[0:09] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:13] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:15] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:19] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:21] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:24] Speaker 1: a hater. It is Thursdays with Deontay. Deontay Lee of
[0:28] Speaker 1: the Ringer. What's going on?
[0:30] Speaker 2: Good to be here, man. I'm glad to be able
[0:32] Speaker 2: to get in with you. I know we were trying
[0:33] Speaker 2: to get this lined up a couple of weeks ago
[0:35] Speaker 2: and got out the bed and just not feeling right.
[0:38] Speaker 2: Damn it, man. Glad to have.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Gone from doubtful to probable again. Y'all got up one
[0:42] Speaker 1: day and his neck was hurting.
[0:43] Speaker 2: Like my buddy Charles said, nobody used to have a
[0:46] Speaker 2: bad back. I got a lot of football injuries that
[0:48] Speaker 2: every once in a while want to remind me that
[0:50] Speaker 2: they happen and that I haven't dealt with them and
[0:52] Speaker 2: they're not going away until I do.
[0:54] Speaker 1: He hit us at an hour that was so early
[0:56] Speaker 1: that you know his neck was fucked up because he
[0:58] Speaker 1: shouldn't have been awake. Like that was not I'm awake
[1:01] Speaker 1: to let you guys know. That is while I'm awake.
[1:04] Speaker 2: Exactly. I'm not supposed to be awake and this has
[1:07] Speaker 2: forced me out of my bed. And I know when
[1:09] Speaker 2: I close my eyes again, I ain't getting back up.
[1:11] Speaker 2: So let me just let my guys know. that they
[1:13] Speaker 2: ain't going to see me today.
[1:14] Speaker 1: Well, look, we got a lot of NFL topics we
[1:16] Speaker 1: want to get to. We'll get to A.J. Brown a
[1:17] Speaker 1: little later. We'll get to Mike Vrabel a little later.
[1:20] Speaker 1: But first, the NFL draft Thursday night. I saw that
[1:24] Speaker 1: you did your evaluation of Fernando Mendoza, and I thought
[1:29] Speaker 1: the way you went about it was very interesting because
[1:31] Speaker 1: I say on my end that he's the number one
[1:35] Speaker 1: pick in this draft.
[1:37] Speaker 2: Right.
[1:37] Speaker 1: He's not the number one pick in every draft, but
[1:41] Speaker 1: I'm not sure how that answers to what kind of
[1:43] Speaker 1: NFL quarterback that means that he would be. What did
[1:47] Speaker 1: you come back with?
[1:48] Speaker 2: Honestly, I had just been hung up over and over
[1:51] Speaker 2: again with, okay, so what does this trait mean in
[1:54] Speaker 2: an NFL context, right? It's very rare you get a
[1:57] Speaker 2: number one overall pick and you're haggling over, is this
[2:00] Speaker 2: enough arm strength? Is this enough mobility? Is this enough
[2:04] Speaker 2: processing of understanding coverages and knowing where to go with
[2:07] Speaker 2: the ball. Is this enough pocket management, right? Like with
[2:10] Speaker 2: Joe Burrow, I had some questions and then I went
[2:12] Speaker 2: back and watched and it was like, oh no, this
[2:14] Speaker 2: motherfucker is a wizard in the pocket. This is going
[2:16] Speaker 2: to work, right? Like he might not be Peyton Manning,
[2:19] Speaker 2: but he's doing a very kind of poor man's Peyton
[2:21] Speaker 2: Manning kind of impression in the pocket as far as
[2:24] Speaker 2: knowing what to do, how to avoid pressure and get
[2:25] Speaker 2: the ball out of his hands. I mean, we've seen
[2:27] Speaker 2: it work out in the league. I would say even
[2:29] Speaker 2: last year with Cam Ward, there are just some throws
[2:31] Speaker 2: that he would make or some decisions that he would make.
[2:33] Speaker 2: She would say, I'm not sure if you should make
[2:35] Speaker 2: that decision, but those are decisions that number one overall
[2:38] Speaker 2: picks make. Those are throws that number one overall picks make.
[2:41] Speaker 2: And I think that you saw enough athleticism and pure
[2:43] Speaker 2: arm strength to be able to kind of wrap your
[2:45] Speaker 2: head around that. I'm not saying that Fernando Mendoza doesn't
[2:48] Speaker 2: have a strong enough arm or doesn't have enough mobility,
[2:51] Speaker 2: but it's just so often I'm watching this film and
[2:53] Speaker 2: I'm like, I've heard Matt Ryan's name brought up and
[2:56] Speaker 2: I keep waiting for the Matt Ryan plays. I remember
[2:59] Speaker 2: Matt Ryan coming out of Boston College and it was
[3:01] Speaker 2: very clear that that was him and that Then Luke Keighley,
[3:05] Speaker 2: I lost to college after, but it was him and
[3:06] Speaker 2: a whole lot of just dudes. And he was finding
[3:08] Speaker 2: ways to win games. I don't know if I see
[3:11] Speaker 2: Fernando Mendoza as the same kind of engine of an
[3:13] Speaker 2: offense at the NFL level that people might see as
[3:17] Speaker 2: far as some of my buddies on the media space.
[3:19] Speaker 1: Well, I think it's an interesting question with him because
[3:22] Speaker 1: he's going to a very interesting quarterback division, right? Where,
[3:27] Speaker 1: I mean, we don't know what it'll mean that Patrick
[3:31] Speaker 1: Mahomes had a torn ACL, right? Like, I still think
[3:33] Speaker 1: that he'll be upper echelon quarterback in the NFL, but also,
[3:37] Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes is now going into his 10th season in
[3:40] Speaker 1: the NFL. Like, it's possible that we've seen the best
[3:44] Speaker 1: of him, which obviously doesn't mean he can't be very good, but...
[3:48] Speaker 1: The future for the Chiefs, hey, they have a quarterback
[3:50] Speaker 1: that's getting to the 30s and coming off a major injury.
[3:55] Speaker 1: I'm still not falling for that Bo Nix shit. I
[3:57] Speaker 1: know some people have and good for them. I'm still
[4:00] Speaker 1: not quite there. Justin Herbert, all the talent in the world,
[4:03] Speaker 1: but it still feels like maybe we're falling for that one. Yep.
[4:07] Speaker 1: But all the same, those are three talented quarterbacks in
[4:10] Speaker 1: the division. They needed a quarterback. The question is, what
[4:15] Speaker 1: level of quarterback do you need if you're going to
[4:17] Speaker 1: be the Raiders? If you're the Seahawks and you can
[4:19] Speaker 1: get pressure with four in the Super Bowl and don't
[4:22] Speaker 1: have to blitz people, then you can win it with
[4:24] Speaker 1: a Sam Darnold level of quarterback. The Raiders could be wrong, man.
[4:29] Speaker 1: I just don't feel like they're going to beat a
[4:30] Speaker 1: team to build a team around you where all your
[4:32] Speaker 1: quarterback has to do is be okay.
[4:34] Speaker 2: Well, and I think that's the terrible spot that the
[4:37] Speaker 2: Raiders find themselves in is that best case scenario, Clint
[4:40] Speaker 2: Kubiak continues to be a good play caller and Fernando
[4:43] Speaker 2: Mendoza turns out to be a good pro and you
[4:45] Speaker 2: still have the fourth best head coach and fourth best
[4:48] Speaker 2: quarterback in your division. That is entirely possible. And that's
[4:52] Speaker 2: not me saying that I'm a big Bo Nix fan,
[4:54] Speaker 2: but just what he can do. You can 100% see
[4:56] Speaker 2: a kid like him. I can't even say kid because
[4:58] Speaker 2: he left college so damn old, but you can see
[5:00] Speaker 2: a player like him being able to last in this
[5:02] Speaker 2: league a lot longer because of his mobility and some
[5:05] Speaker 2: of his raw arm talent than maybe a Mendoza will.
[5:08] Speaker 2: And that's not to say that I think that Mendoza
[5:09] Speaker 2: is going to fail, but I think that you can't
[5:12] Speaker 2: say with the same kind of certainty that you typically
[5:14] Speaker 2: would in a draft that your number one overall pick
[5:17] Speaker 2: is going to be here eight years from now, still
[5:19] Speaker 2: be a plus starter and be contributing to winning.
[5:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is. Let's say it doesn't work out for him.
[5:26] Speaker 1: We'll never know exactly why he go into the Raiders. Right.
[5:29] Speaker 3: Exactly. Exactly.
[5:31] Speaker 2: But you're still being owned by Mark Davis. You got
[5:34] Speaker 2: a first year head coach here. Your best football player
[5:37] Speaker 2: was out the door and got sent back home. Right.
[5:39] Speaker 2: Because some parts weren't right in the show. You know,
[5:42] Speaker 2: they didn't ship exactly what they said they were shipping.
[5:44] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[5:45] Speaker 2: The Raven said, you know, like there's there's it's entirely
[5:48] Speaker 2: possible that this goes as well as it possibly can.
[5:52] Speaker 2: And you are still looking at a five and 12
[5:53] Speaker 2: team that's got to fire his coach and be right
[5:56] Speaker 2: back to picking in the top five of the draft
[5:57] Speaker 2: in a couple of years.
[5:59] Speaker 1: Hey, man, who's your guy in this draft? Not quarterback necessarily.
[6:02] Speaker 1: Just guy.
[6:03] Speaker 2: Can you have a guy in this draft?
[6:05] Speaker 1: I think that's what I'm hung up on. The love, dude.
[6:09] Speaker 2: I think Jeremiah Love will probably be my guy right
[6:12] Speaker 2: to the extent that I could have one in this draft.
[6:14] Speaker 2: And to me, I don't know if he's so good.
[6:16] Speaker 2: You can't claim him as your guy. The real thing is. OK.
[6:19] Speaker 1: OK. So you you want to feel special.
[6:22] Speaker 2: Exactly. You know, it needs to be me on an island. Right.
[6:25] Speaker 2: Like I think that for some of me and my
[6:27] Speaker 2: draft buddies, the flag that I'm planting right now is
[6:30] Speaker 2: probably on Caden McDonald. If you wanted like a deep
[6:32] Speaker 2: cut type of player. Because if you go look at
[6:34] Speaker 2: his college production, you're talking about 31 solo tackles as
[6:37] Speaker 2: a 330 pound nose tackle. And I'm writing, I'm working
[6:40] Speaker 2: on something now in terms of storylines going into the draft.
[6:43] Speaker 2: And one of the things that I was thinking about
[6:45] Speaker 2: is that if his production was pasted over on Jordan
[6:49] Speaker 2: Davis coming out of Georgia, Jordan Davis would have been
[6:51] Speaker 2: the third overall pick. I think that this is truly
[6:54] Speaker 2: just a brand name issue and the fact that he
[6:56] Speaker 2: was playing with other monsters on Ohio State's defense. But
[7:00] Speaker 2: you look at his production, his TFLs, his sacks, he
[7:03] Speaker 2: was more productive than Vita Vail was coming out of
[7:05] Speaker 2: Washington however long ago that was. And I don't feel
[7:08] Speaker 2: like people talk about Caden McDonald as potentially being one
[7:11] Speaker 2: of those game-wrecking forces on the interior. But that's kind
[7:14] Speaker 2: of where we're at in this draft, man. We're talking
[7:16] Speaker 2: about D-tackles, you know, about 24 hours, a little more
[7:19] Speaker 2: than 24 hours away from the start of day one.
[7:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, man, but I feel like There's an argument to
[7:24] Speaker 1: be made that this draft is going to fuck around
[7:26] Speaker 1: and get Ryan Day fired. Every time I look up
[7:29] Speaker 1: and somebody's talking about this draft, it's some Ohio State monster.
[7:35] Speaker 2: And it's the truth. It's the damn truth. And I
[7:37] Speaker 2: feel like the reason why they're not a two-time champion
[7:40] Speaker 2: is because of the guy playing quarterback. And I happened
[7:42] Speaker 2: to coach against that quarterback, and he was great in
[7:44] Speaker 2: high school, but I think that all the questions that
[7:46] Speaker 2: exist in terms of what he can be at the
[7:48] Speaker 2: college level and at the next level are totally valid.
[7:51] Speaker 2: And that ultimately is going to fall on on a
[7:53] Speaker 2: guy like Brian Day, and if they lose, and in
[7:56] Speaker 2: losing Brian Hartline, if they're not able to bring in
[7:58] Speaker 2: those dynamite wide receivers year over year and develop them
[8:01] Speaker 2: in the first round picks or top 15 picks, then
[8:04] Speaker 2: we might have to bring that conversation up again about
[8:06] Speaker 2: whether or not he's good enough to continue on as
[8:08] Speaker 2: Ohio State's head coach. A program that does not feel
[8:11] Speaker 2: good about winning 10 games, and it's probably the only one,
[8:14] Speaker 2: you know, north of the Mason-Dixon line that gets to
[8:16] Speaker 2: say that they can operate that way.
[8:18] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:19] Speaker 1: So how rigid are you on, like, positional value when
[8:22] Speaker 1: it comes to the draft?
[8:24] Speaker 2: I would say it's not a guiding principle for me.
[8:26] Speaker 2: It can be a tiebreaker, but it's not a guiding
[8:28] Speaker 2: principle for me. And it's funny that we're talking about
[8:30] Speaker 2: Katie McDonald as a defensive tackle and Jeremiah Love as
[8:33] Speaker 2: a running back in that context. Because if you were
[8:36] Speaker 2: to draft Jeremiah Love, let's say third overall, because I
[8:38] Speaker 2: know that there's some smoke out there that Arizona might
[8:40] Speaker 2: be interested, he would be making more than Josh Jacobs
[8:43] Speaker 2: is making right now coming into the league. And that's
[8:46] Speaker 2: pretty rich, but I watch Jeremiah Love and I'm like,
[8:49] Speaker 2: why can't he be better than Josh Jacobs right now
[8:52] Speaker 2: in the league? Like, I think that It's aspirational to
[8:55] Speaker 2: draw this comp. And I think that maybe some people
[8:57] Speaker 2: who didn't watch Kansas City at the time might not
[8:59] Speaker 2: appreciate it. But I watched Jeremiah Love and I see
[9:01] Speaker 2: Jamal Charles. And if Jamal Charles was being dropped in
[9:04] Speaker 2: this draft right now, you would be talking about him
[9:06] Speaker 2: like he was going to be a top five, top
[9:08] Speaker 2: 10 pick. So like I said, it's not the end
[9:11] Speaker 2: all be all for me. I do think that you
[9:13] Speaker 2: have to weigh it. But ultimately, the shit that matters
[9:15] Speaker 2: is what's on tape. And Jeremiah Love is the best
[9:18] Speaker 2: player in this draft. And the only reason why he's
[9:20] Speaker 2: not going number one overall is because of the two
[9:23] Speaker 2: letters next to his name. and not what he is
[9:25] Speaker 2: as a football player.
[9:26] Speaker 1: Well, in line with that, are you surprised that the
[9:29] Speaker 1: Bengals were willing to give up the number 10 pick
[9:31] Speaker 1: in the draft to pay a defensive tackle $ 28 million
[9:34] Speaker 1: extra when you might have been able to get one
[9:36] Speaker 1: cheaper in this draft?
[9:38] Speaker 2: Surprised that Dexter Lawrence could go for that? No. Surprised
[9:41] Speaker 2: that Cincinnati would do that? Yes.
[9:43] Speaker 1: There you go.
[9:44] Speaker 2: I think that that's the real conversation, right, is that
[9:47] Speaker 2: they would give away a top 10 pick. You're assuming
[9:50] Speaker 2: that with a quarterback and two wide receivers, that should
[9:52] Speaker 2: be good enough to where you're not picking– in the
[9:54] Speaker 2: top 10 and that you would give that away for
[9:56] Speaker 2: a defensive tackle approaching 30 who wants to be paid, which.
[10:00] Speaker 2: I know Bengals fans were happy with me when I
[10:01] Speaker 2: tweeted it out a few days ago, but that sounds
[10:03] Speaker 2: very similar to an edge rusher who was approaching 30
[10:06] Speaker 2: a couple seasons ago, and looked around and said, where's
[10:08] Speaker 2: my guaranteed money? And Cincinnati said, your guaranteed money is
[10:12] Speaker 2: what we already paid you. You're going to play out
[10:14] Speaker 2: this contract, brother. All right?
[10:16] Speaker 1: Why are you asking questions you know the answer to, player?
[10:18] Speaker 2: Exactly. Why are you coming over here and tapping my pockets, dog?
[10:21] Speaker 2: You spent it. That's where your money is. You see
[10:23] Speaker 2: that house you're living in? You spent it. That car
[10:26] Speaker 2: you drove up in here? That's where your guaranteed money went.
[10:28] Speaker 2: Why are you talking to me?
[10:29] Speaker 3: All right?
[10:30] Speaker 1: So.
[10:31] Speaker 2: I think that that was a bigger shock for me,
[10:33] Speaker 2: but I do think that's instructive when we talk about
[10:35] Speaker 2: the draft in terms of, like, the way that these
[10:37] Speaker 2: picks are going to be moved is going to be
[10:39] Speaker 2: different than what we typically associate in terms of draft
[10:42] Speaker 2: pick value because teams are kind of, I think, acquiescent
[10:45] Speaker 2: to the fact that you're not going to find a
[10:47] Speaker 2: blue-chip prospect, I don't think, once you get outside of, like,
[10:50] Speaker 2: the top eight or so.
[10:52] Speaker 1: Where are you on Reuben Bain? And I ask that because, like,
[10:57] Speaker 1: it's 2026. His name is Reuben, and he play like
[11:00] Speaker 1: a Reuben. And the value of having him. That bro
[11:02] Speaker 1: looked like a Reuben too. Yeah, yeah.
[11:05] Speaker 2: He's like you.
[11:06] Speaker 1: With the great transcript, but the MSAT scores ain't really hitting, right?
[11:09] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[11:10] Speaker 1: Everything that you see tells you he's going to be
[11:12] Speaker 1: a beast, except he measures poorly at maybe the place
[11:16] Speaker 1: most important, most people would say, for your defense, allow
[11:18] Speaker 1: me to measure, which is arm length. And he out here,
[11:21] Speaker 1: you know, he right here. You know what I'm saying?
[11:24] Speaker 1: He ain't got it. He ain't got it. He's Mr.
[11:25] Speaker 1: Potato Head when it comes to that part. Where would
[11:28] Speaker 1: you go with him?
[11:30] Speaker 2: I think once you're outside of that top eight-ish, I
[11:33] Speaker 2: think he's in play. I've been consistently mocking him in
[11:36] Speaker 2: the top five when we do these mock drafts, just
[11:38] Speaker 2: based off of what you hear from people around the
[11:41] Speaker 2: league and people who are tuned in to executives around
[11:44] Speaker 2: the league. But if it were me and my pick,
[11:46] Speaker 2: anytime you see that percentile and it's less than five
[11:51] Speaker 2: at any critical factor, and we're talking about, you know,
[11:54] Speaker 2: first percentile arm length for edge rushers, it is really
[11:57] Speaker 2: hard for me to look past that especially when you
[12:00] Speaker 2: think about what makes for a successful edge rusher in
[12:02] Speaker 2: the league. It's funny. I was listening yesterday to you
[12:04] Speaker 2: and Nate Tice talk about the 2011 draft and talk
[12:07] Speaker 2: about guys like Robert Quinn. And you guys started going
[12:09] Speaker 2: down memory lane to some of those other players that
[12:11] Speaker 2: we don't think about that have 100 plus sacks and
[12:13] Speaker 2: played for over a decade in the league. And that
[12:16] Speaker 2: arm length shows up because the moment that something goes
[12:19] Speaker 2: wrong with Reuben Bain, whether you're playing against an elite
[12:21] Speaker 2: tackle or you lose a step or you do suffer
[12:24] Speaker 2: an injury and now you don't have that great burst,
[12:26] Speaker 2: that great get off, Are you going to be able
[12:28] Speaker 2: to turn the corner on a Panay Sewell with first
[12:30] Speaker 2: percentile arm length? I'm not so certain. I'm just not
[12:34] Speaker 2: so certain. And to me, if you're talking to edge rushers,
[12:36] Speaker 2: I love who he is as a player. He's like
[12:38] Speaker 2: a Tasmanian devil in terms of fitting the run and
[12:41] Speaker 2: setting edges. But that don't get you paid top five
[12:44] Speaker 2: pick money. And if it were me, especially now with
[12:47] Speaker 2: all the news about the car accident and people in
[12:50] Speaker 2: the league can say whatever they want about what they
[12:52] Speaker 2: knew and what they're OK with. You're telling me you're
[12:54] Speaker 2: bringing in baggage, you got short arms, and I'm not
[12:56] Speaker 2: sure about exactly what your ceiling is going to be,
[12:59] Speaker 2: or that you might have to wait until we get
[13:00] Speaker 2: past pick 12 or something like that.
[13:03] Speaker 1: So if he was like 285 instead of 260, could
[13:07] Speaker 1: you think maybe you could move him inside and make
[13:09] Speaker 1: something happen? Absolutely. Like you kind of do with guards
[13:11] Speaker 1: and tackles on offense?
[13:13] Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah. We were talking about a 285, 290-pound guy
[13:15] Speaker 2: who has short arms but played the way that he played.
[13:20] Speaker 2: Get ready to learn three technique, buddy. You ever watch
[13:23] Speaker 2: some Warren Sapp? You ever watch any of those guys?
[13:29] Speaker 2: Let's get you on the interior and talk about beating
[13:32] Speaker 2: some double teams and using that swim move on pass rushes.
[13:36] Speaker 2: That's where I would have him, and I don't think
[13:37] Speaker 2: that he's going to be able to play that way
[13:38] Speaker 2: in the league. And I think that if you're a
[13:40] Speaker 2: team that's drafting him, while you love the tape and
[13:43] Speaker 2: you can make an argument that he's the best edge
[13:45] Speaker 2: rusher coming into the class, I just don't know, man.
[13:47] Speaker 2: You're going to have a hard time convincing me that
[13:49] Speaker 2: this is going to work out when you look up three,
[13:51] Speaker 2: four years from now.
[13:52] Speaker 1: Hey, man, what's the story on this Jordan Tyson fella?
[13:55] Speaker 1: I had never heard of him. Now apparently everybody wants
[13:57] Speaker 1: to give him zillions of dollars.
[13:59] Speaker 2: My comparison for him is kind of like a Stefan
[14:02] Speaker 2: Diggs-esque receiver, right? Who is a number one receiver by name,
[14:07] Speaker 2: maybe not a number one wide receiver by the platonic
[14:10] Speaker 2: ideal of what you're thinking of, right? Because he's a
[14:12] Speaker 2: player you can feed targets to. He can play in
[14:14] Speaker 2: the slot. He can separate. I think his catch radius
[14:17] Speaker 2: is actually a lot better than what he gets credit for.
[14:19] Speaker 2: I think he gets knocked for injuries and you watch
[14:22] Speaker 2: some of the clips where he does get hurt on.
[14:23] Speaker 2: I think, especially at Colorado, I think that that clip's
[14:25] Speaker 2: gone around a bunch where he gets left hanging over
[14:27] Speaker 2: in the middle of the field and he gets absolutely smoked.
[14:30] Speaker 2: And I think that's where he tears up his knee.
[14:32] Speaker 2: I understand why some people might be concerned because you
[14:34] Speaker 2: don't just see this physically dominating type of prospect. You
[14:38] Speaker 2: don't see Jamar chase level ability after the catch, but man,
[14:41] Speaker 2: I watched that dude run routes and he's a better, he's,
[14:44] Speaker 2: He's what people thought Jerry Judy was supposed to be
[14:46] Speaker 2: coming out of Alabama is what I would say. If
[14:49] Speaker 2: I were to try to find a more recent comp,
[14:51] Speaker 2: I think that he is a better route runner than
[14:53] Speaker 2: Jerry Judy. I think his hands and his ball tracking
[14:55] Speaker 2: is a little bit better than Judy. And I think
[14:57] Speaker 2: that his ceiling is higher than a player like that
[14:59] Speaker 2: as well. I don't think that that makes him a
[15:01] Speaker 2: top five pick the way that people are talking about
[15:03] Speaker 2: the Giants being interested in him. But I do think
[15:06] Speaker 2: that he's the most talented receiver overall in this class.
[15:09] Speaker 1: I thought that Jerry Judy, now Henry Ruggs, obviously it
[15:12] Speaker 1: was something else. But I thought that that was the
[15:15] Speaker 1: best set of wide receivers I had ever seen on
[15:17] Speaker 1: a college team. I mean, Jaden Waddell, young Jaden Waddell nonetheless,
[15:20] Speaker 1: but he was the fourth one at one point, and
[15:22] Speaker 1: Devontae Smith was the third.
[15:24] Speaker 2: Right. And then Devontae Smith put up Jerry Rice numbers
[15:29] Speaker 2: in his last year at Alabama. And I don't think
[15:31] Speaker 2: that anybody would have projected that he was going to
[15:33] Speaker 2: be the guy out of that group to go do it.
[15:35] Speaker 2: They were so stacked. I mean, they just had Henry
[15:37] Speaker 2: Ruggs playing out there, damn near on the sideline to
[15:39] Speaker 2: the field, and hey, buddy, just go run deep. And
[15:42] Speaker 2: if we get one on one, we're going to throw
[15:43] Speaker 2: it to you deep. Right. That that's how they were
[15:45] Speaker 2: able to use their wide receivers. And that's not even
[15:47] Speaker 2: mentioned in the fact that they had Josh Jacobs playing
[15:50] Speaker 2: running back there at one point in time. And they
[15:52] Speaker 2: still had, you know, a Nick Saban defense. I might
[15:54] Speaker 2: not have been 2012 Nick Saban defense, but was still
[15:58] Speaker 2: good enough to go win you a title. So, yeah,
[16:00] Speaker 2: I think that I think that, again, you know, Tyson
[16:03] Speaker 2: could have fit in in that mode and been like
[16:04] Speaker 2: a Jerry Judah. And I think in the league he
[16:06] Speaker 2: can be a high end number two, low end number one.
[16:09] Speaker 2: type of option, just not a guy. Again, I feel
[16:11] Speaker 2: like I'm going to be a broken record today. Not
[16:13] Speaker 2: a guy I would want to base my job security
[16:15] Speaker 2: off of. If I'm Joe Shane and I'm getting fired anyway,
[16:18] Speaker 2: I ain't about to have a wide receiver picked in
[16:20] Speaker 2: the top five that ain't Julio Jones or A.J. Green
[16:23] Speaker 2: attached to my resume.
[16:25] Speaker 1: You know what, man? I can't even lie. That's a
[16:27] Speaker 1: good 15 minutes to talk about the draft. You know
[16:29] Speaker 1: what I'm saying? I feel like that's enough to justify
[16:31] Speaker 1: when we put it on YouTube and we say NFL
[16:34] Speaker 1: draft preview and they go ahead and click them. They
[16:36] Speaker 1: can feel like they got what they deserve. Because you
[16:38] Speaker 1: led us into what I consider to be a proper
[16:41] Speaker 1: segue since we got to talking about Devontae Smith, who
[16:44] Speaker 1: had been one of the best number two receivers in
[16:46] Speaker 1: the NFL. Apparently, he's about to be one of the
[16:49] Speaker 1: best number one receivers in the NFL. And that would
[16:52] Speaker 1: be because the Eagles, it sounds though, through all reporting,
[16:56] Speaker 1: are going to trade A.J. Brown after June 1st to
[17:00] Speaker 1: the New England Patriots. Now, we'll get to the Patriots
[17:03] Speaker 1: part of this in just a second. I had said
[17:05] Speaker 1: that I would believe that the Eagles were trading A.J.
[17:09] Speaker 1: Brown when I saw it because I just don't believe
[17:12] Speaker 1: that they're a bunch of losers. This seems so very
[17:15] Speaker 1: clearly to me to be a loser move because he
[17:18] Speaker 1: hasn't said anything that wasn't true, right? People have asked,
[17:23] Speaker 1: and I don't even think he's really been that much
[17:24] Speaker 1: of a jerk about it. The book on the sideline
[17:26] Speaker 1: I do think was going a little extra, but it's
[17:28] Speaker 1: not like he's out here insulting people. He hasn't shown
[17:31] Speaker 1: his quarterback up on the field or any of that stuff.
[17:34] Speaker 1: Maybe he just wanted out, right? And maybe I don't
[17:37] Speaker 1: know what the package is that they feel like they
[17:39] Speaker 1: can get back. I don't know why Buffalo, for what
[17:40] Speaker 1: it's worth, also wouldn't be trying to jump in this
[17:42] Speaker 1: just as hard as they were. But I will always
[17:45] Speaker 1: look at this as being an indictment of the Eagles
[17:48] Speaker 1: more than A.J. Brown if they really decide they're going
[17:50] Speaker 1: to get rid of somebody that good just because he's
[17:52] Speaker 1: telling y'all this shit ain't good enough.
[17:55] Speaker 2: It's so funny, man. I get berated by Eagles fans,
[17:58] Speaker 2: which is funny in its own right, right? Because I'm
[18:00] Speaker 2: in their community. You can't get rid of me. And
[18:03] Speaker 2: you can't make me hate this team. You can't hate
[18:05] Speaker 2: me any more than I hate this team sometimes, okay?
[18:08] Speaker 2: I am very much a spiritual Negadelfian, as they say. But, yeah,
[18:13] Speaker 2: I mean, to me, I think if you were to
[18:14] Speaker 2: lay out just a timeline of events, you're talking about
[18:18] Speaker 2: a guy being shipped out and wanting to be out
[18:21] Speaker 2: and being frustrated and the fans being frustrated with him
[18:24] Speaker 2: because after he won a Super Bowl, after a relatively
[18:26] Speaker 2: down offensive year, he came back to the locker room
[18:29] Speaker 2: and said, after I thought about it, I actually enjoy
[18:32] Speaker 2: just whooping a corner's ass more than holding up the
[18:35] Speaker 2: Lombardi trophy, which– I can't speak for fans, but for
[18:38] Speaker 2: me as a football person, that's the kind of wide
[18:40] Speaker 2: receiver I want. I need you to be unhinged enough
[18:43] Speaker 2: to operate on that kind of paradigm.
[18:45] Speaker 1: Not just operate on the paradigm. Say it out loud.
[18:49] Speaker 2: Exactly. After you won a championship.
[18:52] Speaker 1: Right, exactly. I now know for a fact this is
[18:56] Speaker 1: no longer speculation.
[18:57] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[18:58] Speaker 1: I've done both. That other thing was cool.
[19:01] Speaker 2: It's better. It's just better. The trophy is nice. It's cool.
[19:05] Speaker 2: It's shiny. I see my reflection in it. I like
[19:08] Speaker 2: looking in a corner's eyes and this motherfucking knowing he
[19:11] Speaker 2: can't fuck with me at all. That brings me more joy.
[19:14] Speaker 2: That's the kind of wide receiver I want. And then
[19:16] Speaker 2: this year, you think about that gaming stream where he's
[19:19] Speaker 2: on Madden and he's talking about, you know, sounding like
[19:21] Speaker 2: a homeboy in the boondocks when he and Riley go
[19:25] Speaker 2: back to Chicago about struggle is up, brother. Hey, oppression
[19:30] Speaker 2: is up, brother. I'm not getting a rock. That's what
[19:33] Speaker 2: that's really what's going to make me happy here. And
[19:35] Speaker 2: I can't get my hands on it. And that he
[19:37] Speaker 2: was right, ultimately, about the design of the offense being
[19:40] Speaker 2: off over the last two years, that he was right
[19:42] Speaker 2: about the fact that good things happen when I get
[19:44] Speaker 2: the ball. And ultimately, I think that what happened here
[19:47] Speaker 2: is what typically happens with the team that just won
[19:49] Speaker 2: a title. Everybody, you know, kind of rallies around the
[19:52] Speaker 2: quarterback and the quarterback can do no wrong. And the
[19:55] Speaker 2: moment that that wide receiver drops a pass, the moment
[19:57] Speaker 2: that that wide receiver misses a block on a run,
[20:00] Speaker 2: the moment that wide receiver jogs on a route instead
[20:02] Speaker 2: of sprinting all the way through when the ball is
[20:03] Speaker 2: overthrown as a result, Now it's all that guy's fault.
[20:06] Speaker 2: And now he's got to go. And I'm right there
[20:09] Speaker 2: with you. I wouldn't have imagined that Philadelphia would be
[20:11] Speaker 2: the team to say, hey, we know you're the better
[20:13] Speaker 2: player in this drama. We know that we win championships
[20:17] Speaker 2: and compete for championships because of you. But this is
[20:19] Speaker 2: an untenable situation. We got to send you off to
[20:21] Speaker 2: another team that wants to win a championship because we
[20:24] Speaker 2: can't look at our quarterback. And maybe this is changing,
[20:26] Speaker 2: but we haven't been able to look at our quarterback
[20:28] Speaker 2: and our head coach and whatever offensive coordinator is in
[20:31] Speaker 2: the building and say, anytime he don't touch the ball,
[20:33] Speaker 2: it's y'all fault. And if he's got a problem with y'all,
[20:37] Speaker 2: we got a problem with y'all too.
[20:39] Speaker 1: So that's the thing that I also found interesting in
[20:42] Speaker 1: this is that that long ESPN report seemed to announce
[20:48] Speaker 1: to the world that the Eagles themselves find the Jalen
[20:51] Speaker 1: Hurts experience to be somewhat untenable, at least if it
[20:53] Speaker 1: continues at the rate at which it is going, right?
[20:57] Speaker 1: That's how they seem to feel about it. But they
[20:59] Speaker 1: still clearly decided, all right, ride this out, right? One
[21:04] Speaker 1: more year, you're going to be the one to do this. Okay.
[21:10] Speaker 1: And maybe you just decide that A.J. Brown at 29
[21:12] Speaker 1: years old, you don't know how long this will go,
[21:14] Speaker 1: so you can't stand to put up with one more
[21:17] Speaker 1: year of this discord or whatever it is that they
[21:19] Speaker 1: have in between them. I don't know. I feel like, though,
[21:22] Speaker 1: you're really putting your quarterback on the clock even more so. Like,
[21:26] Speaker 1: I haven't heard anything about what about if these two
[21:28] Speaker 1: fellas go, like, hang out for the weekend or something
[21:31] Speaker 1: like that. Like, maybe that's happened. Maybe there's been the
[21:34] Speaker 1: grand attempt to hash it out and we just haven't
[21:36] Speaker 1: found out about it. But the Eagles are going to
[21:39] Speaker 1: be worse for this. And I just don't feel like
[21:41] Speaker 1: they could be a team that's in the business of
[21:43] Speaker 1: getting worse.
[21:44] Speaker 2: Well, the report is one thing. And this is one
[21:46] Speaker 2: thing I really enjoy about Philadelphia is that they always
[21:48] Speaker 2: have some kind of drama. You know, there's always some
[21:51] Speaker 2: histrionics going on with the organization. But the great thing
[21:54] Speaker 2: about them is that they are easy to read because
[21:56] Speaker 2: Jeffrey Lurie speaks with his money. And if he believes
[21:59] Speaker 2: that you're a guy you can win a title with,
[22:01] Speaker 2: that extension gets done. If Howie Roseman believes that you're
[22:04] Speaker 2: a player that will help boost this team towards winning
[22:06] Speaker 2: a championship, the extensions get done early.
[22:09] Speaker 1: Right.
[22:10] Speaker 2: And it's for long term money. And they're willing to
[22:12] Speaker 2: do whatever cap games they need to to make the
[22:14] Speaker 2: math work out in the end. And it was very
[22:16] Speaker 2: telling to me that around the same time that report
[22:18] Speaker 2: came out, which is when owners meetings were happening. Somebody pulled,
[22:22] Speaker 2: you know, the reporters had Jeffrey Lurie to the side
[22:24] Speaker 2: and they were asking, hey, so what's going on with
[22:27] Speaker 2: Jalen's contract situation? We're planning to extend them. Right. And
[22:30] Speaker 2: that Jeffrey Lurie, excuse me, thought that you were talking
[22:33] Speaker 2: about Jalen Carter and not Jalen Hurts. Because Jalen Hurts'
[22:37] Speaker 2: money is not even a conversation right now.
[22:39] Speaker 1: Okay?
[22:41] Speaker 2: That's where I think heads are at in Philadelphia.
[22:44] Speaker 1: You say Jalen Carter, he's like, yeah, no brainer.
[22:47] Speaker 2: Right. Exactly. We got no problem with that. No, that
[22:50] Speaker 2: money is being worked on right now. True Rosenhouse is
[22:52] Speaker 2: on the other line. We're going to make that one work.
[22:54] Speaker 2: That other Jalen guy, hey, buddy, you're going to have
[22:58] Speaker 2: to make something shake if you want to get paid again.
[23:00] Speaker 2: And I think that if things don't go well this year,
[23:03] Speaker 2: the same way we got this report coming out before
[23:05] Speaker 2: the draft, I think we were going to hear it much,
[23:07] Speaker 2: much earlier, the same way we did with Carson Wentz
[23:10] Speaker 2: about a half decade ago, that people are starting to
[23:12] Speaker 2: get tired of whatever leadership, former leadership that Jalen is
[23:16] Speaker 2: putting out there, that they're tired and don't feel like
[23:18] Speaker 2: you can win a championship with this guy, that they
[23:21] Speaker 2: lost a number one wide receiver to another contender for it.
[23:24] Speaker 2: This is just the way things go. Ultimately, the best
[23:27] Speaker 2: thing about Philadelphia is that we're going to look up
[23:29] Speaker 2: in what is this six, eight months from now? And
[23:33] Speaker 2: it seems probably going to be nine and four, right?
[23:36] Speaker 2: Heading into the last month of the season and everybody's
[23:38] Speaker 2: going to be feeling great. But right now Jalen is
[23:41] Speaker 2: on the clock. And I think that he would be
[23:42] Speaker 2: wise to recognize that and to address some of the
[23:44] Speaker 2: things in that report that the team says that they
[23:47] Speaker 2: want to see from their quarterback going forward.
[23:49] Speaker 1: And the one thing he's got on his side though,
[23:51] Speaker 1: is the solution to Carson Wentz was taken Jalen Hurts in,
[23:55] Speaker 1: was it the third round, second round? I can't remember which. Yeah.
[23:59] Speaker 1: In 2020. what do they think they're going to do?
[24:03] Speaker 1: Todd Simpson, right? Like, like what is, what, what is,
[24:05] Speaker 1: what is the plan that leads you to the place?
[24:08] Speaker 1: Because otherwise I just don't know how readily and easily
[24:11] Speaker 1: you could just make the decision on what you're going
[24:12] Speaker 1: to do. Like, think about it. This says a lot
[24:14] Speaker 1: about this draft. The Arizona Cardinals do not have a
[24:18] Speaker 1: quarterback and we're hearing them talk about drafting a running
[24:22] Speaker 1: back running back in the top third overall pick.
[24:24] Speaker 2: Okay.
[24:25] Speaker 1: Like, whoa, that guy ain't there.
[24:29] Speaker 2: I think the drama starts. if the Eagles trade up
[24:33] Speaker 2: to go get a guy like Garrett Nussmeier in the
[24:35] Speaker 2: second or third round, right? If you see them put
[24:38] Speaker 2: some of that draft capital on the line to go
[24:40] Speaker 2: bring in another backup quarterback, because they already have three
[24:43] Speaker 2: on the roster, as is that plan that will be
[24:46] Speaker 2: on the active roster after they went and traded for
[24:48] Speaker 2: Andy Dalton. So if they go out and they bring
[24:49] Speaker 2: in a guy like Nussmeier, whose dad was a quarterback's
[24:52] Speaker 2: coach here a couple of years ago in Philadelphia. So
[24:56] Speaker 2: they've done a lot of background. They know the guy
[24:57] Speaker 2: very well. He was on the sideline for the Super
[25:00] Speaker 2: Bowl that they won in New Orleans. That's where I
[25:02] Speaker 2: think you start to see them maybe just looking over
[25:05] Speaker 2: the horizon and seeing what the next era might look
[25:09] Speaker 2: like in case they do have to make a move
[25:10] Speaker 2: on their current quarterback.
[25:12] Speaker 1: All right. Coming up next, the possibility is that A.J.
[25:16] Speaker 1: Brown may go to the Patriots. But that's not what
[25:20] Speaker 1: we're going to talk about.
[25:20] Speaker 2: That ain't what we're talking about at all.

[28:32] Speaker 1: I will say this, though, that A.J. Brown trade, if
[28:34] Speaker 1: the Patriots do make that one, you guys will get better, right?
[28:38] Speaker 1: Like this is, regardless of what anybody else thinks about A.J. Brown,
[28:43] Speaker 1: clearly he's Mike Vrabel's kind of guy, right? Vrabel has,
[28:46] Speaker 1: I am sure that A.J. Brown is easier to deal
[28:49] Speaker 1: with now than he was when he was young. Just
[28:51] Speaker 1: know how people work. That's probably the case. So he
[28:54] Speaker 1: got a different version of him that was not experiencing
[28:57] Speaker 1: nearly the same level of team success that this other
[29:00] Speaker 1: one was. And he's still like not as kind of
[29:01] Speaker 1: guy we need in this building.
[29:03] Speaker 2: Absolutely. And I want to pair my young quarterback who
[29:07] Speaker 2: looked like a deer in the headlights in the playoffs
[29:09] Speaker 2: with this personality. This is not typically what people in
[29:12] Speaker 2: the league would say they want to pair their young
[29:14] Speaker 2: quarterback with. It says a lot about Mike Bray would say, yeah,
[29:16] Speaker 2: bring all that quote unquote bullshit over here. I know
[29:19] Speaker 2: what to do with this guy. He was fine when
[29:21] Speaker 2: he was with me, right? That is very, I think,
[29:23] Speaker 2: maybe appreciate to talk about relationships in this regard, but
[29:26] Speaker 2: this is very much a, oh, I know this headache.
[29:28] Speaker 2: I know exactly how to deal with this headache.
[29:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like, look, maybe your hand ain't strong like mine.
[29:32] Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You can't hold this down.
[29:35] Speaker 1: Mine answer the phone when I call. Look, A.J. Brown,
[29:37] Speaker 1: to me, even if he's not necessarily the best receiver,
[29:42] Speaker 1: there's something to be said for a dude, what do
[29:44] Speaker 1: you call himself, always open. He really is, though. Like
[29:47] Speaker 1: the Anquan Bolton archetype of, look, man, just throw it
[29:50] Speaker 1: over here, dog. I'll work it out.
[29:52] Speaker 2: I don't want to hear none of that coverage bullshit.
[29:54] Speaker 2: Don't tell me where the safety was at.
[29:55] Speaker 1: All right.
[29:56] Speaker 2: Did you see me? If you saw number 11, then
[29:59] Speaker 2: that's where the ball is supposed to be going.
[30:01] Speaker 3: Right.
[30:01] Speaker 1: That's it. And that I can't imagine how reassuring that
[30:05] Speaker 1: is for a young quarterback. Like you are probably too
[30:07] Speaker 1: young to remember this, but young Brett Favre had Sterling
[30:12] Speaker 1: Sharp and Sterling Sharp suffered the neck injury right before
[30:15] Speaker 1: it really blew up. Charlie Sharp had a year. We
[30:17] Speaker 1: had something like 130, 140 catches. And it was clear
[30:20] Speaker 1: that Brett Favre, who did not know what a nickel
[30:23] Speaker 1: defense was when he got to the NFL, he was
[30:25] Speaker 1: obviously not out there doing no quantum physics, man. He
[30:28] Speaker 1: was like, I'm throwing it to the dude that's always open.
[30:31] Speaker 3: Period.
[30:32] Speaker 2: That's a fact. That's a fact. I mean, I think
[30:34] Speaker 2: about Julio. That is exactly how I think about Julio Jones.
[30:37] Speaker 2: Is Matt Ryan new? Progression is great. What Kyle Shanahan
[30:41] Speaker 2: called through my helmet is awesome. What I want to
[30:45] Speaker 2: do is going to find that big transformer-looking motherfucker standing
[30:49] Speaker 2: on the outside. And the moment that it looks like
[30:52] Speaker 2: he's got a half a stride on a guy, that
[30:54] Speaker 2: ball is going in his direction, and I'm not going
[30:56] Speaker 2: to think twice about it.
[30:57] Speaker 1: Brother, Matthew Stafford had seven years of trading wheel passes.
[31:02] Speaker 1: Just throw the ball to Calvin Johnson. I am sure
[31:06] Speaker 1: he will know what to do.
[31:08] Speaker 2: I can't go wrong. You know the saying, can't go
[31:10] Speaker 2: broke taking a profit, man. I cannot go wrong getting
[31:13] Speaker 2: the ball to this dude out there.
[31:15] Speaker 1: But the thing with the Patriots, though, let's find out
[31:18] Speaker 1: how good they really are, right? Because they're not.
[31:21] Speaker 2: If I'm being honest, they weren't.
[31:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, they had a couple of decent breaks.
[31:26] Speaker 2: I think, and decent is an understatement, right? I think C.J.
[31:29] Speaker 2: Shroud had a rough end to the season overall, but
[31:33] Speaker 2: five turnovers to get you to the AFC title game.
[31:36] Speaker 2: You could do a lot worse as a quarterback than
[31:38] Speaker 2: being able to sit on the ball because your opponent
[31:40] Speaker 2: is handing it away over and over again. not having
[31:43] Speaker 2: to see Bo Nix for all the frustrations that I
[31:45] Speaker 2: have with him as a player, not having to see
[31:47] Speaker 2: him at all, and then being able to play in
[31:50] Speaker 2: the weather, that's a great advantage to have as a
[31:52] Speaker 2: second-year quarterback. And this is just an offense that just
[31:55] Speaker 2: really wasn't all that great throughout the postseason, right? They
[31:58] Speaker 2: couldn't run the ball. They were very predictable running the ball.
[32:00] Speaker 2: And Drake May, I think week by week, which is
[32:03] Speaker 2: probably the most amazing thing to me about that playoff run,
[32:06] Speaker 2: you can make an argument that every time we saw
[32:08] Speaker 2: him on Sunday, he was a worse version of himself
[32:10] Speaker 2: than he was the week before. He's got progressively worse,
[32:14] Speaker 2: and I think that ultimately you need a guy like A.J. Brown,
[32:16] Speaker 2: I think, to be able to get a player like
[32:18] Speaker 2: Drake May out of his head when he can't tell
[32:21] Speaker 2: what defenses are doing or when he's trying to hold
[32:22] Speaker 2: the ball too long to try to push it downfield.
[32:25] Speaker 2: It feels very good to see a linebacker-sized human being
[32:29] Speaker 2: on that post route running right down the middle of
[32:31] Speaker 2: the field.
[32:32] Speaker 1: Well, I had mentioned that I thought that Buffalo needs
[32:34] Speaker 1: to make a run at this, and I think it's
[32:35] Speaker 1: interesting because Buffalo is in one of those weird years
[32:41] Speaker 1: where It was clear to me that Sean McDermott was
[32:44] Speaker 1: on the clock for this year. Apparently it wasn't clear
[32:47] Speaker 1: to anybody else, but the truth is they still got
[32:50] Speaker 1: to the divisional round of the playoffs. They had a
[32:52] Speaker 1: classic Buffalo ending of the season, but it was not
[32:55] Speaker 1: enough to save Sean McDermott's job. Now, granted, I think
[32:58] Speaker 1: McDermott had his time. I don't think they did him wrong,
[33:00] Speaker 1: but that is still telling everybody else that you're on
[33:03] Speaker 1: the clock here, including you first year head coach. you're
[33:07] Speaker 1: on the clock and starting off on the clock. Cause
[33:10] Speaker 1: you were, you was part of the problem, buddy. You
[33:12] Speaker 1: was here when we weren't getting it done. We are
[33:14] Speaker 1: clearly saying he's what's wrong and you're going to be
[33:17] Speaker 1: what's right. And if he ain't what's right, buddy.
[33:20] Speaker 2: Listen, they had to go back and try to clarify
[33:22] Speaker 2: the record because their owner came out and said that
[33:26] Speaker 2: coaching staff that brought in Keon Coleman as a wide
[33:28] Speaker 2: receiver is their fault that we don't have a number
[33:31] Speaker 2: one receiver in this room. And then they had to
[33:33] Speaker 2: go in the back room and be like, Hey, Oh yeah,
[33:35] Speaker 2: that's right. We're hiring the guy. off of that same staff,
[33:38] Speaker 2: the guy who was calling plays for this offense. He
[33:41] Speaker 2: is going to be our head coach and was part
[33:42] Speaker 2: of that decision-making process. So let's actually end up throwing
[33:46] Speaker 2: Sean McDermott a little bit further under the bus because
[33:48] Speaker 2: we're probably starting this off on the wrong foot. But
[33:50] Speaker 2: I do think, I'm surprised, you bringing them up, I'm
[33:53] Speaker 2: surprised that they went for DJ Moore instead of dealing
[33:56] Speaker 2: a first-round pick or whatever it would have taken to
[33:58] Speaker 2: go get an A.J. Brown. Because I absolutely would have
[34:01] Speaker 2: much rather have had Brown if I'm Josh Allen. I
[34:05] Speaker 2: went from Stephon Diggs, who was his own Head case,
[34:08] Speaker 2: so to speak. And now you're bringing in a guy
[34:10] Speaker 2: whose lasting memory in Chicago is him. I don't like
[34:14] Speaker 2: using a Q word, but maybe making a decision to
[34:17] Speaker 2: take himself out of the progression on that last interception
[34:20] Speaker 2: that Caleb Williams threw. And now I'm going to entrust
[34:23] Speaker 2: the entire passing game being built around that guy. When
[34:26] Speaker 2: I could have had the dude who was going to
[34:28] Speaker 2: throw an attitude if I don't get the ball, because
[34:31] Speaker 2: if you get me the ball on a slant, I'm
[34:32] Speaker 2: going to be throwing these DBs off me like I'm
[34:35] Speaker 2: like I'm, you know, Orlando Brown size playing against some
[34:38] Speaker 2: private school kids.
[34:39] Speaker 1: Right.
[34:39] Speaker 2: That's what I look like out on the perimeter. I
[34:41] Speaker 2: think that they would have been much better off getting
[34:43] Speaker 2: a guy like him. And now they might have to
[34:44] Speaker 2: face off against him twice in a division.
[34:47] Speaker 1: And then that becomes the next part. Now you have
[34:49] Speaker 1: to deal with him. Because you're right, going to get
[34:51] Speaker 1: DJ Morris, that's bargain shopping. Like, if it was that
[34:54] Speaker 1: clear to everybody else that A.J. Brown's going to be
[34:56] Speaker 1: in the market, I don't think you immediately go settle
[34:59] Speaker 1: with the bargain shop. And now maybe this is also
[35:00] Speaker 1: partially because if A.J. Brown wants to go to the Patriots,
[35:03] Speaker 1: then you don't want him... If he wants to go
[35:07] Speaker 1: to the Patriots, that means he doesn't want to go
[35:08] Speaker 1: to the Bills, right? Right. Maybe that's the argument that
[35:11] Speaker 1: you make, which I don't think is implausible because he
[35:13] Speaker 1: does not suffer silently, but it appears that he will
[35:16] Speaker 1: not be suffering if you just throw him the ball.
[35:18] Speaker 1: And I could be wrong, but Josh Allen seems like
[35:21] Speaker 1: the sort of dude who likes those kinds of guys.
[35:24] Speaker 2: Every time he's had a guy who's wanted the ball,
[35:26] Speaker 2: you know what happened? They got the ball a whole
[35:28] Speaker 2: goddamn lot.
[35:29] Speaker 1: All right.
[35:29] Speaker 2: He gave the ball to Stephon Diggs so damn much.
[35:31] Speaker 2: I wasn't sure he had anything left in his legs
[35:33] Speaker 2: when he was leaving Buffalo. It just looked like he
[35:35] Speaker 2: couldn't run anymore after getting hundreds upon hundreds of targets.
[35:39] Speaker 2: And yeah, I think that a guy like Josh Allen
[35:40] Speaker 2: absolutely wants to throw to a guy like that instead
[35:43] Speaker 2: of these two tight ends. I mean, it's nice having
[35:45] Speaker 2: Dawson Knox. It's nice, you know, to have a Khalil
[35:48] Speaker 2: Shakir as a slot receiver, undersized guy who can go
[35:52] Speaker 2: create after the catch. I want a dude who's going
[35:54] Speaker 2: to be lifting with me when we're in the weight room.
[35:56] Speaker 2: That's what I want to throw to. I want to
[35:58] Speaker 2: take my shirt off and him take his shirt off
[36:00] Speaker 2: and we both look like we've been doing the same
[36:01] Speaker 2: thing all offseason. That's how Josh Allen strikes me. as
[36:05] Speaker 2: a football player.
[36:07] Speaker 1: Hey, man. Did you see that press conference Mike Vrabel did?
[36:11] Speaker 2: I saw bits and pieces. Anytime I see the I
[36:16] Speaker 2: had tough conversations quotes, I got to be honest, my
[36:19] Speaker 2: eyes immediately start glazing.
[36:21] Speaker 1: Immediately start glazing over. So for people who don't know
[36:24] Speaker 1: about this, Mike Vrabel had been photographed at a resort
[36:29] Speaker 1: with a woman named Diana Rossini, who is an NFL
[36:33] Speaker 1: insider and has since resigned from her position at her
[36:36] Speaker 1: job for a whole host of reasons right we had
[36:40] Speaker 1: talked about this on the show if you don't remember
[36:42] Speaker 1: it's the one when me and Dominique was talking about
[36:44] Speaker 1: how they was interlocking fingers right okay um I've seen
[36:50] Speaker 1: a lot of people make the point about how it's
[36:52] Speaker 1: a double standard because Diana has to suffer consequences and
[36:55] Speaker 1: Mike Vrabel does not. And the truth is they do
[36:57] Speaker 1: different jobs and they answer to different people. This isn't
[37:02] Speaker 1: how double standards work because I assure you if people
[37:04] Speaker 1: thought Adam Schefter was fucking Mike Vrabel, it would be
[37:07] Speaker 1: a thing. It's not quite that. People want the world
[37:13] Speaker 1: to be fair. And in this situation, there's one person
[37:16] Speaker 1: that Mike Vrabel has to answer to in this. And
[37:19] Speaker 1: her last name is also Vrabel. And I got the
[37:22] Speaker 1: feeling that he has begun to do some answering to
[37:24] Speaker 1: her because Diana's responses to this have had an air
[37:27] Speaker 1: of defiance. And Mike Vrabel got up talking about all
[37:30] Speaker 1: these tough conversations that he's had. And he had to
[37:34] Speaker 1: come and he had to talk to the team about it.
[37:37] Speaker 1: And it's a personal matter and all of these things.
[37:40] Speaker 1: He tried to offer some measure of contrition while also
[37:44] Speaker 1: not saying anything about what exactly it was that he
[37:48] Speaker 1: was talking about. And what I found somewhat stunning than
[37:51] Speaker 1: it was not really stunning because I've been doing this
[37:53] Speaker 1: job for a while, but people allowed for this.
[37:57] Speaker 2: Right.
[37:57] Speaker 1: Right. He got up there and talked for all that time,
[38:01] Speaker 1: but never said what it is that he was talking about.
[38:05] Speaker 1: And I wish there had been one person that would
[38:07] Speaker 1: have raised their hand and been like, Hey man, I
[38:10] Speaker 1: gotta be honest with you, man. I've been out of
[38:12] Speaker 1: the country for like, three weeks. I have no idea
[38:16] Speaker 1: what it is that you're talking about. What were these
[38:20] Speaker 1: tough conversations about? Who were you? Why did you have
[38:23] Speaker 1: to tell the team? Could you just run that five minutes?
[38:26] Speaker 2: Why are you referencing your family?
[38:27] Speaker 1: The draft is in a couple days.
[38:30] Speaker 2: Why are we talking about the home life? I need
[38:32] Speaker 2: to understand exactly what's going on here.
[38:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, like somebody could artistly just be like, no, what? Guys,
[38:37] Speaker 1: what is it? I don't know. No, no, tell me. Like,
[38:42] Speaker 1: I feel left out, man, because somebody tell me exactly
[38:45] Speaker 1: what it is. And then another person around the room
[38:46] Speaker 1: would be like, he got caught with Diana at a
[38:51] Speaker 1: resort before the owner's meeting. You didn't hear anything about that? Mike,
[38:55] Speaker 1: that's what happened, right? It was you and Diana at
[38:57] Speaker 1: the owner's meeting? Was that what it was? Like, that
[39:00] Speaker 1: was what I wanted. Like, there's no way. If you
[39:03] Speaker 1: want to raise the question as to whether or not
[39:05] Speaker 1: he had to answer for it, that's on you. I
[39:07] Speaker 1: think it was impossible for him not to. But once
[39:10] Speaker 1: he did it, it's time to make it hard. Right. Right.
[39:13] Speaker 1: Once he did, it is time to make this difficult.
[39:16] Speaker 2: Well, and I think to that point, they just had
[39:19] Speaker 2: a press conference less than a week ago with the
[39:21] Speaker 2: GM where the head coach was auspiciously not there. okay
[39:27] Speaker 2: and they weren't taking questions about anything that had to
[39:29] Speaker 2: do with the head coach and the only quote we
[39:31] Speaker 2: got about the head coach was how involved he was
[39:33] Speaker 2: in the drafting process i thought that that was the
[39:36] Speaker 2: statement i thought that was new england doing the new
[39:38] Speaker 2: england thing and saying, hey, if you want to talk
[39:40] Speaker 2: to the people who are here about what we want
[39:42] Speaker 2: to talk to you about, that's it, and we're moving
[39:44] Speaker 2: forward from there. And for this to be done from
[39:47] Speaker 2: what seems like, from what I can track, was not
[39:50] Speaker 2: very widely announced, right? I don't think that this was
[39:54] Speaker 2: a very prepared thing that Mike Rabel was going to do.
[39:57] Speaker 2: I don't think that the Patriots organization had some master
[40:00] Speaker 2: plan where they were going to stagger out when people
[40:03] Speaker 2: were going to be available. And Mike Redwood don't strike
[40:06] Speaker 2: me as a man that in many phases of his
[40:07] Speaker 2: life has to walk into a door, hat in hand,
[40:10] Speaker 2: soft voiced, right? Shoulders slouched. He don't strike me as
[40:14] Speaker 2: that kind of person. And just seeing, seeing that besides
[40:17] Speaker 2: seeing him up at the podium, looking that way. I
[40:19] Speaker 2: was like, oh man, like you said, I think the
[40:21] Speaker 2: much tougher press conference, the much tougher questions were happening
[40:25] Speaker 2: behind the door that we can't get through. Okay. And
[40:27] Speaker 2: I would love to have been party to that combo.
[40:29] Speaker 1: They could not allow the first time that he spoke
[40:31] Speaker 1: to the media to be after they made draft picks.
[40:34] Speaker 3: Right.
[40:35] Speaker 1: That wasn't an option. They had to get it out
[40:38] Speaker 1: of there. You're right. Something has led Diana to believe
[40:45] Speaker 1: that she could continue to take that approach that she
[40:47] Speaker 1: was taking. Somebody was believing it. Nobody believed it when
[40:54] Speaker 1: Mike Vrabel tried it.
[40:56] Speaker 2: I want to word this properly because this is all
[41:00] Speaker 2: happening for a A former employer of mine, and I
[41:04] Speaker 2: have a lot of people over there that I have
[41:06] Speaker 2: a lot of respect for. I will say the first
[41:10] Speaker 2: 24 hours or so in the wake of that news
[41:12] Speaker 2: breaking and seeing big bosses, the kind of names that
[41:17] Speaker 2: you can't add to a direct message on your Slack
[41:19] Speaker 2: to get in touch with are coming out being very
[41:24] Speaker 2: puffed out chest and very sure that my employee is
[41:28] Speaker 2: going to be vindicated in this. And then to see
[41:30] Speaker 2: the reporting after the fact, which- All I can ask is,
[41:34] Speaker 2: what did you think was going to happen? You said
[41:36] Speaker 2: you were doing one thing. And then your boss comes
[41:38] Speaker 2: back and says, can you show me anybody that can
[41:42] Speaker 2: corroborate this one thing that you're saying was happening and
[41:45] Speaker 2: you don't have any evidence? I think we've all worked
[41:48] Speaker 2: jobs where we tried to say that we had to
[41:50] Speaker 2: miss work because of whatever circumstance. And we knew if
[41:53] Speaker 2: we got pushed to provide some kind of proof on
[41:55] Speaker 2: that measure, we would have been in some hot water.
[41:58] Speaker 1: Where is your doctor's note?
[42:00] Speaker 2: Okay?
[42:01] Speaker 1: Okay? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Flu bug. Flu bug.
[42:05] Speaker 2: We get it. Yeah, uh-huh. That affects everybody the same.
[42:08] Speaker 2: I want to see letterhead from whatever your medical group
[42:12] Speaker 2: in your local area saying that this is why you
[42:14] Speaker 2: can't be here. And the fact that you weren't.
[42:15] Speaker 1: Able to provide that. Could you please bring me a
[42:16] Speaker 1: program from your grandmother's funeral?
[42:18] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[42:19] Speaker 1: I didn't take one with y'all?
[42:22] Speaker 2: Damn, is that a flat itinerary?
[42:23] Speaker 1: Is that a newspaper, perhaps?
[42:25] Speaker 2: I need some kind of notification the flights were canceled.
[42:27] Speaker 2: I was watching the morning news. It ain't look like
[42:30] Speaker 2: no inclement weather to me when I was getting in
[42:32] Speaker 2: my car this morning. Okay?
[42:34] Speaker 1: No, it did not go, but she wrote that out.
[42:38] Speaker 1: I don't think Mike Vrabel got as far with that
[42:41] Speaker 1: story as she had. Mike Vrabel tried to walk in
[42:44] Speaker 1: with the, well, you know. And them arms got folded.
[42:48] Speaker 1: And he folded right after, right? Like nobody, nobody even
[42:54] Speaker 1: tried to believe him. In fact, Diana might have been
[42:56] Speaker 1: better off if nobody had believed her in the first place.
[42:59] Speaker 2: That's really the thing, right? I think she tried to
[43:01] Speaker 2: take the Eddie Murphy, the Eddie Murphy raw response. Wasn't me, okay?
[43:08] Speaker 2: Wasn't me. You did not see me. And it seems
[43:10] Speaker 2: like maybe Mike did try that. And like you said,
[43:13] Speaker 2: I think that he probably got halfway through whatever explanation
[43:15] Speaker 2: he was going through and made eye contact with who
[43:18] Speaker 2: he was delivering that message to and realized very quickly,
[43:21] Speaker 2: this ain't going to land in this audience.
[43:23] Speaker 1: I'm going to have to fix what I'm saying.
[43:24] Speaker 3: No, no, no, no.
[43:24] Speaker 1: His house, it wasn't going to land. And then before us,
[43:26] Speaker 1: I think the thing is, truthfully, there's no great explanation
[43:30] Speaker 1: for why it matters on our end. I've seen people
[43:32] Speaker 1: try to make the argument, well, maybe Mike Vrabel's been
[43:35] Speaker 1: tampering and telling that reporter too much. That's the game. Like,
[43:39] Speaker 1: the game is people telling and not telling truth. Regardless
[43:44] Speaker 1: of what it is in ways that serves them, right?
[43:46] Speaker 1: It's a big old game of liar's poker in that way.
[43:48] Speaker 1: Everybody's doing a little here, not doing a little there,
[43:50] Speaker 1: whatever it is. If you want to make a morals
[43:53] Speaker 1: clause argument that Mike Vrabel has embarrassed the operation, which
[43:57] Speaker 1: he most certainly did, Then you can do that again.
[44:00] Speaker 1: As I said before, the problem is the man that
[44:03] Speaker 1: can't say nothing to him about it is buddy from
[44:05] Speaker 1: the massage parlor. He don't get to come in here
[44:08] Speaker 1: and start making that sort of noise to my rebel.
[44:10] Speaker 1: So there's nothing. So therefore, he comes out here and
[44:12] Speaker 1: talks all this stuff. And the media guys are like, well, actually,
[44:15] Speaker 1: we don't really have anything to gain from this because
[44:17] Speaker 1: they're no real. consequences that are going to come from
[44:20] Speaker 1: asking these questions. Therefore, nobody asked the questions, but I
[44:25] Speaker 1: just wish one messy person would have got in there.
[44:28] Speaker 1: Like one TMZ mole would have snuck in and be like, Hey, Hey, Hey,
[44:33] Speaker 1: John Jackson, TMZ. Are you talking about when you were
[44:37] Speaker 1: with that woman that you're not married to guys, is
[44:41] Speaker 1: that what he's talking about? I can't really tell. Like,
[44:44] Speaker 1: is this how these work here? You just let people
[44:45] Speaker 1: be unclear like this.
[44:48] Speaker 2: Somebody had to point it out to me because I
[44:49] Speaker 2: didn't really realize it when the story broke that they
[44:53] Speaker 2: were two hours away from Phoenix. Okay. Sedona and Phoenix,
[44:58] Speaker 2: nice little drive away from each other. Okay. That's me
[45:04] Speaker 2: in San Diego going to LA. Okay.
[45:06] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[45:06] Speaker 2: And if I was in LA doing something untoward. And
[45:09] Speaker 2: I told my lady and everybody else that I was
[45:12] Speaker 2: actually in San Diego the entire time because of some
[45:15] Speaker 2: event that was happening in San Diego. And there was
[45:17] Speaker 2: pictures of me down in Englewood. There's no explanation. I'm
[45:21] Speaker 2: not supposed to be. You got me. Okay.
[45:23] Speaker 1: There's no.
[45:24] Speaker 2: You got me.
[45:25] Speaker 1: Your best bet is to start off in surrender mode, right?
[45:28] Speaker 2: Absolutely.
[45:29] Speaker 1: We are down by three touchdowns with a minute left.
[45:35] Speaker 1: We could keep dropping back in passing. Or we could
[45:40] Speaker 1: kneel it out so that LT doesn't come around the
[45:43] Speaker 1: edge and break my back.
[45:45] Speaker 2: Listen, it was absurd when it happened, but I understood.
[45:48] Speaker 2: And you're in New York, so I'm sure you can
[45:50] Speaker 2: remember this. When Joe Judge was backed up to the
[45:52] Speaker 2: one-yard line with a horrible offense, he had to do
[45:56] Speaker 2: some calculus on.
[45:57] Speaker 1: And he put it on third down.
[45:58] Speaker 2: Yes, and took them two knees late in the game.
[46:03] Speaker 2: Or those two quarterback sneaks late in the game. You
[46:05] Speaker 2: have to do some calculus on. Yes, I could pass
[46:08] Speaker 2: the ball. We could run some real offense here and
[46:10] Speaker 2: try to get out of the shadow of our own
[46:11] Speaker 2: end zone. Or I can just get the hell out
[46:14] Speaker 2: of here. I don't want to be at MetLife no more.
[46:17] Speaker 2: They don't want to look at me no more either.
[46:19] Speaker 2: Let's just do what we got to do to get
[46:22] Speaker 2: on and move on with our lives.
[46:23] Speaker 1: I think, though, the biggest statement on what sports media is,
[46:27] Speaker 1: is the fact that he could get away with that.
[46:29] Speaker 2: 100%.
[46:29] Speaker 1: Or the fact that it even happened in the first place.
[46:32] Speaker 1: Like it says so much about what we do that
[46:34] Speaker 1: isn't fully serious, but kind of has the potential to
[46:37] Speaker 1: be serious. But in the end, nobody wants to get
[46:39] Speaker 1: boxed out. So nobody was going to be the person.
[46:42] Speaker 1: Like I wish there was like one person or like
[46:44] Speaker 1: the old head columnist who'd been there forever. So you
[46:47] Speaker 1: can't do anything about it. Like if Bob Ryan had
[46:50] Speaker 1: decided to be there and just said, Hey, you know
[46:55] Speaker 1: what you did. Just fess up. Tell them the truth.
[47:03] Speaker 2: I was going to say in that media market too,
[47:04] Speaker 2: I know there was somebody that was getting elbowed sitting
[47:08] Speaker 2: in that press corps. Like, I know you want to
[47:11] Speaker 2: say it.
[47:11] Speaker 1: I know you want to say it. This was old
[47:13] Speaker 1: school New York. Like, can you imagine if this had
[47:15] Speaker 1: been on page six and everybody involved was in New
[47:18] Speaker 1: York City?
[47:21] Speaker 2: You would have had to invoke some moral clause in
[47:23] Speaker 2: because this one ain't going away with just one press conference.
[47:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Somebody, it would have been all bad for
[47:29] Speaker 1: all parties involved, Jack. All parties involved. All right, I'll
[47:33] Speaker 1: ask you one last thing before we get out of
[47:34] Speaker 1: here because I see this come up this morning. I
[47:36] Speaker 1: hadn't thought about it in a long time. The Cowboys
[47:39] Speaker 1: are not talking about no long-term deal with George Pickens.
[47:42] Speaker 1: And I don't see how this ends well.
[47:46] Speaker 2: We literally talked about it. We talked about this in
[47:49] Speaker 2: the fall. that I didn't want to be the one
[47:52] Speaker 2: holding that bag, having to hand that money off to
[47:55] Speaker 2: George Pickens. And it feels very much like the Cowboys
[47:57] Speaker 2: got to the end of the year feeling great, and
[47:59] Speaker 2: then it was time to talk contracts, and everybody had
[48:02] Speaker 2: to sit and think, like, damn, $ 20- plus million. I mean,
[48:07] Speaker 2: that is why receivers get paid these days. But that one?
[48:11] Speaker 1: Well, then he played himself into the 30-40 reign. Exactly.
[48:14] Speaker 2: Exactly. And this is worst-case scenario, because he can make
[48:18] Speaker 2: that demand. And he can look at Dallas in the
[48:20] Speaker 2: face and say, it's April. What else you going to do?
[48:24] Speaker 2: You going to try to go win a championship with
[48:26] Speaker 2: your over 30 quarterback who has had these lower leg
[48:29] Speaker 2: issues and this offense that didn't pop off again until
[48:32] Speaker 2: you had me to play with C.D.
[48:33] Speaker 1: Lamb?
[48:34] Speaker 2: You going to send me on my way or you
[48:36] Speaker 2: are going to tell me not to talk to you
[48:37] Speaker 2: until next offseason? That is that's really I think is
[48:40] Speaker 2: the worst part about it. It's less of being nervous
[48:43] Speaker 2: about handing off the money and more about that. The
[48:45] Speaker 2: more you slow play this, the more you risk. George
[48:49] Speaker 2: Pickens turning into George Pickens again. Because he ain't got
[48:54] Speaker 2: no reason not to.
[48:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, they got the good version of George Pickens for
[48:57] Speaker 1: the most part last year. Spaced out George Pickens. That's
[49:02] Speaker 1: still just, what are you doing right now?
[49:06] Speaker 2: I said it then, the best thing you could have
[49:08] Speaker 2: done is take that great season, go trade him for
[49:11] Speaker 2: a high second round pick or a late first round pick.
[49:14] Speaker 2: And everybody, you get to get yelled at for a
[49:16] Speaker 2: week being Jerry Jones and giving away another good player,
[49:18] Speaker 2: but you don't have to be responsible. for what he
[49:21] Speaker 2: gets paid. That would have been the best-case scenario, and
[49:23] Speaker 2: now you are here back against the wall hoping that
[49:26] Speaker 2: Tiger don't go Tiger. While I'm borrowing all these comedian analogies,
[49:30] Speaker 2: we hoping that Tiger don't go Tiger and start eating
[49:32] Speaker 2: faces in this locker room.
[49:34] Speaker 1: Oh, man, this is like... This draft, I had said
[49:39] Speaker 1: that whatever is going to be about this draft was
[49:41] Speaker 1: actually going to be like the surrounding stuff was going
[49:44] Speaker 1: to be it. Like I was hoping A.J. Brown would
[49:46] Speaker 1: get trapped, traded while this draft was going on. Right.
[49:49] Speaker 1: Like this is it seems that everything around the league
[49:52] Speaker 1: now is more interesting to the draft, which actually doesn't
[49:54] Speaker 1: really happen that much. Right.
[49:57] Speaker 2: I mean, I'm still waiting to see if Max Crosby
[49:59] Speaker 2: is going to remain a Raider.
[50:01] Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like they're like, oh, he's just like,
[50:04] Speaker 1: all right, well, cool. I guess I'm a Raider now. No,
[50:06] Speaker 1: I don't. I don't.
[50:06] Speaker 2: It don't have to be that way. It don't got
[50:09] Speaker 2: to be that way. You probably weren't supposed to get
[50:10] Speaker 2: two first round picks to begin with. So maybe we
[50:13] Speaker 2: just need to reconvene and take what we can get
[50:15] Speaker 2: for this edge rusher who does not match our timeline
[50:17] Speaker 2: at all.
[50:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, this his his whole everything has been all this.
[50:22] Speaker 1: And by the way, we still have a chance that
[50:23] Speaker 1: this will be a season where Deshaun Watson is the
[50:25] Speaker 1: starting quarterback for an NFL team.
[50:28] Speaker 2: Yikes.
[50:29] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers.
[50:32] Speaker 2: That's the other thing is that this draft is happening
[50:34] Speaker 2: in Pittsburgh. And one of the questions I've been rattling
[50:36] Speaker 2: around in my brain is, what can Aaron Rodgers do
[50:39] Speaker 2: between now and about four o'clock my time tomorrow to
[50:43] Speaker 2: make himself the main character again? Because I know he's
[50:46] Speaker 2: thinking about it.
[50:47] Speaker 1: That's right. He has done this before.
[50:49] Speaker 2: Yes, I know he's thinking about it. And this is
[50:53] Speaker 2: a head coach with the Steelers that they did not
[50:56] Speaker 2: leave on the greatest of terms. And this might be
[50:58] Speaker 2: a nice little way to, you know, kind of stick
[51:00] Speaker 2: a knife in again.
[51:02] Speaker 1: And they say that they've been talking and everything else.
[51:04] Speaker 1: The Steelers are operating as though they believe Aaron Rodgers
[51:06] Speaker 1: is going to come back, and I just don't see
[51:07] Speaker 1: why that is ever your play.
[51:09] Speaker 2: Why is that a good enough answer? That's the thing
[51:11] Speaker 2: I don't get. Aaron Rodgers can say what he wants.
[51:14] Speaker 2: You are the Pittsburgh Steelers. Why are you beholden to
[51:17] Speaker 2: a 42-year-old?
[51:18] Speaker 1: Right, but the draft has no quarterback. The idea that, well,
[51:21] Speaker 1: maybe they'll just take Ty Simpson. If Ty Simpson falls
[51:24] Speaker 1: to them, hey, man, We'll see how it ultimately turns
[51:27] Speaker 1: out with Jackson Dart. But if that quarterback slips to
[51:29] Speaker 1: the 20s, you may as well wait till the 30s
[51:31] Speaker 1: before you take him. Like you show me the quarterback
[51:33] Speaker 1: from the 20s that works out. That range, that rank,
[51:36] Speaker 1: for whatever reason, if nobody else in time decided I
[51:40] Speaker 1: need to go up and go get that dude, then
[51:42] Speaker 1: you don't want that dude either.
[51:44] Speaker 2: Because that means you had questions. That means you weren't sure. Otherwise,
[51:48] Speaker 2: he would have been a top 15 guy.
[51:50] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson is the one exception, and that is one
[51:53] Speaker 1: of the most exceptional cases of a prospect ever because
[51:56] Speaker 1: they're like, yo, we can't get them to pick up
[51:57] Speaker 1: the phone, man.
[51:58] Speaker 2: Right. Exactly.
[52:01] Speaker 1: Who knows where Lamar Jackson would have gone if he
[52:03] Speaker 1: had just had some people around to answer the phone. Right.
[52:07] Speaker 2: Thank goodness.
[52:09] Speaker 1: You get the guy in the 20s, that's your Brady Quinn.
[52:11] Speaker 1: That's your Johnny Manziel, right? Teddy Bridgewater worked out best
[52:15] Speaker 1: case scenario for a guy that you get in the
[52:17] Speaker 1: 30s outside of Lamar Jackson. But once those guys get
[52:20] Speaker 1: down there, if you're the only one that think this
[52:22] Speaker 1: is a good idea, when the guys get to like
[52:24] Speaker 1: the second and third round, it's because everybody thinks they
[52:27] Speaker 1: might get a steal.
[52:28] Speaker 2: Right.
[52:28] Speaker 1: They don't think they're getting a steal at 20. They're
[52:31] Speaker 1: just like, I don't know.
[52:33] Speaker 2: If the Jets got two first-round picks and they got
[52:36] Speaker 2: the first pick in the second round, if they thought
[52:38] Speaker 2: that highly about this, they'd go make this happen. Or
[52:41] Speaker 2: they got the second overall pick and the first pick
[52:43] Speaker 2: in the second round, I would go make this happen
[52:45] Speaker 2: if I needed to. The fact that you have heard
[52:47] Speaker 2: no smoke at all that their GM is trying to
[52:50] Speaker 2: get back into the first round to go get Ty
[52:52] Speaker 2: Simpson should probably tell you if you're the Cardinals, if
[52:55] Speaker 2: you're any of these teams that might want to try
[52:57] Speaker 2: to weasel their way into the mid-20s to go grab them,
[52:59] Speaker 2: just wait. You will probably be better off for it.
[53:02] Speaker 1: And think of all the quarterbacks people have talked themselves into.
[53:06] Speaker 1: Keep it real. Jackson Dart was a talk yourself into
[53:09] Speaker 1: sort of guy. I think he outperformed what I thought
[53:12] Speaker 1: was possible from him as a rookie, but I don't
[53:14] Speaker 1: think that's a great quarterback.
[53:16] Speaker 2: You can't make the argument that's a good quarterback yet.
[53:19] Speaker 1: He's been fun. They had him, and he was handing
[53:22] Speaker 1: the ball. He a white boy with chains, and then
[53:25] Speaker 1: they had a John Riggins white boy that he was
[53:27] Speaker 1: giving the ball to, man. They was up here excited.
[53:30] Speaker 1: excited that shit was making them feel good.
[53:34] Speaker 2: You know i think that i feel like every fan
[53:36] Speaker 2: if there's any fan base who can appreciate those two
[53:39] Speaker 2: dynamics in the backfield it's the one that don't ever
[53:42] Speaker 2: want no black sergeant quarterback.
[53:43] Speaker 1: Yeah they look at jackson darren they're like oh yeah
[53:46] Speaker 1: that's close enough they see jackson darren like yeah that's
[53:48] Speaker 1: close enough but that's they talk themselves into that and
[53:51] Speaker 1: and where and where did they take them 25.
[53:56] Speaker 2: And he was just good enough to get his head
[53:58] Speaker 2: coach fired.
[53:59] Speaker 1: Yep.
[54:01] Speaker 2: That is the perfect line.
[54:03] Speaker 1: The GM that does that is putting his whole situation. Look,
[54:08] Speaker 1: you will not get fired for the quarterback you did
[54:10] Speaker 1: not draft. Exactly.
[54:12] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[54:13] Speaker 1: I never really thought about that until right now. The
[54:15] Speaker 1: quarterback you did not draft will not get you fired.
[54:18] Speaker 2: If Jackson Dart was that nice... then John Harbaugh would
[54:20] Speaker 2: have to report to Joe Shane and not be reporting
[54:22] Speaker 2: directly to ownership. Okay? Clearly, the Giants are telling you,
[54:26] Speaker 2: you don't get no extra credit for making that move,
[54:28] Speaker 2: big dog. That don't go on your resume the way
[54:30] Speaker 2: you think it does.
[54:32] Speaker 1: Hey, man. Deontay Lee. Check him out covering football for
[54:35] Speaker 1: the Ranger. My brother, I appreciate you.
[54:37] Speaker 2: Appreciate you always, bro.
