[0:05] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
[0:09] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
[0:11] Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:15] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:18] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:20] Speaker 1: a hater. It's a bonus episode for you. We're going
[0:23] Speaker 1: to talk a little NBA in just a moment. Also
[0:26] Speaker 1: take your voicemails. So Monday night, the Chiefs played against
[0:31] Speaker 1: the Jaguars. And I got to tell you, man, it
[0:34] Speaker 1: was really looking like the Chiefs were heading right back
[0:36] Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl until they fuck around and lost.
[0:41] Speaker 1: I don't really know any other way to put that.
[0:45] Speaker 1: The Mahomes pick six, for example, that was, oh man,
[0:48] Speaker 1: fucking around, man.
[0:49] Speaker 2: Just got caught up in that.
[0:51] Speaker 1: It looked, and Ryan, you tell me if I'm crazy, man,
[0:53] Speaker 1: but it was looking like the Chiefs of your youth
[0:57] Speaker 1: a little early there.
[0:58] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you get out to early 14-point lead
[1:03] Speaker 3: Mahomes is throwing the ball over the field. Xavier Worthy
[1:06] Speaker 3: is looking good. And this is the exact sort of
[1:08] Speaker 3: game they won every time last year and seem to
[1:12] Speaker 3: lose every time this year. Yes.
[1:14] Speaker 1: Now, I want you to tell me what you think
[1:15] Speaker 1: about this right fast, because I think that we've talked
[1:17] Speaker 1: a lot about the Chiefs and the lack of weaponry
[1:21] Speaker 1: that they had given Mahomes over time.
[1:22] Speaker 2: And I think that that's fair.
[1:23] Speaker 1: But either Taequann Thornton, Hollywood Brown or Xavier Worthy is
[1:29] Speaker 1: going to be the number three receiver.
[1:31] Speaker 2: For this team.
[1:32] Speaker 1: That to me sounds like a very good receiving core.
[1:34] Speaker 3: I knew you have to remember after in two weeks,
[1:36] Speaker 3: they're getting Rasheed Rice back.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
[1:38] Speaker 1: And once every month or so, you'll probably get a
[1:42] Speaker 1: good game out of Travis Kelsey. They got a touchdown
[1:44] Speaker 1: last night. In fact, and that's no, he just, oh man,
[1:47] Speaker 1: like it amazes me how we just completely ignored it.
[1:50] Speaker 1: These cats get old.
[1:52] Speaker 3: He's one of the like five or six NFL players
[1:55] Speaker 3: older than me.
[1:56] Speaker 4: Yes.
[1:57] Speaker 5: Yes.
[1:58] Speaker 2: How about this? If I'm not mistaken, He's older than Gronk.
[2:02] Speaker 3: They're almost exactly the same age. And Gronk is almost
[2:06] Speaker 3: about to be eligible for the Hall of Fame.
[2:07] Speaker 2: That's exactly what I was about to say.
[2:08] Speaker 3: He retired twice.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's going to be in the Hall of Fame.
[2:10] Speaker 1: If he had stuck out the first retirement, right?
[2:14] Speaker 3: He'd be in the Hall of Fame.
[2:15] Speaker 1: If he came back in 2020, he would be in
[2:16] Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame. And Travis Kelsey is still playing football. Now,
[2:20] Speaker 1: also of note, Rob Gronkowski played like three, four seasons
[2:24] Speaker 1: before Travis Kelsey caught a pass.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, because he came out super early, right?
[2:31] Speaker 2: He came out young.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Kelsey was in school as an older guy and then
[2:37] Speaker 1: missed the first season with an injury, right? So we
[2:40] Speaker 1: get these weird quirks. But anyway, the other thing that
[2:43] Speaker 1: was like, damn, the Chiefs just got fucked around and lost. Travis,
[2:47] Speaker 1: not Travis, Trevor Lawrence. It's one thing when I call
[2:51] Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Jefferson, because Jordan Jefferson is his brother.
[2:54] Speaker 2: That's who we met first.
[2:55] Speaker 1: But if I call Trevor Lawrence, Travis Lawrence, that, that,
[2:59] Speaker 1: I mean, my dad wouldn't even do that. But anyway,
[3:04] Speaker 1: if you did not see the touchdown where the Jaguars
[3:08] Speaker 1: won this game, Trevor Lawrence, one of his two rushing touchdowns,
[3:12] Speaker 1: by the way, Trevor Lawrence drops back and falls down.
[3:19] Speaker 2: Dropping back. But nobody touched him.
[3:23] Speaker 1: And so he gets up and it's kind of a
[3:26] Speaker 1: chaotic scramble. It doesn't appear that he even bothered to
[3:29] Speaker 1: look to see if perhaps there was a pass for
[3:31] Speaker 1: him to throw. He got up and I mean, Trevor
[3:35] Speaker 1: Lawrence is a fairly athletic chap, but I mean, he's
[3:40] Speaker 1: not Michael Vick. He got up and he put everything
[3:44] Speaker 1: together and he went in and he scored a touchdown.
[3:48] Speaker 1: And I don't know if anybody on the internet has
[3:51] Speaker 1: put any music to that video. Back when you could
[3:55] Speaker 1: talk about Kanye in front of people, it was the
[3:58] Speaker 1: father stretched my hands joint for those kinds of things.
[4:02] Speaker 1: If you wanted to go real old school, because I
[4:11] Speaker 1: need some ironic triumphant music for what went on. I don't,
[4:17] Speaker 1: you know, I'm a younger sibling and therefore you have
[4:21] Speaker 1: different kinds of events and things that happen in your
[4:23] Speaker 1: life as a younger sibling. And every now and then
[4:27] Speaker 1: you got to like, try to run away.
[4:30] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[4:31] Speaker 1: Like my siblings are way older, so they was never
[4:33] Speaker 1: going to do anything terrible to me. But at the
[4:35] Speaker 1: same time, you don't really know this. And when you
[4:38] Speaker 1: running away, when you fall down and have to get up,
[4:43] Speaker 1: it feels like you're moving like molasses trying to get
[4:47] Speaker 1: it back together because the stakes are so high. It's
[4:50] Speaker 1: not even so much about how fast you're actually moving.
[4:53] Speaker 1: It's about everything relative to the sphere of the world
[4:56] Speaker 1: that you happen to be in in that moment. I
[5:00] Speaker 1: cannot imagine how panicked and terrified and how slowly Trevor
[5:05] Speaker 1: Lawrence felt like he was moving when he was trying
[5:08] Speaker 1: to get up after falling down.
[5:09] Speaker 2: Because I don't care what nobody say.
[5:12] Speaker 1: I can't imagine having to go back into that locker
[5:14] Speaker 1: room having to say, sorry about that, fellas.
[5:16] Speaker 2: I just tripped over my shoelaces. I'll make sure I
[5:18] Speaker 2: tie them next time.
[5:21] Speaker 1: We got a chance to go out here and win
[5:22] Speaker 1: the game right now. And we don't win it because
[5:24] Speaker 1: I feel down. Now, on the other hand, imagine what
[5:29] Speaker 1: it's like being any of those Kansas City Chiefs who
[5:33] Speaker 1: have now realized that Trevor Lawrence has fallen down and
[5:38] Speaker 1: it might.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Be your chance to be a hero, to go make
[5:42] Speaker 4: that move. But what if you made that move and
[5:46] Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence got up and he ran right where you
[5:49] Speaker 4: were supposed to be, but you thought you had your chance?
[5:54] Speaker 4: I could just see thought bubbles for everybody in that
[5:57] Speaker 4: moment as it happens.
[6:00] Speaker 1: And then Trevor Lawrence scores the touchdown. And then Trevor
[6:03] Speaker 1: Lawrence thought bubble turns into had it all the way.
[6:08] Speaker 1: And the Chiefs thought bubbles turn to, damn, maybe we
[6:13] Speaker 1: not going to make the playoffs.
[6:14] Speaker 2: Like, Ryan, you think they're going to make the playoffs?
[6:17] Speaker 3: I do. I just, they have a tough schedule, but
[6:21] Speaker 3: the AFC is bad. there, there's a lot of teams
[6:25] Speaker 3: you can almost go through and cross off already. We're not,
[6:28] Speaker 3: we're not even to, you know, well, this is starting
[6:31] Speaker 3: to start getting into the holidays of October yet, but
[6:34] Speaker 3: I mean, it is, yeah. I mean, do you believe,
[6:36] Speaker 3: do you like, even in that own division, do you
[6:38] Speaker 3: believe in the chargers? No offensive linemen. Do you believe
[6:41] Speaker 3: in Bo Nix?
[6:43] Speaker 1: You got, you hit, you hit it right there. That's
[6:45] Speaker 1: what I was about to say. We're talking about whether
[6:48] Speaker 1: or not they're going to go to the playoffs.
[6:49] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[6:50] Speaker 2: If you watched the chargers play Washington, yeah.
[6:54] Speaker 1: On Sunday, you feel like the Chiefs are going to
[6:57] Speaker 1: win the division.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Right.
[6:58] Speaker 1: And by the way, in spite of going on the
[7:02] Speaker 1: road and beating the Eagles and scoring 18 points in
[7:05] Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, I do not think there was very
[7:08] Speaker 1: much encouraging that came out of that, to me at least.
[7:12] Speaker 2: For Broncos-Eagles.
[7:13] Speaker 1: Like, I felt like the Eagles lost that game, but
[7:16] Speaker 1: I did not come away from that thinking, oh, okay,
[7:18] Speaker 1: maybe I've been wrong about the Broncos, and I damn
[7:20] Speaker 1: sure didn't come away from it feeling like I was
[7:22] Speaker 1: wrong about Bo Nix. Like, I'm out here having to
[7:25] Speaker 1: try to, you know, entertain some possibilities with Baker Mayfield
[7:29] Speaker 1: and Sam Darnold.
[7:30] Speaker 2: I still cannot believe they have played their way out
[7:32] Speaker 2: of Journeyman.
[7:33] Speaker 1: Even Geno Smith didn't really play his way out of
[7:36] Speaker 1: Journeyman because he went on another journey right after he had, like.
[7:39] Speaker 2: Got, and now he out here looking like the Journeyman.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Journey might be over soon.
[7:43] Speaker 2: I say the end of the end of the road
[7:45] Speaker 2: is what it's looking like over there right now.
[7:47] Speaker 1: And I think that's just because he's like, dude, I
[7:48] Speaker 1: play with bums and I got to somebody got to
[7:51] Speaker 1: do something. I feel like he I feel like he
[7:52] Speaker 1: taking one for the team right now because I can't
[7:54] Speaker 1: see how he got so bad so fast after being
[7:57] Speaker 1: I thought very good last year.
[7:59] Speaker 3: I mean, Bo Nix falls into, I think, where you
[8:02] Speaker 3: and I have a similar bias, which is players who
[8:05] Speaker 3: are not good in the SEC.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Yes. That's it.
[8:11] Speaker 1: I saw him be not good for those whole three years.
[8:15] Speaker 2: Bo Nix is as old as Travis Kelsey. I hope
[8:17] Speaker 2: he figures some shit out by now.
[8:19] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[8:20] Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. There are.
[8:22] Speaker 3: Bo Nix is old enough. We need to keep him
[8:24] Speaker 3: away from Mark Sanchez.
[8:25] Speaker 1: Yo, there's something very interesting that happens when you watch
[8:28] Speaker 1: a guy play too much college football. Like, I think
[8:31] Speaker 1: for real this happened with Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman. Like,
[8:34] Speaker 1: they drafted Troy Aikman with the number one pick and
[8:36] Speaker 1: then drafted Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft a couple
[8:39] Speaker 1: of months after that because Jimmy's boys broke Troy's leg.
[8:43] Speaker 2: Right? In that game.
[8:44] Speaker 1: And Jimmy had been watching Troy since he was in
[8:46] Speaker 1: high school because Jimmy coached at Oklahoma State.
[8:48] Speaker 3: You know too much.
[8:49] Speaker 1: I think he knew too much. But I don't think
[8:51] Speaker 1: we're wrong in this about Bo Nix. Like every now
[8:54] Speaker 1: and then I see Bo Nix make like a flash play.
[8:57] Speaker 1: But what I think Bo Nix is when it really
[8:59] Speaker 1: comes down to it, he has an offensive genius head
[9:04] Speaker 1: coach who I think believes that his system can figure
[9:09] Speaker 1: out what to do with a quarterback if they have
[9:11] Speaker 1: insert traits here. And Bo Nix has those traits, and
[9:15] Speaker 1: he thinks that, okay, we can work this out in
[9:17] Speaker 1: what I do.
[9:18] Speaker 3: And you hear Sean Payton talk about what he liked
[9:20] Speaker 3: about Bo Nix so much. He said he didn't turn
[9:22] Speaker 3: the ball over and take sacks, which is code speak
[9:25] Speaker 3: for he does what I'll tell him to do.
[9:27] Speaker 2: He does what I'll tell him to do, but let's
[9:28] Speaker 2: be honest about this.
[9:32] Speaker 1: Drew Brees is the highest echelon system quarterback ever. like
[9:38] Speaker 1: he got it together at the end in San Diego
[9:41] Speaker 1: right I don't want to pretend like he didn't and
[9:43] Speaker 1: I think it was running a North Turner offense like
[9:45] Speaker 1: getting toward the end too so I don't want to
[9:46] Speaker 1: pretend like he never had anything going to San Diego
[9:48] Speaker 1: right but go look at the offense Drew Brees ran
[9:52] Speaker 1: at Purdue go look how it started in the NFL
[9:56] Speaker 1: where it was so bad that he won comeback player
[9:58] Speaker 1: of the year in 2004 and the wasn't an injury.
[10:01] Speaker 1: And then go look at what it was when he
[10:03] Speaker 1: got with Sean Payton. That Sean Payton offense that he
[10:05] Speaker 1: was running looked a lot like what they were doing
[10:07] Speaker 1: at Purdue, which is a super-duper system quarterback offense. That's
[10:11] Speaker 1: not shade to Drew Brees. He is a no-brainer Hall
[10:14] Speaker 1: of Famer who somehow figured out how to make his
[10:17] Speaker 1: neck longer. There's no way his neck was always that long.
[10:22] Speaker 3: I mean, here's the thing. Every quarterback who is under
[10:26] Speaker 3: 6'2 is a system quarterback.
[10:28] Speaker 2: Or super athlete.
[10:29] Speaker 3: Or super, super athlete, yes.
[10:31] Speaker 6: Right.
[10:31] Speaker 1: But Drew Brees is out there on his toenails with
[10:34] Speaker 1: his neck all the way up, looking over the lines
[10:37] Speaker 1: and making it happen. And so I think with Bo Nix,
[10:39] Speaker 1: Sean Payton sees a guy like, oh, if he'll just
[10:41] Speaker 1: do what I tell him, then we can make everything work.
[10:44] Speaker 1: But to get that back to the Chiefs, the way
[10:46] Speaker 1: things are stacking up for the Chiefs right now, them
[10:49] Speaker 1: going to the playoffs, yeah, they're going to the playoffs.
[10:52] Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead and say it right now.
[10:55] Speaker 2: They're going to win this. the AFC West. That's right.
[11:00] Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if they're going to have the
[11:03] Speaker 1: number one overall seed. That appears to be.
[11:10] Speaker 2: The Indianapolis Colts.
[11:15] Speaker 3: You get to play the Titans twice. You know, that helps.
[11:18] Speaker 1: Titans twice, Texans twice, and honestly, you could do worse
[11:22] Speaker 1: than a couple of games against the Jags.
[11:24] Speaker 5: Right?
[11:25] Speaker 1: But no, look, I mean, How do you feel about
[11:28] Speaker 1: the fact that Buffalo can't stop nobody from running the ball?
[11:31] Speaker 3: And also, I mean, we thought, you know, Bill's Ravens
[11:34] Speaker 3: opening Sunday night of the season was a match between
[11:37] Speaker 3: two Titans.
[11:38] Speaker 2: No, it was not.
[11:39] Speaker 3: And it turns out the Ravens are not, you know,
[11:42] Speaker 3: the juggernauts we thought they were.
[11:43] Speaker 2: Well, hold on.
[11:43] Speaker 1: To be fair, though, the version of the Ravens that
[11:46] Speaker 1: we see now is not the version of the Ravens that.
[11:49] Speaker 3: I mean, the offense is... you know, the, but that
[11:53] Speaker 3: defense is obviously.
[11:54] Speaker 2: The defense is Chiefs.
[11:55] Speaker 3: You are correct.
[11:55] Speaker 6: You're right.
[11:56] Speaker 2: You, you are right. They are right.
[11:57] Speaker 1: They, they, the Chiefs have taken charitable contributions. I mean,
[12:00] Speaker 1: that Chiefs, the Ravens, they're taking the Chiefs too, but
[12:02] Speaker 1: they're taking them charitable contributions on defense. You are correct,
[12:04] Speaker 1: but there's nothing. The bright side for the Chiefs is
[12:07] Speaker 1: there's nothing that says that you can't come out of
[12:09] Speaker 1: that conference.
[12:11] Speaker 2: Nothing at all.
[12:11] Speaker 1: And it's interesting that you mentioned the idea that the
[12:13] Speaker 1: AFC isn't good because this is I forget who I
[12:17] Speaker 1: saw mentioned this online many months ago, but this is
[12:19] Speaker 1: becoming a mirroring of the 80s and 90s where the
[12:22] Speaker 1: AFC has the quarterbacks, but the NFC has the teams.
[12:26] Speaker 1: Like all the top notch quarterbacks that we talk about
[12:30] Speaker 1: in the league, they all play in the AFC. Who's
[12:33] Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the NFC? I mean, the quarterback
[12:36] Speaker 1: playing the best in the NFC this year is Dak Prescott.
[12:39] Speaker 1: But if you were just to go through the NFC
[12:40] Speaker 1: and say, what quarterback are you giving me off of
[12:43] Speaker 1: these teams?
[12:44] Speaker 2: What's the one you're taking? Is it possibly Stafford?
[12:49] Speaker 3: It's Stafford by reputation and Hurts by accomplishments.
[12:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, and yeah, I mean, go up and down. Go
[12:58] Speaker 2: up and down.
[12:58] Speaker 1: It's a weird, weird conference when they start talking about
[13:01] Speaker 1: who the quarterbacks are, and what you can get out
[13:03] Speaker 1: of them.
[13:03] Speaker 2: Is it Baker Mayfield?
[13:05] Speaker 3: I was going to say, I thought when you said
[13:06] Speaker 3: playing the best, I think you could make an argument.
[13:09] Speaker 6: You could.
[13:10] Speaker 3: It's Baker, but I mean, they're a weird team. They're
[13:13] Speaker 3: 4-1 and have a negative DVOA, which is almost impossible.
[13:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, for everybody to know what that means, that's bad.
[13:21] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's an advanced stat that says TLDR, you're not
[13:25] Speaker 3: very good.
[13:26] Speaker 1: And so for people who have heard of what DVOA
[13:29] Speaker 1: is and don't understand it, I think that this is
[13:31] Speaker 1: the easiest synopsis.
[13:32] Speaker 2: It's actually a really interesting statistic.
[13:34] Speaker 1: So the way DVOA works is it takes a measure
[13:38] Speaker 1: of every play But the measure is based on how
[13:42] Speaker 1: many yards you had to go to get the first down.
[13:44] Speaker 1: So that way, a 15-yard pass on first and 10
[13:49] Speaker 1: is not treated the same as a 15-yard pass on
[13:52] Speaker 1: third and 18, where they're in cover three and they're
[13:55] Speaker 1: letting you have everything in front of you as long
[13:57] Speaker 1: as you don't get the first down, right? So it
[14:00] Speaker 1: puts the context of the situation and the evaluation of
[14:03] Speaker 1: every play, which is to say, per play, Tampa Bay
[14:06] Speaker 1: is living that negative life. That's what they're saying. So
[14:11] Speaker 1: all of this happens and say you get the Kansas
[14:13] Speaker 1: City Chiefs and you get them in the playoffs and
[14:16] Speaker 1: you still have the best quarterback that I have ever
[14:18] Speaker 1: seen who will probably have three or four very good receivers.
[14:24] Speaker 2: By the time it comes back, by the time that
[14:26] Speaker 2: we get there.
[14:27] Speaker 1: If they figure anything out on defense, nothing that is
[14:31] Speaker 1: happening right now really matters.
[14:34] Speaker 2: Now that being said, Ryan.
[14:36] Speaker 1: The version of the Ravens that they got to play against,
[14:39] Speaker 1: was worse than the version of the Ravens that the
[14:41] Speaker 1: Bills got to play against. And that is doing a
[14:44] Speaker 1: lot to bolster a lot of what the Chiefs got going.
[14:47] Speaker 3: I mean, even if the Chiefs don't win the division,
[14:50] Speaker 3: you're going to probably be playing whoever wins the AFC North,
[14:53] Speaker 3: which is either going to be Aaron Rodgers after his
[14:57] Speaker 3: 42nd birthday or whatever the Ravens are at this point.
[15:01] Speaker 1: By the way, we will wrap on this. The Baltimore
[15:05] Speaker 1: Ravens have played five games. Do you know how many
[15:10] Speaker 1: points they have given up?
[15:13] Speaker 3: 206.
[15:14] Speaker 2: Not quite, but not far.
[15:15] Speaker 6: 177.
[15:15] Speaker 2: The Make-A-Wish Foundation has given up 154.
[15:17] Speaker 1: The Bengals have given up 156.
[15:21] Speaker 2: They have given up 177.
[15:37] Speaker 1: They will not have that same defensive coordinator all year long.
[15:42] Speaker 2: Write that down.
[15:49] Speaker 1: All right.
[15:50] Speaker 2: NBA season is getting close.
[15:52] Speaker 1: Ryan, by the time these people have a chance to
[15:55] Speaker 1: watch this, LeBron will have explained what the.
[15:59] Speaker 2: Decision part two was is that what he was.
[16:01] Speaker 3: Teasing online the second decision the.
[16:03] Speaker 1: Second decision i got a phone call from a television
[16:05] Speaker 1: network and they're like hey can you come on sometime
[16:08] Speaker 1: on tuesday talk about lebron and i said what is
[16:12] Speaker 1: there to talk about lebron they said well he's teasing
[16:14] Speaker 1: something like the second decision we're thinking it might be
[16:17] Speaker 1: retirement no.
[16:21] Speaker 2: It will it will not be that that i was certain.
[16:25] Speaker 3: Of if choosing the decision framing again is certainly a choice,
[16:32] Speaker 3: but choosing, trying to book in his career with the
[16:35] Speaker 3: worst moment of his, it does not seem, does not seem, uh,
[16:41] Speaker 3: It seems like an ad agency idea, not a LeBron idea.
[16:44] Speaker 1: I thought the lesson that they learned from the decision
[16:47] Speaker 1: part one is that there wouldn't go be no decision
[16:49] Speaker 1: part two. The lesson they learned from the decision part
[16:52] Speaker 1: one was to put out a press release for the
[16:54] Speaker 1: next time that you made your decision.
[16:56] Speaker 2: Of where to go.
[16:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, call Lee Jenkins.
[16:58] Speaker 1: Yeah, never did this again. But we are getting close
[17:02] Speaker 1: to the season. The Lakers are going to be fascinating.
[17:05] Speaker 2: J.J.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Reddick says that he talks to Chad GPT all the
[17:08] Speaker 1: time because he's.
[17:12] Speaker 2: Man, man, man, JJ is an interesting situation, right?
[17:16] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[17:18] Speaker 2: I still think that job is going to kill him.
[17:20] Speaker 2: I still don't think that he has the temperament.
[17:22] Speaker 3: I think he has to give everyone on his staff
[17:24] Speaker 3: a break from him. That's why he talks to Chad
[17:26] Speaker 3: DBT for an hour and a half a day.
[17:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, in fact, who on the staff came up with
[17:30] Speaker 2: the idea?
[17:32] Speaker 3: That's a genius. Yeah, who was like, hey, man, you know,
[17:34] Speaker 3: you could always just ask Chad GBT this.
[17:36] Speaker 1: But here's the thing about Chad GBT, and we've talked
[17:39] Speaker 1: about this a little bit here. What ChatGPT don't ever
[17:42] Speaker 1: give you is no backtalk.
[17:44] Speaker 2: So you can.
[17:45] Speaker 1: Tell ChatGPT anything, and it's going to tell you that
[17:49] Speaker 1: you're right.
[17:49] Speaker 3: Sounds like JJ Reddick's best friend.
[17:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[17:54] Speaker 1: And I don't know exactly how well JJ deals with feedback.
[17:56] Speaker 1: I don't have a great answer for that. But if
[17:58] Speaker 1: you don't like backtalk, ChatGPT is, in fact, for you. Now, again,
[18:02] Speaker 1: you can always read books.
[18:04] Speaker 5: But!
[18:05] Speaker 1: Chad GPT is the answer that many people have chosen.
[18:08] Speaker 1: But we came to talk about the NBA because Giannis
[18:11] Speaker 1: Antetokounmpo is back with the Milwaukee Bucks. Sham Sharania of
[18:16] Speaker 1: ESPN wrote a very long piece basically about what happened
[18:24] Speaker 1: or did not happen during the summer with the Bucks
[18:27] Speaker 1: and Giannis and the other interesting group in the story
[18:32] Speaker 1: is the Knicks. Apparently the Knicks were the only team
[18:36] Speaker 1: that Giannis demonstrated an interest in playing for. And the
[18:41] Speaker 1: Knicks did not ever make a real offer to Milwaukee
[18:45] Speaker 1: in large part because the Knicks traded all their stuff
[18:48] Speaker 1: to get Mikael Bridges and then have signed Mikael Bridges
[18:51] Speaker 1: to a massive extension. That is who boy, um, He
[18:57] Speaker 1: better hope Knicks fans don't remember that because they're going
[18:59] Speaker 1: to hate him unless something drastically changes.
[19:02] Speaker 2: About his approach to physical basketball.
[19:04] Speaker 1: They are going to hate him by the time this
[19:05] Speaker 1: year ends because it's going to be a very, very
[19:07] Speaker 1: antsy situation with the Knicks. Anyway, Giannis is back with Milwaukee.
[19:11] Speaker 1: Giannis is in the place with Milwaukee where he's like, hey, man,
[19:14] Speaker 1: if we're not looking like we're a contender for a championship,
[19:18] Speaker 1: then what am I doing here? I would like to
[19:20] Speaker 1: go somewhere else. And I think that that is a...
[19:26] Speaker 1: reasonable premise it is a reasonable idea keeping in mind
[19:31] Speaker 1: the bucks have not been out of the first round
[19:33] Speaker 1: the last three seasons um I made when we did
[19:38] Speaker 1: that list of 25 athletes in the last 25 years
[19:41] Speaker 1: Nick made a fair argument that I penalized Kobe for
[19:47] Speaker 1: those three years in the middle of his career post Shaq,
[19:50] Speaker 1: pre Gasol. But we don't do that to Steph Curry,
[19:55] Speaker 1: who had a similar lull.
[19:57] Speaker 2: In his career.
[19:58] Speaker 1: And I think the argument that I would make against
[20:00] Speaker 1: that is What it meant to have a superstar player
[20:04] Speaker 1: in terms of your outcomes was different in 2006 and
[20:07] Speaker 1: 2007 than what it is now because the rules of
[20:10] Speaker 1: the game have changed.
[20:11] Speaker 2: The rules of the league have changed where it is
[20:14] Speaker 2: much more difficult for a great player to have the impact.
[20:17] Speaker 3: Than it was at that time. And there's more great basketball.
[20:19] Speaker 3: There's more NBA-level basketball players.
[20:22] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[20:22] Speaker 3: But 20 years ago, we couldn't. We had pretty much
[20:26] Speaker 3: the same amount of successful quarterbacks. We have two to
[20:29] Speaker 3: three exes. capable nba basketball players that we.
[20:32] Speaker 1: Did i'll put it to you like this in 2007
[20:34] Speaker 1: lebron james could drag that team he dragged to the
[20:36] Speaker 1: finals you can you can't do that.
[20:38] Speaker 3: Now that's a 30 win team in today's nba.
[20:40] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah you couldn't do that then like it's not
[20:42] Speaker 1: that's where the game is changed so that's kind of
[20:44] Speaker 1: the argument that i make there but at the same
[20:46] Speaker 1: time like did they lose in five games in the
[20:50] Speaker 1: first round is the number one seed.
[20:53] Speaker 2: Like i mean these are It's some indefensible.
[20:56] Speaker 1: Losses that he has had and that he has put up.
[21:00] Speaker 1: The fact that they won a championship and Game 6
[21:03] Speaker 1: went the way that Game 6 went means that there's
[21:06] Speaker 1: some questions that we no longer ask about him. But
[21:08] Speaker 1: it is somewhat, it's very interesting that the question has
[21:11] Speaker 1: always been, are the Bucs doing.
[21:14] Speaker 2: Enough for Giannis?
[21:16] Speaker 1: And the question has not been, do the Bucs need
[21:19] Speaker 1: to go ahead and move on to their future without him,
[21:23] Speaker 1: given what his age is and given that he has
[21:25] Speaker 1: a game, that the aging process as the athleticism declines
[21:31] Speaker 1: is probably going to be a bit harsh unless he
[21:34] Speaker 1: lets Akeem Olajuwon take some of his money and go
[21:37] Speaker 1: down there and really get his ass to dream shaking.
[21:40] Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? They can get down there
[21:41] Speaker 2: talking Nigerian stuff. whatever that means. They can do that.
[21:49] Speaker 2: But anyway, I.
[21:52] Speaker 1: Still think the best play for both parties involved is
[21:54] Speaker 1: real simple, man. Keep Giannis and Giannis stick around. This
[22:00] Speaker 1: is the thing about the sports, right? And we can't
[22:05] Speaker 1: say this to people out loud. And it's very, very interesting.
[22:13] Speaker 1: For most people, kind of sticking around where you at
[22:17] Speaker 1: and making it happen is the best move. Or maybe
[22:22] Speaker 1: I could be saying it's the most convenient move, but
[22:24] Speaker 1: I think very often and in a lot of ways,
[22:27] Speaker 1: it ultimately proves to be the most fulfilling move. And
[22:32] Speaker 1: I think in the current NBA, and we've talked about
[22:35] Speaker 1: this a little bit before, but I want to stay
[22:38] Speaker 1: with this point and keep reminding people of it because
[22:40] Speaker 1: I think it's going to prove itself in the end.
[22:44] Speaker 1: It's going to be so hard to keep a title
[22:47] Speaker 1: window open because they've done so much.
[22:49] Speaker 2: With the rules to encourage parity.
[22:52] Speaker 1: That you can go leave now and hop on the
[22:56] Speaker 1: next big thing because it gives you a chance at
[22:59] Speaker 1: a championship. But that chance at a championship is not
[23:05] Speaker 1: going to be sustainable in all likelihood, which means in
[23:09] Speaker 1: a year, maybe two, You're going to be out here
[23:13] Speaker 1: looking for another place to go.
[23:16] Speaker 2: And this isn't college.
[23:18] Speaker 1: And when I say this isn't college, I mean that
[23:20] Speaker 1: hop year to year transfer situation. It's much easier for
[23:24] Speaker 1: them to do that now than it is for somebody
[23:27] Speaker 1: to do that in the NBA. If you are moving
[23:30] Speaker 1: on to this next team, somebody is going to have
[23:32] Speaker 1: to give up some money. There's going to be scarce,
[23:35] Speaker 1: finite resources that have to be dealt with in order
[23:38] Speaker 1: to make that happen.
[23:40] Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
[23:41] Speaker 1: Like This is, these teams wanted to find ways to
[23:47] Speaker 1: encourage players to stay. And originally the plan was, we
[23:53] Speaker 1: will make it so that you could pay a guy
[23:55] Speaker 1: more money to stay and thereby that guy won't wind
[24:00] Speaker 1: up leaving, right?
[24:02] Speaker 2: And that happened.
[24:03] Speaker 1: But what that did as much as anything else was,
[24:06] Speaker 1: for example, allow the Wizards to pay John Wall and
[24:10] Speaker 1: Bradley Beal.
[24:13] Speaker 2: Big win for you guys, right?
[24:16] Speaker 1: And look, those are two guys that were very good
[24:17] Speaker 1: players and I think very important to that franchise. But
[24:21] Speaker 1: I don't think that's how the owners envisioned that these
[24:24] Speaker 1: things would go, right? But it turns out that the
[24:29] Speaker 1: best way it appears to encourage these people to stay
[24:31] Speaker 1: in the same place is that grass ain't greener over there.
[24:37] Speaker 1: Because what they were trying to say was the grass
[24:38] Speaker 1: is greener over here and is green with this money.
[24:42] Speaker 1: Now the argument is, if you go over there and
[24:46] Speaker 1: it doesn't work right away, then what?
[24:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, there's... Like, title windows used to be four or
[24:55] Speaker 3: five years. I mean, when LeBron was going back to
[24:58] Speaker 3: the first decision, he's saying not two, not three, not four.
[25:02] Speaker 3: I mean, I think if you ask people how many
[25:05] Speaker 3: titles that group of guys are going to win, people
[25:08] Speaker 3: would have said three or four championships. And now title windows...
[25:10] Speaker 3: 18 months?
[25:13] Speaker 1: I think the title window used to be as long
[25:15] Speaker 1: as you had a title player.
[25:17] Speaker 6: Right.
[25:18] Speaker 2: So, like, for me, back in the day, and I
[25:20] Speaker 2: don't know how to... So, I don't know how to define.
[25:22] Speaker 1: The term superstar in this era.
[25:25] Speaker 2: And the reason I say that is this.
[25:26] Speaker 1: Back in the day, the way I defined a superstar was,
[25:29] Speaker 1: does this team have a chance to win a championship
[25:32] Speaker 1: just because you are on the team?
[25:35] Speaker 5: Right?
[25:36] Speaker 2: So, it is for that reason that I had said...
[25:40] Speaker 2: Pete Dwight Howard was a superstar.
[25:44] Speaker 1: A lot of people might not have felt that way,
[25:45] Speaker 1: but Pete Dwight Howard was a superstar. You had a
[25:48] Speaker 1: chance to win a championship just because you had him
[25:52] Speaker 1: on the team. Steph Curry, the 2015 version, like get
[25:56] Speaker 1: around to there. That was a superstar. The reason they
[25:59] Speaker 1: had a chance to win championships and did win championships
[26:02] Speaker 1: is because that guy was on the team. LeBron James,
[26:04] Speaker 1: an example of a guy that I think fit that
[26:06] Speaker 1: same description, right? You can win a championship simply because
[26:10] Speaker 1: This guy plays for your team.
[26:14] Speaker 2: That was it.
[26:15] Speaker 1: There is no player in the NBA right now that
[26:18] Speaker 1: is so good that you have a chance to win
[26:19] Speaker 1: a championship just because that player was on your team.
[26:22] Speaker 1: Nikola Jokic is probably one of the 15 best players
[26:24] Speaker 1: in the history of the NBA. You do not have
[26:27] Speaker 1: a chance to win a championship. simply because that guy is.
[26:31] Speaker 2: On your team.
[26:32] Speaker 1: The impact of one individual player just isn't that strong anymore.
[26:38] Speaker 2: It doesn't exist in that way, right?
[26:41] Speaker 1: So now, if you are that guy, you're in a place,
[26:49] Speaker 1: they put the people around you that make you good
[26:51] Speaker 1: enough to win a championship, and then in a year,
[26:53] Speaker 1: maybe two, that all becomes too expensive, and then you
[26:56] Speaker 1: break that thing down for parts. That's what the new
[27:00] Speaker 1: NBA is going to be. And so to me, it
[27:03] Speaker 1: reminds me. I'll put names to it. So after I
[27:12] Speaker 1: did the show called High Noon for ESPN and after
[27:15] Speaker 1: it ended, I got a phone call on a phone
[27:19] Speaker 1: call with an infamous gentleman named Norby Williams.
[27:23] Speaker 2: Right.
[27:23] Speaker 1: And so I get on the phone with Norby and just,
[27:26] Speaker 1: you know, talk about the future, where are things going?
[27:28] Speaker 1: I just signed a contract extension, you know, but there
[27:31] Speaker 1: was just COVID. There's nothing really for me to do.
[27:32] Speaker 1: And I didn't really know the cat. So I was like, hey, man,
[27:34] Speaker 1: let's get on the phone and let's talk it out.
[27:36] Speaker 2: And I'll never forget. And if you know anything about
[27:39] Speaker 2: Norby's time at.
[27:40] Speaker 1: ESPN, Norby, what they call a survivor. Every job, I think,
[27:45] Speaker 1: has somebody that's just a survivor. And, you know, all
[27:49] Speaker 1: these things happen and somehow this guy stick around, right? Norby,
[27:53] Speaker 1: until he ran across Pat McAfee, was a survivor. So anyway,
[27:58] Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with Norby and Norby just says
[28:00] Speaker 1: to me, you know what?
[28:03] Speaker 2: Somebody like you.
[28:03] Speaker 1: It just needs to just just wait a little while
[28:09] Speaker 1: and things will change.
[28:10] Speaker 2: Let's wait for things to change. That's what he told me.
[28:13] Speaker 1: It's like, look, things were going a certain way and
[28:17] Speaker 1: you were up. And now things have changed. And now
[28:20] Speaker 1: you're down. But if you can wait this out long enough,
[28:24] Speaker 1: it'll turn right back around into your favor. And in
[28:27] Speaker 1: a certain form or fashion, he was correct. Now, of course,
[28:30] Speaker 1: neither of us work there anymore. So you could question
[28:33] Speaker 1: in total what the advice was.
[28:35] Speaker 2: But he wasn't wrong. He wasn't wrong about it. Sometimes
[28:39] Speaker 2: things change and.
[28:40] Speaker 1: You just need to lay low for a little bit
[28:43] Speaker 1: and wait for the things to turn. And I think
[28:48] Speaker 1: that the media environment and everything else has created a
[28:51] Speaker 1: circumstance where everybody feels this pressure to hurry up and
[28:54] Speaker 1: win like right now, because if you don't win like
[28:57] Speaker 1: right now, we're going to be out here talking bad
[28:59] Speaker 1: about you. But I don't think we're going to have
[29:01] Speaker 1: the capacity to talk bad about so many people anymore
[29:04] Speaker 1: because this is going to be the state of affairs.
[29:06] Speaker 2: For everybody.
[29:08] Speaker 1: Like look, what's happened with Denver where I thought Denver
[29:11] Speaker 1: was going to be able to go on a run
[29:12] Speaker 1: for years, but it turned out that the front part
[29:14] Speaker 1: of the Denver window was when Murray and Porter were hurt.
[29:17] Speaker 1: They came back for what turned out to be like
[29:19] Speaker 1: the end of the window. Then they had that down year, Ryan,
[29:22] Speaker 1: and when it got a couple more pieces and now
[29:25] Speaker 1: it looks like they are one of the top contenders
[29:27] Speaker 1: in the West again. Yeah.
[29:28] Speaker 3: We'll see how that all fits together. But I think, um,
[29:31] Speaker 3: like you said, like after they won that first title, um,
[29:36] Speaker 3: Jokic is clearly the best player in the league. You
[29:39] Speaker 3: think they're stacked. for a few more and they haven't
[29:42] Speaker 3: been back since.
[29:42] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just not how it works anymore. You just
[29:45] Speaker 1: got to lay low. And so for Giannis, maybe the
[29:48] Speaker 1: window was closed. Maybe the window was over. But your
[29:51] Speaker 1: chance of getting back to the top is probably just
[29:54] Speaker 1: as strong in Milwaukee as it is were you to leave.
[29:59] Speaker 1: It's probably right there. So if I'm you, I just
[30:05] Speaker 1: stick around. Football is back and so is your shot

[32:32] Speaker 3: All right, Bo, let's run through a couple quick stories.
[32:41] Speaker 3: Interesting one, speaking of ESPN, they're in a weird situation
[32:46] Speaker 3: with Paul Feinbaum. They've had to deny reports that He
[32:49] Speaker 3: has been barred from ESPN networks after his interest, stating
[32:53] Speaker 3: his interest in running for Alabama's open Senate seat. There
[32:57] Speaker 3: are reports of whether he will be back on ESPN today. Bo,
[33:01] Speaker 3: what are your thoughts on this?
[33:02] Speaker 1: Hey, man, this this there's a reason why they told
[33:08] Speaker 1: us we couldn't talk about politics back in the day
[33:10] Speaker 1: when I worked over there.
[33:11] Speaker 5: Right.
[33:11] Speaker 2: And I don't think as much as people won't believe me.
[33:16] Speaker 1: I don't think that not wanting us to talk about
[33:18] Speaker 1: politics at ESPN back in the day was nearly about
[33:21] Speaker 1: ideology than it is.
[33:23] Speaker 2: We talk about the stuff.
[33:26] Speaker 1: They be in suits at the company, got to clean
[33:30] Speaker 1: up whatever mess comes from.
[33:32] Speaker 2: Right.
[33:33] Speaker 1: And not only do they then have to wind up
[33:35] Speaker 1: cleaning a mess that comes from it. They have to
[33:38] Speaker 1: try to clean up this mess with an understanding that
[33:41] Speaker 1: the people who are doing the mess cleaning have their
[33:44] Speaker 1: own politics also. And those are going to affect whatever
[33:49] Speaker 1: decision wind up being mad.
[33:51] Speaker 2: And then it's like, damn, what do we do?
[33:53] Speaker 1: Like, I don't know if you ever heard this story, Ryan,
[33:55] Speaker 1: but David Stern's point about the decision was fantastic, which
[33:59] Speaker 1: was the problem with the decision for LeBron was there
[34:02] Speaker 1: are 30 teams and 29 fan bases are going to
[34:06] Speaker 1: hate you.
[34:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, anything you say where 97% of the people are
[34:11] Speaker 3: unhappy is probably not the best way for our entire
[34:15] Speaker 3: league and our entire operation.
[34:17] Speaker 1: Only one set of people is going to like it. Now,
[34:19] Speaker 1: with sports by and large, there's going to be.
[34:25] Speaker 1: Basically, if you offer sports opinion, especially at a national platform,
[34:28] Speaker 1: most of the people aren't that invested in that particular
[34:31] Speaker 1: game that you're talking about. There's the fans of this team,
[34:33] Speaker 1: fans of that team, and then there's everybody else that's
[34:35] Speaker 1: just kind of looking and maybe has some general opinions,
[34:38] Speaker 1: but they don't have like a personal investment. It's not
[34:40] Speaker 1: nearly a this side, that side scenario as politics.
[34:45] Speaker 2: Is, right?
[34:47] Speaker 1: And so the idea of Feinbaum running for Senate, number one,
[34:53] Speaker 1: It squarely puts them in a this side, that side
[34:56] Speaker 1: proposition at the very least with the fan base that's
[35:00] Speaker 1: in Alabama, which I would imagine is a significant proportion
[35:03] Speaker 1: of the fan base that listens to the Firebomb show
[35:05] Speaker 1: because of its historical roots, right?
[35:07] Speaker 2: That's number one. ESPN don't want that part. They don't
[35:12] Speaker 2: want none of this.
[35:13] Speaker 1: The other part that ESPN don't want none of is
[35:16] Speaker 1: this right here. Are you pulling this guy off the
[35:20] Speaker 1: air today? because he says he's running for Senate. Now,
[35:23] Speaker 1: I will tell you, I don't have any inside information
[35:26] Speaker 1: from the company about this. I haven't talked to anybody
[35:28] Speaker 1: that works there about it. I feel very confident saying
[35:30] Speaker 1: this about the current world order at ESPN. There ain't
[35:34] Speaker 1: no rules, right? Like, not in terms of your ideology,
[35:38] Speaker 1: not in terms of what your politics are. So what
[35:41] Speaker 1: would you think? You think that because Paul Feinbaum says
[35:45] Speaker 1: that he's thinking about running for Senate, that ESPN will
[35:49] Speaker 1: pull him off the air?
[35:50] Speaker 2: For what reason?
[35:51] Speaker 1: The only reason that would make sense is the equal
[35:55] Speaker 1: time provision and them having a measure of concern about
[35:59] Speaker 1: whether or not they run into conflict with that.
[36:03] Speaker 2: And if that's the.
[36:04] Speaker 1: Case, that's perfectly fair, right? I mean, that's not even
[36:07] Speaker 1: perfectly fair. That's what they have to do.
[36:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not an editorial decision. That's a legal decision.
[36:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's no other option. That's what
[36:14] Speaker 2: has to be done.
[36:15] Speaker 1: But I don't think for a moment that it is
[36:18] Speaker 1: an editorial decision that You said you're down with Donald Trump.
[36:24] Speaker 2: We can't have that. Did you just see what Iger
[36:27] Speaker 2: did for Trump? Did you did you just see it?
[36:30] Speaker 2: It just happened over there with the Kimmel thing. Did
[36:32] Speaker 2: you see what happened?
[36:34] Speaker 1: No, I don't believe for a moment that for reasons
[36:37] Speaker 1: of politics that they would tell Feinbaum that he's got
[36:40] Speaker 1: to get off the air.
[36:41] Speaker 2: But I can tell you this. Did you see somebody
[36:43] Speaker 2: called in? They had a caller. They had to drop
[36:46] Speaker 2: the call immediately.
[36:47] Speaker 3: And you saw my mom chuckling?
[36:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, he got on there talking about the politics. And
[36:52] Speaker 1: they had to dump him immediately? They don't want that
[36:56] Speaker 1: every day. I will make one last point. And, I mean,
[37:00] Speaker 1: if you guys know much of the history, that's not
[37:03] Speaker 1: my guy. That's not my friend.
[37:05] Speaker 6: Right?
[37:06] Speaker 2: I'll just leave it at that.
[37:07] Speaker 3: I don't.
[37:08] Speaker 1: I've had one actual factual conversation with Paul Feinbaum in
[37:11] Speaker 1: my life that was not on television, but that's not
[37:13] Speaker 1: my dude. OK, I'll just make this point. I forget
[37:18] Speaker 1: what year it was. I believe it was in the 1960s.
[37:21] Speaker 1: But Bud Wilkinson, the legendary head football coach at Oklahoma,
[37:27] Speaker 1: ran for the Senate in the 1960s and he lost.
[37:33] Speaker 1: He did not win that race. When Tom Osborne left
[37:37] Speaker 1: Nebraska after the 1997 season, he won a seat in
[37:41] Speaker 1: the House and then he tried to run for Senate
[37:45] Speaker 1: and he got his ass handed to him in the primary,
[37:48] Speaker 1: as I recall.
[37:51] Speaker 2: I'm saying all that to say.
[37:54] Speaker 1: There was a time where, yeah, sure, you coach some
[37:59] Speaker 1: football or something like that. But that didn't mean we
[38:02] Speaker 1: were going to give you like an important position because
[38:06] Speaker 1: that would be silly.
[38:09] Speaker 2: We were a proper country once. You know what I mean?
[38:11] Speaker 2: Not anymore.
[38:13] Speaker 3: People in Alabama saw a Democrat win once and then
[38:17] Speaker 3: we're going football coaches and sports commentators running for football.
[38:20] Speaker 2: Here's the thing. Tuberville didn't even coach Alabama. You understand
[38:24] Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Like he did not even coach Alabama.
[38:27] Speaker 2: We didn't always do this is all I'm saying.
[38:31] Speaker 1: Like the fact that we have reached a point where
[38:34] Speaker 1: it is a conceivable idea that Paul Feinbaum could be
[38:38] Speaker 1: be your senator.
[38:39] Speaker 2: And it is entirely on the basis of the fact
[38:41] Speaker 2: that people know who he is.
[38:43] Speaker 1: Right.
[38:44] Speaker 2: So I got it.
[38:45] Speaker 1: Many of you know, my good friend, Matt Jones in Kentucky,
[38:49] Speaker 1: he considered running for Senate against Mitch McConnell. And the
[38:54] Speaker 1: people of the party wanted him to run. But the
[38:57] Speaker 1: biggest part of why they wanted him to run is
[38:58] Speaker 1: because he had the name recognition of a radio show. However,
[39:02] Speaker 1: Matt Jones and Paul Feinbaum are different people. Matt Jones
[39:05] Speaker 1: has a degree from Duke Law School. He is one
[39:08] Speaker 1: of the more brilliant people that I know. He traffics
[39:10] Speaker 1: in these spaces a little bit differently. I don't know
[39:12] Speaker 1: anything about what Paul Feinbaum thinks about anything at all.
[39:16] Speaker 6: Right.
[39:16] Speaker 2: Like if you're telling me the folks in Kentucky are.
[39:18] Speaker 1: Like, hey, Matt, you're really visible and you're probably the
[39:21] Speaker 1: most popular liberal that we have in this state whose
[39:24] Speaker 1: father had not previously been the governor.
[39:26] Speaker 2: Why don't you come on down? Yeah, I think that
[39:28] Speaker 2: makes sense.
[39:29] Speaker 5: Um.
[39:30] Speaker 1: I don't know anything that Paul thinks about anything in
[39:33] Speaker 1: this world other than Hank Williams Jr. that's it that's
[39:36] Speaker 1: that's the only place where I know anything about what
[39:38] Speaker 1: he thinks about stuff and somebody really signed up and
[39:40] Speaker 1: was like hey man what do you think about making
[39:41] Speaker 1: what do you think about that guy being the senator
[39:43] Speaker 1: does that sound like being a good idea what And
[39:46] Speaker 1: it gets back to the idea that my man Neil
[39:49] Speaker 1: Postman had in one of those books that the growth
[39:52] Speaker 1: of television, which was then expanded by the Internet, was
[39:54] Speaker 1: going to reach a point where in order to run
[39:57] Speaker 1: for political office, some other measure of fame was going
[40:01] Speaker 1: to become a prerequisite.
[40:03] Speaker 2: And what Paul.
[40:04] Speaker 1: Feinbaum has that not that many people in the state
[40:06] Speaker 1: of Alabama have is fame and preexisting name recognition.
[40:13] Speaker 2: But this is crazy talk. Hard stop.
[40:17] Speaker 3: All right, sticking with politics, Donald Trump says that the
[40:20] Speaker 3: White House UFC events will be held on June 14th,
[40:24] Speaker 3: right around his 80th birthday. Rumors of Conor McGregor and
[40:28] Speaker 3: John Jones participating in this. Beau, what do you think?
[40:31] Speaker 2: Conor McGregor, where is he from?
[40:34] Speaker 3: Ireland.
[40:35] Speaker 2: Okay, it ain't America.
[40:37] Speaker 3: Just, just, just.
[40:39] Speaker 2: What are we doing, man?
[40:40] Speaker 1: Have you seen those mock-ups that had it looking like
[40:42] Speaker 1: it was going to be.
[40:42] Speaker 2: Like sparklers and pyro and shit out there? Like, I just.
[40:47] Speaker 1: It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't get him
[40:49] Speaker 1: to talk about MMA on ESPN because it was seen
[40:52] Speaker 1: as being kind of beneath the dignity of the network.
[40:55] Speaker 2: They about to do this at the White House?
[40:58] Speaker 1: At the.
[40:59] Speaker 3: I was incorrect. It is his 80th birthday.
[41:03] Speaker 5: Oh.
[41:04] Speaker 2: I did not know that.
[41:06] Speaker 3: It's not only a UFC event. It's also a Trump
[41:09] Speaker 3: birthday party.
[41:10] Speaker 2: I'm just going to throw this out here and let
[41:11] Speaker 2: us move on because it just dawned on me.
[41:14] Speaker 4: Um.
[41:18] Speaker 1: How many January 6th jokes do you think that people
[41:20] Speaker 1: are going to be spitting out about that crowd? Finally,
[41:24] Speaker 1: we have come back to Washington, D.C.
[41:31] Speaker 3: All right. And finally, Taylor Swift's latest album, The Life
[41:35] Speaker 3: of a Showgirl, came out on Friday. It has met
[41:38] Speaker 3: mixed reviews online. Pitchfork gave the album a 5.9 out
[41:42] Speaker 3: of 10. Bo, have you listened to the new Taylor
[41:45] Speaker 3: Swift album?
[41:46] Speaker 2: Oh, hell no. I don't do that.
[41:48] Speaker 1: I don't listen to her music, so I don't say
[41:49] Speaker 1: anything judgmental about her music. It could be excellent. I
[41:53] Speaker 1: truly have no idea. I think there are two parts
[41:55] Speaker 1: of this that are interesting, right? I don't know if
[41:57] Speaker 1: you have been reading the reviews of this or other
[41:59] Speaker 1: things that have come up. But one of the things
[42:02] Speaker 1: is she's talking a lot about having sex.
[42:06] Speaker 3: With Travis Kelsey.
[42:08] Speaker 2: And that is not the best songwriting. that I have
[42:12] Speaker 2: ever heard, right?
[42:14] Speaker 1: Now, granted, my favorite is Prince, who is the best
[42:17] Speaker 1: at writing songs about sex anywhere in the... Prince says
[42:21] Speaker 1: things like, if I was anything else, I'd be the
[42:23] Speaker 1: water in your bath.
[42:25] Speaker 2: Like, this is the level of sex talk that I've
[42:28] Speaker 2: grown accustomed to on records.
[42:31] Speaker 1: She wrote a song called Wood and called that man
[42:33] Speaker 1: a redwood.
[42:35] Speaker 2: This is not.
[42:37] Speaker 2: This isn't wheelhouse songwriting stuff for her. And her fans.
[42:41] Speaker 1: Not enjoying it. I don't know if she like Adele,
[42:46] Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? And like, if Adele say
[42:48] Speaker 1: she putting out a record, you need to call Rich
[42:50] Speaker 1: Paul to make sure he okay. Because at the very
[42:52] Speaker 1: least he's sleeping on the couch. She only, she don't
[42:55] Speaker 1: feel like singing when things is going good.
[42:57] Speaker 2: You must be crazy. That's just not, that's just not
[42:59] Speaker 2: how it goes.
[43:00] Speaker 1: But what I find interesting about this with her is
[43:03] Speaker 1: every great artist has a brick or two, right? Some
[43:07] Speaker 1: more than others. Some stretch it out for a while.
[43:09] Speaker 1: But like my guy Sturgill, that last Sturgill record, it's
[43:12] Speaker 1: a brick, guys. I think we can all go back
[43:14] Speaker 1: and recognize.
[43:15] Speaker 2: We don't want to go back and listen to it.
[43:17] Speaker 2: It's a brick.
[43:18] Speaker 1: We don't acknowledge bricks from stars as much because stars
[43:21] Speaker 1: are more invested, especially online, to saying how much they
[43:24] Speaker 1: love it. This is the first time I could think
[43:26] Speaker 1: of in a long time that a superstar's fans came
[43:31] Speaker 1: straight out and said, she hit us with a brick.
[43:35] Speaker 2: But that's okay. Everybody gets to give us a brick
[43:39] Speaker 2: every now and then. But this sounds like a brick.
[43:42] Speaker 3: Yeah, we have a very long runway with artists in
[43:47] Speaker 3: terms of, we just forget about albums. Yes.
[43:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody's got one.
[43:52] Speaker 1: Like you go back and look at who your favorite is,
[43:54] Speaker 1: and you'd be like, I don't know about that one
[43:56] Speaker 1: right there, right? That one feels, that one, that was
[44:00] Speaker 1: not their best. You know what you say about those?
[44:02] Speaker 1: It's got some songs on it. right?
[44:05] Speaker 2: You start listing the songs individually.
[44:08] Speaker 1: Be like, oh, but wait a minute, wait a minute. Love,
[44:10] Speaker 1: 60 Has, with 2R and Love, and I Wish You Heaven.
[44:13] Speaker 2: And I Like Glam Slam. You like Glam Slam? Dancehall?
[44:15] Speaker 1: You don't like Dancehall? Like, that's the way that you
[44:18] Speaker 1: wind up having the discussion. And I don't think that
[44:20] Speaker 1: record was a brick, but it's got some songs on it.
[44:22] Speaker 3: That's what you got. Or you start saying, it's better
[44:24] Speaker 3: than people remember after a while.
[44:26] Speaker 1: For example, Outkast Idlewild, it is better than you remember,
[44:30] Speaker 1: but it was a brick in the moment, but It's
[44:33] Speaker 1: got Boris Brown. It's got Butron Angel. It's got some
[44:37] Speaker 1: songs on it. It's better than you remember. Maybe that's
[44:41] Speaker 1: what the Taylor fans will be saying about this one. Or, or, or,
[44:46] Speaker 1: maybe she'll be like, fine then, how about I just
[44:47] Speaker 1: go be in love? I already got a gozillion dollars.
[44:50] Speaker 1: What do I need y'all for?
[44:51] Speaker 2: Talk about a break.
[44:58] Speaker 3: All right. Bonus episode, bonus voicemails. Here's our first one.
[45:02] Speaker 7: What's up, Bo? This is Ant calling from the DMV.
[45:07] Speaker 7: I know you're a big Anderson Pack guy. I am too. Unfortunately,
[45:12] Speaker 7: I wasn't able to catch his tour last year. I
[45:15] Speaker 7: was sick the days he was in my area. But
[45:18] Speaker 7: I was able to catch his No Worries tour. And
[45:23] Speaker 7: I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't too familiar with the music,
[45:27] Speaker 7: but I went hoping he was going to do some
[45:28] Speaker 7: of the solo stuff and really enjoyed the show. So
[45:31] Speaker 7: just curious.
[45:33] Speaker 3: Are you a fan of No Worries?
[45:36] Speaker 7: And have you seen them once or the other show?
[45:38] Speaker 3: Keep doing.
[45:40] Speaker 2: Your thing. No and no. Look, I have tried the
[45:46] Speaker 2: No Worries stuff. At every turn, I try it.
[45:49] Speaker 1: And it always just sounds like a lesser version of Anderson.
[45:55] Speaker 1: Somebody got mad at me one time because I said
[45:57] Speaker 1: online about it. I'm like, all the stuff that he does,
[46:01] Speaker 1: that he does with other people, I don't like. They
[46:04] Speaker 1: all get in the way. I think that he is
[46:08] Speaker 1: one of the most talented, greatest performers, songwriter, sum total.
[46:13] Speaker 1: He is up there for me in a pantheonic air
[46:16] Speaker 1: of things, right? That's where I am. Silk Sonic is
[46:20] Speaker 1: a lesser version of him. The No Worry stuff is
[46:23] Speaker 1: a lesser version of him.
[46:24] Speaker 2: And then somebody got mad at me one.
[46:26] Speaker 1: Day online and was like, oh, so you're saying that
[46:29] Speaker 1: It's a problem because of the producer he's working with.
[46:32] Speaker 1: That is exactly what I'm saying. Like, what's crazy about
[46:36] Speaker 1: that thought? I don't like when he do stuff with
[46:40] Speaker 1: this dude. And it seems like he saves his real
[46:43] Speaker 1: heat for himself because he knows better than to waste
[46:45] Speaker 1: it on this cat.
[46:47] Speaker 2: So, yeah, no, no, no.
[46:48] Speaker 1: I went and saw him, me and my old buddy Sean,
[46:51] Speaker 1: went and saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last year.
[46:53] Speaker 2: Hey, man. This knowledge cat ain't going, no, no, no, no, no.
[46:57] Speaker 1: So y'all can have that. Like, I got one or
[47:00] Speaker 1: two of them on vinyl just because I support the homie.
[47:02] Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's not even the homie.
[47:03] Speaker 2: I need to stop acting like I know that man.
[47:05] Speaker 1: Because I did introduce myself to him, and he was like, oh,
[47:07] Speaker 1: my God, a fan.
[47:09] Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, shit. How do I get out
[47:11] Speaker 2: of this situation? Oh, man, it was a tough game.
[47:14] Speaker 2: It was a tough situation. Tough situation. But yeah, no, no, no.
[47:16] Speaker 2: You can have it.
[47:17] Speaker 1: No worries.
[47:17] Speaker 2: Not for me.
[47:19] Speaker 3: All right. Here's our next one.
[47:20] Speaker 2: What's good, Bomani, man?
[47:22] Speaker 5: This is Mike Z, man. I'm a big fan of
[47:24] Speaker 5: the show, been listening to it.
[47:25] Speaker 7: I can't even remember how long I've been listening to.
[47:27] Speaker 5: It, but I've been listening to it for a long time, man.
[47:31] Speaker 5: Shout out to the HBCUs.
[47:32] Speaker 7: I know you're a Clark Atlanta grad.
[47:33] Speaker 5: My sister works there. She's a professor. And I graduated
[47:38] Speaker 5: from Tuskegee. But I called to talk about this Alabama-Vanderbilt game, man.
[47:43] Speaker 5: It's crazy that this was even a game. But I
[47:46] Speaker 5: was watching my wife, and my wife was like, Kalen DeBoer,
[47:51] Speaker 5: the coach for Alabama, looks like he does not like
[47:54] Speaker 5: his job. And I had to tell her, look, I
[47:58] Speaker 5: went to school in Tuskegee, which, you know, is like
[48:00] Speaker 5: 15 minutes from Auburn and a couple hours from Tuscaloosa.
[48:04] Speaker 5: But I was like, the way they care about football
[48:07] Speaker 5: is ridiculous. I had a homeboy send me a video
[48:10] Speaker 5: from the Paul Firebomb show. And he said, and I quote,
[48:13] Speaker 5: using your words of money, and I quote, if Kalen
[48:17] Speaker 5: the Boy was on life support, I would unplug it
[48:20] Speaker 5: and charge my phone. And my homeboy was like, yo,
[48:23] Speaker 5: they really like this in Alabama?
[48:25] Speaker 3: And I was like, yes.
[48:27] Speaker 5: He was so serious about saying that. And so my wife, no,
[48:32] Speaker 5: he probably does not like his job. They de-vandy, but still.
[48:36] Speaker 5: What you think about that, bro? You think Kalen the
[48:38] Speaker 5: Boy like his job? Ha ha.
[48:41] Speaker 2: He knows the answer to this question. I have been
[48:44] Speaker 2: telling people this for the long... It is so much...
[48:47] Speaker 2: I guess he already knew it, but now his wife
[48:48] Speaker 2: is seeing it.
[48:49] Speaker 1: Everybody's starting to understand because people hit me a lot
[48:52] Speaker 1: and be like, oh, no, they'll cut Saban some slack. No,
[48:55] Speaker 1: they will not. Saban was like 10-2. Let me get
[49:00] Speaker 1: out of here before they burn my house down.
[49:04] Speaker 3: That's why Kalen DeBoer was looking miserable, because he was
[49:06] Speaker 3: thinking about what his life was going to be like
[49:07] Speaker 3: in four hours if he lost to Vanderbilt at home.
[49:10] Speaker 2: Yo, but how about this? It's not going to be
[49:11] Speaker 2: any better if you win. Nothing is good enough.
[49:15] Speaker 6: Nothing.
[49:16] Speaker 2: They're playing. There are a hundred something teams and they're.
[49:18] Speaker 1: Playing for a national title every single year. Nothing is
[49:23] Speaker 1: good enough. And this is the thing I meant to
[49:25] Speaker 1: mention when I was talking about the playoff on Monday
[49:27] Speaker 1: that I think is important and I don't think people recognize.
[49:30] Speaker 2: One thing the playoff did is it increased the number
[49:33] Speaker 2: of teams whose seasons end with a loss.
[49:37] Speaker 1: So the existence of a playoff means more chances to
[49:41] Speaker 1: win national championships and more chances to lose them if
[49:44] Speaker 1: you're Alabama.
[49:45] Speaker 3: They might have run Ryan Day off if he won
[49:47] Speaker 3: a national title last year. You lose to Michigan and
[49:49] Speaker 3: in the playoff?
[49:50] Speaker 1: Nah, I think John Cooper was allowed to go 2-10-1
[49:55] Speaker 1: against Michigan at that job.
[49:56] Speaker 2: That's not a hang-em-high job.
[50:00] Speaker 3: But Alabama, if they don't win a national title in
[50:03] Speaker 3: the next two years, he's out of there.
[50:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, but not even because they're going to fire him.
[50:08] Speaker 2: Because he's going to leave. That was the thing. Ray
[50:10] Speaker 2: Perkins left.
[50:12] Speaker 1: Bill Curry kind of got fired, but ultimately left. Dennis
[50:16] Speaker 1: Francione left. Like these guys look around and say, oh,
[50:20] Speaker 1: hell no.
[50:21] Speaker 2: And they just leave.
[50:24] Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
[50:26] Speaker 6: Hey, Bomani. This is Russell from Virginia. I've been listening
[50:30] Speaker 6: to the show since the Shannon days. And I'm calling
[50:32] Speaker 6: in with a story about somebody leaving their job in
[50:34] Speaker 6: a memorable way. So back in the summer of 2000,
[50:39] Speaker 6: on the weekend after my 16th birthday, I rode my
[50:44] Speaker 6: bike to the nearest shopping center and came away with
[50:46] Speaker 6: a job at a Quiznos Subs. And I ended up
[50:49] Speaker 6: working there about two years. And along with the $ 5. 65
[50:53] Speaker 6: an hour, I earned a lot of lessons about life.
[50:58] Speaker 6: The person I learned the most from was a guy
[51:01] Speaker 6: named Angelo. He was the general manager at the store,
[51:04] Speaker 6: and he was kind of a unique guy. He dealt
[51:09] Speaker 6: a little bit of weed out of the back of
[51:10] Speaker 6: the store. He worked high, which to that point in
[51:13] Speaker 6: my life was not a thing I realized you could do.
[51:15] Speaker 6: He ran a little amateur boxing club out in the
[51:21] Speaker 6: back of the store. He brought his taser into work
[51:24] Speaker 6: and showed me how that works. So, you know, I
[51:27] Speaker 6: learned a lot about people by spending that amount of
[51:29] Speaker 6: time with Angelo. But after about a year of working there,
[51:33] Speaker 6: I came in, and there was a new general manager,
[51:36] Speaker 6: and it turned out Angelo had been fired. And he
[51:39] Speaker 6: was a bit of a hothead, so I never really
[51:41] Speaker 6: did find out what happened, but I can't say I
[51:43] Speaker 6: was surprised. The thing that made it memorable was that
[51:47] Speaker 6: about a month later, I got a call on a
[51:50] Speaker 6: Friday morning, asked if I could come in for an
[51:52] Speaker 6: emergency shift. And when I got there, turned out the
[51:56] Speaker 6: owner of the store had been in the hospital all night.
[52:00] Speaker 6: And the reason he had been in the hospital all
[52:02] Speaker 6: night was because, like every other Thursday, when he left
[52:05] Speaker 6: the store with the cash take from the week so
[52:09] Speaker 6: that he could deposit it in the bank the next day,
[52:11] Speaker 6: he turned around to lock the door and close up.
[52:15] Speaker 6: And somebody stepped out from the shadows and tased him.
[52:19] Speaker 6: And when he woke up from that tasing, obviously the
[52:23] Speaker 6: $ 8, 000 that was in the cash bag was gone. And
[52:27] Speaker 6: that's all we really know for certain about that.
[52:32] Speaker 5: So anyway, thanks for the show.
[52:33] Speaker 6: Appreciate everything you do.
[52:34] Speaker 3: Have a good one.
[52:36] Speaker 2: First of all.
[52:38] Speaker 1: Well played all around in the setup of the story, right?
[52:42] Speaker 2: Top to bottom. I also love this way. I didn't
[52:46] Speaker 2: know you could, he used to come to work high.
[52:48] Speaker 1: I didn't know you could work high. That is a,
[52:51] Speaker 1: that is a turning point moment in the lives of
[52:54] Speaker 1: many of us. The first time you see somebody show
[52:57] Speaker 1: up to work high and then you realize.
[52:58] Speaker 2: Wait a minute, he's still over there getting the job done.
[53:02] Speaker 5: Huh?
[53:03] Speaker 2: Ain't that something?
[53:05] Speaker 1: So I love that he's as he said, like, I
[53:08] Speaker 1: feel like I know Angelo top to bottom the way
[53:11] Speaker 1: he fully stacked it up.
[53:12] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[53:12] Speaker 3: If you give us a two minute voicemail, it's got
[53:14] Speaker 3: to be a great story. And that was a rich
[53:17] Speaker 3: character building.
[53:18] Speaker 2: I also want to know all the things. How did
[53:21] Speaker 2: Angelo manage to get this job?
[53:23] Speaker 1: Like with all the things that he named him by Angelo,
[53:25] Speaker 1: if he was doing them as the general manager, he
[53:27] Speaker 1: was also doing those things when he was working on
[53:30] Speaker 1: the line.
[53:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to I want I want to know
[53:34] Speaker 3: more about Angelo as well.
[53:36] Speaker 2: Angelo. Excuse me. Someone.
[53:39] Speaker 7: Someone.
[53:41] Speaker 3: At the same place where Angelo demonstrated how to use
[53:43] Speaker 3: the taser.
[53:46] Speaker 1: And what I love is that if Angelo did that,
[53:50] Speaker 1: he did it with his signature on purpose to dare you.
[53:55] Speaker 1: And apparently he came up. He had a he had
[53:57] Speaker 1: a great plan. Like I was watching Inside Man the
[54:00] Speaker 1: other day.
[54:01] Speaker 2: Great plan.
[54:02] Speaker 3: Great plan.
[54:03] Speaker 1: Great plan. Speaking of that, I've been watching a few
[54:05] Speaker 1: movies for whatever reason. And in our next episode, we're
[54:08] Speaker 1: going to have my buddy Howard Bryan on. We're going
[54:09] Speaker 1: to try something. You guys let us know what you
[54:11] Speaker 1: think about this, but we're going to do some movie talk.
[54:13] Speaker 1: We're going to talk about one battle after another, maybe
[54:17] Speaker 1: even a little bit about high and low and highest.
[54:19] Speaker 2: To lowest because Howard is a super movie dude. And
[54:21] Speaker 2: you know, I know how to talk. So, you know,
[54:24] Speaker 2: check it out. It should be good stuff.
[54:26] Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
[54:28] Speaker 1: here on.

[54:30] Speaker 1: We do this three times a week, sometimes four. Ryan
