Bomani Jones reacts to Spurs vs. Thunder Game 7 and explains why Victor Wembanyama is turning neutral fans into Spurs fans. On this episode of The Right Time, Bo breaks down Wemby vs. Chet Holmgren, what made the San Antonio Spurs so compelling, and why the Oklahoma City Thunder are still better than a lot of people want to admit. Then Bomani dives into the NBA’s new draft lottery reform and what it means for tanking, team-building, and why the league is trying to stop late-season embarrassment. After that, Bo gets into the New York Giants drama surrounding Jackson Dart, Abdul Carter, Donald Trump, and Jameis Winston’s completely chaotic comments. Learn more about your ad choices. [0:09] Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
[0:14] Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont E. Jones. Thanks for listening wherever
[0:16] Speaker 1: you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
[0:20] Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
[0:23] Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
[0:25] Speaker 1: a hater. Great Western Conference Final, Game 7. We got
[0:29] Speaker 1: a lot to talk about there, a lot in the
[0:31] Speaker 1: rest of the world. Look, we start with San Antonio because, okay.
[0:38] Speaker 1: The San Antonio Spurs, in the era of Tim Duncan,
[0:42] Speaker 1: they won championships twice. What? 09, 03, 05, 07, and 2014.
[0:49] Speaker 1: And I know.
[0:51] Speaker 2: 99, but you get the gist. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[0:54] Speaker 1: My bad. Did I say 09?
[0:55] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[0:56] Speaker 1: Okay.
[0:56] Speaker 2: Close enough.
[0:56] Speaker 1: Whatever, man. Look, yeah, we're there.
[0:58] Speaker 2: We're there.
[0:59] Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. Because I sure did miss it.
[1:01] Speaker 1: And other people would have too.
[1:03] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[1:03] Speaker 1: But anyway, 99, 03, 05, 07, 2014, and... Ryan, how
[1:10] Speaker 1: many people you know that became Spurs fans as a result?
[1:13] Speaker 1: I know one.
[1:15] Speaker 2: I'd have, it would be maybe one.
[1:20] Speaker 1: The one non-San Antonio affiliated Spurs fan that I know
[1:25] Speaker 1: is my man Rodney. And it's because I think either
[1:28] Speaker 1: his dad was a Lakers fan or he just wanted
[1:30] Speaker 1: to be spiteful to the Lakers fans because it was
[1:33] Speaker 1: cracking at the time and he was young. Maybe it's
[1:35] Speaker 1: some of y'all where I imagine the Spurs were really
[1:37] Speaker 1: good on the game.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Right.
[1:38] Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like that's one way the
[1:40] Speaker 1: kids decide what teams they're going to get into these days.
[1:43] Speaker 1: is on the game.
[1:45] Speaker 2: Who wants to play on the video game with Tim Duncan?
[1:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, but I bet he was a defensive force. Utah
[1:52] Speaker 1: the only one where it was like, man, ain't nobody
[1:53] Speaker 1: doing this shit. Not even on NBA Jam, where all
[1:56] Speaker 1: you had was two people, which is all we thought
[1:58] Speaker 1: the Jazz had anyway.
[2:00] Speaker 2: I ain't doing that.
[2:01] Speaker 1: It's out of your mind. But anyway, the Spurs were
[2:03] Speaker 1: an uninteresting bunch who didn't do anything to be interesting, right?
[2:07] Speaker 1: Who ran away from even doing their part to help
[2:09] Speaker 1: promote the league. Oh, we're going to be on Thursday
[2:11] Speaker 1: Night Basketball? How about we don't play any of our guys, right?
[2:14] Speaker 1: Your best player has no interest in talking to anybody
[2:17] Speaker 1: in the media ever. The rest of your players ain't
[2:21] Speaker 1: from America. You know, we was a little slow on
[2:23] Speaker 1: the uptake at that. But at the same time, maybe
[2:25] Speaker 1: they crawl in order so that these Spurs... run because
[2:29] Speaker 1: they are so much fun and they are at once
[2:33] Speaker 1: old school new school they are everything that my old
[2:37] Speaker 1: ass really wants a basketball team to be which is
[2:41] Speaker 1: they care a lot like the part that was abundantly
[2:46] Speaker 1: clear in watching this is they care a lot and
[2:49] Speaker 1: I don't want to try to imply that that other
[2:53] Speaker 1: teams don't care right i think that that's something that
[2:56] Speaker 1: goes a little bit too that we get a little
[2:57] Speaker 1: bit too far in i mean the knicks definitely look
[2:59] Speaker 1: like they were out there playing like guys who cared
[3:02] Speaker 1: but the spurs victor seems to care in a much
[3:05] Speaker 1: different way and maybe this one story is doing too
[3:08] Speaker 1: much work in the legend of victor win by yama
[3:11] Speaker 1: but the fact that he went and kicked it with
[3:13] Speaker 1: the monks ryan like he really spent time.
[3:16] Speaker 2: In there going up the hill of the basketball.
[3:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's, I mean, I gotta say, that implies a
[3:22] Speaker 1: level of caring that I don't see from his peers.
[3:25] Speaker 2: Right.
[3:26] Speaker 1: And look, maybe somebody else gonna hang out with Monks. Honestly,
[3:29] Speaker 1: I don't know what else one of them could do
[3:32] Speaker 1: to make me think that it was the same as
[3:33] Speaker 1: working out. He wouldn't have hung out with the Monks
[3:35] Speaker 1: and wouldn't have gave Akeem Olajuwon some money.
[3:37] Speaker 2: Right.
[3:38] Speaker 4: Right?
[3:39] Speaker 1: Right? He cared enough to set money on fire.
[3:43] Speaker 5: Right?
[3:43] Speaker 1: He's like, hey, I hear that people come down here
[3:45] Speaker 1: and give you money to not play like you. I'd
[3:48] Speaker 1: like to do that now. Okay, put it up. We
[3:52] Speaker 1: will now work on your lateral movement. But man, that
[3:57] Speaker 1: game seven, I want to ask you this, right? Because
[4:01] Speaker 1: I found myself raising this question about the series itself, right?
[4:05] Speaker 1: Game one was great. Game seven was great. five blowouts
[4:12] Speaker 1: for the most part in between.
[4:13] Speaker 4: Right.
[4:14] Speaker 1: But I still felt like it was a very good series.
[4:17] Speaker 2: Yes.
[4:17] Speaker 1: Even if not every game was good, I felt like
[4:21] Speaker 1: as a series, it was still very good. Maybe it's
[4:25] Speaker 1: just also because it had a push and pull. So
[4:27] Speaker 1: we had a rhythm, right? So San Antonio won the
[4:29] Speaker 1: first game. Oklahoma City won the next two. San Antonio
[4:32] Speaker 1: wins game four. Then it's game five, game six, game seven, right?
[4:36] Speaker 1: But I felt like I never, I felt like after
[4:39] Speaker 1: game one, I thought I had a handle on things.
[4:41] Speaker 1: After game two, I did not. After game three, I
[4:43] Speaker 1: thought I had a handle. And I thought San Antonio
[4:46] Speaker 1: just couldn't do it. After game five, I really thought
[4:49] Speaker 1: San Antonio couldn't do it because they looked so exhausted. Right? Like,
[4:55] Speaker 1: I think what this series helped me understand is when
[4:58] Speaker 1: discussing the idea of experience in the playoffs, the biggest
[5:04] Speaker 1: part of it is You just can't apparently explain to
[5:07] Speaker 1: people how much more energy playoff basketball requires than the
[5:11] Speaker 1: rest of the games. I know you have not done this,
[5:15] Speaker 1: but there are a lot of people who are listening
[5:16] Speaker 1: who will understand what I'm talking about right here, okay?
[5:20] Speaker 1: If you've ever gone to graduate school and done a
[5:23] Speaker 1: PhD program, all right, people are going to tell you
[5:29] Speaker 1: how hard it is. And you're going to say, how
[5:34] Speaker 1: hard is Could it really be? It's just school, right?
[5:39] Speaker 1: You've been going to school the whole time. They told
[5:41] Speaker 1: you college was going to be really hard, but college
[5:44] Speaker 1: wasn't really hard. They're like, yeah, this is going to
[5:46] Speaker 1: be really hard. Even if you've done like a master's program,
[5:49] Speaker 1: which is harder than college, right? Like how hard could
[5:53] Speaker 1: this really be? And you're reading like two, three books
[5:57] Speaker 1: a week in a course, right? You got to read
[6:02] Speaker 1: a couple of books a week in a course, right?
[6:06] Speaker 1: And we're not talking about the cat in the hat.
[6:08] Speaker 1: We're not talking about green eggs and ham. This shit
[6:09] Speaker 1: is not fun at all. The words is like this
[6:13] Speaker 1: little on the page and they're big as fuck and
[6:15] Speaker 1: you're supposed to remember them. You're supposed to take notes.
[6:17] Speaker 1: It's like all these things and everybody told you on
[6:20] Speaker 1: the front end, it's not the same. It's just not
[6:23] Speaker 1: the same. Well, how much different can it be? Game five,
[6:27] Speaker 1: I looked at him and the rest of those guys,
[6:29] Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, that's how much different it
[6:32] Speaker 1: can be. And I thought they were cooked. I didn't
[6:34] Speaker 1: think there was any way possible that they could get
[6:37] Speaker 1: themselves back into it. And they did. And they demonstrated
[6:40] Speaker 1: a measure of will in game seven. Because you know
[6:44] Speaker 1: Oklahoma City is tired as hell. Two, they just had
[6:46] Speaker 1: more experience with the feeling. They had the opportunities to
[6:49] Speaker 1: figure out what you have to do when you get
[6:51] Speaker 1: to that place.
[6:52] Speaker 2: All right.
[6:52] Speaker 1: Victor said after one game in the playoffs, I think
[6:55] Speaker 1: it was against Minnesota. He's like, I got to figure
[6:56] Speaker 1: out how to distribute my energy.
[6:59] Speaker 2: Right.
[7:00] Speaker 1: That experience thing matters. They just overcame it because they
[7:04] Speaker 1: got a dude on the team that's eight feet tall.
[7:06] Speaker 1: I know I keep saying that over and over again,
[7:09] Speaker 1: but he's eight feet tall. And when you're eight feet tall,
[7:12] Speaker 1: you do things like when he dunked on Chet with
[7:14] Speaker 1: two hands and he doesn't even have to jump.
[7:17] Speaker 2: He just moves from spots on the court that looks
[7:19] Speaker 2: like it's like laggy internet or video games glitching. It's
[7:23] Speaker 2: Nerf hoop.
[7:24] Speaker 1: Me and my brother over here watching this. He's like,
[7:25] Speaker 1: he's just on the Nerf hoop.
[7:26] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[7:27] Speaker 4: Right?
[7:27] Speaker 1: Like when you're on the Nerf hoop and you stick
[7:29] Speaker 1: your arm out, it's like, oh, let me flick these
[7:31] Speaker 1: pair of socks into the hamper.
[7:32] Speaker 2: Right.
[7:33] Speaker 3: Right?
[7:33] Speaker 1: That's all this is at every turn. Surrounded by dudes
[7:37] Speaker 1: that go hard.
[7:39] Speaker 2: Right?
[7:39] Speaker 1: Castle goes hard. Vassell goes hard. Luke Cornett. With that
[7:47] Speaker 1: block he had on Hartenstein. He went with the confidence
[7:54] Speaker 1: that implies that he doesn't know. He doesn't know. But
[7:59] Speaker 1: he was like, I can block his shot. Do I
[8:02] Speaker 1: think that he would have tried that with even Stephon Castle?
[8:06] Speaker 1: That's his old team, sorry. Do I think that he
[8:09] Speaker 1: would have tried that with Jalen Williams? Army dad. Jalen Williams.
[8:16] Speaker 2: No chance.
[8:17] Speaker 1: Nope.
[8:17] Speaker 2: Nope.
[8:17] Speaker 1: He saw Harden's side and he would do that. And
[8:19] Speaker 1: by the way, I would like to take a moment
[8:21] Speaker 1: right fast because I know there's some people that get
[8:24] Speaker 1: a little uncomfortable when I say that Jada Williams looked
[8:26] Speaker 1: like his daddy was in the service.
[8:28] Speaker 4: Right.
[8:28] Speaker 1: But you need to understand that what I'm saying is
[8:31] Speaker 1: not as broad as you believe. It's a bit more narrow. OK,
[8:34] Speaker 1: I'm not simply saying that because he a Belasian that
[8:37] Speaker 1: he looked like his daddy in the service.
[8:39] Speaker 2: No, sir.
[8:40] Speaker 1: Dillon Harper is a Belasian. Jerry McCain is a Belasian.
[8:45] Speaker 1: but they don't look like they daddies was in the service.
[8:49] Speaker 4: Right?
[8:50] Speaker 1: But you don't see it with them. Jalen Williams, his daddy, granddaddy,
[8:55] Speaker 1: somebody was over there fucking with Charlie.
[8:57] Speaker 2: Right?
[8:57] Speaker 1: Like, it's a subtle distinction. I don't understand where the
[9:02] Speaker 1: line is, but you see it, you hear it, you
[9:05] Speaker 1: feel it, you understand it, and it's in offense. Just
[9:09] Speaker 1: kind of what it is.
[9:10] Speaker 5: Right?
[9:12] Speaker 1: Anyway, Luke Cornette went up and got that shot from Hartenstein.
[9:15] Speaker 1: And I don't know, I felt like at that moment,
[9:17] Speaker 1: that's when it was like, oh, Victor inspires them all
[9:21] Speaker 1: the way to the end of the bench. Like, the
[9:24] Speaker 1: level of everything from the end of the bench with
[9:27] Speaker 1: the old guys and everybody else, they seem to be really,
[9:30] Speaker 1: really enjoying it. They have the same camaraderie that the
[9:34] Speaker 1: Thunder seem to have, but they don't seem to got
[9:36] Speaker 1: no dorks over there. Now, I noticed some of y'all
[9:39] Speaker 1: are going to say that about Luke Cornett. Because you
[9:41] Speaker 1: messed up your little strip club night at the arena. Like,
[9:44] Speaker 1: that wasn't the dumbest idea of all time. But I
[9:49] Speaker 1: don't feel like it's a heavy dork. And I ain't
[9:50] Speaker 1: going to lie.
[9:51] Speaker 2: They do have a Plumlee.
[9:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's even not quite dork like you might expect. Well,
[9:57] Speaker 1: he did have an Albert Einstein poster on the wall
[9:59] Speaker 1: when he was in college. But if I'm not mistaken,
[10:03] Speaker 1: he was getting his hair cut at the place with disease.
[10:06] Speaker 2: Got it.
[10:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and he 35. Look, you remember when Victor
[10:10] Speaker 1: sent them boys in there at game five? I don't
[10:11] Speaker 1: know how I missed it. He sent them boys in
[10:13] Speaker 1: there at game five, and they started, and they gooned
[10:15] Speaker 1: it up. Him and Busy went out there. He took
[10:18] Speaker 1: our advice.
[10:19] Speaker 2: He's not his own goon.
[10:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, he elbowed Jeremy Cade in the back. I was like, okay.
[10:26] Speaker 1: He did go to Duke. That's the sort of behavior
[10:29] Speaker 1: that they might engage in. But, Ryan, you and I
[10:31] Speaker 1: talked about this before we got out here. That wasn't
[10:35] Speaker 1: even like a great Victor game. No. The most impressive
[10:38] Speaker 1: thing to me that Victor did was after he got
[10:41] Speaker 1: that fifth foul, and I don't know how that happened.
[10:43] Speaker 1: Me and my brother heard somebody say something about five fouls,
[10:46] Speaker 1: and I was like, well, maybe the next one's five. No,
[10:48] Speaker 1: he had five fouls with seven minutes left in the
[10:52] Speaker 1: fourth quarter. And I was like, hey, I didn't get it.
[10:54] Speaker 1: I would have got him out of there because they
[10:56] Speaker 1: were still playing pretty well without him in there. And
[10:58] Speaker 1: it was so funny because it was after I had
[11:00] Speaker 1: given my brother this long diatribe, and I believe this,
[11:03] Speaker 1: that NBA teams, that there is one of the last
[11:06] Speaker 1: places that's left where I think that conventional wisdom does
[11:10] Speaker 1: a disservice and that there's gains to be had for
[11:12] Speaker 1: teams is the way that they react to foul trouble.
[11:15] Speaker 1: So somebody gets into foul trouble, and so in order
[11:19] Speaker 1: for them to not have to come out of the game,
[11:22] Speaker 1: you take them out of the game.
[11:24] Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying? Right.
[11:25] Speaker 1: Like, like you are, you are effectively doing what you
[11:29] Speaker 1: wish to prevent from happening very often.
[11:32] Speaker 2: Right.
[11:32] Speaker 1: And then right after that, Victor got five fouls. And
[11:35] Speaker 1: I'm like, Ooh, you might want to get that guy.
[11:36] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:40] Speaker 1: You know, but then also when they got him out
[11:42] Speaker 1: of there, the Spurs were still like, I felt like
[11:43] Speaker 1: they were still stretching it out a little bit. So
[11:45] Speaker 1: it was like, okay, you might've been okay. They left
[11:47] Speaker 1: him in there. And what he started doing was so funny.
[11:51] Speaker 1: He was challenging shots, but he wasn't jumping and he
[11:53] Speaker 1: wasn't putting his arms up. He would just run over
[11:55] Speaker 1: like he was about to and then fake up. And
[11:58] Speaker 1: them dudes was shook. They was like, oh shit, we
[12:01] Speaker 1: get the ball to somebody else. Like the mere idea
[12:03] Speaker 1: of him. Again, he doesn't have to jump in order
[12:07] Speaker 1: to effectively play basketball. Does anybody compile jump ball stats?
[12:11] Speaker 1: How does he ever lose? I don't think I've ever
[12:13] Speaker 1: seen him lose one.
[12:14] Speaker 2: The wild thing to me is watching him contest a
[12:16] Speaker 2: corner three when he's running out there. He looks like
[12:22] Speaker 2: he's got those wide arms. He jumps so high. And
[12:25] Speaker 2: that's the only time you really see him in all
[12:28] Speaker 2: that space. You really kind of visualize how big he is.
[12:32] Speaker 1: Who is it that I've already forgotten because he's been demoted?
[12:35] Speaker 1: But I forget who it is that I used to
[12:37] Speaker 1: compare to.
[12:37] Speaker 2: Jason.
[12:37] Speaker 1: Jason. We're like, you always think you okay. The next
[12:41] Speaker 1: thing you know, damn, how'd Jason get here? I just
[12:44] Speaker 1: left you all the way back there. Now I turned 11,
[12:46] Speaker 1: Jason just pulled up. Jason, he everywhere. He everywhere, dog.
[12:51] Speaker 1: Everywhere you go, you can't. This dude is 15 feet
[12:54] Speaker 1: away from you and he's throwing his hands up in
[12:55] Speaker 1: the air and you're like, shit, man, I got to
[12:56] Speaker 1: put a little bit more arc in this. Like, I
[12:58] Speaker 1: love that Isaiah Harden's style been shooting that ugly push
[13:01] Speaker 1: shot all this time, apparently simply in preparation for this day.
[13:06] Speaker 1: of what to do with this guy, right? This guy
[13:10] Speaker 1: and the other merry band of dudes who can't rent cars. Right. Like,
[13:18] Speaker 1: let's get a look at this, okay? And this is,
[13:20] Speaker 1: you know, maybe we get a little ahead of ourselves
[13:23] Speaker 1: looking toward the future or whatever. I hear you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
[13:27] Speaker 1: Let's get a look at all the guys on this team.
[13:32] Speaker 1: Dylan Harper, he is 20. Carter Bryant, He is 20.
[13:37] Speaker 1: Stephon Castle is 21. Victor Wimbanyama is 22. Sham Pipple
[13:48] Speaker 1: is a robust 24. Devin Vassell is 26. Keldon Johnson
[13:56] Speaker 1: is the old man at 26. No, De'Aaron Fox is
[13:58] Speaker 1: the old man at 27. Then Luke Cornett At 30.
[14:10] Speaker 1: And Biz McBionbo and Harrison Barnes. Well, Harrison Barnes just
[14:15] Speaker 1: turned 34. Happy birthday. And Biz at 33. And then
[14:20] Speaker 1: the old white dudes. Kelly Olenek. Okay, he's old. He's 35.
[14:24] Speaker 3: He's old.
[14:25] Speaker 1: Naysa Plumlee.
[14:25] Speaker 2: He's old.
[14:26] Speaker 1: He's 36. Yeah. But all the guys that play are
[14:28] Speaker 1: like 22.
[14:29] Speaker 2: It's insane. Yeah. Yeah.
[14:32] Speaker 1: And they don't scare.
[14:33] Speaker 2: Right.
[14:34] Speaker 1: They don't scare. Like, I think I have adjusted my
[14:36] Speaker 1: understanding and my concept of what matters, right? About the
[14:41] Speaker 1: experience part, I really think it's just adjusting to how
[14:45] Speaker 1: hard it is. Like, you know, people talk about the
[14:48] Speaker 1: rookie wall in the NBA, and we see the guys
[14:50] Speaker 1: have to push through it. I think that's maybe the
[14:52] Speaker 1: biggest thing that comes up in this, is that is
[14:55] Speaker 1: a wall. Like, oh my god, I am tired, dog.
[14:58] Speaker 1: And in the conference finals, you're playing every other night, literally,
[15:02] Speaker 1: at that point. The finals are not going to have that.
[15:04] Speaker 1: You're going to get, like, I think between games four
[15:06] Speaker 1: and seven, they're two nights off. Between all of those, right?
[15:11] Speaker 1: It's going to be there. But, and they're about to
[15:14] Speaker 1: be at It's going to be against the Knicks, like
[15:17] Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden for game three?
[15:19] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[15:24] Speaker 1: This was fun. Like Saturday night was a great time.
[15:27] Speaker 1: And I feel like they're making Spurs fans. Like I
[15:30] Speaker 1: was shocked how many people were watching this. Maybe it's
[15:32] Speaker 1: because people also just ain't really feeling this Thunder shit
[15:34] Speaker 1: no more. But I was surprised by how many people
[15:37] Speaker 1: I saw that were watching this. And now they're like, oh,
[15:39] Speaker 1: I'm with this, right? The whole thing was nobody roots
[15:42] Speaker 1: for Goliath. That was Will Chamberlain's thing about, you know,
[15:45] Speaker 1: nobody roots for the Goliath. Somehow, maybe it's just because
[15:48] Speaker 1: he's skinny. I don't feel like that's the case with Victor.
[15:52] Speaker 1: We was rooting against the blue devils. We was rooting
[15:56] Speaker 1: against jankiness.
[15:57] Speaker 3: Right. Right?
[15:58] Speaker 1: We was rooting against that bullshit. But dude, eight feet tall? More, please.
[16:04] Speaker 1: All right. Now, we got the thunder. I want to
[16:15] Speaker 1: say this about the thunder right fast. I think that
[16:18] Speaker 1: we have somehow managed to undersell just how good the
[16:20] Speaker 1: Thunder are. How good are the Thunder? They are without
[16:25] Speaker 1: their number two scorer and the guy that's going to
[16:29] Speaker 1: make him expendable because he's reasonably similar but cheaper, he
[16:33] Speaker 1: also wasn't playing. This series still went to seven games,
[16:37] Speaker 1: and they still had a chance to win it. This
[16:39] Speaker 1: was not a game that they had no opportunity to get.
[16:42] Speaker 1: The Spurs came out. They weathered the storm. They played
[16:45] Speaker 1: tough through the fourth quarter. All of these things being
[16:47] Speaker 1: down guys, and they still could have won the game.
[16:51] Speaker 1: So I understand when people are like, oh, San Antonio's
[16:54] Speaker 1: going to be doing this for a long time. Well,
[16:55] Speaker 1: that's the same thing you said about Oklahoma City last year. Yeah,
[16:57] Speaker 1: and look what they just did, right? With a depleted roster,
[17:01] Speaker 1: everything else, look what they just did. They got into
[17:03] Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. Shea, this postseason with Shea is weird
[17:09] Speaker 1: because this postseason with Shea has involved him, honestly, being
[17:14] Speaker 1: better than people would like to admit in a lot
[17:16] Speaker 1: of ways. But also, they were outscored with him on
[17:20] Speaker 1: the floor and were a positive point differential with him
[17:23] Speaker 1: off the floor. I don't know what to make of that.
[17:28] Speaker 1: um in game seven they were a minus seven in
[17:31] Speaker 1: his 43 minutes though it's worth noting a lot of
[17:34] Speaker 1: his 43 minutes are going to be the minutes with
[17:36] Speaker 1: victor on the floor right like it's going to be
[17:38] Speaker 1: a thing but he played like you want your mvp
[17:43] Speaker 1: to play in a game seven and unlike previous games
[17:48] Speaker 1: it's one thing to try to draw fouls it's another
[17:52] Speaker 1: thing to try to get calls and what he tries
[17:56] Speaker 1: to do is get calls. He did not do that
[17:59] Speaker 1: in game seven. And I think that people who watched
[18:02] Speaker 1: that observed the difference and treated it with a greater
[18:04] Speaker 1: respect than they had treated the other things that he
[18:07] Speaker 1: had done.
[18:08] Speaker 2: People will always like an awesome mid-range scorer.
[18:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, man, it is fun watching dudes cook. Like,
[18:15] Speaker 1: that's the thing that this NBA doesn't really give you
[18:17] Speaker 1: anymore is dudes who cook in the mid-range. We like
[18:21] Speaker 1: watching dudes cook in the mid-range. He does that. And look,
[18:24] Speaker 1: it was a big game and he came up big
[18:27] Speaker 1: in the big game in a game where nobody else
[18:30] Speaker 1: on the team showed up other than Sir Yes Sir.
[18:33] Speaker 1: Nobody else showed up, right? He came out there and
[18:37] Speaker 1: he did everything he could. And he didn't get it done, right? Like,
[18:42] Speaker 1: I don't think, I think that he could have played
[18:46] Speaker 1: better in this postseason, certainly. But I don't feel like,
[18:51] Speaker 1: I don't feel like we saw anything that should put
[18:53] Speaker 1: you in a position where you reevaluate what you think
[18:56] Speaker 1: of him as a player. It's like, look, it's me
[18:58] Speaker 1: and Cason Wallace out here trying to get this done, right?
[19:03] Speaker 1: That's tough. It's just the chet of it all. And look,
[19:11] Speaker 1: Anybody that's followed me for a while, anybody that's listened
[19:14] Speaker 1: to this show, watched this show for a while, you
[19:17] Speaker 1: guys know how I feel about Chet, right? I think
[19:20] Speaker 1: Chet is an excellent player. I think Chet is going
[19:23] Speaker 1: to go to the Hall of Fame. I think Chet
[19:24] Speaker 1: had an excellent year this year. I just cannot think
[19:31] Speaker 1: of an example. I'm trying to think of it in music.
[19:36] Speaker 4: I can't.
[19:37] Speaker 1: Okay. Here's what has happened to Chet. imagine what it
[19:43] Speaker 1: would have been like if shine had come out right
[19:48] Speaker 1: and shine had dropped and we like yo man you
[19:50] Speaker 1: gotta hit his dude shine man shine's so dope and
[19:54] Speaker 1: he was you know he gonna be next he gonna
[19:57] Speaker 1: be next you remember shine drop everybody thought shine was
[19:59] Speaker 1: gonna be next shine was gonna be next but what
[20:02] Speaker 1: if instead of shine coming after biggie what if biggie
[20:08] Speaker 1: came out after Shine. And it's like, damn, he's just
[20:12] Speaker 1: like Shine, except he's better at everything that Shine does.
[20:17] Speaker 1: Every single bit. That's what happened to Chet. Victor showed
[20:23] Speaker 1: up and everything that we thought Chet could give you.
[20:26] Speaker 1: Chet is seven foot one. Chet can face the basket
[20:29] Speaker 1: and get buckets. Chet can make threes. Chet was the
[20:33] Speaker 1: runner up in defensive player of the year this year, right?
[20:37] Speaker 1: We don't feel like Chet does anything better than Victor
[20:41] Speaker 1: in a way that matters. We just don't. His whole existence,
[20:46] Speaker 1: his whole gimmick, everything that made him special is not
[20:50] Speaker 1: just usurped by this guy, Victor, but he hates you.
[20:55] Speaker 1: Like for the longest time, we would talk about this
[20:58] Speaker 1: and we would say, well, you know, those two guys
[21:00] Speaker 1: don't like each other. I got to be honest with you, man.
[21:02] Speaker 1: The more I think about it, I haven't seen any
[21:04] Speaker 1: evidence that Chet doesn't like Victor. I haven't seen any
[21:07] Speaker 1: of that at all. Victor doesn't like him.
[21:12] Speaker 4: Right?
[21:13] Speaker 1: Man, one of my friends, you made the point that
[21:14] Speaker 1: Chet's at the point of just wanting to get the
[21:16] Speaker 1: microphone and be like, I swear I wasn't even thinking
[21:19] Speaker 1: about you when I did that.
[21:22] Speaker 3: Right?
[21:22] Speaker 1: Like the origin story is strictly they played a game
[21:25] Speaker 1: against each other and Victor fouled out and Chet won
[21:28] Speaker 1: the MVP. That's it. That's all I did. Why are
[21:33] Speaker 1: you so mad at me?
[21:35] Speaker 4: Right?
[21:35] Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys heard the story that
[21:37] Speaker 1: after one of these games, Victor was in the tunnel
[21:41] Speaker 1: and Chet's mama came up to him and was like, hey,
[21:43] Speaker 1: I'm Chet's mom. And Victor was like, I know.
[21:47] Speaker 2: Yo!
[21:48] Speaker 1: To his old earth?
[21:51] Speaker 2: Damn!
[21:52] Speaker 1: And so Chet.
[21:54] Speaker 2: The.
[21:55] Speaker 1: I've heard people make the argument that the Thunder are
[21:57] Speaker 1: going to need to trade Chet. That's not going to happen.
[21:59] Speaker 1: They just don't make players of that particular archetype and
[22:02] Speaker 1: skill set that often. Put it to you like this. Presti,
[22:07] Speaker 1: with the option of keeping James Harden or Serge Ibaka,
[22:10] Speaker 1: took the shot blocker who could shoot long-range jumpers. If
[22:16] Speaker 1: it comes down to Jalen Williams or Chet, I think
[22:19] Speaker 1: they're going to keep Chet.
[22:21] Speaker 2: They make a lot less than those.
[22:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, they just think... I mean, AJ Mitchell apparently is
[22:26] Speaker 1: another Jalen Williams, right? They're going to keep Chet. The
[22:28] Speaker 1: problem they have is this. He is bad for business
[22:32] Speaker 1: as long as San Antonio is going to be their rival.
[22:36] Speaker 4: Right?
[22:37] Speaker 1: Like, he brings... He brings something out of Victor that
[22:41] Speaker 1: ultimately renders himself useless.
[22:44] Speaker 4: Right?
[22:45] Speaker 1: Somebody sent this tweet to me. I got to find it.
[22:48] Speaker 1: My man said this. I thought this was excellent. He says...
[22:51] Speaker 1: It's really wild that Victor becomes visibly powered up when
[22:56] Speaker 1: Chet even looks like he's about to do anything at all.
[22:59] Speaker 1: It's really like a video game. It's really like a
[23:02] Speaker 1: video game buff. Like you can somehow see it and
[23:05] Speaker 1: Chet sees it too.
[23:07] Speaker 2: You see the joy on Victor's face when he dunks
[23:09] Speaker 2: on him with two hands.
[23:11] Speaker 1: Oh man. Or when he would miss free throws and
[23:14] Speaker 1: he claps in all of this. Like Chet's problem is,
[23:19] Speaker 1: is that the other guy hates him. And that's the
[23:21] Speaker 1: best argument for having to trade him. He makes Victor better,
[23:27] Speaker 1: but in the worst way. And look, Chet did not,
[23:32] Speaker 1: on one level, Chet did not play as badly as
[23:34] Speaker 1: I think advertised in that game. Because I think he
[23:37] Speaker 1: played well on defense. The plus minus numbers with him
[23:41] Speaker 1: on the floor are actually pretty good. He just became
[23:44] Speaker 1: terrified of shooting. Reggie Miller was on his neck. That
[23:48] Speaker 1: whole broadcast, just firing him up because he got scared.
[23:52] Speaker 2: Visibly scared.
[23:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's 25 years old. He hasn't done this that often, right?
[23:58] Speaker 1: He was, and look, we saw Jordan do this to guys, right?
[24:02] Speaker 1: Like he just, he's in his head in a much
[24:07] Speaker 1: different way than one would have expected from a player of,
[24:10] Speaker 1: I mean, Chuck Holmes, third team All-NBA this year. But
[24:14] Speaker 1: he was in his head. Did you see the video
[24:17] Speaker 1: of Jason Williams looking like he was staying at the
[24:19] Speaker 1: Super 8? Did you see that? Yes. Yeah, so Jason Williams,
[24:24] Speaker 1: West Virginia Jason Williams.
[24:25] Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like he has some experiences in the
[24:28] Speaker 2: Super 8.
[24:29] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[24:29] Speaker 1: Yeah. I was just, because apparently he was in Oklahoma City.
[24:34] Speaker 1: Because I'm looking at Jason Williams like, everything indicates that
[24:38] Speaker 1: you took care of your money. Right. There had to
[24:40] Speaker 1: be a better hotel room that you could get. Even
[24:43] Speaker 1: if he had to go to Norman and stay at
[24:44] Speaker 1: the Embassy Suites or stay at the Haunted Hotel, there
[24:46] Speaker 1: seemed to have to be something. But he was in
[24:48] Speaker 1: a hotel that I personally would not have wanted to
[24:51] Speaker 1: stay in. And he was just chit. It was just
[24:55] Speaker 1: all about how chit was not getting it done. And
[24:58] Speaker 1: you heard the disdain in his voice. And I think
[25:04] Speaker 1: I know where he was coming from. I think chit
[25:09] Speaker 1: and Jason Williams... I feel like they probably in the
[25:13] Speaker 1: same group chat. And that group chat, it got Jason
[25:19] Speaker 1: Williams in it. It got Bobby Sora in it. Tom
[25:25] Speaker 1: Chambers probably in there. Danny Ainge, he's in the group chat.
[25:32] Speaker 1: It got old cats. Kevin McHale, Larry Bird, he in it,
[25:36] Speaker 1: but he don't really text that much.
[25:38] Speaker 2: He's not texting a lot.
[25:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
[25:40] Speaker 2: He sends one every few months and it's good.
[25:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he sees everything. Mark Price, he
[25:48] Speaker 1: in the group chat. And that group chat is called
[25:52] Speaker 1: twice as hard.
[25:54] Speaker 2: You know?
[25:56] Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta try twice as hard to be treated
[25:59] Speaker 1: like you half as good. You know what I mean?
[26:03] Speaker 1: And They all got that chat. And look, man, they
[26:05] Speaker 1: be talking to each other. They got a lot of
[26:07] Speaker 1: unique experiences that they deal with that other people just simply,
[26:12] Speaker 1: you know, cannot relate to.
[26:13] Speaker 2: Is Bill Lambert in the group chat?
[26:15] Speaker 1: No, no, no. Larry Bird said it's him or me.
[26:18] Speaker 1: You know, so like he's not allowed in there, you know,
[26:21] Speaker 1: and they talk about it. And then they get together
[26:23] Speaker 1: to talk about like they had a safe space where
[26:25] Speaker 1: they could, you know, Talk about the stuff that black
[26:28] Speaker 1: people do, they get on their nerves. Not stuff that's racist, right?
[26:32] Speaker 2: Just get on their nerves.
[26:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, like I was talking to a white guy I
[26:35] Speaker 1: know that works in a very black space, and he
[26:37] Speaker 1: made a point that I had not considered. He was like,
[26:39] Speaker 1: living as a white man, whenever one of these political
[26:42] Speaker 1: issues that comes up with a racial tone, he's like,
[26:45] Speaker 1: hey man, black people ain't giving you no leeway. No
[26:49] Speaker 1: rope whatsoever. Ain't none of it. The littlest bit of
[26:52] Speaker 1: deviation for being down with us. And they like, see,
[26:55] Speaker 1: that's what I.
[26:57] Speaker 2: Always knew about him.
[26:57] Speaker 1: I always knew. I thought about that. That's a lot
[27:00] Speaker 1: of pressure that these white boys in these situations beyond.
[27:03] Speaker 2: You see me going like this.
[27:05] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[27:05] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[27:06] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[27:06] Speaker 1: They all there.
[27:06] Speaker 6: Right.
[27:07] Speaker 1: And so they all, they all in that group chat, man.
[27:11] Speaker 1: And they had been encouraging shit. You know, they had been,
[27:15] Speaker 1: they had been really, they had been really helping them out. And,
[27:22] Speaker 1: Ben Simmons was the cop, Ryan, that you had for
[27:26] Speaker 1: that performance. And look, it works. Ben Simmons would still
[27:28] Speaker 1: play some defense, right? He put up a Simonsian performance.
[27:36] Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same cop of great player, scared
[27:40] Speaker 2: of the rim.
[27:41] Speaker 1: Yep, still give you other things, right? But no, scared
[27:43] Speaker 1: of the rim. And so they was all there, and
[27:48] Speaker 1: nobody said anything whole after the game, man. Nobody had
[27:52] Speaker 1: nothing to say in the entire group chat, man. And
[27:56] Speaker 1: you know, in a time like that, it's really sad, man.
[27:59] Speaker 1: Chris Mullin, he ain't have no idea what to say
[28:04] Speaker 1: at that point in time. Ain't no Europeans in the
[28:05] Speaker 1: chat also, by the way, just so you understand. Birdman,
[28:09] Speaker 1: Birdman was just kind of down about it. Mike Miller
[28:14] Speaker 1: was like, should I say something, right? Like, is this
[28:17] Speaker 1: my chance to get in here? Scott Pollard, you know,
[28:21] Speaker 1: he got a sense of humor. So he was just
[28:23] Speaker 1: in there telling jokes, talking about, you know, all kinds
[28:26] Speaker 1: of other stuff. Rafe LaFrance was like, damn, they just
[28:29] Speaker 1: invited me to the chat last week.
[28:31] Speaker 2: It's too early to pop in.
[28:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, too early to go there, boy. Tyler Hansbro was
[28:35] Speaker 1: so mad, he ain't know what to do. Right? Like,
[28:38] Speaker 1: he's just breathing. He's like, damn, man. You know, because
[28:42] Speaker 1: they were all rooting for him. You know? Every single
[28:46] Speaker 1: one of them. That's where they were, man. They wanted
[28:49] Speaker 1: better things to happen. And then finally, After Dan Marley
[28:54] Speaker 1: tried to start a conversation about something completely different, Larry
[28:59] Speaker 1: Bird just finally sent the text. Can't play like a
[29:04] Speaker 1: bitch and think you're going to win. He hadn't sent
[29:10] Speaker 1: one in years. Some people had even forgot that he
[29:14] Speaker 1: was in the chat. And then the worst thing happened
[29:18] Speaker 1: for Chet. he noticed that the messages kind of stopped.
[29:23] Speaker 1: Like he thought it was still the silence. And the
[29:27] Speaker 1: next thing you know, he looked at the bottom of
[29:29] Speaker 1: the chat and you know what it said? Luke Cornette
[29:36] Speaker 1: has joined the group. Luke Cornette came in there and
[29:45] Speaker 1: he showed the gif of him blocking that shot and
[29:51] Speaker 1: he put in there. Y'all know he's black, right? Impressed
[29:56] Speaker 1: sin because he was trying to ingratiate himself to the
[30:01] Speaker 1: new crew. And Chris Mullen was like, was that supposed
[30:04] Speaker 1: to mean? He's like, I was just playing. I was
[30:07] Speaker 1: just playing. They're like, of course we knew. He used
[30:09] Speaker 1: to be in the chat, but we had to kick
[30:10] Speaker 1: him out. And Chet had to watch that, man. Everybody
[30:13] Speaker 1: was just patting Cornette on the back. Good job, dog.
[30:17] Speaker 1: Good job. Way to do it.
[30:18] Speaker 2: Way to hold it down.
[30:19] Speaker 1: Because the truth is, And I hope that there's somebody
[30:27] Speaker 1: that can help Chet out with this, right? Nick Collison.
[30:32] Speaker 1: He's not in the group chat. He hadn't been invited,
[30:35] Speaker 1: but that's good because he don't know nothing that's going
[30:37] Speaker 1: on over there. And he, you know, Mr. Thunder, he
[30:39] Speaker 1: can come put his arm around Chet, but he's going
[30:42] Speaker 1: to have to be honest with him and be like,
[30:45] Speaker 1: you know, you set us back last night, right? It's
[30:49] Speaker 1: not just about you. It's about all of us. It's
[30:53] Speaker 1: about all of us. Maybe you should pay some attention
[30:56] Speaker 1: to that Luke Cornett. You see how he rose to
[31:00] Speaker 1: the occasion? That's what you've been going through, man. That's
[31:04] Speaker 1: what I'm just saying. Maybe y'all don't need to be
[31:06] Speaker 1: so mean to my guy. He got the weight of
[31:10] Speaker 1: the world on his shoulders right now. He holding it
[31:14] Speaker 1: down for all the American whites. He's trying to do it.
[31:21] Speaker 1: He's trying to do it. Then he looked down in
[31:24] Speaker 1: the group chat again, and they was like, Paige Beckers
[31:26] Speaker 1: is into the chat. And she was like, psh, couldn't
[31:29] Speaker 1: have been me. I ain't never come up short like that.
[31:31] Speaker 1: You know, they both from Minnesota. And they was like, no,
[31:34] Speaker 1: we thought you was going to come in and encourage him. Psh,
[31:36] Speaker 1: why would I do that? What you talking about? Psh,
[31:41] Speaker 1: me and my mama, we ain't about that at all.
[31:44] Speaker 1: So anyway, I think Chet will be fine. I think
[31:48] Speaker 1: this will all work itself out, you know, but, uh,
[31:51] Speaker 1: Maybe he need to go hang out with some monks, right?
[31:55] Speaker 1: He need to do something because I don't know if
[31:57] Speaker 1: you saw his post-game interviews in the locker room. That
[32:00] Speaker 1: boy looks sad. And how could he not? How could
[32:03] Speaker 1: he not feel like it's all his fault? How could
[32:06] Speaker 1: he not, right? It ain't just about him. It ain't
[32:09] Speaker 1: just about the Blue Devils. It's about something way bigger. And,
[32:16] Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not going to say that part. We're
[32:20] Speaker 1: just going to go to the.

[37:42] Speaker 2: We know you can't be on top of all the
[37:44] Speaker 2: news and information of the day. No need for the
[37:47] Speaker 2: social media feeds. We got you. Now, if you haven't heard.
[37:52] Speaker 2: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, on Thursday, the
[37:54] Speaker 2: NBA overwhelmingly agreed to change the draft lottery format. A
[37:58] Speaker 2: couple changes. It'll expand the lottery from 14 to 16,
[38:01] Speaker 2: so that includes the eighth seed in each year's draft.
[38:06] Speaker 2: end each year's lottery and also is flattening the odds
[38:10] Speaker 2: for the top three teams in what they're calling a
[38:12] Speaker 2: relegation zone. But what was your biggest takeaway from this change?
[38:16] Speaker 1: Well, also, I think it's important to note that you
[38:18] Speaker 1: can't get a top three pick or top five pick
[38:20] Speaker 1: seven in three straight years.
[38:21] Speaker 4: Correct.
[38:22] Speaker 1: Top five pick three straight years.
[38:23] Speaker 2: Yes. Sorry, sorry, San Antonio. You got that. No one
[38:27] Speaker 2: else can.
[38:27] Speaker 1: Okay, so that part I think is very interesting because
[38:30] Speaker 1: I see a lot of people push back on it.
[38:31] Speaker 1: Number one, having San Antonio's the rare team that's made
[38:34] Speaker 1: this thing work.
[38:35] Speaker 2: Right.
[38:36] Speaker 1: Like the champions of recent years have not been powered
[38:39] Speaker 1: by top picks. The Warriors were powered by a number
[38:43] Speaker 1: seven pick. Yes, they wound up bringing in Durant, and
[38:45] Speaker 1: you could count Andrew Bogut if you want, right? But
[38:47] Speaker 1: that's not how they got that done. The Raptors, when
[38:50] Speaker 1: they won that championship, Kawhi Leonard and those other guys,
[38:54] Speaker 1: we're not talking about top three picks. Now, the Lakers,
[38:57] Speaker 1: Anthony Davis and LeBron James, that's a little different. Giannis
[39:00] Speaker 1: was what, the 13th pick?
[39:01] Speaker 2: Jokic, obviously, in the 40s.
[39:03] Speaker 1: Right, Jokic. I guess they had those two number three
[39:07] Speaker 1: picks with the Celtics. Look how long that took in
[39:10] Speaker 1: order for them to get there. We can go up
[39:13] Speaker 1: and down the line. The point, Oklahoma City, other than Chet,
[39:18] Speaker 1: we're not talking about those upper echelon picks. That hasn't
[39:22] Speaker 1: been the path to success, number one.
[39:23] Speaker 2: I mean, the Knicks have, what, Carl Anthony Towns? Right.
[39:27] Speaker 1: And again, they got him, how many years, like 10 years?
[39:30] Speaker 1: into his career after this has happened. But I bring
[39:33] Speaker 1: that up because do you remember when in New York,
[39:37] Speaker 1: the congestion pricing thing was coming up? So for people
[39:40] Speaker 1: who don't know, they're trying to cut down on the
[39:42] Speaker 1: number of cars coming into the city to improve air
[39:46] Speaker 1: quality and all of that stuff. And so It was
[39:48] Speaker 1: this huge tax on cars that came into the city
[39:51] Speaker 1: and were traveling in Midtown, right? And one of the arguments,
[39:57] Speaker 1: I was talking to somebody once about it, and was
[39:58] Speaker 1: saying what would really stink about that is, well, what
[40:02] Speaker 1: if you lived in New Jersey and you're playing, you
[40:05] Speaker 1: drive into work every day? Well, now the math on
[40:08] Speaker 1: you driving into work every day has changed. Isn't that
[40:11] Speaker 1: unfair to that person? Well- Unfortunately, what we're trying to
[40:14] Speaker 1: do is stop cars from coming into the city.
[40:17] Speaker 2: We're trying to stop that exact situation. Right.
[40:20] Speaker 1: What we're doing is we're making omelets. And what do
[40:25] Speaker 1: we do when we make omelets? We break eggs. some
[40:29] Speaker 1: eggs are going to get broken, right? Yeah, it stinks
[40:32] Speaker 1: for you if you are the Grizzlies and you made
[40:34] Speaker 1: this trade with Utah because you thought next year's pick
[40:37] Speaker 1: from Utah might be the number one overall pick, though
[40:39] Speaker 1: I think you were looking at this wrong if you
[40:42] Speaker 1: thought that they were still going to be tanking it
[40:43] Speaker 1: out going to next year. Like, I don't think that's
[40:46] Speaker 1: going to happen. But anyway, yeah, that's what you thought
[40:49] Speaker 1: was going to happen. That is why you made the trade.
[40:51] Speaker 1: Things done changed, right? If you want to get rid
[40:56] Speaker 1: of tanking or to disincentivize tanking, you're going to have
[41:00] Speaker 1: to do things like this. And so, yeah, the Spurs
[41:03] Speaker 1: were able to put a team together like this, and
[41:05] Speaker 1: now they're not going to be able to. Oh, well,
[41:09] Speaker 1: or you're not going to be able to do the
[41:10] Speaker 1: same thing. Oh, well, the big reason the Spurs were
[41:13] Speaker 1: able to pull that off, though, was not because they
[41:15] Speaker 1: had the picks, because of how well they did with
[41:17] Speaker 1: the picks. The Rockets could have taken Stephon Castle. Instead,
[41:20] Speaker 1: they took Reed Shepard. Right? Like, they didn't just get
[41:26] Speaker 1: there because they had the picks. is the point that
[41:28] Speaker 1: I'm making. But either way, hey man, do you want
[41:31] Speaker 1: to do something about tanking or not? And what happens
[41:34] Speaker 1: is people want their, people want this to be a
[41:38] Speaker 1: change in, like, this is a, what they had was
[41:45] Speaker 1: a Pareto optimal solution, which is to say a solution
[41:48] Speaker 1: where you cannot, in a Pareto optimal solution, you cannot
[41:52] Speaker 1: improve things for one party unless you make things worse
[41:55] Speaker 1: for another, okay? All that to say, there was never
[41:58] Speaker 1: going to be a way to come up with a
[42:00] Speaker 1: solution that did not make things worse for somebody.
[42:04] Speaker 2: Right.
[42:05] Speaker 1: And this is what happened.
[42:08] Speaker 2: And the thing I think they're really trying to solve
[42:10] Speaker 2: for is the embarrassment that happened at the end of
[42:13] Speaker 2: this year.
[42:14] Speaker 1: Can't have it. And what they're going to say is,
[42:18] Speaker 1: what is your excuse for not trying to win?
[42:20] Speaker 6: Now.
[42:22] Speaker 1: What may still happen is people deciding, oh, you got
[42:25] Speaker 1: a little bit of an injury. Just make sure you
[42:26] Speaker 1: don't get this bubble wrap, guys, or whatever it is.
[42:28] Speaker 1: But you don't really have to do this. I think
[42:31] Speaker 1: what it is going to do that I think is
[42:32] Speaker 1: great is that it becomes in everyone's best interest to
[42:35] Speaker 1: get their young players more minutes.
[42:37] Speaker 3: Right.
[42:38] Speaker 6: Right?
[42:38] Speaker 1: Like these guys toward the end of the year, get
[42:40] Speaker 1: them more minutes. Like when we would talk about all
[42:42] Speaker 1: the injuries that Anthony Davis would have, I would never
[42:44] Speaker 1: know because they had so many years where it was
[42:46] Speaker 1: impossible to tell if he was really hurt or they
[42:48] Speaker 1: were just sitting them down. Right? Get these guys more minutes.
[42:51] Speaker 1: Help make them better players. Give them something to go through.
[42:54] Speaker 1: All of those things. But the idea, well, now somebody
[42:58] Speaker 1: won't be able to do da-da-da. You were mad when
[43:00] Speaker 1: they were trying to do it. Pick one.
[43:04] Speaker 5: Damn.
[43:05] Speaker 2: Right? It's a lot of People complaining about a thing.
[43:11] Speaker 2: A very easy target to launch criticism at makes a change.
[43:15] Speaker 2: People are not happy with the change.
[43:16] Speaker 1: It is just the way we treat this league. Nothing
[43:20] Speaker 1: is ever good enough.
[43:22] Speaker 2: All right. And finally, the Jackson Dart situation continues. Both he,
[43:27] Speaker 2: Abdul Carter, and Jameis Winston have addressed the media after
[43:33] Speaker 2: his recent comments about introducing President Trump. Trump has also
[43:37] Speaker 2: weighed in and doubled down. Bo, what have you made
[43:40] Speaker 2: of the story continuing?
[43:41] Speaker 1: All right. So I want to make a point about
[43:44] Speaker 1: Abdul Carter. I'm going to be honest about this. I
[43:49] Speaker 1: don't know if you remember this, but he wore number
[43:51] Speaker 1: 11 at Penn State. You know, that's a big deal
[43:53] Speaker 1: for them. Like LeVar Arrington, Michael Parsons, you know, number 11.
[43:56] Speaker 1: It's a big deal for linebackers there. And he said
[44:00] Speaker 1: that he wanted to wear number 11 with the Giants,
[44:02] Speaker 1: but that is retired for Phil Simms. And so when
[44:07] Speaker 1: they said he could not wear number 11, Abdul Carter said, well,
[44:11] Speaker 1: I guess I'll wear number 56 then. And Ryan, you're
[44:15] Speaker 1: too young to remember this Lawrence Taylor thing in real time,
[44:18] Speaker 1: but buddy, I can't.
[44:20] Speaker 2: I've seen the internets.
[44:22] Speaker 1: Oh, buddy.
[44:23] Speaker 2: Okay. I was not around in real time, but I
[44:26] Speaker 2: think I still get it.
[44:28] Speaker 5: Woo, boy.
[44:29] Speaker 2: Look here, man.
[44:30] Speaker 1: Abdul Carter. I didn't know. I couldn't tell if he
[44:34] Speaker 1: didn't know who were number 56. Couldn't tell. I couldn't
[44:39] Speaker 1: tell what he was doing. So I assumed that he
[44:42] Speaker 1: was a moron. Just on the basis of that. I
[44:47] Speaker 1: assumed that something wasn't right with that boy. I could
[44:52] Speaker 1: not have been more impressed by the way that he
[44:55] Speaker 1: handled The press availability on this one, and I no
[44:58] Speaker 1: longer believe that about him.
[44:59] Speaker 2: Zero back down.
[45:00] Speaker 1: It's not just zero back down. He was very clear
[45:04] Speaker 1: in what he said, and he was just like, hey, man,
[45:06] Speaker 1: based on what I stand for and what I believe in,
[45:09] Speaker 1: if you are somebody who is representing me and you
[45:14] Speaker 1: through some level of implication are saying that basically you
[45:18] Speaker 1: support Trump and you represent the New York Giants make
[45:21] Speaker 1: it look like I support Trump and I need people
[45:23] Speaker 1: to understand that I do not. But he was very
[45:27] Speaker 1: clear in what it is and why it is that
[45:29] Speaker 1: he felt that way and I applaud him for that
[45:33] Speaker 1: because that's not an easy conversation necessarily to have for
[45:36] Speaker 1: a lot of people under the circumstances that he was
[45:39] Speaker 1: in and he did that. Jackson Dart, on the other hand,
[45:42] Speaker 1: had four minutes to talk about it. And this is
[45:48] Speaker 1: my thing about, generally speaking, right-wing politics in this country.
[45:53] Speaker 1: And I guess specifically this MAGA movement or whatever it is,
[45:56] Speaker 1: I always say we got this weird thing where the
[46:00] Speaker 1: sort of stuff that you can say that can get
[46:03] Speaker 1: you fired is the sort of stuff that you can
[46:05] Speaker 1: say that will also get you elected. There's a certain
[46:11] Speaker 1: ethos or a certain way that you speak and certain
[46:12] Speaker 1: ideas that you can express in a political place that is,
[46:17] Speaker 1: quite honestly, not allowed in what many consider to be
[46:21] Speaker 1: polite society. It's a lot to unpack as to how
[46:27] Speaker 1: that incongruence is taking place, but the bottom line is
[46:29] Speaker 1: that it exists. I bring that up to say Jackson
[46:34] Speaker 1: Dart could not say like what it is that he
[46:39] Speaker 1: liked about Trump. That's a really difficult thing for people
[46:43] Speaker 1: to admit or say out loud, right? So like, what
[46:47] Speaker 1: is it about Trump that makes you like, what does it,
[46:49] Speaker 1: you know, you can give that whole, it's a unique
[46:51] Speaker 1: opportunity to introduce the president of the United States. It is,
[46:53] Speaker 1: but that don't mean you got to do it. Like
[46:56] Speaker 1: you decided to do that. You decided to attach yourself
[46:58] Speaker 1: to that and that's fine. But I came away from
[47:00] Speaker 1: listening to him talk, being like, oh, you can't even
[47:02] Speaker 1: say out loud what it is that you stand for
[47:04] Speaker 1: about him. You can't even do that. And that, I think,
[47:09] Speaker 1: generally speaking, should give people pause about what they're doing
[47:14] Speaker 1: and why they're doing it. If you can't say it,
[47:18] Speaker 1: that's my thought. And so you wound up with Abdul
[47:20] Speaker 1: Carter clearly articulating where he stands. Jackson Dart just tried
[47:25] Speaker 1: not to make it worse, right? And then Jameis. I
[47:32] Speaker 1: was talking to my man Dexter about this with Jameis,
[47:34] Speaker 1: and he was like, imagine what Jameis would say in
[47:38] Speaker 1: the locker room to Jackson Dart about everything that was
[47:41] Speaker 1: going on. And lucky for us, we didn't have to
[47:44] Speaker 1: imagine because they made Jameis Winston available to the media.
[47:49] Speaker 1: And I got to tell you, if I was the Giants,
[47:53] Speaker 1: I wouldn't have allowed that. I personally would not have
[47:59] Speaker 1: the stomach wondering what in God's name this man is
[48:03] Speaker 1: about to say.
[48:03] Speaker 2: Could be anything.
[48:05] Speaker 1: And guess what? It could be anything. And what did
[48:08] Speaker 1: he say?
[48:10] Speaker 4: Everything.
[48:12] Speaker 1: He made a comparison to the 16th Street Baptist Church
[48:15] Speaker 1: being bombed and everything that went on with that. What
[48:19] Speaker 1: else did he talk about? I felt like I saw
[48:20] Speaker 1: like three different clips. I can't.
[48:21] Speaker 4: It was.
[48:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, he talked about the bombing. He talked about, you know,
[48:26] Speaker 2: how society isn't perfect.
[48:29] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[48:31] Speaker 2: He said a lot. But did he say anything?
[48:35] Speaker 1: There you go. He said a lot, but did he
[48:37] Speaker 1: say anything? It wasn't quite coherent. I talked to somebody
[48:40] Speaker 1: who was covering the event and said the hardest thing
[48:42] Speaker 1: was not to bust out laughing right there under those circumstances.
[48:47] Speaker 1: It had the out-of-control freight train element of I'm a
[48:53] Speaker 1: soldier at Keller Winslow at Miami, where people were recording
[48:57] Speaker 1: it like, Or.
[49:01] Speaker 2: It's like a toast at a wedding that someone just
[49:03] Speaker 2: had too many drinks and you're like, when is this
[49:06] Speaker 2: going to wrap?
[49:07] Speaker 1: Oh my God. But I will say it was riveting.
[49:09] Speaker 3: Yes.
[49:10] Speaker 1: I couldn't take my eyes off him as he was
[49:12] Speaker 1: offering all this. He was just all over the place.
[49:16] Speaker 1: His mega church is going to be so cracking. And
[49:18] Speaker 1: the wildest thing was, he wasn't making any sense, but
[49:22] Speaker 1: he kind of made some sense. And so many people
[49:26] Speaker 1: on the Internet ate that shit up. Like the idea
[49:29] Speaker 1: that Jameis has become like. He's become like the Yogi
[49:35] Speaker 1: Berra kind of figure, right? Like me and Shady's always
[49:37] Speaker 1: talking about this, that people hated Cam Newton so much
[49:39] Speaker 1: and were so threatened by him that he was out
[49:41] Speaker 1: here using words wrong and nobody even said anything about
[49:43] Speaker 1: it because they were too busy being mad that the
[49:45] Speaker 1: girl might want to slide him something. You know what
[49:47] Speaker 1: I'm saying? That they didn't even get around to things
[49:49] Speaker 1: that were right there. They used to love to laugh
[49:51] Speaker 1: at with people. Jameis, Jameis has become like.
[49:55] Speaker 2: Has Jameis become the pinnacle?
[49:57] Speaker 1: He's been... Oh yeah, he's been... He has become like
[50:00] Speaker 1: the beloved country, like folksy guy.
[50:04] Speaker 2: Which is wild considering where we were 10 years ago.
[50:07] Speaker 2: All of it.
[50:09] Speaker 1: All of it, right? Like, the dude, forget it. Even
[50:12] Speaker 1: if you get past what happened, did or did not
[50:15] Speaker 1: happen at Florida State, right? The man got suspended in
[50:20] Speaker 1: the NFL because the allegation was that he sat down
[50:24] Speaker 1: in the front seat of the Uber and immediately put
[50:27] Speaker 1: his hand between the driver's legs.
[50:29] Speaker 4: A woman.
[50:30] Speaker 1: Immediately. Didn't even wait. And they gave him six games
[50:35] Speaker 1: or something like that for doing that. So, like, track record.
[50:39] Speaker 1: He was a loathed figure. He went from being beloved
[50:43] Speaker 1: to loathed. And then he just was really fun to
[50:48] Speaker 1: watch football. Like, that was the best comparison of what
[50:50] Speaker 1: he had to say, is that he basically threw 30
[50:53] Speaker 1: touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
[50:55] Speaker 2: The Jameis Winston experience. Yes.
[50:57] Speaker 1: Like, he's become... That, an incoherent, lovable mess. And I
[51:04] Speaker 1: have no idea how that happened. Ryan, I told you,
[51:07] Speaker 1: I've mentioned this other show a few times. A couple
[51:09] Speaker 1: summers ago, I'm just minding my own business, sitting in
[51:11] Speaker 1: Mortarside Park on a Sunday morning, and he wasn't even
[51:13] Speaker 1: playing for the Giants yet. And I look up and
[51:16] Speaker 1: it's Jameis. What are you doing here?
[51:19] Speaker 2: All right, Bo. A lot of great voicemails this week.
[51:27] Speaker 2: Here's our first.
[51:29] Speaker 5: Hey, Bo. Hey, Ryan.
[51:31] Speaker 4: My name is Ev. I'm originally from Kansas City, Missouri,
[51:35] Speaker 4: but I'm out here living in Hawaii the same way
[51:37] Speaker 4: any black person does, either on vacation or in the military.
[51:39] Speaker 4: I'm the latter. Anyway, I just want to say that
[51:44] Speaker 4: I'm very grateful for you for helping me discover the
[51:47] Speaker 4: magic and the wonders of Joel Anderson. And the reason is,
[51:51] Speaker 4: is because, you know, I'm not really a fan of
[51:54] Speaker 4: being parasocial and all these like parasocial relationships. Like I'm
[51:58] Speaker 4: As much as I've watched you over the past several years,
[52:00] Speaker 4: I don't feel like I know you personally. And if
[52:02] Speaker 4: I ever did walk up and see you, I would
[52:05] Speaker 4: show up with respect, but I'm not going to come
[52:08] Speaker 4: any kind of way. Then again, I don't know if
[52:10] Speaker 4: you're ever going to actually make it to the real Honolulu.
[52:12] Speaker 4: I'm not talking about no damn Honolulu blue. Anyway, but
[52:16] Speaker 4: I'm grateful for somebody like Joel Anderson because in the
[52:18] Speaker 4: world where people are trying to be parasocial and weird
[52:21] Speaker 4: and try to act like they know people, I think
[52:24] Speaker 4: the reason why people might feel some type of way
[52:26] Speaker 4: about Joe and are quick to, like, snap at him
[52:28] Speaker 4: or whatever is because Joe is, like, a real person and, like,
[52:31] Speaker 4: a real friend. Or even worse, he's, well, he's you.
[52:35] Speaker 4: You know, he's a hater. He's a grade-A hater. And
[52:38] Speaker 4: he's you. You hate yourself. A lot of people hate themselves.
[52:42] Speaker 4: And it's hilarious because it's well-timed and it's very comedic
[52:46] Speaker 4: and it's enjoyable. Like, Joe feels like somebody you know
[52:49] Speaker 4: you actually go to work with, go to church with,
[52:51] Speaker 4: and do things with. You might think, well, how are
[52:53] Speaker 4: church-going people haters? Again, you do not know what hate
[52:56] Speaker 4: is until you've met Christian love. Anyway, that being said,
[53:01] Speaker 4: love the show. Appreciate what you do. And again, thank
[53:05] Speaker 4: you for Joel, because that has really inspired me to
[53:08] Speaker 4: achieve my true level of hatred. Much love.
[53:11] Speaker 1: Bye. I love that Joel has become so relatable. He
[53:17] Speaker 1: blames me in van. And I'm like, actually, no. I
[53:20] Speaker 1: think we have introduced people to somebody that they didn't
[53:25] Speaker 1: know that they loved.
[53:27] Speaker 2: Right. Did you hear a negative word about Joel on that?
[53:29] Speaker 2: I didn't.
[53:30] Speaker 1: I didn't hear a single one. I did not hear
[53:33] Speaker 1: a single one. No, Joel was not happy. He was like, man,
[53:36] Speaker 1: the phone didn't even ring when you called me on
[53:38] Speaker 1: my birthday.
[53:39] Speaker 2: I don't believe you.
[53:41] Speaker 1: No, no, no. I do believe him because this is
[53:44] Speaker 1: so great. I don't think he buys me saying this.
[53:46] Speaker 1: A couple of days earlier, he had been talking about
[53:48] Speaker 1: how he wasn't sure if he should just spend the
[53:51] Speaker 1: money on a new iPhone. Like he was just being cheap.
[53:53] Speaker 1: He didn't get to get a new iPhone. And his
[53:55] Speaker 1: wife got him a new iPhone for his birthday because
[53:58] Speaker 1: that iPhone had was so functionally useless.
[54:01] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[54:02] Speaker 1: That like you when your wife or your girl gets
[54:05] Speaker 1: you something that you already own as a gift yeah
[54:09] Speaker 1: it is because she's sick of hearing you complain about whatever's.
[54:11] Speaker 2: Wrong or trying to reach you and your phone don't
[54:13] Speaker 2: work yeah.
[54:14] Speaker 1: Yes yeah yeah or or she knows your shit is
[54:17] Speaker 1: broke and you refuse to acknowledge it uh.
[54:20] Speaker 2: Of course all right here's our next one hey my
[54:23] Speaker 2: name is ryan calling from somerville a big fan I
[54:26] Speaker 2: was watching Wemba Yama give Chet and the Thunder the work.
[54:29] Speaker 6: Last night, and I can't remember a one-sided beef where
[54:33] Speaker 6: the one with the beef is so much better, so
[54:35] Speaker 6: clearly better.
[54:36] Speaker 2: I was wondering, have you ever.
[54:38] Speaker 6: Seen or covered anything like this where the guy with
[54:42] Speaker 6: the beef is just dogging on somebody who is so
[54:47] Speaker 6: clearly not as good?
[54:49] Speaker 2: Thank you. Have a good one.
[54:51] Speaker 1: Oh, no, that's an easy answer. Every beef M &
[54:54] Speaker 1: M ever had.
[54:56] Speaker 2: Oh, interesting. That's not where I was going to go.
[54:58] Speaker 1: Eminem versus the Insane Clown Posse. Eminem versus Everlast. Eminem
[55:03] Speaker 1: versus Fred Durst. Eminem versus Benzino. It's a long line.
[55:09] Speaker 1: Nobody could really wrap one of those problems for a
[55:13] Speaker 1: number of reasons. But the guys who couldn't, especially his
[55:16] Speaker 1: fellow Cajuns, they would pull up and it would not
[55:22] Speaker 1: go well.
[55:22] Speaker 2: Can you imagine the joy if Eminem showed up To
[55:26] Speaker 2: the twice as hard group chat? Oh, my God.
[55:31] Speaker 1: That would, oh, man. You know what, though? They would
[55:33] Speaker 1: need to have, like, the twice as hard, like, the
[55:36] Speaker 1: young boy twice as hard, right? Because Larry Bird ain't trying.
[55:39] Speaker 2: To hear that shit.
[55:41] Speaker 4: Right?
[55:42] Speaker 1: Like, we would need to figure out the dividing line
[55:44] Speaker 1: on that, but you are not wrong.
[55:46] Speaker 2: All right, here's our next one.
[55:47] Speaker 5: What's up, Bo Money? This is Jimmy from Chicago. The
[55:53] Speaker 5: Spurs fan who can't stand Scottie Pippen. I got a
[55:57] Speaker 5: question for all my Chicago Bulls fans. I was teased
[56:03] Speaker 5: a lot. Even by you, you told me I just
[56:05] Speaker 5: missed out on six rings and we got five rings.
[56:10] Speaker 5: But to the Bulls fans at home, I just wanted
[56:12] Speaker 5: to know. We won five rings, bottomed out, and we
[56:17] Speaker 5: made it back to the fighting room before the Bulls did.
[56:20] Speaker 5: I wanted to have that fear. I know that's real
[56:23] Speaker 5: petty to say this, but... to my bull friends be
[56:27] Speaker 5: back Spurs back those great series check you gotta go
[56:32] Speaker 5: see the Wizards man I think you might because you
[56:36] Speaker 5: guys have no heart you got straight positive series let
[56:41] Speaker 5: me know what you think about them and Spurs later.
[56:48] Speaker 1: So it's funny that he called from Chicago talked to
[56:50] Speaker 1: my good buddy Mike Hitman the other day he gave
[56:53] Speaker 1: me a call I can't remember all of them, but
[56:56] Speaker 1: he had like five different people that he wanted to slap.
[57:02] Speaker 1: I don't want to put names on it because I
[57:04] Speaker 1: don't want it to be confused or anything else. But
[57:06] Speaker 1: he had about five different people that he wanted to slap.
[57:11] Speaker 1: And he told me, you know, I know the kind
[57:14] Speaker 1: of people Mike hangs out with, if you know anything about,
[57:18] Speaker 1: you know, Mike said that he wanted to show me
[57:22] Speaker 1: a video. Because he was, him and his partners, they
[57:26] Speaker 1: tried to bring back strippers wearing cowboy hats. And so
[57:31] Speaker 1: he sent me a video that he wanted me to
[57:35] Speaker 1: check out. I haven't responded to him yet. But Ryan,
[57:39] Speaker 1: I just sent the video to you because you're going
[57:42] Speaker 1: to have.
[57:42] Speaker 3: To see this too. Don't say anything about what it is.
[57:46] Speaker 3: Just give it a watch. You don't have to watch
[57:53] Speaker 3: the whole thing.
[57:54] Speaker 1: To get the point.
[57:55] Speaker 2: I got the point.
[57:57] Speaker 1: I didn't think that was what he meant.
[57:59] Speaker 2: Neither did I.
[58:04] Speaker 1: I didn't think that was what he meant.
[58:08] Speaker 2: Oh, man.
[58:09] Speaker 1: I love that guy.
[58:10] Speaker 2: He's the best.
[58:11] Speaker 1: Another case where anything is on the board. I wish
[58:16] Speaker 1: DJ Mike Hitman played for the Giants. But hey, ladies
