Bomani Jones is joined by Danny Parkins of FS1's "First Things First". They start the show by reacting to the Eagles overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and discuss why Jalen Hurts is the most confusing quarterback in the NFL. Later, they discuss Shedeur Sanders being named the Browns' starting quarterback for the rest of the season and consider why he is such a polarizing topic. Finally, they react to the news of Phillip Rivers potentially returning to the Indianapolis Colts even though he is a grandfather. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:11] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
[0:22] Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Check him out on First
[0:25] Speaker 1: Things First, five o'clock Eastern on FS1. Danny Parkins, what's
[0:29] Speaker 1: going on? Bo, good to be back, man. How you doing?
[0:32] Speaker 2: How you doing?
[0:33] Speaker 1: I'm good, man. Did you get out of Nick's house
[0:35] Speaker 1: before the Chiefs game started, or did you stick around?
[0:37] Speaker 1: I got out.
[0:38] Speaker 2: I got out.
[0:40] Speaker 1: And I didn't even send him any texts.
[0:44] Speaker 2: Not any taunting texts, which I thought showed tremendous restraint
[0:48] Speaker 2: because Wilds and Brew and Nick, even though Nick was
[0:51] Speaker 2: sitting three feet to my right, were sending texts in
[0:54] Speaker 2: the group chat after the Caleb interception. And I don't
[0:58] Speaker 2: know if it's because they respect me less or I'm
[1:00] Speaker 2: like a new guy and it's a hazing situation. There
[1:03] Speaker 2: were no texts mocking him during the Chiefs game. And
[1:06] Speaker 2: I got all of it.
[1:07] Speaker 1: Well, that is a reflection, not of how little respect
[1:13] Speaker 1: they have for you, but their understanding that you're not
[1:16] Speaker 1: going to harm yourself. That's true. Right now. Do I
[1:20] Speaker 1: think Nick would harm himself under those circumstances? Of course not.
[1:24] Speaker 1: Can I guarantee you? No.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, so Nick came to my spot during the Colts
[1:32] Speaker 2: game because my mom was in town and he's known
[1:35] Speaker 2: my mom for a while because it was around Thanksgiving.
[1:38] Speaker 2: But he said, he was like, I am a little
[1:42] Speaker 2: nervous at how I'm going to behave. And I'm like, buddy,
[1:44] Speaker 2: I'm a little nervous too. I'm a little nervous too,
[1:49] Speaker 2: but she's seen, she's seen it all. So it'll be fine.
[1:52] Speaker 2: And then there he was down on two knees, basically
[1:55] Speaker 2: praying at my television as the chiefs pulled that off,
[1:58] Speaker 2: just making a fool of himself.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Now, when his team lost a Superbowl to his nemesis,
[2:03] Speaker 1: Tom Brady, I was not there, but I sent a
[2:05] Speaker 1: text to his wife and said, is he okay? And
[2:08] Speaker 1: the response was quite simply, No. Yeah, that's right. That
[2:13] Speaker 1: was it. That was that was it. That was matter
[2:15] Speaker 1: of fact. But can you imagine if he rooted for
[2:17] Speaker 1: the Eagles? This is OK. So you and I have
[2:21] Speaker 1: both done a good bit of radio. Right. And you
[2:24] Speaker 1: know what it's like. When you see what's going on
[2:27] Speaker 1: and you're like, all I got to do tomorrow is
[2:29] Speaker 1: say the phone number, right? If I want to do
[2:32] Speaker 1: a show with my own content, I can. Or we
[2:36] Speaker 1: could just screen through all this brilliance that's not actually brilliance,
[2:40] Speaker 1: but is radio brilliance. that is going to come through.
[2:43] Speaker 1: And I feel like that's what it has to be
[2:45] Speaker 1: five days a week. If you do radio in Philadelphia,
[2:49] Speaker 1: I would never have anything prepared. I would only show
[2:52] Speaker 1: up to work with my keys and my wallet. I
[2:55] Speaker 1: don't need to log onto my computer. I don't need
[2:57] Speaker 1: to know anything because after last night where, okay, guys, yes,
[3:06] Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts had five turnovers in a matter of speak.
[3:10] Speaker 1: But I don't feel comfortable giving him the two turnovers
[3:16] Speaker 1: that were on the same play. And you're like, gee, Bomani,
[3:18] Speaker 1: what do you mean he had two turnovers on the
[3:19] Speaker 1: same play? Never seen it. Through an interception, the interception
[3:23] Speaker 1: was fumbled, which is something the Chargers fans know about
[3:25] Speaker 1: in the worst way possible. Jalen Hurts recovers it, and
[3:29] Speaker 1: then he gets hit, and he fumbles again, and the
[3:32] Speaker 1: other team went and took it. He had four interceptions
[3:37] Speaker 1: in this game. Um... It was bad. It was bad.
[3:40] Speaker 1: It was not a good look. By the way, the
[3:43] Speaker 1: Chargers barely won. This was not encouraging, I would say,
[3:46] Speaker 1: for them. But they're a one-handed quarterback who, actually, I
[3:50] Speaker 1: got to give him credit. He was playing like a
[3:52] Speaker 1: two-handed quarterback. I don't really understand how exactly that happened,
[3:56] Speaker 1: but if I was him, I wouldn't have been doing
[3:57] Speaker 1: all that unnecessary clapping, right? Like, chill out, homie. You
[4:01] Speaker 1: can show your love another way. But I can't imagine
[4:05] Speaker 1: having anything tethered to the Eagles right now, because is
[4:08] Speaker 1: losing out on the board. We've seen them do this before.
[4:12] Speaker 2: Right. A lot of people are invoking 2023 and that
[4:16] Speaker 2: collapse where they lost five of six down the stretch
[4:21] Speaker 2: and then got blown out in that playoff game. There's
[4:24] Speaker 2: a lot there, but you're right about the radio thing.
[4:27] Speaker 2: It's like you go in, you say the phone number,
[4:29] Speaker 2: and then the first five calls will be like, what's
[4:31] Speaker 2: Nick Foles doing?
[4:33] Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
[4:34] Speaker 2: People just saying all sorts of irrational shit that is
[4:36] Speaker 2: going to be objectively hilarious. Maybe we should call Doug Peterson.
[4:41] Speaker 2: So yeah, that is just red meat to the base.
[4:45] Speaker 2: And Jalen Hurts is one of the toughest quarterbacks to
[4:50] Speaker 2: figure out that I can remember. Because to me, and
[4:54] Speaker 2: I like to try to think of myself as a
[4:56] Speaker 2: guy who watches the games but also understands the stats
[4:59] Speaker 2: and the analytics, my eyes tell me he is not
[5:05] Speaker 2: a good.
[5:05] Speaker 1: Thrower of the football.
[5:07] Speaker 2: Yes. Their actions tell me that they do not think
[5:11] Speaker 2: he is a good thrower of the football. Their highly paid,
[5:16] Speaker 2: objectively highly talented wide receivers seem to think he's not
[5:21] Speaker 2: a very skilled thrower of the football. And then in
[5:24] Speaker 2: the Super Bowl... plural he balls out so.
[5:28] Speaker 1: I don't I don't know I'm like I'm like well
[5:30] Speaker 1: damn okay.
[5:31] Speaker 2: So he's a gamer he's clutch he's a leader like
[5:34] Speaker 2: all of those things I give him his flowers for
[5:36] Speaker 2: he's tough he's a good runner he's a weapon all
[5:40] Speaker 2: of those things but man like Of the five turnovers,
[5:45] Speaker 2: the one that was the worst was the last one.
[5:48] Speaker 1: You can't make that throw. You just can't.
[5:51] Speaker 2: You're moving down the field with relative ease, field goal
[5:55] Speaker 2: to tie, touchdown to win. The underneath stuff was open
[5:58] Speaker 2: the whole drive. The underneath stuff was open on that throw,
[6:02] Speaker 2: and you force it down the field, and two different
[6:04] Speaker 2: guys had a shot at the interception. That's just a
[6:06] Speaker 2: decision and a throw you cannot make. He doesn't have
[6:08] Speaker 2: that arm. He doesn't have that pinpoint accuracy. If the
[6:13] Speaker 2: decision-making and the clutchness, whatever stock you put into that trait,
[6:18] Speaker 2: is going to erode for him, he's a below-average player.
[6:23] Speaker 1: The first thing I want to say, they will not
[6:25] Speaker 1: lose out as they get the Raiders, the Commandos, the Bills,
[6:30] Speaker 1: and the Commandos again. So they're probably going 3-1 on
[6:34] Speaker 1: the way out. But I'm here to tell you, if
[6:36] Speaker 1: they go call it 1-3 on the way out, That
[6:40] Speaker 1: means they're going to lose in the first round. And
[6:42] Speaker 1: that means it's going to be a, everything was go
[6:44] Speaker 1: sale on some level, right? Like there's, they have a
[6:48] Speaker 1: team that is incredibly talented at a head coach. Who's first,
[6:51] Speaker 1: what is it? Four years are as good as anybody's
[6:54] Speaker 1: first four years is you'll ever be able to think
[6:56] Speaker 1: of in the NFL. And, it feels like they're on
[6:59] Speaker 1: the verge of you got to break this whole thing up.
[7:01] Speaker 1: Except for the fact that last year they were coming
[7:03] Speaker 1: off a chaos year like this year, and they won
[7:05] Speaker 1: a Super Bowl. And the year before the chaos win,
[7:07] Speaker 1: they went to a Super Bowl. I don't understand anything
[7:10] Speaker 1: about them. I don't understand how it is. Last year,
[7:12] Speaker 1: the world was furious with me. Not the whole world,
[7:14] Speaker 1: just Eagles world, where I made the point, an unassailable truth.
[7:18] Speaker 1: Every team that I've ever seen Jalen Hurts quarterback has
[7:21] Speaker 1: been ultimately limited to by his ability or lack thereof
[7:25] Speaker 1: to throw the ball, right? It happened at Alabama, right?
[7:28] Speaker 1: They benched him in the title game. And we saw
[7:31] Speaker 1: the passing game turn into something else, right? It happened
[7:34] Speaker 1: at Oklahoma. By the way, two places where he was
[7:35] Speaker 1: a Heisman Trophy finalist. This is the duality of the
[7:38] Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts experience. Correct. And we have seen it happen
[7:41] Speaker 1: with the Eagles, except for the multiple Super Bowls that
[7:46] Speaker 1: you just referred to. Which is a big, other than that,
[7:49] Speaker 1: how is the play series of moments?
[7:51] Speaker 2: People are like, well, so you don't credit him for
[7:54] Speaker 2: the Super Bowl?
[7:54] Speaker 1: I'm like, no, no, no. It's the opposite. Right?
[7:58] Speaker 2: I credit him so much for the super bowls that
[8:00] Speaker 2: it makes me question everything else I know about football
[8:02] Speaker 2: and quarterbacking because he is such an outlier in that way.
[8:07] Speaker 2: And yeah, I listen, I don't exactly know what Nick
[8:10] Speaker 2: Sirianni does. Like he's an, he's an offensive coach and
[8:14] Speaker 2: they've cycled through play callers sometimes because the hires have
[8:16] Speaker 2: been bad. And sometimes because they go get head coaching
[8:18] Speaker 2: jobs elsewhere. Like Shane Steichen seems to be a legitimately
[8:22] Speaker 2: good coach in Indianapolis and And then he hires Kevin Petullo,
[8:27] Speaker 2: and that seems to be going poorly. And it's like, well,
[8:30] Speaker 2: then take over. You've been a play caller before. You're
[8:34] Speaker 2: an offensive coach.
[8:36] Speaker 1: Fix it. So I don't know why Nick Sirianni, and.
[8:39] Speaker 2: He probably does in Philly to your point, but it
[8:42] Speaker 2: feels like he should get more heat nationally for it,
[8:44] Speaker 2: but the results are so overwhelming there. And I will say,
[8:49] Speaker 2: I don't think they're going to go 1-3, but if
[8:52] Speaker 2: they do, and if Dallas wins out, Dallas can still
[8:56] Speaker 2: jump them for the division. And in that scenario, then
[9:01] Speaker 2: it's everybody must go. Yeah, or somebody got to go, right?
[9:04] Speaker 1: At the very least, at that point, I do think
[9:07] Speaker 1: someone has to get fired. I do wonder this about Sirianni,
[9:10] Speaker 1: is that if he takes over the play calling and
[9:14] Speaker 1: nothing changes... yeah then he his everybody must go becomes
[9:20] Speaker 1: a lot stronger right what if um and i've seen
[9:25] Speaker 1: people i mentioned this on the last show and i've
[9:27] Speaker 1: seen other people talk about this where they say that
[9:29] Speaker 1: chris sims has never been a jalen hurts fan is
[9:32] Speaker 1: is a go hard at jalen hurts sort of dude
[9:35] Speaker 1: but um What if the reason that Sirianni does not
[9:39] Speaker 1: do this is he does in fact recognize that the
[9:41] Speaker 1: problem is not the play caller and the problem is
[9:43] Speaker 1: the manner in which their quarterback operates the offense?
[9:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, I think then I would agree with him.
[9:52] Speaker 2: I do think that he is a limiting thing like
[9:55] Speaker 2: we've talked about, and it was masked last year by
[9:58] Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley having one of the five greatest running back
[10:01] Speaker 2: seasons in the history of the league. And I saw
[10:04] Speaker 2: Bill Barnwell put something out that he's like, Saquon Barkley
[10:08] Speaker 2: is actually being unlucky this year, which we don't normally
[10:12] Speaker 2: consider with running backs, but basically that his like rushing
[10:15] Speaker 2: success rate on long runs is The plays that should
[10:19] Speaker 2: go for 15 yards last year were going for 50.
[10:22] Speaker 2: And this year, the plays that should go for 15
[10:25] Speaker 2: yards are going for like six. And that is just
[10:28] Speaker 2: that there is actually some variance that we don't normally
[10:31] Speaker 2: associate with that position that's happening there. Obviously, a ton
[10:35] Speaker 2: of usage last year. There have been offensive line injuries.
[10:38] Speaker 2: People clearly don't respect Hurts in the same way. But
[10:42] Speaker 2: the other thing is the most likely guy to go
[10:45] Speaker 2: in the offseason is probably not going to help the
[10:47] Speaker 2: passing game get better. Because it might end up just
[10:49] Speaker 2: being A.J. Brown.
[10:50] Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. I think they just going
[10:53] Speaker 1: to have to deal with that. Because what he doesn't
[10:56] Speaker 1: appear to be is a polarizing figure. I agree.
[11:00] Speaker 2: He seems to be speaking for a lot of people
[11:02] Speaker 2: in that locker room.
[11:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, like I don't get the... So the issue with
[11:06] Speaker 1: Terrell Owens always was the reason that he was divisive
[11:11] Speaker 1: is there were always some people on his side. Then
[11:15] Speaker 1: it was the other people that hated his guts. And
[11:17] Speaker 1: that's where you wound up with the issue. We're not
[11:20] Speaker 1: getting any word out about this, that A.J. Brown is
[11:24] Speaker 1: like tearing things up.
[11:25] Speaker 2: Right.
[11:26] Speaker 1: And it doesn't seem like he acts a fool about
[11:28] Speaker 1: this stuff or is difficult. Like anytime we see him
[11:31] Speaker 1: in media talking about it, he seems very measured. And
[11:34] Speaker 1: by the way, very correct. Not saying anything that anybody
[11:38] Speaker 1: with two eyes is not able to witness. It's and
[11:41] Speaker 1: his critiques are typically broader than I need the ball.
[11:44] Speaker 1: There is definitely we will be better if I got
[11:46] Speaker 1: the ball. But it's also a heavy dose of, you know,
[11:48] Speaker 1: we got a lot of stuff that we're actually not
[11:51] Speaker 1: out here doing correctly. Maybe we could get a little
[11:54] Speaker 1: better at this. You listen to the people who are
[11:56] Speaker 1: around the team. they'll seem to be ready to tell
[11:59] Speaker 1: you that the problem is the quarterback and the people
[12:02] Speaker 1: are tired of the way the quarterback does things. You
[12:05] Speaker 1: could trade a wide receiver because you're tired of him.
[12:08] Speaker 1: This isn't how the quarterback thing works. I don't know
[12:11] Speaker 1: where they go find another one of those.
[12:13] Speaker 2: No, I mean, it's got to be 99% that Jalen
[12:18] Speaker 2: Hurts is back next year.
[12:19] Speaker 1: Oh, it's got to be 100. It's got to be 100.
[12:22] Speaker 1: If not 100, you don't move off of that guy.
[12:25] Speaker 2: And so.
[12:27] Speaker 1: But what do you do?
[12:29] Speaker 2: What offense do you build around Jalen Hurts that isn't
[12:34] Speaker 2: some version of we have to be the best rushing
[12:36] Speaker 2: team in football? That's really the only path to it.
[12:40] Speaker 2: And they might outlaw the tush push this year, which
[12:42] Speaker 2: I don't think is going to hurt. I think Jalen
[12:44] Speaker 2: Hurts will be the best quarterback, sneak quarterback, even without
[12:48] Speaker 2: the tush push. The guy can squat 650 pounds and
[12:50] Speaker 2: got a good offensive line. So I don't think that'll
[12:52] Speaker 2: be that big of a deal.
[12:53] Speaker 1: And he's not tall. And he's not. Right. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
[12:58] Speaker 1: But it might be the situation where you peaked. It's reasonable.
[13:04] Speaker 2: You won a Super Bowl. You went to two. He
[13:06] Speaker 2: got a Super Bowl MVP. He's never going to be
[13:09] Speaker 2: a great thrower. You gave him a quarter of a
[13:11] Speaker 2: billion dollars, and you're going to have a couple of
[13:14] Speaker 2: years of frustration here.
[13:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, the peaked argument, you know, I worry about this
[13:20] Speaker 1: with America's team, the Detroit Lions. Like, I'm in it
[13:22] Speaker 1: with them at least for a little while. But that's like,
[13:25] Speaker 1: That's the fear and the concern. I'm going to be
[13:26] Speaker 1: a television producer right fast. I'm not saying that your
[13:29] Speaker 1: television show would do this, and I want to be
[13:31] Speaker 1: careful naming other television shows by name because I don't
[13:34] Speaker 1: want to put you in an uncomfortable position there, but
[13:36] Speaker 1: I would just simply say that somewhere, at some point,
[13:41] Speaker 1: this week maybe, and maybe another week, depending upon how
[13:44] Speaker 1: these two gentlemen play, somebody's going to put it up
[13:47] Speaker 1: on a screen. You're going to see it on a chyron.
[13:49] Speaker 1: That's what they call it, the thing at the bottom
[13:51] Speaker 1: of the screen.
[13:52] Speaker 2: The bottom line, yeah.
[13:53] Speaker 1: Who you got. Jalen or Shador? Oof. I can promise
[14:06] Speaker 1: you that will be another show.
[14:09] Speaker 2: And then I will keep my thoughts to this podcast
[14:12] Speaker 2: or our text messages.
[14:13] Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Like I'm saying, we're
[14:15] Speaker 1: just talking about a hypothetical situation right now, right? Nobody
[14:19] Speaker 1: has actually done it. By the time we get done recording, however,
[14:22] Speaker 1: it may.
[14:23] Speaker 2: Be on the screen already.
[14:24] Speaker 1: But I'm telling you right now, somebody is like, I
[14:28] Speaker 1: don't know, man. I think that might have some sizzle
[14:31] Speaker 1: to it. Yeah, well, it's got some sizzle. Can we
[14:34] Speaker 1: talk Shador for a minute? Sure. What do you... I mean,
[14:38] Speaker 1: by the way, we watched, we were in the same
[14:40] Speaker 1: room while that game was going and walking and I mean,
[14:43] Speaker 1: watching and talking as it went while also watching a
[14:45] Speaker 1: zillion games. But we, we, we were in the same
[14:48] Speaker 1: boat on that one.
[14:49] Speaker 2: Yes. And, and I, we did it on the show yesterday.
[14:52] Speaker 2: And so I went back and watched like the YouTube
[14:54] Speaker 2: cut up of every Shador throw. Cause we do have,
[14:57] Speaker 2: you know, we got three TVs and one's on the
[15:00] Speaker 2: quad box and one's on red zone.
[15:01] Speaker 1: It's like football overload. Right.
[15:03] Speaker 2: Um, Before I talk about what I think Shador actually is,
[15:09] Speaker 2: what is the stew? Because it's clearly a lot of ingredients.
[15:12] Speaker 2: If we just started, some of it is fame, and
[15:16] Speaker 2: some of it is just his father, and some of
[15:19] Speaker 2: it is confirmation bias. What is the stew that has
[15:22] Speaker 2: made the media go insane on this? Because I think
[15:25] Speaker 2: that this is... People compare it to Tebow, and I
[15:29] Speaker 2: don't think it's wildly unfair.
[15:31] Speaker 1: I feel like I am.
[15:32] Speaker 2: covering a story differently than 95 of our peers yeah
[15:37] Speaker 2: it's very odd to me like i want to talk
[15:41] Speaker 2: about this kid like he was a fifth round pick
[15:43] Speaker 2: that the media got wrong before the draft and see
[15:45] Speaker 2: if it works out but no one else seems to
[15:47] Speaker 2: be able to keep him within that prism.
[15:49] Speaker 1: Yeah so it's interesting you say that because i made
[15:51] Speaker 1: an argument um a couple of weeks ago that he
[15:55] Speaker 1: was not an underdog and i kind of started rethinking
[15:59] Speaker 1: that to a degree and he's not an underdog in
[16:02] Speaker 1: the sense that his father is Deion Sanders and has
[16:04] Speaker 1: been able to put his thumb on the scale in
[16:06] Speaker 1: some ways to get him some looks they may not
[16:08] Speaker 1: have gotten otherwise. But if you do view him in
[16:11] Speaker 1: the context of, like, he's a... Cam Ward is the ultimate, right?
[16:16] Speaker 1: Zero-star recruit to number one overall pick with the places
[16:19] Speaker 1: he went, right? But he's much more physically talented than
[16:22] Speaker 1: Shador is, right? That's where it becomes interesting in trying
[16:24] Speaker 1: to figure out exactly, like, who fits in as underdog.
[16:27] Speaker 1: But the truth is, as you point out, He was
[16:30] Speaker 1: a somewhat lightly recruited high school player who started at
[16:35] Speaker 1: a historically black college and then moved up to a
[16:38] Speaker 1: higher level where I was on record as saying he
[16:41] Speaker 1: looked like a good FCS quarterback, but not necessarily a
[16:45] Speaker 1: good FBS quarterback and became a second team All-American. To
[16:50] Speaker 1: get to where he has gotten is actually a pretty
[16:53] Speaker 1: big win, right? But that ain't enough for people now,
[16:57] Speaker 1: is it? Right? Like, and so... I think the things
[17:01] Speaker 1: you listed in the stew are certainly there, but I
[17:03] Speaker 1: think that this is as much as anything else, a
[17:05] Speaker 1: reflection of the ways that we communicate with each other
[17:09] Speaker 1: and the way that social media has poisoned our brains collectively, right?
[17:15] Speaker 1: And so everything becomes a debate point because that's what
[17:19] Speaker 1: gets engagement, right? Like everything becomes something that has to be,
[17:23] Speaker 1: rarely is it there to be discussed. It is very
[17:26] Speaker 1: often there. to be argued. So let me tell you
[17:29] Speaker 1: this one. I think I see a screen grab of this.
[17:31] Speaker 1: I didn't listen to it. So if this isn't exactly
[17:34] Speaker 1: what it is, that's fine. You let me know. But
[17:36] Speaker 1: I'm just going to read to you this synopsis of
[17:40] Speaker 1: something off of Nightcap with Shannon Sharp and Chad Johnson.
[17:42] Speaker 1: And it says, Shannon Sharp tells Chad Ochocinco that he
[17:47] Speaker 1: believes the Cleveland Browns are trying to set Shador Sanders
[17:51] Speaker 1: up by letting him start the remaining games of the
[17:54] Speaker 1: season with with their next games being the Bears, the Bills, Steelers,
[18:00] Speaker 1: and Bengals. Set him up to fail or to succeed?
[18:08] Speaker 1: But they also told me that it was a setup.
[18:11] Speaker 1: And I don't like saying they about just this random
[18:14] Speaker 1: swath of people, but when he wasn't playing. It was
[18:18] Speaker 1: a setup, right? But the reason I say that, I
[18:20] Speaker 1: think it's important to talk about that in the context
[18:22] Speaker 1: of the suit, because also this list of games that
[18:24] Speaker 1: you talk about, the Bengals, they got to make a
[18:28] Speaker 1: wish foundation on defense, and that's the end of the season.
[18:31] Speaker 1: The Steelers, I mean... I don't know, right? The Bills
[18:34] Speaker 1: don't have some great defense. And the Bears, you know
[18:38] Speaker 1: better than I do about what exactly. I mean, they're
[18:40] Speaker 1: a good team, but I don't know. They lead the
[18:43] Speaker 1: league in takeaways, but they've been in multiple shootouts. They're
[18:47] Speaker 1: not a great defense. But this is the kind of thing.
[18:50] Speaker 1: I hear people say things that are so far in
[18:53] Speaker 1: either direction when it comes down to him. I don't see,
[18:57] Speaker 1: and maybe these people are out here, but I don't
[18:59] Speaker 1: see that many people who are that hard on Shador
[19:01] Speaker 1: in public anymore. I see far more people who think
[19:04] Speaker 1: that anything that isn't going exactly his direction is some
[19:08] Speaker 1: kind of setup to hold him down. And I think
[19:11] Speaker 1: that is the broth of the stew is the internet.
[19:15] Speaker 2: And I think that that's the answer probably for a
[19:17] Speaker 2: lot of things nowadays, like that we just all have
[19:21] Speaker 2: some degree of toxic internet brain and it's, it's polluted everything.
[19:25] Speaker 2: And listen, I will like, my true thought is that
[19:28] Speaker 2: a fifth round pick on the Cleveland Browns should not
[19:31] Speaker 2: be a topic, but I don't fight it for when
[19:34] Speaker 2: it gets in the show, because I know it does numbers.
[19:36] Speaker 1: Right.
[19:36] Speaker 2: So like, I guess I'm contributing, even when I then
[19:38] Speaker 2: get on the air and try to do the most
[19:40] Speaker 2: reasonable Shador analysis ever.
[19:42] Speaker 1: Almost like intentionally.
[19:44] Speaker 2: Trying not to go viral to make some sort of
[19:47] Speaker 2: defiant point. I could be more defiant and not, allow
[19:50] Speaker 2: it in the show but it's just odd to me
[19:55] Speaker 2: that like he had a statistically very good game against
[19:59] Speaker 2: Tennessee with some absolutely impressive throws I thought the touchdown
[20:05] Speaker 2: didn't joke it was very good I thought the back
[20:07] Speaker 2: pile on throw to fan and was good and I
[20:10] Speaker 2: thought he felt the pressure on some and dumped the
[20:12] Speaker 2: ball off nicely. I thought his stats were a little
[20:15] Speaker 2: inflated with yak. Judkins had a huge run after the catch.
[20:19] Speaker 2: Judy's touchdown was a huge run after the catch. Uh,
[20:22] Speaker 2: so I don't think it, it didn't, it didn't look
[20:24] Speaker 2: to me like a 340 passing yard game, but that's
[20:27] Speaker 2: what the stats ultimately showed. Um, But I've never seen
[20:32] Speaker 2: people so happy to crown a guy a franchise quarterback
[20:35] Speaker 2: for losing to the Tennessee Titans.
[20:37] Speaker 1: The worst team in the league.
[20:38] Speaker 2: What's going on?
[20:39] Speaker 1: But it's because people want it, right? I think this
[20:43] Speaker 1: is maybe the part that I think is the most
[20:45] Speaker 1: interesting is how much about Sanders in the discussion has
[20:49] Speaker 1: been about whether or not he's getting a chance. And
[20:52] Speaker 1: I'm like, when did we start doing that?
[20:54] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[20:55] Speaker 1: Like that's just not, that's not the world that we're in.
[20:58] Speaker 1: That's not, no, that's not, it's, it's not that, but
[21:03] Speaker 1: I think it lands in the middle in the sense that,
[21:05] Speaker 1: for example, Stefanski says that should, I was going to
[21:08] Speaker 1: start for the rest of the season. There's no reason
[21:10] Speaker 1: why he should not. And what I've seen, he's been
[21:13] Speaker 1: better than anything that Dylan Gabriel had produced. I don't
[21:16] Speaker 1: watch closely enough to tell you exactly why he is.
[21:18] Speaker 1: I've watched more closely with your door than I did
[21:20] Speaker 1: with Dylan Gabriel, I guess is the point that I'm saying.
[21:22] Speaker 1: So I'm not in a great position. to be comparative.
[21:24] Speaker 1: But yeah, he should be playing for the rest of
[21:26] Speaker 1: the year and the Browns will be fools if they
[21:28] Speaker 1: don't take a quarterback as early as they possibly can
[21:32] Speaker 1: next year. Like, come on, man. Like this is, this is,
[21:35] Speaker 1: and that leads us then to an open world and
[21:39] Speaker 1: set up where the Eagles can trade a fourth or
[21:42] Speaker 1: fifth round pick and bring Shador Sanders in and give
[21:45] Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts somebody behind him to make sure that, you know,
[21:50] Speaker 1: he doing what he's supposed to do in the off
[21:51] Speaker 1: season and then go boy like you think they're having
[21:54] Speaker 1: a good time in philly now.
[21:57] Speaker 2: I don't think like that listen i think that's the
[21:59] Speaker 2: thing like i i we have seen nfl teams sour
[22:03] Speaker 2: on quarterbacks they don't want headlines for backups which is
[22:08] Speaker 2: reasonable it's a reasonable thing to not want yeah uh
[22:12] Speaker 2: your backup quarterback to be a distraction i i think
[22:16] Speaker 2: it I think it shortened Cam Newton's career, not to
[22:18] Speaker 2: have a whole Cam Newton conversation. It was a factor
[22:21] Speaker 2: with Tim Tebow. We have seen it before. So Shador
[22:25] Speaker 2: is going to have to be exceptional. And if he
[22:27] Speaker 2: goes into next year with a top five pick, a
[22:32] Speaker 2: $ 230 million quarterback, say whatever you want to say about
[22:36] Speaker 2: the Sean Watson, but the owner was at his wedding
[22:39] Speaker 2: last this year.
[22:41] Speaker 1: Like, you know what I mean?
[22:41] Speaker 2: Like, you're like, Oh wow. The owner wants to do her.
[22:44] Speaker 2: I think the owner wants the Sean.
[22:47] Speaker 1: Right. Although God knows how cooked he's going to, he's
[22:51] Speaker 1: coming off an Achilles, right?
[22:53] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[22:55] Speaker 1: But you're right. But no, no, you're absolutely right. That
[22:57] Speaker 1: best case scenario for Jimmy Haslam is the renaissance of
[23:02] Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson. Yes, of course that is what he is.
[23:05] Speaker 1: I had completely forgotten about this.
[23:07] Speaker 2: Dude, that is, dude, he is, it's the worst trade
[23:10] Speaker 2: in NFL history by far. And he guaranteed his contract
[23:14] Speaker 2: and all of his billionaire friends hated him for it.
[23:17] Speaker 2: Of course he wants to get the last laugh on that.
[23:21] Speaker 2: Like if next year you have a new coach, shadur
[23:25] Speaker 2: sanders a top five pick and deshaun wants.
[23:28] Speaker 1: It i mean it's gonna be on our show every
[23:32] Speaker 1: day it's gonna be every day when you put it
[23:37] Speaker 1: like that right like that this is one of those
[23:39] Speaker 1: when you put it like that scenario yeah.
[23:42] Speaker 2: Man like i so but but whose trade shadur would
[23:45] Speaker 2: have to be I can't even fathom what he would
[23:48] Speaker 2: have to do the rest of the way for them
[23:50] Speaker 2: to not use a top five pick on a quarterback.
[23:53] Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. It's impossible for me. There's nothing right.
[23:57] Speaker 1: I agree. Now that being said, what quarterback have you seen?
[24:02] Speaker 2: None.
[24:04] Speaker 1: Right. Like I watched Francisco Mendoza the other night. Yeah.
[24:09] Speaker 1: I mean, okay. That's what we doing. That's fine. That's
[24:12] Speaker 1: the guy that people say. I, I, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Listen,
[24:17] Speaker 1: if the answer is this happens to be the year,
[24:21] Speaker 1: the 2013 draft, like the Eric Fisher. The EJ manual.
[24:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, Dion Jordan, Wayne Johnson, like that draft. If this
[24:31] Speaker 2: happens to be that year, then okay. Don't draft a
[24:36] Speaker 2: guy you hate with a top five pick. That's not
[24:39] Speaker 2: a way to build a winning franchise. But assuming someone
[24:44] Speaker 2: is there that, your football Illuminati agrees in to let
[24:50] Speaker 2: a fifth round pick have six games to change your
[24:55] Speaker 2: mind and make you go away from that would be
[24:56] Speaker 2: completely insane.
[24:57] Speaker 1: Well you just have to really believe it right like
[24:59] Speaker 1: you have to really believe in the position that for
[25:02] Speaker 1: example Kyle Shanahan was in with Brock Purdy where it
[25:06] Speaker 1: reached a point where he was like no no no
[25:09] Speaker 1: we really believe this and for what it's worth Brock
[25:11] Speaker 1: Purdy starting NFL quarterback right I think that The point
[25:15] Speaker 1: that you make if you're on Team Shador about this
[25:18] Speaker 1: is if Brock Purdy, who had a fairly similar collegiate
[25:21] Speaker 1: profile to Shador Sanders, he was a very good college quarterback,
[25:24] Speaker 1: although he was all over the place, he was still good.
[25:27] Speaker 1: But if you think that he can become a starting quarterback,
[25:31] Speaker 1: because we're not even talking about franchise, like I think
[25:33] Speaker 1: we say franchise too much. Let's not even ask if
[25:36] Speaker 1: he can become a franchise quarterback. If he can become
[25:38] Speaker 1: a starting quarterback, an example of a starting quarterback would
[25:41] Speaker 1: be Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, other guys of that caliber.
[25:44] Speaker 1: If you think you've got a starting quarterback, you buy
[25:47] Speaker 1: in on that, right? Yes, yes, but okay, I just...
[25:53] Speaker 1: Those teams would say that those guys are franchise quarterbacks.
[25:56] Speaker 1: I know they would say it.
[25:57] Speaker 2: When you give them $ 250 million, aren't they franchise quarterbacks?
[26:01] Speaker 1: Right, I think, but the problem is that's what they
[26:03] Speaker 1: all get, right? So like, that's why I say we
[26:06] Speaker 1: use the term so broadly, but those guys are really,
[26:08] Speaker 1: Tua Tunga-Vailoa is a starting quarterback. Your guy Herbert, until
[26:13] Speaker 1: proven otherwise, is a very good starting quarterback, right? I
[26:19] Speaker 1: look at this with the Browns, and if they get
[26:21] Speaker 1: in the draft next year, if you don't see a
[26:24] Speaker 1: first round pick as a quarterback, do you wind up doing, say,
[26:29] Speaker 1: like the Steelers did with Kenny Pickett, where it's like, damn,
[26:31] Speaker 1: we got to do this eventually. all right, man, let's go.
[26:34] Speaker 1: All right.
[26:34] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[26:35] Speaker 1: Go ahead and get one of those.
[26:36] Speaker 2: Right.
[26:36] Speaker 1: Like, like you don't want to wind up in a
[26:37] Speaker 1: situation where you're like shopping at the airport. Like, damn,
[26:42] Speaker 1: I don't have a blank. I don't have headphones. I'm
[26:45] Speaker 1: about to get on this plane. Why do these headphones
[26:48] Speaker 1: cost $ 500? And they, they, they ain't even got the deep.
[26:51] Speaker 1: They ain't even got noise canceled.
[26:53] Speaker 2: Right. You know, it's, it's a tricky one. I, I
[27:00] Speaker 2: think the Kenny Pickett situation is not, That's just not
[27:03] Speaker 2: ever the answer. Right. It's never a good idea to reach.
[27:08] Speaker 2: Because a first-round pick is a tremendous asset if you
[27:12] Speaker 2: hit on them at any position.
[27:14] Speaker 1: Yes. You know what I mean?
[27:15] Speaker 2: If you draft a great right tackle with a first-round pick,
[27:20] Speaker 2: it's a huge cost-saving thing compared to what you would
[27:22] Speaker 2: have to pay a great right tackle in free agency.
[27:25] Speaker 2: So hitting on first-round picks is a supremely important way
[27:30] Speaker 2: in building a good football team. So I would not
[27:33] Speaker 2: advocate for the reach for the Kenny Pickett level prospect
[27:35] Speaker 2: situation ever, but man, you talk about sports radio, sports
[27:41] Speaker 2: radio in Cleveland in a George Sanders and Sean Watson
[27:46] Speaker 2: quarterback battle, man. I don't know.
[27:49] Speaker 1: Like I just, cause there's a lot of Browns fans
[27:51] Speaker 1: who seem to believe. I have not. gone into the
[27:56] Speaker 1: Cleveland radio. I, and I love doing that from time
[27:58] Speaker 1: to time. It's been a while since I've done. Oh,
[28:01] Speaker 1: it's so much fun. My favorite was the morning after
[28:04] Speaker 1: LeBron won the second championship. it uh like i was
[28:07] Speaker 1: calling shows and laughing like i was all over i
[28:10] Speaker 1: was all over rizzo i think it was a rizzo
[28:12] Speaker 1: going hammering those cats oh no no no no no
[28:15] Speaker 1: i'm always here to like oh what's going on up
[28:18] Speaker 1: there in cleveland right now.
[28:19] Speaker 2: Yeah ken carmen and anthony lima that's the show that
[28:22] Speaker 2: i rock with they do a nice show in the
[28:23] Speaker 2: mornings uh carmen could go insane sometimes lima tries to
[28:27] Speaker 2: reign them in but yeah it is a yeah it's
[28:29] Speaker 2: fun like it's fun to those are the markets like
[28:32] Speaker 2: Cold weather markets with passionate, beaten down sports fans.
[28:36] Speaker 1: Yes. You know what I mean? Detroit, Cleveland. But that's
[28:42] Speaker 1: why Philly is so interesting because they're only beaten down
[28:46] Speaker 1: because they fight so much. Right. It's actually been pretty
[28:49] Speaker 1: good for you guys. Yeah.
[28:51] Speaker 2: So I always say that Philly, New York, Boston is
[28:54] Speaker 2: like the big three where like their fans think they're
[28:57] Speaker 2: smarter than the GM and uh, like being mean is
[29:00] Speaker 2: in their DNA. And then Chicago is like the capital
[29:03] Speaker 2: of everybody else. Like we, we can be mean, but
[29:07] Speaker 2: we're still like, we like to think of ourselves as Midwestern. Nice. Yes.
[29:11] Speaker 2: But then like the places to do sports radio are
[29:14] Speaker 2: cold weather city. Cause he local sports radio in LA, Houston.
[29:21] Speaker 2: It's just, it's too nice out.
[29:23] Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I do contend. Um, Chicago, New York fans,
[29:28] Speaker 1: and we're going to break with this idea, are far
[29:30] Speaker 1: more beaten down than they get credit for being. The
[29:34] Speaker 1: Bears are a far more miserable sports franchise. They have
[29:38] Speaker 1: an incredible history. and nothing after the history except the
[29:41] Speaker 1: 85 Bears. I'm at Madison Square Garden where they have
[29:45] Speaker 1: an original six hockey team and I believe an original
[29:49] Speaker 1: NBA franchise. When leagues had six and eight teams and
[29:54] Speaker 1: have a combined five championships. Five championships. I've lived here.
[30:02] Speaker 1: This is the ninth football season I've been here. Between
[30:04] Speaker 1: two franchises, I've seen one good team this entire time. No, no, no, no, no.
[30:10] Speaker 1: They don't get nearly enough credit around here for how
[30:13] Speaker 1: much losing they want. Even the Yankees, who have now
[30:17] Speaker 1: not won a championship in 16 years, and that 16
[30:21] Speaker 1: years is the only one they've won in the last 25.
[30:22] Speaker 1: When I was a little kid, the Yankees, by the way,
[30:26] Speaker 1: were terrible. Like, 80s before the run starts terrible. They've
[30:31] Speaker 1: taken a lot of L's up here. I don't feel
[30:33] Speaker 1: a Philadelphia. I feel like reasonably competitive, except the Sixers
[30:37] Speaker 1: have done things to them, but you know, that's true.
[30:40] Speaker 2: And, and the, my least favorite person on the internet
[30:43] Speaker 2: is that Boston sports kid that holds up the sign
[30:46] Speaker 2: at every championship where he's like, I've been to nine
[30:48] Speaker 2: championships and I'm seven years old. And then he keeps
[30:51] Speaker 2: updating it.
[30:51] Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, they used, they used to get beat down.
[30:55] Speaker 1: And the one team, you know, the Celtics was doing
[30:56] Speaker 1: all the winning, but you know, That's sizzling. They got
[30:59] Speaker 1: a weird relationship. The Bruins guaranteed to sell out. The
[31:02] Speaker 1: Celtics better be good. That's kind of how Boston works.
[31:07] Speaker 1: Coming up next, if you don't know what I'm about
[31:09] Speaker 1: to tell you, you're never going to believe it. Those
[31:12] Speaker 1: of you who I haven't even said what it is
[31:14] Speaker 1: know exactly what I'm talking about. It's that crazy. Coming
[31:17] Speaker 1: up next. We're back with Danny Parkins. I'm just going
[31:24] Speaker 1: to have to come out and say it. Because the
[31:27] Speaker 1: Colts are down quarterbacks, Daniel Jones tore an Achilles. Anthony
[31:31] Speaker 1: Richardson got a broken face. Phillip Rivers is going to
[31:36] Speaker 1: come work out for the Colts. And if the workout
[31:40] Speaker 1: goes okay, it sounds like they're going to let Phillip
[31:42] Speaker 1: Rivers play for them. I need you to understand something
[31:45] Speaker 1: about Phillip Rivers. Phillip Rivers is 44 years old. And
[31:49] Speaker 1: not only is that really old to still be playing football,
[31:52] Speaker 1: I heard this morning, He has a biological child who
[31:58] Speaker 1: is older than Riley Leonard, the Colts backup. Because Riley
[32:01] Speaker 1: Leonard might not be able to play this week. Wait
[32:03] Speaker 1: a minute. So is Phillip, it just dawned on me
[32:06] Speaker 1: as I was saying that is the plan that Phillip
[32:08] Speaker 1: rivers might play on Sunday. That's impossible. I refuse to
[32:12] Speaker 1: believe that. Hold on. Hold on.
[32:14] Speaker 2: I saw it said, like, could be put on the
[32:16] Speaker 2: practice squad and could be an option is how I
[32:19] Speaker 2: saw the wording.
[32:20] Speaker 1: I don't think. Okay. Okay.
[32:21] Speaker 2: Okay.
[32:22] Speaker 1: Okay. Okay. Okay. Hold on.
[32:23] Speaker 2: Hold on. All right.
[32:23] Speaker 1: So, uh, backup Riley Leonard has a knee injury. Um,
[32:28] Speaker 1: And this is from Stephen Holder at ESPN. This is
[32:31] Speaker 1: the lead in the next paragraph. The Colts quarterback saga
[32:35] Speaker 1: has taken another twist, which started Daniel Jones out for
[32:38] Speaker 1: the season because of a torn right Achilles in back
[32:40] Speaker 1: of Riley Leonard dealing with a knee injury. The Colts could, shockingly,
[32:43] Speaker 1: turn to retired NFL great Phillip Rivers as an emergency solution.
[32:48] Speaker 1: I want to say retired NFL great is a stretch.
[32:53] Speaker 1: But yes, Phillip Rivers has not played since... They couldn't
[32:57] Speaker 1: even fill up the stadiums with people. People had masks on. 2020,
[33:01] Speaker 1: the last time he played.
[33:05] Speaker 2: Oh, he is a semi-finalist for induction in the Hall
[33:11] Speaker 2: of Fame. This year.
[33:13] Speaker 1: This year. This year. This is correct.
[33:16] Speaker 2: Hold on.
[33:17] Speaker 1: Hold on. Hold on. I'm sorry. I don't mean to
[33:20] Speaker 1: interrupt you. No, I didn't mean to interrupt you. I
[33:22] Speaker 1: just read a paragraph in this that blows my mind.
[33:25] Speaker 1: The Colts believe Rivers' familiarity could give them a realistic
[33:30] Speaker 1: chance to stay competitive. I mean, stop.
[33:37] Speaker 2: Stop.
[33:37] Speaker 1: Now, okay.
[33:40] Speaker 2: There's a lot of things to unpack here. You got
[33:44] Speaker 2: to feel terrible if you're Riley Leonard. Like, he thought
[33:49] Speaker 2: he was doing okay. He had risen up to be
[33:52] Speaker 2: a backup quarterback in the NFL. Yes.
[33:55] Speaker 1: He's young. And they're like, oh, God, we need to
[33:59] Speaker 1: call a grandpa.
[34:00] Speaker 2: Yes.
[34:01] Speaker 1: Like that. That has to be super humbling. Also for
[34:05] Speaker 1: Brett Rippon. So apparently Brett Rippon is on the practice squad.
[34:10] Speaker 1: And so it sounds like if Riley Leonard could not
[34:12] Speaker 1: play this week, then they will bring up Brett Rippon.
[34:16] Speaker 1: And then Philip Rivers would then get on the practice
[34:18] Speaker 1: squad to get. This is a movie. Okay. Yeah.
[34:24] Speaker 2: If, if a comedy, if it ends well, like, or,
[34:28] Speaker 2: or it's, or it's a tragedy. Cause he's going to
[34:31] Speaker 2: get broken. I mean, how he can't be in shape
[34:36] Speaker 2: to do.
[34:37] Speaker 1: This, right? This isn't Tom Brady, right? So let me
[34:41] Speaker 1: tell you this about Tom Brady. I don't know if
[34:42] Speaker 1: you've ever had anything like this happen, but I was
[34:44] Speaker 1: doing radio for ESPN and I was, this is the
[34:47] Speaker 1: TB 12 stuff was coming up, you know, and, I
[34:52] Speaker 1: still got questions, but whatever, right? Yeah, no kidding. The
[34:55] Speaker 1: most compelling thing I ever heard about the Tom Brady
[34:58] Speaker 1: TV 12 stuff, and remember Tom Brady's big thing, and
[35:00] Speaker 1: I do think that he was right about this, is
[35:02] Speaker 1: that pliability was what was most important. Like the guys
[35:04] Speaker 1: with the greatest longevity are like the Ricky Hendersons and
[35:07] Speaker 1: the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's. They were all flexibility yoga type guys, right?
[35:12] Speaker 1: Like that's LeBron James is another great example. Like super,
[35:16] Speaker 1: like flexibility is the game if you want to play
[35:19] Speaker 1: For a long time. OK, cool. So we're doing the show.
[35:22] Speaker 1: And Trevor Price, former Pro Bowl defensive lineman, played for
[35:26] Speaker 1: the Ravens, played for the Broncos, went to Clemson, right?
[35:30] Speaker 1: He calls up because he's just listening on his way home.
[35:32] Speaker 1: And he said, oh, no, no, no. It's much different
[35:35] Speaker 1: when you hit Ben Roethlisberger versus hitting Tom Brady. He
[35:40] Speaker 1: was like, when you hit Ben Roethlisberger, it's like hitting
[35:44] Speaker 1: something made of glass. And he was like, and glass breaks.
[35:48] Speaker 1: He said that when you hit Tom Brady, it felt
[35:50] Speaker 1: like he melted into you. This idea of this supernatural
[35:55] Speaker 1: flexibility or whatever is that once he knew the hit
[35:58] Speaker 1: was coming, that he could just steer into the skid, basically.
[36:03] Speaker 1: And Look, he did play- It's like why kids don't
[36:06] Speaker 1: get hurt when they fall. Exactly, right? And look, he
[36:09] Speaker 1: did play till he was 45. There's something to it. Yeah, no,
[36:12] Speaker 1: Brady was amazing.
[36:13] Speaker 2: Right.
[36:13] Speaker 1: Now, Phillip Rivers- I have no idea what kind of
[36:17] Speaker 1: dedication to physical fitness he does or does not have.
[36:20] Speaker 1: Because on one hand, nothing about him indicates that he
[36:23] Speaker 1: cares that much about physical fitness. But on the other hand,
[36:26] Speaker 1: that also means he might be a little bit pliable.
[36:28] Speaker 1: Because the one thing he's not in there doing is
[36:30] Speaker 1: just throwing up weight every day. Right? Like, I imagine
[36:33] Speaker 1: that Phillip Rivers, with no shirt on, looks like a pillow. Yeah.
[36:38] Speaker 1: But he might be a firm pillow. But a pillow nonetheless.
[36:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, and like.
[36:45] Speaker 2: You know, there's a, I've heard Gronk say, Gronk gets asked, like,
[36:49] Speaker 2: you know, could Tom Brady quarterback still? And he always gives, like,
[36:54] Speaker 2: a pretty reasonable answer. He's like, yeah, if he couldn't
[36:56] Speaker 2: get hit. You know, like, I absolutely believe that it's
[37:02] Speaker 2: on the realm of possibilities that, like, Phillip Rivers' brain
[37:07] Speaker 2: and arm is still NFL caliber-ish, right? Like, Joe Flacco
[37:16] Speaker 2: has had moments of looking good this year. Now, he's 41,
[37:20] Speaker 2: and Rivers is 44, and Flacco has been playing continuously.
[37:23] Speaker 2: And in theory, Phillip Rivers has been playing with magnet
[37:27] Speaker 2: tiles and building blocks and playing with all those children
[37:30] Speaker 2: that he has. So I understand that that's different. But
[37:32] Speaker 2: I think it's totally within the realm of possibility that
[37:35] Speaker 2: Phillip Rivers' ability to process a defense and his ability
[37:39] Speaker 2: to hit a 15-yard out is better than Riley Leonard's.
[37:43] Speaker 2: That seems reasonable to me. But the problem is it's
[37:45] Speaker 2: tackle football. Yes.
[37:48] Speaker 1: You have to move. You just indirectly made a great point.
[37:53] Speaker 1: The reason that Rob Gronkowski doesn't still play football anymore
[37:57] Speaker 1: is because he doesn't want to get hit.
[37:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
[38:00] Speaker 1: And by the way, when he gets hit, he's also
[38:03] Speaker 1: hitting back at the same time. The thing that's underrated
[38:07] Speaker 1: about being quarterback is Rob, so many of those hits are,
[38:10] Speaker 1: there ain't nothing you can do about it. Like it's
[38:12] Speaker 1: the only job where you have to act like people
[38:16] Speaker 1: aren't trying to hit you. I guess why a receiver
[38:18] Speaker 1: to a certain degree also, but like you just have
[38:20] Speaker 1: to stand there and be like, you know, somebody might
[38:22] Speaker 1: hit me in the kidneys while I'm not looking.
[38:24] Speaker 2: Yeah. But I mean, at least a lot of the
[38:25] Speaker 2: time you are also running. Like, so you're in, could
[38:29] Speaker 2: deliver some blow. Yeah. You have to, Brady is an
[38:33] Speaker 2: outlier until proven otherwise. And I believe that, like, we've
[38:36] Speaker 2: gotten much better at sports science and sports medicine and
[38:39] Speaker 2: nutrition and flexibility to, like, you know, the old thing, like,
[38:42] Speaker 2: you couldn't be a running back after 27.
[38:45] Speaker 1: Or, like, those things have changed.
[38:47] Speaker 2: Clearly.
[38:49] Speaker 1: But I tend to believe you also have to, like,
[38:52] Speaker 1: continuously be an athlete. Like, I don't think you can
[38:56] Speaker 1: be Hall of Fame eligible.
[38:57] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[38:58] Speaker 1: And then come in and start an NFL game mid-season. Hey, look,
[39:01] Speaker 1: I could be wrong because I don't know this man.
[39:03] Speaker 1: But do you think that Phillip Rivers is still out here?
[39:06] Speaker 1: Is he Colin Kaepernick still working out every day, waiting
[39:09] Speaker 1: on a call that's never going to come, except it did? Yeah,
[39:12] Speaker 1: I don't know. I would be surprised. I know this.
[39:15] Speaker 2: I have a three-year-old and a five-year-old. And at the
[39:19] Speaker 2: end of my day... I'm tired. Now add seven more kids.
[39:27] Speaker 1: I just have to assume that it's not going to go. well.
[39:30] Speaker 2: And also, Indianapolis, you are the eighth seed in the
[39:35] Speaker 2: AFC right now. You have lost four of five and
[39:38] Speaker 2: three straight.
[39:39] Speaker 1: They could lose out. Well, that's what I was going
[39:42] Speaker 1: to say.
[39:42] Speaker 2: Here are your last four. At Seattle, top three defense
[39:47] Speaker 2: in football. Home against San Francisco on Monday night. Okay,
[39:52] Speaker 2: not an injured defense, but Robert Sala, he has them
[39:56] Speaker 2: overachieving like crazy. Jacksonville, pretty good defense this year. Houston
[40:03] Speaker 2: on the road, best defense in football with a bullet.
[40:07] Speaker 2: So you're playing two of the three best defenses on
[40:11] Speaker 2: the road, a top three defensive coach in Robert Sala. Like, stop.
[40:18] Speaker 1: It's not worth it. These are the kinds of decisions
[40:21] Speaker 1: that you make when you don't have your first round pick. Oh, right. Right.
[40:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, man. I, I said it at the time. It
[40:30] Speaker 2: has worked trading multiple first round picks for non quarterbacks,
[40:35] Speaker 2: but I would never do it. Like, I mean, maybe
[40:38] Speaker 2: for an edge rusher. I, I may, maybe, but like,
[40:43] Speaker 2: and like the sauce Gardner thing, at least you didn't
[40:45] Speaker 2: have to immediately pay him top of market. But what
[40:48] Speaker 2: often happens in these situations, like with the two edge
[40:50] Speaker 2: rushers that it happened with, Khalil Mack and Micah Parsons,
[40:54] Speaker 2: you have to give up all the draft capital and
[40:56] Speaker 2: then pay them the biggest contract ever.
[40:59] Speaker 1: The Bears thought they had their QB in Trubisky. They didn't.
[41:02] Speaker 1: They had one good year.
[41:04] Speaker 2: The Packers obviously have Jordan Love and think they can
[41:06] Speaker 2: win the Super Bowl, so maybe it'll work. The Rams
[41:08] Speaker 2: won a Super Bowl with Jalen Ramsey, but then he
[41:10] Speaker 2: was gone like a year and.
[41:11] Speaker 1: A half later.
[41:12] Speaker 2: I just, you made this bet on Sauce Gardner because
[41:15] Speaker 2: you were you would have made a bigger bet on
[41:17] Speaker 2: Daniel Jones. And now you've got no first round picks
[41:21] Speaker 2: and your other option is Anthony Richardson. Like you're just screwed.
[41:24] Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, right fast before we get to the, what
[41:28] Speaker 1: we go close with, I just saw something as we
[41:30] Speaker 1: were talking that, and who knows if this is actually true,
[41:33] Speaker 1: but it'll just birth, bring it up. And it says,
[41:36] Speaker 1: Ever since CP3 got sent home, he's been doing what
[41:39] Speaker 1: he's been wanting to do more of, spend time with
[41:42] Speaker 1: his son. Adam, my question for you, is that a
[41:44] Speaker 1: win for this son or not? Because I'm seeing it
[41:47] Speaker 1: with a video of little Chris on the timeline and
[41:51] Speaker 1: Chris Paul standing behind him with his hands on his hips.
[41:55] Speaker 1: What's there to watch? He's running on a fucking treadmill. Like,
[41:58] Speaker 1: what is there for you to observe here? Oh, my God. Like,
[42:00] Speaker 1: if Chris Paul is like this with adults... What do
[42:04] Speaker 1: you think he's like with his teenager? Dad, I just
[42:08] Speaker 1: want to have fun with my friends. Yeah, listen, sports parents, man.
[42:13] Speaker 1: Hold on, with the gym built into the house. I
[42:16] Speaker 1: have to see this. Where can I find it? I
[42:18] Speaker 1: will send you the link now. But I just had
[42:20] Speaker 1: never thought about what it was like when the Paul
[42:24] Speaker 1: family found out dad's coming back. they were just like
[42:30] Speaker 1: oh no like he's not even leaving to go forget
[42:32] Speaker 1: about road trips he's not even leaving to go to work.
[42:37] Speaker 2: Yeah man well chris paul he's a real case for
[42:41] Speaker 2: two things can be true all-time great point guard yes
[42:45] Speaker 2: all-time pain in the.
[42:46] Speaker 1: Ass yes yes and those two things are not unrelated right.
[42:49] Speaker 2: Yeah absolutely michael jordan leadership has a cost like yeah
[42:54] Speaker 2: yeah yeah there's definitely a connection here looking at your
[42:58] Speaker 2: text now oh man.
[43:00] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah just i mean just i just can't imagine
[43:03] Speaker 1: what it's like with chris paul standing there with his
[43:05] Speaker 1: arms folded.
[43:06] Speaker 2: No that's gotta just be that's gotta be miserable.
[43:09] Speaker 1: It's tough tough break man tough for.
[43:11] Speaker 2: All parties involved um You said what you were going
[43:15] Speaker 2: to close with, what we talked about at the end. Yeah, man.
[43:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, man. These Syracuse guys come with their own material,
[43:20] Speaker 1: and I appreciate it. Yeah, Lefkoe brings material.
[43:24] Speaker 2: And I was thinking about this is the type of
[43:26] Speaker 2: thing that I would maybe try to make some content
[43:30] Speaker 2: with if I still had a four-hour-a-day radio show.
[43:33] Speaker 1: On a Wednesday.
[43:34] Speaker 2: And now this is a one hour podcast on a Tuesday,
[43:37] Speaker 2: but I live in Pleasantville.
[43:38] Speaker 1: Okay. I don't know.
[43:39] Speaker 2: I don't know if you watch, uh, my friends and neighbors,
[43:43] Speaker 2: or if you're familiar with the concept, it's the Jon Hamm,
[43:45] Speaker 2: Apple TV show, Jon Hamm, New York finance guy clearly has,
[43:50] Speaker 2: you know, eight figures worth of money, uh, but decides
[43:53] Speaker 2: he would rather just like steal from his neighbors who
[43:55] Speaker 2: have like expensive shit laying around their house that they
[43:58] Speaker 2: haven't thought of because no crime happens in these places.
[44:01] Speaker 2: And so that's what the television show. So I live
[44:04] Speaker 2: in one of these places. I will not give away
[44:05] Speaker 2: the specific suburb or the specific roads for identifying factors.
[44:08] Speaker 1: Not really for me, but for these other people. But
[44:10] Speaker 1: there's not any crime here. And so there's a free
[44:13] Speaker 1: newspaper that.
[44:14] Speaker 2: Goes out once a month that details the things that
[44:20] Speaker 2: the police department has had called in. Things that the
[44:24] Speaker 2: cops have had to respond to. So I pulled some
[44:26] Speaker 2: of these. And I think that they are there. Would
[44:30] Speaker 2: you have called the cops, basically? Here we go. An
[44:33] Speaker 2: Ogden Road resident reported that she received two irate phone
[44:37] Speaker 2: calls from her neighbor after she put a lock on
[44:40] Speaker 2: a fence door between the two properties to keep her
[44:43] Speaker 2: neighbor from walking.
[44:44] Speaker 1: Into her yard.
[44:45] Speaker 2: After police talked with both neighbors, the lock was removed
[44:49] Speaker 2: and both agreed to stay out of each other's yards.
[44:52] Speaker 1: This made it into the newspaper.
[44:54] Speaker 2: Made it into the newspaper. Imagine calling the police over
[44:59] Speaker 2: this issue. Here's another one.
[45:00] Speaker 1: Here's another one.
[45:01] Speaker 2: This might be my favorite, but we're going to lead hot.
[45:06] Speaker 2: After responding to a report of a blonde man in
[45:09] Speaker 2: a striped shirt lying on the ground off Heathcote Road,
[45:13] Speaker 2: police found a scarecrow on a front lawn.
[45:20] Speaker 1: Oh. These are human.
[45:22] Speaker 2: Beings that I'm sending my kid to school with that
[45:25] Speaker 2: I'm expected to hang out with at children's events. They
[45:29] Speaker 2: are so pampered and privileged and sheltered that they called
[45:34] Speaker 2: the cops in October in suburbia because a scarecrow was
[45:39] Speaker 2: on the ground.
[45:40] Speaker 1: Counterpoint. If they're going to pay for them cops, they're
[45:42] Speaker 1: going to make them do some work. Okay. Okay. That
[45:47] Speaker 1: is a reasonable counterpoint. And those kind of people are
[45:50] Speaker 1: those types.
[45:51] Speaker 2: I got an alert from my kid's school, okay? My
[45:55] Speaker 2: wife sent it to me. I didn't believe it was real.
[45:58] Speaker 2: She confirmed it was real. They did not allow the
[46:02] Speaker 2: kids to go out for recess one day. And they
[46:06] Speaker 2: called it a soft shutdown because there was a sighting
[46:12] Speaker 2: of a raccoon. And so they called the cops. called
[46:17] Speaker 2: the police, and asked for extra patrols around the school
[46:21] Speaker 2: to come look into the raccoon situation. I went to
[46:25] Speaker 2: the Halloween thing at the kids' school, and I've been
[46:29] Speaker 2: dying to talk to someone about this. I talked to
[46:35] Speaker 2: my wife knows this other mom, trying to make conversation
[46:39] Speaker 2: with this random dad. I'm like, Hey, man, I had
[46:42] Speaker 2: my first, you know, welcome to blank town moment with
[46:45] Speaker 2: this soft shutdown over the raccoon policy. And he looks
[46:49] Speaker 2: me dead in the eye without a hint of sarcasm, irony,
[46:54] Speaker 2: or even the appearance that he had ever heard a joke.
[46:58] Speaker 2: And he says, that's a good policy. Do you want
[47:03] Speaker 2: your kid to get rabies? What the fuck are you
[47:10] Speaker 2: talking about? These are people who walk among us. I
[47:19] Speaker 2: have hundreds of them. An Oxford Road resident told police
[47:23] Speaker 2: that a man wearing a mask and blue coat walked
[47:25] Speaker 2: down his driveway, stopped, turned around, and then walked back
[47:30] Speaker 2: up his driveway.
[47:32] Speaker 1: You called the cops.
[47:35] Speaker 2: An East Parkway resident reported that she found several packets
[47:39] Speaker 2: of sugar on the hood of her car at noon.
[47:42] Speaker 2: She removed the sugar packets, but when she returned to
[47:45] Speaker 2: her car at 4 p.m., she found more packets of
[47:48] Speaker 2: sugar had been thrown onto the hood of her car.
[47:52] Speaker 1: What am I supposed to do with these people? Hey, man,
[47:55] Speaker 1: this also extends to one of my hotter takes. that
[47:59] Speaker 1: I used to bring up when it was a bit
[48:01] Speaker 1: more controversial, which is, yes, there are many police officers
[48:09] Speaker 1: who have very stressful, very dangerous jobs. And then there's
[48:15] Speaker 1: the other, like, 90% of them. Right? Like, not every
[48:21] Speaker 1: police officer is out here working in the jungle.
[48:25] Speaker 2: Right?
[48:25] Speaker 1: Right. Is out here working the South Bronx. No, no, no, no, no. Like,
[48:30] Speaker 1: when I lived in Miami, I was in Sunny Isles Beach.
[48:32] Speaker 1: I used to look at the cops around there. I'm like, hey, man,
[48:35] Speaker 1: ain't nothing hard about your job. I'm sorry. I know
[48:37] Speaker 1: there's a lot of things that are annoying. And, in fact,
[48:39] Speaker 1: you might even wish that there were some things about
[48:41] Speaker 1: your job that were a little bit more difficult. Because
[48:43] Speaker 1: in your dreams, you out here, da-da, da-da, da-da, da-da, right?
[48:49] Speaker 1: Like you think you want to do all that stuff, right?
[48:51] Speaker 1: But in the end, you out here coming to rustle
[48:54] Speaker 1: up them raccoons. That's like when the stuff start happening,
[48:57] Speaker 1: I forget, one of those tragedies, Or whatever. And people
[49:01] Speaker 1: are like, yo, the local authorities, why did those local cops,
[49:04] Speaker 1: why didn't they go in there? Because cops who are
[49:06] Speaker 1: capable of doing that don't work here. Right. They out
[49:10] Speaker 1: here doing somewhere, they out here for real fighting crime.
[49:13] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? The rest of these cops
[49:15] Speaker 1: out here doing exactly what you're talking about. I, I, I, yes.
[49:20] Speaker 2: Is an excellent point. That used to be a hotter take.
[49:24] Speaker 2: I would rather them not get the call. I would
[49:28] Speaker 2: rather the tax dollars go to them.
[49:30] Speaker 1: Just sitting in the precinct hanging out.
[49:34] Speaker 2: Because it's just embarrassing. It's embarrassing that you cannot solve
[49:41] Speaker 2: these problems. A blank Parks and Rec employee reported that
[49:46] Speaker 2: a pink penis was spray-painted on the tennis courts of
[49:49] Speaker 2: the middle school sometime over the weekend. The caller requested
[49:53] Speaker 2: extra police patrols after school.
[49:55] Speaker 1: And on weekends. Wait, what's... What is going on?
[50:01] Speaker 2: We've lost the plot as a society.
[50:04] Speaker 1: Hey, man, you know what happened? Those people said to the... No,
[50:08] Speaker 1: I don't have anything. I'm trying to come up with
[50:10] Speaker 1: anything at all, and I have nothing. And so I apologize.
[50:12] Speaker 1: Maybe these were not the best improv prompts. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
[50:16] Speaker 1: They were very good. Like, I was just thinking, though,
[50:18] Speaker 1: as I said, that I was going to make, like,
[50:20] Speaker 1: some larger societal observation. But I don't think I have one. Like,
[50:25] Speaker 1: this is.
[50:27] Speaker 1: Here's my question. Are they hitting... How many police officers
[50:30] Speaker 1: do they have? Because I feel like somebody getting paid
[50:32] Speaker 1: time and a half for this actually might be the
[50:35] Speaker 1: most offensive part to you was that y'all are paying
[50:37] Speaker 1: time and a half for somebody to sit out there
[50:39] Speaker 1: by the tennis court just in case somebody throws some
[50:41] Speaker 1: meat out there. Dude, it's it.
[50:45] Speaker 2: Listen, the property taxes are the most offensive part about it.
[50:49] Speaker 2: And I'm sure I'm going to find my suburban crew eventually. Like,
[50:54] Speaker 2: it was like, you know, your kids will become friends
[50:57] Speaker 2: and then you'll become friends with their friends' parents.
[51:00] Speaker 1: I don't know. Let me tell you something. I can
[51:03] Speaker 1: tell from this that you and my brother are really
[51:05] Speaker 1: going to start playing a lot of golf together because
[51:06] Speaker 1: you're going to need it.

[51:15] Speaker 2: And again, the people up here, I try to talk
[51:17] Speaker 2: to the dads with the golf polos at the school events,
[51:20] Speaker 2: and they all belong to country clubs with crazy initiation fees.
[51:23] Speaker 1: And they're like, oh, what do you do? I'm like,
[51:25] Speaker 1: I do what I do.
[51:25] Speaker 2: And they're like, what do you do? Venture capital, hedge fund,
[51:30] Speaker 2: investment banking. I don't want to talk to any of you.
[51:32] Speaker 1: No, no, I know you well enough to know that
[51:34] Speaker 1: you don't want to play golf with them because you
[51:36] Speaker 1: told me they were wearing golf polos. Like the fact
[51:41] Speaker 1: that they were wearing the garb and they weren't playing golf,
[51:43] Speaker 1: that's how I knew right there. You ain't want to. Yeah,
[51:46] Speaker 1: that's right. That's exactly right. Danny Parkins, check him out.
