[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:19] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesdays this week with
[0:26] Speaker 1: the homie Joel from Missouri City. Now, right fast before we,
[0:29] Speaker 1: you know, You.
[0:33] Speaker 2: Just couldn't wait.
[0:34] Speaker 3: You just couldn't wait.
[0:35] Speaker 2: That's my greeting.
[0:35] Speaker 1: I was going, okay, all right, let me explain something
[0:38] Speaker 1: to the people right fast, and then we'll get back
[0:40] Speaker 1: to what just happened.
[0:41] Speaker 2: So we're doing something new.
[0:44] Speaker 1: Every Tuesday will now be Time Machine Tuesdays, where we
[0:48] Speaker 1: are going to look back. In time, in history, could
[0:51] Speaker 1: be sports history, could be regular history, could be music history.
[0:54] Speaker 2: Who's to say? But on Tuesdays, we're going.
[0:56] Speaker 1: To give you guys a chance to kind of look
[0:58] Speaker 1: back at different things, put some stuff in context.
[1:00] Speaker 2: Sometimes it'll be a book, for example.
[1:03] Speaker 1: Our buddy Howard Bryan has a book coming out called
[1:05] Speaker 1: Kings and Pawns about Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson. We'll
[1:08] Speaker 1: do that as a Time Machine Tuesday, for example. So
[1:10] Speaker 1: we try to, you know, try new things out. Basically,
[1:13] Speaker 1: now that we go on to four days a week,
[1:15] Speaker 1: It's important to be consistent in what we're doing. And
[1:18] Speaker 1: this allows us to be more consistent. This also allows
[1:20] Speaker 1: us some flexibility. There are also weeks where we take
[1:23] Speaker 1: some vacation. Y'all might still have some content out here.
[1:26] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? So all I'm saying is
[1:29] Speaker 2: you're welcome.
[1:33] Speaker 3: That's nice of you. That's nice of you to give
[1:35] Speaker 3: the people more of what they wanted.
[1:36] Speaker 1: All I'm saying is they ain't paying no extra. You
[1:38] Speaker 1: understand what I'm saying?
[1:39] Speaker 3: That's fine.
[1:40] Speaker 2: It's free.
[1:40] Speaker 3: It is free.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Somebody might, but it ain't going to be y'all, and
[1:44] Speaker 1: I'm doing it for you. Ergo, therefore, you know, that's
[1:48] Speaker 1: how that goes. So, that's how we're doing this with
[1:51] Speaker 1: Time Machine Tuesdays. Speaking of the Time Machine, you guys
[1:54] Speaker 1: on audio did not witness what just happened, but I
[1:58] Speaker 1: mentioned Joe from Missouri City, a.k.a. Joel Anderson of the ringer,
[2:03] Speaker 1: check him out on the ringer tailgate show, the blackest
[2:05] Speaker 1: college football show ever paid for by white people.
[2:09] Speaker 2: And that is not an exaggeration.
[2:11] Speaker 1: I don't, I don't think anybody's ever paid for two
[2:13] Speaker 1: thirds black on a college football show.
[2:16] Speaker 3: Do your two last dudes ever talk about college football?
[2:18] Speaker 1: I mean, I imagine they did every now and then,
[2:20] Speaker 1: but it wasn't a college football show.
[2:22] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
[2:23] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
[2:24] Speaker 1: Like, like it's a little different, but anyway, I know
[2:27] Speaker 1: this about Joel. And apparently it's become a thing on
[2:31] Speaker 1: that show because Van Lathan and Tate Frazier are every
[2:34] Speaker 1: day getting to know a little bit what we've already
[2:37] Speaker 1: known for a long time, which is they only made
[2:40] Speaker 1: one of this guy, right?
[2:40] Speaker 2: So anyway, Joel is adamant.
[2:46] Speaker 1: That he invented when one takes his palm and points
[2:52] Speaker 1: it toward the sky and raises it up, to indicate
[2:58] Speaker 1: raising the roof yeah joel addison is insistent that he
[3:02] Speaker 1: is the one who invented it and now that that
[3:04] Speaker 1: motion has become an antiquity an anachronism he has now
[3:08] Speaker 1: decided to reclaim it yeah and when you say it's
[3:12] Speaker 1: joel now joel is going to raise the roof like it's.
[3:18] Speaker 4: 1997 that's right that's right yeah man i mean things
[3:21] Speaker 4: things that are old become new all the time what's
[3:23] Speaker 4: the problem.
[3:25] Speaker 2: You're forcing the issue. That's what the problem is.
[3:27] Speaker 4: This is the way I greet people. People know when
[3:29] Speaker 4: I come on that that's what I do.
[3:31] Speaker 1: I know this is not how you greet people.
[3:35] Speaker 3: It's like a rap ad.
[3:37] Speaker 1: The reason I know this isn't how you just greet
[3:39] Speaker 1: people all the time and how I know it's new
[3:41] Speaker 1: is that when we did a live show in New
[3:44] Speaker 1: York together, you definitely did not do that when I
[3:46] Speaker 1: introduced you because I know if you had done that,
[3:49] Speaker 1: they would have thrown tomatoes at you. They already threw
[3:52] Speaker 1: tomatoes at you at your long-winded, convoluted explanation for how
[3:57] Speaker 1: you hated all these things about Nas and then rapped
[3:59] Speaker 1: it with, but Nas is my favorite rapper.
[4:01] Speaker 3: Wait, hold on. I did not say that I hated Nas.
[4:04] Speaker 1: I didn't say you hated Nas, but you had a
[4:05] Speaker 1: whole lot of things you didn't like about Nas. And
[4:07] Speaker 1: you had perplexed people in the front row. And then
[4:09] Speaker 1: at the end, you said, but Nas is my favorite rapper.
[4:12] Speaker 4: Yeah, because the thing was I was saying is that
[4:14] Speaker 4: I probably enjoy more Rick Ross albums than Nas albums.
[4:18] Speaker 3: And I don't think Rick Ross is a better rapper
[4:20] Speaker 3: than Nas.
[4:21] Speaker 4: I don't want to recreate that because, you know, the
[4:23] Speaker 4: funny thing about that night is that it was one
[4:25] Speaker 4: of those times I was like, man, I really do
[4:27] Speaker 4: not have the audience tonight.
[4:28] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[4:29] Speaker 4: I was just like, I'm saying things and it just
[4:31] Speaker 4: kind of settled over the audience.
[4:33] Speaker 2: Yeah. We also were getting heckled by 2Ray.
[4:38] Speaker 3: Man, your boy, man. Yeah, Trey was out there heckling.
[4:41] Speaker 2: He was heckling me. No, he was trying to heckle me, too.
[4:45] Speaker 1: It all got weird when I stopped and said, nobody
[4:47] Speaker 1: paid to see you, brother.
[4:48] Speaker 2: But anyway, Time Machine Tuesday.
[4:52] Speaker 1: We're going to talk about something that happened.
[4:56] Speaker 2: 20 years ago this week.
[4:58] Speaker 1: I believe it was 20 years ago yesterday, 20 years ago,
[5:00] Speaker 1: January the 5th, I believe, the year of our Lord, 2006.
[5:05] Speaker 1: at the Rose Bowl while we were still playing with
[5:07] Speaker 1: the somewhat sacrilegious idea of nighttime Rose Bowl games. This
[5:12] Speaker 1: was the BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl, but
[5:15] Speaker 1: it was the last time or the last year that
[5:17] Speaker 1: the BCS operated where they used the actual bowl rather
[5:22] Speaker 1: than it's the BCS championship game at.
[5:24] Speaker 2: The site of the Fiesta Bowl.
[5:26] Speaker 1: This was the Rose Bowl, January 2006, USC versus Texas,
[5:33] Speaker 1: and I can't think, and we got so many things
[5:36] Speaker 1: that we can set up in this, right? And there
[5:37] Speaker 1: are levels we're going to try to do this as
[5:39] Speaker 1: best as we can in an hour, right? It's the most,
[5:42] Speaker 1: at least for me, and you tell me if I'm wrong,
[5:44] Speaker 1: it's the most anticipated championship game that I could think of.
[5:48] Speaker 2: I honestly think ever.
[5:50] Speaker 1: Now, I don't have the greatest memory of, say, 1986,
[5:53] Speaker 1: January 1987 Fiesta Bowl, for example, or some others that
[5:57] Speaker 1: people could point to. But my recollection of that time,
[6:00] Speaker 1: and maybe it's just because I was rooting for Texas
[6:02] Speaker 1: at the time, but it was very clear to me
[6:04] Speaker 1: very early in that season, after Texas beat Ohio State
[6:07] Speaker 1: at the horseshoe, which is... Um, Vince Young legend game
[6:11] Speaker 1: number two out of Vince Young legend, three Vince Young
[6:14] Speaker 1: legend games, but that's Vince Young legend game number two.
[6:17] Speaker 2: After that game, to me, it seemed very clear.
[6:19] Speaker 1: This is going to be Texas and USC playing for
[6:22] Speaker 1: a national championship, USC playing for their third national championship.
[6:26] Speaker 1: And Texas, college football is a great underachiever.
[6:30] Speaker 2: In a number of ways.
[6:31] Speaker 1: Four years or the fourth season after bringing in one
[6:34] Speaker 1: of the greatest recruiting classes of all time with Vince
[6:36] Speaker 1: Young having finally started to establish himself on the scene.
[6:40] Speaker 2: This was the game that we were going to get.
[6:43] Speaker 4: You probably pissed off a lot of LSU fans by
[6:46] Speaker 4: saying it was their third straight national championship they were.
[6:49] Speaker 3: Playing for, but that's fine.
[6:50] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But the thing is, and I can't remember...
[6:54] Speaker 4: this was the, they went one and two wire to wire.
[6:58] Speaker 4: Like they started the season, preseason one and two and
[7:01] Speaker 4: ended the season is one and two. And so that
[7:04] Speaker 4: in and of itself is sort of incredible because think
[7:07] Speaker 4: about how many times like a team, you know, take
[7:09] Speaker 4: a loss early in the year and they play their
[7:11] Speaker 4: way back up.
[7:12] Speaker 3: And I think that's what, when you talked about.
[7:13] Speaker 4: The Ohio State game, because to your point, Texas did
[7:17] Speaker 4: not really win games like that at that point in
[7:19] Speaker 4: the program history, right? Like they, that was a game
[7:22] Speaker 4: that you kind of, even though they were number two,
[7:24] Speaker 4: you expected them to kind of go up to Columbus.
[7:26] Speaker 3: And lose that game.
[7:27] Speaker 2: Well, hold on, to be fair, they didn't play games
[7:29] Speaker 2: like that.
[7:30] Speaker 3: Fair point, yeah.
[7:31] Speaker 2: Like the big.
[7:32] Speaker 1: Non-conference, that era is kind of a return to a
[7:36] Speaker 1: certain intersectional football game type of thing that you did
[7:39] Speaker 1: not see.
[7:39] Speaker 2: But this was a home-and-home Texas-Ohio State, with Ohio State
[7:42] Speaker 2: also at the top of their game. Right, right.
[7:45] Speaker 4: They were number four when coming into that game, right?
[7:47] Speaker 4: And so, yeah, that game was very highly anticipated, very
[7:51] Speaker 4: similar to the Texas-Ohio State game this year. But yeah,
[7:54] Speaker 4: I can't think of another time when all season it
[7:58] Speaker 4: was setting up for us. Like, man, I hope they
[8:00] Speaker 4: don't stumble. I hope they don't lose. Because you wanted
[8:03] Speaker 4: to see, okay, like if USC... I mean, I think
[8:05] Speaker 4: the thing is at that point, it was more about
[8:07] Speaker 4: can USC win its third straight national championship than can
[8:10] Speaker 4: Texas beat them? But it was like, if there's a
[8:12] Speaker 4: team out there that can beat USC, it's probably them
[8:16] Speaker 4: boys down there in Austin.
[8:17] Speaker 2: Right.
[8:17] Speaker 1: And the national discourse around this was absolutely... usc and
[8:22] Speaker 1: their run at a third national championship by that time
[8:26] Speaker 1: they have won 20 something games to start the year
[8:28] Speaker 1: i think it was in the early 30s by the
[8:30] Speaker 1: time we get around to the game but the part
[8:34] Speaker 1: that i think would be interesting for younger people like
[8:37] Speaker 1: those who were not around or truly like able to
[8:40] Speaker 1: grasp what was going on in that time is usc
[8:45] Speaker 1: is usc has an argument for being the program of
[8:47] Speaker 1: the 1970s right it's really between usc and alabama I
[8:52] Speaker 1: would say it's the two schools that we really look
[8:53] Speaker 1: at as the two dominant powers. USC, to me, and
[8:56] Speaker 1: I think that this is often lost USC is what
[9:00] Speaker 1: Miami was like before Miami became Miami. USC in the
[9:05] Speaker 1: 1970s was that they had this incredible comparative advantage, which was,
[9:08] Speaker 1: you know, over the course of these decades, all these
[9:11] Speaker 1: black people.
[9:12] Speaker 2: Moved out here.
[9:13] Speaker 1: Right.
[9:14] Speaker 3: Yes.
[9:14] Speaker 1: And they moved out here and it's 12 month a
[9:17] Speaker 1: year football weather. And California is very similar to think
[9:21] Speaker 1: with Miami that gets lost is Miami isn't really close
[9:24] Speaker 1: to anything other than Miami.
[9:26] Speaker 2: Right. Right. Like it's a somewhat isolated location. all these
[9:31] Speaker 2: dudes out here in LA, right? Of a particular ambition, right?
[9:35] Speaker 1: If you have read The Warmth of Other Suns and
[9:37] Speaker 1: know anything about that first generation, there's a selection bias
[9:41] Speaker 1: to who the people were that decided, I'm going to
[9:42] Speaker 1: pack my shit up and go to LA and make
[9:44] Speaker 1: this happen, right?
[9:45] Speaker 2: They were basically immigrants.
[9:48] Speaker 1: Yes, but I say I bristle at what people talk
[9:50] Speaker 1: about that idea of an immigrant mentality where I'm like,
[9:52] Speaker 1: do you know what our people have had to do
[9:54] Speaker 1: to get anywhere, right? But moving to California is like
[9:58] Speaker 1: moving to Mars in a lot of ways when people
[10:01] Speaker 1: did that, right? This is the progeny of those people,
[10:05] Speaker 1: and USC had access to all of them. And the
[10:08] Speaker 1: school was right smack dab in the middle of the hood.
[10:12] Speaker 3: Right in the hood, man.
[10:13] Speaker 4: And I mean, the thing is, too, is that with USC,
[10:16] Speaker 4: so they had the comparative advantage of that they were
[10:18] Speaker 4: taking black people when a lot of other schools just
[10:21] Speaker 4: were not, or black people had been like, is it
[10:23] Speaker 4: okay for me to go to school here?
[10:25] Speaker 3: Right?
[10:25] Speaker 4: So, cause like USC was, if, if I recall, and you,
[10:28] Speaker 4: you tell me if I'm wrong here, USC was one
[10:30] Speaker 4: of the first places that had like nationally prominent black athletes.
[10:34] Speaker 4: I mean, OJ Simpson, you know, Marcus Allen, you know,
[10:39] Speaker 4: Ronnie Lott, guys like that.
[10:41] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[10:42] Speaker 4: And you tell me, I had a very specific visage.
[10:45] Speaker 4: There was like the USC black guy who was very
[10:47] Speaker 4: handsome and, very chiseled and had kind of like the
[10:49] Speaker 4: mini fro.
[10:50] Speaker 3: It wasn't always a fro.
[10:52] Speaker 5: OJ.
[10:52] Speaker 3: OJ. OJ. Yeah.
[10:53] Speaker 2: OJ.
[10:53] Speaker 1: OJ.
[10:54] Speaker 3: OJ is a.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Big deal in this discussion though. Cause OJ was that dude.
[10:57] Speaker 3: OJ was the prototype. OJ was the prototype.
[11:00] Speaker 4: Like he went out there, he was, you know, I mean,
[11:02] Speaker 4: I hate to say it this way, very well-spoken, right?
[11:05] Speaker 4: He appealed, and he intentionally tried to appeal to white
[11:09] Speaker 4: fans and white audiences. And so that was a, that
[11:11] Speaker 4: was the archetype. And so when other guys came back
[11:13] Speaker 4: out there, they were like, okay, like we can see
[11:15] Speaker 4: that we can be out here. We can thrive and
[11:17] Speaker 4: we can be, you know, we can be ourselves essentially,
[11:19] Speaker 4: but they all still kind of went from the same thing.
[11:21] Speaker 4: Cause I, again, when you look at Marcus Allen and
[11:23] Speaker 4: these guys, it's like, Oh, they look kind of the
[11:25] Speaker 4: same too.
[11:26] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[11:26] Speaker 2: Let me explain something to you right fast.
[11:28] Speaker 1: Also for people, when I talk about this in the
[11:30] Speaker 1: context of Miami and like having the talent, Marcus Allen
[11:34] Speaker 1: went to USC.
[11:36] Speaker 3: Oh man.
[11:36] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[11:37] Speaker 2: As a defensive back. Yeah. Okay? Like, the plan.
[11:42] Speaker 1: Marcus Allen was not supposed to play running back. He
[11:44] Speaker 1: was supposed to be a DB. The thing was, they
[11:48] Speaker 1: had Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, and Joey Browner.
[11:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Already.
[11:55] Speaker 2: And by the way, Anthony Munoz was blocking. Anthony Munoz.
[11:58] Speaker 2: Shout out to La Raza. See what I'm saying?
[12:02] Speaker 1: Charles White was also a player, like, Heisman Trophy winner
[12:05] Speaker 1: Charles White, also on the roster. Like, They just had it, right?
[12:11] Speaker 1: And then it became a similar situation to what we
[12:13] Speaker 1: saw with a few other schools that it's happened to
[12:16] Speaker 1: the Big Ten as the 70s and 80s came around
[12:19] Speaker 1: when other people started getting not just black people, but
[12:21] Speaker 1: also more black people. Then all of a sudden, you
[12:25] Speaker 1: didn't have your comparative advantage anymore. And so USC was
[12:29] Speaker 1: still pretty good through the 80s, but not what it
[12:31] Speaker 1: was in the 70s. And then in the 90s, the
[12:35] Speaker 1: wheels kind of came off.
[12:37] Speaker 4: They had that one Keyshawn Johnson year. And this is
[12:42] Speaker 4: what I also want to talk about too, because Keyshawn
[12:44] Speaker 4: was sort of a phenomenon too, right? Like that was,
[12:46] Speaker 4: it was again, kind of a throwback to that old
[12:48] Speaker 4: LA guy that is like nationally famous. And there's a
[12:52] Speaker 4: clip of Keyshawn Johnson talking about his draft day party
[12:55] Speaker 4: and everybody who showed up. And it's like, you know, Snoop,
[12:58] Speaker 4: like all these like, you know, famous hip hop artists
[13:01] Speaker 4: and and actresses anyways anyway so yeah but they were
[13:04] Speaker 4: not if you were if you were looking at usc
[13:06] Speaker 4: in 1994 when they played texas tech in the cotton
[13:09] Speaker 4: bowl right you'd be like what's the big deal with
[13:11] Speaker 4: usc like you wouldn't kind of understand it.
[13:12] Speaker 1: Would be like the green bay packers were yeah until
[13:15] Speaker 1: the far thing got going like what do you mean this.
[13:18] Speaker 4: Is like magic mckowski yeah yeah but it.
[13:20] Speaker 1: Was like they they were like the yankees were like
[13:23] Speaker 1: this for stretch too where they were absolutely like if
[13:25] Speaker 1: you were of a certain age, I don't even really
[13:27] Speaker 1: understand what it is that y'all talk about. Like USC
[13:30] Speaker 1: might've been what Nebraska is now. Right.
[13:33] Speaker 2: To kids like, Oh, this was a thing. Oh, okay.
[13:36] Speaker 1: Um, but they wound up with this crazy coaching search
[13:38] Speaker 1: where nobody wanted to take the job and they had
[13:41] Speaker 1: to settle for Pete Carroll and it took Pete Carroll
[13:43] Speaker 1: about half a year to get it going.
[13:46] Speaker 2: And then after that, it was on and popping, right?
[13:49] Speaker 1: They went to the orange bowl in 2002 and just
[13:52] Speaker 1: beat the doors off of Iowa and Palmer. Heisman Trophy winner.
[13:57] Speaker 1: Troy Palamalu was on. That was the first time I
[13:59] Speaker 1: saw Troy Palamalu and I was like, oh my God.
[14:01] Speaker 2: Right? Because they still have some guys because it was
[14:03] Speaker 2: still USC. It was still LA. They could still get
[14:06] Speaker 2: some cats. But in 2003, they split a national championship.
[14:11] Speaker 3: That's right.
[14:12] Speaker 1: Matt Leiner was the successor to Carson Palmer and he
[14:15] Speaker 1: was the quarterback.
[14:17] Speaker 2: But Lindale White.
[14:18] Speaker 1: And Reggie Bush both showed up on team that already
[14:21] Speaker 1: had dudes. They had Dudes on defense in particular. They
[14:26] Speaker 1: had dudes, dudes, dudes.
[14:29] Speaker 2: And.
[14:30] Speaker 1: Everything was different. Then you get to the 2004 season.
[14:33] Speaker 3: Okay.
[14:33] Speaker 1: And that's the year that Matt Leinart won the Heisman trophy.
[14:36] Speaker 1: And look, they were so good that it's a Pete
[14:38] Speaker 1: Carroll offense, man. So they just really kind of running
[14:41] Speaker 1: the ball. Oh yeah.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Like it wasn't anything fancy. It was like Miami.
[14:44] Speaker 1: It wasn't anything fancy. Florida state was the same way.
[14:48] Speaker 1: Our players are just so much better than your players.
[14:51] Speaker 1: And by the way, our second team players also so
[14:55] Speaker 1: much better than your first team players.
[14:58] Speaker 2: And they ran through America.
[15:01] Speaker 1: Only Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch gave them a challenge.
[15:04] Speaker 1: They went and played against the Oklahoma team in the
[15:07] Speaker 1: Orange Bowl that had the year before Heisman Trophy winner
[15:10] Speaker 1: and a freshman, Adrian Peterson, who ran for like 1900 yards.
[15:14] Speaker 2: And brother, it didn't matter. They beat the dog shit
[15:17] Speaker 2: out of them.
[15:17] Speaker 4: They broke that edition of Oklahoma. Like, Oklahoma was really
[15:22] Speaker 4: good for those years after because, you know, Bob Stoops
[15:24] Speaker 4: was a good coach.
[15:24] Speaker 1: I mean, we thought the 0-3 Oklahoma team at points
[15:26] Speaker 1: was the best college football team of all time.
[15:29] Speaker 4: I definitely thought that. And I didn't think it. I
[15:32] Speaker 4: was right there at that.
[15:32] Speaker 2: You were there when they beat Texas A & M
[15:34] Speaker 2: 77 to nothing.
[15:35] Speaker 4: When they beat Texas A & M 77. But then
[15:36] Speaker 4: I was at the Big 12 championship game in Kansas
[15:39] Speaker 4: when they lost to Kansas State.
[15:41] Speaker 3: And they lost 35-7. And it was like, what the
[15:44] Speaker 3: fuck just happened here?
[15:45] Speaker 4: But up until then. And then I was just like,
[15:47] Speaker 4: that must be a mulligan. They're still going to be
[15:50] Speaker 4: the national champion. And they went down to New Orleans
[15:52] Speaker 4: in the Sugar Bowl and lost to LSU. And that
[15:54] Speaker 4: was a half champion. You know, they split the championship
[15:56] Speaker 4: with USC that year.
[15:56] Speaker 3: So, yeah.
[15:58] Speaker 2: But USC ran through that 0-4 season.
[16:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Look at these scores.
[16:04] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[16:05] Speaker 2: 49-0, 42-10.
[16:06] Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, they.
[16:08] Speaker 1: Had some close games, right? Because they were still a
[16:10] Speaker 1: really young team. But the big thing is, they came
[16:13] Speaker 1: back the next year, and they were the biggest deal
[16:16] Speaker 1: in sports.
[16:17] Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
[16:17] Speaker 2: Like, the idea that they could win a.
[16:19] Speaker 1: Third national championship, that Matt Leinart, they told us that
[16:23] Speaker 1: he would be the number one pick. Clearly, he would not,
[16:25] Speaker 1: because he came back to school. He came back, and
[16:28] Speaker 1: then Reggie Bush, I can't explain to you. Like, Reggie Bush,
[16:32] Speaker 1: to me, Is maybe the last guy. I feel like
[16:36] Speaker 1: you tell me if I'm wrong here. All his fame
[16:38] Speaker 1: is as a result of being a college football player.
[16:40] Speaker 1: I think there's like a Kardashian element of fame that
[16:43] Speaker 1: maybe adds to that. But his athletic fame is because
[16:46] Speaker 1: of what a big deal Reggie Bush was at USC.
[16:49] Speaker 1: Nothing he did as an NFL player made him more
[16:51] Speaker 1: famous than he was walking into the league.
[16:54] Speaker 4: Was the Kardashian moment at USC or a little bit after?
[16:57] Speaker 2: No, it was after, but I think the fact that
[17:00] Speaker 2: that was even possible.
[17:01] Speaker 3: Possible, right. The fact that that was on the board.
[17:05] Speaker 1: Look, he was the famous one when that started. She
[17:10] Speaker 1: got more fame off of him than at first, at least,
[17:14] Speaker 1: that he got off of her as a result of that.
[17:16] Speaker 1: But I don't think it's possible for a football team
[17:19] Speaker 1: or a football player to be as famous as USC
[17:23] Speaker 1: was in 05 and as Reggie Bush was in particular. Like,
[17:26] Speaker 1: we don't care about coaches as much as we used
[17:28] Speaker 1: to care about coaches. We don't care about players as
[17:32] Speaker 1: much as we used to care about players.
[17:34] Speaker 2: Like, none of that lands like it did then.
[17:36] Speaker 4: Do you think Jaden Daniels is anywhere near as famous
[17:38] Speaker 4: as Reggie Bush.
[17:39] Speaker 3: Or Fernando Mendoza? Like, none of those guys, right?
[17:41] Speaker 4: Like, maybe the last Heisman that resonated that rang out
[17:44] Speaker 4: was like Manziel, right?
[17:46] Speaker 5: Yes.
[17:47] Speaker 2: Well, no, well, James Winston. Jameis Winston got really famous,
[17:50] Speaker 2: and then it got weird.
[17:51] Speaker 3: That's right.
[17:52] Speaker 2: That's right.
[17:53] Speaker 3: That's right.
[17:53] Speaker 1: Even Baker Mayfield, I don't feel like got this kind.
[17:56] Speaker 1: I don't think Joe Burrow got to be the kind
[17:58] Speaker 1: of famous that we're talking about with Reggie Bush.
[18:01] Speaker 2: Reggie Bush was famous like that before the Heisman.
[18:04] Speaker 3: Oh, man.
[18:04] Speaker 4: I mean, there were people that did not follow college
[18:06] Speaker 4: football who knew who Reggie Bush was, man.
[18:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, and guess what? Your girl was on that list.
[18:11] Speaker 5: Hey, man.
[18:12] Speaker 3: He was a very handsome guy, man.
[18:14] Speaker 2: But it was a whole nother thing, and he was.
[18:18] Speaker 2: Unreal to watch, right? He was.
[18:21] Speaker 3: Electric.
[18:22] Speaker 1: I make the argument that Reggie Bush was so unreal
[18:25] Speaker 1: that it hurt him in the NFL. He would have
[18:28] Speaker 1: been better if he was a little bit worse. Because
[18:32] Speaker 1: he was capable of doing those unreal things in college.
[18:36] Speaker 1: Them Tecmo Bowl runs where you start one side of the.
[18:38] Speaker 2: Field and you go all the way around to get back.
[18:41] Speaker 2: And the league, the league wasn't ready for that.
[18:43] Speaker 1: It took him a long time to figure out that
[18:46] Speaker 1: he couldn't do those things anymore. I, you know, this
[18:50] Speaker 1: is going to probably go back to people calling me
[18:52] Speaker 1: a hater, but I remember when he was going into
[18:54] Speaker 1: the league, I was like, I just don't see the
[18:56] Speaker 1: number two running back.
[18:57] Speaker 4: I just don't see a number two pick because he's
[18:59] Speaker 4: not going to be able to outrun people like that
[19:00] Speaker 4: in the NFL.
[19:01] Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
[19:02] Speaker 4: You said I was, I was, because at the time
[19:04] Speaker 4: it was like, should the Texans take Reggie Bush number
[19:07] Speaker 4: one with the draft pick.
[19:08] Speaker 3: Right.
[19:08] Speaker 4: And it was like, I think they took Mario Williams
[19:10] Speaker 4: that year instead, but I was like, man, look, the
[19:12] Speaker 4: thing that the Texans should do is not worry about
[19:14] Speaker 4: no damn Reggie Bush, try to tank again next year
[19:17] Speaker 4: and get Adrian Peterson, who I thought was the running
[19:19] Speaker 4: back that they should take early in the draft.
[19:20] Speaker 3: But yeah, I thought Reggie Bush, again, electric. I kind of.
[19:23] Speaker 4: Compared him to like, it's not even fair to compare
[19:26] Speaker 4: him to Eric Metcalf because Eric Metcalf wasn't what Reggie
[19:28] Speaker 4: Bush was, but it was like that same kind of
[19:30] Speaker 4: like jitterbug style.
[19:32] Speaker 3: And I was like, that stuff has a limit in
[19:33] Speaker 3: the NFL.
[19:34] Speaker 1: But the thing about Reggie though is that, so- He
[19:38] Speaker 1: was not a jitterbug to me, right? He was a
[19:41] Speaker 1: wide receiver playing running back. right so like Eric Metcalf
[19:46] Speaker 1: was smaller right like I think if it was being
[19:48] Speaker 1: more shifty I put Percy Harvin a bit more in
[19:51] Speaker 1: that category Tavon Austin Tavon Austin you know is another
[19:55] Speaker 1: guy that we've Dexter McCluster like there's a there's a
[19:58] Speaker 1: whole bunch of those guys that you've just put all
[20:00] Speaker 1: over the place like I think that Reggie Bush and
[20:02] Speaker 1: Percy Harvin a bunch of those guys would be much
[20:04] Speaker 1: better now now that there's a different kind of creativity
[20:07] Speaker 1: like can you imagine somebody using Percy Harvin liked to
[20:10] Speaker 1: use Deebo Samuel.
[20:11] Speaker 2: Percy Harvin was a really good NFL player.
[20:13] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. But the league had not quite caught up
[20:15] Speaker 1: to what made them so dangerous.
[20:17] Speaker 3: Right. Put them in space, that kind of stuff.
[20:19] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
[20:19] Speaker 5: Right.
[20:20] Speaker 2: Reggie Bush had, like, a wide receiver build. And then, like,
[20:24] Speaker 2: when you split him out wide, what made him so
[20:26] Speaker 2: scary was that he really did look like a wide receiver.
[20:29] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[20:30] Speaker 2: You know, when he was doing it. But there... They
[20:34] Speaker 2: ain't really been one of those since that one, man.
[20:36] Speaker 2: That one right there, the Fresno State game, that was
[20:40] Speaker 2: so wild because, I don't know, did you watch that
[20:42] Speaker 2: game live?
[20:43] Speaker 3: Oh, hell yeah. I remember watching it that night. Absolutely.
[20:45] Speaker 1: And so what was so wild about it was if
[20:46] Speaker 1: you were on the East Coast, this game was like
[20:48] Speaker 1: a 7 o'clock Pacific kick. And this was back where
[20:51] Speaker 1: college football was what I really wrote about. So I
[20:53] Speaker 1: would just be up all night on Saturdays. And you
[20:56] Speaker 1: had to flip to one of the Fox, the regional
[20:58] Speaker 1: Fox Sports's to get it. Now, never mind the fact
[21:01] Speaker 1: that a side of things to come was that USC
[21:04] Speaker 1: had to play so hard in order to beat Fresno State.
[21:06] Speaker 4: Oh, they needed every bit of Reggie Bush's amazing night
[21:09] Speaker 4: that night to pull them off. They gave up 42
[21:11] Speaker 4: points to Fresno State in that game. And this is
[21:14] Speaker 4: David Carr. This isn't David Carr, Fresno State.
[21:16] Speaker 5: Right.
[21:17] Speaker 1: But see, and that was the thing that had happened
[21:18] Speaker 1: with USC is that they had gotten so big. But
[21:21] Speaker 1: what made them so good in 04 was the Pete
[21:23] Speaker 1: Carroll of it all, which was they were playing defense.
[21:26] Speaker 2: Right.
[21:26] Speaker 1: Right.
[21:27] Speaker 2: That 05 defense was really young.
[21:28] Speaker 1: It is the beginning of the 08 defense, which might
[21:31] Speaker 1: be the best college football defense that I have ever seen.
[21:33] Speaker 2: But the magnitude of what USC was was so giant.
[21:39] Speaker 1: Through that whole year that the whole story was, can
[21:43] Speaker 1: they three-peat, can they three-peat? And if you have watched
[21:44] Speaker 1: the 30 for 30 audit that was clearly produced by
[21:47] Speaker 1: USC guys, and they just act like Texas was like
[21:51] Speaker 1: some 3A team from across the state that they heard
[21:55] Speaker 1: about had this one really good dude on it.
[21:58] Speaker 2: Right.
[21:59] Speaker 1: Except I mentioned it leading up to this and talking
[22:03] Speaker 1: about the fact that Texas– And O2 had a recruiting
[22:07] Speaker 1: class that had like six five-star dudes.
[22:09] Speaker 2: They didn't all make it to the yard, but that's
[22:10] Speaker 2: not the point.
[22:11] Speaker 1: They brought in a bunch of dudes and had consistently
[22:14] Speaker 1: been bringing in a bunch of dudes that hadn't even
[22:17] Speaker 1: won a conference championship. But the year before, they only
[22:20] Speaker 1: lost one game. They won the Rose Bowl in Vince
[22:24] Speaker 1: Young Rose Bowl number one. That is the first of
[22:26] Speaker 1: the legendary Vince Young games.
[22:27] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[22:28] Speaker 2: Was that one.
[22:29] Speaker 1: They brought not everybody back the next year, right? Like
[22:31] Speaker 1: they didn't bring back Cedric Benson. They didn't bring back
[22:33] Speaker 1: Derrick Johnson. But- Texas had a roster where I want
[22:38] Speaker 1: to say four of the five offensive linemen went to
[22:40] Speaker 1: the league. Tight end goes to the league. Jamal Charles
[22:44] Speaker 1: is third string running back. The fourth string running back
[22:48] Speaker 1: was Henry Melton who turned into a pro.
[22:49] Speaker 2: Bowl defensive lineman.
[22:51] Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
[22:51] Speaker 1: And he was, by the way, 270 pounds playing running
[22:54] Speaker 1: back and had double digit touchdowns.
[22:57] Speaker 2: In the course of that season.
[22:57] Speaker 1: They also had a dude named Ramaz Taylor that nobody
[23:00] Speaker 1: remembers because he knuckleheaded his way off.
[23:03] Speaker 2: The yard, but he was a beast.
[23:05] Speaker 3: Fast.
[23:06] Speaker 2: He was fast.
[23:07] Speaker 1: He had like 15 touchdowns that year in total.
[23:10] Speaker 2: They were loaded.
[23:11] Speaker 1: Then on defense, three of the four starting defensive linemen
[23:14] Speaker 1: were NFL guys. The linebacker, of course, went hitting on nothing,
[23:19] Speaker 1: but Aaron Ross, who wound up to have a very
[23:21] Speaker 1: good NFL career and was the Thorpe Award winner in 2006,
[23:25] Speaker 1: was the nickelback Yep.
[23:26] Speaker 2: In 2005. Right.
[23:27] Speaker 3: They had the Griffin boys. They had Huff.
[23:32] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[23:32] Speaker 2: Terrell Brown.
[23:33] Speaker 3: Terrell Brown. Yeah, man, I forgot about Terrell Brown, man.
[23:35] Speaker 3: He was so cold. Yeah, man.
[23:37] Speaker 4: They had kind of everything that they needed, man. Was
[23:41] Speaker 4: Rod Wright on that team?
[23:43] Speaker 2: Rod Wright was on that team, yeah.
[23:44] Speaker 3: Rod Wright was on that team.
[23:45] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
[23:46] Speaker 3: Frank O'Kam.
[23:47] Speaker 1: It's literally one of the greatest college football teams of
[23:50] Speaker 1: all time.
[23:50] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[23:51] Speaker 1: Like, they went through that season. The only games they
[23:55] Speaker 1: played that were within single digits were the game at
[23:58] Speaker 1: Ohio State and the Rose Bowl.
[24:00] Speaker 3: That's right.
[24:01] Speaker 2: Every other game, they blew everything.
[24:02] Speaker 1: They won the Big 12 Championship 70-3, and they stopped
[24:06] Speaker 1: trying after the third quarter.
[24:08] Speaker 4: Man, somebody got to ask Joel Klatt about that day.
[24:11] Speaker 4: I don't remember seeing Joel Klatt talk about what happened
[24:14] Speaker 4: that day. But, I mean, yeah, man, they looked like–
[24:17] Speaker 4: I mean, they– I mean, they're clearly the best Texas
[24:20] Speaker 4: team of all time, right?
[24:21] Speaker 2: Yes.
[24:21] Speaker 4: But it was just sort of unreal because if you
[24:25] Speaker 4: had grown up in Texas and Texas was always letting
[24:28] Speaker 4: people down in the big game and it was like,
[24:29] Speaker 4: they got a little bit of talent, but they would
[24:31] Speaker 4: never show out like that.
[24:33] Speaker 3: They were never that kind of dominant. And so for
[24:35] Speaker 3: them to.
[24:36] Speaker 4: Be as good as they were at that time, it
[24:38] Speaker 4: was almost sort of surreal.
[24:39] Speaker 3: It's like, this can't be the Texas Longhorns. I've been
[24:42] Speaker 3: following my whole life.
[24:43] Speaker 1: Well, there's the other level too, which is the historical
[24:47] Speaker 1: importance of Mack Brown. In the history of Texas football
[24:51] Speaker 1: is he finally was able, I would say, to fully.
[24:55] Speaker 2: Integrate the program.
[24:57] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[24:57] Speaker 2: Right. Like nobody.
[24:59] Speaker 1: The SWC was a race of teams to be the
[25:01] Speaker 1: last one to integrate. They all knew that they had
[25:04] Speaker 1: to do it. And they all wanted to be the
[25:06] Speaker 1: last one. And no school has ever been quite as
[25:09] Speaker 1: good on top to bottom as coming up with new
[25:12] Speaker 1: ways to keep black people out. Figuring out ways to
[25:15] Speaker 1: toss us out after we get there.
[25:18] Speaker 4: I mean, again, University of Texas came up with the
[25:20] Speaker 4: idea of standardized testing.
[25:22] Speaker 1: They opened the law school at Texas Southern so that
[25:25] Speaker 1: they wouldn't have to let no black people into the
[25:27] Speaker 1: law school at Texas.
[25:29] Speaker 2: Like this is, they were dedicated to this fact.
[25:32] Speaker 1: Now, because nobody likes John McAfee, he doesn't get enough
[25:35] Speaker 1: credit for this, but he also helped to begin this.
[25:38] Speaker 1: But the difference was McAfee had to overcome it.
[25:40] Speaker 2: Right. Mac, it feels like was.
[25:42] Speaker 1: The first guy to actually overcome the idea that like,
[25:47] Speaker 1: you don't really want to go to that racist-ass school, man.
[25:50] Speaker 2: I mean, the idea that Texas A & M had
[25:52] Speaker 2: overcome it.
[25:55] Speaker 1: The reason is very simple. Texas A & M didn't
[25:57] Speaker 1: have the luxury that Texas felt like they had about this.
[25:59] Speaker 1: So A & M had to do stuff like hire
[26:01] Speaker 1: Jackie Sherrill.
[26:02] Speaker 3: I was going to say, the Jackie Sherrill of it
[26:04] Speaker 3: all is what really brought it home.
[26:06] Speaker 2: Yes, but the fact that they were willing to do it.
[26:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
[26:09] Speaker 2: Look, those guys in that town were coming in being like, look,
[26:12] Speaker 2: if you're going to hire me, this is going to happen, right? Like,
[26:15] Speaker 2: like if you're not, if you're not with this, then,
[26:18] Speaker 2: you know, we're not.
[26:19] Speaker 1: Going to do this, but they had finally overcome a
[26:22] Speaker 1: bunch of that. Now, Mac, not a great coach, right? Like,
[26:25] Speaker 1: you know, after the whistle blows, not a great coach.
[26:27] Speaker 1: We all understand this, but they had dudes. And I
[26:33] Speaker 1: mentioned that because after, you know, coming up after the break,
[26:37] Speaker 1: we're going to get to what this episode is really
[26:39] Speaker 1: about because we have to give you all the background.
[26:42] Speaker 1: We have given you everything, except talking about the dude
[26:46] Speaker 1: that matters the most. And that is the man who
[26:49] Speaker 1: put up, quite possibly, the greatest performance in the history
[26:51] Speaker 1: of college football at that Rose Bowl. But do you
[26:55] Speaker 1: really understand the importance of Vince Young going into it?
[26:58] Speaker 1: This is where those of us from Houston will try

[28:29] Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Joel Anderson talking about the, well,
[28:33] Speaker 1: it's the Vince Young game. And now we can go
[28:34] Speaker 1: ahead and start calling it what it is at this point,
[28:37] Speaker 1: which is the Vince Young game, which was this close
[28:39] Speaker 1: to being the Lindell White game.
[28:40] Speaker 2: But we'll talk about that in a second.
[28:42] Speaker 1: Now, the significance of Vince Young in this game or
[28:45] Speaker 1: the mere fact that he is even there. Okay, I
[28:48] Speaker 1: will go chronologically because Joel Anderson went to the Astrodome
[28:52] Speaker 1: one day and saw Vince Young and Courtney Lewis playing
[28:54] Speaker 1: for Madison.
[28:55] Speaker 2: And I will let you just go from there.
[28:57] Speaker 4: Yeah, so anyway, at this time, I was working in
[29:00] Speaker 4: Dallas as the Associated Press's high school football writer. So
[29:03] Speaker 4: I covered football all across the state. But I just didn't,
[29:06] Speaker 4: you know, I didn't get a chance to go watch games.
[29:08] Speaker 4: I had to just take games in across the state
[29:10] Speaker 4: and put together sort of a digest. So anyway, my pops,
[29:13] Speaker 4: he was like going, he's the kind of guy that
[29:15] Speaker 4: goes to high school football games.
[29:18] Speaker 2: We do that. We do that.
[29:19] Speaker 4: Yeah, and I would be that guy too. And especially
[29:22] Speaker 4: I will when I get the time again. But my
[29:24] Speaker 4: pops would go and he's like, hey, man, you got
[29:26] Speaker 4: to come down here and see this boy for Madison.
[29:28] Speaker 3: He's unreal. And like, let me explain.
[29:32] Speaker 4: So Houston Madison is always, at the time, they always
[29:36] Speaker 4: had like a really solid football program, but never like a,
[29:39] Speaker 4: state title competitive program. But they beat on that run.
[29:43] Speaker 4: I think they beat North Shore. I think they beat Katy.
[29:46] Speaker 4: And they beat a couple of other schools.
[29:47] Speaker 2: North Shore, really big black people's school, Katy. At that time,
[29:51] Speaker 2: really big white people's school. Andy Dalton came from Katy. Right, yeah.
[29:54] Speaker 3: And so they beat him. I was like, well, he
[29:56] Speaker 3: must be the real deal.
[29:57] Speaker 4: And I'm covering high school football, but still don't have
[30:01] Speaker 4: really a sense for how good Vince Young is. So
[30:03] Speaker 4: we go to the Astrodome and we see them play
[30:05] Speaker 4: in the 5A state semifinal against Austin Westlake. Austin Westlake
[30:10] Speaker 4: is Drew Brees' alma mater. And I'm trying to, I
[30:12] Speaker 4: can't remember the name of the quarterback, but they had
[30:14] Speaker 4: some guy, Chad Schrader, I think. was with a quarterback
[30:16] Speaker 4: that year and he went to college. So anyway, we
[30:18] Speaker 4: go there, the Astrodome, the lower bowl was filled, you know,
[30:21] Speaker 4: brothers on this side, Austin Westlake on that side.
[30:26] Speaker 2: Drew Brees went to Austin Westlake, by the way.
[30:29] Speaker 1: And if you need some help, if you are from
[30:33] Speaker 1: Atlanta and you are familiar with Atlanta Westlake.
[30:36] Speaker 2: It's the exact opposite.
[30:38] Speaker 3: It's not the same thing.
[30:39] Speaker 2: And if you need me to help you with a
[30:41] Speaker 2: little bit more of that, the two people that went
[30:43] Speaker 2: to Atlanta Westlake that I could tell you guys about
[30:45] Speaker 2: that'll help paint the picture for you are Cam Newton
[30:47] Speaker 2: and Pac-Man Jones.
[30:48] Speaker 3: Pac-Man Jones, yeah, man.
[30:49] Speaker 2: Drew Brees went to Austin Westlake.
[30:51] Speaker 3: Not quite the same Westlake. Yeah, not quite it.
[30:54] Speaker 4: Well, Austin Westlake, they call Austin Westlake Austin, but it's
[30:57] Speaker 4: not even in Austin ISD.
[30:58] Speaker 2: It's kind of like Highland Park, right?
[31:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's got its own little school district off the.
[31:02] Speaker 2: Because nobody segregates. Like Texas.
[31:06] Speaker 3: Texas can do it. They can figure it out another way, man.
[31:09] Speaker 4: And look, man, Madison was a pretty good football team,
[31:14] Speaker 4: but if Vince Young could have played 10 more snaps
[31:20] Speaker 4: on defense, they'd win that game. But I had never
[31:24] Speaker 4: seen anything like this. Vince Young is like, they could
[31:26] Speaker 4: not tackle the boy.
[31:28] Speaker 3: He's moving his way.
[31:28] Speaker 4: And it's not like he's running away from people. He's
[31:31] Speaker 4: just finessing his way down the field, just like he had.
[31:35] Speaker 4: I mean, he was just so smooth. He was throwing
[31:38] Speaker 4: bombs on a dime. Like it was unreal. I had
[31:40] Speaker 4: never seen a high school quarterback look like this. And
[31:43] Speaker 4: the crowd was just with him, man. Like the South
[31:45] Speaker 4: side of Houston was with this boy. Like we all
[31:48] Speaker 4: like on this, like I didn't root for Madison, but
[31:51] Speaker 4: I'm like, bro, like how can you not get behind
[31:53] Speaker 4: Vince Young? This dude is amazing. And so they lost
[31:56] Speaker 4: that game. mostly because, again, he couldn't play a few
[32:00] Speaker 4: more plays. But they lost by, like, one score in
[32:02] Speaker 4: this game. And when Madison walked off the field that day,
[32:06] Speaker 4: our side of the stadium stood up and gave them
[32:08] Speaker 4: a standing ovation, man. Because it was that, like, that
[32:10] Speaker 4: was how good Vince was that game. And so after that,
[32:14] Speaker 4: I'm like, well, he's going to Miami. Like, that was, like,
[32:17] Speaker 4: the school that he was supposed to be going to. Like,
[32:19] Speaker 4: Miami was the school that was in the lead for him. And, like,
[32:21] Speaker 4: it makes sense. And then all of a sudden, they
[32:23] Speaker 4: say he's going to Texas. And you tell me, bro,
[32:26] Speaker 4: I'm like, Texas? That don't sound like the place that
[32:29] Speaker 4: Vince Young go to school. The south side of Houston
[32:31] Speaker 4: did not go to no University of Texas at that time.
[32:35] Speaker 2: Keep this in mind. He's the third black quarterback that
[32:41] Speaker 2: Texas ever had.
[32:42] Speaker 3: It's sad that we can name this.
[32:44] Speaker 2: What's my man's name? Number one, Donnie Little.
[32:46] Speaker 3: Donnie Little. I'm related to him through marriage, believe it
[32:49] Speaker 3: or not.
[32:50] Speaker 2: Did not know that.
[32:52] Speaker 3: James Brown.
[32:53] Speaker 2: James Brown. The great James Brown.
[32:56] Speaker 3: The great James Brown.
[32:57] Speaker 4: And look, man, when they wrote about James Brown in
[32:59] Speaker 4: the 90s, you should go look at some of the
[33:01] Speaker 4: Sports Illustrated stories about what people told him about going
[33:04] Speaker 4: to school there and what it meant for James Brown
[33:06] Speaker 4: to be the quarterback at University of Texas then.
[33:08] Speaker 3: Because it's like 1997.
[33:10] Speaker 2: 94 was when he went.
[33:11] Speaker 3: Yeah, 94 is when he went. And then I think
[33:13] Speaker 3: he played through 98, 97? 94 through 97. And then
[33:15] Speaker 3: Major got the.
[33:15] Speaker 2: Job in 98.
[33:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, and it was just like the way they talked,
[33:21] Speaker 4: like he was a real, live, legit pioneer, bro.
[33:24] Speaker 3: Like it was, yeah, like the way they talked.
[33:27] Speaker 4: About him is like the people that entered through desegregation
[33:32] Speaker 4: or whatever. Like it was like that, it was that
[33:33] Speaker 4: big a deal for James Brown to be there. So
[33:35] Speaker 4: for Vince Young to want to go there and follow
[33:37] Speaker 4: that sort of legacy, it was kind of like, what
[33:40] Speaker 4: you on, man?
[33:42] Speaker 3: How much did they give you? Why are you going there?
[33:44] Speaker 2: And look, Jonathan, it was a bumpy road, right?
[33:47] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[33:47] Speaker 2: Because look, they redshirted him the first year, which based
[33:51] Speaker 2: on what we saw the next two years was an
[33:53] Speaker 2: absolute necessary to be made.
[33:56] Speaker 4: Right.
[33:56] Speaker 2: Like he. But there was something about him.
[33:58] Speaker 1: And I think you pointed it out because he got
[34:00] Speaker 1: the job in the middle of his freshman year.
[34:02] Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
[34:03] Speaker 2: And.
[34:05] Speaker 1: He didn't ever feel like he was running by guys,
[34:07] Speaker 1: but it felt like nobody could catch him.
[34:08] Speaker 2: Right. This was not watching Michael Vick. No. Right. This is,
[34:12] Speaker 2: this is not even Tommy Frazier in that way, but
[34:15] Speaker 2: he was a giant. There was that part.
[34:16] Speaker 1: He got this funny little shot put motion. Like none
[34:19] Speaker 1: of it seemed to make sense, but you couldn't do
[34:22] Speaker 1: nothing with them, but teams could do just enough. And
[34:26] Speaker 1: so there were some big wins. Like they won a
[34:29] Speaker 1: game at Nebraska in oh three. That was a big one.
[34:32] Speaker 1: There was some ups and downs off the bench. 0-4,
[34:35] Speaker 1: middle of 0-4, they lose to Oklahoma 12-0. And that
[34:37] Speaker 1: 12 may as well have been 75. They were never
[34:44] Speaker 1: in the game. Adrian Peterson ran for 214 of the
[34:46] Speaker 1: most excruciating yards.
[34:48] Speaker 3: All in between the 20s.
[34:49] Speaker 2: All between the 20s.
[34:50] Speaker 3: All between the 20s.
[34:51] Speaker 2: But there was nothing anybody could do, and Vince was bad.
[34:54] Speaker 1: And the thought was that Mack and Greg Davis were
[34:58] Speaker 1: trying too hard to shoehorn Vince into an offense that
[35:00] Speaker 1: did not fit. And so, legendarily, he comes and says
[35:03] Speaker 1: after that, you got to just let me be me.
[35:05] Speaker 1: And Everything changed, including the game where they were down
[35:08] Speaker 1: at home. I want to say thirty five to seven
[35:11] Speaker 1: to Oklahoma State. And then they came back and won
[35:13] Speaker 1: that game by like three touchdowns or something like that.
[35:16] Speaker 3: They almost lost to Kansas the next day.
[35:17] Speaker 2: They almost lost to Kansas. And they won only because
[35:22] Speaker 2: of the most the worst pass interference call that I
[35:26] Speaker 2: have ever seen.
[35:27] Speaker 1: And when Mark Mangini came, Mark Mangino comes in the
[35:30] Speaker 1: press conference. and basically accuses the big 12 of fixing
[35:33] Speaker 1: the game no one could make a compelling argument that he.
[35:36] Speaker 3: Was wrong yeah it was kind of like all right
[35:38] Speaker 3: they got that one though.
[35:39] Speaker 1: Yeah it was so bad it was so bad it
[35:41] Speaker 1: was so bad but that led to vince dominating michigan
[35:44] Speaker 1: where he had like 199 yards and four touchdowns rushing
[35:47] Speaker 1: right right dominant performance in that game and then comes
[35:51] Speaker 1: next year where the game against ohio state where A.J.
[35:55] Speaker 1: Hawk in that same game, I want to say, had
[35:56] Speaker 1: 10 tackles, a sack, and an interception. It was really
[35:59] Speaker 1: like a game between those two when they were on
[36:02] Speaker 1: the field. Ohio State would have won the game, except
[36:04] Speaker 1: Jim Trestle was trying to prove a point to Troy
[36:05] Speaker 1: Smith and did not play him nearly enough at that expense,
[36:09] Speaker 1: whatever it was, though. From there, Texas walked, marched through
[36:13] Speaker 1: the whole year. Vince's second place in the Heisman, very
[36:17] Speaker 1: offended that Reggie Bush won the Heisman. Everybody in the
[36:19] Speaker 1: building knew that Reggie Bush was going to win that Heisman, apparently,
[36:22] Speaker 1: except for Vince Young.
[36:23] Speaker 4: It's funny because you know what it reminded me of?
[36:25] Speaker 4: It reminded me, because I don't think that Vince would
[36:28] Speaker 4: have done what Diego Pavia did, but it was one
[36:31] Speaker 4: of the few times that I could remember the runner
[36:33] Speaker 4: up being like, damn, that's my trophy.
[36:36] Speaker 3: Yes.
[36:37] Speaker 4: Like usually it's just kind of like you kind of
[36:39] Speaker 4: accept and you understand that, especially Reggie Bush.
[36:42] Speaker 3: Like Reggie Bush was the most famous.
[36:44] Speaker 1: Except we have walked through our entire schedule. Right.
[36:50] Speaker 2: And if you want to be honest- Look who I'm
[36:52] Speaker 2: throwing to. Yeah, man. Like, my best receiver is my
[36:56] Speaker 2: tight end, right? Dave Thomas?
[36:58] Speaker 1: David Thomas was the tight end. Lyman Swede was the
[37:00] Speaker 1: number two receiver. Don't ask Steelers fans about that one, right?
[37:03] Speaker 2: Oh, man. That was not it.
[37:05] Speaker 1: I think Lyman Swede got a lot for looking like
[37:08] Speaker 1: Leroy Williams while wearing the number four.
[37:10] Speaker 3: Fair point.
[37:11] Speaker 2: And play a wide receiver for Texas. He just looked
[37:14] Speaker 2: like Roy Williams.
[37:15] Speaker 1: He did.
[37:15] Speaker 2: Some people just acted like he was Roy Williams.
[37:18] Speaker 3: Very physically impressive.
[37:19] Speaker 2: But he looked exactly like Roy Williams in the uniform.
[37:22] Speaker 2: They had the same face mask and shield. They wore
[37:25] Speaker 2: the same number. They had the same build. It was
[37:27] Speaker 2: the whole nine. Yeah, man. That was as close as
[37:30] Speaker 2: it got.
[37:31] Speaker 3: And Kwon Cosby was, I guess, maybe that tall. And
[37:34] Speaker 3: he was like, I mean, 5'9. He was 25.
[37:37] Speaker 2: Yeah, he was 25.
[37:38] Speaker 4: He had played baseball, came back. He was a great athlete,
[37:40] Speaker 4: really good athlete. But, like, that's not the number one
[37:44] Speaker 4: receiver for a college champion.
[37:46] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[37:46] Speaker 1: No, no, no, no.
[37:47] Speaker 2: It wasn't.
[37:48] Speaker 1: But then this game comes, and the Heisman Trophy thing
[37:52] Speaker 1: certainly had to be a part of it, right? The
[37:54] Speaker 1: other part of it was, I think, Texas was just
[37:57] Speaker 1: a little bit more talented.
[37:59] Speaker 2: Definitely not better coached.
[38:00] Speaker 5: Right.
[38:01] Speaker 2: No.
[38:01] Speaker 1: Gene Chizik on the defense. Greg Davis on the offense.
[38:04] Speaker 1: Mack Brown with the final call on everything.
[38:07] Speaker 4: Bro, I mean, have you looked at the coaching staff
[38:10] Speaker 4: for that USC team? Like Ed Orgeron is on that team.
[38:13] Speaker 2: Ed Orgeron, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkeesian.
[38:16] Speaker 3: Yeah. Like, I mean, they had some dudes on that staff, man.
[38:19] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[38:20] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[38:21] Speaker 2: No, no, no. Norm Chow. Norm Chow.
[38:23] Speaker 1: No, no.
[38:23] Speaker 2: Norm Chow was not there that year.
[38:25] Speaker 3: Oh, that's right. That's right. He had gone to the Titans.
[38:27] Speaker 2: No, no, no. You're right. He was there that year.
[38:30] Speaker 2: And then he went to the Titans thinking that he
[38:32] Speaker 2: was going to get to coach Matt Leinart. Instead, he
[38:36] Speaker 2: had to coach Vince.
[38:37] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. That's not, that wasn't his bag. That's not
[38:39] Speaker 3: who he wanted. No, no, no, no, no.
[38:41] Speaker 2: That was, that was a, that was a tough go, man.
[38:45] Speaker 2: Like to be, I don't really want to get into
[38:47] Speaker 2: some of the things, some of the assumptions that I've
[38:49] Speaker 2: made about what made it so difficult. But it was
[38:54] Speaker 2: a tough go, man.
[38:55] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, look, man.
[38:58] Speaker 2: No, no, by the way, no. Norm was gone by then.
[39:03] Speaker 2: Lane was the offensive coordinator.
[39:05] Speaker 3: Man, that's okay. That's right. I'm looking at it right here.
[39:07] Speaker 3: They had Ken Norton Jr. on that staff. Man, Ken
[39:09] Speaker 3: Norton Jr. has been running.
[39:10] Speaker 4: He's just been basically having the same jobs for the
[39:14] Speaker 4: last 20 years.
[39:14] Speaker 2: That is correct.
[39:16] Speaker 3: But yeah, man. So they had, I mean, Elk.
[39:19] Speaker 4: USC had a decisive coaching advantage. They had a great offense.
[39:23] Speaker 4: But again, the thing that nobody ever paid attention to
[39:26] Speaker 4: going back to it is like in that Fresno State game, man,
[39:28] Speaker 4: a Fresno State team. that did not have like any
[39:31] Speaker 4: stars like this is not you know even Trent Dilfer
[39:34] Speaker 4: of Fresno State Like they.
[39:36] Speaker 3: Just put up numbers on them.
[39:37] Speaker 4: And so people kind of overlooked like, oh, like you can,
[39:39] Speaker 4: they can be had on defense.
[39:41] Speaker 2: You could do that.
[39:41] Speaker 1: But see, to me, it was obvious in part because
[39:44] Speaker 1: I think we overestimated how good that Notre Dame team was.
[39:47] Speaker 1: But the fact that Notre Dame had them until they
[39:49] Speaker 1: had to cheat to win that game at the end
[39:51] Speaker 1: with the Bush push, that was another game, the magnitude
[39:54] Speaker 1: of which I don't know if a college football game
[39:56] Speaker 1: can quite replicate in this day and age. Cause Notre
[40:00] Speaker 1: Dame was just getting back. Charlie Weiss made so much
[40:02] Speaker 1: money off of losing that game.
[40:04] Speaker 3: Oh, man, it really did. That game flowed.
[40:06] Speaker 4: I mean, look, man, do you think his son will
[40:09] Speaker 4: be an offensive coordinator for Ole Miss?
[40:12] Speaker 1: Oh, man, they let all kinds of coaches' sons navigate
[40:16] Speaker 1: through all kinds of things.
[40:17] Speaker 2: You know what I mean? But I get your point, though.
[40:19] Speaker 2: I want to be clear about that.
[40:21] Speaker 1: I don't want you to think that I'm out here
[40:23] Speaker 1: being difficult. But the game starts, and Lindale White, who had, what,
[40:28] Speaker 1: like 180-something yards and two touchdowns?
[40:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, he bullied them.
[40:32] Speaker 1: No, it was 124 yards and three touchdowns. That's what
[40:34] Speaker 1: it was on 20 carries. He looked unstoppable in that game.
[40:39] Speaker 1: Put a pin in that point. But Texas ran off
[40:41] Speaker 1: to a lead. Like, they were up 16-7 with two
[40:44] Speaker 1: minutes left in the first half.
[40:46] Speaker 4: Well, you know, the thing that I think that people overlook, too,
[40:50] Speaker 4: is that we talked about how USC's defense wasn't great.
[40:53] Speaker 3: Texas' defense was actually great, man.
[40:55] Speaker 4: It was excellent. They stopped Matt Leiner. So, Texas, it's
[40:59] Speaker 4: funny you said that because they went into halftime with
[41:02] Speaker 4: the lead. But early on in the game, it looked
[41:05] Speaker 4: like USC was, like, they were really close to pulling away.
[41:08] Speaker 3: Like, they were up 7-0.
[41:10] Speaker 4: They're deep in Texas territory, and Texas stops Matt Leinart
[41:14] Speaker 4: on fourth and one, right? Like, that's a big momentum change.
[41:18] Speaker 4: Then USC's up again, 7-3. They're driving. They're going down here,
[41:22] Speaker 4: and Michael Griffin comes from across the field to intercept
[41:25] Speaker 4: Matt Leinart.
[41:26] Speaker 2: All-time great play.
[41:27] Speaker 4: And also, it doesn't, because at first, like, he doesn't
[41:30] Speaker 4: even act like he caught the ball. Like, it's like, oh,
[41:32] Speaker 4: I stepped out of bounds or something. But if you
[41:33] Speaker 4: look at the, they look at the replay, and they're like, oh, shit,
[41:36] Speaker 4: he got that ball. So the defense held up Just
[41:39] Speaker 4: enough to get the offense going, you know?
[41:41] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[41:42] Speaker 2: And by the way, it was the worst game the
[41:43] Speaker 2: defense played all year long. Yeah.
[41:46] Speaker 1: Like, there's no question about that. But second half, USC, okay, right? Like,
[41:52] Speaker 1: this is when it starts. Because, I mean, if you
[41:55] Speaker 1: treated Texas like an underdog, right, which most people did
[41:59] Speaker 1: going into the game, the second half, Lindell White comes out,
[42:02] Speaker 1: they march down the field, score a quick touchdown, another
[42:05] Speaker 1: Lindell's like, oh, okay. Now things are coming back. Now
[42:08] Speaker 1: things are getting back that way.
[42:09] Speaker 2: Nope.
[42:10] Speaker 1: Here comes Vince again. Let me go get a touchdown
[42:14] Speaker 1: right fast on them boys.
[42:15] Speaker 2: Did that. But then you come back around, basically same
[42:19] Speaker 2: thing happened, right?
[42:20] Speaker 1: Like now we're going score for score, possession for possession,
[42:23] Speaker 1: which is basically how it went for the rest of
[42:25] Speaker 1: the game.
[42:26] Speaker 5: Right.
[42:26] Speaker 3: Absolutely.
[42:27] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[42:27] Speaker 4: USC scores, UT scores. I mean, I kind of, I
[42:31] Speaker 4: remember it's like getting deep into the fourth quarter and
[42:34] Speaker 4: then USC goes up like by two scores.
[42:36] Speaker 3: I think they went up like 38. They were 38
[42:37] Speaker 3: to 26.
[42:37] Speaker 2: That's right.
[42:38] Speaker 4: And it's like, we're more than halfway through the fourth
[42:43] Speaker 4: quarter at this point. And so you're like, okay, USC
[42:45] Speaker 4: has got them. They finally pulled ahead. Texas is not
[42:48] Speaker 4: going to be able to run off enough points and
[42:50] Speaker 4: enough time to win that game. And like, uh, they,
[42:54] Speaker 4: nobody told Vince young that, you know what I mean?
[42:56] Speaker 1: Cause I understand this Reggie Bush did not have a
[43:00] Speaker 1: great game, but I want to say he had something
[43:03] Speaker 1: like 160 yards for scrimmage or something like that.
[43:05] Speaker 2: It was something like 80 yards, brushing 80 yards receiving.
[43:07] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[43:08] Speaker 2: Lindale white though.
[43:09] Speaker 1: Like there's, As a football fan, you know how it goes, man.
[43:14] Speaker 1: We can't stop that guy from running the ball is
[43:17] Speaker 1: the worst feeling in the world. So you're up two scores,
[43:20] Speaker 1: and you can't stop that guy from running the ball.
[43:24] Speaker 1: In particular, a running back that runs like Lindell White Rams.
[43:27] Speaker 1: Between the tackles, hard running. Like, he had the dark
[43:30] Speaker 1: shield on.
[43:31] Speaker 2: Like, it was like, hey, man.
[43:32] Speaker 3: Very much the thunder to the lightning.
[43:35] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like, you don't want these
[43:37] Speaker 1: problems with this dude. So you're down two scores. You're
[43:43] Speaker 1: not winning that game. That's how that seems. Except, nope, Vince,
[43:47] Speaker 1: eight plays, 69 yards, two minutes, 39 seconds, marched down
[43:50] Speaker 1: the field, runs for another touchdown, and now USC is
[43:53] Speaker 1: moving down the field again. And, look, we're getting to
[43:57] Speaker 1: about two minutes left in the game, fourth and two. Again,
[44:03] Speaker 1: Lindell White cannot be stopped. Pete did not put Reggie
[44:07] Speaker 1: Bush on the field for that play. I don't think
[44:09] Speaker 1: that's as big a deal as people make it out
[44:10] Speaker 1: to be. Because the thought is, well, you wouldn't have
[44:12] Speaker 1: to worry about Reggie Bush.
[44:13] Speaker 2: No, you didn't. Right?
[44:14] Speaker 1: Like, the ball was going to Lindell White. It was
[44:17] Speaker 1: just going to be if they could move enough furniture.
[44:19] Speaker 1: And Michael Huff was not supposed to come on the play.
[44:23] Speaker 5: Right?
[44:24] Speaker 1: He was not supposed to blitz.
[44:28] Speaker 2: He decided to blitz anyway.
[44:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, man. That's what great players do, man.
[44:31] Speaker 2: Good thing he did.
[44:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, great players do make a point.
[44:33] Speaker 2: Because that was the stop.
[44:34] Speaker 3: You got to follow your instincts.
[44:35] Speaker 4: A great player following their instincts in that sort of
[44:38] Speaker 4: a moment, that's what makes you a great player.
[44:40] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[44:40] Speaker 1: Let me tell you, that was the stop, and I
[44:42] Speaker 1: knew right then and there watching that game.
[44:44] Speaker 2: I was like, yep, national championship is on the way.
[44:47] Speaker 4: Oh, everybody knew because I felt like when Texas just
[44:50] Speaker 4: runs off the field, they're hype, and the camera goes
[44:53] Speaker 4: to Vince Young putting on his helmet, getting ready to
[44:55] Speaker 4: walk up to the field, and I'm like, oh, shit,
[44:57] Speaker 4: here we go.
[44:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's over.
[44:58] Speaker 3: Bo, can you just slow down for a second? You
[45:02] Speaker 3: know I was rooting for Texas in this game?
[45:04] Speaker 2: How could you not?
[45:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a huge.
[45:07] Speaker 4: Joel hates Texas, just to be clear. I hate Texas, man.
[45:12] Speaker 4: There's nothing about the school that I like. I have
[45:14] Speaker 4: friends that went to school there. I've had good times
[45:16] Speaker 4: at the University of Texas campus.
[45:17] Speaker 3: It's all good.
[45:18] Speaker 4: But what they stand for and all that shit, I'm
[45:20] Speaker 4: not into it.
[45:21] Speaker 3: But Vince Young... is such an irresistible figure to me, man.
[45:25] Speaker 4: And so when he comes onto the field and I'm
[45:28] Speaker 4: just like, oh yeah, I already know what's about to happen, bro.
[45:30] Speaker 4: We all know, you know, we all know they set
[45:32] Speaker 4: it up for that brother.
[45:34] Speaker 2: What was it? Was it fourth and, it was fourth
[45:36] Speaker 2: and five.
[45:37] Speaker 3: Fourth and five.
[45:37] Speaker 2: Fourth and five at the nine yard line. And I
[45:40] Speaker 2: was just like, I.
[45:43] Speaker 1: Had no nerves about what was going to happen. I
[45:45] Speaker 1: was like, maybe it'll be a first down. Maybe it'll
[45:48] Speaker 1: be a touchdown. But what it ain't about to be
[45:50] Speaker 1: is a loss.
[45:51] Speaker 3: Man, is that the most.
[45:53] Speaker 4: Like the most confident you've ever felt about a fourth
[45:56] Speaker 4: and five in your life.
[45:57] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So he drops back and he runs or
[46:02] Speaker 2: runs around to the right.
[46:04] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[46:04] Speaker 2: And the second he started running, I was like, well,
[46:06] Speaker 2: what I know is this, whoever is going to be
[46:08] Speaker 2: there to try to stop him is not going to
[46:11] Speaker 2: be capable of taking his horse down.
[46:13] Speaker 1: And we have not said it explicitly. Fitz Young is
[46:16] Speaker 1: like six, five to 40.
[46:18] Speaker 5: Yeah, man.
[46:18] Speaker 3: Big motherfucker, man.
[46:19] Speaker 2: Big, big, big.
[46:21] Speaker 1: Like once it went around to the right, I knew
[46:23] Speaker 1: that wasn't going down, and we can't get you so
[46:25] Speaker 1: close here, but that's what's going on right here.
[46:28] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, man. That is Vince Young. There's one guy
[46:32] Speaker 2: standing up, and there's one guy on his back. Like,
[46:36] Speaker 2: that was it.
[46:37] Speaker 4: I just remember running into that end zone and, like,
[46:40] Speaker 4: everybody coming to him, man.
[46:41] Speaker 3: It was like, damn, bro. He really?
[46:44] Speaker 2: He did that.
[46:45] Speaker 3: He did that.
[46:46] Speaker 2: He didn't carry bums.
[46:48] Speaker 5: No, man.
[46:48] Speaker 1: He carried an incredibly talented roster.
[46:52] Speaker 2: But he did carry them.
[46:55] Speaker 4: See, and that's the thing that is crazy to me because, again,
[46:58] Speaker 4: there's very few players that you feel like their swag
[47:01] Speaker 4: or their confidence really bolsters everybody else. But that's the
[47:06] Speaker 4: thing about Vince Young that I even noticed in high school.
[47:08] Speaker 4: It was just like whenever he came on the field,
[47:10] Speaker 4: and he had very much a lot of reason to believe,
[47:13] Speaker 4: nobody can stop me from doing what I want to do.
[47:15] Speaker 1: Right?
[47:16] Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like I'm going to do
[47:17] Speaker 3: what I want to do.
[47:17] Speaker 2: It ain't happened yet.
[47:18] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[47:18] Speaker 4: Right.
[47:18] Speaker 3: It ain't happened. Nobody has stopped me. So I'm going
[47:20] Speaker 3: to be fine.
[47:21] Speaker 4: And so like, that's, that's the thing that Texas had
[47:23] Speaker 4: not had and really has not ever had since. I mean,
[47:25] Speaker 4: Colt McCoy was a very, a great college quarterback, but
[47:29] Speaker 4: he was not Vince Young. And it was just like, yo,
[47:31] Speaker 4: when you, when, when Vince Young came onto the field,
[47:33] Speaker 4: when Vince Young did his thing, it was just like, oh,
[47:35] Speaker 4: we're going to be okay because Vince got it handled.
[47:37] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[47:38] Speaker 4: All we got to do is do our part. We
[47:39] Speaker 4: got to get the Michael Huffs to make a big play.
[47:42] Speaker 4: We got to get the Cedric Griffins to make a
[47:43] Speaker 4: big play. We got to get Reggie Bush to do
[47:45] Speaker 4: a crazy-ass pitch.
[47:47] Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
[47:47] Speaker 2: Oh, I forgot.
[47:48] Speaker 3: We didn't talk about that. You know what I'm saying?
[47:51] Speaker 2: I always say.
[47:55] Speaker 1: They always say that the Heisman people took that trophy
[47:59] Speaker 1: back from Reggie. No, Reggie threw that bitch on the field.
[48:02] Speaker 1: Reggie threw that down, that wild lateral. I don't know.
[48:06] Speaker 1: Like in this day and age, we would have to
[48:08] Speaker 1: ask sincerely if he was shaving points.
[48:12] Speaker 3: Have you watched that play recently?
[48:13] Speaker 2: I have not.
[48:15] Speaker 3: OK, so I was watching a little bit of the
[48:17] Speaker 3: game the other night.
[48:18] Speaker 4: And my recollection of the play from that time was
[48:22] Speaker 4: that Reggie Bush was sort of in the open field.
[48:25] Speaker 3: One guy got up to him and he kind of
[48:26] Speaker 3: pitched it.
[48:27] Speaker 2: He was in traffic. He was in traffic.
[48:29] Speaker 3: He threw the ball and gave it to somebody. I
[48:32] Speaker 3: was like, dog, what?
[48:33] Speaker 2: What are you doing? There were hands on him when
[48:36] Speaker 2: he did that.
[48:37] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[48:38] Speaker 4: Yeah. I was like, bro, that is, it's the crazy.
[48:40] Speaker 4: Cause he's never done anything crazy like that before in
[48:43] Speaker 4: his career before.
[48:44] Speaker 3: Right. Like I'd never seen him like do that all
[48:46] Speaker 3: of a sudden.
[48:47] Speaker 4: And actually it was the, it was only the second
[48:49] Speaker 4: crazy pitch that happened in that game too.
[48:51] Speaker 3: Cause remember if you, UT's first play came on a
[48:54] Speaker 3: pitch like that from Vince DeSelvin.
[48:56] Speaker 2: Young, you know?
[48:58] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[48:59] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[48:59] Speaker 1: They got that one play in the USC people complained
[49:01] Speaker 1: about where Vince's knee was down and pitched it to Selvin.
[49:04] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[49:05] Speaker 3: I mean, they were.
[49:06] Speaker 2: Hey man.
[49:07] Speaker 3: I mean, that's the game, man.
[49:08] Speaker 2: It's the air time, right?
[49:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
[49:10] Speaker 1: The air time is going to capture some of the
[49:12] Speaker 1: noise in the function. But now this was the first
[49:16] Speaker 1: national championship that Texas had won. It had been so long.
[49:20] Speaker 1: that they had never won a national championship with a
[49:22] Speaker 1: black player.
[49:22] Speaker 3: That's right.
[49:23] Speaker 4: Oh, man.
[49:24] Speaker 1: Yeah. It had literally been that long. The most memorable
[49:30] Speaker 1: postseason event that Texas had had was getting destroyed by
[49:34] Speaker 1: Miami in That was something else we could have done
[49:36] Speaker 1: a Time Machine Tuesday on.
[49:40] Speaker 2: That game is shit.
[49:42] Speaker 1: I might find a way just to do that during
[49:45] Speaker 1: the summer.
[49:46] Speaker 2: Just for the hell of it.
[49:49] Speaker 4: This all goes back to the historical piece of it
[49:51] Speaker 4: because that Miami game, just without getting too deep into it,
[49:55] Speaker 4: it was like Miami had the brothers, man. In Texas,
[49:58] Speaker 4: they had an offensive tackle named Stan Thomas who.
[50:00] Speaker 3: Was talking shit. He called them thugs and all this
[50:02] Speaker 3: other stuff.
[50:03] Speaker 4: It was just like, I don't know why he thought
[50:05] Speaker 4: it was a good idea to get them boys amped
[50:07] Speaker 4: up before the game, but he did it.
[50:09] Speaker 1: Have you read Bruce Feldman's book, Kane Mutiny?
[50:13] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[50:14] Speaker 1: And so the best part of that is the Miami
[50:19] Speaker 1: players were on orders to behave themselves.
[50:22] Speaker 3: Oh, my God, yes.
[50:24] Speaker 1: And Dennis Erickson had told everybody and promised everyone that
[50:29] Speaker 1: they were going to take care of themselves.
[50:32] Speaker 2: And then Michael Irvin.
[50:33] Speaker 1: started calling the dudes at the hotel in the morning
[50:36] Speaker 1: and basically said, man, get the fuck out of here
[50:39] Speaker 1: with that bullshit. And on the opening kickoff, Robert Bailey
[50:44] Speaker 1: ran down the field and knocked the returner unconscious.
[50:47] Speaker 3: Chris Samuels. Knocked Chris Samuels out.
[50:48] Speaker 2: And it all went downhill. Miami won the game 46-3
[50:52] Speaker 2: with over 200 yards.
[50:55] Speaker 4: Of penalties the the funny thing that i read about
[50:57] Speaker 4: that is that the next year you know the ncaa
[51:00] Speaker 4: puts together like a list of infractions the tape right
[51:02] Speaker 4: infractions like you can't do this you can't do this
[51:04] Speaker 4: in a game and like it was basically a miami
[51:07] Speaker 4: hurricanes highlight yes yes it.
[51:08] Speaker 2: Was all it was the cow game yeah it was
[51:11] Speaker 2: that one like they i can look back on it
[51:13] Speaker 2: now as an adult and be like okay you boys
[51:18] Speaker 2: are wild right this was a little much.
[51:24] Speaker 1: But it was texas that was on the business end
[51:25] Speaker 1: of it figuratively as much as they were literally and
[51:29] Speaker 1: now houston's.
[51:31] Speaker 3: Own houston's own south side.
[51:33] Speaker 1: South harold clark's own i remember my uncle had passed
[51:37] Speaker 1: away right around then and so the funeral was a
[51:39] Speaker 1: few days after the rose bowl and my uncle who
[51:42] Speaker 1: lives in another uncle who lives in harold clark uh
[51:45] Speaker 1: was at the house and i was like So y'all
[51:47] Speaker 1: still jamming down there?
[51:48] Speaker 2: He's like, oh, you talking about Vince?
[51:50] Speaker 1: And this is not a man that be rooting for
[51:52] Speaker 1: no university in Houston.
[51:55] Speaker 2: Nah, man. Vince was doing it for a lot of people. Oh, bro.
[51:59] Speaker 4: It really, I mean, man, that guy, I mean, that's
[52:02] Speaker 4: the thing. This is why Texas holds on to him
[52:04] Speaker 4: so tightly.
[52:05] Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Because Vince is, you know, look.
[52:09] Speaker 2: He can make it challenging.
[52:10] Speaker 3: He can make it challenging.
[52:11] Speaker 4: Vince has had, you know, I think things seem to be,
[52:14] Speaker 4: going a little bit better now, but there was a
[52:16] Speaker 4: time when he had to separate himself from the program
[52:18] Speaker 4: and the program separated themselves from him for a moment,
[52:20] Speaker 4: but they welcomed him back. But like, that is how
[52:23] Speaker 4: much Vince means to that program, man. Like he, I mean,
[52:28] Speaker 4: you had a dude like me to root for Texas, man.
[52:31] Speaker 4: You had brothers, like people that would never consider that school,
[52:33] Speaker 4: like never thought that we had any sort of kinship
[52:36] Speaker 4: or any place on that campus. And Vince Young made
[52:39] Speaker 4: us feel like we were part of that fan group
[52:40] Speaker 4: for a little bit, man.
[52:41] Speaker 2: Hey man, that program, has Earl Campbell, Heisman Trophy winner.
[52:48] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[52:49] Speaker 2: Ricky Williams. Yeah, Ricky Williams. Heisman Trophy winner.
[52:54] Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
[52:55] Speaker 2: And they are playing for second.
[52:57] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[52:57] Speaker 2: The most important player in the history of that program.
[53:00] Speaker 1: Man.
[53:01] Speaker 2: Is Vince. Woo! Oh, man.
[53:03] Speaker 3: So, man, you got him over Earl. Man, yeah, I mean,
[53:05] Speaker 3: you were right. You were right, but, man, Earl Campbell, man.
[53:09] Speaker 2: You know what's amazing about Earl Campbell in college footage?
[53:12] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[53:13] Speaker 1: Everybody remembers that play against Rice. And honestly, they should
[53:15] Speaker 1: have never let Earl Campbell play football against Rice. Where
[53:18] Speaker 1: he picks that one dude up and throws him like
[53:20] Speaker 1: five yards, going in for the touchdown. The thing about
[53:24] Speaker 1: Earl Campbell college footage is, Earl Campbell NFL highlights.
[53:28] Speaker 2: Are all him running dead into somebody's chest.
[53:31] Speaker 1: Yes.
[53:32] Speaker 2: He's so fast that in college, those dudes aren't in
[53:36] Speaker 2: the screen.
[53:36] Speaker 3: He's running away from them in college.
[53:38] Speaker 2: He's running away from people. And only had one year,
[53:41] Speaker 2: by the way, as a tailback.
[53:42] Speaker 1: Right. all the other years he was playing fullback right
[53:45] Speaker 1: but Vince I mean Earl didn't win no title.
[53:48] Speaker 3: That's right that's right he didn't win no title that's
[53:51] Speaker 3: right the one thing.
[53:52] Speaker 4: That I would say that would work in Earl's favor
[53:56] Speaker 4: is that it is the Vince years never built into
[53:59] Speaker 4: anything though like nothing oh I disagree nothing came well
[54:03] Speaker 4: I mean what has Texas done since then.
[54:06] Speaker 1: To say that it didn't build into anything ignores that
[54:09] Speaker 1: four years later they were right back in that same
[54:12] Speaker 1: stadium playing for another national championship that if Colt doesn't
[54:15] Speaker 1: get hurt on the second drive of the game.
[54:17] Speaker 3: They still lose.
[54:19] Speaker 2: Here's why I don't agree. It's easy to dismiss it.
[54:23] Speaker 2: Go look at that era of Nick.
[54:25] Speaker 1: Saban Alabama football and go look at the teams that
[54:28] Speaker 1: beat them. And they all had in common the same thing.
[54:32] Speaker 2: A quarterback that could move. A quarterback that could move.
[54:34] Speaker 1: It didn't have to be a quarterback that could run
[54:36] Speaker 1: like Vince, but just somebody that made the defense have
[54:39] Speaker 1: to account for that man.
[54:40] Speaker 2: I mean, they.
[54:41] Speaker 1: Were marching on them through those first two drives of
[54:45] Speaker 1: the game.
[54:45] Speaker 3: But this is the thing.
[54:47] Speaker 4: A quarterback that runs has to get hit by Alabama defense.
[54:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I hear you, but I'm just saying,
[54:52] Speaker 1: if he does not get hurt, the idea that if
[54:54] Speaker 1: Cole doesn't get hurt, they still lose, there's a great
[54:58] Speaker 1: deal of, evidence to indicate that I could not say
[55:01] Speaker 1: that with the confidence that you say it but I
[55:03] Speaker 1: guess my question would be well you say it didn't
[55:06] Speaker 1: build into anything they spent most of the next year
[55:08] Speaker 1: in the top five right and it wasn't until Colt
[55:10] Speaker 1: got hurt again that that started to come apart in
[55:12] Speaker 1: 08 they had a one loss season where they lost
[55:15] Speaker 1: the one game by one point dead at the end
[55:18] Speaker 1: and probably should have played for a national championship I
[55:20] Speaker 1: guess my question would be what was this supposed to
[55:22] Speaker 1: build into.
[55:23] Speaker 4: Yeah I mean I guess the thing is is that
[55:25] Speaker 4: if you would have thought that that would have created
[55:27] Speaker 4: a whole another generation of like you know, recruiting classes and,
[55:31] Speaker 4: you know.
[55:31] Speaker 2: But they kept bringing in dudes. The problem was they
[55:34] Speaker 2: were poorly coached.
[55:35] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[55:36] Speaker 4: I mean, it's like they had Tyrone Swoops. I remember
[55:38] Speaker 4: I went through this. I wrote about Archmanic earlier in
[55:40] Speaker 4: the year. They had, like, the Tyrone Swoopses. They had,
[55:43] Speaker 4: who was that, man?
[55:44] Speaker 3: I mean, they had just a bunch of.
[55:46] Speaker 4: Guys that were, like, highly regarded, but just it didn't
[55:48] Speaker 4: feel like Texas seized on that moment and became, like,
[55:52] Speaker 4: Texas in the way that we thought. Like, I thought
[55:55] Speaker 4: when Vince won that national championship, okay, we're going to
[55:58] Speaker 4: see Texas win another national championship again sometime in the
[56:00] Speaker 4: next 20 years.
[56:01] Speaker 3: But again, they were- They were on the cuffs. They
[56:03] Speaker 3: were on the cuffs.
[56:04] Speaker 2: They were right there.
[56:04] Speaker 1: The problem is you got to get another one of
[56:07] Speaker 1: those and they just don't make those.
[56:10] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[56:11] Speaker 1: Like, like, you know, I mean, the Colt McCoy story
[56:14] Speaker 1: is amazing when you really stop and think about it, right?
[56:16] Speaker 1: This is a West Texas two-way high school player who
[56:22] Speaker 1: became truly one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history
[56:24] Speaker 1: of college football. Yeah.
[56:26] Speaker 3: He could have won a Heisman. You know what I mean?
[56:28] Speaker 2: He's one of the great freshman quarterbacks that there's ever been.
[56:31] Speaker 2: Like it was all there.
[56:32] Speaker 1: So I felt like, I did think they built off
[56:34] Speaker 1: of that. That 06 recruiting class was huge. Like once
[56:37] Speaker 1: he came in, they.
[56:38] Speaker 2: Brought the dudes in and then.
[56:39] Speaker 3: Matt, He lost it, man.
[56:42] Speaker 2: He lost it. There's no other way around it.
[56:44] Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I also was like, I mean, Greg Davis,
[56:47] Speaker 4: I mean, you know what I'm saying? And then, you know,
[56:48] Speaker 4: they lose Will Muschamp. People leave and things change, but
[56:52] Speaker 4: I just felt like at that time, I remember thinking,
[56:56] Speaker 4: I was like, damn, man, we're going to have to
[56:57] Speaker 4: be dealing with Texas for the rest of my life now.
[56:59] Speaker 4: You know, like Texas being great. And then TCU, oh,
[57:03] Speaker 4: I'm not wearing my TCU sweatshirt today.
[57:04] Speaker 3: I'm wearing a 7131. You don't know nothing about that.
[57:07] Speaker 4: But what happened is that I mean, TCU wins 8
[57:12] Speaker 4: of the 12 in the Big 12 era, man.
[57:14] Speaker 3: That's not the Texas that I thought.
[57:16] Speaker 2: No, I mean, that's truly embarrassing for Texas. Yeah, I agree.
[57:21] Speaker 2: There's no way around it. It turned in the way
[57:24] Speaker 2: it did.
[57:25] Speaker 1: Of course, they had three years where a lot of
[57:27] Speaker 1: people around the program were more concerned with getting the
[57:30] Speaker 1: coach fired than they were with actually winning football games.
[57:32] Speaker 3: Charlie Strong, man.
[57:34] Speaker 2: That did happen. Don't get me wrong. He did not
[57:36] Speaker 2: do much to acquit himself, but That did happen.
[57:40] Speaker 4: The thing is, when he got hired, you tell me
[57:43] Speaker 4: if you felt the same way. I was like, this
[57:45] Speaker 4: isn't going to work.
[57:46] Speaker 2: The athletic director went and hired a black dude and
[57:50] Speaker 2: didn't run it by nobody.
[57:52] Speaker 4: Was it Red McCombs who said, I think he would
[57:54] Speaker 4: have made a great defensive coordinator?
[57:58] Speaker 2: Here's the question, though. Was he wrong? He went to
[58:03] Speaker 2: South Florida and looked exactly the same.
[58:05] Speaker 4: The thing is, at that time, I mean, it was.
[58:11] Speaker 1: The sentiment behind it was the sentiment behind it. Coincidentally,
[58:16] Speaker 1: vindication arrived.
[58:21] Speaker 3: That's true.
[58:22] Speaker 4: And Charlie had some other stuff going on, too, kind
[58:25] Speaker 4: of in the background during them years.
[58:27] Speaker 3: Yeah, he did.
[58:29] Speaker 2: But here's what's interesting, though. You're right.
[58:31] Speaker 1: It never turned into anything for Texas, but also USC
[58:35] Speaker 1: was never the same.
[58:36] Speaker 4: Oh, man, look, I remember when you mentioned that 2018,
[58:39] Speaker 4: because I thought that 2018 was great.
[58:41] Speaker 1: I thought Texas and USC should have been back in
[58:44] Speaker 1: a championship game again.
[58:45] Speaker 3: Absolutely. Raymar Malanga, you know, Brian Cushing.
[58:49] Speaker 2: Ray Maluga, I believe is how you say it.
[58:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, was that Maluga?
[58:54] Speaker 5: Yes.
[58:54] Speaker 3: Okay, yeah. See, people that watch Tailgate know I be
[58:57] Speaker 3: mispronouncing names. That's my joint.
[58:59] Speaker 4: But yeah, man, so I, yeah, USC, that's, and that's
[59:02] Speaker 4: kind of the funny thing because again, USC is kind
[59:04] Speaker 4: of like Texas in that way.
[59:05] Speaker 3: It's like, why aren't y'all better? Like you got what
[59:08] Speaker 3: you need. You've got it.
[59:10] Speaker 2: You need.
[59:10] Speaker 1: There was a run last decade where none of the
[59:14] Speaker 1: top 20 football players in California went to USC or UCLA.
[59:19] Speaker 2: I mean, that's... It was inexplicable.
[59:22] Speaker 1: They were just going everywhere else. They never really got
[59:26] Speaker 1: up off the ground after the probation.
[59:27] Speaker 2: Like, I don't... Like, USC.
[59:30] Speaker 1: Right now, there's no reason. What reason is there for
[59:34] Speaker 1: Ohio State necessarily to be better than USC? Except for
[59:37] Speaker 1: the fact that they got money. And that's the problem
[59:39] Speaker 1: they got now is they got a, but USC, part
[59:42] Speaker 1: of why Reggie Bush was so famous, part of why
[59:44] Speaker 1: OJ Simpson was so famous is that USC is a
[59:46] Speaker 1: really big deal to rich, famous people.
[59:48] Speaker 2: Right.
[59:49] Speaker 1: Oh, you know, and so it gets back to like,
[59:51] Speaker 1: I don't like, I remember the first time I saw.
[59:53] Speaker 2: Caleb Williams with his NIL money at USC. I was like,
[59:55] Speaker 2: oh shit, they back.
[59:56] Speaker 1: Cause I mean, who could give you a better visit
[59:58] Speaker 1: than USC can?
[1:00:00] Speaker 3: Absolutely. Like, oh, USC is loud. And the campus itself
[1:00:03] Speaker 3: is beautiful.
[1:00:04] Speaker 4: I mean, you know, you know, if you, if you,
[1:00:06] Speaker 4: if you, if you can get past whatever you think
[1:00:09] Speaker 4: about the surrounding neighborhood, the campus itself is beautiful. So,
[1:00:14] Speaker 4: but it's funny you mentioned that because a couple of
[1:00:17] Speaker 4: years after that national championship, When I was at the
[1:00:19] Speaker 4: Shreveport Times, Shreveport Times had enough money to send me
[1:00:21] Speaker 4: out there to do a profile on John David Booty, okay?
[1:00:25] Speaker 4: John David Booty, one of Shreveport's greatest all-time quarterbacks and
[1:00:28] Speaker 4: also part of the legendary Booty family. And I remember
[1:00:31] Speaker 4: I was talking with John David Booty. I'm sitting on
[1:00:33] Speaker 4: campus and somebody in the background playing a piccolo and
[1:00:36] Speaker 4: it's like 72 degrees. It's gorgeous out there. And I'm
[1:00:39] Speaker 4: just asking him, so like, tell me what it's like
[1:00:42] Speaker 4: being a quarterback at Shreveport, a quarterback at USC. And
[1:00:45] Speaker 4: he told me about how like Ashton Kutcher played And
[1:00:48] Speaker 4: James Conn had invited him up to throw the football around.
[1:00:51] Speaker 3: At their house. Like he was like, yeah, man, why
[1:00:52] Speaker 3: don't you guys come on up and throw the football around?
[1:00:54] Speaker 4: And I was like, damn, like USC guy, you can
[1:00:57] Speaker 4: just do that. You know what I'm saying? They want
[1:00:59] Speaker 4: to hang out with you like that. And at that
[1:01:01] Speaker 4: time consider LA didn't have an NFL team.
[1:01:05] Speaker 3: Right.
[1:01:06] Speaker 4: And so like they had, they had that whole thing
[1:01:08] Speaker 4: on lock. And I was like, what could be better
[1:01:10] Speaker 4: than this? But I think one thing that maybe sort
[1:01:12] Speaker 4: of underrated with the USC thing is that, um, man,
[1:01:16] Speaker 4: there's not as many black people live in California as
[1:01:17] Speaker 4: there used to be.
[1:01:18] Speaker 2: That is true.
[1:01:19] Speaker 3: You know what I mean? There's a lot.
[1:01:20] Speaker 4: I mean, the Bay area is basically gotten cleared out.
[1:01:23] Speaker 4: So like, that's what OJ is for. OJ is from
[1:01:25] Speaker 4: San Francisco, man. The projects, Portero Hill projects. So you,
[1:01:30] Speaker 4: Cali doesn't have the same. A lot of them black
[1:01:33] Speaker 4: folks have moved to Arizona and Las Vegas, more affordable
[1:01:36] Speaker 4: areas have moved completely away.
[1:01:38] Speaker 3: So they don't have that anymore.
[1:01:39] Speaker 4: So I, I got to think that that hurts in
[1:01:42] Speaker 4: terms of like the pool of players that they've got
[1:01:43] Speaker 4: to pick.
[1:01:44] Speaker 3: From, right?
[1:01:44] Speaker 2: No, but you're right though.
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: It never dawned on me that 20 years after that game,
[1:01:47] Speaker 1: neither of those programs would ever come close to those
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: heights again. And it has not happened. But that right
[1:01:53] Speaker 1: there is Joel Anderson. Check him out on the ring
[1:01:56] Speaker 1: of tailgate and let us all congratulate him. I don't
[1:01:59] Speaker 1: know if he passed 100% on this one, but a
[1:02:03] Speaker 1: whole hour, And you didn't even turn into your true
[1:02:06] Speaker 1: hating ass self.
[1:02:08] Speaker 2: And we love that you, we love that you tried.
[1:02:10] Speaker 4: I was going to, I was going to, I was
[1:02:12] Speaker 4: going to, cause I heard your little show yesterday, man.
[1:02:15] Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
[1:02:16] Speaker 4: What you said about me, about being, you know, one
[1:02:18] Speaker 4: of your top haters or whatever.
[1:02:20] Speaker 3: And I don't want to get into it.
[1:02:20] Speaker 2: Not one of my personal top haters.
[1:02:22] Speaker 3: Okay.
[1:02:22] Speaker 1: Like, like, I mean, actually you are, I mean, you
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: hate on me tough, but yes, you are the immediate
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: hater that came to my mind, but continue.
[1:02:29] Speaker 4: I didn't want to get into it because I was
[1:02:31] Speaker 4: going to be like, you know, we could compare like
[1:02:33] Speaker 4: who we hate against and see what the community thinks
[1:02:35] Speaker 4: about it. But I didn't want to do that. I
[1:02:37] Speaker 4: came prepared to address that. But because you want some
[1:02:40] Speaker 4: different stuff today, I was like, OK, we're just going
[1:02:43] Speaker 4: to collab.
[1:02:43] Speaker 3: We're going to be, you know, saying boys, man. So
[1:02:45] Speaker 3: I'm just, you know, I'm going to let it go.
[1:02:46] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:02:47] Speaker 1: Go ahead and go ahead and ask. We'll let the
[1:02:49] Speaker 1: community speak on this. I appreciate you doing you're doing
[1:02:53] Speaker 1: the best you could.
[1:02:55] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I did the best I could.
