[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. And this is that time of week where
[0:24] Speaker 1: we have a hater join us, coming to us live
[0:26] Speaker 1: from D.C. Check him out on the Ranger tailgate. And
[0:30] Speaker 1: please note he has a framed jersey behind him with
[0:33] Speaker 1: his last name, not because he liked the player, just because.
[0:37] Speaker 2: It says Anderson on it. Joel Anderson, what's going on?
[0:40] Speaker 3: What kind of introduction is that?
[0:43] Speaker 4: What do you want this podcast episode to be? What
[0:47] Speaker 4: do you mean? What do you want it to be?
[0:49] Speaker 1: Look, I have identified you.
[0:52] Speaker 4: In the way that.
[0:54] Speaker 1: I've identified you the way the audience knows you and
[1:00] Speaker 1: recognizes you. So once I say that, they're like, oh,
[1:03] Speaker 1: it's going to be Joel.
[1:04] Speaker 4: No, no, no. People know me for, I would hope,
[1:07] Speaker 4: some of my other work, you know, about Clarence Thomas,
[1:10] Speaker 4: Slow Burn 8, Slow Burn 6, the L.A. Riots, the
[1:14] Speaker 4: piece I wrote on Michael Sam.
[1:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, we told them about that.
[1:17] Speaker 1: We told them about that when you was the fastest
[1:19] Speaker 1: 10-year-old in America.
[1:20] Speaker 4: See, I mean, you know, I mean, look, I just
[1:23] Speaker 4: want everybody that watches this show to see what is
[1:27] Speaker 4: going on here.
[1:28] Speaker 3: I'm not even.
[1:28] Speaker 4: What? I gave you.
[1:29] Speaker 1: Hold on.
[1:30] Speaker 4: I have not said anything negative about both. Hold on,
[1:31] Speaker 4: hold on, hold on.
[1:32] Speaker 1: I got attacked.
[1:32] Speaker 4: Hold on, hold on.
[1:34] Speaker 1: I got to tell you, I want to be clear.
[1:36] Speaker 1: You seem to be taking the 10 year old thing personally,
[1:39] Speaker 1: as if the only, the only reason I know this
[1:41] Speaker 1: is not because you told us about it repeated.
[1:44] Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I just kind of felt like you
[1:45] Speaker 4: just leaped over. You left over a lot of other things.
[1:47] Speaker 4: I was going through a list of some of my,
[1:49] Speaker 4: you know, I was, in fact, I was going to
[1:51] Speaker 4: bring up my LinkedIn and go through all my honors
[1:54] Speaker 4: and achievements. And I was going to read them off here.
[1:56] Speaker 4: So people know that there's more to me than running
[1:58] Speaker 4: fast when I was 10 years old. And, allegedly being
[2:02] Speaker 4: a hater and i don't think i'm a hater at
[2:03] Speaker 4: all and i don't think.
[2:04] Speaker 1: People really think that division.
[2:07] Speaker 4: One really believe that i'm.
[2:08] Speaker 2: A hater division one college athlete.
[2:11] Speaker 3: There you go thank you i appreciate that man thanks.
[2:14] Speaker 1: Because if you start rattling off your achievements that's gonna
[2:16] Speaker 1: give me some professional ptsd that i don't necessarily need.
[2:21] Speaker 3: What what professional ptsd.
[2:25] Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
[2:25] Speaker 1: Listen to me now, believe me later on.
[2:27] Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
[2:29] Speaker 3: I got you.
[2:30] Speaker 1: I got you. Anyway, I mentioned you on the Ranger
[2:33] Speaker 1: tailgate with Van Lathan and Tay Frazier, both of whom,
[2:37] Speaker 1: I mean, I guess TCU has a football team this year.
[2:40] Speaker 1: We just don't ever talk about it, but that's better
[2:42] Speaker 1: than they football teams. They got LSU and North Carolina,
[2:44] Speaker 1: and you would much rather have a football team that
[2:46] Speaker 1: don't nobody really talk about than be like them.
[2:49] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, that's a hell of a windup.
[2:51] Speaker 4: Of those teams, Of those three programs, mine is the
[2:54] Speaker 4: only one that has recently played in a national championship game.
[2:57] Speaker 3: But fair enough.
[2:57] Speaker 1: This is true. And the only one to lose by
[3:00] Speaker 1: 50-something points.
[3:02] Speaker 3: You got to be in it to win it, though.
[3:03] Speaker 2: That's very true.
[3:04] Speaker 3: You got to be in it to win it.
[3:04] Speaker 2: You're not wrong.
[3:05] Speaker 3: You got to be in it. You're not wrong.
[3:07] Speaker 4: And I mean, they are going, it is very weird
[3:09] Speaker 4: how they're going through like really miserable football years at
[3:13] Speaker 4: the same time we all got thrown together. Because I mean,
[3:17] Speaker 4: I thought North, I didn't think North Carolina would be good.
[3:21] Speaker 4: But I didn't think they would be as bad as
[3:22] Speaker 4: they were. Although I will say they do seem to
[3:24] Speaker 4: be better the last couple of weeks. The last couple
[3:26] Speaker 4: of games.
[3:26] Speaker 3: Are doing better.
[3:27] Speaker 4: And the LSU thing, man, like. What can we I mean. I,
[3:35] Speaker 4: I think that all of them are being ridiculous.
[3:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, because you believe that Penn State should not have
[3:41] Speaker 1: fired Franklin and you believe that LSU should not have
[3:43] Speaker 1: fired Brian Kelly.
[3:44] Speaker 4: I think that the odds are that at some point
[3:47] Speaker 4: in the next five to 10 years, that one of
[3:49] Speaker 4: those guys would figure it out.
[3:50] Speaker 3: If not both of them, that they would get eventually right.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Fast.
[3:53] Speaker 2: How do you define, figure it out?
[3:55] Speaker 3: Well, they would go in a championship, national championship, a
[3:58] Speaker 3: national championship.
[3:58] Speaker 4: Yeah. I think that one of them would just cause
[4:00] Speaker 4: you know, some years things don't break your way. You
[4:03] Speaker 4: have fumbles or whatever, but then one year, you know,
[4:06] Speaker 4: Ohio state's replacing a quarterback or they lose a bunch
[4:09] Speaker 4: of guys to injury or Ryan day decides he wants to,
[4:12] Speaker 4: Be the coach of the New York Giants. Things like
[4:14] Speaker 4: that happen. And eventually, they would be in position to
[4:17] Speaker 4: seize on that. Because, I mean, I just, I wonder
[4:20] Speaker 4: if Brian Kelly had another, because LSU should be used
[4:25] Speaker 4: to eight and four. That's the thing. I dig that.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Acting like they're too good to go eight and four.
[4:29] Speaker 4: Oh. They acting like they're too good to go eight
[4:32] Speaker 4: and four. And that is really the story of their program,
[4:35] Speaker 4: but for the exceptional few seasons, right?
[4:37] Speaker 5: Right.
[4:38] Speaker 2: That is correct.
[4:39] Speaker 1: But let me ask you a question on that front, right?
[4:42] Speaker 1: Because I agree with you on that, that they are,
[4:45] Speaker 1: LSU is plus or minus nine, maybe nine and a half.
[4:48] Speaker 1: Like that's where the line pretty much gets set in
[4:50] Speaker 1: most years, right? But if you settle for plus or
[4:54] Speaker 1: minus nine, will you not always be plus or minus nine?
[4:58] Speaker 1: I feel like at some point you have to show
[4:59] Speaker 1: a little proof of concept. Like I think the problem
[5:01] Speaker 1: for Franklin and why I thought, okay, you guys had
[5:03] Speaker 1: to do this. It wasn't about the wins and losses.
[5:05] Speaker 1: It's which wins and which losses. And at some point
[5:09] Speaker 1: you got to win the ones that matter. So it
[5:11] Speaker 1: was very interesting. Mack Brown survived losing five years in
[5:14] Speaker 1: a row to Oklahoma when he was at Texas. In
[5:16] Speaker 1: an embarrassing fashion.
[5:18] Speaker 5: Right.
[5:18] Speaker 1: But he was kicking A & M' s teeth in along
[5:21] Speaker 1: the way. And look, he was one terrible pass interference
[5:25] Speaker 1: call in 2004 away. From losing that job. The Kansas
[5:29] Speaker 1: call where Mark Mangino was like, the fix is in.
[5:31] Speaker 1: And I was like, I understand why you feel that way, brother.
[5:37] Speaker 1: It looks that way. But I guess for schools on
[5:41] Speaker 1: that level, look, LSU has won three national championships in
[5:43] Speaker 1: the last 25 years. Right. I get maybe why they
[5:47] Speaker 1: feel that way, but at the same time with you,
[5:49] Speaker 1: I feel where you're like, okay, these results are not
[5:52] Speaker 1: terribly out of line, but do you not add something
[5:55] Speaker 1: to the fact that don't nobody like that man?
[5:57] Speaker 4: Oh, that is the whole ball game with Brian Kelly.
[6:03] Speaker 4: I knew that he wasn't liked. Did you know that
[6:06] Speaker 4: he was the most reviled man in college football? Because
[6:09] Speaker 4: that is certainly what it seems to be. It has
[6:11] Speaker 4: been very hard to even find former players to say, hey, thanks,
[6:15] Speaker 4: Brian Kelly, for believing in me.
[6:17] Speaker 1: Hey, man. I called a former player when he took
[6:21] Speaker 1: the LSU job because, again, I was struck that he
[6:24] Speaker 1: did not bring a single assistant with him. And a
[6:27] Speaker 1: bunch of them stayed with that wavy-headed boy at Notre Dame, right?
[6:32] Speaker 4: Which seems like a very dangerous prospect, by the way.
[6:35] Speaker 1: That was a risky play.
[6:36] Speaker 4: Let me say with the brother here at Notre Dame,
[6:38] Speaker 4: or let me go to Brian Kelly winning coach going
[6:40] Speaker 4: to LSU.
[6:41] Speaker 1: Hall of Fame level coach, right? Now, look, I don't
[6:43] Speaker 1: know if Brian Kelly asked any of them to come, whatever,
[6:46] Speaker 1: but I asked a former player of his, I was like,
[6:49] Speaker 1: so is there anything that we're getting wrong here about
[6:51] Speaker 1: Brian Kelly? And he said, just no. Like he wasn't
[6:56] Speaker 1: mad about it. He didn't express any disdain. Like he
[6:59] Speaker 1: seems to just not have relationships at all.
[7:01] Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I was reading the top of a
[7:05] Speaker 4: story from ESPN like a few years ago where it
[7:08] Speaker 4: talked about some assistants that had worked with him at
[7:09] Speaker 4: Central Michigan. And they thought they were getting invited to
[7:12] Speaker 4: a party at his house. And it turned out he
[7:14] Speaker 4: had them doing work. You remember, it's kind of like
[7:16] Speaker 4: the Hakeem situation when he was in the McDonald's house.
[7:18] Speaker 1: You thought you got invited, now you got to park cars.
[7:20] Speaker 4: Yeah, right, yeah.
[7:21] Speaker 3: Gave him a little coat.
[7:23] Speaker 4: And they were just like, and I learned through that
[7:25] Speaker 4: experience that if I ever got in that position, I
[7:26] Speaker 4: would never treat somebody that way. And I was like,
[7:30] Speaker 4: this is a quote, too, in a story.
[7:32] Speaker 1: I believe there was a name attached to it.
[7:35] Speaker 3: There was a.
[7:35] Speaker 4: Name attached to it. It's like, yo, people do not
[7:38] Speaker 4: have any problem going off on that dude. And yeah,
[7:41] Speaker 4: I mean, he clearly.
[7:42] Speaker 5: The two people involved you're referencing are Matt LaFleur and
[7:46] Speaker 5: Robert Sala.
[7:47] Speaker 3: And they were on the record.
[7:48] Speaker 4: Robert Sala.
[7:50] Speaker 1: Ryan rarely jumps in on the two bad episodes. It
[7:54] Speaker 1: had to jump in because LSU fan has run through
[7:59] Speaker 1: all of these.
[8:00] Speaker 4: This is why his ass ain't here no more.
[8:03] Speaker 1: Like Brian Kelly is like eight different levels of the
[8:06] Speaker 1: draft day movie, but nobody came to his birthday party.
[8:10] Speaker 4: Right. Like it's, it's all.
[8:11] Speaker 1: And look, it is. He's not the only thing about this.
[8:15] Speaker 1: As much as you think Nick Saban is a jerk.
[8:18] Speaker 2: People don't talk about Nick Saban like this.
[8:20] Speaker 3: No.
[8:21] Speaker 1: Not even close.
[8:22] Speaker 4: I mean, so there's two things with Nick Saban. And
[8:24] Speaker 4: I always kind of feel like people are scared of
[8:26] Speaker 4: him for whatever reason.
[8:27] Speaker 3: Like, they call him Daddy.
[8:29] Speaker 1: Yes, that's wild.
[8:30] Speaker 4: Homeboy had to diss his homeboy, Steve Sarkeesian. He's like, hey, man,
[8:36] Speaker 4: Daddy's going to be on me if I don't do it.
[8:38] Speaker 3: Was that Pete Golding?
[8:39] Speaker 1: I think it was Pete Golding. It was, but hey, hey, brother.
[8:41] Speaker 1: I don't care what the circumstances or situations are. Could not...
[8:47] Speaker 1: be me. We're going to have to come up with
[8:50] Speaker 1: a different name.
[8:51] Speaker 3: Oh, you're not going to call another man daddy?
[8:53] Speaker 1: We got to draw the line somewhere, baby.
[8:55] Speaker 2: We got to draw the line. We got to draw
[8:57] Speaker 2: the line somewhere.
[8:59] Speaker 1: If somebody getting called daddy and is not your actual daddy,
[9:03] Speaker 1: that is a title that one must earn and one
[9:06] Speaker 1: that Nick Saban cannot.
[9:08] Speaker 2: At least not for me.
[9:10] Speaker 4: I mean, someday Nick Saban has to come into my
[9:13] Speaker 4: house and meet my family and I'm referring to you
[9:16] Speaker 4: as daddy. You know what I'm saying?
[9:17] Speaker 3: In front of my wife and kids.
[9:18] Speaker 1: I just, I just, I don't know.
[9:20] Speaker 3: Maybe that's toxic masculinity or whatever, but.
[9:22] Speaker 1: I imagine, imagine the way your woman is going to
[9:26] Speaker 1: look at you when you call this man daddy.
[9:29] Speaker 4: Yes. Yes. I mean, bro, I just, so, so, but
[9:33] Speaker 4: obviously something is special with him, but also he's excellent.
[9:37] Speaker 4: Like his, the, the, the, you know, it's also, you know,
[9:42] Speaker 4: So we saw Brian Kelly dancing with recruits, right? And
[9:45] Speaker 4: it looked goofy as hell.
[9:46] Speaker 3: Right.
[9:46] Speaker 4: We've seen Nick Saban do the Cupid Shuffle, and he
[9:49] Speaker 4: looked like he was on beat, on time with all
[9:51] Speaker 4: of it.
[9:52] Speaker 3: Yes.
[9:52] Speaker 4: So obviously, he's also just got a little swag. He
[9:55] Speaker 4: carries himself different. Brian Kelly ain't got none of that, man.
[9:58] Speaker 2: No.
[9:59] Speaker 1: And at a place where they like their coaches to
[10:01] Speaker 1: be fun in some form or fashion like Louisiana is
[10:05] Speaker 1: not a boring place like it's just you got to
[10:08] Speaker 1: provide some measure of entertainment but let me tell you
[10:10] Speaker 1: our last show we talked about the fact that it
[10:12] Speaker 1: doesn't feel like any jobs are good anymore no right
[10:15] Speaker 1: like there's no the pressure at every job is now
[10:20] Speaker 1: professional caliber pressure. And you're looking at a three, four,
[10:24] Speaker 1: five year sort of schedule.
[10:26] Speaker 2: Because again, we've talked about this before.
[10:27] Speaker 1: It is entirely possible that Auburn is going to come
[10:30] Speaker 1: open as a job. Like that one is still on
[10:32] Speaker 1: the board as one that could come out there. Florida State,
[10:35] Speaker 1: I don't think any of us think it's possible that
[10:36] Speaker 1: they don't make a move. I think North Carolina has
[10:38] Speaker 1: no choice but to make a move. How much money
[10:43] Speaker 1: would you have to pay to get somebody to sign
[10:45] Speaker 1: up for whatever the fuck it is that they over
[10:47] Speaker 1: there doing? Virginia Tech, we forget Virginia Tech is still
[10:50] Speaker 1: on the board. That job came open. There was another
[10:53] Speaker 1: job that came open that same week. UCLA, still out there.
[10:59] Speaker 1: I think Arkansas is going to do the hilarious thing.
[11:02] Speaker 4: With that job.
[11:03] Speaker 5: I mean.
[11:04] Speaker 3: I actually kind of can't blame him.
[11:05] Speaker 4: No, because who else are you going to get?
[11:07] Speaker 1: And who else are you going to get?
[11:08] Speaker 4: Yeah, and he wants to be there. He's not a
[11:10] Speaker 4: bad coach. No.
[11:12] Speaker 3: He didn't get fired because he was bad.
[11:13] Speaker 1: No, he was the best coach they've had since Frank Broyles.
[11:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, man. Yeah. So it's just like I kind of
[11:20] Speaker 4: can see why they might just want to be. We
[11:22] Speaker 4: can sit this out. We got somebody that already knows
[11:25] Speaker 4: how we like things here.
[11:26] Speaker 1: And we ain't got to pay him that much because
[11:27] Speaker 1: there is no competition to hire him.
[11:29] Speaker 4: Uh-uh that's right it's just it's just you we know
[11:32] Speaker 4: we know what the market is for you right now
[11:33] Speaker 4: bro think.
[11:34] Speaker 1: About this he has people who go with him to
[11:36] Speaker 1: different jobs and brian kelly doesn't yeah man bobby petrino
[11:39] Speaker 1: is who we're talking about for those of you who
[11:41] Speaker 1: don't know there are people who are loyal to bobby
[11:44] Speaker 1: petrino and nobody's loyal.
[11:46] Speaker 4: To brian i have played for guys that people hated
[11:50] Speaker 4: you know what i mean like just no and i've
[11:51] Speaker 4: just never seen people talk about a person in the
[11:54] Speaker 4: way that Brian Kelly has been talked about. But I wonder,
[11:57] Speaker 4: I mean, the thing is he's still a good football coach.
[12:00] Speaker 4: I think he'll get one of these jobs.
[12:02] Speaker 3: I think it's possible.
[12:03] Speaker 1: Is it a job that he's willing to take? Cause
[12:05] Speaker 1: he's 64 years old.
[12:06] Speaker 4: Well, that's a good thing. So like, listen, what if,
[12:08] Speaker 4: what if I give you one of these two jobs,
[12:10] Speaker 4: Michigan state or Wisconsin, if one of those come up
[12:12] Speaker 4: and they hired him, that's not a bad hire for them.
[12:14] Speaker 1: Is it? I, it's not a bad hire for them.
[12:17] Speaker 1: I don't, so I don't think it's a great hire
[12:19] Speaker 1: for Wisconsin because I don't think you can run the
[12:21] Speaker 1: kind of offense Brian Kelly wants to run. and be
[12:24] Speaker 1: successful at Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin, we're just going to
[12:27] Speaker 1: line up and mash you out.
[12:29] Speaker 2: That's what they do. Michigan State, maybe.
[12:32] Speaker 1: The thing is, he has grown accustomed to a lifestyle,
[12:40] Speaker 1: shall we say, as it relates to coaching.
[12:42] Speaker 2: I'm not talking about the money, just the places he's been.
[12:45] Speaker 1: Golfing. I think it's a giant step down from what
[12:49] Speaker 1: is possible at Notre Dame and at LSU to Michigan
[12:54] Speaker 1: State and Wisconsin. I think that Michigan State in particular,
[12:58] Speaker 1: I think that is a huge drop from what like
[13:01] Speaker 1: getting used to a job where, look, they mad at
[13:03] Speaker 1: you for eight and four at LSU. They'll be fairly
[13:06] Speaker 1: happy with you for nine and three at Michigan State.
[13:09] Speaker 2: And I don't think he wants to live that life again.
[13:12] Speaker 4: I hear. See, to me, that sounds like a good
[13:14] Speaker 4: job because that's when you were talking about this. I
[13:16] Speaker 4: was like, you said there's no good. Are there any
[13:17] Speaker 4: good jobs? You know what sounds like a good job?
[13:20] Speaker 3: Ole Miss.
[13:21] Speaker 1: But I don't think Ole Miss is a good job anymore.
[13:23] Speaker 1: I think Lane is blowing the box.
[13:24] Speaker 3: You think he's blowing it up now?
[13:25] Speaker 1: I mean, they've been going to Sugar Bowls, right? Like,
[13:28] Speaker 1: they've been going to these levels of games. They are
[13:30] Speaker 1: probably going to finish in the top 10 this year.
[13:34] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[13:35] Speaker 1: I don't. I think that used to be. So we
[13:38] Speaker 1: talked about this. I don't think even Kentucky is what
[13:41] Speaker 1: Kentucky used to be, where if you can go seven,
[13:44] Speaker 1: eight wins every year and just don't embarrass them, you'll
[13:48] Speaker 1: make your money and everything will be okay. I don't
[13:51] Speaker 1: think it's like that anymore. I'm curious if you still
[13:54] Speaker 1: think that that's something that people will be able to
[13:55] Speaker 1: pull off in the Big Ten and the SEC.
[13:59] Speaker 2: You might be able to pull it off. I put
[14:00] Speaker 2: it like this. you can't go back to nine wins
[14:03] Speaker 2: a year at Clemson anymore. For example, you know what
[14:05] Speaker 2: I mean?
[14:06] Speaker 4: I think so. The thing is, is will fans ever
[14:09] Speaker 4: catch up with the reality of modern college football, right? Like,
[14:12] Speaker 4: will they be able to say, you know what? This
[14:14] Speaker 4: is a lot more like the NFL. They're playing a
[14:16] Speaker 4: lot more competitive conference games. You can loop, you can
[14:19] Speaker 4: take a couple of losses and shoot man. Rosters aren't
[14:22] Speaker 4: as deep as they used to be. So if you
[14:24] Speaker 4: get a few injuries, it can really take you out
[14:27] Speaker 4: of the running.
[14:28] Speaker 1: Right.
[14:28] Speaker 3: So I, If fans.
[14:30] Speaker 4: Can kind of come to that understanding, would it be like, man,
[14:33] Speaker 4: just because the Chiefs lost, it doesn't mean they're sorry, right?
[14:37] Speaker 4: Or one year the Bengals don't make the playoffs and
[14:39] Speaker 4: people are like, oh, that's horrible. People have sort of
[14:42] Speaker 4: an understanding that things are going to happen on a
[14:44] Speaker 4: year-to-year basis. But as long as you're consistently good and
[14:47] Speaker 4: consistently contending, people will understand.
[14:50] Speaker 1: But what do you call contending consistently?
[14:54] Speaker 4: Just being able to make the playoffs and have an
[14:56] Speaker 4: outside shot at the championship.
[14:58] Speaker 2: Okay.
[14:58] Speaker 1: So you're saying, and I'm assuming that when you say
[15:00] Speaker 1: that you mean for like a certain echelon of program, right?
[15:04] Speaker 4: Like, so that's the L that's the LSU should be
[15:07] Speaker 4: able to accept eight and four every night.
[15:09] Speaker 3: Again, is what I'm saying.
[15:10] Speaker 2: Every now and again.
[15:12] Speaker 1: Yes. Um, how often, how often should they win 11?
[15:17] Speaker 1: Cause Brian Kelly won 10 twice in.
[15:19] Speaker 3: A 10 year span for four, 11.
[15:22] Speaker 1: 4 out of 10 at 11?
[15:25] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[15:26] Speaker 1: I feel like you have undercut your argument because that
[15:29] Speaker 1: feels like a lot of 11s.
[15:31] Speaker 4: I mean, man, because you're going to get weak schedules sometimes.
[15:34] Speaker 4: So that would be 11 and 1. Maybe I should
[15:35] Speaker 4: say 10.
[15:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, keep in mind they got to play Alabama every year.
[15:37] Speaker 3: That's right. They got to play Alabama every year.
[15:39] Speaker 4: And Texas A & M every year.
[15:41] Speaker 3: Tough, yeah. So, yeah.
[15:43] Speaker 4: Okay, maybe I'll go back to 10. Maybe I'll go
[15:46] Speaker 4: 10 wins every 3 to 4.
[15:47] Speaker 1: And by the way, the 10 will be a 10
[15:49] Speaker 1: and 2. I think we need to specify.
[15:52] Speaker 3: Ten and two.
[15:53] Speaker 4: So you got to accept that you're going to lose
[15:54] Speaker 4: a couple games, right? But you know what, Bo? The
[15:57] Speaker 4: way I was going to say it, the piece that
[15:59] Speaker 4: has blown all this up and makes people unreasonable.
[16:02] Speaker 3: Kurt Cignetti and Clark Lee.
[16:03] Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
[16:04] Speaker 5: Yes, it is.
[16:04] Speaker 3: Look, Kurt Cignetti.
[16:05] Speaker 2: I think Kurt Cignetti even more than Clark Lee.
[16:07] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[16:08] Speaker 4: Man, dog. Kentucky's looking at Indiana and they're like, what?
[16:11] Speaker 3: They're right there.
[16:11] Speaker 4: What are you?
[16:14] Speaker 3: How they doing this?
[16:17] Speaker 1: With the James Madison All-Star. Yeah, bro. I know I've
[16:19] Speaker 1: talked about this many times on this show, but it's
[16:22] Speaker 1: a bunch of guys he brought. Like when Deion went
[16:24] Speaker 1: to Colorado and said he was bringing his luggage and
[16:26] Speaker 1: it was Louie. Dog, he rolled up with duffel bags.
[16:29] Speaker 4: Dog, he just.
[16:30] Speaker 2: Still flossy.
[16:31] Speaker 3: I mean, and they look great.
[16:34] Speaker 4: They look great.
[16:35] Speaker 3: I don't know what happened.
[16:37] Speaker 4: They put Indiana uniforms on, and all of a sudden
[16:40] Speaker 4: they became Oregon, you know? And so I'm sure Kentucky
[16:45] Speaker 4: is like, they don't even have boys in that state.
[16:47] Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? They don't even got, where
[16:48] Speaker 4: are they getting these people from, you know? And so
[16:50] Speaker 4: I'm sure that they're looking at that, and probably to
[16:52] Speaker 4: a less extent, T.J., like Clark Lee in Vanderbilt, and
[16:55] Speaker 4: Vanderbilt's bullying LSU.
[16:57] Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
[16:58] Speaker 1: Well, hold on.
[16:58] Speaker 2: Think about this.
[17:00] Speaker 1: James Franklin won some games at Vanderbilt. Like, I want
[17:04] Speaker 1: to say he got some wins over Georgia, but it
[17:05] Speaker 1: was like, I mean, I guess this is down as LSU,
[17:07] Speaker 1: but it was like kind of down Georgia. But James
[17:10] Speaker 1: Franklin parlayed that into this Penn State job with a
[17:13] Speaker 1: couple of seasons in the top 25. And by the way, deserved.
[17:18] Speaker 2: Well done.
[17:18] Speaker 3: Vanderbilt so hard.
[17:19] Speaker 1: Yeah. Clark Lee could not have done this without what
[17:22] Speaker 1: Franklin had done prior to kind of legitimize the place. Absolutely.
[17:26] Speaker 1: But I'm saying, if what James Franklin did at Vanderbilt
[17:30] Speaker 1: could get you Penn State, what exactly can Clark Lee
[17:34] Speaker 1: get out of doing this at Vanderbilt? Because I don't
[17:36] Speaker 1: hear his name being talked about as a guy to
[17:40] Speaker 1: go to LSU.
[17:41] Speaker 4: Right. I mean, because he's home. Vanderbilt is home for him. So, yeah,
[17:49] Speaker 4: I know. I know because Jonathan Smith. See, I bet
[17:51] Speaker 4: Jonathan Smith. This is what these guys need to be
[17:53] Speaker 4: thinking about. Jonathan Smith, they loved him in Oregon State, man. Yes.
[17:56] Speaker 1: But to be fair, they ain't got a conference. Oregon
[18:00] Speaker 1: State became a completely different job.
[18:02] Speaker 4: Yeah, right. And when he left, that's right. He had
[18:04] Speaker 4: to go somewhere. But I wonder if they just don't
[18:07] Speaker 4: think they can dislodge Clark. I mean, the thing is,
[18:09] Speaker 4: if that's the guy you want, you have to make
[18:13] Speaker 4: him say no. Because, I mean, the reality of Vanderbilt
[18:16] Speaker 4: is that he's not.
[18:18] Speaker 3: Going to be able to do this year over year
[18:20] Speaker 3: over year.
[18:21] Speaker 4: Right? Well, hold on.
[18:25] Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question on that. Clearly, Indiana
[18:28] Speaker 1: thinks that you can do it year over year there
[18:29] Speaker 1: because they're paying that coach like you can.
[18:31] Speaker 2: Right. Right. And I'll be honest with you.
[18:33] Speaker 1: I thought that this new world order would lead to
[18:36] Speaker 1: Indiana just being a feeder for other programs. Right. Like
[18:40] Speaker 1: Michael Pennix going to Washington after having been at Indiana.
[18:43] Speaker 2: I thought that that's what it was going to be.
[18:44] Speaker 1: I guess it never dawned on me that they could
[18:46] Speaker 1: ever be a 10-11 win program.
[18:48] Speaker 2: But they look like they're going to be buyers.
[18:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
[18:51] Speaker 3: I mean, I've never been to Bloomington. Have you been
[18:53] Speaker 3: to Bloomington before?
[18:55] Speaker 4: I've heard it's nice.
[18:57] Speaker 3: They were good at basketball once.
[19:01] Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, man. There ain't that many
[19:04] Speaker 1: states that truly worry me.
[19:07] Speaker 2: Man.
[19:08] Speaker 1: I don't know if you've done any driving through Indiana.
[19:11] Speaker 2: The Indiana that ain't got no dots.
[19:13] Speaker 4: Oh, well, yeah.
[19:14] Speaker 2: Did not like it.
[19:15] Speaker 3: Are you talking about Hammond?
[19:18] Speaker 2: No, that's Illinois. Not as Indiana. You're right.
[19:20] Speaker 3: No, no.
[19:20] Speaker 1: I'm talking about Southern Indiana. I have been to Hammond.
[19:24] Speaker 1: And I will say about Hammond, the project got white
[19:26] Speaker 1: people in it. And that is, you're right. But yeah, Hammond, Indiana,
[19:31] Speaker 1: which is close to Chicago. That's why I said Illinois.
[19:33] Speaker 1: But I'm talking about down south.
[19:35] Speaker 3: Yeah, that Bloomington stuff.
[19:37] Speaker 2: I don't know where exactly it is. I'm just telling you.
[19:39] Speaker 1: I done done a lot of driving, man. I've done
[19:41] Speaker 1: the east of Kentucky. I've done all the deep south.
[19:43] Speaker 1: I've done all the west. I've done all I-10. I've
[19:46] Speaker 1: done all I-40. Indiana felt a little different.
[19:49] Speaker 3: Really, man?
[19:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt a little different.
[19:51] Speaker 3: I could see that.
[19:52] Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember what state felt like that for me.
[19:54] Speaker 4: Maybe the south Georgia actually kind of felt like that
[19:57] Speaker 4: to me a little bit.
[19:58] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. South Georgia's a little worrisome. But yeah, I've
[20:02] Speaker 1: done all the way across Kentucky from like Louisville going
[20:05] Speaker 1: back to North Carolina. So it's Kentucky with a little
[20:07] Speaker 1: dovey ain't.
[20:08] Speaker 2: Throwing in there.
[20:09] Speaker 3: Okay. Yeah, that's all right.
[20:12] Speaker 1: I do remember I went to get some gas in
[20:14] Speaker 1: eastern Kentucky, and that was the most transactional encounter I've
[20:17] Speaker 1: ever had in the south.
[20:18] Speaker 4: Really?
[20:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt like going to the bodega up north. Boom, boom, go.
[20:23] Speaker 4: Get out of here?
[20:25] Speaker 2: He ain't have nothing to say to me. I ain't
[20:27] Speaker 2: have nothing to say to him.
[20:28] Speaker 3: Man, that's crazy.
[20:31] Speaker 4: It's funny about those areas because- Florida low-key got a
[20:34] Speaker 4: lot of those spots. Like just even within the Tampa
[20:37] Speaker 4: Bay area, they used to, oh man, I'll never forget.
[20:40] Speaker 4: I used to have to work Sundays in Pasco County.
[20:44] Speaker 4: Pasco County has, I'm trying to think what the Lake,
[20:47] Speaker 4: Lando Lakes would be one of the cities there. So
[20:50] Speaker 4: I don't know if that, or Dade City, Dade City
[20:52] Speaker 4: is a place.
[20:52] Speaker 3: It's a Pasco.
[20:54] Speaker 2: That's where Pennix is from, right?
[20:55] Speaker 1: Pennix is from, right.
[20:56] Speaker 4: So there's one side of the county that is very
[21:00] Speaker 4: rural and another part that's very suburban and kind of
[21:03] Speaker 4: close to the water.
[21:04] Speaker 3: So one day I get a call. They say, oh, man,
[21:06] Speaker 3: there's been a.
[21:07] Speaker 4: Shooting over on Teak Street in Newport Ritchie.
[21:12] Speaker 3: And so I look this, you know, I'm looking it
[21:14] Speaker 3: up to see. And I see.
[21:16] Speaker 4: In the archives, Teak Street Nazi Compound. I told the editor,
[21:24] Speaker 4: I was like, bro, I'm sorry. It was the only
[21:27] Speaker 4: time I've ever been like, nah, I'm not doing it.
[21:30] Speaker 4: Because they had killed, the reason it was famous, because
[21:32] Speaker 4: they had killed a black dude who was over there
[21:34] Speaker 4: to see some girl that he was trying to visit.
[21:37] Speaker 3: And I was like, bro, I just... I can't do it, man.
[21:39] Speaker 4: So there's some spots even within, like, Tampa that are
[21:42] Speaker 4: kind of like, I don't want to be over there, man.
[21:44] Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing about playing college football that the
[21:47] Speaker 1: young boys don't necessarily know to inquire about is, like,
[21:51] Speaker 1: know your surroundings because you could be signing up for, like,
[21:55] Speaker 1: campus is super dope wherever campus may be, but it's
[21:59] Speaker 1: a few. Like, Penn State is one of those where
[22:00] Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, I don't think I would do that.
[22:04] Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, we say pencil tucking.
[22:06] Speaker 1: Pencil tucking. I don't think I would do that. They
[22:11] Speaker 1: clearly get players, and they spent the money, and they
[22:13] Speaker 1: got the dudes there, and Philly guys still want to
[22:16] Speaker 1: go there, and that still produces a decent number of people,
[22:19] Speaker 1: and you can get New Jersey guys and all of that.
[22:21] Speaker 1: But that feels a lot like College Station East. And
[22:25] Speaker 1: by the way, College Station is just whack.
[22:28] Speaker 2: College Station does.
[22:29] Speaker 1: Not scare me.
[22:34] Speaker 3: Doesn't scare you.
[22:34] Speaker 1: Right.
[22:35] Speaker 2: No, it doesn't have that. It's just college station.
[22:37] Speaker 4: Well, yeah. So college station is funny because yeah, like
[22:42] Speaker 4: when you grow up in Houston, if you have never
[22:44] Speaker 4: been up there, you assume that it's kind of close.
[22:46] Speaker 3: I thought it was just more black than it was
[22:48] Speaker 3: up there than it actually is.
[22:49] Speaker 4: And yeah, it's in a very kind of rural area,
[22:52] Speaker 4: but you know what A & M got, man?
[22:55] Speaker 3: They got them.
[22:57] Speaker 4: A & M got them, man. A & M got them, bro.
[23:03] Speaker 4: Shout out to the Southwest Black Leadership Conference they used
[23:05] Speaker 4: to have down there every fall.
[23:07] Speaker 2: It sounds like they was there for the conference.
[23:09] Speaker 3: There was other stuff. I can't say what it is.
[23:12] Speaker 4: I don't remember what it is. But it was not,
[23:15] Speaker 4: I could kind of understand going there and being like, well,
[23:19] Speaker 4: I took my wife through there once, Janae, and she
[23:21] Speaker 4: said it looked like a farm and an office complex.
[23:25] Speaker 3: And I'll say, yeah, okay.
[23:27] Speaker 1: Texas A & M got a zillion people, so they
[23:29] Speaker 1: got something, but I'm not.
[23:31] Speaker 3: It could be fun there.
[23:32] Speaker 1: I know.
[23:34] Speaker 2: I'm nodding.
[23:35] Speaker 3: It could be fun there. The Penn State thing to
[23:37] Speaker 3: me is more.
[23:38] Speaker 4: Because I'm like, okay, we don't have any proof or
[23:42] Speaker 4: concept that brothers actually will choose Penn State without some
[23:47] Speaker 4: exceptional circumstances. Joe Paterno was a whole different time, and
[23:52] Speaker 4: they were taking brothers.
[23:53] Speaker 3: way before the schools in the South were.
[23:55] Speaker 4: So they had access to talent that a lot of
[23:56] Speaker 4: other people didn't have, and Joe Paterno promoted a certain
[23:59] Speaker 4: kind of a culture that could have been welcoming to
[24:03] Speaker 4: the brothers that wanted to play there. All right, he
[24:06] Speaker 4: goes away. They get Bill O'Brien for a couple years.
[24:08] Speaker 4: Then you get James Franklin, who's a really charismatic brother
[24:11] Speaker 4: who can recruit the DMV pretty well. Like, this is
[24:13] Speaker 4: his area, getting up and down here. I mean, can...
[24:18] Speaker 4: Matt rule get the same kind of brother that want
[24:21] Speaker 4: to come now.
[24:22] Speaker 1: I mean, but they, but so this is raises the question,
[24:24] Speaker 1: which is, these are the things that have mattered forever.
[24:28] Speaker 1: And how much do they matter now that we talking
[24:30] Speaker 1: about paying people?
[24:32] Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
[24:32] Speaker 1: Well, because I, cause I mean, I think at some
[24:34] Speaker 1: point though, that there's gotta be some, like the market
[24:39] Speaker 1: for players can't have, but so much variance at a
[24:41] Speaker 1: certain level, like these things on the margins, I feel
[24:44] Speaker 1: like still have to matter because, um to a degree
[24:47] Speaker 1: especially if you're dealing with kid the kids that come
[24:48] Speaker 1: from means which is a lot more players than at
[24:51] Speaker 1: least it feels like a lot more players than it
[24:53] Speaker 1: used to be so come some of our like adages
[24:56] Speaker 1: about coming out of poverty that don't seem to apply
[24:58] Speaker 1: nearly as much as they used to to these players
[25:01] Speaker 1: um but i mean no but i do i do
[25:04] Speaker 1: think you raise a fair question now can matt real
[25:08] Speaker 1: do it but to be fair man brother's been signing
[25:10] Speaker 1: up to play for white boys forever like That's true.
[25:13] Speaker 2: That's not a new situation.
[25:14] Speaker 3: I mean, that's true.
[25:15] Speaker 4: That's true.
[25:16] Speaker 3: But they ain't signed up to play for every white
[25:17] Speaker 3: boy at every place.
[25:18] Speaker 1: No.
[25:18] Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
[25:19] Speaker 2: No.
[25:19] Speaker 4: Like, Ole Miss, it was until very recently that people
[25:23] Speaker 4: were like, all right.
[25:25] Speaker 2: I still can't believe they do it.
[25:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, right. Because we come from a time where you
[25:29] Speaker 4: could turn on TV and they just had them flags
[25:31] Speaker 4: blowing in the wind in the stands, man. Yeah.
[25:34] Speaker 1: Like.
[25:34] Speaker 4: Even Tommy Tuberville had to be like, could y'all stop
[25:37] Speaker 4: doing that?
[25:38] Speaker 1: Yes.
[25:38] Speaker 4: Y'all are making my job hard. Please stop doing that.
[25:40] Speaker 2: Y'all, you're scaring the bros.
[25:42] Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
[25:43] Speaker 4: You're scaring the bros. You're scaring the bros. But, I mean,
[25:47] Speaker 4: Ole Miss has changed. And you actually made a really
[25:50] Speaker 4: good point because I think about a lot of how
[25:53] Speaker 4: the demographics have changed and sort of like the cultural
[25:55] Speaker 4: reality for elite football.
[25:57] Speaker 3: Players has changed.
[25:58] Speaker 4: Because it ain't like the old days, man, where your
[26:02] Speaker 4: five-star is Stady Yates.
[26:04] Speaker 3: They went Yates for all four years or whatever. Like,
[26:07] Speaker 3: dumb kid.
[26:08] Speaker 4: Bobby Taylor had a kid.
[26:10] Speaker 1: Bobby Taylor who played college ball at Notre Dame and
[26:13] Speaker 1: played for the Eagles in the league.
[26:14] Speaker 3: Played for the Eagles. Six foot four corner.
[26:18] Speaker 4: His kid went to a school inside the city limits,
[26:21] Speaker 4: Houston Heights, and then he finished at Katy. And I
[26:24] Speaker 4: was just thinking about like, oh, that's the kind of
[26:26] Speaker 4: stuff that happens now.
[26:28] Speaker 1: That's a very Florida thing that really wasn't happening in
[26:31] Speaker 1: Texas before.
[26:32] Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely.
[26:34] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[26:34] Speaker 4: Kids will move out or plan out in Allen or,
[26:37] Speaker 4: you know, one of them, you know, we see brothers
[26:40] Speaker 4: playing for Westlake and Lake Travis and stuff like that now.
[26:43] Speaker 4: Stuff that just did not, usually those schools did not
[26:46] Speaker 4: have those kind of athletes.
[26:47] Speaker 1: Those alums of those schools for those who don't know Westlake,
[26:50] Speaker 1: Drew Brees High School, Lake Travis, Baker Mayfield High School,
[26:53] Speaker 1: Baker Reagan Mayfield, just so you understand the point that
[26:56] Speaker 1: we're making here.
[26:57] Speaker 4: That's right. That's right. So it was kind of, so,
[27:00] Speaker 4: you know, these kids are sort of operating, you're right.
[27:02] Speaker 4: So on that point, they operate in a different reality.
[27:05] Speaker 4: They have a very different relationship with community than we
[27:08] Speaker 4: used to have. It used to matter when, for example,
[27:12] Speaker 4: in Mizzou, Mizzou, the reason they had problems for so
[27:14] Speaker 4: long getting brothers there is that they had black media,
[27:19] Speaker 4: radio DJs in St. Louis that actively discouraged their top
[27:23] Speaker 4: black athletes from going to Mizzou. Like they would show
[27:26] Speaker 4: up at your house and be like, I can't tell
[27:28] Speaker 4: you where to go, but I wouldn't send my kid there.
[27:30] Speaker 4: And Mizzou had a real difficult time tapping into that
[27:33] Speaker 4: kind of talent because people would just that they had
[27:36] Speaker 4: just that kind of resistance but I don't even know
[27:38] Speaker 4: that that kind of community exists anymore anywhere like I
[27:41] Speaker 4: don't even know like who would be the voice that
[27:42] Speaker 4: people would listen to that would say you may not
[27:44] Speaker 4: want to go to Florida I mean you know that's
[27:46] Speaker 4: not a school that's a place that's that's sort of
[27:50] Speaker 4: hostile to you.
[27:51] Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels much more transactional now. We don't have
[27:54] Speaker 1: that much proof of concept on this, obviously. It's a
[27:56] Speaker 1: new world that we're in. But yeah, the question is
[27:59] Speaker 1: exactly how much of those little things matter. Like Forty
[28:01] Speaker 1: was on here talking the other day, and he's right
[28:03] Speaker 1: that spending money on facilities is a bad play these
[28:05] Speaker 1: days because it makes sense to spend money on facilities
[28:08] Speaker 1: when you couldn't give the money directly to the players.
[28:11] Speaker 2: Now that feels like a bad use of money. But
[28:14] Speaker 2: at the same time, one.
[28:16] Speaker 1: Would think the facilities should matter, but something to consider.
[28:19] Speaker 1: And I say this as we go into the break,
[28:22] Speaker 1: when these coaches take these jobs, they don't go, they
[28:25] Speaker 1: don't set foot on campus. If a coach has never
[28:30] Speaker 1: been to a university, there's no time for, well, I'm
[28:33] Speaker 1: going to go take a tour, let my wife go
[28:35] Speaker 1: around and check out the schools.
[28:37] Speaker 2: There's no time for that.
[28:38] Speaker 1: These guys are deciding to go to places they've literally
[28:41] Speaker 1: never been, often with facilities they've never seen.
[28:46] Speaker 4: Well, Bo, you know what? It's actually interesting. I'm hearing
[28:48] Speaker 4: that a lot, too, about transfers now, too. People that
[28:51] Speaker 4: go in transfer portals, if they've already been through the
[28:53] Speaker 4: recruiting process, they'll pick a school not even had been
[28:56] Speaker 4: on campus there, which I'm like, That's shocking to me.
[28:59] Speaker 4: I don't know that I could do that.
[29:02] Speaker 2: If you go to a place, you already took an official.
[29:04] Speaker 1: Okay, I see that. Or there's a coach there that
[29:06] Speaker 1: you like. But yeah, to me, the idea of going
[29:08] Speaker 1: to these places, especially when you have options, is wild.
[29:11] Speaker 1: But what else are they supposed to do? Yeah, man.
[29:14] Speaker 1: I always think coaches get a bad rap on the
[29:18] Speaker 1: way that they lead these schools. There's no good way
[29:21] Speaker 1: to do it. It's not possible. You don't, hey, kids,
[29:24] Speaker 1: just giving you a heads up. I might be out
[29:27] Speaker 1: of here. But then you can't come back. Right. Right.
[29:29] Speaker 4: You're out on us.
[29:30] Speaker 1: There is no coach transfer portal and everybody understands that
[29:34] Speaker 1: you're just doing what you can. Like, it's not an option.
[29:37] Speaker 1: These moves have to be made very, very quickly. And like,
[29:39] Speaker 1: the next day you got to start recruiting you just
[29:42] Speaker 1: put on a whole new hat right and you become
[29:45] Speaker 1: an entirely different person.
[29:47] Speaker 4: Absolutely yeah it's just tough man you're right i i
[29:50] Speaker 4: look i'm not a coach apologist but i do i
[29:53] Speaker 4: i think it just kind of like we've just done,
[29:55] Speaker 4: I think people do have to kind of understand the
[29:57] Speaker 4: reality of coaches has changed a lot now, man.
[29:59] Speaker 3: Like this is a very difficult job.
[30:01] Speaker 4: And even if you've excelled at it in the previous decade,
[30:05] Speaker 4: there was some evidence that Nick Saban wasn't quite acclimating
[30:08] Speaker 4: to the new era as much as he liked, right?
[30:10] Speaker 4: Like those Alabama, those last couple of Alabama teams weren't
[30:12] Speaker 4: as good as the ones of earlier vintage. So it's,
[30:15] Speaker 4: People are going to need time to figure it out.
[30:18] Speaker 4: And because of all these shifting dynamics, you know, I mean,
[30:21] Speaker 4: a lot of people clearly going to get fired until
[30:23] Speaker 4: we finally settle into this stuff.
[30:25] Speaker 1: All right. We got some media talk coming up next.

[31:50] Speaker 4: All right.
[31:51] Speaker 1: So I talk about Hayden as Joel doing the ranger
[31:54] Speaker 1: tailgate podcast, but he also does another podcast where Brian
[31:58] Speaker 1: Curtis called the press box where he makes faces just
[32:01] Speaker 1: like the one that he made. because they be spitting
[32:03] Speaker 1: truth on there like I just spit truth so the
[32:06] Speaker 1: truth be making him scrunch his face up sometimes again.
[32:09] Speaker 4: I mean people that know me know that I love
[32:10] Speaker 4: my nobody will ever say I don't love my people
[32:13] Speaker 4: oh sorry I'm not your people well I'm just saying
[32:17] Speaker 4: you're the one that came on here treating me like.
[32:18] Speaker 2: This treating you like this.
[32:21] Speaker 4: I mean people rewind the tape you can go it's
[32:24] Speaker 4: on YouTube just go back and you can see how
[32:26] Speaker 4: Bo welcomed me onto the show it's fine you still
[32:29] Speaker 4: my brother dog I love you dog.
[32:30] Speaker 3: It's okay I'm tough. I have thick skin.
[32:35] Speaker 2: No, you don't.
[32:36] Speaker 4: I don't.
[32:40] Speaker 1: But the press box, you guys talk about media issues
[32:43] Speaker 1: and something I've seen awful announcing broach, and I think
[32:45] Speaker 1: you guys got into it a little bit on your part,
[32:47] Speaker 1: but I do think is interesting is that the stick
[32:51] Speaker 1: to sports people won, right? Like we really do just
[32:56] Speaker 1: kind of stick and ball discussions. They even find that
[32:58] Speaker 1: a lot of my content moved more in that direction,
[33:00] Speaker 1: but it's in part because it did feel in a
[33:02] Speaker 1: way like much of the audience wanted to move kind
[33:06] Speaker 1: of back in that direction.
[33:07] Speaker 2: And I do think that if you look at nine, 10.
[33:09] Speaker 1: Years ago, the topics that are kind of running the game,
[33:13] Speaker 1: we don't have a Colin Kaepernick right now, right? Like
[33:15] Speaker 1: we don't have, there is no, there's no like Joe Paterno,
[33:19] Speaker 1: Penn State scandal of the likes. Like, and I don't,
[33:22] Speaker 1: or maybe these things are happening and we just don't
[33:23] Speaker 1: talk about it. I don't have the greatest answer exactly
[33:26] Speaker 1: for that. But this gambling story, is one that felt
[33:31] Speaker 1: like it would have been wall-to-wall coverage all over the
[33:34] Speaker 1: place with a zillion different angles on how to explore
[33:38] Speaker 1: it with lots of lawyers, some who are still lawyers,
[33:41] Speaker 1: some who are lawyers that were turned sports bloggers, but
[33:43] Speaker 1: giving their read on the paperwork and everything else. And
[33:46] Speaker 1: it feels like sports media has actually somehow gotten less
[33:51] Speaker 1: interesting and less adept in the course of the last
[33:54] Speaker 1: 10 years to tackle things where I felt like we
[33:57] Speaker 1: were in a golden age 10 years ago to give
[34:00] Speaker 1: you everything you needed on a story like this. And
[34:03] Speaker 1: it doesn't feel like we're equipped to do that anymore,
[34:06] Speaker 1: especially not on television.
[34:08] Speaker 4: Well, I mean, when we can get the television, but
[34:10] Speaker 4: just think about how much sports media has been hollowed
[34:13] Speaker 4: out just in the last few years from like the
[34:15] Speaker 4: regional sports networks to ESPN has cut back a lot.
[34:21] Speaker 4: They really don't have it. I mean, how much do
[34:24] Speaker 4: you think they've reduced their workforce in the last five
[34:26] Speaker 4: to six years? I mean, that's a lot less programming
[34:29] Speaker 4: and people over there. Deadspin is not what it was.
[34:33] Speaker 4: Sports Illustrated, not what it was. ESPN the magazine don't
[34:37] Speaker 4: exist no more. So when you're looking for all this stuff,
[34:40] Speaker 4: the kind of deeply reported, well thought out work, that
[34:45] Speaker 4: we were enjoying 10, 12 years ago, I mean, either
[34:49] Speaker 4: people didn't support it or it just went bankrupt and
[34:51] Speaker 4: went away, didn't develop enough of an audience. So here
[34:55] Speaker 4: we are. Because where are you getting your news from now?
[34:58] Speaker 2: That's a good question.
[34:59] Speaker 1: I just feel like I get it. I couldn't give
[35:02] Speaker 1: you a great answer, but the thing is, this is
[35:05] Speaker 1: a story where people need it, man. First of all,
[35:10] Speaker 1: it is interesting to think that this would have been
[35:12] Speaker 1: a much bigger scandal as recently as 10 years ago,
[35:15] Speaker 1: certainly 30 years ago.
[35:16] Speaker 4: I mean, Chauncey Billups, man, he's an NBA Hall of Famer.
[35:20] Speaker 1: He's an NBA Hall of Famer and current head coach.
[35:23] Speaker 4: Possibly, allegedly, to have maybe tipped off people about, hey, man,
[35:28] Speaker 4: I'm going to send some people for this guy. I mean,
[35:30] Speaker 4: that is crazy. Isn't that more outrageous than what Pete
[35:34] Speaker 4: Rose did, was accused of doing?
[35:36] Speaker 1: Well, no, Pete Rose was, okay, so here's the difference.
[35:41] Speaker 5: Okay.
[35:42] Speaker 2: Pete Rose was making similar calls to receive information.
[35:47] Speaker 1: And then rather than give it to other people, was
[35:50] Speaker 1: using it on his own, which I think is fair
[35:53] Speaker 1: to say was actually more outrageous than, you know, like
[35:58] Speaker 1: he was actually placing the bets as opposed to like
[36:01] Speaker 1: perhaps looking out for somebody.
[36:02] Speaker 3: That's fair.
[36:02] Speaker 4: But it was like he was betting on himself. I mean,
[36:04] Speaker 4: the thing about Pete Rose never bet against himself.
[36:06] Speaker 2: There was that.
[36:07] Speaker 1: He was betting other things too. The key was that
[36:09] Speaker 1: he never bet against himself.
[36:11] Speaker 3: Never bet against himself. That's right.
[36:13] Speaker 4: So that's kind of, maybe that's what the way I
[36:14] Speaker 4: come from it. Um, as opposed to being like, well,
[36:17] Speaker 4: we might, I might be the reason that we lose tonight. Right.
[36:21] Speaker 3: Here's how you can make some money on it. Allegedly.
[36:24] Speaker 4: Um, but yeah, I mean, that is a huge, I mean,
[36:27] Speaker 4: Pete Rose held down sports media for so long. Like
[36:32] Speaker 4: we've pretended to really care about gambling and its implications
[36:35] Speaker 4: and what it could do for people's reputations and everything
[36:37] Speaker 4: else for 30 years of my life.
[36:40] Speaker 1: Oh, I think people cared. then.
[36:42] Speaker 2: I don't think that that was phony. Oh, I think
[36:44] Speaker 2: people cared then, too. I think they cared. And I'll
[36:47] Speaker 2: tell you this. I took a job in 2009.
[36:49] Speaker 1: This is when I took the job with the score,
[36:51] Speaker 1: doing the Morning Jones. And my boss at the time,
[36:53] Speaker 1: Mike Gentile, he'd been a radio producer, and he was like, look,
[36:56] Speaker 1: you have a slow day to this day. And he says,
[37:00] Speaker 1: to this day, you have a slow day? Ask if
[37:02] Speaker 1: Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.
[37:05] Speaker 2: And hold on. Keep in mind that he was in Canada.
[37:08] Speaker 2: I mean, man.
[37:09] Speaker 1: It wasn't even the United States.
[37:12] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[37:13] Speaker 2: Right.
[37:13] Speaker 1: Like it was still a go. But I think that
[37:16] Speaker 1: there's a lot of depth to this that I don't.
[37:20] Speaker 1: It's wild to think that we're not even necessarily that
[37:22] Speaker 1: qualified to get into it, even though we got all
[37:24] Speaker 1: these people who engage in gambling. But the problem is, like,
[37:27] Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw where Charles Barkley was
[37:28] Speaker 1: talking about it, where he was like, these guys are
[37:29] Speaker 1: just stupid. And what Charles sounded like was a drunk
[37:33] Speaker 1: who has disdain for alcoholics because they bad for the brand.
[37:37] Speaker 4: Right. So I think that's the thing is that I
[37:40] Speaker 4: can't relate to. And I assume you can't. I don't
[37:42] Speaker 4: have that kind of advice. Right. So I don't it
[37:44] Speaker 4: doesn't hit me. And we're talking about this a little earlier.
[37:48] Speaker 4: So I got a call from a sports book the
[37:51] Speaker 4: other day, a sports book that I use for work
[37:53] Speaker 4: sometimes just to give some just like an informational thing,
[37:57] Speaker 4: not to gamble or whatever, put money on stuff. And
[38:01] Speaker 4: they called me and I'm thinking, oh, this is about
[38:04] Speaker 4: something related to my work. And they're like, we noticed
[38:06] Speaker 4: that you had opened your account and you haven't used
[38:09] Speaker 4: it yet. You haven't fully set it up yet. Do
[38:11] Speaker 4: you need any help with that? Or is there any
[38:12] Speaker 4: reason you hadn't done that? And I'm like, you all
[38:15] Speaker 4: are checking on me like that for real? Like, I mean,
[38:18] Speaker 4: that was crazy. They wanted, they were so insistent on
[38:21] Speaker 4: the idea that I should be gambling. I opened this account.
[38:24] Speaker 4: I should be putting some money on something. I should
[38:25] Speaker 4: be doing some games. I'm like, man, if they'll chase
[38:27] Speaker 4: you down and you're weak like that, if you have the,
[38:30] Speaker 4: not weak, I shouldn't say that.
[38:31] Speaker 1: But if you have- No, hold on, hold on, hold on.
[38:35] Speaker 2: It's okay. I think, to say weak. Like, and I'm saying,
[38:39] Speaker 2: if you're weak, I'm saying, I.
[38:41] Speaker 1: Know, but I'm saying, but I mean, strong has to
[38:45] Speaker 1: have an opposite, right? And in this particular way, people
[38:50] Speaker 1: have weaknesses, right? Like, I don't think, maybe it's impossible
[38:54] Speaker 1: to separate weak from a larger connotation. But if this is,
[38:58] Speaker 1: calling it a vice and calling it a weakness are
[39:00] Speaker 1: not different things.
[39:02] Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
[39:03] Speaker 1: So if you're shaky in this regard... then you're going
[39:06] Speaker 1: to shake.
[39:07] Speaker 3: You're going to shake.
[39:08] Speaker 4: Okay. Well, I guess I, the way I'm trying to
[39:10] Speaker 4: think of it is that like, you know, everybody has their,
[39:13] Speaker 4: you know, that's me and sugar, you know what I mean?
[39:15] Speaker 1: Right.
[39:16] Speaker 4: Um, yeah. So, um, but yeah, so, but yeah, okay.
[39:20] Speaker 4: We can, we can say that it's a weakness then, but,
[39:23] Speaker 4: I mean, just imagine that you're trying to stay away
[39:26] Speaker 4: from that stuff. You can't get away. They are so
[39:30] Speaker 4: pressed to find more customers and to expand it that
[39:33] Speaker 4: they will call you.
[39:35] Speaker 1: So what I thought was wild about that when you
[39:37] Speaker 1: said it was, I'm thinking strategically on their front, them
[39:43] Speaker 1: calling to get you to set it up, that feel
[39:47] Speaker 1: like a set up.
[39:49] Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
[39:51] Speaker 5: Right?
[39:51] Speaker 1: Like, this sounds like something I don't need to be doing.
[39:54] Speaker 1: If you'd have pressed about getting me into this. This
[39:56] Speaker 1: sounds like something I don't need to be doing. It
[39:58] Speaker 1: seems like them phone, like, do you need any help
[40:00] Speaker 1: setting up the account? Like, I can read.
[40:03] Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
[40:05] Speaker 1: Like, I know how to fill out a form. I
[40:07] Speaker 1: feel like you trying to get me. Like, this is
[40:09] Speaker 1: how I know. They tell me, hey, why don't you
[40:11] Speaker 1: just come down the alley in Goodfellas?
[40:14] Speaker 3: Just go down there.
[40:16] Speaker 2: Just go down there and they'll take care of you.
[40:17] Speaker 2: Just go down there. I'm like, no, no, no.
[40:19] Speaker 1: You're a little too pressed about getting me to go
[40:21] Speaker 1: down that alley.
[40:22] Speaker 2: I ain't going to do that.
[40:22] Speaker 1: But if I had already started now is the time
[40:25] Speaker 1: for you to call me. Now that I done hit
[40:27] Speaker 1: this rock, now there's a chance that you might be
[40:30] Speaker 1: able to get me going on something.
[40:33] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's right.
[40:35] Speaker 4: I don't know what they thought was going to happen here,
[40:37] Speaker 4: but yeah, I mean, because clearly I wasn't inclined to
[40:41] Speaker 4: get involved in this, but maybe they thought that I
[40:43] Speaker 4: was involved with another sports book or had another. Maybe
[40:45] Speaker 4: they were concerned that I was giving my money away
[40:48] Speaker 4: to somebody else. But this is kind of my theory
[40:51] Speaker 4: about life, and gambling is very different. Man, if you
[40:53] Speaker 4: got to tell me how good it is and you
[40:55] Speaker 4: got to pitch it to me like that, I'm just
[40:57] Speaker 4: going to be a little bit concerned about why doesn't
[40:59] Speaker 4: this sell itself?
[41:00] Speaker 3: I don't understand.
[41:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, they just need you to give
[41:04] Speaker 1: it a try because of everything that you got to
[41:07] Speaker 1: get past. You know what I mean? It's, they like,
[41:13] Speaker 1: should I make this comparison? All I'm saying is sometimes
[41:19] Speaker 1: the approach is to try to get people to understand
[41:22] Speaker 1: that societal norms.
[41:24] Speaker 2: are not necessarily the be-all, end-all. You know what I'm saying?
[41:27] Speaker 2: And sometimes you got to do what you.
[41:29] Speaker 1: Want to do.
[41:31] Speaker 4: Like, you know?
[41:32] Speaker 2: Like, come on.
[41:33] Speaker 1: Ain't nobody going to look at you no different tomorrow.
[41:35] Speaker 4: Right?
[41:37] Speaker 1: Like, come on. No, no, no, no.
[41:39] Speaker 4: And ain't nobody even paying attention to you like that.
[41:41] Speaker 1: I ain't going to say nothing to my friends.
[41:43] Speaker 4: You know?
[41:44] Speaker 1: Like....
[41:47] Speaker 4: We don't yeah i mean that is very true they're
[41:49] Speaker 4: like hey man and i ain't nobody gonna say that
[41:51] Speaker 4: nobody paying attention to you right now the thought that
[41:53] Speaker 4: like you just you're sort of anonymous to the world
[41:55] Speaker 4: right yes yeah yeah yeah no that's right that's right
[41:58] Speaker 4: i mean but i just i don't know man i
[42:01] Speaker 4: mean i i have real empathy for people that are
[42:04] Speaker 4: and it worries me i have a son man and
[42:06] Speaker 4: i guess i have a you know i have a
[42:07] Speaker 4: daughter too but i mean of the two that's more
[42:09] Speaker 4: likely to develop an addiction to gambling obviously it's the
[42:12] Speaker 4: boy and i'm like how do you avoid that when
[42:14] Speaker 4: you hear so many stories about kids having sports books
[42:18] Speaker 4: open on their phone at school or they're just hanging out.
[42:20] Speaker 4: I'm just like, the idea of casually gambling in college,
[42:24] Speaker 4: like that just seemed like.
[42:24] Speaker 3: A grown man thing to do.
[42:26] Speaker 1: Yo, or at the very least a white man thing
[42:29] Speaker 1: to do. I was amazed to find out how many
[42:32] Speaker 1: people gambled on sports. Like, I don't feel like that
[42:34] Speaker 1: was a thing. When I got my college, I didn't
[42:36] Speaker 1: feel like cocaine was really a thing. And I didn't
[42:38] Speaker 1: feel like sports. I didn't know these two things was
[42:40] Speaker 1: out here. Then I started kicking.
[42:41] Speaker 2: It with white boys. And it was a whole nother world.
[42:44] Speaker 4: I definitely thought gambling was a white boy thing.
[42:47] Speaker 1: But that's not the case anymore. And you notice, man,
[42:49] Speaker 1: they pushing hard on black people platforms. Like Joe Button
[42:52] Speaker 1: doing prize picks commercials, for example.
[42:54] Speaker 3: I know, man.
[42:57] Speaker 1: I mean, I guess they did with me, too. I mean,
[42:58] Speaker 1: I guess this counts in the same way.
[43:00] Speaker 4: I mean, they're getting this, man. I mean, it reminds me.
[43:03] Speaker 3: It was funny.
[43:04] Speaker 4: I don't know why I looked up Joe Cool or
[43:06] Speaker 4: Joe Camel the other day.
[43:08] Speaker 2: Oh, I got it by Joe Camel.
[43:09] Speaker 4: I was thinking about, I was like, what made people
[43:12] Speaker 4: come up with Joe Camel? And Joe Camel was an
[43:14] Speaker 4: invention of 1988.
[43:17] Speaker 3: Like, I thought it was.
[43:18] Speaker 1: Really?
[43:18] Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm thinking this was, it went back to the
[43:22] Speaker 4: 50s and 60s or whatever. And, you know, for people
[43:25] Speaker 4: that don't know Joe Camel, I mean, it was like
[43:27] Speaker 4: just a very cartoon Camel.
[43:31] Speaker 2: For Camel Cigarettes.
[43:32] Speaker 4: For Camel Cigarettes. And they would dress him up. He
[43:35] Speaker 4: had a whole bunch of different outfits. Sometimes he'd be
[43:37] Speaker 4: looking like Billy Dee Williams at a piano. Sometimes he
[43:40] Speaker 4: looked like James Dean or a motorcycle. It was stuff
[43:43] Speaker 4: like that. And so they were trying to sell the
[43:45] Speaker 4: image of it as cool to a younger generation and
[43:48] Speaker 4: a more urban clientele. And I'm just like, oh, is
[43:52] Speaker 4: this what gambling is now? Has it just kind of
[43:54] Speaker 4: become a thing where it's like, all right, well, you
[43:56] Speaker 4: see Jamie Foxx and all these other people talking, Joe
[43:59] Speaker 4: Budden talking about, I'm putting some money on jalen brunson
[44:03] Speaker 4: or whatever and it's like i guess like the stigma
[44:04] Speaker 4: of that or the idea that this is a world
[44:06] Speaker 4: that will welcome you in and you can get in
[44:09] Speaker 4: and gamble like the.
[44:10] Speaker 1: White boys you know and also let me tell you
[44:12] Speaker 1: this about camel cigarettes there's a good chance if you
[44:14] Speaker 1: meet a woman and she got a box of camel
[44:16] Speaker 1: cigarettes on the bar that's also a jack and coke
[44:19] Speaker 1: in that glass.
[44:22] Speaker 3: Have you you've known a woman that smoked camel.
[44:24] Speaker 2: Cigarettes yes i have.
[44:27] Speaker 1: She was a Jack and Coke drinker, too. I'm just
[44:31] Speaker 1: telling you. There's certain things that go together.
[44:35] Speaker 3: Man.
[44:37] Speaker 2: No, but that is.
[44:39] Speaker 2: The gambling people.
[44:41] Speaker 1: I had lost track of how many of these places
[44:42] Speaker 1: they give you free money to start playing. Because they
[44:45] Speaker 1: know that once you get you in, you'll do a
[44:48] Speaker 1: little bit more.
[44:49] Speaker 3: Have you tried? Have you done any of this at all?
[44:51] Speaker 1: No, no, no.
[44:52] Speaker 2: I don't... I think it is.
[44:55] Speaker 1: There's something about, to me, that doing this job makes
[44:58] Speaker 1: me feel like that's something I should not do.
[45:00] Speaker 3: Okay.
[45:01] Speaker 1: On top of that, I understand the type of ego
[45:05] Speaker 1: that I have, and this feels like something I should
[45:07] Speaker 1: be able to outsmart, which is what everybody thinks about this.
[45:12] Speaker 1: And then, by the way, once you start winning, they
[45:14] Speaker 1: stop letting you play.
[45:16] Speaker 4: But wait, so, I mean, you know, Nick is, I mean,
[45:19] Speaker 4: like you said, is well-versed in this, and he does
[45:22] Speaker 4: high-stakes poker games, all that good stuff. So that didn't
[45:25] Speaker 4: influence you at all, thinking like, you know, because there's
[45:27] Speaker 4: a part of me that thinks.
[45:28] Speaker 2: No, no, no, please understand this.
[45:29] Speaker 4: Those gamblers know a lot about the game, too. And
[45:32] Speaker 4: I'm just like, I wonder if it would help me
[45:34] Speaker 4: to know a lot about the game.
[45:35] Speaker 2: Now, that is a fair point.
[45:36] Speaker 1: I talk to guys who play in the business and
[45:38] Speaker 1: that is their rationale for doing this. But please understand,
[45:41] Speaker 1: hanging out with Nick on a Sunday afternoon watching football
[45:44] Speaker 1: is not a commercial for gambling.
[45:46] Speaker 2: It is much more a commercial for the 800 number.
[45:49] Speaker 1: Then it is something that makes you think that this
[45:51] Speaker 1: is something that you should engage in. No, no, no, no, no.
[45:54] Speaker 1: Nothing about watching Nick on Sunday makes gambling look attractive.
[45:58] Speaker 1: Fair point. It's very similar to the example I make.
[46:01] Speaker 1: It feels a lot like watching Uncut Gems.
[46:03] Speaker 4: Well, you know, Van gives the example. I'm sure he
[46:08] Speaker 4: told it on here, too, about, like, he asked one
[46:11] Speaker 4: of his uncles or somebody, why you do crack?
[46:13] Speaker 3: And he's like, I'm looking at y'all, like, why y'all didn't?
[46:15] Speaker 4: You know, why y'all ain't do it? Yeah.
[46:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[46:19] Speaker 4: So my thing is about gambling and sport. I don't
[46:24] Speaker 4: need to care about sports like that. I feel like
[46:26] Speaker 4: competition is, I don't need fantasy football. The competition alone,
[46:31] Speaker 4: the pageantry, the opportunity to sit down and enjoy. I
[46:34] Speaker 4: don't need that. And I don't want to be emotionally
[46:36] Speaker 4: invested in a game like that.
[46:38] Speaker 1: Well, what it makes you, what it helps with is
[46:40] Speaker 1: caring about the games that you don't care about.
[46:42] Speaker 4: Right.
[46:43] Speaker 1: Right. And like, to me, I feel like if I
[46:47] Speaker 1: need to make myself care about this, therefore I put
[46:50] Speaker 1: some money on it. Have you thought about curling up
[46:53] Speaker 1: with a good book? Or perhaps some other activity. Just
[47:01] Speaker 1: throwing it out there.
[47:02] Speaker 4: I mean, what was it the other week I told
[47:04] Speaker 4: you I was watching Sam Houston State versus Utah?
[47:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you definitely had money on the guy.
[47:08] Speaker 4: You thought you can think there was any possible way.
[47:10] Speaker 4: I said, no, man, I just want to watch football.
[47:12] Speaker 4: And I don't need no money to put put, you know,
[47:15] Speaker 4: do a prop bit to make myself enjoy it. And
[47:17] Speaker 4: I mean, again, I, I'm grateful for that. I understand
[47:20] Speaker 4: if you don't feel that way, then, you know, Hey man,
[47:23] Speaker 4: go with God. But I, I mean, they are praying
[47:26] Speaker 4: upon our week on, on people's vices and introducing them
[47:29] Speaker 4: to things and making them think that they could be
[47:31] Speaker 4: smarter than they are. And I also kind of think
[47:32] Speaker 4: that just because of like the way the economy is
[47:35] Speaker 4: and the job market, I wonder how many people, and
[47:38] Speaker 4: I'm not, I wonder how many people think that they
[47:40] Speaker 4: can make money actually.
[47:42] Speaker 1: Yo, that's the thing about it is that if you're
[47:44] Speaker 1: doing it for fun, that's one thing. But if your
[47:46] Speaker 1: plan is I'm about to hit for this lick, that's not.
[47:53] Speaker 2: Really how this works, brother.
[47:55] Speaker 3: I mean, there's a reason they're sponsoring everything now. You
[47:58] Speaker 3: know what I mean? Like all them people.
[47:59] Speaker 1: Hey, man, they just like, look, it really is like rock.
[48:01] Speaker 1: They just like, look, man, we can get you to
[48:03] Speaker 1: hit that rock one time, baby. All we need you
[48:05] Speaker 1: to do is hit that rock one time, right? And
[48:08] Speaker 1: then after that, the rock going to take care of it.
[48:12] Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? After you hit that rock
[48:14] Speaker 1: one time, the rock sell itself. I think I told
[48:20] Speaker 1: you once, one of my guys told me he took
[48:23] Speaker 1: jazz piano lessons and he said that he took piano
[48:26] Speaker 1: lessons from a jazz piano player. He said that he
[48:32] Speaker 1: told the story of that day where all the jazz
[48:34] Speaker 1: men did heroin. He's like, I'm a jazz man now.
[48:37] Speaker 1: I'm going to do heroin. He said he shot that
[48:39] Speaker 1: heroin up one time and he said that As it
[48:42] Speaker 1: was going, he looked at whoever it was and was like, hey, man,
[48:46] Speaker 1: don't you ever let me do this ever again. He
[48:49] Speaker 1: was like, I will be strung out on this shit
[48:53] Speaker 1: so fast. He said he could not imagine feeling better
[48:56] Speaker 1: than he did off that. I mean, it got to
[48:58] Speaker 1: be right. How good something got to feel for you
[49:01] Speaker 1: to shoot it?
[49:02] Speaker 4: I would be very afraid. I mean, I don't think
[49:06] Speaker 4: I don't think I could. It could get me like that,
[49:08] Speaker 4: but yeah, I mean, it is kind of scary how
[49:10] Speaker 4: bad people want it, man.
[49:11] Speaker 1: Oh, clearly it could get you. Like, everybody else is
[49:13] Speaker 1: telling you that very, very, very clearly it could get you.
[49:17] Speaker 4: I mean, how much better do you need your high
[49:20] Speaker 4: to be, man? I.
[49:24] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[49:25] Speaker 1: I just... See, that's the thing. It's not about need.
[49:28] Speaker 1: That's the mistake everybody makes is thinking it's about need.
[49:31] Speaker 1: It's not about need. It's just about want, right? Like, that's...
[49:37] Speaker 1: It's just about want. And yeah, it couldn't be me.
[49:42] Speaker 3: I guess so.
[49:42] Speaker 1: I mean, and when I say it couldn't be me,
[49:44] Speaker 1: not couldn't be me to get strung out. I just
[49:46] Speaker 1: got to keep myself out of that discussion. Right. And
[49:49] Speaker 1: I think that's part of it with the gambling, man.
[49:52] Speaker 1: Got to keep it. I think this is the biggest thing.
[49:56] Speaker 1: And I think I've talked about this before, but the
[49:58] Speaker 1: point that was made that the smartphone stopped online from
[50:00] Speaker 1: being a place you went to being a place that
[50:02] Speaker 1: goes with you everywhere.
[50:03] Speaker 2: So yeah.
[50:04] Speaker 1: When I go to Vegas, I play blackjack and I
[50:07] Speaker 1: might lose a couple thousand dollars in the course of
[50:09] Speaker 1: the weekend because I made that decision before I show
[50:11] Speaker 1: up that I'm going to play X amount of dollars
[50:13] Speaker 1: in blackjack. Maybe it'll go up a little more, but
[50:16] Speaker 1: I'm here. I'm going to have a good time.
[50:17] Speaker 2: I am going to play it. And then when I.
[50:18] Speaker 1: Leave the casino, I have left. With these sports books,
[50:22] Speaker 1: you never leave.
[50:24] Speaker 2: Right.
[50:24] Speaker 3: It's always there with you.
[50:25] Speaker 1: It's always wherever it is that you go. And that
[50:29] Speaker 1: to me, I think, is where this is different than
[50:32] Speaker 1: it had ever been before.
[50:33] Speaker 4: And you can check, I mean, it's actually, I mean,
[50:36] Speaker 4: if you just kind of back up for a little bit, Beau,
[50:38] Speaker 4: I mean, in addition to the proliferation of, you know, smartphones, just,
[50:44] Speaker 4: I mean, we really just got acclimated all of a
[50:47] Speaker 4: sudden to them holding major sporting events in Vegas. Yes.
[50:50] Speaker 4: You know, just like everything, like I just, it kind
[50:52] Speaker 4: of has been a remarkable shift over the course of
[50:55] Speaker 4: our lifetime because they were so deathly scared, so deathly
[50:57] Speaker 4: afraid of like, you know, the black socks or the
[51:01] Speaker 4: old NYU scandals. Like those things were actually, if you
[51:04] Speaker 4: were a sports fan and you kind of, those stories
[51:06] Speaker 4: were real, they were scary stories, man, about like how
[51:10] Speaker 4: they could totally destroy your reputation. And I just kind
[51:14] Speaker 4: of felt like, you know, I mean, I don't, I
[51:17] Speaker 4: don't know what's responsible for our changing wars around that stuff, but,
[51:22] Speaker 4: but I guess we, we just need a ways to sell,
[51:24] Speaker 4: to sell things to more people.
[51:25] Speaker 3: Maybe that's just what it is. And we're running out
[51:27] Speaker 3: of things to sell.
[51:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing.
[51:29] Speaker 1: That's the issue is we're running out of new ways
[51:32] Speaker 1: to get this money. Last thing before we get out
[51:35] Speaker 1: of here. Deion Sanders is going to be the coach
[51:37] Speaker 1: of Colorado in 2026. Why?
[51:41] Speaker 3: Why would he be? I mean, what is he?
[51:44] Speaker 4: Look, man. So the one thing we know about Deion
[51:46] Speaker 4: is that he coached his sons basically every step of
[51:48] Speaker 4: the way. Youth ball, high school ball, college at two
[51:53] Speaker 4: different schools.
[51:54] Speaker 3: So that is.
[51:55] Speaker 4: I mean, that is an accomplishment. That's great. I would
[51:59] Speaker 4: love if I had that as part of my story, right?
[52:02] Speaker 4: That I got to coach my kids all the way
[52:04] Speaker 4: through and enjoy a lot of success and a lot
[52:07] Speaker 4: of attention. They're gone now. He's not doing well, like health-wise.
[52:12] Speaker 4: He already told you he don't want to recruit. He
[52:14] Speaker 4: didn't want to recruit. He told, I don't need to
[52:17] Speaker 4: leave Colorado to do this. So that to me, that
[52:21] Speaker 4: shows that like you actually don't kind of enjoy it.
[52:23] Speaker 4: a lot of parts of this thing. So what, what
[52:26] Speaker 4: are they building towards? Like, what are you, what are
[52:29] Speaker 4: you like, what is he coming back to next year?
[52:30] Speaker 4: What are these other kids coming back to next year?
[52:32] Speaker 2: And by the way, on the, um, short list of
[52:35] Speaker 2: C ain't no racism.
[52:37] Speaker 1: Brian Kelly out here getting killed for not being out
[52:39] Speaker 1: here doing the recruiting.
[52:41] Speaker 2: And Deion Sanders is like, for who?
[52:43] Speaker 1: For what? Brian Kelly, I guarantee you, Brian Kelly highlighting
[52:47] Speaker 1: that article and sending it to everybody.
[52:49] Speaker 4: Like, what about Deion, huh?
[52:51] Speaker 1: What about him?
[52:52] Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Brian, people like Deion.
[52:55] Speaker 1: Bro, and that has to drive him even crazier.
[52:56] Speaker 4: I know, right.
[52:58] Speaker 1: Because Brian Kelly's thing is he doesn't understand what the
[53:00] Speaker 1: problem is. And look, I don't know the man. I
[53:04] Speaker 1: don't know what the problem is either. But he doesn't
[53:05] Speaker 1: understand what the problem is.
[53:07] Speaker 4: I mean, do you think, I mean, he got to
[53:09] Speaker 4: know by now, right?
[53:10] Speaker 1: Clearly he does not.
[53:11] Speaker 4: Because the way, I mean, people just, I mean, celebrating,
[53:15] Speaker 4: you know? Like, I mean, it just, he wasn't a
[53:18] Speaker 4: bad coach. It didn't go five and seven. Like, the
[53:21] Speaker 4: program did not, like, hemorrhage or anything.
[53:23] Speaker 1: It just.
[53:25] Speaker 4: I'm just shocked that people hate him in that way.
[53:27] Speaker 4: I mean, again, so if you– I mean, I take
[53:30] Speaker 4: seriously the idea that a kid that worked on his
[53:33] Speaker 4: football staff died under his leadership, right? Like when he
[53:38] Speaker 4: was at Notre Dame, a kid– they had practice on
[53:40] Speaker 4: a very windy day, and the kid, I think his
[53:42] Speaker 4: name was Declan Sullivan, fell off the riser.
[53:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, Declan, yeah.
[53:46] Speaker 3: That's right, Declan, right, yeah.
[53:47] Speaker 4: So anyway, so yeah, so I get that, but I just–
[53:53] Speaker 4: I don't think that would stop a lot of other
[53:55] Speaker 4: people from hating other coaches.
[53:57] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[53:58] Speaker 4: Like, I don't think a lot of other coaches would
[54:00] Speaker 4: get this, would be branded like this if they had
[54:02] Speaker 4: that in their background, sadly enough.
[54:04] Speaker 3: But for Deion, man.
[54:07] Speaker 4: Like, also, bro, man, Carucci don't want to, I mean,
[54:10] Speaker 4: you know, she probably, I probably want to come back
[54:12] Speaker 4: to Dallas. So this is what I, so I want
[54:15] Speaker 4: to give some clarity on this because I talked about
[54:18] Speaker 4: Deion coaching at TCU.
[54:20] Speaker 3: I wanted him there before they hired Sonny. Sonny Dykes.
[54:24] Speaker 1: Who got you to a national championship game and you
[54:26] Speaker 1: gave him no credit for it.
[54:27] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[54:28] Speaker 3: I mean, look, was I wrong? I mean, was I wrong?
[54:32] Speaker 1: Who got you to a national championship game and you
[54:34] Speaker 1: gave him no credit for it.
[54:35] Speaker 4: Again, I think he's a nice guy, whatever, but it
[54:38] Speaker 4: is what it is.
[54:39] Speaker 1: All he did was get you to a national championship game.
[54:41] Speaker 1: Why are you telling everybody else that they should be
[54:43] Speaker 1: satisfied with what their situations are?
[54:47] Speaker 4: I didn't say, you know, at this point, certainly this year,
[54:49] Speaker 4: I think we should just keep it. Let's ride it
[54:52] Speaker 4: out and see what happens. But, I mean, the thing
[54:57] Speaker 4: about Dion, I think if Dion had gotten a TCU job,
[55:00] Speaker 4: I feel like this would all look a lot different.
[55:02] Speaker 4: He doesn't have no connections to Colorado. It's hard to
[55:04] Speaker 4: get people to go over there. Like, they don't have
[55:06] Speaker 4: no home. TCU, man, he lives in an area... maybe
[55:09] Speaker 4: one of the best recruiting areas. He'd be close to home.
[55:12] Speaker 4: I think he would be energized by being there. Like,
[55:15] Speaker 4: you know, if he'd been hired those many years ago
[55:18] Speaker 4: and he was going through these health issues, I don't
[55:20] Speaker 4: think people would be like, oh, man, this is his
[55:23] Speaker 4: last year.
[55:23] Speaker 3: But because we.
[55:24] Speaker 4: All know that he ain't got no connection to Colorado,
[55:26] Speaker 4: there's no reason for him to be there anymore.
[55:28] Speaker 3: That's why I think people say him.
[55:30] Speaker 1: Does TCU have enough money to be competitive in the
[55:32] Speaker 1: way that you're talking about, though?
[55:33] Speaker 2: Because that seems to be the biggest problem.
[55:35] Speaker 1: No, but I say the biggest problem at Colorado seems
[55:37] Speaker 1: to be that they don't have the money. And so
[55:38] Speaker 1: the idea that it would be much different at TCU,
[55:41] Speaker 1: I think, entirely depends on whether they have the money.
[55:43] Speaker 4: I think they've got decent money. I don't know if
[55:46] Speaker 4: they've got, you know, Indiana, LSU money. But I don't
[55:49] Speaker 4: think he needs that. And I definitely don't think.
[55:53] Speaker 2: He needs that at DW.
[55:54] Speaker 1: I think the money has also diminished the comparative advantage
[55:58] Speaker 1: of having Deion Sanders.
[56:00] Speaker 4: Okay.
[56:01] Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like, you got to pay him.
[56:03] Speaker 1: Like, it was one thing. He would never have gotten
[56:05] Speaker 1: Travis Hunter to go to Jackson State if the money
[56:08] Speaker 1: was what it is now.
[56:09] Speaker 2: And look, that's only four years ago or three. Like,
[56:11] Speaker 2: it's changed that fast.
[56:13] Speaker 4: That's right.
[56:13] Speaker 1: So that's where I'm wondering where, like I say, having
[56:16] Speaker 1: the facilities don't matter as much as it used to.
[56:18] Speaker 1: What about the charming assistant or charming recruiter?
[56:21] Speaker 2: How much does that matter? Especially since you don't want
[56:23] Speaker 2: to do the recruiting.
[56:24] Speaker 3: That's right.
[56:25] Speaker 4: But see, I don't think the thing is, if you're
[56:26] Speaker 4: a DFW, you ain't got to do that much.
[56:27] Speaker 1: You don't have to do that, but you don't have
[56:29] Speaker 1: to go this far. I think he don't want to
[56:31] Speaker 1: get on planes.
[56:31] Speaker 4: I bet he don't want to go.
[56:32] Speaker 1: But he was already saying he can't go to no
[56:33] Speaker 1: high school, which I thought was a preposterous thing for
[56:35] Speaker 1: him to say.
[56:36] Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, man. Yeah.
[56:39] Speaker 4: He's the one guy I think that could overcome a
[56:41] Speaker 4: lot of that in Texas. Because you also know in Texas,
[56:43] Speaker 4: for people who don't, the Texas high school coaches association
[56:46] Speaker 4: is a big fucking deal. You got to lay prostrate,
[56:50] Speaker 4: lay prostrate in front of them people. So they will,
[56:52] Speaker 4: you know, they can do whatever they want. You know
[56:54] Speaker 4: what I mean? They, they, they control a lot of
[56:57] Speaker 4: people there. They have a lot of influence in that state.
[56:59] Speaker 4: And Dion is like, I think he's the one guy
[57:03] Speaker 4: that wouldn't need them.
[57:04] Speaker 3: Cause he's like, man, there's a lot of brothers, man.
[57:05] Speaker 4: He could get, you know, old coach samples at Duncanville.
[57:09] Speaker 4: He's got a line on a lot of other guys
[57:11] Speaker 4: that I don't think, I think, because Deion is the
[57:14] Speaker 4: way he is, that he doesn't need all the same
[57:16] Speaker 4: stuff that other coaches need, right? I don't think it
[57:18] Speaker 4: would mean that TCU would be a national championship contender,
[57:22] Speaker 4: but I think it means that it would be 9-3
[57:24] Speaker 4: every now and again, and people would be happy with
[57:26] Speaker 4: the program under him.
[57:28] Speaker 1: See, 9-3 at TCU requires you to be a better
[57:31] Speaker 1: coach than I think that he has demonstrated himself to be.
[57:34] Speaker 1: I mean, has he done anything to make you think
[57:36] Speaker 1: he can coach?
[57:38] Speaker 4: I mean, they got.
[57:39] Speaker 3: Better last year, right? Like, that defense got better.
[57:42] Speaker 1: Okay, but they got better.
[57:44] Speaker 4: Shador's not a great, I mean, as we see, he's
[57:46] Speaker 4: not a great talent.
[57:48] Speaker 1: I hear you, but, like, I mean, they just got
[57:51] Speaker 1: their doors blown off by Utah. Like, managing clock stuff
[57:54] Speaker 1: like that, Deion has not demonstrated himself to be great at.
[57:56] Speaker 1: I don't think that his teams have a clear personality
[57:59] Speaker 1: or a clear identity that speaks to a head coach.
[58:03] Speaker 4: That's right. I mean, I'd be willing to take the change.
[58:08] Speaker 4: If TCU, so if anybody at TCU is listening to me,
[58:11] Speaker 4: if you want to try to go higher.
[58:12] Speaker 1: Oh, I get it on the chance. I'm just not
[58:14] Speaker 1: sure that it would go any different than it did.
[58:16] Speaker 3: Man, yeah.
[58:17] Speaker 4: I mean, I think right now it's going okay, and
[58:19] Speaker 4: he's rebuilding after he lost a quarterback that a lot
[58:22] Speaker 4: of people thought should have been an early round draft
[58:25] Speaker 4: pick and a Heisman Trophy winner and some other guys,
[58:28] Speaker 4: and he's having to replace them, and that's what's going
[58:30] Speaker 4: to happen to Colorado. And Colorado's just a difficult job.
[58:33] Speaker 1: I mean, he's got a five-star quarterback, right?
[58:35] Speaker 3: Yeah, he got a five-star quarterback.
[58:37] Speaker 4: He got a five-star left tackle not so long ago.
[58:41] Speaker 4: So he's still able to get kids every now and again,
[58:44] Speaker 4: but it's just a tougher sell at Colorado, even as
[58:48] Speaker 4: beautiful as Colorado is, the tradition it has. I think
[58:52] Speaker 4: more for Deion, I'm like, why do you want to
[58:54] Speaker 4: do this more than Colorado?
[58:56] Speaker 3: Oh, no, no.
[58:57] Speaker 1: Colorado will keep him as long as he is willing
[59:01] Speaker 1: to stay. I, like you, I think the health stuff.
[59:05] Speaker 1: But I'm not in his body, so I want to
[59:07] Speaker 1: be careful, you know, making too many assumptions about what
[59:12] Speaker 1: he'll do because of his health. But I don't think
[59:14] Speaker 1: I would continue to do that job.
[59:16] Speaker 3: It seems really difficult.
[59:17] Speaker 4: I mean, you know, maybe he could do a thing
[59:19] Speaker 4: where he takes some time off and gets healthy or
[59:22] Speaker 4: whatever and he'll feel differently. I think college football is
[59:26] Speaker 4: better with Deion.
[59:29] Speaker 1: But it's only better with Deion if he'd do anything
[59:31] Speaker 1: to make us pay attention. They have been a wholly
[59:34] Speaker 1: irrelevant factor.
[59:35] Speaker 4: But I would still watch them when they're not good sometimes.
[59:38] Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I still think that Colorado Georgia
[59:40] Speaker 4: Tech season opener did pretty decent, even though nobody was like.
[59:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I have no idea what the numbers are now. Like,
[59:46] Speaker 1: I don't know how many people are still paying attention.
[59:47] Speaker 3: It clearly ain't what it is.
[59:48] Speaker 4: I know one thing.
[59:49] Speaker 3: Raekwon... And whoever else, they ain't showing up on the sidelines.
[59:53] Speaker 1: That's a great question.
[59:54] Speaker 2: That was actually what I was curious about.
[59:56] Speaker 4: Yeah, now that kind of stuff is over. But, you know,
[1:00:00] Speaker 4: they still have a little bit of cash in. There's
[1:00:01] Speaker 4: still some people rooting for them. So, you know, I mean, yeah, Colorado, man,
[1:00:05] Speaker 4: I'm sure they will hold on to them forever because
[1:00:07] Speaker 4: that ain't no easy job no more neither.
[1:00:10] Speaker 2: I mean, look, Bill McCartney, underrated, great all-time coach.
[1:00:14] Speaker 3: I mean, Gary Barnett.
[1:00:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, also, Big 8 recruiting standards.
[1:00:19] Speaker 4: That's a very– I mean, also, I mean, it's a
[1:00:22] Speaker 4: lot easier when you have to play against Oklahoma State.
[1:00:24] Speaker 2: Yes, that's what I'm saying.
[1:00:25] Speaker 3: Those Kansas State's Kansas.
[1:00:27] Speaker 2: And Big A, man, you had two games.
[1:00:29] Speaker 1: To play every year.
[1:00:30] Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
[1:00:30] Speaker 3: Yeah, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
[1:00:31] Speaker 2: Nebraska and Oklahoma. That's all you had to do. But
[1:00:34] Speaker 2: that is Joel Anderson.
[1:00:35] Speaker 1: Check him out on the Ranger Tailgate, also on the
[1:00:38] Speaker 1: Press Box, and wherever you are, if you listen very carefully,
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: you can hear Joel hating on me somehow, some way.
[1:00:44] Speaker 1: He's doing it.
[1:00:45] Speaker 4: I just want people to really take note of how
[1:00:47] Speaker 4: this conversation has evolved from where it started to where
[1:00:50] Speaker 4: it ended and who was doing the hating, you know,
[1:00:52] Speaker 4: that's what, that's what I would think about.
[1:00:54] Speaker 3: I was going to say something. You know what?
[1:00:56] Speaker 4: I actually, I was going to clown you for a
[1:00:57] Speaker 4: second because I thought you had like some mutton chops
[1:01:00] Speaker 4: on the side of your face. And for a second,
[1:01:02] Speaker 4: I thought I was like, that kind of looked like
[1:01:03] Speaker 4: a Benny the butcher type look you had going on.
[1:01:06] Speaker 3: But I, but then I was like, okay, you're.
[1:01:09] Speaker 1: I wanted to hate so bad that I thought I
[1:01:13] Speaker 1: saw something that wasn't even there.
[1:01:15] Speaker 2: That's what I just heard you say.
[1:01:17] Speaker 4: No, I mean, I just, I was like, oh, that
[1:01:20] Speaker 4: kind of, anyway. It's just for a second. You don't
[1:01:23] Speaker 4: look like Benny the Butcher.
[1:01:28] Speaker 3: You don't let me go, or.
