[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:22] Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week. We have
[0:24] Speaker 1: a guest. Join us. Check him out at Channel 6,
[0:27] Speaker 1: the best college football writer in America, Spencer Hall. What's
[0:29] Speaker 1: going on, sir?
[0:31] Speaker 2: I'm geeked. I am now officially like in the mode
[0:34] Speaker 2: of like I'm watching camp tape, like sincerely and without
[0:38] Speaker 2: an ounce of irony, like watching reps and going, ooh,
[0:41] Speaker 2: he threw three TDs against his teammates yesterday. It's going
[0:44] Speaker 2: to be an amazing year.
[0:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm there. I see you getting to your playing weight.
[0:48] Speaker 1: And when I talk about you getting into your playing weight,
[0:49] Speaker 1: I'm not talking about your body. I'm talking about the
[0:51] Speaker 1: facial hair. Got a haircut. You know what I'm saying?
[0:54] Speaker 2: Back in from the woods. Yeah, you got to come
[0:56] Speaker 2: back to civilization for three or four months. You know,
[0:59] Speaker 2: I got a trim. I may be getting another one
[1:02] Speaker 2: in the next two months. I'm on top of things.
[1:05] Speaker 1: And we love the idea of when you get these haircuts,
[1:07] Speaker 1: given that you live in Atlanta, it's always fun to
[1:09] Speaker 1: see your new world of compliments that pops up with
[1:13] Speaker 1: the cut and fades away directly proportional to new growth.
[1:17] Speaker 2: That's right. You get this. Everyone's like, oh, man, did
[1:20] Speaker 2: you lose weight? And you're like, in my head? Yeah.
[1:23] Speaker 2: Lost about 10 pounds of hair.
[1:26] Speaker 1: I used to be able to do that.
[1:28] Speaker 2: You still can. I don't want you to know. I
[1:29] Speaker 2: don't want you to do that. If you wanted to
[1:31] Speaker 2: grow out a beautiful head of hair right now, you
[1:33] Speaker 2: could because you did it in the pandemic. I still
[1:36] Speaker 2: think it's there.
[1:37] Speaker 1: I loved the pandemic. The pandemic was the first time
[1:40] Speaker 1: that our hairlines didn't matter, right? We didn't have time
[1:43] Speaker 1: to be worried about that. I was stopping the spread
[1:45] Speaker 1: and that thereby allowed me to have a thick, lush,
[1:48] Speaker 1: luxurious head of hair. And I will tell you, In
[1:51] Speaker 1: moments of stress, that is what I miss it. I
[1:53] Speaker 1: don't like now if I'm like playing with my hair,
[1:56] Speaker 1: I go straight to the scalp. Now, don't get me wrong.
[1:59] Speaker 1: That can also be very soothing. But the difference is
[2:02] Speaker 1: for it to soothe, you got to get all the
[2:04] Speaker 1: way in there.
[2:05] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? And you got to keep
[2:07] Speaker 2: it there. That's the thing. I had a shaved head
[2:10] Speaker 2: for a while back in college when I was like
[2:14] Speaker 2: in sort of a like Stone Cold Steve Austin goes
[2:16] Speaker 2: to a rave mode. And I had it slick, lived
[2:20] Speaker 2: in Florida. When you put the head to the pillow
[2:23] Speaker 2: at night, the cool on the skin, oh, that's just
[2:27] Speaker 2: an immaculate feeling.
[2:28] Speaker 1: I would also say I'm glad that you pulled off
[2:30] Speaker 1: Stone Cold Steve Austin as opposed to what it otherwise
[2:34] Speaker 1: means when a young white male decides he doesn't want
[2:37] Speaker 1: any hair on his head.
[2:38] Speaker 2: You got to be careful with that.
[2:40] Speaker 1: You got to be really careful with that. Like if
[2:42] Speaker 1: you got a bunch of tattoos, don't.
[2:45] Speaker 2: Don't. No, if you got one tattoo, it's kind of
[2:48] Speaker 2: a push, right? You got to be walking out there
[2:51] Speaker 2: and be friendly. That's the thing. You can't walk out
[2:53] Speaker 2: there mean with a shaved head. You got to walk
[2:56] Speaker 2: out with a shaved head and be nice. So very nice.
[2:59] Speaker 1: Yes, great jokes. Jokes will go a long way. College
[3:02] Speaker 1: football season is here. We get started this weekend. From
[3:08] Speaker 1: what I have been able to glean from kind of
[3:12] Speaker 1: the macro level coverage going into the season, There is
[3:16] Speaker 1: a heavy Arch Manning investment that is not supported by fact,
[3:24] Speaker 1: track record, or history of his own.
[3:28] Speaker 2: No.
[3:29] Speaker 1: This hasn't happened. And by the way, the guy that
[3:32] Speaker 1: he did not beat out at Texas, Quinn Ewers, had
[3:36] Speaker 1: his first preseason game, and I believe it was four
[3:39] Speaker 1: for 16. It might be worse.
[3:41] Speaker 2: I think it was like five for 18. Yeah.
[3:43] Speaker 1: It was bad news.
[3:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was bad news. It looked like somebody playing. Okay, listen.
[3:47] Speaker 2: It looked like somebody playing against pros for the first time.
[3:51] Speaker 1: But he wasn't playing against pros. He was playing against
[3:53] Speaker 1: the Orkin man, the Amazon task force. You know what
[3:58] Speaker 1: I'm saying?
[3:58] Speaker 2: I mean, there was a guy in a linebacker, like
[4:01] Speaker 2: a linebacker with a blue vest, right? He made the
[4:05] Speaker 2: tackle and then he took a picture of it, right? Delivered.
[4:10] Speaker 2: uh no i mean yeah he's played but those guys
[4:12] Speaker 2: are still incredibly good and they're better than what you're
[4:14] Speaker 2: gonna see in college you know i i and i
[4:17] Speaker 2: i say this by the way as a manner of
[4:19] Speaker 2: excuse excusing arch because the only time i've seen arch
[4:22] Speaker 2: play in person okay in person was versus georgia and
[4:26] Speaker 2: as our our mutual george foster said who they threw
[4:29] Speaker 2: that boy in the hot grease yeah immediately like they
[4:33] Speaker 2: threw him in the grease immediately and it was popping
[4:35] Speaker 2: and he was frankly, unready, okay? And in a very
[4:39] Speaker 2: unfair situation, Georgia was in a lather. It was the
[4:42] Speaker 2: second quarter. They were already getting all of the cheeks kicked,
[4:47] Speaker 2: like just getting smoked, right? Sometimes the defense just does that.
[4:51] Speaker 2: Like they could just sit back and cover one and
[4:53] Speaker 2: they're like, we're murdering you. We're murdering you. They were
[4:55] Speaker 2: as motivated and as aware of the game plan as
[4:59] Speaker 2: they were at any time in the season. It's the
[5:00] Speaker 2: best like two or three quarters Georgia played all year.
[5:04] Speaker 2: And he wasn't ready. He shouldn't have been ready. Like
[5:07] Speaker 2: by any definition of the word ready and any reasonable expectation,
[5:12] Speaker 2: that's probably what you should have seen. He looked stunned.
[5:15] Speaker 2: He looked like things were moving too fast. He looked
[5:16] Speaker 2: like Quinn Ewers yesterday, which is what happens when somebody
[5:19] Speaker 2: jumps up a level in competition. I don't think we're
[5:22] Speaker 2: going to necessarily be totally ready for what you see
[5:24] Speaker 2: because or aware of what he's truly capable of. Because
[5:28] Speaker 2: have you looked at the first month of their season?
[5:30] Speaker 2: They do get off to a big start against Ohio State,
[5:32] Speaker 2: mind you. That is Ohio State with a new defensive
[5:35] Speaker 2: coordinator replacing a lot of people. However, that's still going
[5:38] Speaker 2: to be on the road. It's still going to be
[5:41] Speaker 2: very intimidating. And it's still going to be at a
[5:44] Speaker 2: speed that he's not entirely familiar with. But the next
[5:47] Speaker 2: three weeks, the next three weeks of the schedule is
[5:49] Speaker 2: where we might start lying to ourselves about him being
[5:52] Speaker 2: maybe better. We'll come out of Ohio State and he
[5:54] Speaker 2: might look terrible. He really might. I don't think he
[5:56] Speaker 2: will because if you know Steve Sarkeesian, he's going to
[5:59] Speaker 2: give his quarterback a lot of easy reads. We're going
[6:00] Speaker 2: to see a lot of throws to the flat. We're
[6:02] Speaker 2: going to see a lot of swing passes. We're going
[6:03] Speaker 2: to see a lot of, you know, easy boots and
[6:05] Speaker 2: play action to get him comfortable and get him some completions.
[6:08] Speaker 2: Those next three weeks, though, that's where we really might
[6:10] Speaker 2: start lying to ourselves because they play San Jose State.
[6:13] Speaker 2: They play Sam Houston and they play UTEP. Those three
[6:17] Speaker 2: schools are going to balloon his stats. It's very good
[6:21] Speaker 2: for him, by the way. That's exactly what I would want.
[6:23] Speaker 2: Like if you were a quarterback and you were going
[6:25] Speaker 2: for the first part of the season, what would you want? Hey,
[6:27] Speaker 2: I want to throw 15 times against Ohio state and
[6:30] Speaker 2: hand the ball off a lot. Great idea. Great idea.
[6:33] Speaker 2: And then for the next three weeks, I want cupcakes.
[6:35] Speaker 2: I want to just sort of build my confidence. I
[6:37] Speaker 2: want to stack stats. I want to look maybe better
[6:39] Speaker 2: than I'm going to look later in the season, because
[6:42] Speaker 2: I'm going to need that. It's a longer season than
[6:44] Speaker 2: it's ever been before. I'm going to need that confidence.
[6:46] Speaker 2: And I'm going to need to frankly take some second
[6:48] Speaker 2: halves off. If I can avoid those hits, if I
[6:51] Speaker 2: can avoid, you know, the trauma of the game itself
[6:53] Speaker 2: and save it for later, I will. So, um, It's
[6:57] Speaker 2: intriguing to me. I don't think you're actually going to
[6:59] Speaker 2: get a decent read on him until the second month,
[7:02] Speaker 2: third month of the season.
[7:03] Speaker 1: So our kind of new reality television model of following sports,
[7:08] Speaker 1: which is to say, for whatever reason, we find familiar
[7:12] Speaker 1: people or familiar names and then they become our obsessions.
[7:15] Speaker 1: This is part of the Shador Sanders situation, right? It
[7:18] Speaker 1: is the way we feel about his father carrying down
[7:22] Speaker 1: to him and that fame conferring upon him. Part of
[7:25] Speaker 1: what is fascinating about Arch Manning, obviously, is he's not
[7:28] Speaker 1: even a son. He's a nephew, right? He is a nephew.
[7:33] Speaker 1: He is Cooper's son. Cooper, who, if I'm not mistaken,
[7:38] Speaker 1: I don't know if he still does, but he used
[7:40] Speaker 1: to have a podcast called Soup with Coop, which is,
[7:44] Speaker 1: by the way, your reinforcement of how much different it
[7:47] Speaker 1: is when it's a white man named Coop and a
[7:49] Speaker 1: black man named Cooper. It means if we call you
[7:53] Speaker 1: Coop because it's your first name, it's something very different
[7:56] Speaker 1: than if we call you Coop and it's your last name. Right.
[7:59] Speaker 1: What I find interesting about Archie Manning in the historical
[8:02] Speaker 1: sense is unlike his brothers, he is actually similar to
[8:07] Speaker 1: his father and his grandfather, rather. Right. I always felt
[8:10] Speaker 1: like Archie Manning had to be terribly ashamed of how
[8:13] Speaker 1: slow his boys were. It has to be very similar
[8:17] Speaker 1: to when like black people raise their kids against white
[8:19] Speaker 1: people and they look up and they can't dance. Right? Like,
[8:22] Speaker 1: oh man, I knew a woman once who told me
[8:24] Speaker 1: that situation. She told me that her daddy looked at
[8:27] Speaker 1: her dancing with white people and immediately put them in track.
[8:30] Speaker 1: because he figured that that would be the next step
[8:33] Speaker 1: to get him back to where he realized he had failed, man.
[8:38] Speaker 1: He tried to give him a better life, and in
[8:40] Speaker 1: some ways, he felt like he gave him a worse one.
[8:43] Speaker 1: But there are reasons to have questions about Arch. There's
[8:46] Speaker 1: been a longstanding belief that much of the hype is
[8:48] Speaker 1: just centered around his last name. I've seen the talent
[8:51] Speaker 1: with him moving. Like I say, that's where he reminds
[8:54] Speaker 1: you of his father. He could really go. i've seen
[8:57] Speaker 1: no reason to believe in arch the passer as of
[8:59] Speaker 1: yet but we're talking about him like like we're almost
[9:04] Speaker 1: talking about him like you talked about andrew no not
[9:06] Speaker 1: like andrew luck going into year three because that was
[9:08] Speaker 1: its own different level of hype but it's still i
[9:12] Speaker 1: feel like it's not a what will arch be which
[9:15] Speaker 1: is what i think the it should be about a
[9:17] Speaker 1: question rather than anything declarative.
[9:20] Speaker 2: I think what you'll see And this is, again, people
[9:23] Speaker 2: pare down playbooks, then they pare down expectations as we go.
[9:27] Speaker 2: If the dude can run, this is college football. He's
[9:32] Speaker 2: going to run. That's it, right? Like, oh, hey, I
[9:35] Speaker 2: don't know. Maybe we need to bring him along with this.
[9:37] Speaker 2: Shut up. No, this is stupid. This is a very
[9:40] Speaker 2: simple game at its root. If he is primarily a runner,
[9:44] Speaker 2: then Steve Sarkeesian and that staff will use him as
[9:46] Speaker 2: a runner. And that is the thing. Now, maybe some
[9:49] Speaker 2: of those things are going to be RPOs, maybe some
[9:52] Speaker 2: of those things are going to be a lot of
[9:53] Speaker 2: sort of simplified run, you know, run pass reads that
[9:56] Speaker 2: he's going to be able to do. And that's fine.
[9:59] Speaker 2: That's fine. leave that to the NFL scouts to worry
[10:02] Speaker 2: about what Texas is charged with is winning and if
[10:05] Speaker 2: that's what he is if he is a runner first
[10:09] Speaker 2: then that's what he's gonna be this is my Bob
[10:12] Speaker 2: Cousy take when somebody's like man Streets weren't ready for
[10:15] Speaker 2: Bob Cousy. You don't know what he was putting down. Okay,
[10:17] Speaker 2: my thing is this. Archie Manning, you have no idea
[10:21] Speaker 2: what an athlete Archie Manning was prior to the Superdome
[10:25] Speaker 2: eating his knees. That's really what I want to get to.
[10:29] Speaker 1: Well, the Superdome and all the opponents for the Sais
[10:32] Speaker 1: could do nothing to help.
[10:34] Speaker 2: No, they could do absolutely nothing. They destroyed that man's legs.
[10:38] Speaker 2: But one of my great white whales, if I can
[10:41] Speaker 2: find it, is a full copy of the game tape
[10:43] Speaker 2: for that 69 Ole Miss Alabama game because that is
[10:46] Speaker 2: the one where he goes full Johnny Manziel. We don't
[10:50] Speaker 2: have a full copy of the game tape for that game.
[10:54] Speaker 2: I think he throws for over 300. He runs for
[10:57] Speaker 2: over 100. He is a monster in that game. A Manning,
[11:01] Speaker 2: I said that out loud, a member of the Manning
[11:03] Speaker 2: family running all over everyone's ass and looking like Grease
[11:07] Speaker 2: Lightning out there.
[11:08] Speaker 1: That's what I keep telling people, man. He had to
[11:11] Speaker 1: be a little bit ashamed while also being like Boys,
[11:16] Speaker 1: the path to safety is in the pocket.
[11:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, he had to do that because that's why he limps. Now,
[11:22] Speaker 2: I think Arch needs to go ahead and at one
[11:26] Speaker 2: point play outside of the playbook. I think that's it.
[11:29] Speaker 2: And I think they know that too. Because if you
[11:32] Speaker 2: want to unleash all of that talent in a form
[11:34] Speaker 2: that everyone can work with and understand, he won't necessarily
[11:38] Speaker 2: be playing within the play, within the X's and O's.
[11:40] Speaker 2: He's going to have to improv. He's going to have
[11:44] Speaker 2: to do some things that are probably going to make
[11:45] Speaker 2: everyone real nervous. It makes coaches nervous when they don't
[11:47] Speaker 2: know what's going to happen on a play. But he's
[11:50] Speaker 2: not totally ready to just operate yet. And this is
[11:53] Speaker 2: not controversial. None of this should be controversial. This is
[11:56] Speaker 2: going to be a first-year full-time starter. Not ready to
[11:59] Speaker 2: operate what can be a kind of complex offense. And
[12:02] Speaker 2: I think that's, again, something that the staff knows and
[12:06] Speaker 2: that down the road you'll see. I mean, I'm excited
[12:10] Speaker 2: because I like these kind of quarterbacks. I do feel
[12:13] Speaker 2: bad for him because when I went to the game
[12:15] Speaker 2: in Austin last year, I saw nothing but Arch Manning jerseys.
[12:20] Speaker 2: He was not the starter, Bo. It was all– Quinn
[12:23] Speaker 2: Ewers was the starter and had been the starter and
[12:25] Speaker 2: had put in a lot of hours and time and
[12:29] Speaker 2: played a lot of games for the Longhorns, and it
[12:30] Speaker 2: was all Manning jerseys. There's no way that in some
[12:34] Speaker 2: way he can't disappoint if they don't– heisman national title
[12:38] Speaker 2: there will be people who will be disappointed.
[12:40] Speaker 1: Well first of all let's not forget quinn ewers came
[12:43] Speaker 1: into college as a bfd himself right and to be
[12:47] Speaker 1: fair to quinn transferred in after i believe he made
[12:52] Speaker 1: some bad decisions but he transferred to texas where he
[12:55] Speaker 1: was probably going to go anyway but he jumped out
[12:57] Speaker 1: to get some short money on some nil and then
[12:59] Speaker 1: couldn't beat out cj stroud At that point, I think
[13:02] Speaker 1: you stay at Ohio State because you're going to be
[13:04] Speaker 1: throwing to something incredible. But instead, he came back to Texas,
[13:07] Speaker 1: and look, it worked out okay. But Quinn's got to
[13:11] Speaker 1: be the best quarterback Texas has since Colt left, right?
[13:14] Speaker 2: I think so.
[13:16] Speaker 1: And everybody's talking about Arch. And it has little to
[13:20] Speaker 1: nothing to do with Arch actually playing football. It is
[13:24] Speaker 1: the damnedest thing. Never seen anything quite like it. But
[13:28] Speaker 1: the thing for Arch, they're a loaded team. And they're
[13:31] Speaker 1: loaded in a way where it's not like when Texas
[13:34] Speaker 1: has been loaded in the past and you still think
[13:36] Speaker 1: somebody's going to push them around, right? They had literally
[13:39] Speaker 1: four seasons around Mac where they did not get pushed around.
[13:43] Speaker 1: And in those four seasons, they lost a combined two
[13:47] Speaker 1: games or three games. Like that's how that goes, right?
[13:52] Speaker 1: This is a Sarkeesian, like they did with so many
[13:56] Speaker 1: programs around the country did, especially in the SEC. get
[13:59] Speaker 1: your Saban guy and hope that you can implement a
[14:02] Speaker 1: Saban like system and hope for the best. It has
[14:06] Speaker 1: not worked out well for everybody. It's working out pretty
[14:10] Speaker 1: well for these guys so far.
[14:12] Speaker 2: If you look at their depth chart and most depth charts,
[14:16] Speaker 2: I use the same thing everyone else uses. I use
[14:19] Speaker 2: our lads.com. If you go there, you can look at
[14:21] Speaker 2: the depth charts and they're pretty frequently updated. They're pretty
[14:24] Speaker 2: up to date. And if you look at any, contemporary
[14:27] Speaker 2: teams chart anyone right now in 2025 you're going to
[14:30] Speaker 2: see a lot of orange orange is the color that
[14:32] Speaker 2: they indicate to um that you have a transfer coming
[14:37] Speaker 2: in for 2025 most rosters look like half orange half
[14:42] Speaker 2: some some more so some like two-thirds orange ironically the
[14:46] Speaker 2: burnt orange of texas two two transfers this is a
[14:51] Speaker 2: homegrown home pick team that has a lot of experience
[14:54] Speaker 2: coming back, a lot of native talent, a lot of
[14:57] Speaker 2: talent that the staff handpicked, recruited, and brought in with
[15:01] Speaker 2: great intent. Wisner running back alone is a concern. They
[15:06] Speaker 2: are going to be heinous to face this year. So
[15:10] Speaker 2: there is an element of don't screw this up. One
[15:13] Speaker 2: more thing on Quinn Ewers, by the way, we don't
[15:15] Speaker 2: talk about injuries in college enough. That guy had some
[15:18] Speaker 2: injuries that just changed the way he threw. I swear...
[15:22] Speaker 2: The deep ball that he threw in year one versus
[15:25] Speaker 2: the deep ball that he threw in year four, those
[15:27] Speaker 2: are two different things. I think he lost something in
[15:31] Speaker 2: the arm through injury, and I'm not exactly sure where
[15:33] Speaker 2: along the line. I don't have his injury chart with
[15:37] Speaker 2: the little body outlined with all of the little Xs
[15:39] Speaker 2: and red marks on it, but I swear injuries changed
[15:43] Speaker 2: his potential at the college level and then consequently at
[15:47] Speaker 2: the pro level. The dude you see now, is not
[15:50] Speaker 2: the dude I think you would have seen had a
[15:52] Speaker 2: couple of injuries and some luck gone one way or
[15:54] Speaker 2: the other.
[15:54] Speaker 1: All right. Now the Texas transfer thing you mentioned is
[15:57] Speaker 1: interesting because the thing I tell people that's a little
[16:00] Speaker 1: bit tricky about that job is that, and look, things
[16:04] Speaker 1: have changed now, the money and the way the money works,
[16:06] Speaker 1: where the geography is, It's still going to be a
[16:11] Speaker 1: dominant factor in where guys go to school, but obviously
[16:14] Speaker 1: it's not as clear and clean as it used to be, right?
[16:17] Speaker 1: People are going to throw some bags around. People are
[16:18] Speaker 1: going to make some different decisions. Okay, cool. But players
[16:22] Speaker 1: typically go close to where they are from for a
[16:24] Speaker 1: number of reasons. The thing that is underrated about Texas
[16:27] Speaker 1: is that, and A & M also, but it's only
[16:31] Speaker 1: close to Texas. Yeah. Right. Like if you you have
[16:35] Speaker 1: to subsist on that program on local talent and nobody else,
[16:38] Speaker 1: by the way, can subsist only on local talent. But
[16:41] Speaker 1: even if you're in Georgia is maybe another program that can.
[16:44] Speaker 1: But by and large, you look at their roster and
[16:45] Speaker 1: they're like, no, we don't. We get the best players
[16:47] Speaker 1: from Georgia, but we got to go everywhere else to
[16:49] Speaker 1: get them. Yeah, but they're close to Charlotte. Right. They're
[16:52] Speaker 1: close to Alabama. They're close to North Florida. They're close
[16:54] Speaker 1: to a whole bunch of places. Austin is close to Houston, Dallas.
[17:00] Speaker 1: And like a circle that kind of goes around there.
[17:03] Speaker 1: That is what they're close to. If they're not getting
[17:05] Speaker 1: it done with local players, it's going to be a problem.
[17:07] Speaker 2: Yeah. And if you doubt the Texas thing is real,
[17:10] Speaker 2: that it's not, that Texas isn't close to anything but Texas,
[17:13] Speaker 2: go look at what they've had to do in Lubbock
[17:14] Speaker 2: to get talent there. Go look at the money that
[17:16] Speaker 2: they've had to drop.
[17:17] Speaker 1: And that's close to less because that ain't even close
[17:20] Speaker 1: to Houston and Dallas.
[17:20] Speaker 2: No, it's close to the moon. That's it. It's the
[17:24] Speaker 2: FBS program that is furthest away from all the other
[17:26] Speaker 2: FBS programs. Like if you triangulate it, the most remote
[17:29] Speaker 2: one It's not Wyoming. It's not like your Boise's. No,
[17:35] Speaker 2: it's Lubbock. Lubbock is the one. And if you go
[17:38] Speaker 2: and look, they've had to drop a tremendous amount of
[17:40] Speaker 2: money just to get talent there. But the upside of
[17:45] Speaker 2: that is, you're right. If you're in Texas, you can
[17:48] Speaker 2: subsist on local talent. You can build a national champion
[17:52] Speaker 2: out of that talent. That's something that South Florida can't
[17:54] Speaker 2: even say anymore. Even Miami. Miami's always had to go
[17:57] Speaker 2: out of their way to get offensive line recruits because
[18:00] Speaker 2: they just don't have the same kind of offensive line recruits.
[18:02] Speaker 2: Go look at their prime lines of the 2000s. They're
[18:06] Speaker 2: getting guys from Canada. They're getting Martin Bibla to come
[18:09] Speaker 2: down to Miami, which easy sell, by the way. Great sell.
[18:13] Speaker 2: Texas has the same sell. Hey, are you tired of
[18:16] Speaker 2: being cold? Do you never want to be cold again?
[18:19] Speaker 2: Do you want to be rich and not cold? Come
[18:23] Speaker 2: on down. Come on down. Can you imagine? That's a
[18:26] Speaker 2: good deal. If you've been cold that long and not
[18:29] Speaker 2: had money and you're 18 years old and somebody's like, hey,
[18:32] Speaker 2: would you like to be big and strong for money?
[18:35] Speaker 2: Would you like to have, let's say, a sum, a
[18:38] Speaker 2: relatively modest sum for a left tackle at this point?
[18:42] Speaker 2: I'm going to pay you 500 grand to come play
[18:44] Speaker 2: in Austin.
[18:45] Speaker 1: Right?
[18:46] Speaker 2: Right. you come on down from whatever farm you just
[18:49] Speaker 2: walked off of and we'll bring you in. And all
[18:51] Speaker 2: of a sudden you're in Austin, Texas and you have
[18:53] Speaker 2: money you don't understand, right? You're like, at the end
[18:56] Speaker 2: of the month, I have that left?
[19:00] Speaker 1: That is actually an underrated part of the NIL thing.
[19:02] Speaker 1: Like what the first paycheck is like. Like I remember
[19:06] Speaker 1: when I was 21, I worked an internship at a
[19:09] Speaker 1: fairly large company. And I remember the internship paid $ 5, 400
[19:17] Speaker 1: a month before tax. It was like they pay you
[19:21] Speaker 1: like you had an MBA or something like that, okay?
[19:23] Speaker 1: And this is in the summer of 2002.
[19:25] Speaker 2: Good God.
[19:26] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes. And I'm staying at my parents' house, okay?
[19:31] Speaker 2: Oh.
[19:33] Speaker 1: So, the first check I got was a one-week check
[19:38] Speaker 1: because of my start date. And that one-week check was
[19:43] Speaker 1: for $ 1, 000. And I looked at my father and I
[19:49] Speaker 1: said to him, you know, I understand a little better
[19:53] Speaker 1: how it is that people sell out. And that was
[19:56] Speaker 1: over $ 1, 000. I know that for many of you, you've
[19:59] Speaker 1: heard this story before, but I've been telling this story
[20:02] Speaker 1: now for almost 25 years. And it still shocks me
[20:05] Speaker 1: to look back on how excited I was at $ 1, 000.
[20:10] Speaker 1: thousand dollars. These motherfuckers are getting taxes, checks after taxes
[20:17] Speaker 1: with like five figures before the dot.
[20:21] Speaker 2: I thought you were going to tell your dad, be like, listen,
[20:24] Speaker 2: you don't have to worry about that mortgage anymore. I
[20:27] Speaker 2: have a thousand dollars.
[20:28] Speaker 1: I got a thousand dollars now.
[20:29] Speaker 2: I'm going to make it happen.
[20:30] Speaker 1: Drake's on me.
[20:31] Speaker 2: Yeah. I love that for them. I despise any effort
[20:37] Speaker 2: to curb that. I think that that is that is
[20:40] Speaker 2: the best part of the current game is that we're
[20:43] Speaker 2: actually paying these players now. I also worry about whether
[20:46] Speaker 2: somebody is trying to sell them PS sixes, right? I
[20:50] Speaker 2: don't even think that's out yet. No, that's what this is.
[20:52] Speaker 2: It's only 10 grand. You can have one before anyone else.
[20:55] Speaker 2: And I've just written in Sharpie on the side of
[20:57] Speaker 2: a PS five, right?
[20:59] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[20:59] Speaker 1: Finally guys can get money and show it right. Like
[21:01] Speaker 1: I was watching good fellows the other day and like
[21:04] Speaker 1: a college football player showed up to jewelry yard is like,
[21:07] Speaker 1: Oh buddy, pull it up with his, with his wife
[21:08] Speaker 1: in the mink.
[21:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, take that back.
[21:11] Speaker 1: Take it back. Buddy with the pink Cadillac on the curb.
[21:13] Speaker 2: It's in my mother's name. It's in my mother's name.
[21:17] Speaker 1: Like, what are you guys doing? What are you guys doing?
[21:18] Speaker 1: Before we get into break, I want to ask this
[21:20] Speaker 1: question right fast. And we'll talk a little more about
[21:22] Speaker 1: it after also, but we'll start now. Is it possible
[21:27] Speaker 1: to win a national championship and be on a hot seat?
[21:31] Speaker 1: Because Ryan Day is testing that. It's not a hot seat, right?
[21:36] Speaker 1: But it's definitely, there's still warmth.
[21:40] Speaker 2: Lukewarm. Just a little hint of warmth. Toasty. If you
[21:44] Speaker 2: got those heated seats in your car, one light. Not
[21:47] Speaker 2: three lights. You're on the one light setting. I don't know.
[21:52] Speaker 1: How many times? Is it five years in a row now?
[21:54] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[21:55] Speaker 1: You lost to Michigan five years in a row.
[21:57] Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
[21:57] Speaker 1: Including to the black guy.
[22:00] Speaker 2: They lost last year, which is the worst loss of
[22:03] Speaker 2: them all. That is the worst one. 13-10 to a
[22:06] Speaker 2: team that had no hope of moving the ball or scoring.
[22:09] Speaker 1: None.
[22:09] Speaker 2: Yes. So are you on the hot seat?
[22:13] Speaker 1: No.
[22:13] Speaker 2: You just won a national title. Do we still have
[22:16] Speaker 2: the same questions about how essential you are to the enterprise?
[22:19] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[22:21] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[22:23] Speaker 1: So the point I try to make to people is
[22:27] Speaker 1: there is only one Alabama. Put a pin in that.
[22:30] Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll come back.
[22:33] Speaker 1: John Cooper had that job for 13 years and beat
[22:37] Speaker 1: Michigan twice. You could say that things are things are
[22:41] Speaker 1: different now, but they're not right. Like if this is
[22:43] Speaker 1: a one win job, which is how we frequently think
[22:46] Speaker 1: of it being is a one win job. No, they're
[22:49] Speaker 1: actually a little more patient with that job than people realize.
[22:52] Speaker 1: Another job that's more patient than people realize is LSU,
[22:55] Speaker 1: which we think of in our heads as a 12
[22:58] Speaker 1: win program. But it's really an over under nine point five.
[23:01] Speaker 2: Right. Right.
[23:02] Speaker 1: Like they even even the Saban era. That's an over-under
[23:08] Speaker 1: 9.5 win program, right? Ohio State's not going to fire
[23:13] Speaker 1: a coach after going 11-2. No. But he might want
[23:17] Speaker 1: to quit. Not that he will actually quit. He just
[23:20] Speaker 1: may have days where he desires to quit if he
[23:23] Speaker 1: loses that job again. By the way, they're favored to
[23:25] Speaker 1: beat Texas. It's going to be number one versus number
[23:26] Speaker 1: two to open the season, and they are favored because
[23:29] Speaker 1: they have the game at home.
[23:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, and should be. And should be. Like, they are.
[23:35] Speaker 2: I mean, defending champion doesn't mean anything when it comes
[23:38] Speaker 2: to this year, but that place at home, rosters that
[23:42] Speaker 2: are comparable in terms of overall talent, that to me
[23:48] Speaker 2: is fair. I think the thing that when we talk
[23:51] Speaker 2: about Ryan Day is we wonder exactly what do you
[23:54] Speaker 2: do here because the apparatus that recruits at Ohio State
[23:58] Speaker 2: and brings all of that talent in, the pipeline, everyone
[24:02] Speaker 2: who is greasing the wheels is If you fire the
[24:04] Speaker 2: head coach, they're not going anywhere. They're all there. I'm
[24:11] Speaker 2: here to tell you they're on board. They're fine. Okay.
[24:15] Speaker 2: That's the machine. It is a football factory and the
[24:19] Speaker 2: floor managers and foreman are on duty and will stay
[24:23] Speaker 2: on duty. Okay. The checks will continue to come. The
[24:26] Speaker 2: bank is still open. So what is the difference that
[24:30] Speaker 2: Brian day provides? Well, Brian day did win a national
[24:33] Speaker 2: title and, did a pretty nice job of managing that roster.
[24:37] Speaker 2: Apparently in this era, he's pretty good at managing egos
[24:40] Speaker 2: and being a pro style kind of like coach, which
[24:46] Speaker 2: is interesting because he appears to be having no fun
[24:49] Speaker 2: doing it. So maybe he is a pro style coach.
[24:50] Speaker 2: You know, NFL coaches just all look like they're like
[24:52] Speaker 2: seconds from death. That's Ryan Day. If you want any
[24:56] Speaker 2: argument for Ohio State being a pro team, It's that
[24:58] Speaker 2: I think their coach would probably walk away for like
[25:02] Speaker 2: a dollar more than what he's doing now. Just leave,
[25:05] Speaker 2: which may be what happens. He may just end up
[25:07] Speaker 2: like resigning out of concern for his well-being because it
[25:11] Speaker 2: is that stressful a job. I think there are some
[25:14] Speaker 2: things that you can look at this season and go,
[25:16] Speaker 2: they have downgraded. And that's in management. That's it. Like
[25:19] Speaker 2: there's no way of getting around the fact that– Yes,
[25:22] Speaker 2: they lost Chip Kelly and they lost Jim Knowles. That
[25:24] Speaker 2: is their offensive coordinator and their defensive coordinator. The pieces
[25:27] Speaker 2: are still incredible. You do not have to worry about that.
[25:30] Speaker 2: But last year they managed an offensive line where they
[25:32] Speaker 2: had to shuffle a couple of things around. They had
[25:33] Speaker 2: to figure some things out. All right. They had to
[25:35] Speaker 2: manage all of that talent and getting everyone the ball, which,
[25:39] Speaker 2: you know, that is a Phil Jackson tier skill in
[25:42] Speaker 2: terms of balancing everyone's feelings and making sure that everyone gets,
[25:46] Speaker 2: you know, enough carries and feels like that they're, you know,
[25:49] Speaker 2: validated and happy. The guy who's doing that this year
[25:54] Speaker 2: is their wide receivers coach, their former wide receivers coach,
[25:58] Speaker 2: Mike Hartline. I'm sorry, Brian Hartline. But Brian Hartline hasn't
[26:03] Speaker 2: really done this job like this before. He hasn't done
[26:07] Speaker 2: it the whole way. It's his shop now. That's going
[26:12] Speaker 2: to look different. They'll be like, oh, the playbook's the same.
[26:15] Speaker 2: It's never exactly the same because the person handling it
[26:18] Speaker 2: and the person running it will put a slightly different
[26:20] Speaker 2: stamp on things. He's been there, obviously, but it's going
[26:24] Speaker 2: to look a little different.
[26:25] Speaker 1: He also seems, by the way, to very clearly be
[26:28] Speaker 1: the best wide receivers coach on earth.
[26:30] Speaker 2: On earth. And a great recruiter.
[26:32] Speaker 1: Has to be. Has to be. All those guys, for
[26:35] Speaker 1: those people listening, those are all him.
[26:37] Speaker 2: Which, like, if you had any incentive to keep someone,
[26:41] Speaker 2: I know ambition's a thing, but if you had any
[26:42] Speaker 2: incentive to keep somebody just doing one thing, he would
[26:45] Speaker 2: be that guy. Right? You're like, oh, you're overpaying your
[26:48] Speaker 2: wide receivers coach. Am I? No. Have you seen what
[26:54] Speaker 2: we've done? Have you seen the talent we found? Have
[26:57] Speaker 2: you seen what we just got in the last year
[26:59] Speaker 2: and a half? Jeremiah Smith, we have a disgusting run
[27:03] Speaker 2: of talent at wide receiver. And the guy who we're
[27:06] Speaker 2: going to talk about this year may be the best
[27:07] Speaker 2: one of all. That's nuts.
[27:09] Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was going to say. And I'll
[27:11] Speaker 1: say this right before we go into this break. What
[27:13] Speaker 1: are you talking about? We got to figure out how
[27:15] Speaker 1: to get everybody else the ball. Okay, so when you
[27:17] Speaker 1: had Henderson and you had Junkers last year and you
[27:20] Speaker 1: got to figure out running backs and all of that, yeah, yeah, yeah,
[27:22] Speaker 1: I get you. Let me tell you something. This year,
[27:24] Speaker 1: we out here running that Bel Air. You know what
[27:27] Speaker 1: I'm saying? We running this like Amari Cooper when he
[27:29] Speaker 1: was at Alabama.
[27:30] Speaker 2: Got a Randy ratio, yeah.
[27:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, we're just going to pass the ball to that
[27:34] Speaker 1: dude as many times as we possibly can because I
[27:38] Speaker 1: promise you he's open.
[27:39] Speaker 2: It's never a bad idea. On the defensive side of
[27:42] Speaker 2: the ball, too, I don't know if you all know this,
[27:44] Speaker 2: Matt Patricia is their defensive coordinator.
[27:46] Speaker 1: Okay, that's a problem.
[27:48] Speaker 2: Might be an issue.
[27:49] Speaker 1: Okay.
[27:50] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
[27:51] Speaker 1: Cause for concern, it's all here. Coming up next, we're
[27:54] Speaker 1: going to talk about the biggest mystery that college football

[29:22] Speaker 1: All right, we are back all with Spencer Hall getting
[29:24] Speaker 1: ready for college football season. Does anybody have any idea
[29:28] Speaker 1: what there is to expect from North Carolina this year?
[29:30] Speaker 2: No. I really don't. And I say that college football
[29:36] Speaker 2: is um a sport of of systems and you know
[29:42] Speaker 2: even more so than like than like pro football because
[29:45] Speaker 2: you have so much talent prospecting to do you have
[29:49] Speaker 2: so much management and you have so much to organize
[29:51] Speaker 2: in terms of how things work day to day and
[29:56] Speaker 2: what happens in the field isn't as complex as what
[29:58] Speaker 2: happens in the nfl it's not like plays are simpler
[30:01] Speaker 2: schemes are simpler, but I think there's an added level
[30:04] Speaker 2: of complexity in terms of, of your roster management in
[30:08] Speaker 2: terms of now we actually have payroll management and you
[30:12] Speaker 2: can call it back. Cause that's what it is. And
[30:14] Speaker 2: then the fact that you have to coexist with this
[30:16] Speaker 2: university and all the weird demands, like everyone kind of
[30:19] Speaker 2: has to cosplay as a student, right? Like, Hey, I'm
[30:22] Speaker 2: going to go do school stuff. Now I've got a backpack. Okay.
[30:28] Speaker 2: You know, Cool. Cool. That's all part of the deal there.
[30:36] Speaker 2: And I don't know what Bill Belichick has in the
[30:40] Speaker 2: bag for that element of it. Sometimes teams just forget
[30:44] Speaker 2: how to do everything all at once. I've seen it.
[30:48] Speaker 2: I have seen it. I've seen it with my own team.
[30:51] Speaker 2: I'm a Florida fan. And in 2010, when Urban Meyer
[30:56] Speaker 2: came back from his breakdown, that team all of a
[30:59] Speaker 2: sudden Didn't know how to do anything. Lost all the coaches.
[31:02] Speaker 2: Lost everyone who sort of remembered how to do things.
[31:05] Speaker 2: And they came out game one and you went, oh, no.
[31:07] Speaker 3: Oh, no.
[31:07] Speaker 2: They forgot how to play football. Like that might happen.
[31:10] Speaker 2: UNC might roll out against Charlotte and we have no
[31:14] Speaker 2: idea what they're doing. Like that might happen. I don't
[31:17] Speaker 2: think that will happen. I think they'll be competent. But,
[31:20] Speaker 2: you know, the idea that they're going to be great
[31:22] Speaker 2: is absurd. Like look at the roster. Look at what
[31:24] Speaker 2: they've got. Look how bad they were on defense at
[31:26] Speaker 2: times last year. Look how ineffective or inconsistent they were
[31:30] Speaker 2: on offense at times last year. I don't think it's
[31:34] Speaker 2: reasonable to expect them to be good. I think they
[31:37] Speaker 2: might be average. And that's probably what you should expect
[31:40] Speaker 2: in year one for most coaching staffs. And I think
[31:43] Speaker 2: that's what you can expect out of this one. The
[31:45] Speaker 2: idea that he'll be different than any coach at this
[31:48] Speaker 2: level is absurd to me, especially when you've seen pro
[31:50] Speaker 2: coaches come back to college and be perfectly average, if
[31:55] Speaker 2: not bad.
[31:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be interesting because they've spent a
[31:58] Speaker 1: lot of money, at least North Carolina's idea of a
[32:02] Speaker 1: lot of money, between Belichick and various things that he
[32:05] Speaker 1: has wanted to get that program off the ground. I
[32:09] Speaker 1: have said many times what did him in with the
[32:12] Speaker 1: Patriots was poor talent evaluation. And he is now in
[32:16] Speaker 1: a sport that is about talent evaluation in a much
[32:20] Speaker 1: different way because it is much more based on present
[32:24] Speaker 1: value and forecasting future value. You know, is it different?
[32:28] Speaker 1: It also would then require Belichick to do a lot
[32:30] Speaker 1: more leaning on other people because you just can't keep
[32:32] Speaker 1: up with everything that you need to keep up with.
[32:34] Speaker 1: I remember one of the first big transfers he got
[32:36] Speaker 1: came in from Holy Cross, which made me very nervous.
[32:39] Speaker 2: Right.
[32:40] Speaker 1: I was like, here we go. Big brain Bill. He's
[32:42] Speaker 1: out here trying to overthink what this situation is. He
[32:47] Speaker 1: is also Bill Belichick. And my concern with him is
[32:52] Speaker 1: asking a college professor to teach pre-algebra. does not always
[32:58] Speaker 1: work out so well. Can he come down to the
[33:00] Speaker 1: level and the capacity that the teenager has and recognize
[33:05] Speaker 1: the actual discipline that the teenagers are going to produce?
[33:08] Speaker 1: I think that's number one there. Number two, you can't
[33:13] Speaker 1: scheme up defense in college. Not really, right? You, like,
[33:18] Speaker 1: every now and then, like, whoever the first people were
[33:20] Speaker 1: that came up with, like, those 3-3-5s or, like, Charlie
[33:23] Speaker 1: Strong with the 4-2. Like, you could come up with
[33:25] Speaker 1: a paradigm change. Maybe they get you ahead of things
[33:28] Speaker 1: and works with what your shortcomings are in talent. But overall,
[33:32] Speaker 1: if you don't have the boys, you can't play defense,
[33:34] Speaker 1: especially not in college.
[33:35] Speaker 2: Well, I... My... I'm going to speak out of turn
[33:40] Speaker 2: here for any coach, but here's what I have observed.
[33:43] Speaker 2: And it is this, that at times, and by the way,
[33:46] Speaker 2: this is, I'm roundabout quoting Bill Belichick here, that when
[33:49] Speaker 2: you get to the third and the fourth quarter, you
[33:51] Speaker 2: have gone from 80 plays on your sheet on both
[33:54] Speaker 2: sides of the ball to two. Like there's only, there's
[33:58] Speaker 2: probably three or four plays that are going to work.
[34:00] Speaker 2: And in college, if you got those guys, and in
[34:02] Speaker 2: the NFL, if you have those guys, but in college,
[34:04] Speaker 2: if you've got those guys, you'd be stupid not to
[34:06] Speaker 2: run them. I want you to go watch Georgia. Go
[34:08] Speaker 2: watch Georgia. Okay. The best managed program. of the last
[34:11] Speaker 2: five or six years of college football. And what you
[34:14] Speaker 2: need to watch is what they do when they're in
[34:15] Speaker 2: trouble and they really need to like bear down and
[34:18] Speaker 2: fix things. They go play like cover one. They play
[34:21] Speaker 2: like basic stuff, pretty basic. And then they just kick
[34:24] Speaker 2: your ass. So when in doubt, be big. When in doubt,
[34:29] Speaker 2: be strong. And when in doubt, be mean. And I
[34:32] Speaker 2: think that's something that Belichick's probably going to hone in on,
[34:36] Speaker 2: but he doesn't have those guys. So if it goes
[34:40] Speaker 2: to a matter of scheme, it won't matter because one,
[34:43] Speaker 2: his team probably won't be able to pull it off.
[34:45] Speaker 2: You know, you talk to, you talk to trainers and
[34:47] Speaker 2: my favorite things, he goes, yeah, if you go to
[34:48] Speaker 2: like one of those small smart schools, they understand the
[34:51] Speaker 2: concept immediately and they can't do it. If you go
[34:53] Speaker 2: to like a big FBS program, like a top 10 program,
[34:57] Speaker 2: they can do whatever you ask them to do, whatever
[35:00] Speaker 2: it is instantly, but they might not understand it. That's,
[35:04] Speaker 2: that's the deal. And I think that's the gap that
[35:06] Speaker 2: Belichick is going to have to bridge because in the
[35:08] Speaker 2: NFL you can cherry pick, big, smart, you can cherry
[35:13] Speaker 2: pick big, smart, big, smart, fast every single time in college,
[35:17] Speaker 2: they might have one of the three. And if they've
[35:19] Speaker 2: got two, they're an all American. And if they got big, smart, fast,
[35:22] Speaker 2: they're an NFL guy, which is 1% of the population
[35:26] Speaker 2: of FBS players. So it's interesting to me, the hiring
[35:30] Speaker 2: of some of the guys that he's brought on board
[35:32] Speaker 2: who just feel like boys just feel like his boys
[35:35] Speaker 2: that doesn't inspire confidence. It doesn't. And again, that's not
[35:39] Speaker 2: against bill. That's against anyone. If you just bring in
[35:41] Speaker 2: a bunch of your dudes, right? Like if you have
[35:43] Speaker 2: anything to worry about at Georgia, for instance, it's the
[35:45] Speaker 2: fact that you go, Hey, all these guys know Kirby
[35:47] Speaker 2: and play with them in the nineties. Ah, like that
[35:50] Speaker 2: just never organizationally. That doesn't feel great.
[35:53] Speaker 1: Right.
[35:53] Speaker 2: Even if the results are still pretty much on par, I,
[35:56] Speaker 2: you know, I don't like that. I like it when
[35:58] Speaker 2: it feels a little more professional. Um, you know, cause
[36:00] Speaker 2: that to me seems like a better environment for like
[36:04] Speaker 2: ideas and managing your culture or whatever. That's really not
[36:09] Speaker 2: what you've seen at UNC. Like at UNC, it feels chummy.
[36:12] Speaker 2: It feels like they've hired a bunch of Belichick's old boys,
[36:14] Speaker 2: including Mike Lombardi. That's the one.
[36:16] Speaker 1: That's the one that tells me, that makes me feel
[36:21] Speaker 1: like this is an unserious operation.
[36:22] Speaker 2: Buddy, pal, pal. I'm going to bust out a pun.
[36:26] Speaker 2: Hold on. Let me reach deep into the Caucasian back here. Buddy,
[36:31] Speaker 2: do you think that's going to work out? Because I'm
[36:33] Speaker 2: going to tell you, as a neutral observer, that doesn't
[36:36] Speaker 2: seem like a great move. I just don't know where
[36:39] Speaker 2: it's worked, and that includes the NFL Network. Yeah, I've
[36:44] Speaker 2: seen the previous work, and counting on this to be
[36:47] Speaker 2: some kind of revolutionary organization that's going to redefine how
[36:51] Speaker 2: we do things at the college level. I heard that
[36:55] Speaker 2: at Arizona State when you brought in Herm Edwards.
[36:57] Speaker 1: That's right.
[36:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think that's what we're going to end
[37:00] Speaker 2: up with. This feels like the over-under on wins is
[37:02] Speaker 2: seven and a half, and Vegas feels a lot smarter
[37:05] Speaker 2: than I do at this point.
[37:06] Speaker 1: Well, hold on. it would be so great if Bill
[37:10] Speaker 1: Belichick had his Antonio Pierce. A great all-time, like the
[37:15] Speaker 1: last great college football renegade because the rules are, and
[37:19] Speaker 1: Antonio was not down there doing renegade stuff with money.
[37:23] Speaker 1: He just had a complete and total absence of respect
[37:29] Speaker 1: for these silly NCAA rules. And that's how you get
[37:33] Speaker 1: Jayden Daniels to come to Arizona State, by the way.
[37:36] Speaker 2: Yeah. What was that man doing there? Like they had him–
[37:40] Speaker 2: if you watch with Jaden Daniels at Arizona State and
[37:42] Speaker 2: the things that they were asking him to do, he
[37:43] Speaker 2: gets to LSU, a place, by the way, not known
[37:46] Speaker 2: for being like revolutionary, not known for being super innovative,
[37:49] Speaker 2: just doing what everyone else does for the most part.
[37:51] Speaker 2: They got him there and they're like, oh, we should
[37:53] Speaker 2: just let you ball. That is not what he was
[37:56] Speaker 2: doing at Arizona State. Yeah, he could end up with
[37:59] Speaker 2: that guy. He could end up with an Antonio Pierce.
[38:02] Speaker 2: He could end up– the idea of Bill Belichick having
[38:04] Speaker 2: the kind of conversations that Nick Saban had, like where
[38:06] Speaker 2: he's making these nuts jokes, right? Because remember– remember nick
[38:10] Speaker 2: saban terrifying reputation but would also make a lot of
[38:15] Speaker 2: jokes about his nuts with players yes that's if you
[38:18] Speaker 2: want to know where water met its level eventually right
[38:21] Speaker 2: it would be that and i don't necessarily see bill
[38:24] Speaker 2: belichick being the same do you think they're going to
[38:26] Speaker 2: pick up on that dry new england wit right do
[38:29] Speaker 2: you do you think they're gonna do you think they're
[38:31] Speaker 2: gonna find that parsimony of words charming i don't think
[38:35] Speaker 2: that do your job is going to sell quite as
[38:37] Speaker 2: well at the college level particularly when their brains haven't
[38:39] Speaker 2: even really fully.
[38:40] Speaker 1: Formed right even if they're getting paid like that's the
[38:43] Speaker 1: thing that i think a lot of these coaches are
[38:44] Speaker 1: going to have to divorce themselves from though we're paying
[38:47] Speaker 1: you to do this it's not going to work like
[38:49] Speaker 1: you think it's just not because they're kids it doesn't
[38:53] Speaker 1: go this.
[38:53] Speaker 2: Way yeah like it's a lot like i think at
[38:58] Speaker 2: that point you think of a salary more as a
[39:00] Speaker 2: bunch of candy and a stocking than you do as
[39:02] Speaker 2: reward for your work you go oh i found this
[39:04] Speaker 2: yes And I think that is probably how the majority
[39:08] Speaker 2: of football players think of it, because it's certainly how
[39:10] Speaker 2: I thought about it when I was like 18 to 22.
[39:12] Speaker 2: You get a paycheck and go, I don't know what
[39:13] Speaker 2: that's for, but we're going to see.
[39:16] Speaker 1: So I'm going to say this right fast before we
[39:18] Speaker 1: get to our last topic. And it's only because you
[39:20] Speaker 1: mentioned the Urban Meyer 2010 season. And Ryan, LSU grad,
[39:24] Speaker 1: and I were talking about this the day that Urban
[39:28] Speaker 1: Meyer's tenure at Florida officially ended was not that first
[39:32] Speaker 1: game i can pinpoint it to a specific moment it
[39:35] Speaker 1: is when lsu played this game at the swap and
[39:39] Speaker 1: called a fake field goal that involved the punter i
[39:42] Speaker 1: mean the holder throwing the ball over his shoulder to
[39:46] Speaker 1: the kicker, who I believe walked in for a touchdown.
[39:49] Speaker 2: He did. It was a great call.
[39:51] Speaker 1: And in the postgame, when they asked Urban Meyer a
[39:56] Speaker 1: question about Les Miles, and all he could do was
[40:00] Speaker 1: wave his hand to shush the question away because Les
[40:05] Speaker 1: Miles broke that man's spirit that day. That was the
[40:09] Speaker 1: day it ended.
[40:09] Speaker 2: Cooked, fried, done. I thought the same thing when I
[40:12] Speaker 2: saw Matt Stafford heading into like some sort of quackery
[40:16] Speaker 2: Airstream trailer. And they're like, yeah, it's back hurt. So
[40:17] Speaker 2: he's going to get infrared treatment on it. You're like, Don, Don,
[40:20] Speaker 2: that man's like, no, don't you. But as Charles McDonald
[40:24] Speaker 2: would say, nobody used to have a bad back.
[40:28] Speaker 1: That's a great, Charles McDonald who has a bad back.
[40:30] Speaker 2: Who has a bad back. Younger than me. Oh yeah,
[40:33] Speaker 2: like I should call, like borrowing some lingo here, I
[40:37] Speaker 2: should call Charles McDonald unk. That is how old man
[40:40] Speaker 2: style works. Charles McDonald lives, and he talks about having
[40:44] Speaker 2: a bad back more than I do, and I'm much
[40:45] Speaker 2: older than Charles.
[40:46] Speaker 1: That is a great line. Some have had back injuries,
[40:50] Speaker 1: but you are correct. If you say you have a
[40:51] Speaker 1: bad back, nobody has a bad back.
[40:53] Speaker 3: J.A.
[40:53] Speaker 1: Adade always tells this story about this quote from Kobe
[40:56] Speaker 1: about taking charges that J.A. refers to as charges are
[40:59] Speaker 1: for suckers. And he asked Kobe about taking charges. He
[41:03] Speaker 1: was like, I saw Bird take a lot of charges.
[41:05] Speaker 1: He got a fucked up back, and that's Kobe talking,
[41:08] Speaker 1: not me. He's like, I saw Scottie Pippen take a
[41:10] Speaker 1: lot of charges. He's got a fucked up back. I
[41:12] Speaker 1: saw Dennis Rotman take a lot of charges. He's got
[41:15] Speaker 1: a fucked up back. I never saw Magic take any charges.
[41:19] Speaker 1: His back is just fine. I never saw Mike take
[41:22] Speaker 1: any charges. His back is just fine. He's like, I'm
[41:27] Speaker 1: not about to be on team bad back.
[41:30] Speaker 2: Coach K is like the king of take the charge, right?
[41:33] Speaker 2: You've seen Coach K laying on the court in the
[41:35] Speaker 2: middle of a game? Not taking a charge.
[41:40] Speaker 1: I would love to see a Duke old timers game
[41:43] Speaker 1: with just a bunch of people walking around with bad backs.
[41:45] Speaker 1: Let's go find out Shea Battier. How's that working?
[41:49] Speaker 2: I need to listen. Any running back who runs out
[41:51] Speaker 2: of bounds.
[41:51] Speaker 1: Kudos.
[41:52] Speaker 2: Kudos to you. OK, because you know what they are?
[41:56] Speaker 2: at yoga class playing a little pickleball getting a quick
[42:00] Speaker 2: 18 in have you seen eric dickerson looks.
[42:02] Speaker 1: Awesome franco harris rest in peace but franco harris considering
[42:06] Speaker 1: the era of football that he played in franco harris
[42:09] Speaker 1: made it a long way walking upright franco harris.
[42:12] Speaker 2: Was an innovator though innovator because no one at the
[42:14] Speaker 2: time was doing that franco was like yeah this is
[42:16] Speaker 2: stupid I'm going to be over here. They're like, you're
[42:21] Speaker 2: not a real man. I'll be a real man when
[42:23] Speaker 2: I'm 50.
[42:24] Speaker 1: As a fullback.
[42:25] Speaker 2: As a fullback.
[42:26] Speaker 1: Even a halfback. It was a fullback. How is this
[42:28] Speaker 1: even an option? How does the fullback have the option
[42:32] Speaker 1: to consistently run out of bounds?
[42:33] Speaker 2: The fullback, by the way, checking his spending on his app, right?
[42:37] Speaker 2: That's what he was doing. He was like, I've spent
[42:39] Speaker 2: $ 50 worth of contact today. Boys, I'm overdrawn. Stepping out
[42:42] Speaker 2: of bounds.
[42:43] Speaker 1: I bet Ted Gann feels excellent every day he wakes up.
[42:46] Speaker 2: Oh, Jerry Rice? Like Jerry Rice. You know, go look
[42:51] Speaker 2: up Jerry Rice big hits. It's a very short YouTube video.
[42:55] Speaker 2: It is.
[42:56] Speaker 3: It is.
[42:56] Speaker 1: It's like looking up people who dunked on Tim Duncan.
[42:58] Speaker 1: Not a lot of those. He did it the opposite
[43:00] Speaker 1: way of Shaq, where Shaq was just going to take
[43:02] Speaker 1: you to the ground.
[43:04] Speaker 2: Yeah. Tim Duncan was Captain Technique. By the way, Tim Duncan,
[43:08] Speaker 2: side note, cut this if you want. I hadn't seen
[43:11] Speaker 2: the Bill Russell video with him. I pray in life
[43:15] Speaker 2: to get a compliment as half as good as that.
[43:17] Speaker 2: Where Bill Russell says, yeah, Jackie Robinson asked me to
[43:19] Speaker 2: be a pallbearer at his funeral because he said I
[43:21] Speaker 2: was his favorite athlete. And that's what you are to me.
[43:24] Speaker 2: That's what he said to Tim Duncan. I would have cried.
[43:29] Speaker 1: On the spot. I would have cried. I now hear
[43:32] Speaker 1: that and I want to say to Tim Duncan. What'd
[43:35] Speaker 1: you go do for the people after that, brother? You
[43:38] Speaker 1: got to step this shit up now, homeboy.
[43:41] Speaker 2: Is it not a very Tim Duncan thing to hear
[43:43] Speaker 2: that though and go, wow. And then like next day
[43:46] Speaker 2: be like, oh, I don't know. I'm just going to
[43:48] Speaker 2: hang out. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah.
[43:51] Speaker 1: It was all right. So you and I have talked
[43:56] Speaker 1: about this for a while and it still worked out.
[43:59] Speaker 1: We have a whole generation of people who really still
[44:02] Speaker 1: don't know what this Alabama thing truly means. because Nick
[44:06] Speaker 1: Saban kept the Wolves at bay. He was so good,
[44:10] Speaker 1: so consistently, for so long that we never saw Alabama
[44:15] Speaker 1: get there. Keep in mind, the one time Bear Bryant
[44:19] Speaker 1: had a bad season after their little segregation has gone
[44:23] Speaker 1: too far period, and they got the wishbone in and
[44:27] Speaker 1: then took everything back. Bear Bryant had one bad season,
[44:30] Speaker 1: and a month later, he died.
[44:32] Speaker 2: Yes! Yep.
[44:35] Speaker 1: Not exaggerate. Yeah. And he said that Alabama deserved a
[44:39] Speaker 1: better coach. And I know he meant that somewhat metaphorically,
[44:42] Speaker 1: but I also know he understood like even that monster
[44:47] Speaker 1: would eat, even him up last year, Alabama lost four games.
[44:53] Speaker 1: If somehow they lost four games this year, what does
[44:58] Speaker 1: that look like?
[44:59] Speaker 2: Bad. It's bad. It's it's, it's already bad. That's a,
[45:03] Speaker 2: It's not a riot type situation, but it's definitely disgruntled, unhappy,
[45:08] Speaker 2: and probably already thinking about the next thing if they
[45:11] Speaker 2: lose four games. It also depends on what four games
[45:14] Speaker 2: they are. Losing to Auburn is inexcusable. Losing to a
[45:18] Speaker 2: team that they think is a tier below them is inexcusable.
[45:20] Speaker 2: Losing to Tennessee. Let's put that watermark right there. If
[45:24] Speaker 2: they lose to Tennessee, who is formally a rival, but
[45:28] Speaker 2: not functionally a rival in the minds of most Alabama fans.
[45:31] Speaker 2: If they lose to Tennessee... again. And if they lose,
[45:35] Speaker 2: particularly in sort of a hard-nosed manner. Last year's Alabama team,
[45:38] Speaker 2: very weird because they are a transitional team. They were
[45:41] Speaker 2: kind of a platypus team. There's a lot of different
[45:43] Speaker 2: parts that didn't necessarily fit. Jalen Milrow was the quarterback,
[45:46] Speaker 2: and I think having a quarterback like Jalen Milrow when
[45:49] Speaker 2: he is obviously too talented not to play, and too
[45:52] Speaker 2: athletic not to play, but has limitations on his game,
[45:56] Speaker 2: that is you're going to be kind of a boom-bust team.
[45:59] Speaker 2: You're going to be the kind of team that sometimes
[46:01] Speaker 2: scores 35 and sometimes you score 13 because he was
[46:05] Speaker 2: that inconsistent, but that gifted at the same time. So
[46:07] Speaker 2: I think that they had the golden handcuffs of a
[46:11] Speaker 2: very gifted quarterback who couldn't exactly play the position the
[46:14] Speaker 2: way they wanted to. Now they're going to have a
[46:17] Speaker 2: less talented quarterback potentially, at least in terms of raw
[46:21] Speaker 2: athletic talent and potential, you know, Jalen Milrow.
[46:24] Speaker 1: He's a ghost of five-star pass worth noting.
[46:27] Speaker 3: Right.
[46:27] Speaker 2: Right. You know, like Jalen Milrow, 80-yard arm, capable of
[46:32] Speaker 2: busting a 70-yarder, and then also capable of just mismanaging
[46:36] Speaker 2: the offense because he couldn't operate it at the level
[46:40] Speaker 2: that the coaches wanted him to in terms of efficiency.
[46:44] Speaker 2: And that's all it is, is efficiency. When we're talking
[46:46] Speaker 2: about efficiency, it's take your check down, hit your check
[46:48] Speaker 2: down accurately. Recognize this. Get out of a bad play.
[46:52] Speaker 2: Get into a better play. Don't turn the ball over.
[46:55] Speaker 2: He was the kind of guy who They lived with
[46:58] Speaker 2: the bust so that they could enjoy the booms. But
[47:02] Speaker 2: that combined with, you know, some like a new regime
[47:05] Speaker 2: on defense, that'll get you four losses. That'll get you
[47:07] Speaker 2: some inconsistent play. They don't necessarily, this is still, by
[47:12] Speaker 2: the way, I don't want anybody to lose sight of this.
[47:15] Speaker 2: This is still a top five roster in college football
[47:19] Speaker 2: in terms of sheer raw talent. This is still nothing
[47:24] Speaker 2: but four and five stars, right? This is this is
[47:26] Speaker 2: nothing but if we're doing movies, this is nothing but
[47:29] Speaker 2: a bunch of Lawrence Arabias. This is nothing but a
[47:31] Speaker 2: bunch of Casablancas. Right. Like this is classics across the shelf.
[47:36] Speaker 2: So on that alone, you can't rule them out in
[47:38] Speaker 2: terms of national title contention. You can't rule them out
[47:40] Speaker 2: in terms of SEC championship contention. But what they look
[47:44] Speaker 2: like this year, it's it's going to be it's going
[47:48] Speaker 2: to look a lot like that Washington team offensively. Right. Because,
[47:51] Speaker 2: you know, they've got the band back together on the
[47:53] Speaker 2: coaching staff. You know, they have Ty Simpson at quarterback,
[47:56] Speaker 2: who I think is going to be a less spectacular
[47:59] Speaker 2: option than Milrow, but probably more more efficient in terms
[48:03] Speaker 2: of what they want down to down. They also have
[48:07] Speaker 2: Caden Proctor at left tackle. I need you to go
[48:09] Speaker 2: look up Caden Proctor. Yes. You might be able to
[48:12] Speaker 2: find him on Google Maps. Like he might be listed
[48:15] Speaker 2: as a building. He is. And I'm not like they've
[48:18] Speaker 2: had specimens at Alabama before. They've had guys. Who defy
[48:23] Speaker 2: what you believe a human being is capable of in
[48:26] Speaker 2: terms of size and power. Caden Proctor squatted 800 pounds.
[48:31] Speaker 1: Check your phone for what I just texted you about
[48:33] Speaker 1: Caden Proctor. You're not going to want to say it
[48:36] Speaker 1: out loud.
[48:38] Speaker 2: Can I say it out loud?
[48:39] Speaker 1: I'll let you look at it and make that decision.
[48:42] Speaker 2: I'm not going to.
[48:43] Speaker 1: I think you're going to vote against it. But just
[48:44] Speaker 1: look at what he says. Just look at what he says.
[48:47] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[48:47] Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm going to let the listener or viewer in
[48:52] Speaker 2: on this. I have a piece of information about Caden
[48:54] Speaker 2: Proctor and his family that would indicate to me that 6'7,
[48:58] Speaker 2: 369 with an 800-pound squat. is standard whatever the if
[49:04] Speaker 2: you go to the proctor family reunion there's a semi
[49:07] Speaker 2: truck there's a semi truck of food okay like the
[49:11] Speaker 2: cisco truck they back the whole thing.
[49:13] Speaker 1: Up he's not alone he's not alone but i tell
[49:15] Speaker 1: you this but whatever he gave, he's supposed to, because
[49:17] Speaker 1: here's Rob, here's Rob counting those losses that are going
[49:19] Speaker 1: to make Caden DeBoer regret his choices.
[49:22] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[49:23] Speaker 1: They got to add Georgia. Um, they got to add
[49:27] Speaker 1: South Carolina and that's still a, we going to see situation, right?
[49:32] Speaker 1: It's still, I don't care what the top, whatever they read,
[49:34] Speaker 1: it's still South Carolina. Um, They have Oklahoma, I mean, oh,
[49:39] Speaker 1: LSU at home, where LSU, we're going to learn a
[49:43] Speaker 1: lot about how they feel about Brian Kelly based on
[49:46] Speaker 1: what he does with this roster. That's three, and Tennessee,
[49:50] Speaker 1: South Carolina, LSU, all in a row with Oklahoma right
[49:54] Speaker 1: after that, right? This, I don't know what exactly the
[49:59] Speaker 1: expectations are. I just know losing four games two years
[50:03] Speaker 1: in a row is your seat will be ablaze for
[50:07] Speaker 1: year three. You'll get year three and you'll get a
[50:10] Speaker 1: brick thrown through your window.
[50:12] Speaker 2: It could be bad. I do like, I will say this,
[50:15] Speaker 2: like we, I want two things to stand here. One,
[50:19] Speaker 2: this could go bad in a hurry. It could go
[50:21] Speaker 2: bad real fast. And if it's not a fit and
[50:24] Speaker 2: they don't play like great football, not good. They have
[50:28] Speaker 2: to be great. That is the standard there. It could
[50:30] Speaker 2: go sideways super fast. Super fast. They will get you
[50:33] Speaker 2: out of there because, again, like Ryan Day, the factory's fine.
[50:39] Speaker 2: We can put a new name on the nameplate, but
[50:42] Speaker 2: everybody on the floor and the systems and how we
[50:44] Speaker 2: make things, the football factory's going to be there. You're
[50:48] Speaker 2: not that important as a head coach. You're not. You
[50:51] Speaker 2: might be once a generation, but ultimately, even Nick Saban,
[50:54] Speaker 2: over a long enough span of time, would have been
[50:57] Speaker 2: replaced because that's what happened to Bear Bryant. If Nick
[51:01] Speaker 2: Saban started to fall off, OK, not these sort of
[51:05] Speaker 2: like little indications that he was falling off that over
[51:07] Speaker 2: the last like two to three years in terms of
[51:09] Speaker 2: replacing coaching talent or recruiting. And it was never really recruiting.
[51:13] Speaker 2: It was talent development. No, we're talking about a big
[51:16] Speaker 2: fall off. They would have replaced him.
[51:18] Speaker 1: I just I'm interested.
[51:20] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[51:21] Speaker 1: The difference between Ohio State and Alabama is the floor.
[51:25] Speaker 1: The floor at Ohio State is much higher. much much
[51:30] Speaker 1: higher you don't have a whole lot of those disaster
[51:32] Speaker 1: piece theater seasons there is no uh 2000 2000 that's
[51:37] Speaker 1: the year i'm looking for the three and eight year
[51:39] Speaker 1: the mike devos yeah you don't have you don't have
[51:41] Speaker 1: those in the ohio state ledger i think.
[51:44] Speaker 2: They lose they lose to ucf at home.
[51:46] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah it doesn't go down louisiana monroe remember that
[51:48] Speaker 1: one yeah well yeah and that's that that is the
[51:51] Speaker 1: bottom right like that is the that is the bottom
[51:54] Speaker 1: the bottom could be five wins like when things fall
[51:57] Speaker 1: apart at Alabama.
[51:57] Speaker 2: You could have a four-win season if everything goes wrong.
[52:01] Speaker 2: I don't understand how you could do that with this
[52:03] Speaker 2: current roster, but if DeBoer's recruiting were to fall off
[52:07] Speaker 2: at any point, that's where you go, okay, you can't
[52:10] Speaker 2: fall off recruiting-wise at Alabama because look at everyone around you.
[52:13] Speaker 2: Look at everyone around you. They will eat straight off
[52:15] Speaker 2: your plate with no apologies. And on either side, on
[52:20] Speaker 2: every side, you'll have guys who do that. But I
[52:23] Speaker 2: like what they, like I will say this, that's all
[52:24] Speaker 2: very negative. I like This staff, I like the roster.
[52:29] Speaker 2: I like their approach. I think everything could work there
[52:33] Speaker 2: and work right now. They're not chasing a ghost of
[52:36] Speaker 2: a former glory by hiring someone who did something a
[52:39] Speaker 2: long time ago, which is what Auburn did. Auburn essentially
[52:42] Speaker 2: hired a guy because of what he did a decade ago.
[52:46] Speaker 1: Which was win two games against Alabama. 14-50.
[52:48] Speaker 2: That's it. You want to know why Hugh Freeze is
[52:50] Speaker 2: cashing checks? He's cashing checks in the larger sense because
[52:54] Speaker 2: in 2014 and 2015– They beat Ole Miss, beat Alabama
[52:58] Speaker 2: back to back, including once in Tuscaloosa off of one
[53:01] Speaker 2: of the wildest quarterback games ever played by Chad Kelly.
[53:04] Speaker 2: The other reason that he's currently employed is because is
[53:08] Speaker 2: because last year when they were down, they beat A & M.
[53:11] Speaker 2: That was it. Like they otherwise that was their only
[53:13] Speaker 2: win over a team with a winning record last year.
[53:16] Speaker 2: And they might have gotten him out had he not
[53:18] Speaker 2: won that game in particular.
[53:21] Speaker 1: I will say one last thing before we go, because
[53:24] Speaker 1: you mentioned earlier them games where the grease is hot,
[53:26] Speaker 1: the grease is popping. There is nothing quite like that
[53:29] Speaker 1: young quarterback out there in a grease popping game. And
[53:33] Speaker 1: if you've ever been to one in person, you never
[53:35] Speaker 1: forget it. So one I did not go to in person,
[53:38] Speaker 1: but we remember that year that Ohio State won the
[53:40] Speaker 1: national championship, the Cardale Jones season. They were they had
[53:44] Speaker 1: JT Barrett. Underrated, kind of all-time. He's like the original
[53:49] Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. All-time great college football player who was often
[53:52] Speaker 1: a limiting factor on a team that he quarterbacked. But
[53:55] Speaker 1: his first start was a game against Navy. His second start,
[53:58] Speaker 1: he got introduced to a man named Bud Foster. Bud
[54:01] Speaker 1: Foster wore his ass out. And I knew that that
[54:05] Speaker 1: was going to happen because I had gone to a
[54:07] Speaker 1: game in 08. It was Carolina and Virginia Tech. And
[54:10] Speaker 1: Carolina had a really talented team that year. And they
[54:13] Speaker 1: had an NFL quarterback. They had three drafted receivers. Like,
[54:18] Speaker 1: Butch Davis had started to get the thing up and humming, right? Yeah.
[54:22] Speaker 2: T.J.
[54:22] Speaker 1: Yates gets hurt in the third quarter. They go to
[54:25] Speaker 1: a kid named Mike Paulus. His brother Greg played point
[54:28] Speaker 1: guard at Duke, but Mike Paulus was a high four-star recruit.
[54:31] Speaker 1: He was a quarterback of the future type. The first
[54:34] Speaker 1: play after Yates got hurt, they ran an off-tackle play
[54:38] Speaker 1: or something to Greg, a little score to touchdown. Fourth
[54:40] Speaker 1: quarter comes, and I had never done this kind of
[54:44] Speaker 1: game before. I was on the sidelines for the last drive,
[54:48] Speaker 1: and it was Mike Paulus on one side, and it
[54:50] Speaker 1: was Bud Foster's Virginia Tech defense. on the other side
[54:54] Speaker 1: and i watched a man's career in before it started
[54:57] Speaker 1: i ain't never seen nothing like that before in my
[54:59] Speaker 1: life i don't know how in the hell he i
[55:00] Speaker 1: think it really crystallized for me what the job is
[55:02] Speaker 1: that you're asking of a quarterback them boys was in
[55:04] Speaker 1: there fast fast and he had no idea what to do.
[55:08] Speaker 2: Yeah one thing you could do to break up a
[55:10] Speaker 2: spread offense that relies on you know qb reed relies
[55:15] Speaker 2: on you know i'm gonna look this way and see
[55:17] Speaker 2: if your ends crash and i'll come around There's a
[55:19] Speaker 2: great way to deal with that. Tackle everybody. That's it.
[55:22] Speaker 2: So Bud Foster ran the 4-6. The 4-6 has not
[55:26] Speaker 2: been a major force in football since the mid-80s. It
[55:29] Speaker 2: was the Jurassic Park situation where they go, hey, you
[55:33] Speaker 2: know what? I think a T-Rex would do really well
[55:35] Speaker 2: in this environment. Let's just let it loose. Let's see.
[55:38] Speaker 2: When the 4-6 comes out, I want you to know
[55:40] Speaker 2: what this means. Your center, who hikes the ball, has
[55:43] Speaker 2: a nose tackle. The biggest, fattest, meanest guy on the defense.
[55:47] Speaker 2: And he's lined up head on He's lined up head
[55:50] Speaker 2: on to the center. No gap control to worry about
[55:52] Speaker 2: for him. No, oh, I got to go ahead and control. No,
[55:55] Speaker 2: his annihilate. That's it. His whole job is to annihilate
[55:59] Speaker 2: the guy who only has one hand to block with
[56:01] Speaker 2: that snap. That's it. It is a beautiful, sometimes suicidal
[56:07] Speaker 2: approach to defense. Ohio State could not handle it. They
[56:10] Speaker 2: could not. It was just like watching somebody get hit
[56:12] Speaker 2: with a sledgehammer for four quarters.
[56:14] Speaker 1: Strategy of the 46 is very simple. We're going to
[56:17] Speaker 1: make it impossible for you to run. Therefore, you're going
[56:19] Speaker 1: to pass, except there'll be no time.
[56:21] Speaker 2: There will be no time because that six stands for?
[56:25] Speaker 2: Six linebackers. Six linebackers, okay? They're not there to do
[56:30] Speaker 2: pass coverage. They're not there to be doing anything smart.
[56:34] Speaker 2: They're there to play kill you. That's it. It's one
[56:37] Speaker 2: of my favorite defensive wrinkles of all time. By the way,
[56:40] Speaker 2: not a great Virginia Tech team. No, they just had
[56:43] Speaker 2: the answer that day. which was awesome to watch.
[56:46] Speaker 1: Great team that won a national championship against a quarterback
[56:49] Speaker 1: who I believe that year was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
[56:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. A great team that just got a quiz
[56:56] Speaker 2: that it did not study for.
[56:58] Speaker 1: At all and failed it badly. A team so great
[57:01] Speaker 1: that it could win a national championship with its third-string
[57:03] Speaker 1: quarterback and its offensive coordinator being Tom Herman. Just throwing
[57:09] Speaker 1: that out there.
[57:10] Speaker 2: You said it.
[57:12] Speaker 1: Spencer Hall, check out the Shutdown Fullcast. Check out Channel 6.
