesus and the
[49:31] Speaker 1: Bible and everything else. And in that moment, you ain't
[49:34] Speaker 1: trying to talk about politics. And it's just like, it's
[49:36] Speaker 1: a bummer, man. We all pick and choose. I got
[49:39] Speaker 1: things I don't feel like talking about in front of people, right?
[49:42] Speaker 1: But Jelly Roll's thing is interesting because at once he's
[49:45] Speaker 1: the dude with a bunch of tattoos on his face,
[49:48] Speaker 1: but also that part of the world that supports that,
[49:51] Speaker 1: that's a lot of his money. Didn't Jelly Roll used
[49:55] Speaker 1: to be like on three, six mafia joints?
[49:59] Speaker 2: But his money is over there.
[50:04] Speaker 1: Right? Like, his money is with these people who roll
[50:08] Speaker 1: with that other stuff.
[50:12] Speaker 2: I just thought you was about Jesus, partner.
[50:17] Speaker 3: All right, Bo. Another great day of voicemails. We got
[50:24] Speaker 3: a few good ones. Here's the first.
[50:26] Speaker 4: Hey, hey, what's up, Bo? John from L.A.
[50:28] Speaker 7: This isn't so much an apology as it is an
[50:31] Speaker 7: acknowledgement because I did doubt you, man. I thought you
[50:34] Speaker 7: kind of being hard on the brothers in Dallas with
[50:37] Speaker 7: them being herbs and everything. And recently I had an
[50:40] Speaker 7: opportunity to work with a young man from Houston and
[50:43] Speaker 7: tell him about the show and what you were saying
[50:45] Speaker 7: and talking about the shags.
[50:48] Speaker 4: And he said, yeah, man, it's true.
[50:51] Speaker 5: I said, what?
[50:52] Speaker 7: He said, yeah, man, they wear shags in Dallas.
[50:55] Speaker 3: I said, come on, man.
[50:56] Speaker 4: He said, dude.
[50:57] Speaker 7: They'd be running from the barber. In the middle of
[51:00] Speaker 7: the haircut, they'd just get up and run from the
[51:03] Speaker 7: barber because that's all that can explain the shag.
[51:05] Speaker 3: All right, man.
[51:07] Speaker 4: Yes, you were right.
[51:10] Speaker 1: No, actually, you do owe me an apology because you
[51:13] Speaker 1: were saying that as though you thought I was lying.
[51:17] Speaker 1: I told you they wear shags. And then somebody else
[51:20] Speaker 1: said it, and you were like, oh, okay, now it's true?
[51:23] Speaker 1: Why would I lie to you about the fact that
[51:24] Speaker 1: they was wearing shags? They call it a booty fade,
[51:27] Speaker 1: as if that's any better.
[51:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, them.
[51:31] Speaker 1: Boys wear shags. It's crazy, right? They still do. And
[51:36] Speaker 1: that one boy, he's still the one that played for
[51:37] Speaker 1: the Thunder. I think he finally got rid of his shag,
[51:40] Speaker 1: but he had been gone from Dallas for a long-ass time,
[51:42] Speaker 1: still out there wearing the shag.
[51:43] Speaker 2: I think I told you about this. I got a
[51:44] Speaker 2: partner in Cali. He's a great barber. He's also an actuary,
[51:48] Speaker 2: so I don't think he's really barbering anymore.
[51:50] Speaker 1: But he used to work at a shop in Rialto,
[51:51] Speaker 1: and he said an old hair used to come in
[51:53] Speaker 1: there and ask him for a shag, and he would
[51:54] Speaker 1: refuse to give it to him until he finally told him,
[51:57] Speaker 1: I'll give you this shag, but you can't tell nobody
[51:58] Speaker 1: you've been coming over here getting no shag, man. That's
[52:00] Speaker 1: bad for business. He was like, it was a dope-ass shag, too.
[52:03] Speaker 1: But he was just like, you just can't be in
[52:04] Speaker 1: here telling people that I'm out here giving shags. You
[52:08] Speaker 1: just can't do it.
[52:09] Speaker 3: Bad for business.
[52:10] Speaker 1: Yeah, and the whole city of Dallas is like, get
[52:11] Speaker 1: your shag! Shags!
[52:13] Speaker 4: Shags!
[52:14] Speaker 1: Two-for-one shags!
[52:17] Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
[52:19] Speaker 5: Hey, Beaumonti. This is Matt, Northern Kentucky, right outside of Cincinnati.
[52:27] Speaker 5: So I'm at Ace Hardware today, and for the first
[52:30] Speaker 5: time in my life, I came across a white Xavier.
[52:34] Speaker 5: I had never, ever met a white Xavier before. And
[52:38] Speaker 5: the only thing I know about this man, who is
[52:41] Speaker 5: a Gen Z guy, the only thing I know about
[52:44] Speaker 5: him after this interaction is he is no receiver. I
[52:48] Speaker 5: watched this man fumble my return, my baseball cards, and
[52:51] Speaker 5: my chocolate bar before tripping over the trash can behind
[52:55] Speaker 5: him on the way to put something back on the shelf.
[53:00] Speaker 5: White Xavier needs to find a new position, man.
[53:03] Speaker 3: Big fan of the show. Take it easy.
[53:07] Speaker 1: Okay. First of all, I would like to start with
[53:09] Speaker 1: the fact that my man went to Ace Hardware to
[53:10] Speaker 1: buy some baseball cards.
[53:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[53:14] Speaker 2: Ace Hardware is.
[53:15] Speaker 3: I didn't realize it's the 1920s.
[53:17] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[53:17] Speaker 2: It's slowly approaching the Radio Shack zone.
[53:19] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[53:20] Speaker 1: Wow.
[53:20] Speaker 2: Still in the league, huh?
[53:22] Speaker 1: Boy, I'll tell you this, though. I still have times
[53:24] Speaker 1: where a nice Radio Shack come in handy.
[53:26] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[53:26] Speaker 3: Sometimes you need that cord.
[53:27] Speaker 1: Just need to run in and get a cord. Right.
[53:29] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[53:31] Speaker 1: Number two, what makes the idea that there are no
[53:33] Speaker 1: more white Xaviers interesting is that Xavier is like a
[53:35] Speaker 1: very Catholic name, right? Right. It's saints and stuff like that.
[53:39] Speaker 1: When did they decide to let us have Xavier?
[53:42] Speaker 2: They're like, no, y'all got that.
[53:44] Speaker 1: Cool. No, no, no. We don't even need a partner.
[53:46] Speaker 1: You go ahead and take that. Like, what did it
[53:47] Speaker 1: take for them to give up Xavier? Or did they
[53:50] Speaker 1: just get so frustrated to hear enough say Xavier? They
[53:52] Speaker 1: were like, fuck it, man. It don't even fit no more.
[53:55] Speaker 1: You got it.
[53:56] Speaker 4: All right.
[53:57] Speaker 3: Here's the next one. And similar theme.
[53:59] Speaker 6: Hey, Balmani. Hey, Ryan. I just wanted to call and
[54:02] Speaker 6: add another name to the recent voicemail trend of names
[54:06] Speaker 6: such as the White Reggie or the White Galen. For
[54:10] Speaker 6: your consideration, the White Lamont recently was in Wisconsin, a
[54:16] Speaker 6: rural part of Wisconsin, I should note. And there is
[54:19] Speaker 6: an elected official in that county. An older man looks
[54:23] Speaker 6: like he's in his 70s. White man named Lamont. Do
[54:27] Speaker 6: with this what you will.
[54:30] Speaker 2: Yo, so this is the thing that people don't get, man.
[54:33] Speaker 1: The country whites love a la name. They don't so
[54:38] Speaker 1: much care about the D names and they don't add
[54:41] Speaker 1: apostrophes and they don't necessarily capitalize immediately after the la.
[54:46] Speaker 2: But it's a lot of white ladies named LaDonna, stuff
[54:50] Speaker 2: like that. They do that. But Lamont, another one that
[54:54] Speaker 2: I felt like they let us have.
[54:56] Speaker 1: Now, you know, Italy got that dude Lamont that won
[55:00] Speaker 1: the 100 meters, but he's still black.
[55:02] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? But you remember, I don't know,
[55:03] Speaker 2: there used to be a baseball manager named Gene Lamont.
[55:07] Speaker 1: He was white. So yeah, by the way, speaking of which,
[55:10] Speaker 1: rest in peace to Lamont Sanford. DeMond Wilson died over
[55:13] Speaker 1: the weekend, right? And he was a very black Lamont.
[55:17] Speaker 1: But I feel like this voicemail was in the spirit
[55:20] Speaker 1: of Lamonts of all sorts. What do you think would
[55:23] Speaker 1: happen if he said it was a real white man
[55:25] Speaker 1: that was involved in the city government up there? What
[55:27] Speaker 1: if I went to one of their city council meetings
[55:29] Speaker 1: and I screamed out, you big dummy! You think he'd
[55:31] Speaker 1: get it?
[55:33] Speaker 3: I mean, that show was very, like, 15 million people
[55:36] Speaker 3: used to watch that show.
[55:38] Speaker 1: Yo, the thing about Sanford and Son with Lamont for
[55:41] Speaker 1: me always is, there was nothing cool about Lamont, man.
[55:46] Speaker 2: All we knew was that his dad called him a
[55:48] Speaker 2: dummy all the time.
[55:50] Speaker 1: That's all we knew was his dad called him a
[55:52] Speaker 1: big dummy at every turn. Me and Shannon used to
[55:54] Speaker 1: have the big dummy of the week on the radio show.
[55:56] Speaker 3: That's a good bit.
[55:57] Speaker 1: Oh, it was great every week. We'd have it every week.
[56:00] Speaker 7: All right.
[56:01] Speaker 3: Here's our last one. You know, staying in theme with
[56:03] Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. Hey, what's up, Bo?
[56:05] Speaker 4: What's up, Ryan? This is CB from Brooklyn. I have
[56:09] Speaker 4: to tell the story about learning about little ginger cuz
[56:14] Speaker 4: at my son's school. So my son goes to a
[56:18] Speaker 4: lovely public school here in Bed-Stuy and he was invited
[56:22] Speaker 4: to join the basketball team. And I got to ask
[56:24] Speaker 4: to help coach. So I decided, all right, I'm going
[56:27] Speaker 4: to do this, do this, all that. And I had
[56:31] Speaker 4: seen this young man earlier in the school year, and
[56:34] Speaker 4: it was a little white boy, super-duper ginger. He pulls
[56:37] Speaker 4: up to school, first day of school, with some extra
[56:40] Speaker 4: clean A1s, the Asia Wilson signature shoe. And I was like,
[56:46] Speaker 4: all right, that is a choice that his parents made
[56:49] Speaker 4: because they are not cheap. And they're very distinctive. So
[56:53] Speaker 4: I pull up to basketball practice. Ginger Cud's on the team.
[56:55] Speaker 4: All right, cool. Let me see what's good with Ginger Cud's.
[56:59] Speaker 4: He can hoop a little bit. He's one of the
[57:01] Speaker 4: older kids. This is a third through fifth grade team.
[57:04] Speaker 4: We get to the end of practice, and the coach
[57:08] Speaker 4: asks for player voices. And Ginger Cud's one of the
[57:11] Speaker 4: leaders on the team because he was on the team
[57:13] Speaker 4: last year. And he kicks it to Ginger Cud's, mind you,
[57:17] Speaker 4: I know who his mom is. His mom is on
[57:19] Speaker 4: the PTA. And this isn't spicy white. This is regular,
[57:23] Speaker 4: degular Brooklyn, lives in a nice spot, white. And Ginger
[57:28] Speaker 4: Cuz goes, yeah, you know, y'all did great today. Everybody
[57:34] Speaker 4: gave their maximum effort. You know, everything was real good.
[57:38] Speaker 4: I'm real proud of where this team is going. And
[57:40] Speaker 4: that dialect. And I was like, wow. Little Ginger Cuz.
[57:48] Speaker 4: it is very clear that that young man has been
[57:50] Speaker 4: the only white kid in his class.
[57:53] Speaker 3: For a while.
[57:55] Speaker 4: And I am very excited to see where this season
[57:59] Speaker 4: goes with little ginger cuz as one of our team captains.
[58:05] Speaker 4: Thank you. Have a good one, Bo. Have a good one, Ryan.
[58:09] Speaker 1: Man, the white people that go to, that send their
[58:11] Speaker 1: kids to public schools with the black people, right?
[58:14] Speaker 3: Damn, it gentrified all of Bed-Stuy.
[58:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, special place in heaven for those folks, man. It really,
[58:19] Speaker 1: really is because you really got to do that. And
[58:21] Speaker 1: quite honestly, I don't always know if I recommend that
[58:25] Speaker 1: you do it. But what I would pay to hear
[58:27] Speaker 1: from those people is like, Ryan, you don't have to
[58:31] Speaker 1: verify this if you don't want to, but I think
[58:32] Speaker 1: that you'll agree that one thing that I would find
[58:35] Speaker 1: interesting if I were a white person is when black
[58:38] Speaker 1: people who spend a lot of time around white people
[58:41] Speaker 1: tell you what the things are that white people do
[58:43] Speaker 1: that are funny. that it's like, huh, you know, hadn't
[58:46] Speaker 1: really thought of that. You know, it's just kind of
[58:47] Speaker 1: an average thing. Like, Black comedians give you all kinds
[58:51] Speaker 1: of access and insights into such things, right? We don't
[58:55] Speaker 1: talk nearly enough about the things that white people who
[58:59] Speaker 1: spend all their time around Black people have the good
[59:02] Speaker 1: fortune of noticing and thereby sharing. I would love to
[59:05] Speaker 1: get to Jijica's when he's like 19 and he'll be like, yo,
[59:08] Speaker 1: so here's this thing about black people. And they'd be like,
[59:10] Speaker 1: what you mean? And then he starts talking and be like, yeah,
[59:13] Speaker 1: he's got a point.
[59:15] Speaker 3: I'll plead the fifth there.
[59:17] Speaker 1: Hey, look, man, humans are humans.
[59:18] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? We've all got things.
[59:21] Speaker 1: You guys know we got some things. It's okay. But
[59:24] Speaker 1: also you're playing this the right way. Ladies and gentlemen,
[59:28] Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us here on The Right Time.
[59:30] Speaker 1: We do this four times a week. Ryan Bellamy handles
[59:33] Speaker 1: everything behind the scenes. Thank you, sir. Hit the voicemail line, 323-596-7767.
[59:39] Speaker 1: By the way, tomorrow we begin our series on... No,
[59:43] Speaker 1: tomorrow we don't. Tomorrow's just a different Time Machine Tuesday.
[59:46] Speaker 1: My fault. The week after we begin our series on
[59:48] Speaker 1: the year 1996 in a wrap. That's going to be
[59:50] Speaker 1: a six-week series, by the way, so look out for that. Remember,
[59:54] Speaker 1: follow the right time. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
[59:57] Speaker 1: give us five stars, and do those things, please. Help
[1:00:00] Speaker 1: us out. You only give us four stars. I'm inclined
[1:00:02] Speaker 1: to believe that you're not a person who's trying to help,
[1:00:05] Speaker 1: you hater. Take it easy.
