Bomani Jones is joined by The Ringer's Joel Anderson to break down Victor Wembanyama’s monster playoff performance and why it felt like one of those rare sports moments where you realize you’re watching the future. Bo and Joel compare Wemby’s arrival to LeBron, Allen Iverson, Randy Moss, Michael Vick, Usain Bolt and Shaq, then ask what the Thunder can possibly do next. Later, Bomani and Joel discuss the NAACP urging Black athletes and fans to withhold support from public universities in states attacking Black voting representation, and whether it’s fair to ask young athletes to carry that kind of burden. Plus, they react to Stephen A. Smith’s response to Jaylen Brown & the limits of athlete-run media. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:09] Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a Wave
[0:12] Speaker 2: original presented by FanDuel Predicts. My name is Bomani Jones.
[0:16] Speaker 2: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for

[0:22] Speaker 2: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
[0:24] Speaker 2: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. It is
[0:27] Speaker 2: that time of week where we have a.
[0:30] Speaker 1: Guest join us on the show. You know what I'm saying?
[0:34] Speaker 2: A guest who has a framed jersey behind him just
[0:38] Speaker 2: because the dude shares his last name.
[0:40] Speaker 1: Check him out on Ring of Tale.
[0:41] Speaker 2: It's still such a ridiculous thing to do.
[0:43] Speaker 1: Check him out on Ring of Tale, Kate. Joel Anderson,
[0:45] Speaker 1: what's going on?
[0:46] Speaker 3: Do you think I need to get the Will Anderson
[0:48] Speaker 3: jersey then? Because that is a little bit more Houston.
[0:50] Speaker 2: No, I think you like I went to high school
[0:52] Speaker 2: with a dude named Ray Cunningham. He was a white dude,
[0:54] Speaker 2: but he had in green and in white the Randall
[0:57] Speaker 2: Cunningham jerseys with R.Cunningham on it.
[1:00] Speaker 1: And it's like.
[1:01] Speaker 3: I respect it.
[1:02] Speaker 2: This ain't the flex you think it is.
[1:03] Speaker 3: A white man up in Waller wearing a Cunningham jersey?
[1:07] Speaker 1: By the way, aren't you going to do your little thing?
[1:10] Speaker 3: What's my little thing? You know, where you go like that.
[1:14] Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? I saved that for Wednesday.
[1:17] Speaker 3: When we record our show, the ring of tailgate You know,
[1:21] Speaker 3: I saved the race.
[1:21] Speaker 1: But we can do it here.
[1:22] Speaker 2: If you do it, are you going to do it
[1:24] Speaker 2: with me?
[1:25] Speaker 1: Of course not. But it's Wednesday while people are watching
[1:27] Speaker 1: it now.
[1:28] Speaker 3: Come on, man. Come on, just do it.
[1:31] Speaker 4: Nah, nah.
[1:31] Speaker 2: That's kind of like what Pablo tried to get me
[1:32] Speaker 2: to do some Pokemon Dragon Ball Z shit one time.
[1:35] Speaker 3: That's not the same thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. First of all,
[1:39] Speaker 3: I don't even know. I've never seen Dragon Ball Z
[1:41] Speaker 3: or any of that shit.
[1:42] Speaker 1: It's not terribly different. It's not terribly different. But let
[1:44] Speaker 1: me ask you this. I want to ask you this.
[1:46] Speaker 2: On the heels of what Victor Wimbanyama did Monday night, right?
[1:51] Speaker 2: Can you think of a time that you knew that
[1:54] Speaker 2: you were watching the future?
[1:57] Speaker 3: So, I mean, I feel like the obvious answer is
[2:00] Speaker 3: Braun here, right? Well, I was like, oh, this is
[2:03] Speaker 3: going to be this guy's league for the rest of time.
[2:07] Speaker 3: So what was the game where he scored.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Like 29 or 30 points? Against the Pistons, yeah.
[2:10] Speaker 3: But I was actually thinking, I wanted to go a
[2:12] Speaker 3: little bit deeper than that. And you know what I
[2:14] Speaker 3: was thinking about? Allen Iverson. When I saw Allen Iverson
[2:18] Speaker 3: play Not just at Georgetown, but when he crossed up MJ.
[2:23] Speaker 1: He joined and put him on the ground.
[2:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, put him on the ground. And I was like, man,
[2:27] Speaker 3: that was really influential. People just don't remember. At the
[2:32] Speaker 3: time when Allen Iverson broke into the NBA, dudes didn't
[2:35] Speaker 3: have tattoos like that then. Dennis Rodman was sort of
[2:37] Speaker 3: like the irregular.
[2:39] Speaker 1: But that was different.
[2:41] Speaker 3: His was different. Yeah.
[2:42] Speaker 2: They didn't have the same kind of tattoo. It was
[2:44] Speaker 2: a different sort of appeal. It's like me and Goff
[2:45] Speaker 2: talked about, right? That Dennis Rodman was doing white boy stuff.
[2:49] Speaker 1: Yes. And was valued. Allen Iverson had what they call
[2:53] Speaker 1: jailhouse tattoos.
[2:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Like he came along. Again, I felt
[2:57] Speaker 3: like it's for people that grew up in our age.
[3:01] Speaker 3: Tupac and Allen Iverson convinced a lot of people to
[3:04] Speaker 3: get a lot of tattoos. And that just was something
[3:06] Speaker 3: that we did not do a lot of at the time.
[3:08] Speaker 3: And then the way he hooped, like I felt like
[3:10] Speaker 3: there were a lot of guys, you know, Steve Francis
[3:13] Speaker 3: and so on and so on. Guys that like were,
[3:16] Speaker 3: you know, short shooting guards. They weren't particularly efficient, but
[3:21] Speaker 3: they could dribble their ass off. They were quick as hell.
[3:24] Speaker 3: And they could get around. And they didn't necessarily have
[3:26] Speaker 3: to play the boring point guard way of playing ball.
[3:29] Speaker 3: It was just a different way of playing ball. So
[3:30] Speaker 3: that's what I thought of. But it wasn't like what
[3:35] Speaker 3: Wimby is, which is like, oh, no, this guy's actually
[3:37] Speaker 3: going to own basketball for the next generation.
[3:40] Speaker 2: So I got two thoughts on that. My thought was
[3:42] Speaker 2: a little different, and I'm curious. I think you'll still
[3:45] Speaker 2: have an answer for it. I'm curious what your thing is.
[3:47] Speaker 2: But first, the real future with Iverson was not simply that.
[3:50] Speaker 1: Crossover he put on Mike.
[3:52] Speaker 2: It was the post-game comments that I think were largely misinterpreted,
[3:57] Speaker 2: but still where he was like, I ain't got to
[3:58] Speaker 2: respect nobody.
[4:00] Speaker 1: That was the future, right?
[4:02] Speaker 2: Like that was, this was a much different person than
[4:04] Speaker 2: Michael Jordan is what that was.
[4:07] Speaker 1: But I mean the future in this sense. So I'll
[4:09] Speaker 1: give you an example.
[4:11] Speaker 2: LeBron, like LeBron in 07 was, yes, the league is
[4:15] Speaker 2: going to belong to this person, right?
[4:18] Speaker 1: Randy Moss, Monday night football against the Packers. There has
[4:24] Speaker 1: been a full-on evolution of the form of what we're
[4:28] Speaker 1: talking about. You know what I mean? Another example.
[4:31] Speaker 2: Whatever was the first time you saw Usain Bolt, for me,
[4:34] Speaker 2: it was the gold medal final in 08.
[4:36] Speaker 3: I was just about to say Usain Bolt.
[4:38] Speaker 1: Right, so I don't.
[4:40] Speaker 2: Mean like this is the future of what basketball is
[4:42] Speaker 2: going to be or this guy is the best.
[4:44] Speaker 1: I mean, it looks like this motherfucker came from the future.
[4:49] Speaker 3: Oh, well, you know what?
[4:50] Speaker 2: Forget about from space. It looked like he came from
[4:53] Speaker 2: another time.
[4:54] Speaker 3: Oh, bro, so I think the Usain Bolt is a
[4:58] Speaker 3: great one because also it like really shifted the idea
[5:00] Speaker 3: of what a sprinter could look like because Usain Bolt's
[5:03] Speaker 3: frame is, was perfect for like 200, 400. And I
[5:07] Speaker 3: think that they initially, when he started running track, they
[5:09] Speaker 3: wanted him to be more of a 400 guy.
[5:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, the plan was to move him up to four,
[5:13] Speaker 1: not down to one.
[5:14] Speaker 3: Right. And then they're just like, oh no, he actually
[5:16] Speaker 3: can do it this way. But you know another guy
[5:18] Speaker 3: that I think doesn't get enough credit for like totally
[5:22] Speaker 3: shifting the paradigm of a sport and they're just like,
[5:24] Speaker 3: oh no, you can't. This Evander Holyfield shit's not going
[5:26] Speaker 3: to work. This Mike Tyson shit's not going to work.
[5:28] Speaker 3: Lennox Lewis. like the big, like the six foot four,
[5:33] Speaker 3: six foot five heavyweight 250, like super heavyweight dudes that
[5:38] Speaker 3: just like, oh, it's like, oh, like you're not going
[5:39] Speaker 3: to be able to be a cruiserweight and fight at
[5:41] Speaker 3: the heavyweight level anymore. Like you can't be five, like
[5:44] Speaker 3: Burt Cooper. I don't know if people are like the
[5:47] Speaker 3: smoking Joe Frazier, like a five, 11, six foot heavyweight.
[5:50] Speaker 3: And I was like, oh no, when Lennox Lewis put
[5:53] Speaker 3: Mike Tyson on his back, I was like, oh, Mike
[5:57] Speaker 3: can't fuck with him. He can't get inside. He doesn't
[5:59] Speaker 3: have enough power. It's just not it. But anyway, I
[6:01] Speaker 3: don't know. Maybe that's not enough. Well, no, no.
[6:03] Speaker 1: I think there's something to that, right? I'll give you
[6:06] Speaker 1: another example.
[6:07] Speaker 3: Okay.
[6:08] Speaker 1: A lot of us remember this.
[6:09] Speaker 2: You got to remember, not every football game, even as
[6:11] Speaker 2: recently as 20-something years ago, was readily available on TV, right?
[6:16] Speaker 1: You couldn't have so much cable.
[6:18] Speaker 2: And the Sugar Bowl in January of 2000, I would
[6:23] Speaker 2: say for the vast majority of America... was the first
[6:26] Speaker 2: time they had watched Michael Vick play. They had heard
[6:29] Speaker 2: about Michael Vick, but we had not seen him play.
[6:33] Speaker 2: That dude made two cats tear their ACLs.
[6:38] Speaker 1: Hold on. Against the fastest team on earth.
[6:40] Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing. Nobody had ever seen anybody be
[6:44] Speaker 3: faster than Florida State before. Not even Miami. When Miami
[6:48] Speaker 3: and Florida State were rolling, those were the consensus two
[6:51] Speaker 3: fastest teams in the country. And Michael Vick was the
[6:54] Speaker 3: only dude where I was like, oh, man, they're having
[6:56] Speaker 3: trouble catching up to this guy. Like that. And so, yeah,
[6:59] Speaker 3: that was also kind of don't you. Do you feel
[7:02] Speaker 3: like Vince Young kind of was a part of that
[7:04] Speaker 3: as well, too?
[7:05] Speaker 1: Dude, I always felt the thing with Vince.
[7:07] Speaker 2: It felt like Vince started going and everybody started stopping.
[7:10] Speaker 1: Right.
[7:11] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[7:11] Speaker 1: Like I as impressive as I found Vince. I mean,
[7:14] Speaker 1: there he is right there on the wall here.
[7:17] Speaker 2: But I did not view him as it is so
[7:20] Speaker 2: clear he is the best athlete out here. I felt
[7:24] Speaker 2: more like it is very clear he is the best
[7:26] Speaker 2: player out here, right? Like it was, to me, it
[7:29] Speaker 2: was all, like he looked to me like a guy
[7:31] Speaker 2: where it's like the testing isn't going to explain to
[7:33] Speaker 2: you what's going on here, which is not the Michael
[7:36] Speaker 2: Vick case.
[7:36] Speaker 1: The testing was going to be very clear what was
[7:39] Speaker 1: going on.
[7:39] Speaker 2: And with Victor, it was just like, but I guess
[7:42] Speaker 2: my larger point of where I bring it up is just,
[7:44] Speaker 2: there's something special about that moment where you watch something
[7:48] Speaker 2: and you're just like, like that game where Moss had
[7:50] Speaker 2: against the Vikings on Monday night football.
[7:52] Speaker 3: Was it like, was it, or is it the Cowboys? Right.
[7:54] Speaker 3: Was it three? No, no.
[7:55] Speaker 1: Cowboys is on Thanksgiving.
[7:57] Speaker 3: Okay.
[7:57] Speaker 2: That was the, like he did it to, he did
[7:59] Speaker 2: it all year long. There were these moments, but it
[8:01] Speaker 2: was like the third or fourth game of the year.
[8:04] Speaker 2: They played a night game at Lambeau field. And that
[8:08] Speaker 2: was the, Oh, this is a thing.
[8:11] Speaker 3: Right yep yep yep that's right that's right it's like
[8:13] Speaker 3: oh like this is actually going to translate these guys
[8:15] Speaker 3: have never seen anybody like this before it looked like
[8:18] Speaker 3: it did at marshall yeah right it was like i
[8:21] Speaker 3: mean again the cowboys game was crazy because you see
[8:24] Speaker 3: the stat line i think it was like three receptions
[8:25] Speaker 3: for 168 yards and like three touchdowns yes and it
[8:29] Speaker 3: was like nobody's supposed to come into the nfl and
[8:31] Speaker 3: do that like that and like chris carter was he's
[8:35] Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame NFL receiver. Like he was great.
[8:38] Speaker 3: Like my entire life. All he does is catch touchdowns.
[8:41] Speaker 3: That was the Chris Carter thing. And as soon as
[8:43] Speaker 3: Randy Moss got there, it was like, Oh no, that's, that's, that's,
[8:46] Speaker 3: that's receiver one right there.
[8:48] Speaker 1: You know, I saw Adam Schefter. He made the comp.
[8:51] Speaker 1: I was thinking of like, what was it like watching
[8:53] Speaker 1: victory women?
[8:53] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, he was like the closest he could
[8:55] Speaker 2: think of was Ricky or Randy Moss. and what they
[8:57] Speaker 2: have in common is, just chuck it up there, dog.
[9:01] Speaker 2: The Spurs is like when the first video games came
[9:06] Speaker 2: out with the alley-oop and all you did was throw alley-oops.
[9:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. You see if you agree with me on this.
[9:13] Speaker 3: It was the first time maybe since Shaq against Dikembe
[9:19] Speaker 3: Mutombo in the 2001 finals. I was like, oh, I
[9:21] Speaker 3: feel sorry for everybody else out here. You know what
[9:24] Speaker 3: I'm saying? It's like, it must be so frustrating because
[9:26] Speaker 3: he barely even has to jump. It was just like,
[9:29] Speaker 3: it was like, he took over the game. Like sometimes,
[9:32] Speaker 3: you know, eighth grader would come down and nobody else
[9:35] Speaker 3: out there to play. And they play with the sixth
[9:36] Speaker 3: and seventh graders. And it was like, Oh no, this
[9:38] Speaker 3: guy is just bigger and better than everybody. And there's
[9:41] Speaker 3: nothing they can do about it, man.
[9:42] Speaker 1: Yes.
[9:43] Speaker 3: That was, that was shocking to me because again, it's
[9:46] Speaker 3: not like Oklahoma state played bad and they have a
[9:49] Speaker 3: knack for making everybody look bad. And like, make every
[9:52] Speaker 3: shot look fresh, very difficult, rush people, they have to
[9:56] Speaker 3: guard the handle in a certain way, and none of
[9:58] Speaker 3: that mattered. i was i think i i realized when
[10:02] Speaker 3: the spurs were up by like eight like in the
[10:04] Speaker 3: fourth quarter i was like oh shit they might actually
[10:06] Speaker 3: do this yeah and that's the thing that's like that's
[10:09] Speaker 3: what should be scary to the thunder it's like oh
[10:11] Speaker 3: like when being y'all came out to dominate y'all i'm
[10:14] Speaker 3: sure that like they spent their whole game plan like
[10:16] Speaker 3: how are we gonna slow him down how are we
[10:18] Speaker 3: gonna make it difficult for him And he goes out
[10:20] Speaker 3: there and puts up, what, 41-24 on them there?
[10:22] Speaker 1: Yes.
[10:23] Speaker 2: Hey, that boy Ryan. And only had three blocks because
[10:26] Speaker 2: they wasn't allowing it to happen.
[10:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
[10:28] Speaker 2: That boy Ryan made a very good point. He was like,
[10:30] Speaker 2: the price of that Giannis brick just went through the roof.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Because if you try to keep up, you got to
[10:34] Speaker 2: do something.
[10:35] Speaker 3: Man, I mean.
[10:37] Speaker 1: You got to do something.
[10:38] Speaker 3: I mean, you don't think this means it's over for
[10:40] Speaker 3: the Thunder yet, though, right? Like, you still think that
[10:43] Speaker 3: they have a shot to win this series?
[10:44] Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. Yes. But they better win the next game. Yeah.
[10:51] Speaker 1: And they lose game two. It's over.
[10:54] Speaker 3: I can't.
[10:54] Speaker 1: I can't.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Look, there was a point during the game. My man
[10:58] Speaker 2: Clarence sent me this stat. There was a point during
[11:01] Speaker 2: the game where with Victor on the floor, the Thunder
[11:07] Speaker 2: was shooting 10 for 50. Oh, man.
[11:08] Speaker 1: 10 for 50.
[11:10] Speaker 3: Man.
[11:10] Speaker 4: 20% in an NBA game.
[11:23] Speaker 3: And there's just no way you can get around that.
[11:25] Speaker 3: That's the thing. Offense comes and goes. You can figure
[11:29] Speaker 3: out a way to slow Wimpy. You can make him
[11:32] Speaker 3: come up off the ball earlier, whatever. But you're going
[11:35] Speaker 3: to always have to deal with him on that end
[11:37] Speaker 3: of the floor. And if he is engaged and he
[11:40] Speaker 3: is healthy, ain't really shit you can do about it. No, no, no.
[11:44] Speaker 1: And they got other dudes that's good too.
[11:46] Speaker 3: Yeah. That's the thing. that actually kind of pisses me off, man. Like, man,
[11:51] Speaker 3: as a Rockets fan, man, we should have had Stephon Castile, man.
[11:56] Speaker 1: Y'all took Reed, right?
[11:57] Speaker 3: We took Reed, man. We took Reed. We could have
[11:59] Speaker 3: had Stephon. Like, that's the thing. You just can't let
[12:02] Speaker 3: your rival get that guy, right?
[12:04] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[12:05] Speaker 3: You can't let the team in your division. Like, you
[12:06] Speaker 3: already missed on Wimby, which I think is some bullshit
[12:09] Speaker 3: because that year, the year that Wimby came out into
[12:12] Speaker 3: the draft, they had the same draft odds as the
[12:14] Speaker 3: Spurs and the, what was it? Was it the Pistons too?
[12:18] Speaker 3: I think it was the Pistons.
[12:19] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[12:20] Speaker 3: They had the same draft odds as the Spurs and
[12:22] Speaker 3: the Pistons. And we ended up with Armin Thompson, a
[12:25] Speaker 3: great player. Like, I love having Armin Thompson. That's amazing.
[12:29] Speaker 3: He might be the second best player in that draft.
[12:31] Speaker 3: But get the fuck out of here, bro. You know
[12:35] Speaker 3: what I'm saying? As soon as they got Wimby Yama,
[12:39] Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man. Like, that's, it's not.
[12:43] Speaker 1: The last thing I'll say on this. watching his teammates.
[12:47] Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
[12:48] Speaker 2: Just be like, I can't believe we get to do this.
[12:51] Speaker 3: Can you believe De'Aaron Fox is like, man, I used
[12:53] Speaker 3: to have to My big man was DeMontis Sabonis, man. Yeah, yeah.
[12:58] Speaker 2: Like, I think Fox played enough NBA basketball in other
[13:02] Speaker 2: places that he fully appreciates what it is. Like, just
[13:08] Speaker 2: the look on his face on the sideline when Victor
[13:11] Speaker 2: came over and stood up in front of them motherfuckers
[13:13] Speaker 2: like Captain Morgan, and they was like, yeah, dog!
[13:17] Speaker 3: Get into it. Get into it, man. I, um... Yeah, man, I...
[13:22] Speaker 3: You know, I think the Thunder still have a chance.
[13:25] Speaker 3: I still thought, and I watched your little clip. You
[13:29] Speaker 3: recorded late last night. No wonder you weren't responding to
[13:31] Speaker 3: texts last night.
[13:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[13:33] Speaker 3: You recorded as soon as the game was over, huh?
[13:35] Speaker 1: Oh, no, no. We recorded that this morning.
[13:37] Speaker 2: But no, I was trying so hard to stay awake,
[13:40] Speaker 2: and I had so many people texting me.
[13:42] Speaker 1: It was just, it was really tough. You had to
[13:44] Speaker 1: get up. And I keep all group chats on silent
[13:48] Speaker 1: because they can get unwieldy.
[13:49] Speaker 3: I got you, got you, got you, got you.
[13:50] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? So you got it. Oh,
[13:51] Speaker 1: my God. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[13:52] Speaker 2: Like this was this this this was this was I
[13:56] Speaker 2: don't remember the last time that everybody got to join
[13:58] Speaker 2: in this together.
[13:58] Speaker 1: Right.
[13:59] Speaker 2: Like this was we were all on the same team
[14:01] Speaker 2: of I can't believe this.
[14:03] Speaker 3: Just high quality ball, which is I mean, I'm so
[14:06] Speaker 3: glad because I was staying up late watching that terrible
[14:10] Speaker 3: that that had to have been one of the worst
[14:13] Speaker 3: round twos in recent NBA history.
[14:15] Speaker 4: Right.
[14:17] Speaker 2: Yes.
[14:17] Speaker 3: Like, I mean, there was barely any competitive series. And
[14:20] Speaker 3: the one series that we didn't care if it went
[14:22] Speaker 3: seven games went seven games. Correct. You know? And so
[14:25] Speaker 3: it was like, oh, man, that was terrible. But now
[14:27] Speaker 3: we finally got to the series. I think everybody thinks
[14:31] Speaker 3: this is going to be the finals. I think that's
[14:32] Speaker 3: maybe playing the Knicks a little bit short. But, yeah,
[14:35] Speaker 3: I mean, like, I'm just glad that that game was everything.
[14:38] Speaker 3: That happened. I'm trying to think of the last time
[14:40] Speaker 3: I enjoyed an NBA game that much, too.
[14:43] Speaker 1: It was a moment. It's one that we'll talk about
[14:44] Speaker 1: for a very long time.
[14:46] Speaker 2: This is, to me, the most memorable game since 2016
[14:50] Speaker 2: Game 7 NBA Finals. Wow.
[14:53] Speaker 3: Wow. Is that right?
[14:55] Speaker 1: I mean, pull one for me.
[14:57] Speaker 3: Man, I was trying to think. Was there anything from
[14:59] Speaker 3: the Steph run in 2022? Maybe the Giannis... Game six
[15:03] Speaker 3: versus the Suns.
[15:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, but the totality of this game.
[15:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. The build-up, the rivalry, these teams actually
[15:12] Speaker 3: hate each other.
[15:12] Speaker 1: It was a lot. And it lived up to expectations.
[15:15] Speaker 1: It did. I tell you this, though. Ryan sent a text.
[15:18] Speaker 1: He's right.
[15:19] Speaker 2: He is single-handedly killing the French coward stereotypes.
[15:22] Speaker 1: Right? Because they go.
[15:23] Speaker 2: The thing we need to talk about later is they
[15:25] Speaker 2: going to win the 2028 Olympics at our crib.
[15:27] Speaker 1: And he going to be out here talking shit. He
[15:29] Speaker 1: might even wipe his ass with the flag.
[15:30] Speaker 3: Damn.
[15:32] Speaker 2: I mean, don't forget he tasted blood in Paris in 24.
[15:36] Speaker 2: Like that's like, we need to be, we need to
[15:39] Speaker 2: be afraid of that.
[15:39] Speaker 1: Number one.
[15:40] Speaker 2: And number two is he, he may be killing the
[15:43] Speaker 2: French coward stereotypes, but we got to wait to see
[15:46] Speaker 2: what he does to the spur stereotypes.
[15:49] Speaker 1: Try to highlight somebody girl.
[15:52] Speaker 3: Oh, man. Why are you being that way, man?
[15:56] Speaker 1: What do you mean?
[15:56] Speaker 3: Come on, man. You know what it is?
[15:59] Speaker 2: I'm surprised the Spurs went and got another French dude.
[16:03] Speaker 2: But I guess this one was too good to pass up.
[16:05] Speaker 2: They was like, you remember the end of Juvenile on Fire?
[16:08] Speaker 3: Yes.
[16:10] Speaker 1: That's what they was saying about Victor.
[16:11] Speaker 3: Come on, man. I mean, because, wait, I don't know
[16:15] Speaker 3: the whole story about that thing, too. This is TP
[16:19] Speaker 3: and BB, right?
[16:20] Speaker 1: Yes.
[16:21] Speaker 3: Okay.
[16:21] Speaker 2: Okay. Yes, which sounds like you're talking about toilet paper
[16:24] Speaker 2: and boo-boo, but you're not.
[16:25] Speaker 3: I'm not talking about toilet paper and boo-boo, no. Because
[16:28] Speaker 3: I'm trying to give us the plausible deniability here.
[16:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll put it to you like this. I just
[16:33] Speaker 1: ran the search on Google, and it came up in
[16:35] Speaker 1: the AI overview.
[16:36] Speaker 3: Man, that's tough, man. I mean, that's how the world is.
[16:40] Speaker 3: But look, man.
[16:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, man, I got a colleague that's going to
[16:42] Speaker 1: be living like that forever.
[16:44] Speaker 3: A colleague like that?
[16:47] Speaker 1: Boy, you read the news.
[16:48] Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Oh, man.
[16:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, bro. That's a tough one. That's a tough one.
[16:54] Speaker 3: That's a tough one.
[16:55] Speaker 1: Nowhere to go.
[16:55] Speaker 3: Nowhere to go. I got to throw that. You got
[16:58] Speaker 3: to take that hot potato back.
[17:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[17:00] Speaker 3: Wimpy don't really seem like he into the... I don't
[17:03] Speaker 3: know how to explain it.
[17:04] Speaker 2: Hey, hey, hey.
[17:05] Speaker 1: Never know, partner.
[17:05] Speaker 2: Never know.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Never know. But again, it's going to be like, hey, man,
[17:09] Speaker 1: you know, got to pay tribute. Tribute to the king.
[17:12] Speaker 1: Tribute to the king. Can't have them all. I want
[17:15] Speaker 1: to run something by you.
[17:15] Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen this, but the NAACP,
[17:19] Speaker 2: put out a statement, I believe, today, and they are
[17:22] Speaker 2: urging Black athletes and fans to, quote, withhold athletic and
[17:25] Speaker 2: financial support for public universities and states that have, quote,
[17:29] Speaker 2: moved to limit, weaken, or erase Black voting representation. That's
[17:32] Speaker 2: Philip Lewis who sent the tweet and did that encapsulation. Coincidentally,
[17:36] Speaker 2: Joel had come on here because I had said on
[17:38] Speaker 2: Stephen Godfrey's I mean, it's dangerous to talk like this,
[17:41] Speaker 2: which white homies, but the argument against the boycotting of
[17:45] Speaker 2: these programs in the face of the political situation.
[17:48] Speaker 1: I know you disagree. I'm curious your angle. I don't.
[17:54] Speaker 3: But first of all, this is something I've only been
[17:55] Speaker 3: calling for for like the last decade, by the way.
[17:57] Speaker 1: If I say this is very true.
[17:59] Speaker 3: Yeah. Like I've been talking about this since forever. It
[18:01] Speaker 3: didn't just start with the Voting Rights Act. The thing is,
[18:04] Speaker 3: is I get what Stephen is saying. And I respect Stephen, man,
[18:07] Speaker 3: on this because he talked first, he talked about race
[18:09] Speaker 3: like a for a white boy to talk about race
[18:12] Speaker 3: in which the way he does like i just respect
[18:14] Speaker 3: it you know what i'm saying like he's not afraid
[18:16] Speaker 3: and he's very agile with it but the thing that
[18:18] Speaker 3: i think about this is that first of all it
[18:23] Speaker 3: is a community like if you live as a part
[18:25] Speaker 3: of a community bro like sometimes people do have to
[18:27] Speaker 3: some people are going to ask you to do things
[18:29] Speaker 3: that may be difficult right or they may seem difficult
[18:32] Speaker 3: right it's like hey look man just don't go you
[18:35] Speaker 3: you just can't go to University of Georgia. Like that's
[18:37] Speaker 3: all we're saying. It doesn't mean that USC is not
[18:39] Speaker 3: available to you. It doesn't mean that Michigan and Ohio
[18:41] Speaker 3: State are not available to you. We're just asking you
[18:43] Speaker 3: not to go here. And I don't think that's that
[18:45] Speaker 3: much of an ask. And really you're not asking it
[18:48] Speaker 3: of players. You're asking it of their parents or the
[18:50] Speaker 3: people that, I guess, handlers for lack of a better term.
[18:54] Speaker 3: The second part of this is that I don't think
[18:56] Speaker 3: it's going to require hundreds and hundreds of kids to
[18:59] Speaker 3: do it. I think it only takes about a handful
[19:01] Speaker 3: of kids to put a hurt on somebody and they
[19:03] Speaker 3: can make a point. And it may not, look, the
[19:06] Speaker 3: Voting Rights Act is dead for, in all intents and purposes,
[19:10] Speaker 3: for the rest of our life. Like, I don't think
[19:11] Speaker 3: we're going to see it restored before, you know, we're
[19:14] Speaker 3: out of here. But the ball has to start rolling now, right? Like,
[19:18] Speaker 3: this is like the movement, it's just like the Civil
[19:22] Speaker 3: Rights Act did not start in the, the Civil Rights
[19:25] Speaker 3: Movement didn't start in the 1960s. It started as black
[19:27] Speaker 3: folks were losing their rights in the middle of the
[19:29] Speaker 3: redemption or whatever, right? And so this is the same thing, bro. Like,
[19:32] Speaker 3: I just think that like it's just part.
[19:33] Speaker 4: Of a movement.
[19:34] Speaker 3: You're not asking 20 kids, 50 kids or just asking
[19:39] Speaker 3: a handful of the most desired kids in this country
[19:43] Speaker 3: to say, you know what? I don't want to go
[19:45] Speaker 3: down there because I don't think that state respects my
[19:48] Speaker 3: people or its rights. And I don't want to go
[19:51] Speaker 3: someplace where when I'm done playing football, if I move
[19:54] Speaker 3: back there, I'm not sure if my voter count, I'm
[19:57] Speaker 3: not sure if it'll be legal to discriminate me to
[19:59] Speaker 3: get a job or my family to get a job.
[20:03] Speaker 3: I want my people to be treated fairly. And so
[20:05] Speaker 3: I'm going to go to a state where at least
[20:07] Speaker 3: for now, it's not explicitly written into law. You're not
[20:12] Speaker 3: seeing California trying to rip up, well, they are trying
[20:16] Speaker 3: to rip up their districts, but for favors of the
[20:19] Speaker 3: Democratic Party. So I just, I don't know, man. I
[20:22] Speaker 3: don't think it would have to hurt that much to
[20:24] Speaker 3: do that. And I think it's fair to ask those
[20:26] Speaker 3: kids to do it. They're 18 years old. It's okay.
[20:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, my issue is exactly what you just said right there.
[20:32] Speaker 2: I don't like when people tell other people what they
[20:34] Speaker 2: should do. When the standpoint, when it is not a-
[20:37] Speaker 2: We've always done that.
[20:38] Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on. I don't I didn't say what
[20:40] Speaker 1: we always did. I said what I don't like.
[20:42] Speaker 3: OK.
[20:42] Speaker 2: Right.
[20:43] Speaker 1: If it's a here's what we bought to do.
[20:47] Speaker 2: I am inclined to listen a little bit more than
[20:50] Speaker 2: here is what you going to do. Largely in what
[20:54] Speaker 2: I feel it comes from a segment of older people
[20:58] Speaker 2: who have not demonstrated to me their willingness to do
[21:01] Speaker 2: something similar. I'm kind of like, I don't know. My
[21:07] Speaker 2: other thing is the number two, and it's the big one. So,
[21:09] Speaker 2: for example, you decide you're not going to go play
[21:12] Speaker 2: for those schools. Instead, I will go to a state
[21:15] Speaker 2: that respects my people, Oregon.
[21:19] Speaker 1: Well, you know, in fact, they do.
[21:23] Speaker 2: Not respect you in this way. The places that you go...
[21:29] Speaker 2: I have questions about whether or not they actually have
[21:32] Speaker 2: any more respect for you than where, where it is
[21:35] Speaker 2: that you're ultimately going to wind up.
[21:37] Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
[21:38] Speaker 2: So like, it's not as if for me, it's not
[21:40] Speaker 2: even like, I don't get why you would decide you're
[21:42] Speaker 2: not going to do that. And if you decide you're
[21:44] Speaker 2: not going to do that, that's cool. And I'd go
[21:46] Speaker 2: with it. I just don't, I, I have issues with
[21:50] Speaker 2: people whose first move on what to do in a
[21:52] Speaker 2: moment like this is to tell somebody else the changes
[21:55] Speaker 2: that they should make.
[21:56] Speaker 1: While they just going to watch and cheer them all.
[21:58] Speaker 1: That's my thing.
[21:59] Speaker 2: Now, what I find about this particular issue that I
[22:01] Speaker 2: think is more interesting, what the NAACP is saying, they're like, yeah,
[22:04] Speaker 2: and also, let's not watch this stuff. Because the truth is,
[22:08] Speaker 2: you and I and doing our jobs could be like,
[22:10] Speaker 2: you know what? We're not going to talk about SEC football.
[22:13] Speaker 2: We're not going to give it any oxygen. But we're
[22:15] Speaker 2: not going to do that. We're going to tell these
[22:16] Speaker 2: boys to not go there, and then we're going to
[22:18] Speaker 2: still go over there and talk about it, because we
[22:20] Speaker 2: don't want to fuck up our money.
[22:21] Speaker 1: You see what I mean?
[22:22] Speaker 2: That's where I'm like, I don't feel comfortable with the
[22:28] Speaker 2: calls coming if they're not coming in a particular way
[22:31] Speaker 2: or from a particular set of people.
[22:33] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I just, I don't find that to
[22:35] Speaker 3: be analogous because I feel, you know, it's not like we're,
[22:40] Speaker 3: this is not a conversation that anybody at the SEC
[22:43] Speaker 3: is excited for us to have right now. They don't
[22:45] Speaker 3: want us to draw attention to that. They would prefer
[22:47] Speaker 3: that this be a thing that goes away. This is
[22:49] Speaker 3: us playing our part in the fight. for expanding voting
[22:52] Speaker 3: rights in that state again. And again, look, when I
[22:55] Speaker 3: was a kid, when you were a kid, they were regularly,
[22:58] Speaker 3: and I remember when I went up to Missouri in
[23:00] Speaker 3: 2015 when those kids boycotted that school, and I talked
[23:04] Speaker 3: to some old black DJs and journalists that were like,
[23:06] Speaker 3: we were always telling kids, man, don't take your ass
[23:09] Speaker 3: up to the Missouri. They don't respect you. Even go
[23:12] Speaker 3: to Illinois.
[23:12] Speaker 4: Okay.
[23:14] Speaker 3: But do not go to Mizzou. That has always been
[23:16] Speaker 3: a part of black culture. The reason that the University
[23:19] Speaker 3: of Texas and Ole Miss, part of the reason that
[23:21] Speaker 3: they never tapped in and lived up to the potential
[23:27] Speaker 3: of the program.
[23:27] Speaker 1: It wasn't the place to go.
[23:29] Speaker 3: It wasn't the place to go. And part of that
[23:31] Speaker 3: was people being like, man, you don't take your ass
[23:33] Speaker 3: up there to Austin, they're not going to treat you right.
[23:34] Speaker 3: Don't go up there to Oxford. You don't let the
[23:36] Speaker 3: folks wave that flag in your face.
[23:38] Speaker 1: But that's not the same thing as what we're talking about.
[23:41] Speaker 3: Right? Right.
[23:42] Speaker 1: What we're talking.
[23:43] Speaker 2: About right now is do not go to that school
[23:48] Speaker 2: because of the larger.
[23:50] Speaker 1: Political climate, right?
[23:53] Speaker 2: The argument for not going to Texas or going to
[23:56] Speaker 2: Ole Miss was they're going to treat you bad while
[23:59] Speaker 2: you're there, which is not the same thing as what
[24:03] Speaker 2: we're talking about. We're talking about, in this discussion, we
[24:07] Speaker 2: are talking about in response to something political and not
[24:11] Speaker 2: necessarily directly tied to the school.
[24:13] Speaker 1: We are asking you to do X, Y, and Z.
[24:16] Speaker 1: And I think that's a different discussion for me, right?
[24:20] Speaker 2: Like, I know enough stories as to why, nah, for
[24:24] Speaker 2: a very long time, your black ass should not have
[24:26] Speaker 2: gone to the University of Texas, right? There's a reason
[24:29] Speaker 2: why Jackson State was still cranking out first round picks
[24:33] Speaker 2: into the 21st century.
[24:33] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[24:35] Speaker 1: Because them boys would rather, it's an apartheid state.
[24:37] Speaker 2: They was going to Jackson State before it was that
[24:40] Speaker 2: they were going to Ole Miss. So yeah, I do
[24:42] Speaker 2: get saying, for your own good, you should not go here.
[24:46] Speaker 1: But I don't think that's the discussion that we're having.
[24:48] Speaker 2: This one where I find it interesting is, again, it's
[24:51] Speaker 2: telling people, also, we need to stop watching this because
[24:54] Speaker 2: we're in a different place now where this is the
[24:56] Speaker 2: first generation, really, of black people really caring about those schools.
[25:00] Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely.
[25:01] Speaker 2: We could decide, hey, we ain't rooting for UGA no more.
[25:05] Speaker 2: We ain't rooting for LSU. We're not doing whatever. And
[25:10] Speaker 2: if we're going to do that along with telling the
[25:11] Speaker 2: boys not to go there, I'm standing right beside you.
[25:13] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, look, I mean, I mean, without giving,
[25:16] Speaker 3: I mean, I've always rooted against schools that I assume
[25:19] Speaker 3: were more racist than others. Like I've never, you know,
[25:21] Speaker 3: so if that's a part. Oh yeah, that's true.
[25:23] Speaker 1: But rooting against, that's not like.
[25:25] Speaker 3: So what, I mean, I mean, again, I'm, I don't think, again,
[25:28] Speaker 3: I don't think this conversation, if me not talking about
[25:30] Speaker 3: the SEC is, is I, I mean, I guess that's,
[25:34] Speaker 3: I don't know. I still don't quite see the analogy there,
[25:37] Speaker 3: but again.
[25:37] Speaker 1: The analogy is that we are given oxygen.
[25:42] Speaker 2: To these programs in what are becoming these apartheid states, right?
[25:47] Speaker 3: Do you think Ole Miss enjoys us talking about this
[25:50] Speaker 3: like this? Do you think Alabama- No, no, no, no, no.
[25:52] Speaker 2: I'm talking about their football teams. I'm not talking about
[25:55] Speaker 2: them in a critical way.
[25:57] Speaker 3: I will never not talk about that even when I
[25:58] Speaker 3: talk about their football teams.
[25:59] Speaker 2: No, but I'm saying when September comes around- Yes. We're
[26:03] Speaker 2: still going to go about the business of college football as-
[26:06] Speaker 2: Even if we talk about what's going on with the states,
[26:08] Speaker 2: we're not going to change.
[26:11] Speaker 1: You can go to those schools and talk about the
[26:12] Speaker 1: voting shit if you want to. We can say that.
[26:15] Speaker 3: Every week that I talk about Ole Miss and college football,
[26:18] Speaker 3: as anybody who's following me knows, I'm talking about the
[26:20] Speaker 3: Confederate-ass uniforms and the Confederate-ass colors.
[26:22] Speaker 2: But I'm saying that the dudes we're telling not to
[26:25] Speaker 2: go could easily go there and do the exact same
[26:27] Speaker 2: thing that you're talking about. We are not boycotting them,
[26:30] Speaker 2: but we are asking other people to boycott.
[26:32] Speaker 3: Okay, but you know what, Bo? If they do go
[26:34] Speaker 3: there and they put that kind of heat on them, great.
[26:38] Speaker 3: Then I have a little bit less of a problem.
[26:40] Speaker 3: But I think the issue is that nobody says anything
[26:47] Speaker 3: and they just keep going to those schools. I would
[26:51] Speaker 3: prefer if they picked one. And again, I understand that
[26:53] Speaker 3: takes a level of courage that is asking a level
[26:56] Speaker 3: of commitment from people that may not be fair, but
[26:59] Speaker 3: we live in unfair times, right?
[27:01] Speaker 2: Right.
[27:01] Speaker 3: And I think one of the biggest problems is that
[27:04] Speaker 3: we don't see ourselves as part of a community anymore.
[27:07] Speaker 3: And it was just like, why would I give up
[27:08] Speaker 3: my opportunity if you're going to go to work? Well,
[27:11] Speaker 3: I mean, that is fantastic, but that is not going to,
[27:14] Speaker 3: that is what's part of the problem here. Like, I
[27:16] Speaker 3: just don't, I think that like at a certain point,
[27:18] Speaker 3: we have to start seeing each other as kin and
[27:21] Speaker 3: as people with destinies that are tied together. And I
[27:24] Speaker 3: don't think it's too much to ask, you know, Jeremiah
[27:27] Speaker 3: Smith has a brother to be like, I don't know, man.
[27:31] Speaker 3: Like it would be really helpful to the cause if
[27:33] Speaker 3: you said I'm not going to go to school.
[27:35] Speaker 1: I also don't I also don't think it'll be helpful
[27:37] Speaker 1: to the cause.
[27:38] Speaker 3: You don't. I do not. Really?
[27:41] Speaker 1: I think that.
[27:43] Speaker 2: White people have demonstrated very clearly that they are willing
[27:47] Speaker 2: to do racism over everything else.
[27:50] Speaker 1: Like I don't I don't think that let us not forget.
[27:55] Speaker 2: Southeast, the conference spent a long time lagging behind the
[27:58] Speaker 2: rest of the country because they just wanted to keep
[27:59] Speaker 2: on doing is right.
[28:00] Speaker 1: Doing the racism.
[28:01] Speaker 3: Right.
[28:01] Speaker 2: They've they've they've demonstrated that they've been cool with that
[28:05] Speaker 2: at different points. I think it could, you know, it
[28:07] Speaker 2: could take a stand. But in hearing what you're saying,
[28:09] Speaker 2: I think you're missing my point. If it's a we because.
[28:14] Speaker 1: That's that's in line with your larger point about community.
[28:17] Speaker 3: Yes.
[28:17] Speaker 2: If it's a we, I'm hearing it. I'm hearing a
[28:21] Speaker 2: lot of here's what y'all can do. without much, and
[28:25] Speaker 2: this is what I'm going to do with you. Not
[28:26] Speaker 2: from you personally. But I feel like that's where my
[28:31] Speaker 2: issue comes up. While we advise them, go places that
[28:35] Speaker 2: really ain't going to treat.
[28:36] Speaker 1: Us much better.
[28:38] Speaker 3: That may be fair, but I think this is all
[28:41] Speaker 3: part of a multi-pronged effort. I don't think anybody is
[28:44] Speaker 3: saying the potential college athletes are the only one. There
[28:48] Speaker 3: are people that are marching. There are people that are
[28:50] Speaker 3: working on legislation. There are people all, you know, organizing
[28:53] Speaker 3: in their communities that are going to still try to
[28:56] Speaker 3: turn out votes in spite of the tremendous obstacles against them.
[28:59] Speaker 3: There's a lot of people making a lot of sacrifices
[29:01] Speaker 3: that I hope that people educate those players on so
[29:05] Speaker 3: they don't think that they're in it alone because they
[29:07] Speaker 3: are not. There are a lot of other people doing things.
[29:09] Speaker 3: There are people writing about stuff. Like, this is not...
[29:12] Speaker 3: You know, I'm not trying to scare people, but, man,
[29:16] Speaker 3: we're sort of through the looking glass on this. No, no, no.
[29:18] Speaker 1: This is a thing.
[29:19] Speaker 2: I don't think it really hit me for whatever reason
[29:22] Speaker 2: until over the weekend that I realized, like, what percentage
[29:25] Speaker 2: of the Congressional Black Caucus is going to be wiped
[29:27] Speaker 2: out by these maps?
[29:27] Speaker 1: Something like a third?
[29:29] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[29:29] Speaker 1: Or something like that?
[29:30] Speaker 2: Like, when Jasmine Crockett ran for Senate, the part that
[29:32] Speaker 2: people didn't get was her district didn't exist anymore.
[29:34] Speaker 3: It didn't exist anymore. She had to go somewhere.
[29:36] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[29:36] Speaker 2: And so it's, we only get black representation if we
[29:40] Speaker 2: get a whole block, we get a whole neighborhood. Otherwise,
[29:43] Speaker 2: it ain't going to happen. And they are just, it's
[29:45] Speaker 2: not coincidental that they're doing this, right? It's not that, oh,
[29:49] Speaker 2: the maps are being redrawn.
[29:50] Speaker 1: And what do you know? Black people aren't going to
[29:51] Speaker 1: have representation anymore. as they did before. No, this is
[29:54] Speaker 1: the plan. This is not a bug. This is the feature.
[29:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Look, I mean, again, and I'm not trying
[30:00] Speaker 3: to scare people. There's nothing to stop the federal government
[30:03] Speaker 3: from coming after you right now and just locking you
[30:05] Speaker 3: up for whatever reason under any pretext, and they don't
[30:08] Speaker 3: have to respond to anybody. And it could be for
[30:10] Speaker 3: any reason. It could be like, I don't like what
[30:12] Speaker 3: you said. I thought you threatened people with your advocacy
[30:15] Speaker 3: for Palestine or something like that. And it could be like, well,
[30:18] Speaker 3: you know, they can pretty much gin up any pretext
[30:20] Speaker 3: to fuck you up right now. And so... I think
[30:23] Speaker 3: that part of our job is bringing light to what's
[30:28] Speaker 3: going on in this country. And that's a part of it.
[30:30] Speaker 3: And look, man, again, it would be really sad if
[30:34] Speaker 3: a kid had to miss out on $ 6 million in
[30:37] Speaker 3: Georgia to get $ 5 million in Michigan. But I still
[30:42] Speaker 3: think that it's not that much to ask. And I
[30:44] Speaker 3: hope that people... talk to them about it. And I
[30:46] Speaker 3: hope that they educate those kids about all the other
[30:49] Speaker 3: stuff that's going on around them.
[30:50] Speaker 2: So that they know that we, I keep hearing you
[30:52] Speaker 2: on that. I'm not saying it's that much to, it's,
[30:54] Speaker 2: you seem to have a plan for what you willing
[30:56] Speaker 2: to do.
[30:57] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[30:58] Speaker 2: I don't feel like the majority of the people who
[30:59] Speaker 2: are saying this have the same place.
[31:01] Speaker 3: You don't think the NAACP has a plan?
[31:05] Speaker 2: I mean, that's a larger discussion that I'm not really
[31:08] Speaker 2: trying to get into right now.
[31:09] Speaker 3: Okay.
[31:10] Speaker 2: Like don't, I mean, that's, That's an example that you
[31:13] Speaker 2: could pull, but they're not the only people. I just,
[31:15] Speaker 2: I don't like old people telling young people to go
[31:18] Speaker 2: put up to fight and I'm going to watch you
[31:19] Speaker 2: and tell you that you're doing a great job.
[31:21] Speaker 3: Here's the thing, man. I mean, Jesse Jackson, man. I mean,
[31:23] Speaker 3: this is three months after Jesse Jackson died, which is
[31:26] Speaker 3: sort of appropriate that the VRA dies after him. And
[31:31] Speaker 3: he asked people, again, he's an old head. John Lewis
[31:34] Speaker 3: was an old head. There's a lot of, you know,
[31:37] Speaker 3: James Clyburn, who almost got his head beaten in Orangeburg,
[31:40] Speaker 3: South Carolina. There's a lot of old people who have
[31:44] Speaker 3: sacrificed and given up things in ways that we are
[31:47] Speaker 3: not always available. And then they look back and they say, hey, look, man,
[31:50] Speaker 3: I fought my whole. The thing is, these old people
[31:52] Speaker 3: don't have to give a shit. They can say, you
[31:53] Speaker 3: know what? We fought for our rights. Our time is
[31:56] Speaker 3: at the end. And good luck to you. Like, fuck y'all.
[31:59] Speaker 1: They could do that.
[31:59] Speaker 3: But they're looking back at us and they know what
[32:02] Speaker 3: life was like on the other side of this thing.
[32:04] Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
[32:04] Speaker 1: Old people. I don't listen to old people.
[32:06] Speaker 2: Right?
[32:07] Speaker 3: You just talking about niggas saying anything.
[32:09] Speaker 2: More or less.
[32:12] Speaker 1: Okay. It's easy to tell other people what to do.
[32:14] Speaker 1: It is. It is.
[32:15] Speaker 3: Right.
[32:15] Speaker 1: And so, no, I'm not talking about, you know, the
[32:18] Speaker 1: late John Lewis.
[32:19] Speaker 3: Okay?
[32:19] Speaker 1: I'm not talking, like, don't take it to the extreme. Okay.
[32:23] Speaker 2: But I'm just saying it's much easier to tell other
[32:26] Speaker 2: people what to do. Now I think you may raise
[32:28] Speaker 2: a decent point, right? You could go get this money
[32:30] Speaker 2: at Michigan or whatever it is. I just, I guess,
[32:34] Speaker 2: I guess I more than anything, I guess I'm more
[32:36] Speaker 2: inclined to say I'm not necessarily inclined to chastise someone
[32:39] Speaker 2: if they do not under these circumstances, because I think this,
[32:42] Speaker 2: I think that that decision is a bit more complex.
[32:46] Speaker 3: That, that is fair. Uh, and I, the thing is
[32:50] Speaker 3: you can't build community with somebody when they turn 17
[32:52] Speaker 3: or 18 years old. I mean, that's part of it, right?
[32:55] Speaker 3: So if somebody comes to you, I'm a five-star athlete now.
[32:58] Speaker 3: I have never heard of you before. And you telling
[33:00] Speaker 3: me I can't go to Auburn because what?
[33:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the thing. If we go do this,
[33:06] Speaker 2: this is a 10-year project, right?
[33:09] Speaker 3: We got to work on it.
[33:11] Speaker 2: Now, if we talk about it like that, like you start,
[33:13] Speaker 2: we're building this up along the way.
[33:16] Speaker 1: Okay. You understand what I'm saying? At that point, now
[33:20] Speaker 1: I'm hearing you.
[33:20] Speaker 2: If the guy that is running the AAU program or
[33:24] Speaker 2: whatever it is, It's like, look, we're going to start
[33:26] Speaker 2: talking to you boys about this or the 707 program.
[33:29] Speaker 1: How are they doing?
[33:29] Speaker 3: Right.
[33:30] Speaker 2: You know, we're going to talk. We're going to start
[33:31] Speaker 2: talking about this. And these are the things like everything
[33:34] Speaker 2: that we need to do as it relates to this.
[33:35] Speaker 2: And this is one of the great mistakes we make
[33:37] Speaker 2: is we don't we don't got so much that we
[33:39] Speaker 2: expect school to do.
[33:39] Speaker 3: Right.
[33:40] Speaker 1: Like we expect we we expect the tools of the
[33:43] Speaker 1: man to do these things for us.
[33:45] Speaker 2: But start this from the beginning. Now, again, I keep
[33:48] Speaker 2: saying the same thing. I'm not sure where exactly we're
[33:51] Speaker 2: supposed to go under these circumstances. That's going to truly
[33:54] Speaker 2: feel that much better.
[33:56] Speaker 1: But I get that.
[33:58] Speaker 2: All right, now, coming up next, because we have been
[34:00] Speaker 2: rolling for a minute, we got more coming up with
[34:03] Speaker 2: Joel Anderson, including what the hell going on with Stephen A.

[35:12] Speaker 2: Joel Anderson.
[35:15] Speaker 1: So I hate when this happens, right? Stephen A.
[35:18] Speaker 2: Smith, when he was going off on Jalen Brown the
[35:20] Speaker 2: other day, and he said, the whole thing is the
[35:22] Speaker 2: reason that you did this is because.
[35:24] Speaker 1: You know to talk about me going to get you clicks.
[35:26] Speaker 3: And the truth is, it does. It works.
[35:31] Speaker 1: It does.
[35:31] Speaker 3: It really works.
[35:33] Speaker 1: It is. It is. Yeah. You know what I mean?
[35:37] Speaker 2: Like when I had Jake Paul on Game Theory, and
[35:40] Speaker 2: he was like, you're just using me for clout.
[35:41] Speaker 1: I was like.
[35:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, man, look, cannabis is a lot.
[35:48] Speaker 3: We know a lot less about cannabis if he didn't go,
[35:50] Speaker 3: if LL Cool J didn't respond to him.
[35:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, nah, nah, nah.
[35:55] Speaker 2: But so what I find objectively, there are a couple
[35:57] Speaker 2: of things I find objectively interesting about Stephen A.
[36:00] Speaker 1: Smith.
[36:00] Speaker 2: And for those who don't know, Jalen Brown went on
[36:03] Speaker 2: Twitch because that's what he do now. And I would, yeah, okay,
[36:07] Speaker 2: I'll get to that point later. Jalen Brown goes on
[36:09] Speaker 2: Twitch and he tells, basically, we tell Stephen A. he
[36:11] Speaker 2: need to quit his job. Yeah.
[36:12] Speaker 3: Right?
[36:13] Speaker 2: He ain't no real journalist. He just out here for
[36:15] Speaker 2: the clickbait, everything else. And I actually, to be honest
[36:18] Speaker 2: with you, I had not found that Stephen A. Smith
[36:21] Speaker 2: had really been nearly as mean to Jalen Brown as
[36:23] Speaker 2: Jalen Brown believes that Stephen A.
[36:24] Speaker 1: Smith has been. But whatever. He gets on. Stephen A.
[36:27] Speaker 2: Smith took seven minutes on first take going after this
[36:30] Speaker 2: dude that low-key ended with threats of, you don't really
[36:32] Speaker 2: want me, basically, you don't want me to tell everything
[36:35] Speaker 2: that I know. What struck me about the seven minutes
[36:37] Speaker 2: was not simply the seven minutes, but the fact that
[36:39] Speaker 2: the First Take Twitter account took all seven minutes and
[36:42] Speaker 2: put it online, which sounds to me like something that
[36:45] Speaker 2: the boss asked them to do. Didn't even wait and
[36:49] Speaker 2: let the clip accounts go ahead and do it.
[36:53] Speaker 1: They did it themselves.
[36:55] Speaker 3: When it got there. Yeah. They ended the show and
[36:59] Speaker 3: he was like, all right, I want you to clip that.
[37:02] Speaker 1: Hold that. Don't edit it. Nothing. Run it.
[37:06] Speaker 2: Yeah maybe it didn't go that way right like maybe
[37:08] Speaker 2: their own social team you know how i feel about
[37:10] Speaker 2: social teams maybe their own social team made the decision
[37:14] Speaker 2: but anyway it went out there i would throw a
[37:17] Speaker 2: couple things out there right number one i'm curious your
[37:19] Speaker 2: thoughts on this part all these athletes all this time
[37:24] Speaker 2: ain't want to talk to us because the media be
[37:26] Speaker 2: making them look bad and they want to go straight
[37:29] Speaker 2: to their audience without anybody manipulating their messages. And I
[37:34] Speaker 2: think a lot of them should look around and realize
[37:36] Speaker 2: how many times we was actually looking out.
[37:38] Speaker 3: Man. I'm glad you said that because the first part
[37:43] Speaker 3: of the Stephen A rant that kind of got lost was, man,
[37:47] Speaker 3: get your ass a studio.
[37:49] Speaker 1: Yo, that was so funny.
[37:52] Speaker 2: He basically told that motherfucker, it doesn't difference between a 4.0.
[37:56] Speaker 1: And a 4.6, right?
[37:57] Speaker 2: He said, get you a studio, get you a director,
[38:00] Speaker 2: get you a producer.
[38:03] Speaker 3: Yo, class up your organization, brother, you know, before you
[38:06] Speaker 3: come at me, okay? Because, I mean, if you do
[38:08] Speaker 3: look at the Jalen Twitch stream, it's just kind of,
[38:12] Speaker 3: I don't know, it's just very low energy content. Very sad,
[38:14] Speaker 3: the presentation isn't well. Like to your point, athletes, and
[38:19] Speaker 3: you know, once upon a time I consider myself to
[38:20] Speaker 3: be one, think they do a better job of telling
[38:24] Speaker 3: their stories than sometimes they do. And they think they're
[38:29] Speaker 3: better at talking to their fans than having the medium,
[38:33] Speaker 3: you know, the middleman of the media sometimes. And we're
[38:37] Speaker 3: learning that as more people are getting out there and
[38:39] Speaker 3: just going, they give you the uncut raw on YouTube
[38:42] Speaker 3: or Instagram or whatever. And sometimes it's like, it would
[38:45] Speaker 3: be better if you had an editor. It would be
[38:47] Speaker 3: better if you had somebody working with you on your
[38:49] Speaker 3: messaging right now, bro. You know what I'm saying?
[38:51] Speaker 2: Yeah. Or somebody who's like getting your story down. And
[38:55] Speaker 2: I don't think people realize this, man. We don't really
[38:58] Speaker 2: be out here to burn people.
[38:59] Speaker 4: No.
[39:00] Speaker 1: Because that's not good for business.
[39:02] Speaker 3: Well, do you think that? Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
[39:05] Speaker 3: I think that's true of us. Do you think that's
[39:08] Speaker 3: true of everybody?
[39:09] Speaker 1: I think that at the median.
[39:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[39:13] Speaker 1: That's a fair characterization.
[39:14] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[39:15] Speaker 2: Because the truth is, if what you do and it
[39:19] Speaker 2: gets a little wonky when like you're dealing with somebody
[39:23] Speaker 2: who like drops into sports from like.
[39:24] Speaker 1: Rolling Stone or something like that.
[39:26] Speaker 2: Right. Because because there are no iterations in the relationship.
[39:30] Speaker 2: right an iterated relationship requires things happen in the name
[39:34] Speaker 2: of trust but the truth is a lot of people
[39:36] Speaker 2: walking around with a lot of things they know and
[39:39] Speaker 2: they do not put out there and there are sometimes
[39:42] Speaker 2: you get the money quote and you can't throw it back.
[39:44] Speaker 3: Yes.
[39:45] Speaker 1: Right?
[39:45] Speaker 2: But I think all of us have been in a
[39:47] Speaker 2: place where we've been like, nah, I'm just not going
[39:49] Speaker 2: to put that in there. We don't want to cause
[39:51] Speaker 2: any problem. First, reporters want to be liked. They want
[39:55] Speaker 2: their job to be easy. They have to be around you.
[39:58] Speaker 1: There's a couple of them other dudes, right? But not
[40:00] Speaker 1: that many.
[40:01] Speaker 3: Not that many. Most of us, most of the people,
[40:04] Speaker 3: and I consider myself just like a work-a-day guy. I
[40:07] Speaker 3: had to go to the locker room, get information. I
[40:10] Speaker 3: want as little friction as possible. Like if you can
[40:12] Speaker 3: break me, also, man, I really want us to like
[40:15] Speaker 3: each other because maybe someday you may tell me stuff, right?
[40:18] Speaker 3: We can work together on that kind of thing.
[40:20] Speaker 1: Exactly.
[40:21] Speaker 3: Yeah. But yeah, so I'm not going to, why would
[40:23] Speaker 3: I embarrass you over something in your personal life? That's
[40:27] Speaker 3: not worth it to me because I'm coming to you
[40:29] Speaker 3: in this context. So yeah, absolutely.
[40:31] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[40:31] Speaker 1: But I think.
[40:34] Speaker 2: I think these cats probably do more to make themselves
[40:36] Speaker 2: look bad than we do because you know who their
[40:38] Speaker 2: editors are now?
[40:40] Speaker 3: People.
[40:41] Speaker 2: People who watch them streams and want the hits and
[40:45] Speaker 2: clip out or the social producer or whatever it is, right?
[40:48] Speaker 2: Those people are making you look way worse than we
[40:52] Speaker 2: did over.
[40:53] Speaker 1: The course of time. That's point number one. Number two,
[40:55] Speaker 1: and maybe you can help me out with this.
[40:58] Speaker 2: I have been hearing for 10 years how smart Jalen
[41:02] Speaker 2: Brown is.
[41:03] Speaker 1: Oh, man.
[41:05] Speaker 2: I need somebody to explain it to me. And I'm
[41:08] Speaker 2: not saying that he's not smart.
[41:10] Speaker 1: It's possible.
[41:11] Speaker 2: I just haven't seen any of the evidence of what
[41:14] Speaker 2: you're talking about. Antonio Brown was his agent once.
[41:18] Speaker 4: Oh, man.
[41:19] Speaker 3: That's right.
[41:20] Speaker 1: Remember, Kanye was his guy. That's right.
[41:22] Speaker 4: Oh, man.
[41:22] Speaker 3: I've never seen.
[41:23] Speaker 2: The evidence of what is this Jalen Brown is so
[41:26] Speaker 2: smart and nothing that he's doing and it's Stephen A.
[41:28] Speaker 1: Smith back and forth. That's it. I just want, just
[41:32] Speaker 1: somebody put me up on game is all I'm saying.
[41:35] Speaker 3: You know what? I think, so do you think that
[41:37] Speaker 3: Jalen Brown gets the cow? And he did, he gave
[41:40] Speaker 3: a speech one time and I can't remember what school
[41:43] Speaker 3: it was at, but it was on something about like
[41:45] Speaker 3: his mission or whatever. And he talked, I mean, it
[41:48] Speaker 3: was a very thoughtful speech that he gave, but I
[41:53] Speaker 3: think that that gave him some bail that maybe he
[41:55] Speaker 3: didn't necessarily deserve. And again, I look, I don't think that,
[41:58] Speaker 3: I think that Jalen Brown, I like the way that
[42:00] Speaker 3: he carries himself. Maybe smartness isn't what it is or intelligence.
[42:05] Speaker 3: It's like dignity and seriousness. You could tell that he
[42:09] Speaker 3: is a very serious person. Stephen A said he doesn't
[42:12] Speaker 3: seem to suffer fools. So I bet a lot of
[42:14] Speaker 3: people read that and they're like, that's either really smart
[42:16] Speaker 3: or really uppity depending on who you are.
[42:20] Speaker 1: But what I.
[42:21] Speaker 3: Saw in this beef is that Stephen A is a
[42:25] Speaker 3: master of rhetoric and clarity. It's not hard to figure
[42:28] Speaker 3: out what he's saying. He's always on point, even if
[42:31] Speaker 3: you don't agree with him. He's hitting his points. Man,
[42:34] Speaker 3: Jalen Brown was having an argument about journalism. And that's
[42:36] Speaker 3: not what was going on here. This has nothing to
[42:38] Speaker 3: do with journalism. And I'm like, why did you... I'm like,
[42:40] Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying? Jalen, why do you keep
[42:42] Speaker 3: talking about journalism that he's not practicing journalism? I mean,
[42:45] Speaker 3: I'm sure Stephen A would agree with that.
[42:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
[42:49] Speaker 2: Journalism is one of them terms like communism, like capitalism,
[42:54] Speaker 2: like socialism. Ask somebody what that means. and you might
[42:58] Speaker 2: get a bunch of different answers.
[43:01] Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
[43:02] Speaker 3: I mean, I.
[43:03] Speaker 1: Like, I don't know.
[43:06] Speaker 2: When Jalen Brown says that you're not engaging in journalism,
[43:09] Speaker 2: I don't know what he means.
[43:12] Speaker 3: That's fair.
[43:12] Speaker 2: I'm not saying he doesn't know what journalism is. I'm
[43:15] Speaker 2: saying it's a term that is broadly applied.
[43:17] Speaker 1: Right.
[43:17] Speaker 3: So do you think he also... Like, is an analogy
[43:22] Speaker 3: or a good one would have been like, media. If
[43:26] Speaker 3: he just said, this isn't good media. You're not putting
[43:29] Speaker 3: out good content.
[43:30] Speaker 2: When Draymond Green was in his old media, new media thing.
[43:38] Speaker 1: These guys are not scholars of this industry.
[43:41] Speaker 3: But in that part of it, we shouldn't have to
[43:45] Speaker 3: guess at what he meant if you're going to do this.
[43:48] Speaker 1: Say that one more time.
[43:49] Speaker 3: We shouldn't have to guess to what you were trying
[43:51] Speaker 3: to say or what you meant if you're going.
[43:53] Speaker 1: To do this.
[43:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, but again, I just think this is a, this
[43:57] Speaker 2: discussion about what is journalism or what is media, dah, dah, dah.
[44:01] Speaker 2: These are every now and then I come across a
[44:03] Speaker 2: word where I'm like, you know, I know how to
[44:04] Speaker 2: use it in a sentence, but if you were to
[44:07] Speaker 2: ask me to tell you what it means, I'm not
[44:09] Speaker 2: exactly sure. And so I think, I think what he's
[44:13] Speaker 2: just saying about Stephen A is I don't think you,
[44:15] Speaker 2: I just don't think you fair.
[44:17] Speaker 1: Right.
[44:18] Speaker 2: Like I just don't, but that's not the same thing
[44:19] Speaker 2: as journalism. Like, like, You know, when people are like, well,
[44:22] Speaker 2: Stephen A is not a journalist anymore. No, first, I
[44:25] Speaker 2: think Stephen A is still a journalist. I think First
[44:27] Speaker 2: Take is not a journalistic show. But I think that
[44:29] Speaker 2: Stephen A takes a lot of the practices of journalism
[44:32] Speaker 2: to inform what he does on that show, which is
[44:34] Speaker 2: a commentary show.
[44:36] Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Yeah, that's fair. I mean, yeah,
[44:38] Speaker 3: it could be totally that he just got that wrong.
[44:40] Speaker 3: Because I was like, he kept saying journalism. And I
[44:42] Speaker 3: was like. Does he think that Stephen A is like,
[44:45] Speaker 3: that this is based on reporting? Sometimes, again, a lot
[44:49] Speaker 3: of what Stephen A says on First Take is informed
[44:51] Speaker 3: by the conversations he has with other people. That is
[44:53] Speaker 3: a part of journalism, right?
[44:54] Speaker 2: Yes.
[44:55] Speaker 3: But the practice that he's on there doing, that's not journalism.
[44:58] Speaker 3: That is media. That is just content. And again, it's
[45:01] Speaker 3: not bad. That's not a value judgment, but that's just
[45:03] Speaker 3: what is going on.
[45:05] Speaker 1: Yeah. But my other thing on it is, I just
[45:09] Speaker 1: don't think that threatening people is a great look or idea, right?
[45:17] Speaker 2: Like one thing that fascinates me about Stephen A is
[45:20] Speaker 2: that he's like, I am as big a star as
[45:24] Speaker 2: everybody I cover. Like that is how he sees himself.
[45:27] Speaker 2: You see that in the way that he walks through arenas.
[45:29] Speaker 2: You see that in doing all the commercials and everything
[45:31] Speaker 2: else is that he sees himself As in this ecosystem,
[45:36] Speaker 2: not simply like you go to a bar with something
[45:39] Speaker 2: you go to a bar in the city during a
[45:41] Speaker 2: sporting sporting events going on.
[45:43] Speaker 1: There's an ecosystem, right? There's the players.
[45:45] Speaker 2: They're all the people that are kind of around the
[45:46] Speaker 2: players is maybe some people from the league. And then
[45:49] Speaker 2: there are the journalists who are just there and around
[45:51] Speaker 2: and part of the job. That's how you get up
[45:53] Speaker 2: on game is being around. Like there's just the NBA
[45:56] Speaker 2: in particular I'm more familiar with, but it's just a
[45:59] Speaker 2: world around it. The groupies, they get to the first
[46:02] Speaker 2: security guard. The groupies, they get to the second security guard.
[46:04] Speaker 2: All of it is, but it's a whole biological system.
[46:08] Speaker 1: That exists. And Stephen A.
[46:10] Speaker 2: the journalist or the writer, was typically a guy who
[46:13] Speaker 2: was just kind of there hanging around. Even if you
[46:15] Speaker 2: got to the heights of it, you're kind of a
[46:17] Speaker 2: guy that's just there.
[46:18] Speaker 1: Stephen A.
[46:18] Speaker 2: Sees himself as a guy that is coming in and
[46:21] Speaker 2: is the same as all these other dudes. In fact,
[46:25] Speaker 2: to be fair to him, is more famous than probably 75%
[46:27] Speaker 2: of them at this point.
[46:29] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[46:31] Speaker 1: And makes this much money. He made more than the
[46:34] Speaker 1: mid-level exception.
[46:35] Speaker 3: Right.
[46:36] Speaker 1: That's fair.
[46:36] Speaker 3: I mean, he does. I mean, yeah, Stephen A, that's probably,
[46:39] Speaker 3: Stephen A probably more famous than 90 to 95% of athletes,
[46:42] Speaker 3: to be honest, bro. I mean, you know. I think that, yeah,
[46:46] Speaker 3: Stephen A should not do, I mean, here's the thing
[46:49] Speaker 3: that I think of, speaking of journalism. Well, you have information,
[46:54] Speaker 3: which you're alluding to is the idea that you have
[46:58] Speaker 3: information as to why Jalen Brown's teammates died. And people
[47:02] Speaker 3: in the league don't like him and may not necessarily
[47:05] Speaker 3: want to work with him. Why wouldn't you report that
[47:07] Speaker 3: if you have that information? Why would you withhold that
[47:09] Speaker 3: from us? It was kind of like the Reuben Baines shit.
[47:12] Speaker 3: Like during the draft, they were like, oh yeah, everybody
[47:14] Speaker 3: happened to know that he had killed somebody in a
[47:16] Speaker 3: car accident a year ago. Oh, for real? Why didn't
[47:18] Speaker 3: y'all tell us that? And that's kind of how I
[47:20] Speaker 3: feel about this. That's totally within the... Isn't that not
[47:24] Speaker 3: totally within... fair game to talk about that on that
[47:28] Speaker 3: show if he has that information. So why would you
[47:30] Speaker 3: withhold it, Stephen A? Which goes to show them that
[47:33] Speaker 3: it's not really, to your point about making threats against people,
[47:38] Speaker 3: that actually that's like agenda-based shit. Wouldn't people say that?
[47:42] Speaker 3: It's like, oh, you made me mad now and I
[47:43] Speaker 3: want to say something bad about you on air. Well,
[47:45] Speaker 3: you had information all along if you were being fair
[47:48] Speaker 3: and impartial. And this was something that was going to
[47:50] Speaker 3: teach us and tell us about the behind the scenes
[47:54] Speaker 3: of one of the NBA's most prominent and best teams
[47:58] Speaker 3: and why things may not be working out in the
[48:00] Speaker 3: way we think. Like, you're only going to tell us
[48:03] Speaker 3: that because you're mad?
[48:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my thing. If it hasn't been worth saying
[48:08] Speaker 1: up to this point, then it's not worth saying. Yeah.
[48:10] Speaker 2: Yeah. If it's worth saying because the person you're covering
[48:14] Speaker 2: has offended you, that doesn't play well.
[48:19] Speaker 1: That's why they don't like us.
[48:25] Speaker 3: That is kind of like the exact example of a
[48:28] Speaker 3: thing that they would accuse us of doing. Oh, you're
[48:31] Speaker 3: reporting on me because I didn't give you access or
[48:33] Speaker 3: because I've shut you out or because I said something
[48:36] Speaker 3: mean to you or whatever or I gave information to
[48:38] Speaker 3: another reporter and not you. And now you've got an
[48:41] Speaker 3: agenda against me and you're going to try to embarrass me.
[48:43] Speaker 3: They say that all the time. They do. Like that
[48:45] Speaker 3: is an allegation made against media fairly regularly. And what
[48:49] Speaker 3: Stephen A is saying is that, yeah, it's kind of,
[48:51] Speaker 3: I mean, shit, some of us do do that. I'm
[48:53] Speaker 3: down to do it. And I don't, you know, I
[48:56] Speaker 3: don't think that's a good look. But I also understand
[49:00] Speaker 3: that again, Stephen A is not a reporter. Like, like
[49:02] Speaker 3: this is, this is good business for Stephen A, man. Like,
[49:05] Speaker 3: I don't, I can't, I mean, I, I don't think
[49:07] Speaker 3: I have to respect everything that he does, but I
[49:11] Speaker 3: know that this is all part of the theater that
[49:13] Speaker 3: Stephen A. Smith, he did this shit with Kevin Durant.
[49:15] Speaker 3: You don't want me to go there.
[49:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm kind of like, I'm surprised that that's not
[49:23] Speaker 2: an approach I would recommend.
[49:26] Speaker 3: Not many people can do that either, by the way.
[49:28] Speaker 1: That is also true.
[49:30] Speaker 2: And look, man, there's always been journalists, media figures, whoever
[49:34] Speaker 2: it is, who are powerful enough to get people to
[49:36] Speaker 2: bend to their will. There's always been the guys that, hey,
[49:40] Speaker 2: you know you better give me that information. And then
[49:42] Speaker 2: they get it and then they go. But this is,
[49:46] Speaker 2: I don't know. I looked at that one and I
[49:49] Speaker 2: was like, hey, nobody to root for.
[49:51] Speaker 1: Isn't that something?
[49:52] Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. And my advice to you, Jalen Brown, I
[49:57] Speaker 3: think Stephen A was right. Hire an editor. Hire a producer.
[50:00] Speaker 3: Get a background. Get a nice background. when you're going
[50:03] Speaker 3: to broadcast if you're going to do this. And that's
[50:05] Speaker 3: what I would say to any athlete. If you want
[50:07] Speaker 3: to talk to your public, like just professionalize your shit
[50:10] Speaker 3: a little bit and maybe you can tap into the
[50:13] Speaker 3: potential that they think is out there. But right now,
[50:15] Speaker 3: the way a lot of y'all are doing it is
[50:17] Speaker 3: just kind of look sloppy, dog.
[50:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, look, man, this is also this is not a
[50:20] Speaker 2: job that any old body can do.
[50:23] Speaker 1: It's just not.
[50:24] Speaker 3: People think they can get on the mic and just
[50:26] Speaker 3: it'll you know, they can say whatever they And that
[50:29] Speaker 3: what we do is not hard. I'm like, bro, I
[50:32] Speaker 3: understand that sometimes we can make it look like this
[50:34] Speaker 3: is just a fun conversation between friends, but there's a
[50:36] Speaker 3: lot of shit that goes into the background before you
[50:39] Speaker 3: get on here. And once you're on here, you got
[50:41] Speaker 3: to be sort of entertaining, man. You got to get
[50:43] Speaker 3: people to be willing to look up at you or
[50:46] Speaker 3: listen to what you got to say. And everybody just
[50:48] Speaker 3: can't do that.
[50:49] Speaker 2: Oh, and I feel like I don't know how many
[50:53] Speaker 2: people listening to this can do what I do. You
[50:56] Speaker 2: just can't. By the way, I probably can't.
[50:59] Speaker 1: Do what you do.
[51:01] Speaker 2: I am a professional at my job. Wow, the thing
[51:07] Speaker 2: said Joel just gave me a thumbs down.
[51:09] Speaker 3: Why would he do that?
[51:10] Speaker 1: It happened on the screen. It's not your fault. I
[51:13] Speaker 1: didn't think you did. There's the thumbs up to make
[51:16] Speaker 1: up for it. Fantastic. I'm going to give you one too.
[51:19] Speaker 3: I'm going to say this because people always call me
[51:21] Speaker 3: a hater and they're wrong. Bomani is the best extemporaneous
[51:27] Speaker 3: talker that I know of. I appreciate that. Nobody is
[51:32] Speaker 3: more gifted. You can just throw a word at Bomani,
[51:36] Speaker 3: and he can talk about it intelligently. He won't step
[51:39] Speaker 3: in it. Bomani's been talking on the mic for a decade,
[51:43] Speaker 3: more than that, 15 years.
[51:45] Speaker 1: Almost 20.
[51:46] Speaker 3: 20. And never gotten into no shit that people were like, man,
[51:49] Speaker 3: you shouldn't have said that on air. You might get fired.
[51:53] Speaker 3: That is an incredible ratio, dog, to have that career
[51:56] Speaker 3: and not do that.
[51:57] Speaker 1: I appreciate that.
[51:58] Speaker 2: And just so you know, as people, you know, I
[52:00] Speaker 2: understand why you would think that you're not a hater,
[52:02] Speaker 2: but I'll have, you know, I have not tolerated any
[52:05] Speaker 2: Joel Anderson slander about them videos them boys was putting
[52:09] Speaker 2: out about you.
[52:09] Speaker 1: I don't roll for you in front of the world, dog.
[52:11] Speaker 1: Don't ever say I never did, you dig?
[52:13] Speaker 3: And look, I'm going to compliment you again. I would say, listeners,
[52:18] Speaker 3: Bo has been a friend to me in ways that
[52:21] Speaker 3: I can't even talk.
[52:21] Speaker 1: About on here.
[52:22] Speaker 3: So I I come in love, okay? I appreciate that. But,
[52:27] Speaker 3: and I did hear what you said. No, no, no.
[52:29] Speaker 3: And I heard what you said, and I'm glad you
[52:31] Speaker 3: put that out there into the ether because, again, I'm
[52:33] Speaker 3: going to talk about it on Tailgate more in depth, but, like, bro,
[52:38] Speaker 3: if you, I dare anybody to get up off their chair,
[52:42] Speaker 3: somebody that has not done anything athletic in a year,
[52:45] Speaker 3: get their ass up off the chair and go just
[52:47] Speaker 3: try to do something athletic. You know what I'm saying?
[52:49] Speaker 3: Just go try. Like, try to go for a layup.
[52:53] Speaker 3: Go try to catch a 10-yard out and see how
[52:56] Speaker 3: your body feels when you do it. And I just,
[52:58] Speaker 3: you know, I had the experience of looking on camera
[53:02] Speaker 3: and being like, man, I look like I'm the subject
[53:05] Speaker 3: of America's Funniest Home Videos. You know what I'm saying?
[53:09] Speaker 3: I was like, you know, I was like, oh, shit, man.
[53:12] Speaker 3: I'm an old man, dog. I'm like one of them old, goofy,
[53:15] Speaker 3: you know, flabby dads that just kind of, oh, that
[53:18] Speaker 3: nigga fell down there. And I was like, but you
[53:20] Speaker 3: know what? I needed it. I fed off. niggas that
[53:23] Speaker 3: were talking about me who maybe shouldn't have been talking
[53:25] Speaker 3: about me.
[53:25] Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry.
[53:26] Speaker 3: I didn't mean to say it like that. I'm fed
[53:28] Speaker 3: off of that and I'm going to be ready, dog.
[53:30] Speaker 3: I'm getting my shit together. Trust me.
[53:32] Speaker 1: Powered by Spike. Joel Anderson is powered. It is amazing
[53:39] Speaker 1: because I am so not powered by Spike and you
[53:42] Speaker 1: are 100% driven. 87, 91, 93, whatever octane Spike y'all
[53:43] Speaker 1: got over there.
[53:51] Speaker 3: Oh, man, it makes me so amped, man. I think
[53:54] Speaker 3: it's a real problem in my life because I would
[53:56] Speaker 3: like to be able to tap into that motivation all
[53:58] Speaker 3: the time, you know, because it can really make me
[54:00] Speaker 3: do powerful things, right? I remember a girl, Janae once
[54:05] Speaker 3: told me, she was like, you can't jump over this pole. Like,
[54:09] Speaker 3: you know, it's like one of them little poles on
[54:10] Speaker 3: a walking trail. And I was so offended. I'm like,
[54:13] Speaker 3: what the fuck? Come on, man, don't treat me like
[54:16] Speaker 3: I'm an elderly man. And so, bro, I started working out. Again,
[54:19] Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying? Got myself rocked up. Usually
[54:22] Speaker 3: my workouts come off as some sort of insult when
[54:24] Speaker 3: I look at myself, but I'm like, I don't like
[54:26] Speaker 3: the way that look, bro. So that's what I need
[54:30] Speaker 3: to get right.
[54:31] Speaker 2: When the race going to be? Joel Anderson versus Billy Gill.
[54:34] Speaker 2: When the race going to be? Because I need to
[54:35] Speaker 2: clear my schedule to see if I can make it.
[54:37] Speaker 3: I mean, look, I would assume sometime right before the season. Okay.
[54:41] Speaker 3: So my thing is, Anybody who saw that video, again,
[54:45] Speaker 3: Tate embarrassed me, dog.
[54:48] Speaker 1: By the way, Tate, better athlete than people realize.
[54:51] Speaker 3: Tate is a very good athlete. He is a very
[54:53] Speaker 3: good athlete. But look, man, I jammed the motherfucker way
[54:56] Speaker 3: out in the field. That wasn't in a game. In
[55:01] Speaker 3: a game, he's not even an option anymore, okay? But
[55:05] Speaker 3: I'm bringing that mentality. I'm just like, oh, I jammed
[55:07] Speaker 3: Tate down. I was like, he's no longer an option.
[55:10] Speaker 3: The quarterback is going to have to go somewhere else.
[55:12] Speaker 3: But that's not how 7-on-7 goes or one-on-ones or whatever.
[55:18] Speaker 1: It's still bothering you, isn't it?
[55:19] Speaker 3: I mean, you know, like, man, Domani can talk about me.
[55:22] Speaker 3: Van can talk about me. You know what I'm saying?
[55:24] Speaker 3: Tate can talk about me. Dominique can talk about me.
[55:28] Speaker 3: I just felt like there was some people out there
[55:30] Speaker 3: taking shots at a nigga.
[55:30] Speaker 2: Say his name.
[55:31] Speaker 1: Say his name.
[55:32] Speaker 3: No, I'm not going to say it.
[55:33] Speaker 1: Say his name.
[55:33] Speaker 3: No, I'm not going to say it.
[55:34] Speaker 1: Say his name.
[55:35] Speaker 3: I'm not going to say it. Van told me not to.
[55:37] Speaker 3: Van told me not to. Van called, you all have
[55:41] Speaker 3: had tried to stage various levels of intervention with me
[55:43] Speaker 3: this week, and I wasn't even that mad. Because there's more,
[55:47] Speaker 3: trust me, there's a lot more people, a lot more
[55:49] Speaker 3: racist people mad at me about my appearance on Rewatchables
[55:52] Speaker 3: right now. That's a whole other conversation I'm avoiding right now.
[55:56] Speaker 2: Was y'all on there talking about Hooses or something?
[55:58] Speaker 3: No, Tropic Thunder.
[56:01] Speaker 1: Did you have a problem with Tropic Thunder?
[56:03] Speaker 3: I didn't, but I didn't love it. And so because
[56:07] Speaker 3: I didn't love it, people thought that I hated it.
[56:09] Speaker 3: And I don't want to get into the background on
[56:13] Speaker 3: what happened there, but look, I did the best that
[56:16] Speaker 3: I could. I tried to be as enthusiastic about the
[56:17] Speaker 3: movie as I could.
[56:18] Speaker 2: I'm going to teach you one day how to not
[56:21] Speaker 2: keep making things happen when you're talking to your boss.
[56:28] Speaker 2: This is two times in a row that you've been
[56:30] Speaker 2: on a show with your boss and you just can't help,
[56:36] Speaker 2: I understand.
[56:37] Speaker 3: He has a total, the kind of person that comes
[56:40] Speaker 3: in to listen to my boss, who is a good dude,
[56:42] Speaker 3: very good dude, one of the best people I've ever
[56:43] Speaker 3: worked for. A lot of people that come to Bill
[56:46] Speaker 3: Simmons though, I mean, I just had to say it,
[56:48] Speaker 3: they're racist, dog.
[56:49] Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of like when I would do PTI,
[56:51] Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, this is a different audience than
[56:54] Speaker 2: when I do these daytime shows.
[56:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
[56:56] Speaker 3: And there are a lot of great Bill Simmons fans
[56:58] Speaker 3: and Ringer fans, and this has been an experience that
[57:02] Speaker 3: is truly unique. Like, I've really enjoyed it. Dog, Bomani,
[57:07] Speaker 3: you can appreciate this. When I was in Manhattan Beach
[57:10] Speaker 3: a couple weeks ago, and I'm going to go get
[57:12] Speaker 3: dinner at the water, you know what I'm saying? I
[57:14] Speaker 3: was going to just chill out, just think about stuff.
[57:18] Speaker 3: And I go to Old Navy to buy myself some pants.
[57:21] Speaker 3: And some brother in Old Navy, I see him look
[57:23] Speaker 3: at me. He's like, what? And he comes around. He's like,
[57:25] Speaker 3: are you Charles Anderson? And I was like, yeah. He
[57:28] Speaker 3: was like, man, I love you on the Beaumont Jones show.
[57:31] Speaker 3: I think it was Tyrell and Manhattan Beach. So shout
[57:34] Speaker 3: out Tyrell and Manhattan Beach. So look, man, this ringer
[57:39] Speaker 3: thing is great. But some of them people, man, they
[57:43] Speaker 3: don't want to fly in their ointment.
[57:47] Speaker 1: Yes, but Joel, I just want to remind you, some
[57:50] Speaker 1: of those people aren't people.
[57:52] Speaker 2: That's what I need you to understand about the internet
[57:55] Speaker 2: these days.
[57:55] Speaker 3: Did you see the fight I had on Threads yesterday? No, Joel.
[57:59] Speaker 1: No, I did not.
[58:00] Speaker 3: Somebody, I complimented fucking Boston. I complimented that city. They
[58:05] Speaker 3: were like, what city do you think really exceeded your expectations?
[58:11] Speaker 3: I said, Boston. I was like, it actually is kind
[58:13] Speaker 3: of pretty. Um, I like to be in on the water.
[58:16] Speaker 3: Like there's more diverse than you thought. And man, of course,
[58:19] Speaker 3: you know, every, every black person from Boston does not.
[58:23] Speaker 3: Howard Bryan had to come and be like, well, actually
[58:25] Speaker 3: it's been very diverse. We do blah, blah, blah. And
[58:27] Speaker 3: I'm like, man, I don't give a fuck, bro. I
[58:28] Speaker 3: was like, I was trying to be nice about your city.
[58:30] Speaker 3: I was trying to be nice and they couldn't even
[58:33] Speaker 3: accept it. So, you know, me, I was just like,
[58:36] Speaker 3: fuck Boston. You know, all these other people that came in,
[58:39] Speaker 3: started talking. And I'm just like, I was like, at
[58:41] Speaker 3: a certain point, I was like, man, I wonder if
[58:43] Speaker 3: this person is real. So maybe, but wouldn't that be
[58:49] Speaker 3: weird to create a bot that would do that? What's
[58:51] Speaker 3: the point of creating a bot that would have an
[58:53] Speaker 3: argument with me about Boston?
[58:58] Speaker 2: Some things aren't to be understood. Joel Anderson, check him
[59:01] Speaker 2: out on the ring of tailgate.
[59:03] Speaker 1: Go ahead and do the thing.
[59:04] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. What's up? Check me out on the ring
[59:06] Speaker 3: of tailgate and the press box and, you know, on
[59:09] Speaker 3: the website. because I got some stories to write that
[59:11] Speaker 3: will be coming up soon that will not be about sports.
[59:14] Speaker 1: All right. I'll check them out. Ladies and gentlemen, thanks

[59:35] Speaker 1: Take it easy.
