In this meditation, Fr. Donncha Ó hAodha invites us to enter into each scene of the Joyful Mysteries through the eyes of the Blessed Mother. Drawing inspiration from St. Josemaria’s meditations on the Holy Rosary, Fr. Donncha connects these mysteries of the life of Christ to His work in our lives today: “\[St. Josemaria call us\] to be contemplatives in the middle of the world... that we live with the awareness that we are loved as beloved children of God. That you, Lord, in your incredible love, have come into our world, and you continue to come into our world... The Lord doesn’t stop coming to us, and therefore, ‘many great things depend—don’t forget it—on whether you and I live our lives as God wants’ (The Way, no. 755). Our lives can be beautiful and fruitful, and truly human and truly humanizing, to the extent that we embrace the Lord who comes towards us.” PAUSE AND REFLECT: • Annunciation: How can I lean more on the Blessed Mother, that she teaches me to pronounce a heartfelt 'yes' in response to God's will for me? • Visitation: What can I learn from St. Elizabeth and St. John the Baptist about how I could respond to Our Lord choosing to come so close to me? • Nativity: How could I respond with more humility, patience ,and gentleness to this God, who comes to me as such a little child? • Presentation: How shall I welcome Our Lord so that my life too is transformed, just like the lives of Anna and Simeon that had a 'before' and an 'after' to meeting Our Lord? • Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple: The learned scholars respond to Christ's presence by spending 'overtime' with Him—and what about my response and my time? [0:10] SPEAKER_00: My Lord and my God, I firmly believe that you are here, that you see me, that you hear me.
[0:17] SPEAKER_00: I adore you with profound reverence.
[0:20] SPEAKER_00: I ask you for pardon of my sins and grace to make this time of prayer fruitful.
[0:26] SPEAKER_00: My Mother Immaculate, Saint Joseph, my Father and Lord, my guardian angel, intercede for me.
[0:36] SPEAKER_00: In this period of prayer we uh want a dialogue with our Lord about a theme which is very pleasing to the Lord, undoubtedly, the Holy Rosary.
[0:50] SPEAKER_00: And from the start we can invoke the intercession of Saint Hosemaria, who was such um well such an enthusiast for the Holy Rosary, and who has done so much to help many people to pray the rosary well, also through his meditations contained in Holy Rosary, that beautiful series of meditations on the mysteries, which helps us to contemplate the events of our salvation with a childlike spirit, which is so powerful.
[1:28] SPEAKER_00: So we can thank the Lord, first of all, for the gift of the rosary.
[1:32] SPEAKER_00: It is a great gift, it is a wonderful prayer, it is, as it has been called by Saint John Paul II, a compendium of the gospel.
[1:44] SPEAKER_00: And it's true, when we contemplate you, Lord, through the eyes of your mother, we contemplate you through the most loving eyes, those of your mother.
[1:54] SPEAKER_00: We could say the rosary is like the memories of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the memories of Christ's mother.
[2:03] SPEAKER_00: We share in the life of Christ through the heart, through the eyes, through the memory of our lady.
[2:11] SPEAKER_00: We know how important in Christian prayer is the contemplation of Jesus Christ, you Lord, who are the fullness and sum total of revelation, as Vatican II tells us.
[2:27] SPEAKER_00: We can contemplate you in many ways, of course, looking at the crucifix, silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, doing the stations of the cross, contemplating the gospel.
[2:41] SPEAKER_00: And the rosary really is a contemplation of the Lord Jesus in a very powerful and intimate way in the company of his mother.
[2:52] SPEAKER_00: And maybe that's one of the reasons that we say the rosary is such a powerful prayer.
[3:00] SPEAKER_00: Lord help us to say the rosary well because it leads us to you.
[3:07] SPEAKER_00: Mary is always our shortcut to Jesus, and the rosary is, we might say, the runway for taking off to Jesus.
[3:18] SPEAKER_00: We know the rosary is a beautiful family prayer.
[3:21] SPEAKER_00: It brings the family of the church together.
[3:24] SPEAKER_00: It also brings families together, communities, groups of friends together.
[3:30] SPEAKER_00: The rosary is a great prayer for peace, ever relevant, also relevant today with so many wars happening.
[3:39] SPEAKER_00: How powerful the rosary is as an instrument of God's peace.
[3:46] SPEAKER_00: Saint Jose Maria emphasized that the rosary is a powerful weapon, a weapon for goodness, for love, for peace, for the spread of the gospel.
[4:00] SPEAKER_00: We might wonder what does it mean to say that the rosary is a powerful weapon?
[4:06] SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean, clearly, that the rosary is like a magic um formula.
[4:15] SPEAKER_00: It's something much deeper, much more organic.
[4:20] SPEAKER_00: It's a matter of the life of God which we contemplate in the rosary.
[4:26] SPEAKER_00: And specifically, when we look at the joyful mysteries of the rosary, maybe we can begin to understand something of the power of this prayer.
[4:37] SPEAKER_00: Because the joyful mysteries of the rosary show us how God intervenes in history for love of us, and how if we freely and willingly receive him, we and the world are transformed in an incredibly beautiful way.
[4:59] SPEAKER_00: God comes to us, and if we receive him, we renew the face of the earth, we could say, or more properly, more correctly, God renews the face of the earth through us.
[5:14] SPEAKER_00: Each one of the mysteries of the joyful mysteries of the Rosary speaks to us of God who comes towards us.
[5:24] SPEAKER_00: In the Annunciation, God who becomes flesh, incarnate, in the Immaculate Womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, God enters into history.
[5:34] SPEAKER_00: The Creator returns to his creation.
[5:38] SPEAKER_00: The Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.
[5:41] SPEAKER_00: God comes to us.
[5:43] SPEAKER_00: Maybe we can get used to this fact, but isn't it extraordinary that God, who is all powerful, entirely self-sufficient, all knowing, decides to go out of himself towards us.
[6:01] SPEAKER_00: There's no compulsion or necessity of any kind on his part.
[6:06] SPEAKER_00: This means that God's going out of himself towards us is a movement of pure unadulterated love.
[6:17] SPEAKER_00: It's a pure gift of self, which is in no way required or necessitated by anything or by anyone.
[6:24] SPEAKER_00: It's a free gift of himself.
[6:26] SPEAKER_00: This is how we know that God is love, that he doesn't, as it were, dwell in splendid isolation, but he comes out to us, he shows himself to us, he touches us, he blesses us, he heals us, he sanctifies us, he fills us with joy, he gifts us with his very self.
[6:48] SPEAKER_00: Surely this is one of the main themes we might say in the joyful mysteries that God comes to us, God comes towards us, laden with his grace.
[7:01] SPEAKER_00: We contemplate you, Lord Jesus, as you come to us through the free response of the Blessed Virgin Mary at her vocation.
[7:08] SPEAKER_00: Our Lady says yes, and you become flesh, you enter into our world.
[7:16] SPEAKER_00: And to all who received him, as Saint John says, to all who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.
[7:25] SPEAKER_00: When our lady conceives our Lord, she becomes his mother.
[7:31] SPEAKER_00: But in and through Christ we also become children of Mary, spiritually speaking, at the moment of the Annunciation, at the moment of the incarnation.
[7:42] SPEAKER_00: And if we freely receive our Lord, how beautifully and wonderfully we are transformed into God's children, and how our lives, to quote Saint Jose Maria, can leave a deep and fertile furrow in history through the working of grace through our weakness, in our weakness.
[8:09] SPEAKER_00: By raising us up to the dignity and the identity of being children of God, our Lord transforms history.
[8:18] SPEAKER_00: He renews the face of the earth, he beautifies creation, he restores to creation its former glory and more.
[8:29] SPEAKER_00: So, yes, Lord, we contemplate, and surely this is one of the reasons why these particular mysteries are so joyful.
[8:37] SPEAKER_00: You come towards us with a free movement of love in our direction.
[8:43] SPEAKER_00: You give yourself to us.
[8:45] SPEAKER_00: You come to us in our lady in the Annunciation.
[8:49] SPEAKER_00: You come to us through the hill country of Judea in the visitation.
[8:55] SPEAKER_00: You seek out Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist, who's in the womb, your cousin, and he leaps for joy, and Elizabeth is filled with wonder and joy herself, because God has come to her home.
[9:10] SPEAKER_00: God has come to them.
[9:13] SPEAKER_00: And in the third joyful mystery, when we kneel around the manger in Bethlehem, we are overcome with the mystery of the incarnation that you Lord have come to us in this most humble, most accessible, most patient, most gentle of ways, a little child.
[9:38] SPEAKER_00: Again to quote Saint Osamaria, he's become so small, you see, a child, so that you can approach him with confidence.
[9:50] SPEAKER_00: In the third joyful mystery, Lord Jesus, we take you into our arms, we welcome you, we adore you.
[9:57] SPEAKER_00: Unworthy and poor as we are in ourselves, we want to wholeheartedly receive the gift which is yourself.
[10:08] SPEAKER_00: This is the great joy of the church, the joy of salvation.
[10:11] SPEAKER_00: It's God who gives Himself, and for those who welcome the Lord, they are completely transformed.
[10:21] SPEAKER_00: And we too can be completely transformed in so far as we welcome the saving grace of Jesus Christ, of God made man.
[10:29] SPEAKER_00: It's such a mystery and such a beautiful mystery.
[10:32] SPEAKER_00: The the sacred and the Blessed Trinity could dwell, you know, in as it were in splendid isolation, in total self-sufficient, self-enclosed existence.
[10:48] SPEAKER_00: But no.
[10:50] SPEAKER_00: This original family, which is the Trinity, this original communion of life and love, which is the Trinity, doesn't remain enclosed, but rather goes out of itself through pure love and comes to us.
[11:04] SPEAKER_00: And and we contemplate that very especially in the in the joyful mysteries.
[11:11] SPEAKER_00: We think of Anna and Simeon, who encounter you, Lord, when you are presented in the temple by your faithful parents, Mary and Joseph, who present you in the temple in accordance with the law of Moses.
[11:24] SPEAKER_00: They fulfill the precepts, the traditions of their people, and in doing so, once again God comes and meets his people.
[11:33] SPEAKER_00: In this case, the Lord comes to meet Anna and Simeon, who are two elderly people, who have waited for years with great faithfulness for the coming of salvation for the Messiah.
[11:50] SPEAKER_00: So much so that Simeon, as it were, says his canticle or sings with his soul, his canticle is nunctomitus.
[11:59] SPEAKER_00: Now let your servant go in peace, Lord, for mine eyes have seen your glory.
[12:04] SPEAKER_00: His whole life has been geared towards this personal encounter with God made man, with the Savior.
[12:12] SPEAKER_00: And then, as he holds you, Lord, in his hands, he realizes that beyond all his wildest imaginings, God has come.
[12:21] SPEAKER_00: God is with us.
[12:23] SPEAKER_00: You are the Emmanuel.
[12:27] SPEAKER_00: Likewise we think of the Magi and the shepherds, the humble people who welcomed you in Bethlehem, who reverenced you, who protected you and cherished you.
[12:39] SPEAKER_00: And they also came to realize that God was with them.
[12:45] SPEAKER_00: We think of the Isaiah, the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah, written down several hundred years before the incarnation.
[12:53] SPEAKER_00: The Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and she shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God is with us.
[13:03] SPEAKER_00: This is the joy of the joyful mysteries.
[13:07] SPEAKER_00: God is with us.
[13:08] SPEAKER_00: God enters into our history.
[13:11] SPEAKER_00: God is not distant, he's not a clinic and a clinical onlooker unto human history.
[13:18] SPEAKER_00: God is a participant in human history.
[13:23] SPEAKER_00: And isn't this really the spirit, the charism of Opus Dei, which St.
[13:27] SPEAKER_00: Jose Maria so faithfully has transmitted to us within the bosom of the church?
[13:34] SPEAKER_00: That God waits for us in the ordinary, everyday things.
[13:39] SPEAKER_00: There's something holy, something divine, hidden in the most ordinary, everyday circumstances, and it's up to each one of us to discover it.
[13:47] SPEAKER_00: How beautiful this is.
[13:50] SPEAKER_00: Lord, I don't want to underestimate the beauty of my mission.
[13:53] SPEAKER_00: The mission we have all of us really to, again to quote St.
[13:57] SPEAKER_00: Jose Maria, to open up the divine paths of the earth.
[14:01] SPEAKER_00: Our world is not distant from God.
[14:04] SPEAKER_00: It's full of God.
[14:06] SPEAKER_00: It's full of God.
[14:08] SPEAKER_00: To quote the great English poet Jordan Manley Hopkins, the world is charged with the grandeur of God.
[14:17] SPEAKER_00: And that is because, Lord, you come to us, you come to us, and you bring us joy.
[14:23] SPEAKER_00: That's what we meditate on in the joyful mysteries, God who comes.
[14:27] SPEAKER_00: We could think also of the fifth joyful mystery, the the learned scholars of the law in the temple.
[14:34] SPEAKER_00: And God comes to them.
[14:37] SPEAKER_00: And whether they fully realize the magnitude of what is happening, they surely did appreciate this adolescent who was revealing to them so many things about the mysteries of faith.
[14:50] SPEAKER_00: That's why our Lord stayed with them, presumably for so long.
[14:55] SPEAKER_00: To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.
[15:04] SPEAKER_00: In the joyful mysteries, we contemplate, therefore, God who comes towards us.
[15:10] SPEAKER_00: But we also contemplate the response of human beings to God, and that for us is deeply inspiring, and it's also a source of tremendous joy, because we see that those who welcome our Lord are transformed, they're enriched, they are blessed.
[15:29] SPEAKER_00: Above all, we contemplate our lady.
[15:33] SPEAKER_00: She sets the tone for all the joyful mysteries with her wholehearted welcome of the Saviour.
[15:39] SPEAKER_00: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, let it be unto me according to your word.
[15:46] SPEAKER_00: How important it is, even for our own well-being, to fully welcome our Lord into our lives, this God who comes to us laden with love, with grace, with mercy.
[15:59] SPEAKER_00: We are utterly transformed when we receive Him.
[16:03] SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it may be good for us in our mental prayer to go back to that chapter of The Way by St.
[16:09] SPEAKER_00: Jose Maria, the chapter entitled The Will of God.
[16:16] SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking particularly of one point where the founder of the work writes, Many great things depend, don't forget it, on whether you and I live our lives as God wants.
[16:30] SPEAKER_00: That's a beautiful thing to reflect on, isn't it?
[16:33] SPEAKER_00: That whether or not we receive wholeheartedly the Saviour in our lives makes a big difference, not only to our own lives, but to the lives of everyone around us.
[16:43] SPEAKER_00: If our lady hadn't received our Lord, if Saint Elizabeth hadn't recognized the mother of the Lord in her midst, if Anna and Simeon had not discerned the presence of the Emmanuel of God with them, well their lives would have been very different.
[17:06] SPEAKER_00: And you and I, we too every day have the opportunity to welcome our Savior, to be filled with his grace, to live in the company of the Emmanuel.
[17:18] SPEAKER_00: I guess that's what Saint Josemuria meant when he said that we are called to be contemplatives in the middle of the world.
[17:26] SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
[17:28] SPEAKER_00: Surely it means that we live with the awareness that we are loved by God.
[17:34] SPEAKER_00: We live with the awareness that we are loved as beloved children of God, that you, Lord, in your incredible love, have come into our world and you continue to come into our world.
[17:46] SPEAKER_00: You come to us as our Creator, you come to us as we see in the joyful mysteries, you come to us in a special way as our Redeemer, as our Savior, as our Messiah.
[17:58] SPEAKER_00: You come to us, Jesus, every day in the Holy Eucharist, in a special way on our altars.
[18:05] SPEAKER_00: You come to us constantly through the life of grace in our souls, where you make your home among us.
[18:12] SPEAKER_00: The Lord doesn't stop coming to us, and therefore many great things depend, don't forget it, on whether you and I live our lives as God wants.
[18:23] SPEAKER_00: Our lives can be beautiful and fruitful and truly human and truly humanizing to the extent that we embrace the Lord who comes towards us.
[18:35] SPEAKER_00: So maybe we can turn to those who welcomed our Lord at the outset, thinking particularly of our lady and of Saint Joseph, but also we can think, of course, of Saint Elizabeth, Saint John the Baptist, Anna, Simeon, the Shepherds, the Magi, people who open their hearts and their lives to the Savior who comes.
[18:58] SPEAKER_00: I ask you, Lord, through the intercession of your mother, also by contemplating, praying the joyful mysteries of the rosary, that I may rediscover the power of these mysteries, the mysteries of our salvation, the mystery of God who comes towards us, who is close, who is love, who is one of us, like us in everything except sin.
[19:25] SPEAKER_00: And also personally may I rediscover the power and the mystery of saying yes to God in my daily life, and thereby somehow being a channel of God's redeeming love in the world.
[19:39] SPEAKER_00: I thank you, my God, for the good resolutions, affections, and inspirations you have communicated to me in this time of prayer.
[19:48] SPEAKER_00: I ask you for help to put them into effect.
[19:52] SPEAKER_00: My Mother Immaculate, Saint Joseph, my Father and Lord, my guardian angel, and also Saint Hosemuria, intercede for me, intercede for us.
[20:07] SPEAKER_00: Amen.
