[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:10] Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:12] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:16] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:21] Speaker 1: a hater. It is Mina Combs Friday. Mina Combs, what's
[0:25] Speaker 1: going on?
[0:25] Speaker 2: Hello. I'm so excited to see you.
[0:27] Speaker 3: It's been so long and I just found out you're
[0:29] Speaker 3: not going to be in San Francisco, so we're not
[0:31] Speaker 3: going to have our annual.
[0:32] Speaker 2: like 2 a.m. hang out and sit in the Super Bowl.
[0:34] Speaker 4: I know, right?
[0:36] Speaker 1: We normally catch up at like what the wave party
[0:38] Speaker 1: is or something like that. But so the trick back
[0:40] Speaker 1: for me with the Super Bowl is the real value
[0:43] Speaker 1: for me is to go and to go on other
[0:45] Speaker 1: people's shows at Radio Row. But when it's on West
[0:48] Speaker 1: Coast time, Radio Row still run on East Coast time.
[0:52] Speaker 1: And so it's one thing to go out there and
[0:54] Speaker 1: prostitute yourself at regular business hours. It's another thing to
[0:57] Speaker 1: get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to walk
[0:59] Speaker 1: the stroll. And I just don't need the money that bad.
[1:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, the West Coast time zone is going to screw
[1:04] Speaker 2: up a lot of people.
[1:05] Speaker 3: But the benefit of it is someone who lives in L.A.
[1:08] Speaker 3: right now. I'm done with work at like three most days, right?
[1:13] Speaker 3: Because that's when the show's end. And I think people
[1:15] Speaker 3: are going to discover that. Because typically in Super Bowl
[1:18] Speaker 3: week or when it's on the East Coast or whatever,
[1:20] Speaker 3: everybody finishes about six.
[1:22] Speaker 2: You get a little second. And then you go out
[1:24] Speaker 2: to dinner at eight and party or whatever. Everyone's going
[1:27] Speaker 2: to be done at three.
[1:28] Speaker 3: So you got hours to kill in the afternoon and
[1:31] Speaker 3: people are going to figure that out real quick.
[1:33] Speaker 4: Now that part, I think that you are totally fair about.
[1:36] Speaker 1: I will also acknowledge that when it was Las Vegas,
[1:39] Speaker 1: I didn't care about any of these things that we
[1:41] Speaker 1: are talking about.
[1:42] Speaker 4: I was there for that.
[1:44] Speaker 2: The 4 p.m. casino.
[1:46] Speaker 4: Oh, dude, Vegas.
[1:47] Speaker 1: I was just in Vegas this week. Vegas was the
[1:49] Speaker 1: time I got off. I got into casino at three
[1:52] Speaker 1: o'clock and by 530, I had $ 1, 400 that I didn't
[1:54] Speaker 1: have when I walked in.
[1:56] Speaker 2: What is the best and worst time to be in
[2:00] Speaker 2: a casino?
[2:01] Speaker 4: The best and worst time to be what?
[2:02] Speaker 2: In a casino.
[2:04] Speaker 1: Ooh.
[2:05] Speaker 4: Okay.
[2:05] Speaker 1: So are we talking about a casino in Las Vegas
[2:07] Speaker 1: or just a casino generally?
[2:10] Speaker 2: It's a really important distinction. Let's do Las Vegas.
[2:14] Speaker 4: Okay.
[2:15] Speaker 1: Honestly, for me, it all feel like the same time
[2:17] Speaker 1: at the casino in Las Vegas. Like no matter when
[2:20] Speaker 1: it is, the time that makes you feel a little
[2:21] Speaker 1: worse about yourself is when you're sitting at the table
[2:24] Speaker 1: at nine o'clock in the morning.
[2:25] Speaker 3: Right.
[2:27] Speaker 1: But I didn't come here to do nothing else. And
[2:28] Speaker 1: there's not that much else to do at nine o'clock
[2:30] Speaker 1: in the morning in Vegas. I had a day once
[2:32] Speaker 1: where they canceled my flight. And I had to go
[2:36] Speaker 1: from taking a 9 a.m. flight to the red eye.
[2:39] Speaker 1: And the problem with free time in Las Vegas is
[2:41] Speaker 1: there's nothing to do but let them in your vein
[2:45] Speaker 1: like that. That's what there is. Now, luckily, I came
[2:48] Speaker 1: out on top on the back end of that. But
[2:50] Speaker 1: that's it. Nine o'clock in the morning. Everybody, everybody says
[2:53] Speaker 1: they're not judging you. But then you look at who's
[2:55] Speaker 1: sitting next to you and you realize that's bullshit.
[2:59] Speaker 3: Yeah we were when the vegas super bowl when i
[3:01] Speaker 3: would have to get up to do first take or
[3:03] Speaker 3: whatever walking through the casino to the set it was
[3:08] Speaker 3: a tough scene it's a tough scene but that's 7
[3:11] Speaker 3: a.m 7 to 8 a.m because you know at like
[3:14] Speaker 3: 6 a.m you still got the night owls wrapping up
[3:17] Speaker 3: i think that it has to be like breakfast time
[3:19] Speaker 3: where you can actually start judging people but look i
[3:22] Speaker 3: mean i again i'm not a gambler so i don't
[3:24] Speaker 3: really know.
[3:25] Speaker 2: A lot about it but um I would do a
[3:28] Speaker 2: Super Bowl back there in a heartbeat.
[3:30] Speaker 1: Oh, and look, if they have a Super Bowl in
[3:31] Speaker 1: Las Vegas every year, I'll show up in Las Vegas
[3:34] Speaker 1: every year for the Super Bowl. But this is, you
[3:36] Speaker 1: got a special Super Bowl here, Seattle Seahawks fan. You
[3:39] Speaker 1: got your guys facing up against the Los Angeles Rams.
[3:44] Speaker 4: I feel like, I feel like, isn't that kind of
[3:46] Speaker 4: your side piece though, the Rams?
[3:48] Speaker 3: I do the Rams preseason games. I get a lot
[3:50] Speaker 3: of flack from both sides.
[3:54] Speaker 2: Throughout.
[3:55] Speaker 3: There's no real, like, No one's really taken my side
[4:00] Speaker 3: in that relationship, especially I'm an MVP voter too. And
[4:05] Speaker 3: I have been public about the fact that I picked
[4:07] Speaker 3: Drake May. I do a podcast every year where I
[4:09] Speaker 3: explain my thinking and I'll get into it there. But yeah,
[4:12] Speaker 3: I've definitely gotten some angry Rams fans coming at me
[4:15] Speaker 3: about that, especially after doing the preseason.
[4:18] Speaker 1: I feel like even in a road game in that
[4:23] Speaker 1: incredibly loud stadium, especially after Charbonnet tore the ACL. I
[4:28] Speaker 1: feel like, for me, this is a no-excuses game for
[4:30] Speaker 1: the Rams, right?
[4:31] Speaker 4: If all the principles on the.
[4:34] Speaker 1: Rams are whom I have been told all the principles are,
[4:38] Speaker 1: you win this game because that team has Sam.
[4:41] Speaker 4: Darnold on it.
[4:42] Speaker 2: But they also have the best defense in the NFL.
[4:45] Speaker 4: I hear you. All I'm saying is this.
[4:47] Speaker 1: They saying they want to hire the defensive coordinator supposed
[4:50] Speaker 1: to be getting people's.
[4:51] Speaker 4: Jobs, right? All of this stuff. You have got.
[4:55] Speaker 1: That guy right there that we know there are things
[4:57] Speaker 1: that you can do that will rattle his brain every
[5:00] Speaker 1: single time. We are aware of these things. You have
[5:02] Speaker 1: a quarterback that we are putting in the Hall of Fame.
[5:04] Speaker 1: If he wins this one, MVP, at least top two.
[5:07] Speaker 1: We've got that. You have, generally speaking, McDonald, of course,
[5:10] Speaker 1: has done a great job with Seattle. But you've got McVay,
[5:13] Speaker 1: who somehow has turned out to be as advertised when
[5:15] Speaker 1: we started off when he was 31 years old, saying
[5:17] Speaker 1: that he was like an all-time great coach. It's all
[5:20] Speaker 1: set up there for you to go beat a team
[5:23] Speaker 1: that has fewer players that have been at this level
[5:25] Speaker 1: than your team has been.
[5:27] Speaker 2: Well, and you also have a Super Bowl opponent who
[5:29] Speaker 2: you should.
[5:30] Speaker 5: Beat, right?
[5:31] Speaker 2: So this is it.
[5:32] Speaker 3: Not to, you know, sorry, Patriots fans, but I am
[5:36] Speaker 3: of the belief that the NFC championship winner will win
[5:39] Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. It reminds me a little bit actually
[5:41] Speaker 3: of the 2014 when the Seahawks played the Niners in
[5:45] Speaker 3: the NFC Championship, the tip game. And then the Super
[5:47] Speaker 3: Bowl itself, as you remember, was pretty anticlimactic against.
[5:50] Speaker 2: Denver, who could be there. That year felt like that
[5:54] Speaker 2: was the Super Bowl.
[5:55] Speaker 3: And I know I'm getting out ahead of myself, but
[5:58] Speaker 3: it does feel to me, Bomani, like the winner of
[6:00] Speaker 3: this game is going to win it all.
[6:02] Speaker 2: And it's kind of, I mean, do you like the repeats?
[6:04] Speaker 3: I like the repeats as an analyst because it gives
[6:06] Speaker 3: you a lot of obviously taped to rewatch and matchups
[6:10] Speaker 3: to think about. Do you think fans like it when
[6:13] Speaker 3: teams that are familiar with each other face each other
[6:15] Speaker 3: multiple times and it culminates in an important game?
[6:18] Speaker 1: I think it depends on who the teams are that
[6:21] Speaker 1: we are talking about, right? So I think of this
[6:25] Speaker 1: in the context of.
[6:27] Speaker 4: College basketball, right?
[6:29] Speaker 1: So if you tell us that Carolina and Duke are
[6:32] Speaker 1: playing a third time, that is always amazing, right? It
[6:36] Speaker 1: almost doesn't matter what the circumstances are. That is going
[6:38] Speaker 1: to be amazing in the end. So the only way
[6:42] Speaker 1: you get this is if you have conference opponents, right?
[6:44] Speaker 1: People who play against each other fairly regularly. So you've
[6:48] Speaker 1: typically got some kind of twinge of rivalry that perks
[6:51] Speaker 1: up and that's what makes it better. Like if it's
[6:52] Speaker 1: Steelers Ravens and you're telling us it's the third time.
[6:55] Speaker 1: Hell yeah, we going for that. The old NFC East
[6:57] Speaker 1: when everything was a giant robbery or anything in the
[7:01] Speaker 1: AFC West where every game, they all hate each other
[7:04] Speaker 1: in a very particular way. This division, which has only
[7:07] Speaker 1: existed now for fewer.
[7:10] Speaker 4: Than 25 years, right?
[7:13] Speaker 1: Seattle and San Francisco had their thing in the previous decade.
[7:18] Speaker 2: There's some real hate there.
[7:19] Speaker 1: Yes, it's really there. This one doesn't feel like it
[7:22] Speaker 1: has it the same way.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're right. I don't think Seahawks fans
[7:27] Speaker 3: and Rams fans really hate each other the way Seahawks
[7:32] Speaker 3: fans and Niners. And then the Seahawks-Niners thing, you alluded
[7:34] Speaker 3: to this. This goes back to Pete Carroll and Jim
[7:37] Speaker 3: Harbaugh and when Colin Kaepernick was the quarterback and Russell Wilson.
[7:41] Speaker 3: Those fan bases despise you. You remember that Bose commercial
[7:45] Speaker 3: with Colin Kaepernick?
[7:47] Speaker 4: Oh, that's right. It's setting out the noise.
[7:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, of angry Seahawks fans screaming at him.
[7:55] Speaker 2: Wild sentence, by the way. Remember that Bose commercial with
[7:57] Speaker 2: Colin Kaepernick? Real thing that happened. But anyways, yeah, that
[8:01] Speaker 2: was a lot of real hate.
[8:02] Speaker 3: It felt like there were two teams that were both
[8:07] Speaker 3: peaking at the same time, both with the young quarterbacks,
[8:10] Speaker 3: both with the coaches who legitimately did not like each other.
[8:13] Speaker 3: For people who forget, Pete Carroll and I love coach hate.
[8:18] Speaker 3: And I don't think Sean McVay and Sean McVay don't just.
[8:21] Speaker 2: Like each other. You're right. There's nothing there.
[8:23] Speaker 4: I think.
[8:24] Speaker 3: This is a great matchup from like a football perspective,
[8:27] Speaker 3: because I think that the Rams offense and the Seahawks
[8:29] Speaker 3: defense are the two single best units left in the postseason.
[8:32] Speaker 3: But from like a fan base narrative perspective, I don't
[8:35] Speaker 3: think it really does it for people the same way.
[8:36] Speaker 5: You're right.
[8:38] Speaker 1: I miss Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll despising each other
[8:42] Speaker 1: as they did. Like, it's a shame it didn't work
[8:44] Speaker 1: out for Pete with the Raiders because we could have
[8:46] Speaker 1: got it right back.
[8:47] Speaker 2: I know.
[8:48] Speaker 3: It didn't even like, I don't even think we got
[8:51] Speaker 3: like an angry handshake. And I was trying to remember
[8:55] Speaker 3: what's your deal was in college, right?
[8:57] Speaker 2: That was, yeah. Oh my gosh. What a great moment
[9:01] Speaker 2: that was.
[9:01] Speaker 3: And then there was a moment in the NFL where
[9:04] Speaker 3: I think Pete, I don't want to fake. Maybe this
[9:08] Speaker 3: has been, it's a false memory, but I think he
[9:10] Speaker 3: slapped him in the butt once, like running off a field.
[9:12] Speaker 1: He did that to Jim Schwartz. And Jim Schwartz was
[9:16] Speaker 1: ready to fight him.
[9:18] Speaker 2: Love Jim shorts.
[9:19] Speaker 1: That was an amazing moment. Cause I can only imagine
[9:22] Speaker 1: how hard he did it.
[9:25] Speaker 5: Right.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Can you imagine like a Jim Harbaugh handshake when he's
[9:29] Speaker 1: like amped up?
[9:32] Speaker 2: Can you imagine Jim, Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel having
[9:35] Speaker 2: a conversation by the way?
[9:37] Speaker 4: Okay.
[9:38] Speaker 1: So for people who don't know this, Mike McDaniel, um,
[9:41] Speaker 1: continuing the lineage of Jim Harbaugh doing what he can.
[9:45] Speaker 4: Uh, he's a very diverse hire work.
[9:47] Speaker 1: Okay.
[9:48] Speaker 4: And he hired Mike McDaniel. Didn't see that coming, did you?
[9:51] Speaker 4: That's right. That's right.
[9:52] Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh is the unlikeliest ally of all the allies.
[9:55] Speaker 1: But he hired Mike McDaniel to be his offensive coordinator.
[9:58] Speaker 1: Two guys who couldn't have more. opposite personalities, but what
[10:01] Speaker 1: is so amazing to me about it and what I
[10:03] Speaker 1: like for McDaniel truly is Mike McDaniel runs, which should
[10:08] Speaker 1: be seen as a very physical offense, but his teams
[10:10] Speaker 1: were seen as being very soft. Nobody is ever going
[10:13] Speaker 1: to call a Jim Harbaugh team soft. So you combine
[10:16] Speaker 1: what Mike McDaniel brings to you with Jim Harbaugh toughness.
[10:19] Speaker 3: And y'all might want to watch out. I, this was
[10:21] Speaker 3: like of all the hires that have come in coaching,
[10:24] Speaker 3: offensive coordinator, whatever. This is the only one where I
[10:27] Speaker 3: feel like it's been met with a universal approval rating
[10:30] Speaker 3: from fans, from the football nerds.
[10:33] Speaker 2: Everybody seems to love it.
[10:34] Speaker 3: It seems to me like an, genius choice for Mike McDaniel,
[10:38] Speaker 3: who I imagine wants to get right back in the
[10:40] Speaker 3: head coaching mix pretty quick. You see he pulled out
[10:44] Speaker 3: of the Browns. He was considered for head coaching, and
[10:46] Speaker 3: he was like, nah. I mean, I think from a
[10:49] Speaker 3: career perspective, you get to live in LA by the beach.
[10:53] Speaker 3: Nobody bothers you because it's the Chargers. You get to
[10:56] Speaker 3: follow Greg Roman. We saw Todd Munkin get that bump, right?
[11:00] Speaker 3: So I thought this was a perfect hire, even if
[11:03] Speaker 3: the idea of them talking for more than 60 seconds
[11:06] Speaker 3: is hilarious to me.
[11:07] Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Harbaugh.
[11:09] Speaker 1: I don't know. Harbaugh is so interesting to me because
[11:11] Speaker 1: I feel like he apparently figures this out better than
[11:14] Speaker 1: one would expect, right? It's also so interesting that he
[11:17] Speaker 1: and his brother, our brothers, look exactly the same. We
[11:19] Speaker 1: don't feel that way about John Harbaugh at all. He
[11:22] Speaker 1: seems to be a somewhat normal, well-adjusted person.
[11:26] Speaker 3: Yeah, it is weird. It's like a perfect case study
[11:31] Speaker 3: in nature versus nurture. And I've been around both of them, and, like, interpersonally,
[11:38] Speaker 3: they are exactly how they seem. Like, there's no affect. Like,
[11:42] Speaker 3: Jim Harbaugh legitimately is that strange in person, and John
[11:45] Speaker 3: Harbaugh is that normal in person.
[11:48] Speaker 1: Jim also seems to be exactly all the way down
[11:50] Speaker 1: to the face like his father, and I can only
[11:53] Speaker 1: imagine how his father went over with people. He's of
[11:55] Speaker 1: an entirely different generation. Like, before, we had a tolerance
[11:58] Speaker 1: for being a weirdo.
[11:59] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[12:00] Speaker 2: Before we had a tolerance for being a weirdo.
[12:03] Speaker 3: But maybe Daniel's also very, he's not, he's odd, man.
[12:07] Speaker 1: He's a completely different archetype of weirdo.
[12:10] Speaker 4: And they're going to bring.
[12:11] Speaker 1: This together with their quarterback who used to cut his
[12:13] Speaker 1: own hair.
[12:17] Speaker 3: I think they're going to have to hire a defense
[12:18] Speaker 3: coordinator because I think they're, who I think is very good.
[12:21] Speaker 3: Their defense coach, I think is going to get a
[12:23] Speaker 3: job too.
[12:24] Speaker 5: So.
[12:25] Speaker 2: You know, we'll see. Did any of the hires that
[12:28] Speaker 2: have happened so far?
[12:29] Speaker 3: So we got Harbaugh to the Giants, Sala to the Titans.
[12:36] Speaker 4: I don't know if he owes people money.
[12:37] Speaker 2: Sala?
[12:38] Speaker 1: But, I mean, this is going to be his last
[12:41] Speaker 1: head coaching job. Yeah. That's why I don't understand him
[12:45] Speaker 1: doing this. I don't see a world where it works
[12:47] Speaker 1: for anybody on that job.
[12:49] Speaker 2: Oh, you're saying, like, why would he choose that job? Yes.
[12:53] Speaker 1: Uh.
[12:55] Speaker 3: First of all, I have a theory on that job
[12:56] Speaker 3: and him that is completely galaxy brained. But until the
[13:01] Speaker 3: hire happened, Bo, it really seemed like they were going
[13:03] Speaker 3: with Matt Nagy.
[13:04] Speaker 2: Do you see all that reporting?
[13:06] Speaker 4: I did see that. And that leads to my point.
[13:08] Speaker 1: The people that were willing to hire Matt Nagy, that's
[13:11] Speaker 1: who you went to work for.
[13:13] Speaker 2: Or galaxy brain.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Those people put out the Matt Nagy stuff so that
[13:19] Speaker 3: when they hired Robert Sala, Titans fans were.
[13:21] Speaker 4: Like, oh my God, this is amazing.
[13:23] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[13:24] Speaker 2: Like the reverse smokescreen. Interesting.
[13:28] Speaker 3: Set the expectations real low and upset your fan base
[13:31] Speaker 3: and then make a move that everybody's cool with.
[13:34] Speaker 2: I don't think it's that bad of a job, though.
[13:37] Speaker 2: I really don't.
[13:38] Speaker 3: I know that ownership's odd and there's a lot of
[13:40] Speaker 3: odd stuff behind the scenes there, but I feel like
[13:43] Speaker 3: the bar is very low. There's an understanding that the
[13:47] Speaker 3: roster is still in a rebuild. And I liked what
[13:50] Speaker 3: I saw from the quarterback year one.
[13:51] Speaker 2: I really did. I think he's really talented.
[13:54] Speaker 1: I do think, and maybe that's the thing with Salah,
[13:56] Speaker 1: who just left a situation with the Jets where he
[13:58] Speaker 1: didn't have a quarterback. And he looks at this one
[14:01] Speaker 1: and he sees, oh, there is a quarterback. And I
[14:04] Speaker 1: think his understanding that he'll always be able to come
[14:07] Speaker 1: back home to.
[14:08] Speaker 4: Kyle if it comes down to it.
[14:09] Speaker 1: Because defensive coordinators, for reasons good and bad, don't stay
[14:13] Speaker 1: there very long.
[14:14] Speaker 3: Can I tell you another story about Robert Salah that
[14:16] Speaker 3: I think will be of particular interest to you? we
[14:19] Speaker 3: were at NFL Live. You know, we're on site for Mondays,
[14:23] Speaker 3: like wherever the game is, right? So we go out
[14:26] Speaker 3: like a three to five Eastern. So the coaches and
[14:29] Speaker 3: everybody's kind of starting to arrive. So Salah does this
[14:33] Speaker 3: thing every game. I think they've shown it a lot
[14:36] Speaker 3: on the broadcast where he runs the entire stadium. That's
[14:38] Speaker 3: why he's so jacked. You're wondering like, why is Robert
[14:41] Speaker 3: Salah in amazing shape? He literally runs up downs the
[14:44] Speaker 3: entire stadium before the game. He did it when he
[14:46] Speaker 3: was the head coach of the Jets. he did it
[14:47] Speaker 3: when he was a defense coordinator at San Francisco 49ers.
[14:50] Speaker 3: So we were at, I can't remember which game, but
[14:51] Speaker 3: it was a Niners game.
[14:53] Speaker 2: And we were at the NFL NFL at the end
[14:56] Speaker 2: of NFL live.
[14:59] Speaker 3: We, they showed on camera, they were like, Oh, there's
[15:02] Speaker 3: Robert Sala, like running up and down the stadium doing
[15:05] Speaker 3: his like, and I really didn't want to throw our
[15:08] Speaker 3: director under the bus, but we came back and I
[15:12] Speaker 3: had to point out, That was K.J.
[15:14] Speaker 2: Wright. He got bald profiled.
[15:20] Speaker 4: K.J.
[15:21] Speaker 2: Wright is the linebacker's coach for the.
[15:22] Speaker 4: San Francisco 49ers.
[15:23] Speaker 1: In case anybody wants to feel old. That's a new
[15:26] Speaker 1: generation of player-turned-coach. Oh my God, that's so funny. We
[15:30] Speaker 1: had a topic once on Do You Question on Highly Questionable.
[15:34] Speaker 1: And I'll never forget seeing this happen. And I imagine
[15:37] Speaker 1: it wasn't the first time this happened. At the time,
[15:39] Speaker 1: Purdue was coached by a dude named Darryl Hazel.
[15:43] Speaker 4: And he was black.
[15:44] Speaker 1: I think he had coached like at Kent state or
[15:46] Speaker 1: something before that. And it was a, do you question something?
[15:49] Speaker 1: I think it was, I want to say it was
[15:51] Speaker 1: Jerry kill who coached at Minnesota at the time.
[15:53] Speaker 4: And the clip is post game. It's time for the
[15:55] Speaker 4: coach handshake.
[15:56] Speaker 1: And Jerry kill walks up to a black dude and
[15:59] Speaker 1: goes to shake his hand. And the black dude goes
[16:01] Speaker 1: over there and directed him to the actual head coach
[16:05] Speaker 1: because they had walked up on the wrong black dude.
[16:08] Speaker 4: And I kind of, Why would you think it was two?
[16:12] Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
[16:13] Speaker 1: Like I kind of understood where it was that he
[16:15] Speaker 1: was coming from, but I, oh my God, I could
[16:17] Speaker 1: not stop laughing.
[16:18] Speaker 4: Could not stop. That's tough.
[16:20] Speaker 2: That's tough. What was the last time you got mixed up?
[16:24] Speaker 4: Nah. Let me think.
[16:27] Speaker 1: Cause something happened recently that made me ask the question of,
[16:33] Speaker 1: do you think I'm somebody else?
[16:37] Speaker 4: But I don't, I have not, I've not had it
[16:39] Speaker 4: in person.
[16:40] Speaker 1: I have always like, so for example, one time inside
[16:43] Speaker 1: the NFL asked me to come on. Okay. And this is,
[16:47] Speaker 1: I think it was on Showtime. So, you know, James Brown,
[16:49] Speaker 1: Phil Sims, Ray Lewis was doing the show at the time.
[16:53] Speaker 1: And Brandon Marshall couldn't make it for whatever reason. And
[16:55] Speaker 1: they asked me to come. And I did tell my
[16:58] Speaker 1: guy to ask them, are you sure they're not intending
[17:02] Speaker 1: to call Dahani Jones? Because that's a very player show.
[17:08] Speaker 5: Uh.
[17:09] Speaker 2: I don't get it a lot.
[17:13] Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to stand alone out.
[17:15] Speaker 2: Here, right?
[17:16] Speaker 3: I was going to say, there's no Cassidy Hubbard walking
[17:19] Speaker 3: around doing NFL.
[17:20] Speaker 4: I mean, Michelle Steele.
[17:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was one.
[17:25] Speaker 3: But yeah, when I was younger, I used to get
[17:29] Speaker 3: mixed up more for other Asians, but not so much
[17:31] Speaker 3: these days.
[17:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, now I do have to remember, we got this
[17:35] Speaker 1: game that's actually going to happen here.
[17:36] Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, sorry. Hey, man, we're having a good time, baby.
[17:38] Speaker 4: You know how it goes.
[17:41] Speaker 1: Am I being too hard on your man as you
[17:43] Speaker 1: are the sympathizer? And I call him same, Darnold. Am
[17:47] Speaker 1: I being too hard on him? Because he's been rather
[17:49] Speaker 1: cheeky for the last month or so. Yeah. No.
[17:53] Speaker 3: So the second half of the season, it really started
[17:55] Speaker 3: with the Rams game in week 11. The offense kind
[17:58] Speaker 3: of fell off a cliff, particularly the passing attack. Statistically,
[18:01] Speaker 3: this is borne out. It's not just like turnovers and,
[18:05] Speaker 3: you know, the satisfaction of those, like the passing attack
[18:08] Speaker 3: became way worse. And I think, you know, so you're
[18:14] Speaker 3: just pointing out what's factual, frankly. I will say the
[18:18] Speaker 3: run game started improving, though, around the same time and
[18:21] Speaker 3: has gotten better and better and better as the season
[18:23] Speaker 3: has gone along. And I think you saw, certainly against
[18:26] Speaker 3: San Francisco, which is a very winded defense, obviously, when
[18:30] Speaker 3: the run game has been dominant, it does settle him
[18:34] Speaker 3: to some degree. And I think that's kind of the
[18:35] Speaker 3: key in this one, right? Like, cause they ran the
[18:37] Speaker 3: ball really well on the Rams in week 16. If
[18:40] Speaker 3: they can do that again with Kenneth Walker, who's been really,
[18:42] Speaker 3: really good as of late, then I'm feeling good about Darnold.
[18:46] Speaker 3: If it ends up being like a drop back, let's
[18:47] Speaker 3: see who could throw you out of this thing. You're
[18:49] Speaker 3: not feeling good given what this defense, this defensive coordinator
[18:53] Speaker 3: has done to him. So yeah, he, he, he is
[18:57] Speaker 3: not carrying this team right now. And I don't think
[19:00] Speaker 3: he would say that either. It just kind of comes
[19:02] Speaker 3: down to whether or not he's going to make the
[19:05] Speaker 3: sort of boneheaded mistakes we've seen against this defense, man.
[19:08] Speaker 1: I got us back to talking about the game and
[19:10] Speaker 1: talk about ginger cuz, and I already got us a
[19:12] Speaker 1: tangent that I forgot about. We're going to wind up
[19:14] Speaker 1: talking about San Francisco as much as we talk about
[19:16] Speaker 1: anybody else. Have you paid attention to how apparently an
[19:19] Speaker 1: urban legend is now maybe affecting the way that San
[19:22] Speaker 1: Francisco can attract players? Because I'm going to be honest
[19:24] Speaker 1: with you, I need your help a little bit on
[19:26] Speaker 1: this because I don't really understand the urban legend.
[19:29] Speaker 3: It's like, okay, as best I understand it, because you
[19:33] Speaker 3: know what my metric is for when a story is
[19:36] Speaker 3: broken contained when my husband asks me about it. So
[19:39] Speaker 3: for those who don't know, my husband is not a
[19:40] Speaker 3: football person, doesn't even care about it. he gets all
[19:44] Speaker 3: of his football news from hood clips, which means I,
[19:47] Speaker 3: the so the questions he asks me are like very
[19:50] Speaker 3: uh specific but he was like what's going on with
[19:55] Speaker 3: this uh electrical thing and sarah scott was like all
[19:57] Speaker 3: right this means i gotta figure what the hell's going
[19:59] Speaker 3: on here so the theory is this like substation or
[20:03] Speaker 3: whatever could be explaining what's going on with all these
[20:07] Speaker 3: niners players and these injuries I believe I've seen scientists
[20:10] Speaker 3: debunk this.
[20:12] Speaker 1: And to be clear to people, it's like some electrical
[20:14] Speaker 1: substation that is right next door to the stadium or
[20:16] Speaker 1: the facility?
[20:17] Speaker 2: Yes, it's the practice facility.
[20:19] Speaker 5: Yes.
[20:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, where they practice.
[20:23] Speaker 3: And because, you know, I think what's so confusing about
[20:25] Speaker 3: the Niners injuries is it's not one side of the ball.
[20:29] Speaker 3: it's not any particular kind of field. They seem to
[20:32] Speaker 3: happen everywhere in every stadium to lots of different kinds
[20:36] Speaker 3: of players.
[20:36] Speaker 2: So you can't look at Kyle Shannon and be like,
[20:38] Speaker 2: his offense is putting guys there. It is literally both
[20:40] Speaker 2: sides of the ball. It is contact. It is non-contact.
[20:43] Speaker 2: There's no through line to it. I did see that
[20:47] Speaker 2: Lynch was, I think he said he was going to
[20:48] Speaker 2: look into it. Did I miss?
[20:50] Speaker 3: I don't know if I didn't get a fake news
[20:51] Speaker 3: on that. My theory, Bo, is just that they played
[20:56] Speaker 3: a lot of football because they go deep. They've been
[20:58] Speaker 3: going deep in Kyle Shanahan. They've been playing postseason games
[21:02] Speaker 3: for so many of the years. And because of the
[21:04] Speaker 3: NFL being the way it is, if you play a
[21:06] Speaker 3: lot of football, you're more likely to get hurt.
[21:08] Speaker 2: I know there's other teams that.
[21:08] Speaker 3: Have played a lot of football, like Philadelphia, that don't
[21:11] Speaker 3: seem to have the same issues. But there is pretty
[21:14] Speaker 3: clearly a correlation.
[21:14] Speaker 1: Detroit has the same issues, and they've played a good
[21:17] Speaker 1: bit of football the last couple of years.
[21:19] Speaker 3: If there's something I know about injuries, the more you play,
[21:21] Speaker 3: the more likely you are to get them. And that's
[21:23] Speaker 3: not even like in those games, right? Like you play
[21:25] Speaker 3: a lot of football, you get less of an off season,
[21:28] Speaker 3: you practice more. It's just, we think about how violent
[21:33] Speaker 3: and how physically taxing the sport is. And this is
[21:35] Speaker 3: why there's such outcry over adding games every year. Every
[21:39] Speaker 3: single game, every single additional week matters a lot.
[21:42] Speaker 4: I want to make sure that people understand this.
[21:45] Speaker 1: Somebody sent a tweet that said, it's this electrical substation
[21:50] Speaker 1: that's right next to the San Francisco 49ers practice facility.
[21:53] Speaker 1: And it caught on like wildfire on the internet And
[21:57] Speaker 1: it caught on with players where you had like agents
[22:01] Speaker 1: and the likes asking questions about, hey, what's going on here?
[22:04] Speaker 1: John Lynch at their end of season postmortem press conference said, yes,
[22:08] Speaker 1: that they have had to address this with people, that
[22:10] Speaker 1: this thing bounced around on the Internet. And now people
[22:13] Speaker 1: are afraid that they ligaments is getting wobbly because of
[22:17] Speaker 1: this thing that's next door, because somebody said it. on
[22:22] Speaker 1: the internet the problem is it was presented somewhat plausibly
[22:26] Speaker 1: in such a way that even rational thinking people had
[22:29] Speaker 1: to ask their smart friends hey this isn't real though is.
[22:34] Speaker 2: It and i i don't know enough about science um
[22:42] Speaker 2: it is crazy with the niners though right like yeah.
[22:47] Speaker 4: They're a fascinating franchise, man.
[22:48] Speaker 1: And they got, look, every now and then good teams
[22:51] Speaker 1: get their doors blown off.
[22:52] Speaker 4: But I did not.
[22:53] Speaker 1: That was, I thought, even as decimated as they were,
[22:57] Speaker 1: that spoke a lot to how strong Seattle has been,
[23:00] Speaker 1: the way that they just kicked their asses.
[23:02] Speaker 2: You know what it also spoke to, and I'm sorry,
[23:04] Speaker 2: this is going to sound like a hater comment, how
[23:08] Speaker 2: horrible the Eagles offense is.
[23:10] Speaker 4: What the hell?
[23:13] Speaker 2: Were you not thinking that watching gimpy? Like Sam Darnold was.
[23:16] Speaker 3: I thought he, you know, he didn't have to do
[23:18] Speaker 3: a lot, but you look fine. They were running rough
[23:19] Speaker 3: shot off them. I'm watching this thinking, damn Philadelphia.
[23:23] Speaker 2: You couldn't even put together a drive on this smash unit.
[23:27] Speaker 1: Hey, let me tell you something next year for both
[23:30] Speaker 1: Philadelphia and Buffalo is going to be really interesting to
[23:33] Speaker 1: see like how you recover from what just happened. Now
[23:36] Speaker 1: granted the last time the Eagles had a, how do
[23:38] Speaker 1: you recover from what just happened season?
[23:39] Speaker 4: They won a super bowl. Yeah.
[23:42] Speaker 1: It is full on chaos there, but that was a
[23:46] Speaker 1: loss where they decided to fire Sirianni. It's understandable because
[23:49] Speaker 1: you're not supposed to lose to that team.
[23:51] Speaker 3: You should not, they should not have lost second and,
[23:54] Speaker 3: you know, credit to Shanahan and Sala and all of that.
[23:57] Speaker 2: But like, that is, that looks, I don't think, I'm
[24:00] Speaker 2: not talking about the defense.
[24:01] Speaker 3: Cause I think that Niners offense, I mean, I saw
[24:03] Speaker 3: them move the ball despite injuries on, they beat teams
[24:06] Speaker 3: with Mac Jones. Like that's, They were a little bit
[24:08] Speaker 3: healthier on that side of the ball. They were a
[24:09] Speaker 3: lot healthier on that side of the ball. And like,
[24:10] Speaker 3: obviously they didn't have Kittle against the Seahawks.
[24:13] Speaker 2: That's respectable. Fine. Not being able to move the ball
[24:16] Speaker 2: on that defense is so bad.
[24:20] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[24:20] Speaker 3: So I think the flip side of that, to go
[24:22] Speaker 3: back to Seahawks though, is like, that's why I'm not
[24:24] Speaker 3: overconfident about the Seahawks offense coming off of that beatdown,
[24:27] Speaker 3: because I don't think it's very impressive to, you know,
[24:31] Speaker 3: beat San Francisco.
[24:32] Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we've got the AFC Championship game,
[24:36] Speaker 1: and whether or not we even need to pay attention
[24:37] Speaker 1: to it, given that one of the quarterbacks in it
[24:40] Speaker 1: is Jared Stidham. Every Friday from 6 to 7.30, it's

[27:36] Speaker 4: All right, we are back with Mita Kimes.
[27:38] Speaker 1: I love how everybody is invested in making these games
[27:43] Speaker 1: seem interesting no matter what. The NBA has this problem
[27:46] Speaker 1: where too many people in its media tell the truth, right?
[27:48] Speaker 1: They'll tell you what they think a game is not
[27:50] Speaker 1: going to be bad, everything else. Not in the NFL, boy.
[27:53] Speaker 1: I saw that boy Peter Schrag on TV talking about Stiddy.
[27:57] Speaker 4: He was hype.
[27:58] Speaker 1: He's just like, Bill Belichick chose Stiddy. Josh McDaniels chose Stiddy.
[28:04] Speaker 1: Sean Payton has chosen Stiddy. A bunch of guys that
[28:08] Speaker 1: have never actually really chosen a good quarterback before. Just
[28:11] Speaker 1: so we're clear, right? Belichick had Tom Brady. Josh McDaniels
[28:16] Speaker 1: had Tom Brady.
[28:19] Speaker 4: Who's the other one? Sean Payton I mean, he got
[28:20] Speaker 4: Drew Brees.
[28:21] Speaker 2: Well, he chose him as backup. Sean Payton did not
[28:23] Speaker 2: choose Jarrett.
[28:23] Speaker 4: Stanton to be starting quarterback.
[28:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's what I'm saying. That's an important distinction, right?
[28:27] Speaker 1: These guys had a good quarterback one time.
[28:30] Speaker 4: I know Drew Brees was good.
[28:31] Speaker 1: I knew Drew Brees was good by the time Sean
[28:33] Speaker 1: Payton made the decision on him.
[28:34] Speaker 4: You see what I'm saying?
[28:35] Speaker 1: Anyway, he's going to be starting in the AFC championship game.
[28:38] Speaker 1: They're going to get that game at home. They have
[28:41] Speaker 1: an incredible defense. They have won a Super Bowl 10
[28:44] Speaker 1: years ago in Denver with a terrible quarterback, but the
[28:47] Speaker 1: terrible quarterback was Peyton Manning, right? Like, he could still
[28:49] Speaker 1: do Peyton Manning-y things at times. They're going up against
[28:54] Speaker 1: the Patriots. Drake May did not look good against a
[28:57] Speaker 1: great defense when he had it at home, though he
[28:59] Speaker 1: still made some big plays.
[29:01] Speaker 4: To me, this feels like a game New England should win.
[29:03] Speaker 2: I agree.
[29:05] Speaker 3: I'll say one thing about the the run with Manning,
[29:08] Speaker 3: I think that defense, the no-fly zone defense, was better
[29:11] Speaker 3: than this Broncos defense.
[29:13] Speaker 4: Interesting.
[29:13] Speaker 3: So I think that's important here. I think the Texans
[29:16] Speaker 3: and the Seahawks were cut above Denver. I think we've
[29:19] Speaker 3: seen that. And I think New England... First of all,
[29:22] Speaker 3: Drake made his face like, I can't lay off defenses.
[29:24] Speaker 2: Good Lord, right?
[29:25] Speaker 4: You got to go.
[29:26] Speaker 3: Chargers, really good, really well coached. Texans might be the
[29:29] Speaker 3: best in the NFL next to Seattle. The Broncos.
[29:32] Speaker 2: And then if they could potentially base the Seahawks, right?
[29:35] Speaker 2: He did enough. And I thought he made some impressive plays.
[29:38] Speaker 2: But as far as like the other side of the ball.
[29:40] Speaker 3: I'm not going to lie to you and say like
[29:41] Speaker 3: Jared Stidham is the next Nick Foles.
[29:45] Speaker 2: I think he's competent.
[29:46] Speaker 3: So, you know, I watched his games to prepare for
[29:48] Speaker 3: this week. This is not, who was the last time
[29:51] Speaker 3: we saw like a truly Who was last backup quarterback
[29:55] Speaker 3: who had to play in a, other than Foles?
[29:57] Speaker 4: Foles had a run.
[29:58] Speaker 1: When Purdy got hurt in that game against the Eagles.
[30:02] Speaker 2: Jesus.
[30:03] Speaker 4: Did they even have a quarterback? I feel like they
[30:05] Speaker 4: was out there running the wing teeth.
[30:06] Speaker 2: It was Josh Johnson, I think. And then they talked
[30:08] Speaker 2: about like, does Christian McCaffrey going to have to go
[30:09] Speaker 2: into this game?
[30:10] Speaker 4: Yes, that's what it was.
[30:12] Speaker 1: Okay.
[30:12] Speaker 2: So Jared Stim is competent. I genuinely believe that.
[30:15] Speaker 3: Like after watching him, he is not going to pee
[30:18] Speaker 3: down his leg. He is not like a, should not
[30:20] Speaker 3: be playing in.
[30:20] Speaker 2: The NFL type of guy.
[30:22] Speaker 1: No, not at all.
[30:23] Speaker 2: But I do.
[30:24] Speaker 3: Unfortunately think for him, assuming the Patriots defense feels like
[30:26] Speaker 3: it's kind of peaking at the right time, like guys
[30:28] Speaker 3: have been getting healthy.
[30:29] Speaker 2: They look very well coached. I thought Milton Williams was
[30:32] Speaker 2: extraordinary in the last round. It was like their big signing.
[30:35] Speaker 3: So this is not like if you if sorry to
[30:38] Speaker 3: keep harping on this, but like if it was Jared
[30:40] Speaker 3: Stidham against the Niners, Bo with Sean Payton, I actually
[30:43] Speaker 3: think they could.
[30:44] Speaker 2: Move the ball on them.
[30:46] Speaker 3: I think the Patriots pose a bigger challenge. They're going
[30:49] Speaker 3: to have to force Drake made a fumble. And that's
[30:51] Speaker 3: been an issue for him. in the post season, this
[30:54] Speaker 3: defense is going to have to play the game of
[30:56] Speaker 3: their lives. Nick Bonito step right out, be a legend.
[30:59] Speaker 3: Patriots left tackle has been.
[31:00] Speaker 2: Struggling, right?
[31:01] Speaker 4: Yes, he has.
[31:02] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:02] Speaker 2: It's been rough.
[31:03] Speaker 3: So I, I'm not going to tell you this is
[31:05] Speaker 3: going to be a good game, but I also don't
[31:07] Speaker 3: think it's going to be a blowout either.
[31:08] Speaker 2: I really don't because that defense.
[31:10] Speaker 1: You know, I think I'm talking myself into another direction
[31:12] Speaker 1: here because to be fair to Sean Payton, we have
[31:16] Speaker 1: seen him in new Orleans and even, I mean, He
[31:21] Speaker 1: did some things.
[31:22] Speaker 4: With Russell Wilson, right?
[31:23] Speaker 1: At a point in which Russell Wilson, it went from
[31:26] Speaker 1: let Russ cook to Russ is cooked, right? And he still,
[31:29] Speaker 1: I mean, Russell Wilson made the Pro Bowl that year
[31:31] Speaker 1: in spite of whatever was going on up there.
[31:34] Speaker 4: But they had non-terrible.
[31:38] Speaker 1: Offenses in New Orleans with Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Teddy Bridgewater.
[31:46] Speaker 4: Just, you know, a run of okay guys.
[31:49] Speaker 1: Now, the fact that Peyton convinced himself that Taysom Hill
[31:52] Speaker 1: could be that.
[31:52] Speaker 4: Dude, that part is a demerit.
[31:55] Speaker 1: But his ability to make it okay with him makes
[31:58] Speaker 1: you think that maybe just for this week, they can
[32:00] Speaker 1: pull it off.
[32:01] Speaker 2: Peyton's really good, too. Like, I think, like, maybe, I
[32:06] Speaker 2: don't know why. I feel like he hasn't gotten as
[32:09] Speaker 2: much appreciation for the job he's done with Bo Nix
[32:13] Speaker 2: in that offense this year.
[32:14] Speaker 1: Well, that's because you and I still don't think Bo
[32:17] Speaker 1: Nix is good and other people do.
[32:20] Speaker 2: I'll say this.
[32:22] Speaker 3: I'm watching the Broncos offense on tape every week and
[32:24] Speaker 3: I see the way Peyton, Sean Peyton, is so good
[32:28] Speaker 3: at creating matchup advantages for his guys. He's so good
[32:31] Speaker 3: in game. Like against Buffalo last week, you just saw
[32:36] Speaker 3: every time like a Bills defender got hurt, Peyton would
[32:39] Speaker 3: immediately find a way, score touchdown.
[32:40] Speaker 2: On them, right?
[32:42] Speaker 3: And I just think his unique ability to game plan
[32:48] Speaker 3: for the weaknesses of your defense, coupled with that defense,
[32:52] Speaker 3: coupled with the Broncos probably have the best offensive line
[32:55] Speaker 3: left in the playoff.
[32:56] Speaker 2: That matters a lot because the Patriots defense, I know
[32:59] Speaker 2: they've looked good.
[32:59] Speaker 3: Ooh, they faced the Chargers and the Texans offenses. And
[33:03] Speaker 3: those offensive lines are turnstiles. And this new Denver Broncos
[33:07] Speaker 3: offensive line is fantastic. So yeah, I'm not trying to
[33:10] Speaker 3: sell this to you as being like.
[33:11] Speaker 2: Jarrett Stidham's going to lead this team.
[33:14] Speaker 3: But I think there's enough factors at play that favor
[33:18] Speaker 3: Denver that could at least keep this close.
[33:20] Speaker 2: I'm picking New England, of course.
[33:22] Speaker 4: I'm going to be honest with you.
[33:23] Speaker 1: I'm so glad that you have watched Denver on film
[33:26] Speaker 1: and all of these things because this thing happens from
[33:29] Speaker 1: time to time. The clearest example I remember for me
[33:34] Speaker 1: was the 2011 49ers. And what happens is, A team
[33:40] Speaker 1: plays well and defies expectation. And I don't necessarily believe
[33:48] Speaker 1: it's going to keep going. And then it keeps going
[33:50] Speaker 1: and it keeps going. And the next thing you know,
[33:53] Speaker 1: it's the AFC championship game. And I have not actually
[33:56] Speaker 1: watched the Broncos for real play outside from that Buffalo game.
[34:01] Speaker 1: I mentioned the 11-49ers because I didn't watch them play
[34:06] Speaker 1: until that division round game against the Saints where Dante
[34:09] Speaker 1: Wittner knocked Pierre Thomas out at the goal line.
[34:12] Speaker 4: And I was like, shit, these boys be out here hitting.
[34:14] Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I would have loved to watch these guys
[34:18] Speaker 1: play football. And then I was on it after that
[34:21] Speaker 1: with Denver. I've watched enough of them in late game windows.
[34:26] Speaker 5: Right.
[34:26] Speaker 1: Because something to they play a lot of games in
[34:28] Speaker 1: the late game window where they're not the game of
[34:30] Speaker 1: the week. So you just kind of pop in like
[34:32] Speaker 1: I'm at Nick's house and it pops in on the
[34:33] Speaker 1: TV that's set for the Red Zone channel. And you
[34:36] Speaker 1: see Bo Nix feast or famine or something going on
[34:38] Speaker 1: along those lines. I just know the defense is good.
[34:41] Speaker 1: Don't ask me who play on it. I just know
[34:43] Speaker 1: they're good. I know they got Nick Bonito, who does
[34:46] Speaker 1: not look like I would have think a Nick Bonito
[34:48] Speaker 1: would look, you know, but he good.
[34:50] Speaker 4: He is fast.
[34:52] Speaker 3: I mean, he, I know maybe this could take us
[34:55] Speaker 3: to a Josh Allen conversation during the game when Josh
[34:59] Speaker 3: Allen had the goofy fumble before halftime, which was his
[35:02] Speaker 3: worst play of the game. I made the mistake of
[35:06] Speaker 3: posting on Twitter. That's an incredible play by Nick Bonito.
[35:09] Speaker 3: Because it was an incredible play by Nick Bonito. He
[35:12] Speaker 3: was rushing the passer. He reverses field and chases down
[35:16] Speaker 3: Josh Allen in the open field and gets an arm
[35:19] Speaker 3: on it. And then Josh Allen's holding the ball like this.
[35:21] Speaker 3: And that's entirely on him. No question.
[35:24] Speaker 2: But for Bonito to do that outrageous play.
[35:28] Speaker 3: This is how I knew the Josh Allen thing was
[35:30] Speaker 3: going to go off the rails this week. I posted that,
[35:32] Speaker 3: and immediately there were people who were, I got ratioed, like,
[35:35] Speaker 3: you're making excuses for Josh Allen.
[35:37] Speaker 2: I was like, what is happening?
[35:39] Speaker 4: I was trying to say Jake Bonito.
[35:40] Speaker 2: Made an amazing play, and I deleted it. I was like,
[35:42] Speaker 2: you know what? I'm not going to tweet about Josh
[35:43] Speaker 2: Allen today because this is apparently going to be radioactive.
[35:47] Speaker 1: I had somebody accuse me of making excuses for Josh Allen.
[35:51] Speaker 1: And if they think me and you are making excuses
[35:53] Speaker 1: for Josh Allen, what has the world come to?
[35:57] Speaker 2: Like I started getting hit with the, well, if Lamar,
[36:01] Speaker 2: I'm like, pardon me? Mina Kimes?
[36:07] Speaker 3: You're accusing me of being anti-Lamar? Like I was like,
[36:11] Speaker 3: all right, I'm not gonna, I'm just gonna stay away
[36:13] Speaker 3: from this one. But I would, I just want more
[36:15] Speaker 3: thought of Bonito before we get to Allen stuff. That
[36:18] Speaker 3: three-play sequence, dude. Before the half, he forces a fumble.
[36:21] Speaker 3: Second play, he stops to run. Third play, he forces
[36:24] Speaker 3: another fumble. One of the most impactful three-play sequences you
[36:27] Speaker 3: will see from a defensive player all year long. He's
[36:30] Speaker 3: been extraordinary this year, and I think he has potential
[36:32] Speaker 3: to take over this game.
[36:34] Speaker 1: Josh Allen turns everybody on the internet into Sam Darnold.
[36:39] Speaker 4: They all be seeing ghosts.
[36:41] Speaker 1: Because the thing that happens with the internet stuff now is,
[36:44] Speaker 1: it's so tribal, right? Like it's not about your point.
[36:47] Speaker 1: It's about whose side you're on. And people just argue
[36:51] Speaker 1: the side. So once the conclusion has been drawn, by definition,
[36:55] Speaker 1: like the word that worries me the most on the
[36:58] Speaker 1: internet is y'all. Anytime somebody makes a reference to what
[37:02] Speaker 1: y'all are doing, right? So one person thinks that Josh
[37:07] Speaker 1: Allen is the greatest quarterback of all time. there's another
[37:14] Speaker 1: person who thinks that Lamar Jackson is overrated.
[37:18] Speaker 4: Those aren't always the same people, right?
[37:22] Speaker 1: And so if you have enough of a critical mass
[37:24] Speaker 1: of people saying one thing on one side, and then
[37:26] Speaker 1: people saying one thing on the other, then it turns
[37:28] Speaker 1: into a, but y'all be dah, dah, dah. And it's like, oh, whoa,
[37:31] Speaker 1: wait a minute, wait a minute. Like this could go
[37:34] Speaker 1: a bunch of different ways. And so with Allen, I mean, look,
[37:38] Speaker 1: we have, I've said what's going on for years, and
[37:40] Speaker 1: people thought I was crazy, and then it really just
[37:42] Speaker 1: came to bear here. It's some people heavily invested in
[37:45] Speaker 1: Josh Allen being that dude. They know who they are,
[37:47] Speaker 1: only they know what their reasons are, but they're there.
[37:50] Speaker 1: And we ain't never had a dude in year eight
[37:53] Speaker 1: have four turnovers in a playoff game and be a
[37:56] Speaker 1: former MVP who still has not gotten to a Super Bowl,
[37:59] Speaker 1: and the prevailing sentiment from the media was, isn't it sad?
[38:04] Speaker 5: What? So.
[38:08] Speaker 3: Here's where I landed on that, because I don't think
[38:09] Speaker 3: anything you said is wrong. And obviously, you know, he
[38:13] Speaker 3: had a bad game, right? He's been good in the postseason.
[38:17] Speaker 4: He was bad.
[38:18] Speaker 3: And the same could be said of Lamar Jackson. And
[38:22] Speaker 3: I've tried to say that about Lamar Jackson in the past,
[38:25] Speaker 3: and it's been kind of the flip side of it.
[38:27] Speaker 3: But I think.
[38:30] Speaker 2: What I have seen, what really struck me, especially with
[38:34] Speaker 2: an innocent.
[38:35] Speaker 6: Post about Nick Bonito forcing a fumble with an hustle
[38:37] Speaker 6: play is there's been a lot of built up, clearly
[38:42] Speaker 6: a lot of built up feelings amongst sports fans that
[38:45] Speaker 6: the media has been too high on Josh Allen.
[38:48] Speaker 2: And I think there's validity to that, right?
[38:51] Speaker 3: I have my, my stance on it has about like
[38:54] Speaker 3: perception of Josh Allen and kind of the way he's
[38:56] Speaker 3: talked about is I never agreed with the idea that
[39:00] Speaker 3: he was in a tier above Lamar and Joe. I have,
[39:04] Speaker 3: and you know this because we've talked about quarterbacks forever,
[39:07] Speaker 3: I've felt pretty strongly there's a big four in the
[39:10] Speaker 3: NFL right now, those three and Mahomes. I have continued
[39:15] Speaker 3: to insist that Mahomes is still the best quarterback on earth.
[39:17] Speaker 3: You guys can go to any of my quarterback rankings
[39:19] Speaker 3: and see this. And then I have felt that the
[39:22] Speaker 3: other three, I probably would put Allen and Lamar of
[39:24] Speaker 3: a bro personally, but just, you know, they're pretty, pretty equal.
[39:27] Speaker 3: So I have always objected to the idea and I've
[39:29] Speaker 3: seen people that to do this, that Allen was above them.
[39:31] Speaker 3: That's I've been clear about it. So I think I
[39:35] Speaker 3: am sympathetic to kind of the general annoyance. I have
[39:39] Speaker 3: also seen this week, people arguing that Josh Allen is
[39:42] Speaker 3: no longer a top five quarterback. Josh Allen is, you know, like,
[39:46] Speaker 3: and like, all right, like, To me, I think we've seen,
[39:52] Speaker 3: and this always happens with anything on the internet, the
[39:54] Speaker 3: pendulum has swung a little bit too far in terms
[39:57] Speaker 3: of a reaction to a playoff game. But I understand
[40:01] Speaker 3: that it's driven by what people have been seeing, the
[40:05] Speaker 3: way this quarterback has been talked about the last few years.
[40:07] Speaker 3: And I get it.
[40:09] Speaker 2: I get it. I understand it.
[40:10] Speaker 1: Josh Allen is what if David Duvall had panned out?
[40:16] Speaker 1: And so when I say that, When Tiger Woods first
[40:18] Speaker 1: hit the scene and really took it on fire.
[40:21] Speaker 4: We needed to find a rival, right?
[40:23] Speaker 1: And David Duvall was the first guy that we really
[40:26] Speaker 1: trotted out there to try to make into a rival.
[40:29] Speaker 1: And then it didn't work. And then it kind of
[40:31] Speaker 1: moved to Phil Mickelson, right? Like, you know, we kind
[40:33] Speaker 1: of bounced around to different people. I guess Maria Sharapova,
[40:36] Speaker 1: these are the- Yeah, that's the one I thought of, yeah.
[40:38] Speaker 4: Serena Williams.
[40:39] Speaker 1: But the difference is Sharapova, to be fair to her,
[40:42] Speaker 1: won their first couple of matches, right?
[40:45] Speaker 4: And so there was reason to think it was a thing.
[40:47] Speaker 1: And then Serena just kicked her ass for the rest
[40:50] Speaker 1: of their lives, right? After that, it happened. But Allen
[40:54] Speaker 1: actually did turn into that guy. What's weird to me
[40:58] Speaker 1: about it, and I guess maybe it's just in terms
[41:00] Speaker 1: of games they played against each other or whatever, But
[41:03] Speaker 1: the idea that it is clear that Josh Allen's a
[41:05] Speaker 1: better quarterback than Lamar Jackson is insane. Like if you
[41:07] Speaker 1: go look at what Lamar did last year, that was
[41:10] Speaker 1: one of the greatest individual seasons. Went to like 41
[41:12] Speaker 1: touchdowns and four interceptions or something like that. Like this
[41:15] Speaker 1: idea that Lamar Jackson can't pass is insane, right? There's
[41:19] Speaker 1: legitimate debate about which of those two guys is better. Now,
[41:22] Speaker 1: if you are a type who likes a big, strong,
[41:25] Speaker 1: hard-throwing quarterback, then Josh Allen's going to be the one
[41:28] Speaker 1: that you prefer, right? If you like a full-on, legitimate,
[41:31] Speaker 1: dual threat, Lamar Jackson's going to be your guy. There's
[41:34] Speaker 1: room to decide between those two. What I found to
[41:37] Speaker 1: be strange about it is we never truly positioned Mahomes
[41:40] Speaker 1: and Lamar as rivals.
[41:43] Speaker 4: Right.
[41:43] Speaker 1: It was never which one you got between the two
[41:45] Speaker 1: of those. But we did do that with Josh Allen,
[41:48] Speaker 1: even though Mahomes is kicking his keister or beating them
[41:51] Speaker 1: every time the game mattered.
[41:52] Speaker 4: And it felt very much contrived.
[41:55] Speaker 1: Right. But the sad part is, and I think you
[41:57] Speaker 1: agree with me on this. Josh Allen is damn near
[42:00] Speaker 1: as good as they say he is. It's just that
[42:03] Speaker 1: when he's bad, he's so much worse than they say
[42:06] Speaker 1: he is.
[42:07] Speaker 3: I think also, because I totally agree with everything you
[42:11] Speaker 3: said about why is Josh Allen being positioned here, even though,
[42:19] Speaker 3: like you said, Mahomes had the head-to-head and all that.
[42:21] Speaker 2: To me.
[42:25] Speaker 3: This felt what we've seen over the last week. And
[42:27] Speaker 3: the frustration also just felt like a lot of spillover
[42:30] Speaker 3: from the MVP stuff last year. And it like, it
[42:33] Speaker 3: was like kind of simmering. And I, you know, I
[42:36] Speaker 3: said this, I voted for Lamar. I've said my reasoning, whatever.
[42:38] Speaker 3: I also thought it was close, but I still thought
[42:42] Speaker 3: Lamar deserved it. And I think people were very surprised
[42:46] Speaker 3: when Alan won. But because of the post-season results, there
[42:50] Speaker 3: wasn't like quite the blowback necessarily with Lamar and, And
[42:53] Speaker 3: then I think it like simmered, simmered, simmered, simmered for
[42:56] Speaker 3: a year. And it felt like it came back to
[42:58] Speaker 3: the surface in a big way. Because the thing that
[43:01] Speaker 3: Allen supporters have always had on Jackson is postseason, pointing
[43:04] Speaker 3: to the postseason. So for Allen to fall flat like
[43:07] Speaker 3: that in a postseason game was like an uno reverse card.
[43:10] Speaker 3: And suddenly, you know, that didn't exist anymore. Yeah.
[43:14] Speaker 2: And, you know, I get the frustration.
[43:16] Speaker 3: Like I said, I think people are right when they
[43:18] Speaker 3: point to the way he's talked about, and I have
[43:21] Speaker 3: disagreed with the idea that people have put him above
[43:23] Speaker 3: or put him in the Mahomes tier.
[43:26] Speaker 2: But, you know, it is impossible to.
[43:31] Speaker 1: And nobody wants to talk about the one thing, right?
[43:33] Speaker 4: Like, this is.
[43:35] Speaker 1: It is very interesting that Black quarterbacks have not.
[43:39] Speaker 1: The idea of having a Black quarterback is no longer
[43:42] Speaker 1: really provocative.
[43:44] Speaker 4: But the idea of the.
[43:45] Speaker 1: Black quarterback is still provocative, if that makes sense.
[43:48] Speaker 4: You know what I mean? We are past a point.
[43:51] Speaker 1: I said when we did our series last year on
[43:52] Speaker 1: the top 25 athletes of the last 25 years that
[43:56] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, I felt like, was the last black quarterback
[43:58] Speaker 1: to really be up against blackness when he came into
[44:00] Speaker 1: the league. We're talking about moving you to a different
[44:02] Speaker 1: position and stuff like that. I don't think that's going
[44:05] Speaker 1: to happen anymore. But it's so obviously the subtext of
[44:10] Speaker 1: what is going on here. And we knew it was
[44:11] Speaker 1: the subtext because of the way them Bills Mafia people
[44:13] Speaker 1: were about Tyrod when all he did was get him
[44:16] Speaker 1: to the playoffs for the first time in 19 years
[44:18] Speaker 1: and all they wanted to do was get him the
[44:19] Speaker 1: hell out of there and then lie for two years
[44:21] Speaker 1: about how good Josh Allen was.
[44:23] Speaker 4: Like the investment was so obvious in what happened.
[44:25] Speaker 1: And like I say, my favorite thing about it, you
[44:27] Speaker 1: and I, we were holding out on Josh Allen. My
[44:29] Speaker 1: favorite thing is, thank goodness he's actually good. It's been
[44:32] Speaker 1: so much fun to watch. And then they make it hard.
[44:36] Speaker 2: And I think also this isn't just a fan thing.
[44:39] Speaker 3: Mike Sando does these great QB tiers, which they're not
[44:43] Speaker 3: his tiers. He's surveying executives and people around the league.
[44:46] Speaker 3: And consistently, I have seen in these tiers, Lamar be
[44:49] Speaker 3: underrated relative to Allen and Burrow. And these are NFL
[44:53] Speaker 3: coaches and executives. This is a real thing.
[44:56] Speaker 2: At this point, my.
[44:58] Speaker 3: Feeling is anyone who does not acknowledge Lamar how good
[45:01] Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson is as a passer is not worth my time.
[45:05] Speaker 3: I just genuinely, I'm not going to get in these
[45:07] Speaker 3: arguments anymore. You don't, you're, you're, you do not have
[45:10] Speaker 3: the ability to watch.
[45:10] Speaker 2: Football to me. I just, I just statistically film any
[45:14] Speaker 2: of it. I'm just not doing it with you. It
[45:16] Speaker 2: is funny.
[45:17] Speaker 3: So Dominique to there's absolutely like a huge racial undertone
[45:21] Speaker 3: to all of this.
[45:22] Speaker 2: And like, it is funny. I do see the.
[45:25] Speaker 3: Registered voters, NFL players thing going around by the way.
[45:31] Speaker 3: somebody put out all the NFL positions and who they
[45:34] Speaker 3: were registered to vote for.
[45:35] Speaker 4: I saw that.
[45:36] Speaker 2: And they were like, this is obviously a.
[45:37] Speaker 3: Race that you know is talking about. It's kind of
[45:39] Speaker 3: how I feel about this.
[45:41] Speaker 2: I will say this.
[45:41] Speaker 3: When people are talking about the double standards with Josh Allen,
[45:45] Speaker 3: it's an interesting conversation.
[45:47] Speaker 2: It's a nuanced conversation. And people are rightfully bringing it.
[45:50] Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson is the counterpoint.
[45:52] Speaker 3: And I think that is the basis of this conversation.
[45:54] Speaker 2: I see Jalen Hurts fans trying to edge their way
[45:57] Speaker 2: to the conversation.
[45:58] Speaker 1: Get out of here.
[46:02] Speaker 3: They're like, well, you know, people say Jalen hurts. You know, he,
[46:06] Speaker 3: Josh Allen had the great offensive line.
[46:08] Speaker 2: He's got, I'm like, we are not comparing the bills
[46:10] Speaker 2: and the Eagles roster. We're not doing this. We're not
[46:12] Speaker 2: comparing these quarterbacks. You get out of this conversation.
[46:15] Speaker 4: You're not helping the case.
[46:16] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[46:16] Speaker 1: You got to go back over there a little closer
[46:18] Speaker 1: to the median.
[46:19] Speaker 5: Right.
[46:22] Speaker 2: He goes, fans are getting mad at me for saying this.
[46:26] Speaker 4: We over here at club outlier, all right?
[46:28] Speaker 1: Like you need to go back over there with the
[46:33] Speaker 1: run of the mill, right?
[46:35] Speaker 2: And you can see it in there. They're coming out.
[46:37] Speaker 2: They came out.
[46:38] Speaker 3: Well, the one I saw, Jalen Hurts, people act like
[46:42] Speaker 3: he was so off with the playoffs, but he didn't
[46:43] Speaker 3: turn over the ball once.
[46:45] Speaker 2: Congratulations. Raise the banner. Zero turnover. What are we doing?
[46:50] Speaker 4: Stop it.
[46:50] Speaker 2: Stop it.
[46:52] Speaker 4: God, I can't wait for the Eagles to come back
[46:54] Speaker 4: around next year. I cannot.
[46:56] Speaker 1: While we're here with the Bills, though, before I let
[46:58] Speaker 1: you go, this is the first show that I have done.
[47:01] Speaker 1: We were recording during the Terry Pegula press conference with
[47:07] Speaker 1: Brandon Bean. And so, look, I think it's fair to
[47:10] Speaker 1: say the wild part is I don't think McDermott getting
[47:12] Speaker 1: fired is nearly as egregious as a lot of people do,
[47:15] Speaker 1: especially since they've had terrible playoff defenses.
[47:17] Speaker 4: And that's his thing.
[47:19] Speaker 1: And how close he was to getting shit canned in
[47:21] Speaker 1: the last couple of years. I think we all recall that.
[47:23] Speaker 1: But it was the idea that none of us think
[47:25] Speaker 1: that roster is good enough. All of us think that
[47:27] Speaker 1: roster is too Josh Allen-centric. And from what we learned
[47:31] Speaker 1: from Tyler Dunn's series on McDermott a couple of years ago,
[47:34] Speaker 1: that's not really a McDermott is not a guy that
[47:37] Speaker 1: wants to just give the ball to his quarterback and
[47:39] Speaker 1: go say, go make the world happen. McDermott was a
[47:42] Speaker 1: assistant on the 2015 Panthers. And he saw Cam Newton
[47:45] Speaker 1: as being the problem. Like that's, that's the kind of
[47:48] Speaker 1: guy that we're dealing with there. But then they promoted
[47:51] Speaker 1: the GM to run the whole operation. And that's where
[47:55] Speaker 1: people are like, Hey, okay. So I feel like I
[47:59] Speaker 1: watched that press conference with Terry Pagula.
[48:00] Speaker 4: And if you didn't see it, go check it out.
[48:03] Speaker 1: And, I think all of us then had a certain
[48:07] Speaker 1: empathy for Josh Allen. At least those of us who
[48:10] Speaker 1: have ever worked for a moron before, because it appeared
[48:13] Speaker 1: that that team is being run by a moron.
[48:16] Speaker 3: I feel like Terry Pagula saw Steve Bishotti, the Ravens owner,
[48:19] Speaker 3: be like very blunt and get praised for it and thought,
[48:22] Speaker 3: let me cook. Because the Steve Bishotti presence was legitimately
[48:26] Speaker 3: one of the more entertaining presence I've seen from an owner.
[48:30] Speaker 3: And Steve Bishotti, by the way, wisely took his quarterback side. We,
[48:35] Speaker 3: I mean, that's a whole other conversation, but he chose,
[48:37] Speaker 3: he chose the quarterback. Uh, the, the, the craziest thing
[48:41] Speaker 3: about this. So I guess if you've been living under
[48:43] Speaker 3: rack and you missed it, the, the biggest moment that
[48:46] Speaker 3: is really just broken everyone. Like, I mean, I was
[48:50] Speaker 3: just like an incredible moment from an owner, uh, Brandon Beans.
[48:56] Speaker 2: Asked about the drafts. Terry Pagula is like, hold up.
[48:59] Speaker 2: I got something to say.
[49:01] Speaker 1: Notable, right?
[49:02] Speaker 3: Because he wasn't even asked about it. He was like, no,
[49:04] Speaker 3: the world needs to hear me. Brandon Bean didn't want
[49:07] Speaker 3: Keon Coleman, a wide receiver who was still on your
[49:10] Speaker 3: football team. The coaching staff did. So he simultaneously throws
[49:14] Speaker 3: Sean McDermott under the bus, his own wide receiver, Keon Coleman,
[49:18] Speaker 3: and the coaching staff who by the way, is still
[49:21] Speaker 3: like Joe Brady's being considered for your head coaching job.
[49:24] Speaker 3: It was one of the all time.
[49:26] Speaker 4: What?
[49:27] Speaker 3: Like, why are you talking moments from an owner that
[49:30] Speaker 3: I've ever seen?
[49:31] Speaker 2: And like, I, it's still an attractive job. You know,
[49:36] Speaker 2: you got Josh Allen, but like, who boy?
[49:39] Speaker 1: But with a player who just caught a touchdown in
[49:42] Speaker 1: this playoff game, by the way, who something is not
[49:46] Speaker 1: right there with him, obviously. And he seems to clearly
[49:48] Speaker 1: have struggles with self-confidence. And this ain't going to make
[49:51] Speaker 1: it better.
[49:53] Speaker 3: It's also just like I've seen Bill's fans. Well, you've
[49:55] Speaker 3: been you guys have been criticizing Keon Coleman.
[49:57] Speaker 2: I'm not his boss.
[50:01] Speaker 3: Can you imagine if like the head of your company
[50:04] Speaker 3: was like out there crap?
[50:05] Speaker 2: And it's so hard. It's not like. It's so easy
[50:09] Speaker 2: to say nothing.
[50:12] Speaker 4: Yeah. I'll say this though.
[50:15] Speaker 1: A big part of the Keon Coleman story and it
[50:18] Speaker 1: not working out. And of course, obviously I want it
[50:20] Speaker 1: to work out. He seems delightful, right? Like I think
[50:24] Speaker 1: we all had a, we want it to work out.
[50:27] Speaker 1: The issue with Coleman is who was next in the
[50:31] Speaker 1: draft and who was next was lab Matt Conkey and
[50:35] Speaker 1: Matt Conkey, Mac Conkey. I want to be very clear
[50:38] Speaker 1: of what I'm saying. Mac Conkey is great. He's been very,
[50:43] Speaker 1: very good with the Chargers. And what we got here
[50:47] Speaker 1: is not only did you not take a player that
[50:49] Speaker 1: was better, you didn't take a player that we all
[50:52] Speaker 1: know the Mafia would have loved. He'd have been a
[50:55] Speaker 1: made man in 18 months.
[50:58] Speaker 2: Josh Allen was throwing balls.
[51:02] Speaker 3: Go balls to Brandon cooks all season. Like it's not
[51:05] Speaker 3: just the Coleman thing. Brandon being like your entire, he,
[51:08] Speaker 3: I mean, has any sports radio clip aged worse than
[51:14] Speaker 3: Brandon being freaking out about being asked about the right
[51:16] Speaker 3: receiver group last season.
[51:18] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[51:18] Speaker 2: Like what?
[51:19] Speaker 3: And you, and immediately by the way, after this Coleman thing,
[51:22] Speaker 3: everybody's posting clips. Cause I guess they did some, I
[51:24] Speaker 3: don't know if it was hard knocks or whatever. Everybody's
[51:27] Speaker 3: posting clips of Brandon being talking about how bad they
[51:30] Speaker 3: wanted Keon Coleman.
[51:31] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[51:32] Speaker 2: So the whole thing stinks, honestly. It stinks.
[51:37] Speaker 3: I guess if I had to give him one piece
[51:41] Speaker 3: of praise, Terry Pagula, most owners would have just leaked
[51:45] Speaker 3: that to an insider.
[51:47] Speaker 5: Yes.
[51:47] Speaker 3: At least he said it with his chest. But it
[51:51] Speaker 3: still stinks. And if you're a fan, you should be
[51:52] Speaker 3: upset about it.
[51:53] Speaker 1: Terry Pagula played a role in firing Sean McDermott, who
[51:59] Speaker 1: won five. AFC East in a row, and then they
[52:02] Speaker 1: went to the playoffs again this year. And also James Franklin,
[52:05] Speaker 1: because he's the money behind Penn State football. Like, he's
[52:09] Speaker 1: fired a couple of pretty good coaches. That it was
[52:12] Speaker 1: understandable why you would fire them, but shit better work
[52:15] Speaker 1: on the other end.
[52:17] Speaker 3: I don't know anything about hockey, but Sabres fans seem
[52:19] Speaker 3: to despise him.
[52:21] Speaker 1: He appears to be similar to Jim Dolan, in that
[52:25] Speaker 1: Jim Dolan is a terrible, or has been a fairly
[52:28] Speaker 1: terrible owner for the Knicks, but not as bad with
[52:31] Speaker 1: the Rangers.
[52:32] Speaker 2: Okay.
[52:33] Speaker 4: And it seems to go kind of in the opposite
[52:35] Speaker 4: order on this one.
[52:36] Speaker 5: Right.
[52:36] Speaker 1: But yeah, Sabres fans seem to, it is fascinating to
[52:39] Speaker 1: me when that happens, where the fan bases have these
[52:42] Speaker 1: like divergent opinions of the same person.
[52:45] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[52:46] Speaker 2: That's funny.
[52:46] Speaker 3: I was, Alan was like that for a little bit
[52:49] Speaker 3: with the Blazers and Seahawks. I look, yeah, the, I don't,
[52:56] Speaker 3: I think firing McDermott was a great injustice for the
[52:59] Speaker 3: reasons you described.
[53:00] Speaker 2: I thought the timing was very weird. And then, of course,
[53:02] Speaker 2: coupled with the bean promotion, it was odd.
[53:04] Speaker 3: But the last thing I'll say on the matter is this.
[53:07] Speaker 3: Who are you going to hire? Like, that's the other thing, right?
[53:12] Speaker 3: Because I think the best coaches are defensive. And I
[53:14] Speaker 3: don't think they're going to replace them with a defensive guy.
[53:16] Speaker 2: I could be wrong. Offensive. I mean, there's a lot
[53:20] Speaker 2: of heat around Brian Dable coming back.
[53:22] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's insane to me.
[53:26] Speaker 3: Or Joe Brady being, first of all, the Brian Dable
[53:28] Speaker 3: thing just feels like a pure nostalgia play. Like, oh,
[53:30] Speaker 3: I remember when we were on the rise.
[53:32] Speaker 2: And we were fun.
[53:33] Speaker 4: Okay.
[53:35] Speaker 3: I remember when you guys got, you know, like, whatever, anyways.
[53:39] Speaker 3: But there's not good offensive options out there.
[53:43] Speaker 1: I mean, I will make this point, and I was
[53:45] Speaker 1: thinking about this when we talk about, like, Allen being
[53:48] Speaker 1: rated higher than Lamar when they do these polls or whatever.
[53:51] Speaker 1: I would love to see those broken down by offensive
[53:54] Speaker 1: coaches and defensive coaches because I have always felt like
[53:56] Speaker 1: defensive coaches, look at them quarterbacks, like that can move
[53:59] Speaker 1: as a much more terrifying situation because you have to
[54:02] Speaker 1: think about more things. You know, Allen is a hybrid
[54:05] Speaker 1: of sorts in this discussion. But I always think the
[54:08] Speaker 1: defensive guys are the ones that are like, no, no, no,
[54:11] Speaker 1: I can work with something there. Or you hire a
[54:13] Speaker 1: defensive guy and you can wind up with something like
[54:15] Speaker 1: Tony Dungy where you make your offensive coordinator like the
[54:17] Speaker 1: head coach of offense.
[54:19] Speaker 4: And then he can just.
[54:19] Speaker 1: Worry about, let him worry about how to hold this
[54:22] Speaker 1: lead that our quarterback winds up getting.
[54:24] Speaker 4: I mean, they just had nine years of McDermott.
[54:26] Speaker 1: So if you go back to a defensive guy, I
[54:28] Speaker 1: don't feel like you're in a bad case if you
[54:30] Speaker 1: can go find who the right young offensive guy is.
[54:33] Speaker 2: You know what's so interesting?
[54:34] Speaker 3: Because you're absolutely right about that distinction. When I talk
[54:36] Speaker 3: to defensive coaches, they really hate mobile quarterbacks. But then
[54:40] Speaker 3: when I talk to defensive players, they really hate pocket passers.
[54:44] Speaker 3: I find that so interesting. It might be more of
[54:47] Speaker 3: like a like, the defensive coordinator is like, I can.
[54:50] Speaker 2: Plan for this. I can't plan for that.
[54:52] Speaker 3: Whereas the players like the perfect pass is just going
[54:54] Speaker 3: to kill, you know, but I always found that really interesting.
[54:57] Speaker 3: It was why like when Harbaugh lost his job, I
[55:01] Speaker 3: mentioned Flores because Flores had the Brian Flores in Minnesota
[55:06] Speaker 3: had all those quotes talking about how like unbelievable Lamar
[55:08] Speaker 3: Jackson was, but he's obviously not alone in that sentiment.
[55:12] Speaker 4: By the way, I just like to make it clear
[55:13] Speaker 4: to everybody.
[55:14] Speaker 1: The league is telling us this year, that Brian Flores
[55:16] Speaker 1: is going to be the head coach of the defense
[55:18] Speaker 1: for the rest of his career in the NFL.
[55:21] Speaker 2: They gave him an attention, right?
[55:23] Speaker 4: They did.
[55:23] Speaker 2: I saw that.
[55:24] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[55:24] Speaker 4: They did. You know what he's going to be?
[55:26] Speaker 1: He's going to be a Rooney Rule all-star. He's going
[55:28] Speaker 1: to get all these frequent flyer miles jumping on planes
[55:31] Speaker 1: for in-person interviews so they could do this. Can I
[55:35] Speaker 1: say something on that right fast? Because I normally do
[55:37] Speaker 1: a long Rooney Rule thing, but I haven't done it,
[55:39] Speaker 1: so I'm going to do this with you here. Just
[55:40] Speaker 1: something to bring up. And I saw somebody, I think
[55:43] Speaker 1: it was Albert Breer, and I don't want to I
[55:45] Speaker 1: probably shouldn't even say that because I don't want to
[55:47] Speaker 1: single him out because it's unfair because he's not the
[55:49] Speaker 1: only person who does this. But when people report that
[55:52] Speaker 1: a team has interviewed the two guys and then they
[55:57] Speaker 1: say they have satisfied the requirement and now they are
[55:59] Speaker 1: free to interview who they so choose, you're doing a
[56:02] Speaker 1: disservice to the whole process when you do that because
[56:05] Speaker 1: what you're saying is you're treating interviewing black candidates simply
[56:09] Speaker 1: as an obligation and not even entertaining the possibility that
[56:12] Speaker 1: maybe just maybe these are qualified people, right? Or maybe
[56:14] Speaker 1: just maybe this is what a team actually wants to do. Now,
[56:17] Speaker 1: do the teams deserve the benefit of the doubt?
[56:19] Speaker 4: Not necessarily.
[56:21] Speaker 1: But, like, continuing to say it as though this is
[56:23] Speaker 1: just some nuisance that you got to deal with before
[56:25] Speaker 1: you actually start looking for a coach, that's bad business
[56:28] Speaker 1: for everybody.
[56:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, I.
[56:31] Speaker 3: I've been so like beaten down on this topic, right? Like,
[56:34] Speaker 3: I feel like I used to, I used to be
[56:37] Speaker 3: more like pointing out the obvious, you know, like when
[56:42] Speaker 3: teams are skirting it and whatnot.
[56:43] Speaker 2: I think the rule itself just appears to be so
[56:49] Speaker 2: fundamentally broken now in terms, and also the way it's
[56:51] Speaker 2: reported and discussed that it's like, I can't even like, I, right. Like,
[56:56] Speaker 2: What am I going to say? Well, they skirted it.
[56:58] Speaker 3: Well, if they were never going to hire him in
[56:59] Speaker 3: the first place, am I really going to be outraged
[57:01] Speaker 3: that they didn't do the interviews and such? It feels
[57:07] Speaker 3: like it's not doing its job anymore, but I don't.
[57:11] Speaker 4: Think people are.
[57:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, my thing is the rule isn't the problem. The
[57:14] Speaker 1: problem is these people. And we need to keep staying
[57:18] Speaker 1: on the necks of these people. They're the ones that's coming.
[57:22] Speaker 1: If the people weren't a problem, we wouldn't have no rule.
[57:24] Speaker 1: You get rid of the rule, we still going to
[57:26] Speaker 1: have the same people be the same problem. And look,
[57:29] Speaker 1: who knows? All this forcing you to interview these people
[57:33] Speaker 1: and maybe just maybe you might find a good coach.
[57:36] Speaker 1: Nobody wins more from the Rooney Rule than the teams.
[57:40] Speaker 2: I think each owner should do pressers more, though, because
[57:43] Speaker 2: it's good for the public to see what we're dealing with.
[57:46] Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
[57:47] Speaker 1: But hey, we got Mina Combs here. Check her out
[57:50] Speaker 1: on the Mina Combs show with Lenny and all over
[57:53] Speaker 1: various ESPN properties.
[57:55] Speaker 4: I appreciate you, ma'am.
[57:57] Speaker 3: It's good to see you, bud. Sorry I won't see
[57:58] Speaker 3: you in San Francisco.
[58:00] Speaker 4: Likewise.
[58:01] Speaker 1: Next time you get around here, I talk about this
[58:03] Speaker 1: with Dominique, the problem with living in New York is
[58:05] Speaker 1: everybody got like a 20-person list.
[58:07] Speaker 4: In New York.
[58:07] Speaker 1: You get your one a year when somebody comes to
[58:10] Speaker 1: New York all the time.
[58:13] Speaker 5: All right, Bo, three quick questions sponsored by FanDuel. We
[58:16] Speaker 5: got three massive NBA games this weekend. New York Knicks
[58:20] Speaker 5: taking on the Philadelphia 76ers. Knicks have been in free-for-all recently,
[58:24] Speaker 5: losing 11 of their last 14 games. What do you
[58:27] Speaker 5: make of what's going on with the Knicks?
[58:29] Speaker 1: I think the most interesting thing with the Knicks is
[58:31] Speaker 1: now we're getting the reports of, I don't know my role.
[58:34] Speaker 4: I don't know if I like playing for Mike Brown.
[58:36] Speaker 1: And all of us was out here campaigning for their
[58:38] Speaker 1: legs when they were playing with Tibbs, right? Like, no,
[58:41] Speaker 1: somebody needs to look out for you. And they were like,
[58:43] Speaker 1: I don't know. We kind of like playing a zillion minutes.
[58:45] Speaker 1: And now this has happened. Bottom line is what is
[58:48] Speaker 1: happening with them. And I don't know if it's fair
[58:51] Speaker 1: to the protagonist in the point I'm about to make,
[58:53] Speaker 1: but I told y'all that eventually y'all was going to
[58:55] Speaker 1: get tired of the Carl Towns experience. And he is
[58:57] Speaker 1: wildly talented. And you soak that up in the first
[59:00] Speaker 1: year and then everything you don't like about him, you
[59:02] Speaker 1: notice that in the second year. And that seems to
[59:04] Speaker 1: be what's happening here. I also think that even with
[59:07] Speaker 1: that free fall, they can still win the East when
[59:10] Speaker 1: it's all said and done.
[59:12] Speaker 5: Right. I mean, the ultimate listen to me now, believe
[59:15] Speaker 5: me later on is the Carl Anthony Townsend.
[59:17] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[59:18] Speaker 4: Yeah. And I know how it went.
[59:19] Speaker 1: But I mean, I think what really makes it bad
[59:21] Speaker 1: for the Knicks this year is the fact that the
[59:23] Speaker 1: Celtics don't have Jason Tatum and somehow are still second
[59:26] Speaker 1: in the East.
[59:26] Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
[59:27] Speaker 1: Like you looked around and you said to yourself, if
[59:29] Speaker 1: you're the Knicks, there's nothing to stop us this year.
[59:31] Speaker 1: And the Celtics are like, y'all still ain't even better
[59:33] Speaker 1: than us. Right.
[59:34] Speaker 5: All right. After that, we got Golden State taking on Minnesota. Obviously,
[59:39] Speaker 5: Jimmy Butler went down earlier this week with a torn ACL.
[59:41] Speaker 5: He's going to miss the rest of the season. What
[59:43] Speaker 5: should the Warriors do with another season looks like in
[59:47] Speaker 5: the tubes?
[59:48] Speaker 1: I mean, it looks like their plan is to keep
[59:50] Speaker 1: Jimmy and hope that he comes off the injury next
[59:53] Speaker 1: year around this time and gives them a jolt similar
[59:57] Speaker 1: to the jolt that they got when they traded for
[59:59] Speaker 1: Jimmy right at the trade deadline. That seems to be
[1:00:01] Speaker 1: an ambitious ask of a guy his age coming off
[1:00:05] Speaker 1: an injury like this and somebody who's been physically slowing down. But, Ryan,
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen this, man. They are
[1:00:12] Speaker 1: so much better when he's on the court than without. Like,
[1:00:14] Speaker 1: I think he has their best on-off plus-minus numbers on
[1:00:18] Speaker 1: the whole roster. Like, he is the great player that people,
[1:00:22] Speaker 1: for some reason, don't want to truly acknowledge his greatness
[1:00:25] Speaker 1: and the impact that he has on the roster that
[1:00:27] Speaker 1: he's been on. But if that's the plan, then I
[1:00:30] Speaker 1: don't know what they're supposed to do other than just
[1:00:31] Speaker 1: try to have a good time this year. Right.
[1:00:33] Speaker 5: I mean, Steph is still performing at a high level,
[1:00:36] Speaker 5: even at his advanced age. but I mean, it's, it's
[1:00:39] Speaker 5: almost turning into like Kobe's last few seasons, the Lakers. Yeah.
[1:00:44] Speaker 1: Well, well, nothing will be that bad because you've heard
[1:00:48] Speaker 1: of these other guys that are on this team and
[1:00:50] Speaker 1: he's got so much more left than, uh, than Kobe
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: does at this point. But this, it's been a really
[1:00:57] Speaker 1: interesting four years since that last championship and that championship
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: they won was kind of a, somebody has to win
[1:01:03] Speaker 1: it this year.
[1:01:04] Speaker 5: Right.
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: Um, we're learning a lot about Steph Curry and his
[1:01:10] Speaker 1: capacity for loyalty. Cause just about everybody else would ask
[1:01:12] Speaker 1: to bail on this. And I, by the way, I
[1:01:14] Speaker 1: think him not bailing is the right decision.
[1:01:16] Speaker 5: Right.
[1:01:16] Speaker 1: But I think most people would have bailed.
[1:01:18] Speaker 5: For sure. And finally, the Lakers are taking on the Mavericks.
[1:01:22] Speaker 5: Lakers have been up and down over the last month.
[1:01:25] Speaker 5: Ron starting to run in the form. Do you believe
[1:01:28] Speaker 5: in the Lakers and the reason and their championship aspirations?
[1:01:33] Speaker 1: Oh, no, absolutely not. Your three best players can't guard anybody.
[1:01:36] Speaker 1: Their record is 26 and 16. They are fifth in
[1:01:40] Speaker 1: the West and their point differential is negative, which is
[1:01:44] Speaker 1: to say they have given up more points than they
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: have scored. They, I mean, their record is not in
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: line with what the actual point results have been.
[1:01:54] Speaker 4: I believe that this is going to go down.
[1:01:56] Speaker 1: And then from there, how well JJ Redick holds it
[1:01:59] Speaker 1: together for this team and how well he holds it
[1:02:01] Speaker 1: together for JJ Redick.
[1:02:02] Speaker 4: Like this is going to be a lot, man.
[1:02:03] Speaker 1: Like they've, I've never seen a team that was expected
[1:02:07] Speaker 1: to be any good who gets a less defense from
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: the centerpieces of the roster.
[1:02:11] Speaker 4: Never seen anything like, right.
[1:02:13] Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, we have another trade down only coming
[1:02:15] Speaker 5: in less than two weeks, which we're about due for
[1:02:18] Speaker 5: a passive aggressive LeBron texture, you know, tweet about that time.
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: Hey, look, man, I'll take that over his air sniper
[1:02:29] Speaker 1: shoes that I can't believe he thought that was a
[1:02:32] Speaker 1: good idea.
[1:02:33] Speaker 4: I can't believe it. We'll talk to you guys in
[1:02:55] Speaker 4: a couple of days. Take it easy.
