[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:19] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is Mina Kimes Friday. Mina Kimes for
[0:24] Speaker 1: all things ESPN. What's going on?
[0:27] Speaker 2: Hello.
[0:27] Speaker 1: Wow.
[0:28] Speaker 2: Have I co-opted Foxworth Friday today?
[0:31] Speaker 1: Whoever gets on Friday still gets the presentation, even though
[0:34] Speaker 1: it lacks the alliteration that makes it all, you know,
[0:37] Speaker 1: do the thing. You know what I'm saying?
[0:40] Speaker 2: Can your listeners come up with a Mina name? for me,
[0:42] Speaker 2: I would appreciate that.
[0:44] Speaker 1: All right. I am going to offer this opportunity from
[0:47] Speaker 1: them and I am going to cross my fingers that
[0:50] Speaker 1: they don't embarrass me in front of my friends. Like
[0:53] Speaker 1: this is a, this is, this is a ask the kids.
[0:56] Speaker 2: Okay.
[0:57] Speaker 1: Don't try to make no fool of me. Um, speaking
[1:00] Speaker 1: of being made a fool of, we got a lot
[1:02] Speaker 1: going on here in week two. Um, week two is
[1:05] Speaker 1: always interesting to me though because week two of the
[1:07] Speaker 1: nfl season is not quite like week two of the
[1:09] Speaker 1: college football season which is always terrible because they front
[1:12] Speaker 1: load so many good games and then there's nothing left
[1:15] Speaker 1: like we got a couple sneaking out here and they
[1:17] Speaker 1: gave us super bowl rematch the eagles and the chiefs
[1:22] Speaker 1: and i guess they both had short week me long
[1:25] Speaker 1: weeks because of um playing in the middle of the
[1:27] Speaker 1: week except the chiefs had to come back from Brazil
[1:31] Speaker 1: after getting their asses kicked. Like, is it rut row
[1:34] Speaker 1: zone for the Chiefs if they lose this game? No.
[1:37] Speaker 2: No. I'm not throwing dirt on the Chiefs in week two.
[1:40] Speaker 1: I'm fine.
[1:42] Speaker 2: But it's not going to feel great. The funny thing is,
[1:44] Speaker 2: I think, despite being in the Super Bowl, both of
[1:47] Speaker 2: these teams sort of had underwhelming week ones. I think
[1:51] Speaker 2: with the Eagles, obviously, you can explain a lot of
[1:53] Speaker 2: that away with the Jalen Carter ejection.
[1:57] Speaker 1: However.
[1:58] Speaker 2: Also, it's like, well, that's it? You take out Jalen Carter?
[2:02] Speaker 2: Is his defense no longer– I think that is kind
[2:04] Speaker 2: of a scary feeling for Eagles fans, also seeing what
[2:08] Speaker 2: they knew was a vulnerability all offseason, the second cornerback
[2:11] Speaker 2: position be so glaringly exposed as one. But I think what–
[2:18] Speaker 2: and this is why week one is so funny. Context
[2:20] Speaker 2: is kind of hard to– like you're watching these and
[2:24] Speaker 2: you're thinking, wow, Daniel Jones looks amazing, but is the Dolphins'
[2:26] Speaker 2: defense just cheeks, right?
[2:28] Speaker 1: Right.
[2:29] Speaker 2: I think the Cowboys offense is actually a lot better
[2:30] Speaker 2: than people think. And I think that played into it
[2:32] Speaker 2: as well. So I think the Eagles are going to
[2:33] Speaker 2: bounce back in a big way. I'm a lot more
[2:35] Speaker 2: skeptical about the Chiefs in this one.
[2:36] Speaker 1: All right. I want to stick with the Eagles there
[2:38] Speaker 1: because I think I think the difference in part of
[2:41] Speaker 1: why the Eagles performance, aside from the fact that they won,
[2:45] Speaker 1: wouldn't be quite as disappointing is. I think we all,
[2:48] Speaker 1: at least I did, felt confident saying, even if the
[2:50] Speaker 1: Eagles are better than everybody else, they were going to
[2:52] Speaker 1: be worse this year than they were last year. Like
[2:54] Speaker 1: I heard your man Dano talking about this. They lost
[2:57] Speaker 1: two guys in free agency who got $ 100 million to
[3:00] Speaker 1: play defensive line, right? Like it's just impossible to keep
[3:03] Speaker 1: a team like that together. But then we felt like
[3:05] Speaker 1: the Chiefs got better, right? Now part of it is
[3:08] Speaker 1: Rasheed Rice is going to come back, but he's not back-to-back.
[3:11] Speaker 1: He's just back on the team. Hollywood Brown, a couple
[3:14] Speaker 1: other moves. We thought that they had improved. The Chiefs,
[3:20] Speaker 1: you just pointed to something, and I'm always here to
[3:24] Speaker 1: speak for the underrepresented and the downtrodden, but yes, the
[3:28] Speaker 1: Chiefs have, not the Chiefs, the Eagles. The Eagles have
[3:30] Speaker 1: a problem at number two corner, but I feel like
[3:33] Speaker 1: the solution is right there in the slot, just maybe
[3:37] Speaker 1: a little bit. They don't want to fix the problem
[3:41] Speaker 1: when the man is right there, ready to do it.
[3:44] Speaker 2: They might have to do that. And isn't that always
[3:48] Speaker 2: how history gets made out of necessity is that's when
[3:52] Speaker 2: true racial pioneers step up to.
[3:55] Speaker 1: The plate is when there's no other choice.
[3:57] Speaker 2: There's no other choice. Yeah. Jackie Robinson to Jean could
[4:02] Speaker 2: absolutely play outside.
[4:04] Speaker 1: I don't know though.
[4:05] Speaker 2: Cause he's so good in the slot. I think it's
[4:07] Speaker 2: a matchup thing. You know, if you're playing it, the
[4:12] Speaker 2: thing about to the NFL now is like, slot corner
[4:15] Speaker 2: is no longer like, oh, let's just stick our littlest
[4:17] Speaker 2: worst guy there. It's actually really, really important. Like a
[4:20] Speaker 2: lot of teams play their best receiver in the slot.
[4:22] Speaker 2: So I feel like, you know, you got to be
[4:26] Speaker 2: kind of wary of moving him, especially because he's such
[4:28] Speaker 2: a good nickel. He's so good at tackling. He's so physical.
[4:32] Speaker 2: I think the solution to the Eagles cornerback two problem
[4:36] Speaker 2: is playing the Kansas City Chiefs. I mean, like, right. Like, uh,
[4:42] Speaker 2: because the problem with the Cowboys, and this is what
[4:44] Speaker 2: I was saying about how they're, I think they're better
[4:45] Speaker 2: than everyone thinks they got two ones.
[4:48] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:48] Speaker 2: Here we think about George Pickens. He is a one, uh,
[4:51] Speaker 2: very few teams have that kind of wide receiver death
[4:53] Speaker 2: and boy, do the Kansas city chiefs not have that
[4:56] Speaker 2: kind of wide receiver death.
[4:57] Speaker 1: Do you ever think that Riley Moss is just a
[5:00] Speaker 1: little bit sick of hearing about Cooper to Jean? Like
[5:02] Speaker 1: he ain't right there actually playing outside corner for maybe
[5:05] Speaker 1: the best defense. in the NFL. And I think people
[5:08] Speaker 1: don't even know that he the OG Cooper D.
[5:11] Speaker 2: He was also good last year before he got hurt.
[5:14] Speaker 2: And unfortunately he came back, I think from the injury,
[5:16] Speaker 2: not him, Riley Moss himself. And then he got killed by,
[5:19] Speaker 2: I think the Bengals was that one in national game.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Cause yeah, you're right.
[5:23] Speaker 1: He is.
[5:23] Speaker 2: He was the OG Cooper. He also has the misfortune
[5:28] Speaker 2: of playing opposite Patrick Sertan, which means he just gets
[5:31] Speaker 2: thrown at constantly.
[5:33] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[5:34] Speaker 2: It's unfortunate.
[5:35] Speaker 1: Well, first of all, that was going to be the
[5:37] Speaker 1: plan coming out of the huddle already, right? Like he
[5:40] Speaker 1: could be opposite Beaumont Jones and they're going to be like, nah,
[5:43] Speaker 1: Riley Moss. Let's see if that's the guy that we're
[5:44] Speaker 1: going to pick on until proven otherwise.
[5:47] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, and Quinion Mitchell, to be fair, he's
[5:49] Speaker 2: not certain yet, but he's really good. And I think
[5:52] Speaker 2: he has that effect. Can I say something about the Chiefs? Yeah. I,
[5:58] Speaker 2: after all this wide receiver talk, I know we're correctly
[6:01] Speaker 2: criticizing their offense.
[6:02] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[6:03] Speaker 2: I'm more worried about the defense, man, after week one.
[6:05] Speaker 2: I think that was kind of like you talked about
[6:08] Speaker 2: how everyone thought the Chiefs would be better. I think
[6:11] Speaker 2: there's this assumption that because Steve Spagnuolo is so good
[6:14] Speaker 2: and Chris Jones is so good, they can just keep
[6:17] Speaker 2: cycling in these young DBs that no one's ever heard of,
[6:19] Speaker 2: like all named Justin and Josh, and it's going to
[6:22] Speaker 2: be fine. And it was not fine at all against
[6:27] Speaker 2: the Chargers. And I think kind of maybe that got
[6:30] Speaker 2: slept on a little bit this offseason that they– have
[6:33] Speaker 2: really gotten younger and younger on defense.
[6:36] Speaker 1: I would also point out that Chris Jones is 31
[6:38] Speaker 1: years old. And, you know, you can only expect but
[6:43] Speaker 1: so much. Like, I get worried, and I know that
[6:45] Speaker 1: that back and forth that he had with, I've already
[6:47] Speaker 1: forgotten the dude's name, in the game in Brazil.
[6:49] Speaker 2: Tight and tight.
[6:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, but when teams start, like, it was like I
[6:53] Speaker 1: felt about my league neighbors. Hey, man, when it's like
[6:55] Speaker 1: this in week one, y'all already snippy in week one.
[6:59] Speaker 1: We just got here. We just showed up.
[7:01] Speaker 2: Yeah. Sorry, it wasn't Tyre. Tyre was the Chargers defensive
[7:05] Speaker 2: tackle who hit Travis Kelsey.
[7:07] Speaker 3: Yes.
[7:07] Speaker 1: That was crazy.
[7:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's... I don't know, though. We've just done
[7:13] Speaker 2: this movie with the Chiefs so many times. I'm not
[7:14] Speaker 2: going to throw a... I think it's hard, too, after
[7:17] Speaker 2: watching the Ravens and the Bills, who... My feeling coming
[7:20] Speaker 2: into the season were those were very too clearly the
[7:22] Speaker 2: two best teams in the AFC. I kept the Chiefs
[7:24] Speaker 2: in that tier out of respect, but... Watching all three
[7:29] Speaker 2: of those teams this weekend, especially watching Sunday Night Football,
[7:32] Speaker 2: it just felt like those teams are cut above Kansas
[7:36] Speaker 2: City right now. And so it is just, I don't know.
[7:42] Speaker 2: Can you imagine the Chiefs in that game that we
[7:45] Speaker 2: saw between Lamar and Josh? It just feels different.
[7:49] Speaker 1: I feel that way, though. I mean, you just got
[7:52] Speaker 1: to wait for the Ravens to get a little yippy, right?
[7:56] Speaker 1: Like they have, I feel like, demonstrated themselves to be
[7:58] Speaker 1: the yip masters. You don't want to be the ones
[8:01] Speaker 1: we know as the yip masters. And look, Josh Allen
[8:04] Speaker 1: has spent a lot of his career being a yip master,
[8:07] Speaker 1: but he's not a yip master all the time, right?
[8:09] Speaker 1: Like he might have a yippy moment, but he just
[8:12] Speaker 1: looked like Superman in this game.
[8:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that we can, these yips are pretty
[8:19] Speaker 2: much gone with him. I hate the Ravens thing so much.
[8:22] Speaker 2: I hate talking about the Baltimore Ravens because I am
[8:27] Speaker 2: a person who wants to believe that football is logical
[8:31] Speaker 2: and you can analyze teams and figure out their weaknesses
[8:35] Speaker 2: and game plans and go in and look through numbers
[8:38] Speaker 2: and understand what's going wrong. And then you give me
[8:40] Speaker 2: the Baltimore Ravens and I'm just, I'm just like, I
[8:42] Speaker 2: don't know what to do with this. Like, like as
[8:44] Speaker 2: an analyst, you know what I mean? Like, what do you,
[8:46] Speaker 2: what do you do with this? A team that loses
[8:49] Speaker 2: in weird, stupid ways in big moments, different ways. I don't,
[8:54] Speaker 2: I don't, I do not know what to do with
[8:57] Speaker 2: this team. I just don't.
[8:58] Speaker 1: A thing that I always lean on and it's very important.
[9:01] Speaker 1: You can never forget is we got all this other
[9:03] Speaker 1: stuff and then we got people stuff.
[9:05] Speaker 3: Right.
[9:06] Speaker 1: And people stuff comes up. We talked about this with
[9:07] Speaker 1: Dominique last week and Dominique, does not like to say
[9:12] Speaker 1: that people can't handle moments or pressure or whatever it was.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Like he just doesn't like to do it. But I
[9:17] Speaker 1: think that that is an incontrovertible fact. We see it
[9:20] Speaker 1: all over the place. We are all built to do
[9:22] Speaker 1: different things in different ways. Us doing television, for example,
[9:28] Speaker 1: there's some things I always feel about doing television. You
[9:30] Speaker 1: can or you can't. I can't necessarily make you better
[9:33] Speaker 1: at it, but there's some people a red light comes
[9:35] Speaker 1: on and they're going to freeze. It doesn't matter how
[9:37] Speaker 1: smart they are. It doesn't matter how much they know
[9:39] Speaker 1: or whatever. That light comes on and they ain't got
[9:42] Speaker 1: it right. This happens on other spaces. This happens in
[9:46] Speaker 1: sports where you get into your head and you start
[9:49] Speaker 1: thinking so much about what it is. that you have
[9:51] Speaker 1: to do. And it is something that can be overcome.
[9:56] Speaker 1: And by the way, to be seen as a champion,
[9:58] Speaker 1: you don't have to overcome it all the time. You
[10:00] Speaker 1: just need to pop up and do it once or twice.
[10:02] Speaker 1: But the Ravens, I think it's generally speaking a top-down situation.
[10:06] Speaker 1: And that is why I think it's just about time
[10:09] Speaker 1: up for John Harbaugh because Lamar ain't the only person
[10:12] Speaker 1: this happens to. In fact, in the game in Buffalo
[10:14] Speaker 1: last year, It happened to Lamar early. He pulled it together.
[10:17] Speaker 1: And it was Mark Andrews that then wound up wetting
[10:19] Speaker 1: his pants in front of everybody. If it's always somebody,
[10:21] Speaker 1: we got to start looking at who's in charge.
[10:23] Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and I also think Harbaugh, in that game,
[10:27] Speaker 2: you can correctly criticize him for being conservative at the
[10:30] Speaker 2: end and turtling up. Scared behavior.
[10:33] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[10:34] Speaker 2: And I think I don't– the problem is I don't–
[10:39] Speaker 2: not the problem, because I do agree with you at
[10:40] Speaker 2: a certain point if you're a team that keeps– doing
[10:42] Speaker 2: this and running into walls, there's really no one else
[10:44] Speaker 2: to blame.
[10:45] Speaker 3: Right.
[10:46] Speaker 2: I will say though, like, you know, that has not
[10:48] Speaker 2: been the problem in other moments where they've gone conservative.
[10:50] Speaker 2: So I just don't, it's so, it's so frustrating for me. Like,
[10:55] Speaker 2: I feel like the good doctor trying to solve a
[10:57] Speaker 2: medical mystery. I don't know why I went to the
[10:59] Speaker 2: autistic doctor on television there, but TV, like I, I
[11:03] Speaker 2: just see a lot of commercials for that show. Yeah.
[11:07] Speaker 2: I just, cause we get asked right on these TV shows,
[11:10] Speaker 2: like what, what's wrong with them. And it's my least
[11:14] Speaker 2: favorite kind of football analysis, which is people just talking
[11:16] Speaker 2: about vibes. And, but at this certain point, there's really
[11:20] Speaker 2: nothing else you can do with the Baltimore Ravens. They're
[11:25] Speaker 2: so good. Like for 80% of that team, they looked
[11:28] Speaker 2: like very game. Pardon me. They looked so clearly like
[11:32] Speaker 2: the best team in the NFL. And then it just all,
[11:35] Speaker 2: it all fell apart. And it makes me, and it's
[11:39] Speaker 2: going to be annoying too, because now, until the end
[11:41] Speaker 2: of the season, even if, let's say, they rebound and
[11:44] Speaker 2: they start dominating teams, everybody's just going to say, cool,
[11:47] Speaker 2: do it in January. And they're not wrong, but I
[11:48] Speaker 2: hate that. I hate that argument. I hate it so much.
[11:52] Speaker 1: I do think, though, you don't like everybody's side of
[11:54] Speaker 1: life's two gods. I do think, though, that if nothing else,
[12:01] Speaker 1: looking at the box score of the game against Buffalo,
[12:04] Speaker 1: and from watching it, but the box score kind of
[12:06] Speaker 1: tells the story. And look, they were so effective on
[12:08] Speaker 1: the ground that they didn't throw the ball that much. However,
[12:11] Speaker 1: I think number two receiver is more of a discussion
[12:14] Speaker 1: for them than we kind of give it credit for
[12:16] Speaker 1: being like, it's what's left of DeAndre Hopkins is what
[12:19] Speaker 1: you're kind of leaning on in this. You're also leaning
[12:21] Speaker 1: on kind of whatever's left of Mark Andrews, right? Like
[12:23] Speaker 1: these are, I don't feel like these are things that
[12:25] Speaker 1: are promised to you for the entirety of a season
[12:27] Speaker 1: at this point. That is where I would work.
[12:30] Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, how about the defense though? I mean, that was,
[12:34] Speaker 2: because the offense really until the last two drives wasn't
[12:36] Speaker 2: the issue. The lack of pass rush jumped out to
[12:38] Speaker 2: me and they've been so good at, creating like ginning
[12:42] Speaker 2: up a pass rush through scheme. They don't have like
[12:46] Speaker 2: a dominant rusher on that defensive line, but I felt,
[12:49] Speaker 2: I think this is a great example of like, okay,
[12:51] Speaker 2: but let's week one, like, yes, it didn't look like
[12:55] Speaker 2: the pass rush was getting it done, but also Josh
[12:58] Speaker 2: Allen might be the hardest quarterback to sack outside of
[13:00] Speaker 2: your own quarterback and all the football and the off
[13:03] Speaker 2: the bills offensive line is awesome. So I don't want
[13:05] Speaker 2: to overreact to the defense and the lack of pass
[13:09] Speaker 2: rush in this because I, I think a lot of
[13:11] Speaker 2: that was just Buffalo.
[13:13] Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting if Buffalo turns out to
[13:15] Speaker 1: be that good, right?
[13:17] Speaker 2: Dude, the defense is not good, though.
[13:19] Speaker 1: I know.
[13:19] Speaker 2: They were good for one drive where it mattered, but
[13:23] Speaker 2: the whole game they were getting gashed.
[13:25] Speaker 1: I know.
[13:27] Speaker 2: I'm actually really interested in this week's game against the
[13:29] Speaker 2: Jets for that reason, because the Jets looked like a
[13:34] Speaker 2: very good rushing team week one, and the Bills team
[13:37] Speaker 2: just got ran through. So let's see.
[13:41] Speaker 3: Right.
[13:41] Speaker 2: Like, is this going to be an issue all year?
[13:42] Speaker 2: We're going to find out.
[13:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, no, this is AFC is going to be fun, man.
[13:46] Speaker 1: AFC is going to be fun to check. I want
[13:48] Speaker 1: to I want to get back to the Chiefs on
[13:50] Speaker 1: this question because I don't have the great answer for it. Right.
[13:52] Speaker 1: And you go back through the history of the NFL.
[13:55] Speaker 1: And I know a few people have written this piece
[13:57] Speaker 1: over the years. Like, I feel like either Grantland or
[14:01] Speaker 1: the ring or one of those incarnations of Simmons World
[14:03] Speaker 1: has done this. But when you go and see who's
[14:06] Speaker 1: held the belt for being the best quarterback in the league,
[14:10] Speaker 1: it is not quite the straight line that you think
[14:12] Speaker 1: it is, right? Like when Joe Montana retired, people of
[14:16] Speaker 1: my age and a little older had a fair point
[14:18] Speaker 1: that he was the greatest quarterback of all time. But
[14:21] Speaker 1: it didn't really get to a place where people thought
[14:23] Speaker 1: he was the best quarterback in the NFL really until 1989, 1990.
[14:27] Speaker 1: Dan Marino was the best quarterback in the NFL from
[14:31] Speaker 1: 1984 to 1986 without question. I'm not sure he was
[14:34] Speaker 1: ever the best quarterback in the league after that, but
[14:35] Speaker 1: you're not going to tell me that Dan Marino got worse.
[14:38] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? That doesn't add up. And
[14:41] Speaker 1: I think that we're at that place now with Mahomes,
[14:42] Speaker 1: the greatest quarterback that I have ever seen, Yet it's
[14:45] Speaker 1: hard to say that he's better than Josh Allen or
[14:47] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson right now. But I don't know how much
[14:49] Speaker 1: of that is his fault because he was still out
[14:50] Speaker 1: here doing that Matrix shit in Brazil, completing passes that
[14:54] Speaker 1: seemed humanly impossible.
[14:56] Speaker 2: The way I would put it, if you shuffle all
[14:58] Speaker 2: the quarterbacks and put them on each other's teams, if
[15:02] Speaker 2: you took Patrick Mahomes and put him on either the
[15:05] Speaker 2: Bills with their dominant run game or the Ravens also
[15:07] Speaker 2: with dominant run game and those tight ends, I am
[15:12] Speaker 2: of the belief, and I love Josh Allen, Lamar, that
[15:15] Speaker 2: the offenses would look just as good, that Mahomes would
[15:18] Speaker 2: look like Patrick Mahomes again. And you can say that's
[15:21] Speaker 2: making excuses for him. I just think Kansas City, like
[15:24] Speaker 2: the infrastructure, is really not great right now, right? You
[15:27] Speaker 2: got a young offensive line who flux. You can't run
[15:30] Speaker 2: the ball for shit. You barely have any right receivers.
[15:32] Speaker 2: And the offense, like, looks kind of not right for
[15:37] Speaker 2: the moment.
[15:39] Speaker 1: It's just.
[15:41] Speaker 2: It's a lot of RPOs. And again, it's not fair
[15:47] Speaker 2: to Andy Reid for me to say, I don't know,
[15:49] Speaker 2: what are you doing? He is clearly having to call
[15:51] Speaker 2: that because of the limitations of the personnel. But Mahomes
[15:56] Speaker 2: is playing at a higher level of difficulty than all
[15:59] Speaker 2: of these quarterbacks right now. That makes it really hard
[16:02] Speaker 2: to compare them.
[16:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that is a fair characterization. I think
[16:08] Speaker 1: we were talking about this earlier this week about Josh Allen.
[16:10] Speaker 1: Part of what makes it amazing for him is because
[16:13] Speaker 1: you need to send somebody with a big number to
[16:15] Speaker 1: take him down, he does not have to play on time.
[16:19] Speaker 1: He can be back there however long it takes. I
[16:21] Speaker 1: think teams have given up on sending the fifth guy
[16:24] Speaker 1: because the fifth guy is not going to be big
[16:26] Speaker 1: enough to take him down. So you send four, you
[16:28] Speaker 1: hope you get pressure, you drop seven, and he buys
[16:32] Speaker 1: enough time that somebody's going to get open.
[16:34] Speaker 2: I mean him and Lamar, right? Like they do it
[16:36] Speaker 2: in different ways, but the net effect is the same.
[16:38] Speaker 2: They're both, they're both unsackable and they both don't throw interceptions.
[16:45] Speaker 1: Like, what do you do with that?
[16:47] Speaker 2: What do you do with that?
[16:48] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[16:49] Speaker 2: It's, I know we like last year, it kind of
[16:51] Speaker 2: turned into world war three in the football world because
[16:54] Speaker 2: of the MVP thing. But like I, it was, you know,
[16:58] Speaker 2: and like we talked about this, I voted for Lamar.
[16:59] Speaker 2: I just thought what he did last season was just insane. But,
[17:03] Speaker 2: Right now, it's a hair. You could put them in
[17:09] Speaker 2: either order. They're just... And yes, they're both in much
[17:14] Speaker 2: better situations than Mahomes. Both play behind good offensive lines.
[17:18] Speaker 2: Both have a lot... I think the scheme is also
[17:21] Speaker 2: really good for both of them. But don't get it twisted.
[17:24] Speaker 2: They are the sons that the galaxy orbits around or whatever.
[17:30] Speaker 2: The solar system.
[17:31] Speaker 1: Like.
[17:33] Speaker 2: you know the reason guys are open the reason teams
[17:36] Speaker 2: are so afraid to run the reason teams play certain
[17:38] Speaker 2: coverages is because of those two quarterbacks and and what
[17:40] Speaker 2: they can do with their legs right.
[17:42] Speaker 1: Now I want to switch gears a little bit since
[17:45] Speaker 1: we're talking about all world quarterbacks with all the talent
[17:48] Speaker 1: in the world now we can talk about the San
[17:50] Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers I thought.
[17:54] Speaker 2: That was gonna be Justin Fields I was excited you.
[17:55] Speaker 1: Know I think that both of us agree that Brock
[17:59] Speaker 1: Purdy is a starting NFL quarterback, right? I don't think
[18:03] Speaker 1: we have to get too far into the hyperbole. He
[18:05] Speaker 1: is a starting quarterback. It looks like he's going to
[18:07] Speaker 1: be out for a while. He's got a bad shoulder,
[18:09] Speaker 1: and he's got that turf toe. Turf toe, number one
[18:12] Speaker 1: on the list, along with the hip pointer, things that hurt,
[18:15] Speaker 1: or the bone bruise, things that hurt a lot more
[18:18] Speaker 1: than they sound like when written on paper.
[18:21] Speaker 2: They called it a turf-toe variant, which sounds like the
[18:24] Speaker 2: worst thing.
[18:26] Speaker 1: That sounds like he caught it rather than he got it, right? Like,
[18:29] Speaker 1: I knew I should have worn my mask.
[18:36] Speaker 2: Brock Purdy now has had quite a few big injuries.
[18:40] Speaker 2: That's another thing.
[18:41] Speaker 1: Well, I mean, he plays for the 49ers. Like, apparently
[18:44] Speaker 1: you need to have a lot in your what they
[18:45] Speaker 1: call an HSA system. Because you will be spending money
[18:48] Speaker 1: on health care playing for that roster. So he's out
[18:51] Speaker 1: two to five weeks. And you remember that time when
[18:55] Speaker 1: the 49ers traded to move up in the draft? Oh, yeah.
[18:58] Speaker 1: Everybody thought that they had given up the world so
[19:00] Speaker 1: they could go take Mac Jones because Chris Sims, who
[19:03] Speaker 1: has Kyle Shanahan's initials tattooed on his body, said that
[19:08] Speaker 1: if they made that move, they would take Mac Jones
[19:10] Speaker 1: and everybody ate the cheese. Well, guess who's going to
[19:12] Speaker 1: start for the 49ers this week at long last? Mac Jones.
[19:17] Speaker 2: You know what this is like For Kyle Shanahan When
[19:21] Speaker 2: you have like Someone you got a crush on In
[19:24] Speaker 2: I don't know Like high school And you've just idealized
[19:28] Speaker 2: it For so long Because nothing ever happened And then
[19:31] Speaker 2: finally You Let's take a high school reunion Or maybe
[19:34] Speaker 2: you're at home For Thanksgiving And you're at the bar
[19:37] Speaker 2: And you see them And It's There's just no way
[19:41] Speaker 2: It can live up To your expectations I feel like
[19:45] Speaker 2: That's going to be Kyle Shanahan realizing who Mac Jones
[19:48] Speaker 2: really is and what the limits are. of what he
[19:50] Speaker 2: can do with him this week. At this point, he
[19:54] Speaker 2: has to have given up on that dream. I don't know.
[19:58] Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. Because think about this.
[20:00] Speaker 1: Think about this. We all had, like, Kirk Cousins as
[20:03] Speaker 1: the Kyle Shanahan dream quarterback. But let us not forget
[20:05] Speaker 1: that when Kirk Cousins actually played for Kyle Shanahan, he stuck.
[20:08] Speaker 2: Right?
[20:08] Speaker 1: Right. Like he held on to what it could be.
[20:11] Speaker 1: Are you familiar with the comedian, Robin Harris? No.
[20:15] Speaker 3: All right.
[20:15] Speaker 1: Robin Harris. He died now almost 40 years ago, but
[20:19] Speaker 1: Robin Harris or 30 more like 35. But anyway, Robin
[20:22] Speaker 1: Harris had a routine that you probably couldn't really get
[20:24] Speaker 1: away with. And I am going to paraphrase it. And
[20:27] Speaker 1: he basically said he don't like having a good looking woman.
[20:29] Speaker 1: He said he liked having an ugly woman. You can
[20:31] Speaker 1: tell the ugly woman anything. He said, you walk in
[20:33] Speaker 1: and tell the ugly woman, Hey, I'm going to the moon.
[20:37] Speaker 1: I'll be back in a couple of days. And this,
[20:39] Speaker 1: you just say to him, will you be careful? I
[20:43] Speaker 1: feel like the Shanahan tree, that's how they are about quarterbacks.
[20:47] Speaker 1: They don't want no star at quarterback because they be
[20:50] Speaker 1: on their own time. They be doing stuff, whatever it is.
[20:53] Speaker 1: They want them an ugly quarterback that do whatever they say.
[20:56] Speaker 1: That is what they see when they see the Mac
[20:58] Speaker 1: Joneses of the world and all these other guys. If
[21:01] Speaker 1: you just do what I tell you, then everything will
[21:05] Speaker 1: be okay, man. These stars, these stunners, they got a
[21:08] Speaker 1: mind of their own. You know what I'm saying? That's
[21:10] Speaker 1: not what they're going for. And now old plain Jane
[21:13] Speaker 1: Mack Jones is finally walking in and Kyle Shatterhead is like, look,
[21:17] Speaker 1: I don't know how exciting she is, but I bet
[21:19] Speaker 1: dinner going to be ready on time. That's what he
[21:22] Speaker 1: thinks is about to happen.
[21:23] Speaker 2: Sorry, we got to get on with this tangent. When
[21:25] Speaker 2: you see that, the equivalent of an age gap relationship,
[21:29] Speaker 2: shall we say a looks gap relationship? Because I don't
[21:33] Speaker 2: know what your algorithm is like. My algorithm shows me
[21:36] Speaker 2: a lot of... I think it's because it's rage bait
[21:38] Speaker 2: for people. A lot of age gaps both ways. Yes.
[21:41] Speaker 2: And then they show me... the man with the surprising women.
[21:44] Speaker 1: Right. I see that.
[21:46] Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe men see the reverse. I don't know. Do
[21:48] Speaker 2: you see like the, the woman with the surprising man who.
[21:53] Speaker 1: Look, all I ever think when I see such a thing.
[21:56] Speaker 2: That's what I'm going to ask you.
[21:59] Speaker 1: There is an explanation.
[22:01] Speaker 2: Just a neutral, like could be.
[22:04] Speaker 1: I don't know necessarily what that explanation might be.
[22:07] Speaker 2: You don't think, man, she's.
[22:10] Speaker 1: It's on the board. It's on the board. What you're
[22:13] Speaker 1: saying is yes, 100% on the board. Like, look, when
[22:17] Speaker 1: this happens and there is a gap of sorts, the
[22:20] Speaker 1: way this goes is dude, and I don't know how
[22:22] Speaker 1: this goes is women, because I think with women, when
[22:24] Speaker 1: it's a gap, you just assume the dude is really nice.
[22:27] Speaker 1: Or rich. Yeah. The gap that we wind up with
[22:30] Speaker 1: here is, or when the gap is present, you see
[22:33] Speaker 1: the two of them together or you meet them and
[22:35] Speaker 1: they're together and then she leaves and then the dude
[22:38] Speaker 1: hits you out of nowhere, man. Dog, I'm telling you, boy,
[22:41] Speaker 1: she cool as hell. Or, or, boy, I'm telling you, boy,
[22:45] Speaker 1: once that food ready, boy, we gonna eat. Like, they're
[22:48] Speaker 1: going to, they're immediately like, I know, I know, I know,
[22:52] Speaker 1: but they immediately go there.
[22:56] Speaker 2: Or my brain was going somewhere else. I was thinking rejected, rejected, rejected.
[23:00] Speaker 1: It's on the board. It's on the board. I'm just
[23:03] Speaker 1: telling you what the fella says because what else is
[23:06] Speaker 1: on the board you can't, you shouldn't tell your partners.
[23:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but it is the assumption that everyone, well,
[23:14] Speaker 2: there's a few, yeah.
[23:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, there's something special here.
[23:21] Speaker 2: It's crazy that our mind never goes to bring it
[23:24] Speaker 2: back to Kyle Shanahan. That just must be his type, right?
[23:30] Speaker 2: Which is often the actual explanation.
[23:32] Speaker 1: Yes.
[23:34] Speaker 2: Usually, all right, we're just kidding. When this happens, and
[23:37] Speaker 2: it's someone you know, they got a history.
[23:41] Speaker 3: Yes.
[23:41] Speaker 2: It's not like 10, 10, 10, 4?
[23:45] Speaker 1: Right.
[23:46] Speaker 2: That is not the pattern.
[23:49] Speaker 1: Right.
[23:50] Speaker 2: For men and women. Right.
[23:52] Speaker 1: That is fair. That is fair.
[23:54] Speaker 2: There's not usually like an absurd deviation from that. But
[23:57] Speaker 2: our brains don't go to like, that's just not how
[24:00] Speaker 2: we process. The dinner analogy is probably the best one, yeah,
[24:05] Speaker 2: for Shanahan. Because, yeah, they want someone, the Shanahan family,
[24:10] Speaker 2: they want, you know, like the guy sitting in the
[24:12] Speaker 2: mech suit pushing buttons, right?
[24:14] Speaker 1: Yes.
[24:15] Speaker 2: Like they want someone to just execute the offense. The
[24:18] Speaker 2: problem is, Matt Jones ain't that dude.
[24:21] Speaker 1: Right.
[24:22] Speaker 2: And, and to his credit was actually kind of that dude. Yes.
[24:26] Speaker 1: But he's also going to give you a lot of
[24:28] Speaker 1: lip and a lot of sass.
[24:29] Speaker 2: He is sassy.
[24:31] Speaker 1: He is. He is. That is. Yeah. He's going to, he,
[24:34] Speaker 1: he's going to give you a lot of backtalk, right? That,
[24:38] Speaker 1: that is what happened in new England. And they were like, yo,
[24:40] Speaker 1: get a load of this guy. Are you kidding me? Yeah.
[24:46] Speaker 2: Um, I am not super optimistic also, Beau, because it
[24:52] Speaker 2: would be one thing if this was the Niners all-star
[24:54] Speaker 2: team of a couple years ago where everybody's healthy. It's
[24:58] Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey. It's Brandon Ayuk. It's George Kittle, the offensive line.
[25:03] Speaker 2: It is a very diminished version of that that he's
[25:06] Speaker 2: going to have to make this work with. They are
[25:08] Speaker 2: playing the Saints this weekend, so that's going to help.
[25:11] Speaker 1: But yeah, I... Slut buster.
[25:14] Speaker 2: Right. Saints are... I, yeah, I'm not optimistic. Also.
[25:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[25:20] Speaker 2: I mean, since he actually played the Niners and watching that,
[25:25] Speaker 2: I am not saying Trent Williams is.
[25:32] Speaker 1: But this is like year 17. Yeah.
[25:34] Speaker 2: He looks a little older out there and he was
[25:39] Speaker 2: kind of like the one thing holding this whole offensive
[25:41] Speaker 2: line together. And so you start to get worried about that.
[25:44] Speaker 1: Yeah. So as we go into advertisements, I will say
[25:47] Speaker 1: to you, Ryan, You are welcome, for Ryan said to me,
[25:51] Speaker 1: thank you for landing that plane. We'll be back. Football

[27:19] Speaker 1: All right. We are back with Mina Kimes. As you know,
[27:24] Speaker 1: I am a day one fan of the Detroit Lions.
[27:27] Speaker 1: I have enjoyed the ride up until this point. The
[27:31] Speaker 1: last time we talked about the Lions and I expressed
[27:33] Speaker 1: to you my patience of Jerry Goff, you told me
[27:35] Speaker 1: that I've definitely become a different person. And you may
[27:38] Speaker 1: be correct because I was not. feeling good on sunday
[27:43] Speaker 1: watching what happened there my read on it is i
[27:46] Speaker 1: didn't think the defense looked bad um but i thought
[27:49] Speaker 1: it really all came down that they're not getting any
[27:51] Speaker 1: push um on the inside guards and center are not
[27:54] Speaker 1: doing anything and if they don't get that push i
[27:56] Speaker 1: don't see what they're supposed to do and tell me
[27:58] Speaker 1: why i shouldn't be terrified.
[28:00] Speaker 2: Um if i had to give you one source of
[28:04] Speaker 2: comfort or i guess excuse i think the packers like
[28:08] Speaker 2: are those like that team Right. So I think that's
[28:11] Speaker 2: a Super Bowl team right there. So, you know, we're
[28:14] Speaker 2: talking a little bit about how kind of week one
[28:16] Speaker 2: can sway things either way when you don't recognize or
[28:20] Speaker 2: when we don't really know who the best is at things.
[28:24] Speaker 2: I think that they're going to have a much better
[28:27] Speaker 2: time this week against Chicago, against old friend Ben Johnson.
[28:30] Speaker 2: That said, you're not wrong to be concerned because it.
[28:36] Speaker 2: the whole operation was kind of discouraging. It wasn't just
[28:39] Speaker 2: the interior offensive line. They got a new play caller who,
[28:43] Speaker 2: when they hired him, everybody was a little confused. It wasn't,
[28:47] Speaker 2: you know, John Morton is from Denver. He's kind of
[28:50] Speaker 2: got an interesting resume, but it wasn't like quite, it
[28:53] Speaker 2: didn't set the world on fire. Let's just say that.
[28:55] Speaker 2: And I think week one, that was, you didn't feel
[28:58] Speaker 2: great watching that offense. You didn't get that. That feeling,
[29:02] Speaker 2: that use, not just of like the creativity of the
[29:04] Speaker 2: play calling, the combination of the creativity of the play
[29:06] Speaker 2: calling and the physical domination up front, just totally gone
[29:09] Speaker 2: at week one, which is not great.
[29:11] Speaker 1: I wonder how many people were like me when they
[29:13] Speaker 1: hired John Morton and thought they hired Johnny Morton, former
[29:18] Speaker 1: Detroit Lion wide receiver with the all-time classic quote, Jay
[29:22] Speaker 1: Leno can kiss my ass.
[29:23] Speaker 2: He can do that. Yeah, I'll be honest. The guy
[29:27] Speaker 2: wasn't on my radar at all. And the other thing, Beau,
[29:32] Speaker 2: I know I keep alluding to the Jets and nobody
[29:34] Speaker 2: wants to hear me talk about the Jets. They got
[29:36] Speaker 2: their past game coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, and that all fell apart.
[29:40] Speaker 2: looked awesome week one. So you're talking about a brain drain,
[29:44] Speaker 2: not only of Ben Johnson, but the past game coordinator
[29:46] Speaker 2: as well. Then you start to get a little bit worried, right?
[29:48] Speaker 2: You're like, oh, maybe... Maybe they lost two guys.
[29:52] Speaker 1: Right. Well, they lost Antoine Randall L also who went
[29:56] Speaker 1: over with Ben Johnson. And I will say this because
[29:58] Speaker 1: I am okay with talking about the jets because it'll
[30:00] Speaker 1: make my life better living in the city. If the
[30:02] Speaker 1: jets and or giants are good, it is definitely a
[30:05] Speaker 1: significant quality of life improvement with the Knicks being good.
[30:08] Speaker 1: I know I saw your face. I understand it would,
[30:11] Speaker 1: it would help. Right. Justin Fields, who has to me,
[30:15] Speaker 1: the most damning problem that you can have, which is
[30:18] Speaker 1: takes too long to throw the ball. did not take
[30:20] Speaker 1: too long to throw the ball in this game. That
[30:22] Speaker 1: is a thing that people typically don't fix. He was
[30:25] Speaker 1: not taking too long to throw the ball. I was
[30:27] Speaker 1: floored by how good he looked.
[30:30] Speaker 2: This was the biggest surprise of week one to me.
[30:32] Speaker 2: And Fox and I talked about it, and he was
[30:36] Speaker 2: better than Aaron Rodgers in the game. And I know
[30:39] Speaker 2: they lost, and I feel like Rodgers got all the
[30:42] Speaker 2: hype coming out of it. And Rodgers looked good, too.
[30:43] Speaker 2: I'm not going to say he didn't. But I thought
[30:46] Speaker 2: Fields was... exceptional and maybe, I mean, he's had games,
[30:51] Speaker 2: he had games in Chicago where he was doing more
[30:53] Speaker 2: like crazy explosive stuff with his legs, 60 yard runs,
[30:56] Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But this is the best he's
[30:58] Speaker 2: looked quarterbacking to me since coming into the league. Like
[31:01] Speaker 2: you said, the ball was coming out fast. He was accurate.
[31:04] Speaker 2: He was throwing over the middle of the field, which
[31:06] Speaker 2: he never does. And then he ran a lot, which
[31:09] Speaker 2: is something we didn't really see in Pittsburgh for some reason.
[31:11] Speaker 2: But there's tons of design runs and scrambles in this game.
[31:14] Speaker 2: The whole rushing attack looks really good. So, yeah, I
[31:16] Speaker 2: don't know, man. I think the Bills defense kind of
[31:20] Speaker 2: might be a little bit cheeks. So I'm not going
[31:22] Speaker 2: to overplay it, but. it was pretty encouraging and kind
[31:26] Speaker 2: of shocking. That whole game was shocking. It was like
[31:28] Speaker 2: so entertaining.
[31:29] Speaker 1: It really was like, it was a, it was a
[31:32] Speaker 1: good game. And I want to say this right fast.
[31:33] Speaker 1: Now that you mentioned it about the bills defense, if
[31:36] Speaker 1: the bills defense is bad, boy, the bills will be
[31:39] Speaker 1: a lot of fun to watch this year. Like we're
[31:41] Speaker 1: talking track meets. Cause look, Cincinnati should give us track meets,
[31:45] Speaker 1: except it looked like they was running all one leg
[31:47] Speaker 1: against the Browns, which shocked me. Cause I mean, I
[31:50] Speaker 1: don't know how the Browns are going to win no
[31:52] Speaker 1: games this year. The Bengals, even if the plan is
[31:55] Speaker 1: you're just going to be really good on offense and
[31:56] Speaker 1: terrible on defense, but you might be able to get
[31:58] Speaker 1: 9-8 or 10-7 out of that. The Browns, I don't
[32:03] Speaker 1: see how they're supposed to get anything out of that.
[32:05] Speaker 1: And they almost won that game. They very easily could have.
[32:08] Speaker 2: They should have won it.
[32:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[32:10] Speaker 2: If they had. Can you imagine the Bengals' discourse this week?
[32:14] Speaker 2: I mean, the Bengals' discourse this week should be like
[32:17] Speaker 2: suspicious but I think like a lot of people didn't
[32:19] Speaker 2: just didn't watch that game um yeah I mean the
[32:24] Speaker 2: Browns the Saints Titans you know like I think it's
[32:29] Speaker 2: already like pretty obvious who the get right teams are
[32:32] Speaker 2: and that was not a get right game at all
[32:34] Speaker 2: for Cincinnati uh I know I talked earlier about the
[32:37] Speaker 2: Chiefs and I'm being in the tier of the Bengals
[32:39] Speaker 2: they aren't even sniffing that tier. Um, I mean, they
[32:43] Speaker 2: were supposed to come out and play the preseason. Everybody's healthy.
[32:46] Speaker 2: We signed all the receivers. The offense was supposed to look,
[32:49] Speaker 2: they were supposed to be, like you said, the 41
[32:52] Speaker 2: point team. And it just didn't look good at all
[32:54] Speaker 2: to me. I, yeah, I was really underwhelmed by Cincinnati.
[32:59] Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's, that's, that's, that's, that one's looking like
[33:03] Speaker 1: bad news, like terrible news, but on the, The other
[33:06] Speaker 1: thing I have to ask you, though, about the Lions,
[33:08] Speaker 1: and this is the part that I think I overlooked
[33:10] Speaker 1: and I think a lot of us overlooked, because it
[33:11] Speaker 1: was like, cool, Aiden Hutchinson's going to come back. But
[33:14] Speaker 1: when they had Aiden Hutchinson, they had pass rush issues,
[33:18] Speaker 1: and I felt like in the game against Green Bay,
[33:20] Speaker 1: they still had pass rush issues.
[33:23] Speaker 2: I thought the Lions' defense would be much better, honestly,
[33:28] Speaker 2: than they looked. The Green Bay offensive line is not
[33:33] Speaker 2: that great. I mean... And they were stonewalling them. And
[33:37] Speaker 2: you said it, like outside of Hutchinson, you don't really
[33:39] Speaker 2: have anyone getting after the quarterback. The defensive tackles are hurt.
[33:42] Speaker 1: But it was.
[33:46] Speaker 2: My whole theory about the Lions going into this season
[33:50] Speaker 2: was that the offensive line, or the offense, pardon me,
[33:52] Speaker 2: would take a step back, but that it would be
[33:54] Speaker 2: mitigated by the defense being healthy and adding some talent.
[33:57] Speaker 2: And that's just not what I saw week one at all.
[34:00] Speaker 2: But again... I think the Packers are a wagon. I
[34:03] Speaker 2: really do. So if it happens again this week against Chicago,
[34:08] Speaker 2: and we know, talk about unloading the clip, like Ben
[34:10] Speaker 2: Johnson is going to, everything he's got is going to
[34:14] Speaker 2: go into this game. Then you start to panic.
[34:17] Speaker 1: You think that the Vikings got a dude with McCarthy?
[34:21] Speaker 1: I mean, because look, they won 14 games with Sam Darnold. Yeah.
[34:24] Speaker 1: And I don't care what anybody says. He's exactly who
[34:27] Speaker 1: he's been.
[34:29] Speaker 2: He....
[34:32] Speaker 3: J.J.
[34:32] Speaker 2: McCarthy was.
[34:39] Speaker 2: I don't know what you say about a quarterback who
[34:40] Speaker 2: was good for 20% of the game, right? On one hand,
[34:49] Speaker 2: you have to say, well, he really struggled in the beginning,
[34:52] Speaker 2: but then this is his first start, so I'm not
[34:56] Speaker 2: leaping to conclusions either way.
[34:57] Speaker 1: I think.
[34:59] Speaker 2: What you saw with Minnesota, though, at the end that
[35:01] Speaker 2: is really encouraging is the run game looked really good
[35:04] Speaker 2: at the end, and that's kind of when he settled down,
[35:06] Speaker 2: and it's no coincidence. Because that was clearly their focus
[35:11] Speaker 2: this offseason. Like, hey, we're going to fix the interior
[35:13] Speaker 2: of the offensive line. They traded for Jordan Mason. I
[35:15] Speaker 2: thought that was a sneaky, underrated trade. And we know
[35:18] Speaker 2: that J.J. McCarty, the kid who barely threw the ball
[35:20] Speaker 2: in college, we want to give him a ground game
[35:23] Speaker 2: that's better than the one we've had the last couple
[35:24] Speaker 2: of years. Because you've got these defenses. They play constantly
[35:26] Speaker 2: shell coverage because of Justin Jefferson and Addison when he's
[35:28] Speaker 2: out there. but they haven't really been able to punish
[35:31] Speaker 2: them for doing so underneath. And this was a problem,
[35:32] Speaker 2: by the way, with Sam Darnold near the end of
[35:34] Speaker 2: the playoffs. Okay, cool. But you know, for first half
[35:38] Speaker 2: of this game, didn't look that great. And then you
[35:39] Speaker 2: saw that come alive. I think that's going to continue.
[35:43] Speaker 2: And I think with McCarthy too, like, you know, he
[35:44] Speaker 2: doesn't have to be great for this offense to work.
[35:47] Speaker 2: If that's happening, he just has to be competent. And
[35:50] Speaker 2: he certainly looked like that at the end of the game.
[35:51] Speaker 2: We'll see if it continues. Yeah.
[35:53] Speaker 1: I thought that I thought he made throws that you
[35:56] Speaker 1: feel good about the young dude making right. And, to
[35:59] Speaker 1: be not good the whole game and then maintain your
[36:02] Speaker 1: composure at that point. I thought that I thought there
[36:05] Speaker 1: was room for optimism in that performance. But of course
[36:09] Speaker 1: the obvious counterpoint is they were playing the bears. Um,
[36:14] Speaker 1: the way that like, we had kind of framed this
[36:15] Speaker 1: in our minds before we got here was the guy
[36:17] Speaker 1: like who has more on the line with this. But
[36:18] Speaker 1: I think my question really, when it comes to the bears,
[36:20] Speaker 1: and we've talked about Kayla Williams a lot here though, is, um, Like,
[36:26] Speaker 1: what do you need to see before, you know, to
[36:28] Speaker 1: keep everybody quiet? Because I don't think he needs to
[36:30] Speaker 1: be the best quarterback in the division. I think that
[36:33] Speaker 1: there were some measures of progress in the last game,
[36:35] Speaker 1: but I did not find that performance to be particularly encouraging. Like,
[36:39] Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not sure what exactly Johnson is
[36:41] Speaker 1: going for. I'm not sure what they expect, but the
[36:45] Speaker 1: clock is on him in a way that I'm not
[36:48] Speaker 1: sure he recognizes, but I've been doing this long enough
[36:51] Speaker 1: to know they coming for your neck, young man. Yeah.
[36:55] Speaker 2: I have felt all offseason, despair's offense is going to
[36:59] Speaker 2: take a second to look right. Because, you know, yeah,
[37:04] Speaker 2: they invest in the... I talk about the Minnesota investing
[37:06] Speaker 2: in the inside of the offensive line. I'm not a
[37:08] Speaker 2: huge fan of DeAndre Swift as a back. The run
[37:11] Speaker 2: game was such a big part of what Ben Johnson
[37:13] Speaker 2: did in Detroit. I wasn't entirely convinced that it was
[37:16] Speaker 2: going to look as good immediately in Chicago. And it
[37:18] Speaker 2: looked awful, dude. Like, they were really bad running the
[37:20] Speaker 2: football week one. So... I felt like it was going
[37:24] Speaker 2: to take a second for if you're going to have to,
[37:26] Speaker 2: you know, if that's not working and you've got to
[37:28] Speaker 2: evolve the offense and you're also accommodating Caleb's skill sets
[37:31] Speaker 2: and he's learning a new system, it's going to take,
[37:33] Speaker 2: everybody's learning a new offense. It's going to take some time.
[37:38] Speaker 2: You know, it was, I'm kind of torn because I
[37:40] Speaker 2: thought like week one, like he had flashes of really
[37:42] Speaker 2: good play, really impressive throws. Then obviously some egregious misses
[37:47] Speaker 2: and some conservatism. I also think the Vikings defense is
[37:51] Speaker 2: really good again. maybe better this year. They signed Javon Hargrave,
[37:58] Speaker 2: Jonathan Allen, and Hargrave was killing them up front on
[38:02] Speaker 2: the inside. So this is another one where like, hey,
[38:04] Speaker 2: like week two is going to be a big barometer
[38:06] Speaker 2: for him. Can he look better than he did week
[38:09] Speaker 2: one against what seems to be clearly an inferior defense?
[38:12] Speaker 2: And if not, yeah, it's going to be, I mean,
[38:15] Speaker 2: the criticism is already loud. because it was an island
[38:18] Speaker 2: game and everybody watched. But I think this– I'm kind
[38:20] Speaker 2: of waiting a couple weeks before I really start to panic.
[38:24] Speaker 1: I think that makes sense. We wanted to ask you
[38:25] Speaker 1: something about the Seahawks. Before we get to the Seahawks, though,
[38:28] Speaker 1: we'll do something tangential off the Seahawks. Did you tear
[38:32] Speaker 1: up just a little bit watching Geno out there dealing, dealing,
[38:37] Speaker 1: dealing for another team?
[38:39] Speaker 2: Tear up– I mean, I– uh you know i was
[38:42] Speaker 2: pretty loud about not approving of that trade so my
[38:47] Speaker 2: desire to be right trumps that's been the interesting thing
[38:53] Speaker 2: about doing this uh while i'm also a still a
[38:57] Speaker 2: fan of a team and all that is like you
[38:59] Speaker 2: you realize you have all these like competing interests right
[39:02] Speaker 2: you know this you've been in the game for a
[39:03] Speaker 2: long time like when you're watching football and like what
[39:08] Speaker 2: screams louder for you in your brain and you're like
[39:10] Speaker 2: little like the little part of your brain when you're
[39:14] Speaker 2: watching the game well.
[39:15] Speaker 1: So i've been doing this for the most part without
[39:18] Speaker 1: a lot of clear like fandom roots yeah so i
[39:21] Speaker 1: could just always go ego right just just always on
[39:25] Speaker 1: the i want to be right in this like in
[39:27] Speaker 1: doing the kind of shows that i do kind of
[39:29] Speaker 1: coward or something about it's good for business to be
[39:31] Speaker 1: wrong every now and then then I ain't trying to
[39:33] Speaker 1: be Lee Iacocca you know what I'm saying like I
[39:34] Speaker 1: don't I'm trying to be I'm trying to get this
[39:37] Speaker 1: shit right every if I don't I don't but I'm
[39:40] Speaker 1: trying to nail this every single time and I'm not
[39:43] Speaker 1: trying to hear no guff from the public. I don't
[39:46] Speaker 1: want that. I'm going for that generally. Now, now with
[39:50] Speaker 1: my Lions, I want to be wrong about the things
[39:54] Speaker 1: that I am saying. And if I'm proven to be wrong,
[39:57] Speaker 1: I will be incredibly thrilled.
[39:59] Speaker 2: That's how I feel about the Seahawks at the moment.
[40:02] Speaker 2: Because like I said, I was really critical of the trade.
[40:04] Speaker 2: I was very pessimistic about the offense. I'm not watching them,
[40:08] Speaker 2: you know, not convert third downs against the Niners and,
[40:11] Speaker 2: being like, yeah, I was right. It sucks, right? Still,
[40:16] Speaker 2: the fan part of my brain is overcoming the desire
[40:18] Speaker 2: to be right. But watching Geno dealing, throwing bombs to
[40:22] Speaker 2: Brock Bowers downfield, it's all good.
[40:25] Speaker 1: It's all.
[40:28] Speaker 2: I've got too many shares of Geno Smith's stock, pardon me,
[40:31] Speaker 2: right now to watch a dip and not feel like, ooh.
[40:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, no, your thing that's going to be interesting to
[40:39] Speaker 1: watch it, like running conflict with reality, especially now that
[40:42] Speaker 1: it's happening on your own team, is that you came
[40:45] Speaker 1: on this show and referred to yourself, and let me
[40:47] Speaker 1: know if I get this incorrect, as a Sampathizer. I know.
[40:53] Speaker 1: In reference to old buddy Sandar.
[40:56] Speaker 2: But that was cool when he was the backup making
[41:00] Speaker 2: 10 million.
[41:03] Speaker 1: Yes.
[41:04] Speaker 2: Context matters.
[41:06] Speaker 1: Roles matter.
[41:07] Speaker 2: I will ride for, yes. I will say, I will
[41:12] Speaker 2: say like that, like right now, like I'm, you know,
[41:15] Speaker 2: thinking about I'm looking at Justin Fields' stock right now.
[41:18] Speaker 2: It's priced at $ 5. And I'm thinking, maybe I'll ride
[41:23] Speaker 2: this until it gets to $ 10. And then I'm selling.
[41:27] Speaker 2: And that's how I was with Sam Darnold, to be clear.
[41:29] Speaker 2: The argument was never, wow, this is a quarterback one.
[41:33] Speaker 2: He's so underrated. It was, nah, this is an undervalued stock.
[41:38] Speaker 2: And I'm looking at Fields right now, and I'm thinking
[41:40] Speaker 2: the same thing.
[41:43] Speaker 1: Okay, so when you talk about like the value of
[41:46] Speaker 1: being correct, this is where I could be a little
[41:49] Speaker 1: bit of a radical about this being correct. And Sam
[41:53] Speaker 1: Darnold is a great example. As we got farther and
[41:56] Speaker 1: farther through last year, people were talking about him using like...
[42:00] Speaker 1: Not like anybody thought he was a real MVP candidate,
[42:03] Speaker 1: but they was getting a little ahead of themselves. And
[42:05] Speaker 1: then when he turned right back into Sam Darnold at
[42:08] Speaker 1: the end of the year, boy, I was right here
[42:10] Speaker 1: to tell everybody that I hit it right all along. Like,
[42:14] Speaker 1: once the wheels came off for him, I was rooting
[42:17] Speaker 1: for it to catch on fire. I don't know what
[42:19] Speaker 1: that says about me, but I just.
[42:21] Speaker 2: I know what it says about you, hater. That I
[42:24] Speaker 2: was bright.
[42:25] Speaker 1: That's what it says about me.
[42:26] Speaker 2: You love.
[42:28] Speaker 2: Is it more gratifying to be right about an underrated
[42:33] Speaker 2: player being good or an overrated player being bad?
[42:38] Speaker 1: Oh, it's the overrated player being bad. Because when you
[42:41] Speaker 1: say an underrated player is good, people don't really get
[42:44] Speaker 1: off in your grill about it in the same way
[42:46] Speaker 1: as when you take the courageous stance to say, no,
[42:50] Speaker 1: this is not as good as what you see it is, right?
[42:53] Speaker 1: Like it's the Hannibal Buress meme. Why are you booing me?
[42:58] Speaker 1: I'm right. You know, like that's what it is.
[43:00] Speaker 2: I'm different. I like, so I was a pretty big
[43:04] Speaker 2: Jimmy Garoppolo critic for a long time and maybe even
[43:08] Speaker 2: the center of some minor controversies because of it. And
[43:11] Speaker 2: when that train went off the tracks, I wasn't like
[43:14] Speaker 2: celebrating anything. I mean, I did celebrate a little bit.
[43:18] Speaker 2: I did post a couple of gifts. But I didn't
[43:26] Speaker 2: feel great about it in the same way that I
[43:30] Speaker 2: feel great when a draft take ends up being correct.
[43:35] Speaker 1: I can see that. I can see that.
[43:37] Speaker 2: A positive one.
[43:38] Speaker 1: So you got to this side of the business a
[43:41] Speaker 1: little late. But for what I'm about to bring up,
[43:47] Speaker 1: I was forged in the trenches of T-Bone Mania. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[43:57] Speaker 1: I was, and so you have to remember, T-Bone's rookie
[44:02] Speaker 1: year is 2010. 2011 is when T-Bone Mania happens. I
[44:07] Speaker 1: started doing Around the Horn in October of 2010. And
[44:12] Speaker 1: this is the era where Woody Page is on around
[44:14] Speaker 1: the horn just about every day and definitely every Monday.
[44:17] Speaker 1: And he's coming off all these Broncos games. And I
[44:20] Speaker 1: will know. Just wins. They played their first game against
[44:24] Speaker 1: the Dolphins. And it was, oh, God, it was so bad.
[44:27] Speaker 1: And then they won at the end because all the
[44:28] Speaker 1: games went like that. Right. And I remember I got
[44:32] Speaker 1: on the call and it was Bob Ryan, Tim Kyle
[44:35] Speaker 1: Shaw and Woody Page. And they all soft pedaled it.
[44:40] Speaker 1: And it got to me. And I said to them,
[44:42] Speaker 1: what a player on the Dolphins told me after that game,
[44:44] Speaker 1: this is the worst quarterback I've ever seen. Like, I
[44:46] Speaker 1: couldn't believe that I was all alone in this. And
[44:49] Speaker 1: gradually I would get some people. But then it was
[44:51] Speaker 1: he just wins with a dollop of God is good.
[44:54] Speaker 1: And so it just kept happening and it kept happening.
[44:56] Speaker 1: And I mean, you can go look at those clips
[44:58] Speaker 1: of me on TV if they're available. I was not
[45:00] Speaker 1: pretending to lose my mind. I was losing my shit
[45:04] Speaker 1: every day.
[45:05] Speaker 2: Week.
[45:06] Speaker 1: And then when they got their doors blown off at
[45:08] Speaker 1: the end, and that was the worst part. They get
[45:10] Speaker 1: their doors blown off in the regular season, nobody care.
[45:12] Speaker 1: They end the regular season with three straight losses, nobody care.
[45:14] Speaker 1: He got there, had him damn 300 yards against the Steelers,
[45:18] Speaker 1: and I'm just like, oh man, you gotta be kidding me.
[45:20] Speaker 1: And I never got a full season of him being cheats.
[45:24] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I never got that, and
[45:27] Speaker 1: I wanted it so bad. I deserved it. I deserved it.
[45:30] Speaker 2: I think it's important to point out here, though, that
[45:33] Speaker 2: the reason why you became such a hater is not
[45:37] Speaker 2: because of Tim Tebow himself, but because of your peers
[45:42] Speaker 2: lying on him.
[45:43] Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
[45:43] Speaker 2: Like that is the infuriating part. And it makes you
[45:47] Speaker 2: feel crazy. It's like climate change denialism. You're just like,
[45:51] Speaker 2: you're like, I feel insane. You feel like gaslit watching it.
[45:56] Speaker 2: And God, this game, when the Shador Sanders, like week three,
[46:00] Speaker 2: the great Shador Sanders died, pre-season week three controversy erupted online.
[46:06] Speaker 2: It was really like, everybody's like, wow, this is crazy.
[46:08] Speaker 2: This has never happened in sports. And the Tebow thing
[46:11] Speaker 2: was the first thing that came to my mind. Like
[46:14] Speaker 2: when a story just goes thermonuclear and breaks contained to
[46:18] Speaker 2: the point where people who don't actually watch the game
[46:20] Speaker 2: are weighing in with strong opinions.
[46:24] Speaker 1: Tebow mania felt like the movie major league, except what
[46:30] Speaker 1: if the coach said, Like the coach wanted to win, obviously, right?
[46:34] Speaker 1: But I contend they put Tebow in at the second
[46:37] Speaker 1: half of the game against the Chargers. And I'm convinced
[46:40] Speaker 1: that John Fox was like, well, he's going to be terrible.
[46:42] Speaker 1: And now finally shut these people up. But he got
[46:44] Speaker 1: just enough done. And then he was stuck riding that
[46:47] Speaker 1: ride for the rest of the year. And the only
[46:49] Speaker 1: way they could get him out of there, they had
[46:51] Speaker 1: to go get Peyton Manning. They couldn't just go get
[46:54] Speaker 1: a credible starting quarterback. They had to leave, no doubt.
[46:57] Speaker 1: John Elway, oh my God, I just can't imagine what
[46:59] Speaker 1: it was like. The John Elway that wished he could
[47:02] Speaker 1: have taken Cam Newton that year got stuck with Tim Tebow.
[47:06] Speaker 2: What is the closest thing we've got right now in
[47:10] Speaker 2: sports to where a thing that makes you feel crazy?
[47:13] Speaker 2: Is there anything? I don't think there's nothing like that.
[47:16] Speaker 1: There's nothing like.
[47:16] Speaker 2: Tebow in football where it feels like everyone's being... No, no, no, no.
[47:23] Speaker 1: There's nothing there. I'm pretty strident in where I stand
[47:29] Speaker 1: on Jalen Hurts, but I understand the argument on the
[47:31] Speaker 1: other side. You know what I mean? So it doesn't
[47:34] Speaker 1: make me insane that people think that he is better
[47:37] Speaker 1: than I think he is. There's got to be something
[47:42] Speaker 1: in basketball that if I think about it long and
[47:45] Speaker 1: hard enough that I could get to. Some of the.
[47:51] Speaker 2: I'm going to tread here with caution. Some of the
[47:54] Speaker 2: Bo Nicks takes flowing around this offseason.
[47:58] Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay. So here's the thing. Here's the thing, right?
[48:00] Speaker 1: you are deeper in those weeds than I am. Okay, yeah.
[48:03] Speaker 2: See, I think that's too deep.
[48:05] Speaker 1: If I were in those weeds with you because I
[48:07] Speaker 1: went on somebody's podcast and simply said that I am
[48:11] Speaker 1: not a Bo Nix believer and they came for me
[48:16] Speaker 1: about that, right? Like if I did NFL all day,
[48:19] Speaker 1: every day, yes, I would be exactly right there where
[48:23] Speaker 1: you are on that one.
[48:24] Speaker 2: Every year, there's a quarterback that just breaks everybody's brains.
[48:31] Speaker 2: where like the conversation around the quarterback, it's always a quarterback,
[48:36] Speaker 2: stops being normal. Tebow is the most extreme version of
[48:39] Speaker 2: that of the last like 20 years, I would argue.
[48:42] Speaker 2: Probably ever, to be honest.
[48:44] Speaker 1: Yes.
[48:45] Speaker 2: But I felt Jimmy G was that for me, for sure.
[48:48] Speaker 2: For like two years with San Francisco, where I felt
[48:51] Speaker 2: crazy the way people were talking about it.
[48:54] Speaker 3: Right.
[48:56] Speaker 2: Trubisky was like this i mean i did daniel jones
[48:58] Speaker 2: was like that you can all there's always one where
[49:01] Speaker 2: there's such a disparity between how fans and people who
[49:06] Speaker 2: do like box score watching talk about the guy versus
[49:09] Speaker 2: what is actually happening on the field that's it's it's
[49:13] Speaker 2: very it's too early to say who that guy is.
[49:17] Speaker 1: Nick's.
[49:18] Speaker 2: It feels like it felt to me like this summer,
[49:20] Speaker 2: it was kind of becoming that quarterback. Um, we'll see
[49:26] Speaker 2: how that plays out though.
[49:27] Speaker 1: Jamie Garoppolo was, uh, um, I don't know the right word,
[49:34] Speaker 1: but like, he was not good for my high noon marriage.
[49:37] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like it was driving me
[49:39] Speaker 1: crazy in a way that it was driving you crazy.
[49:41] Speaker 1: And I think Pablo was just enamored by the fact that,
[49:44] Speaker 1: you know, what was he like all swarthy and everything.
[49:47] Speaker 2: So many people like loved him.
[49:51] Speaker 1: Yeah. A wedge, Ryan said he was a wedge. He
[49:53] Speaker 1: was a wedge in our relationship and people really did
[49:55] Speaker 1: love him. They had a whole playoff game when they
[49:57] Speaker 1: didn't throw the ball one time in the second half.
[49:59] Speaker 1: And I was like, guys, I'm sorry. That is not
[50:02] Speaker 1: simply a function of we're really good at running the ball.
[50:05] Speaker 1: That's not what that means. The coach is telling you,
[50:08] Speaker 1: I got a bum out here.
[50:10] Speaker 2: Tua was this for two years.
[50:12] Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. The Tuanon people.
[50:15] Speaker 2: Tua. Every year, I'm telling you, Jimmy Garoppolo passed that
[50:18] Speaker 2: torch to Tua. Who is Tua going to pass it to?
[50:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, because I think we feel pretty settled right now
[50:25] Speaker 1: on the Tua thing.
[50:28] Speaker 2: When the Tua thing was happening, too, and I got like,
[50:32] Speaker 2: I just remember thinking, like, I just went through this.
[50:35] Speaker 2: I can't do this again, or I'm fighting these people. Yeah,
[50:42] Speaker 2: I don't know who it is yet. Candidates, like I said,
[50:46] Speaker 2: there's a few. There's a few.
[50:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, we got to start looking at young guys, right?
[50:49] Speaker 1: We got to start scouting the next classes of these dudes. Like, hey, man,
[50:54] Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, fascinating career arc that Justin Fields is hoping
[50:57] Speaker 1: to emulate, right? Except Baker Mayfield, at least, There was
[51:00] Speaker 1: a time where we thought Baker Mayfield was good. And
[51:02] Speaker 1: I don't think we, we were always holding out hope
[51:04] Speaker 1: on Justin Fields, right? Like we didn't get there. Baker
[51:07] Speaker 1: Mayfield now is, I think one of the mistakes that
[51:11] Speaker 1: we make in talking about quarterbacks is in our verbiage
[51:14] Speaker 1: and they're, not everybody has to be a franchise quarterback.
[51:18] Speaker 1: Some people are starting quarterbacks.
[51:19] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[51:20] Speaker 1: And Baker Mayfield appears to be a very good starting quarterback.
[51:23] Speaker 1: And that is not an insult because starting quarterbacks are
[51:25] Speaker 1: hard to find, but Josh Allen is a franchise quarterback.
[51:28] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes are, those are starting quarterbacks. Joe
[51:31] Speaker 1: Burrow looks to be a franchise. I mean, they're all
[51:33] Speaker 1: franchise quarterbacks. Joe Burrow appears to be a franchise quarterback.
[51:37] Speaker 1: Some guys are starting quarterbacks and that's okay. Right. He's
[51:40] Speaker 1: a very good starting quarterback. And I mean, The Falcons
[51:45] Speaker 1: lost that game because Falcons lose games, but they still,
[51:47] Speaker 1: good job winning, I guess.
[51:50] Speaker 2: He didn't look, they struggled. I mean, he had made
[51:53] Speaker 2: a couple of impressive throws, but yeah, I think your
[51:56] Speaker 2: diagnosis is correct. It's the tier that I would put
[52:00] Speaker 2: him in. I think it's usually a younger guy is
[52:08] Speaker 2: the brain breaker. Yeah. Because usually fans... attach themselves to
[52:13] Speaker 2: like a young, usually it's a guy on a rookie contract.
[52:16] Speaker 2: So I, yeah, I, you know, scouting, scouting a few
[52:19] Speaker 2: out there. Um, but yeah, I Broncos week one. Ooh,
[52:26] Speaker 2: did you watch any of that? I did buddy.
[52:29] Speaker 3: Ooh, I did.
[52:35] Speaker 1: It was by the way, the brain breaker very soon
[52:38] Speaker 1: will very clearly be arch.
[52:43] Speaker 2: I wonder, though, if they're getting that out of the
[52:45] Speaker 2: way now.
[52:48] Speaker 1: Some team is going to get him, though, and then
[52:50] Speaker 1: there will be an army of fans who pick it
[52:52] Speaker 1: up anew. Does he have.
[52:54] Speaker 2: Wait, can I.
[52:55] Speaker 1: Ask you that, though?
[52:56] Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm not super tapped into college football internet.
[52:59] Speaker 2: I just watch the games. I actually felt... I didn't...
[53:05] Speaker 2: But it seemed like he doesn't have that strident hive.
[53:09] Speaker 2: If anything... I actually felt like he had a lot
[53:13] Speaker 2: more haters than I expected come.
[53:16] Speaker 1: Out of the woodwork. Well, I mean, one, he plays
[53:19] Speaker 1: for Texas. And I don't think any school has more
[53:21] Speaker 1: other schools that hate them than Texas does. And that's
[53:24] Speaker 1: not a function of Texas' longstanding greatness. It's about geography.
[53:28] Speaker 1: But we start there, right? So he's playing for a longstanding,
[53:31] Speaker 1: underachieving program that a lot of people dislike. And the
[53:36] Speaker 1: not beating out Quinn Ewers thing is also a discussion
[53:39] Speaker 1: that then comes up. But the hype machine behind him
[53:42] Speaker 1: felt so artificial coming into this year. And the things
[53:44] Speaker 1: I heard people say on television, I'm like, you don't
[53:46] Speaker 1: believe this. This is impossible that you believe this.
[53:49] Speaker 2: And it did him no favors. I ended up feeling
[53:52] Speaker 2: bad for the guy. Yeah, I just feel like he
[53:57] Speaker 2: was put in a really shitty situation because of what
[54:00] Speaker 2: you're describing. But I also felt like he didn't have,
[54:03] Speaker 2: I don't know, like when we're talking about the quarterback
[54:05] Speaker 2: who breaks people's brains, they have to have a hive, right?
[54:08] Speaker 1: That is true.
[54:09] Speaker 2: They got to have a, I didn't, there's no arching on.
[54:13] Speaker 3: Right. Fair, fair.
[54:15] Speaker 1: But when he gets to the league, it'll be a
[54:16] Speaker 1: little bit different. Yeah.
[54:17] Speaker 2: Right. NFL teams will just, what, whoever they just project
[54:21] Speaker 2: quarterbacks or canvases on which people paint their psychosis. Like
[54:24] Speaker 2: this is just.
[54:25] Speaker 1: Well, also because whatever team he winds up with is
[54:28] Speaker 1: not going to have another option that perhaps you can want.
[54:30] Speaker 1: Like generally speaking, a college football program may not have
[54:33] Speaker 1: the guy ready to start right now, but you ain't
[54:35] Speaker 1: just only going to have one. You know what I mean?
[54:37] Speaker 1: like you're probably going to have somebody else. And though, though,
[54:39] Speaker 1: once you get to the league, like the Broncos need
[54:42] Speaker 1: Bo Nix to be that guy. All right. If he's
[54:44] Speaker 1: not that guy, you're kind of, you're kind of fucked
[54:46] Speaker 1: up for like two more years.
[54:47] Speaker 2: Yes. That is such a good point. The difference between
[54:51] Speaker 2: college football and the NFL. Right. Cause like if NFL
[54:53] Speaker 2: or the college football, it's like, Ooh, fans will kind
[54:55] Speaker 2: of by the end be like, all right, move it on.
[54:56] Speaker 2: Who's next. Who's using the transfer portal. You're right. With
[54:59] Speaker 2: college football. So, or with the NFL, pardon me, a
[55:03] Speaker 2: lot of this craziness around these, these, quarterbacks that we're
[55:07] Speaker 2: talking about, the polarizing guys, is driven by the fact
[55:10] Speaker 2: that the teams need him to be good. It's why
[55:17] Speaker 2: a guy like Fields and Darnold or whatever, Gino and Vegas,
[55:21] Speaker 2: I don't think those fan bases will ever do that
[55:23] Speaker 2: because they don't feel like that level of financial investment.
[55:26] Speaker 2: It's like, okay, we can move on if he's not
[55:27] Speaker 2: that good. There's a sunk cost thing that's.
[55:32] Speaker 1: Well, so Fields is an interesting example because I did
[55:36] Speaker 1: feel that there was a measure of this when he
[55:38] Speaker 1: was with Chicago. And what happened with him in Chicago,
[55:40] Speaker 1: people need to realize that the city of Chicago is
[55:43] Speaker 1: home territory for two sets of things. One of them
[55:47] Speaker 1: is Chicago professional sports. The other is the Big Ten.
[55:50] Speaker 1: And so what that means is if you live in
[55:53] Speaker 1: Chicago and you're a Big Ten fan, he either played
[55:56] Speaker 1: for Ohio State or he destroyed you. So you come
[56:00] Speaker 1: in with that optimism, and then he's the first hope
[56:02] Speaker 1: that you have. And then the moment you realize he
[56:05] Speaker 1: looked like the rest of them bums that you've seen
[56:06] Speaker 1: for the rest of the time, you go from there.
[56:08] Speaker 2: So DeFields did have the– he was breaking for the
[56:11] Speaker 2: exact reasons you described. Bears fans were like a crazy
[56:14] Speaker 2: defensive of him when he struggled early on.
[56:16] Speaker 1: Yes.
[56:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, such a good point about the college football fans. Yeah,
[56:22] Speaker 2: so the factors that have to be in place for the–
[56:25] Speaker 2: put a trademark, the quarterback who breaks people's brains– it's
[56:28] Speaker 2: gotta be young guy. It's gotta be, it's an NFL.
[56:31] Speaker 2: They have to have investment, whether he was at high
[56:34] Speaker 2: draft pick or there's a lot of money behind it.
[56:36] Speaker 2: One of those two things have to be the case. It's,
[56:39] Speaker 2: it's yeah. I guess Tebow doesn't, but that would, um,
[56:44] Speaker 2: they gotta be winning.
[56:45] Speaker 1: Yes.
[56:46] Speaker 2: But then not because of him. Yes. Um, then, and
[56:52] Speaker 2: there has, yeah, I think those are the main things.
[56:55] Speaker 1: Well, hold on. You know who used to be one
[56:57] Speaker 1: of those? Josh Allen. Yeah.
[57:02] Speaker 2: And then he just became actually who he thought he was.
[57:07] Speaker 1: He assumed the role to which he had been cast.
[57:10] Speaker 1: But the first three years, I mean, he was breaking
[57:12] Speaker 1: our brains.
[57:14] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[57:15] Speaker 1: Well, they were breaking our brains. Their brains were broken,
[57:17] Speaker 1: and then it became contagious, and it broke our brains
[57:19] Speaker 1: because we was fighting, but we gave up.
[57:22] Speaker 2: I took the L early. Never looked back.
[57:25] Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm just enjoying the ride.
[57:28] Speaker 2: The best L I've ever taken.
[57:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, the best thing, though, I just feel like it's
[57:31] Speaker 1: important for us to always make sure that people know
[57:33] Speaker 1: that we weren't there at first because I don't want
[57:35] Speaker 1: to act like, you know, I've been there with you.
[57:38] Speaker 2: He wasn't there at first either.
[57:40] Speaker 1: No, he wasn't. I always found the person most honest
[57:43] Speaker 1: about Josh Allen at every turn was Josh Allen. And
[57:45] Speaker 1: that's part of why I actually find it so endearing now.
[57:48] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I totally, I, has there ever been a
[57:54] Speaker 2: quarterback who you thought about taking the L, but then
[58:00] Speaker 2: you were like, hold strong, hold strong, you know, hold, hold, like, don't, don't,
[58:05] Speaker 2: you know, like, and then eventually history proved you right.
[58:11] Speaker 1: Sam Darnold, 2024. I got to think about that though.
[58:16] Speaker 2: Two and a half briefly broke me.
[58:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[58:19] Speaker 2: It wasn't, I didn't say like, oh, he is, you're right,
[58:21] Speaker 2: you guys, he's better than Herbert. Because that was always
[58:23] Speaker 2: about him and Herbert, right? That was, I mean, there
[58:26] Speaker 2: were people who were really pounding that Tua's better than
[58:30] Speaker 2: Herbert because it was the same draft and all that.
[58:32] Speaker 2: And I never did that. But there were moments where
[58:35] Speaker 2: I think I was more, I just kind of like,
[58:39] Speaker 2: I didn't take the L per se, but I rolled
[58:41] Speaker 2: over a little bit in retrospect.
[58:43] Speaker 1: Oh, Carson Wentz.
[58:45] Speaker 2: That's a good one.
[58:47] Speaker 1: Carson wentz he he made it tricky and then it
[58:49] Speaker 1: turned out to be what it was uh i imagine
[58:52] Speaker 1: somebody still holding out about kyler murray he just keep
[58:55] Speaker 1: riding along at that ambiguous purgatory of bustdom level um
[59:00] Speaker 1: somebody's going to be there with trevor lawrence.
[59:04] Speaker 2: I think that offense is actually gonna be pretty good
[59:06] Speaker 2: though watching.
[59:07] Speaker 1: Them yeah next time you're on we'll have to talk
[59:09] Speaker 1: it'll be another stage of the Travis Hunter experiment because
[59:13] Speaker 1: I don't know what anybody's doing over there.
[59:17] Speaker 2: Just play one. Just whatever.
[59:19] Speaker 1: I just don't. They're trying to reinvent the wheel. You
[59:23] Speaker 1: and I are on the same page.
[59:25] Speaker 2: Deontay, have you ever had him on? He's great. Mm-hmm.
[59:28] Speaker 1: I've not had them all good enough.
[59:29] Speaker 2: He had a comp that kind of briefly broke my
[59:33] Speaker 2: brain a little bit where he was watching Caleb and said,
[59:35] Speaker 2: Caleb has a lot of Trevor Lawrence in him. And
[59:39] Speaker 2: that made me kind of sit still for a second
[59:42] Speaker 2: with that thought in my head and think about it.
[59:45] Speaker 2: I'd never thought about those two quarterbacks, but it definitely
[59:50] Speaker 2: struck a chord with me.
[59:52] Speaker 1: I think that is a good time for me to
[59:54] Speaker 1: tell you guys that is Mina Combs. You can check
