[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. We got so much basketball to talk about.
[0:23] Speaker 1: We're going to get to the Kevin Durant trade in
[0:25] Speaker 1: just a little bit, but I don't think there's any
[0:28] Speaker 1: other place for us to start than with your 2025
[0:31] Speaker 1: NBA championship. Oklahoma City Thunder. Well, actually, there is a
[0:38] Speaker 1: place to start, but it connects to the Thunder right fast.
[0:41] Speaker 1: Send a birthday shout out to the biggest Oklahoma City
[0:45] Speaker 1: Thunder fan that I know, my mama, right? So the
[0:49] Speaker 1: night before her birthday, she gets the Thunder with a victory.
[0:52] Speaker 1: And now on her favorite podcast, she gets a birthday
[0:56] Speaker 1: shout out. I see you, darling. I see you. You
[0:59] Speaker 1: got this. And they went and they made it happen.
[1:02] Speaker 1: And I'm going to tell you, I wasn't really sure
[1:05] Speaker 1: that they were going to get that at any particular point.
[1:09] Speaker 1: Indiana raced out. Obviously, Halliburton got hurt. We'll talk about
[1:13] Speaker 1: that a little bit more later. But the Pacers being
[1:16] Speaker 1: as relentless as they were, you couldn't be sure no
[1:20] Speaker 1: matter what happened that the Thunder were going to get this.
[1:23] Speaker 1: On top of the fact that, like, it's that season
[1:28] Speaker 1: where things, like, You know, during the winter, you just
[1:33] Speaker 1: have it where, you know what I'm saying, somebody gets
[1:37] Speaker 1: a little cold or the flu or whatever, and it
[1:39] Speaker 1: kind of bounces its way around the locker room, and
[1:41] Speaker 1: you just got to hope your team can survive it,
[1:44] Speaker 1: even though a couple people have been afflicted. Like, of course,
[1:47] Speaker 1: the worst of that was in COVID-19 when they was
[1:50] Speaker 1: out there picking up dudes in front of the Home
[1:51] Speaker 1: Depot in order to fill out the roster because they
[1:54] Speaker 1: wouldn't pass in the test. You dig what I'm saying?
[1:57] Speaker 1: The Thunder... at points during that game went through something else.
[2:02] Speaker 1: And luckily for them, it was a mild situation that
[2:06] Speaker 1: was bounced around. However, um a cute situation of lemon
[2:11] Speaker 1: booty was moving through the squad right like you could
[2:14] Speaker 1: you could just tell like if somebody had like the
[2:16] Speaker 1: blue light or the infrared or like one of the
[2:19] Speaker 1: 4k videos that they'd be putting on the internet to
[2:21] Speaker 1: show you how things work you'd have just seen it
[2:24] Speaker 1: it'd been a bunch of lemon peel going around right
[2:27] Speaker 1: and then you just see booties like it's all tight
[2:30] Speaker 1: You can see it. The MVP in the first half,
[2:33] Speaker 1: that man booty was looking drummy. You know what I'm saying?
[2:36] Speaker 1: Like it was tough for him. That thing contracted on
[2:40] Speaker 1: your man. You saw it with other cats on the team, man. Look,
[2:44] Speaker 1: the magnitude of trying to close out a championship is crazy.
[2:49] Speaker 1: Adding to the fact that the Thunder were the team
[2:51] Speaker 1: that already had all the pressure. And look, this is
[2:54] Speaker 1: something that I've talked about before. And I want to
[2:56] Speaker 1: make sure that I get this exactly right. because it's
[2:59] Speaker 1: very easy to mess up on these sorts of things,
[3:03] Speaker 1: but it's the real. Guys, this is only the second
[3:08] Speaker 1: year that they made the playoffs. You've seen the statistic
[3:14] Speaker 1: that this is the second youngest team ever to make
[3:16] Speaker 1: the finals, the other being the Portland Trailblazers in 1977,
[3:21] Speaker 1: who also won with Bill Walton on that squad. But
[3:27] Speaker 1: You got to normally do some things, overcome some things
[3:31] Speaker 1: to get to where you are going. And yeah, maybe
[3:33] Speaker 1: you could count losing in the second round last year
[3:36] Speaker 1: to Dallas as a thing that was overcome. But no, no, no, no.
[3:40] Speaker 1: These guys got to the top fast. I don't care
[3:42] Speaker 1: if this is the era of parody or anything else.
[3:45] Speaker 1: They got to where they were going. And then once
[3:47] Speaker 1: they were there, every now and then they look young.
[3:50] Speaker 1: They look young when they didn't put it away in
[3:52] Speaker 1: game six, which looks like something they were going to
[3:54] Speaker 1: pay for.
[3:54] Speaker 2: Right.
[3:55] Speaker 1: But they didn't. They got here. They held this together.
[3:59] Speaker 1: They have a real live, legitimate superstar. And as I
[4:04] Speaker 1: struggled with the idea of whether or not he was
[4:06] Speaker 1: the superstar and all that stuff.
[4:07] Speaker 3: Right.
[4:08] Speaker 1: The guy that I actually think is interesting, perhaps as
[4:11] Speaker 1: a comp to Shay in part because they physically look
[4:14] Speaker 1: so different. OK, and I'm just talking about on offense.
[4:20] Speaker 1: The guy I think about is Kawhi Leonard. And the
[4:23] Speaker 1: reason I think about him in the context of Kawhi
[4:25] Speaker 1: Leonard is they're both playing the same game. I'm just
[4:28] Speaker 1: trying to get to this spot. And then when I
[4:30] Speaker 1: get to this spot, it's cash for me.
[4:33] Speaker 3: Right.
[4:34] Speaker 1: Kawhi gets you over there to that right wing to
[4:37] Speaker 1: get that jump shot. It's cash. Shea, not exactly the
[4:40] Speaker 1: same spot, but he's trying to get you to the elbow.
[4:44] Speaker 1: And then once he gets to the elbow, he's got
[4:46] Speaker 1: that shot. Now, of course, the thing with Kawhi is
[4:48] Speaker 1: he gets there because he's strong like bull. It's not
[4:51] Speaker 1: exactly the same thing that's going on over there with
[4:54] Speaker 1: Shea Gildas Alexander. But he can get to his spot.
[4:58] Speaker 1: He can get those shots. He had– I looked up
[5:01] Speaker 1: at one point, Ryan, and they had the graphic and
[5:03] Speaker 1: said it was in the third quarter and he had
[5:05] Speaker 1: 22 and 10. And I was like, wow, that was
[5:07] Speaker 1: a quiet 10, 10 being assists. I was like, that
[5:10] Speaker 1: was a quiet 10.
[5:11] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's a very bizarre performance because you
[5:16] Speaker 4: never felt that he was dominating the game. But at
[5:19] Speaker 4: the same time, like he– The stats were there, and
[5:22] Speaker 4: he was clearly the best player on the floor.
[5:24] Speaker 1: You looked up and you saw those stats, and in
[5:26] Speaker 1: the end, just so we're clear, it was 29 points
[5:29] Speaker 1: and 12 assists. 8 of 27 shooting, but he got
[5:32] Speaker 1: 12 foul shots, right? When guys put up the quiet 29,
[5:38] Speaker 1: we only call it a quiet 29 when you win.
[5:44] Speaker 1: When we lose, we call them empty calories. Like, did
[5:48] Speaker 1: it really impact the game? Well, clearly on some level,
[5:51] Speaker 1: it did. My man Chet came through, holding it down
[5:54] Speaker 1: for the skinny folk. I've been seeing all y'all out there.
[5:57] Speaker 1: I don't see it with Chet, what they be talking
[5:59] Speaker 1: about with Chet. Chet put up 18 on eight field
[6:02] Speaker 1: goal attempts, and he had five blocks, right? When McConnell
[6:07] Speaker 1: Ladova was in there doing his thing, it seemed the
[6:10] Speaker 1: only thing that could do it to him was a
[6:12] Speaker 1: little white on white cry. You know what I'm saying?
[6:15] Speaker 1: Like apparently somebody, the brothers apparently didn't feel like they
[6:18] Speaker 1: was allowed to block the white man's shot. Chet was like, man,
[6:21] Speaker 1: fuck that shit, cuz. I got you. You know, he's
[6:25] Speaker 1: still white. He just talked like that. You can get
[6:28] Speaker 1: into the nuts and bolts of the basketball. I honestly
[6:30] Speaker 1: don't think that too many people came away from that
[6:32] Speaker 1: game for a number of reasons, thinking in that context
[6:36] Speaker 1: about this. But I want to throw something out here
[6:40] Speaker 1: that I... The story of how the Thunder got here
[6:44] Speaker 1: is so interesting to me. And going into the finals,
[6:49] Speaker 1: you saw a lot on the internet. I know Jamel
[6:52] Speaker 1: Hill wrote a column about this for The Atlantic. But...
[6:56] Speaker 1: People kept pointing back to Paul George as being the
[7:01] Speaker 1: guy who was the reason why all of this happened, right,
[7:04] Speaker 1: for both teams. Because Oklahoma City built their team in
[7:08] Speaker 1: large part because of the Paul George trade. And then
[7:11] Speaker 1: Indiana got here. They traded Paul George for, I want
[7:15] Speaker 1: to call it what, Victor Oladipo, Sabonis, and somebody else
[7:19] Speaker 1: I can't remember off the top of my head. And
[7:21] Speaker 1: then Sabonis got traded to Sacramento in the deal that
[7:24] Speaker 1: brought back Tyrese Halliburton. Okay, I see where people are
[7:28] Speaker 1: coming from here. But the person that people need to
[7:30] Speaker 1: talk about, going back to a dude I just brought
[7:33] Speaker 1: up earlier, the dude to talk about in this is Kawhi.
[7:37] Speaker 1: Because Kawhi, we should really call him Kawhi's associate. Y'all
[7:44] Speaker 1: ever seen that movie? Kawaza Sose. Now, again, it's my
[7:49] Speaker 1: mama's birthday, so I'm going to walk her through this,
[7:51] Speaker 1: not to ruin this for the rest of y'all. But mama,
[7:54] Speaker 1: it was this movie that was called The Usual Suspects,
[7:56] Speaker 1: and you can look this up. And it's about, it's
[7:58] Speaker 1: like a heist movie, you know, about a bunch of
[8:01] Speaker 1: criminals in a robbery or whatever. But the way the
[8:03] Speaker 1: movie is done is they have a guy and he's
[8:06] Speaker 1: sitting in an office and he's being interrogated by the
[8:11] Speaker 1: local police. And the dude is I don't know any
[8:16] Speaker 1: of the modern words that you allow to use, but, oh,
[8:20] Speaker 1: he appeared to be disabled, not just mentally, but a
[8:24] Speaker 1: little bit physically. Okay. And so they, they put the
[8:28] Speaker 1: screws on it because he's also a criminal because they
[8:30] Speaker 1: think he'll break or everything else. And as this is
[8:32] Speaker 1: going on, there's a parallel investigation and they figure out
[8:35] Speaker 1: that the real guy behind what was going on there
[8:39] Speaker 1: was this worldwide master criminal named Kaiser Sosa.
[8:43] Speaker 2: Okay.
[8:44] Speaker 1: And so the whole thing about the movie is the
[8:46] Speaker 1: dude is sitting in the room getting interrogated. The feds
[8:49] Speaker 1: are trying to find Kaiser Sosa. The locals are trying
[8:51] Speaker 1: to figure it out because they all caught up on
[8:53] Speaker 1: this other dude. And in the end, it turns out
[8:56] Speaker 1: that the invalid. I think that's OK. Like it sounds
[9:00] Speaker 1: very antiquated, but nobody told me you can't say it. Anyway,
[9:04] Speaker 1: they found out the guy with all the problems himself
[9:07] Speaker 1: was actually Kaiser Sosa. And in the end, he started
[9:10] Speaker 1: walking straight instead of walking with the limp that he
[9:12] Speaker 1: had in the movie. And it was like, oh, man,
[9:14] Speaker 1: he's Kaiser Sosa.
[9:16] Speaker 3: Right.
[9:17] Speaker 1: Brian, you remember it wasn't that long ago that we
[9:19] Speaker 1: ain't even know if Kawhi could talk.
[9:22] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I feel like I still haven't heard
[9:24] Speaker 4: him talk that much.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. A lot of people made a lot
[9:29] Speaker 1: of presumptions about the way Kawhi Leonard gets down, right?
[9:34] Speaker 2: Correct.
[9:34] Speaker 1: Then he had this uncle that was coming in and
[9:36] Speaker 1: handling his affairs. And it turns out his uncle is
[9:39] Speaker 1: actually a very accomplished man. I know somebody that actually
[9:41] Speaker 1: worked with his uncle's wife. And I think he's not
[9:44] Speaker 1: an AAU uncle. Which is what I think that people,
[9:47] Speaker 1: people just heard, man, you got an uncle, right? And
[9:49] Speaker 1: they misunderstood what time it was. But anyway, it gave
[9:52] Speaker 1: the impression that Kawhi needed somebody to like speak for him.
[9:56] Speaker 1: You see what I mean? That was the impression that
[9:58] Speaker 1: we got about Kawhi. Instead, Kawhi's associate was out here
[10:02] Speaker 1: making moves, trying to find somebody else to come with
[10:05] Speaker 1: him to play with the Clippers. And as I recall
[10:08] Speaker 1: the story, and Ryan, I ran this by you and
[10:11] Speaker 1: you remember this the same way, right? So Kawhi Leonard
[10:15] Speaker 1: was trying to find somebody to come with him. And
[10:18] Speaker 1: the way he ultimately got Paul George to decide he
[10:21] Speaker 1: wanted to come is that he called Paul George. It
[10:24] Speaker 1: was like, yo, I want you to come down here.
[10:25] Speaker 1: And he's like, no, man, me and Russ got something
[10:27] Speaker 1: going in Oklahoma City. And he was like, I don't
[10:31] Speaker 1: know how to tell you this, but your boy, he
[10:33] Speaker 1: trying to get.
[10:34] Speaker 4: Out, too.
[10:35] Speaker 1: And Paul George is like, what? He's trying to get out.
[10:38] Speaker 4: Time to go.
[10:38] Speaker 1: Fine, then I'll come with you. Little did he know.
[10:43] Speaker 1: Kawhi had called Russell Westbrook and offered him the same pitch.
[10:48] Speaker 1: And that was what Kawhi was using to say that
[10:51] Speaker 1: Russ was talking about getting out of there. Kawhi brought
[10:54] Speaker 1: it up. His gimpy ass started walking straight. Right? Like,
[11:00] Speaker 1: that was an amazing level of game. But what it
[11:02] Speaker 1: did for the Thunder that was so important was the
[11:07] Speaker 1: Thunder got this gigantic haul with all these picks and,
[11:11] Speaker 1: very importantly, Shea Gildress Alexander. They got all of that
[11:15] Speaker 1: not because of the value of Paul George, but because
[11:18] Speaker 1: that was what the Clippers had to do to get
[11:21] Speaker 1: Kawhi and Paul George. Okay? The Clippers were in a
[11:27] Speaker 1: position as they have spent the better part of the
[11:30] Speaker 1: last decade and change trying to wash all the Donald
[11:33] Speaker 1: Sterling stink off of them. They didn't have an actual
[11:36] Speaker 1: real life superstar. Kawhi Leonard had demonstrated himself at that
[11:39] Speaker 1: point with two championships, two finals MVPs to be a
[11:42] Speaker 1: legitimate superstar. A guy with an argument at that point
[11:44] Speaker 1: for being the best player in the NBA. They got him.
[11:47] Speaker 1: And then if you get Paul George as the number two,
[11:51] Speaker 1: They made the trade. I thought it was a perfectly
[11:53] Speaker 1: appropriate trade to make. They gave up the world in
[11:56] Speaker 1: order to make that happen. The next step in this, though,
[11:58] Speaker 1: now is Russell Westbrook now definitely wants to be gone
[12:02] Speaker 1: because Paul George isn't there. Nothing acrimonious, because I think
[12:05] Speaker 1: deep down, Sam Presti is looking around like, all right,
[12:07] Speaker 1: I got to get him out of here, too. But
[12:09] Speaker 1: he's kind of the most beloved player in the franchise.
[12:11] Speaker 1: So how do I pull this right? OK, made the
[12:14] Speaker 1: trade for Chris Paul. And that is always such an
[12:17] Speaker 1: interesting trade to me because I would not be surprised
[12:20] Speaker 1: if one day they retire Chris Paul's jersey in Oklahoma
[12:22] Speaker 1: City because he is perhaps the man most responsible for
[12:25] Speaker 1: them having a team in the town because of how
[12:28] Speaker 1: well it went when the Hornets were there for their
[12:31] Speaker 1: Katrina sabbatical. And the way that Chris Paul, those first
[12:34] Speaker 1: two years in the league for him, the way that
[12:36] Speaker 1: he handled himself during that time helped them get that team.
[12:40] Speaker 1: Then they brought him back. The reason I bring him up, though,
[12:42] Speaker 1: in talking about this is This was not the process.
[12:46] Speaker 1: This was not what you see happening in Utah, for example.
[12:50] Speaker 1: This was not a tank in the ways that people
[12:53] Speaker 1: talk about a tank typically. They made the playoffs that
[12:57] Speaker 1: first year after they made those trades. That's the reason
[13:00] Speaker 1: why Chris Paul was there when Shea Gildas Alexander got
[13:02] Speaker 1: his MVP, because Chris Paul was Shea's OG, right, on
[13:06] Speaker 1: that squad. That's how that worked, okay? But at every turn,
[13:13] Speaker 1: you could look at what the Thunder were doing and
[13:15] Speaker 1: they were trying to win. This was not a full
[13:18] Speaker 1: on bottom out. And the way in large part that
[13:21] Speaker 1: you know that this was not a full on bottom out.
[13:24] Speaker 1: And hey, look, they went 22 and 50 that first
[13:28] Speaker 1: year after the bubble. OK, they were 24 and 58
[13:30] Speaker 1: the year after that. They were not good. But the
[13:33] Speaker 1: next year they went 40 and 42. The team that's
[13:36] Speaker 1: trying to tank is not a team that's going to
[13:38] Speaker 1: waste its time with a 500 season. They went to
[13:42] Speaker 1: the play in and they didn't get it. They went young.
[13:47] Speaker 1: which is not the same thing. The other reason for me,
[13:51] Speaker 1: this did not feel like a full on tank. Now, granted,
[13:55] Speaker 1: they changed the rules about how the lottery worked and
[14:00] Speaker 1: everything like this. But this team only has one super
[14:07] Speaker 1: duper high pick. And that's Chet Holmgren at pick two.
[14:11] Speaker 1: Nobody else on that squad is one of those. They
[14:15] Speaker 1: got this done with a the volume of having all
[14:18] Speaker 1: the picks that came from all the moves that they made.
[14:21] Speaker 3: Right.
[14:22] Speaker 1: But they got this done by just having a great
[14:25] Speaker 1: eye for talent like that. They got here because they
[14:29] Speaker 1: have the best general manager in basketball. Like I felt
[14:33] Speaker 1: like that a long time. There was a point while
[14:34] Speaker 1: this was going where people were asking the question as
[14:37] Speaker 1: to why it was that he was not getting the
[14:39] Speaker 1: same hell for the tank. that say somebody like the
[14:42] Speaker 1: Sixers were, and I'm like, the Sixers were actively looking
[14:45] Speaker 1: for players to be terrible. Oklahoma City was truly looking
[14:48] Speaker 1: for players to help win, even if it didn't happen today.
[14:51] Speaker 1: For example, Ryan, Jalen Williams, that's the number 12 pick.
[14:57] Speaker 1: Same draft as Chet, but that's the number 12 pick
[15:01] Speaker 1: that they got there.
[15:03] Speaker 4: You look at the way they've built their team, it
[15:05] Speaker 4: feels very, very intentional. From Jalen Williams to Kaysan Wallace
[15:09] Speaker 4: to Brennan Caruso, They're going to throw waves and waves
[15:12] Speaker 4: of defenders at you. And I mean, that was their
[15:17] Speaker 4: clear identity from this entire season in this entire playoffs.
[15:20] Speaker 1: And don't forget about left outside Lou Dort.
[15:22] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[15:24] Speaker 3: Right.
[15:24] Speaker 1: They, they, It's so funny. If you've ever watched football
[15:30] Speaker 1: players play basketball, it's so funny to watch him. Yes,
[15:34] Speaker 1: the jumper.
[15:35] Speaker 2: Got it.
[15:35] Speaker 1: It is the– And also the trajectory where it goes.
[15:38] Speaker 4: The moon ball shot he hit from 40 feet. yes
[15:44] Speaker 4: well yeah we'll take a defensive tackle yes.
[15:46] Speaker 1: Well also not pretending like he is anybody other than
[15:49] Speaker 1: who he is in terms of the way he plays
[15:51] Speaker 1: defense right like this this is what it is but
[15:54] Speaker 1: it's all these guys man and it's kind of cobbled
[15:57] Speaker 1: together when you run through and look at the names
[16:00] Speaker 1: like the question was did they have enough guys like
[16:03] Speaker 1: enough guys that could go get it for you apparently
[16:06] Speaker 1: they did I still think they can stand to get
[16:09] Speaker 1: one more. But when you had Jalen.
[16:11] Speaker 5: Williams get the 40 piece in game five, you were like, oh, okay,
[16:16] Speaker 5: this is what's happening. But the build on this and
[16:19] Speaker 5: to get these young guys and the recognition that, look,
[16:21] Speaker 5: we're not going to be able to get anybody in
[16:23] Speaker 5: free agency to really come here.
[16:25] Speaker 1: We're going to have to get young guys. They're going
[16:27] Speaker 1: to have to like each other and they're going to
[16:29] Speaker 1: have to really like basketball. And that's the way that
[16:31] Speaker 1: we're going to be able to make it here is
[16:34] Speaker 1: under those circumstances, right? We have to build a team
[16:39] Speaker 1: and build a franchise that guys want to play for.
[16:43] Speaker 1: The only thing the Thunder truly has to offer the
[16:46] Speaker 1: modern NBA player is competence. We will make this the
[16:51] Speaker 1: best team it can be. We will make you the
[16:53] Speaker 1: best player you can be. That is the only way
[16:57] Speaker 1: a franchise like that could truly function at a high level, right?
[17:00] Speaker 1: To be anywhere near where they are. And think about it.
[17:04] Speaker 1: They got Russell Westbrook to sign the second contract extension.
[17:08] Speaker 1: They got Paul George to sign an extension. If you've
[17:11] Speaker 1: ever listened to Carmelo talk about playing for the Thunder
[17:14] Speaker 1: on 7 p.m. in Brooklyn, the way he talks about
[17:17] Speaker 1: that franchise and how well run it is in the
[17:19] Speaker 1: program that they have for you. This is what you're
[17:21] Speaker 1: going to do. This is how you get to hear
[17:22] Speaker 1: there and there and everything else. Like he spoke of
[17:25] Speaker 1: that franchise already. with a certain sort of reference. You
[17:28] Speaker 1: go look at the way it is with those guys
[17:30] Speaker 1: and them hanging out. Because I'm going to be honest
[17:32] Speaker 1: with you, brother. My mother's from Oklahoma City. I got
[17:34] Speaker 1: kinfolk there. Shout out to my cousin, Weld. He sent
[17:36] Speaker 1: me a text about them winning that. He said Oklahoma. Right.
[17:40] Speaker 1: He said Oklahoma City is title tag. They happy over there.
[17:47] Speaker 4: Good for them.
[17:48] Speaker 1: Yep. That's what I'm saying. Although the irony of it
[17:50] Speaker 1: is the other title town is green Bay and Oklahoma
[17:53] Speaker 1: city might be Paris compared to green Bay. So, you know,
[17:57] Speaker 1: it all runs together, but they just had, I would
[18:01] Speaker 1: rather be rich and in the NBA and some other
[18:03] Speaker 1: places that that is me, but they got it, man.
[18:07] Speaker 1: Think about this. Shane Gilders, Alexander stuck with this for
[18:09] Speaker 1: six years. They made that trade for him six years ago.
[18:14] Speaker 1: They had to sell him at every point. This is
[18:16] Speaker 1: what we're going to do. So that at no point
[18:18] Speaker 1: does he say, hey, man, I'm trying to get out
[18:19] Speaker 1: of here. That didn't happen. Six years of him. And again,
[18:25] Speaker 1: while slowly adding players that I might necessarily have believed in. Like, hey, Shay,
[18:30] Speaker 1: just wanted to let you know, we got Isaiah Joe. Word?
[18:35] Speaker 2: Oh, oh.
[18:36] Speaker 1: Okay. Like, I don't know what I would have done.
[18:38] Speaker 4: We got a Wiggins.
[18:39] Speaker 2: Not that Wiggins.
[18:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Wiggins is coming. That would have been it.
[18:41] Speaker 1: We got Wiggins. Where?
[18:43] Speaker 4: Hell.
[18:43] Speaker 1: Well, you know. But, like, at this point, I look
[18:48] Speaker 1: at this roster, and I look at it up and down,
[18:51] Speaker 1: and I see a dude that played in a game
[18:53] Speaker 1: seven with a ducktail. And before he had a ducktail,
[18:59] Speaker 1: he had a shack. Because he's from Dallas.
[19:02] Speaker 3: Yes.
[19:04] Speaker 1: I keep trying to tell y'all about Dallas. And a
[19:07] Speaker 1: lot of y'all think it's just because I'm from Houston.
[19:10] Speaker 1: It's not because I'm from Houston. It's because they wear
[19:13] Speaker 1: shags and ducktails in 2025. A dude with a ducktail
[19:18] Speaker 1: or a shag walked in and Shea Gilders did not say,
[19:21] Speaker 1: get me the hell out of here. Because I'm going
[19:23] Speaker 1: to tell you right now, if I'm in the spot
[19:24] Speaker 1: and the dude shows up with a ducktail, we're leaving.
[19:28] Speaker 1: That's how dedicated that man was to winning. He said, no, no, no,
[19:31] Speaker 1: we can keep this going. We can do this. And
[19:35] Speaker 1: they did. They're going to be good for a really, really,
[19:40] Speaker 1: really long time. Everybody young, man. Even the damn coach
[19:45] Speaker 1: is young. The coach is born in 1985. As much
[19:47] Speaker 1: as I've talked about, I believe that this league is
[19:52] Speaker 1: about a dynasty saga and the NBA has ruined the
[19:54] Speaker 1: potential for a dynasty. Sam Presti, who ironically, when the
[19:58] Speaker 1: 2011-2012 CBA came out, that was supposed to break up
[20:03] Speaker 1: the big market teams, actually broke up the Oklahoma City Thunder.
[20:09] Speaker 1: This guy... has apparently overcome. All the things that are
[20:14] Speaker 1: meant to tear down a team is good. They earned this.
[20:18] Speaker 1: They got it. I don't know how much I like
[20:21] Speaker 1: them as a team, and that's the best part. The
[20:23] Speaker 1: more people watch them, the more they will develop emotional
[20:26] Speaker 1: feelings about them.
[20:28] Speaker 4: Especially after they ruined everyone's sports movie moment for the Pacers.
[20:33] Speaker 1: Speaking of which... I do not know if I have
[20:44] Speaker 1: ever felt more about a team like you can never
[20:51] Speaker 1: count them out like I did about these Pacers. And
[20:56] Speaker 1: that's particularly interesting for a team where, I mean, Pascal
[21:02] Speaker 1: Siakam being your number two player is, I mean, that's
[21:06] Speaker 1: not a bad thing to be able to say. I mean,
[21:08] Speaker 1: I've already seen a team win a championship if Siakam
[21:10] Speaker 1: is the number two player. Whoever you want to call
[21:12] Speaker 1: their number three, that's where it's like, oh, okay, I guess.
[21:19] Speaker 1: But never at any point while they were down big
[21:22] Speaker 1: in the double digits in the third, down pretty big
[21:25] Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, never thought they were out of it.
[21:28] Speaker 1: Down 12 with like four minutes left, never thought that
[21:32] Speaker 1: they were out of it. Never at any point did
[21:34] Speaker 1: I feel that way about them. And that was even
[21:37] Speaker 1: with the particular circumstances that they were under In game seven,
[21:41] Speaker 1: I just can't think of a team that I came
[21:44] Speaker 1: away from respecting more than I did that particular team
[21:49] Speaker 1: in that particular makeup, especially given that they brought it
[21:53] Speaker 1: like that after the Halliburton injury. Now, I had more
[21:59] Speaker 1: than a few people mentioned to me during the game
[22:03] Speaker 1: when they saw Halliburton hit the ground that, quote, I
[22:08] Speaker 1: called it, unquote. I did not call. I want to
[22:11] Speaker 1: be very clear about this. I did not predict this
[22:14] Speaker 1: would happen. I did not think this would happen. I
[22:17] Speaker 1: damn sure hope it wouldn't happen. The thing that I
[22:20] Speaker 1: said was maybe I'm a little scarred because after the
[22:25] Speaker 1: Kevin Durant play with calf strain, I associate the calf strain.
[22:31] Speaker 1: with being right like one train stop away from the
[22:36] Speaker 1: Achilles tear but I didn't know enough to know if
[22:39] Speaker 1: that were actually true I've seen enough Ryan. What is,
[22:44] Speaker 1: what is a point two is a trend and I'm
[22:47] Speaker 1: taking it way past tree.
[22:48] Speaker 4: Yeah. We, I saw a tweet that was like, we're
[22:51] Speaker 4: going to, I'm going to start mentally treating, uh, capturing
[22:54] Speaker 4: in the NBA, like concussions in the NFL.
[22:56] Speaker 1: Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. How many fingers am I holding up?
[23:01] Speaker 4: It's just so tough. Cause you don't, It's just the
[23:06] Speaker 4: image of Kevin Durant holding his leg is also fresh
[23:08] Speaker 4: in his mind. When you talk about people calling it,
[23:10] Speaker 4: people want to predict the worst-case scenario because they want
[23:13] Speaker 4: to be right, right?
[23:14] Speaker 1: Yes.
[23:16] Speaker 4: But it still didn't make it any easier to watch.
[23:18] Speaker 1: Well, especially because just like the Kevin Durant game, which was,
[23:22] Speaker 1: I believe, game five in the NBA Finals in 2019.
[23:28] Speaker 1: It was game four or game five. I can't remember which.
[23:31] Speaker 1: But he was on fire.
[23:33] Speaker 2: Yes.
[23:34] Speaker 1: It was game four. It was game four because the
[23:36] Speaker 1: game was in Toronto. He was on fire that game.
[23:41] Speaker 1: And then he just crumpled into a heap. But also
[23:44] Speaker 1: remember this about the Kevin Durant game. He missed time
[23:48] Speaker 1: in that postseason.
[23:48] Speaker 4: About a month. Yeah, yeah.
[23:50] Speaker 1: Like, he missed a long time. Halliburton was trying to
[23:53] Speaker 1: play straight through this. Okay?
[23:56] Speaker 4: And was effective in game six.
[23:58] Speaker 1: He was, but that isn't the point, right?
[24:00] Speaker 5: Like.
[24:01] Speaker 1: We are not in a place, at least from what
[24:04] Speaker 1: I have seen, where the question is about the blame
[24:08] Speaker 1: game on this. I think the case was a little
[24:12] Speaker 1: bit different with Durant, especially since he was going to
[24:15] Speaker 1: be a free agent and we all felt pretty confident
[24:17] Speaker 1: he wasn't coming back to Golden State. It felt like
[24:20] Speaker 1: they were ringing the last drops out of the rag.
[24:22] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Before they got done with
[24:24] Speaker 1: them and that that felt a little bit unseemly. Of course,
[24:28] Speaker 1: it would have been pretty cool to be able to
[24:29] Speaker 1: get some insights from Bob Myers, former general manager of
[24:32] Speaker 1: the Warriors, at the halftime show as he was there
[24:35] Speaker 1: and had a role in the Kevin Durant decision, given
[24:38] Speaker 1: what happened to Halliburton. Inexplicably, ESPN didn't give us anything
[24:42] Speaker 1: about that. Like. I can only assume that Bob Myers
[24:45] Speaker 1: didn't give us anything. This is like that time Drew
[24:48] Speaker 1: Brees ran away from the set when John Gruden called
[24:53] Speaker 1: DeMar Smith some variety of a big-lipped African-American. I know
[24:57] Speaker 1: that John Gruden said it didn't have anything to do
[24:59] Speaker 1: with him being African-American, but fuck out of here, cuz.
[25:02] Speaker 1: This one felt tragic. The Durant one felt like it
[25:06] Speaker 1: just had a lot more surrounding it. I don't know
[25:09] Speaker 1: if I had evolved in the way that I look
[25:12] Speaker 1: at things since that. And now I look at it
[25:15] Speaker 1: with Halliburton where I think I think this is it.
[25:20] Speaker 1: I think I'm a little less cynical about these things
[25:22] Speaker 1: than I used to be and that I am operating
[25:26] Speaker 1: in this case on an assumption that Halliburton made an
[25:30] Speaker 1: informed decision. and decided to, this is his chance to
[25:35] Speaker 1: win a championship, and he decided he was willing to
[25:37] Speaker 1: go for it. And I think that in the 20-something
[25:40] Speaker 1: years that I've been doing this job, I have a
[25:43] Speaker 1: better understanding of athletes and what they're willing to do
[25:49] Speaker 1: to get it. And I am willing to bet at
[25:53] Speaker 1: this point that if you ask Halliburton 20 years from
[25:55] Speaker 1: now whether he would have done that, he'll probably say yes.
[25:59] Speaker 1: And I could be wrong, but that is informing the
[26:01] Speaker 1: way I look at it. But it still was tragic.
[26:04] Speaker 1: And as soon as he's laid out on the ground
[26:06] Speaker 1: face first, I have not seen the details of the replay,
[26:09] Speaker 1: by the way, because I don't do that. My brother
[26:11] Speaker 1: saw it and was like, yep, there it is right there.
[26:13] Speaker 1: You can see it. We all knew exactly what it
[26:15] Speaker 1: was when he laid down. We knew what it was
[26:17] Speaker 1: when he started crying because an Achilles tear is not
[26:20] Speaker 1: one that takes a lot to diagnose. In fact, we
[26:21] Speaker 1: have not even gotten an official word as I say this.
[26:24] Speaker 1: His daddy told Lisa Salters it was an Achilles tear,
[26:27] Speaker 1: which I don't think was the most responsible thing for
[26:29] Speaker 1: anybody involved to do. But we're all pretty confident that
[26:35] Speaker 1: that is what happened.
[26:36] Speaker 4: They're testing for severity, not the injury.
[26:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, and dude, This is another one, man. Three star
[26:45] Speaker 1: borderline superstar guys have torn ACLs in the last, excuse me,
[26:50] Speaker 1: Achilles in the last three months. Dame Lillard, Jason Tatum,
[26:55] Speaker 1: and now Tyrese Halliburton. Lillard is at an Achilles tear
[27:00] Speaker 1: age in the ways that we have thought of Achilles tears.
[27:05] Speaker 1: We talked about this with Tom Haberstroh, who had mentioned
[27:08] Speaker 1: this spate of Achilles tears that we had seen. But
[27:12] Speaker 1: the idea of seeing a 25 year old face first
[27:16] Speaker 1: on the ground with an Achilles tear. Don't forget this one. Ryan,
[27:20] Speaker 1: Luka Doncic was dealing with a calf strain this year
[27:23] Speaker 1: with the pushing to get him back out there. I
[27:26] Speaker 1: bet you Nico would have started doing press conferences.
[27:31] Speaker 4: You could have all of a sudden seen a long
[27:33] Speaker 4: media podcast tour if Luka got hurt.
[27:35] Speaker 1: If that would have happened.
[27:37] Speaker 4: Between defense winning championships and Luka turning his Achilles, we've
[27:40] Speaker 4: heard a lot more from Nico Harrison.
[27:41] Speaker 1: Nico would have put out the most heartfelt tweet. He'd
[27:45] Speaker 1: have sent that man flowers. He'd have done the whole nine,
[27:48] Speaker 1: but he'd have been like, I told y'all. But Is
[27:54] Speaker 1: this is this what the NBA is going to be?
[27:58] Speaker 1: With all these guys and all these miles. And I
[28:00] Speaker 1: was talking to a guy who worked in college basketball
[28:03] Speaker 1: after we had done the thing before about these Achilles tears.
[28:07] Speaker 1: And the point that he made was. He said the
[28:10] Speaker 1: issue isn't so much that guys play more basketball now
[28:14] Speaker 1: than they used to. He's like, the difference is they
[28:16] Speaker 1: play more basketball in gyms. than they used to, right?
[28:19] Speaker 1: Because if they weren't playing all these AAU games, they
[28:22] Speaker 1: would have been playing on the street or playing in
[28:24] Speaker 1: local runs because basketball players play basketball. That's what they do, right?
[28:28] Speaker 1: That's where it would have gone. Where he said he
[28:31] Speaker 1: thinks the mileage really comes from and where it truly
[28:33] Speaker 1: becomes a discussion is in all the time they spend
[28:37] Speaker 1: working with trainers and how hard it is. These guys
[28:41] Speaker 1: are used to not having off-seasons. Just a couple of
[28:44] Speaker 1: days ago, a good friend of mine came up here
[28:46] Speaker 1: because his son had a basketball game. His son is
[28:50] Speaker 1: a top 100 recruit. And the young homie... School year over,
[28:56] Speaker 1: like they still play, right? It's June. The school's still
[29:00] Speaker 1: playing school games. There's like the early summer. The schools
[29:04] Speaker 1: keep playing now, like April, May, like, you know, past
[29:07] Speaker 1: the regular season. Then you get into AAU season. The
[29:10] Speaker 1: last time I saw my man, he was here. It
[29:12] Speaker 1: was like late September, early October. They were already playing
[29:16] Speaker 1: basketball again. And so what the guy was telling me
[29:19] Speaker 1: is that the hardest thing for him was It's getting
[29:22] Speaker 1: the guys, okay, take a little break. Don't be in
[29:24] Speaker 1: the gym. All they do is go in the gym
[29:26] Speaker 1: because the brain is now so focused on get to
[29:29] Speaker 1: the NBA, get to the NBA. The understanding of the
[29:32] Speaker 1: level of competition around them is so strong. And it's like,
[29:35] Speaker 1: once you know these other cats are in the gym, well,
[29:37] Speaker 1: now I gotta be in the gym they putting in
[29:39] Speaker 1: these hours and they all and everybody's putting it on
[29:41] Speaker 1: instagram so you see it and you're and you're recognizing
[29:44] Speaker 1: at every moment this is how much you have to
[29:46] Speaker 1: play and i am not convinced that part is true
[29:48] Speaker 1: but this is how much that you have to do
[29:50] Speaker 1: and everything else and so these guys have an extraordinary
[29:54] Speaker 1: number of miles on.
[29:55] Speaker 4: Them and just you know the best way to uh
[29:58] Speaker 4: Keep the business of the season going is to extend
[30:00] Speaker 4: the season. If there's no off season, you can charge
[30:04] Speaker 4: for 52 weeks of training instead of 26 weeks.
[30:05] Speaker 6: That's right.
[30:06] Speaker 1: That's right. And so it goes and it goes and
[30:08] Speaker 1: it goes. And we just watch. Because Indiana, everything that
[30:11] Speaker 1: we were saying about why can't the Thunder keep this
[30:14] Speaker 1: going for a long time, it was the same feeling
[30:16] Speaker 1: about Indiana. Why can't Indiana– keep this going a long time?
[30:21] Speaker 1: And now the answer is because their best player just
[30:22] Speaker 1: tore his Achilles. Now, it is possible that they've come
[30:26] Speaker 1: a long way on these Achilles tears. I mean, Kevin
[30:28] Speaker 1: Durant tore his Achilles six years ago. Two years after
[30:32] Speaker 1: he tore his Achilles, he was playing well enough, maybe
[30:36] Speaker 1: some of the best basketball we'd ever seen Kevin Durant
[30:38] Speaker 1: play to lead a team to a championship if he
[30:40] Speaker 1: wore a shoe one size smaller.
[30:43] Speaker 3: Right.
[30:43] Speaker 1: Like we saw all of those things. But man, it
[30:46] Speaker 1: hurt to watch it, man, especially now. Like, you know,
[30:48] Speaker 1: I'm in an older age or whatever. Even though I'm
[30:51] Speaker 1: not looking at it from the standpoint of somebody to blame, man,
[30:54] Speaker 1: it hurt to watch. It was a difficult thing to
[30:56] Speaker 1: view and to see and to see that emotion and
[30:59] Speaker 1: see them carry him off the floor and everything else.
[31:04] Speaker 1: I'm going to say this one, too, and we'll throw
[31:05] Speaker 1: it out there. And I mean, we could be general.
[31:08] Speaker 1: I don't think they're the only people who did this.
[31:11] Speaker 1: But both Perk and Stephen A had a lot to
[31:15] Speaker 1: say about Halliburton on the if you can walk, you
[31:18] Speaker 1: have to play. I don't say those kinds of things
[31:22] Speaker 1: because I don't even want to do a show with
[31:24] Speaker 1: a headache. You know what I'm saying? I ain't the guy.
[31:28] Speaker 1: I'm not the one to do that. But I do
[31:30] Speaker 1: think that this is one of those moments that makes
[31:33] Speaker 1: us or requires us often to be a little bit
[31:35] Speaker 1: careful about what we say other people should do with
[31:40] Speaker 1: their injuries. If you can walk, you can play. Ryan,
[31:44] Speaker 1: that's not terribly different than the logic that sent people
[31:47] Speaker 1: out there with concussions.
[31:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we talk a lot about it. You
[31:54] Speaker 4: mentioned that like his lack of regret, like all, all
[31:59] Speaker 4: athletes are in that position because they, they will always
[32:02] Speaker 4: make the decision to play through it.
[32:03] Speaker 1: Yes.
[32:04] Speaker 4: And when I think the similarity of it's hard about
[32:07] Speaker 4: concussions is when is it the right time for it?
[32:10] Speaker 4: the player or the organization to make that decision. That's
[32:12] Speaker 4: something we haven't figured out with calf strength yet.
[32:14] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[32:14] Speaker 1: Well, one thing about concussions and I've, I've said this
[32:17] Speaker 1: a while ago is that we treat that differently because
[32:20] Speaker 1: we treat the idea of like the dementia and everything else. Like, right. We,
[32:24] Speaker 1: we prioritize the head and the brain, which makes perfect sense.
[32:27] Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it's a bad idea. I'm just
[32:29] Speaker 1: saying the other stuff hurts too. And the other stuff
[32:32] Speaker 1: is why people take pain pills.
[32:34] Speaker 4: Right?
[32:34] Speaker 1: Like with football players. These are all injuries, right? They're
[32:38] Speaker 1: all bad. They're all miles that guys are going to
[32:41] Speaker 1: have to take later. And so... We look at playing
[32:46] Speaker 1: through those injuries differently than we look at playing through
[32:48] Speaker 1: head injuries. And I understand it. But we just watch
[32:50] Speaker 1: somebody endure one of the most severe injuries that you
[32:53] Speaker 1: could possibly have. And he did it in spite of
[32:57] Speaker 1: the fact that what of what appears to me to
[32:59] Speaker 1: have been an obvious warning sign. Now, again, I bet
[33:02] Speaker 1: if you ask him to do it over again, he
[33:04] Speaker 1: probably would. But that is a decision for him to make.
[33:07] Speaker 1: It is not one for me to encourage. So I
[33:11] Speaker 1: wish that young man the best. He had one of
[33:13] Speaker 1: the best post seasons that I can remember. One of
[33:14] Speaker 1: the most clutch post seasons that I can remember. He
[33:17] Speaker 1: helped get a team that none of us thought of
[33:19] Speaker 1: in this context to a game seven of the NBA finals.
[33:21] Speaker 1: They had a great chance to win that game before
[33:24] Speaker 1: he got hurt. He did that. And that is not
[33:28] Speaker 1: going to be something that gets him solace for a
[33:30] Speaker 1: very long time. And I understand that point. But man,
[33:34] Speaker 1: you're not going to be able to say you came
[33:35] Speaker 1: away from this postseason without a serious respect for Tyrese Halliburton.
[33:39] Speaker 1: Stop calling that man Steve Earth. That's the father of kill.
[33:48] Speaker 1: Let me tell you about Z-Biotics pre-alcohol probiotic. Z-Biotics pre-alcohol
[33:54] Speaker 1: probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It
[33:59] Speaker 1: was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
[34:03] Speaker 1: Here's how it works. When you drink, alcohol gets converted
[34:06] Speaker 1: into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It's a buildup
[34:09] Speaker 1: of this byproduct, not dehydration, that's to blame for rough
[34:14] Speaker 1: days after drinking. Pre-alcohol produces an enzyme to break this
[34:18] Speaker 1: byproduct down. Just remember to make pre-alcohol your first drink
[34:22] Speaker 1: of the night. Drink responsibly and you'll feel your best tomorrow.
[34:27] Speaker 1: Summer is here, which means more opportunities to celebrate the
[34:30] Speaker 1: warm weather. Before that backyard barbecue brew, glass of pinot
[34:34] Speaker 1: watching the sunset at the beach, or cocktail by the campfire,
[34:38] Speaker 1: don't forget your Z Biotics pre-alcohol. Drink one before drinking
[34:42] Speaker 1: and wake up feeling great and ready to take on
[34:44] Speaker 1: the next day in all that summer has to offer.

[36:29] Speaker 1: That's Cash App.
[36:36] Speaker 2: All right.
[36:37] Speaker 1: We are not doing, if you haven't heard this go
[36:39] Speaker 1: around on the show, and the reason is, and it's Honestly,
[36:42] Speaker 1: the first time this has ever happened. We had so
[36:45] Speaker 1: much happen that we got to kind of skip out
[36:48] Speaker 1: on that for this week. Don't worry. We'll have weird
[36:50] Speaker 1: stories for you soon. The morning of Game 7 of
[36:55] Speaker 1: the NBA Finals, the word got out that Kevin Durant
[36:58] Speaker 1: had been traded to the Houston Rockets. Damn, I wish
[37:01] Speaker 1: I had gone to Fanatics Fest. I went on Friday.
[37:05] Speaker 1: And Fanatics Fest, and if you don't know this, like
[37:07] Speaker 1: the company Fanatics, it's like their big– Expo show. They
[37:11] Speaker 1: have it at the Javits Center in New York City.
[37:14] Speaker 1: It looked like Comic-Con for athletes from the video. Yes,
[37:17] Speaker 1: and it felt like Comic-Con. Oh, goodness. It got a
[37:20] Speaker 1: little weird in there.
[37:22] Speaker 4: You saw some of the videos.
[37:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, I was there. It was a little strange. They
[37:27] Speaker 1: get a lot of people to show up.
[37:29] Speaker 4: I'm sure the demographics were about 98% dudes.
[37:34] Speaker 1: Yes, dudes and very kind women, right? And so, you know,
[37:39] Speaker 1: They do the thing that is the model for content everywhere,
[37:42] Speaker 1: which is we just get famous people on stage to
[37:44] Speaker 1: talk to each other. You know what I mean? Like
[37:47] Speaker 1: there's a lot of panels. There's just a lot of
[37:49] Speaker 1: famous people talking to each other, which I don't necessarily
[37:52] Speaker 1: find to be the most interesting thing. But I saw
[37:55] Speaker 1: that my good friend Taylor Rooks was going to be
[37:57] Speaker 1: interviewing Kevin Durant on Sunday. And I thought about going,
[38:01] Speaker 1: but I've been working on a bunch of other stuff.
[38:03] Speaker 1: So I hadn't really been able to make it over there. Right.
[38:06] Speaker 1: And then, of course, the word drops that this trade
[38:09] Speaker 1: has been made while Kevin Durant is on stage. Now,
[38:13] Speaker 1: first of all, if you think Kevin Durant found out
[38:17] Speaker 1: on stage, you don't understand how things work. He may
[38:20] Speaker 1: have found out it was official while he was on stage.
[38:25] Speaker 1: But they did not trade Kevin Durant to Houston without
[38:28] Speaker 1: him having any idea that this was going down. I
[38:31] Speaker 1: feel pretty confident saying that Kevin Durant was involved in
[38:34] Speaker 1: whatever the moves were because what nobody wants to do
[38:37] Speaker 1: is to acquire a disgruntled Kevin Durant. We've seen that move.
[38:42] Speaker 1: You can win, but you're not going to like it. Okay? No.
[38:46] Speaker 1: He was up on what game was going to be
[38:47] Speaker 1: on that trade. Bottom line is Phoenix had no leverage.
[38:52] Speaker 1: Two years ago, Phoenix traded four first-round picks and a
[38:54] Speaker 1: bunch of other stuff. Was it four first-round picks? McHale, Bridges, Cam, Johnson. Like,
[39:00] Speaker 1: it was a haul for Kevin Durant.
[39:02] Speaker 4: Yeah, just remember, McHale, Bridges, who went for four first-round picks,
[39:07] Speaker 4: and they got traded for five first-round picks.
[39:09] Speaker 1: Yes, that is a great point. Yeah. This trade was
[39:13] Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft, Dylan Brooks. Jalen Green,
[39:19] Speaker 1: five second-round picks in order to get Kevin Durant. And
[39:23] Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft was Phoenix getting
[39:24] Speaker 1: its own pick back. What had been long forecast, and
[39:27] Speaker 1: Brian Woodhorse called this trade a year ago, that The
[39:31] Speaker 1: Rockets were getting Phoenix's got a pick, got some of
[39:34] Speaker 1: Phoenix's picks from the Nets because Phoenix is in a
[39:38] Speaker 1: position where they can't even tank to get better because
[39:40] Speaker 1: they don't have control over their picks. And so the
[39:43] Speaker 1: Rockets went to get Phoenix's picks because they're more valuable
[39:46] Speaker 1: to Phoenix than they are to anybody else. And then
[39:49] Speaker 1: Phoenix could perhaps then get those back in or in
[39:52] Speaker 1: the Rockets could use that to get Kevin Durant. They
[39:54] Speaker 1: managed to get Kevin Durant without having to give up
[39:58] Speaker 1: those picks. That is crazy. But it's because Phoenix set
[40:03] Speaker 1: themselves up in such a way that everybody knew they
[40:06] Speaker 1: had to move him. They had ultimately no leverage. The
[40:11] Speaker 1: question was just going to be whether there were teams
[40:14] Speaker 1: who would be willing to trade for Durant without him
[40:17] Speaker 1: saying he wanted to go there. Minnesota, Durant does not
[40:20] Speaker 1: want to go there. Would you be willing to do
[40:22] Speaker 1: what Masai Ujiri did when he got Kawhi Leonard? I
[40:25] Speaker 1: don't care if you want to come. We're going to
[40:26] Speaker 1: try this for a year and we're going to see
[40:28] Speaker 1: how that goes. Was that something that Minnesota was going
[40:31] Speaker 1: to be willing to do? I think that was the
[40:32] Speaker 1: question that surrounded Durant's camp. Nope. Why don't go to
[40:37] Speaker 1: the Rockets? I think this was a seal for the Rockets.
[40:40] Speaker 1: My best friend from growing up hit me and was like,
[40:42] Speaker 1: why are we giving up all of this? We being
[40:44] Speaker 1: the Rockets, like, why are they giving up all of this?
[40:46] Speaker 1: And I'm like, I didn't think they gave up all
[40:48] Speaker 1: the everything, anything. They gave up Dylan Brooks. OK, they
[40:50] Speaker 1: got Ahmed Thompson. Not that you don't want to have
[40:52] Speaker 1: two very good defensive players, but they got another one
[40:56] Speaker 1: of those that's better. OK, cool. They gave up Jalen Green.
[41:00] Speaker 1: I believe that to be addition by subtraction. I just don't.
[41:04] Speaker 1: I don't think I don't think that young man plays
[41:05] Speaker 1: winning basketball. I just don't. And I don't think Phoenix
[41:08] Speaker 1: thinks that either, because everything we hear is that they're
[41:10] Speaker 1: going to move him to a 13. What 13? Who
[41:13] Speaker 1: the hell trying to do that? Anyway, those five second
[41:18] Speaker 1: round picks, second round picks are, you know, a second
[41:22] Speaker 1: round picks are change.
[41:25] Speaker 3: Right?
[41:25] Speaker 1: Like, hey, man, this will cost you $ 18. Damn, I
[41:29] Speaker 1: only got a $ 20. All right, you want somebody's second-round
[41:32] Speaker 1: picks then?
[41:33] Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
[41:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like $ 1 bills, right? You know what they're like?
[41:37] Speaker 1: They're like when you go to the casino and you
[41:39] Speaker 1: hit for blackjack and blackjack's three to two, but you
[41:42] Speaker 1: did it with some weird number, so they got to
[41:44] Speaker 1: give you a 50-cent piece. Yeah. There, that's what second
[41:48] Speaker 1: round picks are, right? They just gave them a little
[41:51] Speaker 1: change out of their pockets and said they could have
[41:54] Speaker 1: that part. But I don't think the Rockets gave up anything.
[41:57] Speaker 1: And if they are so inclined, they're still in a
[41:59] Speaker 1: position to bring Giannis to the Nigerian ancestral home of America, Houston.
[42:06] Speaker 1: He ain't got to use that funny spelling of his
[42:08] Speaker 1: last name ever again. He come back to Houston, he'll
[42:10] Speaker 1: be back amongst his homies. You know, just hanging out
[42:12] Speaker 1: with engineers all the time. Be right there for him.
[42:15] Speaker 1: And rappers. We got a few of those, too. Shout
[42:17] Speaker 1: out to the homie Toby. The Rockets now. What did
[42:20] Speaker 1: the Rockets not have last postseason? Got to get a shot. Right. Big,
[42:25] Speaker 1: big moment of the game. You need it. What the
[42:26] Speaker 1: Rockets didn't have was a guy to get that shot.
[42:30] Speaker 1: Now they have a guy to get that shot. Huge.
[42:33] Speaker 2: Huge.
[42:34] Speaker 1: Because he'll be able to get that shot for the
[42:35] Speaker 1: rest of his life.
[42:36] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[42:36] Speaker 4: And also they have– they extended their coach, which is
[42:40] Speaker 4: their handle, Sulky KD Insurance. Because you know who is
[42:42] Speaker 4: not interested in Sulky Kevin Durant?
[42:45] Speaker 1: And he's already– look, he's already done it. Yeah. He
[42:49] Speaker 1: may work with him in Brooklyn. He's very aware of
[42:55] Speaker 1: who the guy is that he's getting, and Kevin Durant
[42:57] Speaker 1: likes him. I think for the Rockets, this was great.
[43:03] Speaker 1: Even if they don't get Giannis, I don't think they
[43:09] Speaker 1: gave up anything. Let me tell you the last thing
[43:10] Speaker 1: the Rockets need. The last thing the Rockets need is
[43:12] Speaker 1: the number 10 pick in the draft. In this day
[43:15] Speaker 1: and age, How long is it going to be before
[43:17] Speaker 1: that number 10 pick in the draft is contributing to
[43:20] Speaker 1: helping you win? Like they finished, what was it, number
[43:24] Speaker 1: two in the conference? They should be playing a win
[43:28] Speaker 1: now sort of game. Right now, my hot take is
[43:32] Speaker 1: if Shingun's not going to be your guy guy. And
[43:35] Speaker 1: I think there's a ceiling on how good you're going
[43:36] Speaker 1: to be with Shingun being that dude. I go trade
[43:39] Speaker 1: him to get somebody else. Like I think somebody with
[43:40] Speaker 1: the type of game he has uniqueness of it. If
[43:42] Speaker 1: you're not going to treat him like Jokic, then go
[43:45] Speaker 1: go get somebody else. Like he will be the first
[43:46] Speaker 1: thing he'll be on the first thing to Milwaukee. I think,
[43:51] Speaker 1: if they trade for Giannis. He'll be up there wearing,
[43:55] Speaker 1: what's my man's name? The Ilya Sova jersey, putting on
[43:58] Speaker 1: for the home team. You know what I'm saying? I
[44:00] Speaker 1: believe they're from the same place. But that's where I
[44:04] Speaker 1: think that goes. But I don't think Durant's going to
[44:09] Speaker 1: be guarding anybody. I think that at some point, all
[44:11] Speaker 1: the years do matter. But he'll be able to get
[44:15] Speaker 1: that shot, I firmly believe. for the rest of his life.
[44:21] Speaker 1: The Rockets made this happen, and it continues in a long,
[44:27] Speaker 1: long line of the Houston Rockets getting superstar players or
[44:33] Speaker 1: some players of that ilk. Even if you take it
[44:37] Speaker 1: back to guys like Calvin Murphy and Rudy Tom Jonovich.
[44:41] Speaker 1: Rudy Jonovich was the number two pick in the draft.
[44:43] Speaker 1: Calvin Murphy was a college superstar. That's why he is
[44:46] Speaker 1: in the Basketball Hall of Fame. But you go after
[44:49] Speaker 1: that and I can start rattling off names from year
[44:52] Speaker 1: to year. Rick Barry, Moses Malone, Ralph Sampson, Akeem Olajuwon,
[45:00] Speaker 1: Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, Scotty Pippen, Steve Francis, Yao Ming,
[45:07] Speaker 1: Tracy McGrady, James Harden, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Like, it
[45:14] Speaker 1: goes and it goes and it goes. This is a
[45:18] Speaker 1: franchise that has always been about having big names. And
[45:24] Speaker 1: they just went and got one more. Now we're going
[45:27] Speaker 1: to find out just how much he truly has left.
[45:36] Speaker 4: All right, we got an oldie but a goodie. Tell
[45:38] Speaker 4: us about that time you went up against a professional
[45:41] Speaker 4: athlete coming up. We got some good ones. Here's the
[45:43] Speaker 4: first one.
[45:45] Speaker 2: What's up, Bo? This is Eric and Andy, man. Your
[45:49] Speaker 2: prompt was about the time you ran up against somebody
[45:53] Speaker 2: who would end up being a big star. So I
[45:55] Speaker 2: was a pretty good football player in Indiana, man, decent athlete,
[45:59] Speaker 2: doing my own thing. And I thought, you know, my
[46:01] Speaker 2: senior year, All-State, I'd test my mettle against the best.
[46:05] Speaker 2: So I go to a camp in Ohio that draws
[46:08] Speaker 2: people from all across the Midwest. I'm offensive lineman. We're
[46:11] Speaker 2: out there doing our thing. I looked the part. I'm
[46:14] Speaker 2: a decent-sized guy, pretty athletic, doing our thing. So we'll
[46:18] Speaker 2: get to the one-on-one drills, and I'm going to hold
[46:21] Speaker 2: my own. There's one dude, you know, he tested me.
[46:24] Speaker 2: I can't get to my spot to cut him off.
[46:26] Speaker 2: He's a linebacker, and he keeps getting there a step
[46:29] Speaker 2: before me, and he's starting to realize he got me.
[46:33] Speaker 2: He's in my head a little bit, so he's taught
[46:35] Speaker 2: me a couple times. So we get into, like, the
[46:37] Speaker 2: Oklahoma drills and the one-on-one drills, that kind of thing.
[46:40] Speaker 2: And every time I get up against this dude, it's
[46:44] Speaker 2: a battle. But he's starting to, like, it's becoming clear
[46:47] Speaker 2: to me that he actually knows what's up. So he
[46:51] Speaker 2: thumps me a couple times. I get up and do
[46:53] Speaker 2: my thing. Everybody's cheering. Everybody's cool. But at one point,
[46:59] Speaker 2: we get up there, man. He didn't do this to me, man.
[47:02] Speaker 2: We get up there. We do our thing. I'm standing up,
[47:04] Speaker 2: and he just decided, man– He just mushed me down,
[47:08] Speaker 2: pushed me down, goes around me. And at that point,
[47:11] Speaker 2: my Division I football dream died. I realized it. I'm like,
[47:15] Speaker 2: you know what? I can hustle a little bit, but
[47:17] Speaker 2: these dudes might be a little bigger than me, just
[47:19] Speaker 2: a step faster, stronger, and maybe I'll go someplace where
[47:22] Speaker 2: I can get some playing time. By the way, that
[47:26] Speaker 2: brother's name was Thomas Pepper Johnson. All right, boy, I'll
[47:30] Speaker 2: catch you next time, man. Peace.
[47:32] Speaker 1: First of all, He sounds a lot younger than I
[47:34] Speaker 1: thought he was to be throwing out Pepper Johnson. Ryan,
[47:37] Speaker 1: are you even familiar with Pepper Johnson?
[47:39] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[47:39] Speaker 4: I mean, I had to look it up to confirm, but, yeah,
[47:42] Speaker 4: I mean, I certainly didn't see him play.
[47:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, Pepper Johnson played with LT.
[47:48] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[47:49] Speaker 1: Yes, and you know he's old school. We ain't been
[47:51] Speaker 1: calling people Pepper for a long time.
[47:53] Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't know they still made those.
[47:55] Speaker 1: No, no, we might make a Pep every now and then,
[47:57] Speaker 1: but a Pepper? No, that's new or old.
[48:00] Speaker 4: All right, here's the next one.
[48:03] Speaker 2: What's up, Bomani?
[48:04] Speaker 6: This is David from L.A. This story takes place, I'm
[48:09] Speaker 6: calling about the time where you matched up with a
[48:12] Speaker 6: future professional. And I played a little Juco ball in Illinois.
[48:18] Speaker 6: And I'm coming off ACL, and we're about to have
[48:22] Speaker 6: new teammates. And one of these new teammates, he brings
[48:27] Speaker 6: his younger brother. I was like, oh, yeah, younger brother
[48:31] Speaker 6: just got a scholarship, played D1 ball. And in my head,
[48:34] Speaker 6: I'm like, I already been playing college ball, so I'm
[48:38] Speaker 6: about to welcome him to college ball, to the wonderful
[48:40] Speaker 6: world of G-Cup.
[48:42] Speaker 2: So that's what you know.
[48:44] Speaker 6: And plus, I had been seeing him on the local
[48:47] Speaker 6: news in high school, just dunking on people.
[48:50] Speaker 2: So I was like, all right, whatever, man. I'm going
[48:53] Speaker 2: to show.
[48:53] Speaker 6: This young boy what it is. And plus, I got
[48:57] Speaker 6: something to prove because I'm coming off an ACL injury.
[49:00] Speaker 6: The first time, mind you. So anyway, you know, there's
[49:04] Speaker 6: a switch and I end up guarding him. He goes
[49:07] Speaker 6: right to the post and he calls for the ball.
[49:09] Speaker 6: So now I'm like, eh, ain't no bounce in the house.
[49:12] Speaker 2: What you think this is?
[49:13] Speaker 7: Now, I'm all a 6'1. He was taller than 6'1,
[49:16] Speaker 7: but still, it was offensive to me. So I said,
[49:20] Speaker 7: all right, well, you know, he's going to jump in
[49:21] Speaker 7: the air to get the ball as soon as he lands,
[49:25] Speaker 7: forearm to the back. You know, I ain't going to
[49:26] Speaker 7: hurt him, but I'm going to meet him when he drops,
[49:29] Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, when he comes back down
[49:30] Speaker 7: with some physicality. And sure enough, you know, they threw
[49:34] Speaker 7: him the ball. He jumped to get it.
[49:36] Speaker 1: He landed.
[49:37] Speaker 6: I hit him with the forearms. It's just his plan,
[49:41] Speaker 6: only he slithered and spun off of it so quick.
[49:46] Speaker 7: To where, you know, sometimes you gotta, you can't.
[49:49] Speaker 6: Just follow him. You have to go the other way
[49:51] Speaker 6: to recover. And by that time, he was already in
[49:55] Speaker 6: the air.
[49:56] Speaker 2: And I got boomed on.
[49:59] Speaker 6: And that future NBA Hall of Famer was Dwayne Wade.
[50:05] Speaker 2: He didn't ever since. But Love the show, bro.
[50:11] Speaker 1: First of all, I didn't know y'all said boom in Chicago.
[50:13] Speaker 1: I feel like that's a Texas way. Somebody got boomed on.
[50:16] Speaker 1: He said, I thought I got him. I've been playing
[50:19] Speaker 1: junior college basketball.
[50:21] Speaker 4: I love the visual.
[50:22] Speaker 2: That's a different man.
[50:24] Speaker 1: Yeah. He was in the Matrix.
[50:29] Speaker 4: Getting turned around like he's Roadrunner.
[50:33] Speaker 1: Where'd he go? Where'd he go? Oh, that's funny.
[50:37] Speaker 2: All right.
[50:38] Speaker 4: Here's our last one.
[50:39] Speaker 2: Mr.
[50:40] Speaker 3: Jones, I've been waiting for this one.
[50:42] Speaker 2: I grew up in Pensacola, Florida.
[50:45] Speaker 3: Now, you probably know about five, six people, famous athletes
[50:51] Speaker 3: from Pensacola, Florida. Now, my dad used to take me.
[50:56] Speaker 3: This is when my freshman year, probably around 2011. My
[51:00] Speaker 3: dad used to take me on base after school so
[51:02] Speaker 3: I can play open runs on the baby base. just
[51:08] Speaker 3: to go out there, give me something to do and
[51:10] Speaker 3: just play a ball with the Navy dudes, you know,
[51:13] Speaker 3: get some game, get better. Um, man, I'm waiting to
[51:18] Speaker 3: go in one game. We're waiting around for the next
[51:22] Speaker 3: game to start. And I'm on somebody's five. Now they
[51:25] Speaker 3: usually don't let the young dude come in, but they
[51:27] Speaker 3: let me in, you know, we win a game. And
[51:30] Speaker 3: then it was like how, uh, Charlie Murphy was talking
[51:36] Speaker 3: about Rick James or somebody with that aura. Here comes
[51:40] Speaker 3: Rory Jones Jr. coming into the gym with his five already.
[51:45] Speaker 3: They're all in Jordan gear.
[51:48] Speaker 2: And they just got next.
[51:50] Speaker 3: They didn't have to wait.
[51:52] Speaker 2: You know, they just got next.
[51:54] Speaker 3: So I'm nervous. These Navy dudes was scared. The youngest
[52:00] Speaker 3: dude and the tallest dude was me. I was probably
[52:04] Speaker 3: 5'9 at the time. I had to guard Roy Jones Jr.
[52:09] Speaker 3: And I don't know if he has YouTube clips of
[52:11] Speaker 3: him playing ball, but I swear to you, play Roy
[52:16] Speaker 3: Jones Jr.
[52:16] Speaker 2: In basketball. His shot looked like Kevin.
[52:19] Speaker 3: Duxworth or something like that. He's pulling up like Steph Curry.
[52:24] Speaker 3: He has a post game, and he was giving me
[52:26] Speaker 3: that work. And every other time if I was doing bad,
[52:30] Speaker 3: they'll switch me off. Nah, I had to get.
[52:33] Speaker 2: It the whole game.
[52:36] Speaker 3: At one point in the game, we both went out.
[52:39] Speaker 3: We both went up for a rebound. And he accidentally, like,
[52:43] Speaker 3: nudged me in my face. Not a hard elbow, but
[52:46] Speaker 3: a little one. And my lens and my glasses fell out.
[52:49] Speaker 3: And he couldn't be nicer. But I was more mad
[52:53] Speaker 3: that I had to guard him because they were some
[52:55] Speaker 3: chumps about that.
[52:57] Speaker 2: But, yeah.
[52:58] Speaker 3: If y'all in Pensacola or wherever you see Roy Jones Jr.,
[53:01] Speaker 3: play pig with him. Just play him. You'll see what
[53:05] Speaker 3: I'm talking about.
[53:07] Speaker 2: Thanks for money.
[53:08] Speaker 3: And also, I just want to say whenever I'm feeling down,
[53:12] Speaker 3: the whole ship story brings me up. Peace.
[53:15] Speaker 1: Oh, the whole ship. Brian, one day I'm going to
[53:17] Speaker 1: have to tell you the whole ship. We have a
[53:19] Speaker 1: slow day. I'll tell the whole ship. The whole ship
[53:22] Speaker 1: never fails. But he had to eat the buckets. That's
[53:25] Speaker 1: the words. They made him eat the Roy Jones buckets.
[53:28] Speaker 1: I also love the idea that Roy Jones showed up
[53:30] Speaker 1: with five and they don't wait.
[53:32] Speaker 4: There's very few things that will guarantee you to be
[53:35] Speaker 4: on the voicemails, no matter what is on this. Military
[53:39] Speaker 4: base in Pensacola, pretty high. Walked in like Charlie Murphy
[53:45] Speaker 4: or Prince Story. Almost a guarantee. If you say that
[53:49] Speaker 4: person is Roy Jones, that's an auto selection. That's the
[53:53] Speaker 4: easiest job I had.
[53:54] Speaker 1: I think it worked well. I think it worked well.
[53:56] Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
[53:59] Speaker 1: here on The Right Time. We do this here three

[54:15] Speaker 1: couple of days. Take it easy.
